Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper City Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.
Our cover star this issue is Vale Veterinary Centre. We were already featuring the Pontcanna branch, but the skills of their talented team were brought sharply into focus when our Jack Russell (and office dog) Lucy was mauled by an Alsatian while out walking. We rushed her to VVC in Barry and Simona and her team performed an emergency operation to save her life. So Mark and I are eternally thankful to them. Read all about this brilliant veterinary practice on page 14-15.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! City Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Cardiff and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.
Welcome to the winter edition of City Life. This is something of a celebratory issue for us as we head into 2019. And change is definitely in the air…

Holidaying abroad is all very well but we have some stunning hotels right here in Wales. A beautiful example is Bodysgallen Hall Hotel and Spa in north Wales. A National Trust owned, seventeenth Century, Grade 1 listed building, which enjoys spectacular views of Snowdonia.
BODYSGALLAN H ALL Location, location, location This stunning property is located just two miles from the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno, and one mile from Llandudno Junction railway station, and is approached by a winding drive through meadows and parkland.
History The house has been skilfully and sympathetically restored by Historic House Hotels Limited since 1980 and given to the National Trust in 2008. Bodysgallen is believed to have begun life as a watchtower for Conwy Castle, probably in the thirteenth century, to warn of surprise attack. It was not until late in the Elizabethan era, when it was owned by Richard Mostyn, who served as High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire, that it became a house. Through marriage this passed to the Wynn family and a tablet can be seen on the south-west gable bearing the initials of Robert and his wife Katherine Wynn “1620 R:W:K”.
The accommodation The house features thirty-one spacious bedrooms split between the house and cottage suites. Each of the bedrooms has been individually furnished in a traditional style and decorated with antique furniture and works of art. The rooms enjoy glorious views over Bodysgallen’s 200 acres of parkland and gardens. Several cottage suites benefit from their own private gardens. What about the food? The Dining Room in the Main Hall, awarded three AA Rosettes, overlooks the gardens and is the perfect setting for enjoying the imaginative menus created by Head Chef John Williams. John is a Master Chef of Great Britain, and has been awarded a fellowship. There are only thirty or so members in the UK and this title is only given to craftsmen who have held a Michelin star and three AA Rosettes for ten years or more.
“The house has been skilfully and sympathetically restored.” 6
And when you’re not eating and drinking? Beautifully housed within a converted stone farmhouse in the award-winning historic grounds, Bodysgallen Spa includes a large indoor swimming pool, steam room, sauna and gym. There is a tranquil relaxation room and sun terrace for warmer days. If you would like to venture outside of the hotel, then we would strongly suggest a trip to the nearby town of Llandudno. This perfectly preserved Victorian seaside resort is enclosed by the headlands of the Great Orme and Little Orme.
You could take a ride up the Great Orme by cable railway or cabin lift to capture the views. Or enjoy a stroll along the promenade and pier and stop by the many shops along the way (it’s quite a long pier!). The town has two award-winning beaches, the quieter West Shore with its spectacular views and the lively North Shore (this is the one with the pier).
The town is governed by the Mostyn family and, as a result, the facades are only to be painted in certain colours; no garish colours here. There is a good smattering of independent businesses, cafés and restaurants to while away a leisurely morning or afternoon. Overall thoughts… If you’re looking for modern minimalist, then this isn’t the place for you. But if you’re looking for an exceptional country house experience, then you’ll have chosen well. The rooms are spotlessly clean, and quirky, given its heritage. The food is exemplary. The spa has superb facilities. What makes Bodysgallen stand out from the crowd is the attention to detail and customer service from each and every member of staff. Nothing is too much trouble and you are made to feel at home - albeit a 17th Century one.

FUNDRAISING
Rowan loves science, and so she loves the fact that the charity directly supports scientific research to find a cure for Duchenne.”
Rowan raises money Rowan Bailey-Lear, aged ten from Morganstown has raised £130 for Harrison’s Fund, based in Surrey. To raise money Rowan held a brunch at her house for her friends, selling tea, coffee, fruit juice, smoothies, and lots of food including banana bread, Mexican scrambled egg, bagels with cream cheese and salmon, apple muffins, croissants with homemade jam, strawberries, and melon and granola jars. Carrie Lear, Rowan’s mum said: “My best friend was at school with a girl whose daughter was in Harrison’s class in primary school. She shared a post about Harrison’s Fund, and I thought it looked like an excellent charity to support.
Harrison’s Fund was set up in 2012 and funds research into Duchenne - a rare genetic condition which affects all the muscles in the body, causing them to waste away. Harrison’s Fund’s goal is to get as much money as possible into the hands of the world’s best researchers, who are working to find a cure for Duchenne. The charity is currently funding 16 research projects in the US and the UK. Rowan added: “I wanted something to work on and organise over the October half term holiday and I really liked the idea of hosting a brunch as it meant I would get to see some of my friends.
My favourite part of the day was making fresh coffee and toasting the bagels. I hope my money raised helps find a cure for Duchenne and I can’t wait to plan my next event.”

How many of us put up with health problems that stop us living life to the full? Society’s attitude to chronic conditions, and to the ageing process, sends the unspoken message that we should just accept illness and pain as part of life.
A NGHAR AD E VANS
Angharad Evans has heard it all before. Twelve years ago, her busy life as a departmental head in a secondary school changed when she became very ill. She was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder, a potentially fatal illness where your immune system attacks your own body. Medication helped, but the side-effects were brutal. After months of dragging herself into work, using all her free time to rest, she “hit the wall” and took a year off to travel. “I just knew there must be another way,” she tells City Life. Once she got home, she visited a holistic therapist, whose tests revealed that her body was infected by parasites including Lyme disease and toxoplasmosis. Scary stuff – but Angharad learned that her health problems could be cured through diet and lifestyle changes. “I walked into that treatment room with what I feared was an incurable disease, and I walked out knowing I could get better.”
Although a full recovery took years, it started with that moment. She was inspired by the experience to quit her high-flying job and retrain as an allergy therapist and nutritional therapist. The philosophy that drives Angharad is that many of the health problems we write off as incurable can be helped if you take the time to investigate the cause. Her first session with a new client lasts two hours, so she can explore their medical history and lifestyle in depth before testing for pathogens. “It’s like peeling an onion – you identify what’s causing a symptom, but then you need to investigate the cause itself.” For example, a runny nose might be caused by an allergy, but rather than recommending antihistamines, Angharad would explore why the allergy developed. You leave with a “prescription” of significant dietary and lifestyle changes. “It’s not a quick fix. You’ve got to be prepared to make long-term changes to the way you live.” The hard work pays off. Angharad’s website (angharadevans.cymru) 9
shares glowing testimonials from people who’ve found the treatment life-changing. She helps people with all sorts of long-term conditions: IBS, gallstones, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, psoriasis, allergies, Fibromyalgia, unexplained aches and pains, a many more The idea that most health issues can be fixed through diet and lifestyle is pretty radical – but the results speak for themselves. Angharad’s challenge is: once you realise you have more control over your health than you think, are you ready to get better?

There are restaurants that survive and thrive because they adapt to the changing times and because their reputation serves them well. The Beech Tree, on Old Port Road near Culverhouse Cross is an excellent example.
THE BEECH TREE
Now under new management, new owner Amir Baig’s philosophy is “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” and he’s absolutely right. Over a cup of very good coffee, City Life learned about the reason for its continued success and Amir’s exciting, plans for its future. Congratulations on the takeover Thank you. I’m so excited to now own the restaurant. It’s achieved such a good reputation over the years (previous diners might remember it as Gilby’s) that when it became available, I jumped at the chance of owning it. Our family live in Wenvoe and we had been long standing customers for many years, so it was a no-brainer!
“We currently have six chefs in the brigade.”
What’s your background? I’ve worked in the catering industry for a number of years having owned restaurants before. My passion is not only offering great food but offering even better service. People buy from people so employing the right staff in any restaurant is crucial. Luckily, the existing team are very accomplished and have been retained. So, it’s a happy ship. What changes have you made? So far changes have been minimal as the business worked perfectly fine the way it was. However, we have put in a new floor in the restaurant which gives it a bit more of a modern, contemporary feel. Guests are also welcome to enjoy a drink in the bar which didn’t happen previously and children are also welcome. So, it’s a much more inclusive environment. 10
How many are in your brigade? We currently have six chefs in the brigade. What is the style of the cuisine? We are a brasserie style restaurant. Our fish and meat are on display for customers to choose from. Where do you source your produce? We only serve the finest produce and like to source locally wherever possible. For instance, we buy our meat from Barratts fine meats in Rhoose and our fish from Ashton’s Fishmongers. Our fish is delivered fresh every morning. Our fruit and veg comes from Arthur David and Company and W R Bishop and Company, both known for their high-quality produce.
What about your wines? We are very proud of our wine list and source all of our wines from ND John in Swansea.
“We only serve the finest produce and like to source locally wherever possible.”
When are you open? We are open for lunch and dinner – As well as our a’la carte menu we also offer a 2 course lunch menu for £15.95. We also offer an early bird menu from 5.30pm-7pm.
The Beech Tree Old Port Road, Wenvoe Cardiff CF5 6XN 029 2059 3106 contact@the-beech-tree.com www.the-beech-tree.com
What about Sunday lunch? Ah yes. We are quite famous for our Sunday lunches. Our roast sirloin beef is £15.95 and depending on whether lamb or pork are on the menu, these are £14.95. We do recommend booking though.
Tuesday to Saturday 12 noon - 2pm, 5.30pm - 9pm Bar open till late Sunday 12 noon - 3.45pm Closed Monday 11
BROGUE DOES BEAUJOLAIS IV This is the fourth event organised by dynamic duo, Chris Macnamara of The Brogue Trader and Spiro Borg of Cornerstone (and Spiro’s fine dining caterers).
This year’s beneficiaries of Brogue Does Beaujolais IV are City Hospice based in Whitchurch and the cardiac ward at UHW (Heath Hospital) Cardiff, as we go to press over £33,500 has been raised. Chris Macnamara said, “It’s been a phenomenal event this year. Our little team has pulled out all the stops and we’ve raised a lot more than we thought we would , so we are absolutely delighted.” Such is the popularity of Brogue Does Beaujolais, it attracts many celebrities from the sporting community and huge support from the great and good of the business communities of Cardiff and south Wales. If you were fortunate to have purchased a ticket this year (as they sell like hot cakes), you would have been rubbing shoulders with the likes of footballer Ian Rush, rugby players including Rhys Williams, boxer Nicky Piper, and the ‘very, very charming’ Rupert Moon.
“Our little Beaujolais celebration is becoming extremely popular in Cardiff and, being invitation only, one of the most sought after events on the capital’s social calendar.” The event is funpacked from the word go. “Beaujolais Day kicked off at midday with a champagne reception. Speeches and acknowledgments followed, then lunch of five wonderful courses with matching wine were served by our talented Cornerstone team,” says co-host Spiro Borg. By all accounts, the food was superb and this year over 170 attended the event which finished at 10pm. A Q&A was followed by acclaimed funny man, Rod Woodward of Royal Variety fame, then Big Macs Wholly Soul Band rocked the rafters into the evening. “All table sales and all the proceeds generated from the live auction and raffle (as in every penny), goes directly to the chosen charities. The day is entirely funded by Spiro and I, the venue, the waiting staff, the food, the table wine, the entertainment and many of the auction prizes we personally 12
donate as we want every pound raised to go to the fantastic causes. The day costs us in excess of £10,000 to put on but it’s worth every penny,” adds Chris. Chris would especially like to thank Laing’s the jewellers for donating £2,000 of jewellery, Russel from for donating a bespoke jackt for the auction, Bryan Gunton for his magical skills and donating an evening in his theatre, Sam Warburton for signing fifteen rugby balls for the raffle and store partners and supporters such as the Welsh Rugby Union, Football Association Wales, Sony and NatWest for purchasing and hosting tables and bringing along some amazing sporting legends. Finally, Chris would like to thank the table hosts, attendees and everyone who bid for the auction prizes. “All our guests should be very proud, they’ve made a massive contribution to the overall success of the event and a huge impact on the chosen charities. We are eternally grateful.” said Chris, “See, #morethanashoeshop!” You can’t argue with that.

Richard Williams opened Vale Veterinary Centre in Barry on the 1st December 2014. This independent practice has earned an enviable reputation for top-of-the-line treatment. Now open in Pontcanna, we had to find out more‌
A NIMAL M AGIC!
Why did you choose to open in Pontcanna? Excellent market with a high proportion of dog and cat owners, and where customer comments indicated a real need. What services can Vale Vets Cardiff offer? The full range of services to support the majority of clinical requirements for domestic small animals; principally dogs and cats, and also exotic pets. Tell us about the state-of-the-art equipment there? Digital radiology, in-house pathology, fully equipped operating theatre, kennels, specialist consulting and theatre trolleys, dental and anaesthetic machines, specialist surgical instrumentation. It has been a considerable investment.
What does being an independent veterinary business mean to you? It is a fundamental philosophy of the company as the growth of corporates is leading to a shrinking group of independents. As an independent practice we offer greater freedom in service and treatment to clients - they prefer consistency and continuity with the vets and nursing staff they visit. It ensures that we deliver the top level of quality in client service for them and, most importantly, for their pets - and all delivered at the most competitive pricing. Tell us about your team at Vale Vets Cardiff. We have a permanent veterinary surgeon in post and Richard, the owner and principal at Barry, consistently runs weekly clinics at Pontcanna and performs a range of operations on site. 14
Our RVN’s deliver the clinical support team and receptionists help to manage and control client throughflow. The team mirrors the successful group built up in Barry and staff are often interchangeable. Are there any specialist services you offer in the Cardiff practice that are not available elsewhere? We offer a 24-hour, 7 day on call service and the link to Barry ensures that treatment at an emergency level is always on hand. This joint and flexible approach ensures that procedures can be performed at both centres and that special services, such as the unique laser equipment based at Barry, can be drafted in to support Pontcanna clients and vice versa. The management systems at both practices are linked and this facilitates access to patient notes and continuity of care and treatment.
What makes Vale Vets Cardiff special? We believe we have a great team - that we are independent and deliver a highquality service that has been recognised by numerous awards annually since opening Barry, and Pontcanna has followed on this tradition. Richard underlines this with his recognition as Petplan Vet of the Year in 2016. Our team pride themselves on standards of care and a friendly approach.
“As an independent practice we offer greater freedom in service and treatment. The Practice has grown consistently over the last six months since opening and clients are commenting on the standards delivered and the range of access to clinical equipment and expertise that is facilitated by the relationship between Pontcanna and Barry.
The friendly nature of Barry has set the scene for a standard that has continued in Pontcanna - standards reflected in client reactions and patient outcomes. Vale Veterinary Centres will continue to be independent and place their clients and their pets to the fore. 15

Hands up who has items of clothing in their wardrobe that you haven’t worn? Maybe it’s because you’ve lost or put on weight or simply that you just don’t feel right in them. Chances are that it’s not you, it’s that they don’t fit you properly.
CUT FOR SUCCESS
It was with this in mind that I took a big Lidl bag (other supermarkets are available) full of unworn to Glamorgan Tailoring in High Street Arcade hoping for owner Serena Hobson and her team to work her magic. A tailor will make your clothes look better because no one else in the world has a body exactly like yours. Those celebrities and well-dressed people you see wearing clothes with confidence – they went to a tailor. It’s kind of a secret weapon in stylish person’s arsenal. So, what can be achieved? I ask Serena. “My team and I offer basic repairs/ adjustments, hemming, cuffing, shortening (sleeves, pants, etc.), zippers replaced, add a hidden popper for blouses and taking in. All of these services, and more, can be done on any garment or item.” Says Serena. We go through my many items (trousers, jackets and skirts) and am impressed at the way Serena tells me how she’s going to adjust each piece.
Arms of jackets need shortening and, as I have a little waist, trousers and skirts need taking in. Not every waistband is made equally she tells me. “This one will have to be taken off completely and then taken in at the sides so as not to distort the A-line and lose the pocket positioning.” She says. Wow, that’s going the extra mile! Glamorgan Tailoring is located above Perfection Bridal so Serena is perfectly positioned. The brides simply take their dresses to her for any alterations needed. Glamorgan Tailoring also offer a dry cleaning service. A couple of weeks later, I pop back to pick up my newly altered clothes. I try them on at home and am delighted at how good they now look. It’s like having a new wardrobe of clothes to wear! A good tailor is like a good hair stylist. Once you find one you never want to let him or her go. I certainly know 18
where I’m going when I need things tailored. Go through your closet. Maybe something you had given up on just needed a little alteration love. Give Serena or one of her team at Glamorgan Tailoring a call. Happy tailoring!

In its 125 year history, Cae Court has been many things; a residential home, surgery and home to a doctor and his family, the town register office and a probation office. The latest incarnation for this beautiful Grade II Listed building in the heart of Bridgend is something altogether a more glamorous hotel, restaurant and bar.
CAE COURT
Cae Court is a beautiful boutique hotel and restaurant in the heart of Bridgend. The town has some beautiful old buildings and Cae Court, a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture, is certainly one of them. So, its transformation into a gorgeous boutique hotel and restaurant, is not only most welcome, it seems the logical progression for this stunning building. Cae Court’s design evolution is completely contemporary. Its eight beautifully decorated rooms were designed by London interior designers Patrick Jaeger Associates and the attention to detail is unsurpassed. Guests can luxuriate in the spa-esque bathrooms and envelope themselves in 100% Egyptian cotton bed linen.
The thought of sinking into a 6ft Robert Langford Monarch mattress under a White Company duvet with a choice of feather or microfibre pillows to top it off sounds extremely inviting. If that doesn’t guarantee us a perfect night’s sleep, I’m not sure what would! The hotel’s two Deluxe rooms boast restful views of St. Mary’s Church, Nolton and all rooms are accessible by passenger lift and offer air conditioning, underfloor heating, Wi-Fi and room service. A disabled-friendly room is also available. Overlooking the River Ogmore, and towards Newcastle Church, the restaurant is a stunning, contemporary, 40 cover contemporary dining space.
The proprietors, who also own and run the Harbour Bar and Kitchen and Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl, are clearly proud of the restaurant: “We want people to come and sample our menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner and private functions, or simply call in for a cocktail, and enjoy our exquisite surroundings and exemplary service. We’re confident that we will meet even the most discerning expectations. Our head chef, Barnaby Hibbert joined Cae Court with a background in fine dining and brings to the table an extraordinary talent for fusing flavours and techniques from his extensive repertoire.”
“We’re confident that we will meet even the most discerning expectations.” 20
Cae Court are passionate about working with local suppliers. The hotel sources the finest ingredients and grows many of its own herbs and, we are reliably informed, that the traditional Sunday Lunch is very special, so we’re really looking forward to trying what's on offer. A children’s menu is also available.

Adjoining the restaurant is the newly revamped Cae Court Lounge bar. A truly relaxing space for pre or post dinner drinks or cocktails. It is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day or just relaxing with friends. The proprietors are confident that Cae Court will become not only popular with locals from Bridgend, The Vale of Glamorgan and south Wales, but also a destination hotel for tourists across the
UK and beyond – a stunning base from which to explore our beautiful local and enjoy the rich culture, creativity and breathtaking countryside and coastline this part of Wales has to offer. 21
Following his excellent solo show at MADE in Roath, Martin Briggs has topped off his artistic year with an excellent showcase of larger works at Sustainable Studios in Cardiff Bay.
SUSTAINABLE A RT
City Life popped in to view the collection and chat to visitors, friends and buyers. We asked Martin how and why he started painting… “Three years ago, finishing work, I decided I would take up a life-long interest and hobby and become a full time artist. I got a studio and started painting. I joined a print studio and started silk screen printing. I started to build a new social world amongst artists and galleries. I started taking part in exhibitions. I set up an archival web site and posted in social media. “A year ago I focussed my painting on landscapes with the idea of putting on a solo exhibition. My approach was exploratory, developmental, but working towards creating an identifiable style, finding my voice. My networking led to not one, but two, solo shows, with some fifty or so new paintings. 22
So now I am an artist, taking stock and trying to figure out what to do next.” CRITICAL AC CLAI M
What people think of Martin’s work… The new exhibition by Martin Briggs, located at Sustainable Studios, features some of his larger pieces. What’s great about Martin’s work is that it is a reflection of his varied life - he travels a lot, and always takes his sketchpad, so what the viewers get is an insight into his own experiences. When we visited the exhibition, he read us excerpts from his journal, in which he describes his day: somehow this increases the intimacy of the work, as we have a blow-by-blow (or stroke by stroke) account of its creation, even including “Going for lunch now… had enough for today”. Jim
Martin’s most recent exhibition has immediate impact. The subject matter is interpreted with bold colours and composition, resulting in a show which amply fills the vast exhibition space. The paintings differ markedly in terms of the application and density of paint and perspective on the subject, making for a varied showcase of his work. It is also a testament to a prolific artist unashamedly open regarding the ongoing development of his work as well as the influences from which he draws. Sue Very satisfying and comforting - a lot to do with the colour. Jenny Martin Briggs is one of Cardiff ’s artist hidden gems. I predict his work will become very collectable in years to come. As a lover of his big, bold works, I’m investing now while it’s affordable. Marc 23

With a passion for street and documentary photography, Paul John Roberts and has trained with the best, so it’s no surprise he’s making his mark in the photography world.
EXPOSURE
Tell us a little about your background... I’m Cardiff born and bred and raised by my Mum and Grandmother in a strict Roman Catholic household. I went to St Illtyd’s High School which at the time was all boys and run by the Illtydian brothers who liked to enforce discipline with a cane. I’m a proud father of three, a reluctant empty nester and currently live in the Vale of Glamorgan. When did you first become interested in photography? As a teenager in the late seventies I was inspired by my photojournalist uncle from London who was an innovative photographer of F1 cars - his pal was Sterling Moss and they devised early ways of attaching cameras to cars to get certain shots. He always showed an interest in my education and wellbeing. I started going to Llanover Hall Arts centre (which still exists) in Canton, Cardiff and they had really good photography teachers, Terry Dimmick and Steve Benbow. I started shooting around the streets with the cheapest plastic camera and learnt how to develop the black and white film I’d shot with it and make prints in the darkroom.
Is photography your occupation or a hobby? Photography has always been a passion for me. I’ve never, until now, been a professional and have always enjoyed it not having to think about satisfying a client. The time came, a year ago, when my youngest child left the home to go to Uni. I knew when this point came in my life that it would be a time for reflection and, on reflection, I returned to my teenage passion of photography. Coincidently I was offered a small redundancy package around this time and so some of the redundancy money I used to train with the Magnum Photo Agency in Paris for the last year. I worked with and trained with some of the great names in photography in this enriching period. Now I find myself being a professional photographer and enjoying the experience immensely. What work do you enjoy doing most of all? I enjoy documentary photography as it can cover such a wide array of subjects and deals with real people, situations and their stories. Some examples of the variety of subjects I’ve dealt with in the last year are: 24
Vaydum This is the name of an office block in Paris squatted by some ‘black bloc’ anarchists who house asylum seekers there. I found out about a boxing gala they had arranged and went along. I managed to get the beginnings of a story there but it was towards the end of my time in Paris and I had to return to Wales to help re-establish my mum back into normal life after spending six months in hospital. This type of story takes a long time to build as it is a very sensitive situation and time is the only way to build trust. Shibari Another sensitive subject I dealt with in Paris was rope bondage. There was an organisation called ‘Place des Cordes’ (now closed) where they taught and practiced the Japanese art of Shibari. I chose this subject as a referral from one of my teachers. I wanted to get an understanding of why they did it. You’d think initially that it was about sex but in the six months I visited them, getting to know the characters, I never once saw any sexual activity and learnt that it was about many other things as well as being intimate.
Sepsis Once back in Wales I was invited to photograph a commemorative football match for Shane Wadsworth, a 29 year old father of two that died of sepsis. The Sepsis Trust are attempting to drive the awareness of this little known blood disorder as it can be curable if caught early enough. By photographing the families and telling their stories it is hoped that awareness will increase.
Looking for the theatre in the mundane, looking for drama in the dark shadows and bright highlights of a winter’s sunset brings a much different experience of a place and its people.
go-to lens, then my 70-200mm f2.8, my 35mm f1.8 and on occasion my 20mm f1.8. I like using off camera flash particularly for street photography, I think it’s a great effect.
Your website is full of quite exotic places - do you travel a lot with your photography work? I’m actually really under travelled and intend to rectify that.
On a lighter note I enjoy photographing behind the scenes on video and film productions. Recently I shot stills for a music video filmed in South Wales for James Yorkston (a Scottish folk singer). It went from the sublime to the ridiculous and was such fun.
Which photographers do you admire? There are so many great photographers. As a teenager some of my heroes were Henri Cartier Bresson who was like Federer is (I like tennis too). The excitement of war as a teenager caught my imagination in the form of Don McCullin and his brilliant attitude towards life. I love the work of Martin Parr for his satirical and anthropological look at life. Sebastião Salgado is an immense photographer who looks at humanity in a unique way and his images have biblical proportions.
What advice would you give someone starting out or who wanted a career in photography? That is hard, as everyone is different and have different roads to travel. David Hurn said to me once “become an expert in something and then use photography to illustrate your point of view”.
I’ve learnt to enjoy the bonding process of photographing portraits. I never thought I’d enjoy this “set up situation” as I’ve always looked for the spontaneous, unique moment, the ‘Decisive Moment’ as one of Henri Cartier Bresson’s books was called. I think portraits can be another good way of telling a person’s story. And my go-to genre is street photography. You have different eyes in when doing street photography.
Do you have a favourite shot? Of mine? No. What equipment do you use? I use two Nikon D750 bodies. My lenses start with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 as my 25

SAVING LIVES IN STYLE
This year, there was a second RNLI dress designed and made by Georgina-Grace Smith and her mum Angie Smith, worn by Mia Francis plus a second outfit designed and made by Elissa Mancusso - a onepiece navy swim suit with an RNLI puffa jacket worn by both Lucy Flynn and Lauren King. There were additions to last year’s events, including a Fashion Show with Afternoon Tea at Holm House Hotel with Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Peacocks, plus many others. The RNLI would like to thank the many local independent businesses, local schools, C3i Group and Events@ room11 for their involvement in this year’s Festival.
City Life were once again proud to be sole media sponsors for the event and would personally like to thank Amorio Cosmetics, SOHO Hairdressing, Dawn Clinic, Ener-chi Organics, Blu Hair Design, Wilmore’s 1938 and Refresh Skin Clinic for supporting us and enabling us to showcase the Festival in all its glory in both Vale Life and its sister publication, City Life Cardiff. As we go to print, we are unaware if there will be a Fashion Week next year in Penarth. Watch this space! You can still support the RNLI by visiting their website. I like French food, I can’t deny it. There’s something wholesome about it – especially in the winter months. Winter just seems the perfect season to complement rich, French flavours.
CÔTE BRASSERIE
In our house ‘date night’ as it’s affectionately, and accurately, called comes ‘round usually every Thursday. Sometimes we stay in, sometimes we go out - perhaps to a movie or for a meal. This particular Thursday we fancied a meal so we thought we’d like to pop into ‘town’ (Cardiff never feels like a city on date night somehow). Côte has always been one of our ‘go to’ chain restaurants, probably because it doesn’t feel like one. We’ve been to both Côte’s in Cardiff; the Bay and Mill Lane. But, tonight, it was Mill Lane’s turn, mainly because we wanted to do a little evening shopping beforehand. The interior is really lovely - the lighting, perfect. And, as it says on the tin, they serve regional specialities and traditional classics. 36
To be fair they do it very well. To get the taste buds going we ordered a few drinks (they have an excellent wine list) and some bread that was not only beautiful to look at (gorgeous, glistening olives and anchovies) but tasted divine. Our starters were excellent (Moules Marinieres for my good lady and Prawn Gratinee for me). One thing I would mention is Côte are, in my opinion, generous with their portions so be careful, it’s quite easy to fill up and, perish the thought, not leave room for dessert. The mains were the stars of the show this evening. I chose Cassoulet De Toulouse, a traditional Tarbais been stew with confit duck wing, smoked Toulouse sausage and bacon lardons.
“The mains were the stars of the show this evening. I chose Cassoulet De Toulouse” Full of garlic and packed with flavour and perfect sourdough croutons. If I had the slightest observation, it would be that it was slightly overseasoned. The love of my life topped this (we’re always competing), with one of the most beautiful steaks I’ve ever tasted (I had to try it!) - a 10oz Ribeye cooked to chef ’s ‘medium-rare’ - topped with a peppercorn sauce and tender green beans to the side. It was simply mouth-watering. Desserts were an absolute must despite the robust helpings but we had to indulge. Tarte Fine aux Pommes for me – crisp, puff pastry tart with finely layered apples and vanilla ice-cream. And for my better half? At the waiter’s suggestion, she chose Crème Caramel, and she wasn’t disappointed. It’s something Côte is quite proud of and quite rightly so.
It was velvety and just plain gorgeous. Coffees brought the evening to a close and, as the rain trickled down the window, and the lights and neon glow of Mill Lane’s businesses illuminated the evening shoppers passing by outside, for a moment, just for a moment, we could have been in Paris. C’est la vie! 37

The winter months can seriously take their toll on our skin. City Life talks to skin and laser professional, Suzanne Lazim, of LaserWise to find out more.
L ASERWISE
HOW TO SURVIVE THE WINTER MONTHS
What do you love about what you do? There are many reasons why I love what I do - I love working with the public and meeting new people. I love building a professional relationship with all my clients and seeing them on a regular basis. You learn so much about people in this industry, their personal lives, their experiences and, sometimes, their secrets. I also love the happiness our treatments and customer care gives our clients, these treatments really do change people’s lives, you can’t get much more job satisfaction than that. What treatments are popular at this time of the year? The weather takes a huge toll on people’s skin and it becomes a lot drier than usual, so we find our hydrating facials are very popular during the winter months.
These facials vary person to person as they are tailored to your skin and its needs - we do not carry out the same facial on everyone, and we will always adapt it. Laser is also very popular this time of year as your skin cannot be tanned four weeks before and four weeks after laser treatment, whether it’s from sunbeds or natural sun exposure. The skin also cannot be fake tanned two weeks before laser treatment, including tinted moisturisers, hence why the winter months are always so busy here at LaserWise as people wait for their tans to fade before having treatment. Can you give readers five of your top skin care tips for the cold and dry winter months? Absolutely. Here are my top five… 38
1) EXFO LIATE Remove dead skin to help nourish and hydrate the newer cells underneath. 2) HYD R ATE Drink plenty of water – remember your cells are made up of 95% water. 3) HYALURO N IC AC ID Make sure this is in your skincare to ensure topical hydration. 4) MO IS TUR ISE Use a thicker consistency moisturiser for the winter months to target dry skin. 5) SP F 50 Protect your skin all year around from UVA (aging), UVB (burning), visible light and infra-red light (phones, computers, and florescent lights etc).
You’ve recently expanded your team… Yes! We now have four members of staff at LaserWise; myself, Lauren, Stacey and our newest member of staff, Georgia. I love how the team is growing. We all work so well together, complimenting each other’s strengths. We all have our own unique way of treating our clients, while always ensuring everyone receives the same time, service and quality of treatment.

Kaely Backland of Usk welcomed us into her beautiful home and told us why she chose to work with Alexander James Bifold. How did you hear about Alexander James? I wanted some beautiful bifold doors. I researched online and found the Alexander James Bifolds website. I liked the look of it. It looked very professional and gave me the confidence to give the company a call. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? They came across very professional, both on the phone and when their representative, Andrew, initially came out to talk about their products and service before and after installation. What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They installed a set of bi-folding doors with four doors which open on to the garden. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? I already had PVC bi folding doors which were a substandard product and not fit for purpose. After talking with Andrew from Alexander James, and going with his advice to choose their aluminium product, I couldn’t be happier. The doors are not only a better quality product but, aesthetically, they are more pleasing - especially since I could almost choose any colour I wanted and, finally, the big plus - they actually work! Before I hardly bothered opening the PVC doors but now I use them all the time. I was so pleased with the work from this company that I have been back to fit all new windows throughout the property as well!

WORKING O N WORK FIVE STARTING POINTS FROM
LEWIS BALLARD We all want to be better, even those on top of their game should aim to improve. Dan le Sac tells us, ‘If your only goal is always to improve on yourself, then the quest is never over no matter how big your wealth.’ This is true of business too! If you’re not working on bettering your business it isn’t going to improve.
We know you’re working hard, but are you working right? Make time to work on work. Doing daily tasks is important, but it won’t make your business improve. Getting better at doing your daily tasks only gets you better at staying where you are!
1. Change You have to make changes to see changes. Setting a target to be bringing in more high value clients is great, but if you stick to the same process you’ve been following, day-in day-out, you’re going to get exactly the same results you’ve been getting, day-in day-out. A great way to identify where you should be changing your tactics is to ask people who are already doing what you want to do. The worst they can do is not tell you!
2. Commit Change can be hard to enforce, but it can be the most important part. Frequently processes put in place to bring change fall by the wayside. People revert to what they know, but that only keeps everything the same. Nothing can progress if nothing changes. Let’s say your goal is to drive up garlic bread sales and you’ve told everyone to offer it every time.
If you don’t monitor it, things will quickly revert to the previous statusquo. Want to get stuck with a load of garlic bread, or increased sales? Make those changes stick!
3. Goals What are you aiming for? Bettering yourself is great, but you need more specific goals. To become ‘better’ is too broad. What’s the best route to ‘better’? If you decide to get better at workflow management you need to identify how much and by when. Before you know it, you won’t just be working towards ‘better’, you’ll know how much better you really are.
4. Time Want more time? Unfortunately, you can’t have it! There is no more to go around. Instead use what you have more wisely. Is it really only you who can do those routine daily tasks? Is that just vanity? Because to improve your business, you need to prioritise working on work, not just in it.
“You have to make changes to see changes.” 46
5. ‘Better’ So you’ve achieved your goal and now you’re ‘better’. You’ve reached good or even great, but don’t stop there. Super successful companies are always improving, which is why we see new innovation daily from the businesses we want to compete with and, eventually, exceed. They’re working on work right now. Are you? Give us a call and let Lewis Ballard help you identify what your goals should be, and how you can be working on work today.
“So you’ve achieved your goal and now you’re ‘better’. You’ve reached good or even great, but don’t stop there.”

Mum and I love a good mooch around the shops, and the market town of Cowbridge is always a popular choice - but we especially love…
HAPPY DAYS
Walk through the doors of Happy Days Vintage Homestore and you don’t know quite where to look as there’s so much to see. The best way we thought was to go in a clockwise direction, so we didn’t miss anything. It’s known as the biggest destination in town and we could see why. We normally chat as we’re walking around shops but we were both concentrating and taking everything in. It’s packed to the rafters with 30 local small businesses stocking unique items from restored vintage and antique furniture, curios, funky American imported clothing, collectable toys, jewellery and unique handcrafted gifts. Apparently the vinyls from 60s to the 90’s are very popular.
“You could easily spend a morning or afternoon here.”
We may still be in winter, but spring is just around the corner, so the front of the shop will soon have a great range of cast aluminium bistro sets, stone urns and pots and vintage utensils. On our visit, the store was busy; I’m guessing it was because visitors know that the stock changes regularly. It’s also a great place to mooch around if the weather is poor – which is was on our visit. There were a good mix of age groups - lots of people our age but also quite a few younger couples too; obviously looking for those lovingly restored pieces for their future home together. It was time for a cuppa, so we made our way to the tearoom and were greeted by Deb - a very charismatic, fun-loving lady with many a tale to tell! The menu was full of home-cooked comfort food – think corned beef pie and freshly made sandwiches. 49
We fancied something sweet with our coffees but it was a tough choice between the moreish looking scones, home-made cake, tart or crumble. We opted for a scone and lemon drizzle cake - both delicious! You could easily spend a morning or afternoon here but I warn you, it could become addictive.

Linc Cymru (Linc) organised the event to raise money for their chosen charity, the Jacob Abraham Foundation. The Jacob Abraham Foundation was established by Nicola Abraham in memory of her son Jacob following his death in 2015. Jacob was 24 years old when he took his own life. The glamourous ‘Dapper and Diamonds’ themed Charity Ball, which was sponsored by the Jehu Group, saw 160 guests generously support the charity. The money raised at the Charity Ball will be used by the Jacob Abraham Foundation to build a framework of support for those affected by suicide.
