THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN’S PREMIER LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

VALE L IFE Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Vale Life Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW www.valelifemag.co.uk 0845 130 6452 Passionate about the Vale of Glamorgan We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelifemag.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright Vale Life 2014. All rights reserved. Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to Vale Life. Visit www.valelifemag.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing.

W ELCOME Whilst we don’t see Vale Life as a public information service, telling you where you ought to shop and making you feel guilty when you shop in a national chain (we do it ourselves when we buy things in bulk), we do try to promote and support local businesses for the very best reasons. Shopping locally creates jobs locally, and while you can often buy products at more affordable prices online, by investing your hard earned cash locally, you are helping to retain your local community’s distinctiveness. Local shops can save you money. Don’t be fooled by the enormous advertising budgets of the huge supermarkets. We shop around a lot and I can tell you that I get excellent fruit and veg from my local independent suppliers far cheaper than any supermarket. Yes it’s easy to jump in the car and head off to your out of town shopping precinct, especially on a wet, wintry day, but it has to be better to buy your meat, fish and veg fresh from your local supplier, where they know you by name and you’re greeted with a heart-warming welcome.

We have our favourites but we’d love you to share yours with us on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/valelife and you can tweet to us @ValeLife we’d love to hear from you. We hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year and we’ll see you again in the spring. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@valelife.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

In the pages of this winter issue of Vale Life, you’ll discover many local traders who deserve and value your custom. Remember, small business owners are just like you. Just people trying to make a living.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

We’re very sociable! We’re on the web! www.valelifemag.co.uk Like on Facebook! www.facebook.com/valelife Follow on Twitter! @ValeLife #ValeLife

What do you get the man in your life who appears to have everything? That’s an easy one. Buy them a pair of boots from the iconic Australian brand, R. M. Williams, renowned for their quality and craftsmanship. You won’t need to trawl the streets of Cardiff to find this brand as we’re giving you the heads up by letting you know they’re available from Hawkes in Cardiff ’s beautiful Morgan Arcade.

WALK ABOUT R. M. Williams

They really are made to last and only get better with age. Ok we may not all live in the bush, steer cattle or ride horses, but it is good knowing that if we wanted to do all of these things, we’d have a pair of boots that would be up to the task and, reassuringly, you’ll be joining the many Hawkes customers who have relieved Russell of over 1,500 pairs since he first started selling them. Hawkes holds an excellent selection of R.M. Williams in stock and can order any of the range featured on the R.M. Williams website. Hawkes also stocks the iconic Jeffery West brand. Owner of Hawkes, Russell ScottLawson is naturally a big fan of R.M. Williams boots and is never seen without a pair. What’s so great about these boots we ask Russell?

They’re made with a purpose. For example, the “Original Bushman” boot has a high rounded top to protect against stirrup rub whilst riding a horse, and the Cuban heel prevent the rider’s foot from sliding through the stirrup.

The first ever pair of R.M. Williams boots was made by Reginald Murray (R.M.) Williams back in 1932. The famous elastic side boots are made from one piece of leather, which eliminates the risk of tearing, stitched using waxed thread for durability and featuring elastic at the side for comfort, each pair goes through over 80 hand-held processes at the company’s factory in Adelaide, south Australia.

The Brogue Trader is expanding. In less than a year, the shop in Cardiff’s beautiful Morgan Arcade has grown an enviable reputation for great customer service thanks to the dedication of father and son team Chris and Keiron Macnamara.

BIG SHOES TO With Chris expanding The Brogue Trader’s operations in Bath and Chester, the responsibility for dayto-day running of the Cardiff shop rests firmly on the shoulders of 20 year old Keiron. They might be big shoes to fill but Keiron relishes the challenge. We popped in for a coffee and a catch-up. Why shoes? I didn’t choose shoes, the shoes chose me! What do you love about The Brogue Trader? The days my father isn’t in! Seriously, I like the variety of customers we have in - all types of people;

from local celebrities to just some great characters. Our clients are fantastic, and seem to really enjoy shopping with us and that makes it even better to work here. What skills do you think you bring to the business? I’m half the age of my father so I bring a different dynamic to the business. I have a different perspective on things and that seems to work really well for both of us. I’m very operational and love just being in the shop dealing with clients and helping them with their footwear requirements. 16

What do you enjoy most about your work? It’s not work because I love what I’m doing. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true! Working here is very different from working in regular high street retail - The Brogue Trader is very, very social and clients just drop by for a chat and a catch-up, it really makes the days fly by.

FILL

What shoes are you wearing? I’m wearing the Loake 1880 Buckingham in mahogany - one of our best sellers. They look great with a suit or just jeans as I’m wearing today. Who inspires you? Arnold Schwarzenegger - a simple guy who loved training and became one of the best in the world at his sport and, at the same time, built a career and his property empire and then went on to movies and politics. I’m inspired by his hunger for new challenges and never selling himself short. I believe that to succeed, you have to be determined and mentally as well as physically strong - that’s why keeping fit and healthy is so important to me.

“It’s not work because I love what I’m doing. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true!” What are your future ambitions? Our goal, as a family, is to have more stores. After the incredible success of Cardiff, we have Bath and Chester coming on board in early 2015. There will be a lot of responsibility on me to manage the Cardiff store and keep it on track. However, longer term, I’d like to travel and have a family of my own. Who knows, in ten years we may have ten shops across the UK that would be amazing.

According to owner of Groom for Men in Penarth, Jason Humphrey, male grooming has grown year on year. We chatted to Jason to find out why a growing number of men are paying more attention to their appearance.

GROOM FOR MEN

How long has ww been established? We’ve been open in Penarth for a couple of months. How has it been so far? We’re lucky that we know the formula works as we have an established salon in Crwys Road, Cardiff. Word is spreading mainly through word-ofmouth from satisfied customers. We’re finding that men are popping in to have a look, a quick chat and a coffee, and then, when they like what they see, they pop back to book an appointment.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky with my team they are phenomenal and I am so proud of them. ”

Who works at the salon? I’ve been incredibly lucky with my team - they are phenomenal and I am so proud of them. Victoria manages the salon and is a fantastic stylist and advanced colourist. Milton is our directional barber who also covers hot towel shaving. Myself and Ashley are responsible for the head-to-toe man maintenance treatments. Why Penarth? Penarth holds fond memories for me and my partner as we got married on the seafront and had our wedding photos in the park. Our dream is to live here once we’ve saved a few pennies! There are lots of great independent businesses who are happy to all work together to create a better town. We’re all about integrating within the community. So much so, that we offer a discount for local traders. 26

What do you hope Groom for Men will bring to the area? Having worked in the retail beauty industry, I know more than most how we men have been overlooked. What we bring is head-to-toe man maintenance in a stylish, masculine environment where all men can be made presentable but still feel comfortable and completely at ease. Do you have celebrity clients? We have a confidentiality ethos at both salons. Every customer gets the red carpet treatment.

“We have a confidentiality ethos at both salons. Every customer gets the red carpet treatment.”

You’re not directly on the high street. Was that the plan? Definitely. We prefer that our clients are not overlooked having treatments or being seen entering or leaving the salon. We’re all about discretion. What are the three top treatments on offer this winter? Hot towel shave, directional barbering and waxing. We also offer anti-aging injectables, derma fillers and hair loss solutions, amongst many other treatments.

On the outskirts of Cowbridge, in St Brides Major there is a jewel of a salon called Coast Hair Studio. Its humble beginnings started three years ago in 2011 by Creative Director Stacey Griffiths (formerly Ranson). From an early stage Stacey understood the importance of delivering quality to her clients in everything that she offered and we have had the pleasure of being part of Coast Hair Studios success from day one.

COAST HAIR STUDIO

“It’s been a real journey but it’s one that myself and my team are loving.” Back in 2012 we did a double page spread with Coast Hair studio shared with what used to be the St Brides flower shop next door. It’s a sign of the salon’s organic growth, and Stacey’s ambition, vision, and pursuit of excellence to now be doing a double page spread that includes Coast Hair Studio’s expansion into next door, after Kath Woodman from the flower shop had her second baby and decided to work from home. When we sat down with Stacey on this occasion. One of our first questions was why did you expand? Her answer surprised us a little. She said, “I felt the salon was overcrowded and cluttered, although many of my clients loved the atmosphere, it was important to me to enhance their experience even more.

Elemis Biotec Facials and AH Francis eyelash extensions available in Coast’s gorgeous new beauty room

We have already filled the salon with the best stylists and an absolutely amazing nail specialist. So the next stage for me was to add some Feng Shui and a more diverse set of services. We did this by creating a very natural and flowing feel to the salon while maintaining a busy atmosphere. The salon is now uber spacious with a few quirky creative touches that include the custom made front desk reclaimed from old Penderyn Whisky Barrels.” When businesses expand usually they’re expanding to bring more customers aren’t they? “This wasn’t my primary focus. It was to deliver more quality to my clients and a major part of this was being able to offer the Elemis Biotec Facials along with their product 28

range and we now have a custom built beauty room to facilitate this. Since the beginning I have always ensured that I employ the best, as it’s always been my belief that the people in my business are ultimately what make it special. We have Sara, Ella and Kirsty as wonderfully talented stylists and we have Thuy Lewis as our super talented nail, eyelashes and brow specialist. “Note the word specialist”, she says with a smile. “One of the things I worried about when I thought about offering beauty treatments, was for Coast to be known as a hair salon that started doing nails, and then beauty. That’s why we employed Thuy to do nails, eyebrows and lashes specifically. After all, asking a nail specialist to give a massage would be like asking a hairdresser to do your nails.

WHAT COAST OFFERS Our hair stylists are highly trained in all current hairdressing trends and techniques.

The salon is now uber spacious with a few quirky creative touches.

Along with this we have recently started using Kerastraight smoothing system for unmanageable, frizzy or dry hair. We continually offer a range of hair lengthening and thickening options with Foxy Hair Extensions. Looking at our nail bar, once again offering a wide range of nail services with only the best products for our clients. Shellac is growing in popularity and Gelish is always a winner with our gel polish clients. We have an array or colours to choose from. If you fancy a pattern, print or Swarovski Crystals to jazz those hands up, Thuy’s creative flare really comes out! You can also choose from gel or acrylic nail extensions. However, the newest service we are offering exclusive to our area is IBX nail treatment. This is an in salon experience, we recommend you have every two weeks. The treatment penetrates your nail like nothing else and stays deep within your nail, increasing strength and condition. If you are trying to grow your own nails this is perfect for you. It can also be worn underneath gel polish to protect and strengthen from within.

We have all been to the beautician that doesn’t use the CACI machine properly or just simply recommends the wrong treatments. That is why I’ve avoided the temptation to get a beauty specialist in before Christmas because, quite simply, the right person hasn’t presented themselves yet - we won’t rush it, we will find the best! We’re interviewing at the moment to make sure that the person who joins us shares the same high standards of service and experience as us. We’ll then be able to offer a one-stop-shop for all beauty treatments. We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have been accepted as an Elemis stockist and will be offering the new Elemis Biotech Facial which is a unique high-potency activator using the power of hands-on therapy.

Basically this is the brand new and improved Elemis version of the CACI ultimate!” It’s been a real journey but it’s one that myself and my team are loving. We all thrive on a challenge. But it absolutely wouldn’t be possible without the support of our clients and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for their loyalty.

Semi-permanent eyelashes. We have recently launched AH Francis individual eyelashes. They are totally revolutionary! You will hardly know they are there, a feather weight silk eyelash is individually attached to you own lashes for a super natural glamorous look. You will be in deep relaxation as Thuy is ever so gentle when applying them. She will give you all the aftercare advice you need to keep your lashes looking lovely and no need to wear mascara. With so many carpet businesses and showrooms available, how do you know which one to choose? A good sign is business longevity, growth and word of mouth. Quality Carpets Direct can tick all of these boxes. We chat to both brothers Jamie and Richard to find out what makes Quality Carpets stand out from the crowd.

WALK THIS WAY

We hear that you’re a company that likes to give back, how do you achieve this? We are very heavily involved in local charities both in our Cardiff and Penarth stores. We have been indirectly involved with the Waterloo Gardens fete in support of Holme Towers and the High Street Rejuvenation project. We are keen to support local organisations, charities and events. How important is the Shop Local policy to you? Very. We believe in supporting local suppliers wherever possible. So much so, that achieved our Canmol Marketing Award 2013 for our Partner Store Scheme set up to counter the dominance of the large out of town stores and direct new customers to recommended independent carpet retailers.

How long has Quality Carpets Direct been established? We started the business seven years ago via the internet. We set it up from south Wales, supplying and fitting carpets from London to Aberdeen. When did you open your first store? We opened in Cardiff a year ago and have been delighted with its success. So much so, that we’ve recently opened our second store in Penarth. Why did you choose Penarth? We feel that Penarth is the perfect location for us. Notwithstanding it having over 20,000 people living here, it also has a good number of quality, independent businesses and eateries such as James Sommerin, The Pheasantry, Bar 44 and, if we are to believe what we hear, the national chain, Prezzo. It has everything, an iconic Pier, parks, shops, eateries, great schools; it was the obvious destination choice for us.

“ Top class service, fitting and aftercare and very affordable pricing.”

What brings customers to Quality Carpets Direct? We base our business practice on top class service, fitting and aftercare and very affordable pricing. Since the unfortunately demise of Maskreys, we are finding that customers come to us because they are looking for a company that offers a high level of service but with low internet prices.

How has business been so far? Better than we could have anticipated. We are currently offering a free upgrade to our deluxe underlay range, which is normally £7m2 to all of our Penarth branch customers.

What do you feel you offer which sets you apart? We are a family run, local business with experienced in-house, customer oriented fitters. We offer free underlay on many ranges. Ours is a new forward thinking way of buying carpets. As we possess big buying power, we can offer a vast array of carpets at low prices, even those found on the internet. We also offer free underlay on many carpet styles. How many staff do you employ? We employ ten staff across our two stores. We invest heavily in staff training and customer care and this is reflected in the feedback we receive. 33

It’s been a very busy year for the popular hair and beauty salon, Ustu, Porthcawl. Owners Paul and Wayne have continued to make cosmetic updates to the interior to ensure that the environment in which they and their staff work, and most importantly to them, their customers enjoy is second to none. We chat to them about what they have in store for us.

USTU

What about beauty treatments? Anna, our beauty therapist is already booking clients in for facials, spray tans, waxing, lash and brow perfection treatments, manicures and pedicures and lashes and lash extensions for the party season. Your team is expanding We’re delighted with our team as it stands but we’re always looking for determined, dedicated, creative apprentices to join us. We would encourage candidates to send in a CV with photo as we’ll be looking to interview in the New Year.

We think the salon is gorgeous, why the updates? When you are creative, you can never rest on your laurels, which means that you constantly strive to enhance what you already have, which we believe is an open, light and relaxing environment, which we, our staff and our clients deserve. What changes have you/are you making to the salon? Our clients tell us that they love the interior so we don’t want to change that too much, but little tweaks here and there make a big difference to keeping the salon looking fresh and inviting. We are very excited about our new shop front project. We have been working with a company to create a frontage that will complement the interior. All will be revealed very soon! Your clients are very important to you? Absolutely, we’ve built up a very good clientele over the years who are looking for exceptional cutting, colouring and styling techniques but who can also feel relaxed and comfortable in the knowledge that a high quality services doesn’t mean high prices.

We only use the best quality products on the market which include Joico, Kebelo and Fudge. In fact, we are delighted to have been selected as one of the very few GHD destination salons in the area.

Any final thoughts? Ustu would like to thank all of our existing clients for the support they’ve given us this year and look forward to seeing them (and welcoming new clients) next year. Without them we wouldn’t be the salon that we are.

Tell us more about GHD The new range of Ghd curve® wands and tongs has been designed to give you a good hair day - whatever your hair type. Innovative technology developed by their team of Ghd scientists promise to leave you with healthier-looking curls that stay locked in - all day and all night. We also have the full range of the Limited Edition Rose Gold range which is proving very popular. With Christmas and New Year just around the corner, I expect you’re going to be very busy? Yes, but we all love the buzz that occurs in the salon at this time. Paul spends hours dressing it and it always looks amazing. We would suggest clients book well in advance to ensure they get an appointment as the diary does fill up very quickly. 41

At some point, in their early years, most young lads dream of growing up and having a job that’s glamorous and exciting - like an astronaut, or stuntman, or racing driver. For Jake Rattenbury, the latter became the dream job. We talk to his proud dad, Ken Rattenbury.

DRIVEN

When did you first realise Jake was into fast cars? Jake has always been into cars from a very young age. He always knew every make and model. The racing bug didn’t set in until I started racing when he was about five years old he was always around me when I was racing, helping me out cleaning the car and changing wheels, so I think it all started there. When was he ‘spotted’ and who did the ‘spotting’? He was brought into a Ferrari racing team by his now manager Mike Edmonds at the end of 2012. Mike has helped us get where we are now with Lamborghini - his support for Jake, not just in the driving, but also the media side and the way of a racing driver has been invaluable.

What age was he when he entered his first competition? He was fourteen years old. It was in Pembrey in West Wales - the Ginetta Junior championship. Who does he race for? He races in Europe for Lamborghini Racing Team UK, and in America he drives for Lamborghini. How much time does racing take up in your lives? A massive part. The way we see life and organise our lives is by weekends - by which weekends we have free. But now, with Jake racing all over the world, it’s over a week away at a time which has made things a lot harder for us all. With Jake in university, as well as racing, it’s very hard, but if it wasn’t hard everyone would do it and that would be boring! 42

This must be expensive - how do you cover the costs? Sponsors are hard to come by in this economic climate but we have had some great help from Lamborghini themselves, and a great amount of support from Adaptive Vehicle solutions. Richard has been great and we hope our relationship can carry on for many years to come.

As of last Sunday, Jake became World Champion amateur driver in the Super Trofeo World Championship and is now in the Lamborghini Young Drivers Academy as of January 2015.

Jake agrees “AVS can find the right gear for you!” www.avsvehicles.com

Do you and your wife follow Jake when he races? Yes, we try and go everywhere with him. We have as much enjoyment supporting him as he does racing. It’s not just his life, the whole family gets involved. We all take a lot of time out to support Jake because that’s what we all love to do, and Jake says he doesn’t feel right if we aren’t there with him. How does his racing make you and your wife feel? Extremely proud. Also a massive amount of enjoyment because we love going racing with him. We’ve made some great friends racing and we get to meet some truly amazing people along the way.

We hear of accidents and we know it’s part of the sport but do you ever worry that things can go wrong? It’s a huge worry but it’s safer being in a race car than a normal car. Jake has had a couple of big crashes as everyone who races does and, fortunately, he has walked away from them. It’s always a worry but Jake loves doing it and I guess the risk of getting hurt is a huge part of the enjoyment of motorsport. Jake is a complete adrenalin junkie so he loves it - it’s always been a great concern but one we have come to terms with as a family. Where does Jake see himself in five or ten years? He wants to be a factory supported professional driver which I, and many other people, can see being a real possibility. 43

Having already claimed the Amateur Super Trofeo World Championship in 2014 he is set to have a bright future. He isn’t the finished article yet but he has huge potential and a team of people behind him backing him all the way.

They say personalities make restaurants and this is certainly true. Abdul Kahim, owner of the Bengal Lounge loves cooking and talks passionately about what he believes makes great Indian food.

AWARD WINNING

BENGAL LOUNGE

“Excellent service, second to none. They make you feel special.” Geraldine Walters, Swansea Is there such a thing as an untypically Indian restaurant? Well, if there is, the Bengal Lounge near Pyle, at the Vale of Glamorgan’s western edge, is probably one of the best examples. And, if there’s an untypical Indian restaurant owner, it would be Abdul. “I love cooking!” he says.“I enjoy it. We have great chefs here but I love being in the kitchen - creating, trying new things, playing with spices and herbs - it’s what I do.”

The interior is surprisingly cosy. It’s a large open plan contemporary space – tastefully designed and accented but what really brings the restaurant to life is the lighting. It positively glows, and in a good way. You feel like you’ve walked into another world. “It was important to me that the interior of the restaurant creates the right ambience for our customers. A fitting stage for our cooking, I think we have achieved that,” Abdul says with a big smile.

I ask Abdul what his aspirations are for the Bengal Lounge? “I want us to be a cut above. I want the Bengal Lounge to create truly great food. To reach an exceptional standard of cuisine and service. Customers deserve that. Food is not just about making money,” he says proudly. Abdul, and the restaurant, has already won awards and he tells me that he will be competing again in January. 52

We’re smiling too. Abdul’s passion certainly translates into great food and great service. Our starter of Jamdani Murgh was excellent - succulent skewered chicken delicately flavoured with garlic and star Anise leaves us with big happy grins. For our mains we chose a selection to dip in and out of: Sabji Bahar (v) peppers stuffed with mildly spiced vegetables and cottage cheese. Veggies will love this dish. Zafrani Murgh - chicken breast stuffed with spicy minced lamb and spinach, cooked in a mild creamy sauce. This was one of my favourites, and Tenga Mitha Goshi - lamb simmered in a rich mango and lime sauce, dried mint and fresh coriander. This was really tasty. I could have eaten it all night! We also tried Borisali Murgh - chicken cooked with mango, peach, coconut and almonds in a creamy sauce.

“ Abdul is a charming host. Everything is perfect. We come here regularly.” Gwyneth Poacher

“I love the food, the different colours. The presentation is excellent.” Vee Williams, Kenfig Hill Beautifully subtle flavours and the chicken was so moist it melted in the mouth. Every plate was presented beautifully. The colours, the flavours, the service - faultless. We skipped dessert only because we were full and ordered coffees, all the time contemplating what a great restaurant the Bengal Lounge is. Abdul’s a brilliant and enthusiastic host who is much loved by his regulars who were not shy offering their praise. I have rarely talked to so many people who have such affection for a restaurant.

FANCY SOMETHING DIFFERENT?

Christmas - Bengal Lounge style Abdul says: “We like to do things differently. Christmas lunch for example, with an Indian twist. Turkey and lamb infused with selection of herbs, and a herb gravy to add flavour and extra dimension - we have 30 tables booked already for this year.”

The Bengal Lounge has a lovely atmosphere about it. When you’re there, you feel special, like part of a family, and isn’t that how it should be? The food may be Modern Bengal but the service is old fashion Bengal friendly, authentic and traditional.

Starters range from 2.95 to £4.25 Mains range from £4.95 to £9.95 53

It is not everyday that you get to see a partnership that truly works together and is able to seamlessly coexist in order to give customers the very best that each part has to offer but, at what is collectively known as Shades, the cohabitation of Shades Hair Salon and Be Beautiful at Shades provides just that, giving their customers the very best in both hair and beauty care.

SHADES

What is the history behind the joint venture? Shades has been established for seven and a half years in Laleston, a small village just outside of Bridgend. It was started by Donna Hunt who began with a salon that was small enough for her to run by herself. Then after two years of this the demand on Donna was too high, she took on three extra members of staff and, within another year, completely outgrew the salon. The high volume of loyal clientele allowed Donna to move into her current location, which has a much larger hair salon as well as four attached beauty rooms.

Lisa Hayes was subsequently hired as a beauty therapist and, after two years of loyal service and expert dealings with clients, took over the entire beauty side of Shades, evolving it from an addition to the hair salon into a fully formed business of its own. Shades is continually growing from strength to strength with credit to all of the staff for making it the success it is today. Over the years they have won numerous awards with the Best of Bridgend and became a 5 star salon with the Good Salon Guide.

Can you tell us a little bit about each business? Shades hairdressers is a REDKEN associated salon and stockist in addition to a being a Wella colour specialists. The services range from Cut & Blow dry to Colour, advanced hair cutting to specialised colour formulations and colour techniques, also specialised services such as Balmain hair extensions. Apart from the top range products used, the customer services are second to none. A warm and friendly atmosphere that is carried through all of the staff and clients alike. Loyalty Cards and Hot and Cold drinks are offered to all clients.

“ Shades is continually growing from strength to strength with credit to all of the staff for making it the success it is today. Over the years they have won numerous awards with the Best of Bridgend and became a 5 star salon with the Good Salon Guide. 54

In-depth consultations to understand what clients want and need. All staff are highly trained; from Donna Hunt, who trained with Toni and Guy and has over twenty six years experience in hairdressing, Lisa Wallis, a trained stylist with twenty years of experience and finally Jade Duggan, a stylist with over six years worth of hairdressing experience. Each one of the staff attended training courses being external or in-house keeping up with new colour formulas, techniques and trends. Be Beautiful at Shades prides itself on its most important attribute being its care towards their clients. Lisa Hayes, who has been a beauty therapist for the last 16 years, makes sure that each and every customer is confident in the fact that they are receiving the best treatment and services possible.

With weekly special offers, as well as some monthly ones too, Be Beautiful at Shades uses such products as; Elemis Facial and Body products, OPI varnishes / Gel polish, Mix and LDN Tan in addition to all general beauty treatments. As well as all of this they also offer teeth whitening and will soon be providing enhanced eyebrow treatments by Taylored Brows, body wraps and microdermabrasion. What are the plans for the future for the businesses? The plans for the future are for the two businesses to continue to grow even further than they already have. There is truly no end in sight with hopes of hiring even more staff to accommodate the ever increasing influx of loyal customers that continue to pour in day after day. 55

We all love it when a project comes together but no-one more than Dean and Leanne Edmonds of bespoke orangery company, Vale Orangeries in Barry. We chat to Dean and Leanne as they celebrate the completion of their 50th orangery.

R AISE THE ROOF!

This is no ordinary orangery company and Dean and Leanne are no ordinary couple. If you talk to their customers and read the testimonials, the passion and creativity they bring to each project, along with a desire to give their clients the best outcome possible, you’ll understand why they are getting a reputation as the ‘go to’ company for orangeries in Cardiff and the Vale. When did you complete your first orangery and where was it? It was our Sunnybank Orangery in Sully. It was built in December 2009 on a beautiful detached property with a stunning garden. It featured large bi-folding doors, a glazed lantern and a log burner. It still remains one of our favourite projects.

“ An orangery can be enjoyed all year round. You don’t have the problems many conservatories have of being too cold in winter or too hot in the summer.” What do you feel you each bring to your projects? Dean - Creativity. “Our builds are bespoke and designed with the client in mind. I have an eye for good design and can visualise how the build will function practically.” Leanne - “I love interior design and adding the finishing touches. I often go shopping with clients hunting for the perfect flooring, wall covering or fabric to complete the project.” 56

What do you think customers like about your approach? They like our enthusiasm and the personal touch also. We are passionate about our business and our builds. We are on-site regularly throughout the project, and always available to answer any questions or queries. We try and make the whole process as enjoyable as possible. Extending your home can be stressful at times, but our experience reassures our clients they are in good hands.

What are the benefits of an orangery over a conservatory? An orangery can be enjoyed all year round. You don’t have the problems many conservatories have of being too cold in winter or too hot in the summer. We like to describe them as extensions with glass, you can enjoy the comfort of a traditional extension with the wow factor of a glazed roof lantern. You will shortly complete your 50th orangery, do you think orangeries are here to stay? Most definitely! Orangeries have been around for many years, but now are more of a lifestyle choice and, of course, more affordable. Fusing traditional styles with modern living works, and as long as people continue to extend the orangery’s popularity, they will continue.

“ We are on-site regularly throughout the project, and always available to answer any questions or queries.” 57

If you already own a woodburner or multi-fuel stove, chances are a portly Santa is going to be finding another way into your home this year but, if you’re lucky, he might have stopped at Topstak to stock up on the way. When it comes to gift ideas this great Vale business is no one trick reindeer.

STAK’ED WITH GIFTS

For the passionate cook, or wantto-be chef in your life, Topstak has a superb range of quality gift ideas - appropriately displayed on the café level you’ll find the brilliantly designed Joseph Joseph range along with great displays of kitchen and cookery ware. If you really want to push the boat out, you can splash out on a beautiful Neptune kitchen. Topstak are a Premier showroom and also stock Neptune paint (emulsion and eggshell paint in a great range of colours). Many customers and professional decorators say this is one of the best paints available; and they perfectly complement the Neptune kitchens and furniture.

You can complete your Neptune kitchen with a stunning Esse electric cooking range. Topstak Directors Christian and Lynda Pedersen recently visited River Cottage HQ to see them using their Esse cookers, so have plenty of advice. You’ll also find Neptune furniture around the café, and what a café spacious, light but cosy and cwtchty. The food is cooked fresh (while we browsed, there was soup on the Esse hotplate and scones in the oven). You must try the scones - they’re gorgeous, and the home-made carrot cake is the best I have ever tasted. Good coffee too - always a good sign.

“What you’ll also find at Topstak is something that money simply can’t buy - great service…” 62

On the same level you’ll find a gallery with beautifully selected artwork, ceramics and carvings. The cute little seabirds and boats are hand-carved (and Fair Trade) from Bali. There are stunning prints and originals by Stan Rosenthal, who has lived in South and West Wales, including Cowbridge. Stan’s work has a distinctive, bold, modernist style. Topstak also support and showcase local artists - a notable inclusion is batik artist Marie Therese King who trained in Cowbridge and is now based in Malvern. Her work is quite beautiful. There’s also a cross-over between art and kitchenware with the inclusion of beautiful hand-made plates by Ralph Jandrell. Furniture is also on offer. Christian is particularly passionate about their range of vintage Danish furniture and lighting. Topstak even offers a range of cards so when you’re choosing a gift,

you can make a selection from Janie Wilson, Trumpers World and Printmakers and, if you’re looking for gifts for the outdoors type, they have that covered too. We love the Eva Solo bird feeders. Great for keeping our little feathered friends plump and happy through the winter season.

“All our staff share the same ethos.” So, if you’re looking for quality gift ideas this season, Topstak will certainly have a great selection to choose from. From a coffee to a kitchen, you’re guaranteed to receive one of the warmest welcomes in the Vale.

“You must try the scones - they’re gorgeous, and the home-made carrot cake is the best I have ever tasted.” What you’ll also find at Topstak is something that money simply can’t buy - great service and, they believe, unrivalled product knowledge. Christian, Lynda and their son Adam have, through hard work, built a superb business with quality being the overwhelming driver. “We want customers to be treated as we would wish to be treated,” says Christian.

There’s something especially valuable about shrubs that flower and produce berries in winter’s short and often dreary days. Seeing these delightful and resilient plants taking frost, rain and snow in their stride lifts our spirits. Many of them are fragrant and can be used indoors for Christmas decorations.

GROW YOUR OWN FOR CHRISTMAS

If you haven’t got the plants that you want for this Christmas in the garden then grow it for next Christmas. Not vegetables or apples and pears but trees and shrubs that produce their very own Christmas decorations. The obvious one is holly and, even though it’s probably the best known and most traditional of Christmas shrubs, there’s a host of other stunning plants that produce fantastic vibrant berries. Cotoneaster, Mountain Ash, Pyracantha with its red and yellow berries, Rosehips and the one that gets everyone talking Callicarpa, with its bright purple berries. As well as growing these fabulous plants to provide your own Christmas decorations, when they are covered in frost and snow the garden show gets even more spectacular. Of course if you leave them to provide their own firework display in the garden it’s the wildlife that reaps the benefit. Visiting birds like Redwings and Fieldfares will queue up alongside our resident birds like Blackbird and Thrushes to feast themselves to capacity. Now, we have all heard about “going green”, but why should you? What if you could do your bit for the environment whilst saving and earning money? Sounds good doesn’t it? Believe it or not it is possible – with a biomass boiler.

MASS EFFECT As Wales has the largest off-gas proportion of properties in the UK, we really are paying the price of the ever rising fuel prices. How do we combat this perpetual increase in heating costs? Simple, by installing a biomass boiler, says Iain Davies, Director of JD Energy Services, the south Wales based experts in renewable energy. How does a biomass boiler work? It allows you to generate all of your heating using only renewably sourced biomass pellets and/or woodchip fuel or even wood sourced by your own means. The pellets are cheaper than conventional heating methods, averaging a saving of over 30% when compared to oil heating. With the domestic RHI (Renewable Heat Initiative) launched by the government you will also be earning guaranteed payments from the government for using a renewable heating source over seven years. Earning and saving at the same time has never been so easy or so kind to the environment. Can a biomass boiler be applied to any building – domestic and commercial? Yes. Biomass can be applied to any building requiring heat in the UK – the only difference being the form of RHI that is applied for. Domestic property owners are paid out over seven years at a set rate which is calculated prior to install, whereas commercial property owners are paid over 20 years on a metered amount, being paid for the heat that they generate.

How does the process work? We will be there to guide you through the process every step of the way, from quotation, to installation and commissioning. With over 30 years of experience in heating and renewables, we really are your local experts when it comes to switching over to biomass. We supply and fit BURNiT biomass boilers, and as we are registered UK distributors of the BURNiT boilers, with factory support and training, you know you are in safe hands.

So, you see it as an investment then? Absolutely, and with a better return on investment than any bank’s interest rate, it’s a smart way to invest your money!

All of our systems are bespoke and tailored to your specific needs whether it be a smaller 15kW system up to 1MW. We offer a hybrid system comprising of both biomass and solar thermal to ensure that you are gaining all that you can from renewable sources. Our focus is ensuring that you get the best from us and our products at a competitive price with no compromise on service or quality.

“ Our focus is ensuring that you get the best from us and our products.”

70

So what does this mean for homeowners or businesses? It’s a win-win situation. You can still have the level of heating that you are used to, save money on your heating bills, and earn a tax free income from the government and help towards saving the environment. What’s the next move? Simply give us a call on the numbers below and we can get the ball rolling.

If you’re wondering what’s going on in the former Methodist Church on Porthkerry Road, Barry, then allow us to share with you an exciting conversion project by award winning Brownfield Green. The conversion of the original Sunday school hall and the main church will include 11 highly individual and desirable homes. With names such as The Cloisters, The Vestry and The Chancel, we had to find out more.

ROMILLY QUARTER

Tell us about Brownfield Green. Brownfield Green Ltd. was set up to specifically convert historic buildings in the South West into contemporary homes. We have a very strong designled approach and we also place a lot of value on good environmental design. We’re a family business run by Alex and Kezia Fawcett. Our in-house construction team allows us to maintain complete control of every aspect of the build with flexibility to make design changes as the build progresses. In the past we’ve converted other former churches, a Georgian townhouse, and an Edwardian workshop...it’s a really rewarding process to see disused old buildings transformed imaginatively into really unique homes. Its great when people move in, too, and you see it become someone’s own place. How will the building be divided? We’re creating 11 highly individual houses:

n The Chapel will become 7 luxury townhouses (2-4 bedrooms), each with unique features like double height spaces and some with additional mezzanine levels. “Spacious” and “unique” are over- used words but we really do mean it with these houses. n The School House will become 4 contemporary loft style houses (2-3 bedrooms). All of the houses at Romilly Quarter have private gardens and allocated parking and will be sold with a 10 year structural warranty (like a newly built house). What is your vision for the Romilly Quarter project? Well, Romilly Quarter is off to a great start because it starts with great buildings (they’re both Grade II Listed). The quality of old buildings, especially churches, is brilliant – how many new-build houses have solid stone walls up to a metre thick, solid handbuilt wooden doors and painstakingly 72

detailed stonework? We add to the quality of the original with a really high quality conversion – from traditional stonemasons creating new door and window openings to skilled stained glass specialists repairing the windows. There are so many historic features that you just wouldn’t get in a typical new build house: re-worked original floorboards, sanded and varnished, areas of original parquet flooring recovered from the church aisles, Welsh slate roofs, original timber boarded ceilings to upper floor bedrooms and internal stonework details … we could go on and on! All of the houses differ too – some have refurbished original cast iron radiators, some have re-laid original quarry tiled floor and two houses have these amazing Art Nouveau style original gas lamps, designed specifically for the church and reimagined for today. As well as having character and substance, these homes are designed for how we live now: allocated parking,

Internal photos show typical Brownfield Green interiors

“ All of the houses at Romilly Quarter have private gardens and allocated parking and will be sold with a ten year structural warranty.” generous open-plan living spaces (perfect for entertaining), dedicated laundry areas and downstairs loos all come as standard. There’s another unique feature of this development, as we’ve designed many of the houses to be accessed (through their own private front doors) from a shared pathway between the parking areas, a kind of traditional neighbourly streetscape. It’s your own house, but in a convivial setting that encourages a community spirit. Can you describe the lifestyle experience you’re creating? One of the great things about a newly converted home is that the standards of insulation and energy efficiency are now so high. All of the external walls have been internally insulated to modern standards and we’re installing high performance Worcester Bosch boilers and high performance Velfac Scandinavian windows and new doors (with 12 year warranties). These features all help to create an energy efficient home.

Some of the changes are hard to spot - in the School House the original Victorian wooden windows are being refurbished and the original frames re-glazed with double-glazed panes. Romilly Quarter is also perfectly located: It’s a short walk to Romilly Park, the lovely surrounding countryside, docks and traditional high street, as well as being convenient for commuting by road or rail.

developments at Romilly Quarter, sign up for our monthly newsletter on our website - www.brownfieldgreen.co.uk. Who will be the agents selling the properties? Contact Allen and Harris Estate Agents, 21 High Street, Barry, 01446 747878.

How much will the properties cost? Prices to start at £170,000. When will the showhomes be available to view? We are holding an open day on Saturday 24th January 2015 where three of the homes will be finished, furnished and ready to view. Everyone is welcome! There are likely to be further opportunities to view the homes after the open day but if this is anything like our other projects, many will be snapped up on the day! VMW Kitchens have 50 years combined experience in the kitchen business, so when they came across the German kitchen brand, Ponnighaus, they knew that this was the brand of kitchens they wanted to sell in their showroom.

VMW K ITCHENS

James Viggers, designer said “We loved these kitchens as not only do they offer contemporary and traditional styles with over 300 doors, clients can choose which colour door they would like to suit their home.

Some of the kitchens are truly handless and soft closing. But the real clincher for us was that we could guarantee to our clients that the hinges and drawer boxes came with a lifetime guarantee, which can’t be said for most kitchens on the market today.” “What our clients look for is a complete job which is project managed by us from start to finish, using our team of builders and fitters.

If James has identified that a wall needs to come down to enhance the usability of the kitchen, then that’s what we can offer. We’re also a Neff Master Partner and all of our appliances are hard wearing and long lasting and we also offer a good range of tiles and a range of click flooring. We also have a team of decorators for a complete finish. VMW don’t do the hard sell, they offer the best price from day one. What they do offer is a kitchen with typical Germanic durability which fits into the modern day lifestyle. Since their opening, they have fitted numerous kitchens in homes across south Wales and as far as London. Word is spreading.

If you’re losing sleep over buying a new bed or replacement mattress, perhaps a trip to Cardiff Bed Store might help you sleep a little easier. Independent and family-owned, the large showroom near Penarth Road has a great range to suit all budgets and tastes.

CARDIFF BED STORE Owners Dennis and Chris Maunder say, “We pride ourselves on our customer service, with a professional and friendly approach. Working closely with leading brands, we aim to give our customers the perfect selection of beds and bedroom furniture.”

I asked Dennis why customers come to Cardiff Bed Store. “We have a large showroom and our displays are a mix of contemporary and traditional designs. The space allows us to have a vast selections of bed frames, divans and mattresses to choose from to suit every preference - singles, doubles, queens or king size, we’re confident we’ll have what customers need.” The showroom is certainly impressive. We particularly like the range of Highgrove mattresses and the good selection of orthopaedic mattresses. Dennis adds, “We do have a great range. I’m confident we’ll have something for even the most discerning buyers.” 74

Cardiff Bed Store can arrange delivery and has plenty of free parking in front of the showroom so no need to lose sleep over parking fees.

enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.

Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Our Creative Director has over 30 years of experience working at some of the world’s best design and advertising agencies. We know what we’re doing. We’re no mugs.

be a lot more work involved when developing an eCommerce website but the companies who we have worked with so far have had fresh ideas about how to market their products and that’s really satisfying. Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.

Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.

What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.

Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to

Are you busy? What kinds of businesses are you working with? Cog started properly at the beginning of this year and we’re getting busier. We’re always looking to take on exciting new projects and really 77

Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

We’re all looking for a new shopping experience. Somewhere to go to find something unique and not available all over the High Street. The Stone House on Ty Maen Farm, Ogmore is a gem of a find. We chat to Sarah Legg about what brings her customers from far and wide.

STONE HOUSE

Who is the owner of the business? Me, Sarah Legg and my husband Chris, and the children too. I work closely with Maggie Cooper and the rest of the team that I started Happy Days Vintage Homestore with. When was the business established? The Stone House was re-opened in October 2013 after it had been closed for two years, previously the building was known as Mouse House Antiques which had been going for twenty years. What products and services do you offer? The barn holds an eclectic mix of old, new and interesting interior and lifestyle pieces. We source from all over trying to stock items that can’t otherwise be found locally. We try to sell wares that aren’t run of the mill. I particularly love the Amish stars we have just found, all the way from Pennsylvania. We stock Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ it is amazing!

Our customers love it. We also sell The Painted House Rollers. We offer demonstrations and courses on both of these products. Where do your customers come from? Our customers come from all over, we’ve had visitors from Florida, Canada and Australia, and we do regular deliveries to London, but we love to see local people too on a regular basis. People pop in just in case they may miss something new that’s come in. It’s great because the majority of our wares are available in very small quantities, customers have begun to realise that they have to buy things when they see them or they miss out. You’ve recently undergone a refurbishment, why was that? Our customers told us we needed it - every day in fact. They loved the buildings and wished they could see more and stay longer. 78

The barns date back to the 14th Century so it was no easy task to get things completed but with a dedicated team and hard work it’s nearly finished – they worked non-stop even in the rain. But now we have more sales area, as well as a small kitchen offering tea and snacks, which is the one thing our customer continually asked for. Do you offer interior design services? If so, how does that work? We are continuously offering interiors advice. I think it comes naturally as soon as a customer begins talking about their home, and especially when we offer paint advice. Maggie is a fully qualified interior designer and offers great advice. We have an in house team that can source interior pieces, as well as an on-site upholstery service and local curtain maker, so we really are a one-stop-shop.

“ The barn holds an eclectic mix of old and new. ”

Do you offer products that you can’t get anywhere else? As we upcycle the majority of our items, we can ensure these are one-offs. We stock genuine French wares, Welsh Country pieces, and our European and British finds are mostly individual. What are your opening hours? We are open 5 days a week. Wed – Sun 10.30-5pm What makes The Stone House so special? The Stone House, or Ty Maen, which is the farm name that our buildings sit on translates as, is located on the Heritage Coastline at Ogmore by Sea. We are housed in 14th Century barns, courtyard and stables. Customers who enter the barn immediately feel surrounded by the warmth and nostalgia that the setting provides.

“ As we upcycled the majority of our items, we can ensure these are one-offs. We stock genuine French wares, Welsh Country pieces, and our European and British finds are mostly individual.” Christmas is just around the corner, do you offer gift vouchers? Yes we do. We understand that buying a gift for the home can be very individual, so our gift vouchers are perfect for this.

We print 10,000 copies of each edition and cut no corners on design, production and the quality of our print. Talking about printing, we source pretty much everything locally, and over 95% of Vale Life’s turnover is reinvested back into the community of South Wales. If you have a business and are interested in promoting your goods or services to an aspirational audience in the Vale then Vale Life is almost certainly right for you.
