Well, this year has certainly been one of change for us! We’ve had a name makeover to Good Life Industries, taken on more staff (and lost a couple), started a new title - Gower Life and moving production into new offices in Cowbridge. All exciting stuff! While working from home has its advantages - like being able to work in your onesie (I’m not ashamed to admit it!), and not having to apply the warpaint every day (still holding my hand up!), the downsides are that there’s always washing to put in the machine, always a floor to be mopped and always a pot of stew on the go to feed the hungry workers (not that I mind but I am busy you know guys!). As I write this, we’re not in the offices yet but we can’t wait. It’s nothing flash. Just two rooms for now for production but it’s a big leap for us and Cowbridge isn’t too shabby a place to work from is it? We have welcomed our new sales person, Nigel into the fold. He will be working with us on Vale Life (and bits of City Life). He is fitting in really nicely and I’m sure he will bring lots of experience and new ideas to the mix. Penarth Fashion Week is shaping up really nicely. We’re so thrilled to have been chosen as the sole media sponsor for this event, which I’m sure will be a huge success and one which will grow year on year and will bring additional focus on the vibrant town of Penarth.

Gemma Williams-Jones of View2Rent has recently celebrated ten years in business and enjoys an enviable reputation. We caught up with Gemma at the gorgeous new Harbour Bar and Restaurant to find out more. When was View2Rent established? I set up View2Rent in 2007 from our little spare bedroom in our first home and within 12 months I opened our first office on Lias Road. As much as I enjoyed our eight years there, I felt it was time to move on, so in May this year we opened our new office in Porthcawl’s main street. Since moving there, the feedback we’ve had has been fantastic, we absolutely love being in John Street. Why Porthcawl? I’ve lived in Porthcawl all my life and absolutely love it, My family have lived in Porthcawl since 1930 and been in business here since 1954.
My sister has her own boutique The Closet and my brother also has his own business David Evans Garden & Home Improvements, it’s a very proud feeling after all these years as a family we are still in business in our lovely town. Porthcawl has so much to offer with independent businesses, restaurants and bars and the beautiful beaches. No wonder people come for miles to visit. It’s such a lovely town to live in. Who is in the office with you? There are four of us at present. Myself, my husband Sam, Karen is our lettings negotiator and does a fantastic job, Ali has recently joined us and is doing so well at managing all the accounts. They are wonderful members of the team and I’d be lost without them. Plus, we are very fortunate to be able to work with other local professionals, from plumbers to electricians, carpenters and builders, and we count them all as very much part of the View2Rent team. 10

If you ask most parents why they chose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe that their child will a) receive a better standard of education, b) have better opportunities for future careers, c) be more disciplined and d) benefit from smaller pupil-teacher ratios.
ST. CLARE’S SCHOOL Vale Life chats to Simon Antwis, Headmaster at St. Clare’s School in Porthcawl, to find out more. Who does the school cater for? We are a non-selective independent school for boys and girls aged 3 up to 18. We have many students leave our Sixth Form at the end of Year 13 who have been with us since their Nursery days. St. Clare’s School has recently been able to celebrate its performance in the ALIS Value Added data report for 2017 A-Level exams.
What is ALIS? ALIS (Advanced Level Information System) Value-Added analysis tells us how likely students are to achieve particular subject grades as they set out on the journey to post-16 qualifications, and is based upon a child’s average GCSE score and a baseline test. This data allows us to predict what A-Level results each of our students are likely to achieve and, at St. Clare’s, to aim to better those outcomes. What does this actually mean for students? This analysis shows that due to factors such as smaller class sizes, more individual attention and exceptional teaching at St. Clare’s, a student typically expected to achieve BBB grades is actually more likely to achieve ABB with us. 12
This could make all the difference when it comes to UCAS applications and perhaps see students gaining that Russell Group place they wouldn’t otherwise get.

Harbour Bar & Kitchen opened its doors in July and for the first month launched their food offering with a soft opening menu which was very well received. They are now running a full, extensive menu to the delights of the people of Porthcawl and beyond. We chat to co-owner Kate Jackson to find out more.

Congratulations on the opening Kate. Are you the sole owner? No, HBK is owned and operated by myself and my partner Phil Booth - of Booth Group Leisure & Hospitality.
We have lunchtime weekly specials and a bar snacks menu too. Harbour Bar & Kitchen serves a modern roast lunch from 12pm - 4pm on Sundays.
What does HBK offer? The restaurant offers modern, casual dining with a menu ranging from Wagyu Burgers through to high end steaks and fish dishes. Our menus change seasonally, so there is always something new to look forward to and, because our food is cooked fresh to order, we can accommodate most dietary requests.
Does the restaurant welcome children? Absolutely! Children are most welcome. We are a family friendly restaurant and have highchairs, baby changing facilities and child menus during Monday to Friday and an additional Sunday menu for roast. What about dogs? Dogs are permitted on our outside heated patio area. We have parking for your four-legged friends (whilst you pop to the bar) and bowls of fresh water for passing thirsty hounds too! FELICITY BRIDGEND You’ve been open for over 30 years then, what’s the journey been like? When I was five, I asked my mum to buy me a shop, little did I ever dream that this would happen! Lo and behold we began as Felicity Shoes and Accessories in 1981. My family had been in business in Bridgend since 1917. The experience that I was conditioned in has been invaluable; customer service has always been forefront in our values, many of my customers have become friends. A few years on, I had the opportunity to expand into the jewellery market, this has been fascinating and I love selling great products to nice people. Our customers’ needs and desires have changed considerably over the last 36 years, but we enjoy sourcing new products and unusual gifts. Keeping our prices affordable and still with our trademark wow customer service.
Tell us about all the wonderful products you have on offer… We sell new and pre-owned jewellery, much of which has come from our customers part exchanges. DIVORCE FOR THE OVER 50’S
There is a common trend for people to separate when the children have flown the nest and they find that they have little in common with each other when the distractions of family life have disappeared. While the procedure for divorce is the same irrespective of the length of the marriage, the settlement of financial matters will differ if there has been a long union. If one spouse has given up work to look after the children, it may be a case that the non-working spouse should apply for maintenance. Maintenance orders normally last for a fixed term, allowing the non-working party time to retrain or to find work, or until that person attains pensionable age. At this point, the maintenance will cease and the alternate source of income will take its place.
Pension assets are more relevant to older divorcing couples. The courts will deal with pensions in three ways. A pension sharing order happens when a sum from one party’s pension fund is paid into the other party’s fund. Pension attachment orders occur where the party holding the pension directs the pension company to pay a sum to the other party each month. Alternatively, if there are enough assets, the court will offset the value of the pension against other assets, the equity in the home for example. If you find yourself in this position there are some things that you can do to protect yourself. If your home is owned in your spouse’s sole name, you must register a notice at the Land Registry to protect your interest. If the home is in your joint names you should sever the tenancy and make a Will, thereby ring 22
fencing your half share of the home until the final financial settlement is made. You should close or transfer into your sole name any joint bank accounts also. Taking positive steps at the outset will allow for a better outcome.

The business traded from Jacquie’s garage but after only one year, demand has been so great that she is now opening a boutique in Penarth. Blayze Fashion offers a full range of beautiful, affordable clothes for women of all ages. The majority of the stock will have a one size fitting which range from 8 to 16/20 and will include beautiful knitwear, Ficelle trousers (which have fantastic stretch!), stunning coats and a range of accessories. “The price points are amazing” says Jacquie.” I know what my clients want and do my best to find them exactly what they’re looking for.” Jacquie, whose father sadly passed away from Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia supports the Dementia and Alzheimer’s Society and recently held a fashion show in the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, Windsor Road, Penarth, raising £1,200 for the charity.
This year’s fashion show will be held on the 30th November at the same club and Jacquie is hoping to beat that figure. Their journey began with director and creator Kevin Thomas in 2007, after purchasing a laser engraving machine and utilising two bedrooms at home as a workshop. The one-man band started attending markets and shows on the weekend; selling handmade laser engraved Welsh slate products, whilst still working as a full time manufacturing engineer. After committing to the business full time in 2009 the next step was to build two sheds in his garden to house the business.

Two years later the momentum continued, and with the help of local investment funding, were able to purchase better machinery and take over the unit next door in Crynant. This has expanded their workshop to an impressive 300 square metres in total, which houses 3 high powered laser engraving machines, a 7Kw sandblast engraver and a 2 meter bridge cutter. In 2016 they made the brave decision to move their high street store from Neath, to a much larger store in the heart of Swansea. Valley Mill now hand make a wide range of Welsh slate products; from coasters and placemats, to clocks and memo boards - all of which can be personalised in-store whilst you wait. With the help of one of their friendly sales assistants, you can also design your own house signs, memorials, trophies and awards; all of which are handcrafted to order in the Crynant workshop.

What was your reason behind opening the studio? The initial reason behind opening ProTone was to create a working environment for my daughter who has autism. Charlotte makes refreshments for clients, and cleans down our toning beds. She is able to work in a calming and non-stressful work place. I have worked with children for years, with various disabilities or with parents who struggle with daily living situations. What has the journey been like since you opened up? At the beginning my husband and I were unsure if we were ready to take on the challenge of a career change. It was a struggle at the start, working long hours, not having many clients. We started off with 3 or 4 clients a week, now we are pre-booked throughout the week.
What sort of treatments do you offer and what are they recommended for? Our toning beds are fantastic for helping relieve symptoms of Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetic Neuropathy, Parkinson’s and stroke recovery. Our beds are excellent for toning up. They are very beneficial to clients that have poor blood circulation and poor coordination. The beds are suitable for anyone between the age of 14 to 85 plus. A session on our bed is the equivalent of an hour in the gym. We also have a beautiful treatment room where our Holistic Therapist offers amazing treatments such as Reiki, Reflexology, pregnancy treatments, Massages. We even have a Beautician, Abbie who is our youngest daughter, who offers facials, eyelash treatments, waxing, make up and nail treatments. 42

What treatment did you have? I had laser treatment on broken veins on my cheeks which was causing redness. How many treatments did you need? The treatment was uncomfortable and caused slight redness and swelling on the area but this had cleared after a couple of days. Were you happy with the end result? Davies and Jones Optometrist have an enviable reputation for providing the best possible customer service. To prove this, two of its staff members are competing for the privilege of winning a much coveted AOP (Association of Optometrists) Award. Cath Coles and Lee Berbillion have each been nominated for Dispensing Optician of the Year. We looked in on them to find out how they feel about their nominations.

The AOP Awards recognises and celebrates outstanding talent and contributions in the optical sector. A shortlist of finalists in each category of the competition is selected by a panel of expert judges, who represent all areas of optics. Finalists are then profiled on the AOP website when voting opens in September. AOP Awards winners will be revealed at a prestigious ceremony; a black-tie gala dinner, taking place on Sunday, 28 January 2018. Cath and Lee both undertook the same academic qualifications but Cath has always been in practice (front of house) whereas Lee spent more time in the lab and was much less customer facing.
Cath I started in Davies and Jones as a part-time optical assistant. I really enjoyed dealing with the public, and I was interested in the dispensing. I was then given the opportunity to take Optical Assistant courses with the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. When I had completed those courses I was asked if I would like to go on to do the DO course to be a dispensing optician. I did my degree while working full time in practice and with two small children at home - it was exhausting but worth it! I then worked around three of our practices; got involved in frame buying, and then was lucky enough to be offered the position of Manager of Talbot Green branch. 48
Also, I did one year working for a pilot scheme, delivering eye service to a special school in Aberdare (released from work one day a week), which was a real honour. Lee I started off as a lab technician, after leaving school finishing my GCSEs. I worked in the lab for six years and progressed through the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers - doing courses from Level 2 to 4 NVQs and qualified as an SMC Technician. I worked alongside Geoffrey Lewis, who set up the lab 25 years ago and Bradley Watts, the lab manager now. I learnt a lot about spectacle glazing.

Then, being very ambitious, I wanted to go onto a dispensing course. Under the guidance of Cath and Owain, I have progressed over the last three years to become a FBDO BSc Hons dispensing optician. Rachael and James have invested £13k in new equipment, new showers and a changing room and have introduced Body Balance, Zumba, Boxercise and a Running Club, which June and the 170 members can now enjoy. June shares with us her fitness journey with Curves. How did you hear about Curves? About 10 years ago, I had a leaflet through the door advertising Curves. Why did you feel the need to join? I wasn’t overweight as such but as I had an office job, I was sitting all of the time so I felt unfit and needed to tone up. Did you go there on your own? No, I did go with a friend initially for a bit of morale support. Did you notice any difference in your body after a while? Yes, I did. I also enjoyed the fact that it was women only.
Not that I felt that men would be staring at me necessarily but it’s nice to know that you can go to a gym without putting make-up on and be surrounded by muscle-bound men, flexing their muscles and showing off. They have their own gyms for that! How have you found Curves since Rachael and James have taken over? The machines are much better than they were before. They weren’t really doing their job efficiently any more. How do you find Rachael, James and the team at the gym? They are fantastic. They give you so much time and explain things really well. I go three times a week for an hour at a time. The circuit is 30 minutes or you can attent a class which is included in the membership. Rachael is amazing as is James, Lucy and Ruth.

What difference have you seen in your body and level of fitness? I have lost sixteen and a half inches overall. I’ve dropped a couple of dress sizes and lost a stone. I’m delighted! Would you recommend Curves to your friends? My neighbour has now joined because she said she wanted to get results like me! I always say that it’s very friendly there and you can make a lot of new friends. They work you hard while you are on the machines but you can have a chat on the recovery boards. What’s more important is that you get results. I’m thrilled!

RESTAURANT TOMMY HEANEY AT THE GREAT HOUSE HOTEL It’s been lovely to hear people’s comments about our Great British Menu experience and also to hear their feedback about the dish when they’ve tried it for themselves in the restaurant. We are getting an increasing number of customers asking a lot more about ingredients and techniques and I think that people are a lot more interested in what goes into a dish and how it is made than they were in the past. Programmes like the Great British Menu really help to get people more interested in food and for me this can only be a positive thing. I also believe that it’s encouraging people to be more adventurous with what they make themselves at home and try different cooking methods as well and challenge themselves to learn more. My philosophy has always been to use great local produce and let the produce do the talking and it’s great that people are so interested in how we create dishes.

METHOD
1. Remove the breasts from the bird. Remove the skin, season with salt, pepper, thyme and oil… seal the bag. 2. Beetroot emulsion; juice the medium sized beetroot (holding back 2 beetroots for the smoked beetroot). Weigh out 400g and reduce to 100g, add the remaining ingredients, reduce to 60g and cool. Add the egg yolks to a blender with the beetroot reduction slowly add the oil and season to taste. 3. Season the remaining beetroot (holding back one of each baby beets for pickling), vacuum seal individual colours in separate bags and steam at 90˚C for 30-35 minutes (90 minutes for the medium sized). Once cool enough to handle… peel. Alternatively, you can wrap the beetroot in tin foil, bake at 160c for 45 minutes until tender. 4. For the smoked beetroot. Place the cooked medium sized beets on a wire rack. Layer a baking tin with foil and ass smoking chips, place the wire rack over the chips and cover the whole tray with foil; place on direct heat for 5-8 minutes depending on the size of beetroots.
8. For the seeds, place a pan n heat and ass the seeds, tossing until just coloured. 9. To make the dressing, emulsify vinegars and slowly add the oils, season to taste. 10. To serve; cook the pigeon breast at 58˚C for 15 minutes and slice in two. Alternatively, sear in a heavy based frying pan until golden brown then transfer to a small roasting dish and roast at 100c for 6 minutes and leave rest for 10 minutes. 11. Place on plate with warm beetroot, berries, emulsion, seeds and pickled beetroot. Garnish with nasturtium leaves, flowers and lightly dress with vinaigrette. Pickled berries; place the blackberries and blueberries in separate vacuum pouches and ladle 30ml of cold pickling liquid into each and seal on full pressure. Place the raspberries in a small take away container with 30ml of pickling liquid and compress. 63

When did you open Fablas Michelle? We’ve been open now for six months and can’t believe how well thing are going. We couldn’t have asked for a better response. What’s on offer at Fablas? We’re much more than a coffee shop. We offer an arrange of hand-made, mouth watering Artisan Ice Creams, sundaes, sorbets (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), really good coffee, cocktails, wines, bottled beers and a selection of cheeses that you wouldn’t find in the supermarkets. Where do your customers come from? We’re getting a good following from the people of Cowbridge but we see new faces every day. What do you think is special about Fablas? We pride ourselves that our ice cream is made locally by ourselves, using locally sourced milk and cream. We’re firm believers of selling locally sourced produce. Our customers love the fact that we are an independent business and that we are a mother and daughter team.
I couldn’t have done all of this by myself. Mum and I love working together. Our staff are local and we are a friendly team. Customers often comment that there’s a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which is something we really wanted to achieve. What’s popular on the menu? Who doesn’t love Prosecco? Our Prosecco ice cream is a big hit as are our Smirnoff Ice and Desperados Sorbets. I know there seems to be an alcoholic thread here! Our ice creams are hugely popular and, given that we have 29 flavours, there’s enough to choose from! We hear you also do parties? Yes, we recently introduced our Kids Party Package which are proving really popular. From £12.50 per head, kids can enjoy a mocktail on arrival, followed by afternoon tea and finish with a giant sharing ice cream sundae. We also do grown-up parties too! (18 and over). How did you hear about Happy Days? On one of our many trips to Cowbridge, we noticed the quirky bicycle advertising Happy Days. We ventured down there and the rest, as they say, is history! How long have you been shopping there? We have been regular visitors for at least three years. What have you bought from Happy Days? We have bought various items of furniture, including a Welsh dresser, an antique wall dresser, a variety of old chairs and rustic settles, lamps and antique crockery. AAI (Architectural Aluminium Installations) of Swansea were delighted to join forces with Morganstone on a large care home in Beddau which was officially opened in September this year. We caught up with Ralph Hughes, Operations Manager of Morganstone, to find out why he chose to work with AAI.

What does Morganstone offer its clients? We offer a full construction service from land purchase through to completion of the build, and aftercare. How did you hear about AAI? They are known to us through personally knowing each other from previous companies. What work did they carry out for you? The carried out the manufacture and installation of the curtain walling, entrance doors and AOV installation. Who did you liaise with? I liaised with the owner of the business, Mr Alex Richards and the Managing Director, Mr Andrew Farmer.
How did you find him to work with? I found them both very knowledgeable and proactive. Did they give you ideas or did you give him a clear brief? Yes, they discussed issued that they had resolved on similar projects and incorporated this into the element of works. What difference has the work done made to the way in which the building now appears or functions? It gives a large amount of natural light to the internal corridors and also security to the entrance doors.
Would you recommend AAI? I would be delighted to work with AAI again and to recommend them to others. They are on our approved list of sub-contractors who have all had to attain certain standards and criteria for safety, quality and financial status etc. “It’s always a pleasure to build good relationships with other contractors and Morganstone are no exception. “We particularly love the open plan kitchen/family area and the quality of the appliances. Upstairs, the bedrooms are light and spacious and one of the west-facing bedrooms has made a perfect studio. “Another benefit of the house is the warmth. We previously lived in a draughty 1850s cottage. In comparison, this house feels tropical!” The area is just what the family was looking for - equidistant between Cowbridge and Bridgend. The former is a pretty market town and Bridgend features all local amenities and plenty of retail opportunities.

The Women in Wales charity Lunch celebrated its 25th anniversary by presenting Save the Children with a cheque for £30,000. The sell-out lunch attracted its biggest ever audience of 500 guests, with Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal as the guest of honour and Floral goods entrepreneur, Cath Kidston as the Speaker. Headline sponsor Bluestone National Resort and the lunch’s other sponsors joined the Women in Wales committee at the SSE Swalec Stadium for the cheque handing-over ceremony, where Save the Children confirmed that the donation would go towards the Welsh project, Eat, Sleep Learn. Launch night of Penarth Fashion Week Local independent businesses including boutiques, tailors, hair designers, food establishments and make-up artists and members of the RNLI got together to launch Penarth Fashion Week which runs from 9th – 15th October, 2017. As you know, PFW was born to raise money for much needed support and fund raising for the local RNLI, a charity which saves lives every day. The evening culminated with the unveiling of the “RNLI Dress” worn by Gaby Harding and designed by Georgina-Grace Smith. The event was hosted by Etc. Penarth and later in the week again hosted another photoshoot to unveil the “RNLI Suit” designed by Nathan Palmer and modelled by Kieron Davies.
