Businesses start, grow and flourish because of three things; a great offering, fantastic service and, most importantly, passion. That certainly can be said for our cover stars Miss DeVyliers and Wish Aesthetics of Pontyclun. Read all about them on pages xx and xx. They are just two independent businesses who are bucking the buying online trend. We were delighted to bring our Fashion & Food Festival knowledge and expertise to Porthcawl for the second year running. Pages xxx – xxx are crammed with images of the event and the businesses who so graciously gave of their time for such a worthy cause. We have and will always be supportive of the brave men and women who so selflessly risk their lives to save those in danger at sea. This issue also focuses on Barry’s much-loved High Street, Barry Island and Llantwit Major and their many independent businesses. There are also lots of restaurants for you to choose from; especially with Christmas just around the corner. Where will you choose to spend the festive season? Share your thoughts with readers on our social channels.

When Nicky Moss lost her best friend back in 2009, she saw firsthand how little help there is out there for people to pay everyday household bills. So, she created the Cost of Cancer charity on Facebook back in 2014 and got the charity registered with the Charity Commission in 2016.
COST OF CANCER
Here, Nicky tells us more about how the charity is run and how you can help.
What does Cost of Cancer offer? We provide financial help to those who are going through treatment for cancer; to pay bills like gas, electricity, rent, mortgage and fuel expenses to and from hospital. Who do you help? The charity helps the sufferer of cancer and/or their families. How is the money raised? We raise the money to help people by putting on annual events, or by people arranging events for us. Do you have any sponsors? Yes, our sponsors are Moss Technical Ltd and Autobahn Finance Ltd.
Are you looking for more sponsors? If so, how do they get in touch? We are always looking for more sponsors to help us with the costs for t-shirts or for advertising, so the money we raise goes straight to helping people. They can get in touch via the website.
How can people donate? They can donate by going to the website. We have a donate button there. Or they can buy our merchandise, again from our website.
COST OF CANCER
“I am happy to share how impressed we are with Cost of Cancer, from the first phone call we were treated with friendliness, respect and empathy.”
“Just like to thank you for your help and concern for Angela. You really have been great, keep at it. I was very grateful for your help and others in need should just ask if they need it. Nicky was a pleasure to deal with and quickly and efficiently dealt with my needs.”
What people say…
Nicky Moss Founder/Trustee Cost of Cancer
“Thank you, Cost of Cancer. You have helped my mam out with your generosity and taken a lot of worry off her with your help. You have been fantastic since I contacted you.”

Louise De-Vyliers, owner of Miss De-Vyliers, opened the popular boutique in Pontyclun in October 2018. It was the culmination of a life’s dream. Louise tells us more.
MISS DE-VYLIERS
What do you offer your customers? I aim to offer our customers stylish clothing that’s a little bit different offering great value for money. The range goes from casual to classy, day wear and evening wear. When I started, my aim was to help women more of a mature age and all sizes, who could have lost their way in fashion and give them some helpful, personal attention. But now I find my customers are any age from twenty upwards. Describe your customers? I have many faithful local customers but also customers coming from as far afield as Somerset. With an online presence which is being improved, customers are getting in touch from all over the UK. The shopping experience is friendly, personal and attentive with nothing being too much trouble.
I have wonderful staff including ladies with years of relevant retail experience plus highly talented graduates. Are you excited about your autumn/ winter collections? The autumn/winter range is always exciting and we take great care to advise our customers to wear colours that suit their skin tone. This season has many loose-fitting, comfy tops ready for the cold winter days; jackets to layer, stretch trousers and jeans with party wear coming in later in the year. What about accessories? I also stock a wide range of accessories and gifts, including bags, shoes, belts, jewellery and, with Christmas just around the corner, gifts for all the family. But also love listening to my customers to see what they would like to see in the shop. 6
“Friendly, personal and attentive.” What do you see in MDV’s future? My ambition for Miss De-Vyliers (MDV) is to create a brand that stands on its own and is recognised as such; bringing the broadest range of products available to ladies who would like to feel good about themselves. I realise that if I am to achieve my goals, I need to work with other great people and I need to differentiate my brand from the market. To this end, I am building relationships not just in the UK, but internationally, including suppliers and other fashion houses. I will be selling clothes that are not available in any other outlet in the UK plus a range of MDV own manufactured garments.
What makes MDV special? A passionate believer in collaboration, I am establishing partnerships with like-minded business owners, so I can offer my customers other lines such as lingerie and baby clothes. Also ethical fashion, using items from sustainable sources. This is a major focus going forward. Is online good for you? Yes, Miss De-Vyliers is working well online and I am investing a lot of resource into making sure the online experience is as productive as it can be. Anything exciting to add? I have a few pieces of exciting news at this current time. I am about to launch my own range of Miss De-Vyliers shirts and blouses.
I am expanding my boutique, so as of September 23rd 2019, I will be taking over the shop next door, hopefully opening on Friday October 25th 2019 which will be the first anniversary of the opening of the first Miss De-Vyliers boutique. The next twelve months are going to be really exciting and I look forward to seeing the benefit of the hard work I have put in really paying off.
“I will be selling clothes that are not available in any other outlet in the UK plus a range of MDV own manufactured garments. 7

A new medical facial aesthetics clinic has arrived in Pontyclun. This collaboration between Jeremy Isaac and Robert Howell brings a combined thirty years of skill and experience in non-surgical facial aesthetics.
WISH
LIVE LIFE YOUNG With this comes an ethos that puts your safety first and foremost, adopting and following protocols that satisfy the regulations of a medical environment. Why choose Wish? They have extensive knowledge and understanding of the structures of the face and how time and age impacts and changes these structures which allows for a treatment approach safely focused on a naturalised rejuvenation of your looks. Their ethos is ‘Look better, don’t look treated!’ What does Wish Skin Clinic offer? Alongside the age appropriate rejuvenation management, Wish offers the options for corrective and enhancement treatments. Improvements to facial features that maybe you never quite liked; the nose that’s not as straight as you may like, the lips that don’t allow you to wear your lipstick as you would wish.
All these things and more can be discussed in an informed consultation, and the best way forward for your individual needs assessed and accommodated in your own personal plan of care. So, who are Jeremy and Robert? Both are dentists, with three decades each of clinical patient management and a combined thirty years of facial aesthetics experience behind them. Both justifiably comfortable with the accolade of Advanced Level Injectors in the medical non-surgical facial aesthetic world. Jeremy Isaac is the owner and Clinical Director of Wish Skin Clinic and the adjacent Live Life Smiling Cosmetic Dental Centre just twenty minutes down the M4 at Tai Bach.
There are not many, if any, more qualified and experienced medical facial aesthetic practitioners in Wales or the UK with the qualifications of BDS LDS RCS PgDipCosmeticMedicne, Board member of WACS, Founder of TAP and SWAP, Teoxane Faculty National trainer for Wales and Regional trainer for West Country to his name. Alongside his own extensive and successful Facial Aesthetic Clinic, Jeremy runs a training academy, where he educates and teaches medical practitioners the Art and Science of safe and effective Facial Aesthetic patient management. Robert Howell is Wales born and educated. After twelve years in his dental clinic in south Leicester, Robert relocated to the Channel Islands eighteen years ago.
“ Their ethos is ‘Look better, don’t look treated!’” 8
Robert has been treating a select Channel Island patient base for their facial aesthetic needs for ten of those years from his St Helier base, as owner and Clinical Director of Your Smile Jersey Dental Clinic incorporating Robert Howell facial aesthetics. Robert, originally a Bridgend boy, has been returning home from the Channel Islands to run clinical sessions out of Jeremy’s Tai Bach facilities on a fortnightly basis for over three years. If you choose to attend Wish and place yourself in the hands of Jeremy or Robert for your advice and management, you truly are placing yourself in knowledgeable, experienced and skilful hands.
And if you need more extensive work? Wish at Pontyclun is a small clinic facility that will be able to offer a full range of injectable facial aesthetic treatment. However, if your needs fall above this treatment range, you will be welcome to attend the ‘headquarters’ at Tai Bach, where an extensive option of further treatments are delivered in a truly beautiful clinic setting by Jeremy’s wife Jayne and the clinic staff available there. How to get in touch… Wish Skin Clinic 16 Cowbridge Road, Pontyclun CF72 9ED 07594 641259 www.wishclinic.co.uk Also at Wish Skin Clinic Port Talbot 01639 891200
Does all of this knowledge and experience mean higher costs? Not at all, you will find that their price structure is extremely competitive for the expertise available. 9
Dawns Healing Light opened its first shop in Pencoed in 2008. The business has since evolved to the shop and healing rooms we see today in Pyle Garden Village. Opened Easter 2019 it was custom built to our own design to ensure a welcoming and relaxed experience. Owner Dawn tells us more.
DAWNS HEALING LIGHT
Who is the owner? Myself, Dawn Todd. I am a reiki master and crystal practitioner with a passion to help people of all ages and conditions. Manning the shop are my husband Gary along with Peter and Claire. Why Pyle Garden Village? We love the fact that Pyle Garden Centre is a family run business who take an interest in and support the businesses located there. Right from our first meeting with Rob we knew this was the place for us. With the help of his team they have created a wonderful ‘oasis of tranquillity’ for us (through the magical doorway!) which everyone seems to love. What do you offer your customers? Exceptional customer service, great choice, quality and value are the cornerstones of our business. 10
All the items stocked are personally selected by Dawn who has an instinctive understanding for what our customers are looking for. We love the fact that people just what to be in the calming atmosphere of our shop, enjoying the lovely energy from the crystals, soothing sounds of music and lovely aromas from the incense. Do you offer therapies as well? If so, tell us more. The therapy rooms were the key addition in moving to Pyle, providing a fabulous location for Dawn to offer Reiki and crystal treatments together with training courses. In addition, we have built up a group of therapists and mediums that offer additional services from our premises, ranging from reflexology, sound therapy, numerology, psychic art and tarot readings.
With plans for additional treatments to be introduced over the coming weeks. What are your most popular products and why? Tumble stones and incense are our most popular items with everyone loving the selections on offer (the biggest range available in Wales). Often selected for the healing powers associated with that particular crystal or maybe that they just look amazing. Alongside the crystals we have a wide selection of salt lamps, rainbow makers, dreamcatchers, wolves, dragons, fairies and angel figurines and pictures that are lovely to look at. People love that fact they can select an unusual present that often means something special to the person they are buying it for.
What do you think makes Dawn’s Healing Light special? The calming and lovely feeling you get just from walking into the shop combined with the expert knowledge available to help select the right crystal or item that just right for you. The first visit is never the last with many customers visiting us again and again, encouraging their family and friends to see for themselves why people love this location so much. Our 5-star customers feedback say we are a ‘gem of a shop’ and we hope to continue to offer the same great range, service and value our customers have come to appreciate.
“ A fabulous location for Dawn to offer Reiki and crystal treatments and training courses.” 11

Having your wedding reception in a lighthouse is what dreams are made of. Stephanie and Steve made their dream a reality by choosing Nash Point for their special day. The date, 1st April 2019 (no fooling!) also happened to be Stef ’s 50th birthday. Stef tells us more.
NASH POINT WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE
When and where did your fiancé Steve propose? Steve and I were sat in our caravan in the Cotswolds one afternoon last summer sharing a lovely late lunch and talking about how happy we were. We had never talked about marriage before, but it just developed during our conversation. We came back from our weekend away full of stories of weddings and lighthouses! Why did you decide to choose Nash Point as your wedding venue? Having both been married before, we had had the big white weddings and we wanted this to be more intimate - somewhere really unique rather than a county hall or a hotel. We came across Nash Point as a possible venue and we both knew instantly this was going to be a very special place for us. I lost my mum a few years back and one of our happiest days was having a picnic and cloud watching on the cliff tops alongside the lighthouse. Steve is an ex diver, so his love of the sea sealed it for us.
Did you look at other venues before choosing Nash Point? We looked at venues online, but many were too large for us or felt too impersonal. Nash Point can hold up to 25 comfortably so it was just perfect for us.
They did an amazing job and took all the stress away from me.
Did you work with their wedding planner? The team at Trinity House were so helpful and were keen to make sure our day was just right for us. Trinity House were updating some of the décor and sent us images so we could see what they were like. Nothing was too much trouble and they gave us access the day before to dress the lighthouse.
The ground floor is very much a working lighthouse area but we dressed it up with lanterns, garlands and a wisteria tree. The second floor has the kitchen and toilet and a full-length mirror so you can make last minute adjustments to dress and hair (quite important bearing in mind the cliff top location).
What food did you have? Food is not supplied by the lighthouse though they have a kitchen with fridge so that you can bring your own food. My sister Pip and her husband Alex run an Italian restaurant in Key West in Florida and they flew in for our wedding and took over the food and drink. 12
How did the day go? We were incredibly lucky with the weather. Blue skys and sunshine. Lucky indeed for a location on a cliff top!
The next floor has the original light and glass located in it - a fantastic piece of history and a lovely place to take photos and pause while the music changes ready for the bride’s assent. The wedding floor was stunning. A lady called Karen Thomson who owns Panache Wales did the décor in the lighthouse and she transformed the place into a dream.
There were garlands and fairy lights up all the railings, wisteria trees on each floor and collections of lanterns, candles, and the most amazing drift wood and flowers. The effect was stunning.
Finally, we converged on the grass outside for a champagne toast and to put a seal on the most perfect event ever. The beauty and quirkiness of the lighthouse added to our special day making this an event like no other.
The ceremony was perfect. My son Sam gave me away which was very important to me. With its being such as small gathering, we didn’t have a best man or bridesmaids, but Steve’s sons were heavily involved and my sister, Pip, read a wonderful poem. We were able to personalise our lines and vows – the Registrars from Barry were lovely ladies who seemed to relish the special day as much as we all did. After the ceremony took place Steve and I went off with Karl Baker our photographer for our photos, some inside the lighthouse and some outside and on the cliff tops. Our guests went to the floor above for food and drinks and then were able to go on up to the very top where the light was rotating. With windows on all floors and on all sides the views of the sea and cliffs is magical.
What was the most special part of the day? That is hard to pinpoint as it was all so magical. Every element had its own beauty and special memory. The lighthouse itself with the different floors – each with its own character and purpose broke up the event into separate wonderful moments.
Would you recommend Nash Point to friends? If you want a small intimate, unique location with people who care about your day as much as you do then you cannot find a better place than Nash Point. We feel incredibly honoured and privileged to have been married there. Where did you honeymoon? We had a week in Scotland in a gorgeous log cabin located on the banks of a salmon river near Oban. We had lots of walks around the islands off the west coast and cosy pub dinners - the perfect honeymoon.
“Nothing was too much trouble and they gave us access the day before to dress the lighthouse.” What was working with the people at Nash Point like? The Trinity House ladies were so fantastic making sure everything ran as it should. Throughout the day they were there when you needed them and melted into the background when we didn’t. 13

THE BROGUE
SUMMER BANQUET On a warm, summer evening in July, in just one hour, the beautiful Morgan Arcade was transformed into a banquet hall by Chris Macnamara, owner of The Brogue Trader, and Spiro Borg (Spiro’s Fine Dining Caterers) and their teams to raise valuable funds for City Hospice. 22
Putting on impressive events is nothing new to Chris and Spiro and the dynamic duo have earned an enviable reputation for the high quality of their events. We spoke to Chris the following day and this is what he had to say, “Last night, at the home of my Cardiff business, and with the help of my dear friend Spiro, and some good friends, we turned the Morgan Arcade into a Banqueting Hall in just one hour. We put out twenty-four trestle tables, set up a stage and PA equipment, a G&T bar, and prepared for 150 guests all in aid of Charity (#thecityhospice), a local hospice charity close to the hearts of us all here at the The Brogue Trader.”
Chris added, “On the eve of the Welsh National Rugby squad going to Switzerland to embark on their World Cup training camp, Rob Howley kindly agreed to join us for a Q&A, joined by injured Welsh Captain Ellis Jenkins and hosted by ex-Welsh rugby legend Rupert Moon.” The night went off with a bang. As guests arrived, local soulster James Williams sang his heart out, along with acclaimed magician Bryan Gunton who entertained the 150 guests. Chris added, “None of this would have been possible without the help and support of my team and some great friends, as all the people I’ve mentioned gave their time and services for free! We can’t thank them enough.” Heineken sponsored the beer and cider. Fine Wines Direct sponsored all the wine. Hensol Castle sponsored the G&T reception and Spiro and his team sponsored the three courses of fabulous food: Chicken and leek terrine with homemade breads was their first trick,
followed by a wowing main of roasted loin of pork with bubble and squeak. The show-stopping dessert consisted of traditional sherry trifle. “With this amazing support the whole event could be put on for free, allowing us to raise a whopping £12,000 in just three hours!” added Chris. “I’m incredibly proud and, frankly, it’s amazing what relationships can achieve.” The Brogue Does Beaujolais V This won’t be the last event organised by Chris either. The now legendary Brogue Does Beaujolais will enjoy its fifth event on November 21st 2019. Tickets we believe are available but this is one of the hottest events in town so you may already have missed the boat.
“Rob Howley kindly agreed to join us for a Q&A.” 23

Boofy’s Fish and Chip Shop has been established since 2000 and is award-winning for many reasons.
BOOFY’S Is it the fantastic position (with sea views to die for)? The quality of the produce? Or the friendly staff?
There are vegetarian and vegan options and gluten-free chips (and gf fish on request). Apparently Boofy’s is the only fish and chip shop on the Island that serves gf chips. There’s usually a homemade special on offer and a choice of kids’ meals. They also offer the popular Sidoli’s ice cream.
We think it’s all three and much more. So, what’s on offer? All that you can expect from a good fish and chip shop. Obviously, fish and chips, pies and pasties (Peter’s Pies “because their consistently good”), faggots ‘n’ peas, varieties of sausage (jumbo, sausage-in-batter, saveloy, hot dogs) burgers and more.
What’s popular? Fish and chips and curry and chips and gravy and chips. Customers can’t get enough of them! What makes Boofy’s special? Boofy himself isn’t one to brag but he is proud of his friendly and helpful staff. He has always believed that “If you do anything, you have to do it right”. It’s all about good produce at good prices which makes everyone happy and keeps them coming back. “Had fab fish and chip supper this evening... best ever... as always x.” “I love this place!” “Best chips in Barry.” “Gluten free as well-lush!”

Christmas comes early for Marco’s, the Barry Island icon.
MARCO’S It’s been a great year for Marco’s and Barry island even before the announcement by James Corden and Ruth Jones that they would be returning to Barry and Barry Island to shoot a Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special to be aired on Christmas Day. Owner Marco Zeraschi said, “When I got the call that James and Ruth were doing a Christmas Special I was over
the moon. We’ve had a great year on Barry Island but that news, and the subsequent filming and seeing the Gavin & Stacey gang again was the icing on the cake.” There has been much to celebrate in the Zeraschi household as wife Ruth launched Mrs Marco’s In Porthkerry Country Park which has been a runaway success. “I’m so proud of Ruth and all the family. We’ve worked really hard this year and, more than anything, it’s been fun.”
“Seeing the Gavin & Stacey gang again was the icing on the cake.” Marco’s, and Barry Island, are favourite haunts of Vale Life ( Jennifer being a Barry girl) so we can’t wait to see the Christmas Special. Marco's Promenade, Barry Island CF62 5TQ

Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so, in secret, creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, have created a one hour special, which will appear on our screens at Christmas.
G AVIN & STACEY BACK TO BARRY ISLAND
Bafta and multi-award-winning Gavin and Stacey, starring Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, supported by a cast including James Corden, Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman, is set to return for a one-off special this Christmas on BBC One. The hit British sitcom, created and written by Ruth Jones and James Corden, will be produced by Fulwell 73, Tidy Productions and Baby Cow Productions. Ruth Jones and James Corden said, “Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so, in secret, we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.
We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas.” Gavin & Stacey broadcast over three series (plus a Christmas special) from 2007 to 2010 on the BBC. Gavin (Mathew Horne), an ordinary boy from Essex in England, and Stacey (Joanna Page), an ordinary girl from Barry in Wales, spoke on the phone to each other every day at work, they finally met, fell in love and got married. The series went on to explore the simple love story of these two young people from different parts of the UK, and the impact their relationship had on their friends and family. The sitcom was a breakthrough hit for BBC Three and the 2008 Christmas special and third series moved to premiere on BBC One. The shows 2010 New Year’s Day finale had record ratings for the series with 10.25m viewers. 33
The Gavin and Stacey series was, and still is, a huge boost for Barry, and Barry Island in particular, in terms of footfall and till ringing for the businesses on the Island. No doubt, it will have the same effect when the show airs. The recent filming that took place certainly caused a buzz around the Vale and has visitors driving in from across the UK to catch a glimpse of the show’s stars. We’re certainly fans at Vale Life and can’t wait to see the finished result. We’re not gonna lie to you, we’re dead excited!

Plans include reinstating the trees throughout the town, three magnificent lit 15ft trees, memorial garlands and last but not least, beautiful warm white cluster lights for the 15th Century Town Hall and The Square. No property will be left unadorned as the lights continue throughout the town.
With a mutual passion for celebrating Christmas and the wish to Light up Llantwit and Boverton, and after researching into funding requirements, the committee unveiled an ambitious target of £10,000.
With the traditional lantern parade, Father Christmas, and a fabulous switch on event on the 30th November, it promises to be an occassion to remember!
With donations from The Town Council, local businesses, fundraising events and the fantastic Llantwit Major Community, £6,000 has been raised so far.

Edna Hardy, 91, has lived in Llantwit Major for fifty years. Her late husband Donald Ross McGregor passed away fifteen years ago. Edna reminisces with us about how Llantwit used to be and what it’s like living here now.
MY VALE LIFE What was living in Llantwit Major like in the “old days”? It was lovely. There was a town hall which held regular dances, whist drives, magic lantern shows and tap dancing. There was a social club which held bingo on a Wednesday and Sunday; not that we were into bingo. There were two bakers, three butchers, two fish and chip shops, a sweetie shop, two garages, an iron monger, a draper and a dress shop. We used to live in Wynd Street and there was no running water and a toilet in the garden. What did you do for a living? I worked for the RAF at St Athan for forty years as a PA. I had lovely bosses. Where did you and Donald meet? We met in the town hall at one of the dances. He asked me to dance and the rest was history. Don loved gardening. He played the bagpipes and we learnt Scottish dancing and were then part of a team and gave demonstrations.
We used to entertain a lot when he was alive.
Where do you shop now? I must admit, since developing epilepsy, I struggle to get into town but when I do, I love to visit the Chocolate Shop. I love chocolate. Elaine, the owner says I’m her best customer! I love all chocolate, but Lindt is my favourite. My fridge is full of dolly mixtures and raspberry ruffles but mainly various varieties of Lindt! I don’t manage to cook much anymore so I tend to buy ready meals from Marks and Spencer and the local Co-Op. How do you pass your time? I still love clothes so, when I’m in Marksies for food, I also buy a few bits and pieces there. I also watch TV and do a bit of reading. Don and I always loved bowling so, along with a few friends, go to Torquay on trips and indulge in my passion of bowling. It brings back great memories. 39
As well as massage, reflexology and laser lipolysis inch loss treatments, Blush Beauty in Llantwit Major is excited to offer Radio Frequency facials.
BLUSH BEAUTY Radio Frequency Facials are known in the ‘celeb’ world as the “Facelifting Facial” and the go-to facial to really help keep ageing at bay and reverse the signs already there. It works by using the RF wand over the skin which emits a frequency that actually tricks the skin into producing extra collagen and elastin. These are the natural skin ingredients that keep
it supple, taught and younger looking and sadly they deplete as we age. I think the reason that people are preferring the RF facial to other wellknown electrical facials is because it is cheaper but just as effective and completely painless.
Special Vale Life Christmas Offer! However, during the run up to Christmas, Blush Beauty have a special offer for all Vale Life readers on a course of six treatments. Well, after all, everyone wants to look their very best for those Christmas do’s, don’t they?
Combined with a deep cleanse and scrub, this relaxing 35 min facial can make a large difference with just one treatment.
Blush Beauty Specialists offer a huge range of beauty treatments from gel manicures, spray tans, make-up, waxing, aesthetics and much, much more.
What treatments are popular this autumn/winter? Our most popular treatment all yearround including autumn and winter is nails. We have a huge variety of colours and glitters by different bigname brands.During the wintertime, we tend to move away from using the bright summery colours and turn to the warmer tones in autumn like purples, browns, reds - which is one of our favourite seasons.
What do you think makes Blush the go-to salon? It’s definitely the affordability of our treatments and the friendliness of all our therapists. Do you offer treatments outside of the salon? We offer make-up outside of the salon for weddings, parties and more. We have a range of bridal packages available for brides-to-be and their family and friends. 40

Horse Sense: Sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts.
HORSE SENSE Vale Solicitors Advocates & Mediators - Lawyers with Horse Sense. Michael Morgan, director of Vale Solicitors, thinks that pretty well sums up the ethos of his firm. He also hankers back to the gentler times of the firm’s founder, Thomas Rees, Solicitor and Mayor of Cowbridge in the 19th Century, when horses were the main means of local transport. Mr Rees who would write to a client in Pendoylan: “I will ride down to see you next Wednesday afternoon”. “Unlike Mr Rees, I probably won’t ride down to see you,” says Michael. “I leave the riding to my children. At my age, I don’t bounce anymore. We welcome regular personal meetings with clients at our offices or their own homes. The hot topic remains wills and powers of attorney - perhaps the most important documents that you should make.”
“Nor do I expect you to wait until “next Wednesday afternoon”. I provide my clients with my personal email and mobile so that I can be contacted when needed.” The firm retains close links with the rural community and is pleased to have sponsored horse classes at The Vale of Glamorgan Show this year and to provide a new Cup for the Pony Club. Vale Solicitors are accredited by the Law Society for Quality Conveyancing and also have a couple of extra talents: They are among the forerunners of mediation in Ssouth Wales - reducing the time, stress and expense of litigation. Jon Hewitson and Liz Hunt are accredited by the Law Society as Family Law Mediators. Michael is accredited as a Civil and Commercial Mediator by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. 42

If you love craft beer and spirits then perhaps it’s time to take a trip to...
THE ATIG
We chat to owner Richard Morris to find out why he chose Llantwit Major to set up his latest venture. Richard, please tell us a little about the business? We started wholesaling Welsh bottled beer back in 2015 and the business has really grown from there. In 2016 we opened This is Beer in Porthcawl, followed by The Little Bar on the Bridge last year. The experience of running the two really showed there was a growing appetite for what the independent producers were offering, from craft beer to unique gins and rums. The Atig in Llantwit is the newest addition. Our aim was really to create something a bit different, showcasing some fantastic independent producers.
We specialise in craft beers and spirits from a range of breweries and distilleries across Wales and the UK and from further afield. Offering something people hopefully won’t find in the supermarkets. People can buy straight off the shelf and enjoy in-house or stock up and take home.
“We specialise in craft beers and spirits.” Why Llantwit? It sort of just happened, the space became available and it fitted well with the format of the other two bars. Llantwit is a really nice town so it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. 46
What’s the feedback been like since you’ve opened? We’ve had a great response so far, craft beer and gin are really popular at the moment and people seem extremely keen to try new things from the range of craft beers, ciders, spirits, and wine we stock. The Gins in particular have been really popular! What makes The Atig special? It’s a small venue and I think that helps to create a nice atmosphere for customers. People seem to enjoy meeting new people, having a chat and trying something they’ve never tried before. We've certainly had many people through the door who were adamant they knew their drink of choice and have now been converted to craft beer.
We also offer beer flights so that people can sample a few different beers at once. Why do you think craft beers and spirits are so popular right now? I think essentially beer has become interesting again. When you look back at the binge drinking culture of the nineties and noughties where people drank to get drunk, there wasn’t a huge variety on offer. We’ve really started to move on. It’s not just about drinking to get drunk anymore, it’s about allowing people to have conversations about good quality beer.
The Atig 10A Poundfield, Llantwit Major CF61 1DL Opening hours Tuesday - Thursday 4:00pm - 10:30pm Friday - Saturday 4:00pm - 11:00pm Sunday 4:00pm - 10:30pm

P ENCOED HOUSE ESTATE THE PERFECT FAIRYTALE WEDDING VENUE Offering an idyllic and serene setting in the heart of the south Wales countryside, Pencoed House Estate provides the perfect fairytale wedding venue for the most important occasion of your lives.
Huw and Helen Hall chose Pencoed House for their special day and want to share their experience with us. How did you two meet? We were originally in school together and then met thirty years later at a mutual family event. Why did you decide to choose Pencoed House as your wedding venue? We loved the warmth of the place and the team with their overall desire to enhance our special day in every way. Did you look at other venues before choosing Pencoed House? Yes, we looked at various Cardiff locations but Pencoed stood out as the most unique venue. Did you work with their wedding planner? Yes. Did you use their caterers? How was the food? Pencoed House have a great collaboration with Emma Jenkins team (ejcaterers) which also made things very easy for us. 52
The food for the wedding breakfast was fantastic with everyone tucking into a deconstructed beef wellington but one of the real hits were the pies served in the evening. How did the day go? Fabulously. Everyone had a great day commenting on the warmth of the atmosphere and the celebratory feel for so many of our friends and family. What was the most special part of the day? The ceremony was bilingual and as I am a harpist, we had harp music before the ceremony and during the signing of the register. The registrar combined with the flowers and Jamie’s team created a magical atmosphere for us to commit to each other. Did you and your guests stay at Pencoed House? If so, what was that experience like? We had family staying at all the luxurious, relaxing rooms at Pencoed House. The cottage was great for us all to get ready and the kitchen there was very useful to keep everyone going before the day began. The full breakfast served to everyone the following morning gave us a great chance to reminisce as a family.
What was working with the team at Pencoed House like? It was an absolute delight to work with Jamie and the team. Very clear planning was apparent based on their experience and this contributed significantly to the success of the day. They were always ready to suggest ideas to enhance our experience and to reassure when we were uncertain. The obvious familiarity of working with ejcaterers and Julian, The Florist, Penarth as well as the registrar added to our confidence prior to the day itself. Would you recommend Pencoed House to friends/colleagues? Absolutely no hesitation and I hope we can hold other family occasions there. We understand you didn’t want wedding gifts but instead asked your guests to send contributions to the Horatio’s Garden Charity. Yes, Horatio’s Garden is a national charity which improves the lives of everyone affected by spinal injury through creating and nurturing beautiful gardens in NHS spinal injury centres. There’s more information on the charity online at www.horatiosgarden.org.uk
Where did you honeymoon? We had the trip of a lifetime to South America and Antarctica reminiscing regularly on our wonderful day at Pencoed House.

If you live in Rhoose, you will no doubt have heard about Legal & General’s plans for Model Farm. If their planning application for a 110 acre business park is successful, it would almost certainly mean the eviction of the current farming family, not to mention changing a beautiful landscape for good.
NEW MODEL A RMY It would be easy at this point to paint Legal & General as an evil company bent on tearing up the countryside, but they are the land owner and, from what we understand, this speculation around airports is not uncommon. Having said that, and with the recent climate emergency noises coming from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, you’d think this sort of development would be the last thing anyone wants or needs with climate change and environmental concerns high on everyone’s agenda.
For most of us, assuming it goes ahead, it’ll simply ruin the view and add thirty minutes to our commute. For the ecology of the area, who knows? There is diverse flora and fauna across the whole site and development would almost certainly disrupt even more species that border the site. Even the alleged promises of land being donated to Porthkerry Country Park just doesn’t cut it when what’s left afterwards will, in most people’s opinion, be a blot on the landscape.
There are suggestions that 2,000 jobs may be created. That just seems pie in the sky. But for one family, the Jenkins, this will effectively shatter their farming dreams. So, perhaps it would be good to know a little more about the family the development will displace and who will, no doubt, be affected the most.
In 1935 Griffith Jenkins, his wife Rachel and five sons moved to Model Farm. The farm was owned by the Lewis family who had a few farms in the area. Since those early days, the farm has been worked by another two generations of the Jenkins family, namely Bromley Jenkins (Rhys’ grandfather) and currently Gethin Jenkins (Rhys’ father). Rhys has always wanted to continue this tradition, but Legal & General’s proposed development will put an end to those aspirations. Although farming has changed a lot since those early days, Model Farm and its beautiful rolling landscape has not. From parts of the farm, you can see most types of modern transport; the railway viaduct at Porthkerry - the Bristol Channel the airport and, of course, the roads and cycle tracks. Some of the views are truly amazing. 58
Without any doubt, this proposed development would see those views lost forever. With over 100 acres being built upon to provide warehouses/units for the industry, along with a hotel and car parking. Gethin said, “I’m very concerned about the future of my son. The first thing we would have to do is find accommodation. Where is he going to live? How will he carry on? Farming is in our blood.” On the opposite side of the road to the farm, there is a block of land that, he tells me, is owned by the Vale Of Glamorgan Council. I ask him why aren’t they using that? “It is approximately fifty(ish) acres and adjoins the airport,” he says. “Nothing has been done on this ground for thirty years. If there is a need for units and warehousing, surely this would be the obvious place to start!”
“ Where is he going to live? How will he carry on? Farming is in our blood.”
“As the airport usage is relatively low, it can’t be right that an entire farm can be lost for a purely speculative development to go ahead. Could the Council not take into consideration the vast amount of empty hangar and storage space at St Athan? St Athan has always seemed to be the logical extension to the airport - it has a runway for goodness sake!” Local transport infrastructure is already struggling to cope with the expanding population of Rhoose. Traffic into Barry and on to Cardiff at peak times is horrendous - ask anyone who queues every morning and evening. The Weycock Cross and Five Mile Lane “improvements” have been a debacle - cutting off the water main twice plus the constant delays (and on many days, no sign of the contractors). But we digress. The proposed development will hide views of ancient woodland and a scenic valley. Also, the effects of such a large-scale development on the natural wildlife and ecology, will be massive but it will be the Jenkins family that suffer the most.
Gethin said, “I’m very concerned about the future of my son and his family. The first thing we would have to do is find accommodation. Where are they going to live? What’s he going to be able to carry on with? Farming is in our blood!”
“ Big business moves in and the environment is lost forever.” Rhys said, “I’ve grown up and thought I would farm forever, it’s all I wanted to do. It’s a kick in the teeth seeing my dad get upset. He’s worked his whole life, as has his father and grandfather, to make this farm a success. I can’t help but feel sorry for them after all the effort they’ve put in over the years.” As I write this, I’m reminded of the Manics song “If you tolerate this, then your children will be next”. Whether you’re a tribe in Brazil or a tenant farming family in Rhoose, the net effect is the same - big business moves in and the environment is lost forever, and people lose their homes. And while this is happening, it’s easy to see why the victims, and they are, think no one cares. 59
In Rhoose though, there clearly are people who care about what happens to the Jenkins family. A group has been set up to fight the development. You can contact them at the address below. They can provide advice on how to make your objections heard. Perhaps you can join the New Model Army and save Model Farm from extinction. If, however, you aren’t motivated to support the Jenkins family in their fight to keep their home, just remember, it might be yours next time.

Cowbridge has always been known as a foodie destination, and for good reason, as it has a good number of quality establishments catering for a variety of tastes. But there’s always room for a fresh approach.
HARRY’S
Owners Hayley and Drew Donaldson, who currently own a pub in Llanharry, a nightclub and a security business previously in Australia. They moved over here five years ago from Indonesia. They have two children aged 16 and 12, who also work at Harry’s. The family live nearby and love Cowbridge as a town, but felt it needed something new. “Cowbridge is expanding with lots of new houses and a retirement village so we felt the location was perfect for what we are offering,” says Hayley.
“ There’s also a great selection of ales; fifteen in total.”
“Our customers are loving our Celtic Pride steaks, our local lamb and seafood dishes plus a fusion of other dishes from our chef ’s Catalonian background and other influences picked up from his travels around the world over the last two years,” she adds. There’s also a great selection of ales; fifteen in total, and thirty-five gins, all wines by the glass, champagnes and, of course, great coffee. Harry’s also offers gluten free options on request and has vegan and vegetarian options. Children get to enjoy the same as adults but in smaller portions. What makes Harry’s special we ask? “We’d like to think the decor and food are a little different to anything else you will find in the area.” 63
Harry’s 2 Westgate, Cowbridge CF71 7AR 01446 771450 Opening hours Monday to Thursday 10am - 12pm Friday and Saturday 10am - 1am Sunday 12pm - 6pm
If you’re a fan of The Penny Farthing, Cowbridge, you’ll already know you can drop in for breakfast, coffee, brunch, lunch or afternoon tea seven days a week, including bank holidays, but now the team are excited to announce…
We caught up with Mohammed to find out a little more about their evening aspirations. Why are you opening in the evenings? Customers keep asking me why are you not open in the evening? So, we’’ll try it! As well as our monthly theme nights, we’ll be opening as an a la carte restaurant Friday and Saturday evenings from September! We will be open from 6pm to 9.30pm, and are taking bookings from now, including for large tables, and the run up to Christmas - is it too soon to mention Christmas? What will the offering be? The focus for the evening menu will be on simple, fresh food, with grilled steaks, fish, seafood and vegetables, including cauliflower steaks.
THE P ENNY
Our fish will be supplied by Ashton Fishmongers, and meat will be sourced from Barratts Fine Meats, a butcher’s shop in Rhoose sourcing their meats from across the Vale of Glamorgan for forty years.
And what about drinks? Carefully selected wines (from Fine Wines Direct) and hand-crafted cocktails (think Whiskey Sour or French 75) will be a big feature! We’re proud of our customer service and will always try to source any particular wines or seafood, for example, that you might be hoping to find - if it’s not on our menu, just ask. And the ambience? A warm, cosy atmosphere, twinkling candlelight, delicious home-cooked food. 64
The Penny Farthing has long been established as a good food restaurant, but in recent years has only been open in the daytime, other than for theme nights and private events. So you’ll still be available for private bookings… Yes, throughout the week, and during our evening openings on Fridays and Saturdays, we’d be delighted to accommodate individual and group bookings - just let us know your requirements in advance. Our vision is for a restaurant that offers reasonably priced, healthy food to be enjoyed with friends and family.
“We’re proud of our customer service.”
FARTHING AT NIGHT Who will be at the helm in the kitchen? We are so delighted that our talented chef Peter will be heading up our evening team. We are honoured to have Peter on board - he has a wealth of experience, having trained at Michelin star Thackeray’s, cooked for the Opera at Glyndebourne, toured as a chef with Cirque de Soleil, cooked for the athletes and broadcasters at both the London and Sochi Olympics, and for artists and their crews at Glastonbury and Reading Festivals.
DAYTIME Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm AFTERNOON TEA Monday - Saturday 2:30pm - 5:00pm Penny at NIGHT Friday - Saturday 6:00pm - 9:30pm The Penny Farthing 54 High Street Cowbridge CF71 7AH 01446 774999

Lanelay Hall is an extensively refurbished Victorian mansion in the heart Talbot Green – a real hidden gem. And what a gem it is. Beautifully refurbished, the Hall is situated on the eastern base of the Garth Maelwg mountain (known locally as the Smaelwg).
LANELAY HALL
“We’re passionate about providing every guest with outstanding customer service catered to their personal needs.” Dating back to 1873, Lanelay Hall has been home to a succession of well-heeled gentry families throughout its colourful history. Hosting many special events and impressive family celebrations across the generations, many of which can be seen in photographs and images displayed throughout the hall. In 1951 South Wales Fire and Rescue made Lanelay Hall their Headquarters until 2007. Owner Dave Edwards says, “We are always thrilled to welcome those that were stationed, worked or visited the fire headquarters over the years. We hear so many lovely stories and special memories.” In 2018 Lanelay Hall was gifted the original station bell which has pride of place in reception. Lanelay Hall Hotel opened its doors in 2017 after an extensive renovation project. The timeless architecture and original features have been married with a unique contemporary design for the interior. It is refreshingly different and has a lovely vibe.
All bedrooms are individually designed with bespoke furniture and luxurious bed linen and the fabulous suites are all unique with rolltop baths and king size beds with plenty of space to relax and re-charge. Classic rooms and deluxe rooms all have en-suite bathrooms with a walk-in shower. You can wake every morning and enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast just as you like it. Dave is keen to stress that everyone is welcome at Lanelay Hall. “You don’t have to be staying at the Hall to enjoy its superb facilities. Business-people drop by for meetings and we have a steady stream of lunch and dinner guests, and locals pop in all the time for teas and coffees,” he says.
One of its most popular offerings is the gorgeous Tribe Spa. The Spa fits the bill perfectly, following the theme of a ‘break from the norm’. The all natural (and Welsh) award-winning Tribe517 product range brings unusual and glorious treatment experiences to life, with its “dazzling fragrances, hot barley bags for comfort, and techniques to heighten your awareness”. And they’re not stopping there - Spa Phase 2 is due to open in spring 2020 and we know it will be fabulous. “Most of all we want to make you feel special, look for the little treats and surprises all along your journey with us,” says Dave. “Every visit promises to be a little different than the last. That’s the Lanelay promise.” Lanelay Hall is the perfect venue for christenings, family gatherings, private dining and intimate weddings. They’ll soon be publishing their Christmas calendar of events. To find out more, visit the website or drop in – we promise you’ll not be disappointed.

Blu Hair Design salon owners Hayley and Alexis Williams, and their team at this popular Penarth salon, recently bid farewell to one of their key Blu team members, Sue Keenan. Sue has been an integral part of Blu for many years and will be missed by both colleagues and clients alike.
CH-CH-CH CHANGES
Sally
Shahida
Sue’s professionalism, integrity, warmth and zest for life will be sorely missed at Blu! Rather than a farewell it’s an au-revoir to Sue, as she will still be visiting Blu as a much-loved client and ‘popping up’ behind the reception area from time to time.
Shahida has over fifteen years’ experience in the ‘hair world’ having worked in prestigious salons within Cardiff and across the Vale. Already proving a vital member of the Blu team, she is always on hand for consultations or any hair styling support that you may need.
Two new members who have recently joined the ‘Blu Team’ are Sally, who is stepping into Sue’s shoes to work alongside Claire as Salon Coordinator, and Shahida, an excellent Senior Stylist who is very knowledgeable on all aspects of hairdressing.
With Shahida’s happy, fun and outgoing personality, your visit to Blu will be a memorable and pleasant experience. “Both Sally and Shahida have important roles in the business, it is a pleasure to have them on board,” Alexis and Hayley both agree.
Sally joined Blu in June this year, having been a client at the salon for the past ten years. She says she is as happy as an employee as she has been as a client!
“ She will still be visiting Blu as a much-loved client.” 72

Dean Chamberlain runs Deano’s barbers in Rhoose. This year he celebrates twenty years in business and says he wouldn’t change it for the world.
DEANO’S CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF BARBERING IN RHOOSE
Deano’s has seen businesses come and go in Rhoose but, after twenty years, it endures. For the last three years Dean has worked alongside Jordan Lapton training and teaching him the “mystical ways of the barber” after a customer asked if he had any jobs available. We caught up with Dean and Jordan on a sunny, summer day in Rhoose. Why barbering? Why Rhoose? Gramp was a barber. I was always in his shop as a child. It led me to a part-time job whilst still in school. It was always a dream of mine have my own shop in my home town, Rhoose. This was achieved in 1999. What products and services do you offer? We are a traditionally trained barber shop. The foundations of our skills span several generations. All types of cuts, beard trims, fades are on offer. We also sell some gels and a selection of grooming products. Hairstyles change over the years. It’s good to see the variations. 74
What do you love about your work? Being a part of the local village; talking and interacting with the community. Getting to know people building friendships with clients. In many ways, it’s the social element that’s sometimes more important than the barbering. What has changed over twenty years? A big increase in customers due to the expansion of Rhoose. It used to be a small village – not anymore. But it still has its charm. It’s good to see new people coming to Rhoose and making it their home - they clearly like what I love about it here. What type of customers do you look after? From the very young (we usually give them their first haircut), to the loyal pensioners (sometimes we give them their last). A barber is right at the heart of a village. We see lives passing before us. It’s a real privilege. We also have disabled access - ramps are available and home visits can be made upon request.
There’s a definite motoring theme to the shop. Is that your passion outside work? Certainly is, a much-loved hobby since childhood. I love my track days. I’ve plenty ticked off the list - I’m doing another in a few days. What does the future hold for Deano’s? I’d be happy to just keep doing what I do. I love this business. I love what I do.
TESTIMONIALS
What customers say… “A friendly, personal service that delivers what a customers’ want - as much or as little conversation as a customer needs.” “Great banter. You can come in a bit flat and leave with a big smile on your face. It’s a cool shop with a great atmosphere.” “Next to the local pub, for a man, it’s the heart of the village.”

I’ve always wanted to go to a slimming/ detox retreat. Not because I need to lose weight; my diet is pretty much on point but if you cut me, I bleed vodka! So I took myself away to the Slimmeria Retreat in Ilfracombe, north Devon, for a muchneeded five day detox.
SLIMMERIA RETREAT Merlin Court is an impressive and imposing building resting on top of a hill with fabulous views overlooking the town of Ilfracombe. The building has been beautifully restored and renovated and comprises of boutique style en-suite rooms (some with baths). Imagine stripped wood floors, white walls and chandeliers. As this is a detox retreat, there are no TVs and no kettles or trays with teas, coffees and home-made shortbread biscuits! Or vodka. Our host Galia Grainger set up her first Slimmeria retreat in Sussex. She lost more than four stone herself by following her Russian grandmother’s rules, a mix of Russian orthodox fasting, folk medicine and stern Soviet willpower. She is firm but fair (with a bit more emphasis on the firm!) I arrived on the Sunday along with my fellow guests and our host was there to greet us. More on Galia later. We were a mixed bunch. Two other women, one in her thirties and the other in her forties - a gentleman in his sixties and little, old me. We were all there to shed some pounds and tighten up our flabby bits. Some were fitter than others but, as we found out during the five days, it was very much a team effort.
How each day unfolded... Each day began with the ringing of a bell at 7.30am. We had to be in the dining room for 8am. We began the day with a slice of apple and some lemon water before setting off for one of our many and varied twohour walks. Now, if you don’t know Ilfracombe, then let me tell you it’s a hilly place so the walks all involved hills of some sort or another. The first day our host was kind to us and took us on a walk through the town via the harbour; a proper fishing harbour with working boats. Here, we had a minute to stop and admire the famous Damien Hirst sculpture - Verity - a defiant, naked, pregnant woman holding up a sword as she oversees the comings and goings of the harbour. Love her or hate her, she’s definitely the talk of the town. I was unaware that Damien was a local.
“Our host Galia is firm but fair (with a bit more emphasis on the firm!).” 76
Other walks included the harbour and Hillsborough Torrs Path (south west coast path) and the historic Tarka Trail which follows the journey of Tarka the Otter, from the classic tale by Henry Williamson. As I mentioned earlier, the group was of mixed walking ability, our host set us fitter ones on our way whilst she walked with the less fit. On our return to Merlin Court, we enjoyed breakfast a glass of juice. Each day was a variation of different revitalising ingredients. Then followed an hour long fitness class (which even I found quite tough), and then an hour of yoga (which I’m going to take up on my return).
Did we eat real food? Then lunch. Our meals were all plantbased and included ingredients such as carrots, shredded cabbage, beetroots, broccoli, some nuts and buckwheat/ quinoa with a drizzle of a light oil dressing. At 3pm we had some fruit and a herbal tea. Dinner was at 6pm. This consisted of another salad, broth or soup. We were encouraged to go for another unaccompanied walk (without taking money!) after our fruit, and before dinner, to keep the activity levels up and to lose more weight. I must admit I wasn’t even tempted by the fish and chips, pasties, fudge or afternoon teas. I was on a mission After dinner, there was another activity of either self-defence, dance, belly dancing, pad work in the gym and muscle stretching and meditation classes. The package came with one treatment, but I also opted to have a few more which included lymphatic drainage, a back massage and reflexology during my stay. Lights out was at 9pm.
It was all going well until... Everything was going swimmingly (I did that too at a local leisure centre) until Wednesday. Apparently, the lack of caffeine and carbs sometimes catches up with people, and it did me. I felt nauseous, weak, shaky and had a nasty headache. I was given a couple of raisins (a fast sugar hit) and, quite surprisingly, this sorted me out. It freaked me out though as I thought I was beyond that reaction given my caffeine and sugar free diet. And the verdict? So, did I lose weight? Yes. I lost 5lb (one pound a day) and an inch off my bust, an inch and a half off my waist, and an inch off my hips. The others in the group lost more but, in fairness, I didn’t have that much to lose in the first place. Previous guests have lost between 7-14lbs per week. Would I go again? Definitely. We all know the answer to losing weight is to eat less and move around more but it’s hard when you have to motivate yourself and contend with the working week, the house and the kids. But if you have a few days to spare and you want to kick start your diet, metabolism and tone up in the process, then a trip to Slimmeria could be just the thing to get you into that LBD for Christmas, look and feel great for an upcoming holiday or the start of how you mean to go on.

Gluten - the devil’s food or misunderstood? Gluten undoubtedly has a bad reputation, but does it deserve the slandering it gets? We asked Natural Therapist Angharad Evans, Penarth to explain more.
LET’S TALK GLUTEN What is gluten? Gluten is a natural protein found in foods such as bread, pasta, cracker, oats, processed meats such as sausage. It’s typically associated with baked goods and if you’re a keen baker, or an avid Bake Off fan, you’ll know that the volume of gluten within a loaf, really impacts the taste and texture.
It’s also interesting to note that many people, when in France and eat bread from a patisserie, find that they do not have digestive issues. It may be worth reconsidering the quality of bread you’re eating?
n Also, people find that cooking with white spelt flour is beneficial. People who feel uncomfortable after eating gluten often find that they can tolerate white spelt flour.
What is the problem with gluten? Tasty baked goods aside, gluten can cause havoc to our digestive systems. People can experience symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, bowel problems, headaches, brain fog, tiredness, skin problems, panic attacks and unexplained weight loss. Why are some people intolerant? Celiac Disease is a debilitating auto immune condition. When a celiac digests gluten the immune system attacks the villi of the small intestine because it is mistaking the gluten as a foreign body. The villi can’t carry out their work of absorbing the nutrients from food. Which results in a whole host of horrible symptoms, making that tasty loaf, become more of a blocker to their wellbeing. Having a gluten intolerance is different, as the resulting symptoms are very much milder in comparison to those living with Celiac Disease.
n I increasingly find in my testing of clients who have ligament issues are also gluten intolerant. n Pets, especially dogs are very often gluten intolerant and pet food usually contains gluten. It may be an idea to seek out gluten free pet food for your pet.
What is a gluten free diet? It’s what it says on the tin, this diet involves the removal of gluten. For individuals living with Celiac Disease, or those who are have a gluten intolerance, omitting gluten is a sure way of avoiding debilitating symptoms. Is it a good idea to follow a gluten free diet? Do you feel good on the diet you’re eating now? Do you feel energised, is your mind and concentration sharp and you’re not overweight? If so … carry on! However, if you’re not feeling so good, then it may be worth looking at your diet. Is eating toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta for tea a typical day’s diet for you? If so, it may be worth reducing your gluten intake. 80

CORNISH CREAM Next to West Wales, Cornwall is our favourite staycation destination in the UK. In the past, we’ve always looked for the perfect Cornish sea view but, on this occasion, thought we’d try inland at the beautiful Clowance Estate near Camborne.
Clowance Estate is part of Luxury Lodges, renowned for their hotelquality self-catering accommodation in some of Britain’s best loved holiday destinations – from Cornwall up to the Lake District, with a new property launching in Laugharne this Winter (the Welsh link). Luxury Lodges, which includes Clowance Estate, is owned and managed by Sharon Hurley, and it is Sharon who has been the driver behind the group’s investment in Clowance and its expansion to Laugharne.
Clowance sits in 55 acres of beautiful grounds with ancient woodlands and lakes just outside Camborne. For Sharon, who grew up in Wales, the recent refurbishment and investment surpassing £5 million is the realisation of “a truly monumental season”, and means guests have a new restaurant, bar, and pool facilities, designed with inspiration from the on-site historic manor house and a concept that echoes its elegance and the surrounding meadow land. 82

“ The staff at Clowance are so helpful and a real mine of information if you’re looking for places to visit or dine out.”
We stayed in one of the cottages which are absolutely beautiful inside and out and are a credit to Sharon and her design team. Sharon says, “I believe that you should not have to compromise on style and quality just because you have a family to cater for. We want to offer all the luxuries of hotel-quality accommodation, but with the freedom and flexibility of self-catering. Our range of properties offer something for everyone and cater for the whole family in every stage of life, whether just starting out as a couple or celebrating milestones with multiple generations.” Everything about Clowance is five stars, including its location. It is perfectly positioned at the base of the Cornish peninsula meaning all the very best locations are easily accessible; St Ives, Penzance, Porthcurno, Padstow, Newlyn and Mousehole plus the usual south coast favourites (we even managed to
squeeze in dinner at Rick Stein’s in Porthleven). On our third day, we took a leisurely drive down to Sennen Cove, just around the headland from Land’s End. Absolutely beautiful. Our evenings at Clowance were rounded off nicely with drinks in the bar followed by a relaxing spell in the jacuzzi outside our cottage, sipping a little night cap under the stars - total bliss. As I mentioned earlier, later this year will see the opening of the newest addition to the portfolio, Luxury Lodges Laugharne and Milkwood Spa. The resort will be the first resort of its kind in the region, welcoming guests following an investment of £30 million plus. We’re really looking forward to visiting. In the meantime, if you’d like to know more about Luxury Lodges, take a look at their gorgeous website at www.luxurylodges.co.uk 85

Whether your house is already on the market or you’re getting ready to sell, there can seem like a lot to navigate. At Masons Self Storage, they have a lot of customers using their state-of-the-art self-storage as a short-term solution whilst getting their properties ready to sell, so we asked the experts for their top tips for getting your house ready for sale.
HOME SALE STRATEGIES
7 TOP TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR HOUSE READY TO SELL! 1. First impressions count!
It can be tempting to spend all your time and efforts inside the house when getting ready to sell, but rampingup your kerb appeal by giving your front garden or driveway a bit of extra love can really create the perfect first impression!
2. Check your flow
Take a tour of your house as if you’re seeing it for the first time. Walk through the house and notice what draws your eye. Is there any bulky furniture that you need to navigate? Or wonky kitchen cabinets that stand out? Make sure the way your home is laid out takes prospective buyers on a journey without interruptions or awkward eyesores. From this, make a list of the little fixes that need doing - from replacing bulbs to touching up the paintwork it all helps!
3. Does it bring you joy?
We’re big fans of Marie Kondo at Vale Life and the team at Masons Self Storage are too!
Marie Kondo’s whole philosophy is about reducing the amount of ‘stuff ’ you own that can make your life feel cluttered and overcomplicated – and, instead, reducing your stuff to only the things that bring you joy. Organise everything into piles: to keep, to donate, to sell, and if you can’t bear to part with it, but don’t need it right now, create a fourth pile to put into storage.
4. Have a spring clean
Cleanliness, as the old saying goes, is next to Godliness. When selling your home, you’re trying to make a perfect and lasting impression on potential buyers, so before any viewings take place, deep clean your home. Don’t forget to dust the lampshades, skirting boards and mantlepiece!
5. Ditch the bulky stuff
When selling your home, you’re trying to show off its assets and demonstrate how much space it has to offer. When you have big, bulky items of furniture, it can make the room seem smaller than it is. 96
Put bulky bits of furniture, bikes and any other large bits and pieces you have into storage to ensure you’re offering the best view of your home’s best features!
6. Good quality packaging
Good quality packaging materials are a must. The last thing you want on moving day is for one of your boxes to collapse or get damaged in transit! If you need packaging materials, take a look at the Masons Self Storage Packaging Shop, either online (www. masonsselfstorage.co.uk/packagingsupplies) or pop in and have a chat with the team. They have a huge range of moving boxes, tape and bubble wrap; plus, they can organise delivery right to your door, depending on where you live!
“Demonstrate how much space it has to offer.”
7. Use a reputable removals company
Even if you only have a small amount of possessions or aren’t moving that far, it’s always worth hiring a professional removals company. There is an art to packing fragile items so that they’re properly protected and don’t get broken in the move. Masons sister company, Masons Moving Group, are a Which? Trusted Trader and a British Association of Removers (BAR) Member, which means you can be sure that you’re choosing a professional company that are dedicated to promoting professional excellence in the removals industry. Spring and summer are relatively easy months in gardening terms it’s the autumn and winter where the real graft is done. Lisa and Gary of the Dutch Garden Centre say, with autumn and winter approaching, it’s all about being bold and brave.
DUTCH COURAGE
The first thing that greets you when you visit the Dutch Garden Centre, a stone’s throw from Junction 30 of the M4 is how friendly and helpful they are. I know nothing about gardening other than planting a few summer geraniums and herbs. Here, no-one minds, they couldn’t be more helpful. So, when I rock up and ask “what do I do now it’s autumn?”, the tips come flowing thick and fast. Seriously, I made some notes so you don’t have to. Light bulb moments! Yes, it’s that time when you want to start thinking about planting bulbs. People seem daunted by them but, honestly, they’re a doddle. Daffs are the Welsh favourite here and they’re easy. They have an excellent selection of bulbs and plenty of ‘how to’ advice. You’ll never be afraid again…
We want a shrubbery! Remember the Old Monty Python line? Again, simple - plenty to choose from at Dutch Garden Centre. Shrubs will last a long time and you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck. Also, they hide a multitude of sins and generally look great all year ‘round. Hedge your bets! For low risk planting that’s guaranteed to be a winner, hedging could be the trick up your sleeve this autumn and winter. It can be ornamental, decorative and, with taller hedging, brilliant for privacy. Talk trees! Autumn is definitely the time of year to be planting trees. Whether it’s a lovely ornamental acer or, perhaps, you’d like to save on your supermarket fruit bill. 98
Fruit trees can be brilliant for the garden and your pocket, and they’re a great way of getting children engaged with the garden and healthy eating. Basket case. Make your own or by them here… Dutch Garden Centre have everything you need to put together beautiful winter hanging baskets. And if you’re too busy, or really can’t be asked (my bad?), then you’ll have plenty of readymade baskets to choose from at really affordable prices. Log on to DGC! With the increasing popularity of wood-burners and multi-fuel stoves, you’ll be delighted to know there’ll be a super warm welcome when you buy your seasoned logs from Dutch Garden Centre. And, you can rest easy, they’re sustainably felled and reasonably priced.
Talk about logging on, don’t forget to visit them online and on Facebook. Go a little potty! Don’t stop at winter baskets. Pots can add a huge swathe of colour to a drab autumn and winter garden. Packed full of winter bedding, these cost-effective pick-me-ups are a brilliant addition. Dutch Garden centre have an excellent selection of frost resistant pots available with some gorgeous glazes so Mr Frost won’t have you cracking up. And, they’re made in the Rhondda! How cool is that? Christmas is coming! We all love a tree at Christmas, and nothing could be better than a beautiful, real Christmas tree. I can see it now. And, these trees don’t shed their needles either (well, maybe a little) but then it wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of needle!
Let’s try not to fall out this year. You shouldn’t, the prices are very reasonable and, once you’ve chosen yours, it’ll be netted ready for collection. If you’re a garden lightweight like me, this is the place for you. Everything you need at very reasonable prices and the very best advice from people who absolutely love gardening, and love helping even more.
“Dutch Garden Centre have everything you need to put together beautiful winter hanging baskets.” 99

At Magenta we always encourage our clients to talk to their parents or their children about money and especially about what will happen about Inheritance Tax when someone dies.
INHERITANCE TAX
& TALKING ABOUT YOUR INHERITANCE
Families could be paying an avoidable tax bill of more than £80,000 because parents are too embarrassed to talk to their children about their financial future. No one likes to talk about dying, but proper advance planning could save up to 40% on death duties. Instead, parents are reluctant to talk about it and leave their children unprepared and potentially storing up future problems for themselves. Not only could families be paying too much Inheritance Tax, they are also at risk of family disputes over inheritances. Research indicates that in 2017/18 taxpayers paid a total of £5.2 bn in Inheritance Tax; up to £2bn of this (40%) could have been saved with the right advice, which amounts to around £81,600 per estate eligible for IHT. It’s important that families talk about inheritance so they can plan ahead.
Not only will everyone be clear on what to expect, which can prevent family conflict further down the line, but it means as much of your hardearned money as possible is passed on to loved ones. With the proper planning, the impact of inheritance tax can be minimised by taking advantage of legitimate exemptions. Importantly, the longer you leave it, the fewer options you have, as many tax saving strategies have to play out over time. Children assume that their parents have made provisions and have received advice, but more often than not, this is not the case. Inheritance tax planning for clients in their 80s is a lot more challenging than in their 60s! Interestingly 19% of children think their parents don’t have a will; in reality, 44% don’t. The most common reason for not discussing inheritance is because the subject is awkward, but try to think of it 107
as the grown-up version of the birds and bees talk. It’s going to be difficult, but it can save a lot of heartache later on. The reality is a reluctance to discuss money issues within the family comes at a heavy price. Money will leave the family and line the pockets of the taxman. At Magenta we are experts at dealing with families – their different ambitions for the future, the conflicts and the dramas – we can provide a “helicopter view” of the whole situation and make sound recommendations for everyone to thrive. “We love giving back. Whether it’s with clients or with charity, we love sharing success. Yet, every now and then, it’s nice to get something back. Something that shows we’re making a difference, and we have! In front of 3,500 delegates, Lewis Ballard Accountants won the national ‘100% Xero Award’ at Xerocon 2018 in the Excel London.” Janet Ballard
100% X ERO AWARD It was unbelievable to be recognised as national Xero’s champions, out of so many innovative UK firms!
Bigger firms are using Xero, the world’s greatest cloud accounting software, but we’re using it to its fullest. We use it for all our client accounts and to run our practice work flow. We even had a Christmas Tree with Xero decorations on it! Xero is a dominant gene in the DNA of Lewis Ballard. Why is Xero cloud accounting so important? We live in both a digital age and an age of convenience. Xero is arguably the most innovative platform for businesses and individuals to keep on top of their finances. No wonder we love it so much. It makes your life easier and your business stronger. Big claims we know, but it’s true!
“Thrive in the face of digital change.” 108
With our streamlined process, using Xero and its partner apps, you can access your records on the go, anywhere, and on any device. You have real-time, up-to-date information at your fingertips, so we can help you make timely decisions. You’ll find yourself pouncing on opportunities and dodging disasters that your competitors are blissfully unaware of. We’re Building Brilliant Businesses that prosper whatever challenges arise. Neil Ballard says, in relation to the award and the industry as a whole, “Old school, paper-based accountancy firms are just going to disappear.
This award shows we’re not that kind of firm - we’re the firm moving ahead of rapid changes within the industry. Firms that drag their heels, that only make change when forced to, will find that it’s already too late.
Meanwhile, we’re already operating at a digital friendly capacity and our clients won’t struggle as Making Tax Digital happens. We have provided them with the tools to not only survive, but thrive in the face of digital change.”
But, before this, on 23rd March at 7.30pm at Holland House, we’re holding our 10th Annual Charity Dinner for Velindre Cancer Hospital and really hoping to boost the £125,107.90 we’ve already raised for this amazing charity.
However, with the champagne bottles barely dusty, Lewis Ballard are still looking to the future. Ever keen to help businesses succeed, we recognise that up-to-date is only the starting point. We’re currently launching our forecasting tool 4sight as part of our standard service. Your own digital crystal ball, it seamlessly integrates with your figures in Xero. Not only predicting the future, it shows how to change it too.

Sport is changing, and sport is challenging. Whether you’re competing, managing, or just one of the tens of thousands of support staff or volunteers out there across Wales involved in a wide variety of sports, the fact is sport is risky - accidents happen and incidents occur, that’s life.
R ISKY BUSINESS
SPORT IN WALES Watkin Davies has been at the heart of Welsh sport for over forty years so understands the many risks involved. The company recently teamed up with the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) to provide insurance and risk management advice to its members. We talked to Watkin Davies’ Sales & Development Director, Daniel Abbott, to find out more about this complex, risky world of sports insurance. Why is it important for Watkin Davies to be affiliated with Welsh sport? Watkin Davies are a Welsh independent insurance brokers. We have been established for over forty years and supporting Welsh businesses has always been at the heart of what we do. Grassroots sport plays a huge part in the development of sport in Wales and includes those at the top of their game such as Geraint Thomas, who started at a cycling club in Maindy. You need a healthy growth of sporting grass roots if champions are to be made, or simply supported, and provide the opportunity for youngsters to stay healthy and have fun. A lot of the time these local clubs are run by volunteers and parents and ensuring that they have the right level of insurance in place is where we come in, to protect the organisations and individuals within. What experience do you have in dealing with the specialist sector? Watkin Davies have been partners to the FAW Trust for the last three years and this is a hugely important partnership for us. We are able to support grass roots football throughout Wales and provide insurance coverage for the development centres at both Dragon Park, Newport and Colliers Park, Wrexham.
These facilities provide a huge opportunity for both coaches and youth looking to develop and have a chance to play in the National teams. In addition to working with the FAW Trust we have also been supporting the Welsh Sports Association since earlier this year and are working closely with them to provide insurance and risk management services to their members. What are you offering to Welsh sports in Wales? We are looking to support organisations and charities throughout Wales to provide them with any advice required with regards to their insurance needs. This can include working with an individual organisation, club or a national governing body for a sport, to carry out a review of any existing insurance coverages, comment on any areas which we feel they may wish to further consider and then conduct a thorough marketing exercise to compare pricing and cover, before then placing their insurance program into a suitable and specialist market. 110
This has also included arranging insurances for governing bodies who have perhaps been trading under a larger British governing body and are looking to branch out and have their own insurances as a Welsh national governing body in addition to this we have also supported both the Welsh Sports Association and Football Association of Wales by attending and presenting at seminars and providing greater insight into some of the risks faced by organisations and what solutions we as an insurance broker and risk manager can provide to them.
“ Ensuring that they have the right level of insurance.” What is your typical client base? Our clients could range from an individual coach providing coaching to one particular sport right the way up to a national governing body, all of its clubs throughout Wales, and all of its committee members, including its national team.
Do you have any bespoke offerings or are you in the process of developing anything further? As part of the FAW Trust’s Accredited Club scheme which is designed to raise standards in every junior club across the six area associations throughout Wales, Watkin Davies has worked closely with the Trust to develop an exclusive and bespoke Club Insurance offering to provide both superior coverage at the cost-effective price. The coverage is designed with the FAW in mind, and provides a number of specialised covers, such as damage to playing surfaces, floodlights, irrigation equipment, kits/balls and equipment, sightscreens and scoreboards and cups and trophies.
What services would you typically provide to an organisation or governing body requiring insurance? The range of risk management and insurance advice would vary depending on the type of client that we were dealing with; typically we would look to offer them a comprehensive suite of insurances to ensure adequate protection both of the individuals running the organisation and also for the organisation itself. This could range from the usual Public & Employers Liability which would include cover for volunteers as employees. Professional Liability providing cover against negligence from, advice, guidance, tuition and coaching through to management liability to provide cover for the individual committee members / trustees and the organisation itself. In addition to this we would also look to provide cover against damage to training grounds, club houses, offices, playing surfaces, grandstands and equipment.
We would also provide more specialist contingency insurances such as event insurance, cancellation and nonappearance, group personal accident and also travel insurance. In addition to placing insurances, what additional services will you provide to Welsh Sports? Insurance is constantly evolving and as part of our role in the support of sports throughout Wales, we are working closely with the FAW Trust and the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) including its trading on Vibrant Nation in order to support organisations, charities, clubs and national governing bodies to ensure that they have up-to-date knowledge both on any regulatory changes and also the types of insurances that can support them. We regularly look to issue circulars or blogs in conjunction with either the FAW Trust or the WSA to provide guidance and insight into key elements of risk management and regulation, such as GDPR, health and safety and various other matters. 111
We are very pleased to have officially launched this early this month and have already seen a number of enquiries coming in from clubs, some of whom have struggled to obtain either the correct level of insurance cover or required and alternative price due to the costs for this type of cover in the normal open market.
