WELCOME Ok, so the nights are darker and the weather can be cold, windy and wet, but there are still lots of things to enjoy over the winter months. Here’s what we love. Cosy nights by the fire, eating comfort food and drinking hot wintry drinks, wearing your onesie as soon as you get home from work (because it’s dark!), sitting next to a roaring fire in a pub and, my favourite, winter fashion (chunky jumpers, big coats, black tights, boots and lots and lots of sequins). Most of all, it’s about spending time with family and friends. Our winter issue brings you lots of ideas for the festive and winter season, courtesy of Blayze Fashions and Etc. of Penarth. Our fashion shoot was a real blast (helped of course by Prosecco!). The models and customers did owner of Blayze, Jacquie Dymock, proud and Konsa Micallef of Etc. opened the doors of Etc. to host the shoot. See both features on pages 10-11 and 12-13. Sticking with fashion, this issue brings you a round-up of Penarth Fashion Week which managed to raise much needed funds for the RNLI.
Choose Life
We’ve also got a bumper interiors feature, fabulous eateries to choose from and, if you’re looking to update your home, there are some great businesses to help you make those changes. Vale Life would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and peaceful and prosperous New Year. See you again in the spring. AROUND THE VALE BUY ING? S EL LI NG?
Vale Life Buy & Sell After much cajoling, we have created a Vale Life Buy & Sell page on Facebook. So, if you’d like somewhere to sell your unwanted and unused items, then this is a cheaper alternative to Ebay.
All we ask is that you be sensible no selling of ‘inappropriate’ things (items you would feel uncomfortable explaining what they are to a child or someone of a nervous disposition). Obviously no weapons please, and no members of family (no matter how tempting).
Always be safe… Always exercise caution when buying or selling items (especially valuable ones). Never see a buyer or seller alone. Vale Life Buy & Sell www.facebook.com/groups/ ValeLifeBuyAndSell

FUND RAISING
Porthcawl RNLI Emboldened by the success of the first Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival, and now that organisers have recharged their batteries, plans are underway to repeat the event in 2019. The favorable response from businesses, townspeople and all who supported the inaugural Festival has exceeded all expectations. The icing on the cake is that the truly amazing sum of £11,200 has been raised for Porthcawl RNLI. This is testament to the wholesome support we enjoy from the local community to whom we are extremely grateful.
Compliments of the season to all who support the RNLI in Porthcawl throughout the year. If you are a business owner in or around Porthcawl and would like to get involved in next year’s Festival, then please email jennifer@ goodlifepublishing.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you. TR AIL The word on the streets of Penarth is that there’s a new(ish) boutique that every woman who loves her fashion is shopping at. The boutique setting hearts on fire is Blayze in Glebe Street. Owner Jacquie Dymock is on a mission to bring affordable fashion to the women of Penarth and beyond – and she’s succeeding. As soon as you walk though the doors of Blayze, you are greeted, either by Jacquie herself or a member of her trusted team and you immediately feel relaxed. There are no egos here and no hard sell. You are left to browse the rails and advice is freely given if needed. Jacquie doesn’t mind if you don’t buy on the day. “Our stock changes daily,” says Jacquie. “We’re accessible and friendly. I love the fact that our regulars pop in sometimes two or three times a week – sometimes they see something that catches their eye, sometimes they don’t. That’s the fun of browsing at Blayze.” So, what’s on the rails? Plenty of choice of smart/casual clothing, suitable for women of all ages and sizes. 10
BLAYZER! “Whether you’re dressing for the school run, lunch with the girls, a meal with your other half or a special event, there’s something here for every occasion,” adds Jacquie. There’s a great selection of accessories too, including scarves, bags and jewellery.
Blayze Fashions 112 Glebe Street Penarth CF64 1EB
It’s no wonder the list of Blayze devotees is growing daily. Jacquie has been delighted with how the business has grown since it opened a year ago. Can’t get to the boutique? Don’t worry, there’s a fabulous new website available for shopping at home.

I asked Jacquie what her plans were for the future. “There are exciting plans on the horizon for Blayze for 2019. I can’t reveal everything at the moment but watch this space. 2019 is going to be our hottest year ever!”

Penarth has become well known for its quality eateries. From Michelin starred restaurants to independent cafés. One restaurant that is going from strength to strength is Etc. Vale Life chatted to owner Konsa Micallef to find out more.
ETC.
When did you take over Etc Konsa? I bought it in late 2017. What experience have you got in the industry? I have 19 years experience in the catering and hospitality industry most of which are from my years in London where I worked for some of the largest chains in the UK giving me the knowledge and wisdom thats lead me to owning my own place. I’m also very lucky as my fiancé Matt Zain, already a prevalent business owner in the hospitality industry has offered invaluable consulting advice which together has had a huge impact on the growth and development of the business, with both our creative ideas and eccentric taste. Our flare for creativity and quality has seen Etc reach new highs.
“Outstanding, unique menus.” 12
Congratulations, we hear you’ve won awards. Thank you. In the mere 15+ months that Etc has been under my ownership, it has been nominated for multiple awards for exceptional food and won the hearts of all who dine there. Etc focuses on originality and really is nothing like anything you may have experienced before. What does Etc offer its customers? Our top-class chefs create outstanding, unique menus time and time again, from frogs’ legs to smoking dishes, camel burgers to rainbow sushi. Whatever your dish of choice, Etc is renowned for adding the ‘Etc twist’ to make it one of a kind. The décor is gorgeous. Especially the Christmas decorations. If you visited Etc over a previous Christmas, you will know that the restaurant is transformed into a bright and vibrant wonderland.
We host some of the best decorations that any restaurant has ever seen, and this year is no different. In fact, this year it only gets getter. What’s on offer? Recently launched menus have seen the buzz around Etc only grow, with a unique Afternoon Tea including free flowing Prosecco and soon to be a Gentlemans Afternoon Tea (watch this space), hugely popular Sunday Lunches, with succulent, perfectly cooked meat, crispy roasties, homemade Yorkshire puddings and freshly made, homecooked gravy (what’s not to love?). Bespoke cocktails carefully created by our very talented bar team will certainly leave you wanting more, our most popular headliners are those with smoke and mystery and the occasional flame, all offering the best of both taste and theatre. 13
Gin Sunday evenings are now dedicated to cocktail lovers, with 241 on ALL Etc cocktails and half price spirits all evening. Thursdays – Motown, are hosted by a live singer each week which gives a lovely alternative to a meal out. Whatever the reason for your first visit, we can guarantee it won’t be your last so expect to dine like you’ve never dined before and prepare to fall in love with the exquisite restaurant that is, Etc. For all reservations and enquires please contact us via the details below. Etc. 1 Royal Buildings, Stanwell Road Penarth CF64 3EB 029 2009 0060 enquiries@etc-penarth.com www.etc-penarth.com All clothing available from Blayze Fashions
There are a smattering of good women’s boutiques in Penarth but, since the demise of the only men’s clothing shop recently, it left the town in need of somewhere for men to go. Thankfully, Lou’s for Men has now filled that gap beautifully. Vale Life chatted to Louise Smith, co-owner to find out more.
LOU’S FOR MEN
When was the business established? My husband Lyndon Smith and myself opened the shop on the 3rd of November 2018. Even though this is my shop, as I have always wanted to own a male clothing shop. My son and daughter are real designer freaks, so it’s really a family concern. We used to own a well-known Motor Factors in the south Wales known as LDS Motor Factors, which we sold two years ago, and this is my first adventure since selling that business. Why did you choose Penarth to open your business? We chose Penarth because we feel it is an up-and-coming area. It has lots of independent businesses and there’s nothing around at the moment that caters for the male industry.
What brands do you stock? We stock Gymking, Kingswell Dream, Nimes, Coture, Swade, Il Sarto, Certifed, Auroa, 4Bidden, 883 Police and also the British Bag Company. We are also in discussion with other brands we are hoping to stock around Christmas time. Do you also offer shoes and accessories?. We offer shoes that range from loafers to trainers. We have just ordered some Loyalty trainers which are arriving at the end of the month. This is really exciting as they are a well-known brand which are in high demand. We also offer a range of shoes for the more mature gentleman which include loafers for daytime and evening shoes. 14
We also stock a wide range of men’s accessories including belts, cufflinks and braces. Where do your customers come from? Our customers come from Penarth, Barry and other areas in the Vale. Do your clothes suit and fit men of all ages and sizes? We offer a wide range of clothing for men of all ages and sizes. Which items are proving popular? Kings Will Dream and Ilsarto are mega hits with the younger and more mature generation alike. The brand Swade has been a really good hit with the more mature gentleman, which we knew it would.
Do you offer gift vouchers? We offer multiple gift vouchers available. Perfect for when you’re not sure what to buy. These would make the perfect Christmas gift and are available instore. Are you available online? For those unable to get to us, we have an online presence. All items will be uploaded regularly.
What do you think makes Lou’s for Men special? Lou’s for men is special because of the location, the brands we stock and the customer service we provide. As the nearest men’s shop to us is in the centre of Cardiff, men can find all they need under one roof without having to travel 20/30 minutes to Cardiff, pay parking fees and struggle with the crowds.

The second Penarth Fashion Week in aid of the RNLI took place in October, with the huge support of the people and businesses of Penarth and surrounding areas and raised just over £16,000.
PENARTH FASHION WEEK
SAVING LIVES IN STYLE
This year, there was a second RNLI dress designed and made by Georgina-Grace Smith and her mum Angie Smith, worn by Mia Francis plus a second outfit designed and made by Elissa Mancusso - a onepiece navy swim suit with an RNLI puffa jacket worn by both Lucy Flynn and Lauren King. There were additions to last year’s events, including a Fashion Show with Afternoon Tea at Holm House Hotel with Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Peacocks, plus many others. The RNLI would like to thank the many local independent businesses, local schools, C3i Group and Events@ room11 for their involvement in this year’s Festival.
Vale Life were once again proud to be sole media sponsors for the event and would personally like to thank Amorio Cosmetics, SOHO Hairdressing, Dawn Clinic, Ener-chi Organics, Blu Hair Design, Wilmore’s 1938 and Refresh Skin Clinic for supporting us and enabling us to showcase the Festival in all its glory in both Vale Life and its sister publication, City Life Cardiff. As we go to print, we are unaware if there will be a Fashion Week next year in Penarth. Watch this space! You can still support the RNLI by visiting their website. The Penarth team are an exceptional group of people who risk their lives regularly to ensure the safety of everyone who uses our beaches and seas.
BLU H AIR DESIGN
We would like to thank our clients for their support for the RNLI Audience with Blu evening. It was a fantastic chilled evening with a great community feel.

We haven’t eaten Turkish cuisine for quite a while so when the opportunity to try Keyif in Penarth arose, we really were quite excited by the prospect.
Mehmet, Owner
Jennifer is a big fan of Morroccan food and my assumption was that the two countries would treat their ingredients quite similarly. We’d also heard good things about Keyif so we thought we were in for a treat. On arrival, the restaurant seemed quite light - some places get the lighting horribly wrong but this seemed just right. The staff couldn’t be more polite and welcoming. It didn’t feel ‘forced’. They made us feel like old friends - very natural and made us feel completely at ease. We ordered some drinks and opted for a selection of delicious, authentic starters to share which were beautifully presented (and tasty), and the perfect introduction for what was to follow. I chose Kleftico, basically an oven-baked lamb shank in mixed vegetable sauces, served with perfectly cooked rice.
K EYIF
This was nothing like our ‘meaty’ Welsh offering (which I love incidentally), but fresh with a rich tomato flavour - it’s Mediterranean heritage shone through. It was absolutely delicious.
Good coffee followed, together with some excellent conversation and travel tips form one of the waiters who, incidentally, is an absolute goldmine of information.
Jennifer chose the mixed grill, being a fan of anything barbecued, and she wasn’t disappointed. Perfectly marinated, skewered and cooked tender chicken and lamb, chicken and lamb kofte, plus lamb chops and a chicken wing.
To sum up, Keyif delivers five stars in every sense; the food, the service, the ambience is extraordinarily good and we will definitely return. And, in case you were wondering what ‘keyif ’ means, it’s Turkish and means ‘pleasure’, and this makes perfect sense because ‘keyif ’ perfectly describes our evening.
Being quite full, we opted to share a rice pudding, and what a rice pudding. This has to be the best rice pudding ever, seriously - rich, thick, creamy and moreish. So moreish in fact that a second was ordered almost immediately as any thoughts of sharing quickly disappeared.
“Keyif delivers five stars in every sense.” 20

How many of us put up with health problems that stop us living life to the full? Society’s attitude to chronic conditions, and to the ageing process, sends the unspoken message that we should just accept illness and pain as part of life.
A NGHAR AD E VANS
Angharad Evans has heard it all before. Twelve years ago, her busy life as a departmental head in a secondary school changed when she became very ill. She was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder, a potentially fatal illness where your immune system attacks your own body. Medication helped, but the side-effects were brutal. After months of dragging herself into work, using all her free time to rest, she “hit the wall” and took a year off to travel. “I just knew there must be another way,” she tells Vale Life. Once she got home, she visited a holistic therapist, whose tests revealed that her body was infected by parasites including Lyme disease and toxoplasmosis. Scary stuff – but Angharad learned that her health problems could be cured through diet and lifestyle changes. “I walked into that treatment room with what I feared was an incurable disease, and I walked out knowing I could get better.”
Although a full recovery took years, it started with that moment. She was inspired by the experience to quit her high-flying job and retrain as an allergy therapist and nutritional therapist. The philosophy that drives Angharad is that many of the health problems we write off as incurable can be helped if you take the time to investigate the cause. Her first session with a new client lasts two hours, so she can explore their medical history and lifestyle in depth before testing for pathogens. “It’s like peeling an onion – you identify what’s causing a symptom, but then you need to investigate the cause itself.” For example, a runny nose might be caused by an allergy, but rather than recommending antihistamines, Angharad would explore why the allergy developed. You leave with a “prescription” of significant dietary and lifestyle changes. “It’s not a quick fix. You’ve got to be prepared to make long-term changes to the way you live.” The hard work pays off. Angharad’s website (angharadevans.cymru) 26
shares glowing testimonials from people who’ve found the treatment life-changing. She helps people with all sorts of long-term conditions: IBS, gallstones, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, psoriasis, allergies, Fibromyalgia, unexplained aches and pains, a many more The idea that most health issues can be fixed through diet and lifestyle is pretty radical – but the results speak for themselves. Angharad’s challenge is: once you realise you have more control over your health than you think, are you ready to get better?

Hands up who has items of clothing in their wardrobe that you haven’t worn? Maybe it’s because you’ve lost or put on weight or simply that you just don’t feel right in them. Chances are that it’s not you, it’s that they don’t fit you properly.
CUT FOR SUCCESS
It was with this in mind that I took a big Lidl bag (other supermarkets are available) full of unworn to Glamorgan Tailoring in High Street Arcade hoping for owner Serena Hobson and her team to work her magic. A tailor will make your clothes look better because no one else in the world has a body exactly like yours. Those celebrities and well-dressed people you see wearing clothes with confidence – they went to a tailor. It’s kind of a secret weapon in stylish person’s arsenal. So, what can be achieved? I ask Serena. “My team and I offer basic repairs/ adjustments, hemming, cuffing, shortening (sleeves, pants, etc.), zippers replaced, add a hidden popper for blouses and taking in. All of these services, and more, can be done on any garment or item.” Says Serena. We go through my many items (trousers, jackets and skirts) and am impressed at the way Serena tells me how she’s going to adjust each piece.
Arms of jackets need shortening and, as I have a little waist, trousers and skirts need taking in. Not every waistband is made equally she tells me. “This one will have to be taken off completely and then taken in at the sides so as not to distort the A-line and lose the pocket positioning.” She says. Wow, that’s going the extra mile! Glamorgan Tailoring is located above Perfection Bridal so Serena is perfectly positioned. The brides simply take their dresses to her for any alterations needed. Glamorgan Tailoring also offer a dry cleaning service. A couple of weeks later, I pop back to pick up my newly altered clothes. I try them on at home and am delighted at how good they now look. It’s like having a new wardrobe of clothes to wear! A good tailor is like a good hair stylist. Once you find one you never want to let him or her go. I certainly know 30
where I’m going when I need things tailored. Go through your closet. Maybe something you had given up on just needed a little alteration love. Give Serena or one of her team at Glamorgan Tailoring a call. Happy tailoring!

Once the festive season is over, everyone starts to think about diets and detoxes! Whilst some will detox in the traditional sense, there’s a new trend of people who will look to take some downtime away from the screen in 2019; spending less time on social media and opting to spend more time in the ‘real’ world.
DIGITAL DETOX IN 2019? DREAM ON! However, one group of people who won’t be taking a digital detox this new year are some of our favourite online and independent sellers here in the Vale! After a busy festive period, a new year means it starts all over again, so it’s business as usual for them. With New Year sales to prepare for, Easter looming in April and even preparation for Christmas 2019! Vale Life spoke to some of Masons Self Storage’s favourite business customers to see what helps them get through to Christmas and beyond into the new year. Louis and Rhys, from Barrybados, describe how their trade picks up between the end of September and March, as dog walkers take to Barry Island and pop in while passing, along with those looking for Christmas presents and quirky stocking fillers.
“It's 24/7 and offers a professional service.”
Barry residents are keen to show their love for Barry! Although Louis and Rhys have The Beach Hut, the internet has helped broaden their Barry-loving audience across the globe; from hoodies and towels to window stickers, It’s not only Barry locals that are interested in Barrybados’ wares, in fact they have shipped Barrybados products as far as Australia! But what do these brands do with all of their extra stock in the lead up to the holidays and sales? Louis explained how once Barrybados stock took over his and his brother’s spare room, it was time to free up some space. Which is when he found Masons Self Storage. “It’s accessible 24/7, based on the edge of Barry, just ten minutes from Penarth and offers us a professional, personal service!” We spoke to two of Masons Self Storage’s other customers to find out more about how they use Masons, storing their additional stock at busier times of the year and taking advantage of 24/7 accessibility, 365 days a year. 32
In particular, Masons Self Storage’s new Business Zone, with wider corridors perfect for palleted stock and complete with a business lounge with free WiFi, work spaces and refreshments are perfect for sellers on the go. Thanks to the flexibility of Masons and their rolling contracts, once the Christmas rush is over, customers can scale up or down the size of their storage unit. Andrew from Haya Ltd, has been storing his additional stock with Masons Self Storage for over a decade! As a seller of excellent remote-control toys, Christmas is always a hectic period for sales. In particular, model tanks sales, within the UK and internationally increase by over a third at this time of year. Andrew sells mostly through online marketplaces, so staying online is vital for him. Although he does also have a wholesale and trade component to his business where he visits trade shows and sells to toy shops in addition to selling online. The run up to Christmas is also a crazy time for Jimmy from Leake’s Luxuries.
A new customer of Masons Self Storage, he was drawn to the facility as Leake’s Luxuries expanded and he had needed a safe, secure space for his stock. With over 1,000 products on the website, they sell a wide range of toys, including character toys and licensed items at affordable prices. However, with such a reliance on the internet and social media in particular, Jimmy and the team behind Leake’s Luxuries will definitely not be taking a digital detox! Being a smaller brand means that our favourite independent local sellers need to be just as active online to compete with more well-known high street brands. Luckily, you can help! With such a wide range of diverse and interesting independent brands here in the Vale, there’s always something going on and plenty of ways to treat your loved ones, whilst also supporting our local economy. So, whilst we might have the luxury of checking out of the digital world and detoxing in 2019, it’s business as usual for our favourite local independent online brands.

HIGH FLYERS If you shop at Hawkes in Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, you’ll already be aware that Russell looks after some of the biggest names in Welsh sport. Vale Life talked to Wayne Hall, Head of Sales of the Ospreys about their partnership.
How long have you been partnered with Russell at Hawkes? Ospreys are currently into the second season of a fantastic partnership. What does Hawkes provide for you and the players? A first-class professional service, a quality bespoke product, a product that is high-class and stands out from the crowd. Hawkes is ‘a cut above the rest’. What does having the players dressed in Hawkes attire mean to the players when attending events/ photocalls etc? All Ospreys staff certainly feel very special wearing Hawkes jackets and it demonstrates a “Team Ethos” when dressed in the same off-field attire. From top to bottom, on and off the playing field, Ospreys Rugby are a professional organisation and wearing Hawkes clothing at post-match functions, plus VIP events it brings both players and the management team together as one, and demonstrates that we are a real team. As a business we would like to take it to the next stage and have Ospreys directors wearing Hawkes.
What has it been like working with Russell? Not for Russell’s eyes or ears really! Russell is one of life’s good men and, during our partnership, nothing has been too much trouble. He is always on hand to take a call and extremely accommodating. He will address all requests and issues himself personally and offers a personal interest to all who deal with Hawkes. He never turns his back on business.
W H A T R U S S E L L S AY S
Ospreys & Hawkes It just felt right as many of the boys shop with me anyway. I’ve been looking after the Ospreys players since Ryan Jones’s wedding a long time ago! He’s been a great ambassador to Hawkes along with George North, who often pops in. I guess I’m trying to get the message across that we can cater for all shapes and sizes.
What were the high points of last season? On field standards were slightly below par but from a commercial prospective linking up with partners such as Hawkes has demonstrated how great brands can work in tandem. What are your hopes and aspirations for the team for 2019? Continue to improve on and off the field as a team and business - work ever closer with our commercial partners and, hopefully, together we will become stronger. Always aspire to be the best in all we do together as a team (players, commercially, and management). 36

BROGUE DOES BEAUJOLAIS IV This is the fourth event organised by dynamic duo, Chris Macnamara of The Brogue Trader and Spiro Borg of Cornerstone (and Spiro’s fine dining caterers).
This year’s beneficiaries of Brogue Does Beaujolais IV are City Hospice based in Whitchurch and the cardiac ward at UHW (Heath Hospital) Cardiff, as we go to press over £33,500 has been raised. Chris Macnamara said, “It’s been a phenomenal event this year. Our little team has pulled out all the stops and we’ve raised a lot more than we thought we would , so we are absolutely delighted.” Such is the popularity of Brogue Does Beaujolais, it attracts many celebrities from the sporting community and huge support from the great and good of the business communities of Cardiff and south Wales. If you were fortunate to have purchased a ticket this year (as they sell like hot cakes), you would have been rubbing shoulders with the likes of footballer Ian Rush, rugby players including Rhys Williams, boxer Nicky Piper, and the ‘very, very charming’ Rupert Moon.
“Our little Beaujolais celebration is becoming extremely popular in Cardiff and, being invitation only, one of the most sought after events on the capital’s social calendar.” The event is funpacked from the word go. “Beaujolais Day kicked off at midday with a champagne reception. Speeches and acknowledgments followed, then lunch of five wonderful courses with matching wine were served by our talented Cornerstone team,” says co-host Spiro Borg. By all accounts, the food was superb and this year over 170 attended the event which finished at 10pm. A Q&A was followed by acclaimed funny man, Rod Woodward of Royal Variety fame, then Big Macs Wholly Soul Band rocked the rafters into the evening. “All table sales and all the proceeds generated from the live auction and raffle (as in every penny), goes directly to the chosen charities. The day is entirely funded by Spiro and I, the venue, the waiting staff, the food, the table wine, the entertainment and many of the auction prizes we personally 38
donate as we want every pound raised to go to the fantastic causes. The day costs us in excess of £10,000 to put on but it’s worth every penny,” adds Chris. Chris would especially like to thank Laing’s the jewellers for donating £2,000 of jewellery, Russel from for donating a bespoke jackt for the auction, Bryan Gunton for his magical skills and donating an evening in his theatre, Sam Warburton for signing fifteen rugby balls for the raffle and store partners and supporters such as the Welsh Rugby Union, Football Association Wales, Sony and NatWest for purchasing and hosting tables and bringing along some amazing sporting legends. Finally, Chris would like to thank the table hosts, attendees and everyone who bid for the auction prizes. “All our guests should be very proud, they’ve made a massive contribution to the overall success of the event and a huge impact on the chosen charities. We are eternally grateful.” said Chris, “See, #morethanashoeshop!” You can’t argue with that.

The Zeraschi family name is synonymous with Barry Island and this year celebrating sixty years of trading on one of the Vale’s iconic tourist destinations, they have fulfilled a life-long dream by opening Zio’s Gelateria.
ZIO’S GELATERIA Vale Life popped in to the beautifully furnished gelateria for a quick chat with owner Tino. Why did you want to open a gelateria? It’s always been a passion of mine to make our own gelato. My grandfather and his two sons Franc and Joe used to make and sell ice cream in the Cynon valley when they first came to Wales. I had this opportunity to fulfil my dream with my niece Mariana - making gelato and sorbets to old traditional recipes. It’s a real pleasure making it and seeing the enjoyment from our customers. There was no doubt that Barry Island was crying out for a genuine gelateria.
What do you both love most about making gelato? The beautiful thing about making gelato is that you can mix and match the flavours with cones, waffles, pancakes, while having a relaxing view of Whitmore Bay. How many flavours are there? Including sorbets, we can produce thirty-six flavours.
Which are your favourites and what are your best sellers? That’s a hard question to answer but when my brother Marco comes in, he chooses vanilla, being a traditional kind of person, but he says he hasn’t tasted anything as good as our lemon sorbet since visiting Italy.
“You can pop in for a coffee and piece of cake and just watch the world go by in comfort.” 40
Can you hire it for parties and private functions? Yes, it’s perfect for parties but I have no doubt that some adults will hire it in the future - especially those that love good quality ice cream. I think it would make a really fun and quirky place for a business to hold a meeting.
When are you open? We’re open all year round so besides ice cream, you can pop in for a coffee and piece of cake and just watch the world go by in comfort. It’s a great place to people watch. Zio’s Gelateria 5 Western Shelter, Paget Road, Barry Vale Of Glamorgan CF62 5TQ Photography Kevin Moore

Brothers Marco and Tino Zeraschi are the owners of legendary Barrybados café, Marco’s (who can forget the café’s regular appearance on Gavin & Stacey?). We can’t deny our love for Marco’s. It’s one of our go-to destinations for great coffee and good company.
ISLAND LIFE
Originally from Bardi in the Parma province of Italy their grandparents moved to the Welsh Valleys in 1898, with father, Francesco, selling ice cream from a barrow and helping out in the Penrhiwceibr café owned by his parents. The family moved to Barry in 1967 and has grown substantially to include Marco and his wife (and rock) Ruth; his three sons Nino, Gianni, Mauro and daughter Mariana - plus nine grandchildren. There are now three generations of the Zeraschi family working in their businesses across Barry Island. Marco tells us more…
In 1977 we opened the Rock Shop selling candy, candyfloss and confectionery - including sticks of Barry Island rock - this is now run by my sons Gianni and Mauro. The children own and run several businesses on the Island.
Marco, can you tell us about your businesses on the Island? Yes, our first business on the Island was the Piccolo Bar way back in 1958, that’s now run by my daughter Mariana and her partner Nathan - serving the best burgers in town, and ice cream of course.
We’ve also had some other high profile celebrities here including David Cameron, and the First Minister who visited the café and enjoyed our ice creams and coffees.
But, of course, the business we are most well-known for is the famous Gavin and Stacey centrepiece, Marco’s Cafe. That TV programme was by far the best thing to have happened to Barry Island - the Gavin and Stacey tours still call here and visitors come to take photos of Marco’s Café regularly.
What changes have you seen over the years? Well it’s been a roller coaster journey over the years but there are definite signs of a bright future for the Island. Most of the traders have been here for many years and we’re like one big happy family. I’m sure I speak for us all when I say how great it is to have the fun fair back open. We know you’re a big supporter of charity events, can you tell us about some of these? My favourite event of the year is the visit to the Island by the Variety Club each September. All the local traders pull together to give these less fortunate children the best day of their lives; they enjoy food and drinks, all donated by our local traders - it’s certainly a special day for us all.
“Great coffee… with a lovely view out to sea.” 42
Then there’s the Barry Festival of Transport in June with the Red Arrows display team and fireworks, the European food market, the annual Boxing Day and New Year’s Day swim - with bacon rolls and a hot cuppa for everyone. We’re always willing to help out in any way we can with charity and fundraising events on the Island.
“I love spending time with my family.” Do you have any plans for the future? Yes; to keep Barry Island a fun, family destination - for families, run by families, and to help create a new Barry Island with traders and the council working closely together and pulling in the same direction to make the Island a major tourist attraction once again. I honestly believe that we have what it takes to make Barry Island the No.1 tourist attraction in Wales.
You sound incredibly busy - how do you manage a work/life balance? I love spending time with my family simple things like picnics and enjoying the outdoors with them. I enjoy working hard with my family; I feel I am a very lucky man. 43

There’s no better recommendation than word of mouth, so when Deborah and Gareth Maidment and their family from Llanharry, needed an optometrist, their friends recommended Davies and Jones, Talbot Green. We were delighted to meet with the Maidments at the practice and here’s what Deborah had to say about the fantastic service they receive.
DAVIES & JONES OPTOMETRISTS
How long have you and your family been visiting Davies and Jones? We’ve been customers of theirs for about ten years now. Who makes up your family? There’s myself and husband Gareth, our eldest son Iestyn (15), Dafydd (14) and six-year-old Ffion. What services do Davies and Jones offer you and your family? All of us have regular eye tests. Myself, Gareth and Dafydd all wear glasses, so we have annual check-ups. Gareth also wears contact lenses which are provided by Davies and Jones. How do you find working with them? From the moment you walk into the reception we are welcomed by very friendly, professional and efficient staff.
Even when the practice is busy, the front of house staff always make time to speak to us and make our children feel very welcome and relaxed. The opticians are all very professional and always make us feel very welcome. Crucially for us, which is one of the most important reasons why we continue to use the practice, is their ability to be person centred. They spend time talking and explaining things to you, which is especially important to us having a sixyear-old and a child with physical and learning disabilities. We also can’t forget Dispensing Optician Cath, who always greets us and the children by name and makes Dafydd feel so at ease, supporting him in choosing appropriate glasses.
“Friendly, professional and efficient staff.” 44
How do they accommodate your 14-year-old son? Dafydd has autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and physical difficulties and needs to use a wheelchair. The team at Davies and Jones always greet Dafydd with sincerity and friendliness, they always listen attentively to what he wants to talk to them about, which makes him feel comfortable and at ease. Due to his physical difficulties, they are very accommodating and will always ensure that he is seen in an accessible room. Whichever optician he sees, he or she spends time talking to Dafydd before doing the examination in order to ensure he is relaxed. They are happy to answer all of the numerous questions he fires at them and will explain what they are doing at each step of the examination.
Dafydd has been diagnosed with a condition called Drusen. The team were very efficient in recognising that there was an issue with his eyes and promptly referred him to the eye specialist at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and did their best not to panic him. As a continuation of monitoring his condition, Davies and Jones take regular photos of the back of his eye and show Dafydd the pictures, so he is always kept informed, as he is a very inquisitive boy. Dafydd frequently loses or breaks his glasses the team always ensure there is a spare pair kept for him so that he is not left without them for any length of time as they are aware it causes him distress. Who do you work with at the practice? Is there any one practitioner in particular? We work with Ian Jones regularly also Owain and Danielle Mealing,
but Danielle more often than anyone else. We most often work with Cath Coles, the Dispensing Optician, who is particularly great at understanding Dafydd. Are you happy with their services? Yes, they go over and above on a regular basis. Would you recommend Davies and Jones to others? We regularly have and will continue to do so as we feel that although Davies and Jones are a relatively large group of practices, it still feels like a small family run business. There is good continuity of staff which is important to us with our son’s needs.

Kaely Backland of Usk welcomed us into her beautiful home and told us why she chose to work with Alexander James Bifold. How did you hear about Alexander James? I wanted some beautiful bifold doors. I researched online and found the Alexander James Bifolds website. I liked the look of it. It looked very professional and gave me the confidence to give the company a call. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? They came across very professional, both on the phone and when their representative, Andrew, initially came out to talk about their products and service before and after installation. What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They installed a set of bi-folding doors with four doors which open on to the garden. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? I already had PVC bi folding doors which were a substandard product and not fit for purpose. After talking with Andrew from Alexander James, and going with his advice to choose their aluminium product, I couldn’t be happier. The doors are not only a better quality product but, aesthetically, they are more pleasing - especially since I could almost choose any colour I wanted and, finally, the big plus - they actually work! Before I hardly bothered opening the PVC doors but now I use them all the time. I was so pleased with the work from this company that I have been back to fit all new windows throughout the property as well!

HAPPY DAYS
Walk through the doors of Happy Days Vintage Homestore and you don’t know quite where to look as there’s so much to see. The best way we thought was to go in a clockwise direction, so we didn’t miss anything. It’s known as the biggest destination in town and we could see why. We normally chat as we’re walking around shops but we were both concentrating and taking everything in. It’s packed to the rafters with 30 local small businesses stocking unique items from restored vintage and antique furniture, curios, funky American imported clothing, collectable toys, jewellery and unique handcrafted gifts. Apparently the vinyls from 60s to the 90’s are very popular.
“You could easily spend a morning or afternoon here.”
We may still be in winter, but spring is just around the corner, so the front of the shop will soon have a great range of cast aluminium bistro sets, stone urns and pots and vintage utensils. On our visit, the store was busy; I’m guessing it was because visitors know that the stock changes regularly. It’s also a great place to mooch around if the weather is poor – which is was on our visit. There were a good mix of age groups - lots of people our age but also quite a few younger couples too; obviously looking for those lovingly restored pieces for their future home together. It was time for a cuppa, so we made our way to the tearoom and were greeted by Deb - a very charismatic, fun-loving lady with many a tale to tell! The menu was full of home-cooked comfort food – think corned beef pie and freshly made sandwiches. 48
We fancied something sweet with our coffees but it was a tough choice between the moreish looking scones, home-made cake, tart or crumble. We opted for a scone and lemon drizzle cake - both delicious! You could easily spend a morning or afternoon here but I warn you, it could become addictive.

MY VALE L IFE
What do you love about work? Pretty much everything except the early mornings! I think it’s important to keep exercising the brain as you get older but I love working with the general public which I have done now for fifty years. What do you do to relax? By the time I get home of an evening it’s pretty late but the one thing that is guaranteed to help me relax is watching and listening to David Attenborough! Where do you eat out? Favourite food? The one thing in the Vale is the variety of restaurants so there is always somewhere that suits the occasion. If we take the children with us there are several places that welcome and cater for them like the Three Horseshoes in Moulton. I love a really good carvery.
Where do you live? I live in the West end of Barry which is within walking distance of my favourite place, Porthkerry Park. What do you love about The Vale of Glamorgan? Being a bit of a shopaholic I love the unique, friendly shops in High Street, Barry, Cowbridge and Penarth. These are the places I combine meeting up with friends, shopping and, always, a very nice lunch. Summer time we are spoilt for choice with the superb beaches around the Vale where I spend precious days off with my grandchildren. What is your occupation? I am Manager of Atlantic Self Storage. Steve Collier, who owns the company, has been one of my closest friends for over twenty years. I met him when he ran a very successful business, Ornamental Iron, providing a service to the local Council and customers all over Wales. During the many years in the iron and steel business he employed over seventy people. He subsequently sold the business.
As time went by, Steve saw the ever demanding need for self-storage and embarked on a new venture slowly but surely converting the whole of his trading estate into a first class storage business which he has practically built himself. At the time I had been an estate agent for over twenty years and decided to join him three years ago combining our experience.

We now provide 500 storage units and a vast selection of external containers, which are run in a friendly, professional way - in keeping with the old fashion service people like myself really miss. Making the business a personal, social experience has been very rewarding. Describe a typical working day? First thing tea! Check emails and answer all overnight enquiries. Process all movements of units and payments. Throughout the day there is a continuous stream of customers in and out, signing up, moving out and viewing units (which we encourage) to ensure that they have the right size unit for their needs. Late afternoon we check all the units are secure and in tip top condition. 49

Kevin Moore’s passion for photography was ignited when his employer sent him on a photographic course. He hasn’t looked back and is happiest doing what he loves most - street photography around Cardiff and the Vale.
LIFE ON THE STREET When did you first become interested in photography? First became interested in photography in the early 1990s, (the job that I was doing at the time required that I became familiar with a camera). My employers sent me on a photographic course, covering the use of film and dark room procedures, as well as gaining an understanding of photographic techniques, light composition etc. This was my initiation into photography. Please describe your style of photography… Documentary would describe it best. This is what I attempt to do each time I walk the streets. I am documenting people and life. I spend my time walking the streets looking for a creative shot, an intriguing face, because the streets are where life is. What attracts you to street photography? The reason why I enjoy street photography is because it’s unpredictable, it is never the same.
On the street you work with whatever light is available, once you frame and compose an image, you either get it or it’s lost in a second and that moment has gone forever. Street photography for me is about telling a story about the people and the era that I live in. Everything from protests, parades, fashion, culture, the street is where the world shows its face, and where it comes alive. Street photography has such a wide meaning, it can cover so many different genres, and you mould it to your style of photography, but for me it’s about documenting life, people, and the environment they live in. What equipment do you use? I shoot in both digital and film - mostly black and white. I only ever use prime lenses, 28mm and 35mm are my lenses of choice. I choose these for a number of reasons, they are light, fast glass, and allow me to get close to whatever I’m photographing.
“It’s about documenting life.” 50
Which photographers inspire you? Do you have a few favourites? Street photographers work that has inspired me are Helen Levitt, Vivian Mayer, William Klein, also the work of Steve McCurry is incredible.
Have you exhibited your work? How could readers see it? I’m hoping to have an exhibition of my work in the near future. Watch this space.

Gillian Whittaker of Llantwit Major was very happy she chose to work with Craig and Dina Harewood of Future Ideal in Barry. We chatted to Gilly in her beautiful home to find out more.
FUTURE IDEAL HOMES
How did you hear about Future Ideal? I had been researching windows that would not only offer better insulation but not compromise the style and look of our house. Eventually I found the Resident 9 windows and followed a link on their website to approved installers in south Wales leading me to Future Ideal Homes. What work did they do for you? Future replaced all 13 old wooden frame windows in our house with high quality Resident 9 wood effect uPVC windows, a Solidor Stable door at the back, the porch windows and a Solidor front door. Did you contact other companies for quotes? Yes, I contacted 4 other companies which all gave to quotes. What made you want to work with Future? As soon as I spoke to Craig and Dina they listened to what I wanted with none of the hard sell that I experienced with other window companies. As my husband works long hours it was my responsibility to find a company and manage the job.
I found both Craig and Dina to be very friendly, unintimidating and easy to work with throughout the whole process. Did they give you lots of ideas and information? They didn’t as I already had a clear picture of what I wanted, and they respected that. Future went out of their way to accomplish what I had envisioned, with a final result that we are exceptionally pleased with. How long did the work take to complete? After first contact Craig and Dina were very quick to visit our house, discuss what I wanted and take measurements for a quote. Once we had decided to go forward with the project it took 6 weeks for the windows to be made and delivered to Future. The following week the Future team installed all the windows and doors. They worked extremely hard and completed the job in just 4 days. Were they prompt, clean and tidy and respectful of your home and belongings? Yes. The team was very professional and cleaned up every day. 53
Were you pleased with the final outcome? We are extremely pleased. Their attention to detail was amazing and finished the job to an extremely high standard. What difference has the work done in the way you now use your home? The house already feels warmer and quieter. We are looking forward all the benefits this will bring us over the winter months. As well as many hours saves during the summer as the old wooden windows needed yearly sanding and painting and our new windows are almost maintenance free. Would you be happy to recommend Future to others? Absolutely. We also have more work that needs completing on our and already plan to using Future to undertake the work.

Choosing a venue for your wedding is one of the first things to tick off your todo list. Vale Life chatted to bride and groom Claire and Bob on why they chose Miskin Manor as their venue for their big day.
E XCLUSIVELY BESPOKE How long have you and Bob been together? Claire - It will be four years in January (wow, that’s gone fast!)
When and where did you meet? Claire - We met via a dating app which I guess is quite a regular circumstance nowadays. I had worked in musical theatre for years and because it’s quite a close-knit industry with very irregular working hours, you don’t really get to meet that many people outside of other actors or people who work in theatre. I really wanted to meet someone outside of this circle, so I thought I’d give the dating app scene a try. I went on a few dates and then met Bob and the rest is history! Why did you choose Miskin Manor for your wedding venue? Claire - We wanted somewhere near my home (Newport) because of family reasons but just couldn’t seem to find what we wanted. Then I remembered Miskin Manor from various wedding receptions I have sang at in the past.
As soon as we drove up to the building, we knew it was exactly what we were looking for. The exclusivity option is what absolutely sold it to us. Bob is an event designer by trade, so we were ideally looking for somewhere that we really could make our own, with lots of breakout spaces with different activities in each so people could explore, interact and also catch up in private. Having all the rooms available to us allowed us to do this. The fact that it would just be us and our guests in the building was also extremely appealing. It meant that everybody at the wedding could completely relax and enjoy themselves without impeaching on other hotel guests’ evenings or feeling they were limited to certain areas. It added to the wedding atmosphere tenfold and all for a really affordable price. Did you shop around? Bob - If I'm honest, from the moment we were shown around the venue, we were pretty much set on it. 62
We then invited our parents to come and see, and once we saw the looks on their faces as well, we booked there and then.
Who was your wedding co-ordinator and how was the process? Claire - Emily was our wedding coordinator and I think it was actually her first one which was lovely! She did a stellar job as did all the staff there. They couldn’t have been more accommodating. I visited a couple of times and the process was really easy, especially considering we had so many different decorations and activity spaces all over the place! It could easily have been a lot more stressful, but they really did organise everything so well.
“As soon as we drove up to the building, we knew it was exactly what we were looking for. ”

Tell us about the big day. Bob - The Big Day was in a word, perfect. Normally with events I will stress and worry that things will go as planned, and for this I had even pre-briefed the groomsmen for rigging the staging and breakout spaces etc on the morning of the wedding, but Miskin Manor completely took all the stresses away. The staff were on hand to set everything up for me, so I didn't even have to think about it, this coupled with the fact that having exclusivity meant we could move the guests around holistically whilst other rooms were changed/rigged was amazing. What did you choose as your wedding breakfast? Claire - as it was near Christmas, we went with the Christmas dinner option. The food was absolutely sensational and there was so much of it! I think if your guests are happy with the food that’s half the battle and people were just raving about it.
Would you recommend Miskin Manor to others and, if so, why? Claire - Completely, I couldn’t recommend it more highly. I think I’ve already passed the details on to a few friends who were looking. Both the exterior and interior are gorgeous, and the fact that we could have the ceremony at the same place as the reception was more ideal than I initially realised. Everyone’s hotel rooms were beautiful and the fact that everyone was on-site was just so lovely. It meant no one had to rush off at any point and I think the party carried on way past when Bob and I went to bed as there’s even a 24-hour bar! It also meant we could all have breakfast together and Bob and I could thank everyone properly the next day, plus we all had use of the spa the next day too which was a nice option. I have to properly mention the staff too - we didn’t have to lift a finger on the day and everything just ran so smoothly. 63
From the wedding team to the restaurant staff to the reception team, everyone was so professional and friendly. Did you have a honeymoon? If so, where did you go? Bob - We did indeed, however with work commitments, it was a little later than planned. We went to St Lucia in the Caribbean, it was beyond incredible and definitely worth the wait.

If you ask most parents why they chose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe their child will a) receive a better standard of education, b) have better opportunities for future careers, c) be more disciplined, and d) benefit from small pupil-teacher ratios.

In its 125 year history, Cae Court has been many things; a residential home, surgery and home to a doctor and his family, the town register office and a probation office. The latest incarnation for this beautiful Grade II Listed building in the heart of Bridgend is something altogether a more glamorous hotel, restaurant and bar.
CAE COURT
Cae Court is a beautiful boutique hotel and restaurant in the heart of Bridgend. The town has some beautiful old buildings and Cae Court, a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture, is certainly one of them. So, its transformation into a gorgeous boutique hotel and restaurant, is not only most welcome, it seems the logical progression for this stunning building. Cae Court’s design evolution is completely contemporary. Its eight beautifully decorated rooms were designed by London interior designers Patrick Jaeger Associates and the attention to detail is unsurpassed. Guests can luxuriate in the spa-esque bathrooms and envelope themselves in 100% Egyptian cotton bed linen.
The thought of sinking into a 6ft Robert Langford Monarch mattress under a White Company duvet with a choice of feather or microfibre pillows to top it off sounds extremely inviting. If that doesn’t guarantee us a perfect night’s sleep, I’m not sure what would! The hotel’s two Deluxe rooms boast restful views of St. Mary’s Church, Nolton and all rooms are accessible by passenger lift and offer air conditioning, underfloor heating, Wi-Fi and room service. A disabled-friendly room is also available. Overlooking the River Ogmore, and towards Newcastle Church, the restaurant is a stunning, contemporary, 40 cover contemporary dining space.
The proprietors, who also own and run the Harbour Bar and Kitchen and Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl, are clearly proud of the restaurant: “We want people to come and sample our menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner and private functions, or simply call in for a cocktail, and enjoy our exquisite surroundings and exemplary service. We’re confident that we will meet even the most discerning expectations. Our head chef, Barnaby Hibbert joined Cae Court with a background in fine dining and brings to the table an extraordinary talent for fusing flavours and techniques from his extensive repertoire.”
“We’re confident that we will meet even the most discerning expectations.” 66
Cae Court are passionate about working with local suppliers. The hotel sources the finest ingredients and grows many of its own herbs and, we are reliably informed, that the traditional Sunday Lunch is very special, so we’re really looking forward to trying what's on offer. A children’s menu is also available.

Adjoining the restaurant is the newly revamped Cae Court Lounge bar. A truly relaxing space for pre or post dinner drinks or cocktails. It is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day or just relaxing with friends. The proprietors are confident that Cae Court will become not only popular with locals from Bridgend, The Vale of Glamorgan and south Wales, but also a destination hotel for tourists across the
UK and beyond – a stunning base from which to explore our beautiful local and enjoy the rich culture, creativity and breathtaking countryside and coastline this part of Wales has to offer. 67
If you’ve been following us on Facebook, you’ll probably have seen that our home and office mascot, Lucy the Jack Russell, was mauled by an Alsatian while out walking in Porthkerry Park, near Barry, on Saturday 24th November at around 11am.
LIFE SAVER
We were walking along a narrow path at the top of Porthkerry woods when a couple approached us with an Alsatian on a lead. As we passed, the Alsatian turned on Lucy. The whole incident took no more than twenty to thirty seconds. I insisted we take Lucy to the Vale Veterinary Centre just to check her over and, as it turned out, it was the right decision. As it was an emergency, when we arrived at the vets, we saw Simona Panait immediately. We noticed that Lucy’s tummy was very bruised and bulging - clearly our little lady was in trouble. At this point, Simona took over, instructing reception to cancel her appointments for the afternoon - she was going to have to operate on Lucy immediately if there was a chance to save her life.
We left Lucy in Simona’s capable hands and left. We would keep in touch by WhatsApp. At this point we were just hoping and praying she would pull through. Honestly, inside our hearts were breaking. Simona telephoned us later on and told us the operation had gone well. Slowly but steadily, over the next two days, Lucy improved and by the middle of the week was her bright eyed self again. She will have to be careful going forward - her spleen had to be removed, and her liver is not functioning as well as it did before. We are eternally grateful for Simona’s efforts. Without any doubt, Lucy wouldn’t be here today if it hadn’t been for Simona and the Vale Vets team pulling out all the stops. We simply can’t thank them enough. We’d also like to thank everyone for their kind 68
messages on social media. It really meant a lot - we didn’t realise Lucy had such a large fan club.

No better testimonial than a happy one! “We’ve been taking our dog Winnie the cockapoo (aged 9) to Joanne for about 5 years now. We’ve tried numerous groomers, but Winnie found the whole experience traumatic, until we encountered Joanne. This lady certainly is the dog whisperer! Winnie is so excited to go to Joanne as Joanne kisses and cuddles her and you just know Winnie’s in safe hands. Being hairdressers ourselves, we possibly are a tad fussier than the average person when it comes to Winnie having her fur cut but Joanne is an exceptional cutter.
We have never been disappointed. She books us in every five weeks each year to keep our pooch looking sharp! We can honestly not recommend Joanne enough. Adrian Gee www.k9kabin.co.uk thek9kabin@gmail.com The K9 Kabin

April parked her van outside my home so that I could see exactly what was going on. She showed me all of the equipment and it was spotlessly clean. Before returning to Wales, Mr Moss completed Pathway – a Specsavers programme aimed at training staff members to become business partners.‘This is an exciting next step in my career, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous,’ he says. ‘Fortunately, everyone has been very welcoming, and I’m looking forward to using my expertise to support the growth of the business.’ Mr Moss’ appointment comes just months after the store was first opened by Ms Davies and Mr Thomas, who have been directors of the Specsavers in Talbot Green for the last five years.

Why did you choose to work with Hrt? I bought the property through HRT and I was happy with the service I received, so reselling it through them was an easy decision. How is the experience? Great so far. This is the first house I’ve bought and sold in the Vale and they’ve given some excellent advice and guidance along the way. Would you be happy to recommend them? Of course I would. From my perspective HRT are the most prominent estate agency in the Vale and my experiences to date demonstrate why. Will definitely work with them again soon. What Is the property's bestselling feature? We’ve brought our distinctive style of city living into the beautiful rural setting of Peterston Super Ely. Why did you choose to work with Hrt? We felt that HRT had a better coverage in the area when compared with other local agents. How is the experience? We are very happy with the level of communication and commitment from HRT. Would you be happy to recommend them and why? Yes, we are very happy with the overall service and find the team at HRT friendly and approachable. What do you feel is the bestselling feature of your property? After renovating the property extensively, we love the fact that the exterior appears as an Old Stone Cottage, but the interior is actually a new build, giving us the best of both worlds. We love the location of this highly desirable area.

Why did you choose to work with Hrt? I chose to work with HRT as they were highly recommended from a work colleague who found that they were extremely professional and accommodating at all times. How is the experience? So far we are extremely happy with the service, understandably we are selling our house at a difficult time of the year and also with Brexit looming people are a little hesitant to look but I believe HRT have done everything that they can to market our house to prospective purchases. Would you be happy to recommend them and why? Yes, they are very proactive and always helpful with advice. What do you feel is the bestselling feature of your property? R IVERFORD R ECIPES TURKEY MEATBALL BROTH WITH GREENS Fancy creating this mouth-watering dish using the fresh, seasonal and always organic produce, delivered free to your home from Riverford Organic Farmers? Here’s how.
Easy to scale up to serve more, these meatballs could be made with chicken or pork mince, but turkey is a good lean meat and is often available from Riverford over the winter months. Its leanness makes it prone to drying out, so adding milk-soaked breadcrumbs keeps the meatballs moist, as does poaching them in the stock. The onion, carrot and celery add an extra flavour, but a good stock is really essential here – we of course recommend the chicken stock we sell, if you don’t make your own. SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS n 50g white bread, blitzed into crumbs n 1 tbsp milk n 250g minced turkey n 1 large egg yolk n 1 tbsp finely chopped sage n 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley n Sunflower or light olive oil, for frying n 1 large or 2 small onions, finely diced n 1 large carrot, peeled and finely diced n 1 celery stick, finely diced n 300g shredded green cabbage (e.g. Savoy or January King) n 1 litre chicken stock n Salt and black pepper n Small handful of finely grated Parmesan, to serve 75
METHOD In a large bowl, stir the breadcrumbs into the milk. Add the turkey, egg yolk, sage and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and use your hands to mix and squidge it together well. Roll into walnut-sized balls. Heat a thin layer of oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the meatballs to lightly brown them all over (cook in batches if they don’t all fit). Transfer to a plate. Add the onion, carrot and celery to the same pan and cook for 15–20 minutes on a low heat, until tender but not coloured, stirring now and then. If the veg looks like catching at any point, add a splash of water. Add the meatballs, cabbage and stock. Simmer for 5–6 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through (cut one open if you’re not sure) and the cabbage wilted. Check the seasoning and serve sprinkled with the Parmesan. VA R I AT I O N S n This works equally well with shredded kale or even Brussels sprouts. n Try minced chicken or pork.

Living with dementia According to the Alzheimer's Society, there are around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia. One in 14 people over 65 will develop dementia, and the condition affects 1 in 6 people over 80. Until recently dementia was thought of as a nasty consequence of getting old. Now however there is a clear understanding that dementia is a disease of the brain and a great deal of charitable funding is being targeted at research to eradicate it. Unlike other diseases like cancer, there is currently no NHS funding for dementia and so those living with it have to fund their own nursing and residential care. This can put a great strain on finances as many elderly people use their savings to fund the care of a partner, or children have to give up work to care for their parents. There are few financial arrangements that cater specifically for helping people with dementia funding - but by using a careful investment strategy and considering a variety of income options, it is possible to ensure capital is used wisely and provides income for longer periods of care.
At Magenta, we see families torn apart by the effects of this horrible disease – relationships deteriorating with disagreements about responsibilities; beneficiaries struggling to manage finances where Wills and Powers of Attorney have not been put in place; and sadly, elderly people let down by poor quality care or falling victim to fraud. Magenta is proud to be working towards being a Dementia Friendly Business and is passionate about developing our services to help those living with Dementia and their support network. We are specialists in facilitating discussions with families about money and arranging Powers of Attorney.
82
Our team are all Dementia Friends and have the necessary skills to work with those living with dementia as well as their family and carers. If you or a loved one is living with dementia and you are concerned about finances and options, then please feel free to call for a friendly chat to see how we might help. Arthur is the new Trainee Office Dog at Vale Solicitors and shares some hints on making life easier for his hard-working Solicitors at Christmas. 1. Don't get arrested Vale Solicitors are members of the Cardiff and Vale Duty Solicitor service providing legal support for anyone in police custody 24 hrs a day 365 days a year - including Christmas day. It would be nice if our Solicitors could spend Christmas with their families. If you are planning a major bank heist, could you wait until after Christmas before you get caught? We are accredited by The Law Society for Criminal Defence with Higher Courts Solicitor Advocate Chris Evans at the helm 2. Don't have Christmas Family Tiffs Christmas should be a time for family fellowship but sadly it also sees the occasional Eastenders style bust up and the Solicitors need to be called in. With accreditation by the Law Society for Family and Children Law and as Family Mediators Liz Hunt and Jon Hewitson are here if you you need them - but could you wait until after Christmas? 3. Don't Overdo the Festive Cheer Every year our probate dept are called out to assist in making arrangements because of a sudden bereavement. It is not much fun for Solicitor Rachel Hodges to register a death on Christmas Eve. Could you leave the extra Mince Pie until after Christmas?
A SOLICITOR IS NOT JUST FOR
CHRISTMAS
4. Don’t Drink and Drive or Speed We hope everyone takes care not to drink and drive and drive carefully within the speed limits, but people do make mistakes and need the services of our own Mr Loophole Chris Evans. Chris has saved a good many licences over the last 30 years but could you all be extra careful until after Christmas?
6. Do Make a new year’s resolution The New Year is a good time to put your affairs in order. Everyone, whatever their age, should have a will and powers of attorneys in place particularly if you have children, run a business or have a complicated family. Look out for our special Will and Power of Attorney package offers in the New Year.
5. Don't fall out with the neighbours Our Mediators are on hand for all boundary and neighbour disputes and what better time for these to erupt when everyone is home for the Christmas holiday? If you need him, Michael Morgan is a Solicitor Mediator accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
“We are accredited by the Law Society for Conveyancing Quality and have been helping people to move house since 1867.” 83
7. Do Make a new Start The New Year is often a time for people to go house hunting. WORKING O N WORK FIVE STARTING POINTS FROM
LEWIS BALLARD We all want to be better, even those on top of their game should aim to improve. Dan le Sac tells us, ‘If your only goal is always to improve on yourself, then the quest is never over no matter how big your wealth.’ This is true of business too! If you’re not working on bettering your business it isn’t going to improve.
We know you’re working hard, but are you working right? Make time to work on work. Doing daily tasks is important, but it won’t make your business improve. Getting better at doing your daily tasks only gets you better at staying where you are!
1. Change You have to make changes to see changes. Setting a target to be bringing in more high value clients is great, but if you stick to the same process you’ve been following, day-in day-out, you’re going to get exactly the same results you’ve been getting, day-in day-out. A great way to identify where you should be changing your tactics is to ask people who are already doing what you want to do. The worst they can do is not tell you!
2. Commit Change can be hard to enforce, but it can be the most important part. Frequently processes put in place to bring change fall by the wayside. People revert to what they know, but that only keeps everything the same. Nothing can progress if nothing changes. Let’s say your goal is to drive up garlic bread sales and you’ve told everyone to offer it every time.
If you don’t monitor it, things will quickly revert to the previous statusquo. Want to get stuck with a load of garlic bread, or increased sales? Make those changes stick!
3. Goals What are you aiming for? Bettering yourself is great, but you need more specific goals. To become ‘better’ is too broad. What’s the best route to ‘better’? If you decide to get better at workflow management you need to identify how much and by when. Before you know it, you won’t just be working towards ‘better’, you’ll know how much better you really are.
4. Time Want more time? Unfortunately, you can’t have it! There is no more to go around. Instead use what you have more wisely. Is it really only you who can do those routine daily tasks? Is that just vanity? Because to improve your business, you need to prioritise working on work, not just in it.
“You have to make changes to see changes.” 84
5. ‘Better’ So you’ve achieved your goal and now you’re ‘better’. You’ve reached good or even great, but don’t stop there. Super successful companies are always improving, which is why we see new innovation daily from the businesses we want to compete with and, eventually, exceed. They’re working on work right now. Are you? Give us a call and let Lewis Ballard help you identify what your goals should be, and how you can be working on work today.
“So you’ve achieved your goal and now you’re ‘better’. You’ve reached good or even great, but don’t stop there.”

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.
STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.
VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W
One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.
The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.
THE LIGHT
FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.
Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.
What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.
“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”
Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.
What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

Many will have read the headlines in the recent press of the plight of Mrs Tini Owens aged 68 who lost her Supreme Court fight to divorce her husband. This case was an example of a Respondent Husband who successfully defended the grant of the Decree.
MELANIE L AZARUS The case has sparked the debate about the reform of Divorce Laws in the UK which lag behind other countries. There is now growing support for the introduction of the “No Fault” Divorce. In this case, Mrs Owen had filed for Divorce on the fact of her husband’s “behaviour” after 40 years of marriage. In line with Law Society Family Law Protocol, Mrs Owen’s solicitor had drafted a mild petition based on her husband’s conduct. He had earlier refused to Divorce her on her “adultery” and had refused a Divorce on the fact of a two years’ separation. Mrs Owens had to show that her husband had behaved in such a way that she could not reasonably be expected to live with him. This is generally a combination of a subjective and objective test. What is unreasonable to one person might not be considered unreasonable by another but a Judge considering those reasons has to form the conclusion that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Unusually, she cited reasons which had largely taken place after the parties had separated and not those which had arisen during what was a long marriage of 40 years. Mr Owens, however, refused to agree to the divorce on his behaviour. The original Trial Judge and then the Court of Appeal ruled that she had not met the threshold for the divorce to proceed. Sadly, her reasons were found to be flimsy and exaggerated and her appeal to the highest Court, the Supreme Court was rejected resulting in her having to wait until 2020 to Divorce her husband after 5 years of separation. This case is unusual and not typical. Defending Divorce Petitions is rare in the UK. In 2016, 114,000 petitions for divorce were filed and only 800 answers lodged. In fact, only 17 Divorce Petitions in that year proceeded to a final contested hearing.
However, this case highlighted and has resulted in mounting call for reform of the system and rightly so, as citing blame in a Divorce only exacerbates the problems and conflicts inherent in what is already a difficult and stressful process. What geographical area does the business cover? The UK. I have travelled to Blackburn, Edinburgh, Ruthin, and Taunton in the last month, training comms teams for large corporate organisations. I also teach workshops in South Wales for individuals and small businesses. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime? I like watching YouTube documentaries, running along the beautiful coastline and going to comedy clubs and the theatre. Where do you like to eat out? I love the Captains Wife in Sully and Mo’s Indian in Penarth and Toby Carvery in Rhoose. What three words describe you? Courageous, Confident, Creative.
We really love learning about people who live in the Vale. Anna Brees shares her story with us.
THE L AST WORD How long have you lived in the Vale? I have lived here for 8 years. What do you enjoy most about living where you live? I have lived in the Channel Islands (and Guernsey) Gloucestershire, Birmingham, Oxford, and the New Forest and I have to say this area is my favourite. For the beaches, coastline, shopping, events – comedy clubs, theatre, concerts, parks, and the affordable cost of living. This area on balance has it all! And only two hours on the train to London. What do you do for a living? I had a successful career as broadcast journalist for the BBC and ITV for 11 years, then I moved to South Wales (had children) and recently launched my company Brees Media, passing on professional broadcasting skills to others as we are all now producing and publishing video online. An opportunity arose for me to return to the BBC, but I felt my calling was to empower citizen and community journalists who are already doing sterling work on social along with corporate communications and marketing teams.
What services do the company offer? I teach people how to film, edit and present using their mobile phones – but more importantly how to find the best video vehicle for your message. For example, square and portrait works better on the newsfeed, landscape on YouTube and Vimeo. I also talk about the power of geomarketing using Facebook advertising.
What do you enjoy about what you do? The look on people’s faces following a workshop, it feels like I have just taught them how to write, or speak or sing! It is incredibly rewarding. It is a skill that I feel duty bound to share as a truth seeking journalist, empowering all voices and opinions and I love doing it.
“All I am doing is upskilling those who want to get their message out in a more professional and engaging way via video.” 92
What drives you? It is an exceptionally exciting and transitional time in the media at the moment. All you have to do is follow the money – and in advertising you get more bang for your buck on social. It is taking over from the established media (print and terrestrial TV). All I am doing is upskilling those who want to get their message out in a more professional and engaging way via video. Be a broadcaster and a publisher is my message to everyone. What makes you laugh? I love Vic and Bob, the original Big Night Out and the new one recently launched on BBC 4. I can’t fault Peep Show and Alan Partridge too. I could watch them all day long. What motivates you? My Father. Every single second of the day. He was and still is the most selfless man I ever met and was never motivated by power or money, just compassion and that is what drives me. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Still in this area and helping everyone upskill and adapt to this new and very exciting media environment. Also helping communication and marketing professionals as well as traditional media outlets create channels that compete with terrestrial TV. Anna Brees offers a two day mobile video workshop from her training venue in Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, for more details please email hello@breesmedia.co.uk
