THE SOUTH WALES VALLEY ’S PREMIER LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Valleys Life Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW www.valleyslife.com
W ELCOME At this time of year, most of us are buying gifts for loved ones and looking, instinctively, for a bargain so we tend to look towards the large supermarkets, national chains or on the web to find the things we want. But what if, this winter (and into 2015) we made a change? What if we decided to spend our money locally?
0845 180 2345 Passionate about The Valleys We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Valleys Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Wales for the people of Wales. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Valleys Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Valleys Life or on www.valleyslife.com (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Valleys Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright Valleys Life 2014. All rights reserved. Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to Valleys Life. Visit www.valleyslife.com for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Valleys Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across The Valleys and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.
Of course there are some things you can’t get locally. I accept that, but there’s a lot we can source closer to home: our meat from a local butcher, our fruit and vegetables from our local greengrocer, and gifts from local shops - it can be done if we make the effort and it really is worth doing. Shopping locally creates jobs locally and while you can often buy products at more affordable prices perhaps online, by investing your hard earned cash locally, you are helping to retain your local community’s distinctiveness. For example, if we all bought our Christmas cards from local shops this year, that would inject several million pounds alone into the local economy of south Wales. Local shops really can save us money. Don’t be influenced by the enormous advertising budgets of the huge supermarkets and national chains. We shop around a lot and I find I get excellent fruit and veg from local independent shops cheaper than large supermarkets. Yes it’s easy to jump into the car and head off
to the superstore, especially on a wet, wintery day, but isn’t it better to buy your meat, fish and veg fresh from your local shop? I love the fact they know me by name and I’m greeted with a big smile and a heart-warming welcome. Tell us about your great local businesses… In this cool, winter issue of Valleys Life, you’ll discover many local businesses who deserve and value your custom. Remember, small business owners are just like you and I - ordinary people just trying to make a living. We all have our favourites but we’d love you to share yours on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/valleyslife and you can tweet to us @ValleysLife - we’d love to hear your views. We hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year and we’ll see you again in 2015. I hope it will be a prosperous and peaceful one for all our readers. There’s something especially valuable about shrubs that flower and produce berries in winter’s short and often dreary days. Seeing these delightful and resilient plants taking frost, rain and snow in their stride lifts our spirits. Many of them are fragrant and can be used indoors for Christmas decorations.
GROW YOUR OWN FOR CHRISTMAS
If you haven’t got the plants that you want for this Christmas in the garden then grow it for next Christmas. Not vegetables or apples and pears but trees and shrubs that produce their very own Christmas decorations. The obvious one is holly and, even though it’s probably the best known and most traditional of Christmas shrubs, there’s a host of other stunning plants that produce fantastic vibrant berries. Cotoneaster, Mountain Ash, Pyracantha with its red and yellow berries, Rosehips and the one that gets everyone talking Callicarpa, with its bright purple berries. As well as growing these fabulous plants to provide your own Christmas decorations, when they are covered in frost and snow the garden show gets even more spectacular. Of course if you leave them to provide their own firework display in the garden it’s the wildlife that reaps the benefit. Visiting birds like Redwings and Fieldfares will queue up alongside our resident birds like Blackbird and Thrushes to feast themselves to capacity. ADAPTIVE VEHICLE SOLUTIONS Adaptive Vehicle Solutions are a family run vehicle sourcing company based in Llanishen, Cardiff. We primarily supply company directors, CEO’s of companies and time starved individuals. Our main forte, the prestigious market, with such marques as Range Rover, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Mercedes, Audi to name a few. Further to the previous, we can also supply fleet and commercial vehicles including Ford, Citroen, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen. Full dealership facilities are available with competitive finance packages for all clients. Part exchange underwriting is available alongside local and nationwide delivery options too. Richard Blakeney, the Company Director, captured a niche audience and client base, who didn’t have the time or inclination to find a vehicle for themselves. Wasting countless hours in showrooms, needlessly trawling the Internet and making zero headway. Since February 2005, Richard and AVS have experienced the high and low points of the economy with significant growth and overcoming the economic downturn in 2008.
Priding ourselves on being able to adapt to your vehicle requirements, no matter the desire. We offer a friendly, more efficient and personal service than your local dealership, without the hassle of spending a whole day in a showroom. Although obtaining stock items for immediate delivery, sometimes it just isn’t enough, the wrong colour, too old, too new. If you simply just do not have the time to be visiting every dealer under the sun or waiting 16 weeks for a factory order, we can help. Benefiting from extensive contacts within the motor-trade 9
and the combined knowledge of over 40 years, we can “find the right gear for you”. In the winter months there can be nothing nicer, or cosier, than spending time with friends and loved ones at a real country pub and when I say real, it has to have a real log fire. One of our firm favourites is the Gwaelod, in Gwaelod-y-Garth near Taffs Well.
GWAELOD INN
The Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn (or just the Gwaelod as the locals call it) is one of south Wales’ premier country inns just a few miles outside Cardiff. I can say this with confidence because, although we’re not locals, we have visited this great pub many times.
“ So if you’re looking for a wonderful place to experience real pub food and artmosphere this winter, the Gwaelod needs to be on your SatNav, unless you’re fortunate enough to live in Gwaelod-y-Garth.”
So what makes the Gwaelod so good. Well, if you’re a beer drinker you’ll be spoiled for choice and, depending on your taste, they’re all pretty good especially the selection of real ales. The well-stocked bar has won numerous awards from Camra (Campaign For Real Ale). Since Richie and Barbara took over the premises, it has re-established its rightful place at the heart of the Gwaelod-y-Garth community. The pub now also has an on-site brewery - Violet Cottage Brewery or ‘The Brew with a View’ and is brewing a selection of beers which are proving extremely popular not only with regulars, but also with those who consistently take time out to drive from further afield. 16
The interior of the pub is exactly what you’d hope for: rustic and convivial and, from the minute you walk through the door, you know you’re in a proper welcoming Welsh country pub - the wood floors, the tables, the log fire, the staff (yes the staff, they’re really friendly), everything colludes to make your visit a little bit special. While the Gwaelod hits the right notes with its bar, we can’t ignore the food. The quality of the offering here is excellent and it’s real home-cooked fayre. We’ve eaten here many times and whether it’s a pub lunch or evening meal, the team at the Gwaelod never fails to deliver. The upstairs restaurant seats up to sixty diners and, if you fancy something a little more private,
“ from the minute you walk through the door, you know you’re in a proper welcoming Welsh country pub - the wood floors, the tables, the log fire, the staff (yes the staff, they’re really friendly), everything colludes to make your visit a little bit special.”
they can accommodate you in a private dining area which seats up to twenty. We regularly eat in the bar and it’s wonderful too. If you have only one meal at the Gwaelod, it has to be Sunday lunch - it really is to die for. Christmas and New Year is a special time at the Gwaelod too and, if you’re lucky you might be able to get a table. Having said that, the food here is so good you really do have to book to guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

In 1949 one man took a make-or-break chance to pursue his dream, with no idea whether it would come true or whether it would drastically fail. Now, after 65 years and three generations, that dream is still going strong. Run by the original owner’s grandson, Jon Page, Page’s Fish and Chips is going from strength to strength.
PAGE’S FISH & CHIPS “Once people have been to us and tasted the product that we serve versus what you might get in one of the restaurant chains, there is such a big difference. For example, we don’t buyin a frozen chip product - we chip our potatoes on site.”
“We buy in our fish by the stone then cut and prepare it on site, and we have quite an extensive range of fish that we sell. For instance, we sell monkfish, griddled tuna, swordfish, seabass, hake and plaice on the menu so we are trying to offer more than your traditional cod and chips. Of course, cod is still as popular as ever and we do serve an exceptional cod and chips, but we like to offer our customers that choice.” 65 years ago the grandfather of Jon Page, Page’s current owner, took a risk that could have left him homeless, all for that chance of realising a dream. In exchange for his home Jon’s grandfather took over a small fish bar in Sebastopol. Beforehand the business was not flourishing, making the risk seem foolish. However the passion and enthusiasm that the new owner had for the little shop quickly turned things around. With a sense of love and pride at finally being able to achieve something he had dreamed about, the business quickly became profitable and captured the hearts (and stomachs) of the local neighbourhood. The business was passed down and, three generations later, is still providing delicious food to all that enter. Jon’s dream, when taking over Page’s, was equally as ambitious so when a new site became available in nearby Cwmbran he converted the building into a takeaway and restaurant. Page’s already held a standing for its high quality and great fish and chips but after 62 years of being just a takeaway, Page’s Fish and Chip Restaurant & Takeaway in Cwmbran town centre officially opened, a fully licensed restaurant open six days a week that can seat up to 120 people across two floors.
Since then Page’s has been shortlisted for the ‘Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year’ at the National Fish & Chip Awards and was one of the final three for the Seafish UK Independent Fish & Chip Restaurant 2014. Both Jon and Page’s Manager, Jennifer Davies, are thrilled with the success of the restaurant but they aren’t surprised given the reputation of the Page name. “The restaurant has really become popular with local people. We get a lot of daytime trade where we seat diners in our ground floor dining room, while our upstairs facility, which can cater for around 100 people and has the bar, is used mainly in the evenings. We’re often catering for very large parties, most of whom book out the entire top floor, we’ve run charity events, quiz nights and local networking events. The new restaurant is starting to build an enviable reputation with people saying this is a great place to eat. We benefit from our experience – the quality comes from years in the fish and chip shop industry, but cost is a great concern nowadays. For £10, you can come to us, have a drink and a freshly prepared meal; that is quite unusual in this day and age.” However, competition is fierce with the rise of pub food, yet Jennifer knows there’s no comparison. 24
Page’s also benefits from the expertise of its Cardiff-based fishmonger Snowden & Co which will update the restaurant on the fresh fish and seafood it has available each morning. Recent favourites that have ended up on the menu recently include sea bass, whitebait, tuna and swordfish. So the next time you fancy Fish and Chips, there is really only one place that you should go to.

There’s a definite change in the air in Merthyr Tydfil nowadays. The rough old, tough old town, famous throughout the world for its iron works and boxers is quickly developing into a hot bed of creativity in every way, shape and form. Anthony Bunko finds out more...
WE’RE SO PRETTY Leading the charge is a gang of disaffected teenagers with fire in their heart and anger in their soul. Pretty Vicious are not just another young Indie band with ambition to breathe much needed life back into the British music scene. To many people in the know, they are already the band… the saviours of the new blank generation.
Like many up-and-coming bands, the four lifelong friends (Brad Griffiths, 17, vocals and guitar; Elliot Jones, 16, drums; Thom McCarthy, 17, guitar; and Jarvis Morgan, 17, bass) got together to escape the ‘drudgery and boredom’ of small town life and channel their creativity into something positive. “Everything you hear in the songs is the truth about what me and my mates get up to on the weekend.” Brad told us. “The Cave is about knocking about on street corners when there’s nothing to do, and having to find your own fun.”
“Oh, we’re tired and we’re bored We’ve waited by the shops for like an hour Just to get some cans of bow”
‘We, are children of the streets Don’t listen to a word about tomorrow Cus’ the world is at our feet! It’s mad, but try and just relax Smoke another fag and ease your sorrows Cos’ you lads are all I need! Singing! Drinking in the caves! Alright! Singing! Drinking in the caves! All night! Ahhh! Extract from The Cave, Pretty Vicious (copyright PV 2015)
“ They are already being tipped for greatness by every man and his dog.” 32
While many of their friends are quite happy to continue following this route, the boys decided to get together and form the band. “I always wanted to do something. I always had a passion and wanted to follow that because we’ve got a chance now. We don’t want to let this slip away. It’s nice to finally see something come of it.”
And something is definitely coming. Within 24 hours of posting their fabulously catchy and ‘in your face’ song, The Cave, on Facebook, the buzz got so great that they had every major record label, high profile managers and top of the range clothing companies wanting to hear more. Even though they haven’t played a gig yet, they have practiced non-stop for over six months. And something’s working because they are already being tipped for greatness by every man and his dog including the likes of Zane Lowe, BBC radio, and Graham Rowntree of Blur fame.
VICIOUS “It was quite surreal when Adam Walton played the song twice on BBC Radio Wales and I love Blur, so hearing Dave Rowntree play the track was incredible,” said front man Brad. “Then we had the Radio 1 play on Zane Lowe’s show, which then triggered the interest of record companies. From there it’s just snowballed and got bigger and bigger. Every day I wonder what is going to happen next.”
As we head to press, they have a huge showcase gig planned at The Red House in Merthyr on Saturday, December 13, in front of all the main faces in the music industry, followed the night after with one for fans and friends. “We wanted of the record companies to come to our town,” said Brad. ‘I love Merthyr because out of nothing comes something that is beautiful.” If the hype is to be believed, they will be signed by Xmas.
Just like the many thousands of other bands, musicians and music fans in the UK , Pretty Vicious are, unsurprisingly, disillusioned with the current X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent manipulated music scene. To counter this they have set about creating a refreshingly honest, powerful and energetic sound that will see them become not just a major force within Wales or even the UK, but throughout the world…
Watch out Simon Cowell… there may be a revolution about to take place.
Jeffries Fine Jewellers was created by Colin Jeffries over 20 years ago. After having taken over the business from Richard Tracey, Colin has worked tirelessly since then in order to make it the success that it is today. With a premises that opened in Cwmbran two years ago Jeffries Fine Jewellers continues to this day to grow in line with their customers’ demand.
JEFFRIES
What sort of products does Jeffries Fine Jewellery sell? We sell an incredibly vast range of silver and gold items, with some well known and hugely popular brands such as Pandora, of which we are currently stocking the full collection of ‘Pandora Moments’, as well as Clogau Gold, Fiorelli, Ti Sento and, just in time for Christmas, Links of London.
Unlike most other shops we are one of the rare jewellers that sell superb value secondhand items, often rare and interesting things that are no longer readily available, yet just as sought after.
Our collection of Engagement and Wedding Rings is equally as stunning and, if none of what we stock takes your fancy, we can create a ring just for you if you would like something specific.
There is no limit to the value of the rings that we can provide. We are holding diamond rings over 2 carats in weight at extremely affordable prices right now. On top of all that we also sell a wide range of watches, with Skagen and Citizen watches being our most popular and leading watch brands.
Is it just that impressive collection of jewellery that you provide? On top of all of our jewellery we also deal with all sorts of repairs and sizing matters, this includes watch alterations, together with our valuations and probate services. As mentioned before we also custom make rings for customers that would like something a little more unique. For example if a customer liked an eternity band but wanted a mix of Emerald and Diamond stones rather than exclusively Diamond, we could make it. All rings that are purchased through us can be cleaned and polished free of charge for life at our Newport branch and we can often get selected items into the shop for the customer’s approval before purchase, such as match pearl necklaces to earrings to ensure colour is identical to the customer own item. What sets you apart from other jewellers, why is it that your customers come to you again and again? Firstly we work as a team and take great pride in our roles. Everyone that works here has a lengthy customer service experience and a vast knowledge of the field, this means that we are able to provide outstanding customer service to everyone that walks through our door. Customers are treated like one of the family, even after any transactions have taken place. Our aim is for the overall cycle of service to be memorable and lasting and we do not settle for second best. Product wise all of our stock is extremely good value for money. Our wedding rings are probably the most affordable in the area and our Clogau Gold is exceptional value for money.
34
Wherever possible we will endeavour to keep our unbeatable prices without compromising the high quality that our customers have come to know from us. Also all of our diamonds and coloured gems are hand selected by Colin and our two resident gemologists. They will study hundreds of diamonds before selecting the best quality possible. Some rings can take years to put together, making sure that the quality is superb, unlike the mass produced stock of some of our competitors.
Our supplied items are exclusive to Jeffries but this does not mean there is only a small selection to choose from, Jeffries often provides items exceeding tens of thousands. We provide traditional hand written valuations with our more expensive items and are continually evolving, always aiming to provide something different so that our customers keep returning to find new and surprising things to see.
Finally what are your plans for the future? We want to expand and grow. We already have big and exciting plans in place for next year. We are always thinking ahead, always moving with the times. Our goal is to be the best in Wales.

The idea behind Barinis was developed in 2009 by the present owners Adrian and Geraldine, who wanted to create a unique, stylish bar and restaurant complex that would compliment their love and passion for antiques, architectural fittings and interior design.
BARINIS
There idea was soon achieved with the opening of Barinis Lounge Bar and Grill in October of the same year. Shortly after opening it was quickly adopted and embraced by the local community, students and professional people as it was seen as the place where they could eat, drink and relax among the magnificent architectural antiques and leather sofas incorporated into this unique open plan bar and restaurant. Within the bar and restaurant there is a large range of continental beers, fine wines, real ales and ciders to buy that perfectly compliment the food menus that consist of steaks, fish, chicken & pastas. There is also a daily special steak deal where you can get two 10oz Sirloin steaks and a bottle of chardonnay, merlot or rose wine for only £30.
The unique layout of the bars and restaurant spreads everything out over two open plan floors and fully incorporates all reclaimed timbers and fittings. Everything fitting has providence; from the Victorian Gothic Marble fireplace from Winston Churchill’s birth home, the huge Georgian Gilded Over mantle Mirror from a vicarage in Llandeilo, the Pitch Pine Flooring from Tidworth Military Barracks, the toilet doors and frames from the County Lunatic Asylum in Bodmin and the enamel light shades on the upper level, that once graced the platforms of London’s famous tube stations in World War Two, to the oak bars which were fashioned from vergers stalls and choir stalls and rescued from a 1820’s Church in Sandwich Kent to 36
the biggest mirrored back bar that takes your breath away as you stand and gaze at its magnificence, being over 30ft in height. Open throughout the day and into the evenings, the restaurant bar & grill is the perfect destination to enjoy a cocktail, lunch, dinner or private party. Over the course of December, on Friday and Saturday Nights, a resident DJ plays an eclectic array of music the provides a perfect accompaniment to a great evening out, especially as Barinis can accommodate parties up to 120 - 280 people. They are all about classic and inspired cooking serving only the very best food, created from the freshest ingredients and sourced only from local suppliers,

a fact that Barinis is incredibly proud of. They also pride themselves on the philosophy of ingredient provenance and are dedicated to ensuring that every time you visit us you will have both fantastic food and service. A place that is a comfortable and relaxing, a chill out area in the week that comes to life on the weekend with plans to install a new lighting and sound system with DJ area that will overlook the bar from the parapet. One day in 1965 John Hughes created a small clay figurine in the shed at the bottom of his garden, having no idea of just how monumental that moment was. Now, on the eve of their 50th year in business, ‘The Grogg Shop’ empire has expanded and provides their unique collection of creations to people all across the world.
WORLD OF
GROGGS We spoke to Carly about her grandfather’s legacy.
Can you tell me how The Grogg Shop came to be? Everything started in 1965 in a shed at the bottom of the garden on Llantwit Road, where my grandfather started to make clay figurines of clowns, mythical creatures and other such things. It was more of a hobby at first, he had tried ‘normal’ jobs, put his hand to many different roles, even going into the R.A.F but he never really enjoyed any of them, then one day he decided to see if he could take his hobby a little further.
In 1971 he moved his work from the shed to the old Danygraig Pub on Broadway and we have been here ever since. The entire family work here now but it is my uncle Richard who creates the Groggs. He was a small child when my grandfather taught him how to use clay and he has grown up making them, perfecting his skill with years of creations. He absolutely loves making the faces, so much so that he took over doing them when he was just 17. 2015 will be our 50th year and we could not be more proud of how far my grandfather’s legacy has come.
What is the Grogg creation process? Richard starts with the Master Figure using a stoneware clay working from photographs. Depending on the size of the piece it can take anywhere from two to six months before the Master Figure is completed. Once completed it is fired in the kiln at 1000 degrees then it is sent to our production team in Maesteg. The team create a mould, cast it and then our highly skilled painters meticulously hand paint every single new Grogg to ensure the highest quality. So after 50 years Groggs are still designed, created and made in Wales.
“You can see how the art of creating a Grogg has evolved over the years into what we produce today.”
“Thanks to the website we are regularly sending Groggs to people all around the world.”
Is it just the sporting figures that you create? Is it just Groggs that you sell? Not at all. Aside from our most popular sporting Groggs we also make famous singers and actors from throughout the years. We have a huge range of Sheep and Dragons, then we also have our Graduation, Wedding and Mining collections all of which customers can have personalised with their own inscription for just £5 extra. As well as the Groggs we also have a gift shop selling various items from local sellers. Including chocolate, cake mix, candles, love spoons, cufflinks, cards, tea towels and mugs. How can we buy a Grogg? Our customers can pop into the shop at any time and have a look at what we have in stock or, if they are from further afield, then we take phone orders as well as having the full list of what we produce on our website. Thanks to the website we are regularly sending Groggs to people all around the world. 43
For those who can come to the shop we also have a museum chronicling the evolution of the Groggs. Housed in the original production room the museum has some of my grandfathers, and Richard’s, earliest work where you can see how the art of creating a Grogg has evolved over the years into what we produce today.

Close your eyes, and imagine Edna Mode, the avant-garde fashion designer and super suits seamstress in Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles saying, “Patio doors are so last season darling!” And she’d be right, because the only doors any self-respecting conservatory or orangery designer is going to be using these days are bi-folds. “What’s so great about bi-folds?” I hear you ask, and, if you have to ask, please leave the room now, you clearly have no taste. Quite simply a set of bi-fold doors can change your life. How do I know this? Because I have been converted. The first thing I love about bi-folds is the increase in light. Closed or open they increase light into a room significantly. In summer, the effect created by opening the doors completely is truly stunning. If you’re lucky enough to have a decent garden, it will be like having a twenty foot plasma television and watching the world’s best nature programme. The relationship created between the outside and inside is life changing (and I’m really not exaggerating). In winter, the significant increase in light is most welcome. I do suffer a little with SAD Syndrome in winter months, and the increase in ambient light has had a noticeably positive effect on my mood. The next thing to consider is material. If you’re even thinking about mentioning uPVC, don’t. The material of choice here is aluminium which has two excellent properties: it’s light and it’s strong (remember you’re going to have to slide those lovely doors open and you don’t want to be breaking in to an unattractive sweat while showing off.) The other great thing about aluminium is that it can be coloured. If you’re Katie Price, you might choose pink but, by far, the most popular colours are white, charcoal and black.
The next question is who do you entrust with the project? There are plenty of companies out there in South Wales but you’ll want to speak to someone who actually manufactures bi-fold doors. Alexander James, a family owned Welsh company, have been designing, manufacturing and installing bi-fold doors for over ten years. The company has many satisfied customers across south Wales and along the M4 corridor (they also do a lot of work in London). Andy Farmer lives in Barry and is Sales Director at Alexander James. He prides himself on being an expert on bi-folds. “We manufacture all our bi-fold frames and doors in-house. We only use higrade aluminium and all our frames and doors come with a guarantee,” he says, “The technology has moved forward in recent years. Doors are stronger, lighter and the colour palette available is almost unlimited. You can have tinted glass and even blinds set within the double glazing. It’s a revolutionary product.” Cost is always a factor in any home improvement but Andy is confident that Alexander James are extremely competitive. “Yes price is important,” Andy says, “but you have to ensure that corners aren’t cut when it comes to security and safety. We’re confident our bi-fold doors are competitively priced but we won’t compromise on quality of materials or any part of the manufacturing process. We value our reputation more.” So if your patio doors are a little tired and you’d like to let a little more light into your life, perhaps reading this will be an eye-opener. I can, with all honesty, say that installing bi-fold doors has changed my life. And, as Edna from The Incredibles might say, “It will be bold. Dramatic! Heroic!”
“ In summer, the effect created by opening the doors completely is truly stunning.” 44

Optometrists, Davies and Jones, pride themselves on investing in the very latest technology to ensure patients receive the most up-to-date care. We visit their Treorchy practice and talk with Andrew Hobby, Practice Manager, about the benefits offered by their High Definition Laser Scanner.
LIFE IN HD What is HD OCT? It is a High Definition Laser Scanner that checks the health of various parts of the eye. The results are almost instantaneous. You will be able to view them yourself on the screen whilst the Optometrist explains their significance. They will then be stored in the computers memory for comparison with future scans. Does it hurt? Absolutely not, it is completely painless. There are no drops and nothing will touch your eye. The scan only takes a few seconds. Why is it necessary? It allows us to check more thoroughly for many eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Macula Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy (the three most common causes of blindness in the UK). Disease is found easier and earlier, therefore treatment can start sooner and has more chance of success. Don’t other checks like the ‘puffer test’ screen for Glaucoma? Yes, however it is possible to have a good reading on things like the ‘puffer test’ and still have Glaucoma. The scanner can detect disease even before you may become aware of any change and up to five years sooner than some other tests.
I attend the Diabetic Screening Service. Do I still need a scan? We strongly recommend all Diabetic patients attend the Screening Service. There is some similarity between our scanner and the photographs taken in the clinic. However, the scanner provides other information which cannot be obtained from photographs alone. The two services complement each other.
Why isn’t the Scan included in the cost of the regular sight test? Because the instrument provides technology way beyond that required for a standard sight test. All of our Optometrists want to provide the best eye examination that they can. This machine allows us to do that. The NHS does not pay for our equipment.
“I have had distorted vision on and off in my right eye for years. Despite several sight test, none of the Optometrists could find anything wrong. However the scanner found the problem in seconds. It was great to see what was going on at the back of my eye at last and even better to know it was nothing to worry about.” Patient AJ
“I am very pleased I had the scans done. It detected I was at risk of Narrow Angle Glaucoma. As a result I was urgently referred to the Hospital and have had Laser treatment to make sure I won’t get Glaucoma. I’m happy I had treatment before the disease struck and affected my sight.” Patient MM
My eyes are fine, why should I bother with a Scan? Because the scanner can detect disease before it affects your sight, therefore we can find out if there is a problem before you know you have one. What if I don’t want, or am unable to pay for a scan? You will still receive a comprehensive sight test in the usual way. This will be at no cost to those entitled to a NHS check or at our normal fee for those who pay. If the Optometrist suspects there is eye disease, you’ll be referred to the Eye Clinic in the hospital as usual. However, if you purchase a scan then that would allow us to manage any potential problems more effectively. For example, it may prevent unnecessary visits to the hospital or in some cases mean a quicker referral for urgent treatment. Also we can monitor conditions that are not an issue at the moment but may become a problem in the future.

Ever since Cinema began almost one hundred and twenty five years ago, back in the 1890’s, people have flocked to the big screens to marvel at the wonders that a trip to the cinema can offer. From small independent labours of love to billion pound franchises, cinemas have it all. However in the last couple of decades the price of tickets has skyrocketed, making the leisurely activity of seeing a newly released movie an expensive ordeal. Picturedrome Cinemas aims to stop this increase and return us to the golden age of cinema.
THE PICTUREDROME
Picturedrome Cinemas are a small business that is rapidly growing with each passing day. Originating in Bognor Regis The company soon expanded its reach to other towns and cities including Clacton, Westgate, Dorchester and, most recently in August of 2014, Blackwood. The site harks back to the golden age of cinema, it shies away from the mass produced, warehouse like multiplex cinemas, that have sprouted up throughout the country like unwanted weeds, and instead focuses its efforts on the more traditional high street cinema’s that seemed to have disappeared almost completely somewhere during the mid 90’s.
The Theatre is almost unique in todays society as its main ethos is to discover old, run down, possibly abandoned cinemas and rejuvenate them. So rather than knocking the old cinema down and replacing it with a mass produced replica of one of the more well known chains, The Theatre returns the life to the building by mixing the traditional cinema with the modern technology that we have come to admire and expect from our cinemas. This is exactly what happened when Picturedrome Cinemas set its sights on the Maxime Cinema of Blackwood.
“ The site harks back to the golden age of cinema.” 52
Andrew Millar, the General Manager of the Maxime Cinema in Blackwood commented that “we [at the Maxime] aim to make coming to the cinema an experience once again” also mentioning that another of their aims “is to make visiting the cinema affordable” and that is exactly what they have accomplished. The family run business offers tickets during the week at an almost unbelievably minuscule £2.50 a ticket with weekend prices reaching the maximum of £3.50. This includes all 3D film releases, meaning that there is no extra cost for you and your family to enjoy the most up to date films using the most up to date film technology. What Picturedrome Cinemas has allowed is for a family of four to enjoy a mid week trip to the cinema for an
“ The family run business offers tickets during the week at an almost unbelievably minuscule £2.50 a ticket with weekend prices reaching the maximum of £3.50.” astonishing £10 rather than the £40 plus they would have had to spend at one of the well known, mass produced competitors. So you can treat yourself to some popcorn and sweets guilt free in the knowledge that you are saving a lot of money. When you visit the Maxime you will also be spoilt for choice in terms of what you can see as this is not a small cinema with only one or two screens, the Maxime has a total of five digital cinema screens spread out across two floors, all with the latest Dolby Digital Surround Sound, and it is not just films that are available to watch, the cinema offers a superb programme of live productions from the Royal Opera House, National Theatre and Royal Ballet.
All this in addition to the exclusive first floor fully licensed bar that serves a selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Arriving at the Maxime in Blackwood you’ll wonder why you ever agreed to spend such an exuberant amount of money elsewhere on something that can be provided to you at a fraction of the cost with a lot more warmth and love for the medium of film.

enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.
Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Our Creative Director has over 30 years of experience working at some of the world’s best design and advertising agencies. We know what we’re doing. We’re no mugs.
be a lot more work involved when developing an eCommerce website but the companies who we have worked with so far have had fresh ideas about how to market their products and that’s really satisfying. Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.
Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.
What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.
Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to
Are you busy? What kinds of businesses are you working with? Cog started properly at the beginning of this year and we’re getting busier. We’re always looking to take on exciting new projects and really 55
Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

The Brogue Trader is expanding. In less than a year, the shop in Cardiff’s beautiful Morgan Arcade has grown an enviable reputation for great customer service thanks to the dedication of father and son team Chris and Keiron Macnamara who live in Pontyclun.
BIG SHOES TO With Chris expanding The Brogue Trader’s operations in Bath and Chester, the responsibility for dayto-day running of the Cardiff shop rests firmly on the shoulders of 20 year old Keiron. They might be big shoes to fill but Keiron relishes the challenge. We popped in for a coffee and a catch-up. Why shoes? I didn’t choose shoes, the shoes chose me! What do you love about The Brogue Trader? The days my father isn’t in! Seriously, I like the variety of customers we have in - all types of people;
from local celebrities to just some great characters. Our clients are fantastic, and seem to really enjoy shopping with us and that makes it even better to work here. What skills do you think you bring to the business? I’m half the age of my father so I bring a different dynamic to the business. I have a different perspective on things and that seems to work really well for both of us. I’m very operational and love just being in the shop dealing with clients and helping them with their footwear requirements. 56
What do you enjoy most about your work? It’s not work because I love what I’m doing. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true! Working here is very different from working in regular high street retail - The Brogue Trader is very, very social and clients just drop by for a chat and a catch-up, it really makes the days fly by.

What shoes are you wearing? I’m wearing the Loake 1880 Buckingham in mahogany - one of our best sellers. They look great with a suit or just jeans as I’m wearing today. Who inspires you? Arnold Schwarzenegger - a simple guy who loved training and became one of the best in the world at his sport and, at the same time, built a career and his property empire and then went on to movies and politics. I’m inspired by his hunger for new challenges and never selling himself short. I believe that to succeed, you have to be determined and mentally as well as physically strong - that’s why keeping fit and healthy is so important to me.
“It’s not work because I love what I’m doing. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true!” What are your future ambitions? Our goal, as a family, is to have more stores. After the incredible success of Cardiff, we have Bath and Chester coming on board in early 2015. There will be a lot of responsibility on me to manage the Cardiff store and keep it on track. However, longer term, I’d like to travel and have a family of my own. Who knows, in ten years we may have ten shops across the UK that would be amazing.

There’s more to photographer John Camilleri than meets the eye. We find out more.
THE L AST WORD Where do you live? I live in Rumney, which is on the outskirts east of Cardiff. Although it is a sprawling town in its own right, it is centred on the village of Rumney, which even has a pub, the Rompney Castle that is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.
What do you love about where you live? I love the eclectic mix of people and as I was brought up in Rumney, I have plenty of family and friends local to me, so I’m never short of willing volunteers to try out new photographic techniques. I also support my local parish church, St Augustine’s with the wonderful, supportive congregation. What makes John Camilleri Photography special? Wedding and Portrait photography is all about people. People forget things that they see or hear, but they never forget how you make them feel. I have an affable style that people have always warmed to, so for me it’s about creating an environment where people can quickly relax and enjoy themselves. Happy people make amazing photography so I ask people to leave their reality at home and bring their dreams into my camera. What is your background? I have had a wide and varied career that started with a short 24 year stint in the military, where I first discovered my passion for landscape photography as I travelled the world. I fell into wedding photography over 25 years ago by conducting wedding photography for colleagues and acquaintances, and I caught the buzz, thrill and excitement of being involved in people’s special moments.
I took a sabbatical from wedding photography 20 years ago, as I concentrated on my career and being a family man to three great kids, and now my three year old granddaughter, Maddison who is the apple of my eye. I decided to re-enter wedding photography in 2014 and have spent the year attending training courses and honing old and new skills, using the latest software and equipment, although the skill required in capturing a great image hasn’t changed at all. I have also been honoured to be asked to become a Trustee of a charity called The HEALS UK Foundation. HEALS stands for Help Empowerment and Local Support and I am committed to supporting them to empower people to live a full life, free from discrimination and injustice.
Where do your clients come from? My customer base is growing rapidly, coming from personal referrals and from people that have met me and liked my personality! Do your clients have their own ideas or do they leave it to you? A lot of my customers are extremely savvy and come to me with ideas and images that they have seen on social media, so we have a starting point to discuss improving on these. Social media is such a powerful asset to a photographer, which is why I have the usual Facebook and Twitter accounts, but also Instagram and Pinterest too. Look me up and add me! What do you think you bring to the profession? I am a perfectionist and strive to produce the best image every time I press the shutter and I am fully committed to providing an end to 58
end, amazing customer experience throughout a customer’s time with me. For me, taking a great image is only part of the story. Capturing the character, emotion and theatre of a special event, in the blink of an eye is such an honour. I respect that I have been invited to be a part of someone’s special day and I will be their personal photographer for life; offering preferential rates and discounts for their loyalty. What makes you happy? I guess I should say something about being happiest when I’m behind the camera and capturing amazing moments of amazing people. I am happy when I’ve got a camera in my hand, but if I’m honest, I’m at my happiest when I am out walking with my granddaughter and passing on life skills and values to her. Being a (youngish) grandfather has rocked my world and whether we are sat in church on a Sunday or splashing in puddles in the rain, I love every moment I spend with Maddison. What three things would you take to a desert island? Well I won’t need a camera as I look awful in selfies! But I would need a massive photo album so I can view all the amazing images I have of family, friends and special events that have been important throughout my life, my bake stone so I can make Welshcakes to remind me of home and a book called On the Wings of Eagles by Ken Follett, that I first read 26 years ago and that has helped shape who I am today. Describe yourself in three words … Fun, professional and diligent.

We print 10,000 copies of each edition and cut no corners on design, production and the quality of our print. Talking about printing, we source pretty much everything locally, and over 95% of Valleys Life’s turnover is reinvested back into the community of South Wales. If you have a business and are interested in promoting your goods or services to an aspirational audience in the Valleys then Valleys Life is almost certainly right for you.
