WELCOME Spring might be the season for the most dramatic weather changes but I think autumn is where everything changes. It’s not just the darker nights and bare trees but we change as humans too. We get our nests ready for the cold, we cook soups and pies and we tend to our homes, cosifying and shoaring up against the winds. Christmas might be knocking on our door, but for now, it’s all about comfy, cwtchy layers, cackling fires and family time. Have I just described hibernation? I suppose I have.

Passionate about the Vale We are independent. We live in the Vale. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale.

Caveat emptor All advertisers have supplied their own copy (and in some cases artwork), and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy of Vale Life magazine, please send a cheque for £20.00 (four issues) made payable to Vale Life. Visit www.valelife.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed around, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

The Queen B, Penarth provided the gorgeous clothes, models Jodie Tanner (owner of The Queen B), Erian, Charlotte and Gabby made the clothes look amazing. Blu Hair Design, also of Penarth, and local make-up artist Victoria Valentine created the look we were aiming for with style. All that was needed was a photographer to capture the many looks and moments and Paul Cornish of CWC Imagery certainly did that. All in all, a fab shoot and a thoroughly enjoyable morning for us all. Who thought working could be this much fun? See you in the winter.

Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors.

As usual, there are ideas aplenty for home readying and what to wear this season. This leads me on to the very pleasant morning we spent at Pier 64 for our autumn photoshoot.

Birthday celebration is appealing In celebration of her 60th Birthday, Jane Maggs of The Knap, Barry, held two vintage tea parties at the Little Blue Deli. Instead of presents, Jane requested that those attending should make a donation to the Organ Appeal at All Saints’ Church, Barry. The ladies enjoyed a delicious tea of sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, jam, strawberries, a selection of cakes and plenty of tea. Pretty vintage china, tablecloths and flowers made the occasions really special, together with the Deli's ever attentive staff. A total of £600 was donated! ❧ 3 ❧

In May 2012, All Saints’ Church launched its Pipe Sponsorship Scheme as part of the appeal and these donations will sponsor a small rank of pipes and an eight feet pipe in celebration of Jane’s special birthday.

Hamptons customers are pure gold Hamptons, Penarth are overwhelmed, yet again, at the Olympic sized generosity of their customers. Over £180 was raised as a result of their recent Olympic Art Competition and Olympic Torch photo-shoot which benefited the Teenage Cancer Trust, a registered charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.

The talented winners; Niamh Bannister and Siân Blackburn were photographed with 400m Olympic medallist Jamie Baulch, Grammy award winning soprano Rebecca Evans and Olympic torchbearer Lara Cowpe with her Olympic torch. Winner of the pre-school category, Carys Evans, was on holiday for the photo call but luckily her grandparents, Mr & Mrs Edwards, were on hand to accept Carys’ prize on her behalf. Members of the public then also had the opportunity to have their photographs taken with the Olympic torch in return for a donation to The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Peter Knowles of Hamptons commented, “Lara was thrilled with the total and we’ve had great feedback from the people who had their photos taken. We also thank Rebecca Evans, Jamie Baulch and Lara Cowpe, as their personal commitment undoubtedly made this event the success it was. Their assistance, and our customers generosity, means so much to us but even more to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Thank you from all of us.” Hamptons 10 Ludlow Lane, Penarth CF64 1EA 029 2070 5391 www.hamptons-design.co.uk

It’s all go at Barry’s Little Blue Deli. Not a year has passed since it opened on Thomson Street and the team is opening a second establishment on High Street. Where do they get the energy?

THE DELI DIARIES Vale Life magazine takes a sneak peek at a day in the life of this popular delicatessen/café. Here, we proudly present (ta dah!) The Uncensored Deli Diaries...

A day in September... Dear Diary - How can it be 7am already? I still hate mornings and I’m considering starting an online petition to have them moved to a more reasonable part of the day. Until I do, it’s still opening time at 7am with all kinds of breakfasts ready to go. A bewildering number of people seem unimaginably cheery and jolly in the shop well before 9am and I’m not sure how they do it! Fuelled by eggs Benedict and cappuccino, off they go to sell dresses, cut hair or make dogs better (among other careers). 9 o’clock and lots of mums arrive fresh from the school run. All enjoying calming mugs of warmth with seductive names like White Chocolate Mocha or Vanilla Spice Latte and freshly baked cakes. Note to self - must remember to get a sign for the door insisting that no customers feel guilt whilst enjoying their morning treats.

Between chats with visitors, we prepare for the lunch time assault. Superfood salads (tick), Greek salads (tick), Corned Beef Pie and Lasagne (tick). We brace ourselves - here it comes, the lunchtime rush.

Lunchtime customer service is a bit like extreme speed dating. You get around a minute to meet and greet, learn the person’s name and their food preferences (and maybe where they work) and their favourite weather, vegetable or drink. Occasionally you learn a lot more besides. It’s just a vital minute or two where we make sure that the customer is treated very well and that they know how much we care about our service and food and how much we appreciate their visit. Unlike speed dating though, we get to speed date the same people tomorrow and the day after as over 80% of our customers are regulars. The speed dating has drifted into hundreds of micro-relationships where food and drink and friendship are shared. Many of our customers now have menu items named after them - Christina, for example, has a panini named after her and so does Tavian.

Lunchtime races on until somewhere around 1.45pm when scone o’clock strikes (well, it's actually more of a gorgeous creamy splodge than a chime). It’s that moment when someone makes the first order for a scone with jam and cream. In my head it tells me without looking at the clock that lunchtime is amost over and that we are about to declare cake-ageddon! “Launch more coffee cake into the dessert canons - let ‘em have it!”

The next few hours are spent helping to reduce the European Union’s butter mountain. We should get an award for our efforts in this area I think. So many times I have arranged fruit in tantalising ways (fifty shades of grape I call it) and it just sits there on the shelf, neglected, undesired, swinging its fruity legs whilst it waits for someone to grudgingly choose it. It’s being cheated on from the outset as the buyers coo over the cakes and then say, “I’d better not.” Poor fruit salad - fruit has feelings too you know. People don’t come out of their house to eat fruit though... am I mad? Unbelievably, good toffee and caramel cake with a whole bar of Caramac melted over the top makes people leave the house. 4.30pm. Vintage afternoon tea anyone? Today we had a lovely afternoon tea party all served on vintage crockery to celebrate a special birthday. Tiered cake stands, flowery tea pots, spotted table cloths and even stylish vintage magazines. I feared for the vintage tea cups - willow pattern shatter chatter became louder as the party continued!

❧ 14 ❧

The team wanted to tell us about some other exciting developments at The Little Blue Deli... Opening on High Street Barry Little Blue Deli will be opening on High Street during October. It will be licensed and will stay open until 11pm. The daytime format will be the same at both shops. Evening times at High Street will feature a tempting cocktail menu along with a varied full service restaurant menu. Try something different for lunch We hate eating the same old thing every day for lunch so we’re always coming up with new ideas. How about Crispy tempura vegetable wraps with mango and mint dressing? Or very spicy buffalo chicken with blue cheese? Or even Japanese style chicken Katsu curry flatbreads with green peppers and spring onions? You will always find something new and different on our menu. If adventure isn’t your thing, we also have wonderful fish and chips and home-made corned beef pie. Special diets Nearly everything you see in our shop is home-made. We make gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free cakes, sandwiches, pasta, lasagne, Yorkshire puddings, battered fish and all kinds of other things. We cater for vegans and offer a huge vegetarian selection. Being part of our community We believe that a coffee shop should be more than somewhere that sells great coffee and food. We want people to feel more than just welcome, we want our visitors to feel involved. We have an ongoing charity fundraising program and work with a range of local charities and good causes.

As the day comes to a close, the ‘after workers’ and ‘after schoolers’ join the cacophany. Scone o’clock is replaced by steak and pie time and a relentless chip production line. Our chips were described today as ‘little pieces of heaven’ by one customer. They are the best chips around for sure seasoned with a secret concoction to ensure their irrisistability. Burritos and Chimichangas, Paella and Pasta are all popular tea time choices too.

Take away Remember that all of our food can be taken away. We have boxes that will ensure your food stays hot and fresh.

Goodbye salty, chemical-riddled ready meals - hello fresh, wholesome convenient meals that can be eaten in or taken home.

There’s no need to settle for chips every time you don’t feel like cooking. Why not try Paella? Or a Greek salad? A full roast on Sunday afternoon - it’s so much easier than making your own.

7pm and it’s closing time. Hundreds of mini relationships later, a broad cross section of Barry’s population have visited throughout the day - school mums, shoppers, neighbours, gym visitors, office workers, school kids, families meeting for tea, friends meeting for birthdays, individuals dropping by for a warm welcome and a friendly meal.

The Little Blue Deli Thomson Street, Barry Vale of Glamorgan CF63 4JL 01446 401101 www.littlebluedeli.co.uk www.facebook.com/littlebluedeli Twitter @littlebluedeli Open 7 days a week 7am til 7pm Monday to Friday 9am til 3pm Sunday

An equally warm welcome for everyone. I’ve looked at food for twelve hours, I’ve talked about food for twelve hours. I can’t face any more food today... good night diary. Jonathan ❧ 15 ❧

“Celebrate Christmas at River View restaurant with dishes that are fresh and full of subtle flavours.” CHINESE NEW YEAR

Chinese New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays, and is a time of feasting with the family, celebration, fireworks, and gift-giving. New Year for 2013 is on February 10th and River View Chinese restaurant will again celebrate in style, with the traditional lion dance, fire cracker, and a luxury feast featuring lobster and other good-luck dishes.

Prawns’ ■ Mixed vegetable in black bean source ■ Stirred fried rice

The date of Chinese New Year changes every year with the lunar cycle and the Chinese calendar follows a twelve year pattern with each year named after an animal. The story goes that Buddha (or the Jade Emperor) invited all of the animals to join him for a New Year celebration, but only twelve animals turned up.

“New Year for 2013 is on February 10th. Celebrate in style at River View.” ❧ 16 ❧

To reward the animals that did come, Buddha named a year after each of them in the order that they arrived, starting with the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The coming year will be the year of the Snake and once again there will be a flamboyant performance from the Kung Foo team. VALEN TIN E’S N IGHT

There’s so much going for The Knap, Barry. You can spend a very pleasant morning or afternoon strolling around the lake or along the pebbly beach. It’s the perfect place to people-watch.

RELAX AT ROMILLY’S We have also introduced high tea, which consists of sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, homemade cake and a pot of tea. We pride ourselves on serving good quality Segafredo coffee and hot chocolate. We also offer Sweetbird Smoothies which our younger customers love.

The latest hotspot along the popular Bron y Mor is Romilly’s, a tastefully designed and welcoming coffee shop with more than a nod to shabby chic. Run by long time friends Lesley and Alicia, Romilly’s is a business dream come true. How long has the business been established? We opened at the end of May and we’re loving every minute of it. What made you decide on the name Romilly’s? We thought long and hard about this one and finally decided on Romilly’s as we’re so close to Romilly Park, Romilly School and a lot of land here belongs to Lord Romilly.

Who chose the décor? That was a joint effort. We both have the same sense of style and we like the shabby chic, eclectic look. We often get asked by customers if they can buy some of our crockery and vintage china, this is something we’re looking to introduce at some point in the near future. What do you offer day-to-day? We offer paninis, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, with fillings that are prepared on the premise. All of our fillings are made to order which means that they are as fresh as possible. We cook our own ham on the premises and this is one of the firm favourites with our customers, along with our homemade corned beef pie.

Do you offer any other services? Yes, we can cater for private parties and functions. We have quite a large Tea Garden - perfect for sunny days. With a marquee covering our garden and our interior space, we can easily accommodate up to 90 guests. We think our views over the popular Knap Lake provide the perfect setting for an intimate party or wedding reception. What are your most requested dishes? It has to be our homemade cakes! Especially the carrot and ginger and coffee cakes, these along with the very popular cupcakes always sell out fast. What will you be offering during the autumn/winter months? Home-made soups, chilli’s and jacket potatoes. Good warming, wholesome food. We will also be holding quiz nights, craft fayres and music nights. Find out more on our Facebook and Twitter pages. What is your philosophy? We wanted to offer somewhere for people to go that we would want to visit. You can’t beat home-cooked food, served by people who care about good quality service in an environment that is spotlessly clean and welcoming. Finally, why The Knap? That’s a simple one. We both live nearby and have always loved The Knap. We believe that this is such a beautiful area that it deserved a venue that complemented the surroundings. For all our good intentions, few of us have the time to cook a meal worthy of Masterchef every evening. And while we all love the idea of friends coming over for dinner, the preparation and cooking of a posh meal can escalate into a time-consuming and expensive stress-fest.

COOK was first established 15 years ago, its founding principle was to make food using exactly the same techniques and ingredients that a good domestic cook would use at home, so everything looks and tastes homemade. Today, nothing has changed and COOK continues to make its meals by hand at its kitchen in Kent. As proof of the food’s hand-prepared nature, the name of the individual chef who cooked each dish is printed on the packaging. The Cook shop on Wellfield Road has been open since June 2011. The business is a franchise and is run by Liz Smart and Karen Purchase. They were both teachers but discovered Cook food and were so impressed by the food decided they just had to introduce it to people in Cardiff! What is the philosophy of the business? As well as providing top quality food at the best price that looks and tastes homemade (what’s even more remarkable is that all the meals are frozen and go straight from your freezer into your oven or microwave). We also pride ourselves on offering good service, so as well as a friendly smile and being offered a sample of the food when you enter the shop, we will also pack your bags, offer to carry your bags back to your car and try to help customers in any way we can. What are the product ranges? COOK offer meals suitable for everyone, vegetarians, gluten free, children’s meals and baby food. We provide meals in one, two and four portions so you can mix and match if you happen to be feeding more than four people. Some of our best sellers in Cardiff are Moroccan Lamb Tagine, Fisherman’s Pie, Indonesian Vegetable Curry, Chicken Dijon and many more.

COOK! We can cater for special nights in with Confit of Duck with a Juniper Berry Sauce, Monkfish Wellingtons and Sea Bass with Asparagus Tips with Linguine in a Lobster and Saffron Bisque. We also provide food suitable for parties and with Christmas soon to be upon us, our wonderful Stuffed Turkey Crown, Beef Wellington for 8, Venison Pâté and a variety of canapés will impress. We also have a wonderful array of desserts such as Chocolate and Truffle Torte, White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake, Passion Fruit Pavlova, and Pear and Almond Tart. As well as all this we have a range of cakes such as Carrot Cake, Victoria Sponge, Chocolate Cake and a variety of tray bakes. Why do you think people shop here? We find as soon as customers taste the food they want to try more as they realise how good the meals taste. We have some wonderful staff who make customers feel valued and there is always a happy atmosphere in the shop. We try to go out of our way to help our customers so, for example, we are happy to defrost puddings before collection if requested. We even drop food off on our way home for our regulars! ❧ 18 ❧

Do you deliver? Absolutely. You can either go on-line www.cookfood.net or phone the shop on 029 2049 4166. If you spend over £30 and live in Roath, Penylan, LLanedeyrn and Cyncoed your delivery will be free but you would have to phone the shop to place your order. We also deliver to LLandaff, Whitchurch, Penarth, Cowbridge, Dinas Powys, Radyr and Barry (over £50 for free delivery). Where do your customers come from? Our customers come from all over Cardiff and beyond –we have customers who make the trip from Swansea and Newport to shop with us. Also some customers with holiday cottages shop for the food for their holiday (who wants to cook on holiday?) and we can pack it up for them so it won’t defrost en route. Boots by Ugg Australia

Whenever my wardrobe needs an injection of the latest season’s clothes, you would think that my first thought would be to head off into the city to the larger stores but you would be wrong.

BRYL’S BOUTIQUE You see, I’ve learnt over the years that I’m much better off shopping locally at an independent boutique.

Why? Well for many reasons. (1) local boutique owners don’t buy a lot of the same stock so you don’t run the fashion gauntlet of bumping into someone wearing the same item as you (2) a local boutique owner knows me, my lifestyle and my personality so is much more equipped to give me the best advice on what suits me and (3) with less overheads to pay for, chances are the prices are more affordable.

With brands such as French Connection, Sandwich, Nougat, Ted Baker, Darling, Traffic People, Great Plans, and her latest special occasion brand, Kate Cooper, Bryl’s Boutique has all that you need for daytime, evening and special occasions.

Mention Vale Life and you will get £20 off their large range of Ugg Australia footwear. Also look out for the arrival of new brand Beloved as seen on ITV’s This Morning.

Bryl’s Boutique in Barry ticks all three boxes. Owner Ann Bryl makes it her business to get to know her customers and their needs so that as soon as you walk in through the door, her mind immediately selects items that will suit you and your lifestyle. She has great fashion sense, buys stock that is on trend and knows will appeal to her clients. Her staff include family members which keeps the overheads down and which is reflected on the prices on the tickets.

RHOOSE Welcome to The Vale’s most southerly village In fact, to be precise, Rhoose (Y Rhws) is the most southerly village in Wales. Those who live in the village know that what they have on their doorstep, you can’t get from a large town. Shop owners greet you by name and there are enough businesses of variety for you to get all you need without having to drive into town.

From the local butcher, coffee shop, dentist, a choice of hair salons, pubs, barber, newsagents, optician, caravan parks and health club with swimming pool, an excellent primary and junior school, Rhoose village has it all, and its stunning location on the Heritage Coast means that it’s perfect for clifftop and coastal walks. Rhoose is accessible too, which makes getting to and from the village easy. With a regular bus service, new train station and even Cardiff International Airport five minutes away, Rhoose is the perfect commuter village. Read on to the meet some of the business owners we feature in this issue such as Deano’s Barbers, Coffee Time, Sublime, Posh Pawz and Tan-y-Hyde. Now you can greet them all by name, if you’re not already lucky enough to be on first name terms!

Coffee Time Every village needs a good coffee shop and that’s exactly what’s on offer at Coffee Time. With a wealth of experience in the catering industry, owner Glenys knows exactly what it takes to make customers happy. You’ll find great coffee, paninis, sandwiches and snacks here, but it’s the homemade cakes that get the school mums, the WI and the locals coming back for more. And who can blame them? Think ginger and lime, coffee and walnut and toffee apple – scrumptious! Takeaways and outside catering are also available. Please phone for more information. 21 Fontygary Road Rhoose 01446 711600

Readers of Vale Life may recall a feature on Dean back in our summer 2008 issue. Dean’s a complete motorhead and loves cars and especially Formula 1. His barber shop on Fontygary Road is a shrine to motor racing (there’s a coffee table made out of a Formula 1 wheel). Dean’s interest in hairdressing began at the age of twelve while working in a salon sweeping up. His grandfather, Michael Olympios, who emigrated from Cyprus, spent thirty years running his shop on Clifton Street in Roath, Cardiff so you could say that the trade is in the blood. Dean has a loyal local following of customers from Rhoose and across the Vale. “Business is good!” he says. “I see a steady stream of customers, young and old, mostly from Rhoose, Fontygary and Fonmon but I do have a number that travel further. I think some of them like to chat about the racing but you don’t have to be interested in cars to come here.” ❧ 26 ❧

You can still read Dean’s 2008 feature from Vale Life about his visit to the Nurburgring in Germany on www.valelife.co.uk and also watch a video of one of his laps in his Westfield which he still owns. Last year Dean and his family drove across the USA in a motor home. “It was an amazing experience,” Dean said, “It’s those sort of life experiences that I love to share when I’m back in work in Rhoose.” Deano’s Barbers 7 Fontygary Road Rhoose CF62 3DR 07791 917699

You know what it’s like. You’re really busy and you just don’t have the time to go into town to get your hair cut, coloured or blow dried. Not to mention the manicure and pedicure, eyebrows that need waxing or threading, eyelash extensions, spray tan...

TRIED & TESTED

Wouldn’t it be fabulous if there were somewhere in your local village that could not only supply all of this but do it incredibly well? Well, Tan y Hyde can deliver all of this and more. Owner Tracy Kemp and her team of stylists and beauticians are on hand for not only the local community but also clients from further afield. Don’t just take our word for it. Businesswoman and Rhoose resident Christine Absi has been a client of Tan y Hyde for the last two years. We chatted to Christine to find out why she’s such a loyal customer.

What treatments do you have? Kelly cuts and colours my hair and Catherine keeps my nails and eyelashes looking wonderful. How did you hear about the salon? Word of mouth. I live on Rhoose Point so it’s really convenient for me. A lot of my friends and colleagues come here. They really do have a loyal client base, both female and male, from youngsters to the more young at heart. They also cater for customers with disabilities and also visit the more mature client in their own home or at their nursing home. Nothing is too much trouble. It’s always a good sign when the salon is used as a training salon for apprentices and work placements for local colleges. What products do they use? They use Matrix products which really suit my hair. The products always leave it feeling soft, silky and manageable.

“I really enjoy coming here - it’s my time to relax and unwind.” ❧ 28 ❧

What do you like about Tan y Hyde? They are all incredibly friendly and approachable. Being so busy with work and I’m involved with organizing charity events, they do their utmost to fit me in whenever needed. I used to go to a top salon in Cardiff but I found that I received the same quality of service here, if not better! The staff are more friendly and it’s far more affordable. I really enjoy coming here - it’s my time to relax and unwind and I come away looking and feeling fabulous.

When is a salon not a salon? When it offers much more than a cut and a colour. Anyone visiting this salon will agree this is no ordinary salon, this is...

SUBLIME Owner Vanessa bought Sublime, completely refurbished it and it now has a following from Rhoose residents and clients across the Vale. We chat to Vanessa about why clients choose this thriving and exciting salon.

What’s your background? I come from Ffestiniog in north Wales and have worked as a hairdresser from the age of twelve. I went to college in London at the age of sixteen to the prestigious Morris School of Hair Design in Tottenham Court Road. I have worked in various London salons but missed Wales, so I returned to north Wales and worked there for a year before moving to south Wales. When did you open your first salon? Back in 1993. That was in St Athan. Where did your skills in hair colouring start? I started working for International Hair Cosmetics in December 2009 as a technical educator in colouring and opened Sublime in Rhoose in May, 2011 with a total refit. My background in specialist colouring enables me to travel all over the country training salons in colour techniques. The refurbishment is gorgeous. Tell us more The salon needed a considerable amount of work. I was lucky enough to combine my love of quality fixtures and fittings with my passion for supporting local businesses and chose Salon Ambiance Italian furniture by Salon Connection in Cardiff.

Where do your clients come from? Clients come from all over the Vale, and beyond. Once you have a customer who trusts your ability, they will travel to maintain their hair. We are a unisex salon and we find that a lot of men prefer to have their hair styled these days, so tend to use a hairdresser. Our clients include babies to some clients who are in their nineties. What products do you use? We use Affinage/ASP products, by a British company based in Southampton. We have a dedicated team who are continuously striving to develop the highest quality hair products. The advanced technology ensures we get the optimum results in colouring, locking in the colour and achieving the most spectacular shine and condition. Both my salons use nothing else as we believe in using the best and latest technology.

Introduce us to your staff? Tyler is my right hand girl and has been with me for years. She’s a highly dedicated and capable team member. Claire has come back to work after having her little one. She used to work for the previous salon owner so now she’s come back to a totally new salon. She has fitted in nicely with us and is enjoying her new found confidence with colour. Zoe started to work for us as soon as we opened in Rhoose and has completed her third year. She is now building a new client base of her own. Therese is our new member. She is our beautician and offers a selection of services at very reasonable prices. If you need a manicure, pedicure, waxing, spray tan, lash treatments or gel nails, Therese is your girl. There’s no better way of finding the right nursery for your child than word of mouth. That’s how Mr. and Mrs. Thomas got to know about Passport to Play Day Nursery in Rhoose. We chatted to Mr. Thomas about what he and his son Riley, aged two, think of this popular business.

TRIED & TESTED

At what age did Riley first join Passport to Play? He was 11½ months old (two weeks before his 1st birthday). What made you choose them? My wife works from home and, as it’s local to us, she can pick him up after his morning session and drop him to the in-laws in the afternoon. We had also heard very good reviews from other parents who had sent their children there in the past. Did you visit other establishments? No, again as we had heard great reviews, there was no need to look elsewhere. What do you like about the services they offer? The opening hours are great as I can drop Riley off on my way to work as they open at 7.30am and my wife can then pick him up at 1pm as you can either have a morning or afternoon placement, you do not have to send your child all day. They also do day trips with the children in the six weeks holidays and last year Riley went to Barry Island for the morning on the train.

Also, at Christmas, you receive a copy of your child’s portfolio, with all the activities they have been part of through the year. This includes photos, pictures and art work with key stages stating their progress at different levels. Does your son enjoy his time there and, if so, what does he like about it? When Riley first started he was quite shy and wanted one on one attention, he now loves going into nursery and interacting with the other children, the activities they carry out are so varied that he is always kept busy. What do you think of the food offering? Riley was a very fussy eater when he first started and would pick at the food, the staff at Passport to play have encouraged him to explore different textures of food and flavours, from Paella to fish pie, however the nappies aren’t very nice the next day. What do you think of the staff? The staff are great, I find them very professional. Riley loves the familiarity and the rapport they build with the children is everlasting. ❧ 30 ❧

I understand that you have another child; will you be sending her when she is old enough? Yes, again just before her first birthday. Do you think it’s value for money? I think it’s excellent value for money. Would you recommend Passport to Play to others? Most definitely.

“The staff are great, I find them very professional. The rapport they build with the children is everlasting.”

If you already shop at Hawkes Essentials in Morgan Arcade, you’ll be used to the iconic brands and impeccable service that owner, Russell Scott-Lawson, offers his clientele but with a major refurb underway, this iconic Cardiff style emporium is stepping up a gear.

STYLE IN OVERDRIVE You can’t accuse Russell ScottLawson of resting on his laurels. Having created one of Wales’ best gentlemen’s outfitters, Russell is about to raise the style and service bar significantly. “We don’t stand still,” Russell enthuses. “This has been in the pipeline for a couple of years and I’m delighted that the refurbishment is finally happening.” But don’t think for a minute that Hawkes Essentials has closed during this exciting time. “There’s no way we could close,” says Russell. “I have too many regular customers for whom Hawkes is a style lifeline. We’ve managed the process carefully and normal trade hasn’t been affected at all. In fact, we’ve actually seen an increase in sales!” For autumn and winter, Hawkes Essentials welcomes a new range of one of its iconic shirt brands, Eton. These fabulous shirts ooze style and quality and are extremely popular with Russell’s growing list of discerning customers. Joining Eton on the beautifully finished Hawkes Essentials shelves is new brand Holland Esquire. Holland Esquire is the product of lifelong tailor Nick Holland who literally grew up inside the industry (Nick’s father was an influential tailor in the 70’s). Russell says, “Nick was featured in the Britain’s Ten Best Tailors’ room at Harrods. Jackets, shirts and ties from this bold, British brand now grace Hawkes Essentials and this is one brand that exudes classic style combined seamlessly with contemporary creativity.” Hawkes Essentials 37-39 Morgan Arcade Cardiff CF10 1AF 029 2037 3780 www.hawkesessentials.com

When you talk to Steve and Claire, the one thing that comes across is their passion for design. Vale Life caught up with the couple at their design studio in Cardiff. Your reputation is for creating kitchens and living spaces. Why the move into bedrooms? STEVE We have designed bedroom furniture for clients but it’s been based around our German kitchen furniture. We’ve been looking for the right bedroom furniture product for a while and have found an Italian company that manufactures the most beautiful bedroom furniture.

What’s special about this product? CLAIRE As a woman, I probably have a different perspective, but I think the devil is in the details. The finish, the look, when you touch the material you can feel the love that’s gone into the manufacturing. Italians are passionate about design. Their whole philosophy and ethos is driven by design and style. Look at Lamborghini and Ferrari, they’re much more than cars, they’re art. We want people to feel good when they walk into a bedroom that we’ve created we want it to lift their soul. Beautiful things have that effect.

STEVE Claire’s right. As a designer, I want the relationship between form and function to be seamless and this range is just so beautiful to work with. It’s versatile in every way. Whatever and however the customer wants to store or present their clothes, this product allows you the flexibility and practicality to design free of constraint. It’s an absolute joy to work with. What’s hot in bedroom design? CLAIRE I think people have cluttered lives so simplicity will be the order of the day. Women want everything out of sight but accessible. Men have different priorities I think.

“We want people to feel good when they walk into a bedroom that we’ve created - we want it to lift their soul. Beautiful things have that effect.” ❧ 34 ❧

STEVE Absolutely. I believe that applies to kitchens and living spaces too. This is the iPad age and I believe the integration of technology and aesthetics is becoming more important to people. For me, as a designer, the art is making sure that all of these elements are considered at the beginning of the design process. We take great care to discuss clients’ lifestyles with them; what they want from the end product, and will it meet their needs? CLAIRE Ultimately, we want everything that we create to look beautiful and this new Italian range is functional as well as being simply gorgeous!

“Feel the love that’s gone into the manufacturing.” ❧ 35 ❧

When looking to redesign one room or the whole house, hands up who first thought of Maskreys to do the job? That’s no surprise, the iconic store had the lion’s share of this business for many, many years. Lucky for us then that two former employees Vivian Llewellyn and Gail Jones set up their own interior design business in the bustling village of Rhiwbina over a year ago.

HAUS FOR EVERY HOME We talk to Vivian and Gail about how the business is doing as they celebrate their first birthday.

Why did you open Haus? Redundancy can affect people in different ways. Some people give up, others fight on. We were both proud to work at Maskreys, enjoyed our jobs immensely and had built up a very good following. We worked well together and liked each other as people so, not long after being made redundant, we met for a coffee and hatched a plan to set up our own business together. What did working at Maskreys mean to you? A great deal. We had both worked there for fifteen years (Gail was the General Manager and Vivian managed the soft furnishings departments.) The training was second to none and we were able to work with the best brands on the market. Our combined years of experience means that we are extremely qualified at what we do. What does Haus offer? We specialise in made-to-measure curtains and blinds, curtain tracks and poles, wallpaper and home accessories. We’ve kept in touch with former employees of Maskreys who have since started their own businesses and work with them to offer additional services such as carpets and flooring, an upholsterer and a French polisher. We may not be as big as Maskreys once was but we can offer the same services. Maskreys was renowned for sourcing unique contemporary brands and products and, luckily, we have managed to do the same with brands from Sweden, Germany, Belgium and France. We can also offer the more traditional, classic look if that’s what the customer requires and feels more comfortable with.

Why did you choose Rhiwbina? We wanted to be in a vibrant, busy and lively environment and, after an extensive search, found the perfect village and premises on the high street.

Turn to page 85 for your chance to win a goodie bag worth £250!

There is a great mix of small independent businesses here and there’s a good feel to the place. It’s a joy to be here and shop here. A year on, is your relationship as strong? Yes, we still get on (laughs). When you’ve worked closely together for fifteen years, you iron out any differences. Actually it’s the differences that make it work as we can offer our customers more choice and a different perspective on things. What are your plans for the future? We’ve seen many of our former clients and welcomed many new ones so, ideally, we’d like to build on the reputation that has stood us in such good stead over the years. ❧ 36 ❧

We all love a good conservatory, but isn’t it annoying when it’s just too hot to relax in during the summer, too cold to use in the winter and just too noisy when it rains? Well, the solution could be available from Future Windows of Barry with the introduction of the Vertex tiled effect roof.

VERSA-TILE Future Window Solutions have recently been appointed a distributor and installer for this latest insulation technology that prevents major heat changes within your room therefore turning your conservatory into a room that truly can be used all year round. The roof is tried and tested and has been installed throughout Scandinavia for the past six years and has withstood the extreme weather conditions experienced there.

There’s no need for building regulations or planning, and the roofs can fitted to an existing conservatory. Future Windows’ design engineers will help take you through the many options available, ensuring that the design not only complements your home, but also suits the main purpose you will use it for. The Vertex tile effect roof bridges the gap between a conservatory and a brick extension and will give you a unique new living space that can truly be used all year round. We spoke to one happy customer, Mrs Elizabeth Davies of St. Mary Church, near Cowbridge who chose Future Windows to replace her existing roof with a Vertex roof system. Did you consult any other companies for this work? Yes, several companies for conservatory roof replacement but only Future Window Solutions for the Vertex roof system. I wanted a glass or solid type roof. Other local companies told me that I would have to have a new conservatory but I really only wanted a replacement roof. The old roof was a polycarbonate roof and was shabby, noisy in the rain, getting noisier with the wind and leaked in places. Although we temporarily fixed some of the problems, I knew we really needed a replacement roof. I did not want another polycarbonate one.

I’ve been looking for a replacement (glass or solid type roof) but other local companies said I would have to have a new conservatory as the current one wouldn’t take the weight of a glass roof. Through some research, I found that Modplan were the fabricators. I rang Modplan and they directed me to Future Window Solutions. Has the work made a difference? It has completely transformed the conservatory! It’s a pleasure to be in there for several reasons. The new roof gives a more even temperature and is certainly cooler in the summer and you can’t hear the rain - it’s lovely and quiet. It’s now the ‘garden room’ that I always wanted. Were you happy with their work? We are absolutely delighted with the roof and Future Window Solutions as a company. Craig Harewood visited me and went through the options, costs and timescales and an installation date was agreed. He kept me informed of progress at all times. The actual installation was carried out by two excellent employees and the work was completed on time with a minimum of disruption. Both inside and outside were left in a clean and tidy state. All parts of the old roof were taken away, leaving no mess at all. Would you recommend them? Absolutely and without hesitation. We have given Future Windows’ details to friends of ours who are looking at replacing some windows and I would certainly use them again. Beauty Angel at the Tan Studio, Bridgend is an amazing new light technology treatment which promises to reduce fine lines. Here, Michelle Harris of the popular hair salon, Mint in Porthcawl, shares with us her experience of the treatment.

TRIED & TESTED

First, the science bit... The Beauty Angel Red Light Collagen Treatment utilises amazing new light technology to reduce fine lines and make skin visibly more taut and smoother.

What immediate difference did the Beauty Angel make? I noticed after the first few treatments that my skin felt and looked refreshed and a lot healthier. My pores were also a lot finer. Overall, I’m very impressed.

There are no nasty ultra- violet rays involved here as the special light is absorbed by the skin’s cells and stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. With no harmful side effects, the Beauty Angel is truly heaven sent.

Are the effects of the treatment ongoing? What’s the condition of your skin like now? Since having to stop the treatments, I’ve noticed that, whilst my skin looks better than it was, my combination skin has started to return. Now that my move is nearly over, I’ve already booked my next course and I can’t wait to get that refreshed look back again.

Michelle, what condition was your skin in before the treatment? I’ve always had combination skin, parts of it are oily and parts are dry. In total, how many treatments did you have? Right now, I’m half way through my treatments. Moving house has meant that I had to take a break in between.

Would you recommend the Beauty Angel treatment to your friends and colleagues? A few of my friends and customers have noticed the difference already so, yes, I have already passed it on and I’m sure they’ll be just as impressed! ❧ 41 ❧

So there we all were, fantastic clothes, bags and shoes, beautiful models, gorgeous venue - then it was lights, camera, action! Over to Paul Cornish of CWC Imagery for his take on the day.

LIFE COVER Shot on location at Pier 64, Penarth. A big thank you to Joanne and Francis for the use of their gorgeous restaurant. All clothings, bags and shoes by The Queen B, Penarth A big thanks to Phillipa Moss-Vernon, stylist at The Queen B, Alexis, Hayley, Stephanie of Blu Hair Design, Lawrence of Glo Hair Design, Victoria Valentine, Make-Up Artist, and our models Jodie, Gabby, Erian and Charlotte.

The brief - produce a magazine cover shot and show off the fabulous clothing available from The Queen B. I had photographed at Pier 64 before so I knew that the setting would look amazing. I had also heard great things of the make-up artist, Victoria Valentine, and she didn’t disappoint. Although I’ve carried out photographic work for the magazines in the past, I hadn’t worked with Jennifer and Mark, Editors of the magazine, on a shoot. I wasn’t sure how that was going to work out, but it was brilliant!

The models arrived at the venue bang on time, with hair and make-up done to perfection and the changes through several sets of clothing went very smoothly. Both Erian and Charlotte were an absolute dream to work with as was first time model, 15 year old Gabby (there’s definitely a career in modelling for her!) Jodie worked well in front of the camera and Phillipa Moss-Vernon, stylist at The Queen B, was a great help. Apparently she’d worked on photoshoots before and her experience certainly showed. The weather proved kind to us and I was able to shoot both inside the restaurant and on the fabulous balcony which overlooked the marina. With only a two and a half hour window to complete the shoot, I think we were able to achieve exactly what was required of the brief. As for working with Jennifer and Mark, that was a fabulous experience that I would like to repeat. Blu - one of Penarth’s leading hair salons The Vale Life team were very pleased to be able to work with the creative team at Blu Hair Design to help us create our front cover and inside features. We gave them a tough brief, gorgeous clothing from The Queen B, beautiful young models, and a fabulous, contemporary venue, Pier 64 in Penarth. How is that tough I hear you ask? Well, they had an early start of 7am and hair and make-up had to be completed and models to the venue by 9am. We caught up with the team to find out how they thought the day went.

Alexis, what was the brief? Luckily, we are only a couple of doors away from The Queen B, so we were able to see the outfits beforehand. We met with the models prior to the shoot to check out the condition and colour of the models’ hair. Jodie, owner of The Queen B and model for the day, is a client at the salon anyway, so Hayley blow dried her hair in her usual classy style with just a snip of the fringe. Erian (brunette) just needed a coloured rinse to give her hair some shine, Charlotte (blonde) had just come back from holiday so needed a few moisturising treatments and Gabby (the youngest of the models and also blonde) has her hair cut, coloured and styled by my mother so we were already familiar with her hair.

We knew from the clothing that we were looking for glamorous, Mad Men styling from the 60’s and that, paired with similar styling for makeup, we were good to go. Who did you have there to help? Hayley attended to Jodie. I called on the help of Lawrence, a friend and owner of Cardiff salon Glo and Stephanie, a stylist at Blu assisted Lawrence and I on Erian, Charlotte and Gabby’s looks. Did you all enjoy the shoot? Even with the time constraints, we all managed to have a laugh. It’s great when you work as a team and you’re allowed to let the creative juices flow.

Cardiff and South Wales based make-up artist With a name like Victoria Valentine, Vicci could have her choice of vocations - classic Hollywood or period drama actress or perhaps even make-up artist. Lucky for us she chose the latter! Victoria came to our attention via recommendation. Always the best way I think, when your reputation precedes you. We were lucky that she had managed to rearrange her diary to fit us in. It was quite a chilly morning when we met and, armed with her suitcase of make-up goodies, we made our way to Blu to meet the others. No sooner than the introductions were made, and a further brief on the looks we were hoping to achieve, Vicci got to work on the first model. Each model’s make-up normally takes a good half an hour and, given the time we had, Vicci managed to make each girl look beautiful. With smoky eyes and deep lips, the look was perfect. With each outfit change, Vicci was on hand to tweek and titivate, ready for the photographer.

Make-up has been a passion of Vicci’s since early education. She has a keen interest in art, fashion and textiles and this led her to a degree in media makeup. She studied at the University of Plymouth and trained in areas including TV, theatre, fashion and editorial makeup, body painting, hair styling and wig making. Vicci has worked on projects including shoots, fashion events, trade shows, catwalks and general editorial work. She also offers make-up lessons including consultation, application and personalised face chart. ❧ 48 ❧

Hawkes Essentials style, comfort, quality We’ve all been there. We’ve trudged through the city looking for a suit for the big day and all that the High Street stores can offer are illfitting, bland and boring numbers made of synthetic material which, when worn are often itchy and uncomfortable, only to come home minus said suit, feeling deflated and dreading the thought of having to go back into town for another go. Well, gentlemen, the solution is Hawkes Essentials. Owner Russell ScottLawson and his trusted team can build or hire you a suit which will fit the bill perfectly and elicit favourable comments from friends, family and many other wedding guests Don’t just take our word - here’s what one very satisfied customer had to say: “Just wanted to write and thank you for all your help and advice and for dressing me and my ‘men of honour’ so finely and smart on my wedding day. As you know, Ruth loved the suit, and everyone commented on how amazing all the lads looked. CA RD IF F

With summer come and gone, our attention turns from gardens and outdoor activities, to cocooning and the home interiors. So now is a great time to put into action plans for the revamp and refurbishment of that tired living room, or freshening up the bedroom with new furnishings, throws, and cushions.

CUSHIONING THE FALL Elaine Jones Interiors may be a new business in the historic heart of Llantwit Major but Elaine is no newcomer to interior design. Here she shares with us how she can help us bring life back into our homes from her beautifully bijou new showroom, packed with wonderful fabrics, wall coverings, and ideas to get the creative juices flowing! What is your background? Having moved back to my home town of Llantwit Major, six years ago, I worked as a personal interior soft furnisher and am now delighted to have opened a showroom in the historic heart of the town, providing a bespoke and personal service for all home and soft furnishing requirements, bought together in one showroom. I work on the principle that all of my clients deserve the best. If I can’t live with it, I don’t expect my clients to. Who are your clients and why do they come to you? My clients expect and receive a wonderful, spoilt level of personal and strictly confidential service, from concept to completion with attention to detail. They want individuality. Each and every design, down to the curtain headings are created and carried through by me. I source soft furnishings, lighting, home accessories, in fact, anything the client may want for the home in one showroom, at very competitive prices.

“I work on the principle that all of my clients deserve the best. If I can’t live with it, I don’t expect my clients to.”

Where do your clients come from? Mostly personal recommendations from clients I have worked for, covering west Wales to Newport and up the M4.

One of Wales’ largest independent bathroom retailers has just completed one of its biggest transformations in 57 years of successful trading.

DIDN’T THEY SCRUB UP WELL! To compete and stay ahead of the competition, the Cardiff Bathroom Centre has completely renovated and refreshed both the brand identity and the huge Cardiff showroom to put them in a fantastic position for the future.

Keith Ryall, Managing Director commented‚ “We felt that in order to compete with the big national suppliers, it was vital to get across our own unique selling points so that customers could make an informed choice.”

What started out as a builders’ merchants has evolved into one of the most impressive bathroom showrooms in the country with over a hundred displays on show plus hundreds more accessories and associated products to choose from. It was a mammoth task, but in order to build on the customer focussed ideals this family-run business adopted all those years ago, it was essential in securing a long-term future.

This attitude has always been at the heart of what Cardiff Bathroom Centre believes in. Their own in-house designers replace conventional salespeople and this design-led approach ensures customers get the bathroom of their dreams.

Being a local independent retailer, competing against large multi-nationals, a new website has been created. This is not a typical online shop, however, as it has never been in the company’s plans to utilise this type of price-led, off-the-shelf approach. Whilst they compete with any company on price, it is the design aspect that is really at the heart of what they are about.

Anthony Ryall said, “We take the time and effort to really get to know the customer and this ensures they get the advice and ideas needed to create a bathroom that is both stunning and functional. We are also able to help the customer decide that what looks great in the showroom, will also look great in their home through our 3D visuals, this really makes sure the customer gets exactly what they want, at a price they can afford.”

Upgrade your smile with Invisalign From teeth whitening to gum reshaping, the new advances in cosmetic dentistry mean we can all get an A-list look for less. We speak to leading dental practitioners Dr Kevin Gracias and Dr Amir Koochek of Cathays Dental in Cardiff about achieving one treatment that can help us get that celebrity smile. Invisalign, one of the new straightening techniques available can be used on teenagers and adults. It offers those who are self-conscious of their teeth a way to straighten them, without the obvious aesthetics of the brace. In fact Invisalign is barely visible and can be used on a variety of problematic teeth.

“If you’re self conscious about your smile, then the best way to deal with this is by straightening your teeth. Not only can this correct the crookedness, it can also help your teeth become healthier.”

Who does Invisalign work best for? Not everyone is lucky enough to be born with perfect teeth. Some of us have a crooked smile. Some people might think this adds character to the face but, if you’re self conscious about your smile, then the best way to deal with this is by straightening your teeth. Not only can this correct the crookedness, it can also help your teeth become healthier. A problem that we commonly see is that of overcrowding, where there is a lack of room in your jaw for all of your teeth. This can lead to an increased likelihood of you developing gum disease as teeth that are too close together are not as easy to clean, making it more likely that you’ll develop plaque and tartar in the hard to reach areas, which can lead to gingivitis and gum disease. Another common issue is widely spaced teeth, where there is too much room in your jaw. Whilst this problem is slightly better than an overcrowded mouth, it can be harmful as it can lead tilting and drifting of teeth, which can affect your bite and can lead to gum problems. Other problems we see include overbite, where the top teeth are too far over the bottom and overjet where the top teeth are too far forward over the bottom. This is mainly due to genetics but can easily be solved with aligners or braces. If left untreated, this can cause tooth wear, irritable gums and increased risk of damage to the upper teeth. ❧ 60 ❧

Then there is the reverse overjet, where the lower teeth stick out past the front teeth, often causing pain and discomfort as it stops the front teeth from completing their job. Lastly, there’s the cross bite, which occurs when the top and bottom jaws are askew. This can cause facial asymmetry and jaw ache, especially in the jaw joints and can make eating and chewing difficult. What’s the solution to these problems? Invisalign. Just like braces, Invisalign can help solve all of these problems, without being visible to the outside world. Would I be a suitable candidate? To find out if you are suitable for Invisalign, please call for a no obligation assessment. Once we have established if you are a suitable candidate, we can discuss your treatment options. Do you offer payment plans? Cathays Dental offers payment plans to help with the costs of your dental treatment. A specialist private hospital on the outskirts of Newport has relaunched with new facilities, more services and treatments and a growing team of top flight consultants and surgeons.

CELTIC SPRINGS Celtic Springs Clinic, formerly the Nucleus Healthcare, specialist gastroenterology hospital, is launching a new cosmetic surgery practice to complement the existing range of diagnostic, medical and surgical specialties already on offer at the purposebuilt facility, which is just two minutes off the M4 motorway at junction 28. The new cosmetic surgery service sees the prominent Cosmetic Surgery Partners establish its South Wales centre at Celtic Springs Clinic, led by world-renowned reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon, Miles Berry. “I am excited by the facilities that Celtic Springs Clinic has on offer for patients,” says Mr Berry. “This modern hospital has an amazing Matron-led nursing team and offers comfortable, clean and welcoming in-patient and out-patient facilities which are second to none. Some private facilities which offer general surgery are often not able to meet the specific requirements of a cosmetic surgery practice. Celtic Springs Clinic, on the other hand, lends itself perfectly to our particular needs.”

The private hospital is recognised and recommended by health insurance providers for a range of specialist procedures such as laparoscopic hernia repair and, exclusively in Wales, advanced capsule endoscopy. Already known as a centre of excellence for bariatric (weight loss) treatments including gastric band surgery and the exclusive non-surgical Spatz adjustable gastric balloon, Celtic Springs Clinic aims to offer patients a holistic body image service with the addition of cosmetic surgery. Chief Executive Officer David Harrop spoke proudly of the facility, saying “Our ethos of unparalleled levels of care, commitment and medical excellence makes us a hospital of choice for patients and consultants alike. We are looking at increasing the range of services and treatments we offer, giving patients access to private healthcare and wellbeing services which address the whole gamut of lifestyle and age-related conditions. Importantly, we are committed to working with local healthcare professionals and the NHS as a whole to add real value to our community and the services they need.”

The hospital has ten in-patient en suite bedrooms and four comfortable outpatient consulting rooms, all overseen by dedicated nursing staff under the management of experienced matron, Lynda Reardon. In addition to providing consultations for patients in Wales seeking the full range of cosmetic surgery procedures, Mr Berry will undertake breast augmentation and eyelid surgery, liposuction and cutting-edge CO2RE laser treatments at Celtic Springs Clinic, bringing his Harley Street skills to Wales for the first time. The newly named Celtic Springs Clinic will also continue to offer advanced gastroenterology diagnostic procedures, treatments and surgery from its advanced laparoscopic surgery theatres and endoscopy suites, giving patients access to unparalleled facilities and consultants.

Premier Driveways & Landscapes

Last Night at the Proms in aid of Organ Appeal

Since 1993 Premier Driveways & Landscapes have been improving the homes and lives of residents in the Vale of Glamorgan and South Wales.

On Saturday 8th September, the Cardiff Concert Orchestra performed a ‘Last Night at the Proms’ Concert at All Saints’ Church, Barry in aid of their Organ Appeal.

The company, which has three full time qualified staff, provide full garden landscaping services including design, garden walling, patios and block paved driveways. To see how your property could be transformed, a full gallery can be found on the company’s website. 1 Hollyhock Drive, Bridgend CF31 2NS 01656 767172 or 07866 458360 mark@premdrives.co.uk www.premdrives.co.uk

The two year appeal was launched in May 2011 with a target of £70,000 needed for repair and refurbishment to the large, historic organ. Impressively, through donations, grants, an ongoing programme of fundraising events plus a pipe sponsorship scheme, more than £56,000 has now been raised.

The Church had been decorated for the evening with bunting and flags and the enthusiastic audience really got into the swing of Last Night at the Proms favourites including Pomp & Circumstance, Land of Hope & Glory and Jerusalem with much flag waving enjoyed by all! It was certainly an evening to remember.

Ann Elliott, Events Co-ordinator, welcomed the audience and introduced leader, Derek Mascall and conductor, Phil Roberts. The Fund-raising Committee were delighted to welcome Cardiff Concert Orchestra in support of this worthy appeal and a packed church of concert-goers enjoyed a memorable programme including the overture to the film West Side Story, Paul McCartney’s Live & Let Die, pieces by Grace Williams, Vaughan-Williams and many more.

Before the finale, Suzanne Grover of the Fund-raising Committee expressed thanks to the audience for their support, to all who had helped in the planning and organisation, to advertisers in the programme & to the Little Blue Deli, Barry, for donation of interval refreshments.

Where the best clothes hang out! With lives being so busy these days, there never seems to be enough time to do the laundry. Luckily for us there’s The Laundry Rooms. No more washing, drying or ironing chores thanks to Claire and Paul Hartery. What are your backgrounds? Both Paul and I are from completely different career backgrounds to the laundry industry. Between us we have over 35 years management experience with in Molson Coors Brewers. We have worked within sales, training and technical departments. All of these years within such a personal development focused company really built our confidence and capability to take on a business of our own. A six month sabbatical was agreed for Claire which helped us step into self employment whilst retaining support from Molson Coors. Why did you set up the business? We are somewhat of a ‘Remington Razor’ story as we liked the existing company so much we bought it! Working such long hours and being away with work the collection service was a must. I was amazed how easier my life became and how I could claim back my family and leisure time!

How many people do you employ? Our small, but busy, business supports six local ladies, part-time. Plus we are encouraging positive youth experience by employing three young chaps for shop/delivery work and we’ve had really good feedback about this.

“Our mainstay is ironing, including our popular free collection and delivery service.”

What services does The Laundry Rooms offer? Our services include: same day service wash and/or dry, which is a must for our ‘summers’ and busy people, dry cleaning, commercial wash/dry. We do a lot of business with hair salons, pet shops, B&Bs etc. Our mainstay is ironing, including our popular free collection and delivery service. We’re also now offering a collect and return ironing services to customer’s place of work. We have just introduced an alteration/ repair service to complete our wide range of services. What are your plans for the future? We are looking to target specific gaps in the market and to create new service products which include, a week’s worth of gents shirts, washed, dried and ironed for £10, a collect and deliver laundry service for new mums (we know how busy they can be) and a laundry service for hospitals and our more elderly or infirm customers. The same day wash and dry offer is proving a real hit with busy people looking to save both their time and energy costs.

Where are you based? We are based in Cadoxton, Barry which is a really positive move because this is one of the areas in the Vale which needs proactive rejuvenation. We hope that our business and several other new businesses investing here may encourage other businesses to set up here too. The community spirit is strong here and it’s easily accessible with great parking for customer.

We love to receive feedback from our customers as to what service they require - this drives new ideas which all of us love to trial. We have reviewed our carbon footprint in conjunction with energy costs which has resulted in solar panel installation. We actively encourage recycling in The Laundry Rooms from hangers to cardboard and have adopted an environment policy. Penarth based insurance brokers, Motts Insurance, celebrates over 45 years in business with landmark apprentice schemes and expansion plans.

TRIED & TESTED The reputable family firm, headed by Managing Director Ben Mott, has been running from the heart of Penarth since 1966. The firm was set up by Ben’s father, Ron Mott, and has been a constant in the town’s business community since 1966. With plans to bring graduates and school-leavers on board for apprenticeships in insurance and mortgage roles, the next 12 months will be an exciting time for the familyrun business based on Plassey Street. The insurance firm has another cause for celebration with the recent insurance deal agreed with neighbouring seaside residents the Glendale Hotel. The deal with the hotel, another Penarth landmark, sees extensive insurance cover provided to the hotel and restaurant which has been running in the Vale of Glamorgan town for over 20 years. MD Ben Mott spoke proudly of the company’s achievements “When my Dad set the company up in 1966, the aim was to provide a bespoke insurance policies to the local community at a fair price. I am thrilled to be able to boast that those ethics still ring true in Motts Insurance today. I can only put our success down to our loyal clients, and dedicated staff – many of which have been with us for over 15 years.” Self confessed foodie Ben, who regularly hunts Michelin starred restaurants when he has time away from the business, expressed his aims in regards to local businesses. “The cover we’re providing to the Glendale Hotel demonstrates what we want to do achieve with local businesses. We want long term partnerships that benefit both parties.”

With many local and family-ran businesses going bust these past few years, it certainly is refreshing to see a firm riding the waves of their own success. “For over 45 years Motts Insurance has been at the heart of Penarth, and the business landscape in the Vale of Glamorgan, and we will strive to continue our commitment to remain in place for another 45 years – I just hope I’m retired my then!” continued Mott. Speaking of the partnership with Motts, Glendale Hotel owner Toney Apollonio said, “I couldn’t be happier. With Motts Insurance, I’m safe in the knowledge that all my insurance is taken care of efficiently and professionally. I have used Motts for a number of years; both for business and my personal policies. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. It’s fantastic that we have a great commercial and personal relationship with a firm that is only a few streets away.” Realising the busy and complex nature of the hotel and restaurant business, Ben went on to say, “Businesses appreciate our attention to detail and the passion we have for the industry, quite simply we listen to what they require and deliver on both price and quality.” Nobody can criticise Motts for not giving back to the community of Penarth, with local spirit epitomising their commercial responsibility with charity donations to local causes such as Ty Hafan, and sponsorship of local football leagues underlining their generosity. Ben represents the business at local networking organisations and is keen to communicate with businesses in and around Cardiff.

He said, “We always knew there was a niche in the market for a good commercial insurance broker to meet the needs of local hotels and restaurants, we just needed to be out there meeting decision makers. Thankfully for us, being in the right place at the right time is starting to pay dividends.” “The view is to bring in new blood to sustain the ethics and principles of our business. We firmly believe in investing in people, and our staff retention reflects this. It frustrates me when I deal with businesses and I have a different point of contact every 12 months. I don’t want that for us, and am glad we manage to keep our staff happy and professionally motivated enough for them to stay with us for the long term,” explained Mott. The insurance firm is also one step ahead of most of its competitors by being pro-active on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. “We took the decision to move in to the 21st century and start to build a presence online. We answer questions on insurance and are happy to give advice on mortgages too. Hopefully that will enable us to be at the forefront of people’s minds when they want impartial and wellinformed advice from a friendly family-run firm with strong ethics,” continued Mott.

Why did you choose to work with Jelf? Were you aware of their reputation? Having worked in the insurance industry myself I have been aware of Jelf and their excellent reputation for some time. I chose to work with the company because I believed that they were best placed to understand and deal with my specific requirements. What work have they done for you? Jelf provides all of my insurance, not just personal cover for my home, possessions and cars, but also for the businesses that I own, including the Cardiff Devils. What are your impressions of the services they provide? I work long hours and I know that I can get in touch with my contact at Jelf at any time – sometimes on evenings and weekends if urgent. There’s really nothing better than a personal recommendation for a salon than that of a genuine customer. We met with Rebekah Davies, a longstanding customer of Hairs ‘n’ Graces in Talbot Green to find out why she is such an ardent fan of the salon.

TRIED & TESTED What do you like about the salon? The salon is always pristine and has a contemporary feel which I like. I find it very relaxing and professional. They provide refreshments to suit all requirements. The salon is open six days a week until 7pm most evenings and will always accommodate my requests, making my life less stressed, as I have to work around a very busy personal and business life. How long have you been going to Hairs ‘n’ Graces? I’ve been a client for 18 months. What made you choose this salon? I asked a friend of mine, who always had great hair, where she had it done as I was so impressed. I was previously working in Cardiff and wanted somewhere more local for my hair and full beauty treatments. I wanted to retain the quality, experienced service and welcoming atmosphere in which to relax and enjoy my treatments and Hairs ‘n’ Graces provide all three!

What treatments do you have? Hair cut and treatments, hair colour, Gelish nails, Minx, tanning (using Xen Tan), waxing, and Prescriptive facials. I use all of the Dermalogica skincare range which I buy from the salon as well as the quality hair care products as prescribed by the experienced stylists. Which stylists do you see for your treatments? Janelle Aziz, sees to the colour and blow drying of my hair, Louise Baldwin cuts it and Amy Preece attends to all of my beauty treatments.

The staff appreciate that people are busy and are happy to accommodate beauty treatments whilst hair is also being attended to, saving valuable time when needed. Not only do they give professional, honest advice but are great value for money. The friendly and pleasant atmosphere amongst all staff makes the whole experience a pleasure. They even have a customer loyalty scheme which shows appreciation to their clients and incentive treatments and schemes when purchasing products and booking hair treatments. Would you recommend the salon? I have recommended many friends and colleagues in the past and will continue to do so. I am confident that anyone, both male and female, will always receive an excellent, professional service and fantastic value for money, with opening hours to suit your needs.

“Excellent, professional service and fantastic value for money.”

THE BE N E FI T S ■ Releases and increases office space ■ Supports disaster recovery plans ■ Convenient retrieval 100 yards from your office suite ■ Records stored off-site ■ Flexible terms ■ Easy in-out access

Are you finding space for staff increasingly hard to come by? Are you fed up of being surrounded by stored paperwork or archive records?

OFFICE SOLUTIONS Businesses everywhere are trying to reduce their overheads so it makes no sense at all paying for space that is simply a warm home for archive files or documents your business is either legally obliged to keep or you need to refer to occasionally. James Mason, Centre Manager at The Business Centre in Barry, talks to us about a new service that will help businesses to save more money and free up space.

How far is the document storage away from the office suites and how flexible is the access? The storage space at Space Centre is a mere three minute walk from The Business Centre where all our flexible serviced office suites are situated. In terms of access, The Business Centre can provide 24 hour access to all office suite clients with 5 days a week (8am to 5.30pm) access for archive storage at Space Centre.

Why did you launch this service? We understand the need to utilise every inch of office space to generate profit. Businesses need space for employees more than they do for records and archives. It’s actually nothing new, we’ve been offering the service to tenants since day one, we just haven’t been shouting about it. How does the service work? The Business Centre can provide flexible serviced office space with established archive and document storage at another of our companies, Space Centre, which is just opposite us on the estate. We can provide archive storage solutions that provide clients with an efficient and safe way of storing and retrieving data or records quickly and accurately with flexible terms.

“Businesses need space for employees more than they do for records and archives.” ❧ 70 ❧

Will my documents and files be totally secure and confidential? Archive and document storage at Space Centre is totally secure within single, lockable rooms which include rack space. We ensure that all documents are kept completely confidential within your designated space. What is the shortest agreement you provide for the archive storage and office suites and will cancellation notice need to be given? The archive storage and office suites are provided on a minimum three month agreement and just one month notice is needed to end the agreement. We believe that in the challenging economic climate, flexibility is the key for businesses to operate successfully without long term commitments. How important is your location? We are conveniently located on the eastern outskirts of Barry; ideal for companies who operate in the Vale or want easy access to Cardiff without the hassle and inconvenience of a daily commute and costly parking.

For businesses starting up who want to fix their costs and to maximise the profitability of their business space, we offer a range of very affordable and convenient solutions. “Large sliding windows and a glass viewing pod in each apartment gives an abundance of natural lighting.

A new show home has been launched at Hensol Castle Park, in the Vale of Glamorgan, to mark the last phase of its luxury apartments.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION The quality of the design and construction of the development, which is owned by The Leekes Group, achieved a South Wales LABC Cymru Building Excellence Award, which recognises outstanding standards in the construction industry and excellence across all classes of building. Prices for the last available apartments start at £340,000. Managing director of Hensol Castle Park, Stephen Leeke, says, “The show home gives would-be purchasers a window into the lifestyle that they could achieve. We’ve kept colours natural with pockets of colour, and made the most of the natural light that floods into the apartment from the large windows so that people can really get the sense of space that comes as a given.

The show home, which has been designed in a contemporary style with the aim of maximising the abundance of natural light, is located in a three bedroom apartment of Morris House, which together with Llewellyn House, is part of the final release to be unveiled as part of the £35 million development that neighbours the four-star Vale Resort. The show home will be open daily from 11am - 5pm to give would-be buyers an idea of how the finished apartments will look. Morris House, due for completion this Autumn, and Llewellyn House in Spring 2013, comprise spacious two and three bed design-led apartments, refurbished in line with the rest of the award-winning development, consisting of 58 luxury properties within the 150 acre grounds of the Grade I listed 17th century Hensol Castle.

Each apartment, that ranges from 1,431sq ft to 1,950 sq ft, will be furnished with state-of-the-art fittings throughout, including oak wood flooring and climate control airconditioning. The designer fitted kitchens will be installed with Neff appliances, and the bathrooms will include full-height tiling and under-floor heating.

Mr Leeke added, “Hensol Castle Park is the only address that can offer a complete lifestyle package, which includes its proximity to Wales’ highest rated four-star resort, AA Rosette restaurant, spa, leisure club and two award-winning championship golf courses.” The show home will be open daily from 11am - 5pm

A garden room with large sliding windows and a glass viewing pod in each apartment gives an abundance of natural lighting as well as panoramic views of the Castle and its beautiful surroundings, which includes a 20-acre Victorian lake that’s home to swans and otters. Llewellyn House is situated in fully maintained gardens with 24 hour security. Purchasers will also benefit from a 12 month membership to the Vale Resort’s Health and Racquets’ Club.

Approved by Aston Martin, Bentley and Nissan, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the cream of automotive brands is all you’ll see passing through the body shop and spray booth at Davies Motor Company. With winter on the horizon, owner Sean Davies says this is the time when the classics and customs start to arrive in the workshop. We take a look at one of Davies Motors’ latest projects; a 1976 Toyota Celica GT2000. What’s the story behind this particular car Sean? It’s a 1976 Toyota Celica GT2000 RA28. It’s the first generation of the modern Celica you see driving around today. There were several models similar in style and two liftback coupe models like this the ST2000 had a single overhead cam 2 litre engine but this is the very rare GT which had a twin cam 2 litre plus some other upgrades. No ABS, no driver-assist - It’s really fun to drive. It looks a lot like an old Bullitt style Mustang... Yes, it’s affectionately called the poor man’s Mustang. In the early years, Toyota’s styling was ‘influenced’ a lot by the American market. This model is very similar in style to the Mustang driven in the film Bullitt by Steve McQueen. You do see them in Bullitt Highland green occasionally.

Not quite the same colour... No, this is a little less subtle. The base colour is the same as when it came in although it has had a full respray. The owner bought it in that colour and, although he has plans to change the colour completely in the future, he wanted one more season in the existing colour. This was very much a restyle and re-spray exercise with some subtle changes to make the car unique.

Fans of the RA28 GT will spot the subtle treatment around the front grill. The owner wanted the sidelights removed and replaced with new metal to give a cleaner line from the bonnet into the front bumper. He also wanted a competition style petrol cap so we’ve replaced the standard flip cover with a motorcycle locking fuel cap from a Honda Fireblade motorcycle. We also polished and repainted the wheels and colourcoded the bumpers and calipers.

What’s been done exactly? Well, all the wheels and doors came off and the glass was removed. We wanted to make sure it was completely rust-free going forward. We had to be careful as windscreens and rear windows are particularly hard to come by for classic Celicas. The Celica was in great shape but there were some issues with corrosion around the bottom of the front windscreen and the bottom of the tailgate, a known problem area on this particular model, so we’ve completely renewed a section of the tailgate and incorporated a keyless lock which can be opened from the inside by the driver.

Tell us about the paintwork... It’s very retro, very seventies and I’m delighted with the end result. I think the customer is already talking to various national and international magazines about having it featured. He has talked about selling it to get into a new project but I think he’s having second thoughts now.

What other projects are you working on? By the time your readers will see this, we will have completed a full restoration on an MGB and a classic Jaguar XJ will have had the Davies Motors magic but we work on all sorts - from family saloons to top of the line Aston Martins and Bentleys. Honestly, a good sixty percent of our work is standard stuff; Peugeots, Fords, Citroens, Alfas, Audis, Hondas, BMWs - we fix them all. The very poor weather this summer has kept us busy – lots of rain equals lots of business. We get a lot of the usual bumps and shunts to deal with but we treat every car as if it’s a Porsche, Bentley or Mercedes. Every customer’s car gets the five star treatment - it’s the only way we know how to work. Havard & Havard - a love affair with antiques Philip and Christine opened their shop in Cowbridge nearly 21 years ago and during that time they have helped their customers create characterful and stylish homes. Philip has both a love and extensive knowledge of Welsh Country furniture; he will only buy those pieces that he believes represent the best that Wales produced. During the 18th and 19th century, Wales produced some of the most distinctive and, now, desirable furniture. Using hand tools, often utilising woods found on surrounding farms, these craftsmen made items for the yeoman classes of the day. The furniture speaks to us from a time that although long gone resonates with our more romantic yearnings. The shop and garden display a strong design element, with quirky and decorative items from the past, these pieces add a unique touch to the home that cannot be bought on the high street. The Havards are more than happy to discuss with you how you might use antiques, to create a very special interior that is both distinctive and unique. Co-founder Karen Ingram, who had previously undergone back surgery, said, “I spent years trying to get myself well after a decade of chronic back problems and pain. I eventually found what worked for me which led to Barefoot Studio. Osteopathy and sports massage helped the back spasms, Pilates rebuilt strength and I no longer needed a second operation. Wearing the right footwear, like MBT’s, protected me while I walked. Liquorice Laces toasts its second birthday It was smiles all round as Liquorice Laces celebrated its second year trading this August. There was no time for cakes and candles though, with so many feet to measure and fit for Back to School shoes with a bit of continental flair. Jeff and Nikki also took Liquorice Laces on the road, with a stall at the National Eisteddfod and the International Sheepdog Trials in Bonvilston this year. “We met so many new customers who loved our range of coats, welly boots and PJ’s, not to mention our gorgeous gourmet liquorice!” A passion for great products, many with added features and benefits drive the search for the perfect range for kids in Cowbridge and the choice is constantly evolving. Camper shoes for kids joined a great line up of brands this summer and proved a great hit with kids and parents alike. As Autumn days shorten, boots both short and long are in big demand. Don’t be fooled by looks alone though. Plenty of styles offer breathable, waterproof membranes and warm linings for extra comfort.

With over 25 years of retail management behind her, Co-Director Nikki is really clear that independent shops can offer a much more memorable experience for both adults and kids alike. A really easy to navigate website means customers can check out the choice and phone ahead to see if a particular shoe is in stock (a good idea for many customers who are willing to drive over an hour to visit the shop). Jeff is really committed to growing the business in the town. “Cowbridge is such a lovely destination. Free car parking close by and ducks to feed just outside the shop mean parents and kids love visiting. We certainly love trading here.” ❧ 79 ❧

From Haus to home form and function When looking to redesign one room or the whole house, hands up who first thought of Maskreys to do the job? That’s no surprise, the iconic store had the lion’s share of this business for many, many years. Lucky for us then that two former employees Vivian Llewellyn and Gail Jones set up their own interior design business in the bustling village of Rhiwbina over a year ago. Haus specialises in made-to-measure curtains and blinds, curtain tracks and poles, wallpaper and home accessories. They’ve kept in touch with former employees of Maskreys who have since started their own businesses and work with them to offer additional services such as carpets and flooring, an upholsterer and a French polisher. Whilst they may not be as big as Maskreys once was, they can offer the same services. Maskreys was renowned for sourcing unique contemporary brands and products and, luckily, they have managed to do the same with brands from Sweden, Germany, Belgium and France.

They can also offer the more traditional, classic look if that’s what the customer requires and feels more comfortable with. We asked Gail and Vivian why they specifically chose Rhiwbina to set up their business. “We really wanted to be in a vibrant, busy and lively environment and, after an extensive search, found the perfect village and premises on the high street. There is a great mix of small independent businesses here and there’s a good feel to the place. It’s a joy to be here and shop here.” ❧ 83 ❧

In the current economic climate it’s proving to be very difficult for many people to move home and, with the ageing population and first time buyers not being able to afford their own home, today’s typical household can consist of the extended family. With more space being needed to cater for this trend, the only way for many to cope is by extending what space they currently have. This is where Taliesin Architecture comes in. This young and vibrant company, has a wealth of experience in domestic and commercial architecture, creating dynamic concepts that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The company likes to work collaboratively with clients to provide designs that combine architecture, technology, art and the natural environment. They are mindful of budgets and are equally excited to work on big projects as well as those with a more conservative budget. Although based in a small village, their work is called for throughout Wales and London. If it’s an extension to your existing home, a re-design of the home or workplace, a one-off building project or the development of a large residential or commercial project, Taliesin Architecture has all of the elements required to successfully guide you through any project, to time and on budget. When only bespoke quality will do, Rathkey’s crafstmanship and service may be just the right choice for you.

ONLY BESPOKE Vale Life spoke with owner Paul Rathkey to find out why customers choose him and what it is that makes Rathkey’s kitchens so special. Paul, what’s your role in Rathkey’s? I manage and organise a team of staff and ensure the safe and creative crafting of bespoke furniture to the client’s requirement. I meet clients at their homes or premises and discuss in detail what their options are and put forward ideas. Where did you train? Rycotewood College, where I gained a diploma in Furniture & Design. I was then head hunted by David Linley Furniture, the owner, of which is Viscount Linley, the Queen’s nephew, and I worked there for the next ten years making fine bespoke furniture for some very rich and famous people.

Describe your typical day From the moment I arrive in work, at 8am most days, I begin by answering phonecalls and meet with the team to ensure they all have enough work to keep themselves busy through the day. I also have to make sure that all orders for materials are placed in plenty of time so that we have the correct stock and materials to complete the jobs we have. In between all of this I visit clients to discuss projects and, back on site, answer any enquiries and liaise with the team regarding any technical issues that may arise. Do you see any trends developing? Recently, the call for contemporary furniture as opposed to traditional furniture has been in higher demand, working with more oak and walnut furniture. A large proportion of our work is for bespoke kitchens in natural timber or hand-painted finishes. ❧ 86 ❧

Do you enjoy your job? I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products. I love the feel of the timber when the furniture is completed and enjoy seeing the faces of satisfied customers, many of whom have become firm friends. How do you get most of your work? We are pleased to say that we have had regular work and are very lucky that clients have highly recommended us to new potential customers, even allowing us to show clients their houses and the quality of work we produce. What are your future plans? To continue to give an excellent service to our clients.

“I was head hunted by David Linley.”

Whether you’re an enthusiastic amateur or a timeserved gardening expert, there’s always plenty of things to do to get the best from your garden. Rob Hodge gives us his top Autumn tips.

FLOREBUNDUS! This year I’ve been gardening for exactly 40 years and quite often people will ask me what my favourite flower is, it can vary from season to season but ultimately it’s got to be the Passion Flower. The Passion Flower or Passiflora as its known in Latin, Passus meaning suffering and Flora meaning flower is a plant that was discovered by early Spanish Roman Catholic Priests in South America. On finding it they noticed the plants features resembled the symbols of the crucifixion. Thus the five stamens were the five wounds of Christ; the three stigmas, the three nails; the style in the centre, the flogging column; the corona, which is the outer ring, the crown of thorns; the fingered leaves, the hand of the multitude; the coiled tendrils, the flogging cords and the five petals and five sepals, the ten disciples. Obviously, it was exactly what the priests were looking for and from then on it was known as the Passion Flower. It’s at this point plant names and their meanings start to become more than just a label. Latin is merely a universal language that describes plants and animals so no matter what part of the world you come from it’s exactly the same description, which can’t be said for common names of plants which are going to be different in every country. Another example of a plant that everybody can recognise is Lavender. In Latin it’s name is Lavandula, which derives from the Latin word, lavo, meaning to wash. The Romans and Greeks used Lavender in their baths, hence, the little room that we all have to use now has become the lavatory, and lavender is used to make it smell a little sweeter.

“Latin is merely a universal language that describes plants and animals.” ❧ 88 ❧

The more we look the more we discover, the next time we cook with lamb and we need a sprig of Rosemary think a little more deeply as to why it’s name is what it is. In Latin it’s name is Rosmarinus, ros or rose meaning spray and marinus meaning sea, referring to a plant that inhabits sea cliffs and lives in the spray of the sea. The next time you go on holiday in the Mediterranean and walk on the clifftops have a look out for Rosemary. You’ll be surprised that it does actually grow on the cliffs in the spray of the sea. Plant names are not all as interesting and simple as these but it’s all out there for you to discover. Rob Hodge Horticulture 01633 744075 www.robhodgehorticulture.co.uk

With wonderful green spaces and country parks, The Valleys are achieving well-deserved recognition for their quality and welcome. From world-class mountain biking to more leisurely cycling; exhilarating hillwalking to simply strolling; discovering new activities to uncovering hidden heritage; watching wildlife to hunting for treasure. They are waiting to be to be explored on foot, on bike, on horse. So, what are you waiting for? Get out and enjoy!

RIDING HIGH Afan Forest - just one of the Valleys’ superb mountain biking venues

FLYING THE FLAG FOR THE VALLEYS Flying the flag for The Valleys are ten more country parks and attractions to join those existing ones whose high quality has already been recognised with the award of a prestigious Green Flag. Dare Valley Country Park is one of the magnificent new flag bearers with a whole host of exciting things to do and see in its 500 acres of countryside within easy reach of Aberdare town centre. Opened in 1973, it was the first-ever country park in Britain to be developed on reclaimed land. Once, nineteen pits and drift mines ravaged the countryside, but nowadays, there are two lakes with wonderful woods and wild flowers in abundance. A variety of trails guides you through the park with superb vantage points en route including those from Tarren y Bwllfa where peregrines, the fastest diving birds on the planet, glide and stoop for prey.

For those who like to mix history, mystery and technology as part of their countryside experience, there is a new Geocaching trail at Dare Valley, one of a series of themed trails right across the valleys developed through the Valleys Regional Park Programme with support from the European Regional Development Fund through Welsh Government. Essentially an outdoor treasure hunt using smart phones, Geocaching has an estimated 5 million enthusiasts worldwide. Other geocaching venues in the Valleys include the Waterfall Walks at Pontneddfechan and on the Ebbw Fach Trail around Guardian at Six Bells, Abertillery. In Aberdare town centre itself, now newly accessible from Dare Valley Country Park via the new Gadlys Bridge, a new audio heritage trail allows visitors and locals to discover where the first National Eisteddfod took place, where a pioneer of cinema first showed his films, and why Aberdare was once known as the ‘Athens of Wales’ amongst other highlights.

Hidden Heritage

One of the great things about exploring the Valleys is the wonderful mix of often unique cultural and natural heritage. Our walk at Dare Valley along the former track of the Taff Vale Railway (above) took us past one of the last remnants of the former Dare Valley viaduct (below).

Dare Valley Country Park Image courtesy of RCT

Constructed in timber at over 450 feet in length and 70 feet in height, it was designed by the Isambard Kingdom Brunel to carry the Dare and Aman Branch of Vale of Neath Railway. The branch shut in 1939 and both the Dare Viaduct and the nearby Gamlyn Viaduct at Penywaun, the last of Brunel’s timber framed viaducts in existence, were dismantled sadly in 1947.

The Green Flag Award® is the nationally accredited benchmark quality standard for provision of greenspace in the UK recognising and rewarding the very best green spaces. Only top quality green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible to win an award through the scheme, which is funded and supported in Wales by the Welsh Government, The Countryside Council for Wales, the Design Commission for Wales, and Environment Agency Wales. If wildlife watching, heritage hunting or even hill walking is perhaps just a little too sedate for your tastes, then the Valleys have some of the most fantastic mountain biking in the world whether you’re new to it or a real trail warrior. Through Cognation, new developments at Afan Forest Park and Cwmcarn Forest, as well as the proposed one at Gethin Woods near Merthyr, aim to make south Wales the premier destination for mountain biking in the UK. And the exceptional standard of the trails as well as other activities and facilities at Afan Forest and Cwmcarn Forest have now also been recognised with the award of a Green Flag.

Garwnant - another Green Flag Winner Image by Luke Maggs

Set in over 400 acres of beautiful woodland, another new Green Flag winner is Garwnant, just off the A470 between Merthyr and Brecon. It also offers excellent walking and biking opportunities with a dedicated Mini Mountain Bike Skills Park that has a series of child-friendly obstacles designed especially to improve skills and build confidence.

The more tranquil nature trails at Garwnant allow visitors to take it a little easier if wanted and another of its family-friendly activities include the Animal Puzzle Trail, which starts from the visitor centre and follows part of the Willow Walk. If all the activity makes you hungry, the centre serves excellent fresh local produce at its Terrace Restaurant with spectacular views overlooking Llwyn Onn reservoir. Llyn Llech Owain Country Park close to Cross Hands in the Gwendraeth Valley is already the holder of a Green Flag Award. At its heart is a lake surrounded by a peat bog, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A network of footpaths, many accessible to wheelchair users, provides enjoyable walking whilst there is also a mountain bike trail and a bridleway. The national Green Flag Community Award® recognises high-quality green spaces in the UK which are managed by voluntary and community groups. Groundwork in Wales, with the support of Marks and Spencer and the WECAN project, is working with community groups to increase the number of Green Flag Community sites in Wales. Over twenty sites in the valleys have newly been submitted for judging in the autumn. With an ever increasing number of high-quality green spaces and country parks, the Valleys are continuing to change rapidly with stunning countryside and exciting activities for all close at hand. ❧ 91 ❧

THE LAST WORD In our Last Word series, we catch up with Vale photographer Natasha Jenkins. Natasha talks to us about her style of photography, what she really loves to photograph and her phobia of snails. Who are you and what do you do? I am Natasha Jenkins, a photographer based in the Vale, specialising in contemporary lifestyle imagery. What makes you different to other photographers? I think that I am a friendly and approachable person. My style reflects on a fine art and documentary style of photography. I have a discreet and informal reportage style for weddings. I work on a documentary style - telling the story from the beginning of the day to the end, capturing meaningful images from the people, atmosphere, smiles and tears, exchange of rings and the all important wedding party groups. Who do you like photographing most? Definitely weddings. Everyone is happy, dressed up and the atmosphere is great. Maternity and newborn shoots also make me smile as being a mum of a four year old and a one year old, I can really relate to new parents and also parents with other children. I feel that it’s extremely important that older siblings get made a big fuss of and feel included when the new baby arrives.

Who are your customers? Mostly couples and families for portraits. Other clients of mine include hair dressers, event companies, schools-playgroups and various charities. I have done some more abstract work for design agencies and architects. More recently I have had the pleasure of being invited to photograph weddings for the Muslim community. Where is your client base? Largely the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff, although I have travelled as far afield as Manchester and London. What do you love most about work? The diversity. I love the taking of the photograph, then editing and printing it’s an enjoyable process. I think my favourite part is just seeing the faces of the clients when I present their pictures to them. I also love the kind and thoughtful words that I receive.

“My favourite part is just seeing the faces of the clients when I present their pictures to them.”

Do you use a studio? I am primarily based at home, where I have all of the equipment and contacts I need to enable me to work effectively. However, I also have access to a studio if requested. Who would you most like to photograph, living or dead? If I had to choose it would be anyone one of the GB Olympic athletes. Any exciting plans for the future? Hopefully complete my masters degree and lots more exciting weddings and events to be invited to! What is your favourite food? Fish, chips and mushy peas, eaten from the paper on Penarth Pier, watching the sea! Sum yourself up in three words Easy going, slightly impulsive and good fun! You may not know this but… I have a snail phobia!
