We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. City Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Cardiff for the people of Cardiff. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore City Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. With our gorgeous suburban villages, we score high on shopping and lifestyle, and with our fantastic arcades and the supremely successful St David’s 2 development, residents and visitors are spoiled for choice. While we don’t want to preach and tell you where to shop, we do try to support local independent businesses for the very best reasons. Shopping locally creates jobs locally, and while you can often buy products at more affordable prices perhaps online, by investing your hard earned cash locally, you are helping to retain your local community’s distinctiveness. Another thing that Cardiff can be proud of is its nightlife and with

superb venues like our cover star, Ten Mill Lane, you’re guaranteed to have a good time. Cardiff might be a young capital but we’re growing up fast and we boast some of the best restaurants, clubs and bars in the region. In the pages of this winter issue of City Life, you’ll discover many local businesses who deserve and value your custom. Remember, small business owners are just like you. Just people trying to make a living. We hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year and we’ll see you in the spring. Lewis Evans Client Relationship Director 07787 907926 lewis@goodlifepublishing.co.uk

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! City Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Cardiff and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper City Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

We’ve heard you can enjoy five star food dishes from around the world while receiving five star hair services from a five star hairdressing team. City Life finds out more from salon owner Phillip Ubuntu Cogin.

LIFESTYLE SALON What’s the story behind the name of your salon? Gõndi originates from Mahatma Gandhi and Gondwana, an African village which is renowned as being a place of safety. When I was travelling I met Ketut Liyer in Bali; he’s the traditional healer who was featured in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book and film ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and he told me I was going to set up a salon. When I returned from my travels I came home to Rhiwbina to find the previous hair salon in Heol Llanishen Fach had closed - this was so obviously the right opportunity at the right time. What’s the ethos behind Gõndi Lifestyle Salon? In a word, sustainability. Gõndi is a naturally derived salon; we use one of the world leaders in sustainable hair and beauty products, Davines, and by

doing so we’re able to offer a unique experience to our customers whilst doing our bit to save the planet. The fabulous Davines products that we use in the salon are also available to purchase here. Also the interior of our salon is ecofriendly; the walls are made up of cotton wool imported from Lanzarote, we use energy saving lightbulbs and have a focus on recycling. We can see a food menu here too - what’s that about? We’ve just launched our food menu. We’ve collaborated with our neighbouring restaurant, Caffe Fach, to offer Thai noodles, beetroot falafels, tapas and desserts, as well as complementary wine and other drinks such as Christmas lattes etc. All the ingredients for these are sourced 6

ethically and locally from farms and suppliers around North Cardiff. I thought it would be a nice touch to offer our guests food and drinks while their colour is developing or simply having a blow dry and, so far, it’s going down a storm. Do you have any other plans on the horizon? I do intend to expand the salon in the near future. Also we’re thrilled to have been nominated for a variety of awards recently. We intend to keep fresh, and keep ahead of Welsh hairdressing. Definitely one to watch; as we’ve heard this edgy lifestyle salon is already up for a number of prestigious awards including the Cardiff Lifestyle Awards, the Welsh National Hair Federation Awards and the I Sustain Beauty Awards.

Nibble Nature’s snacks are inspired by nature, carefully sourced, and nutritionist approved. Their smart snacking service offers healthy, natural and mouth-watering nibbles. City Life chats with Eunice Chipachini about taking the guesswork out of snacking healthily…

NIBBLE NATURE

What led you to setting up Nibble Nature? I’ve always had a strong, personal interest in healthy eating, fitness and buying locally sourced produce. Also, during my time working, I observed that people at work tend to opt for easier, faster snacking options (generally unhealthy snacks) due to their busy schedules which often diminish the amount of time they have to prepare healthy snacks. With this in mind, I decided to create a convenient, innovative way to deliver healthy curated snacks directly to the desk of busy working professionals who value high quality snacks and have an active, healthy lifestyle. Nibble Nature’s implementation was finalised in July 2016 and

has received encouraging public response. Many customers are drawn to the novelty aspect and the idea of snacking smarter. We will be delivering over 1,000 free snack packets in the next few weeks to customers who have signed up for our service. Can you tell us a bit more about Nibble Nature? Nibble Nature is a healthy snack subscription box service that delivers healthy and nutrient-rich snacks directly to their desk for free. Customers can choose weekly, fortnightly or monthly deliveries. We deliver five snacks, one for each day of the working week - delivered on a Monday. These snacks come in portable, convenient eco-friendly 10

packs and portion controlled amounts; our customers can select from five snack boxes that we offer: Go Nuts, Office Nibble Box, Gym Box, Gluten-Free Box, Vegan Box.

We love the idea of snacking smarter – how does that work? At Nibble Nature we believe that it’s not about just snacking but how and what our snackers and nibblers snack. People snack for different reasons when they are hungry, have a craving, or as part of a healthy diet or for a treat, fitness or to lose weight. Healthy snacks for work have to be smart and strategic; at Nibble Nature we want our snackers to have a snack box in both their desk and gym bag every week. We deliver our snacks (five packs in a box) to our snackers on a

Monday which serves them through to Friday. We believe this will give some sense of ease knowing that they have their snacks readily available for the week. One useful way we recommend our nibblers to snack smarter is by snacking half a pack now and half later in the day. For example, they can enjoy half of the snacks at their lunchtime and the other half before close. When curating our snacks we choose snacks that contain both, proteins, natural fats and carbohydrates and these are ‘a winning snack combination’. These macronutrients work together to consistently stimulate our metabolism and energy, maintaining blood sugar levels and keeping our stomachs full until the next meal. We also

encourage our nibblers to include a snack for a treat. Where do you source your produce? We source our produce locally and globally, and we are focused on partnering with independent, artisanal snack producers. What is the ethos behind Nibble nature? By providing a subscription service, Nibble Nature serves the needs of work professionals and gives them the opportunity to do good - with every subscription box purchased we contribute a portion of our customers’ purchases for good causes in the community through food banks and Just Giving. 11

As one of Cardiff’s best wedding, portrait, and commercial photography studios - with a membership to the Guild of National Photographers and an award to back this claim up - Peter Morgan has certainly found his calling, but his past is just as exciting as the images he takes on a daily basis.

MORGAN JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY

First appearing on the British classic ‘It’s A Knockout” at twelve years old Peter spent a lot of his time growing up in front of the camera. When he wasn’t partaking in his normal, grown up IT job, he shared his time between television and music ventures. Making appearances on Doctor Who, Eastenders, Midsummer Murders, Crimewatch, The Bill, Pobol Y Cym, and many more. As well as making it to the last round of contestants in the reality show ‘Popstars’ after which his own band reached number 68 in the Welsh charts whilst touring with a village people tribute band. Having sampled what various industries had to offer Peter then picked up a camera and has not looked back in the

twelve years since doing so. His skills behind the camera were quickly noticed as he was asked to take shots of the British Olympic Swimming Team, as well as various events for both the FA and the WRU. However it was Weddings that caught Peter’s eye, and not only because of the easy access to cake. Wedding photography quickly became his passion. “Being able to be an integral part of someones most special day is simply amazing, plus being trusted to create something that they will look at and cherish forever is a real source of pride for me.” With a lot more amazing things lined up in the near future you should definitely watch this space to see what else Peter does next. 16

Sorrento born Massimo Fraioli has worked in the food and hospitality industry for his whole career – it all began in the family delicatessen on Corso Italia. He opened I Giardini di Sorrento (The Garden of Sorrento) earlier this year with his friend Gaetano Monteriso, a talented and passionate Chef from Naples.

I GIARDINI DI SORRENTO

City Life chats with Massimo, as Gaetano travels around the world as executive chef on the Viking Cruises, about their traditional Italian restaurant which is inspired by the fresh and authentic flavours of the Sorrento Peninsula.

speciality is most definitely his home-made pasta, home-made bread and home-made cakes and desserts. We knew by focusing on a truly authentic Italian menu we’d be on to a winner - our food is made with copious Italian passion.

Congratulations Massimo, as we speak your restaurant is placed second out of 887 restaurants in Cardiff on Trip Advisor. Ciao, we’re delighted that our dream has taken off so quickly. Many customers are returning again and again, and we welcome new friends to our ‘Piazza Tasso’ or our ‘Giardini’ every day. We’ve even teamed up with Deliveroo to provide a service delivering our food directly to our customers’ homes.

Gianni worked under chef Michele Insigne in 'O Sole Mio' and in the Michelin Star 'Don Alfonso' both located in Sant'Agata Sui Due Golfi Gianni and his kitchen team work hard to prepare hand-made pasta,

Can you tell us about the food you serve and your Head Chef? Our award-winning Head Chef is my brother-in-law Gianni Pane. His 22

including his speciality, the Scialatielli, which is a tradition of the Amalfi coast; and his ravioli parcels which are finished by hand - our favourite ones are filled with a selection of fish. As well as our a la carte menu we have daily specialities including lobster served with black ink pasta, huge T-bone steaks, and sea bass - and not forgetting our selection of fresh homemade desserts including tiramisu, rum baba and Delizie al limone - a must for anyone that has visited Sorrento. Also, we offer a full wine list with a selection of wines not usually seen in Cardiff; with the focus mainly on Italian wines including a red and white wine made from the very grapes that were grown on the sides of Vesuvius (Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio), a delicious slightly sparkling red wine that can be recognised by many that have visited Sorrento (Gragnano), and fine Prosecco and Champagnes.

What are you offering your diners during the festive season? Our immediate focus is to provide our customers with a Christmas offering that is a little bit different (our festive menus can be seen at www.i-giardini. com). We’ll be serving our delicious five course, New Year’s Eve menu which includes coffee and imported Italian liquor for only £49.95. This is proving very popular with many tables already booked by our regular customers. And after repeated requests, we are now selling gift cards as an ideal present offering.

our wonderful dishes in their own homes, and maybe enjoy a glass of fine wine too.

What plans do you have for the future? Our focus for the next year is to continue to grow the restaurant by offering our customers great authentic Italian cuisine. We’re developing lessons for the public to come into our kitchens and learn how to make some of our own traditional, yet simple, Italian offerings, so that they can cook

We would like to thank our customers and, of course, all our hardworking staff; from Gianni, Filippo, Silvio, Davide and Patrizia in the kitchen, to Tania, Giusy, and Vittorio on the restaurant floor and, not forgetting our very creative design engineer, Carlo Imperato, without whom our dream would simply not work. Grazie mille per sempre Massimo e Gaetano.

We’re also planning to expand in Spring 2017 by introducing I Giardini di Sorrento Event Catering, where customers can pick and choose individual items to compile their own personal food offering for external events, such as parties, christenings, office meetings, weddings etc. with the emphasis on authentic and extremely tasty food - event catering made simply delicious.

Translated as ‘foot of the mountain' (Gwaelod-y-Garth), the Gwaelod Inn is well positioned on the Taff-Ely Ridgeway Path for ramblers, cyclists (and hang-gliders) as well as its appreciative locals.

Barbara and Richie Angell took over the popular pub over twelve years ago and it’s been a much loved family run, independent business ever since. Although they’re thrilled to have won numerous awards (they were CAMRA winners in 2011 and 2013 and runners up in 2016 - as well as being selected as having the second best pub views in the country by the Guardian Magazine), Barbara tells us it’s not all about the accolades but more about their regulars; be they drinkers, foodies, cyclists, walkers, dog walkers, sports people, and some seriously anti-sports people apparently. This is definitely a pub where the focus is on getting together and socialising.

You may be familiar with the Garth Mountain if you’ve seen the film ‘The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain’ starring Hugh Grant - this was based on the Garth. The pub boasts spectacular views; it’s hard to believe we’re a mere eleven minute train ride from the centre of Cardiff. They have a homely downstairs bar, with a pool table, which is family and dog friendly and which has a great reputation locally for serving home cooked pub food. The upstairs restaurant seats sixty and can also seat twenty for private dining. The Gwaelod’s team of chefs cook with top quality, fresh produce which is delivered daily from local suppliers. 24

They’re open for lunches, dinners and, of course, their ever popular Sunday roasts. The Gwaelod Inn have a 5 star food hygiene rating and 4 stars from Visit Wales for their B&B accommodation which is perfect for the steady stream of business professionals and people staying for holidays, walkers, cyclists and, of course, the rugby. And, as if that’s not enough, they also have an onsite brewery called the Violet Cottage Brewery - also known as ‘The Brew With A View’, where they brew a selection of beers which are served exclusively in their own bar and, as you’d expect from an establishment at the top of their game, the home brews are becoming increasingly popular.

Locals tell us the waft of the beer being brewed on a Sunday morning is something to behold. We’re making a mental note to return on a Sunday! Yes, we highly recommend a trip to north Cardiff for this outstanding indie pub where they hold weekly pub quizzes and occasional live music as well as an annual Bake Off and Cider and Sausage Festival. The last word must go to Barbara and Richie who would like to wish all their staff and regulars a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without our amazing team of friendly and professional staff, many of whom have been with us from day one, and of course our much loved regulars. Thank you all.”

WELCOME TO YUME

In 2006 the Yume brand was born. After working through their hairdressing apprenticeships together, two life-long friends Giovanna McCarthy and Jacqui Caley opened the doors to Yume, and have not stopped since! The Yume teams and guests are growing rapidly with the strong directorship of Giovanna, Jacqui and Tristan. A year on and they had the pleasure of welcoming on board one of the finest Colour experts in the country, Susannah Underwood. Susannah can you tell us about your job? What can we look forward to in 2017? After an inspirational day at a recent Master Colour Congress I’m looking forward to Spring/Summer trends being intelligent colour placements, and creative optical illusions in hair, shape and colour. Injections of colour, 28

to enhance multi texture to the hair allowing it to be bespoke for each individual person and their lifestyle, hair texture, face shape, hair shape. We will see colour placement and hair shape working in synergy. Soft textures, Cornfield blondes, Enriched brunettes. What makes Yume Salons better than the rest? A conversation guide, a complete hair and beauty journey. Deciding on haircare at home can be confusing - so book your consultation with us and we’ll have a friendly ‘conversation’ where we listen to you and then guide you with a hair and beauty plan that suits your individual skin-tone, faceshape, lifestyle and how you care for your hair to ensure you look and feel amazing at home as well as here in our salon. PERSONAL TRAINING

With a background that has seen him play rugby in New Zealand, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, Marvyn Bailey wanted to fill the free time he had between each of his rugby training sessions. After having qualified as a personal trainer and nutritionist Marvyn quickly found enjoyment through helping others to achieve their goals and watching as their characters and confidence grew. After retiring from rugby he took the opportunity to go full time with his Personal Training and branched out into not one but two training facilities, each packed with world class training equipment - including an extensive loose weights section, plus Olympic weights and lifting platforms - as well as additional studios that hosts a range of exciting daily classes. Alongside his powerhouse of experts that make up his team, Marvyn represents the best in the personal training industry. Happy to let their results speak for themselves, the trainers do not use the

latest fads and trends - most of which cause more harm than good - instead focusing on tried and tested methods founded on the latest industry thinking. By working alongside each person the trainers can find the fitness solution that is perfect for them, without judgement or unneeded critique. Fundamental philosophies are the base for their fitness programmes that helps provide the needed stimulus for the clients to achieve their desired results. Their ability to use the science behind the training in a fun and dynamic format means that all sessions are both enjoyable and effective, two key results of any great workout. 31

At Cardiff’s Ski and Snowboarding Centre in Fairwater, skiing and snowboarding are amazing hobbies that can be enjoyed all year round - and you don’t even need snow! City Life chat with manager Richard Hughes to find out what’s going on at the home of Snowsport Wales.

WINTER WONDER

Richard what’s the Ski Centre offering over the next few months? We have our new freestyle development evening for beginners who want to learn freestyle skiing or snowboarding - this takes place at 4pm - 6pm every Sunday. In this two hour session we have a different feature each week with qualified instructors on hand to teach our budding skiers. We also have a big freestyle evening every Sunday for more advance skiers and snowboarders which we get all the freestyle features out. Can you tell us some more about freestyle skiing? We’re already the leading freestyle ski slope in Wales; our aim is to become a more prominent slope in the UK through freestyle. Our freestyle features are all made by a German company called Schneestern, who are responsible for the features found in many of

the biggest and more famous parks across the world. They are all full-sized features, fully adapted to dry slopes in order for us to offer the best quality and safest features possible.

We will be the only dry slope in the UK to feature a professional and purposebuilt stair section, for those looking to develop urban riding (and because they look super cool). Our features also include an 8m butter box, a 6m rainbow box, a 8m roller-coaster box and a 8m industrial pipe for the more advanced (like the ones seen at the top section of the slopestyle course in the Olympics), as well as a few others that we can chop and change around to offer a huge range of options and courses. We also have a viewing platform to make spectating just as much fun as taking part and, believe me, watching 32

freestyle skiing and snowboarding really keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Do you have any other activities here? In addition to skiing? Other than skiing and snowboarding, we offer super-tubing. This is where you head to the top of the slope with a big rubber ring (like the ones you get at a water park, but with a plastic bottom) and then slide down - forwards, backwards, sideways, spinning around, in a pair, as a train, over a jump etc. Tubing is much more popular in the summer, when we run drop-in sessions every day, as well as hold private birthday parties, staff events or charity activity sessions. We’re hooked by the sound of it all. What advice would you give our

readers who aren’t sure whether to start with skiing or snowboarding? It really depends on you as a person. Both sports are super accessible to anyone and everyone – however, I’d recommend families with young children try skiing first. Legend goes that it’s easier to learn how to ski: this is probably because you’re going forwards rather than sideways and everyone knows how to stand up on two separate feet, so it’s less foreign than snowboarding. You can also look at it in terms of how you learn; when you learn to ski, you learn the easy way first and the hard way afterwards - so it takes a lot longer to get really good. When you learn to snowboard, there’s only really one way - the hard way. But once you’ve got it, the whole mountain becomes your playground. Lastly, you have to think what you want out of it. The only thing skiing and snowboarding have in common is that they go downhill over frozen water. The way you do it, the way you approach the mountain and experience the mountain is completely different. Again, if I were to generalise (and this is in no way set in stone at all as snow sports are so diverse and creative), skiing benefits speed, technique and precision, while snowboarding is all about playing, exploration and cruising around with your buddies.

Recently the country has been in a Healthy Living Renaissance as more people are becoming motivated to ditch their bad habits and make improvements to their lifestyle. GRIP, a personal training studio, aims to improve your everyday living and health, rather than focusing on generic fitness and sometimes harmful diet fads.

GRIPPING

For a long time the media has been full of fitness stories that “reveal” the best way to achieve your fitness goals - be it weight loss, muscle gain, or simply to become healthier - this often leads to people attempting exercises or meal plans that might not be the best for their individual requirements and therefore does not conclude with the desired results. Run by Josh and Leah, GRIP understand the needs of the individual and so helps you to achieve almost any goal to ultimately improve your life, both physically and mentally. With individually created training plans GRIP aims to help everyone improve fitness, cardiovascular capacity, balance, flexibility, mobility, and strength. All of which are key skills that will transfer to everyday life. GRIP is focused on you, offering a range of services that can be taken advantage of, even if you have a busy schedule and cannot always make it to the studio.

“GRIP aims to help everyone improve their fitness.”

To start they offer a range of sessions including single person, pairs, and larger groups (upon request) - that all include tailored workout plans, nutritional advice, and seven day a week contact for help and advice. Perfect for those who may feel uncomfortable in a large gym environment. They run morning, evening and weekend group training classes of up to ten people with two instructors present. This is unlike most other gyms or health centres, meaning that GRIPs classes provide greater supervision and guidance to ensure you are on the correct path to your goal. With five alternate classes to choose from focusing on everything from 30 minute insanity training to learning how to become a fitness ninja. In January they are offering a 12 week programme that includes two group classes and one personal training session each week, along with a full nutrition plan for only £300, plus they have also created GRIP Online. Developed for those with a busy lifestyle or for people who live too far away from the facility, GRIP Online is where you can 34

receive individually designed fitness programmes that factors in your goals, time allotted for training, equipment (if any), and workout space. Ideal for those who want to workout at home, or in a local park. Finally on-site sports massage is also available in the facility. With a dedicate therapist skilled in sports massage, acupuncture, Myofascial release, muscle energy techniques, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), stretching, and postural analysis. All of which are beneficial to everyone, not just those who participate in sports or activities.

Established in 1972 and enjoying the reputation as one of Cardiff ’s leading shoe repairers, the snappily named Canton Cobbler does exactly what it says on the tin – and then some. Father and son team Don and Tim Fowler are renowned for their outstanding shoe repairs, reliable key cutting service and high quality leather goods. City Life chats with Manager Tim Fowler at their recently refurbished store…

CANTON COBBLER

Can you tell us about your renovation? The refurbishment is just the start; we’re building our Canton Cobbler brand. It’s time that the outside of the store reflects the quality of the work that we do inside the store. We have the quality products and the quality workmanship and now we have the brand that reinforces that. What makes Canton Cobbler stand out above the rest? We don’t just sell shoes, we don’t just repair shoes - we know shoes. We can repair almost any type of shoe but specialise in handmade footwear which, coupled with our enviable selection of Barker handmade shoes, allows us to offer the very best repair and retail service. We have an in depth fitting criteria which means no one leaves with a pair of shoes that do not fit correctly. We are not reliant on selling these

beautiful handmade shoes to earn a living, our expertise in our trade allows that, but they do enhance the Canton Cobbler repair and retail experience. What led to your decision to sell handmade shoes? We decided to sell shoes, particularly handmade Goodyear welted shoes because of their ability to be repaired; more people wearing handmade shoes means more repair work for us. Barker shoes have a massive range of shoes consisting of the classics and the creatives and they are still handmade in Northampton. We have taken the decision to make a lot more room for our growing Barker selection. Do you sell any other products besides shoes? We’ve always concentrated on retailing quality leather goods and we’ve just added the Visconti range of leather 36

goods to our store. Quality leather purses, wallets, watch straps, belts, messenger bags, satchels and handbags as well as Barker shoes can all be found at our store. Do you have any plans for the future? Absolutely, we’re planning on expanding and we’re constantly looking at other brands of leather goods to widen our ranges. Also our website is going to be updated so you will be able to send us your footwear for repairs using the choices available as well as being able to select and purchase your Barker shoes online. If you’re looking to give your much loved boots or shoes an overhaul for the winter, or investing in a pair of handmade shoes (self-gifting is a good thing), then we suggest a trip to Canton Cobblers. Oh and remember to tell them City Life sent you!

FFANDANGO’S

Bara Menyn A little over six months ago we looked up to the skies and saw the signage for Ffandango’s. With a name based on Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody this fine Welsh produce and organic fruit and veg store had a lot to live up to, what they have achieved has sent shivers down our collective spines. After a fortuitous meeting at a wedding between Ffandango’s Dylan and Bara Menyn’s Catrin, the pair formed an instant connection and quickly joined forces. Dylan was looking for a passionate food lover to go into Ffandango’s kitchen and Catrin was keen to move out of her city centre premises. Less than a month later and the two companies had combined to the brilliant store we see today. By utilising the high quality, organic produce that has been supplied to Ffandango’s by a selection of expert Welsh Farmers, Bara Menyn have created a traditional Welsh sustainable menu that perfectly showcases the produce that is available in the shop. In addition to the fully stocked deli counter, this delicious partnership also provides stunning meals - including full breakfasts, homemade cawl with rarebit and glamorgan sausages, and Welsh dishes inspired by Catrin’s Mamgu - cake, bara brith, their very own blend of Welsh breakfast tea known as ‘Hiraeth’, and their much loved Coal Town Coffee that is hand roasted in Ammanford and proving extremely popular with the customers (including us!).

All food is available to eat in or to take away. They even offer a selection of hampers, ideal as a gift this Christmas, with orders being taking now. There really is a kinda magic in this place, so although walk-ins are welcome we advise booking well in advance! 26 High Street, Llandaff CF5 2DZ www.ffandangos.com Facebook.com/ffandangos Facebook.com/baramenyn Twitter @6aramenyn Instagram baramenyn.cymru 38

In the last couple of months James and Jenkins improved their amazing list of services by becoming the first Subaru Dealer to be found within Cardiff for more than five years. Yet, even with this new responsibility, they have not lost focus and still manage to be one of the best places to visit when looking to buy a used car.

JAMES & JENKINS

It has been more than thirty five years since James and Jenkins first opened. Along the way they have grown to encompass a range of services that easily makes them one of the best car showrooms in Wales. New and used cars, servicing and MOT’s, they do it all and, most impressively, all under one roof. Primarily dealing with Vauxhalls and now Subaru – but with a range of others, including Renault, Ford and Fiat to mention a few - James and Jenkins ensure every car bought through them has been completely checked and are ready for you to drive away instantly after purchase. Being FCA authorised they have a long list of finance options, and have affiliations with leading financiers

such as Black Horse and Motonovo. The staff offer their complete personal attention to make sure you drive away happy with the best possible deal. If that was not enough, you can also find Charter Vehicle Hire on-site. As one of the oldest established vehicle hire companies in South Wales, Charter offer competitive renting of anything from a small town car to a full tail-lift Transit Luton van.

“We have always been on the top of the pile when it comes to providing our customers with incredible service and even better cars.” 40

EBONY HAIR & BEAUTY

Whilst housed in its old premises, Ebony Hair and Beauty felt they were unable to provide a full range of treatments for their clients. That all changed when Eddie and the team moved to a greatly improved location on Newport Road. The new premises, and the space it provides, ensures Eddie and her team can realise their potential. In addition to offering their regular list of expert beauty treatments such as nails (gels and shellac), spray tans, manicures, pedicures, waxing, and make up, this talented team also provides a full range of hairdressing including cutting, re-styling, ‘Great Lengths’ hair extensions, and colouring with

specific expertise in all aspects of Afro Caribbean hair. Spread across two floors, one for each speciality, Eddie is still looking to improve her workspace with a part of the salon soon being turned into a traditional barbers room, ready to expand their already vast range of services even more. The available space has also enabled Eddie to achieve one of her life long dreams, of passing on her skills to a whole new generation. With a teaching qualification quickly on its way, Eddie will soon be able to offer apprenticeships to those looking to get into the hair and beauty industry. 42

Our move went extremely smoothly thank you - with massive support from my boyfriend, friends and family we achieved the transition in under a week. During our time in the city centre our customer base grew rapidly which was the reason for the move to our bigger premises. We’ve also updated our website which now has online booking facilities available. And what do you love most about your new premises? We have free parking for an hour just opposite our salon plus it’s within easy walking distance from town and close to the beautiful Cardiff Bay barrage - I’m delighted we’re here. What inspired the look? I designed our whole interior; we have an interesting combination of shabby chic and Louis XXVI, we’ve had great comments from our clients about our new look. What are your most popular treatments? Our most popular treatments are, of course, nails; everything from gel manicures to long acrylic extensions and UV gel overlays. With nails, the sky is the limit. Also popular are our more advanced beauty treatments: Semi-permanent make-up and micro blading. With my artistic background (I have a University degree in Fine Art) you can be sure your

tattooed eyebrows will look realistic. Electrolysis - we have a new and very powerful Apilus machine which gives 100% permanent hair removal for just £1 per 1 minute of treatment. Body massage with incorporation of audio sonic, this gives amazing results for problematic areas and prices start from as little as £18. What treatments are proving to be popular during the festive season? That has to be our festive season combo: £40 for shellac mani and pedi plus a spray tan - perfect for party goers. There’s also a lot of interest in our hair extensions at the moment; we offer La Weave extensions and we use BeautyWorks quality hair. The additional two rows of hair these provide allow our clients to achieve the look they want for the biggest party season of the year. Do you have a signature treatment? Yes, our Russian Volume Eyelash Extension - in just three hours you can have very thick, very full lashes for a fabulous dramatic look. And do you sell gift vouchers because we’re thinking these would make great stocking fillers? Yes we sell our gift vouchers at a 20% discount so they’re great value. They’re redeemable up to three months from purchase.

Last but not least, do you have any plans for the future Anja? Ha, don’t tell them your dream show them. 45

It’s been two years since Precision opened their doors and business is going from strength to strength. In a previous addition of City Life magazine we spoke with Artistic Director and Owner, Lawrence Taylor, who mentioned their specialist hair extension system which is suitable for both men and women, and those who suffer from medical hair loss. We were intrigued so we just had to find out more…

IT’S A LL IN THE PRECISION So Lawrence, tell us what you mean by hair extension system? Here at Precision we are experts in the art of application of hair extensions and more importantly the incredible system ‘Hair in Recovery’. Our method is the only hair extension system to be endorsed by leading trichologist Iain Sallis. Whether you have thinning hair; you’re growing out a haircut that you’re unhappy with; or an incredible transformation after chemotherapy, we will be able to do something for you. Hair extensions can add instant length, colour, texture and volume but most importantly they create a look completely personalised to you. Where does the hair come from? We’re incredibly proud to have a close working partnership with Racoon

International, the professionals’ choice for premium quality hair extensions. What I love about Racoon is their extensive range of hair colours which allows me as an artist to truly utilise the creative palette to create individual bespoke looks every time.

Is glue used to apply the extensions? Absolutely not! If you choose our prebonded or hot bonded system, gentle translucent bonds are made from a non-allergy formula which, when removed, leaves no trace or residue. If you’re looking for something a little more temporary, our virtually invisible, micro weft system is also incredible. All three systems are scientifically proven not to damage the hair. Are the hair extensions just to add length? 46

You can most definitely achieve glamourous length and incredible volume when you have extensions; but that is not all they offer! Here at Precision we are proud to look after so many ‘Hair in Recovery’ clients.

Hair in Recovery? Tell us more… We all know someone who has suffered from severe hair loss, alopecia or has undergone chemotherapy. Racoon International has come up with the most wonderful system - The Hair in Recovery programme. This means that full head application of hair extensions can be applied in specialist placements to very short hair to allow clients to rebuild their self-esteem and confidence. Not everybody is qualified in this system, it takes extensive training and education in the art

TESTIMONIALS

Nicola; Hair in Recovery client After the initial shock of a cancer diagnosis I was upset about the loss of my hair. It was devastating to have that part of me snatched away and to lose part of my identity. I researched Racoon online and found Precision offered this service for patients. After a consultation I decided to go ahead, it offers a great range of colours and the process was simple thanks to Lawrence being a true master of his trade. I've enjoyed playing with new styles I wouldn't have tried before and the extensions are very easy to maintain. The Racoon hair in recovery programme was the first step towards becoming myself again and taking back control.

Ayla; Hot Bond System client

of hair extension application - it’s all in the precision! We’re experts in trichology issues related to hair extensions and how hair loss can affect you; we understand that hair is delicate and this is why we carry out a thorough consultation. All clients that use the hair in recovery programme will receive subsidy off hair, bonding and aftercare products for the first twelve months!

I’m totally in love with my Racoon extensions. I've had different brands of extensions in the past but Racoon have been the best by far.

“They blend really well with my own super short hair; I get hardly any hair loss when brushing/washing. I love having long hair again!”

How discreet are the extensions? All of our extension systems are virtually invisible! You’re unable to tell the difference between what is your hair and hair extensions when using our expert techniques. All application methods are discreetly hidden and flexible, this means you’re able to wear your hair up or down and still be comfortable.

Working in the accountancy field for almost thirty years, and specialising in dentists for almost twenty years, Freemans have a wealth of knowledge relating to tax, accounting and business management and have developed symbiotic partnerships with various businesses in the legal and financial world - an invaluable resource.

FREEMANS ACCOUNTANCY

Freemans Accountancy achieved 64% growth between 2009 and 2011, gaining your business a coveted place in the 2012 Fast Growth 50 Awards. How have you built on this? The growth has given us the confidence to be selective in who we take on as clients; we’re working with people we have a good relationship with, and want to work with.

a lot easier to work with clients who require regular management reports as the transactions are automatically downloaded into the software every few days giving us real time/up to date information. Also, if the clients manage their own book-keeping we can access the software at any time to monitor the business. If clients have been using a different accounts package in the past this data can be converted into QuickBooks so there is a smooth transition and historical data doesn’t have to be re-entered. We also use other software packages such as Sage and Xero.

for meetings - or a client may want some figures urgently, so I will work late nights or weekends. I’m happy to do this to help the client, so tend to make the most of my spare time when I have it. I enjoy travelling around Europe watching different forms of motorsport such as Formula 1 or MotoGP, or just lazing around in the sun at Pine Cliffs resort in the Algarve. My hobby used to be playing football, but numerous knee operations put an end to that, so the last few years I have taken up motorsport and raced in the mini challenge. I have had a number of podiums in that series, and also when driving the mini in other mixed races. If I can get some sponsorship together I would love to return to the mini challenge next season in the new F56 race car.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY… “As a company we have used Freemans Accountancy for many years now. Craig and his staff are a team we can trust to provide us the very best in financial services and we are very happy to be associated with them.”

Ian Peebles P & P Timber Ltd

“We met Craig back in 2006 after a recommendation from a dental colleague. Over the last 10 years he has helped us with everything financially orientated from business accounts to financial forecasts for a medical practice and contacts for some great mortgage advice. Freeman & Co offer an unrivalled accountancy service that I would not hesitate to recommend.”

Sid Gautam Dermaskin

“We have been a client of Craig's since we incorporated in 2004. Having recently moved across to Quick Books to save time processing the large number of membership transactions each month. Cutting down the time spent on financials was a business need that we had to find a solution for; the new service agreement we have developed with Freeman's suits both parties. It is important that the service we receive reflects the needs of the business; to me that is how a professional service should be run.”

Everyone loves to celebrate a special event, but planning these occasions is another matter altogether. City Life chats with uber organised Carolyn Oliver and Jennifer Ellis of Your Day, Your Way as they celebrate their second anniversary…

YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY

Congratulations on two successful years of business; what’s the story behind Your Day, Your Way? Thank you. Carolyn took early retirement and my (Jen’s) children were now teenagers and we were both looking for a change of direction. We got chatting over a friend’s wedding breakfast; met for coffee a week later and thought let’s go for it! Your Day, Your Way grew out of that chance meeting and has been going strong ever since. Initially we worked on weddings and parties but our business has grown so much that we are now contracted by hotels in Cardiff to dress events for charity dinners and corporate events. We now work on a full range of events and no two weeks are the same. What is the ethos behind your business? Our ethos is perfectly summarised by our name. We focus on the requirements of our clients and offer a full advisory service to help deliver the perfect day

or event, but ultimately everything we do ensures our clients have the perfect event; Your Day, Your Way! What sets you apart from your competitors? We tailor our service to meet the needs of our individual clients. No job is too big or too small. We pride ourselves on transforming any room, whether it’s a school hall or a hotel conference room, into a magical setting giving your event the “wow” factor. The feedback from our clients has been fantastic and we always receive comments that the room is unrecognizable after we have dressed it. What size events do you cater for? We pride ourselves on our flexibility; we cater for all sizes of events. The smallest event we have dressed was a piano recital which was attended by thirty people; the largest was the City Hall where we dressed an event for 450 people. We’ve also dressed televised 50

events which have led to excellent feedback. And we were delighted to be asked to dress the Hoteliers Ball which will be attended by staff from all the major hotels in Cardiff. What’s the most unusual event you’ve arranged? It’s not the event itself that is unusual but the themes that our clients ask for, from a Dr Who themed wedding, a circus themed graduation ball for School of Dentistry UHW, to a charity dinner to raise funds for Sri Lanka with the country being the theme. What advice would you give to any of our readers planning an event? Don’t panic! Have a plan for the basic details such as venue, guest numbers and most importantly budget! Also don’t be afraid to contact a company like ours, we have had clients who’ve bought centrepieces/sashes etc. direct from the internet thinking it would be more cost effective and they could do the event

TESTIMONIAL

What you say… “These people are just amazing! I met them extremely close to the day of our event but they still managed to go above and beyond for us….I would 100% recommend them to anyone.” “I don't know what I would have done without them!”

themselves. In reality, some of the items purchased have not been good quality and clients can forget the time that it takes to set a room and trying to juggle this with getting ready for the event can add a big stress factor. We ensure that all our products are to a high standard and we take our time to set the room so that our client can concentrate on other things and enjoy the experience/event. Do you have any plans for the future? Where to start? This year has been amazing, we moved in to our offices, we have a van and have been very busy with

our events. We have been fortunate to expand our client base and are looking to continue to do this. We thoroughly enjoy our jobs and hope this enthusiasm is conveyed to the client and hope to be even busier next year! So next time you’re tasked with planning an event whether it’s a conference, corporate dinner, wedding or celebration party, call Carolyn and Jen for a free quote and consultation: 07572 224060 (or fill in their online form at www.yourdayyourway.wales) 51

Sinclarslaw have recently added a new specialism to its list of services. We chat to private client lawyer Lisa Davies, who joined the firm in October this year, to find out more.

SINCLAIRSLAW Where did you work previously? I was Head of the Private Client Department at Leo Abse & Cohen in Cardiff. They were acquired by Slater & Gordon in May 2015 and I continued to head up the Wills & Probate Team in Wales until August of this year. I was with the firm for a total of six years.

What is your background Lisa? I graduated from Oxford University in 1993 and went on to complete the Legal Practice Course before finishing my training as a solicitor with a highly respected London firm. I have worked in a number of firms in Wales, including large multinationals and niche practices across the area and have developed a solid client following as well as links with accountants, financial advisers and other lawyers. I am respected by colleagues, other professionals and clients alike for my professional and exacting approach, as well as the breadth of my technical knowledge. What do you specialise in? I am what is often called a “private client” lawyer. This means that I specialise in wills and tax planning, probate and estate administration, trust work, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection cases, amongst other things. I have been invited by Sinclairslaw to set up a Private Client department here in Wales. This is a service we offer through our London office, but haven’t historically specialised in locally, yet it is something that most people will need at some time in their lives. What is special about the work you do? I am a fully accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly which is an organisation dedicated to providing specialist legal advice for older and vulnerable people, their families and carers. There are only eight other individual fully accredited members within a ten mile radius of Cardiff. Why Sinclairslaw? I am looking forward to developing this area of the business, with an emphasis on providing a service of the highest quality at affordable prices to clients in Wales, who appreciate a personal and friendly small-firm approach.

What other services does Sinclairslaw offer? The firm started out as a general legal practice and has since gained wide recognition for specialist services, including its nationally regarded education law team, which also deals with Special Educational Needs as well as Higher Education and community care law. The local offices also provide a wide range of general services, such as property, litigation and family law. How many offices do they have? Sinclairslaw currently has offices in Canton, Penarth, and London. New headquarters are nearing completion in Cardiff city centre. They will be on Churchill Way and should be ready for the New Year. Facilities will include a new lecture theatre and media centre as well as state-of-the-art office space and meeting areas for clients. 52

Dawn Richardson, of Dawn Clinic in Barry, has built up an enviable client base since she first opened five years ago. Now she is on the move to Penarth. We caught up with Dawn to find out why she’s moving to Penarth and about what the clinic offers.

DAWN A ESTHETIC CLINIC

Dawn, so why the move to Penarth? Well for those who know my clinic in Barry, it has quite a steep flight of stairs which some of my clients find difficult to climb. It’s also based on two floors, which again means more stairs. Also, I live in Penarth so I will be saving a few hours each week on commuting which will leave me more time to spend in the new clinic. Remind us of your background… I qualified first as a nurse and have been nursing for twenty years - my expertise has always been in skin care, including deep vein thrombosis. After moving to Penarth with my two children in 2009, I realised that I did not want to stay in the NHS forever and decided to expand my nursing skills. Being registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council as an independent prescriber allows me the privilege to treat underlying problems and not just the wrinkles.

I only use Medical Grade treatments that are research-based and passed for use in the UK. What treatments and procedures do you offer? I provide specialist skin treatments for men and women, including 8-point face lift, anti-wrinkle treatments, Aqualyx fat dissolving injections, chemical peels, dermal fillers, Dermaroller, EDS electronic Dermastamp, hyperhidrosis, Liquid Face Lift with Sculptra, Radiesse hands and the latest in skin lifting technology, the PDO thread lift.

“I offer free consultations as sometimes I might suggest a treatment that a client might not have previously considered.” 54

I also offer a range of cosmeceutical skin care products from Obagi, Aestheticare, Jan Marini and Skintech, Treating acne, ageing, rosacea, scarring, pigmentation and dark circles under the eyes. The new PDO lift sounds interesting, tell us more about that? This lift is an excellent and effective cosmetic technique to lift and tighten sagging tissues and is a great alternative for those who need a surgical face lift and do not want to go under the knife or use general anaesthetic. It re-defines facial contours and induces collagen production. The threads are made from 100% Polydioxanone which is widely used in surgical procedures. The thread forms an integrated support structure for the tissue of the face due to collagen synthesis. The lifting effect is at its peak at six months when collagen has formed around the threads. The lifting effect lasts for up to 2-3 years.

The PDO thread lift treatment, before and after results.

“From enhancing lips to liquid face lifts, the use of fillers, collagen stimulants, resurfacing and antioxidants and the thread lift, can change a client’s life and make them more confident and happier.” PDO threads can be safely used in combination with Botox, fillers, dermaroller and other skin resurfacing procedures. As a member of the Association of PDO Threads UK (APDOTUK), I have had up-to-date training and use only high quality CE marked devices (supplied by Neo Cosmedix Europe under the certification of Dr Jacques Otto, a leading expert trainer and speaker in PDO thread lifting). I perform the highly advanced 10-point face lift using dissolvable CE marked PDO threads. What makes the Dawn Clinic different to other clinics? All treatments are designed individually. I offer free consultations as sometimes I might suggest a treatment that a client might not have previously considered. I love all treatments that make a client’s skin look and feel younger,

and offer the full range of skincare and treatments to clients so that a tailored treatment plan can be offered. The ability to sculpt a client’s face is very satisfying. From enhancing lips to liquid face lifts, the use of fillers, collagen stimulants, resurfacing and antioxidants and the thread lift, can change a client’s life and make them more confident and happier. What would be the number one skin care tip you would give our readers? If I can offer one piece of advice, it would be to use a sunscreen daily up to 95% of skin ageing comes from exposure to UV light. Even when it’s cloudy, our skin can get damaged. Prevention is always better than cure, but if you need skin correction, or want to hold back the years and look younger and fresher as you do age, then I can help. 55

The kitchen is the hub of the home; a place not just for cooking, but for dining, socialising, working, and helping with homework and much, much more. Comprising of three generations of Master Craftsmen, Teulu continues to go from strength to strength, providing handmade, hand painted, bespoke kitchens and individual pieces of furniture, all made in their workshop in Brynmenyn.

TEULU

BESPOKE KITCHENS A Teulu kitchen is exclusively made to your own design and style. Units are made to measure and hence sizes are adapted to ensure a perfect fit in even the most awkward space. Using an experienced, professional kitchen designer is key. They will be able to help you make the best use of the space; good designers know what works and what doesn’t. They know what needs to be included in a design, how to make the space functional as well as appealing. Teulu have recently joined forces with Anthony Soroko and John Griffiths to set up Korona Kitchens.

Between them they will oversee the running of the showroom, sales and designing. 56

This Teulu kitchen was installed into an area that was previously two rooms. One wall was taken out to open up the space which allowed for more light and space. The kitchen is now a much more social, relaxing area for the whole family to chill out. All building works completed by A One Construction.

This Korona Kitchen was purchased on a supply and fit basis. The minor building works undertaken by A One Construction.

KORONA

KITCHEN SPECIALISTS Whilst Teulu is all about handmade, bespoke units, Korona Kitchens’ is to provide quality kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms in a range of styles and designs that are sold rigid, selfassembled units. If required, flat pack can be provided. All designs can be purchased supply only or supply and fit to suit your needs. If enlisting Korona to arrange your fittings as an all-inclusive package, they will ensure that everything is fully completed to the highest standards and satisfaction using only the best and most reliable, professional tradesmen. At their showroom, they have information and samples on every

aspect of pulling your dream kitchen to life from appliances, worktops, tiles and taps to lights etc. They can advise on all options available, recommending good quality fittings and fixtures and recognisable brand names. With the family links to established building company, A One Construction, they can also provide information, guidance and prices on any building works required to realise your dream renovation. There is so much product information and availability out there, it can all seem a bit overwhelming. We ask Director, Fiona Evans, how to make sense of it all. “Because we work with kitchens day in and day out, we’re able to bring 57

our experience and expertise to the table and help you hone your ideas and thoughts into the perfect kitchen for your taste and budget. We have a real passion and enthusiasm for making your dreams a reality. It really doesn’t have to be complicated. In a changing world, with pollsters and political experts consistently wrong, where should you turn? “Try Bart Simpson!” jokes Neil Ballard of Lewis Ballard Accountants. Way back in 2000, the irreverent Simpsons character saw a future with Donald Trump as President of America. Intended as a ridiculous joke, it’s hard to believe it’s actually come true. Neil ponders the implausible…

L EWIS BALLARD

These are certainly interesting times. Once, when someone with silver blonde hair, huge white teeth and a scary tangerine tan monopolised the press, you knew it was just an outrageous reality TV star. Now the reality TV star is also US president! And what about Brexit? Whether for or against - who really predicted that one? And who really knows what to do next? The unexpected happens surprisingly often… Bart may not have all the answers but, joking aside, in turbulent times old ways of thinking won’t do. Back in 1789 Benjamin Franklin wrote, “…nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” However, as businesses worry about Brexit, Trump or Isis, it’s true that our tax obligations still remain. Yet with quarterly digital tax submissions beginning in 2018 even this system is undergoing a complete overhaul.

Time for a fresh approach to tax? Finding even the thought of tax bills painful, many people wait until the last possible minute to look at their Personal Tax, VAT or Corporation Tax affairs. Resulting in overdue tax bills and often hefty fines, penalties and interest charges too. This puts extreme pressure on cash-flow, which seriously damages their business. Just when it’s crucial to know exactly how you’re doing, this ‘I hate paying tax’ last minute approach leads to poor decisions, extra stress and, more often than not, even more tax than necessary. Under the quarterly tax regime, fines and penalties could mount-up even quite sharply. Wagging that tail… My advice is always to make sure the tax tail isn’t wagging the business dog! In other words make decisions to strengthen your business, not just to hide from tax. 58

After all tax is the by-product of success. If you’re not successful you won’t have any tax to pay, but you won’t have profits either. Who wants a business like that?’ Meeting the Digital Challenge… Lewis Ballard are Gold Partners of Xero, the world’s leading cloud accounting providers. Our in-house expert Sam Howells, presents on the benefits of using this cutting edge software at the Apple Showroom. ‘It’s been amazing, working alongside two such prestigious companies. It gives us confidence that our approach is providing the best tools and strategies for people to use.’ Saving you tax… Our team of Chartered Accountants and our Chartered Tax adviser Johanna Evans will save you tax and structure your business to keep as much of your hard earned cash as possible.

We also focus on building brilliant businesses, which prosper in these most challenging times. Giving you the rewards your hard work deserves, with the time to enjoy them. When you know how you’re doing in real-time, how much money you make and what you owe, you’re ready to seize opportunities, without mounting tax liabilities holding you back. Because, in this world, when everything is uncertain, anything is possible!

With so many businesses offering bifold doors and windows, how can you know who to trust to do a good job? Mr and Mrs Jones from Whitchurch made the right choice in choosing ….

A LEXANDER JAMES BIFOLDS

Do you enjoy living in Whitchurch? We love it here. We moved here at the beginning of July. We did move to Radyr for a short while but we found that we couldn’t settle and so moved back to Whitchurch. Our bungalow has a lovely view of the skyline and it’s very convenient for the village. There’s everything you need here in terms of shops. You don’t need a car as the public transport is good. It has a lovely village feel. There’s also a good Welsh community here and, as I’m from west Wales, I particularly like that. Who lives in your home with you? My husband and our dog Bella.

“We would be happy to recommend them to family, friends and colleagues.”

How did you hear about Alexander James Bifolds? We saw a feature in Vale Life magazine on a property in the Vale and then we googled the company and liked what we saw. Did you get any other quotations? Yes, we got three other quotations but AAI were the most reasonable. Was price the only reason you wanted to work with them? No. When Andy came around to see us, we found him most personable and co-operative and he came back to us very quickly with his quotation and ideas. What work did AAI carry out for you? The provided us with a three-leaf set of bifold doors and two windows to the lounge, a kitchen door which affords a better view of our garden and a bedroom window. 60

“We got three other quotations but AAI were the most reasonable.” How long did the process take? I wasn’t here when the bifold doors were installed but I was here for the windows. I found the workmen to be superb. Did you find AAI good value for money? Yes we did and we would be happy to recommend them to family, friends and colleagues. Are you happy with the finished product? Very. A family member suggested we buy online to get a cheaper deal but I didn’t like the idea of that as there is no redress should something go wrong. We are very happy that we made the right choice.

A Cardiff based jewellery designer has teamed up with a national Welsh charity in hopes of raising funds for grassroots community organisations across Wales.

DAFFODIL

COLLECTION Designer, Emma-Kate Francis, has collaborated with the Community Foundation in Wales to launch a new jewellery collection. The collection is called ‘Daffodil’, inspired by the logo of the Foundation, with each piece handmade from sterling silver, gold plated and complete with a pearl centre. A percentage from each purchase will be donated to the Foundation and the design is set to be officially launched at the beginning of November.

Emma-Kate has collaborated previously, designing pieces for the Victoria & Albert Museum and renowned international jewellers, Jersey Pearl. Each piece of jewellery is hand-crafted in her boutique studio in the heart of Cardiff ’s Arcade Quarter. “When the Community Foundation in Wales approached me I was thrilled as it’s a wonderful charity to support. I hope people love the new Daffodil jewellery collection and continue to support the great work the Foundation is doing across Wales.”

The Community Foundation in Wales is an independent charity, established to strengthen communities by providing a permanent source of funding for community-based projects in Wales.

Mari-Wyn Elias-Jones, Development Manager at the Foundation, said, “We are so excited to have a Community Foundation design created by Emma-Kate. As a charity we are passionate about promoting philanthropy in Wales and are always looking for new and interesting ways to do this, which makes this partnership particularly perfect.” “It has been a pleasure working with Emma-Kate and the Foundation team are pleased to see our supporters are as excited about this new collection as we are. I was recently in Canada for the North American Festival of Wales and there was a lot of interest in the pieces I had on display, so I can’t wait to launch them during our Philanthropy Week events.” The Daffodil collection is available for pre-order at www.emmakatefrancis.com
