WELCOME
Spring has certainly sprung in the Vale and there’s much to celebrate in our beautiful coastal county. We love it when businesses do well. That is certainly the case for our cover stars Coast Hair & Beauty At The Chapel. Not only have salon owner Stacey and husband Jamie welcomed little River into the world but they are now enjoying the fruits of another labour with the launch of the re-located super gorgeous salon in a converted chapel a few doors up from their previous premises. As you can see from their feature on pages 12 to 15 and the glamorous pics in the social life page 90, they’ve done an amazing job. There’s lots going on in the seaside town of Porthcawl with the introduction of Experience Porthcawl (learn more about this on pages 80 and 81). We have also been working hard behind the scenes to bring the town another Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival 2019.
Last year’s event raised the impressive sum of £12,000 and we’ve had an excellent response from businesses who want to be involved this year to help raise valuable operating funds for the RNLI. We hope you like what you see in the pages of this spring’s issue of Vale Life. Our readers tell us that they love seeing what’s going on in and around the Vale, presented in an interesting, colourful and informative way. Enjoy the spring! Neil Munn, an accomplished former professional boxer and Head Coach and trainer at Penarth Amateur Boxing Club has launched an elite range of boxing and training products.
POWER HOUSE
Vale Life popped into the Station Road gym to find out more. How’s life Neil? You’ve expanded your product line since we last met… It’s all good. I had developed the basic range to ensure that my youth boxers had a good product to work with. There’s so much over-priced rubbish out there and I wanted to make sure that we were using really good gear. Are your products available to other boxers, trainers and gyms? We have a secure website and all the products are available there.
“ This elite range will take the punishment that pro boxers will throw at it.”
Why have you developed the new elite range? I wanted to step it up a bit. Obviously this range costs more but the quality is excellent and superior to anything else we’ve produced. Developing the previous range gave me huge feedback so I’ve put a lot of effort into ensuring this elite range will take the punishment that pro boxers and trainers will throw at it.
What are your plans for the next year? I love training with my personal clients. I’ll be working hard with the young boxers - we have some really promising ones, and I’ll be trying to get the NMPower brand out there. I think I have the best job in the world but, you know what we say, no pain - no gain!
Have you had any feedback so far? Yes, it’s been brilliant. Customers like the attention to detail. They also appreciate that I listen to their feedback so they feel they have contributed to making a great product even better.
For more information and to view the latest NMPower products, visit the website or call Neil on 07773 550401.

They say that every picture tells a story, so feast your eyes on these images and you’ll understand why Keyif ’s popularity is growing daily. Keyif is receiving excellent feedback across social media and the popular feedback sites, and quite rightly so we’re big fans ourselves.. Karen from Cardiff said, “My Mum and I had been meaning to have lunch here for some time and wish we had gone ages ago. A very friendly welcome followed by one of the best lunches we've ever had. The food was beautifully presented, incredibly fresh and delicious and we weren't rushed in the slightest.
The ambience was perfect, and the staff were so friendly and attentive. We've already booked for an evening meal in a few weeks, which is a special annual family dinner at this time every year. So glad we eventually visited this 'little jewel in Penarth' and can't wait for the next time. Fabulous!” 8

COAST HAIR & BEAUTY
When you walk into Coast Hair and Beauty at The Chapel your first thought will be “Wow!” The creative mind of owner and leadingedge Creative Director, Stacey Griffiths is evident in every last detail of this beautifully designed interior. Stacey has applied her creative talent and it shines through in the design of her new salon.
Congratulations on the new salon. Why the move? We were looking for new premises where we could expand Coast and build on its success. We had always wanted to create something special so when the Chapel became available it was as if our prayers had been answered. We wanted to create an environment for our guests that exceeds their expectations, somewhere that takes inspiration from high-end salons found in London and New York. We are striving to set ourselves apart from anything they might have experienced before. What services can Coast offer? We are a unique hair and beauty salon with an extensive treatment menu. We have designers who specialise in haircutting whether subtly shaping long hair to move beautifully and enhance the guest’s features or creating the most contemporary short precision cut.
Our expertise beyond Cutting and Styling is in hair colour and specialist techniques such as Babylights, Air-Touch Balayage, Colour Correcting and the treatment and restoration of previously over-processed hair. We like to take our guests on a hair journey. This starts with a thorough consultation, before preparation of hair for colour, through to the colouring service and beyond. We develop a sustainable home-care routine to achieve our guest’s desired look so they can get the very best out of their hair without compromising its condition. We are one of the first salons in the UK to have a Colour Bar on the salon floor. Designers measure and mix hair “colour cocktails” in front of our guests so there is very little downtime spent in a back room where this is traditionally done. This means that our guests enjoy their full-service time with our designers and can see the exact products that we are using on their hair. 12
We are one of Redken 5th Avenue’s major accounts and as a result have been one of the first Salons in the UK chosen to stock Redken Colour Gels, the number 1 colour range in the US. We continue to offer the amazing Kerastraight Ultimate Treatment for dry, frizzy, damaged and unmanageable hair. Hair Extensions are also a very popular service. We offer a personal solution of bonds, tape or rings. Brides to be need look no further for the perfect wedding morning experience which is available either in salon, at home or at venue. Tell us about the beauty treatments you offer... We have a beautifully designed tranquil treatment room where we offer Nail treatments, Hair Removal, Eye Brow treatments, Massages, Facials and Make-Up. For your nails we offer Gelish, Polygel Nail Extensions and IBX nail treatment for weak and brittle nails.
AT THE CHAPEL
For the most pain free hair removal, we offer Lycon Waxing and Intimate Waxing. For your eyebrows and lashes we offer Express Waxing and Threading, Henna Brows, Brow Tinting, Lash Extensions and Lash Lift. We also specialise in applying brow makeup for the perfect brow along with full a Make-up service. To relax and ease away those aches and pains, we offer Swedish and Hot Stone Massage.
Please tell us about your team… Our experienced staff consist of myself (Creative Director), Kinga (Artistic Designer), Gina, Lisa and Carla (Creative Designers), and Lara (Senior Designer and Beauty Therapist). Our team are highly skilled and trained in all aspects of hairdressing. Training is key in our industry and we are constantly pushing the boundaries of hair design and are always at the cutting edge of style and technique.
After their treatments guests can relax on our decking area with a complimentary detox iced tea. A popular recent addition to the treatment menu is on-site GP led antiwrinkle injections, facial enhancement and glycolic and retinol peels. This compliments our offering of nonsurgical electronic facials using the Elemis Biotec equipment.
What has been the response so far? Our guests love the feel and aura of the salon. They have been very impressed by our custom designed double-sided styling units which we affectionately call our “altars”. They are positioned to emphasise a sociable environment for both staff and guests. Guests love our colour bar and the new experience it brings to their colour service.
“The Blow Dry Bar is also a huge success.”
The Blow Dry bar downstairs is also a huge success. Guests can pop in for a blow dry and perhaps enjoy a glass of 13
Champagne, then have their make-up done before popping up the road to the newly renovated Fox Pub whose new owners are friends Gavin Henson and his fiancée Katie Wilson Mould. Guests love the striking artwork in the Blow Dry bar. This is by an artist who has exhibited extensively including at the Royal Academy of Arts and Saatchi Gallery, London. The work is the backdrop to our guests’ hair shots on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Are you expensive? No. Our prices are very competitive, and we were determined to maintain them at their existing levels. We want to ensure that the Chapel provides our guests with an even better experience while remaining affordable. We also offer a Loyalty Program and run monthly competitions on Facebook where guests can win a variety of our Products and Services.
How can we book? It's really simple! Online at www.coasthairandbeauty.com where guests can choose their date, time and preferred designer. Or call on 01656 880724.
I truly believe that we have achieved this and a result my guests will enjoy the unique salon experience that only Coast can offer.
What do you think makes Coast Hair and Beauty at the Chapel so special? The Chapel was built for the community by the local residents of St Brides Major in 1863 and was a place of worship for the next 130 years or so. The original deeds with the signatures of the residents involved are displayed on our wall. As a hair designer with 12 years’ experience, 8 of them as a salon owner, my main consideration whilst renovating the Chapel was to create a sleek, functional and eclectic space whilst respecting the Chapel’s heritage. My philosophy is that your work space should inspire the people within it to be the very best they can be. 14

In London Robert found his way into some of the very best kitchens Britain has to offer, spending time working for 2* Michelin Chef, Tom Aikens, at his eponymous Chelsea Restaurant and Multi-Michelin Starred Austrian Chef, Wolfgang Puck at CUT. We understand that you have retained many of the service staff. Why was this important to you? We were conscious that many of the staff were hard working, committed and incredibly able and were the real assets of the previous business. Regrettably they had lost their jobs through no fault of their own. We wanted them back not only as we felt it was the right thing to do morally but also to ensure continuity of service to Pier’s loyal and established clientele.

Cowbridge is not only known for its fantastic eateries, but it also has an unenviable reputation for great boutiques. One such boutique is Tallia. We caught up with owner Sue Jones to find out why she’s loving the new seasons drop.
TALLIA
Your reputation is certainly building Sue? I’m so grateful that my customers are liking what I’m offering. I’m particularly excited about our spring/summer collections after a busy buying few months. Tell us why? As well as our existing, much-loved brands of Javier Simorra, James Lakeland, Tivoli and Femme; everyday basics of Kaffe, Liverpool jeans, Luella knitwear and Jorli knitwear and, for special occasions, Tia and Apanage. I really look forward to stocking the shelves this time of year. There is such a variety of fabrics from cool cottons to soft silks in beautiful vibrant colours. There are styles for everyone from tailored to comfortable loose-fitting garments to suit any occasion.
“My customers say that we are friendly and helpful.”
There will also be some lovely new brands which I’m really excited to showcase. What about accessories? Our accessories, such as jewellery from Isles & Stars and Zelly and handbags from Zohara and Punch are very popular and really make any outfit complete. Who are your customers? I cater for ages 25 upwards with sizes ranging from 8 to 22. What do you think makes Tallia special? My customers say that we are friendly and helpful and not at all pushy there’s nothing worse! I always try and offer something a little bit different and don’t order too many of the same item - again nothing worse than seeing your outfit on another woman! Most of all, I think it’s our honest feedback that women appreciate. 19

Why King Fox of Cowbridge has built up such an enviable reputation and client list is clear to see. Owner, Leila Thornton has a keen eye for stocking the right brands and has the smart/casual look nailed. Here, she tells us what’s on offer this Spring/Summer.
K ING FOX
What brands do you currently stock? Orlebar Brown, Sunspel, Stetson, Henry Arlington, Magee 1866, MAC Jeans, Giordano, Eden Park, Santinelli Tailoring, Olymp, Bruhl, Pantherella, Falke and more. Who are your customers? I want everyone to feel welcome coming in to my shop. I’ve never liked shops that make you feel intimidated as you walk in. I try to greet everyone who walks through my door with a smile and I’m always honest when giving an opinion. I love nothing more than my customers telling me how many compliments they had when wearing something from me and like to hear how good they felt. I rarely buy more than two or three of a certain print as I try to keep it a bit exclusive.
What are you excited about for this season? Colour! I love this season because we say goodbye to navy, burgundy and grey and hello to this year’s main focus of florals, fun prints, checks and vibrant colours.
If you have a wedding, party or BBQ to go to this summer, come see me.
What do you think will be your best sellers? MAC Jeans are still my best sellers. Strong legs? No problem! They do jeans in different leg lengths and widths. I challenge you to find a comfier pair than their jog ‘n’ jeans or flex fabrics with extra stretch. Orlebar Brown who were recently acquired by Chanel is always popular in the summer with their fabulous shorts and polos. Giordano, as always has some great prints this season. I’ve also introduced Olymp’s new premium range, Signature.
Great service, great quality clothes, highly recommend this shop for something not on high street.

Stocking a real mix of clothing brands from occasion wear to lounge wear at a range of price points, there’s really something for all budgets and all ages at Bryl’s Boutique, Barry.
BRYL’S BOUTIQUE
diverse selection of clothes, footwear, accessories and jewellery. They are constantly pushing their boundaries to ensure they make the best selections for their customers, whatever the age, style and budget! They are loving their occasion wear this season. It’s really hard to find something exclusive at an affordable price but, with their dresses priced at around £189-£239 and with the nearest stockists being over 70 miles away, they feel we’ve got it covered! Their footwear for S/S19 is definitely something to shout about! Comfort is always key, but the selection is just amazing this season! Again, they’ve got a real range from sliders and flip flops to wedges and going out heels!
The boutique also stocks excellent quality, stylish but comfortable footwear- it has to be comfortable otherwise it’s a no go from them! The owners are more excited than ever about spring/summer 19, as they feel that their range of brands and their buying is really spot on now.
Since 2014, they’ve been expanding and growing with Anne’s daughter Lousha initially joining her in the business and then her eldest daughter, Natasha in 2017. During that time, they’ve taken on lots of new brands and, as they are three different ages and all have quite different styles, it means they end up with a much wider,

Two Valley now Barry girls opened the doors of Annie and Lolo in Barry’s High Street in May, 2018 and, since then, owners Lois Nolan and Angharad Mullooly are attracting customers from not only residents of Barry but much further afield.
ANNIE AND LOLO
Annie and Lolo simply fill their beautiful shop with products they love. Products they are passionate about and they would buy themselves, at prices that are accessible to all. This contemporary, lifestyle shop, has merchandise ranging from jewellery, bags, candles, cards, plants and pots, skincare, gifts, cards, prints and unique handmade goods from likeminded indie businesses. What makes Annie and Lolo special? When the girls decided that they wanted to open a shop, they envisioned it being more than just a “shop”. They wanted to create a lifestyle space that was open, friendly and inviting.
They came up with the idea of a communal work space (hence the central wooden table) which would act as the hub of the shop. The table has become their signature, a multifunctional piece of furniture that since opening has served as a workspace, a meeting desk, a prosecco table, a workshop centre piece, and somewhere for simply coffees and chats. Currently they sell via their physical shop on Barry High Street, customers will soon be able purchase their beautiful products online when their website becomes live. In the meantime, they invite everyone to follow them on social media to keep updated with developments on their website launch, new stock, workshops and events. 24

Sully Island (Welsh: Ynys Sili) is a small tidal island and Site of Special Scientific Interest at the hamlet of Swanbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, 400 yards off the northern coast of the Bristol Channel, midway between the towns of Penarth and Barry. But did you know during the 13th century, the island was the base for Alfredo De Marisco, a Norman pirate known locally as The Night Hawk. In the Middle Ages, the island was well known for its involvement in the local smuggling trade. The area is well worth a visit, not only for its growing reputation for gastronomy but also for its local independent shops.

Pleasant surprise! Excellent meal. Our party of seven thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. Good portions, well cooked, great ambience and lovely staff. Overall a happy experience we will repeat.
Hired the function room for my wife’s 60th birthday bash. The food was superb and without doubt the best buffet food around. Plenty of food and superb choice catered for every taste. Staff were amazing and a fantastic venue. We hired a band, but they do have their own superb disco if you wanted. Well done Steve and the team could not have gone better. Very happy and for the price we paid it could not be bettered. 27

For many young people with complex autism and associated conditions the transition into a college environment can be very challenging. Although they may have received good educational support in the past often they lack the life skills that we all take for granted. Building these social and vocational skills is vital if a young person is going to successfully integrate into their community. Beechwood College in Sully is one of the leading Further Education establishments for young adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions and is dedicated to empowering its students to develop the life skills they will need in their adult lives.
BEECHWOOD COLLEGE “83% of last year’s students achieved BTEC and ASDAN qualifications, with many students participating in Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Enterprise Schemes aimed at building confidence, team working and independent living skills” the College told us.
Opened in 2004, Beechwood College utilises recognised teaching techniques to provide opportunities and experiences for each individual, regardless of ability, to prepare them for that later life.
“But none of this would be possible without a dedicated workforce, not only of specialist clinical and education staff, but support workers who build strong relationships with our students and encourage them to fulfil their goals” they added.
The College is justly proud of their students: their positives attitudes, commitment to learning and progress they make.
Beechwood College is currently looking for more Support Workers to join the team. They offer some of the best rates of pay in the health sector
and are recognised by their own staff for the quality of training and career progression on offer. If you would like to know more contact careers@beechwoodcollege.co.uk

EYECARE FOR AFRICA
Vale for Africa Every year Vale for Africa (registered charity 1155642) takes a team of optometrists from Wales to Tororo District in Uganda to provide desperately needed eyecare services for local rural poor. It is one of the most deprived counties in the whole country. Most patients have never seen a doctor or optometrist in their lives and many have vision problems preventing them from contributing fully (or even at all) to their family, work or community life. Many, therefore, cannot provide for the education for their family, simply for the sake of a pair of appropriate glasses; many are blinded by cataract, glaucoma or trachoma, all of which are curable or preventable if there is early diagnosis. Vale for Africa fund cataract surgery in the Benedictine Eye Hospital, Tororo, for a mere £40.00! Not only are they providing treatments for these very needy areas but they are also providing basic eyecare training for local Village Health Teams, higherlevel training for staff in the small local Eye Hospital, as well as donating much
needed diagnostic equipment to the hospital teams. Please check out their website www.valeforafrica.org.uk for details of this, and their other projects, and any form of support from you, our Vale community, will be very welcome. www.valeforafrica.org.uk 30
And there’s more! RenoWheel also undertake restoration of antique brassware including household brassware and lighting, church and cathedral brassware and lighting, cast iron and brass bedsteads. There’s so much more to Wooden Tops Furniture, Bridgend, than meets the eye. We caught up with one of the owners Sophia Davies to find out more.
WOODEN TOPS OUT WITH THE NEW, IN WITH THE OLD
What is Wooden Tops best known for Sophia? We’re probably best known for buying and selling pre-loved furniture including wooden antique, vintage and retro furniture, Chesterfields, and not forgetting Amber our infamous shop dog. We also spray paint your furniture along with kitchens in our purpose built in house workshops and are Soda Blasting Specialists - but we offer a lot more besides. Please tell us more? We are stockists of the fabulous Frenchic furniture paint and customers come for miles to buy this from us. It’s great for indoor and outdoor use. It’s not full of nasties and can even be used indoors without fear of inhaling chemical fumes. We stock the full Frenchic Paint and product range along with everything you’d need including advice for your up cycle project from start to finish.
We also stock Polyvine Varnish and Fiddes and Sons Furniture Wax. I see you’re selling giftware items as well. Yes, customers are loving these. They are perfect for adding a bit of colour and interest to the home. Our Wrendale Designs pieces are very popular as are the Thornbush Hill candles and diffusers. What else are customers buying right now? We have a great selection of small and large mirrors. The large mirrors are fab for standing against a wall (not all mirrors need to be fixed). We’re in a bit of a gin craze right now if you hadn’t noticed. A new gin bar has arrived in Penarth. We caught up with owners (and cousins) Jacques Aviles and Ashley Boucher to find out more.
How did it all begin? It all started with Nest 23 situated in the newly developed Castle Quarter which, we believe, was the only privately run family business on High Street, Cardiff in 2017. It was always a goal to launch Gin 64 in winter 2018 - we felt, from our experience of living and socialising in Penarth, this would be a great addition to the already vibrant social scene in the Vale of Glamorgan.
GIN 64
Tell us a little bit about Nest… Nest is a cocktail and prosecco bar and it’s mostly recognised for its unique instagrammable swinging flower chairs, which attract a lot of Instagram selfies (#nest23 #nestflowerbomb). What about Gin 64? Gin 64 offers over 100 different gins from around the world including well-known names down to the independent, family run gin distilleries. Gin 64 not only boasts a huge selection of gin, but we also offer a selection of rum and fizz, prosecco, wines and draught beer.
“Over 100 different gins from around the world.” Why do you think gin is so popular right now? Gin has seen a huge revival recently and is really on trend. I think this is due to the versatility of taste, using different botanicals, which enables small distilleries to delight us. Gin is also a great drink to experiment with - different fruits, garnishes, flowers and mixers. We’ve been attracting not just Penarthians, but also customers from all over the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond. Is it predominantly enjoyed by women? Granted the pretty gins were once-upona-time attracting the ladies, but I think recently, with the huge selection of gin on the market now, men have also been won over.
Describe the interiors… Gin 64 is a cosy, intimate bar full of character and charm in a candlelit atmosphere. There is also a snug area, with trunk tables and Parisian style chairs amongst the ivy trailing off the walls. Do you hold events? Yes, we’ve already had two gin tasting evenings which have been a huge hit, and this is something we hope to hold at the end of every month. Customers will learn about the different gins from around the world and learn about the history of gin. For customers who wish to book on to our next gin tasting evening, they may email us at info@gin64.co.uk. Gin 64 is also available for private hire. 38
Anything special on the horizon? Yes, we’re excited to open our Gin Garden ready for the spring/ summer season and we’re also working on Penarth’s very first gin. Watch this space!

Ex-Royal Navy serviceman, Lewis Morgan, will be taking on Mount Toubkal, in North Africa, throughout September to raise money for armed forces charity SSAFA.
SSAFA
Talking to Vale Life magazine ahead of his climb, Lewis said, “I’m exRoyal Navy and served for five years, spending around three and a half at sea. I currently work for Openreach and along with 20 other Openreach personnel, I will be tackling Mt Toubkal to raise money for SSAFA. Most of us are ex-Forces and a few are very supportive civilians. We all have personal reasons for doing this. Mine is that I and my family have utilised SSAFA’s services and this is a chance to repay them.” He added, “SSAFA are helping ex and currently serving members of the Armed Forces with any poor situation that they may face. This can range from confidential help for PTSD, right the way to financial assistance for families and everything in between.” 40
Lewis, who lives in Rhoose, has sought out advice from Vale MP Alun Cairns on the best ways to raise funds ahead of his climb, given his experience of raising funds for charity over a number of years. Mr Cairns said, “I’m really pleased to support Lewis. We had a long discussion about how he can reach his target and I’m confident that he will. SSAFA provides vitally important support for veterans and their families. It is great to see Lewis not only raise funds for the charity but also raise the profile and awareness of the great work they carry out.”

Immediate defibrillation can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. Around 30,000 people have a cardiac arrest each year outside the confines of a hospital.
BUSINESSES IN PARTNERSHIP SAVING LIVES
It can take the emergency services several minutes (and sometimes longer) to arrive. Scary statistics! That’s why a number of businesses in Penarth raised the necessary funds to equip the area with its very own defibrillator which is now placed in K-Tax Taxi Services. Station Approach has that good vibe about it. It has a number of quality independent businesses, so here you can get a good meal, a great coffee, buy or sell a house, buy an instrument, a gift, attend a craft course, hail a taxi and, worse case scenario, avail yourself of medical assistance which could help save your life. Angelina and Cathy of Glass by Design organised the fundraising. Glass By Design are a one-off, independent glassmaking business in the beautiful seaside town of Penarth. Join them for a ‘dropin’ session to make your own memento with glass. Chances are you will leave addicted to glass and all its possibilities. Full teaching programmes are available. Also, a great choice of quality, handmade works from Welsh makers in the mediums of felt, metal, paper, wire, slate, ceramics in their studio gallery. Visit them and get addicted! David Baker & Co are another one of the businesses who gave towards the cause. Founded by David Baker in the summer of 1969, they are very proud to be celebrating their 50th year in business. Their core values remain the same, and they pride themselves on their hardworking, honest and innovative
approach to dealing with property. Buying, selling or renting is not always straight forward, because every home and every situation is different. They are there to guide you along the way and to make things as smooth as possible. Pencerdd Music stocks instruments for wind (clarinet, saxophone, flute), brass (trumpet, trombone, cornet, Tenor Horn, pBone and pTrumpet), strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass) and guitars (acoustic and electric) catering for beginners through to professional musicians. Brands include Freshman and Faith guitars, Trevor James, Yamaha, Odyssey and Jupiter brass and Woodwind Stentor and Antoni bowed strings. They also stock a extensive selection of sheet music and have a fully equipped service and repair workshop with experienced technicians. ACJ was established in 1993, selling and renting properties throughout Penarth, Cardiff and the wider Vale of Glamorgan and is now one of the largest agents in the area. The team at ACJ can help you to buy, sell or rent a property and have lots of useful guides on their website, including an online approximate valuation of your property for sale or rental. K-Tax are celebrating over 50 years in business. Owner Mandy Williams took over the business from her father five years ago and the company now employs between fifteen and twenty staff. K-Tax offer a 24-hour service and are known for their very reliable, conscientious drivers who are all DBS checked and 41
hold the relevant medical certificates. As well as serving the people of Penarth, the company are the preferred taxi company for the Vale Council. As a company at the heart of the community, K-Tax regularly help the elderly in Penarth by helping them with their shopping. With Mother’s Day in our hearts, we’re celebrating the strong women of the Vale of Glamorgan and the inspiring mothers that we have in our local community; juggling work and family lives, running successful businesses and, all while making time for family. Here we focus on Esme Mason: mother, business owner, pioneer.
GIRL POWER!
The Masons Group are a family run business who have been operating in the Vale for over 100 years. We were very sad to hear about the passing of Esme Mason, Doyenne of the Welsh removals industry and the centre of the Masons Group, just before Christmas. In tribute to her inspiring life, we spoke to the team at Masons to find out more about Esme. It all began with Eric Mason, a RAF veteran, and a second-hand Luton Army Truck in 1905. Today, the group is run by a fourth generation of Masons and spans three different industries: removals and storage, Masons Self Storage and The Business Centre’s serviced and virtual offices. Esme had been working on the busses when she met Eric in the late 1950s and it wasn’t before long that they were married in 1959 in Cardiff! Esme joined Eric working for the family business almost by accident. She was asked by Eric to cover for his secretary in the office one afternoon and she never looked back!
She continued to support Eric and the business whilst raising the children. However, when Eric sadly passed away in 1983, leaving Esme with four children: Gordon, Brett, Sarah and Richard, as well as a business to run, Esme had to take the reins. Her eldest son, Gordon, remembers that when Eric died in 1983, they were faced with a choice: “We either had to shut up shop and walk away, or take it on and make it happen.” They made it happen and Masons Moving Group became Esme’s fifth child! An inspirational woman, Esme was working in a largely male-dominated field at a time when women were expected to be at home looking after the children. Esme retired 53 years later, having helped build Eric’s small business into one of the UK’s leading removals and storage companies.
“Operating in the Vale for over 100 years.” 44
In the 1990s, whilst Esme and by now her three sons were at the height of the Welsh Removals and Storage industry, they saw other business opportunities arise in the Vale and opened the very first self-storage facility which was later rebranded and expanded as Masons Self Storage, a 24/7 state-of-the-art storage facility based on the edge of Barry, just five miles from Penarth. Never standing still, just over ten years ago, Esme and her sons also saw a new trend emerge within the serviced office, meeting space and virtual office market and, in response, built the now highly successful Business Centre just next to the impressive Masons Self Storage Centre. Esme was a pioneer, even though it pained her to lose her husband after twenty-five years of marriage, she was so unbelievably resilient. She discovered a wealth of strengths and skills that had been hidden within her come to the surface and she thrived, becoming the cornerstone of the Masons Moving Group.
Esme spent fifty years perfecting her customer service, many of her staff learned well from listening to her on the telephone as she spoke with both customers and suppliers. Esme has left behind a legacy; the Masons Group are as strong as ever with a fourth generation of Mason currently working their way up the ranks. Along with a strong sense of family, Masons are dedicated to getting involved with the local community, supporting wherever they can. From sponsoring local events like the Billboard Ensemble Christmas Panto 2018 to the sponsorship of Barry Athletic Bowls Club, the Masons Group provide support wherever possible. In particular, one cause that is close to their hearts is Woody’s Lodge. An Armed Forces charity who provide support to veterans and leavers of the Emergency Services, and their families. Masons have been with Woody’s Lodge since their beginnings in 2017.
Sarah, Esme’s daughter, who has recently also joined the Group, discussed the family pride at working with Woody’s Lodge as it commemorates the memory of their father Eric, who served as a pilot in RAF Bomber Command throughout the Second World War. In addition, they have a long history of moving members of the Armed Forces and their families across the UK and Europe. Masons have grown from a small family business into a business at the forefront of their industries with Esme Mason central to its success. With Masons Moving Group, Masons Self Storage and The Business Centre, the Masons Group are able to offer a range of storage and removals services at great value prices on flexible contracts as well as modern serviced offices offering businesses in the Vale a great business community to be part of. You could certainly say that Esme left behind her a legacy to be proud of.

One thing we really enjoy doing at Vale Life is introducing readers to Cardiff ’s hidden gems. The Dutch Garden Centre may be well known to many of you but this brilliant, family owned garden centre for some is still not on your radar.
GOING DUTCH First, let’s dispel a few myths. While it was established by a Dutchman, it doesn’t just sell tulips. No, the Dutch Garden Centre is a proper garden centre - a purists’ garden centre. No chain outlets, no gift shops, no café (there is a coffee machine), no, this is the real deal - a garden centre run by gardeners. Owners Lisa and Gary Jones have taken over the centre after Lisa's father, Jaap Deen (yes, he’s Dutch) retired a year ago. Jaap established the centre over forty years ago and his grandson Sam is the third generation of the family to be involved. Gary, who has 36 years’ experience as a landscape gardener is clearly passionate. “We want the garden centre to be known for its purity as a garden centre. We love giving advice and helping visitors. I think what sets us apart is the personal service we offer.
We’re reasonably priced and, because we’re gardeners ourselves, we’re in tune with what’s in season and popular.” Their enthusiasm, as a couple, is infectious. As we chat away about plants, pots and hanging baskets, you can tell they live, eat and breath horticulture - their knowledge is breath-taking. “Spring is so busy for us,” says Lisa. “We have customers who have been buying hanging baskets from us for over thirty years. Every spring they pop back in they really are like old friends.” Need help with your hedging plants? How about tutoring on tulips? The Dutch garden Centre believes it is South Wales' largest stockist of trees, shrubs, conifers and hedging and bedding plants as well as being a specialist importer of Dutch and Italian flowering shrubs and bulbs, and locally sourced plants and trees from the UK. 48
The couple add, “We select only the best plants for our customers and have seasonal offers running all year round to ensure you get the best value come rain or shine.” And hundreds of happy, satisfied customers can’t be wrong. Gary is also happy to visit your home or business to recommend what to plant advice, personal service, price, quantities and qualities. “We sell a lot of semi mature trees, hedging, hanging baskets, window boxes, pots, topsoil and turf to the trade and public. There’s not much we don’t do if it’s garden related.” From decorative stones to landscaping sundries and plants this green-fingered couple clearly love what they do. “You know,” says Lisa, “we still get excited about coming to work after all these years. We don’t regret a day.”
“We’re in tune with what’s in season and popular.”

Increasingly, the media and government are becoming concerned about our excessive consumption of sugar. Is this something which affects you?
THE WHITE STUFF
Do you need something sweet to kick into action most mornings? Are you reaching for a sugary snack late afternoon? Is a lack of energy affecting your life? - Is your weight becoming an increasing concern? The impact sugar can have on our health is extensive, so how can we avoid falling into the trap of sugar treats? I have devised 7 steps that you can adopt today to balance your blood sugar levels. 1 Aim to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks per day – which consist of mainly complex carbohydrates e.g. beans, lentils, beans, wholegrain, vegetables, nuts, seeds. 2 Drink plenty of filtered water! 3 It’s not always time for tea – replace caffeinated drinks mainly with water and the odd herbal tea. 4 Stop snacking – once you have cut out the caffeine, stick with 3 meals a day, this will sustain you and keep your body balanced.
5 Stop being so simple – avoid refined carbohydrates such as white sugar and refined cereals. Remember, refined foods are simple, simple for our body to convert to fat! 6 Be more green – supermarkets now sell a raft of leafy vegetables which are bursting with vitamins and minerals, which is ideal to aid your health.
Looking for a more tailored plan? As a trained allergy and nutritional therapist, Angharad Evans can offer you a bespoke plan to aid you in adopting a healthier diet. To discuss this further please get in touch: www. angharadevans.cymru, 07739210291 or evansangharad@icloud.com
7 Bring me the protein – to reduce your hunger, increase your intake of protein which can come from sources other than meat, such as eggs, quinoa, beans and salmon, trout, hummus/chickpeas, baked beans. In addition, eat plenty of butternut squash, carrots, swedes, beetroot, sweet potatoes, asparagus, aubergines, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, celery, courgettes, cucumber, fennel, garlic, kale, lettuce, mangetouts, mushrooms, onions.
“Drink plenty of filtered water!” 50

Terraced property
Detached property
Additional bedrooms can be achieved in the majority of terraced properties. If the existing height in your loft is adequate, then converting your loft becomes a great option. Roof windows can be used to service bedrooms, bathrooms and the new staircase. Planning permission is generally not required for this type of conversion – unless your property is a listed building, within a conservation area or a National Park. Converting the existing space is a very cost effective method of achieving an additional room.
A hipped roof may restrict head clearance and available space in an existing loft. However, the roof can be extended either by a hip to gable or side apex dormer roof extension. Generally this type of extension can be carried out under the property’s permitted development rights and does not require full planning permission. The additional height and space achieved is often used to accommodate the staircase and/or bathroom.
Semi-detached property A rear dormer utilises the lofts available space to its fullest. This allows you to walk into both corners of the conversion at the rear of the property, enjoying maximum ceiling height. This option often proves to be the most cost effective method of achieving more living space – it’s possible to achieve up to 80% of the original property’s footprint. This common form of development on semi-detached properties maximises the available space within the roof scape.
Bungalow
Steelwork in conjunction with strengthened roof rafters follows the traditional method of achieving your extra space. Alternatively, the roof can be “retrussed” – this involves replacing the existing trusses with new ones specially designed and manufactured to provide an attic room, particularly useful if the existing property is of timber frame construction. Another advantage of this method of re-trussing your home becomes clear if the existing ridge height is not sufficient and the ridge line needs to be raised.
Converting the past Expanding the future
With so many wedding venues to choose from, how would you choose the one that’s unique to you? We asked newlyweds Robert and Kelly Walsh what made them choose the stunning Pencoed House in Cardiff. Robert tells us more.
PENCOED HOUSE ESTATE
Where did you meet? We met Boxing Day 2011 in the Golden Lion pub in Penarth. How long have you been together? We’ve been together for seven years. How and where did Robert propose? I took Kelly on a surprise Christmas market cruise over to Bruges Belgium and proposed on board the ship over evening dinner. It was the weekend of my birthday in December 2015. Why did you choose Pencoed House for your wedding venue? We looked at a few venues and Pencoed House was our favourite. Also our friends got married there and had already decided it was the venue for us. Did you work with a wedding planner there? No, we organised the whole wedding ourselves (with the help of Jamie and Jo). Describe the day? Incredible! From start to finish, it was everything we could have hoped for. The weather was superb. The whole event ran like clockwork, and Jamie was amazing as MC!
How special were you made to feel by the staff at Pencoed House? Very! We cannot say enough about how fantastic they all were.
Would you recommend Pencoed House to anyone thinking of getting married? Absolutely! The place is perfect.
What were the “best bits”? It’s hard to put a finger on it, but if we were to say one thing, it was just how relaxed the whole day went. The evening party and accommodation and morning breakfast were just fab! The food was amazing too!
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Where did you get your dress Kelly? Wed2Be, Llantrisant.
Did you stay at Pencoed House and, if so, what was that like? Yes, we did. We rented the entire place for family and friends (all 26 of them) and all we can say is WOW! Just amazing! Everything was spotlessly clean, modern, and it was fantastic to wake up in such beautiful surroundings with all our family there. Did you use the venue’s caterers, or did you hire your own? Who were they? Out of the three caterers that Pencoed House work with, we chose to go with Cresta Caterers and the food was fab. Did you go on honeymoon? If so, where did you go? We went to Budapest. 52
Where did you get your and your groomsmen’s outfits Robert? I had a custom suit made at Moss Bros in Cardiff I hired suits for the groomsmen there as well. And the rings? Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery in Penarth. What about the cake? Kelly’s cousin made it. Did you have entertainment? If so, what was that? We had a disco and live Motown band.
“Incredible! From start to finish, it was everything we could have hoped for.”

DAVIES & JONES
AWARD WINNING OPTOMETRISTS Davies and Jones Optometrists joined forces with Malmo Hearing over a decade ago to provide patients with a complete hearing and sight care service in their community. This service is now award-winning as they recently won the Audiology Practice of the Year 2019 by the Association of Optometrists (AOP). Cath Coles, Dispensing Optician from Davies and Jones tells us more. What does Davies & Jones and Malmo Hearing offer its clients? We offer, where possible, a same day, one stop appointment for eyes and ears and are working with the local hospital trust to provide essential patient supplies. It makes sense to offer optometry and hearing needs under one roof which saves clients time in travelling to two separate businesses, often in different areas. This is particularly important for the elderly or those who have to rely on public transport.
Congratulations on winning the award. Tell us more about it. This is the Association of Optometrists eighth annual awards ceremony which celebrates outstanding talent and innovation in the profession, recognising exceptional contributions made by individuals and teams across the country. How does it feel to win the award? This award means the world to us. It's very important that we integrate audiology care as much as we can into our services. It was no mean feat as we managed to beat off stiff competition from leading national audiologists to take home the coveted trophy. The accolade is greatly appreciated, and we would like to thank all who voted. 54

There’s no better testimonial than that of a happy customer. We chatted to Catrin and Michael Pool of Rhoose, who were delighted with the work carried out by Future Ideal Homes who design, supply and fit orangeries, conservatories, windows, roofs, doors and much more.
FUTURE IDEAL HOMES
How did you hear about Future Ideal Homes? They were recommended to us by a friend who had work carried out by them previously. What work did they carry out for you? We had all the windows and doors in the house replaced. We also had bifold doors in the kitchen and bedroom. We had the old conservatory taken down and replaced, plus a tiled roof on the conservatory instead of glass. Who did you deal with at Future? Initially, Craig and Dina came out to quote, then Craig and Rob carried out the work in the house. Did you get quotes from other businesses? We did get quotes from a few other companies, one or two being national companies.
Why did you decide to work with Future? They came highly recommended, and, when they came to quote, they suggested options we hadn’t thought of, such as the tiled roof in the conservatory, and the bifold doors in the bedroom. They clearly knew their business inside and out. Another national company had told us that bifold doors in the kitchen were impossible, but Craig and Dina said it was not a problem. They were a like a breath of fresh air.
Would you recommend Future to others? I cannot recommend Future highly enough. They are friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, and professional. I would urge anyone to choose future for their home improvements.
How did you find working with them? They were so easy and pleasant. They were friendly, efficient and positive. Nothing was too much trouble, and they always had advice and suggestions. We felt we were in safe hands. What difference has the work made to the way in which you now enjoying your home? The work has made a vast difference aesthetically. The house is now warmer, and although we haven’t used the bifold doors yet, they will make a huge difference in the summer months. The tile roof on the conservatory will make it a room we can utilise in all seasons. 59

P ORTRAITS AT MISKIN MANOR
OFFICIAL LAUNCH
Back in February we had the immense pleasure of attending the official launch of the new Portraits restaurant in Miskin Manor.
Readers may recall our feature in the autumn issue of Vale Life previewing the newly refurbished restaurant which is appropriately named because the walls are adorned with many portraits created by Chairman, and in-house artist, Colin Rosenberg.
The evening was really enjoyable and after a few words from Managing Director Amanda Rosenberg and her father Colin, guests enjoyed an excellent meal prepared by Head Chef, Tom, and his talented brigade. Amanda describes the food as “Bistro Rosette”.
The event was most enjoyable with friends, family and guests from the business community attending. Prior to a three course meal, guests enjoyed canapes and a selection of excellent wines showcased by Fine Wines Direct which has an impressive showroom on Penarth Road.
The dining room is tastefully designed with wood panelling painted in an elegant Farrow & Ball colour. “We have taken away the white linen on the tables, but kept the crisp napkins and now have our wonderful bespoke tables and chairs on full display with complementing glasses and cutlery. We have created a more contemporary look and feel for the restaurant.”
Guests were also treated to some smooth sax.
“Guests enjoyed canapes and a selection of excellent wines.”
All agreed the evening was a real success and it is testament to the hard work of all at Miskin Manor that Portraits is now officially open for business. 66
We certainly can’t wait to try their Sunday Lunch. We always recommend that you make a booking to avoid any disappointment. Please call 01443 224204 or email reservations@miskin-manor.co.uk

For those who are local to Porthcawl, most will be familiar with Atlantic Hotel on the seafront. For years the staff have been welcoming locals and visitors with hospitality, food and accommodation. During January of this year, the Atlantic Hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment, which brings a fresh, classic and contemporary look to the venue.
GROUP EXECUTIVE CHEF
Alongside the refurbishment, there is a new restaurant, bar and terrace menu with a keen kitchen team to execute tasty dishes. The Atlantic brigade are now headed up by Booth Group Executive Chef, Craig Rigby. Craig oversees and is responsible for the group's menus and the kitchens at other venues, Cae Court Hotel Bridgend and Harbour Bar & Kitchen Porthcawl with new openings in 2019. We had the opportunity to chat with Craig about the various venues and his busy new role. When did you join the company Craig? I joined the company in September 2017 at one of the company’s restaurants, Harbour Bar and Kitchen. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and, with a lot of hard work from all of the team, it is going really well. We have a beautiful restaurant with amazing views, so it makes it a lot easier to enjoy work.
What attracted you to the role? After living in Porthcawl and not having many options at that time to eat out, I felt that it was a fantastic opportunity to bring a totally new bar and food offering to Porthcawl. What is your background? I joined the army at sixteen as an Apprentice Chef and served fourteen years. After leaving the army, I went to work at a local hotel where we were awarded two AA Rosettes. I then moved down to Wales and lived in Penarth. I worked in a couple of different places to try out new things before settling down at my previous job at DeCourceys Manor where I spent six great years. A family run business where everything is made in-house and what I would call proper cooking. I then decided to move to the Harbour for a fresh challenge. I was delighted to be able to bring all of my previous experience and knowledge with me. 68
Congratulations on your new role as Group Executive Chef. How does that make you feel? I am delighted and grateful to Phil and Kate for giving me this opportunity. They have been great - allowing us to try out different ideas and enabling us to do our jobs without too many restrictions. It’s great to have that level of trust. It’s due to their expansion of the Group that I have been able to take on this new role. I must make a special mention to my wife Annie, who puts up with my long hours and evening work. What skills do you think you bring to this new role? I am a good communicator who is willing to listen to what the customer wants. I have no ego. I enjoy teaching people - to enable them to flourish. I am also someone who isn’t afraid to make a decision, even if people don’t always like it.
The qualities I bring are a wealth of experience and knowledge in both fine dining and high volume catering. I really enjoy teaching and mentoring people to be the best they can be; enabling us as a Group to reach the standards we are looking for. What do you hope to achieve in your new role? I am looking forward to us all improving the standards in all the establishments, beginning with the newly refurbished Atlantic Hotel which, in the kitchen, we are taking back to British Classics with a modern twist. The Harbour Kitchen and Bar will have two new Head Chefs, Suzy and Johnny, who will both take on their new roles under my supervision. Cae Court, Bridgend, Phil and Kate’s newest venture, will be fronted by Head Chef Matt who has recently taken up
the position. We are looking to include a Fine Dining Menu there, with a couple of old classics as well. VA L E LIFE FIN D S O UT MO R E
Quick Fire Questions How old are you? I’m 54. Where do you live? Porthcawl. Relationship status? Married to Annie with three daughters and one beautiful granddaughter. What are your hobbies? My granddaughter Millie takes up most of my spare time and, also, I love my golf at Pyle and Kenfig where I am a member. Describe yourself in three words… Honest, reliable, hard-working. 69

With so much information readily available online, clients sometimes ask, “Why should we hire a high street estate agent?” They wonder if they couldn't buy or sell a home through the internet, or regular marketing and advertising channels, without representation - without a “real” estate agent. Of course, it can be done but why would you take the risk?
HRT COWBRIDGE We produce high quality, professionally printed brochures with professional photographs, along with aerial photographs, when appropriate, which can have a great impact on the look of your property
“We are multi-disciplined with a diverse wealth of experience.” Our Service is always professional and personal. We understand that our clients need an agent that they can trust and one that will look after their best interests and not just ours! We are completely independent and not corporate in our approach, focusing wholly on achieving a sale and not distracted by the need to sell other services. Hopefully, you can see how important it is to not only put your trust in a real, local estate agent, but by choosing Herbert R Thomas, you will be in the best possible hands. We asked Robert Calcaterra of popular local estate agents HRT of Cowbridge the reasons why clients appoint them time and time again. We are multi-disciplined with a diverse wealth of experience. As a leading independent firm of property professionals, we offer advice and expertise in every aspect of property related matters. We have built a reputation on offering honest and independent advice. We possess an in-depth local and regional knowledge through our four offices based in Cardiff, Cowbridge, Bridgend and Neath. We pride ourselves on having a strong digital and social media presence. Although we are a traditional firm being established in 1926, we recognise the need for a progressive approach and always keep up with the latest tools and techniques. First impressions last! Fiddes has a long and proud history of producing wood finishes that began during the early part of the last century and continues to this day. Vale Life Magazine talks to owner Robert Fiddes Gooding to find out more.
FIDDES’ FOURTH GENERATION Originally manufacturing paints and distempers to the joinery and building market, founder Alfred Fiddes moved from Bristol to Cardiff to set up a small manufacturing workshop at Trade Street, where he continued to develop and manufacture wood finishes over the next 30 years. Alfred’s son-in-law Robert joined the business at the end of the 2nd World War and seizing a new opportunity, they developed their portfolio with a wider range of specialist wood finishes. By the early 1950’s, FIDDES had become a recognised supplier within the UK’s professional furniture & antique restoration market, providing a complete range of wax polishes, lacquers, shellacs and wood dyes. In the late 1960’s a new, quick-drying wax polish was introduced, that was to lead to the significant development of Supreme Wax Polish several years later.
“FIDDES are proud of their family heritage.”
By the early 1970’s 3rd generation, Ian Fiddes, was instrumental in firmly establishing the FIDDES brand into both the Trade and Retail markets which he achieved with the support of his wife, Elizabeth and a dedicated team, some of whom remain with the company to this day. 1987 saw Rob Fiddes join amidst a rapid expansion of both the antique and new pine furniture markets. This heralded the development and launch of FIDDES Supreme Wax Polish which, as global demand grew, quickly established itself as the international market leader within this sector. Following a fire in 1997 destroying over 70% of the premises, Rob Fiddes took overall control, steering the Company through a tumultuous two-year period of reconstruction. With the development of new markets and an increase in demand for waterborne coatings, research was soon in place to formulate a durable, quick-drying Hard Wax Oil as a viable alternative to the more traditional floor oils currently on the market. 74
A new range of glass coatings was also developed for the sublimation and decorative glass industry and is supplied to various beverage and cosmetic coating plants worldwide. FIDDES are proud of their family heritage and retain a progressive outlook, ensuring a continued policy for investment in manufacturing and technology in the development of their comprehensive range of specialist and traditional wood and floor coatings.
“Fiddes now has a fantastic showroom which is open to the public. Please call in for help and advice.” Fiddes & Son Ltd Florence Works, Brindley Road Cardiff CF11 8TX +44 (0)29 2034 0323 sales@fiddes.co.uk www.fiddes.co.uk

Arthur the Labrador has a strong client following at Vale Solicitors. Directors Michael Morgan,Chris Evans and Jonathan Hewitson are now accustomed to the usual first question from regular clients: “How’s Arthur?”
T HE L AB REPORT $200 MILLION DOLLARS TO THE CAT! Arthur is not the only new face. Llantwit Major boy Nathan Fyfe, with a Masters Degree in Law and all Solicitors Exams successfully under his belt, is now putting his knowledge into practice with us. We are also joined by Jeff Lloyd a Solicitor in the Vale for over 40 years. Together with Associate Solicitor Liz Hunt and soon to be qualified trainee Solicitor Stephanie Kilvington, Arthur is proud to be a member of the Vale Solicitors team. Arthur has noticed that more people are taking out Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and seeking advice on the possible cost of care in the future. If you become ill, Powers of Attorney will make sure that the right people, whom you trust and who know your wishes, can make decisions for you. This includes everything from running your business, selling your home, making decisions about care and life sustaining treatment and most importantly, as far as Arthur is concerned, who will look after your dog.
A properly drafted Will makes sure that your wishes are followed after your death. Arthur was pleased that Karl Lagerfield left $200 million dollars to his cat. Arthur believes that everyone should make proper provision for their pets. At Vale Solicitors we don’t just fill in forms. We discuss your circumstances carefully, confidentially and sensitively and explain everything clearly. If it is difficult for you to attend our offices we can arrange to visit you at home (at no extra charge). We often meet with family groups and are happy to arrange talks to larger groups or Societies. Our clients appreciate this: "Thank you so much for coming out to the house, and at such short notice, and for the lovely way that you explained everything to my parents. It is a relief for my mum that it is done." One final word of warning from Arthur. Beware of cold calling Will Writing Companies. We have seen examples of wholly inappropriate Trust and Will arrangements prepared by one of these companies at exhorbitant cost. 76
These people make Arthur cross as they often are not professionally qualified, do not have indemnity insurance to protect their clients, are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or answerable to the Legal Ombudsman. Arthur says: See a Solicitor First! To meet Arthur and for a free no obligation review of your Will and Power of Attorney requirements please give Vale Solicitors a call.

“We love giving back. Whether it’s with clients or with charity, we love sharing success. Yet, every now and then, it’s nice to get something back. Something that shows we’re making a difference, and we have! In front of 3,500 delegates, Lewis Ballard Accountants won the national ‘100% Xero Award’ at Xerocon 2018 in the Excel London.” Janet Ballard
100% X ERO AWARD It was unbelievable to be recognised as national Xero’s champions, out of so many innovative UK firms!
Bigger firms are using Xero, the world’s greatest cloud accounting software, but we’re using it to its fullest. We use it for all our client accounts and to run our practice work flow. We even had a Christmas Tree with Xero decorations on it! Xero is a dominant gene in the DNA of Lewis Ballard. Why is Xero cloud accounting so important? We live in both a digital age and an age of convenience. Xero is arguably the most innovative platform for businesses and individuals to keep on top of their finances. No wonder we love it so much. It makes your life easier and your business stronger. Big claims we know, but it’s true!
“Thrive in the face of digital change.” 78
With our streamlined process, using Xero and its partner apps, you can access your records on the go, anywhere, and on any device. You have real-time, up-to-date information at your fingertips, so we can help you make timely decisions. You’ll find yourself pouncing on opportunities and dodging disasters that your competitors are blissfully unaware of. We’re Building Brilliant Businesses that prosper whatever challenges arise. Neil Ballard says, in relation to the award and the industry as a whole, “Old school, paper-based accountancy firms are just going to disappear.
This award shows we’re not that kind of firm - we’re the firm moving ahead of rapid changes within the industry. Firms that drag their heels, that only make change when forced to, will find that it’s already too late.
Meanwhile, we’re already operating at a digital friendly capacity and our clients won’t struggle as Making Tax Digital happens. We have provided them with the tools to not only survive, but thrive in the face of digital change.”
But, before this, on 23rd March at 7.30pm at Holland House, we’re holding our 10th Annual Charity Dinner for Velindre Cancer Hospital and really hoping to boost the £125,107.90 we’ve already raised for this amazing charity.
However, with the champagne bottles barely dusty, Lewis Ballard are still looking to the future. Ever keen to help businesses succeed, we recognise that up-to-date is only the starting point. We’re currently launching our forecasting tool 4sight as part of our standard service. Your own digital crystal ball, it seamlessly integrates with your figures in Xero. Not only predicting the future, it shows how to change it too.
A very busy few months ahead! Worried about Making Tax Digital? Want help building a future proof business? Need a better payroll solution? Ring 029 2073 5502 or visit www.lewisballard.co.uk now. We’re waiting to help you. Lewis Ballard Celtic House, Caxton Place Pentwyn, Cardiff CF23 8HA

Searching for the right insurance can sometimes be quite overwhelming, time consuming and stressful. Which cover? What price? The variables are quite literally endless!
IWHY NSURANCE USE A BROKER?
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably enticed by the empowering sales messages of comparison or buy-direct websites. I certainly have been for many years. However, a little trip up recently while claiming made me realise that, with my home and car insurance, I’m playing Russian roulette. In this case, it cost me hundreds of pounds, but it could have so easily been thousands. I realised I was having to make decisions I really wasn’t qualified, or knowledgeable enough, to make and getting little help from the person on the other end of the phone (or screen). Products are being sold on a non-advised basis, and what do I know about insurance? So, having “enjoyed” a negative experience, prior to renewal I decided to approach a broker - in this case Watkin Davies based in Whitchurch. I spoke to Gina Dixon, Managing Director, to find out more.
Gina, why do so many of us turn to the internet? Firstly, you can do it in the comfort of your own home at any time of the day. In this day and age, with demands on our time, it is very enticing, and you don’t have to speak to anyone. You are then driven by a sales pitch always price driven. At no time do they mention advice, because mostly they are non-advised sales. Ultimately, what does the customer really know about insurance? You are gambling with your most valuable assets. The purpose of the broker is to ensure the product is suitable for your needs, giving you confidence and comfort that your assets are covered. Usually you have only one of two options: Either, go on-line and deal direct with an insurer where you will be promised the “best price” or speak to a broker to source the most suitable product. The online companies are very enticing – their messages are, for the most part, driven by the idea that you’re going to save money. 82
Is saving money the priority here though? Yes, receiving a competitive price is most important, but we believe getting the right advice is even more important. On-line aggregators are price comparison sites, not driven by advice but by sales, they will regularly push their cheapest quote to the top of their recommended products for you to buy. This may not always be the best option for you. At Watkin Davies, we will always look at ways of reducing the price but not compromising cover and ensure the client fully understands the cover they have purchased. We also commit to reviewing the clients cover each year, this is to ensure the cover is up to date and price is still competitive. What can customers do if they aren’t confident buying insurance online? Enlist a broker. A broker will act with your best interests at heart, acting as a personal advisor for you, ensuring you receive comprehensive cover for a competitive price.
W A T K I N D AV I E S
What customers say… For over 35 years we have enjoyed an excellent business relationship with Watkin Davies, like ourselves they pride themselves on delivering a first class service to their customers. Their ability to react quickly to our business needs, at very competitive prices, has helped us to grasp opportunities quickly and has helped the long term growth and profitability of our company. We view Watkin Davies as a partner to our business not just a supplier. Ron Skinner & Sons Watkin Davies understands our business' needs and has created an insurance programme that reflects this. It allows us to know that in our specialist areas of work, we have the right cover in place, which allows us to focus on our contracts. We feel confident, that if our needs or activity change, Watkin Davies will be able to manage our risk and advise us effectively. LME (UK) Ltd & Atlantic Pacific Marine Ltd Always a great experience- our preferred broker, always very good at getting us the best cover for a competitive price! K. Bell What type of clients do you look after at Watkin Davies? We advise business and private clients with many different needs. Our Private clients require advice and cover ranging from standard residential buildings and contents to high valued home with private collections. This may include second or holiday homes and unoccupied properties.
Are there any other benefits to working directly with you? Advice is crucial in ensuring the client is fully protected, this is not available via an online aggregator.
How does it work? Do I need to visit your office or can it be handled over the phone? Both - if you live local to us you can pop in or just give us a call. A dedicated advisor at Watkin Davies will be able to guide you through the process so that you avoid the risk of underinsurance or no insurance, they will source you the right cover and product to meet your needs. You may need a home visit, clients with art collections or high valued items may need further advice on security, safes etc.
We ensure clients are placed in the hands of a financially secure company. And don’t let’s forget claims, we are there to hold the client’s hand through the process. We often have clients returning to us having had a poor experience with a claim. They know we will assist them and support them if there are any difficult issues.
“Never compromising on cover.”
When dealing with online offers, does the client always know who they are insured with. Often not, they remember the aggregators name.
After my recent experience buying direct, I’d suggest anyone considering insurance talk to a broker. Yes it’s good to look at comparison sites but you don’t want to end up shooting yourself in the foot. 83

MY VALE LIFE Kris Price lives in Rhoose and is Director of Greenpoint IT Ltd in Barry. When he’s not relaxing with his family, he’s usually performing minor miracles getting broken tech (especially computers and phones) back up and running. Vale Life chatted with Kris at his shop, and company HQ, on Holton Road in Barry. What do you love about The Vale Of Glamorgan? The scenery and beaches. Having plenty of open space to entertain the kids and get out for a run or take the kids out on their bikes at Porthkerry Park. What is your occupation? I don’t think you could put my occupation into one neat box but, if I had to, I would say I’m an IT and Security Engineer. The business was established in 2007 and back then we offered repairs and spares for laptop and PCs. Since then we have expanded with the industry repairing almost all IT related gadgets. Over the past few years of setting up networks and working with local business helping with IT Support we made a conscious effort to do some additional training. We then explored the security industry, due to its huge growth over the past few years, and this has enabled us to create Greenpoint Security.
This has been one of the most exciting decisions I’ve made in business as I’ve always had an interest in security from a young age. I’ve found that a lot of the technology requires lots of principles I’ve learned in IT so the overlap has helped me grow the business quickly. Describe your typical working day… The best part of running my businesses is the variety of work we do. I usually start at the shop on Holton Road just before 9am and check our booking system to see what jobs we have in and make a start on the most urgent repairs. As the day moves on I usually have calls for IT support from some of our business customers needing help with their networks and PCs. These calls vary from remote access five minute jobs to me being needed urgently on site.
“I’m married to my best friend and business partner Kerry. We have two handsome boys and a scruffy little dog called Teddy.” 84
Once the doors close at 5.30pm I’m usually the last to leave and enjoy the peace of being closed to catch up with some paper work and emails while it’s quiet. What do you love about what you do? Definitely the job satisfaction! Whether it’s repairing someone’s mobile device or fixing their computer or games console, the moment you reunite someone with their gadget and see how happy they are to have it back makes all the time spent repairing it worthwhile. With the new business, Greenpoint Security, I equally enjoy making our customers feel more secure in their own home or business. What do you do to relax? I enjoy spending time with my family and getting out in the country side away from computers, this usually involves stopping somewhere nice for a coffee and some cake. Where do you eat out? Favourite food? It’s great to have so much choice in the Vale, I love eating out and trying new places. One of my favourites has to be the Highwayman in Fonmon, the fillet steak kebabs are delicious.

Herbert R Thomas raises money for 2 Wish Upon a Star
HRT hosted a Cake and Coffee Morning in aid of the 2 Wish Upon A Star charity. The staff at our Cowbridge Office baked well in excess of 20 cakes of all varieties which went down a storm by all our very generous friends, family, local residents and clients who attended the jam-packed event. This is the first time that the agents have organised such an event and, judging by the positive feedback, it certainly won’t be the last! The event managed to raise an outstanding £925 by raffling items donated and cake sales. HRT would like to offer a big thank you to all who came and supported them and this wonderful charity. hrt.uk.com

Miss De-Vyliers 2nd Fashion Show Success Miss De-Vyliers held their second wonderful fashion show and their first appearance at Lanelay Hall. They hold shows twice a year to highlight the fashion for the forthcoming season. The boutique is highly community driven and supports two local worthwhile charities 2 Wish Upon A Star and Bosom Pals. Owner Louise would like to thank everyone who bought tickets for the show and helped these worthy causes. All the hard work put in at rehearsals really paid off. The 7 models were superbly compered by local comedic/ acting legend Phil Howe. The audience, fuelled by a glass of Prosecco, clapped along to the music and the show was a huge success. Some of the boutique’s new lines included black or white wrap dresses, gorgeous for dressing up at a wedding or dressed down for a meal and, for the more casual look, flowered/ denim leggings and smart linen dresses, all at great prices.
