WELCOME

Well, this year has certainly been one of change for us! We’ve had a name makeover to Good Life Industries, taken on more staff (and lost a couple), started a new title - Gower Life and moving production into new offices in Cowbridge. All exciting stuff! While working from home has its advantages - like being able to work in your onesie (I’m not ashamed to admit it!), and not having to apply the warpaint every day (still holding my hand up!), the downsides are that there’s always washing to put in the machine, always a floor to be mopped and always a pot of stew on the go to feed the hungry workers (not that I mind but I am busy you know guys!). As I write this, we’re not in the offices yet but we can’t wait. It’s nothing flash. Just two rooms for now for production but it’s a big leap for us and Cowbridge isn’t too shabby a place to work from is it? We have welcomed our new sales person, Nigel into the fold. He will be working with us on Vale Life (and bits of City Life). He is fitting in really nicely and I’m sure he will bring lots of experience and new ideas to the mix. Penarth Fashion Week is shaping up really nicely. We’re so thrilled to have been chosen as the sole media sponsor for this event, which I’m sure will be a huge success and one which will grow year on year and will bring additional focus on the vibrant town of Penarth.

When choosing a letting agent, whether you’re a landlord or a tenant, it’s always advisable to choose a reputable one who is a member of a professional organisation and has the personal recommendation of existing clients.

VIEW2R ENT

Gemma Williams-Jones

Gemma Williams-Jones of View2Rent has recently celebrated ten years in business and enjoys an enviable reputation. We caught up with Gemma at the gorgeous new Harbour Bar and Restaurant to find out more. When was View2Rent established? I set up View2Rent in 2007 from our little spare bedroom in our first home and within 12 months I opened our first office on Lias Road. As much as I enjoyed our eight years there, I felt it was time to move on, so in May this year we opened our new office in Porthcawl’s main street. Since moving there, the feedback we’ve had has been fantastic, we absolutely love being in John Street. Why Porthcawl? I’ve lived in Porthcawl all my life and absolutely love it, My family have lived in Porthcawl since 1930 and been in business here since 1954.

My sister has her own boutique The Closet and my brother also has his own business David Evans Garden & Home Improvements, it’s a very proud feeling after all these years as a family we are still in business in our lovely town. Porthcawl has so much to offer with independent businesses, restaurants and bars and the beautiful beaches. No wonder people come for miles to visit. It’s such a lovely town to live in. Who is in the office with you? There are four of us at present. Myself, my husband Sam, Karen is our lettings negotiator and does a fantastic job, Ali has recently joined us and is doing so well at managing all the accounts. They are wonderful members of the team and I’d be lost without them. Plus, we are very fortunate to be able to work with other local professionals, from plumbers to electricians, carpenters and builders, and we count them all as very much part of the View2Rent team. 10

We have always aimed to use local and reputable tradesmen so we can support other independent businesses. Congratulations on your ten year anniversary… Thank you. I really can’t believe how quickly time has gone, I’ve welcomed two amazing little boys in that time too, ten years has just flown by but I’ve loved every second. My grandmother and my dad kindly gave me a gift which enabled me to set up the business. Sadly, my grandmother passed away in 2010 but I know she would be very proud of what I have achieved and how far View2Rent has come and she would have absolutely adored my children. What does View2Rent offer clients? A very honest and reliable service. We are a fully licensed and accredited agency specialising in residential lettings and property management.

VIEW2RENT TESTIMONIALS

Karen Wallis

What clients say... After having a nightmare tenant who left our property in a shocking state, we decided to use a professional agent. Gemma and her team were recommended to us and we quickly understood why. Gemma has updated us throughout the process and within a few weeks View2Rent secured tenants for our property. The communication and overall service has been excellent and we highly recommend View2Rent. J Grabham, Landlord I Recently joined Gemma from View2Rent, to manage my rental properties. I was very nervous changing agents, but I can honestly say she has been very professional and very friendly and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for a decent letting agent. She responds very quickly to emails, and I feel she always has my best interests at heart. If you’re looking for a letting agent in Porthcawl and the surrounding areas, I can assure you, Gemma from View2Rent has proved to me to be one of the best! C Selfridge-Poor, Landlord I was a little anxious when looking for an agent to manage some properties for me as I had heard some real horror stories. I am so pleased that I chose Gemma and her team at View2Rent. They have proved to be a truly professional team. Gemma has been so helpful regarding a variety of issues, I just cannot fault the friendly service provided. Thank you so much Gemma, you are a Gem by name and by nature. H Brown Landlord

Being independent allows us to offer a more bespoke and personal service to our clients. Being local means that we know the area really well and have the working knowledge of the community, local features and amenities. What do you think sets View2Rent apart? That personal touch, we are very proud to be family run and independent. Our clients tell us that they like the friendly, relaxed atmosphere we offer and feel that they can trust us with their needs. When I started the business in 2007 I made a promise to always deliver a highly professional service based on honesty and integrity, and I like to think that’s what I’ve done. It’s easy to say this is what we do, this is what we can offer you, but to be able to actually deliver that service, go above and beyond peoples’ expectations and see the results is something else.

Being the size that we are and the way that we run the business also means that I know every landlord and tenant very well, I have built up a working relationship with each and everyone, if a client needs to speak to me they know they can walk in to the office at any time and see me, that relationship is so important to have. I think our Facebook reviews say a lot about how we run as a family business. We always aim to provide help and support not just a service. Plus, we make great coffee!

“ A very honest and reliable service. We are a fully licensed and accredited agency specialising in residential lettings and property management.” 11

If you ask most parents why they chose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe that their child will a) receive a better standard of education, b) have better opportunities for future careers, c) be more disciplined and d) benefit from smaller pupil-teacher ratios.

ST. CLARE’S SCHOOL Vale Life chats to Simon Antwis, Headmaster at St. Clare’s School in Porthcawl, to find out more. Who does the school cater for? We are a non-selective independent school for boys and girls aged 3 up to 18. We have many students leave our Sixth Form at the end of Year 13 who have been with us since their Nursery days. St. Clare’s School has recently been able to celebrate its performance in the ALIS Value Added data report for 2017 A-Level exams.

What is ALIS? ALIS (Advanced Level Information System) Value-Added analysis tells us how likely students are to achieve particular subject grades as they set out on the journey to post-16 qualifications, and is based upon a child’s average GCSE score and a baseline test. This data allows us to predict what A-Level results each of our students are likely to achieve and, at St. Clare’s, to aim to better those outcomes. What does this actually mean for students? This analysis shows that due to factors such as smaller class sizes, more individual attention and exceptional teaching at St. Clare’s, a student typically expected to achieve BBB grades is actually more likely to achieve ABB with us. 12

This could make all the difference when it comes to UCAS applications and perhaps see students gaining that Russell Group place they wouldn’t otherwise get.

This graph shows the normal distribution for every single school across the UK, both state and independent, and demonstrates just how far above “the average” St Clare’s School is currently sitting for A-Level results.

“In 2017 St. Clare’s out-performed a huge 78% of schools in adding value to a student’s performance with an Average Standard Residual of +0.2!”

M AKES THE GRADE

“I am absolutely delighted with my results. Before Sixth Form I would never have believed I would be opening an envelope to see grades like this.” Josh Williams, 2017

St Clare’s School Newton, Porthcawl CF36 5NR 01656 782509 01656 789966 (Admissions) In 2017, Josh Williams was predicted BBB but was delighted to achieve AAA grades

In 2017, Thomas Hood was predicted BBB but was delighted to achieve AAA grades

In 2017, Matthew Gray was predicted CDD but was delighted to achieve BBD grades 13

Belstaff is a modern, British, heritage brand steeped in the spirit of adventure. Now, thanks to Russell Scott-Lawson of Hawkes, Morgan Arcade, that spirit has arrived in Cardiff.

H AWKES INTRODUCES BELSTAFF Belstaff is iconic. Belstaff was made for the maverick, the fearless explorer and the stylish. Belstaff has a rich 93 year history, yet it is firmly rooted in the present and forever forward focused.

Ewan McGregor, Daniel Craig, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, Liv Tyler, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kristen Stewart, Rihanna, and British racing champions Jackie Stewart, Sammy Miller, Dougie Lampkin and Struan Moore.

Founded in 1924, in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, with the innovation of the first water-resistant wax cotton, Belstaff quickly became embraced by a group relishing the freedom and daring that its fabrics allowed. Belstaff ’s classic belted wax cotton four-pocket jacket became an instantly recognisable staple for the racing set throughout the 20th century.

Russell said, “We generally look for quality over brand, but with Belstaff you get both, I had to buy one as soon as they came in and love it. Although expensive you can tell when you put one on its a life time purchase.”

Over the years, some of the great and the good have worn the brand with pride; from historical titans T.E. Lawrence, Amelia Earhart and Che Guevera to more modern brand ambassadors like David Beckham, 14

Felicity of Bridgend has been a staple part of Bridgend’s high street for over 30 years. The independent retailer is renowned for their wide range of jewellery, luxury Italian imported shoes and handbags, Mother-of-the-bride, bridal accessories and pretty much everything else in-between! From bespoke luxury footwear to antique jewellery, Felicity Bridgend has every accessory you might need. We spoke to the woman behind it all, Felicity Ladbrooke.

FELICITY BRIDGEND You’ve been open for over 30 years then, what’s the journey been like? When I was five, I asked my mum to buy me a shop, little did I ever dream that this would happen! Lo and behold we began as Felicity Shoes and Accessories in 1981. My family had been in business in Bridgend since 1917. The experience that I was conditioned in has been invaluable; customer service has always been forefront in our values, many of my customers have become friends. A few years on, I had the opportunity to expand into the jewellery market, this has been fascinating and I love selling great products to nice people. Our customers’ needs and desires have changed considerably over the last 36 years, but we enjoy sourcing new products and unusual gifts. Keeping our prices affordable and still with our trademark wow customer service.

Tell us about all the wonderful products you have on offer… We sell new and pre-owned jewellery, much of which has come from our customers part exchanges. We have a large collection of Clogau jewellery laced with beautiful rare Welsh gold. We also stock birthstone pieces, gold or silver as well as stunning watch lines from Citizen and Accurist.

We have an excellent goldsmith who works for us. He is skilled to meet all your needs such as chain repairs, stone resetting, resizing rings as well as offering a remodeling service! You can remodel anything from bangles to pendants and rings. We also have a very reliable watchmaker able to meet all your horological needs. We even have a pearl re-stringer, so whatever your accessory repairs are we can pretty much do it all! 18

Our fashion selection includes boots and shoes from Heavenly Feet, Marco Tozzi, Gamis and HB shoes. We also stock stunning leather handbags and accessories as well as clothing from Casamia, Marble, Capri to name but a few! We recommend anyone looking to check out our stock to pop to our website felicitybridgend.co.uk

As well as all the years of retail expertise and being a consistent pinpoint in Bridgend, you are passionate about the future of the town. What would you like to see Bridgend become and what things are you doing to help it on its way? I can see Bridgend growing into a great spot to pop to for the everyday things we need in life. We have some new quirky independent retailers opening twinned with some great places to eat and drink.

As traders, we have formed a Bid company (business improvement district) these began in America and can be found nationwide working to make the town a better place. I am also a Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Mid Glamorgan and am very proud to attend ceremonies in the borough, welcoming new British Citizens.

“ We sell stunning new and pre-owned jewellery. Having been chief commissioner for girl guiding Cymru and continuing to be a leader in Bridgend, I am very keen that the town is a safe and welcoming place for all young people. This town has given me and my family a great life, I know it has a future. If I can be successful after 36 years, so can anyone!

Separating from your partner is daunting at any age, but arguably worse if you have been with your other half for a long time. Vale Life chats to the team at Bridgend Family Law firm, Melanie Lazarus & Co to find out more.

Madeline & Melanie Image taken at Cae Court

DIVORCE FOR THE OVER 50’S

There is a common trend for people to separate when the children have flown the nest and they find that they have little in common with each other when the distractions of family life have disappeared. While the procedure for divorce is the same irrespective of the length of the marriage, the settlement of financial matters will differ if there has been a long union. If one spouse has given up work to look after the children, it may be a case that the non-working spouse should apply for maintenance. Maintenance orders normally last for a fixed term, allowing the non-working party time to retrain or to find work, or until that person attains pensionable age. At this point, the maintenance will cease and the alternate source of income will take its place.

Pension assets are more relevant to older divorcing couples. The courts will deal with pensions in three ways. A pension sharing order happens when a sum from one party’s pension fund is paid into the other party’s fund. Pension attachment orders occur where the party holding the pension directs the pension company to pay a sum to the other party each month. Alternatively, if there are enough assets, the court will offset the value of the pension against other assets, the equity in the home for example. If you find yourself in this position there are some things that you can do to protect yourself. If your home is owned in your spouse’s sole name, you must register a notice at the Land Registry to protect your interest. If the home is in your joint names you should sever the tenancy and make a Will, thereby ring 22

fencing your half share of the home until the final financial settlement is made. You should close or transfer into your sole name any joint bank accounts also. Taking positive steps at the outset will allow for a better outcome.

“Trust the experts. Call Melanie Lazarus today for an informal, confidential discussion on where you stand.” Melanie Lazarus & Co 38 - 40 Nolton Street Bridgend CF31 3BN 01656 750888 www.mlsolicitors.com

A few of the manufacturing processes at the Valley Mill factory

VALLEY

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

Their journey began with director and creator Kevin Thomas in 2007, after purchasing a laser engraving machine and utilising two bedrooms at home as a workshop. The one-man band started attending markets and shows on the weekend; selling handmade laser engraved Welsh slate products, whilst still working as a full time manufacturing engineer. After committing to the business full time in 2009 the next step was to build two sheds in his garden to house the business.

In 2012, due to a surge in business brought on by supplying retail stores throughout the UK, Valley Mill moved into a commercial property in Crynant. This gave them the room and opportunity to expand their manufacturing processes, resulting in the creation of their range of Soy wax candles & handmade natural soaps.

www.valleymill.co.uk sales@valleymill.co.uk Facebook @ValleyMillhomeware 26

Due to the success of supplying other stores, the natural progression was for them to open their own high street store in Neath. Two years later the momentum continued, and with the help of local investment funding, were able to purchase better machinery and take over the unit next door in Crynant. This has expanded their workshop to an impressive 300 square metres in total, which houses 3 high powered laser engraving machines, a 7Kw sandblast engraver and a 2 meter bridge cutter. In 2016 they made the brave decision to move their high street store from Neath, to a much larger store in the heart of Swansea. Valley Mill now hand make a wide range of Welsh slate products; from coasters and placemats, to clocks and memo boards - all of which can be personalised in-store whilst you wait. With the help of one of their friendly sales assistants, you can also design your own house signs, memorials, trophies and awards; all of which are handcrafted to order in the Crynant workshop.

As well as their Swansea store and online, you can find Valley Mill’s products in over 140 stores throughout the UK.

Alongside their large range of Welsh slate home and giftware, you can find a variety of products from other likeminded Welsh companies; such as Melin Tregwynt, Tweedmill, Welsh Lavender and many more. All of these products, which are also handmade in Wales, include Welsh woollen blankets, scarves & cushions, handmade ceramics, natural beauty products, jewellery and much more. All products are hand picked to compliment Valley Mill’s own ranges. Valley Mill is proud to support other independent Welsh businesses, and stock some of the best products that Wales has to offer. Having supplied products to some of the most demanding and influential people in the world, such as Barack Obama, David Cameron and even the Queen, Valley Mill has the confidence and drive to keep putting Wales on the map.

“I believe in these uncertain times it is important to support Welsh companies, which is why the whole ethos of Valley Mill is to only sell products that are actually made in Wales.” Check out everything Valley Mill have to offer by visiting the website or for a more immersive experience pop to the store…

Lovely owner and a lovely cuppa xx” Angela “Microblading was amazing. I’m so pleased with the results. I would definitely go back and I definitely recommend” Jade

Kirsten has been in the beauty business for over 10 years and prides herself on perfection. She is constantly developing her skills as a beautician and endeavors to provide the latest and most effective treatments on the market. Kirsten’s applied ethics are that growing your confidence and making you feel wonderful this is a fundamental part of her work. As a result of this she has built a thriving business with hundreds of clients who would be simply lost without her. With a long list of treatments likerelaxing massages, semi-permanent lashes, Gel nails, eyebrow shaping, spray tanning, fat freezing and eyelash lifting. You can even experience the benefits of microdermabrasion. A chemical free, non-invasive treatment proven to lessen the appearance of fine lines, age spots and promote the skin’s production of collagen and elastin to reveal a younger, firmer and visibly clearer complexion.

The ‘piece de resistance’ has to be Kirsten’s ability to transform nonexistent, wayward or over-plucked eyebrows into magnificent, perfectly natural looking brows using her brilliantly refined skills in microblading. These ‘embroidered’ eyebrows last for up to a year and a half, amazingly they are on offer at Ultimate Beauty for £180. Kirsten has this technique down to a fine art, which is why this investment is the talk of the town. You don’t need to waste time and money on penciling and powdering to fill in gaps or define. These brows are confidence booster and Kirsten’s client reviews speak for themselves…

“Love my eyebrows. Microblading is the way forward. Thanks xxx” Tanya “I go to Ultimate Beauty Room for all of my treatments and would not go anywhere else. ProTone Body Studio offers the full works, from toning tables to holistic treatments. The studio even has its own Natural Sanctuary Beauty Salon! There’s even something for the men, with slick traditional shaving products. We spoke to owner Dawn Moore.

PROTONE

What was your reason behind opening the studio? The initial reason behind opening ProTone was to create a working environment for my daughter who has autism. Charlotte makes refreshments for clients, and cleans down our toning beds. She is able to work in a calming and non-stressful work place. I have worked with children for years, with various disabilities or with parents who struggle with daily living situations. What has the journey been like since you opened up? At the beginning my husband and I were unsure if we were ready to take on the challenge of a career change. It was a struggle at the start, working long hours, not having many clients. We started off with 3 or 4 clients a week, now we are pre-booked throughout the week.

What sort of treatments do you offer and what are they recommended for? Our toning beds are fantastic for helping relieve symptoms of Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetic Neuropathy, Parkinson’s and stroke recovery. Our beds are excellent for toning up. They are very beneficial to clients that have poor blood circulation and poor coordination. The beds are suitable for anyone between the age of 14 to 85 plus. A session on our bed is the equivalent of an hour in the gym. We also have a beautiful treatment room where our Holistic Therapist offers amazing treatments such as Reiki, Reflexology, pregnancy treatments, Massages. We even have a Beautician, Abbie who is our youngest daughter, who offers facials, eyelash treatments, waxing, make up and nail treatments. 42

Tell us about your Men’s shaving products? Are they easy to use? Our traditional shaving range includesdouble-edged razors, cut throat, shaving brushes and balms. We offer high end makes such as Hawkins and Brimble, Taylor of old Bond Street, Mekur and MÜHLE.

When a 39 year old Penarth resident needed treatment on the broken veins on her cheeks, she looked online to find a clinic locally to have them treated. She was impressed with Beauty Within Medispa’s website and the owners’ credentials and made an appointment.

BEAUTY WITHIN MEDI SPA

What treatment did you have? I had laser treatment on broken veins on my cheeks which was causing redness. How many treatments did you need? I only had one treatment which improved my problem dramatically. Who carried out the treatment? I had the treatment with co-owner Neil Moaksom. Was the treatment painful? The treatment was uncomfortable and caused slight redness and swelling on the area but this had cleared after a couple of days. Were you happy with the end result? I was really pleased to see it had dramatically improved the redness on my cheeks within one session.

My complexion is so much clearer and the texture of my skin is smoother. Have you had any other treatments/ therapies there in the past? I have received laser treatment on thread veins on my legs with pleasing results too. What difference has this made to you? I don’t feel self-conscious about my skin now. I can wear a lighter foundation as I don’t need to try and cover the redness. I had the treatment a few weeks before my wedding and I felt more confident on the day. Would you be happy to recommend Neil and Beauty Within to others? Definitely!

Davies and Jones Optometrist have an enviable reputation for providing the best possible customer service. To prove this, two of its staff members are competing for the privilege of winning a much coveted AOP (Association of Optometrists) Award. Cath Coles and Lee Berbillion have each been nominated for Dispensing Optician of the Year. We looked in on them to find out how they feel about their nominations.

HEAD TO HEAD

Lee Berbillion and Cath Coles

The AOP Awards recognises and celebrates outstanding talent and contributions in the optical sector. A shortlist of finalists in each category of the competition is selected by a panel of expert judges, who represent all areas of optics. Finalists are then profiled on the AOP website when voting opens in September. AOP Awards winners will be revealed at a prestigious ceremony; a black-tie gala dinner, taking place on Sunday, 28 January 2018. Cath and Lee both undertook the same academic qualifications but Cath has always been in practice (front of house) whereas Lee spent more time in the lab and was much less customer facing.

Cath I started in Davies and Jones as a part-time optical assistant. I really enjoyed dealing with the public, and I was interested in the dispensing. I was then given the opportunity to take Optical Assistant courses with the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. When I had completed those courses I was asked if I would like to go on to do the DO course to be a dispensing optician. I did my degree while working full time in practice and with two small children at home - it was exhausting but worth it! I then worked around three of our practices; got involved in frame buying, and then was lucky enough to be offered the position of Manager of Talbot Green branch. 48

Also, I did one year working for a pilot scheme, delivering eye service to a special school in Aberdare (released from work one day a week), which was a real honour. Lee I started off as a lab technician, after leaving school finishing my GCSEs. I worked in the lab for six years and progressed through the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers - doing courses from Level 2 to 4 NVQs and qualified as an SMC Technician. I worked alongside Geoffrey Lewis, who set up the lab 25 years ago and Bradley Watts, the lab manager now. I learnt a lot about spectacle glazing.

“ The AOP Awards recognises and celebrates outstanding talent.

Then, being very ambitious, I wanted to go onto a dispensing course. Under the guidance of Cath and Owain, I have progressed over the last three years to become a FBDO BSc Hons dispensing optician. Finally, I started a contact lens course this year. You can do your part‌ As you can see, both Cath and Lee deserve to win but which one will pick up the coveted award? You could help by casting your vote either on the AOP website www.aop.org.uk/awardsvote or by calling into the practice and making your choice known.

Davies & Jones Optometrists 58 Talbot Road Llantrisant, Pontyclun CF72 8AF 01443 223124

Cath and Lee may be going head to head at the awards but they do see eye to eye on one thing - great customer service. Good luck both and may the best man, or woman, win!

June Salter from Penarth has been going to Curves, the ladies only gym in Penarth for 10 years. Since the gym was taken over by Rachael Devine and James Beasley, June has enjoyed even greater results.

CURVES

June Salter

Ruth Richardson, Lucy Davies, Rachael Devine and James Beasley

Rachael and James have invested £13k in new equipment, new showers and a changing room and have introduced Body Balance, Zumba, Boxercise and a Running Club, which June and the 170 members can now enjoy. June shares with us her fitness journey with Curves. How did you hear about Curves? About 10 years ago, I had a leaflet through the door advertising Curves. Why did you feel the need to join? I wasn’t overweight as such but as I had an office job, I was sitting all of the time so I felt unfit and needed to tone up. Did you go there on your own? No, I did go with a friend initially for a bit of morale support. Did you notice any difference in your body after a while? Yes, I did. I also enjoyed the fact that it was women only.

Not that I felt that men would be staring at me necessarily but it’s nice to know that you can go to a gym without putting make-up on and be surrounded by muscle-bound men, flexing their muscles and showing off. They have their own gyms for that! How have you found Curves since Rachael and James have taken over? The machines are much better than they were before. They weren’t really doing their job efficiently any more. How do you find Rachael, James and the team at the gym? They are fantastic. They give you so much time and explain things really well. I go three times a week for an hour at a time. The circuit is 30 minutes or you can attent a class which is included in the membership. Rachael is amazing as is James, Lucy and Ruth.

“ I’ve dropped a couple of dress sizes.” 51

What difference have you seen in your body and level of fitness? I have lost sixteen and a half inches overall. I’ve dropped a couple of dress sizes and lost a stone. I’m delighted! Would you recommend Curves to your friends? My neighbour has now joined because she said she wanted to get results like me! I always say that it’s very friendly there and you can make a lot of new friends. They work you hard while you are on the machines but you can have a chat on the recovery boards. What’s more important is that you get results. I’m thrilled!

As I am approaching the end of another incredible wedding season, I have selected a few favourites to share. I particularly love these images as they sum up what my photography is about, love, connection, emotion and fun. This October, I celebrate five years in business, this I cannot believe.

It’s been a wonderful journey so far and I’m extremely excited about what the future has in store. I am so grateful to every bride and groom that has trusted me to capture their special day. Each new enquiry and booking is an honour. I’m not quite finished with 2017 weddings as I still have another eight to photograph before the end of the year! I’m also looking forward to booking Autumn family portraits as it’s such a beautiful time to photograph. Tommy’s fabulous starter came joint first in the Finals of this year’s Great British Menu scoring 10’s all around. You can sample this dish at Restaurant Tommy Heaney at The Great House Hotel as it is currently on the menu and now we’re giving you the chance to recreate it yourself.

RESTAURANT TOMMY HEANEY AT THE GREAT HOUSE HOTEL It’s been lovely to hear people’s comments about our Great British Menu experience and also to hear their feedback about the dish when they’ve tried it for themselves in the restaurant. We are getting an increasing number of customers asking a lot more about ingredients and techniques and I think that people are a lot more interested in what goes into a dish and how it is made than they were in the past. Programmes like the Great British Menu really help to get people more interested in food and for me this can only be a positive thing. I also believe that it’s encouraging people to be more adventurous with what they make themselves at home and try different cooking methods as well and challenge themselves to learn more. My philosophy has always been to use great local produce and let the produce do the talking and it’s great that people are so interested in how we create dishes.

Rufus Beets the Pigeons Away INGREDIENTS

Baby Beetroot 2kg Medium Beetroot 3 Bunches of Baby Beetroot (Yellow, Candied & White) 100ml Rapeseed Oil Sprig of Thyme Salt Smoked Beetroot Applewood Smoking Chips Pickling Liquid 1ltr Water 350ml White Wine Vinegar 90g Sugar 30g Salt 1 Bay Leaf 3 Sprigs Thyme Beetroot Emulsion 800g Beetroot Juice 160g Cabernet Vinegar 4 Egg Yolks 400ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil Pigeon 2 Pigeon Crowns 2 Sprigs Thyme 100ml Rapeseed Oil Salt & Pepper Seeds 50g Sunflower Seeds Pickled Berries Punnet Raspberries Punnet Blackberries Blueberries Pickled Shallots 2 Banana Shallots Dressing 1 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar 1 tbsp Chardonnay Vinegar 1 ½ tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 ½ tbsp. Hazelnut Oil Garnish Micro Mizuna Nasturtium Leaf Nasturtium Flowers Red Currants

METHOD

1. Remove the breasts from the bird. Remove the skin, season with salt, pepper, thyme and oil… seal the bag. 2. Beetroot emulsion; juice the medium sized beetroot (holding back 2 beetroots for the smoked beetroot). Weigh out 400g and reduce to 100g, add the remaining ingredients, reduce to 60g and cool. Add the egg yolks to a blender with the beetroot reduction slowly add the oil and season to taste. 3. Season the remaining beetroot (holding back one of each baby beets for pickling), vacuum seal individual colours in separate bags and steam at 90˚C for 30-35 minutes (90 minutes for the medium sized). Once cool enough to handle… peel. Alternatively, you can wrap the beetroot in tin foil, bake at 160c for 45 minutes until tender. 4. For the smoked beetroot. Place the cooked medium sized beets on a wire rack. Layer a baking tin with foil and ass smoking chips, place the wire rack over the chips and cover the whole tray with foil; place on direct heat for 5-8 minutes depending on the size of beetroots.

8. For the seeds, place a pan n heat and ass the seeds, tossing until just coloured. 9. To make the dressing, emulsify vinegars and slowly add the oils, season to taste. 10. To serve; cook the pigeon breast at 58˚C for 15 minutes and slice in two. Alternatively, sear in a heavy based frying pan until golden brown then transfer to a small roasting dish and roast at 100c for 6 minutes and leave rest for 10 minutes. 11. Place on plate with warm beetroot, berries, emulsion, seeds and pickled beetroot. Garnish with nasturtium leaves, flowers and lightly dress with vinaigrette. Tommy hopes that you enjoy this recipe and that you’ll give it a try at home. If you would rather enjoy the dish cooked by the great man himself, minus the hassle and the washing up, then we suggest you give Restaurant Tommy Heaney at The Great House a call and reserve your table.

5. For pickling liquid; place all ingredients in a pan and heat to dissolve the salt and sugar. 6. For the pickled beetroots and shallots, peel and slice the remaining beetroot and slice the shallots into rings. Heat pickling liquid and pour over beetroot; once the vegetables have softened slightly, remove and layer on a tray. 7. Pickled berries; place the blackberries and blueberries in separate vacuum pouches and ladle 30ml of cold pickling liquid into each and seal on full pressure. Place the raspberries in a small take away container with 30ml of pickling liquid and compress. 63

A trip to Cowbridge has never been more enjoyable, thanks to the new addition of Fablas Parlours. Owner Michelle Evans, with the help on mum Lauren, are on to a winner with this fabulous new venture. Vale Life caught up with Michelle over a cheeky glass of wine to find out more.

Lauren & Michelle

FABLAS ICE CREAM

When did you open Fablas Michelle? We’ve been open now for six months and can’t believe how well thing are going. We couldn’t have asked for a better response. What’s on offer at Fablas? We’re much more than a coffee shop. We offer an arrange of hand-made, mouth watering Artisan Ice Creams, sundaes, sorbets (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), really good coffee, cocktails, wines, bottled beers and a selection of cheeses that you wouldn’t find in the supermarkets. Where do your customers come from? We’re getting a good following from the people of Cowbridge but we see new faces every day. What do you think is special about Fablas? We pride ourselves that our ice cream is made locally by ourselves, using locally sourced milk and cream. We’re firm believers of selling locally sourced produce. Our customers love the fact that we are an independent business and that we are a mother and daughter team.

I couldn’t have done all of this by myself. Mum and I love working together. Our staff are local and we are a friendly team. Customers often comment that there’s a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which is something we really wanted to achieve. What’s popular on the menu? Who doesn’t love Prosecco? Our Prosecco ice cream is a big hit as are our Smirnoff Ice and Desperados Sorbets. I know there seems to be an alcoholic thread here! Our ice creams are hugely popular and, given that we have 29 flavours, there’s enough to choose from! We hear you also do parties? Yes, we recently introduced our Kids Party Package which are proving really popular. From £12.50 per head, kids can enjoy a mocktail on arrival, followed by afternoon tea and finish with a giant sharing ice cream sundae. We also do grown-up parties too! (18 and over). Please ring for more information.

“Our ice cream is made locally by ourselves.” 64

TESTIMONIALS

What customers say... Visited Fablas Ice Cream Parlour earlier. Can totally recommend the peanut butter, salted caramel, chocolate and hazelnut, mango, strawberry, blood orange, lemon drizzle, and lemon and ginger sorbet... that’s the benefit of going with friends! Congratulations Michelle and Lauren on your amazing new venture. We will be back! Sue Watts Nicest ice cream ever. Also had raspberry ice tea which was even better than a cocktail (if possible). Will be back soon to try some peanut butter flavour. Jo and Dave Dando of Llangeinor in the Garw Valley, are frequent sojourners to Cowbridge. We asked Jo what made them pop into Happy Days Vintage Homestore and why they now keep coming back.

HAPPY DAYS

How did you hear about Happy Days? On one of our many trips to Cowbridge, we noticed the quirky bicycle advertising Happy Days. We ventured down there and the rest, as they say, is history! How long have you been shopping there? We have been regular visitors for at least three years. What have you bought from Happy Days? We have bought various items of furniture, including a Welsh dresser, an antique wall dresser, a variety of old chairs and rustic settles, lamps and antique crockery. We also had our Chesterfield suite refurbished.

Dave & Jo Dando

What do you think makes Happy Days special? Whenever we go into Happy Days, we always end up pointing to or picking up an item and saying words to the effect, “I haven’t seen one of these in years!” or “that would look nice in our setting...” You are encouraged to browse in a relaxed welcoming environment, where a whole spectrum of individual, antique, homely items are waiting to be discovered. Happy Days is not one of those places where you only go to look for fear of over-inflated prices but everything has the true ring of value to it. To complement the experience, you can always treat yourself to home-made cakes and coffee! 66

Alex Richards and Andrew Farmer

AAI (Architectural Aluminium Installations) of Swansea were delighted to join forces with Morganstone on a large care home in Beddau which was officially opened in September this year. We caught up with Ralph Hughes, Operations Manager of Morganstone, to find out why he chose to work with AAI.

AAI - H ANDLED WITH CARE

What does Morganstone offer its clients? We offer a full construction service from land purchase through to completion of the build, and aftercare. How did you hear about AAI? They are known to us through personally knowing each other from previous companies. What work did they carry out for you? The carried out the manufacture and installation of the curtain walling, entrance doors and AOV installation. Who did you liaise with? I liaised with the owner of the business, Mr Alex Richards and the Managing Director, Mr Andrew Farmer.

How did you find him to work with? I found them both very knowledgeable and proactive. Did they give you ideas or did you give him a clear brief? Yes, they discussed issued that they had resolved on similar projects and incorporated this into the element of works. What difference has the work done made to the way in which the building now appears or functions? It gives a large amount of natural light to the internal corridors and also security to the entrance doors.

Would you recommend AAI? I would be delighted to work with AAI again and to recommend them to others. They are on our approved list of sub-contractors who have all had to attain certain standards and criteria for safety, quality and financial status etc. “It’s always a pleasure to build good relationships with other contractors and Morganstone are no exception. A great company and between us we believe we managed to create an impressive building to the area.” said Alex Richards, AAI.

“ I found them both very knowledgeable and proactive.” 72

When has it ever paid to drag your heels? Making Tax Digital (MTD) has been pushed back to 2020. Great news? Don’t have to make the changes? Sadly that’s wrong. When MTD eventually starts, the digital heel draggers, will find their tech savvy competitors sailing to success, with the last boat long gone. Waiting for MTD before adopting cloud technology is crazy. Digitalisation is increasing the speed and ease of doing business right now.

LEWIS BALLARD We’re keeping ahead of the tide so we’re not only ready to deal with the inevitable hiccups of MTD, we’re also ensuring our clients stay ahead of competitors today.

‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ We’ve made that investment with Xero Cloud Accounting. As avid Xero pioneers, we’re actively working with them to improve the resource, whilst also championing the voices of our clients when it comes to feedback and progress. Xero is continually adding new and more streamlined features and aim to make using their software so simple that it would be reckless not to.

“ Accounting’s cutting edge.”

Where is the silver lining? Cloud accounting is up to date information on a constantly updating platform. It keeps you in touch with the figures of your business as they change. Taxation experts suggest that there’ll be an organic move to cloud accounting.

We’re doing it now. Everyone will have to do it eventually. This is accounting’s cutting edge. And it’s right where future businesses success stories will be. Genghis Khan’s empire grew on his willingness to embrace new technology; the bow and arrow. No-one is suggesting that you start conquering your business competitors with primitive weapons, but why use outdated systems? 82

Proactive change helped Genghis create a vast empire; vanquishing enemies, not just because he was ready to change, but because he had changed and prepared in advance. To be prepared is half the victory. At Lewis Ballard we’ve making far more strides than just getting ahead of MTD. We’re also launching our Lewis Ballard App. It’s packed with useful tools, to track mileage, upload your receipts oand calculate tax. It will give you fingertip access to Xero, Receipt Bank and many more programs to help streamline your business, with direct access to our portal to sign off documents on the go.

“ We’re also launching our Lewis Ballard App. It’s packed with useful tools.”

Neil and Janet Ballard

In addition, our bespoke program 4Sight gives us the ability to regularly predict your business future letting you pounce on opportunities, and dodge problems before they surface. 4Sight will raise your business planning capabilities beyond the monthly board meeting to the continuous nurture of your assets. Convenience is key. The eternal struggle for busy business owners is time management. How can I keep on top of bookkeeping? keep track of cashflow? Or predict what’s coming? Xero, the LB App and 4Sight are big steps towards really catching business up with the on-the-go lives that we lead. Cloud accounting is secure and it saves time. Apps are an integral part of the way we do business. So why wait to change?

To make it even easier for clients to navigate these systems, we’re integrating them with our brand new website, so that everything related to our service is connected to one, all encompassing, business hub. You don’t need as much 4Sight as Ghengis to see this is the way you need to go!

Househunters in south Wales can be assured of the very best quality from David Wilson Homes which has been named as a five-star housebuilder for the eighth consecutive year.

FIVE STAR QUALITY FROM DAVID WILSON HOMES

The company is currently creating new communities at St James’ Gardens in Wick and The Rise@ Ocean View in Ogmore by Sea where a range of three, four and five bedroom homes are available for those looking to settle in the Vale of Glamorgan. Sales director Richard Lawson said he was thrilled with the latest award from the Home Builders Federation (HBF) which rates customer satisfaction in a national survey. For David Wilson Homes to be rated as 5 star means that more than 90% of its customers say they would recommend the homes to a friend. It also means that David Wilson Homes now becomes the only major national housebuilder to be accredited as a 5 star builder for eight years in a row. Richard, said: “We are extremely proud to achieve the 5 star rating for eight years in a row as it means more than 90% of our customers would recommend our homes to a friend. The customer recommendation scores come from building high quality homes and then really looking after our customers once they have moved in.

“Quality is so important to us. There are more than 400 items that are individually checked before the keys to a Barratt home are handed over to a customer. We try to work harder than anyone else when it comes to looking after our customers, and this comes out in the survey’s results.” David Wilson Homes South Wales continually puts customers at the heart of everything it does by building high quality homes with great design that create strong communities. This, together with a focus on looking after customers after they have moved in, has helped achieve the high customer recommendation scores for David Wilson Homes South Wales. The HBF survey is one of the largest customer surveys of its type, with more than 50,000 customers taking part. 84

It was developed to give customers an independent quality rating of the new homes being built across the country, with the star rating a handy guide for customers to quickly see which housebuilders have the highest recommendation scores.

“High quality homes with great design.” Stewart Baseley, executive chairman of the Home Builders Federation, said: “The Customer Satisfaction and Star Rating Scheme is an accepted, robust and independently assessed measure of customer service. Achieving the highest levels of satisfaction is a huge challenge that requires commitment from everyone in an organisation from top to bottom. To do so while increasing output, as Barratt has done, to help address our acute housing shortage is especially commendable.”

For Carol and Phil Kibble, moving into a new home at David Wilson Homes sought-after St James’ Gardens development in Wick has been a welcome return to Wales after 30 years.

HOMECOMING

The couple were keen to return to the area with son Pete (18) after spending three decades in Wiltshire. And the chance to move close to family was too tempting to resist. “We love the location here. Wick is within walking distance of the coast and has wonderful amenities. Not many villages can boast two pubs, a shop, a post office, a village school and a very active community,” said Carol. We were also attracted to the quality of homes at St James’ Gardens - and the layout of our house perfectly suits our needs.” Successful cycling and triathlon coach Phil added: “When we were looking for our house it had to be suitable for Carol’s occupation as a full-time artist. It was essential to have one room which had great light and sufficient space to become Carol’s art studio. We chose the Irving house design. It’s a four-bedroom detached property with a single garage.

“We particularly love the open plan kitchen/family area and the quality of the appliances. Upstairs, the bedrooms are light and spacious and one of the west-facing bedrooms has made a perfect studio. “Another benefit of the house is the warmth. We previously lived in a draughty 1850s cottage. In comparison, this house feels tropical!” The area is just what the family was looking for - equidistant between Cowbridge and Bridgend. The former is a pretty market town and Bridgend features all local amenities and plenty of retail opportunities.

“Wick is within walking distance of the coast and has wonderful amenities.” 85
