Passionate about the Vale We are independent. We live in the Vale. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk is correct and accurate. WELCOME As I write it’s 32 degrees outside and boy is it hot! Nice if you can sit in the park in a whimsical little summer dress, flip flops and sun hat, sipping on something cold and fizzy. Not so nice if you’re chained to your computer as I am writing copy. Ho hum, as the advert says, “it’s your career choice”. If you are out and about in this balmy weather, you’re hopefully in a park reading your copy of Vale Life! This issue brings you lots of interesting articles and ideas on where to go, where to shop and where to eat this summer. On my travels I’ve noticed quite a few new independent businesses opening - The Gallery Restaurant in Barry is re-opening. We welcome Barney and his team back with open arms. They’ve been sorely missed. Hair or Make-Up and Lana Beautique have opened their doors in Penarth, so if you need a make-up lesson as I did, make an appointment with Alli at Hair or Make-Up and she’ll show you how to apply make-up to suit you and your lifestyle (I certainly picked up a few tricks as my photo here shows).

If it’s manis, pedis or waxing, then Lana Beautique is the salon for you. I hope to be able to introduce you to more businesses in the next issue. These new independent businesses, and existing ones, need our support. Let’s spend whatever we can with them and help keep our high streets alive. Enjoy the summer and we’ll see you in the autumn. DINAS POW YS

Dinas Powys outdoor facility is in full swing! Dinas Powys is relishing its great new outdoor gym and play area for all ages on Dinas Powys common. Following two community consultations at the Murch community centre and The Parish Hall, the community council applied for a Pride in our Villages grant from Creative Rural Communities for the new equipment. As a result, there is now a new outdoor gym for all age groups, a new wooden trail and a multi play area including a mini climbing wall and fire pole. Already people are using this great new facility, people are out in the glorious weather exercising on the new out door gym. Young people are testing their agility on the new adventure trail and the play area is packed.

It’s all happening in Peterston Super Ely!

Frangoulis - at the cutting edge

Peterston Super Ely has made huge progress with the opening of its new play area which has been enlarged and updated, the village has also benefitted from new benches in the playing fields and a new community orchard.

Mention the name Frangoulis and the first thing that’ll spring to mind is the shoe repairers in Penarth and Barry.

The community council, Peterston Connect and Peterston Play station have all worked tirelessly to raise funds towards grants from Creative Rural Communities the rural regeneration team within the Vale of Glamorgan Council. The Community council have been instrumental in supporting all projects and recently helped with the tidying up along the river running through the village. The community council are providing a new focus to the village and helping to bind the community together for the next generation. Recent years have seen an influx of new residents, many with young children, and increasing number of grandparents and carers. This ‘regeneration’ of the village has highlighted the tired and outdated play area and made the most of its other natural resources within the village. In January 2012 Creative Rural Communities hosted a community consultation where over 100 residents attended and contributed their ideas on what could improve their village. Since then Peterston Super Ely have not looked back but held sports days, fun runs and village hall events to support their ideas into reality.

They don’t just repair shoes though. They cut keys, supply leather goods and watch batteries and they also offer an engraving service for awards, trophies, shields, memorial plaques, signs, badges and Zippo lighters. They also offer all aspects of dancewear including balletwear, tap and ballroom shoes, from designers including Roch Valley, Freed, Arabesque, Zone, Milano, Katz and Topline. Local communities access cinema showings Following the success of Cowbridge’s Big Screen and demand from other smaller villages in the Vale, Creative Rural Communities (CRC), the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Rural Regeneration team has just launched the Vale Rural Cinema… a chance for local communities to access cinema showings in local venues. In response to this demand CRC have purchased mobile cinema equipment that can be transported to various locations around the rural Vale to show films to the local community. CRC recognise that rural communities in the Vale have to travel far to access the big multiplexes, plus travel and refreshments can make the experience very expensive! However, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for local cinema showings to compete with these large multiplexes… the key to their success is offering something different to viewers, something more sociable, relaxed and affordable. ❧ 9 ❧

Two villages, Llancarfan and Dinas Powys, have taken advantage of this opportunity of free equipment hire and are running monthly cinema showings at local venues which are proving to be a real hit! Please contact Mari-Wyn Elias-Jones from CRC if you’d like to set up a similar venture in your village (01446 704637 or mwelias-jones@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk)

Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what a recent Trip Advisor customer from Cardiff had to say, “A good mixture of menu and specials. Plenty on your plate. Good choice of wines and ales. Always easy to eat at and nothing out of the box but when you do not feel like cooking, it is a place you can go to at the last minute during the week and get a very decent meal, with a good choice.” They may have gone for the fresh beer battered cod, home-made faggots, the chef’s turkey curry or the popular Sunday lunch of beef, pork, chicken or turkey with five different varieties of veg, two types of potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, but they were a very happy customer. There aren’t that many restaurants today that can boast twenty years in business, so it was with great excitement and anticipation that we headed off to spend an afternoon with Hilary and Peter Rice of The Huntsman, Dinas Powys as they celebrated this great milestone.

PAUSE FOR CELEBRATION Hot sunshine and blue skies greeted us, as did our hosts with a welcoming glass of champagne. Guests were already sat in the garden enjoying a glass of Pimms, soaking up the rays. Some of them from Dinas and nearby villages, some from afar afield as Manchester, all here though to celebrate with their friends and fellow frequenters of the restaurant. No sooner than we made friends with guests than the warm savouries arrived. Mini Welsh rarebit, mushroom vol-auvents, asparagus and cheese tart and brie, basil and cherry tomato tarts were all devoured with great gusto. The pastry was as light as can be and the fillings very moreish. We then moved on to the sandwiches with fillings of south Uist hot smoked salmon with crème fraiche and dill, cheddar cheese and rhubarb chutney and home baked ham and wholegrain mustard and egg mayonnaise and rocket.

The trio of musicians were the perfect accompaniment on this day, which coincided with Andy Murray winning his first Wimbledon title. We were then served freshly baked scones with homemade mixed berry preserve and Cornish clotted cream and an assortment of cakes which included Welsh cakes, chocolate brandy cake, summer fruit tartlets, cream filed meringues and lavender shortbread topped with raspberries and cream. A selection of teas and coffee finished off easily one of the most perfect afternoon teas I’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling. Peter and Hilary couldn’t have made their guests any more welcome and we all agreed that we were looking forward to many more opportunities to sample both Hilary’s cooking and the couple’s hospitality. You too can enjoy a Champagne afternoon tea at The Huntsman for just £20 per head for parties of 8 to 30.

I haven’t yet had the pleasure of sampling one of their famous gourmet dinners but, if rumours are to be believed, they’re not to be missed. With champagne and canapés on arrival, an eight course dinner with a taster glass of dessert wine with dessert and taster glass of port with cheese course, all for £49 per head, Friday 19th and 26th of July, I’ve no doubt these will soon be fully booked. If it’s not too soon to be talking about Christmas, and it’ll be here before we know it, then I can announce that the Christmas party menu has now been confirmed. At £28.95 for five courses of fabulous food in a friendly, intimate environment, you won’t find anywhere better to enjoy your Christmas lunch or party. Outdoor cooking has never been more popular with an estimated 18.5million UK adults owning a barbecue.

FLAME!

I WANT TO GRILL FOREVER Often when we are asked to create summer dinner parties and even weddings, barbecues are often requested. There is something unique about a sizzling feast in the sun, but people often lack a taste of adventure when barbecuing. It is easy to pop sausages and burgers on the grill, but it can become monotonous over time. For something different, why not try these marinated seafood recipes. Marinating not only adds great flavour, it also protects the ingredients against high grill temperatures. They provide a refreshing and tasty twist on the norm and thankfully, take just minutes to prepare! Spiro Borg

Barney Hibbert has reopened The Gallery restaurant in Barry after a sabbatical - which is a neat way of saying he went walkabout in the Cotswolds, learned about beer production and set up a rather large restaurant in Cardiff Bay...

CREATIVE COOKING! “We are also the only restaurant in Cardiff and the Vale in The Sustainable Restaurant Association,” he exclaims with much pride. He’s even offering Riverside Market Garden vegetable boxes for collection every Friday. Talking about sustainability I ask if Barry, or the Vale for that matter, can sustain The Gallery. “I hope to have a full, neighbourhood eatery that the locals can be proud of. Community is incredibly important to us,” he says. Time will tell, but this is a restaurant that deserves to do well. I’d eaten at The Gallery first time round and it was superb. Now, if it’s possible, it’s even better. There’s a maturity to the kitchen and the cooking which has enhanced what was already very good. Barney’s an enigma. The Gallery is an enigma! It shouldn’t be where it is. Barry has never been known as the culinary centre of the Vale so when, several years ago, The Gallery opened to much acclaim, eyebrows were raised. Those same eyebrows were raised even higher when, out of the blue, he closed it.

The one thing that shines through is his passion for local produce and local suppliers. His face lights up when he talks about The Gallery’s homemade cooking, the rustic style, the local ingredients. Yes there are the pretty, playful dishes, but nothing too indulgent and everything is cooked with the greatest integrity.

Barney originally wanted to be an architect but sitting in front of a computer was not for him so he became a chef instead. I press him about the closure. He’s considered and candid in his response, “I always say if you’re not enjoying the process, what’s the point? Sometimes small is beautiful and business direction can never be guided by a committee. We were doing well! It was a family decision to close and it was correct at the time.” He adds, with a smile, “Anyway, I’m older, uglier and ready to go again!”

I like The Gallery’s friendliness. It’s relaxed, informal - you can pop in for a beer, a coffee or cocktail. Front of house is ably managed by Ben and Kinga who have the same calming, quiet confidence. No drama, no pretence, just great service and really good food - it’s everything you want from a restaurant. As they say on television, you’ve got to eat here. There will charity dinners happening regularly - the first is on Thursday 19th of September in aid of Ty Hafan. Drinks, canapés, then a four course dinner by Welsh Michelin starred chef James Sommerin plus a special auction should be an excellent evening. Enjoy al fresco dining at The Bear Hotel As soon as someone says “let’s eat outdoors”, our spirits lift. Our imaginations fire and we see vibrant salads, breads and olives and something bubbly to drink.

There’s no better way to sample the delights of al fresco dining than at The Bear in Cowbridge. It probably has the best seats in the High Street for people watching and catching some rays. If you like eating outside but perhaps prefer a shadier spot, then don’t forget there’s a courtyard at the rear of the hotel.

If you fancy a spot of breakfast (The Bear’s home-cooked breakfast from £4.25 is worth mentioning here) or a coffee, a light lunch or perhaps a delicious cream tea (you must try theirs at £7.95 per person), then The Bear can tick all of the boxes. There’s free parking too at the rear of the hotel. The Bear Hotel 63 High Street, Cowbridge CF71 7AF 01446 774814 enquiries@bearhotel.com www.bearhotel.com Follow on Facebook and Twitter

Oscars of Cowbridge The perfect venue

While away some well earned ‘me time’ at this contemporary eaterie on Cowbridge’s busy High Street. Best be there early for morning coffee (or something stronger if your heart so desires) to grab one of the outside tables and do a spot of people watching.

The menu is varied and imaginative. If you’re of the vegetarian persuasion, following the overwhelming popularity of their Very Vegetarian Nights, the team at Oscars have decided to make every Wednesday a Veggie Wednesday. Say goodbye to boring and say hello to gourmet vegetarian recipes.

An awning provides ample shade for newspaper or Kindle reading. It’s the perfect venue to catch up with your own thoughts or with friends, colleagues or the family. Should all of the tables outside be taken, don’t dismay, there are more inside and a sweet, shaded area to the rear.

It’s all about the view (and the food) When you fancy a latte and a piece of cake, a home cooked breakfast or a light lunch then there are plenty of cafe’s around where you can get this. If you want one with undoubtedly the best view in town, then the only café to visit is Romilly’s.

“All food is freshly prepared and served on fine bone china.” With views directly overlooking The Knap park and lake and its shabby chic interior, it’s no wonder that it’s a firm favourite for local residents and visitors to the area. Get there early enough and you might be able to bag one of the tables at the front of the cafe, perfect for those views and for people watching. If not, don’t worry, there’s lots of extra space in the pretty courtyard to the rear. All food is freshly prepared and served on fine bone china, which always makes things taste better! You must try their homemade cakes – a firm favourite. ❧ 18 ❧

Fonmon Castle, in the picturesque Vale of Glamorgan, might be an obvious choice for a wedding venue but it’s not widely known that the castle can be booked for a host of other occasions.

PERFECT SETTING Vale Life chats to Director, Aliki Currimjee about what’s on offer at this historic, thirteenth century venue. What type of events can Fonmon Castle cater for? Every event you could possibly imagine. From birthday or anniversary parties, to product launches, team-building events, afternoon teas and Christmas parties. Why should people consider Fonmon Castle for their event? Our beautiful, ancient venue carries more than 800 years of Welsh history and unlike many venues, guests always enjoy exclusive use of the house and its grounds ensuring that the only faces you see are those in your party. With a choice of rooms, Fonmon Castle is a very flexible venue and can accommodate an intimate party or a much larger affair. Guests always comment that, whilst the castle is a very grand house it is, after all, still a family home and has a personal charm that’s quite unexpected.

What do you think makes it so special? Partly the grandeur of the available rooms which are filled with family art and antiques. The double height hall provides a dramatic backdrop to greet your guests and, later, the parquet floor is perfect for dancing. The drawing room and bar, with direct access to the lawns beyond, provide an elegant suite of rooms, perfect for any occasion. Lady Anne’s room overlooking the lawns is ideal for smaller dinners and receptions. Finally, at the end of the Gallery you reach the beautiful heart of Fonmon Castle, the library, a delicate and light-filled room that still houses a priceless book collection. Secondly, we always go the extra mile to make your visit personal and special, including perhaps using a sword to cut your birthday cake or even flying your football team’s flag from the tower! Tell us about the grounds Just beyond the beautiful gardens, is a large area of parkland, suitable for a wide range of events or team building.

“Our beautiful, ancient venue carries more than 800 years of Welsh history.” Fonmon is the proud host of the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Show, held annually in August, and which regularly attracts 25,000 people and, earlier this year, we also hosted the Welsh Summer Country Fair. What about smaller events? The castle and gardens are also available for hire for smaller events, both private and corporately hosted, using a flexible combination of the building and its extensive grounds. We have hosted many varied events such as family fun days, wedding fayres, cooking courses, garden parties and classical concerts Can you organise catering? We are delighted to be working with the Really Fresh Food Company who offer bespoke options to our clients. They have a reputation for excellence and providing fantastic catering for our customers and also for our family celebrations here at Fonmon. Aliki Currimjee

The champagne’s chilled, it’s a beautiful summer’s evening in Cardiff’s beautiful Morgan Arcade and Russell Scott Lawson and his team at Hawkes Essentials wait patiently and, perhaps, a little pensively for their first guests to arrive.

SMART THINKING Russell says Hawkes Essentials has been twenty years in the making. The completion of phase two, the ground floor, after the major works undertaken to completely revamp downstairs over nine months ago has been a long time coming.

OnRoute shirts will join iconic British brand Crombie at Hawkes Essentials this autumn and Russell has a few more irons in the fire and, as we made our way to Lab 22 for cocktails, I thought the whole evening summed up Hawkes Essentials and Russell’s attitude to pretty much everything he does give it 110% and never compromise.

The fact that Hawkes Essentials is an independent retailer makes the achievement even more impressive. Big chains throw money quite effortlessly at refits every five years but, for independents, it takes a serious investment in not only cash but of time and energy, both physical and emotional. Bottom line, it’s a risk. But Russell’s uncompromising standards and unwavering belief and desire to make Hawkes Essentials better, even when it already stands head and shoulders above many high street smart brands, is something to be admired there’s no such thing as ‘that’ll do’ at Hawkes Essentials.

Nigel Hall and Crombie will be the latest additions to the Hawkes armoury this autumn and, coupled with the uncompromising service you’ll receive at Hawkes from all the staff, they’ll be well worth a visit. As we sipped ice cold champagne and nibbled canapés, we chatted with many of Russell’s customers and friends. We got a sense of what it is that makes Hawkes Essentials such a great shop and why it inspires such loyalty from customers. Everyone talked about the quality of service - how nothing is too much trouble, how they go the extra mile. They love the brands. ‘Russell has an eye for detail’ they said but, more than that, he understands his customers. Many said that he just has an uncanny knack of putting pieces together - a great shirt, a smart jacket, a stunning pair of shoes. They talked about fit but mostly they talked about quality. The brands Russell stocks are selected very carefully and more will soon enter the fold. ❧ 24 ❧

“Apologies are extended to all who were not invited to our refurbishment event, but please be assured that you will be invited to the next bash as the evening will be repeated in September for the autumn/winter launch. Special thanks to all who are supporting Hawkes and to Deborah Haines and the Lab22 boys for making the night an enjoyable one for all.” Russell Scott-Lawson Hawkes Essentials 37-39 Morgan Arcade Cardiff CF10 1AF 029 2037 3780 www.hawkesessentials.com Follow on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube

The Cardiff Pointe development has to be one of the most exciting developments in South Wales for a decade. With plans for over 600 residential properties bordering the Cardiff Sports Village and views across the bay and Penarth Marina, Cardiff Pointe will no doubt be one of the city’s most sought after locations.

TO THE POINTE Vale Life met with Lydia Seymour at the marketing suite to find out more about this exciting project.

What type of housing is being built? There is a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and four and five bedroom houses being built within this first phase. All are contemporary new designs from Cardiff-based architects Scott Brownrigg. Who do you think the properties will appeal to? There is a diverse range of homes so there is something for everyone. Prices range from £175,000 for the two bedroom Caravel apartment right through to £750,000 for the impressive five/six bedroom spacious water-fronted Brigantine executive family home. Will there be any social housing involved in the project? The development will bring many social benefits to the area including the provision of significant off-site affordable and split-tenure property. Who will be marketing the properties? The launch of Cardiff Pointe and initial sales are being handled by a select team that includes agents Allen & Harris (part of the Sequence Group nationwide). The on-site Marketing Suite is open Thursday to Monday, 10am until 5pm. The developer has invested in higher specification fixtures and fittings, can you tell us more about this? To quote from the brochure, “Great care and attention to detail has been taken in ensuring the new homes at Cardiff Pointe are finished to the highest possible standards of specification and designed exclusively by Figurehead Homes and Scott Brownrigg.”

German Rational kitchens designed by Cardiff based Spacefittingfurniture, contemporary bathrooms designed by Porcelanosa, energy-efficient windows plus hi-tech security mean that buyers will enjoy a level of finish and design to match the stunning location. How many homes and being built and what type? Phases one and two feature 98 homes Plots 1 to 99 (there’s no number 13!). There is a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and four and five bedroom houses being built within this first phase. All are beautiful new designs from Scott Brownrigg architects. What facilities will be on site and when are these planned? There are already a range of incredible facilities on site, including the worldclass Cardiff International White Water Rafting Centre, the international pool with its fantastic fitness suite, Cardiff Ice Arena, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club plus food and retail shopping, restaurants and pubs right on the doorstep. In future, these facilities will be complemented by two Olympicstandard ice pads, the snow dome, retail, restaurants and leisure facilities and a six-star hotel. Have any been sold so far? Interest in the properties has been excellent - a stunning waterfront Barque five bedroom home was reserved within an hour of launching Cardiff Pointe. We’ve had considerable interest in the full range of available properties already. What impact do you think this development mean to Cardiff and specifically Cardiff Bay? What benefits will it bring? Cardiff Pointe is helping to create a new destination in Cardiff - one that underlines Cardiff's status as a worldclass city and reinforces the importance of Cardiff Bay as an integral part of that. ❧ 26 ❧

We have five fitting teams, four office staff and shop floor personnel. All in all our staff total twenty one people. Is it a family run business? No, although we do consider ourselves as family as we are such a small team of people, many of which have been here from anywhere between three and eighteen years What services do you offer? We cover a wide range of services to all sectors including leisure, hotel, restaurant, schools & hospitals. Our range of services include bespoke staircases, balustrade, glass/mirror work, fire glass stockist, acoustic glazing, supply and install of aluminium, wood and UPVC framework - anything that has a glass requirement we can provide.

Who are your customers? Our customer base is mainly commercial, however we also supply a domestic service. Our main customers are Whitbread whose brands include Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre, Costa Coffee and Beefeater. In 2010 we were asked by Whitbread to assist in reducing the need for secondary glazing in their new build hotels. We started testing at Salford University and designed a toolkit of glazing products which satisfies the need of every new build acoustically with our own patented product, Premierfon, which achieves an acoustic performance of your average brick wall. JD Wetherspoon are another major client which we service throughout the UK on new projects, one of our most recent and largest projects for them included design and build of a bespoke glass staircase and glass walkway at The Mount Stuart, Cardiff Bay.

We have been involved with Whitbread over the past year in developing the exciting new generation of ‘hub’ rooms by Premier Inn. These include state of the art glass bathroom cubicles, with glass shower enclosures, glass walls and our acoustic aluminium window frame. These inner city projects will roll out throughout 2014 and see us again at the forefront of the innovation in assisting with making these reality. What makes Abbey Glass special? We feel that we provide a unique service to the construction industry through working with the architects from the start of each project and delivering solutions to their problems or assisting them to achieve their goals. We pride ourselves as a team, dedicated to our clients in getting it right, first time every time. The people here have grown along with the company and are passionate about going that extra mile to give the service and quality that we truly believe can be a struggle to find in our Industry Do you support any local charities? I believe it’s important to give something back into the community and that’s why Abbey Glass are happy to support The Tom Maynard Trust. The Trust helps the development of aspiring disadvantaged cricketers and other sportspeople who require support with different aspects of their career development, including bursaries; help with training and education, financial support for overseas placements and assistance with kit and equipment. As I write this, sat in the Cornerhouse Tearooms in Llantwit Major, we’re in the middle of a heat wave, so the last thing you might consider at this point in the summer is the installation of a log burner, but you’d be wrong.

HOTTER THAN JULY Yes, as I write this, it’s warm (pushing 28 degrees) but, sadly, it isn’t going to be like this several months from now and, it’s at that point, you’ll be wishing you had one of those lovely wood burning stoves. How do I know this? Simply because last year my gas fire was on the blink and, quite frankly, when I could get it to work it was costing me an arm and a leg - and I’m not talking your Keira Knightly type skinny limbs here. If gas bills alone aren’t enough to make you want to make the switch and invest, then lifestyle surely will. There’s nothing nicer and more homely than the sight of real flames. It’s definitely mood-enhancing and even this summer, on some of the chillier evenings, we’ve thrown on a couple of logs and sat with our patio doors open enjoying a nice glass of vino.

So what’s the cost of this wood-fuelled enhancement to your lifestyle? Prices can vary wildly locally and, if you’re tempted to go online, don’t - it’s a minefield, and you’re unlikely to find someone who will install your fire as well as supply it. After much deliberation we chose The Stove Room, in Barry, for several reasons: ■ Price - like-for-like they seemed fairly priced. ■ Range - they have an excellent range on offer. ■ Advice and expertise - they certainly seemed genuinely interested in making sure we had the right product for our requirements. ■ Installation - it was important to us to have one company supply and install. That way we knew that we had just one call to make if there were any problems. ■ Aftercare - as The Stove Room are local we knew that we could call on them if there were any issues later.

“Our wood burner (which can also burn coal) has been a real dream. It’s changed our room and definitely enhanced our lifestyle.” Most importantly, we chose The Stove Room because of owner Carlton’s reputation. When we were researching who to buy from, Carlton’s name came up several times and, each time, it was all good. So we had a survey and despite our flue needing a couple of tricky twists and turns, we ordered a pretty Merlin fire. Incidentally, Merlin is a British manufacturer so if you want to buy British this manufacturer ticks that particular box. As it happened, our ‘challenging’ installation was completed promptly and within budget. Our wood burner (which can also burn coal) has been a real dream. It’s changed our room and definitely enhanced our lifestyle and, to top it all, it’s actually reducing our utility bills. In fact, we like it so much, we’ve ordered another to replace a fire in another room in the house - it really is that good. So, when autumn and winter rolls in, we’re going to be toasty warm, just as we are now.

When thinking of adding a room to their home, most people consider a traditional conservatory build, but if you want to bring outside living in and inside living out, then an orangery is the perfect option. Vale Life spoke to Sam and Lorna Marshall of Lisvane, Cardiff about their home’s transformation.

EASY LIVING

How did you hear about Vale Orangeries? I was sitting in a Chinese Takeaway in Cardiff waiting for my food and picked up a copy of City Life. Lorna, (my wife) and I had been thinking about extending out at the back of the house and maybe doing something with the kitchen. I came across an advertisement for Vale Orangeries. Their approach seemed fresh and different. I took the magazine home along, with the crispy duck, and we called them about two weeks later.

Why did you choose Vale Orangeries? We decided to speak with Dean and Leanne before extending our search. We liked the look of the work they had completed elsewhere and once we had our first meeting I think we both knew that we wanted to work with them on this project. The approach and professionalism that they brought to that meeting impressed us so much that we decided that we did not have to look elsewhere as long as the price was right… and it was! What did they bring to the brief? All of the major improvements that we have made to the house have been supplied by the same company and we have always been impressed with the quality of work and service received. However, this time we felt we needed something different. Dean and Leanne brought our project to life. Their imagination was invaluable. You got the feeling that they wanted to do the very best job for you and not just sell you something that ‘would do’. ❧ 36 ❧

We appreciated their honesty and liked the idea they would be involved with the ongoing project management. We were also able to confirm, by talking with friends who had undergone similar builds, that the cost per square foot for the building was very competitive compared to the company we used in the past. We gave them a couple of options but I think we all knew that we would end up going for the more ambitious of the two. Dean and Leanne listened to what we had to say and came back with drawings and suggestions. They are both artistic people and what they came back with certainly enhanced our original thinking and although we could not envision what the final build would look like, they gave us the confidence to proceed and the opportunity to view some of the other projects that they had recently delivered. This personal approach is in my opinion Vale Orangeries greatest strength.

“The room has become our main living space!” The guys were conscientious and very tidy and the quality of workmanship was superb. Our only complaint was that we did not budget enough for tea, sugar, milk and chocolate biscuits! Planning Permission took about six weeks and the build plus the little extras we asked for along the way took around five months. There was a small snag list which is inevitable with such a large project but they were dealt with quickly and efficiently. Are you happy with the result? We are delighted with the end result. It has transformed the house and we have had nothing but compliments from our friends on the quality of the build and space that has been created. The room has become our main living space! The kitchen is transformed and it has created a much better social environment when we have friends or family around for dinner. The room is in constant use during the day and the newly created patio area allows us to catch the last rays of sunshine on a summer evening.

What did the project entail? The project ended up being an Orangery that ran the length of the back of the house, incorporating a new kitchen, all in an open plan format. The room is now part kitchen, part dining room and part sitting room. It sounds strange but it works….imagination is a wonderful thing. There was also some significant garden and patio work incorporated in to the project.

Were you happy with how the project went? Yes, we were delighted with how the project came together. Dean and Leanne were always available to us. The guys had some horrendous weather conditions to deal with but they got there in the end. All trades worked as a team and when we wanted to alter a few things along the way, it was never a problem.

What difference has it made to the way you live? Our lounge is now only in use for watching television, our old dining room has been turned in to a play room for the grandchildren. We can have all the family round and get thirteen people to sit down together for Christmas dinner without feeling cramped and the positive changes that we made to the garden has increased our summer entertainment options. Would you be happy to recommend Vale Orangeries to others? It goes without saying that we would recommend Vale Orangeries to anyone who is thinking of adding an orangery/conservatory type of extension to their home. What you get is innovative and sensitive design, high quality workmanship, great customer service and the personal touch that you cannot get with national suppliers, all this and at a sensible price as well. Co-owner of Scarlet Knight, Charlotte began her hairdressing career in 2007 and, having come from two generations of hairdressers, has a deep passion for hairdressing. She trained in a 5 star salon in Pontyclun before moving on to a Cowbridge salon to further her knowledge and expertise.

SCARLET KNIGHT She has achieved numerous awards for competitive hairdressing, including First place in the World Skills Wales 2011 competition, followed by a ‘Highly Commended’ medal in the UK final in London, First place in the National Hairdressers’ Federation’s Newcomers Awards 2011, and Second place at the Student of the Year Awards 2011. Her trophies now take pride of place in the salon. From the very beginning of her career, Charlotte has had a keen passion for wedding and occasion hair and it’s no coincidence that many of her awards have been achieved in this field. Making brides and their bridesmaids feel special on their big day is what makes Charlotte so passionate about this service. John began hairdressing in 2005 in a top Cardiff salon where he trained and qualified. He was then offered a job in a Cowbridge salon where he worked as a leading stylist for a further four years.

Many fashion shows, including the NHF and Cowbridge Fashion Week, have benefitted by having John’s creativity and expertise on board to provide some beautifully styled models. John works on both ladies and gents hair but is particularly skilled in gents styling. He has extensive knowledge and experience in designing on-trend looks and has a keen eye for detail. The salon’s other team members, Bethan and Alexandra, are both highly trained to provide fantastic customer service. Bethan has great vision when styling hair and is also a talented colourist. Alexandra, who began her apprenticeship with the salon in November 2012, is a natural when it comes to colouring and works hard to keep the salon’s online presence current, with the latest looks and offers regularly updated on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Scarlet Knight’s philosophy is that they are more than just a hairdressing service; they are stylists who tailor each of their services to suit their clients’ specific needs, taking into account their lifestyle, age, skin tone and hair type. Clients come from the local surrounding areas such as Talbot Green, Llantrisant and the Rhondda valleys to experience the salon’s relaxing atmosphere, with its sophisticated decor and top-of-therange equipment. Scarlet Knight also have clients from further afield including Bridgend, Cowbridge and the Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Newport and even Monmouth.

“Owning a salon has been a shared dream for both John and Charlotte for many years, but the dream became a reality in September 2012 on the opening of Scarlet Knight Hairdressing.” ❧ 38 ❧

Why Talbot Green? Both Charlotte and John agree that Talbot Green is an area that they know through and through. Having lived in Llantrisant all of her life, Charlotte was able to introduce this vibrant area to John, who, after having lived there for two years, is now completely enamoured with everything Talbot Green provides.

The salon strives to use only the best products and firmly promotes healthy hair by using sulphate, paraben and ammonia free products wherever possible in the form of LaBiosthetique Colour, an international top-class hair colouring system. For their in- salon treatments and styling they use L’ANZA products. So, what makes Scarlet Knight special? Not only do they believe they offer more than just an excellent hairdressing service, they also provide a touch of class and affordable luxury. They offer massaging chairs at the wash basins, Indian head massages and luxury refreshments including homemade cakes.

“Earn Treat Points with every visit, which can be used on salon services or products.”

Their innovative new ‘loyalty scheme’, which rewards clients for visiting the salon, offers clients a Treat Card - their very own key fob that is uniquely linked to them. Clients can earn Treat Points with every visit, which can be used on salon services or products. ❧ 39 ❧

MUMMEBABY

Tatiana Mela BA, RM, IBCLC talks to us about the care and support she provides.

Is it just about the mothers? It’s also about the partners who are vital and whose participation is invaluable. Who better to provide relief and give care and support throughout pregnancy and childbirth than a loving partner? It is a family event and all of my workshops and care packages are designed to include the partner, father or member of the family and empower them with knowledge and techniques for this unique role. I can design a programme so that your individual needs and expectations are met.

Each year thousands of babies are safely born in the hands of midwives and doctors within the NHS but still many women have fears and anxieties around their expectations of giving birth and are looking for alternatives. Having a baby is such an important event in any woman’s life, what’s needed is peace of mind, support and understanding during pregnancy, birth and the period immediately after. Mummebaby aims to complement the existing care provision for women and help the smooth transition from being a couple to becoming the beautiful family you always wanted.

What can you provide for the expectant mother? Mummebaby can provide a range of support throughout pregnancy, birth and during the postnatal period. Running a range of workshops and care packages, such as Hypnobirthing, Pregnancy Massage, Partners Sharing Pregnancy, Infant Feeding, Tongue Tie assessment, treatment and follow up; Baby Massage, Antenatal and Postnatal exercise and relaxation classes. What is Hypnobirthing and why do more and more women opt for this? Hypnobirthing is an enjoyable and informative childbirth education programme that teaches deep relaxation, visualization and selfhypnosis. Being physically and psychologically prepared promotes a calmer pregnancy and a safer, easier and more comfortable birth. The benefits include shorter birthing without fear, more comfort and control over your body and your birth, reduced chances for medical interventions, highly energized mums following birth, stronger bonding with your baby and a valued birthing companion. Hypnobirthing babies are getting higher APGAR scores; they do not cry but smile straight from birth and have better sleeping and feeding behaviours. ❧ 40 ❧

What are your qualifications? I am a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and BA Physical Culture and Sports. I provide comprehensive midwifery care alongside that of my NHS work to women in Cardiff and the surrounding areas. I am a private Lactation Consultant in Infant Feeding and Tongue tie Specialist in Wales and South West England and can offer professional advice and support to new mothers and these practices are covered by the Medical Deference Union (MDU). The care received from me is truly personalised, supportive and informative. All your needs and desires will be discussed and respected. What advice would you give to future parents? Love and communicate with your unborn baby right from the day you know you are pregnant. Be positive about the way you look and your body changes as pregnancy advances. You conceive in love, you can give birth in love! Make healthy choices - it is the best investment in your life and the future generation! Since taking on their first property in January 2013, Holiday Cottages now have a fantastic collection of properties across Wales. We recently caught up with Managing Director, James Morris, to hear more about their expanding portfolio.

COTTAGE INDUSTRY We also developed websites in both French and German for our overseas customers, to make finding the perfect cottage even easier! We have in-house marketing, design and web development teams working tirelessly to bring our customers and owners the very best experience, whether they are booking a holiday or letting a property. Last year we were awarded Best Accommodation Website by Travolution - our award-winning website received more than four million visitors last year, and our properties have a presence on many other websites which maximises exposure. Even though our portfolio and team has grown over the years, we still strive to maintain the family values that are at the heart of Holiday Cottages. What do you love most about Wales? I love the beautiful bays, the majestic mountains and, of course, the sweeping valleys. You have to love your work and I think it helps if we love the areas of the country we let in. Tell us a little bit about Holiday Cottages? We are a family run business and have been successfully letting properties across Wales and the South West’s popular holiday destinations for more than 35 years. Recently, we have expanded our portfolio across the rest of the UK, and currently have an expanding collection of over 1,500 holiday cottages. How are you expanding your Welsh portfolio? We have a dedicated Regional Manager for Wales, Emily, who travels all across Wales meeting with potential owners and works to build long-term relationships with our property owners. We invest a lot in promoting our properties and use a sophisticated, proven formula to promote them.

What can holidaymakers expect from a Welsh cottage holiday? Expect a warm welcome. You’ll soon fall in love with the local food and drink and ancient traditions just as much as the stunning landscape. Secondly, you will be guaranteed some spectacular sights. From the stunning beaches of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, to the emerald beauty of Wales’ three National Parks, and up in the white capped mountains of Snowdon, you’ll be blown away by the magnificent views. I always pack my sturdy walking boots so that I can get out and explore as much of this beautiful country at every opportunity. What sets you apart from other holiday cottage companies? We move with the times; technology is advancing at pace, and understanding the ways holidaymakers search for their cottage breaks has changed. Browsing with tablets and mobile phones is a much more user-friendly experience these days, and with this in mind, at the end of last year and early this year we launched our apps for both iPhone and Android.

“You’ll soon fall in love with the local food and drink and ancient traditions just as much as the stunning landscape.” ❧ 43 ❧

All of our properties are still personally inspected by a dedicated team of managers and we work hard to develop and nurture continuing relationships between the company and our property owners.

A CUT ABOVE One of the best ways to choose a new hair or beauty salon is by asking around. Have your friends or colleagues had a new hair cut or manicure and pedicure that you think is fabulous? I’ve been known to stop ladies in the street if I see a hairstyle, nail colour or brows that I admire. What makes a great salon can be different for everyone, and each and every stylist or therapist has different skills. By asking around, you’ll find out all you need. Is the salon clean and tidy? At the end of their two year course, the fashion and retail design students at the University of South Wales in Cardiff put on a lavish fashion show at The Welsh Museum of Cardiff, called Platform 13, collaborating with established fashion and retail brands, models and businesses in the beauty industry. This gives them invaluable experience for when they start their careers.

BLU HAIR DESIGN

One of the businesses the University were keen to work with was Blu Hair Design, Penarth. Sophie and Bethan were chosen to work alongside the Sebastian Cult Team to achieve the look on all of the models for the show. “We were asked to do an up-do and went in on a Monday for a demonstration of the look that was needed and then had a time limit to work in pairs to achieve the same look on thirty models. The pressure was on, it was an amazing experience,” said Sophie.

Bethan

“We were delighted to be chosen,” said Bethan. “The inspiration of the look was the shine line which was also the feature, it waved up the dome shaped hair with a roughed up matt finish on the dome shape.” Alexis Williams and Hayley Williams, owners of Blu Hair Design, are keen for staff members to participate in events, fashion shows and fashion photoshoots as it gives them additional confidence, and helps raise the profile of the salon. They are also keen for the salon to give back to the community and help young, talented stylists of the future, like those from the University, gain invaluable experience. ❧ 53 ❧

Penarth resident Stephanie Davey has named her new nail bar and beauty salon after the femme fatale Lana Turner - Lana Beautique - (it also happens to be her middle name) and promises her clients all the glamour of her iconic namesake.

TRIED & TESTED The gel overlays that I had lasted almost four weeks and by the fourth week they looked as good as when I’d first had them done. This is the perfect place to forget urban stresses and unwind in gorgeous surroundings. How do you think the salon will benefit Penarth? Manicures and pedicures are so readily available that it’s easy to forget they can be as luxurious as a hot stone massage or skin-saving facial; it doesn’t need to just be a simple file and polish at a nail bar in a department store. Lana Beautique really is the place to go for more than just your average mani/pedi. I’ve noticed a few new businesses open in the town recently – high quality ones – which can only be great for the town and its residents. You can easily spend a morning or an afternoon here, browsing through the independent boutiques and gift shops and there are some lovely cafés and restaurants here too.

Since the salon’s official opening this month, Steph has not failed to deliver on her promises. We chat to happy customer, Victoria Jones, and find out why she’s such a fan.

Who carries out your treatments? Steph, who owns the salon. I love the pictures of Lana Turner around the salon – and it’s very glamorous just like its Hollywood (and Penarth) namesake.

How did you hear about Lana Beautique? Through Twitter; there was a lot of buzz on there leading up to, and following, their launch and so I was intrigued by that.

What do you think of the service? Fabulous - Steph and her team are all so welcoming and I love that I’m treated like a Hollywood star here myself!

What made you choose to go there? I went to their launch and loved the salon as soon as I saw it. There’s a lovely welcoming and calming feel to it and their Arabian pedicure lounge is beautiful. I was very keen to try out their Bio Sculpture Gel nails as I’ve heard so much about them but not many salons in this area have it yet. What treatment(s) do you have? I’ve had a manicure and Bio Sculpture Gel overlays and I’ll be back very soon for a Lana Luxury Pedicure and a head, neck, back and relax massage.

Do you think it’s value for money? Absolutely, it’s total bliss to be pampered in such a calming yet friendly atmosphere. The Bio Sculpture Gel overlays are worth every penny as they’re protective and long lasting with a high shine finish which didn’t dull at all. What do you think makes Lana Beautique special? The salon is effortlessly stylish. Their customer service is excellent and the products are lovely. I also loved that my therapist was extremely knowledgeable and her passion for her work shone through. ❧ 54 ❧

Would you recommend them to family/friends/colleagues? Absolutely, the staff at Lana Beautique make a mere mani feel like the most indulgent experience it can be. Having seen my nails some of my friends have already booked in and I'll be back soon.

With a career spanning some 26 years as a professional hairdresser and make-up artists for top celebrities, feature films and TV shows, Allison Sing has now brought her talents, and those of her hand-picked team, to Penarth. We caught up with Alli (in between TV shoots) to ask her about her new venture in Penarth.

HAIR OR MAKEUP Why have you decided to set up Hair or Make Up in Penarth? I live in Penarth and, whilst I enjoy travelling all over the world on filmshoots and making sure celebrities look their best wherever they may be, my heart belongs to Penarth and, as my children are of school age, I would like to take them to and from school. I believe that there is a real need for a salon that provides the total package - fabulous hair and make-up all under one roof. Where do your clients come from? We are lucky to have attracted a good following both locally and from further afield. Because of my links with the acting world, I do get a lot of the acting profession coming here but, and I know this sounds a cliché, all of our clients are treated as celebrities The Hair or Make Up concept sounds perfect for the bride to be... What we want is for the bride, her bridesmaids and friends to be completely pampered. We can close the salon down just for them. We’re not licensed but clients can bring their own wine, which helps get that relaxed and fun element into the experience.

How did you choose your stylists? Kelly and Parris have been in the hairdressing profession for over ten years. Both keep up-to-date with the latest techniques and products and attend the most relevant shows, seminars and courses. Describe the experience of a visit to Hair or Make Up? There’s nothing worse than a stuffy or clinical environment. I have specifically designed our work stations to be quite close together so that our clients feel comfortable in chatting with each other and the staff. We ask our clients about their lifestyle to make sure that the haircut and style can be maintained. The same can be said for make-up. We offer training sessions which show clients how to master daytime, evening and special occasion make-up, with tips on how to make the most of their features, which I have learnt over many years which they wouldn’t get from high street department stores.

Tell us about your work with cancer patients and their needs? As a trained wig maker, it grieves me to think that patients can spend over the odds on wigs that are ill-fitting and which don’t suit their face shapes and personalities. Hair and Make Up are open every Monday to offer wig styling, fitting and a maintenance service to those who suffer from hair loss or who are going through or have gone through the trials of hair loss. We can also help with make-up advice for those clients.

Do you offer out-of-hours service? Yes, we provide a fully mobile special occasions service and can be available on Sundays for pre-booked weddings and events. There’s really nothing better than a personal recommendation for a salon than that of a genuine customer. We met with Joanna Paige of Chepstow, a longstanding customer of The Secret Garden of Beauty in Barry to find out why she is such an ardent fan of the salon.

TRIED & TESTED What made you choose this salon? The Secret Garden in Barry is a pocket of pure heaven. Over the years I have tried so many different salons, but there is something truly magical about The Secret Garden. It is so worth the drive from Chepstow. From the beautiful decor to the amazing therapists. The tranquil atmosphere means you never want to leave.

Joanna Paige

What do you think about the expansion? It’s absolutely gorgeous! It’s like being in a real Secret Garden with beautiful flower themed rooms. I have been several times with friends for the ‘Boutique Retreat Tea & Cake’ spending the whole afternoon having fabulous treatments and enjoying gorgeous tea and cakes in the lovely relax room.

Amanda

What treatments do you have? I’m slowly working my way through the Service Menu! I have my staple waxing with the new Hot French Wax, Celebrity Brows and every month I have PediPlus+ Pedicures and Results Driven Facials. I always ask for vouchers for my birthday and Christmas, so can regularly treat myself to relaxing massages, body scrubs and Ayurvedic treatments. Which therapists do you see for your treatments? Amanda does the most fabulous PediPlus+ Advanced treatment, she can completely transform my tired feet, I used to go to a Chiropodist and then for a pedicure which was both costly and time consuming, but Amanda as a qualified Foot Health Practitioner has developed a treatment that combines the both.

Melissa

“The Secret Garden in Barry is a pocket of pure heaven. It’s like being in a real Secret Garden with beautiful flower themed rooms.”

Aldene is my therapist for Celebrity Brows and her Results Driven Facials are sublime. She has so much knowledge of skin care having work with all the leading brands; she has developed her own advanced facial treatment using several different machines and her ‘healing hands’. I have definitely noticed a significant improvement in my skin’s texture and firmness since having them. Melissa is my massage therapist; I’m particularly fond of the new Hot Bamboo massage. This is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, warmed bamboo as an extension of their own hands. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles, perfect for my tired, achy muscles. ❧ 56 ❧

Davies & Jones Op O tometrists invest in cutting ed dge technology to ensure patients receive the highest standards of care.

Owain Mealing lives in Ynyshir in, as he view.” puts it, “a small house with h a big view w..” His passion is eye care and he is a Director of Davies & Jones Optometrists.

THE

Owain, 29, joined Davies & Jones Optometrists in 2005 following three years training at City University London, graduating with the Cantor & clinical work. Nissel P Prrize for best undergraduate under Owain is passionate about eye care and has a special interest in glaucoma - he works one day a week at Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s glaucoma clinic and glaucoma triage unit. What’s your role at Davies & Jones? Since I started as a director in 2008, I have overseen the introduction of new technology to the business. Davies & Jones have always had cutting edge equipment; they introduced the first digital digi retinal camera in Wales a in 1994. I can remember rememb being imaged on this as a patient. Many of the local consultants came to visit and cast their eyes over this wonderful piece of kit - they were all impressed. Since then we have continued to invest in the latest technology to improve our detection and diagnostic abilities.

“W We en never ever sstop top llearning earning - tthere’s here’s always a new challenge, a new patient - it’s this that makes life interesting and, ultimately ultimately, y, most rewarding.” ❧ 58 ❧

VISIONAR I RY What are your aspirations for Davies & Jones? Davies and Jones will continue to provide cutting edge eye care to all our patients, whether NHS or private. developed a holistic approach to We’ve e h eye care that has served us and patients well. I think the way we get to know clients sets us apart. We’re e on first name terms with many - it really is a cradle to grave service as my family and I have experienced over the last thirty years. I think my core objective is to ensure that this close contact with patients isn’t compromised in any way and that we develop and improve our services.

We also have links with w secondary care providers, and are lucky to have local consultants holding private clinics in Talbot a Green and in Porth. Many private hospitals are under equipped for diagnosis and can be almost inaccessible to patients living in the valleys. Being able to provide private ophthalmology means patients can get their cataracts and other eye conditionss sorted out quicklyy. It’s a great privilege to be able to offer this kind of comprehensive service.

What’s the most rewarding part of your work? Detecting eye disease that would result in blindness and getting a patient treated in a timely fashion is just hugely rewarding. Using skills that I continue to hone day in day out to enhance a patient’s care is what makes my job most enjoyable. The fact is, we never stop learning - there’s always a new challenge, a new patient - it’s this that makes life interesting and, ultimately elyy, most rewarding. For the last three years we have been offering orthokeratology (or Orthok, it’s easier to say!). It is a completely reversible non-invasive treatment for short-sightedness that involves sleeping in specially designed contact lenses that, when removed in the morning, mean a patient does not have to wear contacts or spectacles for clear vision n during the course of the day day.. It has really taken off and is no more expensive, nsive, or riskyy, than wearing daailyy, disposable contact lenses. This means that patients can enjoy safe, clear and comfortable vision all through the dayy.

❧ 59 ❧

What’s your vision for the future? We never stop learning. learni That’s one of the things I love about Davies & Jones. There’s a real thirst for knowledge all our optometrists undergo more than the basic optometry qualifications and each develops special interests in addition to the day to day eye examination.

COTTAGE GARDENS

You don’t have to live in a cottage to own a Cottage Garden. To start with, cottage garden’s are all about plants and very little else. The original cottage gardeners didn’t bother with grass because it took up valuable growing space. The simplest of paths would be there for practical reasons only, for getting around, harvesting and dead heading. It was wall to wall plants all jumbled together with every single gap filled. Cottage gardeners simply stuck things in wherever there was room, design didn’t come into it, the garden just happened. Today, cottage gardeners are the sort who keep nipping a bit out of the lawn every couple of months to enlarge the flower beds to make more room. This kind of gardening is so easy to create there are no RHS guidelines and no rule book to follow, this type of garden breaks all the rules.

You can cram a lot different plants into a small space without losing the overall character - cottage gardens are just at home on a modern housing estate as they are surrounding a romantic country cottage. The key to planting cottage gardens is to choose easy going plants, the only trees and shrubs you should plant are the sort that provides fruit for the house. Flowers like Gladioli, Sweet Peas and Dahlias are the ideal plants for growing as cut flowers. These days you can make a low maintenance cottage garden border by teaming self seeding hardy annuals with rampant spreading perennials. If you stick with this style of gardening for a few years your border can contain a mixture of choicer plants too. You can start to weed out the less exciting, more vigorous plants and spend a little cash to put in something showier.

To achieve the look of a traditional Victorian cottage garden, try to include old recycled items such as old chimney pots, old kitchen sinks, obviously planted up and rustic garden structures from reclamation yards. Paths can be gravel or old brick, crazy paving with gaps left for planting, for example, thyme and edged with rope top tiles which can still be found in salvage yards. When it comes to weeding, a full border with very few gaps reduces the areas that weeds will grow in. Remember a weed is only a plant in the wrong place and the term weedy is best referred to a plants habit and not to the plant itself. A cottage garden tells a story, the plants will be begged, borrowed and sometimes stolen (with permission of course) and they all go together to create a piece of modern history. It doesn’t need to be big, it just needs to be full.

Cosmeston Country Park is one of our favourite places in the Vale, and over 250,000 of you agree with us as you visit every year. But, if you’re overlooking Cosmeston Medieval Village, you’re missing a real treat.

LIVING HISTORY

During the development of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park in 1978, excavations by Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust uncovered the remains of a community over 600 years old, and so began a unique project to restore the village of Cosmeston. The medieval village is fully accessible to visitors and set in the year 1350. Vale Life talks to Country Parks Manager, Steve Latham. Steve, what’s been happening at Cosmeston Medieval Village? We’ve recently reinstated guided tours daily at 12pm, 1.30pm and 3pm which are proving to be very popular.

What improvements have you made recently? We obtained a £13k Heritage grant which meant we could install a series of smart interpretation panels to enhance our visitors’ experience. Cosmeston has had strong support from volunteers in the past. Has that continued? Yes, we set up a new volunteer programme in partnership with the Vale Volunteer Bureau. All volunteers are offered period costume and can be trained by historical interpreters. The idea behind this is to give visitors, especially schools, a much more authentic experience.

Steve Latham

“The idea is to give visitors, especially schools, a much more authentic experience.” It’s clearly a valuable education resource. What feedback are you getting from teachers and pupils? It’s overwhelmingly positive. We’ve produced a dedicated Cosmeston Medieval Village website and developed a direct web-link to all schools via School Net. We’ve worked closely with the South Wales and Valleys literacy officer to ensure the topics and information we’re generating are in line with the national curriculum. We’ve also designed an education pack to support teachers and pupils. Is education something you’d like to develop? 44 groups and schools visited us between June and November last year. We’d like to increase that – our long term objective is to ensure that there are at least three school visits per week throughout term time. We’d also like to set up twilight sessions with school teachers to develop different educational themes at the village.

❧ 62 ❧

How important do you think Cosmeston Medieval Village is in historical terms? Welsh history is something that we’re keen to promote. Cosmeston is really special. It’s authentic and accurate and gives everyone who sees it a real insight into life here 600 years ago. If you love St Fagans, then you’ll love Cosmeston Medieval Village. This is a high quality attraction. I think the village can also be a catalyst for the teaching of traditional craft skills like thatching. We’re in touch with the Heritage Skills Foundation to create courses and develop the village as a training venue.

“Merlin was filmed here we get many visitors coming to see us because of that.” It would be great to think that in future years we could become a centre of excellence for the forgotten skills of the past. It’s all achievable

Does the village hold events? We would love to see events at the village and would encourage anyone wishing to hold an event to contact us to discuss what options are available. I understand a trust is supporting Cosmeston Medieval Village. Yes, Vale Of Glamorgan Council is delighted to be working with Cosmeston Medieval Trust Ltd. Readers can find out more about their work on their dedicated website at www.cosmestontrust.com

We hear you have links with moviemakers? Yes, there’s been quite a lot of filming here. Merlin was filmed here - we get many visitors coming to see us because of that. We’ve actually created in-house promotional film clips which can be viewed on the screen in the visitor centre and, hopefully, will be included on the new Vale website. What are your aspirations for the next twelve months? We’ll be carrying out numerous site improvements with volunteer groups and making further applications for grant assistance to further improve the visitor experience. Long term, we’d love to achieve the Sandford Award for Heritage Education. That would make us very proud. ❧ 63 ❧

There is no better recommendation for any clinic than the personal recommendation of a valued client. We met with Nichola Lee, registered nurse at a local hospital, to find out why she is a fan of Cyfoes Healthcare, Talbot Green.

TRIED & TESTED What made you decide to go to Cyfoes Healthcare? I am work colleagues of both the owner of Cyfoes, Andrea and her clinic manager, Beth. I have worked with them both for a number of years in a professional capacity. I was obviously aware of them setting up their business as a consequence.

What issues did you feel you needed addressing? I've always had an issue with my frown line and it has caused me to have low confidence for a number of years, especially growing up! I wasn't aware of the treatments available to me, especially within my local area, so it was an ideal opportunity when the clinic opened for me to arrange a consultation with Andrea.

“Both Andrea and Beth have made me feel at ease throughout.”

Andrea and I spent a long time talking through my options and alleviating any concerns I had regarding the treatments. I’d already had positive feedback from other work colleagues, so felt confident to go ahead with my chosen treatments. I was given all the relevant information from start to finish and the aftercare was superb. They were always at the end of the phone to answer any concerns or queries I had and I continue to attend the clinic on a regular basis for consultations and treatments.

What treatments do you have there? My treatments include dreamer fillers and Botox, which they concentrate on my frown line and the muscles around that area. This deals with my actual lines and also prevents them from recurring in the future. I attend the clinic every four to six months to keep these treatments up. Andrea tends to carry out the majority of my treatments but Beth is also around most times. Would you consider Cyfoes good value for money? The treatments are definitely value for money and they always have offers on which is a good thing as I certainly like a bargain! What difference has having the treatments made to your life? They have made a huge difference to my confidence and self esteem. Both Andrea and Beth have made me feel at ease throughout. I would definitely continue attending and would recommend them both in a professional and personal capacity.

When Mandy and John Davies first laid eyes on Crossways House, they knew it was where they wanted to live with their family. We chat to Mandy about why they have now decided it’s time to move on to another phase in their lives.

CROSSWAYS HOUSE We still rent out apartments for holiday lets, which is a trouble-free and pleasant way of creating a reliable income source, utilising the space that Crossways House provides and even making new friends and contacts along the way. Does the house have a history? It dates back to the seventeenth century. There have been many restorations in its long life so we are not exactly sure of what happened when. What we do know is that it has been in private hands most of its existence, except between the 1930s and 60s when it was a children's orthopaedic hospital and that a major restoration took place lasting four years and completed in 1921. How long have you lived at the property? We bought Crossways House fourteen years ago when, having lived in the southeast and overseas for many years, we returned home to South Wales with our sons. What attracted you to it? It was a sunny day and this fascinating, historic house was crying out for attention. We had not been looking for a property of this size, but we fell in love with it on sight. We had restored and renovated houses before and were excited at the prospect of bringing this lovely building back to life.

When did you start up your business? Almost immediately, the house needed money spending on it; windows, roof work, bathrooms... a long, long list so an added income was going to be very helpful for a while. Within two weeks we were hosting our first guests. What does Crossways House offer? This is a beautiful and tranquil spot and the house has fantastic features and a rich history. Anyone buying Crossways House has masses of options, whether they just want a large, private and elegant family home or wish to run a business here.

❧ 68 ❧

What have you enjoyed most about living at Crossways House? Its beauty, its sense of calm and its fantastic location close to Cowbridge (we are just 1 mile from the High Street) and just 12 miles from Cardiff. The Vale is a stunning area. Where else could you have a rural, peaceful environment, near to a spectacular coastline, within a short trip of the mountains of the Brecon National Park whilst enjoying the facility of a vibrant and modern capital city right on your doorstep? Perfect. The house and grounds are extensive, we have over six acres of private grounds, which makes it a very peaceful place to be.

“This is a beautiful and tranquil spot and the house has fantastic features and a rich history.” Why have you decided to sell? We have been living here for over fourteen years - the longest we have spent anywhere, and we need to look at other opportunities and experiences whilst we can. We can’t imagine living anywhere else and will sorely miss this lovely place, but life moves on. What are your plans for the future? Travel and maybe some other restoration projects in time. What is the asking price? It’s on the market for £1,550,000 Who are the agents? Watts and Morgan of Cowbridge. To find out more contact Rhys Gould on 01446 776944. THE LAST WORD People generally go into businesses that they feel passionate about. This can certainly be said for Ruth Benjamin Green, owner of Benjamin’s Interiors, on Penarth Road, Cardiff. We managed a quick chat with Ruth to find out more. Where do your customers come from? Far and wide - we have many loyal local customers, the M4 corridor, west Wales and Swansea. We also sell online and these orders come from all over the uk. Where do you shop in the Vale? I love The Queen B in Penarth and also trust Ben at Nolton Shoes for our Hunter wellies!

What is Benjamin’s Interiors? We are an unusual and quirky interior shop offering a diverse range of furniture and interior products. You can find something here to suit all tastes, whether that’s country, shabby chic, ultra modern high gloss, venetian, pine or oak. There’s also a huge range of lighting, mirrors and accessories. We also offer a bespoke furniture service which includes free standing kitchens, lounge and dining furniture all of which can be painted in your favourite Farrow & Ball paint finishes. Benjamin’s Interiors has everything to make your house a home. Who is at home? Myself, my husband Andrew and my daughter Naomi, although she is away a lot as she is studying at Birmingham university. Two German Shepherds, a cat, horses, chickens, ducks... oh and don’t forget the parrot Coco! We live in a converted coach house on a farm. Describe your home? I love a home that is glamorous and chic and our home reflects that. Our home is furnished with items mostly bought from Benjamin’s, of course!

What makes Benjamin’s different to other furniture showrooms? Maybe it’s the great selection we have here. We source our items from Sweden, China, India and Thailand. We’re also proud that we source many of our products locally - our bespoke carpenters live locally and some of our sofas are from a family business in the UK.

What makes you happy? Knowing that my family are happy and safe. I am also very lucky to have found my soul mate in Andrew - he’s my rock and my best friend and of course my business is my life’s blood. Seeing it go from strength to strength just makes me feel so proud. When you love what you do with passion it’s a pleasure to come to work. I have a wonderful team around me who help make Benjamin’s Interiors the best furniture shop around. Sum yourself up in three words... Driven, passionate, loyal. You may not know this but... We are open seven days a week and offer free interior design advice, but shhh don’t tell everyone!

Or maybe it’s that customers feel happy to spend all morning or afternoon here browsing, given that it’s a very informal and relaxed environment. We even offer tea and biscuits! You were based at the Pumping Station - why the move? Yes, we were there for about twenty years and we had some really good times there but we basically outgrew it. We couldn’t find the right spot to relocate but then this unit came up and we went for it. It was a big gamble though, given that we increased our square footage by 400% but, if the demand is there, you have to supply it. ❧ 73 ❧
