THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN’S PREMIER LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

VALE L IFE Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Editorial & Videography Thomas Goodyear editorial@goodlifepublishing.co.uk www.valelifemag.co.uk 0845 180 2345 Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW Passionate about the Vale of Glamorgan We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelifemag.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright Vale Life 2015. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to Vale Life. Visit www.valelifemag.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing.

W ELCOME Spring reminds me of the late, great Ian Dury and the Blockheads song Reasons to be cheerful (1, 2, 3). I can think of many different reasons to be cheerful this spring but, like the late, great Mr Dury, there’s only room for three here. 1. We have finally said goodbye to the horrible cold weather and are enjoying warmer temperatures. 2. The spring/ summer fashion drops have now hit our Vale boutiques and we can stock up on those essentials (and maybe some not so essential items for our wardrobes). 3. We can start thinking about redecorating or remodelling our homes to make things look fresher and, well, more spring-like. We have split this issue up into more easily identifiable sections to, hopefully, make it easier to navigate. We’re always trying to mix things up to make the magazine more interesting and to stay ahead of the pack. Vale Life is growing in numbers and, hopefully, you’ve met either Chris or our latest recruit Alan. Alan and I are both here to help you promote your business with us. I’m still available as well but it’s nice to have a bit of help!

Alan should be around to see you over the coming months but if you’re keen to see him, you could always pip us to the post and email either one of us at our email addresses below (or join our 4,000 plus friends on Facebook and 10,000 plus followers on Twitter). We hope you enjoy this spring issue and look forward to seeing you over the spring and summer. Ty Hafan – Helping families in need since 1999 Tŷ Hafan has helped over 600 Welsh families to make the most of their precious time together. We are the leading charity in Wales dedicated to the care and support of children who are not expected to reach adulthood and their families. Not only does Tŷ Hafan provide specialist palliative care, but it also offers a much needed source of strength, support and short break care for the whole family – from mums and dads, to brothers, sisters and grandparents. Tŷ Hafan takes its support right into the family home and is there to help these families through every step of their unimaginable journey. Archie’s life was limited to just two and a half short years, but the mark he made at Tŷ Hafan will last forever. Archie stayed at Tŷ Hafan for just under a month. We did everything we could to make sure those final weeks were packed full of happy moments. We were by the family’s side when they wanted support and gave them space to be a family, when they needed to be alone together.

Whether he was having music therapy or sitting peacefully in our sensory room, he lit up the whole place with his smile. We said goodbye to Archie on Monday 25 March, but our support for Brad, Lauren and Jack didn’t stop there. To find out more, watch our video at www.tyhafan.org/leaveagift. Archie has left his mark on all of us at Tŷ Hafan in so many ways. You can also leave your mark right here in Wales. Once you’ve remembered your loved ones, please consider helping Tŷ Hafan with a gift in your Will. All our services are provided completely free of charge to families that need us, which is why your support is so important. One in five of the children we support is cared for thanks to gifts in Wills. Contact us for a free information pack www.tyhafan.org/leaveagift 029 2053 2265 legacy@tyhafan.org

If you’re looking for a piece of jewellery and are tired of looking at row upon row of cloned platinum rings, bracelets and earrings, perhaps it’s time to consider a piece of vintage or pre-loved jewellery.

A GOOD VINTAGE Cartier Santos Watch £2,650

18ct Gold Pocket Watch £5,500

Sometimes, when I’m looking at jewellery in most chain and high street jewellers, I must confess the displays, with their almost anaesthetic lighting leave me cold. These days, I’m finding myself drawn more and more to the vintage and retro pieces. They just seem to have so much more character. The second reason this attracts me is you simply get more for your money. I suppose it’s like a quality car - a top of the range Mercedes or BMW for example. When you buy a new car, it will depreciate dramatically in the first several years of ownership so, it makes sense to wait a while and buy one four, five or even ten years later. It’s just good economics and what the smart buyers do. David Edwards Jewellers nestles in the Royal Arcade and is family-owned and very well established. They have a superb and extensive collection of preowned jewellery, watches and gifts and, if you’ll excuse the pun, you can find some real gems here. From beautiful gold pocket watches to stunning large carat diamond rings, pendants, necklaces and brooches, David Edwards Jewellers has something for the more discerning buyer.

They also buy good quality jewellery and watches so, if you’re looking to trade up, this might be something to consider. Owner, Jack Cohen says, “We have lots of loyal customers who come to us year after year. It’s not uncommon for clients to bring in a diamond ring they purchased from us several years ago and leave with a larger carat ring or something entirely different.” David Edwards Jewellers also provide valuations for insurance purposes so if you have a fine piece of jewellery that you don’t have insured, you really ought to get it valued - for peace of mind. Jack and his trusted team are extremely helpful and can give you all the advice you need. 12

A Cardiff based, family-owned independent retailer specialising in fine footwear has been recognised by the British Footwear Association at its annual Footwear Industry Awards.

RISING STAR

Chris Macnamara

The Brogue Trader, owned and managed by father and son team, Chris and Keiron Macnamara, has been awarded New Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year for 2015.

We’re very proud of this recognition and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the other winners of their categories. It was a fabulous evening. The British Footwear Association put on a fantastic event.”

The Brogue Trader opened in Cardiff’s beautiful Morgan Arcade just over a year ago and has been widely recognised as offering superb levels of customer service. Owner Chris, delighted with the shop’s runaway success, said: “Ultimately, our customers are our biggest critics, but the Footwear Industry Awards are especially important because winners are voted for by members of the footwear trade. It is a completely independent endorsement, and recognition of the success of our business, by our peers.”

The Brogue Trader stocks some of the world’s finest footwear brands, and gentleman’s accessories, including Loake, Herring, Sebago, Joseph Cheaney and Oliver Sweeney. Chris also has plans to create a bespoke range of shoes under The Brogue Trader brand. Chris says: “Our first year has exceeded all our expectations, both financially and emotionally. I love shoes, I’m passionate about fine footwear and great service. I enjoyed a very successful sales career in the motor industry prior to opening The Brogue Trader which has been a dream come true. Winning New Independent Retailer of the Year 2015 has honestly been the icing on the cake, we’re so proud.”

As a keen motorcyclist, Chris was especially keen to attend the glittering gala dinner and awards ceremony as it was held at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham. Chris added: “The awards provide essential publicity for small independent footwear retailers like ourselves.

Chris is also passionate about rugby and The Brogue Trader proudly sponsors the Cardiff Blues and is Official Footwear Supplier to the Welsh Rugby Union. 14

Cardiff ’s gorgeous Morgan Arcade has a new independent retailer. Nestled neatly between the excellent Crumbs café and Hawkes, the gentleman’s outfitters, you’ll find Watches Of Wales which specialises in the buying and selling of the World’s very finest watch brands. Vale Life took time out with owner Paul Hornblow.

A BOUT TIME

Watches Of Wales opened its doors in Cardiff three weeks before Christmas but this trusted business has been trading for many years online so I was curious why Paul had decided to open in Morgan Arcade. “The opportunity arose and it seemed like a good idea,” said Paul. “We have a very successful online business. It just felt the right thing to do. To have a place where we can showcase our watches and jewellery. Cardiff is definitely the right place to be and with Hawkes and The Brogue Trader yards away I think we’ve added something special to Morgan Arcade.” Paul is keen to stress that Watches Of Wales doesn’t just sell watches. “Watches Of Wales core business is buying and selling high quality watches but we also buy and sell pre-owned jewellery, gold and silver,” he says. “We even buy silver cutlery!” Paul adds enthusiastically. Watches Of Wales also offers insurance valuations of watches and jewellery. Watches Of Wales customers are varied. “Through our website, we buy and sell to customers all over the world,” says Paul. “Locally, our customers are business people and ladies and gents that appreciate the brands we sell. Rolex is probably our most popular watch brand, and my personal favourite, but this is closely followed by Panerai, Omega, Breitling, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and TAG Heuer. We sell a lot to business people and also sportsmen and women. We sponsor the Cardiff Blues - many of the Blues players and Welsh rugby team are customers.” The shop feels very much like a gentleman’s club when you walk in. It feels quality with beautifully arranged rows of beautiful jewellery and desirable ladies and gents watches.

“We want our customers to feel welcome when they visit us - to feel special. They’re buying high quality products so our presentation and service reflects this. More than that though, we want customers to feel relaxed. There’s no pressure, it’s ok to browse, we welcome that.” I ask Paul is this the right time to buy a pre-owned watch or piece of jewellery? “Any time is a good time,” he says. “The good quality brands never lose money. They seem to keep rising all the time. Obviously any investment is a risk but watches and jewellery are one of the few solid investments you can actually wear and enjoy every day. Cars drop in value the minute you leave the showroom. A vintage Rolex can only go up in value.” One of the things Watches Of Wales has done to make purchasing one of these beautiful timepieces easier is to offer several ways to pay. 16

“We can accept payment by bacs or most of the major credit cards. We’ve also put a finance package in place (subject to status). Whether you buy here in the shop, or through our website, you will have the option of financing your purchase. The application usually takes under ten minutes and is completely safe and secure.” There’s no doubt about it, pre-owned jewellery and watches are becoming more popular with affluent and discerning customers not only because they look stylish but also because they are an excellent investment. Paul’s investment in Morgan Arcade seems to be paying off. “We’ve had a great start to 2015,” Paul says. “Customers’ love the shop and, most importantly, are buying from us and selling to us - I hope the shop will be as successful as our website. We have decades of experience, time will tell.”

“If anyone is looking to sell any watches or jewellery please get in touch. We are always looking to buy.”

As a former Welsh rugby player and now business entrepreneur, Alix Popham is used to making an impression with the way he dresses.

Owner of Hawkes, Russell Scott-Lawson

SUITED & BOOTED What do you enjoy about shopping at Hawkes? I like the fact that the clothes there are one-offs. You won’t see other guys around Cardiff in the same thing. Many of the boys shop there. Rugby players do tend to have larger than average thighs and Russell, being a trained tailor, can accommodate this very well and knows which styles will suit. I like the variety of clothing and accessories. I also like the dressing area downstairs – it’s a very special experience trying things on. The prices aren’t too expensive but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for which, in this case, is great quality and excellent customer service.

So where does style-conscious Alix like to shop? Vale Life caught up with Alix at his favourite gentlemen’s outfitters, Hawkes, in Cardiff ’s equally stylish Morgan Arcade. Tell us about your rugby career? I was a flanker and was captain for the 2009 season at Brive in the French Top 14, having signed from the Llanelli Scarlets in 2008. I also also played for Wales, earning 33 caps. Before moving up to the full Welsh squad, I captained the Wales Under-21 team and played for Wales ‘A’. I moved from Leeds Tykes to the Scarlets in the summer of 2005. During my time at Leeds I helped them win the 2004–05 Powergen Cup, the final of which I started. I made my international debut for Wales in June 2003 against Australia. I was also capped another three times before being included in Wales’ 2003 Rugby World Cup squad. I played two matches during the tournament. The following season I played in the 2004 Six Nations Championship, as well as being capped against South Africa in June, and against Japan in November. I played two internationals in 2005, and was capped five times in 2006, in the Six Nations, and against Romania in June.

What were you best known for on the field? Probably my block-busting tackles which included a tackle on Joe Maddock in a Powergen Cup semi-final against Bath in the 2005–06 season. The centre broke through the Llanelli line, and I knocked him side-on, knocking the ball out of Maddock’s hands in the process. In my next appearance, London Wasps flanker Johnny O’Connor was knocked out after he ran into my chest. What do you do now that you have retired from the game? I had to retire from the game through injury and now I am a business entrepreneur. How important is image to you? Having had a successful career in rugby, it is important that I look good and create a professional impression when out and about, especially at the various events that I attend. How long have you been shopping at Hawkes? Russell’s been looking after me for about eight years now. What do you buy there? Sometimes I go for a full, top-to-toe outfit for an event or sometimes I might just fancy a new shirt. 20

Just when you think a boutique can’t get any better, they go and surprise you by upping the fashion ante and shine that little bit brighter. That’s exactly what’s happened at Bryl’s Boutique on High Street in Barry.

BRYL’S Owner Ann Bryl is delighted that daughter Lousha is joining her in growing the family business. Renowned for its quality brands and impeccable customer service, Bryl’s offers some of the world’s best brands to the discerning female fashionistas of the Vale. Customers who visit Bryl’s for their injection of quality core brands such as Ted Baker, French Connection, Great Plains, Sandwich, Masai, Darling, Ugg Australia and Fit flop can still get their fix but with Lousha’s added input, an injection of new brands will appeal to all ages and all purses. So what new brands can customers expect? “We have a lovely new range by Yaya, which is casual, uncomplicated, excellent quality clothing with a feminine twist. We’ve also really expanded our accessories offering, with a gorgeous new range of Ted Baker watches and jewellery, which are absolutely stunning”. “We’ve also sourced a new line of jewellery by Estella Bartlett which is

already being snapped up because of design and price.” says Ann. “That and a brand new range of Italian designer handbags which are super stylish and so well made, yet retail at between £39 to £59. We are really excited about those too!” Many of us who already visit the boutique will know that before joining Ann at Bryl’s, Lousha was working as a successful employment lawyer at Hugh James Solicitors, so the question is why the change in career? “As much as I loved my job working at Hugh James, my real passion is fashion. I absolutely love it! I’m also a people person and when I’m in the shop, helping style customers, I’m in my element. I guess it’s in the blood! While talking to Ann and Lousha, their passion for Bryl’s shines through, especially when they talk about sourcing new brands, in particular their new brand for occasion wear.“Lousha got married last year and at that time the lack of stylish but affordable occasion wear was something that I was really aware of. 22

We feel that our new occasion wear brand really has it covered. The quality, cut and style is amazing and so are the price tags.” Bryl’s is a real family affair. Ann’s elder daughter Natasha also works at the shop when time permits and is heavily involved in all the buying. So if you want to sparkle this spring or step out in style this summer, you’ll know where to go. Bryl’s is brilliant!

Goose Island, Cowbridge is a godsend for women who like to shop for their work to weekend wardrobe and with accessories galore, it’s no wonder that this shop is a mecca for women of all ages and sizes and, so we hear, the odd movie star.

GOOSE ISLAND

Owner Karen Hutchings is excited about her new season’s stock. As well she should be. The rails look suitably spring-like with an array of pretty pastel colours. Every wardrobe needs a bit of layering and the layered tunics with matching scarves do the job perfectly. Or you could try the lovely selection of linen dresses, tops, jackets and trousers, which all come in a choice of five different colours.

Those who regularly shop at Goose Island will know that Karen is a keen traveller and regularly visits the streets of Florence to the bazaars of India looking for individual items for the shop. The team includes Karen and her retail staff from her three shops and they avidly scour fashion magazines and create mood boards for each season. Karen values her staff ’s creative input and ideas as she knows they deal with customers daily and know exactly what they want to see in the shop. This family run business considers their staff as an extension of the family and, as such, they go the extra mile to ensure their customers have a fabulous shopping experience with great customer service.

“ The brand is so strong that customers travel far and wide.”

So sought after is the brand that they are also a wholesale company which has over 400 stockists throughout the UK and Europe selling Goose Island clothing.

So what can we expect to find here? Think beautiful Italian style ladies clothing but without the high price tags. There’s also a huge selection of jewellery and accessories. Ladies of all ages and sizes shop here.

24

The brand is so strong that customers travel far and wide to buy what Karen has sourced from all over the globe. What’s going to be popular this spring at Goose Island? Well, no doubt it will be the big selection of easy to wear tops and tunics, which fit all sizes. The floaty chiffons with lace in their vintage collection and the lightweight knits are sure to be a big hit too – as they always are. And who shops here? Well, you’re sure to see familiar faces from the Cowbridge, the Vale and Cardiff and further afield and even customers from overseas. You might even spot Dame Judy Dench and Anthony Hopkins and his wife. You don’t have to be an A-Lister to shop here but you will be treated like one!

“Our first year has been fantastic. We have been completely overwhelmed by the response. We are so grateful for all the support from our customers who have become friends, returning regularly for a chat and, inevitably end up leaving with another must have,” says owner Sally Evans.

Sally Evans, Owner Boutique Box

BOUTIQUE BOX “Our customers are generally from surrounding areas, however, our radius is expanding. We are seeing new customers from Cardiff, Newport, Tenby and even Llandeilo.”

“Our new season styles are already flying out. The vibrant colours and new cuts are so sassy and feminine. Daisy May, Ella Boo and FeeG are firm favourites, however I am constantly looking for new designers. Our current new find is from Aberdare - Abigail Love has launched a new brand called Rain and we are the only stockist in Wales. It may have only been open a short time but this stunning boutique hotel in the heart of Penarth is certainly winning over many hearts. Whether it’s a stay in one of its stunning rooms, a spot of lunch or dinner or a spa visit, there’s something for everyone. We chat to Charlotte Watkins, Public Relations Manager at the hotel to find out more.

HOLM HOUSE Who is the hotel open to? The hotel is open to residents and non-residents. During the week our rooms are very busy as we have lots of business people to stay along with couples who enjoy a mid-week hotel and spa break.

A large proportion of our weekend restaurant bookings are from Penarth locals who enjoy dinner, Sunday lunch, afternoon tea and drinks at Holm House. Our Sunday Lunch is very popular and great value at three courses for £22.50; it’s often booked two to three weeks in advance! The spa is the perfect place to spoil yourself, we offer a wide range of individual treatments along with spa day packages, we also offer a personal training service in our mini gym. How many rooms does the hotel have? With twelve gorgeous and unique bedrooms, you’ll be sure to find your perfect room at Holm House Hotel. Awash with coastal charm, the rooms have been decorated individually, from cosy doubles to suites with living areas and a number of the rooms have unique feature bathtubs. Many of the rooms overlook the Holm House Hotel garden and the beautiful views of Steepholm, Flatholm, the Bristol Channel and the Devonshire coastline. All rooms are complete with high definition LED TV, music docking system, complimentary WiFi, plus fabulous amenities. Where are your clients coming from for the restaurant and the hotel? Our guests are a combination of locals and people from further afield. We have a number of locals who are regular guests of ours, who spend their evenings and weekends enjoying a cocktail at our bar and dining with us in the restaurant. Our Spa is attracting groups of ladies who enjoy our spa packages; signature treatments with a light lunch or afternoon tea.

We are the only spa in Wales that uses luxury spa brand, La Sultane de Saba, for treatments and we also retail some products. Our spa treatments explore bespoke journeys across the seas and beyond, to ensure total tranquillity and rejuvenation. Holm House spa includes treatments rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, with a tidal current machine and water feature, a steam room, private gym and elegant relaxation area with garden views and balcony. Our fine services also have a range of blissful hand and feet nail care and waxing services from our highly specialised therapists. Tell us about your chef? Our head chef is 28 year old James Milward who has been cooking since he was 18 years old. 46

James then progressed to work at various restaurants around the UK where he further developed his skills and love for cooking. James has been a head chef for the last few years and has returned to the South Wales area to take the head chef position with Holm House. Are your staff local? Yes. All of the staff at Holm House are local to the area, with many living in or very close to Penarth.

“Our Spa is attracting groups of ladies who enjoy our spa packages; signature treatments with a light lunch or afternoon tea.”

Where does chef buy his produce? Is the produce locally sourced? Is that important to him? James sources all of the produce from local suppliers who specialise in dealing with local and seasonal produce. The venison is from Brecon, fish from the Gower and fruit and vegetables all from within a 50 mile radius. Are you open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner? Holm House is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We recently launched a lunch and early evening menu which is 2 courses for £16 which has proved very successful for those who enjoy a light meal. Our afternoon tea has proved very popular since we opened in November.

A selection of finger sandwiches, fruit scones with clotted cream, freshly baked cakes and mini desserts served with a pot of tea from our selection is priced at £16.50. We are due to open our gardens for afternoon tea this spring (date dependant on weather). We also have a monthly wine club which is the first Sunday of each month. The evening begins at around 6pm and a wine specialist will take the guests through a number of wines, usually three red and three white. Nibbles are provided and include various breads, olives, cheeses and meats. Tickets are priced between £20 and £25 dependent on the theme of the evening and often sell out weeks in advance. 47

If you would like to find out more about the monthly wine club and upcoming events, please contact our reception. Being a hotel, the perception could be that the offering is expensive, is this the case? This isn’t the case at all, at Holm House; we offer quality food, quality spa treatments and hotel breaks which are all reasonably priced. Our A La Carte starters are from £6.50, main courses from £17.50 and desserts from £6.95. We also offer a lunch and early evening menu which comprises of two courses for £16 and our Sunday Lunch is two courses for £19 or three courses for £22.50. Continued overleaf...

Would you say Holm House was a special occasion venue only? Holm House is the ideal venue for special occasions, whether it is a birthday or anniversary, however Holm House is also the perfect place for meeting friends over coffee or a cocktail, a light lunch or afternoon tea. We sell gift vouchers which make a wonderful gift, as these can be redeemed against rooms, the restaurant or spa. The Holm House Spa has a wide selection of treatments and offers monthly and seasonal special offers and packages. What are the most requested dishes? The sirloin steak is the most popular dish on the menu. It is a fantastic steak from Mr Mawrs’ farm which is just outside of Usk. We serve it with onion textures; it’s a fun play with steak and onion. For those who have a sweet tooth, the plum lardy cake with clotted cream ice cream is a real winner! Are you taking bookings for weddings/events? Yes we are taking bookings for weddings and events such as charity dinners. The Hotel is an elegant yet relaxed setting, complete with breathtaking views across the Bristol Channel, making Holm House a perfect choice for wedding or special event. Our aim is to create bespoke events for our guests and provide them with the attention to detail they may not find at a chain hotel. What has the feedback been so far to the restaurant and the hotel in general? The feedback for both the hotel and restaurant has been outstanding! Both Trip Advisor and Facebook are great ways for us to hear about our guest’s experience with us.

After the completion of the Penarth Pier Pavilion and opening of James Sommerin’s restaurant, the esplanade was missing one final piece to complete the picture postcard.

SHORE THING

“ Shore is beautifully laid out with a strong coastal theme.” It’s almost a tradition that every beach front has a really good gift shop. So when the Penarth Pavilion management team moved out of Windsor Court opposite the pier, we hoped that a really good something would open there. We just weren’t sure what. We’d heard on the grapevine that Andy Bradshaw and Peter Knowles, the owners of Hamptons on Ludlow Lane, had a vison for the blank canvas and, several months later, the appropriately named Shore has opened.

“ Shore is a real feast for the eyes: everywhere you turn there’s something cute or clever. I loved the little tinplate crabs, pebbles and white starfish.” 52

If you know Hamptons, you’ll know Andy and Peter have a keen eye for what looks good (being interior and garden designers themselves), so you’d expect the range of products Shore sells to be very pleasing on the eye, and they are. When visiting shops around our country’s coasts, one of the things I hate is the lack of quality and general tat that’s on offer. Not so at Shore. Shore is beautifully laid out with a strong coastal theme. Stunning fused glass rubs shoulders with wicker chairs, tactile fabrics and eye catching creations. The colours are simply gorgeous: from the bright bands of red and white on the lovely lighthouses to the cool blues of the throws, model boats and prints. Every product bounces off the shelves and the bleached floor anchors the whole interior beautifully.

Shore is a real feast for the eyes: everywhere you turn there’s something cute or clever. I loved the little tinplate crabs, pebbles and white starfish. A lighthouse lamp catches my eye and there are plenty of quality candles to choose from (a real weakness of mine). I really love the fact that there are Penarth inspired photographs and artwork on display. Who doesn’t love local? And when it’s presented as well as this, it’s a real treat to browse. We like Shore. I’d go as far as to say we love Shore. Not just because it’s a great interiors and gift shop but also because it’s the last piece of the Esplanade puzzle and, it fits right in. You must go. Life really is better at the beach.

“Life is better at the beach.”

With so many kitchen companies around, how do you know which one to choose? The answer is simple; you choose the one that has great feedback from a discerning customer who knows great quality when she sees it. Vale Life chats to Karen Harding of Sully in her brand new, gorgeous kitchen from …

VMW K ITCHENS

Why a new kitchen? We are in the process of having the whole house remodelled so a new kitchen was paramount to the planning process. How did you hear about VMW Kitchens? Our builders recommended we talk to James Viggers of VMW as they were impressed with his kitchens and designs. What did you think of James when you meet him? I was instantly impressed. You can tell a lot from first impressions and, within ten minutes of meeting James, he understood my vision and I knew we’d be in safe hands. What was your vision? I had been tasked with redesigning the whole house and I like to think I have a good eye when it comes to design. We travel a lot; especially to Dubai where the hotels are modern and impeccably designed so I get a lot of design inspiration from them and from the magazines that I read. I was impressed with the range of kitchens at the VMW showroom, especially when I saw the same tiles that I had been admiring on the walls.

What do you particularly love about your kitchen? It matches my vision perfectly. I love the touch control and the effortless mechanics of the drawers and cupboards. The quality is exceptional. What difference has the kitchen made to your family’s lifestyle? It’s changed the way we live. Before, the children used to spend their time in their bedrooms but now we all congregate in the kitchen. It’s a real party house. We love to cook and entertain. The lighting attracts a lot of attention from passers-by who ask to see the finished product. Our house is ‘the talk of Sully’ which we find entertaining (but a fact that we’re also secretly proud of).

Would you recommend VMW to your friends? Absolutely. The whole project was seamless. Nothing was too much trouble. You can imagine the stress that comes with remodelling a whole house but working with James made the experience completely stress free.

If you wished your kitchen was ‘the heart of the home’, rather than a place where you boil the kettle, then it’s worth you taking a trip to Topstak to look at their Neptune range of quality kitchens. We chat to Topstak Director Christian Pedersen to find out more.

Christian Brookfield, Kitchen Designer

HEART OF THE HOME

Anyone who has been to Topstak will know that we aim to offer exceptionally high quality products at affordable prices. This goes for our stoves, furniture, accessories and our kitchens. My wife, and co-director, Lynda and I researched kitchen manufacturers at great length and, when we discovered Neptune, we knew they were the brand for us and our customers. Neptune has a proud heritage and is committed to using the very best raw materials, designers and craftsmen to produce their kitchens. What style of kitchens do you offer? We like to think that we can offer a kitchen to suit everyone’s taste and budget. We also supply our own bespoke Eric Christian kitchens that are made using traditional materials and expertise.

The Chichester is the original Neptune kitchen which is hand painted in a limestone finish. These beautifully designed solid cabinets are hand built using traditional joinery and incorporate in-frame cabinets with fully extending drawers on soft close runners. It is available with matching tables, chairs and dressers that are hand painted to suit almost any taste or décor. The high quality and competitively priced paint is also sold separately. The Henley kitchen has a more contemporary edge which is derived from classically styled antiques. Made from solid oak, the Henley kitchen has a natural timber feel. Each cabinet is constructed using traditional joinery mortice and tenons and full dove tails – remarkable attention to detail makes the Henley a firm favourite. 56

The more contemporary Suffolk, with a classic shaker style, not only looks stunning but also incorporates a full range of modern technologies including dimmed lighting with concealed glass shelves and magnetic close system. The exteriors of the Suffolk cabinets are hand finished in Dove Grey with interiors in Honed Slate along with solid oak for shelving and drawer boxes. The Suffolk enjoys the same quality of traditional joinery and state of the art soft close runners used in all Neptune kitchens. What bespoke kitchen can you provide? Our own range of “Eric Christian kitchens” is designed and handmade to suit almost any kitchen layout with a focus on being competitively priced. They feature a wide choice of styles and units including a really practical and eye catching larder unit.

All the doors and frames are made from solid wood and the carcasses are made from robust plywood for strength and durability. The units can be finished in any colour or shade of paint to suit customer’s requirements, and of course there is an almost limitless choice of handles. What about designing and fitting a kitchen? We can provide a complete service using specialist craftsmen who work to very high standards. Our Kitchen Designers Steve and Chris, work closely with every client to assess their needs. This usually involves a free visit to your home to discuss your lifestyle requirements and then draw up a design so you can see exactly how your kitchen will look. This is a start to make sure your requirements are satisfied, even if it means amending layouts. Nothing is too much trouble!

However, the first step is to visit our showroom to see our kitchen displays, which are a great way to get ideas. What else do you offer? As kitchens usually involve having new floors, we have a great choice of natural wood and stone flooring on display in our large showroom. We also display the wide range of Neptune tables and chairs; and there matching paints. We are also the main dealers for Esse range of cast iron cookers, which are available in many different colours and sizes. We sue their innovative EL 13amp model for cooking in our Gallery cafĂŠ and cook shop. Do you need an appointment to view the kitchens? Just give us a call on 01446 771567 to make an appointment or just call in and one of our team will be on hand to show you around. 57

Owner Dennis Maunder couldn’t be happier with how Cardiff Bedstore has been received by his customers. In just under two years, word has spread of the huge range of quality beds, mattresses and furniture and, just as importantly, the knowledge that Dennis has on what type of bed or mattress his clientele needs.

CARDIFF BED STORE “It’s not just the selection of beds and mattresses that we offer that’s bringing the customers in,” says Dennis. “It’s the fact that we offer singles, doubles, queens or king size in every price bracket.” “We don’t over inflate our prices. The ticket price is the ticket price.” he says. “The range of Highgrove, with their soft and hard pocket springs, as well as memory foam and micro-quilted coating are being very well received as are the orthopaedic mattresses. For those of you who might be tempted to blame your budget for

continuing to sleep on a less-than-ideal mattress, consider this - just a little bit more sleep can help you lose weight, improve your memory and help you live longer. Conversely, buying the wrong mattress or sleeping on one that’s too old, can be the cause of that painful crick in your neck or your persistent lower back pain,” says Dennis.

“ We don’t over inflate our prices. The ticket price is the ticket price.”

BUILT FOR STYLE & COMFORT When designing its deep-seated Kipling sofa, British manufacturer Couch had one thing in mind – comfort. That’s why they use a duvet of duck feathers around their seat cushions, thus making them so squidgy they’re guaranteed to turn anyone into an instant lounge lizard. Perfect for stretching out on, the Kipling range is available in 28 different fabric and colour combinations, such as velvet, linen and wool. Tom Ridgwell, Director of Couch, says: “Neutral sofas tend to be the most popular. To refresh for a new season why not accessorise with scatter cushions? Try a combination of greens and blues for a spring/ summer feel.” The Kipling is just one of the great sofas that make up Couch’s exclusive range. All their sofas are hand-made in South Wales and, because Couch cut out the middleman and only sell their sofas direct, you can save up to 50% off retail prices. Delivery is absolutely free throughout Wales and England, and all purchases come with a no-quibble money-back guarantee and 5 year frame warranty. With 28 years of professional experience and their exclusive partnership with leading German kitchen manufacturer nobilia, SMC Kitchens has the design capabilities, fitting experience and product range to create and fit a dream kitchen into whatever space you have. We chat to SMC Kitchen owner, Steve McCormick to find out more.

SMC K ITCHENS

Tell us why you chose to work with nobilia, Steve? Having worked in the kitchen design industry for a good many years, I’ve seen a lot of kitchens. I particularly liked the cutting edge design, clever storage features and the extensive range of inspiring, high quality, German engineered products of nobilia and that’s why I chose them to offer to our clients.

So handle-less is the way to go? You’ll often see kitchens branded as handle-less, but actually have a handle integrated at the top. A genuine handleless kitchen has several key features, which help to create that all important linear and uniform appearance. The beauty of a nobilia kitchen is that the custom designed carcass incorporates aluminium rails that run continuously for the full length of the kitchen design.

Is there a specific range that’s proving popular? Definitely, it’s one of their leading ranges - the handle-less Line N range. A leading feature of most modern designer kitchens is the use of straight lines to create the illusion of space. No matter what size kitchen space you have to work with, genuine handle-less kitchens provide a sleek modern look and the long, elegant straight lines will create the impression of depth, exuding a calming and chic environment.

Are there any other design additions? Yes, a stunning effect for the sophisticated handle-less fronts is an illuminated bar handle with LED technology. Prefabricated internal and external mitres keep the rail continuous throughout the kitchen design - a key feature for ensuring the long continuous lines in the style.

Also, all end panels are designed to suspend above the floor allowing the plinth to run continuously, creating a floating look to the island. This again creates the overall impression of more space in your kitchen. It is also a practical feature, as your feet will have somewhere to go whilst working at the island. Custom designed, end of run upright panels allow the handle-less rail to flow all the way through your specific kitchen space. This ensures that added impression of space is created in any design or kitchen shape. What about worktops? Nobilia’s ergonomic worktops with an angled edge, create a more open look and feel to the rail making it easy and comfortable to use. The worktops are available in quartz and granite.

“ SMC Kitchens can give you that unique look offered only by a true handle-less kitchen.” 60

“ We’re only 10 minutes off J34 of the M4.” And the units? Tall units of all sizes are available with vertical or horizontal rails, again ensuring that no matter what kitchen space you have, SMC Kitchens can give you that unique look offered only by a true handle-less kitchen. Where are you based? The purpose built showroom is both strategically and conveniently located in Hepworth Business Park, Coedcae Lane, Pontyclun. The location wasn’t chosen by accident. We wanted to offer stunning dream kitchens at the best possible price, and not being on the high street means that we can pass on the savings of big rents to our customers. We’re only 10 minutes off J34 of the M4 and have a doorstep car parking for convenience.

Spring is in the air, summer is on the horizon and for those of you thinking about improving your home and letting the outside in, could perhaps consider bi-fold doors as Catherine and Carl Singleton of Port Talbot did recently. We met up with them to find out more about their new doors, courtesy of Alexander James.

A ROOM WITH

What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They supplied and fitted four white aluminium bi-fold doors with tinted windows and integrated blinds in July 2014.

Why did you choose Alexander James to complete the work? We obtained two quotes and Alexander James were preferential on price, lead time and service. The sales men were very obliging. As we had never seen the bi-fold door concept previously, they were able to take us to their on-site workshop and show us a set of doors they were currently working on. Andy Farmer, the representative was able to answer any questions and queries that we had.

The time he spent with us to explain how the doors and blinds work gave us confidence in the product and service that they supplied. Plus they were able to offer tinted glass and blinds that sit within the glass, which is something we required.

How did you hear about the company? I found them by searching the internet and I followed this up with a phone call to ask them about their service and expertise. Were you pleased with the work Alexander James carried out for you? We were very pleased. They were able to liaise directly with the builder who was building the extension to confirm dimensions and delivery dates. 62

The estimated delivery date was six weeks, but they were able to supply and fit the doors within four weeks in line with building requirements. The fitters were friendly, polite and tidied up after themselves. The owner of the company, Alex Richards, came to the house to inspect the workmanship. There were a few minor issues, which we were unable to spot and he arranged for the fitters to come back and rectify the work. Where we live, we are exposed to the wind, the leading door sometimes catches the wind and it flies open hitting the brickwork. They were able to manufacture an ‘arm’ to stop the door flinging open which is of great benefit to us.

“ The fitters were friendly, polite and tidied up after themselves. The owner of the company, Alex Richards, came to the house to inspect the workmanship.

A VIEW How do you now use the space after the work has been carried out? The bi-fold doors were put onto a new single storey extension that has been built to extend the kitchen, diner and create a new living space. The doors brighten the room and allow us to have full benefit of the wonderful view we have from the back of the house. What difference has the work made to your lifestyle? We love our new extension and spend the majority of the time when we are in the house looking out through our new doors. We cannot wait until the summer for when we can open the doors fully and bring outside living into the house.

Alexander James Unit 3A Ashmount Business Park, Upper Forest Way, Swansea, Wales SA6 8QR

Would you recommend Alexander James to others? Yes, definitely. They were great to deal with, were in constant communication, were able to provide what we required and gave us alternative options which we did not originally think of. They have a wide selection of door types, with numerous options regarding colours, tints and blind colours. We were very satisfied with the work that they carried out.

VOG Fire & Security are quickly building a reputation as one of the market leaders in the Vale Of Glamorgan. We talked to owners Andrew Nash and Matthew Hobbs to find out more at their recently refurbished centre in Barry.

SAFE & SECURE

It’s been an exciting year for VOG Fire & Security. The security and alarm specialists have been busy building their brand across the Vale. “It’s been a great year!” says Andrew. “When we started, we thought we could bring quality systems to the marketplace and make them more affordable with cutting corners. The Vale of Glamorgan has over 130,000 residents so it’s a sizeable area but residents could be doing more to protect themselves.” VOG offers a comprehensive range of products and services. “Burglar alarms, CCTV and fire alarms are our core business,” says Matthew. “We also supply fire extinguishers and supply and fit access control systems.

At the heart of VOG’s philosophy is affordability and the company has strived to ensure their burglar alarms, CCTV and fire alarm systems are among the most affordable in the Vale of Glamorgan. “ We think a burglar and fire alarm is essential for any home. Particularly in the Vale where some of the homes are quite a distance from the major towns. A good burglar alarm can protect your property but a good fire alarm can save your life.” I ask about CCTV systems as it’s something that I’m considering. “The prices vary wildly but there are good systems that can be installed that won’t break the bank,” says Andrew.

“ VOG customers deserve the very best systems, products and service when they are investing in these types of systems and we pride ourselves on giving them the best.” 66

“The other thing that people need to consider these days is that more and more insurance companies are demanding that good systems be installed. Sometimes they insist these are monitored, sometimes not. Whatever system you ultimately choose, it has to be right for you and the area you live in. At VOG Fire & Security, we advise customers and give them a choice of systems based on their budget and requirement.” You may already have an existing Fire or burglar alarm system and that’s also an area VOG Fire & Security can assist in. “Some companies don’t want to get involved with existing systems,” says Matthew. “We’ll happily look at the system you have in place and, if we can work with it or improve it, we will. Having said that, the industry is moving on at pace and, every year, new technology is being developed that improves the systems and makes them more cost-effective.”

VOG works with home owners and business owners across the Vale. “We’ll protect customers right across the Vale Of Glamorgan. From Bridgend, Pyle, Ogmore and Porthcawl in the west to Culverhouse Cross, Penarth and Cardiff Bay in the east. We have customers in Cowbridge, Barry, Dinas Powys, Rhoose and Llantwit Major,” says Andrew. “We’re always looking for new business - domestic or commercial. We have a growing list of clients because we’re well respected and people trust our service.”

Pyle Garden Centre is an independent, family run garden centre that is located just off Junction 37 of the M4. Catering for all levels of gardening from new gardeners, right through to the professional landscape designers, they pride themselves on product quality, expert service and overall value for money. We find out why they are one of the leading, independent garden centres in South Wales.

P YLE GARDEN CENTRE

What specialities make you one of the leading garden centres in the area? We specialise in a vast range of plants that are all sourced from reputable, licensed growers found in the local area, throughout the UK and from international distributers. Our massive range of plants are available to suit all budgets and needs with a wide variety of branded products also found within the centre. From garden tools, essentials, outdoor living, care, maintenance and giftware for the garden and home all available for purchase. There is a loyalty card scheme in place where customers receive 3p for every ÂŁ1 spent in-store, a worthwhile benefit indeed for those looking for a better shopping experience. Together with all of the gardening essentials there are numerous concessions within the grounds of the centre with specialist shops

showcasing kitchenware, women’s boutique clothing, home interiors, wedding services, gifts, conservatories, driveways, pets, food and more... Pyle Garden Centre is so much more than a garden centre! Any advice for gardeners looking to prepare their garden for the coming months? Steve, our Horticultural Manager, highly recommends purchasing a good selection of starter plants early in the season, this is a cost effective way of exhibiting a wide variety of plants and colour in both your Spring and Summer gardens. There are a huge variety of plug and starter plants in store today and buying them early is a great money saving tip! If you would like more hands on information the staff at the centre have a great depth of knowledge regarding all aspects of gardening and can offer a vast amount of advice and information. 72

They are also all horticulturally trained to ensure that they are the very best in their field of work. Every member of staff is more than happy to help. BBC Radio 2’s Terry Walton is also a great supporter of Pyle Garden Centre and very kindly provides monthly gardening tips for customers via our website (www.thepylegardencentre. co.uk), in addition Terry carries out a variety of gardening demonstrations at the garden centre throughout the year so keep an eye out for the next big event. Why do you think customers come back to you? We are quite different from most garden centres. With the business being family owned we are able to provide a welcoming, rustic ambiance throughout the centre for all who visit. We find that customers return again and again as a result of the caring staff, first class facilities and high quality products.

The staff are highly knowledgeable and approachable, we enjoy creating inspirational concepts and displays throughout the store; which then enables the customer to share in our gardening, outdoor and home visions. It’s no longer a quick trip to a garden centre, we now provide a full day out for the whole family. We are very lucky to have The Olive Tree Restaurant situated in the grounds, this quirky restaurant/cafe emulates the welcoming, rustic feel that is found throughout the centre and has grown from strength to strength over the last twelve months, so much so that it has evolved into a firm favourite lunch destination for the majority of our customers. The Olive Tree is a truly unique location to enjoy a hearty breakfast, a quick snack, a delicious lunch or an afternoon tea delight.

What are your future plans? The future plan for Pyle Garden Centre is to grow, grow, grow! We have recently taken over the ownership of the pet shop, which has now become ‘Petstop’, there are a number of new concession stores joining us over the coming months as well as plans to improve and upgrade the building and facilities found on site. It truly is an exciting time for Pyle Garden Centre. So for the ultimate garden centre experience visit Pyle Garden Centre. We have everything you could possibly need, all in one place. We are more than just a garden centre, we have evolved into a thriving retail destination. Visit us today to see our huge range of garden furniture, a stunning selection of BBQ’s (including Kadaj Fire Bowls!) and a massive collection of plants bulbs and seeds. Look out for our new Spring/Summer stock, arriving in store soon! 73

50% of people, male and female, will experience thinning hair. It’s a common problem and a huge source of stress. When a number of clients at the popular Penarth hair salon Blu, raised the issue with the team, they quickly rose to the challenge of finding a product to combat this issue. Luckily the salon’s preferred brand Wella had the solution – Nioxin. Blu’s assistant stylist Alice Davies recently went on an in-depth course to find out more.

Alice Davies

BLU HAIR DESIGN

What causes thinning hair Alice? The truth about thinning hair is that it cannot be reversed, but with early detection, professional consultation, and advanced products and technologies, you can make the most of the hair you have. Without going into too much scientific detail, the cause is often genetic, and can also be triggered by certain life stages. Hair cells reproduce at a faster rate than any other in our bodies, so they are also sensitive to changes in our health or environment. Addressing thinning begins with understanding what causes and contributes to it, and the early warning signs to look out for. What can Blu offer to help? Applied to the hair and scalp, Nioxin products reduce hair breakage, delivers denser looking hair, amplifies hair texture, strengthens hair against cuticle damage, and cleanses excessive sebum from the scalp.

Does it work? Yes, clients have noticed denser, thicker looking hair in only four weeks.

“ Nioxin products reduce hair breakage, delivers denser looking hair, amplifies hair texture, strengthens hair against cuticle damage.” Are you glad that you can pass this knowledge onto your clients? Definitely. We’re lucky at Blu in that our Directors, Alexis and Hayley invest in us in terms of training and often send us on courses to improve not only our cutting, colouring and styling skills but issues such as this which can be upsetting and embarrassing for our clients. I learnt so much about hair and the science behind the products that we use in the salon on a daily basis, which I’m glad I can pass on to our clients.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

STRESS MANAGEMENT It is probably fair to say that the greatest threat to our health today, at least in the developed world, is having more stress that we are able to handle.

The increasing pace of lifestyles, the complexity of many professions, not to mention changes and added strains in relationships due to greater mobility and distance from family members, has placed considerable burdens on our stress-management systems. Nearly all natural therapies place great importance on stress as a probable factor in ill-health, and yet people need a certain amount of stress in order to become motivated and develop; so what is the problem? Our internal stress-coping mechanisms originally developed to cope with potentially life

Stress Anxiety

threatening situations, the so-called “fight or flight adaption. However, these biological changes are all too often brought into play by other factors these days, from meeting deadlines or work crises to receiving the latest bill. When the body is placed in an almost constant state of alert, the adrenal glands eventually become tired and people are depleted and panicky rather than stimulated and awake.

These problems have been recognised for a long time, and most natural therapies will offer some help with stress-related problems. Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Massage, Meditation and Yoga, are just some of treatments widely available to help us cope with our stress. A healthy diet, sufficient exercise and plenty of fluid are also of great importance.

I don’t know about you but whenever I’m feeling under the weather, I visit my local pharmacist for advice. I’m not talking about when I’m really ill but, for minor complaints, a trip to a pharmacist is my first port of call.

WASHINGTON PHARMACY

With ever increasing pressures and strains on NHS services there’s never been a stronger need for pharmacies to work with local doctor’s surgeries to deliver health care in the community. When you consider the medical training and knowledge that pharmacists have gained over many years this makes so much sense. So when I heard that Washington Pharmacy in Penarth had opened a travel clinic, I thought what a great idea and had to find out more. What can a travel clinic offer I hear you ask? Well, it can provide travel health advice, vaccinations, and medication for business trips, holidays and visiting friends and relations all over the world. Partnering with the largest network of private travel clinics in the UK (MASTA - Medical Advisory Service for Travellers Abroad) Washington Pharmacy are able to provide this independent private travel clinic. By logging onto the MASTA web site and entering your trip details, a travel heath brief can be created in just a few minutes which identifies recommended vaccinations and anti-malarials as well as any other protection you may need to consider.

In fact nothing could be simpler. Yes, there will be a charge. It is a private clinic after all, but you do have to pay for certain vaccinations on the NHS anyway, and the real benefit when we all lead such busy lives is that there are appointments at Washington Pharmacy all week and at the weekend, and even at short notice for those last minute trips.

This UK award winning independent pharmacy is situated in Stanwell Road in Penarth and offers a professional and friendly service to the community. So before you pick up your smart phone to dial your local doctor, pop Washington Pharmacy’s number in your contacts - it could be the smarter call in the long run.

While you’re at the pharmacy you could also stock up on travel necessities including their full range of sun creams, and their popular Vichy and La Roche Posay skin care ranges (all vital for protecting the skin against the ravages of the sun). There’s also a great range of cosmetics and toiletries including Crabtree & Evelyn, Roger and Gallet, Heyland & Whittle, Bronnley and Yardley. The Travel Clinic aside, Washington Pharmacy can also vaccinate against the painful skin disease Shingles, which affects up to one in four of us in our lifetime. Other private services include diabetes and cholesterol tests, blood pressure and skin condition diagnosis, all provided within their private consultation rooms. 85

Dailyspine Clinic A lot of people are surprised when they go through an episode of back pain or a health challenge, they say things like “I didn’t do anything” or “I don’t understand where it came from”.

After a consultation what they said is usually correct, the cause is because they didn’t do anything. People don’t get regular spine checks for a many reasons such as simply being too busy but just as a farmer is never too busy to tend to his crops, you should always make time for your health. Cyfoes Healthcare in Talbot Green is going from strength to strength. Now in its third year, the clinic has made some big changes and with The Well Being Centre Ltd now on board this has enabled clients to access both skin specialist treatments and clinical body work treatments.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

A HOLISTIC A PPROACH Andrea Evans owner of Cyfoes

Ms Rachel Wheeler and Mrs Louise Davies ‘The Well Being’ Centre Directors and Practitioners

Andrea says Cyfoes is evolving. With The Well Being Centre now permanently based here, it enables both men and women to access treatments for the whole body under one roof. How have things been since we last spoke? Very good. We’ve built up such a loyal client base from clients all over the Vale and beyond, through our exposure in Vale Life and the continued word of mouth. In addition, we now have The Well Being Centre on board, so we are able to offer our clients a range of reflexology, massage and aromatherapy treatments tailored to their physical and emotional needs. This is, of course, on top of the range of specialist skin care services on offer. What skin treatments does Cyfoes offer? We can help with a wide range of problems such as aging skin, acne, moles and excessive hair, all of which have a massive effect on people’s self-esteem.

“ Whilst it’s essentially a clinical and medical service that we provide, we would like Cyfoes to have a more holistic approach to health.”

We also offer enhanced aesthetic treatments including dermal fillers, facials, injectable muscle relaxants, FRX Co2 Laser rejuvenation & more.

The girls have successfully treated long term pain sufferers, helped ladies with fertility issues and successfully drain lymph oedema post cancer surgery.

What skincare ranges do you use? A lot of skin issues can be helped by a regular skincare regime. We have come to trust the Murad brand and product over the last three years. This is a range developed by a US dermatologist. I have seen his products work and my clients are not only happy with the results, but also the value for money.

We regularly run taster sessions so people can come along and see how our treatments can make such positive changes to their health and wellbeing.

How do the two businesses work together? I was lucky enough to meet Louise & Rachel last year. Being females in business, we had lots in common and we discussed how we could combine our services under one roof. Apart from being really skilled at what they do, they are also amazing people. I am delighted that we are now able to offer all their services at our clinic; we have had tremendous success in the introduction of sports massage, sub-fertility and maternity reflexology. 91

What else is coming on board in the future? Whilst we are essentially a clinical and medical service, we recognise that emotional wellbeing is paramount to health. With this in mind, we are now introducing clinic hypnotherapy sessions, counselling sessions for those touched by cancer and other illnesses. Spring in the garden is all about new beginnings, it’s a joy to see the garden wake up at the end of a long Winter and it’s the time when we prepare for the start of the main season.

SPRING THE SAVIOUR OF NATURE

Spring is the busiest time of year and the more you can do now before the weeds start growing the easier the garden becomes for the Summer. The list of jobs for the garden in Spring is endless so you need to plan your time and prioritise what things for you are the most important. Your border tidying should be nearly complete and now is the time to mulch with compost or well rotted manure around your shrubs and perennials, the more ground that is covered up by a mulch the less room there is to germinate. If you planted your garden with Spring in mind back in the Autumn then your bulbs will be giving you a display that makes us all feel that we haven’t been neglected and Spring is the saviour of nature. From the early flowerers like Snowdrops and Crocus’s through the hundreds of varieties of Daffodils and then onto the April flowering Tulips, if you have planned it right then the display should be spectacular.

It’s now the time to lift and divide perennials, so that they can continue as healthy plants, your lawns will be ready for their first serious cut and you can start thinking about applying a weed and feed application when the grass is actively growing. Roses have their main pruning and feeding at this time of year but don’t forget your specimen trees and shrubs will need a feed too, it’s easy to forget them but prize specimens will only look good if you look after them. If the weather perks up and we are spoilt by warm Spring sunshine don’t get carried away by buying and planting your annuals. You may be eager to get your garden started and they may be available in the shops and Garden Centres but resist the temptation until the fear of frosts have gone. If you are lucky enough to have a glasshouse you can give those early plants some protection and you can also get a head start in growing your own plants from seed for your borders, baskets and vegetable gardens. 96

Remember to use this time before the Summer season starts wisely, if there is anything structural to do now is the time to do it, this includes repairing paths, erecting sheds and glasshouses, repairing wind damage to fences and generally getting your garden easier to work in, because when the Summer comes the battle with weeds and pests begins in earnest.

Acj, one of Penarth’s most popular estate agents, has come a long way since proprietor Tony Jones set it up in his spare room in an apartment on the seafront of Penarth back in March 1993. We chat to Tony to find out more about the company and how the market is moving at the moment.

ACJ PROPERTY

What role do you play in Acj? I am the proprietor. Fortunately however, most of the staff have been with the company for many years. Therefore, on a day to day basis the company runs without me so I can focus on marketing, recruitment and key accounts. What attracted you to set up Acj in Penarth? It was more by luck than design. I chose to live in Penarth because it is the ‘garden by the sea’ boasting great views across the Bristol Channel and within a few minutes’ drive of Cardiff ’s shopping, sporting and cultural facilities. Subsequently it became clear, that like me, many relocating executives were choosing Penarth for both buying and renting a home. How many staff do you employ? We employ 13 staff; the majority are responsible for the management of nearly 500 of our clients’ properties. What services do you offer? There are three arms to our Company – residential property sales, the letting and management of residential property and we offer free ‘Buy to Let’ advice. What areas do you cover? Sales tends to be locally based covering Penarth, Penarth Marina, Sully, Dinas Powys, Barry, Grangetown and Cardiff Bay. Whereas lettings is much broader and ranges from Caerleon to Cowbridge. You specialise in property management, tell us more about this? In addition to conducting valuations and viewings we have qualified members of staff that are dedicated to property inspections, the provision of all property maintenance including an’out of hours’ emergency help line and the reconciliation of tenants bonds.

Tony Jones, Owner

ACJ are accredited members of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) and The Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS). Tell us how this benefits your clients. I am in fact a Director of ARLA, the national Association of Residential Letting Agents and, as such, am fully committed to a strict code of conduct that ensures that members: l Subscribe to the Ombudsman Scheme with a formal complaints procedure l Possess Client Money Protection insurance safeguarding tenants bonds and landlord’s rents l Have their clients’ accounts independently monitored l Sign up to continuous professional training The Tenancy Deposit Scheme provides an arbitration service in the event of a dispute between and Landlord and Tenant.

“ It’s the importance of communication. We love people and property and will go that extra mile.” 100

How do you see the sales and lettings industry at the moment? Are things moving? There has been a small boost in sales due to the new stamp duty rules and contrary to expectations we have seen a good start to the year irrespective of the uncertainty that an election brings. As long as interest rates remain low we anticipate transactions returning close to 2006/7 levels. The common factor between sales and lettings is the shortage of stock. In over 20 years that we have been in business, the private rental market has more than doubled. No longer is the Englishman’s (Welshman’s) home his castle. The difficulty in first time buyers entering the market and stricter rules on mortgage approvals has combined well with the growth of ‘Buy to Let’. It has created a burgeoning market that can only get more buoyant by the freeing up of pension funds for potential property investment in April of this year.

What made you join the OnTheMarket scheme? Do you belong to any other organisations of this kind? It was a ‘no brainer’ Onthemarket was conceived by the person that ran and sold Prime Location and wanted to break the duopoly of Rightmove and Zoopla whose cavalier pricing policy was eventually going to backfire with increased fees being passed on to vendors and landlords. Onthemarket is run by sales and lettings agents and therefore not governed by profit hungry shareholders. It is a portal that is simple and aimed solely at promoting clearly our clients properties without making 74p profit out of every £1.00 they take from an agent.

What makes Acj Sales and Lettings stand out from the crowd? It’s the importance of communication. We love people and property and will go that extra mile to keep regularly both Vendors and Landlords informed or reaction to viewings, property inspections and maintenance that also underpins our speciality in full service property management. We don’t do voicemail at Acj during working hours!

Melanie Lazarus established the practice in 2005. She had worked for a local firm since 1995 and recognised there was a niche in the Bridgend area for a specialist Family Law firm. Over the years the firm has grown from strength to strength and this year celebrates its tenth year of trading. We asked Melanie why she left a traditional law firm to set up on her own and what the company offers its clients.

Melanie Lazarus with Madeline Rand

MELANIE L AZARUS So why the move Melanie? I wanted to offer clients a personal specialised service focusing on all aspects of family law and felt that the Bridgend area was crying out for specialist family law solicitors and not just general practitioners.

Who is involved in the company and what are their backgrounds? I am a Solicitor and Director of the company. I have over 20 years’ experience in family law. I am a member of the Law Society panel and deal with high net divorce cases to include high asset financial work and complex children act cases. I have been involved in a number of high profile cases to include those involving lottery winners. I can act and have acted for clients both locally and nationwide. On a personal level, I have two children and I live in Bridgend. The firm employs another solicitor Madeline Rand. Madeline has two young children and lives in Porthcawl. Madeline has practiced family law since 2000 and has a particular interest in disputes involving unmarried couples. She is a member of the Law Society Panel and an accredited member of Resolution. The firm has five support staff who provide the highest standard of client care. What services do you offer? The firm acts for the private client and specialises in all aspects of family law to include divorce, separation, cohabitation disputes, private children act proceedings, domestic violence, civil partnerships, pre-nuptial agreements and wills. Clients are able to book in for an initial fixed fee appointment for advice at which they aim to answer any queries and give clients the most accurate information with a view to accomplishing their legal goals as quickly and as cost effectively as possible.

Rhian Pope, Personal Assistant to Melanie Lazarus

Hannah Taylor, Legal Assistant/Trainee Solicitor

Amy Britton, Practice Manager

“ The firm has five support staff who provide the highest standard of client care.”

Madeline Rand, Solicitor

Why do people choose this practice? Most of the firm’s clients come from personal recommendation. They choose the practice because a friend or family member has recommended the firm and they feel they can trust the solicitors to act in their best interests at a competitive price.

Can you provide testimonials? This is just a small sample of the feedback we’ve received from clients.

What are your plans for the future? The firm is seeing more and more clients in the south Wales area and plans to expand and has not ruled out opening other offices in south Wales to cope with the increasing number of new clients seeking specialist advice.

“The advice given was accurate, the outcome was perfect!”

“My friend recommended you as you did such a good job for his ex-wife in his divorce! I now understand why and you didn’t let me down!”

“I felt I could talk to you... I would like this opportunity to thank you and all your colleagues for your help in dealing with my case.”

“ You were so helpful and reassuring, many thanks for all your help and wonderful support. I do very much appreciate it!” 105

enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.

Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Our Creative Director has over 30 years of experience working at some of the world’s best design and advertising agencies. We know what we’re doing. We’re no mugs.

be a lot more work involved when developing an eCommerce website but the companies who we have worked with so far have had fresh ideas about how to market their products and that’s really satisfying. Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.

Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.

What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.

Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to

Are you busy? What kinds of businesses are you working with? Cog started properly at the beginning of this year and we’re getting busier. We’re always looking to take on exciting new projects and really 109

Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

John was asked to design and construct an en-suite bathroom in their bedroom similar to one he’d recently completed in Carmarthen for a friend of the couple.

What made you choose GW of St Clears to undertake your work? GW’s installed a bathroom for us a few years ago and we were so pleased with the work we naturally thought of them when we decided to update our kitchen. Did you talk to other companies before choosing GW? GW was the only company that we spoke to. What work did GW carry out? GW installed a new kitchen and they also installed an en-suite bathroom in our bedroom. Did you have an input into the design or did you leave it to GW? Adriana gave us two designs for the kitchen to consider after she visited us and discussed our requirements. We decided on the one we preferred and met up with her at the showroom and finalised the details. She has a great eye for colour and design and was able to help us choose the worktops and the radiator that would best complement the units and the flooring. There was also a great choice of fabrics for the window blind and a fabulous selection of mirrors in the show room so we were really spoilt for choice.

John made a brilliant job of designing the en-suite which had to be very compact because of space constraints in the bedroom. He helped us select the tiles on floor and walls from the quite vast range available at GW. Were you happy with the work GW carried out? We are thrilled with both the kitchen and en-suite and cannot compliment them enough. The men who installed them were excellent. They are all craftsmen and it was a real pleasure to keep them going with cups of tea.

John said, “After visiting the couple’s home and carrying out a site survey, I returned to GW of St Clears and set about drawing the bedroom to scale. I incorporated their existing bed and bedroom furniture on my plan and found that there was sufficient space to incorporate an en-suite bathroom with a sliding door. The Clients visited the showroom, examined my plans over a coffee, chose wall and floor tiles and approved my design and choices, at which point I was able to give an accurate cost for the job. The work took the anticipated two weeks and the clients were delighted.”

Was the project completed on time and on budget? Both kitchen and bathroom were completed to the timescale set out, and on budget. Would you recommend GW to family and friends? We already have recommended GW of St. Clears to our friends. No hesitation!

“John made a brilliant job of designing the en-suite which had to be very compact.” ❧ 26 ❧

The Cardiff Pointe development has to be one of the most exciting developments in South Wales for a decade. With plans for over 600 residential properties bordering the Cardiff Sports Village and views across the bay and Penarth Marina, Cardiff Pointe will no doubt be one of the city’s most sought after locations.

TO THE POINTE InBusiness met with Lydia Seymour at the marketing suite to find out more about this exciting project.

What type of housing is being built? There is a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and four and five bedroom houses being built within this first phase. All are contemporary new designs from Cardiff-based architects Scott Brownrigg. Who do you think the properties will appeal to? There is a diverse range of homes so there is something for everyone. Prices range from £175,000 for the two bedroom Caravel apartment right through to £750,000 for the impressive five/six bedroom spacious water-fronted Brigantine executive family home. Will there be any social housing involved in the project? The development will bring many social benefits to the area including the provision of significant off-site affordable and split-tenure property. Who will be marketing the properties? The launch of Cardiff Pointe and initial sales are being handled by a select team that includes agents Allen & Harris (part of the Sequence Group nationwide). The on-site Marketing Suite is open Thursday to Monday, 10am until 5pm. The developer has invested in higher specification fixtures and fittings, can you tell us more about this? To quote from the brochure, “Great care and attention to detail has been taken in ensuring the new homes at Cardiff Pointe are finished to the highest possible standards of specification and designed exclusively by Figurehead Homes and Scott Brownrigg.”

“Cardiff Pointe is helping to create a new destination in Cardiff - one that underlines Cardiff's status as a world-class city.”

German Rational kitchens designed by Cardiff based Spacefittingfurniture, contemporary bathrooms designed by Porcelanosa, energy-efficient windows plus hi-tech security mean that buyers will enjoy a level of finish and design to match the stunning location.

How many homes and being built and what type? Phases one and two feature 98 homes Plots 1 to 99 (there’s no number 13!). There is a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and four and five bedroom houses being built within this first phase. All are beautiful new designs from Scott Brownrigg architects. What facilities will be on site and when are these planned? There are already a range of incredible facilities on site, including the worldclass Cardiff International White Water Rafting Centre, the international pool with its fantastic fitness suite, Cardiff Ice Arena, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club plus food and retail shopping, restaurants and pubs right on the doorstep. In future, these facilities will be complemented by two Olympicstandard ice pads, the snow dome, retail, restaurants and leisure facilities and a six-star hotel. Have any been sold so far? Interest in the properties has been excellent - a stunning waterfront Barque five bedroom home was reserved within an hour of launching Cardiff Pointe. We’ve had considerable interest in the full range of available properties already.

The on-site Marketing Suite is open from Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm.

What impact do you think this development mean to Cardiff and specifically Cardiff Bay? What benefits will it bring? Cardiff Pointe is helping to create a new destination in Cardiff - one that underlines Cardiff's status as a worldclass city and reinforces the importance of Cardiff Bay as an integral part of that.

After a conversation working in Cwmparc, Jon was introduced to a local photographers work that has inspired him to preserve and promote a huge collection of images of Valleys life. Jon tells us more… How did you come to be in possession of the photographs? I’ve been a professional photographer for thirteen years. I’m also a multi-discipline artist - I use video, painting, photography and sculpture to create my work. I was working on a personal photography project on the Valleys in my favourite locations Cwmparc and Treorchy. I got chatting to someone about photography and was told about a local photographer, David Thickins, who had worked in the area for many years. After a little detective work, I was very surprised to be united with his work in Treorchy Library.

David sadly passed away a couple of years ago. I’m still not sure whether he was an amateur or pro, as the quality of the work is so good. He lived in Cwmparc, but covered all of the Valleys. I’m still finding out information about him so if anyone has anything they’d like to share, I’d love to hear more. What time period do they cover? I reckon we are looking at 1963 to 1976. Interestingly the images start in medium format film, and then move into 35mm. The quality of the medium format negatives is particularly impressive. How many images are there? I think we could be looking at more than 15,000!

“I’m keen for as many people as possible to see these pictures”

Why has this collection inspired you? The forensic detail and coverage of the area is extremely interesting. The work ethic behind such a large body of work is very inspiring, especially when you consider that David was working in film. Digital is so much easier these days. What are your aspirations for the collection? I’m keen for as many people as possible to see these pictures, in the way that the Vivian Maier archive has brought film photography to life for so many people. It’s a unique journal on a time of huge change in south Wales, as well as containing some spine-tinglingly good single pictures. Of all the images you have looked at so far, which is your favourite? The lady holding a drawing of a UFO is exceptional I think. Are there any images that you find particularly moving? I have found a number of pictures of Aberfan that, so far, I haven’t had the heart to look at. Will there be an exhibition in the future? I hope to create a traveling show that will visit towns across the Valleys.
