Passionate about the Vale of Glamorgan We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright Vale Life 2014. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse.

WELCOME Now that the school summer holidays are well and truly with us, we thought we’d give you a few ideas on where to spend a few hours (or days). Our Vale towns are good choices as they have enough to keep everyone entertained with a choice of fantastic independent shops, beaches, restaurants and cafes. We’re introducing you to lots of lovely businesses in these four popular towns, but don’t forget the other areas of the Vale (we just couldn’t get around to everyone). Any time is a good time to think about freshening up your home interior or exterior, so why not the summer? A new kitchen or a new bathroom will make the world of difference. Our magazine regulars, Spacefittingfurniture, Thomas Gardiner Bathrooms and Interiors and Sigma3 can help you out there. Where the exterior is concerned, why not consider an orangery by the talented team that are

Creative Windows or bespoke bi-fold or patio doors by Alexander James – a sure fire way of letting the outside in and making the most of your garden. This summer issue is jam packed with interesting articles and features for you to enjoy. Keep sending us your feedback. We’re not precious and we love to hear what you think about Vale Life and the Vale. See you again in the autumn. ServiceCare Moth Solutions There’s nothing worse than seeing holes in our clothes, furniture or carpets. What’s the culprit? Moths. Why are we being invaded now? The answer is that we like to keep our homes warm throughout the year with central heating and have a preference for natural fibres like wool and cashmere - providing perfect food and lodging for moths and their larvae. “Moths breed in dark, undisturbed places and a quick run-round with the hoover won’t shift eggs from those places, or wool carpets that are under furniture” says Brian Roberts, whose company ServiceCare has been eradicating moths from homes and businesses throughout the UK for the last ten years. Brian uses specialist heat treatment services in hotels, homes, stately homes, museums, clothing manufacturers, warehouses, shops, circuses, studios and costumiers. “Once you’ve spotted any damage then chances are that the moths have already set in. The main benefit of our heat treatment programme is the ability to treat delicate fabrics and larger items (rugs etc) with minimal, if any, need for insecticide.”

Brian offers effective, quick, non-damaging treatment which eradicates moths within fabrics, furniture, soft furnishings and more. Call today for a free, no obligation quote. COWBRIDGE

Cowbridge Music Festival 2014 Cowbridge Music Festival celebrates its fifth birthday this September with two weeks of wonderful music. The festival opens in Holy Cross Church on Wednesday September 10th with a concert of Tchaikovsky and Bach given by the Festival Camerata, a group of fine string players from all over Europe, firm favourites of the Cowbridge audience.

King Candy and the Sugar Push

On Thursday, with the intriguing title ‘One Carry-on Bag Only’, crazy comic and virtuoso pianist Hyung-ki Joo performs his ‘handbag’ of humorous songs and classical pieces in Cowbridge School Theatre.

<

Back in the church, Saturday sees the eagerly awaited return of great Welsh pianist Llyr Williams, in a programme of Haydn, Schubert, Liszt and Schumann.

<

Then on Sunday 14th two of the best young Welsh singers take to the stage. Tenor Elgan Llyr Thomas is joined by soprano Menna Cazel Davies in a programme of songs, arias and duets. On Thursday 18th violinist Alina Ibragimova, a celebrity in the classical world, brings her highly successful string quartet, Chiaroscuro, to give a concert of Mozart and Haydn. Definitely one for the connoisseurs. And then for something completely different, King Candy and the Sugar Push, one of the country’s top swing bands, arrives at Cowbridge School Theatre on Friday 19th. Singing with the group is talented vocalist Kate Mullins of the Puppini Sisters.

The Chiaroscuro String Quartet

To round off the festival on Saturday 20th, the church is again the venue for a concert of music from four centuries with the leading brass ensemble, Septura. As always, the festival will give a warm welcome to everyone, seasoned concert goers as well as those just happy to give it a go, in a friendly atmosphere with the opportunity to chat with friends and performers over a glass of wine. Tickets are available from Xantippe on Cowbridge High Street and online at www.cowbridgemusicfestival.co.uk 6

Since opening Amorio Cosmetics just over four months ago, the salon is going from strength to strength. We chat to owner Jess Carmell to find out more.

A MORIO Lip Voltage Lip voltage is a non-injectable lip plumper, which is taking the beauty industry by storm! It contains quick absorbing peptide, which fills and adds volume to the lips. Ladies can now control how much plump they want in their pout, simply by ‘mixing up’ the voltage to customise a low, medium or high “Lip Voltage”. Whether you want a plumped-up perfected pout, or natural, soft, beautiful lips, Lip Voltage lets you create the lips you’ve only ever dreamed of! Simply apply the gloss to the lips for a pout that lasts for up to 24 hours.

How have things been since we last spoke Jess? The response has been unbelievable! As well as my loyal regular clients, I am gaining new ones on a daily basis, many coming from further afield, so the word is definitely spreading. Due to this, I have now employed someone to help with the expansion of Amorio, and soon there will be another Makeup Artist on board. As I am growing so rapidly, I now have bridal bookings for as far as winter 2016, and on a weekly basis I am finding myself working until around 10.30pm as I am jam-packed with makeovers. What new products or services have you introduced? As I am always searching high and low for brand new top products, I am now stocking a few beauty must-haves.

However, with continual use, the treatment builds collagen in the natural lip to create a longer lasting fuller lip. This is the beauty must-have of the year and is a hot favourite with celebrities and Makeup Artists worldwide!

It’s easy to see why Blu Hair Design in Penarth is so successful. The salon is attractively furnished, the atmosphere is friendly yet professional and they have an exceptionally talented team. The owners, Alexis and Hayley, are delighted to welcome Sami Roddy to the fold. We chat to Sami to find out what she hopes to bring to Blu.

SAMI RODDY MEET THE STYLIST

Where do you live? I live in Barry, so it’s very convenient to get to Penarth. What experience do you have? I have 11 years experience in all aspects of hairdressing. Qualified to NVQ Level 3, I specialise in hair extensions, straightening systems, hair up and wedding hair. I am also an experienced colour and cut technician. What made you want to work at Blu? It’s lovely to be reunited with my former manager Alexis Williams. We worked together in another leading salon in the Vale.

“ The girls are lovely, they’ve welcomed me with open arms.”

What do you think you can bring to Blu? In my previous role, I used to train the other staff in all aspects of hairdressing, so I’m really looking forward to bringing my knowledge and expertise to Blu. The girls are lovely and they’ve welcomed me with open arms. I’m sure we’ll all get on famously. Can you tell us about Blu’s new straightening system? Having worked with straightening systems in the past, I’m looking forward to working with Goldwell’s Kerasilk Keratin Treatment Service, which can give you hair like silk for up to five months. It can make unruly, frizzy hair manageable, soften waves and smooth hair structure. It significantly reduces daily styling time and is perfectly customisable for every client. Clients will go from frustrated to fabulous! 16

The Brogue Trader, in Morgan Arcade, stocks a range of fine gifts and gentleman’s footwear from eight British manufacturers (five hold a Royal Warrant). Owner, Chris Macnamara, is passionate about gentleman’s shoes but, more than that, he’s passionate about British made gentleman’s shoes.

BEST OF BRITISH

The Brogue Trader has been open less than a year and already is gaining a reputation around the UK for its selection of very best of British gentleman’s footwear. Read the testimonials on The Brogue Trader website and the comments from its 2,000 plus fans on Facebook and you’ll soon realise that this is not simply down to the quality of the shoes, but the exceptional service delivered daily by Chris and The Brogue Trader team.

England since 1886. Their shoes are still hand-crafted entirely in their original factory - from the cutting out of the leather, through stitching to final polishing.

Owner, Chris Macnamara, has personally chosen each brand he sells. “I love shoes!”, exclaims Chris. “It gives me immense pleasure to wear a fine pair of shoes but when a customer leaves The Brogue Trader feeling great about their new pair of shoes, I couldn’t be happier. I can see the difference it makes to their lives.”

Chris says, ”At the Brogue Trader we understand that, for a true Gentlemen, well-fitting, long-lasting shoes makes a real statement. It’s like a mark of refinement and a statement of personal pride in one’s appearance. A handmade pair of quality shoes goes beyond mere apparel, they are the creation of a master craftsman, expressing the social standing of the wearer whilst simultaneously providing the delicate structure of the feet with optimum support and protection from the stresses and strains of everyday life.”

One of the great British brands Chris stocks is Joseph Cheaney and Sons. The company has been making traditional English shoes in Northamptonshire,

Their Classic range includes timeless oxfords and brogue shoes, in both black and beautiful, hand burnished brown. Their Country and Leisure range includes shoes, loafers and boots with a choice of leather and rubber soles. This is the pinnacle of English craftsmanship.

17

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

When owner Debbie Jones set up Pinups Hair and Beauty Salon in May this year, little did she realise that the business would grow so quickly, especially given that she’s not on the high street. With the view she enjoys, we’re not surprised.

What does Pinups offer? We are delighted to offer all hairdressing treatments with the latest colour techniques from Wella. We also offer a range of beauty and holistic treatments. What is your background? I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry for the past eighteen years but decided I wanted to try something completely new, where I could work for myself. After buying a house in the Dordogne, and listening to ex-pats saying that it was hard to get British hairdressers, I decided to train thinking initially that I would be moving to the Dordogne. However, following my husband’s promotion, it was clear that we were going to be in the UK for a further ten years, hence Pinups. Why did you decide to open Pinups from your home? I didn’t want to be on the high street. Here clients can enjoy complete privacy, breathe in the lovely, fresh, clean air and take in the views. It’s the perfect location. What training have you had so far? I have completed the NVQ level 2 and I have also now completed training in some beauty aspects such Gel nails, spray tans and waxing. Who are your therapists? Beth Robinson is a hairdresser and a beauty therapist and Angela Walsh looks after the holistic therapies. Both are very highly trained in their respective fields. They get on so well together - we all do, which makes for a lovely working relationship.

PINUPS What beauty treatments do you offer? We offer deep tissue facials, waxing, body scrubs, nails, gel, shellac and acrylic, manicure, pedicure, eyelash and eyebrow tint. Our holistic therapies include Swedish body massage, Indian head massage, reflexology, aromatherapy massages, thermoauricular therapy (Hopi ear candling) head, neck and shoulder massage.

Tell us about your relaxation days… We offer two mini treatments, exclusive use of the spa pool and a light lunch. The spa days run from 11am in the morning until 4pm in the afternoon. We also have a pick up and drop off service for parties of six. We are not licensed, so we advise guests to bring their own. These are perfect for hen parties, birthday parties and special occasions. Clients say that after a day here, they feel totally relaxed and rejuvenated. Tell us about your prom packages? These take place in the afternoons. On arrival, clients enjoy a glass of nonalcoholic bubbly and an hour in the spa tub. They then enjoy having their nails done and finish off with a spray tan. Delicious nibbles are served throughout the afternoon. Do you offer wedding packages? Yes, tailored to suit the individual. We meet the bridal shower and the bride, bridesmaids and mothers and we all discuss their requirements for the day. This is usually about six weeks prior to the wedding. On that evening, they get exclusive use of the spa pool and the whole of Pinups. They can choose to have a treatment or just have a get together. The following meeting is two weeks prior to the wedding where we have a trial night to assess timings on the big day. This would be an evening meeting. One week before the bride and groom come for a de-stress evening. Both have head, neck and shoulder massage, manicure and pedicure getting them ready for their big day. 20

If the bride chooses to have a spray tan, we advise that she comes back three days before the actual event. On the big day we can either go to their home or we can pick them up and bring them here and take them back so they can have a relaxing morning getting ready. What do you think is Pinups unique selling point? Without a doubt, it’s the setting, the view and the exclusivity. There’s ample car parking and, even though we’re in a rural setting, it’s conveniently located - only three miles from Cowbridge and three miles from Llantwit Major. Do you also cater for men and children? Yes, I look after the barbering, and children are most definitely catered for. We have a safe and secure outdoor play area for the children so mums don’t need to worry about childcare. We have groups of mums who come together, enjoy tea and cake, and take it in turns to have their hair, nails, tans etc done, happy in the knowledge that their children are safe and enjoying themselves.

Are you pleased with how Pinups is being received so far? Delighted. Everybody that walks around the corner gasps at the views. We are seeing regular faces and new ones, so we couldn’t be happier.

In 1918, the first permanent ride was erected at Coney Beach, Porthcawl, by Charlie and Marshall Evans. It was the iconic figure 8. Over the next sixty years, the park grew into a tour de force of family fun. There has been an Evans family presence at Coney Beach ever since.

LIFE’S A BEACH The figure 8 ride was originally brought to Swansea by the US Government to entertain their troops during the First World War. At the end of the war, Charlie and Marshall bought it and erected it in Porthcawl. To keep the US link, the park was named Coney Beach as a tribute to the famous New York amusement park, Coney island.

Since then, the park has closed only once, in 1939 following the outbreak of World War 2. Normal service resumed in 1946 but the park boomed in the 1950s. The park’s popularity has grown steadily over the years and has hosted major events including boxing matches, fireworks displays and aerial acrobat shows. In 1984, the park and its land were purchased outright by Pat Evans and, after Pat’s sad passing in 2006, the management of Coney Beach was handed down to son Pat and sister Eleanor. Their mum (92) is still involved in the day-to-day running of Coney Beach and works every day. At its peak, Coney Beach entertained over a million visitors a year. Pat says, “The growing popularity of overseas holidays has meant the park is run on a smaller scale, but it still attracts 800,000 visitors a year.” These days, Coney Beach is still popular with loyal visitors from all over the UK. “They’re people who have grown up with the park,” says Pat. “They bring their children and grandchildren here – perhaps to recapture some of the magic of their childhood.” We love Coney Beach too. Even now it still has 25 rides and a host of cafes and kiosks and a great beach just a minute away – plenty to keep a family entertained on a warm summer’s day. I can remember going there regularly as a child and I still really like it now. It has a certain something, a little magic you just can’t get from a video game. 28

Not all coffee shops are made equal. Coast Coffee at Dock Street, Porthcawl, has something that makes it stand out from the crowd. Yes, it prides itself on serving the most amazing coffee, but it has a lot more to offer. We chat to owner Alison Bennett.

A TOAST TO COAST

What does Coast Coffee offer its customers? Above all else it’s a coffee shop, I was adamant I wanted to serve amazing coffee. Having attended a Barista course I learnt that the key to great tasting coffee is that it’s freshly ground to order, not all coffee providers do this and the end result can be bitter tasting coffee. Our staff are all trained to the highest standards of coffee preparation and often produce stunning ‘Latte Art’ to top our beverages. Both Jules and Zoe have received extensive Barista training having worked in Starbucks and Australian coffee shops respectively and Sarah and I have also benefited from their years of experience. What about our great British staple, tea? Trust me, our teas don’t come second best. Our customers love our loose leaf teas, which include a large selection of fruit and iced teas, served in our attractive glass tea pots. we also offer a large selection of cold drinks including the popular Schmoo milkshakes.

What’s on the food menu? We have a great selection of freshly prepared baguettes, sandwiches, panini’s and salads as well as a an extensive selection of cakes, some of which are gluten free. Our Welsh Dairy ice cream by Mario’s has been a great success, especially during the recent warmer weather. What do you think brings customers to Coast Coffee? We’re lucky enough to be really close to one of the main car parks in the town, so that’s really handy. I think customers come here for a number of reasons. We have a large premises and are able to have different areas that suit both families, couples and business users (our free wi-fi comes in handy for this). We have comfy leather sofas for people enjoying the free daily newspapers but we are also child friendly with an area for children to colour or read. We see Coast as a place for people to relax and meet friends. 31

Who are your customers? Although we have only been open a couple of weeks we are already experiencing returning regular customers which include families and community groups, and even an art group who meet every Tuesday. It’s really lovely to watch them drawing and producing some stunning pictures, some of which we have on display on our walls. Because of the space here we also have several young mums with prams who meet up for a chat after dropping their other children off to school. We would like to actively encourage groups or societies that are looking for a regular meeting place to come and speak to us. What I wanted to offer was excellent coffee, fantastic service and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and I’m glad to say, I think we have achieved this. If you’re visiting Porthcawl this summer then, depending on your mood, there are two eateries which should be on your ‘go-to’ list: The Piccolo Bar on the Promenade, and the Well Street Fish Restaurant on Well Street. We chat to one of the family members Luisa Verderame, to find out more.

FANTASTICO!

Which came first, The Piccolo Bar or Well Street Fish Restaurant? That would be Well Street Fish Restaurant, The Piccolo Bar is a bambino in comparison. Who are the owners of each business? Both are owned and run by Sidoli Bros ltd, an established family business since 1946.

The Piccolo Bar When was The Piccolo Bar extended to what we see today? The Piccolo Bar was a simple kiosk up until May of 2012. Then we re-opened with our elegant glass café. What difference has this made to business? Quite a difference. People now have somewhere to go all year round, whatever the weather. We are no longer reliant on fair weather trade. Who are your customers? We have a wide customer base. Primarliy, Monday to Friday, we welcome local customers and those from the surrounding South Wales area who are retired and want to enjoy some relaxation time.

During the holiday periods, we attract families with children. However, it is at weekends when our visitor mix is at its most varied – anybody and everybody who wants to sit down in a warm and friendly environment , enjoying the views with a light refreshment. What do you think makes The Piccolo Bar special? I could say that it’s our outstanding coffee, our delicious home-made dairy ice cream or our great customer service, but I think it is generally agreed that our best feature is the location. We are centrally positioned on the main promenade, right on the seafront. Having uninterrupted views of the coastline that constantly changes throughout the day, the glass structure allows panoramic views as the coastline’s mood changes. Whatever the weather in Porthcawl, there is always something to see – we catch every sunset and every wave. We are really spoiled. What is The Piccolo Bar like during the winter months? Cosy and inviting. We are able to bring our customers something that they have not been able to share before and that is the elements. 32

The minimalist design of the building was a deliberate consideration. We wanted to highlight the fabulous South Wales coastline, and the emphatic views across the Bristol Channel to North Devon. When we had the recent storms at the beginning of the year, people were coming to the building to shelter and watch the waves as they crashed on the promenade. It certainly was dramatic which created a wonderful atmosphere. Have you introduced anything new for the summer months? Yes. As one of the few remaining Italian families in South Wales making homemade dairy ice cream, according to an original recipe formulated by my grandfather; we decided to introduce a range of exciting and elaborate sundaes, in addition to the existing offering of ice cream cones and tubs. Customers can now treat themselves and enjoy our home-made dairy ice cream as a sundae. They can choose from one of eight dishes that include a strawberry fayre, a caramel and nut cluster or if one is feeling indulgent, our chocolate devil sundae. There is a sundae to suit everybody.

“Whatever the weather there is something to see.”

Are they locally sourced? It is important that the products we use are the best quality available on the marketplace. Our fish comes from sustainable stocks around UK, Norwegian and Icelandic waters, while our potatoes are always British. Whenever possible, we try to obtain Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire Maris Piper potatoes.

Well Street Fish Restaurant Do customers visit at certain times or are you busy throughout the day? Lunchtime is our busiest time of the day. We are situated, conveniently, off the main high street and just a stone’s throw away from the promenade and The Piccolo Bar. Local shoppers and visitors to the town centre, enjoy coming to us during lunchtime so it makes sense to open Monday-Saturday from 11.30am-2.30pm. What are the most requested dishes? Well Street Fish Restaurant serves freshly prepared, traditional fish and chips. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that cod is still our most requested dish. However, we also serve Hake, Plaice and Haddock – they are all very popular with customers.

They are delicious and provide the best balance between consistency, flavour, texture and appearance. In short, they make very good chips! What do you think makes Well Street Fish Restaurant so special? We have been serving fish and chips to the general public for over forty years and by being a family-run business we can add that personal touch to our service which customers appreciate. Our modern premises is light, airy, roomy and welcoming. We would like to think that we are doing something right as we have customers that have been visiting us for over 30 years.

“Our fish comes from sustainable stocks around UK, Norwegian and Icelandic waters.” 33

We love the new signage. Why did you feel the need to update it? We introduced the new signage after The Piccolo Bar extension. We wanted to marry the branding format of The Piccolo Bar with The Well Street Fish Restaurant. The signage and menus reflect a modern and contemporary feel and while our roots are in the past, we are an up to date and evolving family business. We love fish and chips... Fish and chips is the iconic national dish, popular with everyone. The new signage gives a fresh and broader appeal to this dining concept. Fish and chips has great integrity and are tasty and nutritious. We want to remind people just how good it is.

The Elvis Festival has grown beyond recognition since it first hit Porthcawl in 2004. We chat to Festival Organiser Peter Phillips to find out how it all started.

A LL SHOOK UP!

How did the Elvis Festival come to be? The Festival came about in 2004 when I heard that the Grand Pavilion was under threat of closure. I had known the venue since I was a kid and, feeling something should be done to help, approached them with an idea we, as a production company, had on the back burner - an Award show for Elvis Tribute Artists. The Pavilion was keen and some of the venues in the town got behind the idea. We chose the last weekend of September as that gave the town an extra weekend after the traditional end of the season. How has it grown? From a successful first year the event mushroomed and for the last five years has officially been the biggest Elvis Festival in the World – now twice the size of Collingwood in Canada, the second largest. A report commissioned last year by the Welsh Assembly Government estimated that 31,000 attend the event spending £6.7 million into the local economy. Every hotel, B&B and caravan in the town is always sold out a year in advance. How does the town get involved? The format of the event has not changed since the start. The Official Shows are held in the Grand Pavilion. The Hi Tide is essentially a festival in its own right with five venues staging over 100 shows over the weekend – most free to enter. Almost every other pub in Porthcawl puts on its own programme of Elvis events. This year, to add to the atmosphere, the Harley Davison Owners Club is planning a mass cruise in aid of Ty Hafan.

“ From a successful first year the event mushroomed and for the last five years has officially been the biggest Elvis Festival in the World.” The Festival has gone global. Tell us more. We have also established another Elvis Festival in Benidorm that we call ‘Porthcawl on Tour.’ It’s nowhere near the size of Porthcawl but now in its fourth year it is the biggest Elvis event in mainland Europe. The Welsh Assembly Government has put us on an export programme and we are working with Regional Development Agencies in Norway and Croatia to establish northern and eastern European Elvis festivals. Wales now exports more Elvis Festival than coal! 34

It’s been a little while since we caught up with Stacey Ranson at Coast Hair Studio, St Brides, near Ewenny. Not surprising really, given how much has been going on at the salon over the last few months. We chat to Stacey to find out more.

COAST HAIR STUDIO

How have things been going since we last met? So much has been going on. I can hardly believe it. We have taken on a new stylist, Sara, and she’s awesome! Also we are expanding into the old flower shop and having a full re-fit. We are also in the process of acquiring the CACI ultimate machine. Sara’s from Rhoose, and has previously worked in a salon in Llantwit Major for six years. Sara is NVQ Level 3 trained and is an incredibly talented colourist and stylist and has already built a great rapport with her clients. We’re delighted to have her on board. How is Sara settling in? She fits our team so well, with her lovely bubbly personality and ambition to further her career - she’s exactly what Coast needs, we’re a growing salon so we’re always looking for the best talent. How are customers taking to her? Even though Sara has only recently joined the team, her diary is filling up fast with clients re-booking in advance. She has already started adding clients to our loyalty card scheme. We couldn’t be happier.

How many staff are there now? We have six in all. Four stylists, one beauty therapist and Rach [Rachel] who is on work experience while in college. I hear you’re expanding the beauty side of Coast… Yes, it’s very exciting. Thuy has joined our team to look after our beauty clients, offering services such as Gelish, Shellac, acrylic and gel nails, nail art, pedicures, facial waxing and threading, lash and brow tinting and lash lift. Lash extensions will be coming soon. What other plans can you divulge for the months ahead? We will soon be offering facials, massage and Shiatsu in our brand new beauty room, which we are currently developing. Coast Hair Studio is constantly growing and we have taken on the unit next door to offer even more services, treatments. We’re getting busier so to have more space when we are super busy really helps. We’re getting busier and busier as our reputation is growing.

“ We will soon be offering facials, massage and Shiatsu.” 41

The recently refurbished Orangery restaurant at The Fairways Hotel on West Drive, Porthcawl commands an imposing view of the sea. For most, the beautiful panoramic view would be enough, but combine that with great service and really good food and you have a recipe for a truly special dining experience.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

As the name suggests The Fairways Hotel has strong links with golf. There are several excellent courses nearby and Royal Porthcawl is (excuse the pun) a short drive to the west. But, if golf isn’t your raison d’être, don’t panic because, depending on the time or day you visit, it’s clientele will be an eclectic mix of business people, ladies that lunch, tourists and wedding guests. The hotel is a five minute stroll from Porthcawl’s town centre and has an air of quiet, confident charm about it. The interior of the Orangery restaurant, bar and inner dining area have been beautifully redesigned. Owner and Managing Director, James Godbear, is justifiably proud: ‘We are delighted to have launched our refurbished restaurant which will add to our high portfolio of facilities. We strive to be one of South Wales’ most popular dining destinations.”

The hotel has eighteen rooms, eight with views of the sea, and one bridal suite. All of the rooms are en-suite, some have walk-in showers and the others have a bath. And while James is extremely proud of the new Orangery restaurant, he is keen to remind us that the hotel caters for many visitors. James adds, “The Hotel is a great location for weddings and available for hire every day of the week. We’re able to host ceremonies and receptions and the kitchen is happy to create bespoke menus.” Talking about the menu, it is best described as modern British but without any pretentiousness. The menu includes signature dishes such as Lollipop Lamb Chops and utilises fresh, seasonal and locally sourced produce. There’s also a special two course menu that changes weekly (at lunch and in the early evening) for the great price of £12.95. On Sundays, an excellent carvery is served and, during the summer months, a barbecue menu has been introduced to make the best of the stunning weather. If you haven’t visited the Orangery before, you really must. Whether it’s for morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, one thing’s for sure, the view alone will be worth it. 42

Close your eyes, and imagine Edna Mode, the avant-garde fashion designer and super suits seamstress in Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles saying, “Patio doors are so last season darling!” And she’d be right, because the only doors any self-respecting conservatory or orangery designer is going to be using these days are bi-folds. “What’s so great about bi-folds?” I hear you ask, and, if you have to ask, please leave the room now, you clearly have no taste. Quite simply a set of bi-fold doors can change your life. How do I know this? Because I have been converted. The first thing I love about bi-folds is the increase in light. Closed or open they increase light into a room significantly. In summer, the effect created by opening the doors completely is truly stunning. If you’re lucky enough to have a decent garden, it will be like having a twenty foot plasma television and watching the world’s best nature programme. The relationship created between the outside and inside is life changing (and I’m really not exaggerating). In winter, the significant increase in light is most welcome. I do suffer a little with SAD Syndrome in winter months, and the increase in ambient light has had a noticeably positive effect on my mood. The next thing to consider is material. If you’re even thinking about mentioning uPVC, don’t. The material of choice here is aluminium which has two excellent properties: it’s light and it’s strong (remember you’re going to have to slide those lovely doors open and you don’t want to be breaking in to an unattractive sweat while showing off.) The other great thing about aluminium is that it can be coloured. If you’re Katie Price, you might choose pink but, by far, the most popular colours are white, charcoal and black.

The next question is who do you entrust with the project? There are plenty of companies out there in South Wales but you’ll want to speak to someone who actually manufactures bi-fold doors. Alexander James, a family owned Welsh company, have been designing, manufacturing and installing bi-fold doors for over ten years. The company has many satisfied customers across south Wales and along the M4 corridor (they also do a lot of work in London). Andy Farmer lives in Barry and is Sales Director at Alexander James. He prides himself on being an expert on bi-folds. “We manufacture all our bi-fold frames and doors in-house. We only use higrade aluminium and all our frames and doors come with a guarantee,” he says, “The technology has moved forward in recent years. Doors are stronger, lighter and the colour palette available is almost unlimited. You can have tinted glass and even blinds set within the double glazing. It’s a revolutionary product.” Cost is always a factor in any home improvement but Andy is confident that Alexander James are extremely competitive. “Yes price is important,” Andy says, “but you have to ensure that corners aren’t cut when it comes to security and safety. We’re confident our bi-fold doors are competitively priced but we won’t compromise on quality of materials or any part of the manufacturing process. We value our reputation more.” So if you’re your patio doors are a little tired and you’d like to let a little more light into your life, perhaps reading this will be an eye-opener. I can, with all honesty, say that installing bi-fold doors has changed my life. And, as Edna from The Incredibles might say, “It will be bold. Dramatic! Heroic!”

“ In summer, the effect created by opening the doors completely is truly stunning.” 46

If, like us, you are creatures of habit then, chances are, you’ll probably frequent restaurants that you know and love. For us, this can certainly be said about one of our regular haunts, Le Raj, in Porthcawl. After discovering them back in 2011, this hot little Indian is still ticking all our boxes.

CURRY FAVOUR We arrived quite early on a Wednesday evening around 6.30pm and were, initially, quite surprised at seeing a few tables already taken a few couples, a family, and a large party. We thought we were the early birds!

Come to think of it, going out for an early evening meal makes sense. Why go to the trouble of prepping and cooking meals for yourselves when you can book a table and have it all done for you? Sometimes it’s nice to have a break. I live by the principle of KISS - keep it simple stupid. Did we have an enjoyable time? Was the service attentive? Was the food tasty? And would we go back? Our waiter for the evening took us to our table and made sure we were happy with our drinks and the obligatory pappadums and relishes as we perused the menu and the decor. Le Raj is home to a number of interesting ornaments which the owner has obviously taken great care in sourcing. Some Indian restaurants can be quite bland with minimal decor but not Le Raj. It offers plenty of conversation starters. On to the food. As I get older, I find I’m becoming more adventurous. Maybe I’m trying to cram more tastes and experiences in before I depart, who knows? With my new-found sense of adventure, I asked our waiter to suggest a few dishes that we’d not tried before things that he thought we’d like. He suggested a starter of Mincy Dim, a freshly spiced mince topped with a delicately flavoured egg. Definitely a new one for us but we loved it. It’s on our new favourite starters. Only £2.95, but enough for two.

“ The flavours worked so well together.”

Next came the Tandoori King Prawn Khazana – King Prawns roasted in a clay oven then cooked in a thick, spicy sauce and served with stir-fried aubergines garnished with fresh coriander. Another good choice. The flavours worked so well together that we demolished the dish in no time. Again very reasonably priced at £12.95 and, with a portion of rice, enough for two to share. We were particularly enamoured with the naan bread. Why so? Well, these were honey glazed, which we’d not come across before and gave the bread an added flavour dimension – a perfect contrast to the spiciness of the curry. Indian restaurants are not known for their desserts, and Le Raj is no exception, but we couldn’t refuse the offer of some banana fritters to end the evening well. Just the right size portion – sticky, sweet and a perfect finale to a great meal. So does Le Raj still pass the KISS test? Did Le Raj tick all of our boxes? Yes. Would I be going back? Definitely. Would I thoroughly recommend Le Raj? Without hesitation. 48

We’re all looking for the perfect lifestyle: imagine an idyllic quayside setting surrounded by beautiful yachts, sipping an expertly-made coffee while people watching. If you live in Penarth near the marina your dream is close at hand.

CHART A NEW COURSE

Boat dealer and broker Dave Evans of Compass Yachts is well known for selling beautiful boats and now Dave’s daughter Kate Watts has opened Compass Coffee on the ground floor of Compass House, giving us the best of both worlds. We take time out to find out more. Dave, you’ve been in this industry for 40 years, what got you into it? It all started for me when I was about six and got into canoeing. I then moved into water skiing and reached a professional level. I then went onto working with some of the most famous and long established names in the motor boating industry. I have been credited with the 1990 Rinker Top Sales Award for the most vessels sold within a year in the world and, at one point, was the largest importer of Mariner outboards in the UK, amongst other awards.

What attracts people to sailing? We live on an island surrounded by water - it’s in our blood I think. Our customers love nothing more than sailing in Cardiff Bay, stopping for lunch and sailing back, or going further afield to the Bristol Channel and West Wales. They say the experience is so enjoyable and they don’t have to suffer the motorways to make the most of their leisure time. What kind of boats do you sell? We have a wide selection of motor and sail boats - and the Princess Yachts, the World’s leading luxury motor yacht. They sound expensive… People who buy boats are buying a lifestyle. We have boats here starting from less than £10k to over £750k. Once you’ve been hit by the sailing bug, you’ll never look back.

“ We’re also delighted to have been awarded a 5 Star Hygiene Award which we’re very proud of.” 52

So did you think opening a coffee shop made perfect sense Kate? Yes, while I still have a large presence within the boat sales of Compass Yachts, I felt I needed something of my own. As I have a background in catering, it felt like the right thing to do. Of course, the wonderful location helps! You haven’t been open long, how have things been? Amazing. I couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve had to take on more staff to cope with demand. The good weather we’ve enjoyed recently has certainly helped. Customers love the outdoor patio space - being able to enjoy a light snack and a hot or cold drink while watching the world go by. What do you offer customers? I wanted to keep things simple, especially to start off with, so we offer freshly made sandwiches and light snacks, and delicious cakes made by two wonderful local ladies. We also offer all day breakfasts which are hugely popular.

Who are your customers? Locals and people from further afield. We’re not far from Cardiff, with the barrage links, so we’re seeing more and more people from Cardiff Bay too, which is really nice. We’re becoming something of a destination. What do you think brings them here? We’ve got lots to offer. We’re seeing lots of cyclists stopping by as they can see their bikes when they’re eating or drinking al fresco. Also families with young children and dog walkers. We’re lucky to have plenty of car parking and we also have a bus stop just outside which runs on the hour. We’re also delighted to have been awarded a 5 Star Hygiene Award which we’re very proud of. We like what you’ve done with the place, especially the porthole window and the blue colour scheme. Thank you. I did the design myself. I wanted to keep it clean and simple. People also comment on the works of art by Lisa Mair Jones on the walls.

The true test of a good coffee shop is when customers return. Are they? They certainly are! We’ve also introduced take away coffees and loyalty cards. We’re looking forward to the real summer months and if this lovely weather continues, we’re likely to be very busy indeed. We’re already gaining lots of loyal customers who seem to like what we’re offering. 53

It’s a well known fact that clients are loyal to a hair salon and are happy to travel great distances to follow their chosen stylist. There aren’t many hair salons however that can boast clients from Dubai and Guam.

SATCHELLS

We chat to Salon Manager Beth Crofts to find out more about Satchells. When was Satchells established? In April 2008. James was running the salon alone in the beginning. I joined in the July and Angharad the following July. Molly joined us in May 2012 and Bethan, our newest stylist, has been with us a few weeks. Tell us more about your team at Satchells? We’re very proud of our team. James, the salon owner and artistic director, started his career thirteen years ago after he moved to Wales. He worked in a salon in Llantwit Major, where he gained his qualifications. While there he won Trainee Hairdresser of the Year Award for the Vale and Cardiff. After completing his NVQ level 3, James moved on to a Cardiff based salon (a world-wide company), where he gained further knowledge and understanding of hair. After that, he moved to Bristol, where he continued hairdressing for two years.

He returned to the Vale to open his own salon, Satchells. I started my career ten years ago in a salon in Boverton. I then moved on to a popular Cowbridge salon for two years to further my career, and was trained to a very high standard in all aspects of hairdressing. I joined Satchells as a stylist in 2008 and gained many loyal clients and was soon promoted to senior stylist. After four years I decided to take a year out to work in Australia and gain even more experience. I returned to Satchells in 2013 as salon manager and am responsible for the current rebranding of Satchells. I have also been nominated for Female Stylist of the Year in the Welsh Hair and Beauty Awards. Angharad, our stylist, has been with us since 2009 when she began her hairdressing career. She is currently working towards her NVQ level 3. After entering a creative hair up competition with Salon Cymru, Angharad has become a very confident and talented stylist. 54

Bethan is the newest member of our team and joins us as our new stylist, again from a Cowbridge salon where she completed her training. Bethan is currently working towards her NVQ level 3 with our in-house trainer. We look forward to seeing her grow within the salon. Molly is our graduate stylist. After completing her in-house training with us for two years, she will be starting her NVQ level 3 this year. Molly is the youngest, and liveliest, member of our team. She is very friendly and confident and we are sure she will be a fabulous stylist. Where do your clients come from? Our clients come from all over south Wales, from the surrounding villages of Ewenny, Porthcawl and Cowbridge to Swansea, Cardiff, London and even places as far as Dubai and Guam!

“We try to ensure that we have a good mix of professionalism and fun.”

Do you offer hair cutting and styling for men and children? Yes, we welcome anyone to the salon, and as we work on a tier system, we have prices to suit all. How do your clients know about you? Mainly from word of mouth as most of our clients have been recommended to us by existing clients, which is very flattering. We also have a Facebook and Twitter account which have proven popular. We try to update our Facebook account daily to keep clients in the know about what’s happening in the salon and promote any upcoming events or special discounts/offers for that day. What products do you use? We have used Wella Professional products from day one and believe that they give the best results. Do you offer discounts? We offer a student discount every Tuesday, an OAP discount every Wednesday and an NHS discount every day.

We also offer a Colour Loyalty Card and incentivise Recommend a Friend. Why do you think your clients come to you? Our clients have always told us that they feel so comfortable and relaxed in the salon. We try to ensure that we have a good mix of professionalism and fun so that our clients have the best possible experience.

Any plans for the future? We are looking to take part in more competitions, expand the team and continue creating the perfect experience for our clients.

What about brides-to-be? We love brides-to-be and offer a fabulous bridal package which ensures that the bridal party has our undivided attention. We all like to be involved on a bride’s big day - however, Beth and Angharad are our go-to girls for hair up! What are Satchells’ main achievements? We have achieved so much in the last six years. Opening the salon with only one stylist and now we have a team of five and are looking to employ more and more staff as our reputation grows. 55

The recent completion of the rather beautiful Penarth Pier Pavilion and the development that is now home to Michelin Starred chef, James Sommerin, has ensured that Penarth’s esplanade looks its very best this summer. Penarth is a grand place indeed, with its Victorian and Edwardian architecture and enviable position overlooking Penarth Marina and Cardiff Bay, it is home to some of the most expensive property in Wales. With its beautiful parks, vibrant town centre and commanding views over the Severn Estuary, Penarth reinforces our view that some of the best things in life are free.

Independent Sales and Lettings Agents

As an independent, family-established practice, with over 35 years’ experience in the hearing aid industry, Scott Wroe aims to provide impartial advice on hearing aids to ensure the best solution for their customers. In 2012, the family opened their Penarth branch and it’s been an overwhelming success.

GREAT SCOTT!

So how are things going since you’ve opened? Extremely well. We were pleasantly surprised when we opened for the demand for our services and the practice is growing year on year.

What is the benefit of being an Independent Hearing practice? When we see our clients we have the facility to prescribe any make or model on the market, this enables us to meet clients specific needs.

What do you feel is the main reason people come to you? Initially we thought it was our location and the fact that we are an independent practice, but now it seems the majority of our business comes from referrals and recommendations, which we believe is due to our high levels of customer service.

Do you provide an ongoing service for your customers? When we dispense a hearing aid we include a full aftercare package which is tailored to the clients’ needs. This can range from six monthly or yearly check-up appointments and our clients know that if they need anything in between, all they need to do is contact us to make an appointment.

“My aid has given me a new lease of life and I can now hear on the telephone. My children and friends cannot get over the change in me.” 64

Any exciting new products that are changing the market now? Phonak, one of the leading hearing aid manufacturers has launched their own telephone that connects automatically to the clients hearing aids. The results have been superb with many clients who struggled with using the telephone now finding they can talk to family and friends with no problems whatsoever. We also have a new range of hearing aids from the Danish manufacturer, Widex, that have provided excellent results for people who struggle in noisy situations and the new GNresound Linx hearing aid that can connect to the new iPhone 5 and iPads. Hearing technology has made considerable strides in recent years and continues to do so. Any new services being provided from the centre? We can now provide ear syringing at the centre as well as full ear protection services which can include custom made ER music, noise and sleep plugs.

Mrs S Smith Brilliant service in every respect Mr. J.P. Meiklejohn Since having hearing aids I have realised how much better daily life can be. Starting a new business can sometimes be a leap of faith but on April 2nd 2014, Andrew Nash and Matthew Hobbs felt they were ready to take the risk. Ironic, given that their enterprise is helping the rest of us reduce ours.

SAFETY FIRST What if someone already has an arrangement with another company? If you’re a private dwelling or a business with a burglar alrm, CCTV system (or both) installed, we can take these over quite easily. We’re pretty confident we can beat most customers’ maintenance and monitoring packages. What about monitored systems? Do you offer those? We are accredited by the SSAIB which means we can offer monitored alarms with full police response and insurance approved alarm systems. Andrew has over seven years sales experience in this industry and Matt has over sixteen years engineering experience in Fire & Security industry. We caught up with them at VOG HQ in Barry. What services do you provide? Burglar alarms (including dummy security), CCTV and fire alarms. We also design and install access control systems and gate and barrier packages. Emergency and security lighting is also on the menu. We offer a pretty wide range of services. Customers will usually have one or two of these. What areas do you cover? We do a lot of local work in Barry and across the Vale but work is now coming in from across South Wales. We’re also doing more across the bridge in the South West and along the M4 corridor both east and west.

What type of clients do you attract? We have a wide variety of clients that include domestic customers, small businesses, property management companies (where we are responsible for the testing and inspections), housing associations, electrical contractors and multi-chain companies like LDS Motor Factors and Domino’s.

“ We offer the latest equipment at affordable prices and, with our price promise, we’re confident we can beat any like for like quote!.”

What do you think sets you apart? We win a lot of business by listening to our customers needs and finding them a solution that best suits them. We take the time to explain why it will suit them. We offer the latest equipment at affordable prices and, with our price promise, we’re confident we can beat any like for like quote! What are your ambitions for VOG? We want to be known as the best, most recognised, and trusted security installer in South Wales.

Some of the best restaurants in the Vale hide behind unassuming facades. The Jaipur in Llantwit Major is the perfect example. I’ve walked past its entrance hundreds of times and, I’ll be honest, it never really caught my attention.

HIDDEN TREASURE

If a friend hadn’t recommended Jaipur recently, I probably would never have gone there. I’m so glad he did. The Hidden Treasure headline might sound a little dramatic but, really, this super restaurant is now officially on my hot list (and not because it serves curry). With hot in mind, the first thing I’d like to say is the food here is spicy, and perfectly so. Yes, they can rustle up a curry that will blow your ears off but that’s not what Jaipur is about. Chatting to the owners it’s clear that the passion is for flavours and, if what we ordered is anything to go by, they have achieved that.

“ Opened in 2011, Jaipur prides itself on offering exclusive dishes not available anywhere else. The cuisine is Bangladeshi with Indian influences.”

Opened in 2011, Jaipur prides itself on offering exclusive dishes not available anywhere else. The cuisine, they are keen to point out, is Bangladeshi with some Indian influences. Refreshingly, the restaurant also has a veggie only selection. I asked one of the owners why they opened in Llantwit Major. He explained that they had looked at several locations around the Vale but had come to the conclusion that the people in Llantwit Major were very friendly. Llantwit certainly has a good ‘vibe’ if you’ll excuse the cool, surfy expression but then Llantwit has a rather wonderful beach so I think it’s earned the right. As we’re talking about vibe, Jaipur certainly has a great ambience. The décor is beautifully tasteful with cool (there I go again), neon and restful lighting. Guests will also appreciate that it’s fully air conditioned – most welcome on a warm summer’s evening. The service is flawlessly discrete. As our food arrived, we discussed how the restaurant sources its produce. 72

We were assured that all the dishes were cooked fresh and Jaipur use only the very best ingredients. They added that their ingredients may not be the cheapest and the quality of the food clearly reflects this. We shared two dishes: Jaipur Pathila Tender strips of chicken prepared with very special herbs and spices including coriander, dry mint, garlic and yoghurt in a rich tangy sauce (£8.50) and Bengal Chicken (Chef recommended) an exotic dish of tender lamb or chicken marinated in yoghurt and fresh herbs and spices cooked with mince meat and potatoes served with pilau rice and salad (£11.50). I loved the Jaipur Pathila but the Bengal Chicken was the star of the show - beautiful, and dipping my tasty naan in the sauce not to waste any, I honestly couldn’t stop eating it until there was none left. We rounded off our meal with some excellent floater coffees and chatted to some of the other diners. There were a group of chaps from the St Athan base

“Jaipur certainly has a great ambience. The décor is beautifully tasteful with cool neon and restful lighting.” and several couples and groups. We got talking to Llantwit Major tradesman, John Balfrey, who was in collecting his take-away (did I mention take away?). John had been coming to Jaipur since it opened and rated it highly. He was a regular diner and also ordered regularly from the take-away menu. Apparently, John informed us, the most popular dish is Chicken Naga - we really must try that next time.

Jaipur Bangladeshi and Indian Cuisine Compton House, East Street Llantwit Major CF61 1XY

Yes, after our visit to Jaipur there will certainly be a next time. This is a brilliant Bangladeshi/Indian restaurant with its roots firmly planted in the community (Jaipur supports the local football and cricket team) and one that is now officially on our list of the Vales’ best restaurants. If you haven’t tried this hidden treasure, you really must.

With blue plaques a plenty, Llantwit Major boasts a lot of history but that’s not all this great coastal town has to shout about. Llantwit’s great beach creates a welcome break in the cliffs of the Vale’s majestic Heritage Coastline. Popular with surfers and families, the beach reinforces Llantwit Major’s laid back lifestyle. The town also has several excellent pubs and restaurants so if you’re looking to chill this summer, Llantwit Major is the place.

Being parents, James and Deb Wildi of Llantwit Major were thoroughly looking forward to a weekend away without the children. Tranquility and pampering were on their list of must-haves and The Corran, near Laugharne, certainly didn’t disappoint. Deb tells us about their weekend.

PARADISE FOUND

From our warm and friendly welcome (always apparent in Wales, but even more so here) to the little touches in the cottage, such as the prepared log fire, we knew that this was to be a weekend to remember. During the stay, I had two treatments in the fabulous spa – their gorgeous Prescriptive facial and an Indian head massage. As an ex -holistic therapist myself, I must admit to being the fussiest client known to man, however, everything was perfect.

“The venue, the ambience, and most of all the treatments were first class.” My therapist was extremely professional and took on board my request for a firmer massage than usual - my knots are legendary and the poor girl really had her work cut out for her, but my knots are no more and my neck and shoulders now feel fantastic.

The consultation prior to the facial took into account my skin’s needs and the products used, as well as the delicate way they were applied left my skin not only glowing, but feeling like velvet. The whole spa experience was topped off by a beautifully fluffy robe and a calming cup of camomile tea enjoyed from a bone china cup in their relaxation suite. My husband and I then enjoyed the pool and Jacuzzi, before getting ready for the 5 star meal that followed later that evening. Wow! This was 5 star food at its best. Melt-in-the-mouth lamb, vegetables perfectly al-dente, followed by a chocolate dessert to die for. We ended the summer evening sitting out on the decking of our cottage, looking out at the beautiful views of the West Wales countryside. 78

The setting for this hotel really is superb. The only sound to be heard was the very occasional distant bleat of a lamb. As we sipped our delicious wine and took in these sights and sounds, we smiled as we knew we’d get to do the same all over again the next day, which we did, as well as visiting the very nearby Laugharne beach and Dylan Thomas’ boathouse with its stunning sea views. I wanted a weekend of relaxation and pampering, but what I received at The Corran was a whole lot more. In my humble opinion, The Corran is a little piece of five star heaven hidden away in the most beautiful part of Wales. Counting the days until we can go back.

“This was 5 star food at its best. Melt-in-the-mouth lamb, vegetables perfectly al-dente, followed by a chocolate dessert to die for.”

M ADE IN THE SHADE

Hugh and Claire Connolly of Rhoose wanted to make more of their living space and decided on an orangery. We met them at their lovely home to find out why they chose designers Dean and Leanne Edmonds of Vale Orangeries to create the beautiful new addition to their home.

How did you hear about Vale Orangeries? We were browsing online for extension ideas and came across their website www.valeorangeries.co.uk

Did they exceed your expectations? Definitely - they were always available via email or phone if we had any questions or queries and willing to assist with all aspects of the work.

The orangery lets lots of light in - it’s lovely, even on a winter’s day we love looking at the garden. It’s great to open the bi-folding doors on a sunny day and make the garden a part of the house.

Did you get quotes from other companies? No, because we had our heart set on a Vale Orangery after seeing their work and also visiting one of their previous builds. We knew it was exactly what we wanted.

Did they help with internal décor? They did offer some great ideas, but we had a good idea of what we wanted.

Would you recommend Vale Orangeries to friends and colleagues? Definitely. We’re really pleased with all aspects of the build from planning through to completion.

What impressed you most about Dean and Leanne? They were professional, really helpful and had some great ideas. Did you have your own ideas on how you wanted it to look? We had an idea of the size of extension and also the bi-folding doors, but they also gave us some ideas about the glass lantern in the roof and the feature window. We weren’t sure we could have a full knock-through to the main house and they explained that this was possible and how it could be done. It was far easier than we expected.

What impressed you most about the work they carried out? They are professional and have an expertise in orangeries that I don’t believe you would get from a general builder or extension company. The timescale was also spot on. How has your new Vale Orangery changed your lives? Our orangery is now our main living space. It’s nice that we can spend time all together as a family while having the space to do ‘our own thing’. It’s also lovely having a space to entertain and still be part of everything else going on.

“ The orangery lets lots of light in - it’s lovely.” 93

If you’re fortunate enough to have a little set aside to invest, and you like the finer things in life, then there could probably be no better investment than classic, pre-loved timepieces. Timeless brands such as Cartier, Frank Muller, Jaeger, Patek Philippe and Chopard will not only hold their value but will, in most cases, increase in value over time.

A TIMELY INVESTMENT

A new watch, like almost all luxury items, depreciates in value by up to 30% after you first wear it. Pre-owned classic watches, however, will hold their value. Over time they can be worth even more than the original purchase cost.

With due care and regular maintenance, a quality watch will last you a lifetime. David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff ’s Royal Arcade has many more watches to choose from. They also purchase watches and welcome part exchange. Whether you’re a seller or a buyer of classic, pre-owned watches, there’s no reason to go anywhere else. TOP RIGHT Corum Gents Watch RRP £25,000.00 David Edwards price NOW £10,500.00 FIRST ROW, LEFT Blue Dial Rolex RRP £8,200.00 David Edwards price NOW £5,500.00 FIRST ROW, RIGHT Gold Dial Rolex RRP £7,250.00 David Edwards price NOW £4,100.00 SECOND ROW, LEFT Omega RRP £4,750.00 David Edwards price NOW £3,250.00 SECOND ROW, RIGHT Ladies Diamond Rolex RRP £9,250.00 David Edwards price NOW £7,250.00 BOTTOM, RIGHT Franc Muller RRP £14,500.00 David Edwards price NOW £5,000.00

“The type of place you can browse without feeling obliged to buy.”

At David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff ’s beautiful and historic Royal Arcade, Jack Cohen and Deborah Rawle are there to explain, inform and educate those of you who may be uncertain about choosing a preloved watch, jewellery or gems. Their comprehensive knowledge is borne out of their combined fifty years’ experience and the solid reputation on which David Edwards Jewellers have always successfully traded. David Edwards Jewellers is the type of place you can browse without feeling awkward or obliged to buy. Jack and Deborah realise that some people can be nervous about buying pre-owned watches but David Edwards guarantees the provenance of each item. 94

Keen to ensure it is at the heart of the booming and exciting independent retailers adorning the town, with their bespoke and excellent products, Arbuthonot’s recently opened its second practice on Cornerswell Road.

SPEC-TACULAR!

Stocking brands including Ray Ban, Oakley, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Dior, Lacoste and Miss Sixty and many more it’s firmly establishing itself as the destination store for all things eyes. Arbuthnot’s prides itself on two things: ensuring it provides the most comprehensive and cutting-edge eye care and offering its customers the best and most sought-after frames and sunglasses from around the world. We speak to James Davies, partner and optometrist (and born and bred Penarthian), about why Arbuthnot’s is leading the way with its optical offerings. So James, what makes you stand out from other opticians in the Vale? As optometrists, we’re meticulous and offer one of the most comprehensive eye examinations in the Vale. At our practices, we allow for double the appointment time most high-street opticians shops allocate. People don’t like being rushed in and out. It’s important our customers feel like they’re getting the attention they need, so we spend much longer with patients.

Because of this we also see many referrals from other health professionals for evaluation of more complicated cases. We also know many people can find eye tests daunting, so they’ll always find us to be patient and empathetic and happy to explain everything that we do as we do it. People can feel reassured they’ll be looked after and that we genuinely care. Arbuthnot’s complements its focus on a ultra high standards of clinical care with offering customers the very latest in vision technology, why is this important? You use your eyes from the moment you wake to the moment you sleep every day of your life so they deserve to be looked after well. We know not all lenses are the same whether they are spectacle or contact lenses and we are fortunate to be in a profession where manufacturers are constantly striving to make new and innovative products.

“ It’s important our customers feel like they’re getting the attention they need.” 96

We pride ourselves on always offering our clients the newest and best options based on their specific requirements. The quality of certain lenses and therefore the comfort and ease of wear will significantly differ between different brands. Our philosophy is your eyes should always use the best which is why we’re a SEIKO lens specialist. We’re also a Johnson and Johnson Acuvue contact lens centre of excellence and have had great success with the award winning Sauflon Clariti range. We always work with every client on a bespoke basis to find the right solution for them.

Is it true Arbuthnot’s sends a team of frame-finders across the world every year to bring back the latest designs and fashions? We‘ve been to both Italy and Germany this year and got some amazing new stock. We’re obsessed with sourcing the best and latest frames, that not only look incredible but are of the best quality. Customers will find frames with us that they won’t find in any other shop in South Wales, maybe even the UK. They’ll walk away with a truly individual look that nobody else will have, as we’ve established relationships with brands that will only be present in elite optical practices like Arbuthnot’s.

Can you tell us some of the brands customers can get their hands on at Arbuthnot’s? As well as all the big names like Ray Ban, Gucci, Dior, Oakley and Lacoste, we’re also introducing little-known brands to customers too; brands that until now have been the domain of the rich and famous. There are a lot of amazing brands coming from Europe, especially Denmark. We stock Lindberg, a peerless Danish manufacturer of rimless frames with a client list ranging from the Queen to Brad Pitt! Orgreen is a fellow Danish manufacture producing handmade, beautifully fashionable and comfortable frames using only the best materials. And ProDesign is yet another example of the cutting edge design that Denmark has become famous for in the optical world.

“ Our new William Morris London range is proving very popular.” And how are us Brits doing in the optical world? Really well! We’re seeing some super cool brands entering the market and we love the British brands. Our new William Morris London range is proving very popular; its frames are flying out of the door! We particularly like their vintage styles which are really fashionable and a total hit with our younger customers. And the great thing is customers won’t find any brand we stock cheaper on the local high streets. 97

Sounds great. Do I need an appointment? Anyone can come in and browse our range of glasses or sunglasses at any time. There is always a friendly face and experienced dispensing optician (who specialises in finding people the perfect frames and lenses) to offer you a coffee and help you choose a new look. Eye tests do need an appointment but it’s really easy. Anyone can give us a call and we’ll book them with very short waiting times. We’re currently taking new patients thanks to our expansion into Penarth.

Whether it’s a sumptuous country house border or a terraced house postage stamp, the talking point of any garden at this time of year is ‘colour’.

GARDENING WITH COLOUR Colour creates power in a garden, it can change the sense of space and instantly give a focal point to a specific area. Colour is the most potent weapon in the gardener’s armoury. Understanding the power of colour will help you put a personal mark on your garden, it can excite and even shock. The way to use colour in your garden is as personal to you as the decoration of your home. What seems subtle to one person may seem dull to another. What matters is to use colour in your own way, if you like it, leave it, if you don’t, move it. Cottage garden planting can offer masses of mixed colour, the effect can be exhilarating and it’s definitely worth trying to achieve. The answer in this case is plants, plants and more plants, and all with colour. In high Summer that explosion of colour is just waiting for you, if you are limited by space then pots are the way to go. It doesn’t happen over night, sometimes it takes years to achieve that garden that people start to talk about, even if it’s only for a week or just a day it’s worth doing.

“Understanding the power of colour will help you put a personal mark on your garden, it can excite and even shock.” 98

A new Welsh food business has been launched that will offer an exclusive insight into Welsh food and drink producers. Food Adventure is the brainchild of Aberdare based husband and wife team, Carol and Mark Adams. We chat to Carol to find out more about this exciting project.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

What does Food Adventure offer? Food Adventure will provide food tours containing behind-the-scenes visits to vineyards, farms, restaurants and hotels across many popular South Wales foodie destinations, with the chance to meet independent and local producers and sample their produce. Where did the idea come from? We are the couple behind the successful Corpulent Capers food blog, and we’ve been blogging about the food culture in Wales for over seven years. We’re selfproclaimed ‘foodies’ and we’re often to be found exploring farmers’ markets or visiting local pubs across the country, but are particularly passionate about supporting Welsh food producers and quality seasonal products. Living on the edge of Brecon Beacons National Park, we recognise that Wales has some of the finest produce on the planet, and in recent years have become more and more interested in finding out more about what we eat.

What are you hoping to achieve with this venture? We are hoping to help others understand where exceptional produce comes from and share what we’ve learnt over the years of running our popular food blog. Food Adventure will offer either a full or half-day tour, including lunch at a top foodie destination in South Wales. Each tour will not only provide an opportunity to learn about local production processes, but will allow ‘food tourists’ to meet independent food and drink producers and find out more about their companies. They will also be able to enjoy foraging in the Welsh rural countryside and take part in food demonstrations from top chefs and cookery tutors.

“ Food Adventure offer either a full or half-day tour, including lunch at a top foodie destination in south Wales.”

What events can we expect? We’ve got a fantastic line-up of events including: n 9 August Otley Brewery Masterclass n 30 August Behind the Scenes with Trealy Farm: Monmouthshire n 19 September Discover Wales Hidden Gem, Welsh Wine: Monmouthshire n 27 September A Foraging Feast Brecon n 12 September Learning to pair Sherry with Food at Bar 44 Please check our website or sign up to our newsletter for information on new tours.

Tracy Wadsworth has been in the beauty industry for the last sixteen years. We asked her why she set up The Jasmine Rooms at the popular Copthorne Hotel, Culverhouse Cross.

THE L AST WORD

What are your most requested treatments for the summer months? Definitely lashes and nails and semi permanent makeup, in time for holidays. Semi permanent makeup helps mature clients appear more youthful, the young more beautiful and the fitness clients can look made up without actually having any makeup on. We are also delighted to offer Elemis products and treatments. Also I’m a fully qualified Nouveau Contour technician and work with the Katie Piper Foundation carrying out medical tattooing. Introduce us to your staff? Lauren is our receptionist/admin, Danielle is our therapist and Bethan is our junior receptionist. Where do you like to eat? The Beach Tree as its local and consistently good. What three words best describe you? Positive, loyal, bubbly. What are you good at? Anything creative. What are you not so good at? Being a perfectionist, I don’t like to try things that I don’t think I would be good at.

What is your background Tracy? I worked as a sole trader at my salon in Cardiff, which was also called The Jasmine Rooms and in a partnership at The Lash and Brow Boutique, in the same street. Why did you decide to go it alone again? Although I loved what I did and my business partner and I worked well together, I felt that we were going in different directions. I had a very different vision. I believe that a beauty salon should be a sanctuary for women and I had always dreamt of being within a hotel environment. I have been a member of The Copthorne hotel’s gym for a number of years as I live locally, so it made perfect sense to base my business here.

“ I believe that a beauty salon should be a sanctuary for women.”

What treatments does The Jasmine Rooms offer? We offer all beauty treatments for the face and body. I also specialise in semi permanent makeup, lashes and nails and HD Brows. Actually, I was the first person in Cardiff to offer HD Brows and Let’s Go Lashes. Semi permanent makeup is also something I specialise in. Why do you think clients come to The Jasmine Rooms? Honesty. I don’t suggest a client needs a particular treatment if he or she doesn’t need it. Clients have said that they love the hotel environment as it makes them feel special. A lot of our clients are staying at the hotel and they are already in a relaxed mood, so adding a treatment with us is a bonus to their stay. Also parking is a huge bonus. There is ample parking here which you certainly don’t get in the town centre, which helps with our clients’ stress levels! 106

Who do you rely on when times are tough? My husband Darren. What are your proudest moments? Raising our two beautiful children, Macauley 18 and Livvey 12. Exclusive Vale Life Offer New clients will receive a free file and polish worth £10 (20 mins) by mentioning Vale Life. Offer limited to first 20 new beauty clients.
