www.valelife.co.uk 0845 130 6452 Cardiff House Cardiff Road Barry CF63 2AW Passionate about the Vale of Glamorgan We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to Vale Life. Visit www.valelife.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. WELCOME As I write this, we are in the middle of the June/July heatwave. There’s nothing like successive sunny days to make us appreciate that living in Wales’ most southerly county is truly heaven sent. Yes, we’d all like to earn more money, be able to afford nice things and holidays, but it’s the simple things that truly enrich us; walks along the beach (with or without a dog) taking in the views (with or without a Magnum ice cream!). No surprises - I’m in the ‘with’ camp! We’ve always championed our independent businesses at Vale Life - they matter. They are the fabric that binds our high streets. They give our county character. I know I bang on about it but please, give them your support. I know it’s easy to press a few keys on your computer and have your goods delivered to your door but, pretty soon, if we’re not careful, that’s all we’ll have and what a dull existence that would be! Our support for the great work of the RNLI continues with a re-run of last year’s amazing Penarth Fashion Week (see more on page 34). Plans are already well underway for what promises to be an even bigger and better event.

Choose Life

The seaside town of Porthcawl are having their own Fashion and Food Festival fortnight and we’re delighted to be the media sponsors for this as well (see more on pages 14 and 15). Lots to look forward to in the coming months. Please like and follow FB pages for these two events. Here’s hoping you all enjoy the rest of the summer and we’ll see you again in the autumn. There’s lots to look forward to. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

When Phil Harris was set to marry his fiancé Emily, he needed suits for himself and his father-in law. He had heard great things about Hawkes in Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, and decided to pay owner Russell Scott-Lawson a visit. The rest is history.

SARTORIA ELEGANTE! STYLISH TAILORING BY HAWKES

How long have you been together? Emily and I have been together for almost ten years. How did you propose? We went on a holiday to California two years ago and I proposed on a pier at sunrise. We were jet- lagged, so went for a jog early in the morning. This is when I popped the question. When was the big day? Our wedding was on the 6th of May 2018. Where did you get married? We got married in Tuscany in a small town called Gambassi. How did you hear about Hawkes? I lived in Cardiff so have walked passed it a few times.

Hawkes was also recommended to me by a friend. Did you go anywhere else first? I went to have a suit fitted in London but decided it was too far to commute for fittings. Why did you choose Hawkes? He was based in Cardiff, so it was more convenient for me to go in for regular fittings. Russell was great! Are you a customer of Hawkes? I have only ever bought my wedding suit from Hawkes but will definitely go there again after the service I received. What did Russell supply to you? He supplied me with a 3-piece Without Predjudice suit that he tailored to my size, making it a nice slim fit. 10

My father-in-law chose to have a suit made by Russell with a very unique reverse peak collar. The collar had to be made locally and he was thrilled with the result. His experience with Russell and Hawkes was the same as mine, and he was equally thrilled with how everything turned out. Describe your suit… It is a blue suit with a blue chequered waistcoat. The suit itself is a solid colour with no patterns. I would say it was slim fitting, but I am not a skinny guy so, to the average eye, it would just look like a well-fitted suit. In fact, I have always been convinced that suits tend to look better on skinny guys. Suits don’t tend to hang off my frame very well as I have done some weight training over the years.

However, I was thrilled with how it turned out and felt it is the first suit I have ever worn that has suited my frame. How long did they take to make? The suit was available immediately and, after a few tweeks, was ready to pick up in a few weeks. Were you pleased with the service offered to you? Thoroughly. I felt that Russell cared about giving me the best product he could. He was always there to meet me and dealt with me personally, which I appreciated. How did the suits look on the big day? The suits looked fab on the day. I had many comments about how well fitted they were.

Would you recommend Hawkes to others? Yes absolutely. I feel the service I got there was five stars, and the suits were perfect. The quality and fit are so good that I can see me wearing mine for many years to come. Where did you go on honeymoon? We stayed in Italy and travelled down the coast. It was lovely.

“I have only ever bought my wedding suit from Hawkes but will definitely go there again after the service I received. 11

SAVING LIVES

A brief history of Porthcawl RNLI A lifeboat station was originally established in Porthcawl in 1860 although this was closed in 1902 following the closure of the port. In 1965 the need for a lifeboat station in the town became evident following an increase in Porthcawl’s popularity as a holiday resort. The RNLI stationed one of their new experimental inshore lifeboats at the town, known as a D Class. Adverts were placed in local newspapers to recruit a crew to man the lifeboat. In 2015 the station celebrated the 50th anniversary of an inshore lifeboat station being established at Porthcawl. Over the years, several inshore lifeboats have been stationed at Porthcawl and today the station operates both an Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat and a D Class inshore lifeboat. 14

The station has an operational team of 36 who are all volunteers, and generally fall into one of three roles: Launch Management, Crew and Shore Helpers. All carry pagers and are expected to respond to a pager alert within minutes. The crew are normally paged by UK Coastguard who request a launch of one, or both, of the lifeboats. Once on the water, the incident is managed by UK Coastguard although the helmsman of the lifeboat is responsible for both the lifeboat and its crew. In 2014 Porthcawl RNLI station was the busiest of all RNLI stations in Wales with 73 launches and 60 people rescued. In 2015 the station was the busiest RNLI inshore lifeboat station in Wales launching 73 times. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Interested in Volunteering? If you’re interested in volunteering at Porthcawl and you have the spare time required to make a commitment, then get in touch. Contact the station directly by phone, through our website, via our social media pages or by going down to the station to find out more about the volunteer roles currently available at Porthcawl. www.porthcawlfashionandfood festival.co.uk

Oxford House Menswear has been supplying quality men’s clothing in sizes small to 6xl from their store in Pontycymer, near Bridgend for nearly 45 years. With a large and loyal customer base, the focus is all about high levels of customer service, exceptional value for money and an all-round great shopping experience.

for their high-profile stunts – drinking champagne at half time, taking to the field in fancy dress, and wearing pink bow ties for big matches. At their south Wales based store, Oxford House is one of only a handful of official Eden Park stockists in the whole of Wales. With a comprehensive range of men’s Eden Park products, including smart casual shirts, polo shirts, knitwear, jerseys and jackets, all available in store or online in sizes medium to 5xl.

April 2018 saw the launch of their new website www.pinkbowmenswear.com, a site designed and set up to sell just Eden Park men’s clothing, due to the increased demand the brand has created. Without a doubt, Eden Park is a picture-perfect success story; starting from small beginnings, the business quickly grew into one of the UK’s major suppliers of rugby inspired fashion. Founded in 1987, Eden Park’s pink bow tie logo harks back to Mesnel’s days in the back line at Racing Club de Paris, known as ‘Le Showbizz’ 17

Being able to claim a spot on Cowbridge’s prestigious main street is an honour few businesses can claim to have accomplished. But in the later months of 2016 Leila Thornton managed just that and so King Fox was quickly born.

K ING FOX Leila’s family had a strong connection with the main thoroughfare of Cowbridge; not only did her Grandmother trade along the street but her father did too, the former in charge of the famous ‘Bettina’s’ with the latter in charge of a popular cafe. After years in London Leila decided to move away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and to move somewhere a bit more refined, a place that had a strong family connection. In the years since Leila has not regretted moving to Cowbridge, stating how welcomed she was by the lovely local people when she first opened King Fox. Speaking of her business; the mens fashion store has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years. With bold and bright designs on offer, Leila receives constant compliments regarding her handpicked designs. “I try really hard to ensure that all of my clothes are good quality and fun, with as many from Europe or the UK as possible.

I think it is nice to support British designers whenever possible; this is why I stock John Smedley, Sunspel, Aquascutum, and Van Buck. All of whom make their products in the UK and Europe.”

In addition to those brands you will also be able to find a wonderful range of items from Eden Park, Orlebar Brown, GANT, Sunspel, Santinelli, Brühl, Magee 1866, Van Buck, John Smedley, Giordano, Stetson, Pantherella and Aquascutum. On a recent visit to Cowbridge Vale Life asked Leila what her best fashion recommendations were for the coming months. “Orlebar Brown make fabulous swim shorts, perfect for lounging around in the sun, each pair are guaranteed for 5 years and are designed with some wonderful photographic prints.

“The mens fashion store has gone from strength to strength.” 18

We also stock their plain blue Riviera Setter shorts, famously worn by Danial Craig in the movie ‘Skyfall’. Following on with the James Bond theme; Sunspel have been making a Riviera polo with a cotton mesh fabric since the 1950’s, a range of which can be found in store, which featured in ‘Casino Royale’ back in 2006. These items are still very much in fashion today. The fact that they are made up of cool, lightweight fabric means that you will never get too hot and that you’ll always look smart.”

BRIDGEND

Award for Home Care Agency - One of the world’s most trusted homecare providers Based on positive recommendations, Right At Home Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan is celebrating their Top 20 award from the UK’s biggest homecare review website homecare.co.uk. With a recommendation score of 9.9 out of 10, the Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan agency is one of just 11 home care providers in Wales to receive this accolade. In the face of recent publicity about failings in the home care system, such recognition represents a real badge of honour for the 25 dedicated staff. Delighted owner of Right At Home Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan, Gabriela Ablorsu, says, “Our ethos is to provide the care you would want for your own family. Sadly, in our sector, only one in five home care companies provide high quality care. Simply sharing a cup of tea and having a chat can make a huge difference to a person’s state of mind, reducing the significant problem of loneliness in the elderly.

Across our team of carers, training and administration, we excel in good communication, staff training and providing sufficient time for our carers to deliver the very best care.” Gabriela says the right staff are key to success. “Carers need to have a real passion for their caring role - it needs to come from the heart. We go the extra mile to match the personalities of the carer with the client and make them feel safe because of our unique ‘No Stranger’ policy to ensure that every carer is personally introduced. Every team member we appoint is fully trained by us and we have a strong focus on staff mentoring, retention and support to make staff feel valued and to provide career progression.”

One of the comments received on the Award website from the wife of a client echoes this approach, “The whole experience with this agency was a very positive one. The administration staff were very sympathetic, efficient, helpful, understanding and flexible organising care carefully that would adapt to a changing situation. The carer immediately adjusted to our household and integrated well. She provided physical and mental support to my husband at the most difficult time of his life.” For advice generally or for a brochure about Right At Home, see www.rightathomeuk.co.uk/the-vale or call our team: 01656 767422

Face Factor is an award-winning aesthetics and semi-permanent makeup salon in Porthcawl that combines expertise with passion, giving quality service from initial consultation to highly-professional treatments and aftercare.

FACE FACTOR Face Factor is the number one aesthetics and semi-permanent makeup salon in South Wales; a position which was cemented when they received the award for “Best Semi-Permanent Makeup Salon in Wales” at the Official Makeup Awards 2018. This accolade was won as a result of their innovative techniques, dedicated staff and state-of-the-art equipment.

Almost 10 years ago, Ros the owner of Face Factor, began extensive training with some of the world’s top semi-permanent makeup artists at Nouveau Contour.

It’s a tough course and Ros was one of the few in the class to see it through to the end, mastering a variety of intricate skills for delivering expert treatments.

Since this initial training, Ros has gained more than 20 diplomas and certificates for her skills and knowledge. She’s attended advanced training seminars and master classes and studied in Russia with world-renowned technician Alexander Sivak. After several years practicing as an individual, Ros opened the Face Factor salon in Porthcawl in 2015 - and since then the business has bloomed. 28

Face Factor offers a range of treatments that can be customised especially for you. Whether you simply want to avoid the hassle of applying makeup every day, or you wish to change and enhance your look – they can deliver exactly what you want. “We can give your eyes greater definition, enhance your eyebrows, plump your lips and increase your pout. We offer advanced facial treatments including dermaplaning for overall improved skin appearance,” says Ros. As well as offering cutting-edge semi-

Following its inception in 1984, Traveland has become a professional and personalised Cruise only Specialist. ‘Cruisers’ from across the Vale can enjoy real face time with Traveland’s expert team.

T RAVELAND CRUISE SPECIALISTS In 1987, because of the already years of exposure to cruise holidays by an individual director, it was decided that Traveland specialise in cruising. Over the following years the organisation actively recruited staff to further develop their knowledge, skills and personal qualities to a high standard. We talk to Jennifer Dixon, Marketing Manager. Jennifer, please tell us about your Porthcawl office… With our well establised office in Porthcawl staffed by, in many cases, long serving members of the team, Traveland is able to offer a service which ensures our clients receive a personable, knowledgeable and carefree opportunity to plan and enjoy their cruise options. So clients enjoy visiting the office to plan their cruise? Absolutely, visiting our offices allows you to meet individual members of staff in person and, maybe, make an appointment with someone of their choosing – perhaps someone they have arranged with before.

“ For more information call 0800 046 1377.”

Plus for convenience, clients can discuss and book their requirements over the telephone. Can you give us an example of what makes Traveland stand out from the crowd? Yes, here’s two great examples: Traveland has its own Transfer Service which is designed to convey you and your luggage to and from the cruise terminal at Southampton on a wide selection of 14 night+ cruises. T&C’s apply. Also we are proud of our policy to provide a caring and personal service to all our clients. Does Traveland offer a range of options? Traveland works closely with all major cruise lines and aims to ensure that every client enjoys the cruise of their dreams.

Blow Dry Bars have quickly risen to fame in America over the last few years and have finally crossed the big blue to make it to the British shores. These specialised hair salons strictly provide washing, blow drying, and hair styling treatments; perfect for adding that extra oomph to an already brilliant hair cut.

BLOWOUT B AR

It’s time to welcome Bridgend’s newest addition the BlowOut Bar! Resting in the skilled hands of Manager/Head stylist Emma Parry and her team, this specialised salon is the first of its kind in the area to offer its unique repertoire. With more than 10 years of salon management behind her, Salon owner, Kirsten Evans spotted a gap in the market for such a venture after her own woes at trying to fit in a hair styling regime around her own busy schedule. “Every time I wanted [just] a blow dry, salons were always very busy and requested an appointment in advance, something that was nearly always impossible for me as I was always busy myself!”

“ A Blow Dry Bar is different to the everyday salons that you can find on the high street.”

A Blow Dry Bar is different to the everyday salons that you can find on the high street these bars provide washing, blow drying, and hair styling to evolve your already brilliant cut hair into a perfect style, allowing you to look amazing and maintain that freshly styled feeling for much longer. Not content with just that Kirsten, based on the feedback of the already loyal customer base, have also included standard salon techniques to their already vast enterprise. Once inside you will find all range of blow dry treatments from Festival Hair, Wedding Hair, and Curly Blow Dry’s, in addition to the specialised BIG BLOW DRY that achieves incredible results with brushes and big curlers, the latter of which you can go home with to help prolong your wonderful curls. If that wasn’t enough they also provide Children Pamper Parties, Hen Parties, Special Events, and Weddings. 31

BlowOut Bar offers a unique service in a unique environment, full of stylists whose main focus is the finish of your hair. “Over the next year we plan to manufacture our own products with our BlowOut Logo and to expand into other towns in the surrounding areas. Until then our focus is on our Bridgend base alongside our wonderful staff, all of which have been specially hand picked in order to provide the best possible service for all ages.”

Having recently celebrated their eleventh year of business, View2Rent in Porthcawl are working hard to guarantee that the next decade is even better than the first. We chat to owner Gemma Williams-Jones to find out more.

VIEW2R ENT

How have things been since celebrating your decade in business? The past 12 months have been brilliant, we’ve met some lovely new clients and friends, the response we’ve had since moving to John Street has been extremely positive. Moving has been a great thing for us, we couldn’t be happier with how the business has developed and grown over the past year.

We heard in March this year you became an award winning business, can you tell us a little more? I still cant believe we won, I was honestly so shocked. After the great response we had from moving in to John Street I decided to enter the business in to the customer service excellence category within the South Wales Business Growth Awards. We heard just before Christmas that we had been shortlisted to attend the awards at the St Davids Hotel in Cardiff, so in February my husband Sam and our two members of staff Karen and Ali came with us.

The award category recognises businesses who have demonstrated the highest levels of customer service, we were up against some really good businesses so I honesty didn’t think for a second we would win. It was such a fantastic evening and to be able to call ourselves an award winning agency is just amazing. Plus the fact the award was the only award to be independently judged by a mystery shopper makes it just that bit more special. As an experienced agent what tips would you give to any landlord looking to let their property through an agency? Always review the agent. I think that’s so important. Anyone can tell you how good they are, so take the time to find out what others have said, discuss their experiences. Putting your investment in the hands of an agent is a big decision and one you want to get right. Most businesses these days have a Facebook page so I would check their reviews - Google reviews are also very helpful. 32

I would also spend some time chatting and discussing options with the agent, get to know them a little. We work on a unique and personal basis with our landlords, tenants and tradesmen, and find this gets the most results for everyone.

What does the rest of 2018 and beyond hold for View2Rent? We’ve got a few things in mind, I don’t want to say too much at the moment but I’m very excited at the possibilities we’ve been discussing for 2019. I’m just incredibly happy at how View2Rent has grown and very proud of the feedback we get from our clients. We’ve had a great year and I’m sure there are many more to come.

It was a full house at Paul Gentile Jewellers as the Gentile family and loyal staff welcomed customers past and present to celebrate forty years of successful trading, and to introduce their new brand, Nomination.

PAUL GENTILE THE JEWELLERS

Paul Gentile the Jewellers continues to serve the Barry community and beyond, offering traditional jewellery services, state-of-the-art technology, creating, repairing and supplying fine jewellery and watches, as well as stocking some of the biggest brand names; and all this by staff members with a twenty-year average length of service record. They also offer a bespoke jewellery making service, ensuring that they can supply the needs of all customers whether it be off-the-shelf or custommade pieces.

“Nomination has a high pedigree.”

As well as brand favourites such as Thomas Sabo, Swarovski, Clogau, Troll Beads, Hot Diamonds, Emolzioni and Orli, the store are delighted to now offer the exciting brand, Nomination. Nomination has a high pedigree in the contemporary jewellery world, with all its pieces being made in Italy; these include necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets and watches. Most emblematic of the brand is the iconic ‘Composable’ bracelet, which, with its stainlesssteel links, can be personalised with letters, symbols and charms in stainless steel, yellow and rose gold, silver and coloured gemstones to communicate your message and make the ideal accessory for daytime or special occasions. 36

The event was a huge albeit bitter sweet event with many loyal customers raising a glass to the business’ founder Paul who sadly passed away recently. “I’m beyond excited at how the day has gone so far and would personally like to thank all of our loyal customers. Dad would have been delighted to see so many familiar faces,” said Michael Gentile. Do you have what it takes to become an online millionaire? If you’ve ever wanted to pursue your own business, perhaps selling your own homemade crafts or trading in antiques, with the rise of the internet, it’s never been easier, or has it?

ONLINE MILLIONAIRES As we’ve seen a decline on the high street, online marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon and Google Shopping are booming, but what are the challenges that small businesses face?

Over the past 5 years, millionaire businesses registered as sellers on eBay in the UK has jumped over 50%! Research undertaken by GS1 UK has shown that for many businesses, in particular Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), are choosing to sell their products through online marketplaces over a traditional brick and mortar site. Whilst some SMEs test the waters with online marketplaces to trial new products, some are using them as their sole selling channel as they provide access to millions of customers. At Masons Self Storage, they have definitely seen the shift towards online sellers over the past few years. Back in 2016, just 13% of their storage facility was being utilised by business customers, by the start of 2018, that had jumped to almost 40%!

Whilst they had always had professionals such as solicitors, accountants and medical practitioners who needed a secure space to store files and archives, over the past 7/8 years, they have seen the online seller grow rapidly. These quickly emerging business customers require a different type of service. Responding to these changes The Masons Group invested over £1,200,000 to create a secure, high-tech, 24/7 access storage facility with a brand new Business Zone, wider corridors and a large ESCORTA lift, along with pallet and forklift trucks, collection and delivery services, as well as, a Business Lounge offering customers the ability to manage their business whilst onsite with complimentary WiFi, work stations and refreshments. Located in the Vale, just 10 minutes from Cardiff Bay and Penarth, their business sellers get to cut out the commute! We spoke to three of Masons Self Storage business customers based here in the Vale to find out how they got started in the online space. 38

Andrew - Haya Ltd

Haya Ltd is owned by Andrew, who is dedicated to providing excellent quality remote control toys and has been with Masons for 10 years. Andrew was drawn to Masons because of the great location as well as the 24/7 access, which is particularly helpful at Christmas! Andrew sells his products wholesale to toy shops as well as directly to his customers through the Haya website and eBay. Whilst online marketplaces are excellent for connecting businesses with consumers across the world, Andrew has found that this can lead to its own set of challenges, such as international distribution and postage.

Similarly, to Andrew, Alicja was drawn to the easy access at Masons Self Storage as well as the use of the fork lift truck for her deliveries. Alicja started her business, b4beds Ltd back in 2011 when she was working as a supply teacher and her sister was pregnant. Her sister was struggling to find the perfect cot at the right price, so Alicja began looking online and found a supplier that was perfect and affordable. Alicja continued to work with this supplier and began to sell through eBay. At the beginning she was selling 15-20 cots a week, now she sells that a day! Similar to Andrew, Alicja discovered challenges with distribution and shipping so restricted her sales to the UK. Taking advantage of the perks of online marketplaces, Alicja has cut down the costs of running her own website by utilising eBay and Amazon, but she says the market is saturated, which creates a price war.

“ The brand new Business Zone creates a unique space for its Business Customers.”

Michelle - Twenty12 Flooring

Wife and husband team, Michelle and Chris, started their business journey, with Twenty12 Flooring, solely online back in 2009, and after two years of having stock delivered to their home, and, seeing their business really taking off, they moved their stock to Masons Self Storage. As the business continued to expand online, the couple found that there were still certain customers who asked to visit a showroom. Responding to this ‘multi-channel’ need, they now also have a purpose built showroom onsite at the Masons Self Storage facility to display their range of flooring options as well as continuing to offer an extensive online service for those customers who prefer it!

If you’ve had an idea for an online business for a while and are ready to jump into the world of selling through online marketplaces, why not see how the team over at Masons Self Storage can help you join the ranks of online millionaire sellers?

Today Michelle and Chris take full advantage of the Masons forklift truck for deliveries, the much wider corridors and the onsite free parking, which is really convenient and useful for their customers who are visiting the Twenty12 Flooring showroom.

If you want veg that’s full of flavour, organic and ethically produced, then Riverford Organic Farmers could be the company for you. Let Liam and Adriana McNally tell you why they chose to…

LIVE LIFE ON THE VEG What made you want to work with Riverford Organic Farmers? We believe in the ethos and core values that are the foundation of everything that happens at Riverford. We were both working in jobs where we were fundamentally unfulfilled and working with Riverford to promote organic farming and ethical business was exactly the change that we were both looking for. Oh, and we love the wonderful taste of the grown-forflavour veg! Why should customers choose you and Riverford over buying “organic” produce from supermarkets? We choose the varieties of veg that we grow for flavour and not cosmetic perfection. We can tell you exactly where it comes from and you can even come and see it growing. Our veg comes straight from the farm to you, not via packers and distribution centres. Because your veg comes in one of our reusable and recyclable boxes we are able to cut down on packaging, using only what is necessary to preserve the quality of the produce while we deliver it to your home for free.

By working with our growers over the long term, we are able to offer them a level of security that they would rarely get from the supermarkets. Looking after farmers, staff, animals, customers and the environment has been at the heart of what we do since day one, and will continue to be. Tell us about the range of products that you offer? We are great believers in sticking to our onions and doing what we do well - growing great-tasting fruit and veg. However, if we are trying to save trips to the supermarket and get the most out of our delivery vans, it makes sense to deliver more per trip. We offer a whole range of fruit and veg to top up your box and you can also get meat (often reared on the same farm where the veg is grown), eggs, milk, cream and yoghurt from the Riverford dairy, organic wine, beer, spirits, cheese, bread, and quite a lot more. All organic, much of it from the Riverford Farm Shop and mostly from local suppliers. Are your products certified organic by the Soil Association? All our vegetables are grown under Soil Association certification, meaning that they are grown to exacting standards and stringently inspected. 40

The letter of organic law means avoiding pesticides and chemicals, but we see organic as going beyond this and being about working with nature rather than against it, ensuring the way we grow and operate is sustainable in every way. What are your most popular products at this time of year? Summer is a wonderful time for our own farm and our UK growers. In July we have superb broad beans, radishes and new potatoes. August welcomes golden corn, for the best corn on the cob, with great broccoli and carrots. September will bring wonderful chard, courgettes, fennel (a personal favourite!) and peppers. Our customers delight in the changing seasons and the variety they bring to our boxes. Eating with the seasons is a joy that we work hard to promote and our wide product range helps to make this achievable. What do you believe are the real health benefits of eating organic produce? Essentially, organic food offers us more of the good stuff, and less of the bad. Organic produce has been shown to have much higher nutritional quality.

The evidence from two recent UK studies show clearly that organic food is high in antioxidants and low in toxic metals and pesticides. GM (genetically modified) is banned and switching to organic food is the best way to avoid exposure to pesticides. In terms of the health of our environment, organic farmers are helping to look after our wildlife by managing and maintaining habitats, which is a vital part of a successful organic farm. On average, plant, insect and bird life is 50% more abundant on organic farms. Organic farms are also home to 30% more species on average.

Is eating organic affordable? The obvious answer when thinking about price, is that organic is more expensive than non-organic. However, what it really comes down to is how our decisions impact on our own health and wellbeing, how they affect the environment, and what kind of relationship we want with the people who grow our food. The truth is that the much of real cost of non-organic farming is hidden, not understood or ignored. Given all the evidence demonstrating the individual, environmental and social benefits, it seems we can’t afford not to support organic farming.

But, most importantly, carrots taste like carrots again! Our food has flavour and, even after delivering hundreds of boxes every week, we’re still excited to come home to our box. What do you love most about what you do? We believe passionately in the values and ethos that we all work hard to promote, and this keeps us going through the early-mornings and the long days. More important than this though, are our customers. Meeting old and new customers whether at the front door when we deliver or at shows, festivals and events really does keep us smiling and we love helping them to Live Life on the Veg!

“We are great believers in sticking to our onions.” What geographical areas do you cover? We are lucky to live and work in the most beautiful part of the UK! We cover the whole of the Western half of South Wales. We deliver right across the Vale, from Peterstone and Barry in the East, to Southerndown and Ogmore in the West and everywhere between. We also cover Swansea and Gower, and all of our beautiful valleys, from the Swansea valley in the West, to Rhondda in the East and everything in between.

What difference has eating organic made to your lives? We’ve always enjoyed good food and cooking but since switching to organic fruit and veg about seven years ago, we have paid increasing attention to our diet and how what we eat affects our daily life, energy levels and wellbeing. As well as these more direct benefits, taking control of your nutrition and eating habits helps to build confidence to improve other aspects of your life. 41

Fancy creating this mouth-watering dish using the fresh, seasonal and always organic produce, delivered free to your home from Riverford Organic Farmers? Here’s how...

SUMMER RECIPE NEW POTATO & CHORIZO HASH WITH ASPARAGUS & EGG

You can either fry or poach your eggs for this recipe. Use the freshest eggs for making poached eggs, so the white seals around the yolks (adding the vinegar helps with this too). INGREDIENTS n 600g new potatoes, scrubbed & cut in half, or in quarters if larger n sunflower or vegetable oil, for frying & roasting n 250g asparagus, trimmed n Splash of sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar n ½ tsp smoked paprika n 1 red onion, finely diced n 2 cooking chorizo sausages (200–250g), skinned & meat crumbled n Handful of finely chopped parsley n Splash of white wine vinegar or cider vinegar, if poaching your eggs n 2 eggs n Salt and black pepper METHOD 1. Heat the oven to 210˚C/Gas 7 or heat a cast-iron griddle pan over a high heat.

2. Put the potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to a boil and cook for 12–15 minutes, until tender. Drain and lightly crush with a potato masher or fork. While the potatoes are cooking, if you want to poach your eggs, put another pan of water on to heat to a bare simmer (no bubbles). 3. Toss the asparagus in 1 tablespoon of oil in a baking dish. Add a splash of sherry or red wine vinegar, the smoked paprika and season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for 8–12 minutes (depending on the thickness), until tender.

6. If poaching your eggs, add a good splash of vinegar to the simmering pan of water. Crack the eggs into individual ramekins or small bowls. Use a spoon to swirl the water so it looks like a whirlpool. Gently drop the eggs into the water, one at a time, and poach for 3 minutes. Alternatively, fry the eggs in a little oil to your liking. Sprinkle the eggs with a little extra salt before serving on the potatoes and asparagus. Find out more about Riverford on pages 40 and 41. www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

4. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and cook slowly for 10 minutes to soften without colouring. If it starts to catch, add a splash of water and reduce the heat. Add the chorizo, increase the heat slightly and fry for 4–5 minutes, to cook the chorizo through. 5. Stir in the potatoes and warm through. Stir in the parsley and season to taste. 42

When a business has great staff, it shows. The atmosphere and general vibe of the place comes across and makes being there enjoyable. We caught up with Claire and Harriet of Blu Hair Design who have each been working there for ten years and tell us, in their own words, why they enjoy their jobs.

BLU H AIR DESIGN JOB ROLE

JOB ROLE

Harriet Warner

Claire Price

When I look back at my 10 years in Blu, I remember walking through the door as a young teenage girl and I have now become a mum to my son Louie (3) also a step mum to my wonderful stepson Harry (11) with my partner of 11 years Nathan to whom I am now married.

Who knows where the time goes? Ten years’ service at Blu Hair Design - wow what an adventure it has been!

There’s a saying, “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” This is very true to me! I work with the best, and most of all, talented bunch of girls I have ever met who inspire me every day. Most of all I have two bosses, Hayley and Alexis, who have guided me to become a successful busy senior designer. I am forever thankful for their support. Last and not least, my clients, old and new, thank you for all your support and loyalty.

I class myself very lucky to have worked in such a young, vibrant salon. Blu is a very busy salon, so my role as Salon Coordinator is very important as I am the main link between the clients and stylists, making sure that the salon runs smoothly as possible. I can’t even guess how many calls I have answered, appointments I have made, guests I have welcomed over the last ten years. A decade is a long time, but I have enjoyed my time at Blu, who I think of as my other family. Blu is such great team to work with under the successful leadership of Alexis and Hayley. Thank you Blu for ten years of warmth, friendship and support. 44

SIMPLY EXCELLENT

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY; WITH PROGRESS FOR ALL

“...the school’s senior leadership team have a strong, clear vision that they share exceptionally well…” ESTYN 2018 The recent Estyn inspection report for Westbourne School stated Excellent in all five key questions (Standards, Well-Being, Teaching & Learning, Care and Leadership), and reminded me in every sentence how high our standards are I did not feel at all bashful. When all your efforts are both recognised and applauded by complete strangers, it is not only official confirmation that you are doing the right things, but an incredibly secure platform on which the entire school community can build and move forward further. The standards of all our pupils, from nursery to the sixth form, have always been outstanding - in literacy, numeracy, GCSEs and IB Diploma. “The standards achieved by pupils at Westbourne School are extremely high and pupils with English as an additional language make particularly good progress.” “In 2017, all pupils in the sixth form passed the IB Diploma. Of these, 80% achieved above the world average of 30 points while 13% achieved more than 40 points.” However, it was particularly pleasing that the school’s long-term planning and implementation was recognised as exemplar. We pride ourselves on ensuring that every pupil’s needs are met and that the entire school community has confidence in the leadership. Although only appointed as Principal in November 2017, the inspectors quickly evidenced how meticulous planning over a number of years had ensured a completely smooth transition between past and present senior roles within the school:

“Estyn will invite the school to prepare case studies on its work in relation to the support provided to pupils with English as an additional language and the approach to succession planning taken by the proprietor to ensure a smooth transition in the change to the school’s senior leadership”

Top of the League Tables three years in a row 1st - 2015 1st - 2016 2nd - 2017 Daily Telegraph - smaller IB schools

We believe that this statement spoke volumes for the direction and decisions the school has made at every level in recent years – and at the same time understand the incredibly high standards we have achieved in attaining Excellent in every category. For me personally, this is an excellent start to my tenure as school Principal, and I want this to be the opportunity for us all at Westbourne to set ourselves even higher targets for the future. Standards in education are getting higher, and I know it will be even harder in five or six years to achieve such a significant accolade; but I believe in everything we have done, are doing … and will do in the future at this excellent school.

Have you ever wanted to become your own boss? According to recent research, we are living in the era of entrepreneurship and there has never been a better time to give that business idea you’ve been thinking about a go.

BUSINESS IS BOOMING IN THE VALE Amazingly, back in 2016, there were 80 new companies being born an hour in the UK! In 2017, there wasn’t any suggestion of this slowing down and LinkedIn, revealed that as jobs are being cut at larger, more established firms across Britain, sole traders and Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) saw a 13.5% increase in 2016-2017! There is plenty of enterprising talent here in the Vale of Glamorgan as the government and local initiatives have encouraged growth and investment in our local and independent companies! We have a widely diverse, rich and thriving business community that makes our local area interesting. Alongside the rise of entrepreneurship, the serviced offices industry has also seen a boom over the past decade as they provide flexible work spaces that are low risk and affordable.

“ Low risk and affordable.”

Serviced offices allow companies to keep on top of their outgoings with one all-inclusive monthly fee, appealing to start up’s and SMEs in particular as they require less upfront capital. With the convenience and flexibility offered by serviced offices, it’s even easier for entrepreneurs to get their foot on the business ladder as well as a simple process for businesses looking to relocate. Serviced offices offer short term, flexible and even rolling month-tomonth contracts that are perfect for new businesses starting out. Plus, if you’re a business looking to branch out in a new location, short term serviced offices can be a perfect way to test your product in a new area. The Business Centre (Cardiff) is home to a thriving business community here in the Vale, with a variety of diverse businesses working in a range of industries from financial services and cybersecurity to the health sector. The Business Centre offer a range of Office Space options and sizes, Virtual Offices and Meeting Rooms to hire. 46

All residents of The Business Centre can take advantage of the free onsite gym, ample free parking as well as 24/7 access to the centre. A number of businesses at The Business Centre have swapped a more traditional leased office space for a Serviced Office space, and chose to make their home at The Business Centre. We spoke to them to find out why.

Andrew - Bright Oak

Andrew Graveson and his team at Bright Oak are helping people across Wales and the UK to tackle what has been identified as ‘problem debt’. Recent research revealed that one in six adults struggle to make ends meet each month. Bright Oak helps them to address the initial crisis and then work towards clearing the debts altogether over a period of time. Andrew started Bright Oak back in 2007, working from his home before taking office space in Cardiff Bay. As they began to expand, they made the decision to move to Penarth in 2014. However, in 2017, their landlord required the office space back, leaving Andrew and his team searching for a new base. It was important for Andrew to avoid the rush hour traffic in and out of Cardiff and, after visiting The Business Centre, they fell in love with the family business atmosphere that tenants enjoy here, as well as the short commute, in fact, it only takes Andrew a mere ten minutes to get to the office from his home in Penarth!

Paul & McNamara - South Wales Recorder

Sharan - Caremark

New to The Business Centre family is Sharan and her team at Caremark Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan, working with vulnerable clients such as the elderly and those who suffer from Dementia. Sharan and her team needed a home for their business that was easily accessible to all of the Vale as well as some flexible, additional space for them to hold training and support events for their staff. With flexible rolling contracts, excellent amenities and an easy commute just ten minutes from Cardiff Bay and Penarth, The Business Centre ticked all of the boxes for the team at Caremark Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan.

“ All residents of The Business Centre can take advantage of the free onsite gym, ample free parking as well as 24/7 access to the centre.”

The South Wales Time Recorder, is in its 40th year of business and imports and sells time management systems through the UK and Europe. They came to The Business Centre earlier this year when their private offices were damaged during the storms, they initially moved to The Business Centre temporarily. However, they loved working there so much that they made the decision to not return to their previous premises. With Masons Self Storage next door, South Wales Time Recorder makes use of having both facilities so close together. As well as enjoying the amenities and atmosphere of The Business Centre, in just the short time they have been there, their turnover has increased as well as the birth of their new company, Charge Locker Ltd which imports and supplies secure mobile phone charging lockers for people who want to charge their mobile phone in places such as cafe’s, bars and restaurants. For them, having the serviced office space makes sense as they don’t have to worry about energy bills, refuse collection or office cleaning! If you’re a small business looking for low risk office space or you’re ready to see what it’s like to become your own boss and test the waters with your big idea, why not see how the team at The Business Centre could help your business?

Who doesn’t love a scented candle? But did you know that many candles contain nasties and, when burnt, can cause toxic fumes, which can lead to illness? Gauci Organic Candles are made from good, old-fashioned, earth grown soybeans and contain no nasties. Let candle maker extraordinaire, Spiro Gauci tell you more about candles and what got him interested in the candle making business.

GAUCI ORGANIC CANDLES What is so special about your candles then Spiro? The wax we use is made from soybeans. It is further enhanced with the finest carefully selected botanical oils, adding to its performance characteristics. All our candles use soy waxes and are guaranteed to contain no petroleum, paraffin or beeswax products and all the soy waxes we use in our candle making are 100% vegetable. Where did your passion for candle making come from? I have always had a passion for fire, flames, candles and scents. I don’t know why, but when I was little I used to visit my nan and gramps (that’s Welsh for grandmother and grandfather by the way) at their bungalow in Newport. As they were quite elderly, they would always complain it was cold so they always had a coal fire burning. I used to sit staring into the flames for what seemed like hours just day-dreaming. Looking back, that’s probably where my fascination came from so, as soon as I was old enough, I left home and got my own place. The first thing I bought for my flat was some scented candles from The Pier in Cardiff and my new flat smelled wonderful. Pretty soon I was experimenting with candle-making. Things were a little tight financially when I first started. I used to recycle the scented paraffin candle wax and pour into Pringle crisp containers with string hanging from the kitchen unit. I’m sure it was partly to save money but also an excuse to buy more Pringles! At this point, I didn’t know anything about the chemical make-up of wax – my eco-friendly thinking was to come later as I looked into it in more detail. I was also inspired after a road trip across America. In San Francisco I discovered a candle shop that blew me away! It was full of candles and smelled fantastic – so many different colours and the scent was overwhelming. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I’ve dreamed of having my own candle making company ever since.

Where did the essential oils addition come from? My experience in America opened my mind to the possibilities of using scents and essential oils in my candles. I’d always been interested in meditation (and Karate – it’s a spiritual thing I suppose) and so this seemed a logical step. I tried meditation myself with different scents and soon got a feel for what worked well. And so began my candle-lit journey. Why is organic so important to you? I wanted to share my passion for candles but, as I had become more environmentally aware, I also wanted to make sure that what I was creating wasn’t harming the planet. So, I researched organic soy wax and essential oils to ensure they were friendly before I went any further. Now I have a small workshop where we make our candles and I couldn’t be happier. My vision is turning into a reality and, although we’re only a small business, we’re growing every day as new customers find us and tell their friends. 51

At Gauci, we really don’t want to be the biggest candle business in the world, just the best. And, if we spread a little love and light along the way, that would be nice too. Who buys your candles? I have a small but growing list of private customers. I also stock my candles in a number of independent gift shops and salons. I’ve recently been in meetings with a couple of garden centres as well and I’m hoping so see my displays there soon. My little empire is growing! The success of any good business is primarily down to its team. This certainly can be said for Holm House. New to the team is Dan Jones who has taken up the helm as General Manager. We chat to Dan about his new role.

HOLM HOUSE

Where do you live? I have just recently moved from Penarth Marina to Cardiff Bay, but I am originally from Ebbw Vale. What is your background? I have worked in hospitality since the age of fifteen. I have quite a varied background from branded hotels and restaurants to two rosette brasseries and cocktail bars. My most recent role was with Pier 64 Wine Bar and Steakhouse in Penarth Marina. What attracted you to the role at Holm House? I have always loved the location and the venue has so much to offer such as the award-winning spa, private dining and the bedrooms are beautifully finished. However, local residents don’t always think of Holm House as a restaurant and bar, so there’s a great opportunity to promote that within the local community.

The food at Holm House has gone from strength to strength over the last year with the appointment of a fantastic Head Chef, Matt Owen, so it’s all about getting guests through the door for the first time and showing them what we have to offer. What role will you play at Holm House? My role here will be varied and very hands on. My main focuses are promoting the restaurant within the local community and leading the team to deliver first class service. There is a great opportunity to use the venue for more corporate events and functions as the size of the hotel is perfect for exclusive use as a corporate retreat, so a lot of my time will be occupied building those relationships and introducing corporate clients to the brand.

“The hotel is extremely popular with exclusive hire events such as weddings and landmark birthdays.” 54

What qualities do you hope to bring? I’m extremely passionate about hospitality and getting the guest journey right. I’m a big believer that it all starts with the team and that my role is to look after, train, motivate, encourage and empower the team to provide the highest levels of service at all times. Holm House are known for their cuisine? Will you be having an influence on the cuisine offering? If so, what are you proposing? I will have an input on the menus, but I think the contemporary fine dining menu on offer is perfect for the venue. The ongoing focus is sourcing more and more of our products locally in line with our going green initiative. Likewise, the hotel’s events are popular. What events are planned for the month ahead? The hotel is extremely popular with exclusive hire events such as weddings and landmark birthdays, but there is a great opportunity to hold ticketed public events in the restaurant or garden, so we are currently putting

together a full events calendar for the next 18 months. So far, we have planned an end of summer party in early September and our biggest Beaujolais Day yet for November. We are also launching outside catering this year, starting with the new Lexus showroom opening in July and then catering for Lord Sugar at a business event in November.

“The ongoing focus is sourcing more and more of our products locally.” What do you think makes Holm House special? It has a charm about it. The renovation and extension of the 1920’s manor house has been very well done to retain so many original features and the view from the garden across the channel is unparalleled. Sitting in the restaurant or garden on a sunny day looking out across the sea to Flatholm and Steepholm, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect spot.

Cornerswell Road is one of Penarth’s little secrets. It’s joined to the east, at the Woodland Place roundabout by Stanwell Road (one of Penarth’s most popular shopping haunts). But, because Stanwell Road’s shops peter out once you’re over the railway bridge, visitors seldom venture beyond. Big mistake - huge.

Penarth based family run used car dealer with no pressure sales!

SR MOTORS

SR Motors has been trading for over six years and is a small, family run used car dealer offering a relaxed, no pressure environment and a oneto-one buying experience. Owned by Ross Stephenson, the company can stock at any time between 15 to 20 of the highest quality hand-picked, pre-owned cars, with great provenance and a 3-month Autoprotect warranty on all vehicles (with the option to upgrade this at a cost). Flexible and competitive finance options are available with dealer partners Motonovo Finance and Close Brothers Motor Finance. Competitive prices are available on part exchange vehicles. SR Motors also buy cars for cash so, if you have a vehicle you no longer need, go and see them! They also offer a very robust and successful car sourcing service to find the perfect car for your specific requirements.

The company has a well-established and loyal customer base in Penarth but, due to the quality of cars, along with competitive prices, with their primary advertiser being Autotrader, they sell cars to customers all over the UK. They have a very interactive website, which allows customers to search through stock, specifying certain parameters as well as being able to apply for finance. Their stock is advertised on Autotrader, Car Gurus and Find and Fund my Car. What makes SR Motors different from other suppliers? A no-pressure, relaxed environment offering more of a consultative service and sound advice rather than a hard sell.

‘‘Couldn’t fault the hard work Ross put into finding a A3 sport line. Great service as new brake pads and tyres have been fitted as were on advisory and a valet. Outstanding service will use him again in the future!’ Jack Fry 58

SEABREEZE HOMES Not many agents can boast that they rank number 1 out of 27 local agents most agreed sales and most viewed properties! Seabreeze can. Established in 1999, Seabreeze Homes reputation (and statistics) speak for themselves. Director, Nigel Reed, tells us more.

How has the newly refurbished office been received by your clients? Very well indeed! They love the new relaxed and comfortable feel of the office. However, as you know, I’m not one to rest on my laurels and have decided to redecorate again. There’s also a revamp of our logo on the way, which is at design stage as we speak. We like to keep things fresh and interesting here at Seabreeze Homes. A great business only works with a great team. Tell us about yours. Well, we are a close knit team with over 40 years experience between us in the industry. The market is continuously changing and we are always looking at ways to improve our standards. We are a local company and we truly focus on our clients needs and requirements rather than a generic approach to Sales and Lettings. Penarth and the Vale itself is a great community to be a part of and we are want to be the best in the area.

What would you say brings clients to Seabreeze Homes? I personally believe it is customer satisfaction and our personal approach to how we deal with matters. As a client of ours, you know who you’ll be dealing with and with the recent office refurbishment, we are having more and more clients coming into the office. Whether you are looking to sell or rent your property, it is a big decision and we are always here to help. We are proud of our 5* Google reviews, just take a look at a few of our testimonials “Seabreeze Homes are a breath of fresh air in the property sector and a joy to deal with. Their rates are competitive, and nothing is too much trouble for their friendly, knowledgeable staff. I can wholeheartedly recommend them!” Rachel Madge “Our house sold with Seabreeze in just two days. We could not be more impressed with Nigel and his team. There was no stress, it was super 59

quick, and we sold at a price we were all happy with. We could not possibly have imagined a smoother transaction. Seabreeze did everything they could for us, going above and beyond what you’d expect from an estate agent. We could not be happier.” Mr and Mrs Miller

“ I know it’s cliché, but we really do care about our clients and go out of our way to give 100% level of customer service.” Seabreeze Homes Sales Lettings Management 17 Glebe Street, Penarth CF64 1ED 029 2070 7064 www.seabreezehomes.co.uk info@seabreezehomes.co.uk Like and follow on Facebook, Twitter and Google+

Have you been trying the same approach, on several occasions and the result remain the same? Are you tired of feeling how you’re feeling and want to make the change? Do you want to identify the cause of your symptoms? Then Angharad Evans, Natural Therapy treatment may be the answer you’ve been looking for.

A NGHAR AD E VANS AIDING YOU BACK TO HEALTH WITH NATURAL THERAPIES

Who are you and what do you do? I am a fully qualified allergy and nutritional therapist for over two years. My goal is to provide personalised allergy and nutritional therapies to aid the body back to health. How do you achieve this? This involves non-invasive assessment and an evaluation of environmental contaminators that may cause/ exacerbate a physical illness. I then provide comprehensive treatment to enable my patients to lead a healthy life, without needing to rely or reduce the need for traditional medication. Where are you based? My surgery is based in the heart of Penarth where I offer treatment in a professional, friendly and private environment. What conditions do you treat? I have experience of treating a variety of physical conditions through noninvasive investigations and pragmatic allergy and nutritional therapies. The list of conditions are included on my ‘Conditions’ webpage, however, this is not a comprehensive list and I welcome any potential patients with concerns to contact me to discuss their condition further.

There is no obligation to make a booking by contacting me, I would encourage any potential patients to discuss their needs with me and we can agree next steps. If I feel my treatment would not be suitable for your condition I can recommend alternatives. What does the treatment entail? The treatment will involve an initial two hour consultation which is held in my private surgery. This consultation will entail a non-invasive physical assessment, a discussion about your symptoms and an evaluation of the personal and household products that you use. This will enable me to accurately diagnose your condition and formulate a treatment plan that is tailored towards your needs and takes into account environmental factors. The medical profession focuses on symptoms, this typically ignores the cause of a condition which can be exacerbated or caused by toxins from our life style and habits. I believe in adopting a holistic approach to healing - by assessing my patients and identifying the toxins which are affecting them. 60

I offer a natural solution to their condition to promote long term health. What are your qualifications? I studied Allergy Therapy at Prestberries Holistic Centre, Ledbury, Gloucestershire where I achieved an Allergy Therapy Diploma (distinction). I also have a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy with Alternative Training in Stroud. Is the treatment suitable for children and babies? Yes, my patients have included babies, toddlers, children and teenagers and I have successfully treated their conditions. Like adults, many physical conditions can be attributed to toxins, especially as minors are more susceptible to the negative effect of these factors. With over 20 years as a classroom teacher, I can engage with children of all ages to diagnose and develop an effective treatment schedule. Please see my review page for testimonials.

“I am committed to providing a personalised, holistic treatment.”

How does the process work? My personalised treatment involves active collaboration between me and my patients. I will provide you with clear and straightforward instructions, but you will need to show commitment and determination. I will support you throughout your treatment, but you need to be dedicated to changing your habits (diet, lifestyle, behaviour) in order to restore your body back to health.

However, this treatment entails patients taking responsibility for their health by making changes to their habits, you cannot simply take a passive approach. For allergy and nutritional therapy to work, patients need to show commitment and determination. My patients need to take on my advice and encouragement and commit to the changes if they are to see positive results.

How do I make an appointment or discuss my needs? If my treatments are of interest to you or if you would like additional information, simply contact me by e-mail evansangharad@icloud.com or call me 07739 210291

Whilst we may live in an era of immediate results, our body does not work like this. My treatment will take time and effort. If you’re prepared to make changes, then this therapy is right for you. If you’re not prepared and want to take a pill and carry on doing what you’re doing, then no this therapy is not for you.

If you’re willing to take action, I am here to coach and guide you through to health.

n Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), bloating & digestive issues n Gall Stones n Arthritis, Gout & Raynauds Syndrome n Thyroid issues n Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) & Fibromyalgia n Endometriosis & Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) n Eczema n Wheat intolerance n Lactose intolerance n Anxiety n Diabetes n Generally unwell

My treatment is a lifestyle change that will restore you back to health, not a quick fix that will not address the cause of your symptoms. Does allergy and nutritional therapy actually work? Put simply, yes it does! There is extensive research that has shown the effectiveness of allergy and nutritional therapies in treating an array of common physical symptoms.

How much will the treatment cost? In order for me to make an accurate diagnosis and create a tailored package of treatment I recommend my patients make 3 initial appointments, with a fortnight between each session in order for my patients to allow my treatment to take effect. Further treatment costs will be discussed on a case by case basis. I am committed to providing a personalised, holistic treatment for my patients to recover in the quickest time possible. I’ve interviewed clients of Future on several occasions and every time, they say that replacing the glass roof of their conservatory has transformed their lives.

FUTURE PROOF

On this occasion, we met retired couple Alan and Linda Fowler of Birchgrove to find out what difference Future has made to their lives. How long have you lived here? Eleven years. We had the conservatory built shortly after moving in. What made you contact Future? The conservatory is lovely but in the winter months it was too cold to use. Also, in the summer it could get a little too warm so when we discovered we could put a roof on we looked for companies that could do it. Future was one of three we contacted. So you received several quotes? Yes, Future weren’t the cheapest and certainly weren’t the most expensive. What made you choose Future? We met Craig and he was, and is, a nice a guy. He was very clear about what needed to be done and certainly impressed us with his knowledge. He explained what needed to be done and it was clear that if Future did the job, it would be done professionally.

“Their attention to detail is very reassuring.” How long did it take? Craig promised the work would be completed in one week and it was actually completed in under a week. Were they professional, clean and tidy? They are an incredible bunch of lads. Nothing was too much trouble. And their attention to detail is very reassuring. What difference has the new roof made? We can now use the conservatory all year round. We’re in here every day. It has transformed the way we use the house – basically we live in it. The new roof will also extend the life of the conservatory and make the house even more useable for future generations. Would you recommend Future to friends and family? Absolutely. We already have. Our neighbour was asking about them and I told him, “You couldn’t find a better crew to do the job!” 67

After first opening in Bridgend in 2012, Sentiments Bridal quickly relocated to Talbot Green, a home it has stayed in ever since. For the last four years this boutique has offered the people of Rhonnda Cynon Taf and beyond the opportunity to find the perfect dress for the big day.

SENTIMENTS BRIDAL

Every single bride that walks into Sentiments Bridal is treated with a full personalised experience where no request is too much; to this family run business, customer service is their utmost priority. Having taken over the business in 2017, Andrea Evans and her husband have worked non-stop to ensure a personalised touch to each and every bride, making sure that their visit to Sentiments Bridal is one they will never forget. When Vale Life spoke to Andrea we found out what brides can expect during their appointments. “When arriving at an appointment with Sentiments Bridal we make sure that every bride is made to feel welcome, with refreshments served throughout their time with us. Each bride receives a personalised consultation to help make sure that her thoughts, styles, and wedding ideas are incorporated to ensure that the dress choices are unique to her and the overall style of the day. Each appointment lasts around 90 minutes with the bride given exclusive use of the boutique for the duration of this and any subsequent appointments.

Throughout the journey we pride ourselves on our commitment to building a relationship with our brides, making sure to contact them throughout the process to keep them fully informed of the progress of their dress.” Excellent service is not all that Sentiments Bridal offer, for a high quality boutique would not be complete without an exquisite range of dresses from some top designers. The collections from Catherine Parry, Sottero & Midgley, White One Saint Patrick, and Allure have all been handpicked to provide a wide range of designs in an ever-changing market. To celebrate all of the wonderful dresses found within Sentiments Bridal, the boutique have launched the ‘Introductions Prize Draw’, open to anyone who attends an appointment during 2018. Every appointment places the bride into a monthly draw for cinema tickets, a quarterly draw for a meal for two, a 6-monthly draw for an overnight stay at their favourite hotel, and an annual draw for a romantic 2 day break in a city of their choice. Sentiments Bridal know how important relationships are during this busy time with date nights often falling at the 71

wayside whilst saving for the big day, this is there way of saying thank you to all who visit and to wish the happy couple all the best in the years to come. 2018 has already been a very busy year for Andrea and her husband, yet there is plenty more to come. In addition to the launch of their Introductions Prize Draw, Sentiments are now offering discount to all NHS staff, will soon give goodie bags to each of their new brides, and are nominated for the Welsh Bridal Retailer of the Year award for the second time. As we were leaving we asked Andrea if she had any tips for brides. “Remember to be yourself and follow your heart. The dress needs to reflect you and your personality, let it help show off the best version of yourself.” Sentiments Bridal 56 Talbot Road Talbot Green Pontyclun CF72 8AF 01443 228080 www.sentimentsbridal.co.uk

Sunglasses are essential to protect our eyes from bright light, but only lenses that are polarised can cut out glare from reflective surfaces. Catherine Coles. Dispensing Optician and Manager at Davies & Jones, Talbot branch Green explains.

S UN SCREEN POLARISED SUNGLASSES AT DAVIES & JONES

We all experience glare in our daily lives, and whether its whilst driving or taking part in an outdoors sport, it can be distracting.

Whether you’re a driver or just someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, Davies and Jones recommends polarised sunglasses.

When light reflects off a flat surface, like water, it tends to travel in a uniform direction creating a concentration of light, or ‘glare’. Polarised lenses contain a filter that blocks these concentrated light rays and reduces glare. This reduction of glare can be particularly useful when driving in the rain, or when the sun is low in the sky, as blinding glare can be extremely dangerous.

Single vision prescription polarised sunglasses are now available in their Sunspec Package from £129.

Reduced glare means better contrast and clarity of vision. This enhanced vision, and the fact that harmful rays are being blocked also results in less eye strain. Polarised lenses have been popular in the fishing community for years but it’s not just those who spend a lot of time around water that can benefit from reduced glare.

At Magenta we understand divorce on a personal level. One day I was happily married with two gorgeous daughters, a lovely house, no financial worries and a bright future. A STORY OF DIVORCE

By Julie Lord, CEO Magenta Financial Planning

At Magenta we understand divorce on a personal level. One day I was happily married with 2 gorgeous daughters, a lovely house, no financial worries and a bright future. The next day my husband of 20 years told me he didn’t want to be with me anymore and my happy, carefree life came crashing down. My story is similar to many of our clients and this puts us in a strong position to understand their emotional distress, and their feelings of loss, grief, frustration, anger, loneliness, sadness and their fear of the future. Divorce is generally a stressful and unsettling event. A major relationship is ending, all sorts of routines are upset, and in the midst of the stress of transition there are legal hoops to jump through before things can be resolved. Add in the volatile emotions that are frequently associated with divorce and you have a difficult situation indeed. As we grieve the loss of the future we once envisaged, it is hard to think that new hopes and dreams will eventually replace your old ones, but thankfully they do. I tried very hard to get my marriage back on track, as it was very important to me and to our family unit. However, it wasn’t to be and I eventually had to recognise this and move forward. 25% of people who divorce are now over 50 – the “Silver Divorce.” I have had the privilege of offering financial guidance to many facing divorce after 50 – here are some survival tips: 1. Prioritise your own long term financial security above all else. Don’t struggle to keep the house (and the debt) - the children will adapt. 2. Sort out the finances as soon as possible. The Magenta Divorce Toolkit can help.

A clear understanding of what you both own BEFORE seeking legal advice will smooth the process. Financial mediation should be sought if you can’t agree - but court should be a last resort. 3. Know what you want. This is your life and your future - be strong and take responsibility for your divorce decisions. 4. Think about your next steps. Most people wish they had! Think of your “bucket list,” hobbies, and prior career, for direction on how to move forward.

We can help you to plan your next steps and help you to come through your divorce a stronger, happier person, ready to enjoy whatever comes next. The Magenta Divorce toolkit can be found here: https://magentafp.com/ divorce/

“ A clear understanding of what you both own BEFORE seeking legal advice will smooth the process.”

5. Divorce is just a business transaction. Try to keep emotions at bay when dealing with the business side of things. 6. Nobody wins in a divorce. Bickering only prolongs stress and ensures a future of bitterness. Compromise is needed. The Future So now it is time to start putting your life back together. I started by recognising that my marriage wasn’t a failure - it just ran its course. Good things did result (my children and my business) and other doors have now opened. 76

They say experience counts in life. It certainly does in the legal profession. We talk to local Solicitor and Mediator, Michael Morgan, as he turns sixty.

EXPERIENCE M ATTERS So does Retirement beckon? No thank you! I genuinely enjoy my work and hope to have a good many years to go. One of my predecessors here, Mr Myer Cohen, was still popping into the office at 92. How have things changed? Technology and communication have seen massive changes. At Gwyn and Gwyn Solicitors in Cowbridge in 1984, our intercom system was the same as had been fitted to the Queen Mary Cruise Liner in 1934. There was then great excitement with the advent of fax machines - a Solicitor in Pontyclun phoned me: “Michael. I have got one of these new fax machines. Can you send me a fax I’ve never seen one.” Now of course we have the never ending daily cascade of emails. What about the clients and the work you do for them? People will always be moving house, getting divorced, getting arrested, dying, fighting over boundaries, making wills and all the daily challenges we deal with.

The problems are the same but some of the solutions are different. For example we have developed mediation services to assist in resolving matrimonial and also civil and commercial disputes. Have things improved for the better? In most cases, yes. There have been many changes in the law and improvements in procedure. We now have immediate online access to the Land Registry, can create Powers of Attorney online in a matter of minutes, and can conduct proceedings in the Criminal Courts by video link. So is technology the answer to everything? Technology may assist us in our daily work but our priority remains personal service to our clients to achieve the best results for them. We meet our clients, understand their problems and concerns and earn their trust. Computers can’t do that.

“ Our priority remains personal service to our clients.” 77

Last time we spoke you told us about your acting. What’s new there? I am at the Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival (www.cardiffopenairtheatrefestival.co.uk) in July as Sergeant Wilson in Dad’s Army. My last appearance there was five years ago as Basil Fawlty. Interestingly both actors started out in life intending to be Solicitors. John Le Mesurieur would probably have been easier to deal with as a Solicitor than John Cleese!

Kaely Backland of Usk welcomed us into her beautiful home and told us why she chose to work with Alexander James Bifold. How did you hear about Alexander James? I wanted some beautiful bifold doors. I researched online and found the Alexander James Bifolds website. I liked the look of it. It looked very professional and gave me the confidence to give the company a call. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? They came across very professional, both on the phone and when their representative, Andrew, initially came out to talk about their products and service before and after installation. What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They installed a set of bi-folding doors with four doors which open on to the garden. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? I already had PVC bi folding doors which were a substandard product and not fit for purpose. After talking with Andrew from Alexander James, and going with his advice to choose their aluminium product, I couldn’t be happier. The doors are not only a better quality product but, aesthetically, they are more pleasing - especially since I could almost choose any colour I wanted and, finally, the big plus - they actually work! Before I hardly bothered opening the PVC doors but now I use them all the time. I was so pleased with the work from this company that I have been back to fit all new windows throughout the property as well!

Creating and enjoying a balanced lifestyle in today’s busy world can be somewhat of a challenge. We are continually informed that eating well, keeping fit and getting a good night’s sleep helps keep us centred and healthy. But not all of us have the time or means to enable us to live this lifestyle we desire. It is well documented that owning a home with space and light enables you to relax and encourages this sense of wellbeing. This is intensified if your home has a room with a view, one where you can take a moment and simply contemplate the day’s journey. However, a balanced lifestyle could mean enjoying the fresh sea breeze on a crisp day, cheering at a rugby match or socialising with friends in the city. So how can we get the best of both worlds?

Whilst only being a short distance away from vibrant restaurants and the artisan community of Penarth or the dynamic city of Cardiff in easy reach. What more could you ask for? Designed by award winning Cardiff based Rio Architects, the spectacular development of apartments, duplex apartments and penthouses are spaced out over two contemporary buildings with impressive floor to ceiling heights and full height double glazing in every apartment, taking full advantage of the sunlight and stunning views. With varying apartment sizes and layouts, there’s a style of home that could create that lifestyle you have been dreaming of.

Flourishing on the water’s edge of Cardiff Marina, there is a unique neighbourhood taking shape. Bayscape, an exclusive collection of contemporary elegant living spaces, offers exceptional views of the city or the water from every home. These spectacular apartments have been designed with a balanced lifestyle in mind, not just because of their location but also because of their thoughtfully designed interior, high end quality finish and amenities. The superior homes include private parking, concierge service and own private balcony or terrace, which provide an exclusive, secluded sanctuary.

EVERY MOMENT M ATTERS Talented photographer and videographer Ben Armstrong is quickly making a name for himself in the industry. Capturing the emotion of events, businesses and people, Ben believes that video is a marketing tool that every business can’t afford to ignore.

Gower Life chatted to Ben to find out more about his passion for the moving image. How long have you been interested in photography and videography? I have been interested in film and photography most of my life. As a youngster, I use to watch a lot of films and wish I could one day make something that people could watch that would either make them laugh or smile. It’s all about the emotion. What do you enjoy most about your work? I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile or refresh their memory from a time in their life. That’s where my passion lies - being able to meet lots of new people on my journey is an added bonus. What do you think makes your work stand out above others? When I’m working with businesses, I aim to put them at ease so the essence of the business shines through. I think when you watch one of my videos there is a certain style or energy to my work.

It means a lot to me to capture a venue or event correctly so that it ends up either being a wonderful memory for someone, or a superb marketing tool. I like to work closely with the customer to capture their hard work in a fun and energetic way. What does a video cost? The budget starts with time taken filming - then I put the clips together. This is called the editing process. From there I add the music that sometimes needs to be licensed depending on what the client wants. Event coverage with music ranges from £395.00 - £1,500 depending on the length of the shoot, music and editing time. What about weddings? Weddings are usually a full day of filming, with lots of footage to go through. Sometimes I’ll have two people filming (one with the girls and one with the boys). Given the nature of this ‘once in a lifetime’ occasion, we tend to spend more time capturing as many precious moments as possible, so this is reflected in the price. 85

length of film. I’ve also been asked to travel abroad to cover weddings which I’m happy to do. What type of clients do you work for? I have been very lucky in my career as a videographer to be asked to work for magazines, holiday companies, charities and corporate events such as The Brogue Trader and Maserati. I recently covered Penarth Fashion Week and really enjoyed working with the RNLI on the project.

“ I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile.” If you would like a video for your business or special event, please get in touch by calling 07766 106701 Please check out Ben’s videos on the GoodLife YouTube channel. Search for ‘Good Life Productions’

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

PORT TALBOT

Cost of Cancer’s most successful charity ball The 4th annual charity ball in aid of Cost of Cancer was held on the 12 May at Blancos in Port Talbot and what a night it was! It was the charity’s most successful ball and raised over £5,000, which will help those who are struggling financially whilst going through treatment for cancer. The night started with a VIP reception and then carried on into the night. The band Omega Blend were on hand again to provide excellent entertainment. There was a balloon raffle and an auction. The night was finished off with a brilliant disco. Nicky Moss the charity’s founder said, “This year has been the hardest to organise but by far the best ball we’ve put on yet”. “ Thank you to everyone who came and to those who donated raffle and auction prizes. Also huge thanks to the volunteers who helped to make the night a success, we couldn’t have done it without you.” For more information on how you can apply for help please go to www.costofcancer.org.uk
