WALES’ PREMIER INDEPENDENT BUSINES S MAGAZINE

INBUSINESS Group Managing Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@goodlifepublishing.co.uk InBusiness Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW www.inbusinessmag.co.uk 0845 180 2345 Passionate about Wales We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. InBusiness magazine is written, designed and printed in Wales for the people of Wales. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore InBusiness magazine cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in InBusiness magazine or on www.inbusinessmag.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. WELCOME Business, like life, is full of challenges. Part of what makes business people special is our ability to bounce back; to take the knocks but, occasionally, we get sideswiped with some really tough news… A good friend to InBusiness, Joan Reen, passed away earlier in the year. Joan was a truly lovely person, a talented hotelier and co-owner of the beautiful Ynyshir Hall near Machynlleth. Peter Da Silva, friend and business associate, pays tribute to Joan on pages 22 and 23. Our cover image this issue is steel. The hot topics we discuss in our feature on pages 36 to 39 have been discussed constantly recently; will Port Talbot steel continue and whether we should be in or out of Europe? Steel’s future in Wales is up in the air but as for Brexit or Bremain, I hear more business people saying leave than remain - perhaps it’s the company I keep. The outcome of the election will be interesting if nothing else. Pocket a profit! On page 16 we look at the trend for pocket watches. Pocket watches are not only extremely stylish but are turning into reasonably good investments. In our Pocket A Profit feature, we talk to Jack Cohen of David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff ’s Royal Arcade. Unsafe & Insecure Cyber Security is another hot topic at the moment with many businesses being hacked or compromised in some way or other. Even if you haven’t been, you’ll be under attack every day in one way or another. On page 26 CIT Cyber Security guru Chris Benson gives us an insight into the dark world of cyber security and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Joan Reen

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Cardiff ’s resident Mad Man, Robert Petersen of Petersens (advertising and PR) talks about the ever changing world of advertising on page 44. With the advent of social media, things have changed a lot, which brings us neatly to… The Twitterati… On page 46, Ellie Philpotts, our Twitter expert, looks at some of the region’s best Tweeters and gives us a few tips on how business can get the best out of Twitter. Check out our Movers & Shakers section on page 62 - who knows, you may see yourself there! I hope you’ll enjoy reading this latest issue of InBusiness as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. It’s been a strange start to the year, especially if you’re in retail. The mild winter left far too many coats and winter wear on the rails. Food and hospitality seems to be riding a crest of a wave too - lots of new great eateries opening. Whatever business you’re in, we hope spring and summer will be kind to you.

South Wales law firm signs Lithuanian deal to recover €2 million South Wales-based CJCH Solicitors are teaming up with the European Law Firm of the Year to track down Lithuanian citizens in the UK and recover up to €2 million which courts have ordered them to pay. Fast-growing CJCH, whose headquarters are in Cardiff, has signed a contract with Lithuanian firm Sorainen, recently named European Law Firm of the Year in The Lawyer European Awards, to jointly represent the interests of one of their Lithuanian clients to trace and identify the whereabouts and assets of up to 200 Lithuanian individuals in the UK.

CJCH, who also have offices in Barry and Bridgend, will use their specialist asset recovery and enforcement team to investigate each claim and identify the whereabouts of the individual against whom a Lithuanian court has already made judgement. They will then proceed through the UK courts system to enforce the court’s ruling and recover assets. “This is a fantastic endorsement of our expertise in this field,” said CJCH Solicitors senior partner Stephen Clarke. “Sorainen approached us to work with them on this because of our reputation, which is a real credit to our staff. “It is a three-year contract and we anticipate the total amount of recovery could exceed €2 million.”

6

The tie-up with Sorainen is the latest extension of CJCH’s rapidly developing international business, which involves them working in partnership with many other international law firms across Europe, Asia and North America. CJCH Solicitors has grown from 24 employees just over two years ago to more than 90. As well as its Cardiff headquarters, CJCH also has offices in the Canton area of the city, Bridgend and Barry, and has specialist expertise in commercial, intellectual property, mental health, employment law, motoring, property, family, child care, and crime. Further information is available at www.cjch.co.uk.

Millionaire businessman Kevin Green presents £50,000 to HRH The Princess Royal in aid of Carers Trust HRH The Princess Royal was presented with a cheque for £50,000 for Carers Trust at a private dinner hosted by South Wales millionaire businessman Kevin Green. The money raised will help the charity, for which The Princess Royal is president, to support unpaid carers across the UK. Gail Scott-Spicer, CEO of Carers Trust, said: “We had a great evening talking about carers, the support they need and how the money raised will support many unpaid carers who are caring tirelessly around the clock. “Carers Trust would like to say a huge thank you to Her Royal Highness, Kevin Green and everyone involved, for their kind generosity.” Mr Green, 52, hosted the VIP dinner at a private suite in Claridge’s Hotel, London. He said: “I love networking and helping others. The opportunity of combining both interests by organising a private dinner to raise funds for the Carers Trust, such a deserving charity, had massive personal appeal. The support of Carers Trust President, HRH The Princess Royal gave this event a special relevance for all. I’m proud to be a supporter of Carers Trust. I have been interested in the valuable work of the Carers Trust for a number of years.

I only have the time to commit my energies to a handful of worthy charities and Carers Trust is one of them.” “I was delighted to be able to host a dinner at Claridge’s for Carers Trust President, HRH The Princess Royal and our guests, which included members of my international team and representatives of some of the most successful businesses in south Wales. The evening was a great success.

A big thank you goes to all my seminar attendees for their valuable contributions of £23,000, which I topped up with £27,000 to make the donation to Carers Trust. The Princess Royal gave a very illuminating speech on the work of Carers Trust. We were all hugely impressed and happy that the money raised will go to such a wonderful cause. We were all very grateful to the Princess Royal for giving up her time to attend the dinner. I know all my guests appreciated the opportunity to talk to the Princess.”

Daredevils take to the sky! Cardiff’s only 5 star hotel, The St David’s Hotel & Spa, challenged Welsh capital’s adrenaline junkies to take part in a once in a lifetime zip wire event in Cardiff Bay on the 5th and 6th May. The zip wire challenge, which took place over two days, was held in support of Welsh charity, The Princes Gates Trust, the Hotel’s chosen charity partner for 2016. More than 200 people of all ages took to the Welsh skies across the two days to face their fears and fuel their adrenaline. The total amount raised in support of the young peoples’ charity has yet to be determined but is well in excess of £20,000.

Amongst the high-flying daredevils were three Welsh rugby legends; Shane Williams, Ryan Jones and Ian Gough who took part across the two days, as well as St David’s Hotel & Spa General Manager, Graeme Barclay, who was the first to brave the zip wire. Nicola Edmunds, Director of Sales and Revenue at The St David’s Hotel & Spa, said: “We had a lot of fun organising the zip wire event and we’re grateful to everyone who took part to help raise money for this inspirational charity. The spectators were really enthusiastic and the atmosphere was fantastic. The Trust provides constant support and enrichment to the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and their families who suffer from physical disabilities, or who have been affected by life-changing circumstances.

PENARTH

Glass By Design A brand new venture was officially opened by Penarth Mayor Rosemary Cook on Saturday 7th May. The new business has been launched by glass artists, Angelina Hall and Cathy O’Doherty. They snapped up the chance to open their own venture when 1 Station Approach, Penarth was vacated by The Scott Wroe Hearing Centre. “The three huge windows give an incredibly light and airy feel to the shop and are ideal for showing off our stained and fused glass to their very best” said Cathy. They have also scoured South Wales, to find other Welsh Makers who produce beautiful handmade work in mediums such as Slate, Ceramics, Stone, Metal and Paper. These beautiful items are shown alongside the fused and stained glass in the shop area and give a feast for the eyes when entering the shop. At the rear of this space is a workshop area where both artists will be working, producing their creations in full view and it will allow people to see how much work goes in to producing the unique work that is on display. “This will allow people to see that these items are not mass produced. They are handcrafted with skill and creativity and it ensures that our shop looks like no other – Something quite unique these days!” explains Angelina. A state of the art electric kiln has been bought, so that classes in glass fusing, stained glass, glass painting and etching can be taught in a workshop at the rear of the building.

Small classes of up to five people will be taught and a programme of dates are available for May and June. Bookings are now being taken and the classes are filling up nicely. A range of sheet glass, tools and materials are available on site, so that students can start to make their own creations, and an Open Studio will be held every Thursday evening from 6pm – 8.30pm for students, with either Angelina or Cathy on hand for any advice that they might need. “We know that the people of Penarth want their town centre to be a mix of great independent shops, which will attract tourists and visitors from outside the area and give them high quality, unique handmade products. We look forward to welcoming all our new customers and hope we will inspire them so much, that they will want to learn more about glass making and book on some courses too!” Angelina said. 8

A passion for Welsh publishing Introduce yourself… My name is Richard Houdmont and I’m a publisher. I’m a Welsh-speaking Yorkshiremen with a Belgian surname, which explains my identity crisis. Tell us a little about what you do… When my son was five years old, friends in Canada sent him a book as a birthday present. I loved the book so much I bought the Welsh-language rights and then went on to publish, in Welsh, six books by the same author, all originally published in Canada. So my business is all about translating the passion I have for these books and making them available in Welsh, which is my other passion.

Free CPR training and heart screening sessions All Wales Charity Welsh Hearts Calonnau Cymru focus on funding Defibrillators in communities, businesses and schools through-out Wales, holding free CPR training and heart screening sessions to the public! Welsh Hearts have trained over 11,000 people in CPR and have placed 375 defibrillators across communities in Wales. The aim of this is to drastically improve the chances of those that have cardiac arrests outside of hospital where the first few minutes are absolutely crucial in saving their lives. In Wales there are approximately 8000 sudden cardiac arrests outside hospital each year. It’s shocking that the survival rate is only 3%. Where an AED (defibrillator) is used, the survival rate is 50%. Sharon Owen, Charity Director and founder has worked in the charity sector for over 20 years and felt that more needed to be done in Wales to tackle heart disease.

Sharon was also inspired to set up the charity because at the age of eleven during a routine check it was discovered that she had a heart murmur. Although Sharon has been lucky that the murmur has not caused any major health issues, she was thankful that it was detected as it has meant that she has been more aware of the choices she has made in life. Sharon has also lost loved ones to heart disease which also spurred her on. Sharon said: “Too many people here in Wales are losing their lives to heart disease on a daily basis. I also feel extremely sad when I hear that twelve young people lose their lives each week in the UK to an undiagnosed heart condition. This is why Welsh Hearts are fighting for young people to be screened so any heart abnormalities can be detected early enough to save lives. And why communities need all across Wales need to be fully equipped with lifesaving skills and equipment. We have come a long way in a short space of time! Huge thanks to people who have supported us in these two years, including our wonderful Volunteers and the medical community who have supported us voluntarily but we still have a lot to do.”

Accounts are a not only laborious but it’s a minefield. Finding the right accountant for your business can also be, as they say, extremely taxing. Lewis Ballard, based in Cardiff, are an award-winning accountants owned and run by real people who get the job done and leave you to run your business. We chat to owners Neil and Janet Ballard to find out more.

SUMMING UP When was the business established? JANET The business was first established in 1976; Neil joined in 1989 and became a partner in 1992. Lewis Ballard Limited was formed on 1st November 2009 when Neil and I took over the whole business.

Who owns the business? NEIL There are four Directors - Janet and I own 80% (40% each). Sian Lloyd and Johanna Evans own 10% each. How many people do you employ? JANET We employ twenty people at present but are recruiting for more. How many clients do you have? NEIL We have 448 clients. Please outline the services you offer. JANET We offer clients a holistic approach which includes business development advice, business coaching, tax planning, inheritance tax, trusts and wealth management. We help them at every stage from starting a business to their exit strategy, ensuring they maximise results and protect and retain as much of their income as possible throughout. Alongside this we provide routine compliance services such as Accounts, Tax, VAT and Payroll. NEIL At this time of year many people are panicking because their tax affairs aren’t in order, the 31st January deadline is looming and they are facing potential hefty tax bills or late filing penalties. Our advice to anyone worrying about this, whether you’ve been too busy or you’ve forgotten, is there’s still time to organise things, but you do need to act quickly.

Find yourself an accountant who will not only help you now, but won’t let you fall behind again. You must know your tax liabilities and how your business is doing in real-time to capitalise on opportunities or nip any problems in the bud. If all your accountant is concerned about is meeting the tax deadline and avoiding fines, how will you ever know how you are really doing? What type of clients do you work with? JANET We work with small or medium expanding businesses, giving them business and tax advice, growth strategies and structures that allow them to enjoy the success their hard work deserves without sacrificing the life they want. We act for a full range of professions; from surveyors to electricians and restaurants to hairdressers, high net worth individuals and several celebrities (sorry no names)! We find that whatever sector they operate in, business owners often face the same issues running their business and that’s where we can help. Do you have expertise in a particular sector? NEIL Our dental and healthcare clients make up about 40% of our businesses. This specialist knowledge has been developed over thirty years and is embedded in our systems. Through our reputation as healthcare specialists we also have strong links with healthcare specialist bank managers, solicitors, IFAs (independent financial advisors) and many other professionals, which means we have the contacts to help our clients succeed, whatever they need.

What do you think sets Lewis Ballard apart from other accountants? JANET Our approach for our clients differs from many other accountants. For a start, we don’t just give them the numbers; we explain what they mean and how to improve them. Our main focus though is adding value to their business and balance to their lives, by asking them what they want and finding ways to help them achieve it. NEIL If business is great, but they want more family time, we help them to build a business that allows them to do so. If, on the other hand, they are happy with their social time and want to concentrate on building a healthy bank balance, we help them to maximise their profits and if, like many people, it’s a bit of both, we help with that too! JANET We look at six areas of balance; Business Balance - to provide up to date figures, Tax Balance - strategies to minimise tax, Saleable Balance - to build a profitable business to sell, Life Balance - to ensure clients enjoy their success, Personal Financial Balance - to reduce personal debt and build personal wealth and Retirement Balance - to provide enough for a comfortable retirement. We are very conscious that we deal with real people and life changes, so we are flexible and offer what they want and need now and look at what they’ll want and need in 10 or 20 years too. People need different things at different stages, so we tailor our services to fit their needs, however we find the sooner they think about the whole picture the more successful they are across their life.

12

Why are you based in Pentwyn? NEIL We moved to Pentwyn in 2004 when we outgrew our Llandaff offices. It’s ideal for us as it’s so close to the M4 and A48 or all our clients, both local and throughout the UK. and we have onsite parking for our clients and team. We originally had one third of the building but, by 2012, we were bursting at the seams again so we took the plunge and bought the whole unit.

Since taking over fully in November 2009, we have been very focussed on the welfare and training of our team and recently achieved the Investor in People Gold accreditation and ACCA platinum trainer status. We already have a very technical team of qualified Chartered Certified accountants, two Chartered Tax advisors, a Certified Payroll manager, AAT and five part-qualified ACCA accountants to provide expert advice.

We now have lovely new offices, training rooms and meeting rooms for hire and five rental offices too. It has really increased the range of services we can offer, with regular seminars and training to help them grow their business, and wealth and property talks to help them create secure, successful futures.

However we also ensure they are trained as business advisors too, as although it’s important to ensure accuracy in the figures, it’s just as important to know what they mean and where improvements can be made. We aim to have a minimum of ten trained business advisors who will have a huge impact on the local economy by ensuring businesses succeed and prosper. We also aim to train local people and not outsource like many of our competitors as we believe employers have an obligation to put back into their communities.

Where do you see the company in the future? JANET We see our team growing by at least another 50% within the next three years as our clients’ expand and need more support and, also, as we take on new clients looking to dramatically improve their results. We are continually looking to develop the range of services we offer and intend to further expand this. Our team are trained in Kashflow, Xero and Openbooks cloud accounting systems, as we see cloud accounting as the best way to help clients stay up to date and ahead of their competitors and we see more and more clients going this way. Online technology is one of the exciting ways our industry is developing.

Please tell us about your awards… NEIL We are really delighted to have our hard work recognised. We recently submitted several case studies to a national competition organised by AVN and sponsored by Xero, showing the impact we have on our clients lives and, as a result, we are now officially ‘The UK’s Most Inspiring Accountants’ and we also came back from the national accountancy conference as the ‘AVN firm of the year’.

“ We work with clients right across the UK and have many in South and West Wales.” 13

JANET After raising nearly £80,000 for Velindre Cancer hospital in the last 5 years Neil and I are proud to be Velindre Ambassadors and we aim to reach our £100,000 target in 2016, by holding another charity dinner on 5th March 2016 and completing (hopefully) the five day Ride the Rockies cycle challenge in September 2016. NEIL In 2012 we also became the first Welsh business to join B1G1, a global organisation of businesses that support over 600 charities worldwide. We link a different charity to each service we give and every time a client buys we give. It’s great to have such recognition, but what really makes us tick is seeing our clients succeed and our team develop. So many business owners work ridiculous hours with no holidays, just to survive, so when we help them build a business that really works and gives them the life style they deserve, we know we are making a real difference. Successful businesses create jobs and impact on the economy- it’s a win-win that we are proud to be part of and our door is always open to anybody struggling in business and looking to change things - just give us a call and that change can start today.

One of Cardiff ’s long-standing indie favourites, Servini’s, has had a makeover and it’s looking amazingly good. We stopped by to chat with new owner Matt Barker.

SERVINI’S “Top rate in every aspect, food, service and quality.”

Matt, you took over Servini’s last summer; can you tell us a bit about what led to this? My background is in hospitality, I have eighteen years’ experience working for brands such as Malmaison, Hotel du Vin and Mitchell and Butler’s working in high end boutique hotels, luxury five star independent hotels and gastro pubs, and high end steak houses. My wife and I have just had our first child and I was looking for something that could give me a better work life balance and the opportunity to do my own thing. The previous owner, Mel, was looking to retire, and I saw a great opportunity to take over a wellestablished business with lots of potential.

You’ve made some major changes since taking over the business, can you tell us about those? I felt it was in need of updating in terms of style and décor, and so this was my chance to put my mark on it. Major is the word; we’ve put in a new floor, new celling, new walls, we have a brand new kitchen, a new guest toilet, and we’ve reworked the available space to provide more comfortable seating for guests both inside and out. Can you tell us about your menu? We offer great value, home-cooked food seven days a week. Our most popular items are our all day breakfasts, and the latest addition to the menu - our traditional Sunday roasts which are proving very popular. We offer gluten free and vegetarian dishes so there’s something 14

for everyone. We make our own cakes, including our famous Welsh cakes which are baked daily. Also, we’re fully licensed; we offer a good selection of bottled beers, cider, wines and cocktails, as well as some home-made soft drinks, teas and coffees. Our full menu can be found on our website www.serviniscardiff.co.uk We’ve heard about Servini’s legendary Welsh Cakes - is it correct that you bake different flavours? Yes, since taking over we’ve added some more flavours to our original cherry Welsh cakes, we now bake them with currants, and jam - they all sell very well, and very quickly! The smell of the Welsh cakes baking is fantastic and, with our open kitchen, customers love to look and see if they can figure out our secret recipe.

“Love this place. Went there today and found that it was under new ownership and it turns out it’s even better.”

Please tell us about your popular call and collect service... Absolutely, this has always been a key part of the business and we want to keep it as simple as possible for our customers; so give us a call, place your order and let us know when you want to pick your order up and we’ll do the rest. Our menu has some very competitively priced take away offers a bacon or sausage roll for £3; and for lunch, any Ciabatta, packet of crisps and a can of drink for £5. Of course any orders can be customised to suit.

We must confess our love of coffee, what brand do you use? As coffee lovers ourselves we wanted a high quality coffee, without the high import price tag. We were very fortunate to find Verde coffee, a family run local business offering their own roasted beans. Do you have any plans for the future? We would like to increase our hours by opening later in the evenings, but this is something for a little further down the line. At the moment Sundays are our big focus but watch this space as they say. So, go and check out the refurbishment (and the Sunday roasts and Welsh cakes) and remember to tell Matt and his team that we sent you. 15

And, if you’re looking for something to do with the children during the Easter holidays, a little bird tells us there’ll be plenty of treats in store at Servini’s, including decorating your own gingerbread man, home-baked hot cross buns and, of course, lots of chocolate.

The rise of the hipster has, arguably, had an impact on the resurgence of pocket watches as a fashion accessory. The ‘smart man’ concept, both intellectually and stylishly, is very much en vogue and, with prices on the rise, there’s never been a better time to invest in pocket watches.

POCKET A PROFIT

Wrist watches are cool. A good suit or jacket, a smart pair of shoes and a good watch will say everything about your personality and, in business, sometimes that matters. The new trend for timepieces is the pocket watch making a comeback after 100 years in the wilderness.

TIME TO INVEST

Pocket watches went out of favour around 100 years ago when the wrist watch arrived on the scene. So out of favour that the vast majority were binned or recycled for parts or gold leaving relatively very few in existence today. We’ve put a few pieces together sourced from Jack Cohen in David Edwards Jewellers in Royal Arcade, Cardiff. Jack is a self-confessed fan of pocket watches: “I absolutely love them,” he enthuses. “They’re beautiful and they’re growing in popularity again. They set off a good suit beautifully and, if you invest well, could provide a very good return in years to come.”

“ Pre-owned is the best invest- ment - All pocket watches have a story, they have patina, they have character.”

David Edwards jewellers has an excellent selection of pre-owned and pre-loved pocket watches and wrist watches. “Pre-owned is the best investment,” says Jack. “All these pocket watches have a story, they have patina, they have character. They bring something special to the table. Many are quite rare and, ultimately, very valuable.” However, entry level prices are reasonable and you can certainly pick up a fine pocket watch for reasonable money. Chances are, in the long run it’ll be a good investment and you can have the added benefit of making money on something that’s beautiful to look at – you may even find you catch the collector bug. So take time out and pay Jack a visit in Royal Arcade, who knows, besides looking smart, you may pocket a profit in the long run. 18

Actor and writer Boyd Clack is a big fan of Cook. “I live locally and having Cook nearby is convenient and the choice is excellent,” says Boyd.

In 2015 Joan Reen graced the cover of InBusiness which included a feature on Ynyshir Hall, one of our all-time favourite hotels. Joan was special; one of those rare people that made you feel at home even though you’d just met her. Peter Da Silva, PR and marketing consultant, remembers a truly great lady.

R EMEMBERING JOAN REEN Unfailingly modest, there is no doubt about Joan’s charisma (in 2015 she had a ten page cover interview in this magazine). She cites her parents as role models; “Together they created a fantastic business and ran it very successfully for 50 years. They made sure each of their four daughters had a university education, but most important, they instilled into all of us a work ethic that has stayed with us all our lives.” Fiona Duncan, the UK’s leading hotel critic of the Daily Telegraph reviewed the hotel in May 2015 awarding it a 9 out of 10. She commented; “It would make a good book, even a film.” Joan Reen was a truly remarkable woman and made a huge impact on all those she met. Running one of the UK’s leading country house hotels with her husband Rob, Joan would meet many thousands of people over the years, and all who met her felt compelled to return if only to spend some time with her. I know this first hand. When I first met Joan, I was working for a hotel group and she instantly became my favourite hotel manager. Ynyshir Hall is such a special place and Joan and Rob made the hotel even more appealing. I’ll never forget her warmth when I started my own PR business six years ago and contacted Joan first to work with her once again. Along with Rob and her business partner John, Joan accepted my proposal and from there a friendship grew and grew. On Friday 12th February 2016 aged just 67 Joan died. It was a shock to everyone. Her funeral attracted hundreds of people, all of whom felt like family. Joan had that unique quality to make everyone feel welcome, to make everyone feel included and ultimately she made you feel like you were family.

“Her beloved hotel is a testament to her creativity and passion.”

Over the last six years Ynyshir Hall has appeared in many national, regional and local newspapers and magazines. Every journalist who wrote about Ynyshir Hall also wrote about Joan and Rob Reen. Both had such a huge impact on everyone they met and this resulted in rave reviews from people in the UK but also globally with fans of Ynyshir visiting regularly from the USA, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand and Germany. The family at Ynyshir Hall continues today and Joan personally chose her loyal team. Gareth Ward is the awardwinning chef, one of the UK’s best who has been at the hotel for several years now. Throughout the years, Joan and Rob transformed Ynyshir Hall into one of the UK’s finest country house hotels. Under the Reens, the hotel became a foodie destination holding a Michelin star over thirteen years. Last year, it became the only place in Wales to be awarded 4 AA Rosettes having held 3 AA Rosettes for twenty years. Ynyshir Hall has appeared in ‘The Good Food Guide’ for the last 26 years. It was also awarded AA Hotel of the Year, Wales in 2014. Gareth Ward has been part of all of these recent wins. Joan and Rob Reen took ownership of Ynyshir Hall in 1989. Prior to acquiring and managing Ynyshir Hall, Joan and Rob were both teachers. Famous guests have included Richard Gere, Julia Ormond and Eddie Izzard among many others. 22

There will be no one like Joan again in this industry. Her beloved hotel is a testament to her creativity and passion. Joan is celebrated at Ynyshir Hall, and over this year several commemorative areas, dedicated to her memory, will be unveiled in the hotel and in the grounds. I miss Joan tremendously and am fortunate to be able to look back at the times I spent with her and also read the many hundreds of articles of happiness all describing Joan’s warmth. May she rest in peace.

Due to the huge success of Woods of Whitchurch, the famous pit stop in the gorgeous Herefordshire countryside, owner Lucy Gardner has just opened her second venture: Woody’s Coffee Shop. Featuring an art gallery, this indie café will be conveniently located above Lucy’s current venue, Woods.

DARE TO DREAM

It’s lovely to see you again Lucy, what led you to launch Woody’s Coffee Shop? It’s mainly down to the huge success of Woods of Whitchurch. When I originally bought the premises, I always dreamed that one day we would open a hub for local people to meet in a relaxing setting. In fact, my mother Valerie sparked the idea, and saw the potential - even naming it Woody’s. Sadly she passed away in 2013, and I made a promise to her that one day, in the future, we would open Woody’s and so she’s been my inspiration throughout. We’re very much looking forward to welcoming customers, old and new, to our latest venue. What food and drinks will we be able to enjoy at Woody’s? As you’d expect from us, our food will be homemade and locally sourced wherever possible. We’ll serve a variety of teas, coffees, soft drinks and, of course, our homemade cakes. During the day we’ll have light bites, a hot dish of the day, soup, a build your own sandwich bar with a choice of bread from our bread basket, a sweet and savoury tart of the day, fish and chips every Friday afternoon, a raclette every Sunday, and breakfasts on weekends and during school holidays.

Tell us about the arts and crafts at Woody’s? We have a resident artist, Amanda Hamilton, her quirky watercolours are showcased here; the large mural featuring Woody the squirrel is painted by local artist Nette Ingram, and we’ll feature a guest artist each quarter. In addition we’re holding various evening classes such as wood carving, jewellery, cribbage, pottery and painting. We’ll host children’s story time for the toddlers and fun bingo for the older children - parents can relax and have a coffee.

Plus we’re waiting for our license application to be approved. Watch this space. Please contact Lucy on 01600 891021 for class bookings and to enquire for private hire.

“ As you’d expect from us, our food will be home made and locally sourced wherever possible.”

It sounds great. We understand that Woody’s is available for private hire, can you tell us a little about that? Yes we can cater for up to thirty people during the evenings, and we’ve already taken bookings for May. We can offer catering, and help with planning any celebration/private event. Do you have any plans for the future? So Woody’s is definitely expanding… Yes. Woody’s will be expanding, with French windows and a balcony to overlook a new planned landscape garden. Our customers will be able to enjoy dining al fresco, and the potted plants we’ll produce in our garden will be available to purchase. 24

UNSAFE & INSECURE Chris Benson is CEO of CIT Cyber Security in Barry. The company has grown from a sole trader in 2003 to a staff of eight and is set to double its turnover and staff during the next financial year, which suggests that we’re not quite as safe as we think we are? How did you get into the cyber security business? I joined BT as an apprentice at sixteen years of age. I was interested in telecoms and the expansion of the telecommunications industry seemed a good career – the sector was booming. Those were the golden years - exciting times.

I left and started working in London in the corporate sector; clients like NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telecom), and Nokia on their 3G network. Times were good, the sector was booming but the bubble had to burst eventually (as they do), the telecoms downturn in 2003 meant that a lot of us were out on our ears. It happens.

You then joined the army. Tell us about your time in the military… My experience in BT with data communication networks meant that I could fast track my way through the military until, eventually, I was looking after secure, anti-terrorist networks in Europe and the Middle East. Quite high level operations and activities I certainly can’t discuss here but, what that did do for me, was give me experience at a level most civilians can only dream of. Let’s just say I’ve been up close and personal with real exotic, cutting edge data hacking and data protection solutions.

How did you end up in Barry? I met a girl and fell in love, she is the reason all of this started and we are still happily married. While I was down here, I decided to start a small IT company servicing SME’s and small companies and providing advice on security, networking and consultancy

And after the army? I enjoyed my time there - lots of travelling and learned a massive amount about my chosen field but it was time for a change. I felt I needed to progress and that wasn’t going to happen there.

Chris, are we safe? The simple answer is no. Why not? What’s the greatest threat to a company? The biggest threats come from within either maliciously or by error. It only takes one person to compromise the shield and you’re in serious trouble. Just simple errors can cause massive problems. For example, clicking on an email attachment, or plugging in a memory stick that has been sent to you or given to you. 26

These can be quite innocent errors but the fallout can be catastrophic. How can CIT Cyber Security help? We provide training and consultancy. We can also offer insurance policies to protect companies against the consequences of a serious cyber attack. Every business is different, so we tailor the advice and training to that business to ensure that every precaution is taken and the risks are reduced. What kind of clients do you work with? Anyone who needs our help. How serious is the problem? Consider that around 80% of all the email and data traffic flying around the planet is garbage. The vast majority of spam and malicious malware is filtered out by ISP’s before we even send and receive our email accounts. Imagine how much there is? The problem is huge and the hackers and conmen are constantly developing new ways to infiltrate your system. They literally don’t sleep. I could tell you stories that would make your toes curl. Basically there are two kinds of people: Those who’ve been hacked and those who will be targeted.

What can we do to protect ourselves? Be vigilant. Change your passwords regularly. Don’t use the same password for multiple applications. Run top grade ant-virus protection (get advice). Check your insurance - are you covered? Ultimately, if you’re serious about protecting your assets then contact us to see how we can help you. How often are businesses hacked? It’s not a question of if, but when. We all make mistakes, we all drop our guard and that’s when they strike. Here’s a good example; a friend of mine was visiting China recently and bought a USB drive there. When he got back to the UK, he popped it in his machine and the anti-virus lit up like a Christmas tree. The thing was brand new, out of the pack, and riddled with malware. What about anti-virus? Good anti-virus can help. It used to be that you could update once a week, now if you haven’t updated within the last four hours, it could be considered negligent. The bad guys (and girls) are always looking for what we call ‘Zero Day Attack’ opportunities. What that means is they are trying to create a virus, or trojan, that can be unleashed and do its damage before the major anti-virus companies have managed to design a solution.

“ Just simple errors can cause massive problems.” What can we do to protect ourselves? Be vigilant. Change your passwords regularly. Don’t use the same password for multiple applications. Run top grade ant-virus protection (get advice). Check your insurance - are you covered? Ultimately, if you’re serious about protecting your assets, you’ll employ a company like us.

“Every business is different, so we tailor the advice and train- ing to that business to ensure that every precaution is taken and the risks are reduced.” 27

There are new kids on the block. The Beefy Boys Meat Boutique is slap bang in the middle of Hereford and, it’s fair to say, this indie restaurant is smashing it with their multi award-winning burgers. We popped along to chat with owners Murf (Anthony Murphy), Christian Williams, Daniel Mayo-Evans and Lee Symonds…

BURGER ME!

Congratulations on your success; can you tell us a bit about how you came to set up Beefy Boys? We met in our school days; four food and music loving friends from Hereford - and the concept for our restaurant originated from our summer BBQs which were very popular. In 2013 we entered the famous Grillstock ‘King of the Grill’ which is a huge two-day US style low ‘n’ slow BBQ competition with twenty-two teams from around the world battling it out over the smokey coals to be crowned ‘Grand Champion’. We came seventh that year, but the following year we won the best burger category!

“ We won the best burger category!”

Following this we were invited to the annual World Burger Championships held in Las Vegas, and we came second out of fifty teams. This led to some great publicity, including an appearance on The One Show. In 2015 we came seventh and we’ve already been invited for this year’s event in Alabama. During this time we ran a series of pop-up restaurants and provided catering for private events and festivals. The natural progression was for us to open a restaurant. What made you choose this location for your restaurant? As local boys we were determined to stay loyal to Hereford for our first restaurant, and we wanted to be in the city centre. We were approached to open on the site of the Old Market which was perfect for us. 28

“ We’re proud to source our ingredients from local producers.” And we feel very fortunate that our landlords, British Land, invited us, as an independent business, into the centre - they’ve been great, incredibly supportive. Where do you source your beef, and how important is this to you? We’re proud supporters of local businesses and source our ingredients from producers such as Neil Powell Butchers, Peter Cooks Bread and Wye Valley Brewery. Herefordshire beef is renowned for its unique flavour and marbling of the meat, so this is extremely important to us.

Aside from the Herefordshire beef, what gives your dishes the wow factor? It has to be our passion and, of course, our visits to the USA have certainly influenced our food. As well as our juicy, 100% Hereford beef burgers our customers can enjoy weekly specials and we even have veggie burgers for the non-meat eaters among us. Our aim is to keep developing our burgers for the perfect patty that you just can’t get anywhere else.

We know your restaurant is relatively new, but do you have any plans for the future? Definitely. We want to expand the business so we’re planning our second restaurant, and we’ll continue with our pop-ups and private event catering, and look out for our food truck at various festivals. For the immediate future we’ll be installing heater umbrellas at this restaurant shortly for outside dining.

We also have a bar for beers, lagers, and the usual spirits, wines and Champagne as well as our fast growing cocktail menu. Each cocktail is unique, and again we’ve worked as a team to develop cocktails that are a bit different to those usually found in most bars. And, of course, our menu wouldn’t be complete without Butty Bach from Wye Valley Brewery.

Nestling in the tranquil lower reaches of the beautiful Wye Valley, a centre for tourism since 1780, Monmouth is a very successful market town, where the strength of the retail sector is underpinned by the custom of pupils and parents of renowned educational establishments.

HIGH STREET SUCCESS

David Cummings, Chairman of Monmouth and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is passionate about the town and here, exclusively for Wye Life, David waxes lyrical about his beloved town. Good road links, and a mixture of independent and niche retailers, create an environment that produces arguably the lowest level of empty shops for any town in Wales. We attract day visitors from as far away as Cardiff, Ludlow, Bristol and Swindon, so must have the retail offering to suit all tastes! If you want Italian, Mexican, Spanish or Thai restaurants, speciality teas, wood burning stoves, homewares, housewares, haberdashery, beauticians, designer shoes, designer fashion, toys, gifts, hand-made jewellery, or even a coffee in a café in a quiet courtyard, then Monmouth is the place to visit.

Once your retail therapy is appeased, take a little while to imbibe the history of a town famous for its connections to Henry V, Geoffrey of Monmouth, the Chartists and Charles Rolls. Spare time to visit the Museum, the Castle, old Monnow Bridge and our iconic Shire Hall. In more recent times, it has been the place where the creative talents of Queen, Coldplay, Oasis, Simple Minds, Stone Roses and many more have been recorded. In 2012 Monmouth became the first Wikipedia town in the world and QR codes on the thousand plaques, seemingly around every corner, explain its history and background. If the weather is fine, rest awhile overlooking the gatehouse on old Monnow Bridge or watch the rowing boats, canoes, swans and the occasional kingfisher on the banks of the Wye. 30

Whatever your palate, retail taste or way you like to relax, I believe that Monmouth is the place to satisfy all.

From nightclub founder to Hollywood actor, Welsh artist makes a name of himself in City of Angels, Cardiff-born actor Gianluca Malacrino, 24, is making a name for himself in Hollywood.

GIANLUCA Following his graduation from AMDA College & Conservatory for the Performing Arts, the worldrenowned acting academy, Gianluca has now secured several professional acting roles throughout Los Angeles.

A proud Welsh Italian, Gianluca founded at the age of 20 The Ladybird Nightclub as well as Kapu Bar and Lounge, two successful venues featured at the helm of Cardiff ’s nightlife. Though he loved working in hospitality, Gianluca decided to pursue his passion for acting-taking a risk, he sold his successful businesses to take an Actor’s Workshop in Cardiff with screenwriter and filmmaker Rebecca Hardy. As Rebecca notes, “Gianluca is a talented up and coming actor. He thrived with us during his time at Actors Workshop, and has worked hard in LA over the past two years to progress his talent. I’m delighted to see how successful he has been at AMDA, and have no doubt he’ll have a brilliant career. I wish him the best of luck, and hope to see Gianluca on the big screen representing a new generation of Welsh talent much like Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ioan Gruffudd, and Matthew Rees before him. I hope we’ll have him back in Wales soon to work on films and programmes here too!” His sights, however, were set on Hollywood, and in 2013 Gianluca flew out to Los Angles to try his luck

auditioning for AMDA College & Conservatory of the Performing Arts. The risk paid off.

AMDA not only offered him a place in their highly competitive two-year acting studio program, they gave him a scholarship-an enormous feat for an international student. With past alumni including music sensation Jason Derulo as well as critically-acclaimed actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Paul Sorvino, the intense programme offers training with current Hollywood actors, choreographers, casting agents, and voice artists. Gianluca said: “During my time at AMDA I pushed myself harder than ever before and discovered a deeper artistic side which I didn’t even know I possessed, I felt a new passion and hunger inside that had been ignited. My life has been a crazy but exciting rollercoaster for the past five years, and I couldn’t be happier.” Not content with 80 hour weeks spent at auditions and rehearsals, with business in his blood, he founded a new business entitled pouringsolutions. com, which offers a series of stylized liquor decanters crafted from aluminium to accommodate glassware restrictions on nightclubs and bars - a tip of the hat to his nightclub past. 32

Since graduation, Gianluca has signed with the Ideal Talent Agency in Los Angeles and has already secured his first lead role in a professional production with the prestigious Robey Theatre Company at the Los Angeles Theatre Centre in LA. Gianluca plays the role of New York mobster Mike Maffucci in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play No Place to Be Somebody. In addition, Gianluca finished filming Blasterjaxx & Breathe Carolina’s latest music video “Soldier”, and will be starring in Christopher Ad Castillo’s forthcoming movie Night Rider, currently in pre-production. Gianluca continued: “I can finally say I am living my dream, and cannot imagine doing anything but acting, the amount of support I have had over here and back home in Wales has been incredible, and I am very grateful for it. My plan is stay in LA to expand my knowledge in acting and screen writing as well as pursue my dream of starring in TV, theatre, and film globally but I will always miss Wales and hope to visit soon!” To follow Gianluca’s journey or contact him with any questions, follow him on Twitter @GLucaMalacrino or visit www.gianluca-malacrino.com

If you ask most parents why they chose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe their child will a) receive a better standard of education, b) have better opportunities for future careers, c) be more disciplined, and d) benefit from smaller pupil-teacher ratios.

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

All are good reasons. InBusiness chats to the Head of St Clare’s School, Simon Antwis, to find out more, particularly about the Nursery. Who does the school cater for? We are a non-selective school for both boys and girls aged 2½ up to 18. We have many pupils leave our Sixth Form at the end of Year 13 who have been with us since their Nursery days! What is so special about St Clare’s Nursery? Small class sizes, experienced staff, individual learning journeys and a high degree of interaction with parents, combine to ensure that each child receives individual attention in a safe, enjoyable, caring and creative environment.

Not all nurseries have nursery staff who are qualified teachers, and our pupils are very privileged to receive the care that they do. We always knew the provision to be excellent and were delighted that Estyn agreed in 2014 and graded the Nursery as “Excellent”; that’s the highest grade that can be given. Why do you call the early years the crucial years? From a child’s very first day at our school we lay the foundation for a love of learning that will remain with them throughout the course of their school life. The early years of a child’s education are ones of excitement, exploration and discovery. It is a time when they are introduced to a world beyond the secure and familiar confines of home life, when they begin to make friends, experience new play opportunities and interact with adults beyond those of their immediate family.

“ Teaching is Excellent.” Estyn 2014 34

We believe that our youngest pupils thrive on the quality learning experiences that are planned and implemented by our team of highly dedicated staff. From Nursery onwards we introduce structured learning and challenge our pupils in English and Mathematics through theme related activities, with a strong focus on developing early literacy and numeracy skills. Is the Nursery part of the Prep School? The Nursery is a self-contained, purposebuilt unit, and offers outstanding levels of care and individual attention through a theme-based Learning Programme which includes a variety of academic, music, dance and art activities. Our large, secure outdoor play area provides an environment to help children develop physical skills, whilst we extend and enhance their cognitive and social skills. Our wide curriculum encompasses not only early literacy and numeracy skills but specialist subjects such as music, art, PE, ballet and the Welsh language. Children have access to mini iPads.

“Teachers and staff share high expectations of themselves and of the children.” Estyn 2014 Nursery Teachers also go beyond the Foundation Phase and introduce more structured and formal teaching to prepare the children for the more traditional methods of teaching and learning throughout the school. The children also benefit from the facilities available across the school such as the dining hall, large open grass spaces and main halls.

“ The Nursery provides parents with very good information about their child’s progress through the year.” Estyn 2014

Isn’t a private school Nursery more expensive? The Nursery at St Clare’s offers wraparound care between 8am and 6pm at a surprisingly affordable and competitive price. Early Years Education funding is available and Childcare Vouchers are also accepted.

As we go to press, there are two hot topics being discussed by south Wales business people: a) whether Port Talbot steelworks will find a buyer (currently seven expressions of interest), and b) should we leave the European Union or stay.

HOT TOPIC

In some respects they’re completely unrelated. However, many argue that one of the reasons Port Talbot is in trouble is because the UK is part of the EU we can’t stop cheap, heavily subsidised Chinese steel coming into the country and, it’s my understanding, we can’t legally subsidise the steel we manufacture in the UK for use in the UK. Already, this argument alone is fuel for the Brexit furnace. “If we were outside, we could stop the cheap Chinese steel coming in by imposing import tariffs or just subsidising our own!” Who can argue? It does seem a terribly un-level playing field if you’re a British steel manufacturer. Having said that, there are those that argue that Port Talbot should be profitable anyway. If a new owner can make it profitable, why can’t the old one?

“We have huge manu- facturing experience in Wales and an able and talented workforce.”

But isn’t this situation a perfect example of the free market? Isn’t this capitalism in its purest form? Always being competitive, always price driven - isn’t this what competitive commerce is all about? Whatever the outcome in Port Talbot (and I hear plenty of people, while sympathetic to the steel workers plight, say that it’s not the country’s job to prop up an uncompetitive industry), the dust will settle and we will forge on so to speak. However, this one issue has inspired much debate. What’s good about these kind of situations is it gets us talking. I have had more conversations with business people in the last month about doing business in Wales than in the whole year before. The Welsh Assembly Government is usually berated for “lacking vision”, and the general consensus is we’re “not grown up” about business in Wales. There is some truth in both those views (don’t shoot the messenger). My own view is that we have a real opportunity to create a truly vibrant commercial culture in Wales. We’re small enough to build a Wales Business Brand. So what are our strong points? 36

Manufacturing We have huge manufacturing experience in Wales and an able and talented workforce who want to work. We could and should be more competitive. Wales has brilliant people and the days of shifting our manufacturing facilities to Eastern Europe are surely over - I know quite a few companies that caught a cold doing that. Creative Wales is a creative super power - we just need to acknowledge that and build on it. From design to architecture and music to technology, Wales punches well above its weight but, again, it’s not supported anywhere like as much as it could or should be. Technology Some of our wealthiest and most successful business people have built their companies in the technology market. Sadly some had to leave Wales to do that but all the elements are here. We have amazingly talented people working in the private sectors and in universities, so why are we not the UK’s hot bed for technology?

Digital infrastructure is also something we need to address. There are many parts of Wales where you simply can’t get a phone signal and broadband speed is so low it makes doing business almost impossible.

Food and beverage Brains are doing pretty well these days (Coffee#1 is a great success), as are quite a few of the micro-breweries and vineyards around Wales. We have fantastic produce but the marketing is lacklustre and needs co-ordinating.

We have fantastic countryside - all the elements, but we’re just not getting the message out there. Every time I mention Visit Wales to anyone in the hospitality industry their eyes roll and I hear the usual moans and groans. Surely we can be doing better.

Sport Sport is huge in Wales. We have a real passion for it but less of our children are taking part and we seem to be far too weighted to our national game, which I love, but there needs to be more focus on a wider range of sports. Healthwise, it’s great for the nation and also good for…

It’s frustrating. We have so much to offer but, through one reason and another, businesses in Wales aren’t getting the opportunities to grow and reach their potential. Returning to the steel industry, whenever there’s a crisis, everyone runs around like headless chickens trying to find a solution (usually with some kind of government support), but yet there’s very little support for other smaller businesses who could ultimately employ many more people and ensure that Wales runs profitably.

So what’s the solution? I don’t have the answers but, if we want this great country to be operating at a world class level, we need to look at making it easy to do business here. That could be tax incentives. Every time I hear people talk about Wales having tax raising powers I think why can’t Wales have tax saving powers? Why can’t the VAT threshold be £150k a year? Why can’t business rates be less? Why can’t corporation tax be lower? Where are the tax breaks for manufacturing and technology companies? But hang on, that would mean us going it alone… wouldn’t it?

Infrastructure is one of the things that the Welsh government could zero in on. Our roads in the south are really quite appalling and the debacle of the M4 bypass around Newport has run on long enough - decisions need to be made. We need to be more decisive.

One person I talked to thought that we should long lease brown field sites to wealthy foreign investors with rate incentives. As he put it, we (Wales) don’t have the money to invest, so why not let someone else take the risk without giving them a massive handout.

Tourism & Hospitality The big one. Probably Wales’ biggest missed opportunity. Why? Because we just don’t get it. The reality is we’re not very good at saying please and thank you. Seriously. One of the things we have to get over is this weird idea that being of service is somehow demeaning. Where are the national academies for hospitality? Why are there not more training courses? We’re losing out and some is down to attitude.

38

“ if we want this great country to be operating at a world class level, we need to look at making it easy to do busi- ness here.” Whatever your thoughts on Brexit or the future of steel manufacturing in Port Talbot, one thing’s for sure, government needs to be communicating more and working together with the business community in Wales for the greater good. The rewards for Wales are there, we just need to show a bit of hwyl and make it happen.

“ A full quarter (25%) wanted the new government to make a fairer business rates system a priority, while 22% wanted to see the creation of a single body to support small businesses.” FSB Survey

BREXIT OR REMAIN

What you say… “Out definitely. We’re slaves to Europe. We’ve had our hands tied for too long.” “I think we’ve more to gain by being in. Some relationships need time. We need to work things out.” “They’re killing my business. Too much red tape. I say we should grab the opportunity and leave.” “I’m for staying in. We’ve got stability. It would be madness to leave now.” “Out. Don’t think for a minute BMW, Mercedes or any of the other big German companies are going to stop selling to us. We’re a huge market!” Image courtesy of Nick Collins, Grate Catering Ltd.

“Remain. Leaving is too risky.” What are your thoughts? In or out? You can share your thoughts on Brexit or any other aspect of Welsh business with us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/inbizwales or by emailing us. 39

Emma Cull, lives in North Cornelly near the beautiful Kenfig Hill Nature Reserve and, in our opinion, has a real talent for interior design, so when she wanted some new furniture, only bespoke would do, and that meant a call to Jack & Rose.

INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED A ND LOVINGLY CREATED

How did you hear about Jack and Rose? I was introduced to Dave from Jack & Rose through Julie Hughes of Interiors, Bridgend who has supplied our handmade curtains.

Jack and Rose made me exactly what I required, and to the size I required, to fit into my home. The wide choice of fabrics was also a massive positive; the only hard bit was to actually choose as there is so much choice.

What made you want to work with them? What I loved about the service Jack and Rose provided was to have the bespoke touch of the furniture, which I just couldn’t get in any of the other furniture shops. Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service. If I was unsure of something, Dave would bring the piece of furniture to our home allowing us to see how it would look before he went to the next stage of upholstering, which always gave us great reassurance.

What work did Jack and Rose carry out for you? My first purchase from Jack & Rose was a two seater settee to fit in our kitchen living area. From seeing the high quality of that piece of furniture, we ordered two Chesterfield style settees as part of a scheme that I was working on with Julie from interiors, who works closely with Dave. Then I bought a French bed for my little girl’s bedroom which needed some work so Jack and rose stripped, painted and re upholstered it it’s beautiful. 40

They also supplied the wallpaper to match the bed for our little girl’s bedroom. We then extended our kitchen so needed a bigger settee, so asked Dave to come and advise us on what we could have. From there we purchased two armchairs and another settee, which is very comfortable, with great child proof fabric and also looks good. We have also purchased a super king size bed, dining chairs, and had more furniture re-upholstered. Did you have your own ideas or did you work with an interior designer? Yes, I did have my own ideas of what I wanted and how I wanted the furniture to look like, but I did also get some ideas from the internet and Jack and Rose’s show room was a big help.

“Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service.”

Owner, David Waters talks a little about the history of Jack and Rose... How long has Jack and Rose been established? Jack and Rose was started by the Rowe company in 1995, supplying House of Fraser, the Rowe company had been manufacturing carpets since 1934. Jack and Rose was set up to complement this side of the business. Who are the owners of the business? We have been making the Jack and Rose furniture for the Rowe Company since 2011 and, in 2014, I acquired the brand and specialised in bespoke furniture, supplying interior designers and private clients. I am third generation in the upholstery business.

Where you happy with the end product? Definitely! We’ve been very happy with every purchase from Jack & Rose; the furniture standards are set very high and have been everything I imagined and more.

furniture from Jack and Rose after seeing and sitting on the furniture they have made for us. Dave is friendly, professional and very helpful - Jack and Rose have met all our expectations.

How long did the process take? I do take a long time to make my mind up, but as soon as I decided on what I wanted, the furniture making was around six to eight weeks.

What services do you offer? We offer a fully tailored service for both individual private clients and interior designers; any size, any shape, any material; if it involves upholstery, we can create it. For sofas, chairs and beds, we can take a drawing or a photo and create almost anything. Who would you like to work for? We would love to expand our commercial profile. We enjoy collaborating with designers when they are creating a hotel scheme or working with individual boutique hotels in creating a one-off statement piece to set a style.

Would you be happy to recommend Jack and Rose to friends and colleagues? Yes we’d highly recommend Jack and Rose to friends, and anyone else looking for that something special. My sister and brother have since purchased

One of the joys of working on InBusiness is meeting new and interesting people with a story to tell. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Penarth welcome us into their beautiful home in Penarth.

OPEN HOUSE

We were shown around their home but the stand-out room for us was the gorgeous kitchen, incorporating a beautiful super-wide set of aluminium bi/fold doors by Alexander James Bi-fold. How did you hear about Alexander James Bi-folds? I heard about AAI through a fitter that my brother and I were using on another project we are currently working on. Having gone to great lengths to source two sets of bi-folds for that particular project, I was fairly confident that I was already getting the best deal and service around. However, one telephone conversation followed by an emailed quotation from Andrew proved me wrong.

“We are absolutely delighted with the completed extension, the design is flawless.

AAI were then contracted by me to supply a five metre set of aluminium bi-folding doors in charcoal grey which would ultimately become the predominant feature of a full-width single-storey extension to the rear of my own property in Penarth. What made you want to work with AAI? As partners who have rather fallen into building and property development, my brother and I pride ourselves on the high standard of the tradesmen, subcontractors and suppliers that we have built up over the last ten or so years. Quality, and reliability are essential, that and a very tightly controlled budget.

How did the project go? This being my own property, and what with a young family in residence throughout the build, scheduling was also of paramount importance, [especially given the fact that the project spanned the winter months!]. For this reason, and in conjunction with AAI, we elected to install the doors prior to knocking the original back wall of the house down. The compromise was that great care had to be taken to protect them throughout the job. This was easily offset by the benefit of the natural light it afforded, the insulation and also the facility to fold away the opening in order to disperse vast quantities of dust!

Generally speaking any project which includes a set of bi-folds implies a finish of a highly considered nature. The design is absolutely key. For this we are extremely fortunate to have the expert services of my sister-in-law Abigail Grummitt, whose website speaks for itself.

Were you pleased with the overall effect? We are absolutely delighted with the completed extension, the design is flawless. It is a dream open-plan space which also includes a separate utility room in which to shut away

42

boots, shoes, coats and all the other paraphernalia of modern day life, as well as providing an all-important second back door. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? Having exposed the chimney breast and installed a multi-fuel stove, this winter has been the cosiest on record; you cannot beat a real fire! Come the summer we are looking forward to entertaining on the patio our new doors neatly folded away. Furthermore, my wife has developed considerable flair when it comes to interior design, even though she will hate me for writing it! Would you be happy to recommend them to friends and colleagues? Moving forward Andrew and his team at AAI have become a much appreciated asset to our extensive team and future collaborations both on our own work and that of private clients is certain.

Advertising has changed a lot since the heady, golden years of the 70s and 80s. Rob Petersen, Managing Director of Petersens PR reminisces...

M AD WORLD HOW A DVERTISING H AS CHANGED SINCE THE 70’S

Celebration of advertising through the Century

I started out as a Business graduate from Bristol in the 1970s, and began work as a Trainee in the Media Planning department of a very busy local independent Cardiff advertising agency, Creighton Griffiths, whose clients included Wales Gas, Corona, Barker and Dobson Sweets and Rizla cigarette papers.

Panasonic TVs. Its anecdotes about the 60s ‘Ad Land’ made it a key source of Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner when building the world of Stirling Cooper.

A lot has changed since those days, and I have been lucky enough to have been part of a most exciting industry which plays an ever-increasing role in the economy of not just the UK but internationally as well.

Jerry, a creative genius of his generation, all but led a creative revolution in ‘Ad Land’. Some of the world-famous campaigns such as “Just Do It” for Nike, “It’s the Real Thing” for Coca Cola and “A Diamond is Forever” for Debeers, which ran in the years to come were really inspired by Jerry and other creatives and were crucially seen as entertainment as well as educational and informative.

In the 70s, the big names of advertising were the legendary Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy and Mather, JW Walter Thompson and McCann Erickson Agencies. Back then, the one book all aspiring young Advertising Professionals had to read was “From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbour”, written by the famous American Jerry Della Femina and taking its title from a suggestion he made to colleagues about how they could sell

Agencies like the one I started in relied heavily at the time on data produced by research and media organisations giving often long, out-of-date readership research audience information, which resulted in many assumptions having to be made on possible advertising campaign coverage. Publications such as BRAD and NRS Surveys gave historical information on advertising rates and circulation that were crucial to advertising agencies. 44

In 2016, such has been the revolution in media planning that so much is now known about consumers that advertisers can easily target particular individuals by buying habits as well as predicting potential need for future sales and requirements. The days have gone of devising multi-media campaigns for TV, cinema, outdoor and press which often took days to compile such campaigns can now be put together in minutes! Other changes, the expansion of radio, where there was only the BBC with some private stations such as Luxembourg and Caroline, there are now thousands of national, local and even town stations covering niche audiences. The expansion of choice by TV, both live and recorded, has also had a huge impact. I remember well, sitting as a child around the family’s small box set, watching TV in black and white. In the late 50s ITV was born and competition for the viewer increased. Now there are thousands of channels available for advertisers to choose from, each targeting different demographics.

“ Advertising is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.”

Of truly dramatic importance has been the launch and development of the web and, more recently, Social Media with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn having millions of followers and users. On these new platforms, targeting consumers is sophisticated and needs careful planning to avoid unnecessary costs being incurred. People ask me if there is still a place in advertising for the traditional agency, whose primary role was to create advertising and plan and book appropriate media.

I strongly believe that the importance of agencies remains crucial for clients to get the best impartial advice on where they should advertise and what messages to use. The growth of media independence and creative shops was always inevitable, and they serve an important element of the advertising industry. Looking forward, if agencies are to continue to grow and prosper, they must deliver the very best media advice and buying as well as awardwinning creative work. I think they can and they will.

(Centre) Jack Petersen the famous Welsh Boxing Champion, (left) Denis Compton the ledgendary English cricket test player and Brylcreem Boy

I have seen many changes for the better in my forty years in advertising and enjoyed most of my time immensely. From winning awards for creative work for companies such as The Royal Mint, to getting real satisfaction when a client has taken my advice and run with a campaign I knew would work, my career has had many high points. Seeing our young graduates, with my guidance, turning into highly talented, professional advertising professionals has also been extremely rewarding and gratifying. In summary, and as my wonderful icon Jerry Della Femina once said, “I honestly believe that advertising is the most fun you can have with your clothes on” - hard work, long hours, but great fun. Long may it survive. Petersens PR Pentwyn Business Centre Wharfedale Road, Cardiff CF23 7HB 029 2054 9597 www.petersenspr.com

There’s no question about it, we’re living in the most media-saturated society the world has ever seen. With over 76% of adults in the UK owning a smart phone; more than a billion active Facebook users worldwide; and 100 million posting on Instagram each month, there’s certainly no such thing as a digital decline - in fact it’s increasingly on the up.

THE T WITTERATI TWITTER

InBusiness Top Tips So how can you Tweet the best of your brand’s ability? Our top five tips for using Twitter in business will keep you in the know: 1. Create a community Working alongside other companies, even if they’re a cafe while you’re an art gallery, is mutually beneficial. You can learn from each other and team up to develop events that tie you together. 2. Keep it frequent Only Tweeting during the day is a rookie error. Yes, you can still have a life away from the office walls, thanks to the handy invention of Hoot Suite, where you can schedule Tweets for later times. A Buffer Social analysis of 4.8m Tweets indicated that evenings and late at night actually evoke the most Retweets and likes.

Ellie Philpotts

Why Twitter matters to business and InBusiness magazine’s top twenty business Tweeters. InBusiness ‘Socialite’ Ellie Philpotts explains what this means for to you. Well, the aim of a company has always been to make profit and create, then maintain, a sturdy reputation, promoting efficient customer service and competitive value for money in the process. But since the online revolution of the last decade, businesses have been able to utilise new methods of spreading the word, and it seems there’s no better example than Twitter. When Twitter launched in July 2006, just four months after being created by a humble team of four, no-one took a great deal of notice. By the end of that year, there were just 16,000 accounts, but, clearly in an example of successful business marketing itself, numbers soon began rapidly multiplying. According to Quora, 2007 saw 702,000 users, while an incredible 50 million Tweets per day were being sent by February 2010.

Now, the development of Twitter has accelerated at even more unprecedented rates. In January this year, it counted 332 million active members, who are collectively responsible for 500 million Tweets per day, equating to 200 billion annually. Over 60% of these are sent from phones – and crucially, many are typed, in the trademark 140 characters, by businesses. With the fierce competition faced by companies in the current economic climate, having a reputable Twitter account is analogous to success from every angle. Twitter allows almost instantaneous distribution of breaking news; step-by-step revelation of longterm plans and projects; a realm of information waiting to be unearthed; platform for discussion and debate; a sharing of ideas and education; relatable, simple-to-understand messages; the visuals of images and videos; and, of course, the ability to sell your brand, ethos and products in an easy yet effective manner. 46

3. Be real Of course, the line between the private and professional on Twitter is a thin one, especially as many business people have personal accounts too (Shock horror work doesn’t consume our entire being, just 90% of it.) Don’t reveal too much, but it’s nice to be somewhat colloquial on Twitter. Keep it more formal on emails and your website - but don’t become another faceless, unapproachable organisation while Tweeting. 4. Make your bio count When considering whether to interact with you, your biography is among the first potential followers see. Keep it concise - you have just 160 characters. 5. Learn the tricks of the trade There’s a realm of info online, much of which lives on Twitter itself! Hashtags are one of Twitter’s unique selling points; with the click of a button, you can find others’ thoughts on the topic you’re discussing. Images and videos provide directly demonstrate to your followers; and with apps like Google’s URL shortener, you can squeeze links.

Although arguably the most effective online tool, Twitter alone is unlikely to make your business stand out. Facebook remains the social media platform with the most users worldwide, and businesses are still relying on it to generate their best content. Connecting your Twitter to your professional Facebook page means your Tweets and Retweets will post onto your timeline as well – and as long as you’re not absolutely overloading followers with constant streams, this is a savvy way of maximising attention to produce the most sought-after response. While the owners of different social media platforms might see them as rivals, combining sites can actually bring a realm of benefits for businesses. Facebook and Twitter, as the main examples, work relatively similarly – both allowing the spreading of whatever you decide to share, whether personally or professionally, but their differences are also notable.

They tend to have slightly different audiences – Facebook has been shifting from millennials and onto the 50+ demographic, although 87% of 18-29-year-olds living and working in urban environments still frequent the site, according to Sprout Social. Businesses’ Facebooks clearly state how many people your posts are reaching, as well as how many of these are actually ‘engaged’ – a tool I find beneficial when contributing to the City Life Cardiff page. Via numerical statistics and graphs, it also identities your most successful posts; any decline or rise in likes; and allows the entire page or specific links to be boosted, allowing you to further your audience. Twitter has implemented similar strategies, its Activity Dashboard documenting engagement; detail expands; likes and profile clicks – all vital for businesses to chart what’s causing a reaction.

“Only Tweeting during the day is a rookie error.” 47

“The development of Twitter has accelerated at unprecedented rates.” Twitter and Facebook certainly lead the way – but as the world grows all the more technologically advanced, other sites are becoming similarly valued. Photo-sharing app Instagram hit 400 million users this year, no mean feat considering it only launched in October 2010. While it’s differentiated from Twitter and Facebook in that text isn’t its main aim, Instagram too is a competent way for businesses to celebrate what they produce via the medium of attractive imagery. But social media isn’t reserved for huge names, like Starbucks, Topshop and Amazon. Here in Wales, independent businesses are doing a pretty fine job of using Twitter alongside their sales strategies, so here we’ve whittled them down to our top twenty Tweeters in the local business world.

Welsh Girl Problems

I Loves the Diff

Pad Deco

Problemau Merch. If there was ever someone who knows Twitter and business go hand in hand, it’s Welsh Girl Problems (or Problemau Merch to keep in touch with those Cymru roots).

It’s easy to see why I Loves the Diff has amassed over 35,000 followers.

Pad Deco’s very Twitter bio describes themselves as ‘not just a store, but an experience’, and in fact the same could be said for their social media pages.

This one-woman mission embodies everything it means to be a girl in modern Wales – think sweaters emblazoned with ‘rugby and chill’, and mugs asking ‘Don’t ya wish your girlfriend was Welsh like me?’ Which is of course a rhetorical question, because deep down, everyone wishes they were Welsh. Away from her products themselves, Welsh Girl Problems rules the social media scene – usually found pondering the trials, tribulations and downright fun times associated with, well, being a Welsh girl. twitter.com/ProblemauMerch

Wally’s Deli Nestled in Royal Arcade, Wally’s is highly regarded around Cardiff, having traded here for almost 60 years. You’ll really get the best tastes of Europe, with a particular speciality in German and Austrian deli dishes, while the adjacent kaffeehaus is also well worth a visit. As for the importance of Twitter? Owner Steven Salamon says, ‘Twitter is a great means for us to connect with our customers and be part of an ongoing conversation.’ Wally’s often interact with the Morgan Quarter on Twitter – highlighting the importance of retaining that community bond. twitter.com/wallysdeli

Since 2009, the very local brand have been entertaining us mere spectators – often via a series of witty yet educational Tweets which always manage to capture just why we love Cardiff and Wales so much. With clever puns such as ‘Some like it Splott’ and ‘Cwtch me if you can’ splashed over everything from mugs to baby t-shirts; greetings cards to even your very own portable bottles of ‘Cardiff rain’, we definitely do love their social media and stock almost as much as they loves the Diff. twitter.com/ILovesTheDiff

Pettigrew Tea Rooms

When your products are as pretty as Pettigrew Tea Rooms’, not showing them off in visual format over social media would be a wasted opportunity. With hashtags, retweets and plenty of other local business connections, this charming café nestled in Bute Park further demonstrate their Twitter talent with the fact that brand new venture Pettigrew Bakes already has over 600 tweets and followers, well before their grand launch. twitter.com/pettigrewtea

Demonstrating our top tip of continuing Tweeting beyond the 9-5 boundaries, the stunning Castle Arcade boutique can be found supporting other companies well into the evening, as well as hash-tagging, linking to other sites and giving their 1000+ followers regular helpings of interior imagery inspiration. twitter.com/paddeco

Miss Patisserie If there’s one to be said about Cardiff businesses as a whole, it’s that they like to get to know their customers. Miss Patisserie are a prime example. With thousands of fans on both Facebook and Twitter, the High Street Arcade store can often be found liaising with fans online – but this courtesy extends beyond the screen, as they’ve played host to Cardiff Bloggers events. The cruelty-free brand was founded in 2009 by Charlotte Ridgwell, who now takes styling inspiration from Paris and works alongside husband Jorge, when she’s not busy keeping both the shop and social media looking equally pretty and productive. twitter.com/MissPatisserie

The Castle Emporium

Wales Online recently ranked this charismatic cultural centre, based in Canton, Cardiff, the 8th most influential Twitter account to hail from Cymru, and we have to agree they fare pretty highly.

Park Plaza may be international, in capitals from London to Berlin, but, although we’re slightly biased, we can’t help thinking Cardiff ’s is extra special.

Regularly praised as one of the capital’s best independent offerings, The Castle Emporium brings an experience like no other.

Welcoming 800,000 annual visitors (Cardiff on the whole sees around 15 million) comes with the responsibility of maintaining unbeatable social media. With an incredible 46,700 followers, Chapter’s Twitter showcases a real community spirit, often supporting local talent in acting and the arts. twitter.com/chaptertweets

The Grazing Shed Proving it’s certainly possible for new businesses to thrive in a capital city, The Grazing Shed has enjoyed massive success since September 2013. The city might have no shortage of burger bars, but this cosy, friendly eatery on Barrack Lane certainly stands out - in fact, it’s so good, the home-grown company, who hone in on their ‘super tidy burgers’, last year expanded onto St Mary Street as well. It seems the only problem their 7,400 followers face, however, is the hunger they’re constantly exposed to, thanks to The Grazing Shed’s tendency to post scrumptious looking food shots… twitter.com/TheGrazingShed

The sleek hotel, spa and pool are sure to work together to ensure a good night’s kip, while the dining rooms’ afternoon tea is hard to beat. It’s also attached to Laguna Kitchen and Bar, a stylish terrace restaurant celebrating the best of both Welsh and foreign fare. And speaking of food, it seems culinary and Twitter go hand-in-hand. Park Plaza Cardiff ’s has nearly 11,000 followers – they have online marketing down to a T. twitter.com/ParkPlazaCardiff

Olwen The independent womenswear store’s slogan is ‘#morethanabrand’, and they demonstrate this on Twitter, right down to the symbolism of that very hashtag. Linking to their Instagram; posting beyond both their shop and opening hours, such as about other pieces of popular culture and what’s on; and collaborations with other Cardiff businesses, such as Little Man Coffee Co, all contribute to their Twitter credentials. twitter.com/olwenstore

Rather than being limited to just one store, the Womamby Street haven’s Twitter bio summarises its ‘unique shopping experience’ – it’s a hub of independent traders all operating under the same roof. Whether you’re looking for vintage fashions or vegan snacks, they’ve got you covered, and their social media envelopes their diversity with every success. twitter.com/castleemporium

Penylan Pantry Cardiff is known for its multitude of food, with American burger shacks; trendy cocktail bars; coffee shops on every corner and fine dining to name a few. But sometimes you just want a cosy, honest deli, and that’s where Penylan Pantry step in. With thousands of both Tweets and followers, the charming café and health store have mastered the digital game thanks to joining forces with other local organisations (The Italian Wine Women; Green City Events; We Are Cardiff); and generally using the platform to promote their healthy ethos and pedal-powered Veg Box scheme. twitter.com/PenylanPantry

The Little Man Coffee Co

In person, you’re spoilt for choice – the vintage homeware gurus are split between Roath and Pontcanna, but if you can’t be in two places at once, fear not, because their Twitter ties everything together.

As residents of South Wales, we’re sure Spillers Records haven’t escaped your notice.

This charming, slightly quirky café is becoming a real Welsh wonder.

They post brunch snaps from our previous point, Penylan Pantry, while not forgetting their own thing, of course. Hashtags, retweets, Facebook links and a blatant passion for the South Wales community make Beti Biggs Twitter winners in our book. twitter.com/BetiBiggs

You’ve had plenty of time to get to know them! They’ve been going strong for a long time before Twitter even burst into existence – hence the tagline ‘the oldest record shop in the world.’ Yes, the world, not just Cardiff. Proving that no matter how well-established a business is, it still benefits from modern media, Spillers have nearly 20,000 followers and 40,000 Tweets. twitter.com/spillersrecords

Novel ideas, such as its Laptop Friday scheme, in which you can use the space to work and network if you’re a freelancer; self-employed or work from home (with coffee basically on tap), set it in good stead – and of course these are promoted online. Nearly 300 Twitpics – from witty slogans to the most irresistible of their brunches – also contribute to the aesthetic prowess of Little Man Coffee Co. twitter.com/littlemancoffee

Cardiff Farmers’ Markets

I clicked on their Twitter to do this post, to be greeted with a recent Retweet from ourselves, so they’re in our good books, but would score highly either way!

Yes, they only opened last year, but the coolest pizza, burger and cocktails joint in town (it also doubles as serving an unbeatable brunch), can credit Twitter for its popularity.

We’re not alone in thinking RCMA Markets should be crowned a Welsh national treasure – their 8,500 Twitter followers suggest we’re in good company!

With a pretty commendable 45,000 followers, Coffee Barker (and their sister company Barker Tea Rooms for that matter), can partially credit good social media skills for their unofficial title as Cardiff ’s best coffee shop. Of course, their actual drinks may have something to do with this. And their décor… But either way, this is how you market an independent business. twitter.com/coffeebarker

Often found quirkily hash-tagging promos, their thousands of followers are also bound to feel the wrath of the tummy rumble thanks to their unrelentingly tempting food shots. A wrath that is only satisfied by booking that table… They also team with local food bloggers, completely nailing the whole social media experience. twitter.com/lockeandremedy

Their bio does what it says on the tin – they’re ‘the freshest local food in town’, to be enjoyed in Rhiwbina on Fridays; Roath on Saturdays, and the famous Riverside Embankment to end the weekend on a healthy high. Beautiful visuals; encouraging other local businesses and bloggers; and many of their 8,100 Tweets being retweets – this bunch know how to market, in every sense of the word. twitter.com/RCMAmarkets

Renate This timeless contemporary womenswear boutique was based in Morgan Arcade (now only online) knows the power of a good fashion blogger – often Tweeting their snaps and offering as many enthusiastic words as you can fit into 140 characters. This includes Valentine’s Day giveaways and Tweeting pics which expand beyond their clothing – but are of things like slogans which we can all relate to. Relate, renate, same difference. twitter.com/renate_store

“Be authentic, genuine and real. In other words, be yourself.”

Stardust Boutique Last but not least, it’s time for some Swansea Stardust. Having won an number of accolades for their abilities as an independent dress retailer, Stardust have quite the following – nearly 9,000 on Instagram; 2,300 on Twitter, and an incredible 17,000 on Facebook. They’re the place to go if you’re looking for a prom dress in South Wales, also stocking designer and accessories. Going above and beyond in terms of online marketing, we’re sure their blog plays a role in their average 5 star rating. twitter.com/StardustDresses

12,490 I’d be lying if I said we were quick off the mark when it comes to social media. When Facebook first started taking off, we, like most, didn’t quite understand it. I still don’t if I’m honest. I don’t get how something quite serious will get five likes but a cat compilation will get hundreds. Since then we’ve had to play catch up and, I’m proud to say, our small team has done brilliantly. We now have over 200,000 followers in our network. The fact is, Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc. are here to stay (until something better comes along) so you need to be involved. The key word here is ‘engagement’. How does your business engage with its customers (and suppliers)? In coming issues we’ll be looking more at social media and do our best to bring you some useful insights into the #darkarts (see what I did there). Meanwhile, you can join us on Facebook and Twitter and let us know how you’re doing. We’d love to know.

What do you do when you’re Russell ScottLawson and own one of Wales’ best gentlemen’s outfitters which is home to a superb selection of award-winning brands? Find even more...

AWARD-WINNING STYLE

Owner Russell Scott-Lawson boasts an enviable clientele; including sporting stars and TV personalities, who appreciate only the best brands and impeccable service. But don’t worry, anyone who steps over the threshold at Hawkes get treated like a star. We asked Russell why clients come to him in droves? “Our clients are busy people. They don’t have time to trawl the high street pulling outfits together. They want a one-stop-shop where they can find all of their favourite brands under one roof. They also need the services of a qualified tailor who can make any necessary adjustments to any garment so that it fits like a glove. They also know that if they have an event coming up and need something in a hurry, we can make it happen.”

“ On arriving at the store I was greeted and treated like a million dollars and fitted for an amazing suit.”

So what fabulous brands can we expect to see on the rails at Hawkes this spring and summer? Mayer Trousers, Eton shirts, Remix, 7 For All Mankind, Without Prejudice, Circle of Gentlemen, Holland Esq, Jeffery West Shoes, RM Williams boots, Trapper Leathers, Roy Robson to name but a few. We mentioned in our introduction that quite a few of Hawkes’ brands are award-winning and there’s no greater award in the fashion business than that afforded by Drapers which is the most admired and coveted awards in the fashion retail industry. Without Prejudice, Remix and Barbour can all boast one of these awards. Without Prejudice Without Prejudice has a clear mission statement: to champion product over brand, promote individuality over mass appeal and to never be influenced by a label alone. Without Prejudice’s unique tailoring comprises of the finest Italian fabrics; with every lining, button and thread hand selected in London. 52

“We are Without Prejudice, are you?” “Russell and the team at Hawkes have always bought WP in its purest form. By selecting the more unique and quirky pieces they offer their customers something different to the high-street and in certain cases totally individual to the store.” Alex Foley, Head of Sales Barbour This season welcomes Barbour International’s first Spring Summer collaboration with Triumph Motorcycles - one of the oldest names in motorcycling. A global success story, Triumph has long produced modern motorcycle classics alongside scramblers, urban sport and adventure bikes revered all around the world. Inspired by the company’s motorcycle heritage since 1936, Barbour International created the iconic motorcycling suit worn by racing teams across the globe in the 50s, 60s and 70s. For a true, biker inspired wardrobe, look no further than these two iconic names in the world of motorcycling.

Stephen Quinn I went into the Cardiff shop to replace a shirt I had a problem with. I phoned them up and they said bring it in and we’ll exchange it. They couldn’t apologise enough and were ultrahelpful. Sadly what used to be good service, as Hawkes provide as standard, has all but disappeared in most other shops. I have purchased there before and have always experienced top quality and service. I love the styling, designs, materials and cuts and will be returning soon. Excellent! 5 S TA R S 53

Following a massive investment, Cardiff ’s premier four star hotel, formerly The Parc is now well and truly open for business as a Jurys Inn. With all 140 bedrooms completely transformed and the hotel’s lobby, bar, restaurant areas, along with meeting and banqueting facilities set to be refurbished by the end of this month, InBusiness talks to Ben Underwood, General Manager to find out more.

Ben Underwood & Polly James, presenter of the South Wales Breakfast Show

THE JURY’S IN

Staff of Jurys Inn Cardiff, formally The Parc hotel celebrating the rebrand to Jurys Inn

When did you join the company and why? In November 2015, Jurys Inn acquired the Parc Hotel which I had been manager of for over two years but I am now delighted to be part of an evergrowing portfolio of hotels - it’s been a welcome change. What is your background? I came into the hotel sector in July 2013 following a career in Health and Fitness. I had previously run David Lloyd and Virgin Active Health Clubs. I’ve enjoyed the transition into Hotel Management immensely and look forward to a long career within the industry.

What attracted you to the role? The hotel is a four star, 130 year old, Victorian, purpose built property in the centre of Cardiff. I loved the property when I came to “mystery shop” it prior to my first interview. I had actually interviewed for the role a year before and the Managing Director at the time asked me to take a fast track role. As much as I would have liked to, at this time I couldn’t take such a risk so I turned it down and went to work for Virgin Active. A year later they approached me saying that there had been a change in senior leadership and they were now seeking to bring in people from outside the industry.

“The hotel is a four star, 130 year old, Victorian, purpose built property in the centre of Cardiff.” 56

I jumped at the chance as I had really wanted to take on a new challenge and thought the hotel was a superb opportunity, too good to miss. What type of guests are your hoping to attract? Our customer base varies greatly. During the week we attract business travellers but during the weekends this changes to couples, families and groups visiting Cardiff Castle, the Bay or just taking advantage of the great shopping in Cardiff. Cardiff is also heavily eventled with the Millennium Stadium (Principality Stadium) less than a 10 minute walk from our front steps. We are ideally located for Rugby, Concerts, International Cricket and lots of other exciting events at various venues around the city.

The Parc Hotel has been rebranded several times. How has this impacted the hotel and team working for you? Yes we’ve had two name changes from The Parc Thistle to The Parc (The Hotel Collection) and then to Jurys Inn Cardiff. But the rebrand to Jurys Inn has been somewhat different as not only has the hotel received significant investment to enhance its physical surroundings but the personal investment the group has given our individual members of staff has been second to none.

Jurys Inn Cardiff 1 Park Place, Cardiff CF10 3DN +44 161 774 2983 jurysinncardiff@jurysinns.com www.jurysinns.com

When will Jurys Inn Cardiff be fully refurbished? We should be fully complete by the end of April.

The Bhagotra family have owned Court Colman Manor since 1999. Vijay Bhagotra and his wife, Isabelle, managed the hotel until Vijay passed away in 2009. That’s when Sanjeev stepped in to continue his father’s vision.

COURT COLMAN M ANOR

What is the background of the Manor? Parts of Court Colman Manor date back to 1766, making 2016 her 250th Birthday! She has been the home for a succession of people who have guarded their privacy well but its history, to the best of our knowledge, is available in the history section of our website. Who is the current owner? I am the owner and Managing Director. I’m from Penarth but now live in Troes. I am involved in all aspects of the hotel, the face behind much of the interior design of the Manor and the instigator of the improvements recently completed. How many weddings do you cater for per year? We are very lucky to host more and more weddings year on year. In 2015, we had 85 weddings and we currently have 95 weddings booked for 2016, with more bookings still coming in. With packages available throughout the year, we are seeing more and more winter weddings, but we still have a strong demand for summer weddings.

Do you have a wedding co-ordinator and, if so, what is her name? Hannah Perry is the Wedding Co-ordinator at Court Colman Manor, working full-time on weddings and events. Do your couples have exclusive use of the Manor? Couples have exclusive use of the Manor on their big day. We feel that it is right to host one wedding at a time and understand that it is also what our brides and grooms expect from their wedding venue. Do you offer catering services? We do. We provide a range of menus for the wedding breakfast and a variety of buffets including hog roast, fish and chip cones, hot fork buffets and rustic buffets. We are proud to say that we use seasonal fruits and vegetables and local meats and dairy products throughout the hotel and our on-site, award-winning Indian restaurant, Bokhara Brasserie. Can you recommend suppliers? We can recommend all sorts of services and suppliers to our brides and grooms; from venue dressers to photographers, cake makers, bridal shops, musicians, wedding cars, florists… just ask. 60

What refurbishment work has taken place and to which areas? We are always looking to improve the Manor but the recent works have really excited both the customers and the staff. The Garden Room was looking a little tired and in need of some love. This function room is named the ‘Garden Room’ and features original floor-toceiling windows along its two exterior walls, which look out over the six acres of landscaped grounds here at the Manor. We wanted to embrace the strong tie the room has to the natural beauty outdoors, while still offering a bright and airy, functional space for brides and grooms to use during their wedding day. We had a suspended ceiling installed with beautiful new lighting to create a lovely ambience, featuring bird cage lighting, spotlights and the focal points, which are three large, modern chandeliers, nestled amongst foliage. The floor was replaced and the walls painted, with one wall featuring a ‘wall of leaves’. The new bar is the real focal point of the room, and is at its best when serving drinks by night - lit up in all its glory.

“ Court Colman Manor is perfect for making your dreams a reality.”

The room can hold 80 guests comfortably for a wedding breakfast, and is also licenced for wedding ceremonies. The Honeymoon Suite is another new delight for Court Colman brides and grooms. The room features a fabulous double jacuzzi bath set in the bedroom, in front a window that looks across miles and miles of countryside views. We are very lucky to be situated in such an idyllic location, with far reaching views from all the 30 rooms here at the Manor, but we wanted the Honeymoon Suite to really take advantage of our location. The idea is that after months of stressful seating plans and dress fittings, the bride and groom can unwind with a bottle of bubbly in the jacuzzi taking in the beauty that surrounds their wedding venue. The rest of the bedroom is opulently decorated, with one-off, custom-made furniture and a gloriously comfortable bed. The adjoining en-suite shower room is a treat in itself, with double showers and his and hers sinks.

How much money has been spent on the refurbishment? The total cost of refurbishment of the Garden Room and Honeymoon Suite is around £100,000 which we, and our guests, believe is money well spent. What makes Court Colman special as a wedding venue? Court Colman Manor is perfect for making your dreams a reality. With six acres of landscaped gardens, which feature a natural waterfall, rose walk and fish pond, guests can make the most of the tranquil, countryside location with drinks and canapés on the terrace (with exclusive use). The Manor herself is a Georgian Grade II-listed beacon with her bright-white facade glowing against the surrounding greenery. She boasts four different rooms that are licenced for wedding ceremonies of different sizes from four to 120 persons. Our fabulous wedding breakfast menus ensure no guest goes hungry, and menus and buffets can be tweaked to ensure every dietary requirement is catered for.

“ Parts of Court Colman Manor date back to 1766, making 2016 her 250th Birthday!” 61

Our passionate and dedicated wedding co-ordinator, Hannah, is on hand from your first viewing of the Manor to the last round of drinks at the end of the night. Once it comes to coats and carriages at the end of the party, guests who’d prefer to stay a little longer can rest assured that they will have a great night’s sleep in our range of bedroom types, which total 30 bedrooms in all. Six of the bedrooms have themes and are inspired by faraway lands, each of which offers a jacuzzi bath for ultimate relaxation. We are delighted to welcome guests to experience the delights that Court Colman Manor has to offer. Best foot forward!

The Football Association of Wales has signed a new two year deal with local family-owned, Cardiff based gentleman’s shoe store, The Brogue Trader, which will keep international football stars in step with fashion on occasions which require them to wear formal attire. The Brogue Trader are supplying the very best in quality shoes to the Welsh national football squad and they will ensure that the players look their very best on formal occasions for the next two years.

Chris Macnamara and Joe Allen

In European cup year, when the players will be required to attend formal functions at different tournament venues and often travel in their ‘number ones’, it is particularly important that they look and feel the part. The Brogue Trader have offered a personal fitting service and have supplied hand-made British leather Loake shoes to every member of the national squad and will continue to do so until 2018.

Something that is vitally important to an elite football team who must not only take great care in looking after their feet but need to look the part as well.

“We are a small family run business based locally here in Morgan Arcade, Cardiff and have been supplying formal shoes to the Welsh national rugby squad since 2014, but have nationwide ambitions and this new deal with the FAW is a perfect launch pad for us to raise our profile even further and to a different audience,” enthused The Brogue Trader’s Managing Director, Chris Macnamara.

The Brogue Trader are based in the beautiful Morgan Arcade in Cardiff City Centre and online, thebroguetrader.com where customers can book personal visits to take advantage of the company’s fitting service.

The Brogue Trader offers a personal fitting service to cater for all sizes.

“Once Loake Shoe-Makers showed an appetite to support us with the FAW partnership, the rest was easy and we are now proud to be able to call ourselves official suppliers to Welsh football,” said Chris.

“The Brogue Trader will ensure that the players look their very best on formal occasions for the next two years,” said FAW Head of Commercial and Marketing, Ian Davis. www.thebroguetrader.com 62

Art at the heart of new venture

Owner Lucy was delighted to invite her guests to attend a preview evening at her new Woody’s Coffee Shop venture situated above the popular Woods of Whitchurch. This event was very well attended and the highlight of the evening was the unveiling of a specially commissioned painting of the building. This quirky painting by local artist Amanda Hamilton, and the wonderful mural by Nettie Ingram are sure to be very popular. www.woodsofwhitchurch.co.uk HEREFORD

Chamber choir and Jeweller strike a chord A fine example of collaboration between small businesses and promotion of the arts on a local level in Hereford can be found in the mutually beneficial partnership of Hereford Chamber Choir and Henryka. Henryka Amber & Silver Jewellery is a British brand specialising in designing and creating amber and silver jewellery pieces, which are inspired by Britain’s wildlife. The apple, synonymous with this part of the world and the new logo of HCC caught the attention of Henryka’s owner who saw a design opportunity.

Anna commented “It was a pleasure to be asked by the Chamber Choir to design and create a piece of jewellery to resemble their logo of an apple; a piece that will fit in amongst our ‘inspired by nature’ collection very well. We look forward to growing our partnership with the choir.” A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of this piece will be donated to the Chamber Choir. www.herefordchamberchoir.org.uk www.henryka.co.uk 63

Champagne and Cartier The luxury watchmaker, Cartier, selected Cardiff to launch its new Drive de Cartier collection; only the second time a collection has been previewed outside of London in the brand’s history. To celebrate, guests from across south Wales were treated to a champagne reception at luxury jewellers, Parkhouse, St.Davids, 27 The Hayes, Cardiff. They enjoyed an exclusive preview of Cartier’s new timepieces, which were unveiled earlier this year at the annual luxury watch fair, SIHH, in Switzerland. Drive de Cartier is a masculine watch designed for the men who drive their own lives. Prices start from £4,550 and will be available to purchase from Parkhouse from May this year. On the night, female guests were also given the rare opportunity to wear a stunning £175,000 diamond necklet, which was designed and produced by Parkhouse’s parent jewellers from Edinburgh, Laing, to mark its 175th anniversary last year. The spectacular one-off necklace boasts 447 dazzling diamonds, is set in 18ct white gold, and features a dramatic double diamond drop. The work of art took nine months to create, and although many of the guests loved trying on the 175 necklet, none were tempted to make a purchase, which means it’s still for sale. www.parkhousethejeweller.com

THANK YOU Thanks for taking the time to read this edition of InBusiness magazine. InBusiness is Wales’ premier business magazine. We print 10,000 copies of each edition and cut no corners on design, production and the quality of our print. Talking about printing, we source pretty much everything locally, and over 95% of InBusiness magazine’s turnover is reinvested back into the community of South Wales. If you have a business and are interested in promoting your goods or services to an aspirational audience in South Wales then InBusiness is almost certainly right for you. P ROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS We value our advertisers. We appreciate the trust they place in us by promoting their businesses in our magazines. With our local partners, we currently publish a range of high quality quarterly titles across Wales. You can advertise your business from as little as £35 per season in this magazine. Pick-up-ability! Our magazines aren’t like other magazines. They have real pick-up appeal - in fact, they really do go like hot cakes. Quality comes first... along with the environment. We’re passionate about quality. The magazines are beautifully written and designed, and printed locally in South Wales on high quality paper (and no nasty varnishes or lamination we’re as green as green can be). Quality distribution to an affluent, aspirational audience... We distribute our magazines to over 1,000 carefully selected outlets across South Wales. We’d love to have your business on board. If you’d like to promote your business or service in our magazines, please get in touch, we’d love the opportunity to work with you.
