WELCOME

Well I can’t say that I’m not glad to see the back of 2016 and looking forward to 2017. As with many households across the Vale, the Roberts household was a sickly one indeed. No sooner had we got rid of one virus, along came another. Illness is a difficult issue when you’re self-employed. That pay cheque doesn’t automatically land on the mat if you’re not able to work. As much as we would have preferred to have had a few duvet days (or weeks!), the show had to go on. Good health is something we all take for granted and, when we’re going about our day-to-day lives, we don’t give it a second thought about how illness impacts upon those of us who run their own small business. Things could be worse though, I could still be working for the local Council instead of running Vale Life, working with my husband, employing great people, helping local businesses promote their services and products and promoting the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan to the world.

So, when you’re next out and about in your local shop, hair salon, boutique or butchers, spare a thought for those owners who are there to serve you, sometimes it’s hard being an independent. Russell Scott-Lawson, owner of Hawkes, the gentlemen’s outfitters in Morgan Arcade has dressed many a groom and groomsmen over the years. He was delighted to work with Luke Rowe (Welsh racing cyclist with Team Sky) for his forthcoming marriage to Cath Ingram. We chatted to the couple to find out why Luke chose Hawkes.

H AWKES When was the date of your wedding? We got married on the 12th of November, 2016. Where did you get married? We chose the stunning Cardiff City hall. The ceremony took place in the marble hall and the wedding breakfast and evening party took place in the assembly room. How did Luke propose Cath? We often walk our dog Oscar up around the rolling countryside around Caerphilly and Machen. One summer afternoon, we decided to go for a walk up there, this time just the two of us. When we got to the top of the mountain, Luke took me completely by surprise and got down on one knee and popped the question. He had also snuck a bottle of my favourite champers and a blanket in his rucksack, so we were able to sit down and enjoy the moment.

Why did you choose Hawkes for your wedding attire Luke? Cath’s dad had been going to Hawkes for years; pretty much since it first opened. So, when I needed a nice suit a few years ago, he suggested I go there. Since then it’s always Hawkes I go to if I want something that’s a little special. So, when it came to choosing the suits for my wedding, I didn’t hesitate to go to Hawkes.

Luckily, Russell worked his magic and got us a couple of pairs delivered by the next day for me to choose from.

What did Hawkes supply you with? We had all the suits and ties from Hawkes; for me, my best man (my brother Matt), Cath’s dad (Andy) and my other six groomsmen. We also bought all the groomsmen cufflinks from there which were little Vespas - Cath and I have a Vespa where we live in France, so it seemed a nice personal touch. We also had mine and my best man’s shoes from there. Days before the wedding, I decided I should ‘break in’ my shoes and I realised they were nowhere to be found.

The wedding had to be postponed. Can you tell us the story behind the delay? Originally we were due to get married on 21st November 2015. Unfortunately, at the beginning of September, Cath’s dad collapsed and was taken to hospital, where we later found out he had an abscess on his brain. He was in hospital for eight to ten weeks and, as we knew that there would be no way Cath’s dad would be able to make the wedding, we decided to postpone it.

10

Do you shop at Hawkes for casual and formal wear? Yes I do. I don’t have much need for many suits and shirts but for some nice casual wear - it’s great. The shoes are my favourite though. You always know you’ll get something a bit quirky and different.

Images courtesy of www.grahamdaviesphotography.co.uk

We always knew we were going to get married, so it meant more to us to just wait until he was better, so that we had the day that we wanted it to be and Andy be a part of it. Were you pleased with the suits and accessories that Hawkes supplied? Yes, we were really pleased with them. We had exactly the type of look we were going for. All my groomsmen are different shapes and sizes; from one guy who is around 5½ foot to another whose 6 foot 9 inches. All of the suits were tailored so everyone felt happy. Cath, where did you get your dress from? I bought it from Cardiff Bridal Centre on Mill Lane in Cardiff. One of my oldest friends, Julian Burgess, (one of the groomsmen) owns the shop with his sister Katie, so it meant a lot to us to be able to get the dress from them.

What made the day special? The day was more special than we could ever have imagined. I think with the long wait for the day, we appreciated it and what it meant all the more. We have been together coming up nine years in May, so it just meant so much to us to be able to become husband and wife. To be able to look around a room full of people we love and know that were all there for us is also pretty incredible. We are both really close to our families, so sharing the day with them, including Andy who had made a full recovery to walk Cath down the aisle, was a big part of it for us too. Where did you go on your honeymoon? We flew to Rome a few days after our wedding. We only had time for three nights there, as I had to get back to training for the coming season. 11

It’s such a beautiful place and we loved exploring the Coliseum and other Roman ruins. Italy was also the perfect place for me to enjoy all the best foods before getting back into my training regime and for Cath to have a blow out after ‘the bridal diet’. Would you recommend Hawkes? Absolutely. With regards the wedding, they just handled everything from sourcing extra ties to tracking down all the groomsmen to get the suits tailored - nothing was too much trouble. And, on a day-to-day basis, if you want something that’s a bit different and a bit special, in my opinion Hawkes is the place to get it.

There’s fashion history behind the new menswear shop on Cowbridge’s High Street. Vale Life chats to owner Leila Thornton to hear the background…

K ING FOX

Why did you choose Cowbridge, Leila? My granny opened Bettina’s dress shop here in 1968. Nothing would have made her happier than to have known her granddaughter was going to trade from the same premises. What made you want to open King Fox? I was working in the City as an Insurance Underwriter. Living in London was stressful and I was needing a change. Last year my dad was looking for a tenant for the shop and knowing that I was frustrated with London life, wondered whether I would like to try my hand at retail. We had often spoken about Cowbridge not having a dedicated menswear shop. The more I thought about it the more I realised how much I would enjoy being my own boss and dealing with customers as I love people and am friendly and chatty. I’d also get to be around clothes instead of insurance slips!

What brands do you offer? I am delighted to offer Magee 1866, Bladen (1817), Olymp, Santinelli Tailoring, Henry Arlington, 120% Lino, Aquascutum, Orlebar Brown, Sunspel, Bruhl, Pantherella and John Smedley. GANT clothing and a small range of shoes from G.H BASS are arriving soon. What services do you offer? I currently offer simple alterations such as jacket/trouser shortening. My Olymp shirts can come in three sleeve lengths and in a classic (Modern) to Slim Fit and range from a 14.5” - 20” collar. Do you sell accessories? I am still confirming who I will be dealing with for leather goods. I do carry some Aquascutum umbrellas and I’ve ordered some lovely gloves, scarves etc for next winter. Who are your customers? I would like to think that anyone can be my customer. If someone needs something, I try my best to find it for them. Big or small, tall or short. 20

Sizes range from a size 30 or 32 waist going right up in to the 50s. (Although I keep limited stock as I am a small shop I can have it in store within a few days.) What geographical area do your customers come from? I have had a few come as far as Cirencester and, as Cowbridge is a bit of a tourist attraction in the Vale, I have had some come from the North of England when visiting. How has business been since you opened? When I put in the paper that I was Bettina’s granddaughter, it was lovely to meet so many of her customers who said they would shop with me as they did with her. I feel really supported already and had regulars very early on. Cowbridge is a wonderful town for independent shops and florists, it’s one of the few High Streets left that is not full of chain stores. The traders here all recommend each other especially if they don’t sell something and they know someone else does. It’s a great community.

Do you have a website? Yes, and customers can buy items from it. Stock is regularly updated and the site can be found at www.kingfox.uk What do you think makes King Fox special? I want to sell good quality clothes from brands that don’t support sweatshops and child labour. I have tried really hard when sourcing my stock to ensure if it’s not made in the UK, that it is made in Europe. I know I won’t always be able to do that in this industry, but I am making a very conscious effort to ensure the quality and creation is of a high standard. John Smedley, Pantherella and Sunspel for instance are all made in England and are beautifully made. I think that it’s nice to support British Made. I do a bit of gift wrapping too so when you shop here you can leave it to me and I’ll make it look nice so it’s one less thing for you to think about.

Just recently, Blu Hair Design in Penarth celebrated their tenth birthday. For the past decade, salon owners Alexis and Hayley Williams, alongside their talented team, have run a brilliant business and transformed a vast, ever expanding clientele of loyal clients from across the Vale. 2017 is their year, starting with their very own salon transformation. Vale Life magazine caught up with the proud double-act to tell us more.

BLU H AIR DESIGN

Congratulations on your beautiful salon refurbishment both, you must be very proud? Thank you very much. 10 years, what a milestone! We’ve always taken great pride in our work and our salon. When looking to create our new look, both ourselves and our team sat down and discussed what sort of feel we’d like in the “new Blu”. The team create mood boards involving paint colours, textures and design to match our new Wella furniture. It’s been a real team effort and we’re thrilled with the result. How has the makeover affected business? With any makeover, it’s given us all a new lease of life. Our cool, chilled new surroundings have kept up-to-date with current trends and all of our clients love it.

We’ve also spotted that you’ve got a new product line? Yes Indeed! We’re very proud to be a premier Wella salon, utilising everything in their range, from product to styling and, more recently, their new System Professional range. A completely bespoke treatment service which is personalised to your hair’s scientific needs. Ask our stylists for a System Professional consultation on your next visit – you’ll be amazed. So, what’s new for Blu in 2017? As always, we have lots of projects on the go! We have new stylists joining us on the salon floor, lots of in-house education and fashion events already in the diary – watch this space (and our Facebook page) for much more. 22

I’ve been trying to spend more time with mum lately. Not because I’m worried she’s going anywhere (she’s so fit and well, she’ll probably outlive me!) but, as I’m getting older, I realise how much I enjoy her company. Given that I’m always on the go and mum’s telling me to stop and smell the coffee, I thought I’d take her advice and book us in for a spa day at the Vale Resort.

TRIED & TESTED

I’d heard that the Vale Resort was the first hotel in Wales to have teamed up with the British luxury spa brand, Temple Spa, and that it had a range of more than fifty traditional and holistic spa treatments. It had been a while since I’d enjoyed a treatment at the Vale, so I booked us in. Now for the science bit: Temple Spa is made in the UK but developed by world-renowned doctors, herbalists and professors of biochemistry and dermatology across Italy, Switzerland and England. The luxury brand fuses natural botanical ingredients with derma-science to produce a high quality product. We opted for the Champagne and Truffles Deluxe Treatment which combined a warm alginate mask followed by cold stone therapy to strengthen muscle tone. We were met by our therapists Anna and Elise who immediately put us at ease - they were so friendly and welcoming. They took us to our respective rooms and talked us through what was going to happen during our 90 minute treatment.

It took me a while to relax (being a bit of a stress head) but as soon as Anna started massaging my body with the various oils, the stresses and strains soon melted away. Anna assessed my skin and said I was dehydrated (I should drink more water). During the treatment, I was cleansed, soothed, lifted and moisturised using a whole host of luxurious botanical serums. They all smelled and felt amazing, the names of which summed up exactly what they did; ‘Be Gone’ for cleansing, ‘Skin Truffle’ for moisturising and ‘Be Firm’ for, you guessed it, firming. My favourite of all of the serums had to be the award winning ‘Skin Truffle’, which was full of black truffles, pure gold and diamonds and which had skin brightening, anti-wrinkle and reviving properties. When the treatment was done, we had coffees in one of the many chill-out rooms and chatted about our respective treatments. Mum has had many facials over the years and said that this one was definitely the best she’d experienced in terms of the spa’s décor and facilities, the therapist’s friendliness and experience in the products and delivery of the treatment, and the result of the treatment. 25

We made our way to the café and were presented with a bowl of gorgeous truffles and a glass of Prosecco. Our experience couldn’t have ended better! We decided that we should treat ourselves more and, as we enjoyed our time so much at the Vale Spa, we would definitely re-book for another treatment. Perhaps next time we would spend a lot longer there and take a water aerobics class as well as a treatment – and of course more mum-daughter time.

With six practices to its name, supported by 34 employees who work extremely hard to provide the sort of care and attention that they would expect to be given themselves, it’s no wonder that Davies and Jones Optometrists have survived in the industry for so long.

Andrew Hobby

UNPARALELLED We spoke to Practice Manager and Optometrist of the Treorchy branch, Andrew Hobby to find out more.

What is your role in the practice Andrew? I am a director, practice manager and optometrist. I have been with the company for 30 years. My particular work interests include low vision assessment and OCT scanning. We had the rst OCT scanner in the area back in 2009 and recently took delivery of a new, faster, improved model. The OCT is a fantastic addition to our consulting room equipment. It makes it possible to monitor eye health more easily and to detect diseases like macular degeneration and glaucoma earlier than ever.

Who are the other members of the team? The team consists of Diane Foale, lead receptionist and frame stylist. Diane has been with us 32 years. Sandra Ray, receptionist has been with us for 26 years. Julie Morgan, receptionist has been with us for 12 years. Alison Thomas, receptionist, for 8 years, Nikki Hurley, receptionist, two years, and Lee Berbillion, Dispensing Optician, 10 years. Lee started straight from school and trained as a glazing technician. In recent years, he has qualified as a D.O. What areas does the Treorchy branch cover? Along with its satellite branch, Treherbert (covered by the same staff in rotation) in theory covers the Rhondda valley from Blaencwm and Blaenrhondda down to Llwynypia. 26

In reality, our patients come from a much bigger area. Some travel from as far away as Carmarthen or Bristol.

You are award winning, tell us about your recent achievements. In February, the Treorchy practice won the ‘Marketing Initiative of the Year’ category in the AOP Awards. The practice has also been short listed for ‘Team of the Year’ and ‘Audiology Provider’ in the Optician Awards 2017. Winners will be revealed at a gala dinner in Birmingham on April 1st. We were also short listed for ‘Window Display of the Year’ in the Optician Awards 2016. A staff member did the double by winning ‘Student of the Year’ at the AOP Awards and ‘Leader of the Future’ in the Optician Awards during 2014.

VISION

And practice developments? We will shortly be reinstalling a glazing laboratory, managed by Lee, in Treorchy to provide and even better, smoother and faster service for our patients. As mentioned above, just last month we took delivery of a new OCT scanner.

What brands do you stock? We have some stunning eyewear for men, women and children at the moment. Patient favourites include RayBan, Anna Sui, Cocoa Mint and Jensen. We are also very excited with our two new ranges, Jimmy Choo and Hugo Boss.

“ We have some stunning eyewear in at the moment for men, women and children.”

What do you think makes you so successful? It all comes down to teamwork and our ability to offer a great service, using the latest technology. Generations of families come here who then spread the good word to friends and colleagues. We’re also a happy team and I think this comes across. Well, I know it does as it’s been mentioned quite a few times!

Allen Sadler Hair Salon in Penarth has been in business since 1976. Vale Life chats to owner Allen to discover more about its history and the reasons why this much loved Penarth salon is so popular.

A LLEN SADLER

I started my five year apprenticeship at fifteen in 1958 to Mr Ken Jones, a well-known gents hairdresser/barber and learnt all my skills there. I then managed another salon for him, again in Penarth before moving to a salon in Cardiff.

I am very proud to have built such a successful business, but I could not have achieved this alone. I have my wife Barbara and daughter Kirsty and a very dedicated and loyal team to thank. Terry, Zoe and Nic have been with me for well over 20 years.

I met my wife Barbara, also a hairdresser, and we decided to combine our knowledge and opened Allen Sadler, a unisex salon. I was very keen to improve my skills and attended several courses in London, learning and picking up skills from top stylists. Continual training is something I strongly believe in and that is why our staff are trained regularly on the latest techniques and trends by our stockists Goldwell.

Our clients come not only from Penarth but Cardiff and the Vale and further afield. “What makes clients come to us?” asks Allen. “I believe it’s that we offer the standards that you would expect from the City but at Penarth prices. Our staff are young, dynamic and happy; our clients often remark on the happy atmosphere. We are all proud of the service we provide. 28

We have always given a very personal service and this is obvious from the loyal client base, some of whom are several generations of family members.”

Beauty and skincare go hand in hand, and we can’t stress highly enough the importance of a good skincare regime, and the use of a good sunscreen throughout the whole year. In addition, we all want to look good for our age; fresh, natural looking, and well-rested - quite simply, the best version of ourselves we can possibly be.

DAWN A ESTHETIC CLINIC

Dawn Richardson of The Dawn Clinic, Penarth is a former nurse with many years’ experience in skin care and non-invasive procedures. She shares her thoughts with us.

Our anti wrinkle injections and botulinum toxin treatments target frown lines and crow’s feet – we inject the muscles which temporarily reduces muscle activity in the areas injected.

Without wishing to turn to facial surgery we’re increasingly turning to tailored facial rejuvenation treatments to deliver a super effective way to refresh our appearance with no down time.

Following the injections you will notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and the frown lines between your brows.

Full sensuous lips have long been associated with beauty and youth. We’re increasingly seeing young clients for lip augmentation which alters the appearance of the lips by increasing their fullness through injectable fillers, achieving natural looking fuller lips and a more defined smile.

Healthy young skin contains collagen that gives it volume, elasticity and strength. As part of the natural ageing process, collagen breaks down – it’s this gradual loss of collagen and elastin in the lower layer of the skin which contributes to wrinkles, facial lines and slacker skin. Marionette lines and smile lines are made increasingly obvious as facial volume begins to deplete. 30

This will result in the face looking tired, and sometimes even angry or sad when we’re not, and reduces the youthful appearance of your face considerably. Replenishing lost volume and providing lift are two keys to diminishing the appearance of facial wrinkles, lines and folds. A non-invasive and longlasting treatment for these typical signs of ageing can be performed with an injectable dermal filler such as Radiesse+®, which provide natural looking, immediately and long lasting results.

“Healthy young skin contains collagen that gives it volume, elasticity and strength.”

One of our most popular treatments has to be the new PDO lift which tightens sagging tissues and is a great alternative to the surgical face lift. This lift redefines facial contours and induces collagen production – the effects of which can last for up to 2-3 years.

between the sexes when it comes to facial treatments. So, for a fresh new look and a newly restored dose of confidence isn’t it time to take the first step on your journey to a more refreshed you today.

We’re increasingly seeing male clients who would like a more chiselled profile; a sharp masculine jawline, a more structured look to their cheekbones. After all, looking rugged is one thing – having wrinkles and frown lines is quite another – which is what coined the term ‘brotox’.

What clients’ say...

We have extensive training and knowledge on facial aesthetics for both men and women of all ages, and of course in the differences

TESTIMONIALS

“Dawn can always be relied upon to provide a very attentive, professional service. After having anti wrinkle treatments and a PDO thread lift on my lower face and neck I am thrilled with the natural looking results. I look younger and rested and no longer avoid the mirror.” “I have been seeing Dawn for approximately five years now, she is amazing and I would recommend her to anyone.” 31

When the medical profession can’t help, Anne Rodgers can. Cerys speaks to Vale Life about her journey with Anne Rodgers of Penarth.

Cerys

HEALING H ANDS I thought Anne was pushing my stomach and then I looked down, she wasn’t even touching me. Anne said that the energy that was causing the illness was being pulled out, she instinctively knew where the pain was. Although it’s difficult to prove without further exploratory surgery whether the endometriosis has gone, the results speak for themselves. The pain I feel now is different, Anne is still working on me and the pain has now gone from eight out of ten to one to two out of ten, I am confident that it will go completely. I couldn’t drive and I couldn’t walk up and down the stairs. I can do both now.

Anne Rodgers

I lost my sister Janice to endometriosis six years ago. She was 42 years old. I also have the same disease and have had it since the age of 13 years old. It’s an hereditary condition. I have been on painkillers and high levels of morphine for years. It’s hard to describe the pain of endometriosis. I can only imagine the pain levels being like the ones cancer patients suffer. On the 15th October 2015, I went in to hospital for an exploratory examination - a keyhole laparoscopy. They found that my entire insides were covered with endometriosis including my bladder, bowel, ovaries and womb. I decided to undergo surgery to have my ovaries removed privately. This was to stop the production of oestrogen and endometriosis producing its own oestrogen and my body being overloaded. They said I would be cured after this operation and I was to go back in six months for a check-up. I was in so much pain after it and was still on morphine. Endometriosis causes which causes pain and there is no cure for it.

There is no special clinic for endometriosis in Wales. There are two specialist doctors in Cardiff for the whole of Wales. There is better treatment available in England with maybe five specialist clinics there. It took £4,000 of my personal money just to get diagnosis, even though my sister had died of it. The doctors I saw even told me it wasn’t a Vale Life Summer 2013_41_Layout 1 02/08/2013 08:43 Page 50 gynaecological problem. They said I would need more surgery; I would need to be in an intensive care bed for one month and would need a bag which may or may not be reversible. They said that hopefully then I might not still have pain. I didn’t have confidence in them. Due to my condition, we have been unable to have children. I decided to take matters into my own hands and seek the help from Anne. I saw her twice a week for an hour each time, sometimes I had two sessions a week. I am now down to one hourly sessions. During my sessions with Anne, I saw colours and I felt frozen all over my body. 35

My husband and I have been together for 24 years and he’s been with me through all of this. Life has been hard. He has been to Anne for different complaints as well and is happy with his results. I told my GP about her but he didn’t even acknowledge it. I told my private consultant, he wrote it down. I find Anne to be stunning, hilarious, compassionate, and empathetic and she puts you completely at your ease. We will both continue to go to Anne and recommend her to as many people ODGERS as we can.N N E

Malmo Hearing is a family run business devoted to offering the best solutions for all your hearing needs. Malmo takes its name from its founders, Mal and Mo, who first opened their flagship store in Bridgend in 2007. Vale Life chats to Mal and Mo to find out more.

M ALMO HEARING

Tell us about your team? Our team consists of our Audiologists and wax removal specialists; Mal Johnston HAD MSHAA; Kim Spargo HAD MSHAA BSc; Georgia Kelly HAD MSHAA FDSc; and Leanne Andrews HAD MSHAA FDSc who is our daughter and also a hearing aid wearer. Leanne looks after our shop in Newport and our clinics in Gwent. Completing our team are Rachael Barnett, Practice Manager, Mo Johnston, company secretary, Richard D’Adamo, Sales Manager, and Jakub Wiatr who is our Office Manager and Hearing Aid repair technician. We pride ourselves on the experience of our team, and that each of our audiologists is Health Care and Professions Council Registered.

What services do you offer? Our high-street shop in Bridgend is open 6 days a week. Our core services are hearing assessments, micro suction ear wax removal, hearing aid demonstrations and the repair and servicing of any make of hearing aids.

Additionally, over the past 10 years, we’ve built up a network of day centres, bringing hearing services to an area weekly through our partnerships with independent opticians, health centres and independent pharmacies. We currently have ten outlets around South Wales and this year aim to make twelve.

We also offer tinnitus advice and information, tinnitus products, and custom made hearing protection.

What advice would you give our readers when buying a hearing aid and what sets you apart from the competition? To make the right decision you have to consider more than just cost. Price is of course important, but the particular loss a client may have and their lifestyle must be considered along with what level of technology that would be needed. Many factors need to be addressed so the client gets the best advice and solution for their particular needs. Customer service is key and we’re proud to hold 3 awards reflecting this. We support our clients by providing warranties, ongoing free aftercare and the scheduling of regular free of charge check-ups. Better hearing today, better hearing tomorrow.

Our micro suction ear wax removal service is very popular; this is where we remove debris or infection from the ear. There is nothing worse than the distraction and the uncomfortable feeling excessive wax build up can cause. We can help our clients with this, sometimes on the same day. We also supply hearing aid accessories, assistive devices for the hard of hearing (e.g. hearing aid compatible telephones). We carry out hearing assessments by appointment so please call Bridgend 01656 652444. 36

Local hearing care for local people – this is the philosophy of Malmo hearing and this is what sets us apart from the competition. We sell better hearing, not just hearing aids. We’re also not tied to any manufacturer so this allows us to independently provide an unbiased choice for our clients’ needs. You are award winning? Malmo Hearing recently won the 2017 Customer Service Excellence award at the South Wales business growth awards, maintaining the title from 2016. We also won this award at the Voice Awards in 2016. We’re also really excited to share that we have been shortlisted for the National Optometrist Awards for the Audiology category in conjunction with our clinic partners of 10 years, Davies & Jones Optometrists. To be shortlisted for a national award is such an achievement for us. Do you support local charities? We support and raise money for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and the British Tinnitus Association.

This is part of our commitment to educating the public about hearing loss and encouraging them to look after their hearing as they would their sight or dental needs. We’ve also recently teamed up with Ty Hafan and will be participating in fundraising events to help with the purchase of three vibroacoustic bean bags. These bean bags help the children feel the music through vibrations. Our team will be fundraising throughout 2017 to help Ty Hafan raise the funds they need to continue providing the high standard of care and support. Find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram where we regularly update you with news, products and events. We also hold regular competitions and giveaways so follow us to get involved.

With a flourish we’ve waved goodbye to winter, and say hello to the promise of sunnier days and spending time with family and friends in our gardens. With this in mind, we popped along to Eden Landscapes’ new Outdoor Living Centre at Pugh’s Garden Village in Wenvoe.

EDEN L ANDSCAPES

The local business has provided cost-effective landscaping and garden solutions since launching in 2002, gaining a well-earned reputation for providing high quality professional landscaping and design services in Cardiff and the Vale. We caught up with Directors Jamie Bloomfield and John Whitney who are thrilled to have launched their new base in Wenvoe, increasing their workforce of local people to 20 in the process. We asked Jamie and John what sets them apart from other landscapers? “Integrity and attention to detail are principals we hold dearly; and our team are renowned for attention to detail in there workmanship and fantastic customer service.” We spot a range of Cyfle i Dyfu wood products in the showroom and ask about these. “We’re delighted to be in collaboration with Cyfle

i Dyfu which is a social enterprise supporting marginalised people back into work through carpentry skills training programmes. The full range of wood products from this tremendous enterprise is now on sale and is what you’ve been admiring in our showroom.” Eden Landscapes provides the whole gamut of garden services including garden design, driveway installation, natural stone and porcelain patios and terraces, composite decking and fencing, and pond water features. You’ll also find a great range of garden furniture on display along with a huge range of garden sheds, which can be used for storage or for office use, and landscaping materials including fencing, trellises, reclamation materials, natural stone paving, porcelain paving, decorative gravels, and pretty arbours and arches. If you’re looking to complete a garden project this year, or maybe you’re 40

contemplating purchasing some new garden furniture, then we recommend a trip to Eden Landscapes (we loved the garden buildings). The imaginative displays at their spacious yard space were truly inspirational and we found out from Jamie and John that they hold twice yearly craft markets with local crafters – keep a look out on their Facebook page for dates, we may see you there. I’ve never been one to shy away from a trip to Cowbridge, so when mum and I were thinking of a day out, it wasn’t a great stretch to suggest the popular market town and, especially…

H APPY DAYS

Walk through the doors of Happy Days Vintage Homestore and you don’t know quite where to look as there’s so much to see. The best way we thought was to go in a clockwise direction, so we didn’t miss anything. It’s known as the biggest destination in town and we could see why. We normally chat as we’re walking around shops but we were both concentrating and taking everything in. It’s packed to the rafters with 30 local small businesses stocking unique items from restored vintage furniture, collectable toys, vintage cameras, vintage fashion, paintings, stunning patchwork throws and bedspreads and hand-crafted gifts. Apparently the vinyls from 60s to the 90’s are very popular. Now that spring is here, the front of the shop has a great range of cast aluminium bistro sets, stone urns and pots and vintage utensils.

On our visit, the store was busy; I’m guessing it was because visitors know that the stock changes regularly. It’s also a great place to mooch around if the weather is poor – which is was on our visit. There were a good mix of age groups - lots of people our age but also quite a few younger couples too; obviously looking for those lovingly restored pieces for their future home together. It was time for a cuppa so we made our way to the tearoom and were greeted by manager Deb - a very charismatic, fun-loving lady with many a tale to tell! The menu was full of home-cooked comfort food – think corned beef pie and freshly made sandwiches. We fancied something sweet with our coffees but it was a tough choice between the moreish looking scones, home-made cake, tart or crumble. We opted for a scone and lemon drizzle cake - both delicious! 45

You could easily spend a morning or afternoon here but I warn you, it could become addictive.

A conservatory is a wonderful way to enhance your home. It gives the homeowner an extra room, connecting the inside with the outside and allows you to enjoy your garden to the maximum. But what generally happens is that you can’t sit in them during the hot summer months because it’s too hot and, in the winter months, it can be too cold. Future Ideal Homes offers a solution with their tile effect replacement roof system. Vale Life lifts the lid…

FUTURE IDEAL HOMES Work in progress

Future Ideal Homes Ltd has over 30 years’ experience in the installation and building of conservatories, orangeries, windows, doors and conservatory replacement roofs systems. This family run business is owned by husband and wife Craig and Dina Harewood. Jeff Barcello joined the team six months ago as Technical Advisor. Being based in the Vale of Glamorgan, they have experience working on properties that have heritage values and specific requirements set by the local authority for all types of conservation buildings, ensuring that the traditional style and appearance is not lost but maintained whilst delivering high thermal performance. Please tell us about Future Ideal Homes? We only deliver the highest standard of workmanship and products, and to ensure we maintain this level of workmanship, all staff are fully trained and qualified in their own area of expertise and have met the minimum technical competency required by Building Standards Regulations.

This is all supported by a 10 year insurance backed guarantee and, as we are members of Network Veka and also Trustmark Registered, all work is guaranteed through a government backed scheme. All products supplied come with a European CE Mark and Energy Rating Certificate compulsory for many products. Tell us about your conservatories and replacement tiled roof system? A traditional conservatory roof whether it is Polycarbonate or Glass can mean the beautiful new addition to your home is too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. We are told that extremes of weather are likely to become more frequent, so it’s more important than ever to make sure any addition to your home can withstand the most severe conditions. At Future Ideal Homes Ltd we have been supplying and installing tile effect roof systems for several years to both new conservatories and replacing the roof of existing conservatories. CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

Why choose Future Ideal Homes? Mr. and Mrs John and Denise Barnett of Barry tell us why they chose Future Ideal Homes to transform their conservatory. How did you hear about FIH? Our son-in-law, who lives eight doors away knew Craig and when he needed a new front door, he chose to work with his company so suggested Craig take a look at our conservatory. Why did you work with FIH? We have lived in our property for 19 years this July. The conservatory wasn’t being used to its best. John used it to watch his beloved football but it was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. We weren’t making the best of it. What did FIH do? They removed the roof, plaster-boarded it, put in insulation, marine ply, roofing felt and tiled it. As we have a log burner, they had to make sure that this was incorporated.

How long did it take? We had it done in December so the weather wasn’t great. We were concerned as the roof was exposed and, as the conservatory and the kitchen were open plan, we were worried about security and safety. Craig and Jeff assured us that all the main work would be done in a day and they were right. They were prompt, clean and tidy. What we most liked about using a local company is that we built up a close friendship with them. If we had a query, they were there for us. Nothing was too much trouble. How has it changed the way you live? John still uses it to watch the football but we can now enjoy it together with a coffee (or a glass of wine!). Our dog Dylan loves it too. It was an investment but we feel it was well worth it. Would you recommend FIH to friends? We already have! A few of our friends have come to the house to look at it and were very impressed. We have been so impressed with the work that we’ve now worked with them to replace our upstairs windows as well. 47

The Spa at Penarth’s five star boutique hotel Holm House is unique. Visitors love its personal, homely and friendly atmosphere. Vale Life takes time out for a relaxing chat with Jodie Souto, Spa and Leisure Manager.

What is your role at Holm House? I am the Spa and Leisure Manager and the Assistant General Manager at Holm House.

FIVE STAR SPA

When did you join the Team? I joined Holm House in October 2014, just before the hotel opened. I am delighted to be part of the original team who set up this beautiful hotel and spa. It was a very exciting project and it has been so rewarding to see how the business has grown over the first two years. How many staff are employed at the Spa? I employed two fantastic and talented spa therapists, Abigail Beynon and Kate Matthews, when the hotel first opened - both of whom are still with us. Their enthusiasm and professionalism has helped to make the spa such a special and unique place. Over the last year the spa has become so popular that we now have another three experienced and talented spa therapists with us. I’m delighted to say they are all very proud to be part of the Holm House family. What does the Spa offer? I take it it’s not just typical spa treatments? Considering we are a small spa in a boutique hotel, we offer quite a wide range of services; from luxury individual treatments, packages and beauty treatments. We also have a small hydro-swimming pool, a steam room; a relaxation room with terrace, and a gym. We offer a membership at Holm House which includes full use of all our facilities. Daily, weekly and monthly guest passes are also available. As a trained Sports Therapist (BSc) and Personal Trainer, I have already built an extended client base at Holm House Spa, where I provide diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation; including gym and water-based exercises.

“ We always have wonderful seasonal spa packages and special calendar events.”

I also provide sports massage, nutrition and personal training. Sports Massage has been very popular with the locals and I’m now known for having ‘magic healing hands’! The gym is a perfect place for one-to-one sessions with clients, it’s a very personal space and the clients who have been training with me have achieved excellent results. Why do you think clients come to Holm House Spa? We’re the complete opposite to a large health club and I believe that’s why guests enjoy coming here. It’s homely, personal and always has a friendly atmosphere. We have a very bespoke product range (La Sultane de Saba), Holm House Spa is, in fact, the first spa in Wales to use this exclusive brand and is one of the reasons why our menu is so appealing and enticing to guests. The setting is also stunning. It is a one-stop place where you can enjoy anything from the spa menu, a nail 50

appointment with our nail technician, a quick wax, or a dip in the pool, followed by a glass of champagne and lazy afternoon in the relaxation room. Are customers mainly local? Holm House Spa is very popular with the lovely local people of Penarth. Hotel guests that live abroad or a distance away are always pleasantly surprised to find our spa facilities and services on arrival. They can’t wait to spend their stay being pampered and relaxing. Our Cardiff and Vale guests really enjoy a spa day, and the seasonal packages we offer. They come to ‘The Garden by the Sea’ (Penarth) to escape from everyday life of the city and to take in the breathtaking views of the Bristol Channel and Somerset beyond from the relaxation area. Many guests have said that on a sunny day with the view from the terrace ‘you could be anywhere in the world’.

As the spa/gym is based in a five star hotel, does that make it expensive? I think that many people may have the perception that a boutique hotel and spa will be expensive. However, at Holm House, we are actually very competitive in every area of the business, and our services and packages offer fantastic quality and value for money. Our hotel overnight stay and spa packages are very reasonable and extremely popular; it gives guests the opportunity to sample all areas of the hotel even if they are staying for just one night. We always have wonderful seasonal spa packages and special calendar events organised - Valentine’s Day weekend was a great success; the overnight stay and spa and spa day packages were fully booked weeks in advance - lots of guests commented that the packages were excellent and the service they received made their weekend very special.

We also have some fantastic spring spa and overnight packages available which are proving to be very popular, especially as we enter the summer months. What do you enjoy about your role? I enjoy how no day is ever the same at Holm House, especially as I work across the spa and the hotel itself. I take great pride in my role as I am so passionate about Holm House - I have believed in the hotels ethos since the day I saw Holm House, when it was empty and boarded up in August 2014. From carrying out spa treatments to sports massage, rehabilitation to personal training - which are all very ‘hands-on’ - then to being a manager, overseeing the spa facility and staff; to day-to-day activities and running of the hotel and bedrooms - the staff always make a joke, I change my outfits about four times a day to suit my different roles! 51

I think one of the reasons why I love my role is because I am able to get to know our guests. It gives me great pleasure to see our guests enjoying themselves when spending their time at Holm House, especially when I see them leaving with a spring in their step, having been completely revitalised!

If you ask most parents why they chose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe their child will a) receive a better standard of education, b) have better opportunities for future careers, c) be more disciplined, and d) benefit from small pupilteacher ratios.

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

Criminal Barrister, Sophia Dower LLB, looks back at her time at St Clare’s School, Porthcawl with the fondest of memories. When did you start at St Clare’s? Following in the footsteps of my Nonno (Grandad), my Mum and my big sister Jessica, I joined St Clare’s when I was just 5 years old. I was the girl with curly brown hair and chubby cheeks, who had to endure life with such a lisp that I struggled to say my own name! What difference did St Clare’s make? The combination of high quality teaching and fair discipline, together with the school’s continuous drive to mould us into confident, ambitious and well-rounded individuals undoubtedly played an enormous role in getting me to where I am today. What’s the driving force in your life? One of my biggest fears (aside from mice and fish) is a fear of settling.

It’s a fear that has worked its way into many aspects of my life, personally and professionally. It has been the driving force behind nearly everything that I’ve done, even stretching as far back as school. I was the girl who was devastated at the prospect of being cast as a Shepherd during the Christmas Nativity play, I wasn’t going to settle for anything but centre stage as Mary! I’m not saying that everything you do is a competition. But what I am saying is that you should set your own goals which will challenge you and stretch you to be the best that you can be, and you should never settle for anything less. Why accept a B when you know deep down you’re more than capable of achieving an A? You’ll only regret settling for second best later on, and it may be too late to change it by that point, so aim high from day one. 52

It was St Clare’s that planted the seeds of this way of thinking and from these beginnings I began my journey to becoming a barrister. Did you always want to be a criminal barrister? Age 16, I was fortunate enough to shadow a barrister for a week whilst she prosecuted and defended cases in courts across London. I was immediately drawn in by the cases, the clients and the courtroom arena. Over the years which followed I continued to undertake ‘minipupillages’ (barrister work experience) to broaden my insight into the profession. Always aim to be the best that YOU can be. YOU should never settle for anything less. Fast forward to 2014 and I found myself working with death row inmates in Jackson, Mississippi and volunteering to help defend the most serious criminal cases imaginable.

This experience provided absolute confirmation that being a criminal defence advocate was the path in life for me. Where did you study law? After finishing my A-levels at St Clare’s, I went to study Law with Spanish Law at University College London and graduated after 4 years of relentless lectures, essays, reading and gruelling exams. I then went on to study the Bar Professional Training Course, a 1-year intensive programme where you learn all the practical skills of how to be a barrister. The final stage is called ‘Pupillage’. This is basically a one year apprenticeship with a barristers’ Chambers where you spend 6 months shadowing a barrister and 6 months ‘on your feet’ in court independently arguing your own cases.

It is by far the MOST competitive stage of the entire process and is certainly not for the faint hearted. One Criminal Law tutor at Bar school told me that becoming a Criminal Barrister was like looking down the barrel of a loaded gun! A Chambers will rarely offer more than 1 or 2 pupillages a year, yet they receive on average several hundred applications for each place so there are hundreds of talented graduates forced to walk away every year. Given the extensive legal aid cuts in recent years, the profession is facing major challenges so the recruitment process has become fiercely competitive. After many interviews, ranging from ‘coming so close’ to ‘utterly disastrous’, I finally secured my pupillage at 3 Temple Gardens in London, a chambers specialising in Criminal Law. I began my pupillage in October 2016 and am 53

preparing myself to be ‘on my feet’ in Court modelling the wig and gown in just a few weeks’ time.

“ Always aim to be the best that YOU can be. YOU should never settle for anything less.” St Clare’s is a non-selective independent day school for boys and girls aged 2 ½ to 18. Places at St Clare’s are very sought after and early registration is recommended, particularly in the Nursery where class sizes are so small. Are you a Starter or a Finisher? Do you know? Here’s another question. I’m a High Blue. What colour are you? Confused? Janet Ballard of Cardiff based Chartered Accountants, Lewis Ballard tells us more…

L EWIS BALLARD

Firstly though, a more obvious question. How can you drastically improve business results and keep customers and team happy? The answer is always ‘with better communication.’ “This question troubled us,” explains Jan of Lewis Ballard “Our team are extremely bright, friendly and dedicated and we only work with clients we respect and who respect us. Yet occasionally misunderstandings happened. Despite our best intentions things still went wrong.” “It was very frustrating. Then we met James and things started to make sense…” Connecting people through stronger communication is a life-long ambition of James Knight, Master Practitioner and Creator of iMA. Trained at the world-famous Dale Carnegie Institute, he’s spent decades developing this powerful, yet incredibly simple tool.

iMA doesn’t delve into deep seated personality traits, instead it focusses simply on connecting people and eliminating miscommunication. Used by Coca-Cola, and other top businesses iMA helps us Identify different communication styles, modify our style and pace to match them, and Adapt to their focus. James identified the characteristics of four different communication styles, High Red, High Green, High Blue and High Yellow. Although we are all unique, our style, speed and focus form a natural comfort zone in one of these colours. “Success and happiness come when we appreciate differences and communicate well with everyone, not just the 25% who think and speak like us.” Says James, “We just need to understand other perspectives.” 54

Dislike someone at first? Are you simply communicating on different wave lengths? Clicked straightaway with someone new? You probably share the same iMA colour! This system is particularly powerful in our industry… As natural Finishers, Accountants are often High Greens. Self-contained, methodical and focused on facts and accuracy, with attention to detail. Yet the majority of our clients are High Yellows and High Reds. They’re Starters who think and speak at a faster pace, and focus on the bigger picture. Quick to act, but occasionally lacking follow through. High Reds are self-contained, and results focussed, while creative, fun loving High Yellows are open, and love admiration.

This obvious mismatch of styles between our team and clients led to frustrations on both sides. Yet by Identifying, Modifying and Adapting our team now delivers information as individual clients like it. Quickly getting to the point for High Reds, while praising the success and ideas of High Yellows. Just as High Greens suit accountancy, different industries attract other colours… Two of our clients; an estate agent and a training company, although happy work places, were both getting disappointing results. When the teams completed the iMA questionnaire, we immediately saw why!

But with only open, people focused colours, no-one was monitoring facts or results. Both businesses recruited results focused High Reds and things immediately improved. Not only is iMA transforming our business, it’s transforming our clients’ businesses too. And as trained iMA practitioners we are committed to spreading the word… in whatever style and pace you like! So, what colour are you, your friends and family? Go to www.ima-lewisballard.co.uk and find out now. Lewis Ballard Celtic House, Caxton Place, Pentwyn Cardiff CF23 8HA 029 2073 5502

Both teams were High Yellow, with just one High Blue each.

Also, Finishers, open, relaxed High Blues are supportive, inclusive and team orientated. 55

We have all heard of the global female divorce lawyers who have acted for the rich and famous such as Fiona Shakelton who represented The Prince of Wales along with LA divorce solicitor Laura Wasser who represented more recently Angelina Jolie in her split from Brad Pitt. It seems the rich and famous prefer the female divorce lawyer.

Melanie and Madelaine

MELANIE L AZARUS & CO.

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes

Johnny Depp & Amber Heard

However, for the rest of us, how important is this? There are many factors to consider about the solicitor who is going to handle your divorce case for example, reputation, experience, affordability but when you weigh up this decision, how much should the gender of the solicitor tip the balance? Your personal ease in speaking with your solicitor may be affected by whether the solicitor is male or female. Many clients feel that they are able to be more open and honest about the facts of the case and discussing sensitive issues with a female solicitor. The statistics show 61% of practising solicitors in family law are female. This is probably because women are tenacious and great communicators.

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

They have the ability to probe deeper and understand the full picture. Many female divorce solicitors will have children, have been divorced and fully understand the impact of a relationship breakdown. Women generally have more patience and understanding when dealing with the intricacies on the demise of a relationship. Men and women generally realise and accept this. It is rare that we have telephone enquiries from clients whether male or female asking to specifically see a male solicitor. Both sexes feel they can open up more to a female solicitor and certainly men like the female perspective. 56

Our solicitors deliver honest, straight to the point advice also fully appraising clients on the advice the estranged spouse is likely to receive in the case from the other side. We are not here to tell clients what they want to hear, but to fully advise and negotiate the best possible settlement in the most cost effective way, ideally without going to Court. However, this is not always possible and if we end up in Court, the aim is to win! We live in a time where due to better healthcare and advances in science we are able to enjoy life for longer than previous generations. We never know what is around the corner but we know that many people experience difficulties with their mental health and need to be prepared for that. It’s good to be prepared.

CJCH SOLICITORS

Here at CJCH we meet lots of people, of all ages, who come to us for advice who are concerned about safeguarding their future affairs.

This causes a great deal of stress for everyone involved because a person’s finances cannot be accessed or their property cannot be managed or sold.

Where possible we try to assist them by arranging a Lasting Power of Attorney in respect of their property and financial affairs. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that a person can have drafted which allows them to appoint someone of their choosing to act as their attorney if they are no longer able to manage things themselves in the future. An attorney would be able to have access to a person’s property and financial affairs to help pay bills, manage investments and pay care home fees. An attorney is always under a duty to act in the person’s best interest at all times.

In order to resolve this our team of experienced lawyers represent families in making applications to the Court of Protection so that family members can be appointed as Deputies to manage a person’s property and financial affairs. CJCH Solicitors can also be appointed as professional deputies if no family members are able to act. Once the Court has approved an application the family members who have applied will be able to access a person’s finances and manage the sale of a property under a Court Order. The Majority of applications to the Court are straight forward and dealt with on paper and do not require any attendance at Court. If you would like to speak with us for a free consultation you can contact our Mr John Moore (solicitor) who specialises in this area at Williams House, 11-15 Columbus Walk, Cardiff, CF10 5BY. Tel 02920 483181 or e mail j.moore@cjch.co.uk

Sadly, however, many people that we meet have loved ones who have not set up a Lasting Power of Attorney and no longer have the mental capacity, whether by illness or accident, to be able to do so. We often find that family members hit a brick wall when dealing with banks and buildings societies who will of course only deal with the account holder themselves. As there is no one legally able to act for the person it means that there are often situations where bills and care fees cannot be paid.

“ An attorney is always under a duty to act in the person’s best interest at all times.” 58

One of the reasons Seabreeze Homes in Penarth is so successful is that owner Nigel Read isn’t one to rest on his laurels. He has completely transformed the office and now offers a contemporary, inviting space for Seabreeze clients.

Nigel Read & Bradley Young

SEABREEZE HOMES Established in 1999, Seabreeze Homes is one of the go-to estate agents in the “enchanting coastal town of Penarth”.

The Seabreeze Homes office has now been extended, the layout re-designed and expanded to provide much needed extra office space. The refurbishment came as a result of Nigel asking his clients what they wanted and listening to their needs. As we have all seen from the adverts on the TV, house hunters do look online when searching for a property but they certainly still like to visit an office when selling or letting their property. “They want to feel relaxed and comfortable and enjoy a personal service.” says Nigel. “Also, knowing that myself and my team are on hand should they have a query is reassuring.” Is Nigel happy with the transformation? “Absolutely. I realised that the days of having a stark office is long gone. You go to service your car and you sit in a comfortable lounge and have a tea or coffee. We feel that if you are considering selling or letting your property, you should have the same service. This is why we have including a lounge area where customers can be shown the services we offer over a nice cup of tea or coffee.”

We asked Nigel what he thinks makes Seabreeze special? “We care; we are about the customer not the bottom line. We go above and beyond any other agent and provide a service that is second to none. Our marketing budget is second to none within the area and we work seven days a week. Just look at our five star Google ratings and you will see the difference.”

“We wouldn’t get such great results if it wasn’t for my amazing team. Joanne EllisHealy, Lettings Manager, has been with me for 5 years and Jessica Young, Sales Manager, for 2 years. We are delighted to have recently taken on Bradley Young as General Manager. Bradley was the overall manager from CPS Homes, so to have him onboard is a big coup for us.” Seabreeze Homes Sales Lettings Management 17 Glebe Street, Penarth CF64 1ED 029 2070 7064 www.seabreezehomes.co.uk info@seabreezehomes.co.uk Like and follow on Facebook, Twitter and Google+

TESTIMONIALS

What HRT clients say… I own and manage an agricultural estate of just over 2000 acres consisting of a Home Farm, 100 acres of forestry and a number of let farms, farm business tenancies, cottages and other businesses, including a Natural Burial Ground and a small Caravan Park. I have been exceedingly fortunate to have had professional advice from Herbert R Thomas for the last 20 years. Throughout this time, I have been provided with a very personal service and the quality of the advice has been outstanding. Whether it has been farming issues, planning and residential development, compulsory purchase, renewal energy projects, numerous sales and purchases of various parcels of ground or routine estate

management - Herbert R Thomas have been at my side and have provided me with the reassurance and support that I have needed to run my business. Rhodri Traherne, Coedarhydyglyn Estate

Would you please thank all your team involved in dealing with the sale of Cross Barn in Llysworney. Whenever we had questions or reasons to call the office we were impressed with the way all involved either had answers to hand or would follow up and promptly call us back with answers - a professionalism not always evident nowadays. This goes across the board from Linda (reception) and all in both showing the house and progressing the final sale process. As it turns out, despite it taking time, the first person to view ended up buying and, from what we gather, are delighted with the purchase. In closing, can I say I would have no hesitation in recommending you to friends in the area should they be looking to sell. Once again, our thanks. Nick and Diane Stockdale 75

Local award-winning builders, MRJ Properties Ltd have over ten years’ experience in Property Development and Project Management. Based in Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, this family run company have built up an enviable trust with their clients. We chat to Mark and Rhian Jones to find out more.

MRJ PROPERTIES

Who are the owners of the company? Mark Jones, who has over 35 years’ experience in the building industry, and his wife Rhian Jones. MRJ Properties is a family run business. What type of building work do you specialise in? We are a building contractor and project management company. We undertake all types of building work, but specialise in building complete new build properties; extensions and refurbishments, with everything in between such as kitchens; bathrooms and conservatories, to be honest the list is endless, there’s nothing our team cannot do when it comes to fulfilling the idea a client has. Our forte is the high quality construction and finish we produce every single time. We offer the full service from a clients’ initial visualisation through to the end product, by offering them services that can include dealing with architects; planning; and building regulations on the clients’ behalf. We also employ a team of highly skilled tradesman, who

not only enjoy creating our clients ideas through a very high standard of workmanship, but whom also have a very courteous work ethic, for which time and time again we are commended on from our clients. Mark ensures we offer a very personal approach with our clients, so that they feel that either Mark or myself are always on the end of the phone or email if needed for anything. Who are your customers? Where do they come from geographically? We mainly deal with the domestic/ residential market, and geographically the majority of our customers are from the Vale of Glamorgan and surrounding areas, and much of our business comes from recommendation from previous clients. We understand that you are an award-winning business, please tell us about this? Every year LABC hold Building Excellence Awards across the country. This year we were the overall regional winner for LABC Cymru Vale of Glamorgan “Best New Individual Home” 76

which was an extremely proud moment not only for ourselves, but our whole team of tradesmen, and the architect. The winning project provided a new property in place of a sub-standard 1940s house previously occupying the site. The existing building was completely demolished to make way for a new two storey property with a cinema room within the roof space. The main living accommodation to both the ground and first floor benefits from uninterrupted views over open countryside. The rear of the property makes use of large glazed openings and has a contemporary look, whilst the front elevation was constructed with traditional blue lias stone, all from the grounds of the property itself. Internally the property marries both the contemporary and traditional aspects very well to achieve a modern country style. The property was also fitted with a full home automation system. To top off the awards night, we were also awarded as Highly Commended

“Best Local Builder” for consistently carrying out work to a high standard. Nominations for the awards are made by the Council’s Building Control Surveyors, who are responsible for the supervision of the projects as they progress on site, through to the eventual completion of work. These building awards also help those looking to appoint new contractors to focus on those builders who are considered to be the very best in their field. Why do you think customers choose to work with you? Our ethos is ‘Quality is built as standard’. We offer a personable approach, and a one-stop bespoke service to each individual client. The end result provided by one building contractor to another can unfortunately vary considerably. We not only excel in offering a high quality built product, but also the service around it. We provide honest advice from the start, even when sometimes that means talking ourselves out of work. We are recommended locally time and time again due to our experienced team, eye for detail, and honest approach.

TESTIMONIALS

What clients say... I was approached by Mr. Mark Jones and Rhian Jones of MRJ Properties to obtain a difficult Planning Approval for the reconstruction of a property in Wick. Designing for them was a pleasure and also effortless as they had a good understanding of construction. Mark and his team did not compromise on any of the trades or sub-contract specialists and when it came to completion there was nothing that I could fault and I have quite exacting standards. Nothing on the project was rushed and the saying ‘haste is the enemy of quality’ became the motto for the job. I am pleased to say that I was so impressed with the organisation and finish, that I have now included MRJ Properties to act as contractors for other clients who in the same way are extremely pleased with the work they carry out. Barry Mayled, Architect & Garden Designer, Homes & Garden, Penarth. 77

How to get in touch... If you would like advice or a free quotation for any improvements to your own property, or an individual new build, contact Mark or Rhian at anytime who would be happy to make a site visit to discuss your ideas or plans further.

£18,500 Raised for RNLI with Ruth Jones & HRT Herbert R Thomas helps raise £18,500 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution with Ruth “Nessa” Jones. Herbert R Thomas was delighted to be associated with RNLI Porthcawl, at The Royal Pavilion in Porthcawl. Gavin & Stacey’s very own – Ruth “Nessa” Jones & friends hosted the tremendously successful charity event, raising money for the RNLI Lifeboats. Ruth had the support of her good friends and Gavin & Stacey co-star, Rob “Uncle Bryn” Brydon, as well as Bonnie Tyler and Only Men Aloud. An auction was held, which included a wide variety of items, with our very own Andrew Thomas - Senior Director of Herbert R Thomas as auctioneer. £8,500 was raised from the auction. The total raised on the evening was £18,500. Ruth said, “Andrew -gavel- Thomas. What a class act. His highly impressive auctioneering skills took the whole evening into another league, and it was his panache and persuasion that made the bids go higher and higher, raising a fabulous amount for the charity. Thanks Andrew. You totally rock!” Andrew Says “Herbert R Thomas was incredibly proud to be part of a superb and worthy evening. I’m very pleased that we were able to raise such a large amount for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

I would also like to thank our host for the evening - Ruth Jones, who made the night memorable for all.” www.hrt.uk.com 82

The town of Barry has a lot to offer. It has an award-winning beach, a funfair and an abundance of parks and a fantastic range of independent shops and businesses. We at Vale Life aren’t the only ones to love it. Barry resident Andrew Farmer loves it too.

THE L AST WORD How long have you lived in Barry? All my life. I was born in Woodlands Road nursing home and spent until my 20’s living on the Witchell Estate, where my father still lives. What do you enjoy most about living where you live? I think Barry is one of the most under rated places to live in Wales. We have an abundance of parks, beaches, countryside and eating places. That along with a magnificent beach and coast, why would you not want to live here? Who lives in your home with you? My wife of 29 years Maria. We met when Maria was in the Navy and I was a member of the Royal Marines Reserve. We have two sons, Tom who is 20 and at University in Portsmouth, and Sam who has recently turned 11. What do you do for a living? I manage the day-to-day affairs of an aluminium manufacturing company, AAI, that specialises in aluminium doors, windows and curtain walling. We cater for both the commercial market and also the domestic market. I also run our Bifolding Door Division which is known as Alexander James Bifolds. What services does the company offer? We offer a full bespoke service to both commercial and domestic customers who require anything aluminium. We have recently completed a variety of selfbuild homes alongside projects like the Hamptons by Hilton Hotel in Bristol. How long have you worked there and what do you enjoy about it? I have worked here since 2014 following a long spell as Contracts Manager for various Main Contractors. I really enjoy the contact with our customers and seeing their dreams become a reality. What geographical areas does the business cover? We are happy to travel anywhere in the mainland of the UK.

What do you enjoy doing in your downtime? I enjoy a variety of things from spending time with my family, playing golf, mountain biking and more recently playing the guitar and doing a small amount of singing. Where do you like to eat out? I particularly enjoy La Cucina in Barry and the Ocho Lounge in Penarth, but will try anywhere that has the potential for good food.

What motivates you? The same things that drive me. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Hopefully sitting back a little and spending more time enjoying life whilst overseeing our younger members of staff running the business on a day-to day basis. I think that my role will soon develop more towards the business development and client/customer relationship side.

What three words describe you? Slim, suave and sophisticated! Only joking, I would say loyal, trustworthy and dependable. What drives you? Being able to provide a stable home and a good start for our children, along with seeing something I took over as a small business growing into a quality, well respected and larger company. What makes you laugh? Laurel and Hardy, Tommy Cooper and my two boys Tom and Sam. 83
