The Vale of Gl amorgan’s Premier Lifestyle Magazine

Vale L ife Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@valelife.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@valelife.co.uk Vale Life Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW www.valelife.co.uk 0845 130 6452

Passionate about the Vale of Glamorgan We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright Vale Life 2014. All rights reserved. Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse.

WELCOME We have been busy little bees this last few months, getting out and about, meeting lots of new independent businesses around the Vale of Glamorgan. I have lived in the Vale all my life and am constantly amazed at how many fantastic little businesses that we have to choose from, and the new ones that are springing up.

Similarly, if you’re a reader and know a business that you feel could have, or should have been featured, then please let me know. We’re always looking for the Vale’s little gems.

There’s nothing like shopping in an independent shop. The owners are passionate about their business and that really comes across in the way they engage with you, the care that they have gone to in selecting the products and service they offer. City shopping is fine and has it’s place but when you walk into an independent, they seem to care more about offering you a great product and, more importantly, a great service.

I do hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. See you again in the summer.

Jennifer Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@valelife.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

Obviously we haven’t been able to get to meet every business that we would have liked to, so if you’re a fab little café or boutique or a great gift shop, butcher, baker or candlestick maker, please get in touch – we’d love to meet you in our summer issue.

“Lovely to see the funfair back at Barry Island”

Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to Vale Life. Visit www.valelife.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

OUR CONTRIBUTORS, OUR FAMILIES, OUR FRIENDS (INCLUDING ALL THE NEW ONES WE HAVE MADE) AND OUR ADVERTISERS - WITHOUT THEM vale LIFE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. The cabin also includes a drying facility for walkers etc. to dry their equipment during their stay.

Cowbridge Cabins welcomes visitors Just one of a number of successful projects through the ‘Pride in our Farming Families’ grant scheme opens its doors to welcome visitors to the Vale this spring. Designed to accommodate the group travel and outdoor explorer markets, the purpose built log cabin offers quality accommodation at affordable prices within very easy walking distance to Cowbridge.

Jo and John Homfray developed the cabin with this in mind. All visitors will be encouraged to explore and enjoy all that Cowbridge has to offer, in particular places to eat and drink, as catering facilities at the cabin are purposely limited.

Cowbridge Cabins is just one project offering visitor accommodation supported by the ‘Pride in our Farming Families’ grant scheme. ‘Picket Pods’, The Three Golden Cups Campsite, Warren Mill Bunkhouse, Sutton Newydd Barns and Lilypot Farm Nature Reserve are just some of the projects supported through this project. Get the tribal look with World Secrets One of Spring 2014’s trends, that isnt showing any signs of stopping, is tribal fashion, and for good reason. Whether it’s brightly coloured batik or geometric tribal prints, this spring/summer’s styles are bursting with colour. If floaty boho dresses aren’t your thing, accessories can be a necessary nod to the trend without being over the top, and can be worn easily. Luckily for us, we don’t need to spend our air miles and travel half way around the world to get our fix as Alice Prichard has created an online website where we can satiate our tribal fix. Alice’s love of travel and fashion are what drove her to bring us

bags, shoes, belts and fashion accessories inspired from Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco and India. Mostly made from Kilim carpet, weaved by tribal people, expect exceptional quality and colours, all of which are timeless, these items are completely unique so you won’t find two of the same.

Residents coming together to create an allotment

Beagles Country Store For all of our readers who asked where they could get the stunning jacket pictured on the front cover of our winter issue, it was by designer Holland Cooper and is available from Beagles Country Store in Cowbridge.

A group of residents in Cowbridge have come together to create a community allotment which should be ready just time for planting their first crop of spring vegetables. They are following in the footsteps of a number of groups throughout the Vale that have received support from the Community Foodie project to turn their vision of community food growing into a reality.

Bridgend

Felicity’s launches new online website Well done to Felicity’s of Brigend for their lovely new online website. We think it looks fab! www.felicityjewellers.co.uk

They say that as you approach middle age, you value experiences more than things. I can certainly vouch for this. So when were invited to attend a cookery demonstration at The Celtic Manor, we needed no encouraging. Our group of around 40 guests met for coffee and biscuits and then Terry M’s head chef Tim McDougall and his team talked us through their seasonal menu whilst preparing a few dishes, using locally sourced produce, all of which was shown on a big screen, capturing every move. 6

We then got to know the group more over a pre-lunch drinks reception and then enjoyed a three course lunch with wine at the three AA rosette Terry M restaurant. Were we a bit daunted at sitting at a table of people we didn’t know for a meal? Yes, maybe at first, but we were lucky to be sat with four of the most delightful, interesting people which, along with the fabulous food demonstration, made for a thoroughly enjoyable day. Book now for Summer Cookery Demonstrations starting Saturday 7th June. Cost £45 01633 413 000 www.celtic-manor.com

The Celtic Manor We were en route to a family break and decided to stop off at The Celtic Manor resort for a spot of afternoon tea. We’d heard good reports, which is always a good sign. CARDIFF

Fitting furniture wins national kbb award Local business, Space Fitting Furniture of Cardiff, has been announced a winner at the biggest awards event in the kitchen and bathroom industry, the kbbreview Awards. The award, which was presented at a glittering gala dinner held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on Tuesday 4th March 2014, was won in the Kitchen Showroom of the Year category.

We made our way to The Olive Tree and Garden Room and were seated next to the window, which turned out to be a good place for rabbit spotting. We enjoyed hand-made cakes, delicate pastries, freshly baked candied cirtrus scones (served warm) with strawberry jam and clotted cream and seasonal sandwiches. A nice touch was the offering of a variety of teas, which would have been welcomed but as I was in holiday mode, I opted for the champagne! We weren’t the only ones who had heard good reports as apparently the hotel regularly caters for more than 200 guests.

They say that you meet people for a reason and that couldn’t be more true than for Andrea Evans, owner of Cyfoes Healthcare in Talbot Green when she met Rhian Burke. Since their meeting, under unfortunate circumstances, a true bond has grown, from which good things can only happen. Here Andrea tells us more.

Cyfoes Healthcare Starting Cyfoes is a big leap from nursing? It is a huge leap, but I feel I am still helping people and making them feel safe about decisions to do with their skin. Issues such as aging skin, acne, moles and excessive hair have a massive effect on peoples self esteem. Now spring has arrived it is important to get our skin sun ready.

How did you meet Rhian? It was while I was working as a staff nurse in the A&E department of our local hospital. I was part of a team of people who were looking after Rhian’s son - George. Unfortunately Rhian and Paul’s son lost his life that evening. Part of my job had been to look after Rhian and Paul during what was a very scary and emotional situation. How did that affect you? As a mother it affected me deeply. No amount of training or experience takes away the sense of overwhelming helplessness and sadness when a child dies. Some months later Rhian got in touch. When I became aware of the lack of immediate support for bereaved relatives after sudden death, I felt it was important to support Rhian and her charity anyway I could. You obviously chose nursing as you were passionate about giving back? I am passionate about nursing. Nursing is many things and has negative and positive areas. But I’ve always seen my job as simple, regardless of the reason people become patients it is my job to make them feel safe.

Your relationship with Rhian is strong then? Yes. We’ve been friends only a short time and through extraordinary circumstances but we’ve developed a very deep bond. She is a very courageous lady. What support have you given the charity? I believe it’s good to give back. I ran the Cardiff 10k last September and raised £200 for the charity and I’m also doing a cycle ride on the 30th/31st of May from Miskin to Taunton, Somerset. If anyone would like to sponsor me, my just giving page is linked to my website home page - www.cyfoeshealthcare.com also for more information about the event visit www.2wishuponastar.org

“ We’ve celebrated our first year and thankfully things are going very well. We’re building up a loyal client base from clients all over the Vale and beyond.” 8

Cyfoes is going well then? Yes, we’ve celebrated our first year and thankfully things are going very well. We’re building up a loyal client base from clients all over the Vale and beyond. Clients tell us that we’re discreet, friendly and approachable and affordable and the results speak for themselves. We offer a free, no obligation consultation on what we feel can best rejuvenate and revive all types of skin to get ready for the months ahead.

When you’re a TV personality, there is an expectancy for you to look the part. As a BBC Science and Wildlife presenter on the popular Rhys Jones’s Wildlife Patrol, Rhys certainly does make an impression, with his presenting skills and also his style. We asked Rhys where he liked to shop and why.

Wild at Heart The problem that I immediately encountered was that if I was trying to buy off the peg then suits that fitted my shoulders hung on me like a sack. Most of the suits I was trying on assumed that somebody with shoulders my size must be overweight and hence the jacket would hang shapelessly off my waist. What I like about Hawkes, is they cater for a more athletic figure. It’s no surprise that many current and former professional rugby players head straight to Hawkes knowing that their ‘V’ shaped physique will not only be accommodated, but flattered. I was being fitted for a new suit alongside Mathew Rees and Bradley Davies a few days ago, and it’s no secret that Hawkes is also a favorite haunt of Jonathon Davies. These days I wouldn’t go anywhere else when looking to purchase a new suit or jacket, Hawkes after all are known for a keen eye and first class delivery.

Where do you shop? I shop at Hawkes for both work and pleasure. I find the style impeccable with a wide range of exceptional quality jackets, shoes and suits. It’s a unique purchasing experience with the quality of the garment only matched by the professionalism, service and knowledge of the staff. How would you describe your style in and out of work? When I’m filming, I normally find myself in field clothes, so on days when I’m presenting on stage, or delivering a talk, it’s nice to turn things on their head and present a sharper look. If you are going to be working in a suit, then make sure it’s one you want to be seen in.

For me style and a fresh individual look are everything. I don’t like to blend in with the wallpaper, I like to be seen in something that people remember and positively comment on the next time they see you. What clothes do you enjoy wearing? When I’m home, I’m definitely a t-shirt and jeans type of person, but when I’m on stage, I try to dress to impress. What is it you enjoy about shopping at Hawkes? When I started presenting for the BBC, I had to make sure that I was also dressed the part. In addition to actually presenting on the television, there were also an enormous amount of appointments to keep and talks to deliver, and I was determined to look my best. 12

What do you like about your life? I love my life because it is the product and reward of hard and honest work. From humble beginnings on a council estate in Fairwater, Cardiff; from leaving school at 16; I’m now a BBC Science and Wildlife presenter and a Lecturer at Cardiff University. I don’t think I could have dreamt of being where I am now when I was a small child, and I still have to pinch myself that I’m travelling the world and presenting BBC television series that are viewed by 12 million viewers. Although perhaps nothing will ever surprise me more than being this voted 49th sexiest man in Wales! I’m pretty sure Hawkes also deserve a big thank you for that one! Hawkes

Sarah Davies came up with her business idea whilst reading an inspiring article about women who had set up their own successful businesses. Taking an opportunity that had arisen and the fact that Sarah had always loved working with flowers she decided there and then to enrol onto a floristry course with a Flower School in Bath. Now she has a flourishing business.

H alcyon Flowers

We caught up with Sarah to find out more. Sarah explained that choosing the company name wasn’t easy. You need a name that describes you and your business product. Halcyon Days are peaceful and calm, which is something I am aiming to achieve with my life and I hope this is reflected in the bespoke floral arrangements I offer. Halcyon Flowers was born! What is your background and how did you get into floristry? My background is varied. I have worked and volunteered for various organisations here and abroad, primarily in Human Resources, Administration and with charities working and helping young people. I have always loved working with flowers as a hobby and I have my Aunty Mary to thank for that. I have been lucky, I have taken a window of opportunity to turn a hobby into a career.

What services do you offer? I refer to myself as an Event Florist. I source the flowers for each individual event and provide bespoke arrangements for all sorts of occasions: weddings, anniversaries, private parties, charity events and sympathy flowers. I can also supply arrangements to restaurants and hotels - the possibilities are endless. Although I normally cater for special ocassions and events I do offer a pre-order service for luxury bouquets and arrangements for Valentines Day, Mothering Sunday, Easter and Christmas. Who are your customers and where do they come from? Currently my customers are based in the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff. Due to the location of my business, on the beautiful heritage coast in Llantwit Major, I can cover all of South Wales. How do you normally get business? My business comes through various avenues: my website, facebook, word of mouth, exhibiting at wedding fayres, advertising with local businesses and networking all mixed in with lots of determination and sheer hard work!

“ Ultimately, it’s about making people smile.” 14

What do you enjoy about your job? For me it’s about making people smile. It sounds a cliché but I do get a buzz from it, what could be better? I love meeting and listening to the people who contact me. I love the drive to the flower market in the early hours even when it’s frosty! I love selecting the flowers and bringing them home and seeing the riot of colour as they all sit in their buckets waiting to be turned into something glorious. You can think of it as starting with a blank sheet of paper and turning it into a beautiful picture. I must admit, when I am working with the flowers I do find myself singing. I can’t help it, something kicks in and away I go. To find out how Halcyon Flowers can help you or your business contact Sarah on: 07706 076 929 enquiries@halcyonflowers.co.uk www.halcyonflowers.co.uk facebook.com/halcyonflowers Sarah will also be exhibiting at the following wedding fayres in 2014: Bryngawr Hotel & Spa, Bridgend - 18th May Fonmon Castle - 13th July

Make your new kitchen work harder, with clever cupboards that maximise your space, whatever the size of your kitchen.

Clever Storage

Solutions

For many people buying a kitchen, choosing one which can offer the most storage space possible is an absolute top priority. Here at Sigma 3 Kitchens, we have a number of clever storage units which maximise even the most awkward of spaces. Regardless of the size of your kitchen, we can ensure that you have all the cupboard space you could ever want. Working with our kitchen designers you can choose which units best fit your lifestyle, and the shape and size of your room. Take our innovative ‘Magic Corner’ or ‘Le Mans’ units. The two shelves make use of the entire corner space and the clever sliding mechanism enables the shelves to be pulled out all the way, giving easy access to those things stored even at the very back of the cupboard.

And wouldn’t it be great if you could see all your weekly shopping in one place, knowing exactly what you’ve got left or need to use up? Our extra wide drawers are the deepest and widest available in the UK, and can hold twice the normal capacity of a standard drawer and could hold all your tinned and boxed food shopping in one place. A 3 drawer cabinet can take a load of up to 585kg – that’s over 1,000 tins of beans! We have even more clever storage solutions with several styles of drawers, baskets and larders for you to choose from. With convenient compartments of varying sizes and shapes, all your food, crockery, and pots and pans can be tidied away out of sight, leaving your worktops clear and free of clutter. 16

We have even more invaluable solutions such as our ‘Portable Plate Stacking’ for storing and transporting those awkwardly shaped plates, and our ‘Internal Refuse Solution’ to easily separate your rubbish from recycling. So come by one of our showrooms and see if we can revolutionise the organisation of your kitchen. sigma3.co.uk

Blush Getting Ready For Spring

According to the weather forecasters, we’re in for a great summer with lots of sunshine on the way. That means we can lose the thick tights and boots and show a bit more flesh. We asked Holly Bennett, owner of BLush Beauty Boutique in Park Crescent, Barry what top three beauty treatments we should all be booking to get our bodies sunshine ready.

I’m thinking of ditching the boots and getting my sandals out but my toes are a bit hobbit-like from constantly wearing tights/socks, what would you suggest? You’ve got two options. Firstly Shellac, the nail-friendly solution which is taking gel to the next level -- no sculpting or filing, just thin coats of polish on your natural nail, with a brief time for curing under a UV lamp between every coat. This promises smudge-proof nail color that lasts for weeks without chipping. Or you can get yourself Minxed like the A list celebrities such as Beyoncé and Victoria Beckham. The Minx pedicure line includes designer styles, personalised graphics and sparkling metallics. Made of flexible film, Minx gives you completely customised toe nails that look fantastic and last for weeks. Minx is applied to your natural toe nails and, as it is a film, there is no smudging or chipping so your nails will be looking great for longer. Both of these options can be used on feet and toes.

My eyelashes are really sparse. I’ve seen a lot of celebs wearing falsies but I can’t get the hang of applying these. Help! Your best solution is Mink individual eyelash extensions which are adhered one by one to your existing eyelashes. They are almost weightless, feel and look completely natural, and are available in different lengths, thickness and curls to create your desired effect. Choice of eyelash extension designs range from a completely natural (although enhanced) look, a sassier sexy look, or the ultimate glamorous look. Whichever look is decided upon, the lashes will add fullness and really open up your eyes making an incredible difference to the way you look and feel about yourself. During our consultation, we will discuss your lifestyle and how you want your lashes to give you the best option for you.

“ Minx gives you fantastic, completely customised toe nails.” 19

I’ve overplucked my eyebrows and now they’re looking sparse. What can I do? HD brows were made for you! They are an unique treatment for the ultimate well-groomed, high definition eyebrows. This eyebrow shaping procedure transforms the way you look and, more importantly, how you feel. Unlike other eyebrow treatments that use a ‘one shape fits all’ technique, we use HD Brows to assess face shape and colouring before creating a bespoke brow, tailored exclusively for our clients. If you do anything this spring, I would say HD brows are a priority as they define the face and can instantly knock years off. Sally Evans opened Boutique Box in Talbot Green earlier this year. Little did she think it would take off as well as it has. We chat to Sally to find out more.

Boutique Box How long has Boutique Box been established? Boutique Box opened its doors on 27th January 2014 - so not long really, however it has taken off immediately and we have been so grateful for the amount of support we have had from all of our customers, friends and associates. What do you offer your clients? We offer ladies occasion wear in sizes 10-24. Ladies of all ages are welcome. We also offer hats and fascinators, shape wear underwear, shoes and handbags and accessories. There’s also free parking which is a bonus these days. Why Talbot Green? Location, location, location! What a huge decision. Talbot Green has so much to offer with easy access to the Valleys and the M4 on the doorstep. Customers have the convenience of free parking and no traffic jams, which takes away the stress of shopping. When I considering where to open, I was looking for a vibrant, up and coming village and Talbot Green was the obvious choice.

Who runs Boutique Box? I love spending every minute in the shop so I am here full time. Customers generally look to deal with the owner of small businesses. That’s the beauty of shopping from independents, the personal service and knowing your customers individual needs is paramount.

What brands do you stock? Boutique Box prides itself in stocking brands which are unusual and give a more individual look. Ella Boo and Daisy May are fabulous - great cuts, well priced and younger than the more traditional occasion wear brands. We then have plenty of cruise wear, prom dresses, ball gowns, accessories, shoes, bags, even umbrellas – it’s surprising how much we can offer in one shop really! What occasions do you cover? If customers are going to a special occasion, whether it’s a party, dinner, holiday, mother-of- the-bride, the races, prom, we are able to offer an outfit which will make them feel great.

Why do customers come to Boutique Box? Customers are generally coming to us because they are looking for an outfit which is a little bit different. Our stock comes from all over Europe so we are able to offer customers something they would not get on the high street. There’s nothing worse than arriving at a special occasion and someone else has the same outfit on – it’s a ladies worst nightmare! Where do your customers come from? Customers are travelling to us from West Wales, Gwent - even Nottingham! Surprising how quickly the word of mouth travels - we only opened in January. Are you pleased with things so far? The shop is much busier than we anticipated which is fantastic - I am a very grounded person though, so I realise that to keep my customers happy, I have to keep offering something different. This is keeping me super busy, but I love it! Boutique Box 22 Stuart Terrace, Talbot Green CF72 8AA 07712 448864 www.boutique-box.co.uk Follow on Facebook and Twitter

Vale of Glamorgan residents are being asked to think about fostering a child by their local council, which says it has a shortage of foster carers.

Could You Foster?

David and Kay

The Vale of Glamorgan Council aims to keep foster children in the Vale, rather than finding placements in other counties. When a child moves into foster care outside their own county, they leave their family, their friends, their school and their support network.

The Vale council’s fostering team welcomes applications from people from all walks of life, whether you are interested in providing foster care for respite, emergency, short-term or longterm placements.

As part of the campaign, the council appointed foster carer, Kay, as one of its ‘fostering ambassadors’ for the Vale. Kay, who fosters with her husband David, said: “My husband and I made that call to fostering services more than 35 years ago and have never once regretted it. “Every child deserves the chance to have a happy and fulfilled life and some children are not able to live with their own families for different reasons.

What are the requirements to be a foster carer? n Do you have at least one spare bedroom, a stable lifestyle and access to transport? n Are you a great communicator, with patience and tolerance? n Have you got energy and motivation? n Do you have time and commitment? n Can you empathise with a child and manage challenging behaviour? If the answer is yes, the council’s fostering team would love to hear from you.

“Foster care has a huge impact on a child, whether it’s for a few weeks or for years. As a foster carer, you have the opportunity to give a child happy memories for a lifetime, no matter what has happened before, or what may happen later in their lives. For my husband and I, it has been a privilege.”

“ The council is looking for people willing to provide foster care to siblings, teenagers or children with disabilities.” 24

“ We’ve fostered babies, siblings, teenagers. We’ve had some terrific fun and the children can be so funny. ” What do foster carers receive? n Dedicated support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year n Competitive rates of pay n Comprehensive training leading to professional qualifications n Access to monthly support forums, where you can share experiences with other foster carers n Support from our fostering team, including your own allocated supervising social worker

Do you live in the Vale of Glamorgan? Could you foster? If you’re thinking about fostering call 01446 729600 fostercare@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk www.valeofglamorgan.co.uk

We’ve had positive reports from the social workers and the school, so it seems beneficial to our foster child as well. It’s very encouraging. I would say there is a great deal of satisfaction when things go well. It’s nice to have kids running around the house. We feel like we are giving a child a second opportunity.”

Charles and Gill Charles says, “We were approved in October and started our first placement in January. It’s been very good so far. It’s not all plain sailing and we didn’t expect it to be. I’ve discovered I’ve got a lot more patience than I realised!” “There are ups and downs but above all it’s very rewarding.

“The team has been very supportive. Our social worker has been very helpful with any worries we’ve had and our foster child’s social worker has been helpful too. We’re happy with the training provided and have attended the foster care forum meetings and support group. Speaking to other foster carers is very useful because, although the training is good, there’s nothing like getting practical advice based on someone’s first-hand experience. But I don’t think anything really prepares

you or lets you know what it’s going to be like. It’s along the lines of what I expected and the Vale council has matched us up very well to the child who is now with us. We also had a planned handover from another foster carer and were given lots of information.” “The advice I would give to anyone thinking of fostering is firstly to talk to someone who is already doing it. We spoke to a friend who was fostering and she encouraged us to make a call. We initially approached a private agency, but they recommended that we contacted the Vale council, who then sent someone out to talk to us about it.” “I found the experience challenging but positive. We needed to find out if fostering was right for us, but also whether we were suitable for fostering.”

John and Cath “We’ve been fostering for about nine years and have had about 12 shortterm placements and 40 respite placements. “We started fostering through a private agency, but went 18 months without having any placements. The Vale council was recruiting for foster carers at the time, so we got in touch with their fostering team. We haven’t looked back since. We have always had placements, the support has been excellent, training courses are regularly provided, there are support groups and monthly forums and an emergency number available 24/7.” “The Vale’s fostering team has been great and we’ve been with the Vale for just over five years.”

Kay and David “My husband David and I have been fostering for about 35 years. We did respite care initially and we’ve been fostering children with special needs for about 25 years.” “My sons were five and three and our other son wasn’t even born when we started fostering. It’s all he’s ever known and he’s never complained. I think it has brought out the best in all of them, they’ve always been so understanding and laid back.” “We moved a lot with my husband’s job, so we’ve fostered in a few different areas. We moved here in 1988 and have done the majority of our fostering with the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

“We wanted to make a real difference to children and young people’s lives. We had no qualifications, apart from bringing up our own three children, but we felt we had the right skills and qualities to foster and, most, importantly, a spare room.” “It has been the most rewarding and challenging experience of our lives.” The social services people are always there on the end of the phone if you need them and I know I can contact the emergency duty team if there is any serious problem, they’ve been very good and very amenable.” “All children are delightful and when they get their first tooth or smile for the first time or say their first word, it’s very special. But with a child with special needs it’s fantastic. The rewards are immeasurable.” “Over the years we’ve fostered babies, siblings, teenagers and children with special needs. I enjoyed fostering siblings because you see how much they depend on each other. And fostering teenagers is a challenge, but a very welcome one. We’ve had some terrific fun and the children can be so funny.” 25

“If you decide to foster, it is very important the whole family unit is dedicated to it. There will be challenging times, but the experience of seeing a child build confidence and self-esteem and move on to a brighter future after you’ve put all the good work in is so rewarding and fulfilling.”

“Sometimes we support the child and their family through contact sessions. Some of their stories are heart-breaking and I would never ever judge any parent. But we’ve heard so many sad stories. One little boy’s earliest memory was being wrapped up in a blanket by a policeman and taken away. “A lot of people do fostering these days as a career. But I just had an overwhelming need to help children. Every child deserves the chance to have a happy and fulfilled life. When I told my husband I wanted to foster, he didn’t flinch and has always been very supportive.” “You’ve got to be committed. There’s a child’s life and future at stake. Foster care has a huge impact on that child, whether it’s for a few weeks or for years. For us, it’s been a privilege.”

Best Vintage shop in Wales

What should we be buying this season? It’s always difficult to know. We check in with Cathy Evans, owner of the popular Penarth boutique Ginger’s to find out.

Ginger’s What’s new this season? I’m so excited about this season as we’re seeing the diversity of colours – pastel linens in lilacs, mint pinks, blues and corals which give a soft, pretty and feminine spring/summer looks. What is the one key item we should be buying this summer? I don’t there is just one but what I do love are the Lindi’s showerproof short raincoats and jackets, particularly the beautiful short pink print one. I’ve got my trench coat (just in case), but what about other summer staples? This season the list is endless but I’d definitely be advising my clients to go for super patterned tunics, great cut-offs and our lovely cotton dresses. So should we be following the current trends? I would always advise that the best thing is to wear what suits you and what you feel comfortable in, rather than following a particular trend. Nowadays fashion is so diverse – just be yourself! What do you think keep customers coming back to Ginger’s? I believe it’s because Ginger’s is a warm and friendly shop with staff that help create a relaxed atmosphere. It’s very important that we carry a variety of stock, making it worthwhile for customers to visit us regularly to find ‘that little something different’ which the High Street doesn’t offer.

There have been lots of changes to St Donats Arts Centre recently – all for the better we’re glad to report. Here we chat to Karen Davies, Commercial Director about what we can expect over the spring/ summer months.

Eventful! Things have changed at St Donats over the last year, can you tell us a little more about that? The major change is that St Donats Arts Centre is now part of UWC Atlantic College and as such continues to offer a wide range of arts and community events to existing and new customers alike.

We understand that the cinema is coming back to St Donats, how did this come about? We’re delighted that cinema has returned to St Donats Arts Centre and this has been made possible as a result of grant funding from Creative Rural Communities which has enabled us to introduce new digital equipment with HD and surround sound. Our current offering is one matinee and one evening performance per month but we hope to increase screenings as its popularity grows.

“ We are really excited about the events we have scheduled for Spring/Summer 2014.”

What type of films will you be showing? Since our cinema re-launch in January 2014 we have targeted a wide audience, showing a variety of different films. Upcoming films include the Oscar nominated ‘Captain Phillips’ starring Tom Hanks and the classic Billy Wilder film, ‘Some Like It Hot’. Our focus is to offer an eclectic mix of old and new that you won’t necessarily find at your local multiplex.

What are the key events for spring/ summer? We are really excited about the events we have scheduled for Spring/Summer 2014, kicking off with TV’s gardening guru Charlie Dimmock talking about her inspiring gardening and acting career on Thursday 29th May and for this show the ticket includes access to the Tudor gardens of St Donat’s Castle before the show begins; feel free to bring a picnic! Other highlights include the return of Beyond the Border Storytelling Festival, the Webb Sisters on 11th July (fresh from their recent tours as Leonard Cohen’s backing singers) and an outdoor performance of the Pirates of Penzance on the top lawn of St Donat’s Castle, to name but a few. 36

What do you think brings people to St Donats? I think the beautiful coastal setting and historic surroundings, along with the broad programme of events, are the elements that most attract people to St Donats Arts Centre. And this year for the first time, we will be hosting a food and drink festival on Saturday the 25th October – look out for further details over the coming months. St Donats Arts Centre really is a breathtaking venue like no other!

How does someone go from a career in criminology to make-up artist? That’s what I asked Jess Carmell, owner of one of the latest shops to open in Penarth, Amorio. Basically, it’s following your dream says Jess. Here she tells us more about...

A morio Jess wearing fabulous hair piece

So criminology. Tell us more about that. I studied very hard during my schooling years, gaining a place at Swansea University to study Criminology and Criminal Justice. However, I’ve always loved make-up and decided to go down the creative rather than the academic route, so I went to London and completed an intense make-up artist course, gaining a diploma. What made you want to open a shop? I come from a family with a business background and I think when you’re in that environment, it has a nature/nurturing effect. What does Amorio offer? Amorio Cosmetics offer largely mineral-based make-up products. The quality and pigmentation is unbelievable. It’s kind to all skin types, gives full coverage and also stays fresh all day long. We also offer accessories with a good selection of bags and jewellery basically a one-stop-shop for girls. Perfect for gifts.

Why Amorio? A lot of people ask me that! I can thank my boyfriend for the name. He kept moaning (and still does!) that all I did was play with make-up and that I didn’t give him any attention. He said I was basically having an affair with make-up. As Amorio directly means ‘love affair’ in Italian and Italian is the language of love – Amorio was born. What do you offer your customers? I do make-up for weddings, fashion shows, Miss Wales’ events, airbrushing and special occasion make-up. I offer make-up lessons, day/night make-up, airbrush make-up, bridal, bridesmaids and mother of the bride make-up. Do you follow the latest trends? I regularly attend day courses to update my skills and knowledge. I devour magazines and celebrity styles to keep up with the latest trends, styles and colours, so that I can stay at the top of my game and pass this knowledge onto my clients.

“ I do make-up for weddings, fashion shows and special occasions.” 39

How is Amorio doing since it opened not long ago? Fantastic. I am overwhelmed by the response. My customers have been so supportive and I love getting to know each and every one of them on a personal level, creating a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Being able to transform a woman by good quality make-up and the techniques that I have acquired is a real joy. Bridal make-up especially is gratifying as every woman wants to look her best on her big day and, knowing that I’ve played a part in that, is hugely satisfying. I am also offering hair pieces which can transform your hair in seconds. You can take out the third pic on right hand side to fit this in.

Forget the Gym, the garden is the place to be if you want physical ‘and’ mental fitness.

Let’s Get Physical

According to medical research for the over 60’s you can reduce your chances of having a stroke by 27% if you potter about in the garden and reduce your overall chances of dying early by up to 30%. I am not just aiming this at the over 60’s, if you are younger than 60 then carry on doing the gym thing because it shows that you realise that you should be doing something about your general wellbeing. We all need to make a little more time to look after ourselves and the garden is the perfect place to do it. Apart from the obvious physical improvement to our bodies that gardening can bring, raking, digging etc the bigger benefit is mentally. Gardening has a wonderful effect of destressing, you can put the worries of the world to one side, you can forget the pressures of time and money and concentrate on simpler calmer issues. Most forms of gardening can produce an instant result, take weeding for example, you don’t have to wait for it you just do it, and instantaneously the satisfying result is there in front of you.

“ Gardening is one of the most easiest forms of mental therapy that exists.”

Gardening is one of the most easiest forms of mental therapy that exists, just being outside has a positive result. When we travel we want a window seat, we want hotels with a balcony and a sea view, the simple feeling of warmth or even cold air on your skin can revitalise you and make you feel a different person. If we can combine the mental destressing therapy with the physical effect of hard work then we are truly in the right place. Start thinking of an aim and a reason and we can combine growing your own food with eating more healthily. Plants have always been used for their medicinal purposes and obviously for flavouring and eating and we all know the benefits of gardening as a therapy. On a recent trip to Cuba I accompanied a friend to one of their hospitals, on entering the front door we were greeted not by a nurse or a receptionist but by a fully qualified doctor. We were treated very quickly to stop the conditioning from worsening and any anxiety from forming and the treatment was first class. Another incredible few facts was that the hospital was also a National Art Gallery so it was always full of visitors and obviously well decorated, but the biggest surprise of all, its gardens (not grounds) were tended by the patients, so there is our horticultural therapy, and the plants 43

that were growing there were all used either in the kitchens or to treat medical conditions in the hospital, so there’s our alternative medicine. Cuba leads the world in heart surgery and it seems that horticultural therapy is definitely the way to go. Our country isn’t poor enough yet to adopt this ‘so called’ third world culture but we can all apply it to our own gardens and lifestyles.

We’re now going to share with you a secret, which you will thank us for later and that’s Country Timbers and The Potting Shed in Llantrisant. I hate the expression ‘jewel in the crown’ but on this occasion it’s fitting. I chatted with shop owner Jane Prichard to uncover some more secrets.

The Potting Shed

What came first? The timber yard was established 28 years ago, Hugh(my husband) bought the business five years later from a friend who was moving to farm over in France, we then re-named it County Timbers. The yard ran alongside Hugh’s farming and agricultural shed construction. What services does Country Timbers offer? Country Timbers sell fencing, decking, timber treatment, garden furniture, timber sheds, stonework, tools and hardware to name but a few! The boys on the yard are always willing to offer help and advice on our customer’s DIY projects, and they construct furniture or fences on location if our customers are unable to do so themselves. People can trust us as a family business with old fashioned values and skilled workmen.

When did The Potting Shed come into being and how? I used to have a catering business when the children were little, but it was a difficult business to run when you have three children growing up! Eventually I had to give it up to nurse my father and bring up the children. I had always dreamed of having a shop so Hugh offered to extend Country Timbers to build one. We realised there was a gap in the market in south Wales for a shop to sell good quality furniture, gifts and country living products, but at affordable prices. If people only have £5 to spend, they will find something lovely in The Potting Shed. We have stock arriving every day, keeping people interested and the shop unique.

People want traditional products and service, like the ‘good old days’ and we hope we provide this. we sell something for every event, weddings, christenings, birthdays and anniversaries. The Potting Shed has evolved into a one-stop shopping experience. Why do customers come to you? We gift wrap everything for free, making it especially easy for men who don’t usually like shopping! Our staff are friendly, will often help with tricky decisions and come up with new ideas. We have a lot of Welsh products like our Welsh slate items, many of which are exclusive to The Potting Shed, these are especially popular for wedding presents, new home gifts or for people moving away to a different country.

“ People want traditional products and service, like the ‘good old days’.” 44

The shop has ample car parking which is flat and safe for disabled or elderly customers. People often come to The Potting shed for the day, they shop, have lunch or afternoon tea, and perhaps shop again! We want to make shopping here an experience rather than a chore. How many staff do you employ? At the moment we employ around twelve people, a number of which have been with us from the start and are local to the area. We couldn’t do it without them, they are brilliant. When did the tea rooms come into being? Many of our customers travel a good distance to The Potting Shed, and we used to get daily requests for an area to drink coffee, even if it was just a selfservice machine. The shop was so busy that we ruled it out.

One day on our travels we saw an antique stain glass window originally from a plantation house in Iran. We loved it so much that we bought it and then designed the tearooms with the window in mind! The Tea Rooms is called ‘Alice’s Tea Cup’, based around the mad hatters tea party in Alice in Wonderland. So in the end we ended up with a tea rooms, not a coffee machine!

Have you any plans for the future? We would like to be able to keep sourcing new produce - and a holiday!

The Tearooms have made a huge difference to the shop, it makes it more of a relaxed place to bring family and friends. What makes the tearooms special? The aim was to make to the tearooms homely, with a log fire, comfortable furniture and newspapers to read. It’s an escape, a place for the nonshoppers to be whilst the shoppers shop! The cakes are homemade by a friend, Myf Edwards, and are delicious! 45

There’s a hint of excitement in the air. Spring has definitely sprung, growth in the garden is gathering pace and the arrival of spring blossom is sure to put a smile on our faces.

Spring Into Action

We may have already seen a hint of sunshine and, if you listen to the latest weather reports, we’re due for a heat wave this spring/summer. As we all know too well, forecasters’ predictions are never set in stone. We live in Wales after all! Nevertheless, we must remain optimistic of what might come in spring and early summer and, when it arrives, you want to be ready for a life outdoors.

This is nothing new to StyleGardens in Wenvoe, as they have been patiently planning and preparing for their customers. You can be sure of some great new products such as the Kettler garden furniture, which is already selling really well. Not surprisingly, as they have also been appointed agents for the clearing ranges which have up to 70% off recommended retail price. They have had a bit of an expansion to their shrub area with lots more shrubs available.

There’s no time for resting on your laurels when it comes to garden maintenance, if the anticipation of enjoying a garden that has burst into life on a sunny day excites you, or if you crave all year round colour and interest in your garden, then you had better start to make things happen (if you haven’t already).

“You can be sure of some great new products such as the Kettler garden furniture.” 46

These, along with their vast choice of plants and trees, really make StyleGardens the garden centre of choice for people in the Vale, Cardiff and beyond. It really is a one-stop-shop as they have an increasing family of concessions which means there’s plenty of treats in store for pets, aquatic fans, camping and outdoor enthusiasts, equine aficionados, and those seeking the latest fashions for the home, garden and wardrobe.

What gardening tips do they suggest this May? n Planting hanging baskets. n Moving plants outside the greenhouse n Sowing pots of delicate herbs such as basil for the windowsill n Buying beddings plants such as petunias n Planning to plant tender vegetable crops such as runner beans and courgettes n Bank holiday barbecues – have you got enough gas and a barbecue-set fit for the job? n Relaxing in the garden – are your loungers and garden furniture ready for action? Instant gardening StyleGardens take on the hard work for you. For instant colour and dramatic displays, just choose a pot, set a budget and they will do the rest for you. What you’ll have is a colour container full of seasonal plants that you can take away, after relaxing with a snack in the Coffee Shop while it’s being prepared. Prices are very reasonable and include the pot!

If you fancy a show of large specimen plants in containers, don’t let the size put you off, as they offer a planting and delivery service. For general gardening advice, or to find out especially what should be planted when, just ask on of the friendly team - they’ll be happy to help. And don’t forget, you’ll need a good pair of secateurs, gardening gloves, tools and compost.

Angela Mahoney has a real passion for sewing and for teaching others to sew, so it made sense that when a shop became available in New Road, Porthcawl, Angela decided to open her shop.

A ngela’s House

Not only does Angela’s House offer sewing lessons, it also provides uniforms and accessories for a selection of schools in the area. We chat to Angela to find out more. Why did you decide to combine the selling of uniforms and a sewing shop? It made perfect sense to me as I am often asked to embroider children’s names into items of a uniform. A lot of mums don’t like the mass produced labels that you can get and also a lot of children don’t like them because they itch their skin. An embroidered name looks so much better. I also embroider school logos onto items. Which schools do you cover? We offer general items of school clothing such as white polo shirts, white shirts, black, navy and grey trousers and skirts, socks, bags, coats and much more but I am lucky to be offering uniforms for Nottage Primary, Newton Primary, Porthcawl Primary, St Clare’s School and am the new sole supplier of St Johns School.

“ An embroidered name looks so much better. I also embroider school logos onto items.”

How are the adults sewing lessons going? Very well. Sewing, knitting and embroidery are pastimes that, thankfully, are coming back into fashion. It’s a great way to de-stress, meet with friends and create something beautiful. The classes I offer are suitable for beginners, those who have a slight knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and those who just need their confidence re-building. Participants can bring their own sewing machines or they can use the ones here in the shop.

You also offer personalised wedding items? Yes, with it being one of the most important days of any woman’s life we help make the little things count. We can personalise wedding serviettes with the bride and groom’s initials or wedding dates. We offer wedding dress personalising, ring cushions, personalised gifts and anything that will make the day personal to the couple, such as silk and velvet bottle bags with beautiful tassels, handmade to colour co-ordinate the day.

How long do the courses last? The courses are in six week blocks from 7pm until 9pm and include all materials and use of equipment. The children’s courses are popular too then? Yes, they learn how to use a sewing machine, how to hand stitch including embroidery stitches and how to cut out a simple pattern. They get to make a pin cushion, a needle case, a tote bag, a book cover and a small cushion. The courses again are booked in blocks of six and include use of sewing machines, fabric, sewing supplies, scissors, tools and threads and a project folder to keep patterns and instructions in. The lessons are from either 10am until 11am or 11.30am until 12.30am. I can also offer one-to-one courses.

The hilltop town of Llantrisant is rightfully enjoying the title of “the jewel in the Crown”, largely due to a collection of unique, independent shops. We chat to one shop owner Gill Garnham to find out more.

The Butchers Arms Gallery

What’s your background Gill? After leaving art college, I went to Florence, Italy to study picture restoration. I then came back to Llantrisant and opened Hill Top Studio – an art and restoration studio – the first arty, gift shop in Llantrisant. I met my husband Noel in the shop and we married a year later.

The Dairy The dairy is full of bling and costume jewellery for all occasions - tiaras for proms and weddings, jewellery for a night out, fabulous gifts, bags and scarves. Upstairs is girl heaven in pink with fairy dresses and accessories wings, wands and shoes! This little shop is every woman and young girl’s dream.

What was Noel’s background? Noel made wooden toys and opened Traditional Toys, selling old fashioned, well-made toys, some of which he made. Twenty years ago this August, we bought the building which is now The Butchers Arms Gallery to live in and decided to open it as a family business. Noel’s two daughters worked there when they were bringing up their young children. We then opened The Dairy ten years ago. Sam wanted her own shop, so she opened Pink Zebra seven years ago. Sarah went on to be a teacher. Now the grandchildren help out – it’s a real family concern. The Butchers Arms Gallery Downstairs The Butchers is a treasure trove of gifts, books, stylish ceramic ware and beautiful sterling silver jewellery. People come from miles to stock up on the much sought after Emma Bridgewater and Pip Studio products, especially as they have a 20% loyalty card when you’ve spent £100 on these products. Upstairs, The Butchers offers sensational sandwiches, great coffee and a mouth-watering array of homemade cakes and holds a special affection in the hearts of the Vale’s professional ladies who lunch.

Where do your clients come from? We have our regulars but we’re lucky to have customers from all over south Wales, Swansea and West Wales, Bath and Bristol. Word gets around! We’re lucky that we have two car parks to accommodate a large number of vehicles, one at the top of the hill (Swan Street) and another at Gwaun Ruperra, down the hill, passed the Butchers on the right hand side.

“Downstairs is a treasure trove of gifts.” What makes your offerings unique? Every gift shop owner will tell you that we all go to trade fairs but, as a family, we all have a very good eye in spotting things that are unique and individual.

“We all have a very good eye in spotting things that are unique and individual.” Pink Zebra Pink Zebra may be a mecca to Yankee Candles, as it’s one of the largest stockists of these popular candles in the Vale but it has so much more to offer from bath bombs and fizzers, funky jewellery, clothing, bags and purses. I could go on but I’d run out of ink. Let’s just say, it’s easy to see why this shop has a devout following of women who call in on a regular basis to see the latest additions. 64

Beyond the Border, one of the world’s leading storytelling festivals, is back again at St Donat’s Castle, near Llantwit Major, from 4-6 July, encompassing storytelling, but poetry, music, singing, theatre, circus, puppets, films and much more…

Beyond The Border

When we think of St Donats Castle, the word ‘fairy-tale’ does tend to come to mind. And every two years that description becomes particularly pertinent, when the Vale’s beautiful castle becomes the setting for the retelling of real fairy tales and legends. Year-round, St Donats castle is home to UWC Atlantic College, an international residential school with 350 students from over 90 different countries, famed for its International Baccalaureate experience. But for one weekend of the year, its ordered gardens are transformed by a sea of brightly coloured tents filled with the world’s finest storytellers and its paths are trodden by two thousand eager audience members, who come to hear some of the most remarkable and memorable tales humanity has produced. This is Beyond the Border - the leading international festival of storytelling in the UK, and with a worldwide reputation.

Beyond the Border was founded at St Donats Arts Centre in 1993, and is now celebrating its 21st birthday. For all that time it has dedicated itself to exploring and celebrating the world’s rich heritage of oral storytelling. From 4-6 July this summer, people from across the globe will gather to the castle for this festival on our doorstep, to experience the huge range of stories and artistic experiences on offer. This year explores themes ranging from the stories and music of Scandinavia, Dylan Thomas at 100, African Music and Story, Celtic Myth, Memories of WW1 and much more. Storytelling and music goes on from dawn until dusk across nine different venues, with over a hundred performances. In between the bursting programme of stories, there are numerous ways for audience members to relax, be fed and entertained with a bustling marketplace of craft stalls and workshops, as well as a wide range of food available, and a famous real ale bar. 72

It’s a wonderful way to experience a local treasure, to combine affection for our stunning coastline with an enriching artistic experience which unlocks doors into other worlds. Take P art Tickets are on sale now, with special discounts for people in the CF61 area. PLUS special £5 tickets for opening performance on Friday 4 July. Go Physio

Go Physio Ltd 07775 777 807 nicky@go-physio.com www.go-physio.com Follow on Facebook and Twitter @GoPhysioLtd

With the sincere hope that our dreadful winter is now behind us, we at Go Physio are advocating a positive and purposeful approach to exercise and activity during Spring. Whatever our passions or drive, activity and exercise can help to nurture our whole selves allowing us to feel good. According to Plato, ‘Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it’. We are constantly advised that exercise is good for us, but when injury occurs it’s often difficult to know if movement is good or bad, which can lead us to avoid it altogether. In our physiotherapy clinics we see a wide range of clients, all ages and from different backgrounds with various conditions that can hinder lifestyle and wellbeing. Our clients may be hoping to return to high level sport, return to exercise class, or be able to manage their garden and day to day activities, but whatever the motivation there is a common need to feel secure in how best to go about returning to this after injury. As physiotherapists part of our role is to use our knowledge to advise, guide and offer practical movement advice, which will depend on the symptoms and stage of the injury, but also the outcome needs of the individual. This creates a trust and pathway forward, focusing on recovery of a balanced physical and therefore emotional self.

This was certainly the case for a 53 year old female I recently saw in one of our physiotherapy clinics. She presented with a three month history of low back pain which was aggravated by sitting more than 30 minutes, standing and bending. General day to day chores and driving were difficult and the client’s desk based work was also affected. Cycling with her family and gardening were both enjoyable pastimes for the client but were very much off her agenda as she was anxious that these would make her symptoms worse. In fact, the client had begun to do less and less as she wasn’t sure what to do for the best. When I assessed her I discovered that her lower back was restricted with painful ‘trigger points’ in the surrounding muscles. Treatment focussed on gentle mobilisation and hands on treatment for relieving her trigger points, but very importantly, reassurance that in her case, graded 74

exercises specific to her problem would actually benefit her symptoms. Her program involved gentle mobilizing exercises, core stability and postural advice to regain control of her own body and lifestyle again. Gradually her symptoms resolved and her exercises were progressed to help prevent future reocurrancies. I was very happy to discharge her pain free with good mobility and back doing the things she most enjoys – it seems Plato was right! We have been established as a private physiotherapy company for six years now and have a range of chartered physiotherapy expertise in our clinics. We are based in five locations in South Wales (Cowbridge, Caerphilly, Taffs Well, Abercynon and Aberdare) and welcome you to get in touch if you feel we can help you get back to enjoying a better lifestyle and the weather that Welsh springtime is bound to offer!

If you’re not adopting the #ShopLocal ethos, perhaps it’s time. We all complain about how the small independent businesses are leaving our high streets but are we helping?

Butter Me Up

Rated five out of five by Food Standards, Butter Me Up produces a great range of fresh sandwiches with homemade fillings made to order. Traditional Cornish pasties, home-made scones and cakes, a superb range of fresh breads and rolls, plus a self service salad bar. 11 Windsor Road, Penarth CF64 1JB 029 2071 1176

If you’ve got into the habit of visiting the supermarket for your meat and groceries, then you’re certainly not alone. Yes, supermarkets have lots of choice but they aren’t always the cheapest. Windsor Arcade in Penarth is an excellent example of what we’d all like our High Streets to look like. At the High Street end, it has an independent optician, a great little book shop (perhaps we could give Amazon a miss), a fine sandwich bar Butter Me Up, and Windsor’s Gifts. Inside this beautiful Grade II listed arcade you’ll find Windsor Fruit Stores, which has a superb selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables (I can vouch for the quality). The arcade doesn’t have a butcher but there are two excellent ones just around the corner. So, if you’re a Penarthian, your meat, fruit and veg shopping is sorted - and you’ll meet some real characters here.

Nick at Frangoulis can repair your shoes, cut your home and car keys and, if you have a really sweet tooth, Phil’s Umpa Lumpa Sweet Shop has an amazing range. At the Ludlow Lane end you’ll find the Celtic Lounge and Windsor Tea Rooms so if you fancy a bite or a cuppa and a cake you’ll be in good hands. The fact is if we don’t support these really great businesses they’ll disappear from our streets forever, which is fine if all we want are chains and charity shops. To stay in business they need your business and that just doesn’t apply to Windsor Arcade in Penarth. We need to adopt this approach right across the Vale - in Cowbridge, Barry, Dinas Powys, Llantwit Major and Porthcawl. Mark my words, when they’re gone you’ll miss them. You can make a difference. Shop local start today.

Windsor Arcade also has a good barber and a photographic portrait studio. Again, these are great small, independent businesses. The arcade even has its own talented bespoke jeweller - Matthew Mullooly owns Northern Star. He’s an extremely talented designer and maker. If you’re looking for gifts then you’ll be spoiled for choice. Anastasia Beads, The Polka Dot Door and the previously mentioned Windsor’s Gifts have a brilliant selection.

If you’re one of the many thousands of people who visit Cowbridge to shop, you might not realise that it’s the only market town in the Vale and that it has a weekly cattle market that is currently under threat. We dig a little deeper to find out more.

M arket Forces Who are you and what do you do? Herbert R. Thomas LLP and Watts & Morgan LLP have run livestock/farm related produce/equipment and chattel auctions/sales within the Cattle Market at Cowbridge separately, or jointly, since 1857. These activities have, since 1977, been run under an umbrella entity “Glamorgan Marts”. What happens there? The joint auctioneers sell sheep by public auction to buyers representing wholesale meat companies. The market attracts stock from farmers over a wide geographical area to include the Vale of Glamorgan, the County Borough of Bridgend, the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff and the County Borough of Neath Port Talbot, as well as Cardiff and its surrounds. How often does it happen? Every week on a Tuesday.

Can “regular” people go? The general public are welcome to attend the market but if they enter the livestock premises, they must adhere to strict bio security measures and will need appropriate footwear such as wellingtons as they will be required to disinfect their footwear on entering and leaving the market premises. What do you the market brings to the town of Cowbridge? Cowbridge is the only market town in the Vale. Cowbridge has been a market town for over 700 years. A livestock market is held every Tuesday throughout the year. Approximately 30,000 animals are sold each year through the market at a value of over £2 million. Trading and business community benefit from holding a livestock market. The site is a key area for car parking in the town. 78

We hear there’s talk of it closing, is this true? The livestock market site is owned by The Vale of Glamorgan Council. The threat of its closure first surfaced in 2011. Subsequently, in April 2012, the extent of local concern with regard to the potential closure of the livestock market was clearly illustrated in a demonstration in April 2012 when about 1,000 protestors, made up of local farmers, local businesses and resident, plus some 50 tractors, marched through Cowbridge High Street to the livestock market site. Subsequently, the Vale Tourism Association (VTA) was established in 2012 with a remit to consider possible options for the livestock market site which retain the livestock market plus other uses/facilities that would benefit Cowbridge.

Members of the VTA include: Cowbridge Chamber of Trade, Cowbridge Town Council, the livestock market auctioneers, the Vale Marketing Group, Cowbridge Charter Trust, Capital Regional Tourism, VCVS, local businesses and representatives of Vale farming interests. Creative Rural Communities and other Vale of Glamorgan Council officers attend as observers.

“ Cowbridge is the only market town in the Vale. Cowbridge has been a market town for over 700 years. A livestock market is held every Tuesday throughout the year..”

The Vale Market Action Group’s objective is to promote and develop a scheme for the Cowbridge livestock market site that retains the livestock market and enhances the site through provision of community facilities and surfaced car parking. One aspect of the scheme is for the provision of a market hall to provide a community facility that does not exist at present and establishes a permanent site for the Farmers’ Market and the annual Cowbridge Food & Drink Festival, together with three small shops, community café and open space for additional markets and open air entertainment. The Vale of Glamorgan Council and, in particular, its Executive Leader, Mr. Neil Moore, have been very supportive in the promotion of a suitable scheme for the Cowbridge livestock market site. 79

The present position is that the livestock market will continue under a licence agreement with The Vale of Glamorgan Council until April 2015, during which time The Vale of Glamorgan Council will consider and decide upon the future use of the Cowbridge livestock market site, having due regard to the proposal of the Vale Market Action Group to promote and develop a suitable scheme for the site.

For more information on the Cattle Market please contact: Mandy Davies, VTA Chair 07766 102526 or 01446 773171

Finding a hair salon that’s right for you is no mean feat, given that there are so many to choose from. Most importantly, staff have to be well trained and at the top of their game. Equally as important is a great atmosphere, a happy team means a happy clientele. Shaltons in Talbot Green are testament to this as the atmosphere is positively infectious. We chat to Elayne Shalton about what she believes makes Shaltons such a popular salon choice.

Shaltons

to build a relationship with our clients, spending time on our consultations offering advice, suggesting new styles, colouring services and after care on a regular basis. We are a very close team, who thoroughly enjoy working together, which is often commented on by our clients. Our philosophy at Shaltons is to treat all our clients as if every visit is their first, making sure each appointment is tailored to their individual needs. What about brides to be? Yes, we have wedding and special events services, with specialists on hand who are available for consultations prior to appointments; also offering services for all the wedding party.

When was Shaltons established? Shaltons was formally known as Cats Whiskers and was established in 1981, changing the name in 1997 to Shaltons Relationship Hairdressing. Tell us about your team at Shaltons. I was joined by Julie our salon manager who started her training with me in May of 1984. We have seen many changes in hairstyling and service over the years. Our Senior Stylist Jo joined the company in 2001; whilst Areesha, who is my daughter, joined us, alongside Keeley and Katy, eight years ago. Our newest recruit Rhian is about to complete a two year apprenticeship. A team to be very proud of! Where do your clients come from? We have a loyal client base from far and wide as well as our local area. Do you offer hair cutting and styling for men and children? Yes we do. Our clients range from babies to the more mature. How do your clients know about you? Through media coverage, our website, Facebook; although mainly through recommendation from word of mouth.

What products do you use? We believe in using the very best products on the market, namely L’Oreal, TiGi and ghd. These companies offer the latest in technology including INOA by L’Oreal, a 100% ammonia free hair colouring solution, which is kinder to hair. Do you offer discounts for your clients? We run a loyalty scheme for all our clients, whether it be a weekly styling or a four weekly return colour service, with no restriction on day or stylist. Our Happy Highlight days have been a great success with dates being released on the last Thursday each month. For our gents we have a loyalty card which offers a free haircut on their 8th visit. We also send out regular offers through emails including birthday discounts. Why do you think your clients come to Shaltons? Our clients tell us they like coming to Shaltons for it’s relaxed, friendly atmosphere; accompanied by our attention to detail, technical excellence and advice. We aim to provide all our clients, new and old, a unique Shaltons experience on every visit; 80

What are Shaltons achievements? We are frequently featured in trade and consumer magazines. We are Members of the National Hairdressing Federation and one of only a few salons in Wales to belong to the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. We are an official colour salon for L’Oreal. The team also undergoes regular training with L’Oreal, TIGI and ghd. Any plans for the future? Yes, we’re very excited as we will soon be offering manicures and pedicures including Gelish; which is something our clients have been asking for, and we are keen to provide. Are you on Facebook? Our Facebook page has been very successful for us. We regularly post news, client pictures, styling ideas and offers, so keep your eyes peeled!

How many times have you heard companies say, “Before you build or refurb, talk to us first!” When it comes to mood-lighting, Ian Murphy really means it.

IN THE MOOD Ian Murphy is owner of Inspirational Lighting in Cardiff and, as the the saying goes, what he doesn’t know about mood-lighting, probably isn’t worth knowing. Why is it so important to talk to you first? Mood lighting is not something you can add afterwards. I had a call from a lady recently who’d spent thousands on her kitchen and was absolutely distraught when she realised that we couldn’t retro-fit. If you’re even thinking about a renovation or new build, talk to us first. You’ll need to let everyone else involved in the project know your intentions. When were you established? Ten years ago. I’ve been in the electrical wholesale business for 27 years. We’ve been involved with several hundred projects in Wales, the UK and Europe but the majority of clients are in south Wales and along the M4 corridor. We’ve worked in Dubai several times. No project is the same – it’s never dull. What type of clients use you? We work with domestic and commercial clients in equal measure.

What’s possible? We design for interiors, exteriors and gardens. Kitchens, living areas and bathrooms are very popular canvases for mood-lighting. Usually we invite customers to the showroom where we can give them a demonstration and show them what’s possible. We talk about what they’d like, and their budget, and design a system especially for them. Controls are wireless and can be pre-programmed into your iPhone or iPad. You also have a switch in the room. You can alter the mood of a living space instantly. Are your installations expensive? I don’t think so when you consider the impact of what we do and the emotional effect it has on customers. I can’t think of another thing you would do to a home that has quite the wow factor for a relatively small amount of money. Also, consider that a lot of the wiring and installation you have to have installed anyway. What we do is make that installation and investment deliver more bang for your buck. Are they expensive to run? We use all LED lighting which is basically low energy systems. For example a 5 watt LED bulb can provide the same light as a conventional 50 watt bulb. Low energy LED is definitely the future. 87

Black Sheep specialise in loft conversions and building solutions. We met Head of Construction, Keith Davies, at St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay to find out why this particular building business wants to stand out from the crowd.

Black Sheep

a job is started and left untouched for weeks on end, or where emails or calls are left unanswered for days on end. We take pride in our work. We’re confident that the small details will add up to a big difference – whether it is cleaning up at the end of every day, to decorating your loft conversion so that all you need to choose are is the furniture/fixtures; you will be surprised at how many quotations do not include this.

How’s the building business? Spring and summer is traditionally busy. The expense of Christmas is, hopefully, in the past and, with the weather turning, people are generally more optimistic - so work on larger projects such as a loft conversion, extension or remodelling is beginning. With drier weather on the way, we are also finding that our carpentry skills are in demand for external projects like decking.

Why did you call yourselves Black Sheep? Well, we’re not the black sheep of our families but, when we created the brand, we did want an a-typical identity for a building company and one that showcases our Welsh roots. We also hope that Black Sheep makes people pause for thought and consider what their expectations are from a building company.

What inspired you to create the Black Sheep brand? A good tradesperson is hard to find. We have brought together a workforce, with decades of experience to create a building company that, we believe, is second to none. We wanted to make the process of finding a good builder easier. It’s all come about because, as professionals, we have the same problems as private customers when they’re looking for good trades-people so we decided to do it ourselves.

How did Black Sheep come about? We created the Black Sheep pen through personal experiences with certain unreliable builders. When we eventually found Keith, our Head of Construction, we immediately noticed the difference the simple things made to our customer experience – regular and clear communication, confidence to test our expressions of what we wanted and to suggest changes where the end product would benefit from them, and of course we noted the quality of an end product that was on time and on budget.

Vale Life readers will see our vans around the Vale and, if they do, please pop in to our sites to see the quality and type of work that we are undertaking. How do you retain good trades-people? By looking after them. We treat our workforce better. We pay them more. We look after them. That way you hold on to good people – they want to work for us and they work better because of that. Our workforce have worked in London and internationally. They are among the very best in the industry.

We felt that we could bring corporate values and experience to the business to take it to the next level; and leave Keith to do what he is best at in delivering an end product that customers are delighted with. And so the Black Sheep pen was born. What makes Black Sheep different? We apply a customer focussed experience to what is a traditionally ‘hit and miss’ relationship - we have all had experiences where builders do not turn up when they are expected to, or where 88

The directors, and driving force, behind Black Sheep have experience working for in the corporate sector which means we bring that management style to our projects. Black Sheep have put together a highly experienced team who have bought into the corporate culture. Our ethos is Quality: Reliable: Design: We aim not only to meet, but to exceed our customers’ expectations. What next for Black Sheep? We have recently secured the services of Rebecca Lewis-Chapman, our Retained Architect to ensure that we can provide an end-to-end design to construction service. We are delighted to be exploring new opportunities with the support of Rebecca and her team. We are always looking to broaden and deepen our pool of talent and would love to hear from skilled trades-people within South Wales - or complimentary businesses such as architects and surveyors. The economy is certainly beginning to grow and Black Sheep wants to ensure that customers who want to build, renovate or repair their homes have a company on hand that they can depend on.

Based in Maesteg, Rose Burridge is a busy, self-employed, chartered quality professional. Rose works with clients across the UK looking to implement ISO standards in their businesses. As she travels a great deal, having a reliable car is essential.

Tried & Tested

As a business that relies on client contact over a large geographical area, Rose needs to be absolutely sure that her car is in A1 condition at all times. Time, as we all know, is money so the last thing Rose needs is to be sat in a service bay waiting for her car to be serviced, when she could be getting on with work. How did you hear about CollectMyWheels? I met John Enticott at a networking event in Bridgend around four years ago. What work do they undertake for you? MOT, service, rescue and recovery, fault diagnostics, brakes – they look after just about everything. How does CollectMyWheels compare on price? Same - or better really - especially as their service includes collection of my vehicle. It’s the down time that really costs in business.

Are you pleased with their service? Always, yes. What do you like most about the CollectMyWheels offering? They’re easy to contact. Always give good clear explanations, a great service and speedy turnaround. It’s the collection and delivery service that especially impresses me. It means I don’t have to take time off work. I like the online booking facility too - I can book a time that fits in with my schedule. Would you recommend CollectMyWheels to friends or family? I have - to many friends, colleagues and family. John is a great mechanic knowledgeable and thorough. I completely trust him and his team.
