WELCOME Let me start by saying this is a Brexit, Trump and Boris free issue! I think we’ve all had our fill of these subjects. As I’m writing this (in not so sunny June), we’re enjoying a powerful thunderstorm. So much for summer! Let’s hope that the sun decides to show its face soon. We don’t realise how much of an effect the weather makes on independent businesses; nobody wants to venture out when it’s hammering it down. Nonetheless, retailers need your business whatever the weather, so please show them your support. We’ve got another jam-packed issue for you with businesses that we know and love plus a few more new ones for you to discover. Our front cover star, Melanie Byrne of Willow in White, decided to launch a bridal shop because when she was getting married, she couldn’t find a shop that offered her what she wanted in terms of brands and service delivery. For all you brides-to-be, you can read more about Willow in White on pages 8 and 9. We are delighted to be working with the Porthcawl Fashion & Food Festival again this year. It was such a huge success last year, that more and more businesses have decided to get involved. Another great reason to visit Porthcawl. SATURDAY 7TH – SUNDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER, 2019 Last year’s event raised the handsome sum of £12,000, largely due to the participation of local businesses in staging events and raising awareness and donations to this worthwhile cause. This year the festival will run from Saturday 7th to Sunday 15th September 2019 and will consist of a mix of fabulous food and fashion related events in and around the town of Porthcawl. The highlight of the festival is a fantastic Fashion Show and Dinner at The Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl on Friday 13th September. We are hoping that this year’s event will be bigger and better and would like to invite any business in or around Porthcawl to get in touch if they would like to get involved by emailing jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk If you would like to reserve your tickets for the Fashion Show and Dinner, then please email David Shillaw on davidshillaw@google.com

When Melanie Byrne was marrying her fiancé James, she was very excited to go dress shopping with her mum but found the whole experience underwhelming. This gave her the inspiration to open Willow in White in St Brides Major. Melanie tells us more about her exciting new venture.
WILLOW IN WHITE
Congratulations on your new venture, why now? My experience of visiting bridal shops gave me the inspiration to open WiW and to provide ladies with the sort of experience I would have liked for myself. We had our first child, a daughter we named Willow, in October last year. Having time away from my career gave me the opportunity to research and develop this venture. Hence the name Willow in White. Why did you choose to open in St Brides Major? I knew a premises in the city wasn’t for me and there isn’t much in the way of bridal boutiques between Cardiff and Swansea. I’m so lucky to have found such a lovely spot in one of my favourite coastal villages in the Vale. The timing was perfect with Coast Hair & Beauty moving into the Chapel next door, I knew it would make the perfect destination bridal boutique. St Brides
has lots of exciting things happening with the Fox currently being renovated and a lovely new coffee shop opening up just next door. What designers will you be showcasing and why? I’m delighted to be stocking Mori Lee, Maggie Sottero, Enzoani, Rhian Eleri and True Bride. It was really important to me to have designers that I loved, and they had to be the right fit for the boutique. I wore Maggie Sottero for my wedding, so they were the first designer I approached and was lucky
“Every bride deserves to be treated like a queen and that should start from the moment you start your search with us.” 8
enough to have the Rebecca Ingram range. Enzoani are really cutting edge and contemporary, whilst Mori Lee offers something for every brides’ tastes and I feel they complement each other really well. For my flower girl dresses and veils, I have a local designer Rhian Eleri who hand-makes the most beautiful and bespoke pieces. What customers are you hoping to attract? Hopefully engaged ones! All brides to be are more than welcome at WiW. I’m confident we have something to suit every bride’s style. Will you offer plus sizes for the curvier bride-to-be? Absolutely, as well as stocking some beautiful plus size samples, all of our designers’ gowns go from a size 4 to 30. Will you be offering accessories? As well as the hand-made veils from
Rhian Eleri, I have teamed up with two Welsh designers. Ivy and Pearl Bridal, the designer Anna makes the most beautiful head pieces all hand-crafted with such intricate detail. Describe the Willow in White experience? When you book an appointment with me you get full exclusivity of the boutique. The doors are locked, and the fizz will be flowing (or the tea brewing). We’ll sit down and get the full low down on how you imagine your big day to be and exactly how you want to feel. My aim is to provide a fun, pressure-free environment and not the ‘Pretty woman experience’. Every bride deserves to be treated like a queen and that should start from the moment you start your search with us. What do you think will make your offering stand out? Beautiful designs, fabulous location
and a service to rival all others. It’s not about trying to reinvent the wheel it’s about finding the perfect dress in a fun and relaxed way. What is your best piece of advice for brides-to-be when choosing a dress? Don’t get tied into a notion of what you think a bride ought to be. On your wedding day you ought to be you, just a bit more fabulous. If you’d never wear tight clothes, then don’t strap yourself into a bodice with a sweetheart neckline that makes you feel uncomfortable. Tell me about your personal style and what makes you feel like a rock star, then hopefully we can convert that into some serious big day style. Just be you

MY VALE L IFE James Byrne of Marshall Byrne Architecture has been a surveyor for over twenty years, during which time he has worked on lots of great projects locally, in the Caribbean and the Middle East. He lives in Ogmore by Sea with his lovely wife Melanie and their daughter Willow. When was the business established? It came about unintentionally really in 2016, upon my return from working overseas. Several builders and individuals had heard that I was home and called me requesting my residential design services, and my business has developed from there. I am the principal practitioner with back up provided by a close associate of many years and input from other specialist colleagues when needed for structural engineer’s calculations and suchlike. What services do you offer your clients? In the field of residential architecture, each client has a specific need, so firstly I spend a bit of time with them finding out what they are looking to achieve, usually chatting over a cup of tea at their home. Once I have a good understanding of their requirements, I tailor a Services Proposal specifically for them. Some clients need more advice and guidance to get started others know exactly what they want. I currently have one lady client that is so keen that she has done most of the design work herself and I wouldn’t mind employing her! The full remit of services offered includes initial concept design, cost estimates, planning applications, building regulations level detail drawings, contractor procurement, and project management during the build. Typically, a private individual may request a concept to completion package, whereas a builder may only want detailed

drawings and structural calcs. What’s your background? I graduated as a QS in 1996 and was accredited as an RICS Chartered Building Surveyor in 2007. I returned to study at Bath University in 2012 and gained a Master’s degree in the Conservation of Historic Buildings, which is a passion of mine. What type of contracts are you looking for? As a designer of bespoke projects I only take on individual residential developments, be they a new home, extension or conversion. How far will you travel? I am lucky that there are plenty of opportunities in the Vale and the surrounding local authorities so I don’t have to spend too much time in traffic. That said, if the project is interesting, I am prepared to go wherever. Last year I rebuilt a listed toll house in Bath and have even taken on projects in Cornwall. Where do you live? I live in Ogmore By Sea, which is also where I design. The sea views, particularly at first light and sunset, make both a great living and working environment. 10
What do you love about the Vale? It has a spectacular coastline that really encourages you to get out exploring in the fresh air. During these forays, I have discovered an abundance of pretty little villages, which generally have a pub or two serving real ales and good food - which I like more than the walking to be truthful! What do you do to relax? I have a daughter that is eight months old, so as you can imagine there isn’t too much down time lately! What type of food do you like and where do you recommend? That’s a tough one, as I can’t think of any food I don’t like. I frequently combine meetings with a breakfast, and Cobbles is around the corner, so I am spoiled. For Father’s Day, I was taken to Frolics in Southerndown, which has just been taken over by Hugo the new owner who was a great host and the food was a bit special. Greenpoint IT Ltd in Barry was established in 2007. The company provides a wide variety of IT and security services to local people and business across south Wales.
BE SECURE GO GREEN! With the environment high on everyone’s list of concerns these days, Vale Life chatted with Director Kris Price at his shop, and company HQ, on Holton Road in Barry about their services and what Greenpoint is doing to help the environment.
What services do you offer? We offer IT and security services. The business was established in 2007 and back then we offered repairs and spares for laptop and PCs. Since then we have expanded with the industry repairing almost all IT related gadgets. Tell us about the security side… While setting up networks and helping with IT support we were constantly being asked about security systems. With this in mind, we decided to create Greenpoint Security. This has been one of the most exciting decisions I’ve made in business as I’ve always had an interest in security from a young age, I’ve found that a lot of the technology requires lots of principles I’ve learned in IT so the overlap has helped me grow the business quickly. What’s green about Greenpoint? Our security systems are state-of-theart technology. They are all designed to be energy efficient given the tasks they have to do. With new energy and technological developments, I’m sure in the future they could be energy neutral if powered by solar etc. It’s not that far away – maybe in the next decade. On the IT side, our ethos is very much recycle and reuse. We are constantly repairing phones, PCs, laptops etc. We live in very much a throw-away world so if we can fix something economically that has to be a good thing.
“I enjoy making our customers feel more safe and secure in their own home or business.”
Do you recycle? Absolutely, we recycle just like most businesses in Barry. If we can’t reuse or repair a component, PC or laptop, we have a recycling company that collects from us every couple of weeks and they make best use of the materials and components – they are specialists.
And on the IT side, it’s repairing someone’s mobile device or fixing their computer or games console, the moment you reunite someone with their gadget and see how happy they are to have it back makes all the time spent repairing it worthwhile.
What geographical areas do you cover? Right across the Vale, Cardiff and as far east as Newport. Because we’re based in Barry, we find we can be more competitive than Cardiff based companies. What do you love about what you do? Definitely the job satisfaction! With Greenpoint Security, I enjoy making our customers feel more safe and secure in their own home or business. 11

The bride’s wedding dress is always a major focal point of a wedding, and rightly so, but why shouldn’t the groom have a bit of attention as well? Aled Roberts asked himself when choosing his suit for his wedding to Lisa in May 2018. That’s why he went to …
H AWKES How long were you and Lisa together before you got married? We first got together 15 years ago when we were 17 and both in secondary school.
Did you go anywhere else initially? We visited a few places; Slaters, Boss and House of Fraser to name a few, but the offering from Hawkes really stood out in terms of quality and service.
Where did you get married? At Llanerch Vineyard in Hensol, a great hidden gem of a venue, with great hospitality, amazing food and awardwinning wines.
Please describe your suit and accessories supplied by Hawkes? The suit was a blue, slim fit two piece by Remus Uomo, which we combined with a bespoke waistcoat, and an Eton shirt and tie - all from Hawkes. The shirt and suit were fitted at the initial consultation a number of months before the wedding, with further double checks at fittings closer to the date, including a week before the wedding.
Why did you choose to go to Hawkes for your suit? I wanted a suit that was a little bit special, something with a bit of wow factor that made me feel great. The bride’s wedding dress is always a major focal point of a wedding, and rightly so, but why shouldn’t the groom have a bit of attention as well?! From reading reviews online, I felt confident Hawkes would provide this and that they’d give a personal, customer centred service rather than feeling like a number.
“Russell and the rest of the team could not have been more helpful.” 12
When it came to the waistcoat, we went for a completely bespoke design, with every aspect of the waistcoat designed in consultation with Russell. There were a massive range of fabrics to choose from and this ensured we were able to choose exactly the right one for what I wanted. I never realised there were so many options - the cut, neckline, buttons, lapels and pockets to name a few - that we went through in detail to create the perfect item. When it came to the inner lining of the waistcoat, Russell mentioned that he had previously done a suit with a photo lining in, and that if we were able to source a company to provide photos onto suit lining then they were able to have it incorporated into the waistcoat, and also to alter the suit lining in the same fashion. This seemed like a brilliant way to take the outfit to the next level and have something truly unique and personal for the wedding day.
We found a company called Magic Textiles that did a great job of printing photos of myself and Lisa from over the years onto fabric, and Hawkes managed to get it into the lining of the waistcoat and replaced the suit jacket lining with the same print. The lining itself attracted a lot of attention and looked great, and I’m incredibly grateful that Russell suggested it as an option as it really added something special to the outfit. How was the experience working with Russell and Hawkes? From the moment we stepped in the door and through all the numerous visits up until the wedding, Russell, and the rest of the team could not have been more helpful. Friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable, they really made me feel like I was in safe hands. The personalised service, honesty and attention to detail is not something I would have found
anywhere else. Every aspect of design for the waistcoat was discussed clearly and every item was fitted perfectly then meticulously checked for fit when it came in. I genuinely couldn’t fault them, and it was a pleasure dealing with them. Do you shop at Hawkes generally? Prior to this I hadn’t, however since the suit I have shopped there once or twice and plan on continuing to do so. What do you think makes shopping at Hawkes special? The personal service and attention to detail is something I’ve not experienced elsewhere. You buy new clothes to look good in them, and they seem to share the same ambition as you, as opposed to getting you in and out as quickly as possible. They always had time for me and were great to deal with at every stage. 13
The impression is that they truly care about their clients and that is why they clearly have a lot of return custom. Would you recommend Hawkes to others? Certainly. For me, there is nowhere else I would recommend for someone looking for a special item for any occasion. I’m sure I won’t find myself looking for another wedding suit in the future, but I know where I’d go to get it! Mrs Marco’s was established in March this year following an 11 day ‘DIY SOS’ style refit. Now the baby of owner Ruth Zeraschi (with the help of her super supportive husband Marco). Regulars to the café will recall it café was previously owned by Ruth’s brother-in-law, Celestino Zeraschi.
MRS MARCO’S
What was your job before you took over Mrs Marco’s Cafe? My previous career was working in the Voluntary Sector working with young people who were homeless. My last organisation, that I was employed by, was Llamau, a fabulous Welsh charity. I worked for them for twelve years, in a variety of roles. Why the career change? Serendipity. I’ve always loved Porthkerry Park and visited the café when walking my dog. The opportunity arose for me to take the café over and I jumped at it. My previous colleagues reminded me when I left Llamau that I’ve always said this café would be the only reason I’d leave that charity, and here I am! What does Mrs Marco’s offer to its customers? The café has the most wonderful situation in the middle of our beautiful park. The views are stupendous. We’re surrounded by mature woodland and the wildlife that inhabits it. We have an ever-changing view of the coast, which is spectacular in all weathers and we’re
adjacent to the viaduct, which the younger children love when the trains go over. I’m aiming to enhance the natural attractions of Porthkerry by providing a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, where visitors can escape the stresses and strains of everyday life. Where they can enjoy good, simple food in beautiful surroundings whether this Is on their own, or, with the family. What new offerings have you brought in from what was available before? The café itself is very different. I’ve introduced picnic tables, which I feel are more conducive to the park though have kept a few tables and chairs for visitors who would prefer a more formal seating. The interior is a light, modern, functional space, while keeping a warm atmosphere. One customer said it’s a little like coming into their kitchen... which describes my vision perfectly. My aim is to provide something for everyone, so if a family comes to eat, any special dietary requirements are
“I’ve introduced Bio-Degradable containers for take-away coffees, ice-cream and hot food.” 16
catered to. I’ve expanded the menu to include more healthy options, while still providing some old favourites, but, in a more quirky, stylish way. We now stock a large array of cakes too, catering for vegan customers and those with gluten intolerance. Naughty, but nice. Our breakfast menu continues to be popular. As well as the old Builder’s Best Breakfast I’ve introduced a Posh Nosh breakfast and a vegetarian or vegan breakfast. Then there’s the classic bacon sandwich, breakfast baguette and spicy vegan beans on toast, which are served throughout the day. We continue to offer a variety of sandwiches, baguettes and paninis, but have introduced new fillings. I’ve also kept the jacket potatoes on the menu but, now you’ll be able to try my homemade chilli on a cold day. The choice of ice-cream has also expanded as I can’t resist trying the new flavours Subzero are now offering. Lemon meringue, Cookie Dough, Birthday Cake, Jammie Dodger and, for the adults, Blueberry and Clotted Cream. They’re just some of my favourites... a perk of the job. And, there’s Afternoon Tea, which is very popular.
I’ve also installed a Free Little Library, a free book exchange, so customers can bring their old book and swap them for a new read whether it’s while they’re relaxing in the café or at home. Recycling and looking after our environment are extremely important to me, so, I’ve introduced BioDegradable containers for take-away coffees, ice-cream and hot food. We’re also home to Ysgol Gymraeg Gwaun Y Nant’s collection box, where customers can put their used crisp and biscuit wrappers to be terra cycled. My aim is to limit the impact of our café on the environment and continue to look at options to maximise this. What are the most requested dishes? Goodness, that’s difficult. All the breakfasts continue to be popular. Some morning, our little café struggles to keep up with demand to be honest. Then my homemade spicy vegan beans have proved extremely popular with vegans and non-vegans alike. The soup of the day is also a popular choice and customers are keen to try the various options. We’ve become more adventurous in our soups recently and the customers have loved it. Who are your customers? We have a very diverse customer base,
as does the park itself. Our regular morning customers are all dog walkers, who’ve made friends over time and come every morning, rain or shine. Then we have families, friends meeting up, single people who want a bit of peace and quiet and couples who visit after a romantic walk. We also offer special deals to volunteers, schools who visit the park and walking groups. What are your plans for the future? I’m looking forward to building an extension, so, then we’ll have indoor seating, a meeting room, were groups can meet up and a larger kitchen so, we can expand our menu. The extension will have bi-folding doors so visitors can sit inside but still feel part of our beautiful surroundings, with a wood burning stove in the winter. My idea for the meeting room is so we can hold ‘Maker’s Mornings’ where people’s skills are shared, and people can just get together. I’m looking forward to offering salads, including super foods and edible flowers and there’ll also be a quiche of the day and Afternoon Tea. I can’t wait. My daughter, Charly is also keen to then start ‘Pop up’ nights, where her friends and her can showcase their 17
creativity and musical skills. She’d like to arrange a pop-up taster menu with performers acting as waitresses. They’re so talented but, need venues where they can show what they can do. What do you think makes Mrs Marco’s special? Obviously the park and the beautiful environment, but I can’t forget to mention the staff, who are all so supportive and have been involved in the changes at every stage. The café has always been loved, but, now, with extra promotion and adaptations to appeal to a wider audience, it is becoming a ‘Happy Place’ for more and more people. What do you love about Porthkerry? Everything. Every day brings changes. Every season changes the environment. I am so lucky to work here surrounded by nature and sharing my days with others who also appreciate what we have here. Mrs Marco’s Porthkerry Park, Barry Vale Of Glamorgan

When Helen and her fiancé James were looking for a venue for their wedding in April this year, they chose Pencoed House. Here, we chat to Helen about how the couple met and what they love about this stunning venue.
PENCOED HOUSE ESTATE
How did you and James meet? We were both born in Pontypridd, turns out, we lived less than a mile from each other. We also went to the same school but didn’t meet properly until January 2016 following a night out with friends.
would remain etched in our memories for a lifetime. We of course had ideas of things that were important to us; we wanted to be married somewhere that was exclusively ours for the day, we wanted to be able to stay with our guests overnight at the venue etc.
When and where did James propose? On 7th October 2018, James, Bodhi (our son) and I were walking our dog Alfie along the beach at Ogmore-bysea. This is a very special place to us. One small bay means a lot to James and I, it’s where we first sat and talked about our future together. Anyway, James (with Bodhi in his arms) and I were walking along the beach and James asked me to reach into his pocket and get the poo bags out …. Instead I pulled out a ring box and he asked me there and then. Poo bags always bring a smile to my face these days!
It’s hard to put into words but the reason we chose Pencoed House is because of the magical feeling you get as you drive down the long stately driveway. You find yourself surrounded by magnificent woodland and breathtaking grounds and, suddenly, you feel like the outside world has disappeared and you are encased in a beautiful, tranquil haven. There is something innately romantic, almost fairy-tale, about this extraordinary place. We then met Judy and shortly after Jenna, Joanne and the rest of the Pencoed family. If the breath-taking venue wasn’t enough, the team’s warmth and welcoming manor certainly sealed the deal for us, we knew there was nowhere else in the world we wanted to be for our big day.
Why did you decide to choose Pencoed House as your wedding venue? For us the venue was the most important decision when it came to our wedding. We weren’t precious about cars, outfits etc but we knew that where we celebrated our special day
Did you look at other venues? We looked at several wedding venues in the area but as soon as we saw Pencoed House and met the team we knew there was nowhere else for us. Did you work with their planner? We didn’t employ a planner as such but in all honesty the team gave us all the help, support and guidance we needed to ensure the day was everything we dreamed it would be. Did you use their caterers? We did, Cresta caterers were phenomenal! We first experienced the food a few months prior at one of Cresta’s taster events hosted at Pencoed House. It was a lovely opportunity to meet with the catering staff, discuss an array of options for our wedding and sample the exquisite fresh food cooked on site!! When it came to the day, Cresta exceeded all expectations! We already knew that the food would be out of this world, but the service throughout the wedding breakfast and evening buffet was exceptional.
“There is something innately romantic, almost fairy-tale, about this extraordinary place.” 24
“What an amazing experience it was at Pencoed House.” How did the day go? I have no doubt all brides say this, but it quite simply was the best day of our lives (next to our beautiful son being born!). The run up to our wedding was a very stressful time, even days before the wedding we had close family members in hospital, our son had been very ill, even hurricane Hannah decided to rock up the night before the wedding! Everything that could go wrong, did, right up until our special day, but our wedding was perfect from start to finish. This was is no small way down to the team at Pencoed House who ensured that all aspects of the day were executed perfectly, down to every detail (even down to decorating the hall as I had requested). What was the most special part of the day? Tough question! There were so many truly memorable parts to the day but the speeches were very special to us. This part of the day felt a very intimate, personal time where we shared tears and laughter with family and friends.
Did you and your guests stay at Pencoed House? If so, what was that experience like? Yes, we did, and what an amazing experience it was to stay at Pencoed House. Everyone who stayed with us agreed that the five star accommodation is outstanding, and the breakfast was fantastic! Where else can you get Snowdonia cheeses, fresh fruits and warm pastries, freshly squeezed juice, not to mention the delicious cooked breakfast and even chilled bottles of Coca-Cola (for the hangover!) What was working with the team at Pencoed House like? We quite simply could not have planned this wedding without all the help support and guidance the Pencoed team offered us. Six months is an unbelievably short amount of time to plan a wedding (I now realise) when you have a job and a chaotic toddler to manage. The team took all the stress out of wedding plans. Their professionalism and experience was so helpful. They were able to guide us through all aspects of the day and even put us in touch with partner business’ including our photographer (Simon Gough) and the florist that created our table centrepieces (Sara 25
Caroline). Perhaps, more importantly, the team are so approachable and accommodating - nothing ever seemed too much trouble and I always felt I could ask even the most stupid questions! Would you recommend Pencoed House to friends/colleagues? In a heartbeat! And, so would all our guests. Everyone who celebrated with us, made a point of telling us what a truly amazing place Pencoed House is. How fantastic the staff were, and what a perfect place it is to get married. Where did you go on your honeymoon? Nowhere yet. We have booked a cruise on the Norwegian Fjords in August.

Sunglasses are essential to protect our eyes from bright light, but only lenses that are polarised can cut out glare from reflective surfaces. Catherine Coles. Manager at Davies & Jones, Talbot Green explains.
SUN SCREEN POLARISED SUNGLASSES AT
DAVIES AND JONES
We all experience glare in our daily lives, and whether its whilst driving or taking part in an outdoors sport, it can be distracting. When light reflects off a flat surface, like water, it tends to travel in a uniform direction creating a concentration of light, or ‘glare’. Polarised lenses contain a filter that blocks these concentrated light rays and reduces glare. This reduction of
glare can be particularly useful when driving in the rain, or when the sun is low in the sky, as blinding glare can be extremely dangerous.
“Whether you’re a driver or just someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, Davies and Jones recommends polarised sunglasses.” Reduced glare means better contrast and clarity of vision. This enhanced vision, and the fact that harmful rays are being blocked also results in less eye strain. Polarised lenses have been popular in the fishing community for years but it’s not just those who spend a lot of time around water that can benefit from reduced glare. Whether you’re a driver or just someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, Davies and Jones recommends polarised sunglasses. Davies and Jones are proud of their 26
exceptionally stylish range from Maui Jim whose sunglasses won’t change the world – they’ll change the way you see it.
Call in and see the full range for yourselves.

SIAN OWEN PHOTOGRAPHY Hazel and Michael O’Neil were married on 1st September, at Oldwalls, Gower. They planned their wedding in nine months so had to find a great photographer at short notice. Whenever they asked for recommendations, Sian Owen’s name came up. The rest, as they say, is history. What made you decide on Sian Owen Photography? It was through lots of recommendations and, looking through her portfolio of her amazing work on her website, we knew we wanted her to shoot our wedding and, luckily, Sian was available for our date. Why did you choose Oldwalls in the Gower? We didn’t intend on getting married over an hour away from where we live but after viewing various venues in our area nothing seemed to tick all the boxes. We decided to go to Oldwalls on one of their Open Days and we were blown away by their hospitality and attention to detail. Their canapes were delicious, staff were friendly and the
venue itself was clean, modern and built specifically to host weddings with the added bonus of on-site accommodation and glamping hut village. What did you like about Sian’s work? We liked the tone of her images and her eye to capture candid images as well as beautifully creative set-up shots. Her work doesn’t look forced and captures the day exactly how it was. We also saw that Sian does a lot of lovely child photography too and it was important for us that our Page boy nephews, were captured as they are a huge part of our lives.
“We were more than pleased with the photos.” 30
How did the day go? The day was exactly how we imagined it to be and more! It’s hard not to gush or sound soppy when we recall the day as it really was one of the best days of our lives. Everyone looked spectacular, the food tasted delicious and the entertainment (The Brotherhood) had everyone up on their feet dancing all night. We made sure that all our close family had a part to play in the wedding from Hazel’s nan doing a reading to her youngest nephew, Tommy, acting as ring bearer. What was the best part of the day? The best part of the day truly was that everyone we loved and cared about was there and all of those that couldn’t be there were remembered. It was a
celebration of not only our marriage but of two families coming together. If I had to pick a few highlights it would be having a dance-off with my nephew William - he won hands down by bringing out the floss dance! Did you enjoy working with Sian? Absolutely! It was like having a friend at our wedding as well as a photographer; a dress fixer, a coordinator, a councillor and more! Sian made everything seem effortless and relaxing on the day. We had spoken to Sian before the wedding about ideas we had and what/who was important for her to capture. We trusted that she would embrace our vision as well as using her talent to create something better than we could ever imagine. One of our favourite images was when Sian used a smoke bomb around us to create a cloudy, dreamy setting.
“It was like having a friend at our wedding as well as a photographer; a dress fixer, a coordinator, a councillor and more!” Were you pleased with the photographs? We were more than pleased with the photos and we have had so many nice compliments about them. It was emotional when we first looked through the wedding album as it brought the day back to life, and all the
happy memories with it. The photos arrived on a beautifully presented USB stick in a wooden keepsake box which we uploaded to social media to show our friends and family. We didn’t opt for a wedding album although that was an option and we would like to get one in the future. Sian also very kindly edited a few photos a couple of days after the wedding and uploaded them to her social media page for us to see. This was great as it satisfied us until the rest were edited – which, understandably, takes a few weeks as there were hundreds of photos taken. We were overwhelmed with how many photos we received in the end. Do you think Sian was value for money? You can’t put a price on memories to look back on and show future generations. It was so important that we captured the day to relive it again and again because not only do you spend a lot of money on one day which goes in a flash but memories fade. We savoured each second and tried to remember it as best we could but, after a few months, the photos really help piece it all together. It is worth spending the money for a good photographer that understands what you want, and Sian did just that.
“The photos arrived beautifully presented in a keepsake box.” 31
Would you recommend her to others? We would, and have, recommended Sian to others that are looking for wedding photographers. You won’t be disappointed if you hire Sian. You only have to look at her work, or meet with her to see that she is very talented and will take on board your needs and deliver fantastic results beyond expectation.

The success of any restaurant is largely due to its offering and service delivery. That being said, it helps when a business owner doesn’t rest on his or her laurels and invests in making the business even better. Antonio Simone, Chef Patron of The Humble Onion is testament to this.
THE HUMBLE ONION
What changes have you made since we caught up with you last? Since opening in 2017, it’s been a gradual project of creating a great neighbourhood bistro. We have had our humble courtyard paved which is perfect for pre drinks or eating, weather permitting. In addition, we have recently started phase one of our internal renovation, banquet seating and internal décor - phase two to follow shortly with a new bar, tables and chairs ready for Christmas. I also think we have improved our food knowing the boundaries of the kitchen and what our customers want. Our wine list has also expanded presenting a larger offering. Here at The Humble Onion we have a motto of “simple and done well.” We serve honest, humble food using local, seasonal ingredients showcasing the best produce wales has to offer. What’s available and when? We offer two courses for lunch for £18.50. Sunday’s a firm favourite at The Humble Onion, and regularly a busy one, so booking ahead is recommended. We have created a relaxed environment, perfect for families. Our two course Sunday lunch is £20.50.
Do you cater for diners with intolerances? Absolutely. The majority of our food is gluten free and, because we make everything from scratch, we can cater extremely well, but it’s always good to let us know in advance so we can take extra special care. We also offer vegan and have broadened our vegetarian menu. What makes The Humble Onion so special? I wholeheartedly believe we have a unique offering. A combination of our relaxed, social environment, which we pride ourselves on. It’s not fussy at all. But for me it’s just all about good food, wine and enjoying yourselves. Keeping our menus simple with great flavours (and changing monthly) really does bring people back again and again. Our music also gets a lot of great comments, you can thank Dom the maître d for that as a lot goes into the selection, not forgetting his bad jokes! Anything new you’d like to divulge? Within recent months we have been diversifying into weddings as a caterer at some venues. This is an exciting chapter to our story, and we’ve had great feedback. Due to requests, we have also catered at home for private parties. 34
You have a loyal following. Tell us more… Frankly to still be open is commendable in this climate and, without the support of loyal customers, none of this would be possible. So I’d like to sincerely thank them. It’s what keeps me humble.

Let’s just start by saying we love Keyif! And not just because we love Turkish cuisine. We love the authenticity of Keyif. What you get with Keyif is the real thing. Authentic Turkish dishes, served by Turkish people using Turkish recipes and ingredients.
SPECIAL K
KEYIF - ENJOY THE MOMENT! This restaurant shouldn’t just be enjoyed for those special occasions. It has that type of vibe that you could just call in for a drink or a cocktail and catch up with friends, loved ones or business associates it’s a great place to meet. Turkish restaurants aren’t traditionally known for their extensive range of drink offerings but Keyif has a full bar and a mixologist on hand to concoct whichever cocktail takes your fancy. Don’t just take our word for how good this restaurant is. Just read the comments from just a few of its regulars. They’ve been coming here since it opened and each time, they say, is better than the last

It’s been a while since we last caught up with owner of The Beech Tree Bar & Restaurant on Old Port Road near Culverhouse Cross. This restaurant always had a fantastic reputation, and owner Amir Baig has recently made a few changes to make the offering even better. We find out more…
THE BEECH TREE
What changes have you made? Recent customers will have seen that we’ve put in a new floor, giving it a more modern, contemporary feel but we’ve also made a few changes with staff members and the food offering. Hopefully we’re now not perceived as a fish restaurant but a relaxed countryside bar and brasserie. What about the food offering? We’ve altered a fixed price menu to make them more competitively priced; two and three courses for £14.95 and £17.95 respectively available for lunch and dinner. We’ve also tweaked our menu offerings to make them more decorative and visually appealing. After all, we do eat with our eyes! Also we're offering more choice, and a more seasonal menu.
Can we just call in for a drink? Definitely. Many people think because we’re a restaurant, you can’t just call in for a drink and relax. Our bar lounge area has a very relaxing atmosphere and we welcome guests to call in to sample a glass of wine, a beer or choose from our wonderful, new gin menu. Are your guests mainly locals? We have lots of locals, especially with the new housing developments in the area, but we also have guests from all over the Vale, Cardiff and further afield. What if I had an event? No problem. We have a corporate meeting room which can seat fifteen board room style, or forty to fifty theatre style. This room is very popular with our corporate customers, as it has a full projection system. 38
“We are a relaxed countryside bar and brasserie.”
TESTIMONIALS
What customers say... Sheer perfection... I honestly couldn’t fault this restaurant. Large choice of interesting meals; my three courses were prepared to perfection. Cheerful service, attentive, but not intrusive, timings spot-on; smart, clean decor; fair price. Best place in Cardiff? We have been visiting this place for quite a few years. Always leave with a full tummy and a smile. Service is spot on with professional staff, atmosphere is lovely, beautiful building, and the food is very good plus a great wine list. Love this place and will continue to eat here!
“I have never had a bad meal there.”
Always good I have been going to The Beech Tree for many years. I have never had a bad meal there, the service is always good with friendly, helpful staff. The food is generous, always good and the menu choice varied and interesting. Amazing! Came here with family as birthday treat. Never been before but would definitely come again. The staff were very friendly, and nothing was too much trouble for them. The service was first class and so was the food. I was very impressed with the portion size and came away very satisfied. I will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family and cannot wait to come back to try some more of the amazing food on offer. Even my 8-year-old grandson loved his food. 39

Grey’s Hatch Menu offers eight different ways to enjoy this breakfast staple: from Instagram favourite crushed avocado and chilli on rye toast finished with a poached free range hen’s egg, to a three-egg omelette with smoked haddock and Caerphilly cheese and the corned beef hash with HP sauce, watercress and a poached hen’s egg or fried duck egg.
Homemade granola, wholesome porridge, and warm pastries fresh from the kitchen will keep you fuelled until lunch. Lunch and dinner Whether popping in for a business lunch or catching up with friends over dinner, there’s a dish to suit every taste. Keep things casual with the Grey Croque Monsieur wrapped in Carmarthen ham and oozing with Welsh rarebit; or choose the decadent ultimate lobster club sandwich. Other signature must-tries include the sesame seared tuna loin with oriental salad with wasabi and the Cefn Mawr steaks, all cooked and served on a Himalayan pink salt stone. 40
A special treat for tea There’s an array of indulgent afternoon teas at Grey. Dainty finger sandwiches are filled with all the classics including Severn & Wye smoked salmon; Caerphilly cheese; and ham with grain mustard. Move onto iconic Welsh cakes and warm buttermilk scones topped with sticky strawberry jam and Cornish clotted cream, before diving into a selection of miniature cakes, pastries and desserts. Make it a real celebration with a glass of Heidseck Monopole Rośe Champagne or a cocktail. Something to sip Indulge your inner Bond with a bespoke martini or classic G&T crafted by Grey’s expert mixologists.
Using locally-sourced Eccentric Gin, based in the cellars of a building which has stood in Llantrisant for over 200 years, the gin is distilled with natural spring water that runs beneath the floors of the basement giving it a distinctive flavour. Choose from the Geneva with Madame Geneva Rouge, citrus and liquorice; the Cardiff Tea Party with Cardiff Dry Gin, rosemary and lemongrass; and the Oakccentric with Limbeck Gin. Grey’s extensive wine list features a beautiful selection of European, South American and New World sips alongside a selection of local craft beers.
“An array of indulgent afternoon teas.”

Debbie Wildi has been in the beauty business for twelve years. She set up three years ago in a converted room in her home, and is excited to announce that laser lipolysis is available in Llantwit Major.
B LUSH BEAUTY G
ETTING YOU READY FOR SUMMER
Debbie now works alongside Blush Beauty in Llantwit Major offering, amongst other things, Laser Lipo. We chat with Debbie to find out more. How long have you been established? I have been in the beauty business for twelve years. However, three years ago, I went into the laser industry. What are your qualifications? I have level 3 beauty and holistic diplomas, am a radio frequency facialist and am now fully trained as a laser lipolysis and cavitation specialist. What services do you offer? Laser lipolysis inch loss treatments and radio frequency face-lifting facials are my most popular. I also offer holistic treatments such as massage, reflexology, hopi ear candling and reiki.
Where do you offer these services? I am based full time at Blush Beauty Specialists in Llantwit Major. I love being at the salon, having known the owner of the salon Rhiannon for a long time. It’s great to be working together again. Blush also offer a huge range of beauty treatments including nails, spray tanning, waxing and lots more. Blush is located in Llantwit Major town, next door to Goodfellas Gentleman’s Barbers. For bookings or enquiries please call the salon on 01446 677007. Do you offer home visits? No, the machines wouldn’t travel well. However, people are actually travelling from afar to come and have their treatments. I think my furthest regular is from Herefordshire, I also have one from Brecon.
“Blush offers a range of beauty treatments including nails, spray tanning, waxing and more.” 42
Tell us about laser lipo? What does it do? Laser lipo, also known as I Lipo is a non-invasive alternative to the traditional liposuction. Paddles are placed on an area (for example stomach and waist, or thighs), which emit infrared thermal energy that literally melts the fat cells deep beneath the surface of the skin. Once the cells are liquefied, they leave the body via the natural lymphatic system or via urine or sweat. This is why it is so important to drink plenty of fluids following each treatment. A difference of around 0.5 to 1.5 inches may be seen each time, then over the next 72 hours as the body rids itself of the liquefied fat you can sometimes notice even more of a loss. A cavitation wand is then used to massage over the area which helps to break down cellulite and smooth and tighten the skin.
Is it painful and is there any downtime? It is a completely painless treatment. All you will feel is a slight warmth from the pads. Clients say it is quite relaxing. Tranquil music plays in the background whilst you lie and relax for half an hour and let the machine do its work. There is no downtime. This is what makes it a favourite for celebrities. It can literally be a lunchtime treatment and you can carry on as normal afterward. What results can someone hope to achieve? The norm is between 0.5 and 1.5 inch less per area (for example around the waist). However, often it is more than this. I had a lady that lost 2.5 inches from her waist and 2 from her stomach last week with one treatment. Does the fat come back? No, once the fat cells are melted and have left the body they are gone for good. It is a permanent treatment.
Obviously if you put more fat back into the body, more will appear, but with a sensible diet you will not see it return. Are you the only therapist offering this in the area? There are a few in south Wales, however, I believe I am the only one in the area using the AW3 Slimlight machine. This is known in the industry as the “King of Lasers”. It is made by Mitsubishi and has the highest amount of power of any machine on the market. The AW3 also had eight pads, rather than the usual six covering a larger area of the body. What are your most popular treatments this summer? Laser lipo definitely! Clients are wanting to rid themselves of those hard to shift, stubborn areas in time for the sunny weather.
“It is a completely painless treatment.” 43
What do you think makes you special? The fact that I struggle with my weight, just as many other women do, so I can empathise. I exercise and eat sensibly, but sometimes we need a little something extra to help us along.

ACADEMY OF HAIR & BEAUTY In 2005 Ceri Edwards was running a successful hair salon in Porthcawl. Things have moved on at quite a pace and she now owns and runs a very successful Hair and Beauty Academy in Bridgend. Here Ceri takes us through her journey. What made you launch your first academy in Porthcawl? I had thrived on sharing my knowledge and gained great pleasure from watching my apprentices grow. However, the lack of continuity from training agencies was frustrating, and I found myself searching for ways to improve on the delivery for both my staff and others within the industry. At this time premises located next door to the salon in the picturesque seaside town of Porthcawl became available and, without hesitation, I launched myself into building my very own training academy. The cosmetic transformation of the building was the easy part. The following ten years was the real challenge!
Why did you want to set up an academy? The first thing I discovered was the feeling amongst salon owners, like myself, that there was to be a big change in how young stylists gained their qualifications within our industry. Where is the academy now? Fast forward fourteen years and we are based in a much larger premises in Bridgend. The Academy is now a hub of excitement! I have a team of twenty educators, all with a wealth of knowledge in hairdressing, barbering and the beauty industry. We’re delivering qualifications through various different avenues; from schools to private and funded organisations. These are accredited NVQs /VRQs 44
through our chosen awarding bodies. What do you offer your students? During NVQ qualifications, candidates of all ages and abilities are taught the skills needed to reach industry standards. We also offer a wide range of short courses offering an AHB certificate in many advanced training skills within and around our industry. Are your courses available all over Wales? Yes, besides the main academy in Bridgend we now have a number of satellite centres throughout Wales, with our highly qualified educators travelling to provide high standards for candidates unable to travel to our main centre - making our courses accessible
TESTIMONIALS
What people say… “I passed my level 3 here thoroughly enjoyed every minute was gutted to have left! Such lovely staff and awesome stylists.” Nicola Davies “Had an amazing experience with the academy and all those who work there! So grateful for everything Ceri and the team has done for me! I completed my level 2 and 3 here within the academy a few years ago and haven’t looked back since. This academy is the one for me.” Jack Gunter
and open to anyone living in South and West Wales. What’s the future for the industry? The work-based learning department of the academy saw the most dramatic change in 2018 with the hair and beauty sector no longer a priority sector. This will greatly affect the way our future apprentices are supported through their apprenticeship programs. The Academy Of Hair & Beauty is now making this a priority and are working towards building a better learning program to offer our future apprentices who are no longer eligible for a Government funded apprenticeships. With growth within the academy and the development of our new programs,
this means we can look forward to an exciting future. We are thriving to design courses within our team to enable us to offer interesting and inspiring qualifications to candidates wanting to invest in our industry. What do you love about what you do? I feel fortunate to work with incredible people that inspire me to achieve our goals each and every day - with room to grow and great skills being imparted. I attribute part of the great success of the academy to my amazing team, their enthusiasm and skills are a pleasure to watch. My team and I are excited to see what the academy will bring to the industry moving forward. 45

With concern about the climate and sustainability BLU Hair Design of Penarth are encouraging clients and staff to buy into recycling/reusing products and equipment where possible.
BLU GOES GREEN!
Products and equipment… n Shampoos, styling products and conditioners can be purchased in disposable plastic. Purchasing in larger quantities, using refillable bottles not only saves money but also helps protect the environment at the same time. Blu are beginning to implement this way of working. n Encouraging multiple use of gloves (previously one pair of gloves have been used per service rather than washing and reusing).Wash towels only when the load is full… n Washing partial loads can consume a lot more energy and water than if the washer is full. n Blu Hair Design wait until there are enough towels for a full load and are in the process of purchasing more eco-friendly towels. n They will be saving water and energy.
Staff and clients… n Blu provide food recycling tubs for any food waste in the Salon. n Members of staff are using the waste left from the coffee beans from our delicious coffee machine as compost for their gardens. n Blu are encouraging staff and clients alike to bring their own water bottles with them to the Salon. n New to Blu Hair Design, they are in the process of working with a local independent artist to produce a tote bag with the Blu logo, encouraging clients to carry a reusable shopping bag with them for those unexpected purchases. Special offer… Currently on sale at Blue Hair Design, they have a Moroccan Oil Treatment and Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo 46
contained within a reusable water bottle, as shown in the image below, priced at £13.85. Blue to green… Blu Hair Design are actively encouraging recycling where possible and would really appreciate any ideas that their clients would like to put forward.

What does detox mean to you? Going on a crash diet? Avoiding alcohol for a couple of weeks? Cutting down on cigarettes? Being ‘good’ with your diet? Banishing sugar from your diet? Your answers would suggest that a detox means something very different to different people.
SUMMER DETOX Why does detox have to be a thing? Especially if we then go back to our old habits. Can helping our bodies to detox just be a part of our lifestyle? Despite it being an overly used term, regularly detoxing our bodies of toxins is associated with a raft of benefits, including improvement in immunity, general wellbeing and our ability to concentrate. So, with such extensive benefits, it could be time to incorporate a detox into our daily lives, and not just be a fad. Our liver, kidneys, skin, respiratory system and intestines are our detoxifying organs. With this in mind, we should focus on not overloading and stressing them, as this will hinder and not facilitate our body’s ability to detoxify. Take our skin for an example, fancy lotions and potions are often seen as a necessity for healthy glowing skin, but, are all these chemicals good for our skin to absorb? If we actually looked at the chemicals within a moisturiser, we are unlikely to eat them, so why do we expose our skin to these unknown toxins? Healthier, and often cheaper options include skin brushing, Epsom Salt baths and hot and cold showering. Often, it takes trying different approaches and finding the solution which works for you. Moving on from what we put on our body, it’s time to consider what we put inside our body. Many of you may have heard about ‘clean eating’, which basically means eliminating all processed foods from your diet. Such approaches are great as we are avoiding exposing our bodies to preservatives and chemicals from our food, and thus gives
our detoxifying organs a welcome break. A top tip is to look at the ingredients’ list on our foods - if the list is extremely long, it’s likely to include a whole host of chemicals, and should be put back on the shelf. Not only what we eat, but what we drink can aid our body’s ability to detoxify, and water is nature’s liquid gold for our body. If you find water a bit tasteless, try adding fruit/cucumber (we love lime or lemon), to give it a natural flavour. We should aim to drink around 1.2 litres of water a day, if this feels like a challenge, try carrying a water bottle with you, you’ll be surprised on how easy this becomes part of your daily routine. Detox isn’t limited to just what we physically expose our bodies to, it also extends to our physical and social environment. Consider adopting a digital detoxification, with our bodies 47
constantly harassed by messages, social media updates and emails, it’s a good to start with a 15 to 20 minutes period of silence, allowing your mind and body to fully embrace the silence before being bombarded by the digital world. Detox may sound like an archaic approach, bordering on fad, but, by taking detoxifying seriously and taking active steps, your body will reward you with a raft of benefits. Cocco Hair Studio in Pontyclun which has been established for fifteen years, now has a fabulous new home. We chatted to owner Leanne Cocco.
COCCO’S Why the move Leanne? Our client list was growing which meant we needed larger premises. We also wanted a premises off the main street and our own car park to offer our clients a more discreet and accessible service. Our clients absolutely love the new premises! So much so that our client list now demands more staff to accommodate it. How many staff do you employ, and what are their roles? We currently employ seven members of staff. This includes myself, Rebecca Priday, Rebecca Webb, Kylie Hayden, Adele Naden, all senior stylists, Rosie Collenon as junior stylist, and Emma Newman as trainee hairdresser. What products do you use? We are a Schwarzkopf salon. It’s a
reliable brand; on-trend, vegan friendly, paraben and sulphate free, and has a range to suit everyone’s preferences and needs. We love all their products and are happy to use them in our retail area. We also offer Ghd straighteners and the Milkshake plant-based products. What do you think makes Cocco Hair Studio special? I know every salon must say the same, but our clients’ comments speak for us really. They say that we have an open, friendly approach. That they are made to feel comfortable and welcome. We are one big happy family and our clients build close relationships with staff members. It’s a collaborative effort. If a client comes in wanting a change of style, we all get together and 48
get involved. We work as a team. We are all qualified colour technicians. The Ballyage technique is a strong favourite and we all attend regular training with Schwarzkopf to keep our skills on point.

Andrew Nash and Matthew Hobbs are Directors of VOG Fire & Security which was established in April 2014 and based in Barry. The company has recently expanded its operation to cover Cardiff. We caught up with Andrew to find out more.
VOG FIRE & SECURITY Congratulations on your expansion. What services do you provide? We supply, install and maintain CCTV, intruder alarms, fire alarms and access control. Security systems can be expensive. What is your price point? We pride ourselves on being extremely competitive and rarely lose a job over price, coupled with offering a great service we have been able to develop VOG into a recognised brand in just five years. We have always believed security should be affordable – peace of mind is something that everyone should enjoy. What experience do you have? Are you challenged ever? We have over fifty years combined industry experience. Our time over the years installing and maintaining both residential and commercial systems means there’s pretty much nothing that we haven’t seen before. There are always solutions. What geographical areas do you cover? Primarily we stick to South Wales however a few commercial contracts mean we travel further afield. We’re doing a lot more work in Cardiff our reputation seems to be attracting customers from further afield which we’re really proud of. How many installations have you completed? No doubt a competitor will read this article so we will keep this one quiet! Let’s just say it’s more than a thousand and less than a million. What tips can you offer someone thinking about having an alarm or CCTV installed? Do your homework on who you will trust with your home and business security. Many companies start up, mainly one man bands, and offer a “professional” service. To be professional you have to be accredited, customers can find professional companies at www.ssaib.org, VOG will be found here too.
TESTIMONIALS
What VOG Fire & Security customers say… Rachel Evans I recently had an intruder alarm fitting with this company and will recommend them to everyone. Lorraine promptly came to our house and gave us all the details and more of the products. She was able to answer all questions and unlike other companies who also came - she wasn’t in a rush to move to another job. We feel like she gave us enough time to ask any questions.
Kelvin Oatridge Just had our house alarm maintained by VOG. I must say I was hugely impressed with the whole process of continuous dialogue with Andrew in identifying what needed to be replaced on our existing system, and a very reasonable price quoted for the work. The engineer Riccardo was very polite and extremely professional and the system was rapidly upgraded, giving us complete peace of mind.
The company are good communicators and reply fast over email. The engineer who came arrived on time, worked well and left the home clean and tidy. Well worth the money. Ceri George Excellent service fantastic fitters would highly recommend them nothing was too much trouble. Emma Rawlinson Excellent customer service, friendly, helpful, no pressure and easy to contact. Our new house alarm system is fantastic. It’s exactly what we wanted and so easy to use. Fob for ease when arriving at house with children, shopping etc. App to access alarm from anywhere or see where the alarm has been triggered. Very good price too. Thanks VOG, definitely recommend. 55 55

What brands does Walters Shoes carry? We sell a huge selection of footwear and bags - brands include Skechers, Rieker, Lunar, Caprice, Heavenly Feet, Gabor, Fitflop, Barkers - plus others! When was Marcus and Mabel established? February 2019.
Who does Walters Shoes cater for? Our shop has always been about quality men’s and women’s footwear, no matter what your budget. Casual styles are a speciality.
What brands does Marcus and Mabel carry? Clarks, Hotter, Marco Tozzi, Levi’s Kids, Skechers Kids.
What makes Walters Shoes special? Having great staff who are really helpful - in this age of increasing online retail we think people appreciate being able to try on shoes before they buy and getting recommendations for things they might not have tried before. Some of our customers do prefer to buy online however, so we can do that too, and deliver all over the UK.
Who does Marcus and Mabel cater for? We offer fashionable, comfortable shoes for all the family, but our specialism is kids fitted shoes. The bones in kids’ feet are not fully formed until they’re around eighteen, so it’s important to get them fitted to avoid any problems in the future.
“We have an excellent fitting service.” What makes Marcus and Mabel special and different from Walters Shoes? Marcus and Mabel was formerly a Clarks franchise for thirty years. We decided to go independent so we could offer other brands alongside Clarks (which still makes up the majority of our stock). Do you sell online? Yes, our website at launched in June. We also have Facebook and Instagram - follow us for the latest updates!

Watkin Davies, an insurance broker serving individuals and SMEs across South Wales, recently broadened its product offering to include Equipsme, a new kind of health insurance designed for the whole of the workforce.
HEALTHY STAFF
HEALTHY BUSINESS NEW HEALTH PLANS FOR THE WHOLE WORKFORCE With employment in Wales at a record high, there is healthy competition to attract and retain the best talent with measures that go above and beyond salary. A recent survey by HiBob showed that 41% of employees want private health care, a benefit second only to flexible working. Commercial benefits await the businesses that invest in staff health and wellbeing. According to the CBI, health-related absence costs SMEs £782 per person per year. Minor illnesses, such as colds are the biggest cause, totalling 34.5% of the working hours lost to illness in 2017, with a further 17.7% due to musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) issues, such as back problems, and 7.6% resulting from stress, depression or anxiety. Here, Watkin Davies managing director Gina Dixon tells us more about why SMEs, including her own company, are investing in the health and wellbeing of the staff. Gina, what’s different between Equipsme and traditional private health insurance? Equipsme is affordable and practical, focused on helping people to get well sooner and to stay well. It’s a standout benefit for SMEs to show they care about their staff. The plans are simple to understand and help staff from Day One. The entry-level product, at £7 per employee per month, includes an online health check, access to a GP by phone or video 24/7 and up to three physio sessions. Businesses pay the same for all members of staff on the plan, regardless of age, and there are no lengthy medical history questionnaires. Diagnosis and treatment can be added to plans, and staff can also choose to add family members.
Why would somebody buy health insurance when we have the NHS? The NHS offers a terrific service. However, there is always more we can do to help working people to access healthcare services in a more convenient and timely manner. It could be talking to a doctor at the weekend instead of waiting to try to get an appointment on Monday morning. It could be a shorter wait for physio treatment for a bad back. It could be a speedier diagnosis of cancer, which can speed up referral to the NHS for treatment. It all helps and alleviates the worry of waiting for an appointment and not knowing what’s wrong. That sort of practical support is something employees really value from their employers.
60
What about mental health support? There’s been a cultural shift towards encouraging staff to talk about any mental health problems and for employers to support them. In my experience smaller business owners care about this as much as a large employer, but it can be harder for them to access the right support. Equipsme addresses this with a stress support line for £1.50 per employee per month, offering telephone appointments with trained counsellors and up to five face-to-face sessions. It isn’t restricted to work-related problems. It could be anything from depression following a relationship break up through to the stress of money worries. According to the Chartered Institute of Professional Development, 37% of
THE SMART WAY TO A HEALTHY BUSINESS
About Equipsme Equipsme is designed for businesses that want affordable health insurance for their whole workforce. Most of its customers are SMEs from across the country who recognise people as their most important asset, and health and wellbeing as one of the top benefits that people value. The NHS does things extremely well. Especially after patients have received a diagnosis or in an emergency. Where working people are most frustrated by its service is waiting times to see their GP, diagnosis referral and physiotherapy. Equipsme was set up to address this head on. Its health insurance and support plans are designed to provide value to businesses and their staff from the very beginning. The entry level plan, for £7 per person per month (PPPM), includes access to a remote GP service with NHS-registered doctors 24/7, private physiotherapy appointments via AXA PPP’s network, an online health check and access to AXA PPP’s nurse helpline. For £17 PPPM, private diagnosis is added, and for £29 PPPM so is private treatment. The price is the same for all employees aged 16 to 69. There are no long health history questionnaires to complete, just a simple exclusion of pre-existing medical conditions in the last three years. This page images : www.bigstockphoto.com
Customer figures demonstrate that Equipsme meets a real need by providing fast and flexible access to healthcare. For example, nearly one third of employees with Equipsme cover used the remote GP service in the last year. Of those, 84% received a diagnosis or action (such as a referral) in the first appointment. 30% called in the evenings or at weekends. organisations say that they have seen an increase in workforce stress over the last twelve months and we’re certainly seeing a high interest from local businesses for the stress support line. Why did you buy Equipsme for the staff at Watkin Davies? We’re proud to be customers as well as distributors. This was the perfect product to support the wellbeing of our 48 members of staff and we can personally vouch for how well it works, both in terms of how easy it is for employers to implement, and then how easy it is for staff to access the healthcare benefits.
What feedback have you had from other SMEs in South Wales about health plans? It’s quite different to a standard Health insurance product and we’ve had a positive reaction. It’s part of our job as business advisers to understand the needs of our clients and think outside the box a little bit. In addition to their Business insurance we talk to clients all the time about other risks their businesses can face, for example, a piece of equipment or vehicle breaking down, a healthy and happy workforce is just as important to many clients.
“We’re proud to be customers as well as distributors.” 61
That beats waiting for a week to see your GP and is a tangible benefit that businesses of all sizes can use as a recruitment and retention tool. Additional bedrooms can be achieved in the majority of terraced properties. If the existing height in your loft is adequate, then converting your loft becomes a great option. Roof windows can be used to service bedrooms, bathrooms and the new staircase. Planning permission is generally not required for this type of conversion – unless your property is a listed building, within a conservation area or a National Park. Converting the existing space is a very cost effective method of achieving an additional room.
A hipped roof may restrict head clearance and available space in an existing loft. However, the roof can be extended either by a hip to gable or side apex dormer roof extension. Generally this type of extension can be carried out under the property’s permitted development rights and does not require full planning permission. The additional height and space achieved is often used to accommodate the staircase and/or bathroom.
Semi-detached property
Bungalow
Steelwork in conjunction with strengthened roof rafters follows the traditional method of achieving your extra space. Alternatively, the roof can be “retrussed” – this involves replacing the existing trusses with new ones specially designed and manufactured to provide an attic room, particularly useful if the existing property is of timber frame construction. Another advantage of this method of re-trussing your home becomes clear if the existing ridge height is not sufficient and the ridge line needs to be raised.
A rear dormer utilises the lofts available space to its fullest. This allows you to walk into both corners of the conversion at the rear of the property, enjoying maximum ceiling height. This option often proves to be the most cost effective method of achieving more living space – it’s possible to achieve up to 80% of the original property’s footprint. This common form of development on semi-detached properties maximises the available space within the roof scape.

The Royal Mint Experience provides an amazing opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover stories from The Royal Mint’s 1,100 year history.
ROYAL MINT
WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!
If you’ve never visited The Royal Mint, I can confirm you’re missing out on a wonderful insight into this incredible institution, which is steeped in history. I recently took the Gold VIP Tour and can tell you that it’s worth every penny. There were just eight people on our tour which meant there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions. I have to say our two guides, Alison and Beverly, were incredibly knowledgeable and the introductory talk we received from Gwyn was thoroughly enjoyable - learning about the beginnings in the Tower of London and subsequent moves which led the Mint coming to Wales at the instigation of James Callaghan. I was also surprised to hear how much currency The Royal Mint produces for the rest of the world (over 100 countries!) and there are some truly beautiful examples on display. The
Mint also produce medals and proudly created the medals for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. One of the highlights for me was seeing the design process and what goes into producing a coin. I’ve always been interested in design and engineering, so the manufacturing process honestly intrigued me. The die-making, the stamping, the polishing - it was utterly fascinating. Plus the opportunity to spend time on the factory floor was a real treat (not all tours are permitted to do this). We even had the opportunity to strike our very own £2 coin, and hold gold coins worth £50,000 and lift a gold ingot worth £400,000! We had earlier been allowed to visit one of the closed rooms where a huge selection of coins and medals dating back over a thousand years are stored. The history in this room is, quite frankly, astonishing and all our group 66
were delighted to have the opportunity to view something so special. Over a very pleasant buffet lunch I had the opportunity to chat with the other visitors; some were avid collectors, some had been gifted the experience, some were just interested in the history. One chap lived just two miles away and another couple had come from Essex specially. All agreed it was an excellent day and real value for money. If you haven’t visited, it certainly should be on your bucket list. Visit the website for more information or call 0333 241 2223 to book your visit. This year we have seen a 30% increase in the number of divorced women seeking financial planning advice from Magenta. They have decided that life is too precious to spend the rest of it with someone they don’t love anymore. Magenta’s Julie Lord asks…
TIME FOR A DIVORCE?
At Magenta, our aim is to help women build plans for their future security and happiness and show them how to get back in the game when a relationship comes to an end. Divorce is generally stressful and unsettling. A major relationship is ending, routines are upset and, in the midst of the transition, there are legal hoops to jump through before things can be resolved. Add in the volatile emotions that are frequently associated with divorce and you have a difficult situation indeed. The costs of divorce/separation can be very high if the process is not handled well - you need a robust plan for the future before you seek legal help to implement it. We can help to take away the financial sting and much of the stress, if we are consulted early enough in the discussions. Talk to your spouse/partner and agree a way forward. Try to reach a fair agreement about how to split your assets and liabilities. If you can do this without acrimony, you may save thousands of pounds in legal fees.
“Planning with Passion”
If this is not possible, consult Magenta’s splitting up checklist: n If you are concerned about your partner withdrawing money from your joint account, ask your bank to freeze it. n Check your credit rating and ask to be financially disassociated from your ex. n Make a list of your joint and individual assets and liabilities. n If you own property, get it valued. n Contact your mortgage, loan and pension providers for balance statements. n Get specialist pension advice (this is complicated and solicitors are rarely up to speed - we see many women who have agreed to bad pension settlements without understanding the full lifetime implications.) n Make a future budget with revised income and outgoings n Take advice to understand HOW MUCH YOU NEED for the rest of your life – a lifetime cashflow forecast will help. n Amend your Will if necessary. When you are going through the process of divorce/splitting up, it can be very easy to make rushed decisions and jump into a financial agreement that may not be the best for you in the long term. 67
We won’t just help with the finances, we have personal experience of your situation and can help you through the common feelings of anger, grief and fear until you reach acceptance and feel ready to launch yourself at life again. You can trust us to understand. We are offering a free thirty minutes divorce/separation telephone or video call, providing financial planning guidance and a friendly ear if you need support.

BARRY LIBRARY
Exhibition by Kevin Moore - A brief insight into a year in Barry. When we view the photographic archives of Barry, there is an abundant catalogue of photos, mostly of buildings, the old schoolhouse, the rectory etc. but there are very few photos of the people who developed and contributed to our community. It is for this reason that Kevin wanted to document people. He wanted to put names and faces at a particular point in time. Over the period of a year he took thousands of images, such as people battling life threatening illness, a Paralympic who had competed in two Olympic games, winning a gold medal and setting a world record. Prior to Kevin documenting him, only a handful
of people knew of his achievements. People of tremendous courage and resilience, whose stories Kevin believed needed to be told. Kevin has photographed people who sadly are no longer with us, which brings more meaning to the importance of his photographs. When people say a photograph is not important, Kevin’s answer is always the same, “Wait until it's all you have left”. We will all eventually become a memory for someone. For Kevin, as a photographer, there is no better way to preserve and cherish those memories than through the medium of photography. You can find Kevin’s work on Instagram under Kevin Moore Street Photography.

Evolve There’s a new hair salon just opened in the High Street in Barry. Owned by Claire Cash and managed by Steph Henley, this beautifully furnished salon is already creating a well-deserved buzz. Claire and Steph opened the salon this June and chose to open in Barry because of all of the investment currently being spent on Barry and the Waterfront, they felt it was the right time for them to grow with the town. Not only that, they felt was a gap in the market in Barry for a salon with a boutique feel. Claire has worked in the industry for over 10 years, but also has 16 years of business management experience. Steph has worked in the industry for over 8 years and has a strong loyal clientele.
The salon specialises in all aspects of colour, and pride themselves on the client’s experience throughout their visit, from consultation to transformation. Claire and Steph welcomed clients, friends and family to the official launch of the salon recently. From the incredibly positive responses from those who attended, there’s no doubt that appointments were being made there and then! The salon will be launching Evolve beauty in mid July. Mr and Mrs John Francis of St Fagans had a dilemma that many people with conservatories have - too hot in the summer, and too cold in the winter. But a solution wasn’t far away.
FUTURE IDEAL HOMES
After much searching and deliberation they chose to work with Craig and Dina Harewood of Future Ideal in Barry and, by all accounts, are very happy they did. We chatted to them in their beautiful home to find out more.
and big smiles, clearly answering all our questions. They were people we felt we wanted to deal with.
How did you hear about Future Ideal Homes? We found Future after searching for various companies who produced the sort of roof we were looking for.
What work did they carry out for you? We had our glass conservatory roof replaced with a highly insulated solid tiled one.
What made you want to contact them? We liked their website but most importantly, we trawled through their reviews and were pleased to see how many happy customers they had.
Were you pleased with the way they carried out the work? Rather than start what was a pretty major job in the rain, Craig suggested we wait a week or so for it to clear. He kept us fully informed throughout this time with updates and reassurances which we found very helpful. The day the work was to begin dawned and they turned up on time and worked like Trojans to remove the old roof and install the new structure to a point where it was watertight.
Did you contact any other companies? Yes, we contacted four companies in all. We wanted as wide a range of product to choose from as possible. This is a very competitive market and prices all came in at around the same figure. Why did you choose to work with Future? It came down to the right product and the right price, but the deciding factor was meeting the company owners, Craig Harewood and his wife Dina. They both came with very professional attitudes
Who did you liaise with in the company? Craig and Dina and the manufacturer.
As the whole roof had been constructed in the factory and each part numbered for reassembly on site, it all went very smoothly. They cleaned up as they went along and were a joy to have around. Having people you can trust to leave in your home while you are out is a real bonus and both the construction and 76
later the plastering was carried out by really pleasant and efficient men. What difference has the change made to your life? Our ability to use the original conservatory was determined by the weather and we had tried various methods to produce a consistent temperature in order to make it comfortable but without success... in winter it remained freezing and in summer unbearably hot. Now we have a room that is the same temperature as the rest of the house as well as being quieter and generally more homely. It has provided us with a much-needed space in which to dine or simply sit and enjoy the garden. Would you/have you recommend Future to friends/colleagues? We will most certainly recommend them to any of our friends who want to do the same. Well, what can we say but what a huge success the Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival was last year. So much so, that the RNLI and the businesses in the town asked us to get involved again this year, which of course we were delighted to be part of once again. More and more businesses have come on board this year and it certainly promises to be even bigger and better!
PORTHCAWL FASHION & FOOD FESTIVAL 2019
Vale Life would personally like to thank all of the committee members who are working again so tirelessly behind the scenes and to the business owners, old and new, who are taking part so enthusiastically. Once again, we are fortunate indeed to enjoy the support of a cross section of the business community in Porthcawl, from the early days of the project until the event itself. The Gala Dinner and Fashion Show at the Grand Pavilion, which will be the highlight event and, with a great line up of celebrity guests, promises to be a huge success. The purpose of the Festival was to afford local businesses the opportunity to showcase their enterprise whilst at the same time raising funds for Porthcawl RNLI. From the response of all involved and the people of Porthcawl and surrounding areas who so generously supported the events.
“Together we are putting Porthcawl on the map!”
“With the 200th anniversary of the RNLI in sight most of our traditions are well and truly established. All traditions have a beginning and, hopefully, the best ones will never end. They are, after all, the very foundation of the service we provide and the means to do so. Based on the gratifying success of the inaugural Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival in 2018, in collaboration with Vale Life, we are repeating the event in September of this year. We are quietly confident that this year's festival will prove to be even greener shoots than last year of a new RNLI tradition. The Festival is a celebration of our town, Porthcawl, and a chance for local business and commerce to showcase themselves whilst at the same time showing their wholehearted support for their local lifeboat station... currently Wales’ busiest station! Together we are putting Porthcawl on the map! 80
Help us to build a new tradition for the town and the RNLI by supporting us in September.” David Shillaw, Chairman RNLI Porthcawl Fundraising & Events Group “There will be lots going on throughout the week amongst local businesses, including a weekend Food festival which is being held at Pyle Garden Village. Street food vans, artisan produce, specialist ales and celebrity cook- off slots with BBC weatherman Derek Brockway and News correspondent Sian Lloyd will be on offer along with local musical entertainers. One of the week’s highlights will be a Fashion Show and Dinner at the Grand Pavilion with Loulou Boutique and The Closet shops showcasing their collections. Organisers are excited to announce that Welsh Operatic Soprano Rebecca Evans, will be making a special appearance at the Gala dinner in support of the RNLI.” Jayne James, Loulou Boutique @PyleGardenVillage

Set on Porthcawl’s seafront, the Cosy Corner Lounge is the place to meet friends and loved ones for great food, coffee or a G&T. There have been a few changes since we last caught up with owners Sophie and Adam. Here, Sophie tells us more.
COSY CORNER LOUNGE
What do you think sets Cosy Corner apart? The chefs and bartenders are so passionate about creating amazing food and drink. We always ensure we source the best local produce; therefore, we are constantly searching for the best suppliers. The team have even started working with local foraging expert, Sasha Ufnowska, who has been teaching us all about what wild vegetation is available all around us and how it can be incorporated into recipes. This, in turn has led the chefs to create their own fishing club. We feel an understanding of the traceability of the ingredients we use is so important. At Cosy Corner we pride ourselves on using only fresh seasonal produce, as unfortunately in the UK, so many restaurants now use masses of frozen and processed food. In our opinion it does not taste anywhere near as good and also has far less nutritional value. We strive to deliver an extremely high level of service, so all our staff are trained and expected to have a sound understanding of what they are
serving. Our aim is for the customers to feel that they are being fully looked after as soon as they step through the doors. This is an essential part of the dining experience. How have you evolved since opening? When we opened three years ago we set out for it to be a ‘lounge’ where you could eat, have a G&T, a glass of wine, or even just to enjoy a cup of coffee. Yet, somehow the food side of the business seemed to dominate and perhaps we were seen solely as a restaurant by some. Now we feel we have readdressed the balance to where people feel Cosy Corner is for everyone who just want to socialise in a welcoming laid-back setting. I feel we are now in a great place. We have found the style of food we want to serve - it is a small plate concept, with the focus on sharing and enjoying several different flavours in one meal. Then during the weekdays, a much more traditional offering which includes breakfasts, sandwiches and a two-course lunch offering. However, 86
possibly our greatest evolution has been on the drinks. Our gin collection, which started out as fairly modest selection, has now grown to over 75 gins from around the world with 14 different types of tonics to match the specific gin. What does the future hold? We are constantly striving to improve and progress, we love to keep up to date with what is new and happening and then bring it to our little corner of south Wales. We are excited to announce the arrival of a new head chef, Rob Leonhardt, who has worked under a number of Michelin star chefs including Tom Aikens, Tom Kerridge, Dominic Robinson and Wolfgang Puck. After cutting his teeth in some of London’s top restaurants, Rob then moved to Dubai and South East Asia to run leading restaurants and expand his culinary expertise. Now he’s returned to his hometown of Porthcawl to showcase his skills with us and we are super excited to see what he’s going to produce on his new menus. We have launched our Thursday Wine
Club where customers can enjoy a sharing platter and a bottle of wine for £20 whilst also having the opportunity to sample some high-end wines at extremely reasonable prices. Throughout the remainder of the year we will be hosting a number of special evenings, which will include live music and some big-name chef take overs, so please follow us on social media to keep up to date with these events. What makes you special? Without being cheesy, we are like a little family and all get on so well. We’re confident and relaxed and we think our customers can sense that. As our team work so hard for us, we invest in them in terms of educational courses and training to expand their knowledge. We are focused on recruiting young people from the local community and nurturing their passion for food, drink and service. Whilst also ensuring they gain the necessary
skills to be successful in the hospitality industry. We are fortunate to have so many amazing loyal regulars who we love involving in what we are doing and we gain their invaluable feedback. Plus, with the growing amount of people who are now really into their food and drink, those who do come to visit us can see the amount of hard work that we have put into creating our unique dining experience. What event will you be holding for the Porthcawl Food and Fashion FestivaL? We are proud to be part of the RNLI Fashion & Food Festival again this year. They are an incredible charitable organisation which is a special part of this town. On the 14th September 12 3pm we will be offering a two-course fish lunch plus a glass of wine for just £15.95 with £3 of this going to the RNLI. 87

The Dockside, Porthcawl, has very quickly become one of the go-to eateries in the muchloved seaside town since it opened in November 2018.
THE DOCKSIDE Owned and run by husband and wife team Julia (front of house) and Michael Jones, Head Chef. We caught up with Julia to find out more. What does The Dockside offer its customers? The Dockside bar and grill is a trendy new restaurant in Porthcawl, we have only been open seven months, but already have a good name for high quality, freshly prepared, tasty food at affordable prices. We have great deals on throughout the week, a set lunch and early evening menu for £13.95, two courses and £16.95 for three courses. We have amazing wines, a great gin range and cocktails. All our food is freshly prepared, by our amazing kitchen team and everything is homemade, we’ve even started to make our own ice cream! What is the style of cuisine? If I had to label it, I’d say modern European, but we just love cooking fresh, tasty good food, so I guess that is our style. Do you use local suppliers for you meat, fish and veg? Yes, we try to buy as locally as possible; we try to use the local shops, as we are big advocates for shopping and trading locally. Our meat for example comes from a farm in the Vale of Glamorgan and our fish from Cardiff. We also have a great range of Welsh gins from Eccentric Gins in Petersonsuper-Ely, Cardiff and our beer is from Glamorgan brewery. I am always on the look out for new local products. What are your specialties? We specialize in cooking quality steaks and fish perfectly; we have a varied menu with lots of great specialties. We also have a great vegan and vegetarian range and because we cook everything from fresh; we can cook for any type of dietary needs. We are also known for our freshly made desserts and one of our customer’s favorites is our salted caramel cheesecake with homemade honeycomb - it’s delicious.
What are your opening times? We are closed on Monday, Tuesday to Saturday 12pm -3pm and 5:30pm – 11pm. We are open on Sunday for our amazing Sunday roasts 12pm – 4pm. Can you call in for a drink? Yes, you can call in for a drink, we have a lovely lounge area that you can sit and relax and enjoy a specialty gin, a fab cocktail, beer or a coffee. What do you think makes the dockside special? The Dockside is a place you can chill out and relax whilst enjoying fantastic freshly cooked food and amazing drinks. Our staff are amazing, friendly and professional and go above and beyond to ensure every customer leaves happy. We have a great space to relax, with huge windows that fold out so that in the Summer we can give you the al fresco feel, whilst a black and white movie plays in the lounge area for you to sit back and enjoy. It’s a wonderful restaurant, but then I would say that wouldn’t I? So why not come and check us out yourselves so that you can decide. 90
