www.citylifecardiff.co.uk 0845 180 2345 Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW Passionate about Cardiff We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. City Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Cardiff for the people of Cardiff. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore City Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in City Life or on www.citylifecardiff.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in City Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright City Life 2016. All rights reserved. Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to City Life. Visit www.citylifecardiff.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! City Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Cardiff and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

The Gwaelod is another firm favourite - perfect for Sunday lunch but you’ll have to book, this great pub is always popular. If you like Italian, The Italian Way in Canton, and Giovanni’s opposite the New Theatre are firm favourites.

Health is on everyone’s minds at this time of year with coughs and colds. We visited the European Scanning Centre which was a real eye-opener (feature on page 46 & 47) and our friends at Rhiwbina Dental continue to champion excellent dental care at every opportunity (page 40 & 41).

Talking about Canton, if you’re looking for a pair of good shoes, visit the Canton Cobbler. They recently brought a good, but tired, pair of much-loved boots back from the dead. Superb service and great people - check out their feature on page 16.

If you’re in the mood to compete, you could take your chances on page 53. We have afternoon tea at Cowbridge’s iconic Penny Farthing and a serious pampering at Amorio in Penarth up for grabs.

You’ll notice the RNLI Penarth Fashion Week features prominently in this issue. We were delighted to be involved and what started out as a small idea has grown into a brilliant spectacle. We can’t wait for next year.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas. See you again in the spring. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

If you’re stuck for gifts, there are plenty of ideas and if you’re looking for cards, Halls Of Llandaff have a truly amazing collection. Well worth a visit.

NAOHOA

LUXURY BESPOKE TATTOOS

NAOHOA (pronounced ‘naya-howa’) Luxury Bespoke Tattoos caters to those of you who appreciate tattoos but feel too intimidated to enter typical establishments. The environment is light, airy and classy with customer service inspired by 5* hotels. Born and raised in Newport, founder Naomi Hoang studied Fine Art and Graphic Design throughout her life and has pursued it professionally for over eight years. After obtaining a degree in Illustration and working as a Concept Artist in the gaming industry for companies such as SEGA, Naomi later delved into the world of tattooing.

Three years on, she continues to ink clients who travel from as far as London, Birmingham, and Pembrokeshire (to name a few) for her art and expertise. At NAOHOA, you will get first-class customer service; from one-to-one consultations, complimentary looseleaf teas and a free gift bag after your first tattoo. Travelling clients are also treated to freshly-baked Welsh Cakes as a ‘Welcome to Wales’! NAOHOA’s one-person-per-day tattoo policy means you have her full attention throughout your stay and feel assured that your art will be given the time and attention it deserves. 6

Tattoos are increasingly growing in popularity and social acceptance. One studio promises to bring a fresh new twist to an age-old industry.

NAOHOA specialises in custom designed tattoos. Based on your brief, Naomi uses her skills as a professional concept artist to create multiple design options for you to choose from and, with your feedback, polishes and refines it until you’re in love with the final piece. “It’s with you for life, so it’s as important to me as it is for you. The design process is very collaborative and we work together until we develop a design you love. You’re not generic, so why should your tattoo be?” says Naomi.

“You will get first-class customer service.”

“NAOHOA specialises in custom designed tattoos.” Conscious of social issues, Naomi offers clients the opportunity to donate £1 per hour of tattooing towards one of three charities, at no additional cost: Mind, British Dyslexia Association and Huggard (the Cardiff-based homeless charity). Along with using organic, veganfriendly products, this is her way of giving back and doing good in the world.

Do you have a tattoo idea that’s been put on hold until you find the right place or artist? Perhaps you’ve felt too intimidated to approach anyone. If this resonates with you, give Naomi a call or email to secure a booking. Alternatively, if this sounds like a friend you know, gift certificates are sold all year round and can be posted to your door - it’s sure to make a truly unique present.

“The design process is very collaborative and we work together.” 7

Translated as ‘foot of the mountain’ (Gwaelod-yGarth), the Gwaelod Inn is well positioned on the Taff-Ely Ridgeway Path for ramblers, cyclists (and hang-gliders) as well as its appreciative locals.

THE GWAELOD INN

Barbara and Richie Angell took over the popular pub over a decade ago and it’s been a much loved family run, independent business ever since. Although they’re thrilled to have won numerous awards (they were CAMRA winners in 2011 and 2013 and runners up in 2016 - as well as being selected as having the second best pub views in the country by the Guardian Magazine), Barbara tells us it’s not all about the accolades but more about their regulars; be they drinkers, foodies, cyclists, walkers, dog walkers, sports people, and some seriously anti-sports people apparently. This is definitely a pub where the focus is on getting together and socialising.

You may be familiar with the Garth Mountain if you’ve seen the film ‘The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain’ starring Hugh Grant - this was based on the Garth. The pub boasts spectacular views; it’s hard to believe we’re a mere eleven minute train ride from the centre of Cardiff. They have a homely downstairs bar, with a pool table, which is family and dog friendly and which has a great reputation locally for serving home cooked pub food. The upstairs restaurant seats sixty and can also seat twenty for private dining. The Gwaelod’s team of chefs cook with top quality, fresh produce which is delivered daily from local suppliers. 8

They’re open for lunches, dinners and, of course, their ever popular Sunday roasts. The Gwaelod Inn have a 5 star food hygiene rating and 4 stars from Visit Wales for their B&B accommodation which is perfect for the steady stream of business professionals and people staying for holidays, walkers, cyclists and, of course, the rugby. And, as if that’s not enough, they also have an onsite brewery called the Violet Cottage Brewery - also known as ‘The Brew With A View’, where they brew a selection of beers which are served exclusively in their own bar and, as you’d expect from an establishment at the top of their game, the home brews are becoming increasingly popular.

Locals tell us the waft of the beer being brewed on a Sunday morning is something to behold. We’re making a mental note to return on a Sunday! Yes, we highly recommend a trip to north Cardiff for this outstanding indie pub where they hold weekly pub quizzes and occasional live music as well as an annual Bake Off and Cider and Sausage Festival. The last word must go to Barbara and Richie who would like to wish all their staff and regulars a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without our amazing team of friendly and professional staff, many of whom have been with us from day one, and of course our much loved regulars. Thank you all.”

Located near Victoria Park, Jam Kitchens has fast become well known for providing bespoke kitchens at realistic prices. They aren’t afraid to step outside the box and push the boundaries of design and choose optimum material. Design is so important in our job, customers are putting their trust in us to come up with ideas to suit their lifestyles, to give them what they have always desired.

JAM’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL We are taking a dream, a vision and making it into a reality. Jam has a passion for design, for working with new materials and most of all, a passion for changing lives. What is trendy at the moment? We are finding that we are looking to improve peoples home-life, by putting a focus on what is important to them. The Kitchen was once a room, a room where you prepared food and that was about it, but kitchens are becoming the centre piece of the home. Somewhere the family can meet, eat, chat and socialise, by opening up rooms, extending the kitchen space, this enables the kitchen to be part of the home where family & friends can spend time together. As we all know the pace of life is only getting faster, the focus on quality time is key. What materials are you designing into your Kitchens? There is so much choice, where do we start? Glass, concrete, composite materials, quartz, recycled & reclaimed materials, we can go on and on. Painted Kitchen doors have exploded onto the market in the past 2 years, focusing more on the crispness and quality of the door design. Work surfaces are becoming more important, with a huge variety of different materials being available, your spoiled for choice! Then there is lighting‌ An element of the kitchen that used to be down to the electrician, but now we are designing lighting into our kitchen designs to bring you out of the darkness and into a warm stylish kitchen-space. How has 2017 been for Jam? We have been extremely busy this year, looking ahead into 2018 this is set to continue. Word is getting around detailing our exceptional level of service, our flair for design. People also really love that all our kitchens are manufactured in Wales, this means we know exactly what materials we are using and where they are from.

Skiing and snowboarding are amazing hobbies that can be enjoyed all year ‘round, and you don’t even need snow! Cardiff ’s excellent Ski and Snowboarding Centre in Fairwater can offer all of this and more.

BUTTER BOXES, R AINBOWS City Life dropped in for a chat with Manager, Richard Hughes. There’s a lot happening at this superb facility and we’re keen to find out more. So if you don’t know your butter box from your rainbow box, read on. Richard, what’s the Ski Centre offering over the next few months? We have a new freestyle development evening for beginners who want to learn freestyle skiing or snowboarding - it’s 4pm to 6pm every Sunday. In the session, we will focus on different features each week. We have qualified instructors on hand to give each budding skier all the attention they need to get them standing tall. We also have a big freestyle evening every Sunday for the more advance skiers and snowboarders. This is a brilliant evening - we get all the freestyle features out.

Can you tell us some more about freestyle skiing? We’re already the leading freestyle ski slope in Wales; our aim is to become more prominent in the UK freestyle scene. Our freestyle features are all made by a German company called Schneestern, they are responsible for kitting out some of the biggest and most famous parks across the world. They are all full-sized features, fully adapted to dry slopes in order for us to offer the best quality and safest experience. We will be the only dry slope in the UK to feature a professional and purposebuilt stair section, for those looking to develop urban riding (and because they look super cool).

“We’re already the leading freestyle ski slope in Wales.” 18

Our features also include an 8m butter box, a 6m rainbow box, an 8m rollercoaster box and an 8m industrial pipe for the more advanced (like the ones at the top section of the slopestyle course in the Olympics), as well as a few others that we can chop and change to offer a huge range of options and courses. We also have a viewing platform to make spectating just as fun as taking part, watching freestyle skiing and snowboarding isn’t a sport that you can sit comfortably watching it really keeps you on the edge of your seat! Do you have any other activities here? In addition to skiing? Other than skiing and snowboarding, we offer super-tubing. You head to the top of the slope with a big rubber ring and then slide down - forwards, backwards, sideways, spinning around, in a pair, as a train, over a jump etc.

& ROLLER COASTERS Tubing is really popular throughout the year and especially in the summer, when we run drop-in sessions every day. We also hold private birthday parties, staff events or charity activity sessions. We’re hooked by just the sound of it! What advice would you give our readers who aren’t sure where to start with skiing or snowboarding? It really depends on you as a person. Both sports are super accessible to anyone and everyone, however, I’d recommend families with young children try skiing first. Legend goes that it’s easier to learn how to ski: this is probably because you’re going forwards rather than sideways and everyone knows how to stand up on two separate feet, so it’s less foreign than snowboarding. You can also look at it in terms of how you learn; when

you learn to ski, you learn the easy way first and the hard way afterwards, so it takes a lot longer to get really good. When you learn to snowboard, there’s only really one way - the hard way. But once you’ve got it… the whole mountain becomes your playground. Lastly, you have to think what you want to get out of it. The only thing skiing and snowboarding have in common is that they go downhill over frozen water. The way you do it, the way you approach the mountain and experience the mountain is completely different. Again, if I were to generalise (and this is in no way set in stone at all as snow sports are so diverse and creative), skiing benefits speed, technique and precision, while snowboarding is all about playing, exploration and cruising around with your buddies. 19

“Tubing is really popular.”

Never been in a set of skis or strapped to a snowboard before and want to know how to get started? Or maybe you want to brush up on your existing skills? Give Cardiff Ski and Snowboard Centre a call…

Penarth’s first fashion week took place in October to raise money for the RNLI. What was originally planned twelve months earlier as a single event evolved into something much bigger with the passion from the RNLI fundraising team, local businesses, the crew and more importantly, the community.

PENARTH FASHION WEEK After months of planning, Penarth was treated to a mixture of events which encapsulated fashion, beauty, food and most importantly prosecco and gin!

The events sponsored Beverly Davies Penny and Valco Scaffolding took place in church halls, shops, bars, cafés and Penarth Lifeboat station itself. Gingers kicked off Fashion Week in tremendous style with a fashion show at St Augustine’s church hall, followed by an event at The Queen B Boutique, with an after party at Etc. Brush with Beauty had Delilah make up demonstrations and this was followed by an evening at Ener-chi with ESPA (very relaxing!). There was an open evening at Refresh Clinic, gin tasting at Crepe Escape and an event at Blu Hair Design with Dawn Clinic showing the latest in hair and aesthetics, followed by an after party at Willmore’s. We then saw the opening of Nathan Palmer’s showroom, a lovely addition to Penarth. The weekend was soon upon us and it was time to transform the RNLI station – in 48 hours it had to be an operational station, catwalk and restaurant – nothing like a challenge!

Thank you to Jason Hall of C3i who provided all of the staging, lighting and sound for the fashion show and dinner at the station along with his tremendous team managed by Jen Payne (crew member). The final dressing of the station was down to Events @ Room 11.

An extremely busy week that brought the Penarth community together raising money to help keep our local RNLI heroes kitted out with the best clothing, training and equipment – this week of fashion, fun and friendship raised over £11,000 which will go a long way to help save lives at sea.

Saturday saw The Queen B Boutique and Nathan Palmer put on a spectacular fashion show, compered by Wenda James-Rowe where the RNLI designed dress and jacket were on show, along with the latest trends for the winter months. This was followed by an after party at Penarth Yacht Club where more fun was had! With sore heads on the Sunday the station was reformed to a fine dining restaurant, ready for the three-course meal prepared by James Sommerin Penarth’s Michelin Star chef. Along the way, Vale Life and City Life Cardiff, our chosen sole media sponsors, had showcased the events beautifully and their videographer Ben and photographer Jamie worked their socks off to capture every moment on film. 20

We are now working on ideas for 2018. If anyone would like to get in touch, please contact Caroline Eva. 07899 717386 caroline.eva@hotmail.co.uk @CarolineEva10

When Caroline Eva approached me to be the sole media sponsors for Penarth Fashion Week in support of the RNLI, we were very excited.

PENARTH FASHION WEEK WHAT BROUGHT VALE LIFE AND THE RNLI TOGETHER When we were asked to be involved, my immediate response was yes. Mark was a big supporter of the RNLI having always had a real affinity with the sea growing up. Mark said, “I was always swimming and snorkelling as a kid, and my dad was a diver with the South Wales Police Underwater Search Unit so I understood, even from a young age, that the sea can be a dangerous place.” I am a strong swimmer and, even though I’m not a great lover of swimming in the sea, I appreciate the courage of the RNLI teams that risk their lives every year to save those in trouble. I also love fashion so it was, as they say, a no brainer. At our first meeting with the committee, ideas were flying around the room. Mark came up with the idea of designing a dress made out of the RNLI flag (a la Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack dress). The ideas flowed from there about how we could help promote the event. Features in Vale Life and City Life Cardiff followed, plus relentless posting online and through our vast, social media network and, soon enough, the events were upon us. I cannot say enough how proud we both are to have been involved with such a brilliant group of people. The professionalism and effort invested has been immense. We’ve been blown away by everyone involved and those who supported each event by attending and donating. Now that the first Fashion Week is over, we’re all looking forward to getting around the table to plan 2018 - notepads at the ready! Jennifer 26

Alex Richards and Andrew Farmer

It’s been another incredible year for Alexander James of Swansea. As the company’s reputation has been growing, primarily, from its many happy customers. Mr and Mrs Lewis of Cowbridge are one of these and are now fully ensconced in their stunning new home. “Our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape.” “Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation.”

For the third year Chris Macnamara, MD of the multi award-winning Brogue Trader in Cardiff ’s beautiful Morgan Arcade, has hosted Beaujolais Day in aid of good causes. This year, Spiro and Lisa Borg’s beautiful Cornerstone on Charles Street, Cardiff was the venue - and what a venue!

THE BROGUE TR ADER

160 people attended a fun-packed day at the beautiful Grade II listed building, with entertainment from Wales’ leading magician, Bryan Gunton. Rugby legend Sam Warburton, and four times Welsh capped, and Newport Dragons Centre Tyler Morgan, also attended. Taking part in a rugby inspired Q&A was BBC Radio and ex-Welsh and British Lion, Eddie Butler, and Chris was assisted in his co-hosting duties by exWelsh rugby legend Rupert Moon. The fun-packed day didn’t end there. A superb meal prepared by the talented Cornerstone brigade ensured the great and the good enjoyed a superb dining experience and danced the night away to the soulful sounds of Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band. The City Hospice, formally George Thomas Hospice, and The Cathedral Charity will both benefit from the proceeds. Chris Macnamara said, “We’re immensely proud that we’ve raised a whopping £48,000. We want to thank all those lovely people, and companies, who put their hands in their pockets and supported the event by buying places and tables. Without them, this fabulous day simply wouldn’t be the success it is.” The whole event was funded by Chris and Spiro themselves, so every single penny raised went directly to the charities.

Chris positively beams with pride, and rightly so. “Not bad for a little shoe shop!” he enthuses. And he’s absolutely right. Since opened the doors just four years ago, The Brogue Trader has grown impressively, with eight beautiful shops across the UK and plans for more in 2018. The family-run business is also the official formal shoe supplier and sponsor to both the Welsh national rugby and football teams. Chris added, “This event is made doubly special because of the generosity of Spiro and Lisa Borg, as they donated the gorgeous Cornerstone facility and all four courses and wine. I’d also like to thank my dear friends; Russell Scott-Lawson from Hawkes Bespoke Menswear, and Laings The Jewellers (Parkhouse) on the Hayes, Cardiff city centre for donating some beautiful raffle prizes. Both company’s share my passion for excellent service and certainly deserve your custom.” Tables were sold to the Welsh FA, the WRU and NatWest, as well as many other leading Cardiff businesses. The good and generous spirits of everyone involved ensured the day was a real success and The Brogue Trader Does Beaujolais has firmly established itself as one of the premier events on Cardiff ’s social calendar. We can’t wait for the fourth. 34

Dr Sohère Roked (pronounced Sa-hair Row-ked) is a General Practitioner with a specialist interest in Integrative medicine. Her passion is to help empower patients to take control of their healthcare using a range of tools.

HORMONES

“Dr Roked uses a combination of approaches.”

THE ULTIMATE BALANCING ACT Born in England and brought up in Wales, Sohère studied medicine at Southampton University and graduated in 2003. She has worked across hospitals in England and Wales, in the specialties of A&E, general medicine and surgery, women’s health, otolaryngology, and spent three years working as a psychiatrist before becoming a GP. It was this broad knowledge of medicine that made her realise that the current conventional medical practice is far from complete. It did not provide her with the tools to understand and address the emotional, spiritual, environmental, social, nutritional, lifestyle and psychological issues that influence the health and wellbeing of so many patients. Not all conditions fully improve with conventional treatments, which is something Dr Sohère has seen as an NHS GP.

She has a strong belief that to achieve true health, you must look at the physical in conjunction with the mind as the two are closely linked and impact on each other, and this is often overlooked in conventional NHS health care. Dr Sohère has a broad range of knowledge about both conventional and holistic medicine, and uses this to combine the two in her recommendations for better health, which is called Integrative Medicine. She has studied with the British College of Integrative Medicine and has been taught by experts in the field from the UK, Australia and the USA with the British College of Integrative Medicine in the U.K and under Dr Neal Rouzier (Medical Director of the Preventive Medicine Clinic, Palm Springs, California) as well as the Cenegenics Institute, A4M and the Institute of Functional Medicine, and is now recognised as one of the few GPs in the UK to cover both conventional and holistic medicine. 36

Dr Roked’s covers a wide range of concerns, such as exhaustion, chronic/ adrenal fatigue, menopause, fertility, thyroid disorders and menopause, with her number one aim to decrease her client’s symptoms. With her warm, friendly, down to earth manner, Dr Roked uses a combination of approaches, including bio-identical hormones, encouraging each patient to see themselves as a ‘whole’ and, wherever possible, using natural healthcare that works in synergy with the body. She looks at nutrition, fitness, stress and digestive health as well as potential chemical imbalances and the presence of parasites, toxicity, chronic inflammation and body acidification, treating as necessary to restore the body back into balance to help to achieve a happier, healthier day to day life. In addition, Dr Roked is the author of The Tiredness Cure. Dr Sohère has been prescribing bioidentical hormones for many years and sees hormone balance as the foundation of health.

She also believes in the importance of preventative medicine and creates individualised wellness programmes for her patients to achieve optimum health.

The key is to look at the person in front of her, listen to them, and treat them holistically, taking into account their preferences and lifestyle.

Some women feel they must just suffer at this time of life, or see taking hormones as a failure. Studies are now showing taking hormones at the start of the menopause benefit a woman not only in terms of symptoms, but in terms of cardiovascular health, bone density and neurological health. Hormones should not be feared, but you do need to see an expert who understands all the evidence and can help you weigh up the pros and cons.

As an NHS GP, Dr Roked started noticing an epidemic of exhausted, lethargic patients so she set her sights on a solution to their sleepiness. The empowering guide, The Tiredness Cure is now hailed as a cure to fatigue and the secret to more energy, feeling great and looking younger.

For Sohere, the two most important aspects are not doing harm and being of service to the patients she sees and listening to their needs. She provides them with options so that she can help their symptoms and give them a say in how they are treated. One size doesn’t fit all. She is also aware that some women feel fantastic on conventional HRT and she have no problem with that either.

In January 2017 Dr Roked launched The ALiVE Retreat in Fuerteventura, a 5-day retreat consisting of yoga, healthy eating, daily health talks, meditation and a medical consultation. Whatever your health concern Dr Sohère Roked can change your health and subsequently change your life.

What clients say... SALON OWNER “I can’t thank you enough for sending Lawrence to teach our cutting course, myself and the team were so pleased. I have to say after 20 years experience of courses this has been my favourite, the most informative and most fun. The passion he has for his job has rubbed off on my team.” STUDENT “The course was well presented and it encouraged me to try something out of my comfort zone, I loved the course and how the educator delivered it.”

So tell us what exciting plans are ahead for Precision in 2018? It’s an exciting time for the team here at Precision. I am delighted to announce that the ever growing demand for our educators to travel the country inspiring stylists has lead to the exciting launch of our Precision Education Centre. When you work as a hairdresser the most exciting part of the job is that you never stop learning. Trends and fashion move at such a fast pace. That is why we feel it is so important to share the knowledge of our educators not only in house but with others working in the industry.

Who can attend the courses? The good news is that our bespoke courses are accessible to everyone. The courses are designed for all levels from beginners, recently qualified, and of course those who are experienced, but are looking for inspiration and training in new trends.

How did Precision Education come about? Our education team led by Education Director Lawrence Taylor have been busy this last year taking training on to the road across the UK, teaching at various salons. The feedback has been fantastic. Whilst this will continue, we are delighted to now launch this locally at Precision in Cardiff. The courses aim to inspire, improve and educate.

Where will the courses be held? The courses will be held at our training centre in Cardiff. There is also an option for salon owners to have in house training if required, this is something our clients have found beneficial in rejuvenating their business.

So how can people find out more about the courses you will have available? If anyone would like any further information, or have any questions about the courses we will be running they can contact myself Claire, or one of our Education Team who would be happy to help.

Who will be teaching the courses? Precision’s Education team is made up of strong educators with years of experience and an incredible knowledge and passion for the hairdressing industry.

“ It’s an exciting time for the team here at Precision.” 43

Technology is changing fast in the medical world, especially in the MRI scanning sector.

EUROPEAN

The European Scanning Centre looks more like a boutique hotel than a medical centre. We met with manager Melanie to find out more.

He has a large clinical practice which has given him considerable insight into the needs of referring clinicians ensuring the ESC delivers a first class imaging service.

Please tell us about the facility... The facility in Cardiff comprises of a new Open and Upright MRI Scanner, the only one of its type in Wales. n The scanner is completely open above and to the front and rear, thereby avoiding claustrophobia. n Patients can be scanned in their position of pain whether it is sitting, standing, bending or lying down. n Extra wide space ensures larger patients feel comfortable and relaxed during the scan.

Please tell us about the ESC team... Melanie is Centre Manager along with two Radiographers (Carol-Ann and Ria). The Reception staff are Lisa and Nicola.

How long has the European Scanning Centre been in operation? Since 2003. The ESC has developed a reputation for providing a high quality and professional imaging service. Dr Paul Jenkins MA MD FRCP is the Medical Director of European Scanning Centre and also a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist. He graduated from Cambridge University and The Royal London Hospital before undertaking specialist training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

The Radiographers have many years experience of working in MRI scanners across South Wales - both in the NHS and private sector. Melanie previously worked in the Open MRI scanner, which was in the same premises as European Scanning Centre, for over fifteen years. Tell us about the ambience and interior décor of the centre... The Centre has been carefully designed with patient comfort at the forefront with a warm and welcoming reception area and staff who have been specially chosen for their ability to put patients at ease. We have invested in a five star environment where the emphasis is on patient comfort & relaxation. Whilst being scanned, patients are able to watch television, listen to the radio or are welcome to bring in their music of choice. 46

Two way audio facilities allow our radiographers to communicate and reassure patients during their scan and the viewing window ensures that both the patient and the radiographer are always in the line of vision.

How does the scanner work? The scanner is a large super conducting magnet - it is the only superconductive MRI scanner that enables fully open and upright imaging of the spine and joints, allowing patients to be scanned in a non claustrophobic and full weight bearing position. Imaging in the sitting or standing position can provide a more accurate diagnosis thus improving overall patient outcome. It is a more patient friendly scanner than the usual tunnel scanners - so more suited to patients who are anxious, claustrophobic or are unable to lie down. How much does the scanner cost? The refurbishment of the centre and new scanner has cost almost £2m. It’s a considerable investment but worth every penny as the benefits to patients’ wellbeing are well worth it.

SCANNING CENTRE Why do patients choose the scanner? The scanner is U shaped so is open above the patient unlike closed MRI scanners thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.

How long does the scan take? Each part we scan takes approx thirty minutes but we allow more time for the appointment so that patients can get comfortable in the scan room.

Do I need a doctor’s referral? Ideally it is better to be referred for a scan by your GP, a consultant, physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath. However we do accept self referrals for certain scans.

Where do your patients come from? The majority of our patients come from all over Wales and the West Country as there are very few of these scanners in operation. But we have also scanned patients from overseas including Ireland and the Middle East.

How quickly are results generated? We aim to get the results back to the referrer within forty-eight hours. How many patients can you see? It depends on the part of the body and how many areas we need to examine. We tailor appointments to suit the needs of the patient as some patients have specific mobility issues or other needs that need extra time. We don’t want to rush our patients as many need more time for the examination than the standard closed MRI scanner due to claustrophobia or mobility issues.

How do your fees compare? The ESC is recognised by all the major insurers. We aim to be as competitive as possible in our pricing and do not seek to charge a premium for the specialist services we offer. The self pay cost depends on the number of areas being scanned - however our prices are competitive to other open MRI scanners. We don’t profess to be a provider of “conveyor belt scanning” as we tailor our service to provide the extra time and support for patients to be able complete their scan.

“The scanner is U shaped so is open above... thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.” 47

Wow! What a year. 10,000 waxes, 2,000 brow treatments, plus many hundreds of loyal, happy customers later; it really has been a memorable 2017 for the award-winning Madame Wax.

R AISING EYEBROWS We caught up with salon owner, Adele Bradbury, to get the inside scoop on all the gossip.

What have been your highlights so far this year? There have been so many! We’ve expanded the team we now have seven highly skilled waxologists. It means we’ve been able to offer more appointment slots to our lovely customers. 2017 brought more success at the Cardiff Life Awards. Once again we won the Beauty Category – recognition of which the whole team are incredibly proud. And perhaps the biggest change took place inside the salon itself following the launch of our dedicated Brow Bar back in February. Madame Brow is an official HD brow salon. As a result, we now offer a full range of brow, eyelash, and threading services alongside our top-totoe waxing menu. Ooh. Tell us more about Madame Brow It’s been so exciting to extend our offering at the salon and our customers love it. Brow treatments are the perfect complement to waxing. We’ve gone all in on customer experience and invested heavily in this new service. Our Brow Bar chairs are the most luxurious you’ll find and our Brow Artists are expertly trained. So far, Madame Brow has been a big hit.Customers love that they can get all their hair removal treatments done in one place. What can waxing newbies expect? We believe we offer one of the most comfortable waxing experiences ever! This starts from the moment you enter the salon. The Madame Wax vibe is fun and friendly and there’s always plenty of banter and chatter to put you at ease. We believe regular waxing should be a treat so we’ve created an environment where you can relax, have a giggle, and kick back with some fresh coffee or tea or even the occasional tipple!

“We’ve gone all in on customer experience.”

Our waxologists have a natural ability to put clients at ease. This helps to make the wax as pain-free as possible. Of course, everyone has their own pain threshold - and you’ll probably feel something because hair is removed from the root. However, the combination of a relaxed client and a highly skilled therapist means you can get all the ‘ooh’ without the ‘ouch’.

Do you offer a money-back guarantee? Absolutely! This was something we introduced earlier this year because we’re so confident in the quality of our treatments. All staff are trained in advanced techniques and are put through a rigorous induction period to ensure their technique and style meets our exceptionally high standards. Our clients deserve the best and that’s what we promise. Because we believe in our ability to deliver, we offer a 100% money-back guarantee. If a client tells their therapist they’re not happy before they leave the treatment room, they don’t pay a penny. Tell us how you reward regular customers Clients get the best results long-term if they have regular treatments – so we decided to reward those people who make their treatments a priority. In fact, our regulars will never again pay full price for their waxing! That’s because we reward these clients with a 10% discount if they return for the same wax treatment within six weeks (or four weeks for the Brow Bar). Looking forward, what do you think will be hot this season? I predict that clients will demand beautifully shaped eyebrows and super soft skin - we are entering the party season after all! Eyebrows matter because they make up 80% of your selfie! But don’t worry if your brows are unruly or overgrown, it’s nothing that a professional brow treatment can’t sort. The right shape, arch, and definition can enhance your natural features. Brow treatment can make such an instant difference. 49

In terms of waxing, there’s something sensual about smooth, hair-free skin – it’s a look that always teams well with a little black dress (or your favourite party frock). We’re known for our attention to detail and are fanatical about removing every single unwanted hair. To the extent that we’ll pull out a magnifying glass when treating underarms to ensure nothing has been missed! The trees are bare, the nights are drawing in and a nip of frost spikes the air. The glow of Summer has faded fast and the golden leaves of autumn have all but disappeared.

LEWIS BALLARD It’s winter - the time for pulling on cosy jumpers and snuggling up in front of a glowing fire to write your Christmas list. In the exciting frenzy of choosing party outfits, scouting gifts and planning the holiday season with family and friends, it’s tempting to forget about everything else and leave more serious matters until the new year. Yet, Neil Ballard from Lewis Ballard Accountants reminds us that for the self-employed and landlords, hot on the heels of St Nick comes a far less friendly and more Grinch like figure. It’s the taxman and he wants your tax return filed and your tax paid. He’s making a list and he won’t be checking it twice. Miss the 31st January deadline and you’ll be straight on his naughty list. Wait until the new year to look for tax advice and you may find yourself out of luck. Last year almost half of 11.26 million tax returns filed were submitted in January and this year it’s likely to be even more. So hard pressed accountants may very well resemble Charles Dicken’s mild mannered, but over worked clerk, Bob Cratchit or worse still, may be as welcoming to your late requests as old Ebenezer Scrooge himself. You could do it yourself of course, but with no expert advice, if you run into difficulties, you can easily miss out on allowances and end up paying extra tax.

Or you could wait until February for help and face late filing penalties and fines instead. You may even file it on time, but owe more tax than you expected, just when your Christmas credit card bills are due to be paid. Suddenly that wonderful new year is looking anything but. Yet as Neil states ‘It doesn’t have to be that way. Getting your tax affairs sorted now means you can budget for your tax bill and enjoy the season of good will, stress free (over excited children and family rows excluded, of course).’ At Lewis Ballard we’ll ensure you enjoy the festive season, without worrying about unclear tax bills and looming deadlines. After-all, when New Year’s Eve is over, and your hangover is clearing, you’ll want to enjoy a happy and prosperous new year not a frantic scramble to meet submission and payment deadlines.

As Xero platinum members and recent finalists at the Xero National Awards Lewis Ballard have all the expertise you’ll need to become ready for the digital age. So, whether it’s the longterm digital challenge or a short-term tax return issue, just give us a jingle on the phone and we’ll make sure your future stays merry and bright.

“ Neil also recommends that when you’re listing your new year’s resolutions, put ‘keeping my records digitally’ at the top.”

Neil also recommends that when you’re listing your new year’s resolutions, put ‘keeping my records digitally’ at the top. Making tax digital for Personal Tax may have been put on hold until 2020, but the need to submit VAT and Corporation Tax digitally is coming much sooner and these changes can’t be ignored. Quarterly submissions will soon be reality and all businesses will need to embrace this digital challenge and leave the hand-written ledgers to Ebenezer and Bob. 50

It’s been a year of culinary excellence for The Humble Onion and, true to its name, there is nothing more humble than its owner and Head Chef, Antonio Simone.

THE HUMBLE ONION

Antonio wanted to bring his recipe of fine food and exceptional service to the cosy, community town of Dinas Powys near Penarth and, for locals and the many Humble Onion fans travelling from further afield, he’s been proved right. Antonio is no newbie to the pressures of the kitchen having worked as a chef for fourteen years - including a period at the award winning Bully’s Restaurant in Pontcanna. Antonio set about setting up The Humble Onion after discovering the perfect location - he then needed to assemble the very best staff, many joining him from some of Cardiff ’s highest regarded establishments. Soon the Humble team was born, ready and waiting to share their food innovations with Cardiff and The Vale.

“ Unpretentious dishes with exceptional flavours.”

Found in the shrubbery-surrounded, court-yarded coach house at the rear of the Star Inn, The Humble Onion only uses the very best in-season produce. With the monthly change of produce comes an ever evolving menu that adjusts to match which fresh produce are currently in season, ensuring exciting options with the very best flavours all year around. Influenced by the very best French and British cuisine, and by using classical preparation methods, The Humble Onion prepares unpretentious dishes with exceptional flavours. With the holiday season upon us, The Humble Onion offer to take the stress out of the season with a dedicated Christmas Party Menu, specifically designed to treat your taste buds this Christmas - at the extremely reasonable price of £35 for three courses of chefd’œuvre that will tantalise all tastes and preferences. 56

PROUD SPONSORS OF CARDIFF BLUES

Robertsons Solicitors have been based in Cardiff for over 100 years. During that time the team has grown both in size and breadth of expertise. With so many changes across the years, one thing that has remained steadfast is Robertson’s commitment to its core values. Those of service, expertise and community.

ROBERTSONS SOLICITORS VALUES WITH FAMILY LAW AT HEART

It’s these values that really epitomise the firm’s commitment to Family Law. Matters of Family Law inevitably bring with them high levels of emotion. Sometimes these emotions are joyous, and frequently, these emotions can be painful and raw. Robertsons’ vast experience in Family Law enables its team to empathise in any situation, provide the best possible legal course of action and, deliver the best possible outcome for its clients. Director Ian Williams who heads up the Family Law team is proud of his firm’s track record. “What sets my team apart is that our values hold steadfast in everything we do. In matters of Family Law, perhaps more than any other area, this is crucial for our clients. We’ve lived through the pain of divorce, separation, domestic abuse, child guardianship and adoption with them. We’ve learnt how these situations affect everyone involved and so from the outset, we’re perfectly placed to work with a clear focus on the best outcome we can deliver.”

Ian is also keen to remind us that there are many instances of Family Law that are cause for celebration. “It’s not all doom and gloom,” he said, “we work with young couples just starting on their lives together with a co-habitation agreement. Or a lovely one is a Change of Name Deed, when a couple marry and incorporate their shared children into the family name via such a deed.” he continued. Robertsons are based in the centre of Cardiff on prestigious Park Place. Just 10 minutes from Cardiff ’s Queen Street station, they offer an initial consultation free of charge to all firsttime clients. The firm holds the Law Society’s Children’s Law Accreditation, which covers all manner of Children’s Law. Accredited firms, such as Robertsons, have demonstrated to the Law Society that they have and are able to maintain knowledge, skills, experience to a high standard in the areas of children law and the representation of children. 59

Add to this values that focus on a first-class service, continued expertise in all matters of law and support for local community as well as it possibly can, Robertsons is firmly positioned as Cardiff ’s premier Family Law firm. Cowbridge is renowned for its quality eating establishments. For those seeking home-cooked food, expertly served, in a building bursting with rustic charm, twinkly lights and a roaring fire, one name is often on everyone’s taste buds…

THE PENNY FARTHING

Walk through the double doors and you’re greeted with a dessert cabinet that never ceases to elicit rapturous oohs and aahs. We caught up with dessert chef Abi Condon to find out more. How long have you worked at The Penny Farthing? Three years. I started front of house as a waitress/barista. I enjoyed the creative element of making drinks with various motifs but I really wanted to become the house pastry chef. I worked alongside the previous pastry chef Alex, who had eight years’ experience and spent time learning and refining my skills with a previous employee who had been there twenty-five years.

“There’s a history of baking in the family.”

Where did your love of baking come from? There’s a history of baking in the family - my mum made cakes for special occasions such as weddings and anniversaries, and it was helping her that ignited my passion. I still use my grandmother’s recipe for Victoria sponge which was award-winning. I always felt I had the makings of a talented pastry chef, so I relished the opportunity to develop my skills. My aunt had a business based at home that catered for parties and my grandmother entered her creations into local competitions. Describe your day at The Penny Farthing… My day starts at 5.30am, which is just as well as I am a morning person! I come in at this hour to ensure I have sole use of the kitchen and to make 60

sure that all the desserts are freshly prepared and ready for when the doors open at 8.30am. Due to their popularity, preparing meringues for the pavlovas is usually my first job. We offer three different varieties - the demand for them is high. I make sure the cake counter is fully stocked and presented well. I then set about the preparation for our sponges, quiches and Glamorgan sausages. We also get afternoon tea bookings, which I need to factor into my day’s preparation, as well as making sure any off-site sales are catered for. What are the most popular desserts? Salted caramel cheese cake and raspberry and hazelnut pavlova are by far our most popular. Salted caramel is a very en-vogue flavour now and the pavlova has traditionally been our top seller, probably due to its very generous proportions!

The Afternoon Teas are very popular, what is included? Afternoon tea includes a selection of home-made desserts such as our very popular carrot cake, almond slice, scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, macaroons and vegan chocolate brownie cake. All accompanied by hand-cut bloomer sandwich selection, tea or coffee with prosecco as an optional extra - all for a very reasonable £12.95. What makes the Penny Farthing Afternoon Tea stand out from the crowd? I think the fact that we use the highest quality ingredients and, whenever possible, they are locally sourced. They are home-made and freshly prepared on a daily basis, with no need to book, available Monday to Friday from 2.30pm, and Saturday from 3pm.

We always try to cater for customers with special dietary requirements, such as the gluten free desserts and the vegan chocolate brownie cake. We have an extensive range of desserts on offer so there is always something to satisfy the most discerning of tastes. Our 100% Fairtrade and organic certified coffee is also a firm favourite. Are you working on any new recipes for the winter? I am currently developing a new recipe for mulled cherry pie for the festive season and a new twist on an orange and apple fragipan. I am also toying with a mince pie with a meringue topping.

“Salted caramel cheese cake and raspberry and hazelnut pavlova are by far our most popular.” 61
