They say the best recommendation is word of mouth. Emma Pinchbeck of Barry to tells usAutumn why she issue loves of BLush, Barry her beauty treatments and why Welcome the Welsh Life, for Wales’ she wouldn’t go anywhere premier lifestyle magazine. Weelse. hope you like it. How often do you visit? Every couple of weeks to keep my lashes and brows fresh! My lashes last around 3 weeks and are the best I’ve ever had. I couldn’t live without them. It’s one less thing for me to think about each day as my lashes are perfect when I wake up. If I have a special occasion, I will go and have a tan or have my nails done, especially as I can’t have them done for work.

12 Who are you and what is your occupation? I’m Emma Pinchbeck. I’m 28 and a student midwife which is full time. I also have a one year old and a two year old, so it’s always fun and games in our house. I’m learning to be more organized and seem to be slowly getting there! Where do you live? I’ve lived in Barry for three years now and class it as home. I’m originally from up North but I love the area and it’s a great place for children to grow up. I attended the pre-launch night in May and have been visiting ever since. What treatments do you have there? My regular treatments are the BLush brows, a tint and wax which look amazing, eyelashes and Shellac. I have also had the Minx nails on my toes for my holidays. They last for weeks and I had lots of compliments. I have also had spray tans which are a fab colour. They have different shades depending on how dark you want your tan. I do also have a number of treatments which are on my wish list, including the body wrap which I have had once before by Zoe and it was truly revitalizing. I felt great afterwards, and also the ear candling is something I would like to have in the not too distant future!

88

20

Who is your therapist? Holly does my brows and eyelashes and Zoe does my Shellac. I always feel comfortable when I’m having treatments and both Holly and Zoe are really friendly. Holly’s trademark treatments have got to be eyelashes and eyebrows. People always comment on them when I have them done - she gets them spot on! What do you like about BLush? I always look forward to every appointment. The salon is also practically on my doorstep, which is a benefit too. Working shifts has its advantages but I don’t always know when I will be working so sometimes I call at short notice and, if they have space, they will fit me in. On occasions, Holly has come to my house after hours to do my eyelashes as I couldn’t come to the salon during day.

Describe the experience The therapists have a real passion for all things beauty and it shows in the treatments as they are always amazing. They spend time on attention to detail and are real perfectionists. They really understand the products they are using and are knowledgeable. The beauty rooms are relaxing and have a lovely atmosphere and the nail and reception area is chic, open and roomy, and it always smells lush! I’m confident I can ask for advice about products or treatments which I think is a really important factor, particularly for new clients or if it’s a new treatment or something you are worried or concerned about. Do you think it’s good value for money? BLush provides excellent value for money and they use great quality products and brands. Would you recommend BLush to others? Absolutely, they provide a great service and fantastic treatments at reasonable prices.

Dine out in style at Oscars of Cardiff Watch the world go by as you dine in or out at this popular eatery in Pontcanna’s buzzing Romilly Crescent. The emphasis is definitely on the freshness of the ingredients and that, combined with the friendliness of the service, means you’re in for a real treat. Oscars offer a superb international menu and they certainly aren’t afraid to experiment, bringing you the mouthwatering Classic Oscars Burger with cheese and cured bacon, tomato relish - scrumptious! You must try the King Scallops with butter crushed peas and bacon and a pickled apple salad or, our personal favourite right now, Baked Chicken (Butterflied chicken breast roasted in Tahini hummus, cucumber, cottage cheese and smoked bacon). Oscars does a very good veggie selection too better than most.

They have an excellent wine list, and the dessert selection never fails to tempt. This family friendly restaurant offers a dedicated children’s menu for the under 12s which is available from noon to 7pm. Oscars is one of our favourite restaurants for lunch or dinner and is especially good al fresco when the sun is shining.

CARDIFF CIT Y HALL

Sue and Martyn Hogg

Acorns sing their way to success On Saturday19th October Acorns Nurseries celebrated their 25th anniversary in style, by hosting a party at Cardiff City Hall. It was attended by all staff from their nurseries in Nantgarw, Cardiff, Newport and Bristol. Cherie Wilson, Director, and the team of managers, assistant managers and teachers have been meeting up to twice a week to create the Acorns choir especially for the 25th anniversary event. It was a huge surprise to staff and fellow Co-Directors Sue and Martyn Hogg who founded the chain of Day Nurseries in October 1988.

The team started with a flash mob performance of Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen, followed by a powerful and confident performance of songs which included Raise your Glass by Pink and Rule the World by Take That. Acorns worked with Sing and Inspire a local company who completely understood the ethos and culture of the company. The choir have been inspired by singing coach Steff Evans who is so energetic, enthusiastic and uplifting.

Cherie said, “I feel it has added real value to the workplace and has been an excellent team building experience as we all contributed to the three part harmonies. We knew it would be a massive challenge but one we were all passionate to take part in. Singing with the children is such a big part of nursery life therefore we felt there would be no better way to celebrate our 25th Birthday.” See feature on page 114

Popped in there recently. What a great gallery they have with some excellent artists on show. Well worth a visit.

Local artist reaches for the stars We meet incredibly talented people on our travels around the valleys which has more than its fair share of creative types. Richard Bennewith is not only a talented web designer but when he’s not clicking away at his computer, he’s a pretty dab hand with a pencil. Richard says, “I studied Fine Art at Plymouth University where the actual process of teaching fine art stopped me from drawing as they push abstraction so much.

“Staff are really friendly and helpful.”

On one occasion, they collected our car from the house and dropped it back same day. For our second vehicle, they came to our office in the morning and then dropped it back in the afternoon. Booking was easy and the costs were no more than we’d experienced the conventional way (in one case more competitive). The CollectMyWheels.com staff are really friendly and helpful too so you’ll be in safe hands (at least from our experience) and they have plenty of great testimonials on their website. CollectMyWheels.Com 029 2002 3239

I haven’t drawn for fifteen years but got back into it recently. Most of the work has been commissions; dogs, children, portraits. I’m a keen carp fisherman so I’ve done some fishy ones too. People can also contact me at Model House where I also teach drawing.” Richard’s Anthony Hopkins portrait has been accepted at the Open Art Exhibition this summer at The Rhondda Heritage Park. A round Wales

A round-up of what’s happening across Wales.

CARDIFF

Kyle Beere is a worthy winner! Steven Thomas has always been a mad keen fan of Cardiff City Football Club and even after he suffered a severe brain injury, he continued to follow his beloved team. Even though Steven was told he would never walk again, he has made remarkable steps to regain his health and functionality. So much so, that he did not need his disabled pass season ticket. Being the kind natured person that Steven is, he decided to offer up his pass in a competition that we ran in the summer. Steven chose the winner and recently presented Kyle with his pass at the City Stadium, along with members of his family, his carers, Steven’s parents and representatives of the Club. Steven said “I read through all of the entries but when I read Kyle’s story, it reminded me so much of myself. ROAT H

Roath Rocks continues to make music In the words of Wayne Courtney, the man behind the extremely successful Roath Rocks, “Roath Rocks is a great way to celebrate music in Roath, at great music venues”. Roath Rocks is not only all about music though. All the money raised goes to chosen charities and it’s also a great opportunity for the bands and artists involved to show their talent, network and perform in local venues like The Globe. In other words, it’s a festival with a lot of fun, great people, quality acts and lots of help for people that are in need. We caught up with local photographer, Peri Trigkas, to find out more. How did you get involved? I saw a tweet about the festival. I love Rock - I live close to Roath - the event was for a good cause so I thought why not? I contacted Wayne and that was it! I’m a relatively new to photography. I’ve always liked photography but I started doing it professionally only a few months ago. I collaborate with other charity organisations in an effort to help people through my photography. My latest project focuses on homeless

Kyle loved his football and was a keen player before his brain haemorrhage at the age of twelve. Even though the specialists wanted to switch off the machines keeping Kyle alive, he defied all the odds and started responding. That happened to me too. I look forward to seeing Kyle at the next home game.” Simon Lim, Chief Executive of Cardiff City said “It is a pleasure to have been able to be involved in this with Steven and his family. Kyle is a very worthy winner and I hope he enjoys coming along to our games with his uncle, who shares his passion for Cardiff City.” people and, in a combined effort with The Wallich, I hope to help raise awareness of the problem. I feel really lucky that I got involved with Roath Rocks. I was expecting to listen to some good music, to take some good actions shots but I never expected to meet so many nice and good people in a week. Is this an annual event? It is. Roath Rocks is in its second year. Last year’s event was a big success. This year was even bigger. It moved from a three day event to a week-long festival. More venues added, more acts, more people got involved. Such a big event requires a lot of work and effort to get everything right. Planning and organising started really early this year. Radio Cardiff was a great help promoting the bands and artists too. I covered all the major events and some smaller gigs. Just to give you an idea in numbers, more than twenty-five bands performed in six different venues. The main event was at The Globe which was packed. What are the plans for the future? After the huge success of previous Roath Rocks there is no question that is going to be a 3rd one too. I don’t really know how bigger can it get but there is potential. This year it might be a Roath Rocks related event very soon, before next September. 10

Katyann Owens, Executive Assistant at Cardiff City Football Club said “What Steven has done here is a completely selfless act and to see Kyle and his family collecting the season tickets was a completely humbling experience for us here. Steven, Kyle and their families are inspirational people and it is great to have them associated with Cardiff City Football Club.” Thomas Gardiner Bathrooms and Interiors 0292 067 9815 sales@thomas-gardiner.com www.thomas-gardiner.com

They say the best recommendation is word of mouth. Emma Pinchbeck of Barry tells us why she loves BLush, Barry for her beauty treatments and why she wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Who are you and what is your occupation?

Dog lovers know that regular grooming makes for happy and healthy pets. Vale Life chatted to Barry resident Linda Chin about her experiences with local dog groomers Posh Pawz and why she wouldn’t take her beloved pooches Roxie Saffy and Mitzi Katie Ophelia anywhere else.

posh paWz How many dogs do you own and what are their names? I have two adorable female Yorkshire Terriers, Roxie & Mitzi. I lost my previous Yorkshire Terriers Sam and Tomas in 2009. Roxie is Mitzi’s mother. A week before we were due to bring Mitzi home, the owner asked us if we wanted Roxie also. I jumped at the chance and so both came home with us. How did you hear about Posh Pawz? I heard about Posh Pawz from a work colleague who had received a leaflet advertising a newly opened dog grooming salon in Rhoose. Why did you choose Posh Pawz? When choosing a dog groomer, there are far more to consider than location and price. I chose Posh Pawz on my first visit to the salon. I received a warm welcome from Jo and Kath who were very happy to answer all of my questions and showed me around. The work area and tools were clean, tidy and everything was on display. They also showed me the cage where my girls would be kept safely while waiting to be groomed. The cages were big enough for my girls to be comfortable and there was a water bowl insitu. Posh Pawz also use hairdryers which was an absolute bonus to me as I have a dislike for the electric cage dryers. My girls relaxed immediately in Jo and Kath’s presence. Mitzi is very timid with strangers. I was asked about their health and Kath completed the relevant forms.

Did you contact any other salons for quotes etc? Yes I did, but it was rather a mixed process. Some offered good things and others never returned my calls. What treatments do your dogs have? Roxie requires a special shampoo because she has a skin disorder, therefore she is shaped and her fur is thinned out, she also has a massage. Mitzi has a bath and thin out. Her fur is more hair-like than her mothers. They both have their nails clipped and their ears are also checked for cleanliness and any internal disorder. On completion, they both have a bow tied into their head hair and the end product is absolutely amazing, they look gorgeous and remain that way. Jo and Kath are also very obliging and are happy for the girls to come in between appointments for a quick thin out.

How has your experience been? The experience has been by far the best as I have used other salons. I discuss any changes and Roxie’s skin disorder. Jo and Kath are now a big part of my girls’ life. I always leave the girls in the salon happy and worry free, knowing that they are being well looked after and safe in my absence. Did you think it was good value for money? Yes it’s very good value. I have paid far more in the past to other salons but have not received the same value and quality and have been very disappointed with the result. Would you recommend the salon to others? A very big YES! It’s by far the best salon I have ever visited. It’s like finding the correct school for your children. Posh Pawz display the skills to bring out the natural beauty in my girls. This is an area that other salons lack. Due to a bad experience, I had lost confidence leaving my girls in salons and was doing the grooming myself; I needed the reassurance that my little girls would be safe and treated with dignity in my absence. Posh Pawz have done this through their hard work, dedication and sheer love for animals. Long may Posh Pawz reign!

How often do you visit the salon? They visit every eight weeks on a Wednesday. I have actually pre-booked for the year. Who carries out the treatments? Having two girls, Jo and Kath carry out the treatment on them both. I really don’t mind who does the treatment as they are both very good at what they do, however Kath is good at putting in the hair bows, I personally can never get them in straight. 36 18

Captain Scott himself may well have been full of praise for chef Spiro Borg, for it is Spiro, as featured on BBC’s The One show, who every year recreates the banquet enjoyed by Scott at Cardiff’s Royal Hotel, before leaving for the Antarctic in 1910.

GREAT SCOTT! There are more strings to Spiro’s bow as he celebrates the 30th anniversary of founding one of Wales’ largest independent caterers, Spiros Fine Dining Caterers. From corporate functions to weddings, children’s parties at Hamleys toy shop, to fine dining dinner parties at client’s homes, Spiros cater for it all. How has the catering business fared during these tough economic times? Post 2008 was a definite downturn for corporate catering, and office based catering such as boardroom lunches and training buffets dipped, but we came through it stronger because of our diversity. Our wedding business has grown dramatically despite recession, as has our Chef at Home service. The wedding sector has been immune to the economic downturn; people will always get married and will always strive for the best possible big day they can.

We have also moved into Film & TV catering division which is growing from strength to strength for us. Business catering has also bounced back hugely, which I think is a barometer of a rosier economic outlook. You have recently been awarded the catering contract for Cardiff Blues, how did that feel? It’s a huge honour for us, the Blues are a sporting institution famed all over the world. We have catered for the squad for a number of years which is fascinating from a sports nutrition point of view. Winning this new contract will see us catering for all match days as well a nonmatch days including all hospitality suites. Cardiff Arms Park has a fantastic heritage in the game and outside of sporting occasions we will be catering for meetings, conferences, special events and even weddings at the stadium. We are very excited to be bringing Spiros brand of cuisine to The Blues.

34 ❧ ❧ 20

How widely do you operate? Throughout South Wales and into South West England. We are preferred caterers at many magnificent wedding venues, including Pencoed House Estate, Canada Lodge on the outskirts of Cardiff and Dyffryn Springs and Cottrell Park Golf Resort in the Vale of Glamorgan. These are typical of a new breed of bespoke wedding venue which offer people something different, and couples really are looking for something different these days. They have invested in providing the best facilities and a wonderful wedding day experience, and I am pleased to say that we are kept very busy as a result! Our film & TV location catering services also takes us far and wide of course. We are fully mobile and can produce our cuisine even when no kitchen facilities are available at all in the most remote of rural locations.

What is the secret of longevity in business? Over and above the must-haves of consistent and attentive customer service and professionalism, I would say you have to be versatile and innovative, anticipate trends and consumer tastes in cuisine, even before they happen. We offer many avenues for customers to engage with us, from our own banqueting and conference centre at St Peter’s Hall in Cardiff, to offices and catering venues throughout the region. We also work in close partnership with our catering venues, bringing our experience and innovation to support them; it really is a case of two brands coming together and supporting each other and we are thrilled to be working with the Blues Hospitality team.

How do you think the world of catering changed over the last thirty years? Trends in cuisine have expanded dramatically. The impact of TV chefs and the arrival and the expansion of multi-cultural restaurants and ingredients mean that people now have a much wider diet and diverse taste for cuisine than ever before; as caterers we reflect that throughout our menus.

Expansion is certainly on the cards; we are currently working on many market opportunities, most of which will come to fruition over the next two years, they are quite big and will surprise the market I am sure, which I like! Apart from that, we will continue to invest in providing absolutely the best possible service we can to our clients.

What future developments do you have in store? Now that would be giving away our secrets! In general we always like to stay ahead of trends and when we move into a new market sector, we ensure we invest fully with no half measures so we really create a fantastic well rounded-service.

“You have to be versatile and innovative, anticipate trends and consumer tastes in cuisine, even before they happen. We offer many avenues for customers to engage with us, from our own banqueting and conference centre at St Peter’s Hall in Cardiff, to offices and catering venues throughout the region.” 21 ❧ ❧ 35

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/gas 7. 2. Roll out the pastry using two square cutters one 10cm diameter and one 9 cm diameter form a square tart using a egg wash to stick sides to base. Put them well spaced apart on a lightly greased baking tray. 3. Cut each fig across into 4 slices retaining the centre 2 (trimmings can be used to make a chutney or jam) and arrange them slightly overlapping on the pastry tarts (2 pieces on each), leaving the 0.5cm raised border free from fig. Sprinkle each tart with ¼ teaspoon of granulated sugar and bake for about 12 minutes, until the pastry is puffed up and golden and the sugar has lightly caramelized. 4. Meanwhile, put the redcurrant jelly into a pan with 2 teaspoons of water and leave over a gentle heat until melted. Set aside to cool slightly but do not let it set. 5. Remove the tarts from the oven and brush the fruit with the redcurrant glaze.

TH E V E N IS O N In the restaurant we use a red wine jus but if time is pressing, I have included a recipe for a de-glazed red wine gravy using the pan juices. Ingredients 600-650g/1lb-1lb 6oz loin of Roe deer 1 tbsp coarsely ground fresh black pepper and salt 3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves only, very finely chopped, plus an extra sprig to serve salt 2 tsp vegetable oil For the sauce: salt and freshly ground black pepper 250ml/9fl oz red wine 4 tbsp butter, softened 4 tbsp plain flour Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200C/Gas 6. 2. For the venison, trim any sinewy bits from the venison loin 3. Sprinkle the black pepper, rosemary, and salt onto a clean chopping board, reserving a teaspoon of the chopped rosemary for the sauce. 4. Rub the loin with the vegetable oil and roll the loin (including the ends) in the rosemary and pepper mixture to lightly coat. The top should be only lightly covered in the pepper and rosemary mixture. 5. Heat a large, heavy-based frying pan until hot. Add the venison, and sear for a couple of minutes. Turn over to sear the other side, then sear the ends.

6. Place the seared venison into a roasting tin and place in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes for rare meat, a bit longer for medium-rare or medium. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for ten minutes. This will ensure moist meat. 7. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Wipe the frying pan that the venison was seared in clean of large bits of rosemary or pepper, but don’t remove the cooked, browned bits. Heat the pan on the hob and, when hot, add the red wine to deglaze. The wine will lift off the browned bits, which will help to flavour the sauce. Cook over a high heat for a minute or two, then reduce the heat. Add a pinch of salt and a bit of freshly ground black pepper. 8. Make a beurre manie by mixing together the softened butter and the flour in a bowl. This will be used to thicken the sauce. 9. Add a teaspoon or two of the beurre manie to the red wine and stir into the sauce until it thickens. Add another small piece or two, stirring as you go, until the sauce has the desired consistency. 10. Stir in the reserved finely chopped rosemary at the end. 11. To serve, slice the venison loin on the diagonal.

“Celebrate Christmas at River View restaurant with dishes that are fresh and full of subtle flavours.” CHINEsE NEw yEar Chinese New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays, and is a time of feasting with the family, celebration, fireworks, and gift-giving. New Year for 2014 is the 31st January 2014 and River View Chinese restaurant will celebrate in style, only on 3rd February, with the traditional lion dance, fire cracker and a luxury feast featuring lobster and other good-luck dishes.

The date of Chinese New Year changes every year with the lunar cycle and the Chinese calendar follows a twelve year pattern with each year named after an animal. The story goes that Buddha (or the Jade Emperor) invited all of the animals to join him for a New Year celebration, but only twelve animals turned up.

“New Year is a time of feasting, celebration, and fireworks.” 44 24

To reward the animals that did come, Buddha named a year after each of them in the order that they arrived, starting with the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The coming year will be the year of the Horse and once again there will be a flamboyant performance from the Kung Foo team. Now that autumn has arrived, it’s time to look at our shoes and boots. Do they need heeling, a new sole or a freshen up? Gone are the days when we threw away our footwear once they were worn or damaged; now we need to save our money by looking after them and extending their lifespan. We chat to Nick Frangoulis, owner of Frangoulis in Penarth and Barry, to find out more about life at a shoe repairers.

sole trader

Where do your customers come from? All over really from the local areas Penarth, Cardiff and Barry, but we also have regular shoppers from Swansea to Chepstow. What do customers ask for most in the autumn months? Gifts for Christmas such as leather wallets, dancewear bags, boot repairs from heels and soles to the alteration of calf sizes to ensure a correct fit. Boots are usually a standard width but customers are individual and we aim to meet their needs.

How long has Frangoulis been established? My wife Jacki and I have been in the business for fourteen years. What services do you offer? We offer a wide and diverse range of services from shoe repairs, key cutting, engraving trophies, award shields, tankards, Zippo lighters, dancewear, gymnastic wear, masks and stage accessories and leather wallets and purses. Tell us about your dancewear offering? We offer a complete range of dancewear including dance shoes for ballet, jazz, tap and ballroom. A range of ballet and dancewear clothes including tutus, bowler hats, face masks, tiaras and bags to carry essential items in.

What do you think makes Frangoulis special? We’re a family business with thirty years experience in the shoe repair industry. We pay great attention to our customers’ needs and provide a friendly and personal service. We expanded into ballet and dancewear because our daughter attended an RAD ballet and tap class and we found it difficult accessing her uniform. We started with the basics, using reputable dance companies and since then we have supplied many local dance and theatre schools with a variety of dancewear needs.

Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t know. My father was a boot maker and passed on his skills and expertise to me, ensuring that the art of shoe making continued. Bespoke shoe making is a very specialist service which we at Frangoulis are proud to provide.

Why did you choose Windsor Arcade to set up the business? We chose the arcade because it has a bustling, thriving variety of small businesses and is the only undercover shopping arcade in the Vale. 26 46

Let’s face it, lots of gift shops sell the same things these days – they generally go to the same shows. So finding a gift shop that’s a bit more unique is quite hard. That’s where the sweet new gift shop in Windsor Arcade, Penarth comes into its own. Owner Leah Pauline took time out of her busy day to tell us what she (and her customers) like about The Polka Dot Door.

the polk a dot door What are your best sellers? We have lots of current favourites, including our British-made satchels, which fashion-wise have made a real come back over the last year. Our Bill Skinner jewellery collection has also been popular, as well as our range of Blaze jewellery which is made locally in Cowbridge. We also have a large range of children’s toys, notably our crocheted soft toys. What products are you excited about getting in for Christmas? We can’t wait for Christmas! We are going to be having a complete overhaul when winter sets in, offering cosy soft furnishings, lots of new toys, Christmas decorations and products, winter fashion accessories and tonnes of gifts.

Who is the owner of Polka Dot Door? I own and run the business with the help of family and friends. Why did you choose to set up the business? I have always wanted to start my own business as I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Opening a gift shop allows me to offer many items of interest including homeware, jewellery, bags, toys and much more. The sourcing of products also interested me, and finding unique products has been a real highlight of the job. In addition, I have always been creative and believed I could design a unique, fun shopping environment for people. What did you do before? I worked for a market research company writing reports on the retail industry. I started this job straight from university, working there for three years. I think the job gave me a lot of insight into the retail market, which helped me to set up this business.

What did you want to offer the people of Penarth and surrounding areas? We had a very clear vision that we wanted to offer something unique to customers, in terms of products and the environment, creating a colourful, enjoyable shop with original products. What products do you sell that are unique to The Polka Dot Door? We have tried to ensure that all of our products are unique and unlikely to be found in nearby locations. Some of our collections are also exclusive to Wales. We have achieved this by stocking many new and up and coming designers, such as our collection of Mint Print pillows and lampshades and our range of Gary Birks china wear. We have also tried to stock most of our products from either UK and/or having been made by ethical companies, as we are strong supporters of the domestic manufacturing industry and Fairtrade. In addition, we have a collection of charity greetings cards from the zArthouse Meath project, which have been greatly received. 47 27

Why did you choose Penarth and the arcade? We were looking for a location with character and felt that Penarth offered this. The town is also filled with creative independent retailers, which I think is what people are looking for. In terms of the shop, I have always loved the arcade and was so pleased that something was available when we started looking at the town.

In 1988 Sue Hogg was looking at nurseries with a friend, and couldn’t find what she was looking for. So, along with husband Martyn, decided to start their own and Acorns was born. 25 years later they now have 12 nurseries throughout Cardiff, Newport and Bristol and have looked after thousands of children.

From Little Acorns How long has Acorn Nurseries been established? Acorns was established in 1988 by Sue and Martyn Hogg, our first nursery opened on the ground floor of our home on Oakfield Steet and was registered for 16 children. Today we have twelve nurseries in Cardiff, Newport and Bristol and are registered for 764 children each day.

We are delighted to be celebrating our 25th Anniversary in October this year, and very proud of the fact that many of our staff have been with us since the early days of Acorns, in fact some of the children we cared for have now come back to join our team as Nursery Nurses and we even care for their children!

“The ethos and culture we work hard to create is that Acorns is a place of fun.”

What do you believe sets you apart from other nurseries? Our philosophy has always been that we provide the same standards of care and dedication that we would want for our own children. Our nurseries offer a home from home environment with plenty of natural light and soft background music, All equipment and resources are of the finest quality and are chosen for their play and learning potential. Our spacious gardens have covered and open play areas, meaning that outdoor play is always fun whatever the weather! The ethos and culture we work hard to create is that Acorns is a place of fun, escape and imagination where children are nurtured and encouraged to learn through discovery and invention. Why do you think parents choose Acorn Nurseries? Many of our parents come to us via recommendation from family, friends and work colleagues. 28

Parents need to be able to leave their child knowing they are safe, secure, content, nurtured and cared for in a happy, relaxed environment.

We have an open door policy meaning that parents can visit us at any time, and prior to starting we offer settling in sessions to meet the individual needs of every child, so that parents and children are happy before they even start with us. We work in partnership with parents and have regular Stay and Play days, Parents Evenings, and Sports Days. We hold Graduation and Christmas concerts, celebrate Grandparents Day, as well as celebrating many different cultures and festivals. Our recent Father’s afternoon was a big success and the children love the opportunity to show their parents the fun they have each day and watch their Dads taking part in Cooking and Arts and Crafts!

“ We have an open door policy meaning that parents can visit us at any time.”

What age groups do you accommodate? Our Nurseries are registered to care for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years, although longer maternity leave means that many babies don’t start with us until the age of 7 months these days. Our Early Years Teachers ensure the transition from Acorns to “Big School” is smooth by following the Framework for Children’s Learning Curriculum used in schools throughout Wales. Tell us about your team at Parc Nantgarw… Our nurseries have strong well established teams, headed by the Nursery Manager, her Assistant and Team Leaders are on hand each day and work closely with the Directors on a daily basis. Their team of Nursery Nurses, Housekeepers and Cooks assist with the smooth running of the nursery and ensure that each child receives the very best care at all times.

Good nutrition is high on your agenda. Please tell us about that… Our cooks at each nursery ensure that the children enjoy fresh home-cooked meals each day. Our Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter Menu’s operate on 4 weekly cycles and offer delicious new flavours and familiar old favourites to tempt little taste buds! Each nursery has a vegetable patch where the children sow vegetables from seed, growing peppers, courgettes, beans etc., after nurturing these and watching them grow they have great delight in harvesting them and enjoying the fruits of their labour at mealtimes. What are your plans for the future? To maintain the high standards of childcare we are renowned for. We have no immediate plans to expand in the near future, opportunities have a funny way of landing on your doorstep when you least expect it - Watch this space!

“ Our spacious gardens have covered and open play areas, meaning that outdoor play is always fun whatever the weather!” 29

There’s no better recommendation than a satisfied customer, and Marlene and Brian Hawker of Cyncoed are no exception. We’ll let them tell you about their experiences of working with Vale Orangeries and how they are enjoying their new orangery.

a sense of Wellbeing

How did you hear about Vale Orangeries? We were considering replacing our existing conservatory which was limited in size and suffered from being too cold in winter and too hot in summer. During our search through various magazines we came across a feature on Vale Orangeries in Vale Life, which Marlene thought was attractive not least because a woman, Leanne – an interior designer, was part of the management.

Did you visit/get quotes from other providers? Yes we did and quotes were obtained but we felt the costs were high. Additionally, products from national firms seemed standardised, management remote, and required a travelling workforce. Even local firms we approached did not give sufficient confidence that the work could, or would, be carried out in accordance with our wishes and to our satisfaction.

What made you buy from them? The easy answer is the perceived value for money. Dean and Leanne were clearly going to be ‘hands on’ at every stage and give their personal attention to every detail of the project – this was a major attraction. Dean assured us that instead of having to accept a standard product our specific needs and requirements would be addressed on a ‘partnership’ basis. In addition the workforce allocated would be under Dean’s direct control and would remain constant and committed to the job. Leanne would not only deal with the administration but would also regularly update us on progress and give advice on interior design. With all this in mind the quotation for our project that we received from Vale Orangeries was very attractive.

“We were, and still are, delighted with the end result the impact of which has far exceeded our expectations and continues to give the ‘Wow’ factor to us and to our visitors.” 30 60

Did you give them a specific brief or were you guided by Dean and Leanne? The size of the orangery was dictated by the site conditions (and the furniture that Marlene wished to be accommodated! Although giving some information on the existing house, we relied on Dean and Leanne to produce a proposal based on our wishes. What could be achieved with regard to the roof, lantern light, bi-folding doors and window was soon determined. Drainage proposals, removal of patio doors, construction of archway, electrics, designer stone floor, wall and ceiling finishes were all subject to discussion and agreement. Were you pleased with the way in which they worked? Dean’s dedication and commitment to ensuring the quality of the work and to a successful outcome was clear throughout the project. Dayto-day problems were dealt with and overcome in a commendable fashion.

How long did the process take? We had an initial meeting in March and the work was completed in October. Were you happy with the end result? We were, and still are, delighted with the end result the impact of which has far exceeded our expectations and continues to give the ‘Wow’ factor to us and to our visitors. The bi-folding doors provide a magnificent wide view of our garden. The completed project remains the subject of excited conversation and compliments from all who see it.

Would you be happy to recommend Vale Orangeries to others? We have no hesitation in recommending Vale Orangeries and the personal input of Dean and Leanne. Indeed we have, with some pride, already gladly exposed the project to others, highlighted the work to friends and relatives, and entertained visits from those considering commissioning an orangery from Vale Orangeries.

What do you use the room for? The orangery is an extension of our lounge and has created a large space to entertain family and friends. The lantern light makes the whole area light and airy added to which the bi-folding doors give total freedom and a feeling of bringing the garden into the home. What difference has it made to the way you live? The orangery faces south and on fine days, we are blessed with sunshine all day long. This makes the orangery a delight for coffee breaks, entertaining grandchildren or more formal parties. From morning to night the extra light and spaciousness continues to give great pleasure and a feeling of well-being. 31 61

fit for purpose It can be a costly and potentially messy business having a log fire installed and, with so much choice available, it can be quite difficult knowing which one would suit your home and lifestyle.

62

With fifteen years experience, Carlton Chivers of The Stove Room in Barry can certainly help. There’s not much Carlton hasn’t seen over the years when it comes to log fires so when Penarth personal trainers John and Tanya Bruno were looking for their ideal log burner, guess who they called? Vale Life chats to John at his lovely Penarth home. How did you hear about The Stove Room? We had driven past their showroom numerous times on Cardiff Road in Barry and noticed their window display. Why did you choose The Stove Room for your fire? We arranged an appointment for Carlton to look at the feasibility of having a log burner in our loft apartment and for him to give us a quote. On meeting Carlton, I realised he knew exactly what he was talking about; questions asked were answered with expertise and knowledge.

“Carlton asked the right questions to make sure that we had the best stove fitted.”

Did you get quotes from any other fire company? When we first purchased our loft apartment, we initially had a quote from a different company but at the time we decided to put this on hold. The quote from Carlton was much more competitive with a better quality stove. What did you think of the service The Stove Room provided? They advised our builder on the regulations and materials needed to ensure that the fire would be safe. With each step of the way from the initial survey to advice on the stove and the installation of the flue and fire, they were excellent. Highly recommended. Did they help you in choosing which fire you wanted? Carlton was quite enthused about the TermaTech TT20RS fitted with almost 80kilos of rounded soapstone on the sides and top plate. Apart from looking ultra modern, the heat is fantastic and when the fire dies down you still get a tremendous heat from the soapstone for hours. After doing lots of research online, there is so much choice and easy to get confused and make a costly wrong decision. Carlton asked the right questions to make sure that we had the best stove fitted for our lifestyle and budget. 33 63

What difference has it made to the way in which you live? The fire is situated in a very large room with vaulted ceilings and having the fire installed has made this a far cosier room. Would you recommend The Stove Room to others? Absolutely. We have already recommended numerous clients with four already having them installed. We’re looking forward to having them back to install a second fire.

We often hear the results of salon treatments from women so it was refreshing when we recently met William Morgan of Cardiff Bay who told us about the treatments he receives at The Beauty Lounge in Penarth and why he wouldn’t go anywhere else.

the beauty lounge

Who are you and what is your occupation? I’m William am 53 and I’m a self employed consultant/entrepreneur. How long have you been visiting The Beauty Lounge? It’s been about three to four months. What treatments do you have there? I started off with having I Lipo Laser fat reduction to reduce fat around my waist. Then I had eight sessions of DermaCo facial treatment to improve the condition of my face. Who is your therapist? The treatments were carried out expertly by all the therapists, namely Sam, Faye and Emily. Have you noticed a difference since having the treatment? Yes, without a doubt – the I Lipo Laser Fat reduction definitely worked well for me. I lost three inches from around my waist. The procedure is so enjoyable and relaxing, it was just a case of lying on the therapy table with a waistband placed around me with the I Lipo pads placed on the skin under the belt. I just lay there in the very tranquil treatment room for about twenty minutes, listening to soothing music and

spending a bit of quality “me” time. It doesn’t hurt at all. All you can feel is a slight warming sensation. Certainly better than going under the knife! With regards the DermaCo facial treatment, I wanted to reduce the lines on my face and create a non-surgical facelift by reducing my neck jowls and define my facial features. It takes about an hour. A full consultation was carried out first and various treatments were identified to do this. Each of the treatments was soothing on my skin and immediately felt that it was making a difference. After each treatment, I immediately felt the results. My skin felt smoother and the muscles in my face felt tighter, creating that lifting look, and the laughter lines were very much reduced. What do you like about The Beauty Lounge? The salon is very well located in central Penarth, with plenty of parking nearby. As a male, the usual “beauty salons” can be intimidating; however I didn’t feel this at all. The salon is very well laid out and they obviously take pride in the décor. The treatment rooms were very inviting. How often do you visit? I visited twice a week normally, and they were very understanding if I couldn’t make an appointment for any reason. Describe the experience As soon as I stepped foot in the Beauty Lounge I immediately felt comfortable, each of the therapists were very welcoming, polite and courteous and made me feel “special”. I completed a Confidential Questionnaire of my 38 72

medical history, which reassured me that this was taken into consideration when deciding on treatments. Each of the therapies was fully explained, in relation to what they did and the effect they would have. It was evident that all the therapists had a thorough knowledge of the treatments. At all times they displayed total professionalism and respect. Each appointment was followed up by a courtesy email which was a nice touch and also confirmation of my next appointment. I was very impressed by their professionalism and it was evident that even at busy times they tried to accommodate customer’s needs that came into the salon without an appointment. They made each customer feel welcome and were very friendly, chatty and pleasant. Do you think they offer good value for money? Absolutely. Not only are there individual prices for each treatment, but there are good package deals which saved me even more. Would you recommend The Beauty Lounge to others? Without a doubt! It’s normally a place for the ladies to pamper themselves, however we males have the skin that also need some TLC sometimes. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Beauty Lounge.

It’s hard to believe that Cyfoes Healthcare is a year old this autumn. To celebrate, Director Andrea Evans and her team are offering clients a few special birthday treats to help them look their best this autumn and winter.

look good feel great

How has business been this past year? I don’t want to speak too soon but very good actually. So much so, I’ve given up my job as a registered nurse at the local hospital to concentrate fully on the business. It was a difficult decision, especially after eleven years in A&E but I really wanted to concentrate my efforts into Cyfoes. What have been the most requested treatments? In an age where we need to look youthful, we have found that clients want to look ”refreshed” rather than “done” so definitely muscle relaxants (Botox), fillers, hair removal and laser treatments have been the treatments that have been top of the list. As it’s your birthday, will you be offering any special offers? Yes, as a thank you to our current and new clients, we will be offering the following:■ Half price Muscle Relaxant ■ £50 off Dermal Fillers ■ 20% off Hair Removal ■ 20% off Laser Treatments

“We will continue to offer 15% off all treatments.” When will the offers start? We have run offers through September and because of their success we are willing to continue to offer 15% off all treatments through October. The offer isn’t to be used in conjunction with any other offers that we may be running at the time. Any gift ideas for Christmas? Burt’s Bees has always been very popular with clients that want truly natural personal care products. Our Burt’s Bees items range from £5 to £20 and make the ideal gift for the person who is environmentally aware. Also, our Murad gift sets will range from £30 to £60. For those not aware, Murad is US based company, also available here in the UK, and offers products which transform skincare with its unique, results-driven range from acne and spot treatments to cellulite, anti ageing, hormonal ageing, redness and sensitive skin. 4176

I understand that you support Charities. Tell me more... It’s good to give back. I ran the The Cardiff 10k on September 8th and raised £200 for 2 Wish Upon A Star charity concerned with bereavement support for families and parents. As a company, we are also supporting the charity in their Christmas Women’s evening on 8th November in the All Hallows Church in Miskin, with 10% of purchases bought from our stall on the evening going to the charity. Christmas box sets will be available from October. With a stressful and testing job, it’s no wonder Jan Morgan of Rhoose needs time to herself to unwind every now and again. We chat to Jan to find out why the Vale Resort and Spa is her favourite place to relax and recharge.

r elax & r echarge Would you recommend the treatment and The Vale Spa to others? Yes definitely. I constantly recommend the Vale Spa to everyone who’ll listen. I regularly encourage my friends to join me and recently I’ve been organising ‘Twilight Spa’s’ so all my friends can get together and have a real girlie catch up – we always come out smiling. My daughter Holly is also a big fan of the spa and we regularly take time out when she’s home from University (no phones allowed) so we can have quality time together with no interruptions. Who are you and what do you do? Jan Morgan. I’m mum to my beautiful daughter Holly (currently studying English at Loughborough University) and I’m a Personal Assistant/Secretary to Andrea Hague, Director of Velindre Cancer Centre and Dr Tom Crosby, Clinical Director.

What is your favourite treatment so far? I enjoy the whole experience of the Vale spa, the staff are always so friendly and cheerful which makes the experience so unique. I enjoy the holistic treatments the best as I strongly believe in re-tuning the mind and body.

What treatments do you have at The Vale Hotel Spa? I love all the treatments and would be quite happy to spend a week having every single one of them; one of my favourites is the Vale full body Swedish massage.

Please tell us about your treatment using the Vale’s signature products The Maychang Halo? The Maychang (oil of tranquillity) Halo Exfoliating Drizzle Massage is quite a unique experience as the products are exclusive to the Vale Spa, it’s a blend of Ylang Ylang the smell is divine and leaves the skin soft and replenished. The treatment takes about an hour and I dare anyone not to doze off halfway through! I also use the product in the form of body lotion to make the experience last a bit longer and will add more after the treatment.

Why do you have these treatments? My life is very hectic and there are times when I need to unwind, I don’t think people take enough time out for themselves and I believe it’s important to have ‘me time’ at least once a month, I make full use of all the facilities at the Vale Spa (pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna). I feel so relaxed after a spa day and then energised for the next week (if that makes sense!). I recognise the need to recharge my ‘batteries’ and ensure I make time to de-stress. Who is your therapist? I have had a few therapists, depending on the treatment I have; Debs (or Cheryl as I know her affectionately) is my very favourite and also Amanda, all the girls at the Vale Spa always make you feel special from the moment you walk in – Sophie always has a smile for everyone and Gemma from Skin deep cosmetics looks after my eyebrows.

How does your skin look and feel one week after the treatment? I still feel the benefits of any treatment for a few weeks. My hair doesn’t always look its most glamorous, especially after a head massage but I really feel at peace with everything and the smell of the oils linger on the skin for ages afterwards, heavenly! Would you have it done again? Yes, yes and yes! Do you feel it was good value for money? Yes I do, sometimes if something makes you feel good you can’t put a price on it. 51 45

Do you feel the staff go the extra mile? Working at Velindre Cancer Centre is a very rewarding job it has highs and lows as in most jobs, being able to come to the Vale makes me feel very special and nurtured which makes me very happy. I’ve held a wonderful fashion show for Velindre Cancer Centre at the Hotel and the Spa which was so popular. Claire Caddick, Leisure and Spa Manager is always open to any suggestion and is an enormous help to me with her continuing support of the charity. Here’s to my next spa!

The Dolphin, on Barry Island, has enjoyed commanding views over Whitmore Bay and the Bristol Channel ever since it was opened in 1999 by the charismatic businessman and entrepreneur, Ken Rogers. Today the second and third generations of the Rogers family are at the helm.

The Dolphin Dream You’ve incorporated KR’s into The Dolphin... Yes, KR’s on Barry Island was run by the Rogers family for approximately twelve years and enjoyed enormous success with tribute and party nights. We have had a break for the past five years but and are aiming to bring back the good times with KR’s Cabaret at The Dolphin. Acts such as the Queen Tribute band Mercury was really popular at KR’s for over ten years until we closed. We’ll be having them back on the 7th December - we’re really excited about that. You will need to book early as we predict a sell out.

Ken’s dream of a magnificent pub/ restaurant with fantastic views across the Bristol Channel was realised shortly before he died suddenly in 2000. The Dolphin is now owned and managed by Ken’s son Ian and wife Jackie. We caught up with Ian after a bracing autumnal stroll on the beach and a lovely Sunday roast. You’re clearly passionate about The Dolphin. What makes it so special? It’s dad’s legacy. He loved The Dolphin. He wanted it to be the kind of place everyone could come to and just have a good time. It’s just friendly and welcoming. Why did he call it The Dolphin? He liked dolphins. He thought dolphins have an affinity with mankind. He believed dolphins are peaceful and sociable creatures. I think he hoped The Dolphin could be a place where customers could relax and just enjoy a drink, good food and a bit of banter. It was his dream, and it has such great views of the sea. Is it just you and Jackie or do you have other family members involved? Our daughter Kirsty plays a big role in the running of The Dolphin.

What’s on offer to customers? We have a quiz night every Thursday with a cash prize and band night is every Friday. We try to book bands local to the Vale. Saturday nights are tribute nights these are very popular. We have Queen, Abba, Micheal Buble, Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams, Take That, Tina Turner, The Drifters, and many stars and acts from the 60s, 70s and 80s. We are even planning some comeback gigs for original groups from the 60s. Bands like The Black Abbots and The Searchers - customers really love those. A big attraction will be Owen Money he was the star act for a charity function on the 6th October in aid of Leukaemia but he’ll be back again for two dates near Christmas on the 13th and 14th December. Readers can check our website for more dates and further information.

“...the kind of place everyone could come to and just have a good time. It’s just friendly and welcoming.” 48

Will you be screening sporting events? Yes. We have now completed our installation of two giant screens and projectors to show all the best events - customers tell us it’s one of the best venues in the Vale. We are looking forward to the Rugby season - it will be the best atmosphere to watch the match outside of the ground. Why do you think The Dolphin is so popular on Sundays? Without doubt our Sunday carvery. We can do over 300 on a good Sunday. We charge a reasonable price and don’t rip people off. It’s all freshly cooked on the premises. We have people coming from all over South Wales. They take a walk on the beach and then tuck into a great roast dinner. We also have a car boot on Sundays in the Fair area - that’s very popular, and we’ll be holding an indoor fair and fete in November and December.

You might not know that the house at Dyffryn Gardens near St. Nicholas, closed for 17 years, is open once again; there are also the wonderful gardens to enjoy so there’s never been a better time to visit.Gwenno Mair Griffith, Visitor Experience Manager of the National Trust, tells us more...

“ As we approach the autumn the gardens are about to explode into a myriad of warm autumn colours. The Arboretum is a spectacle in itself, originally designated as a plant nursery it now hosts 17 Champion Trees and species from all over the world. Reginald Cory was a great plant hunter and some of the species survive today.”

Dyffryn Gardens In early 2013, Dyffryn Gardens opened under the National Trust. Since then thousands have visited the 55 acre gardens and discovered what lay behind the house’s once closed doors.

Dyffryn House lay closed for 17 years and opened its doors to the public once again over Easter 2013 after some of the principal rooms were restored to their former glory. Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and contributions from Vale of Glamorgan Council and CADW, major renovations took place in five of the main rooms in the house, both on the ground and first floor.

One of the first things that people notice are the wonderful views of the garden that are to be seen from the house, designed as a gallery from which to view the landscape. This October, there’ll be a chance to do this in a very different way. On the evenings of 25 – 27 October the gardens will be transformed by light to host the ‘Rooms with a View’ event. The gardens will be illuminated, and the spectacle of colour can be enjoyed from the comfort of Dyffryn House, with a short walk to end the evening up to the lit up glasshouse. There’s plenty to discover in the gardens at Dyffryn, from the wild Arboretum to the intimate garden rooms. 54

Designed as a network of spaces within the gardens, each garden room with its own character, from the Pompeian garden to Lavender court, and the walled garden with its impressive glasshouse, restored in the last few years. Escape from the outside into the warmth of the glasshouse to view and impressive collection of cacti and orchids.

When a hair salon decides to change the brand of shampoo, conditioners and hair colours, it’s a huge leap of faith. Not only are they loyal to their brands but their clients are too. It was a major decision for Blu Hair Design of Penarth to change from its current supplier to Wella. We spoke with Mark Underwood, Account Manager of Wella UK for twelve years to find out what’s so good about Wella and how this change will benefit customers.

Wella,Wella ,Wella, huh! What does Wella offer salons that other brands do not? While I can’t comment on other professional brands, I do know that having worked with salons for over twelve years, Wella has been fundamental in their growth and success. I work with each of my salons and understand their business objectives and what they want to achieve and tailor products, education and business support to honour this. Our events such as Trend Vision Award provide colourists and stylists throughout the UK a chance to profile their success within the industry but also to their customers.

What is your background? I joined Wella in 2001 as a Business Development consultant, focusing on our premium retail brands which I did for four years before moving onto an account manager role. In my personal life I am married to Susannah, and have two wonderful children. My big passion is football and supporting Aston Villa. Why do you think Wella is such a good brand? Wella delivers premium, award winning quality products and training that have proven to drive excitement with customers and grow salon businesses. Our professional colour Koleston Perfect is brand of choice for hair colour in over 100,000 salons worldwide, while our launch of Color:id has opened up the creativity for colourists throughout the world. While we produce and deliver products and services our education that we offer stylists and colourists ensure that they reach their potential. I’m extremely proud to work for a brand that has delivered first class products and business support with the hairdresser and their salon at the heart of everything.

What are the colour trends and styles this autumn/winter? Every season Wella launches seasonal trends and with many of our stylists working on international fashion week shows we gain a real insight in what is going to be hot. The Autumn/Winter trends for this year are grand, glamorous waves and curls creating opulent and luxurious looks. Bronze, coppers and golds are the colour theme for this trend. There are also dramatic lines and angles to create minimalist aesthetics in different textured hair. The colour themed for this is loud, strong contrasts, irregular colour and bold shapes.

“Since the change, our clients have commented on the vibrancy and depth of the colours and how long lasting they are.” 83 60

Commenting on the change to Wella, Alexis Williams and Hayley Williams both agree “In this industry, you cannot stand still. As with every business, you have to evolve and we are very excited to be working with Wella, which is such an established and respected brand. Since the change, our clients have commented on the vibrancy and depth of the colours and how long lasting they are. We are confident that we have made the right choice for the salon and, more importantly, our clients.

It’s been tastefully refurbished over several years by the landlord and is inhabited by a fine selection of small independent shops and businesses. I love the stylish glass doors at both ends, the flagstone floor and the tasteful paintwork - a cool, calming homage to Farrow & Ball - a much welcome rest for the eyes after the plastic attack we receive on most high streets. There’s a great selection of businesses inside; a traditional sweetshop, a bespoke jeweller, great little gift shops and much more. It has a lovely atmosphere and can even accommodate you for a coffee, lunch or afternoon tea (and, thankfully, not a chain logo in sight).

Honestly, Windsor Arcade is a little bit special - it’s a reminder of the best of the past, when businesses thrived in small enclaves and shopping was as much about socialising as filling a basket. If you’ve not been, it’s well worth a visit. We think you’ll love it as much as we do. COFFEE LOUNGE & RESTAURANT

When Louise and Andrew Hughes were planning their wedding, they wanted it to be truly special. They knew from the outset that it needed…

A bit of Pzazz! What difference did their services make to your wedding day? So many of our guests have commented on the dance. It made our day so unique. The makeup stayed all day and I was so happy with how I, my mother and bridesmaids looked. By selecting Pzazz it meant I could have one company to rely on for two important and special aspects of the day. They were so professional and friendly they helped us enjoy the day as we could relax.

When you’re planning an important event - a wedding, family party or special occasion, you want it to be perfect. Sisters Faye and Holly, from Cardiff, bring the right amount of pzazz to any special event, hence their company name - Pzazz. We chatted to Louise Hughes about how Pzazz helped make sure her wedding left her with great memories that will last forever. How did you hear about Pzazz? I have known the girls for many years. We met through a mutual friend and have been friends ever since. I have seen their careers flourish and have witnessed the excitement of the creation of Pzazz. What services did they offer you? I chose to have the bridal make-up package and also booked two bridesmaids and mother of the bride make up. We also had our first dance choreographed and taught to us. As we have a very eclectic taste in music, this was not easy as we decided to have a mix of four songs from Etta James to The Stone Roses! Andrew and I got married on Saturday, 23rd February 2013 at All Hallows Catholic Church in Miskin and had our reception at The Vale Resort and Spa.

Were you happy with the services Pzazz gave you? I was over the moon. Faye’s makeup was beautiful and she kept us all calm. She had four women to make-up and did so wonderfully and with plenty of time to have photos before we went to the church. It was great fun getting ready and she worked so well with hair and our photographer. It was important that they worked together and did so brilliantly. The photos speak for themselves - we did all look picture perfect. As for our first dance, it was a triumph! We practiced and really enjoyed the time together during our wedding preparation. It would be easy to not have special time together in the run up to the wedding but our first dance gave us the opportunity to have special time and fun time together! As we had four songs – At Last - Etta James, Higher and Higher - Jackie Wilson, This is the one - Stone Roses and The Wannadies - You and Me, Holly had quite a task to create a routine for us which blended the four very diverse sounds together. It was a great routine and we do watch it back regularly on YouTube to remind us of our special day.

“ As for our first dance, it was a triumph! ” 65

Did they exceed your expectations? Absolutely - the girls kept to the schedule and plan which we had agreed on. Specsavers has launched a new £1million flagship store in Cardiff city centre offering state-of-the-art optical retail experience in Cardiff. The investment sees Specsavers double the size of its retail space in the city centre by moving from its old base on Queen Street into the premises next door, previously occupied by Game.

Specs A ppeal

The new 6,000 sq ft store, which is independently run, is the first of its kind for the global optical retail chain, marking its maiden million pound project and the biggest financial investment within the Specsavers Group, which has 1,600 stores world-wide. City Life caught up with one of the store’s directors and local business owners, Frank Moloney, to find out more. How long has Specsavers been in Cardiff? We opened our doors in 1987 in a small base on St Mary Street with just twelve employees and two testing rooms. We are now one of the largest in the UK, employing 95 people. Myself and my wife Laoise started the practice and we were joined by Pauline O’Neil, who has since become a partner at the Penarth store. In August 1993 the store was relocated to 90 Queen Street.

Why the move? The move has allowed the store to undergo an interior make-over and creates a more comfortable environment for customers and staff. We now have two floors, with three customer waiting areas instead of one, and a modern display area showcasing more than 2,000 pairs of glasses from the likes of Gok Wan, Jasper Conran, John Rocha and the new Replay range.

Why now, given the current economic climate? The economic climate hasn’t affected the store as we’ve seen an increase in our customer base year on year. It had been clear for quite some time that our existing store couldn’t accommodate the growth we’ve seen. The new store allows us to increase our capacity while giving us a more comfortable environment in which to provide a better customer experience.

The move also allows us to include a bespoke mobility testing room for disabled customers, and state-of-the-art equipment that enables us to reduce waiting times. We have created 10 new jobs in the process.

Who else is involved in the business? The business is run as a joint venture partnership between Specsavers Optical Group and myself, my wife Laoise and James Deavall who we have recently taken on as a partner.

“The economic climate hasn’t affected the store as we’ve seen an increase in our customer base year on year.” 66

Why did you invest in the Cardiff store? This is landmark for us here in Wales that puts us on a par with anyone in the world offering optical retail on the high street. We are taking the drama out of optics and offering an eye care experience unlike any other – enabling our customers to be seen quicker, and with the very latest technology. Tell us more about your new testing rooms? We’re very proud of them, as they are equipped with the latest eye care technology able to capture 3D images of the eye, enhanced digital retinal photography cameras and new equipment to measure the pressure and curvature of the eyes. This will allow optometrists to more quickly detect serious conditions on the spot, without the need for referrals for further monitoring before a patient can be admitted directly to hospital.

Your staff are very important to you. Why is that? The practice, which is currently one of only two opticians in Wales to hold the Investors in People ‘gold’ standard, will now also house a new training centre for staff to help develop the next generation of management and optometrists. Laoise, James and myself believe it is important to offer real career opportunities here at Specsavers and we want to invest in our staff to help them develop and fulfil their potential. Our new training centre is very much a part of that.

“We are taking the drama out of optics and offering an eye care experience unlike any other – enabling our customers to be seen quicker, and with the very latest technology.” Specsavers Opticians 92 Queen Street Cardiff CF10 2GR 029 2039 0297 www.specsavers.co.uk The store one of the few remaining independently run businesses on Queen Street n The re-launched store is the first of its kind for Specsavers n It represents a significant investment and is the biggest financial investment within the Specsavers Group, which has 1,600 stores world-wide n

Tell us about your work with GP’s... The new branch delivers eye care services under the Welsh Government’s Wales Eye Care Initiative (WECI), which means patients can be seen directly following a referral from their GP, or can make an appointment with the store in person, to avoid the need for hospital visits where possible. 67

Empire House is an exclusive development that is breathing new life into one of Cardiff ’s Grand Listed buildings. City Life had the opportunity recently to view the apartments and we were blown away by the quality of the finish and the stunning panoramic views from the penthouse suite.

Empire House Originally built by Cardiff architects Percy Thomas and Ivor Jones in 1926 for “Evans and Reid” one of the largest coal exporters in Wales, Empire House become an iconic landmark within Mount Stuart Square and has been home to some of the high profile businesses of their time, such as the Reardon Smith Shipping Line. We chat to Peter Vidler one of the directors of Cardiff Bay Investments Ltd to find out more about how the sales of the exclusive apartments are going.

What is so special about these apartments? There’s nothing else out there like what we have managed to create at Empire House. This is a small, more intimate development, combining the traditional grandeur of the building with luxury modern living, high specification, and contemporary finishes. It’s no run-of-the-mill apartment complex but a niche product that is a breath of fresh air to purchasers who want something other than the norm.

I understand that the penthouse suite has been sold? Yes, although I can’t tell you who by. Originally the penthouse suite was two apartments but the buyer has bought both properties and we have converted into one suite, as per their specifications. It’s something quite special and, with the 360 panoramic views across the bay and beyond, we believe it’s well worth the price they paid for it.

How are the sales of the other apartments going? Really well, considering the current economic climate. It just shows that there are discerning buyers out there who want what we’re offering. We’ve had Premier League footballers and a couple of celebrities who have shown an interest. It’s not only the grandeur of the building and the apartments themselves that set them apart but the high specification, and contemporary finishes as well. We don’t see them staying on the market for too long. 69

How many apartments does Empire House have? There are 37 luxury one and two bedrooms apartments, all of which sit below a bespoke 3400sqft Duplex Penthouse Suite with three private terraces, offering breathtaking views. We have sold 60% and the rest are going fast. We expect to be sold out by Christmas/early New Year.

With a plethora of dental practices filling the pages of glossy magazines, how does one choose the best one for them? We chatted to successful property developer, Paul Bailey, on why he chose The Parade Specialist Dental Centre, Cardiff.

WHEN ONLY THE BEST WILL DO

How did you hear about The Parade Dental Centre? My own dentist, Eric Joseph, who had been treating me for years, suggested I contact Gareth Jenkins of The Parade as he knew of his excellent reputation. Why did you choose The Parade for your dental treatment? I was losing bone and needed implants. Did you contact any other practice for quotes? No, as with most things, I tend to go on recommendation and if my dentist recommended Gareth, then that was good enough for me. What work did Gareth carry out? I had ten implants done in one treatment. That might have not been the best decision to make as it was a lengthy process but I was extremely busy at the time and couldn’t afford to go back and forth for treatment. Gareth was happy for this to happen and we just got on with it.

How long ago did this take place? It was about twenty two years ago but that goes to show how good Gareth’s work is as they are still going strong to this day! How did you find the treatment? Excellent. Gareth was thorough and extremely professional. I am as pleased with my teeth now as I was back then. Whilst implants aren’t cheap, I have found them extremely good value for money when you think of the cost per wear over 20 years! Would you recommend The Parade Dental to others? I tell everyone how good the practice is. I visit every the hygienist every six to eight weeks and most of my family are treated at the there as well. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

“Gareth was thorough and extremely professional.” 27 17 71

The word lose is not something Cardiff City fan, Allan Gardiner, enjoys hearing, but mention loos or bathrooms and you’ll get an altogether more positive response.

Flushed with Pride Allan owns and manages Thomas Gardiner Interiors, near Culverhouse Cross, which specialises in designing and building high-end bathrooms, wet rooms, loos and interiors. Allan’s also a passionate Cardiff City fan so the opportunity to design something for his beloved club was not one he was going to pass up.

Was it an easy job? Relatively speaking, yes, but the rooms are much smaller than I would have hoped for, so creating a design that had real impact was a little bit of a challenge. Also, I wanted something that reinforced the club’s brand. We have embraced the red so it made sense that we echoed that in the designs.

Tell us about the project... I was chatting with a friend who happens to be involved with the club and he mentioned that the Director’s loos were looking a little tired and would I take a look at them. I think they just thought, loos are loos, so just wanted them tidied up a little.

It looks very clean and hi-tech, is it? Absolutely, everything is controlled with a remote so you don’t need to touch any of the furniture. For example, the furniture/sinks are by Burgbad and are all activated without touching anything. The toilet is by Duravit, Senowash and has a heated seat and controllable wash/dry features. The infra red taps by Hansgrohe.

When I saw them I was quite gobsmacked really. They were just basic and I thought that the Director’s (and especially their wives and partners) deserved something a little more in keeping with the club’s Premier League pedigree so I offered to put some designs together which they subsequently chose.

Is the club pleased with the results? Yes, definitely. I’m not sure even they realised how good the design would turn out and I’m over the moon. It’s not every day you get to create such a striking project for your favourite football club. 72

And what happens if a Cardiff City fan wants the same in their home? Not a problem, I’d love to design a whole bathroom in this style. It’s a striking colour and the chrome really pings against the red. Bring it on I say.

It’s been six months since the re-launch of The Secret Garden of Beauty in Barry and Vale Life was keen to catch up with owner Aldene Thomas to find out how customers were responding to the changes the team have made.

Aldene Thomas

bigger and better Signature Treatments, what a great idea. What’s yours? I have developed The Results Driven Facial. Having worked with all the big brands like Guinot, and Caci over the years, I used all that knowledge and training to formulate our own Signature Facial for The Secret Garden. The treatment is designed to restore your skin’s luminosity by using galvanic, ultrasonic and high frequency techniques and a cocktail of the most advanced cosmeceutical ingredients available. The facial has been so successful that I spend at least 60% of my working day doing them, which I love.

Melissa - Therapist

How have things been since the re-launch? It’s far exceeded our expectations. We’ve gone from two rooms to five and doubled our team. We now have seven therapists and a front desk manager. The main obstacle when we were smaller was the lack of space to accommodate clients, which resulted in clients having to wait weeks for an appointment. This has changed and it’s so much easier for clients to get an appointment when they want, which has definitely eased my stress!

What are the popular treatments at the moment? Client favourites are the ‘Fragrant Flower Escape’, a wonderful Frangipani tropical flower oil massage which is pure indulgence and smells Devine and the Lava Shell Massage which, combined with tropical massage oil, warm marine polished sea shells glide smoothly over the body, leaving you feeling truly rejuvenated.

So, your excellent reputation has travelled out into the Vale? Yes, it seems clients are willing to make the journey from further afield. We are very lucky to have such a supportive client base. They recommend us to their friends and family and also being in Vale Life has helped to spread the word too!

That’s lovely to hear. What are your plans for the rest of the year? The Secret Garden in autumn and winter is really lovely as the heating goes on and we all cwtch in. Christmas is a very busy time for us, particularly with gift voucher sales, which means January and February is equally busy with clients coming in for a well earned treat. So what’s next, anything exciting planned for next year? We are constantly evolving as a salon and as a team, we have lots of new ideas in the pipeline and we promise you’ll be the first to know!

So, are you enjoying having more room? The lovely thing about having more space is we see our regular clients more often now and we have several new clients from Cowbridge, Penarth and Rhoose. We are so pleased with how the salon has been received by our regular clientele, and our new ones, who have been extremely complimentary about us. The team are very happy too and we all love coming to work. The Secret Garden of Beauty 25 Tynewydd Road Barry Vale of Glamorgan CF62 8HB 01446 733306 secretgardenofbeauty@live.com www.secretgardenofbeauty.co.uk

What’s new to the salon? With more space we have been able to develop several Signature Therapies which are unique to us at The Secret Garden and each therapist has developed their own Signature Treatment. Our new Spa Specialist, Samantha, arrived from Switzerland with a ‘treasure trove of new treatments’; so many in fact, we’ve had to create a whole new service menu just for her!

“ With our bite-sized versions of Christmas classics, people enjoy all the flavours of festive food, without becoming too full. Favourites include Turkey and Pheasant Roulade, Stilton and Walnut Filo Parcels, Mini Beef Wellington and Christmas Pudding Crème Brûlée. I would encourage everyone to try something different this Christmas by following our recipes.”

TurkEy aND PHEasaNT roulaDE Serves 4

Ingredients 4 x 6 oz Turkey Breast (off the bone and skinned) 8oz Pheasant Mousse Fresh Cranberries For the mousse 8oz Cooked Pheasant (preferably breast) 1oz Butter (softened) 1 Whole Egg Grated lemon rind Season with salt and pepper

Method 1. Using a food processor combine all the ingredients for the mousse and blend until a smooth paste is formed then set aside in the fridge. 2. Place a sheet of cling film on a firm kitchen surface and place a turkey piece on top then cover with another sheet of cling film. 3. Using a rolling pin or mallet gently flatten the turkey breast until flat and thin, taking care not to overbeat. Repeat for all 4 pieces of turkey. 4. Lay the meat out on a fresh piece of cling film and divide the pheasant mixture equally on to the meat. 5. Carefully roll the meat up to form a sausage type roll, squeeze the ends of the Clingfilm together to secure the roll and then repeat for the remaining pieces of meat. 6. Place a pan of water on the stove and bring to the boil, turn down the heat slightly to allow it to just steam. Place a steaming tray on the pan and steam the rolls for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and once cooled place in the fridge until ready to serve. 7. When you are ready to prepare the dish, remove the roll from the Clingfilm, place on a baking tray and cook in a hot oven 200C /8 gas for approx 10 minutes. Once cooked remove from the oven and slice into ¼ inch thick pieces and place on a bread crouton – cut to same size then decorate with a little cranberry. Linda Davies-Carr was introduced to Arbonne products by a friend. She couldn’t believe the difference they made to her skin. So impressed, she became an Arbonne Consultant. Linda loves nothing more than when a customer becomes an Arbonne convert and Cheryl Bass, founder of I AM WOMAN tells us why she’s made the switch.

Arbonne

How did you hear about Arbonne? I’d met a few people who were using Arbonne and I was asked if I’d like to try the products.

What made you want to try it? I wanted to see what all the hype was about, and if their claim of clinical trials to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in 24 hours was true.I’m delighted to say it was! Which products did youparticularly like from the range? The eye cream and night cream are my favorite and my desert island products! What was your experience of, and after, using them? My skin tingled a little when I first started using them, but I realised it was because they were very botanically active. It soon settled down and my skin is softer, and looks younger.

“I liked that it’s a simple system, and I was getting high end, products at affordable prices.”

What difference do you feel they made to your skin? My skin is certainly softer, the fine lines have reduced, and I have a glow about me. People keep asking if I’ve had some work done! What did you particularly like about the Arbonne products? I liked the fact that it’s a simple system, and I was getting high end, quality products at affordable prices. Will you continue to use them? Absolutely – I love the fact that they are ordered online, delivered direct, and I save all the hassle of having to go into town to get them. I’m very busy and this is perfect. Would you recommend the products to friends and colleagues? I’d recommend them to everyone they do what they say they will. If you’re looking for great skincare at a reasonable price they are excellent – and have a reassuring 45 day money back guarantee.

Davies & Jones Optometrists invest in cutting-edge technology to ensure patients receive the highest standards of care.

Owain Mealing lives in Ynyshir in, as he puts it, “a small house with a big view.” His passion is eye care and he is a Director of Davies & Jones Optometrists.

The

Owain, 29, joined Davies & Jones Optometrists in 2005 following three years training at City University London, graduating with the Cantor & Nissel Prize for best undergraduate clinical work. Owain is passionate about eye care and has a special interest in glaucoma - he works one day a week at Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s glaucoma clinic and glaucoma triage unit. What’s your role at Davies & Jones? Since I started as a director in 2008, I have overseen the introduction of new technology to the business. Davies & Jones have always had cutting edge equipment; they introduced the first digital retinal camera in Wales in 1994. I can remember being imaged on this as a patient. Many of the local consultants came to visit and cast their eyes over this wonderful piece of kit - they were all impressed. Since then we have continued to invest in the latest technology to improve our detection and diagnostic abilities.

“ We never stop learning - there’s always a new challenge, a new patient - it’s this that makes life interesting and, ultimately, most rewarding.” 80

Visionary What are your aspirations for Davies & Jones? Davies and Jones will continue to provide cutting edge eye care to all our patients, whether NHS or private. We’ve developed a holistic approach to eye care that has served us and patients well. I think the way we get to know clients sets us apart. We’re on first name terms with many - it really is a cradle to grave service as my family and I have experienced over the last thirty years. I think my core objective is to ensure that this close contact with patients isn’t compromised in any way and that we develop and improve our services.

We also have links with secondary care providers, and are lucky to have local consultants holding private clinics in Talbot Green and in Porth. Many private hospitals are under equipped for diagnosis and can be almost inaccessible to patients living in the valleys. Being able to provide private ophthalmology means patients can get their cataracts and other eye conditions sorted out quickly. It’s a great privilege to be able to offer this kind of comprehensive service.

What’s the most rewarding part of your work? Detecting eye disease that would result in blindness and getting a patient treated in a timely fashion is just hugely rewarding. Using skills that I continue to hone day in day out to enhance a patient’s care is what makes my job most enjoyable. The fact is, we never stop learning - there’s always a new challenge, a new patient - it’s this that makes life interesting and, ultimately, most rewarding. For the last three years we have been offering orthokeratology (or Orthok, it’s easier to say!). It is a completely reversible non-invasive treatment for short-sightedness that involves sleeping in specially designed contact lenses that, when removed in the morning, mean a patient does not have to wear contacts or spectacles for clear vision during the course of the day. It has really taken off and is no more expensive, or risky, than wearing daily, disposable contact lenses. This means that patients can enjoy safe, clear and comfortable vision all through the day. 81

What’s your vision for the future? We never stop learning. That’s one of the things I love about Davies & Jones. There’s a real thirst for knowledge all our optometrists undergo more than the basic optometry qualifications and each develops special interests in addition to the day to day eye examination.

“Not many hotels can boast such beautiful surroundings as Llangoed Hall as it nestles confidently in the beautiful Wye Valley.”

Prints Charming Sometimes we all want a little luxury. Somewhere to relax and escape from the day-to-day grind, so when my wife suggested we take a weekend break at Llangoed Hall half an hour north of the heads of the valleys my initial thoughts weren’t particularly positive.

The first thing I did was take a look at the website and, I’ll be perfectly honest, my initial impression was that it looked a little stuffy - chintzy even. Anyway, she seemed keen on the idea and I was more than willing to embrace the occasion as we both needed a well deserved bit of rest and relaxation. We took our time driving to Llangoed on this particularly gorgeous sunny day in July. Partly because it was so gorgeous, as we eased our way over the Beacons but also, if I’m honest, because I still wasn’t convinced this was a great idea. There’s a long drive down towards the hotel but it’s only once you make the final turn to arrive head on that its sheer magnificence becomes apparent. It really is quite stunning. Not many hotels can boast such beautiful surroundings either as it nestles confidently in the beautiful Wye Valley. 82

As we headed inside, any thoughts of stuffiness disappeared very quickly. This is an exceptional hotel. Everything about it exudes quality. If you love art, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven - it’s everywhere, and it’s of exceptional quality. Whistler, Herman Dudley Murphy and James Cowie adorn the walls - it’s on par with a national museum. It’s only a little later that, after chatting with staff, I realise it was once the home of Sir Bernard Ashley, husband of Laura Ashley and their influence becomes obvious. The interiors are truly gorgeous with rich fabrics and prints, and glistening chandeliers. Our bedroom, apparently, used to be Sir Bernard’s and enjoyed commanding views down the valley to Llyswen and its church in the distance.

“The interiors are truly gorgeous with rich fabrics and prints, and glistening chandeliers.” In the afternoon we took a short drive down to Hay-On-Wye. I hadn’t been to Hay for thirty years and I can tell you it has lost none of its charm - it really is a must visit. Back to Llangoed and a fantastic shower in our beautiful bathroom and we’re ready for dinner - and what a dinner. The food here is simply fantastic. My wife loved Llangoed Hall. For me, it was simply one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had in ten years. The staff are superb. I’ve not felt so ‘at home’ at a hotel for many years. They really do take good care of you and nothing seems too much trouble. Llangoed Hall is no ordinary hotel. It’s really something quite special and to think I thought it was going to be stuffy. How wrong could I be? Llangoed is officially one of my most favourite hotels in the world. 83

Llangoed Hall Llyswen, Brecon, Powys LD3 0YP 01874 754525 www.llangoedhall.co.uk Llangoed Hall has 23 luxury rooms and a stay is priced from £150.00 per room based on two sharing and is inclusive of breakfast and Wi-Fi.

missy

There’s been a huge buzz in Talbot Green ever since Missy opened on the high street. Vale Life chatted to owner Debby Evans about her new venture and the buzz that Missy has created.

What made you want to open a boutique Debby? I have been in the fashion retail trade for thirty six years and feel that I have a lot to offer in terms of how to follow trends and even be ahead of them. What does Missy offer? We offer a range of stunning clothes from Italy, fashion jewellery, bags, scarves and gift ideas, all at affordable prices. Who are your customers? Our customers are broad ranging. Ladies of all ages from sizes 12 to 22. Our customers prefer easy to wear layers that can be worn in the day through to evening. They have a keen eye for style and detail. What has been the feedback so far? I’m glad to say it’s been very positive. Having been in the business for a long time, I know that honesty is important. I never say that an outfit looks good if it doesn’t. The customer will only go away, not feel comfortable in the outfit and not visit my boutique again. I would rather offer honest advice. I also try and suggest outfits that take the customer away from her comfort zone, only because I feel that it would look good. Why Talbot Green? I see Talbot Green as an up and coming area. It also has the geographical advantage of being on the border of the Vale and the valleys. There is a large bus station not too far away so I’m seeing a lot of customers from the valleys as well as the local area and beyond. Talbot Green is literally a five minute drive from Junction 34 of the M4 so it’s very easy to get to by car. There’s also plenty of parking nearby.

As we’re now into the autumn, will you be offering boots? Yes, I’ve been asked this a lot. I’ve been on a buying trip recently and will be offering a range of boots without the hefty price tags. What about gift ideas? As our prices are within easy reach of most purses, there will be something to suit all budgets. We also have gift vouchers from £5 for those not quite sure of what to buy. Perfect for those Christmas gift dilemmas! 86 14

The South Wales Valleys has produced some great fighters over the years. They’re household names, but not many have also been world champions while studying for a degree at university. Valleys Life talks to Nathan Cleverly.

The Clever One When did you first start boxing? How old were you? I started boxing when I was eleven. I just had an instinct really, to fight. I was very competitive as a kid - got involved in a few street fights and I had an inclination to go to a boxing gym to start fighting. When I stepped into the boxing ring I could smell the leather and it gripped me straight away. That ‘Rocky’ feeling was awesome. What inspired you? It was just my background really. I was just a kid and wanted to do something with my life. There were no facilities in the area at the time - there’s not much more there now either, but I knew that I just wanted to achieve something because I was a sports fanatic and I had a talent for fighting. That’s what inspired me really. How did your parents feel about you getting into boxing? My Mam wouldn’t let me go to the gym for a few years. I was asking from a young age and eventually my Dad took me. That’s how it all began. Who was your boxing hero growing up? It would have to be Joe Calzaghe. Joe was world champion when I first went to the gym. He’s from similar surroundings in the Valleys - he was a big inspiration. I’ve always liked Oscar De La Hoya too, the American fighter. I remember seeing him when I was young and thinking ‘I love his style’, so he was another favourite.

What has been your most challenging opponent to date and why? Hardest opponent, umm… Mohameddi was the trickiest because I went in to the ring probably unfit. I had a bad training camp and that was a tricky night’s work - very awkward. Toughest fight? There’s a few, but Tony Oakey for the Commonwealth title would be up there. I was 21, my first twelve round fight. He chucked everything at me - he was a strong man and I could feel his strength. He made me work very, very hard. That was a tough night’s work.

“I started boxing when I was eleven. I just had an instinct really, to fight. I was very competitive.”

What attributes do you think a world class boxer should have? The ability to take a punch - to take a good shot - to be resilient. In boxing you’re going to get hit and how you respond to getting hit can make or break you. Some people crumble, some leave the sport, some get knocked out. If you can’t take punishment then it’s not a sport to hang around in you know? How important to you are your supporters, particularly those from your home country? It’s great and they give me a big boost. It makes me believe what I’m doing is very worthwhile. When you get the back-up from your fans, it inspires you and keeps you pushing because you don’t want to let them down, you want to keep proving them right, it’s definitely a big help.

At what point in your career did you think you could become a world class fighter? Before I put on a set of boxing gloves, I said I’d be world boxing champ believe it or not. I’d never chucked a pair of boxing gloves on in my life and I said I’m going to be world champion. I had that strong inner-belief from such a very young age.

“My favourite former Welsh fighter has to be Joe Calzaghe.” Who would you like to fight in the future? It would have to be Bernard Hopkins before he retires. With this next fight, we’ll make that fight happen before he gets out of the sport.

If you could change one thing about the sport, what would that be? Bring back an extra three rounds to make it fifteen.

What’s your best punch? I would say my right uppercut, I love that. That’s definitely one of my best shots, I feel comfortable throwing it and I’ve got a good success rate with that.

If you weren’t a professional boxer, what would you love to do? A professional football player was always a possibility, that was my second favourite sport. I’m really passionate about football, I enjoyed football when I was young, I suppose my heart was set on a career in sport.

Do you have a favourite Welsh boxer? My favourite former Welsh fighter has to be Joe. Current? Myself. How do you feel about the next fight? I feel good - mentally I feel well. Physically? I feel great. I’m ready to go. Training has all gone to plan. I’m ready for the biggest fight of my life.

What was your favourite fight? Probably, Brancalion for the European. I went in to the fight feeling ill - I was really tired but I had to go for it. I went for it and it turned out to be the best night of my life. I performed excellently and stopped him in five rounds to win the European title. At that point I was Commonwealth, British and European champion - that was special. What’s been your favourite fight to watch of all time? I would say myself versus Danny MacIntosh. When I watch that back on TV the atmosphere in York Hall was magical. It’s such a small arena and it’s just loud, a great atmosphere. There were a few words said before the fight and I went in there and smashed him to bits to become British champion while studying in university. I loved that fight. 89

Sum yourself up in three words... Intelligent. Relaxed. And I’ll go for… hard working... Oh, that’s four words! Three tips for up-and-coming boxers... Enjoy the sport, that’s very important. Fitness, make sure you’re fit. Stick to the basics. While Jon Pountney was working on a photography project in the Rhondda, he didn’t realise that a chance discovery would have such a huge impact in his life.

H iraeth A PHOTOGR APHIC LEGACY Harold Wilson in Ebbw Vale

After a conversation working in Cwmparc, Jon was introduced to a local photographers work that has inspired him to preserve and promote a huge collection of images of Valleys life. Jon tells us more… How did you come to be in possession of the photographs? I’ve been a professional photographer for thirteen years. I’m also a multi-discipline artist - I use video, painting, photography and sculpture to create my work. I was working on a personal photography project on the Valleys in my favourite locations Cwmparc and Treorchy. I got chatting to someone about photography and was told about a local photographer, David Thickins, who had worked in the area for many years. After a little detective work, I was very surprised to be united with his work in Treorchy Library.

David sadly passed away a couple of years ago. I’m still not sure whether he was an amateur or pro, as the quality of the work is so good. He lived in Cwmparc, but covered all of the Valleys. I’m still finding out information about him so if anyone has anything they’d like to share, I’d love to hear more. What time period do they cover? I reckon we are looking at 1963 to 1976. Interestingly the images start in medium format film, and then move into 35mm. The quality of the medium format negatives is particularly impressive. How many images are there?
I think we could be looking at more than 15,000!

“I’m keen for as many people as possible to see these pictures”

Why has this collection inspired you? The forensic detail and coverage of the area is extremely interesting. The work ethic behind such a large body of work is very inspiring, especially when you consider that David was working in film. Digital is so much easier these days. What are your aspirations for the collection? I’m keen for as many people as possible to see these pictures, in the way that the Vivian Maier archive has brought film photography to life for so many people. It’s a unique journal on a time of huge change in south Wales, as well as containing some spine-tinglingly good single pictures. Of all the images you have looked at so far, which is your favourite?
The lady holding a drawing of a UFO is exceptional I think. Are there any images that you find particularly moving? I have found a number of pictures of Aberfan that, so far, I haven’t had the heart to look at. Will there be an exhibition in the future? I hope to create a traveling show that will visit towns across the Valleys.

Ever since we were kids, the Sunday drive has been a tradition. Sometimes to the beach, sometimes to the country, and usually, for Sunday lunch.

Sumptuous Sunday Lunch Growing up, Sunday lunch was usually the flip of a coin between our nan’s house in Mountain Ash or a country pub. It’s a tradition that we’ve happily carried on as adults. If, like me, Sunday lunch is your thing, then you’ll probably enjoy discovering new places. The valleys has plenty of good eateries (and plenty of personal favourites) for ‘Sunday best’ but this time we’re travelling a little further afield - to Cowbridge, a mere half an hour drive from Caerphilly. Cowbridge is one of those places that people perceive to be further from the valleys than it actually is. It has several really good restaurants and they’re all very different - it’s true to say that Cowbridge is very popular with us valleys folk. Arboreal is delight on the eyes. It’s a mix of contempory design using lots of quirky accessories and recycled materials, it’s a welcome relief from the pseudo country pub interiors that are usually forced on us.

Arboreal is a quality offering. I’m a great believer in that you get what you pay for which, in this case, was superbly cooked food, beautifully presented. My wife’s rib-eye steak was beautifully cooked but the star of the show was my slow-cooked pork shoulder – apparently it had been cooked very slowly overnight and literally melted in my mouth. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by the way it cooks its vegetables and ours were perfect, especially the beautifully tender carrots and onions. Our lad enjoys a beef dinner but, on this occasion, he went for a perfectly cooked Margherita pizza. This was cooked in Arboreal’s famous open oven. Our desserts were simply superb. My wife’s chocolate brownie stack was rich and very chocolatey and, she informed me, “quite indulgent.” I chose the French classic - apple tarte tatin, and I’m very glad I did. This has to be one of the best I’ve had. The pastry just melted in the mouth and the home-made ice cream was creamy and silky.

“The pastry just melted in the mouth and the home-made ice cream was creamy and silky.” 103

Verdict? Fabulous food - good portion sizes. The wine was very good - service was excellent and top it off, all the herbs used are grown in Arboreal’s very own allotment. Arboreal delivered a great Sunday lunch experience, but not only is Arboreal a superb restaurant, it is also accustomed to hosting private parties and is an ideal music venue. We’ll certainly visit again in the near future.

Since taking on their first property in January 2013, Holiday Cottages now have a fantastic collection of properties across Wales. We recently caught up with Managing Director, James Morris, to hear more about their expanding portfolio.

Cottage Industry We also developed websites in both French and German for our overseas customers, to make finding the perfect cottage even easier! We have in-house marketing, design and web development teams working tirelessly to bring our customers and owners the very best experience, whether they are booking a holiday or letting a property. Last year we were awarded Best Accommodation Website by Travolution - our award-winning website received more than four million visitors last year, and our properties have a presence on many other websites which maximises exposure. Even though our portfolio and team has grown over the years, we still strive to maintain the family values that are at the heart of Holiday Cottages. What do you love most about Wales? I love the beautiful bays, the majestic mountains and, of course, the sweeping valleys. You have to love your work and I think it helps if we love the areas of the country we let in. Tell us a little bit about Holiday Cottages? We are a family run business and have been successfully letting properties across Wales and the South West’s popular holiday destinations for more than 35 years. Recently, we have expanded our portfolio across the rest of the UK, and currently have an expanding collection of over 1,500 holiday cottages. How are you expanding your Welsh portfolio? We have a dedicated Regional Manager for Wales, Emily, who travels all across Wales meeting with potential owners and works to build long-term relationships with our property owners. We invest a lot in promoting our properties and use a sophisticated, proven formula to promote them.

What can holidaymakers expect from a Welsh cottage holiday? Expect a warm welcome. You’ll soon fall in love with the local food and drink and ancient traditions just as much as the stunning landscape. Secondly, you will be guaranteed some spectacular sights. From the stunning beaches of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, to the emerald beauty of Wales’ three National Parks, and up in the white capped mountains of Snowdon, you’ll be blown away by the magnificent views. I always pack my sturdy walking boots so that I can get out and explore as much of this beautiful country at every opportunity. What sets you apart from other holiday cottage companies? We move with the times; technology is advancing at pace, and understanding the ways holidaymakers search for their cottage breaks has changed. Browsing with tablets and mobile phones is a much more user-friendly experience these days, and with this in mind, at the end of last year and early this year we launched our apps for both iPhone and Android.

“You’ll soon fall in love with the local food and drink and ancient traditions just as much as the stunning landscape.” 107

All of our properties are still personally inspected by a dedicated team of managers and we work hard to develop and nurture continuing relationships between the company and our property owners.

You wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that the infamous TV show Gavin and Stacey has made Barry Island a worldwide phenomenon but O’Shea’s Takeaway and Restaurant has been serving the finest fish and chips since 1946. Craig O’Shea, the third generation from the O’Shea family to run the takeaway tells us more...

O’SHEA’S How long have you been running O’Shea’s? I took over from my father when I was 28. I’m 41 now so that’s thirteen years. Did you have any choice in the matter? It’s a business with a huge family tradition. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. We’ve been on the island since 1946 and long may it continue. What makes O’Shea’s so special? We are lucky to have a view of an award winning beach, which I don’t think any business could better. We also pride ourselves on using the finest quality ingredients. We keep things really local. We get our fish from Snowdens, the best fishmongers in Cardiff, in my opinion. We use the best Maris Piper potatoes for our chips and we present our food in attractive presentation boxes. Only the best for our customers. We’re also very affordable – more affordable than Porthcawl and Tenby.

“We see more walkers, more young families and couples coming in after a stroll.”

Do you think we as a nation will always want good old fish and chips? Absolutely. Since my grandfather started the business just after the war, people flooded in. It was more of a treat then but I think with the credit crunch, people are going back to the simple things in life and getting there enjoyment by taking the kids to the beach, walking the dog and then stopping for some good, old fashioned feel good things, like fish and chips. We all know that the island gets crazy busy in the summer months but what about the rest of the year? Gavin and Stacey has put the island on the map and we do see more and more people visiting the island, and us, year on year, but we’re just as popular during the autumn, winter and spring months when things are quieter. We see more walkers, more young families and couples coming in after a stroll along the promenade or from visiting the beach head, Jacksons Bay, The Knap and Whitmore Bay. This area has so much to offer. Have you won any awards? We’re proud to say that we came second two years ago in the National Food and Drink Awards. We’ve entered again this year and the results will be announced in January. Fingers crossed. 109 43

What’s this I hear about a man-v-food challenge? It’s become very popular following the hit TV show. It’s open to anyone over 18 because of the heat involved in the dish. I can’t give away the recipe as that’s top secret but it’s a fusion of our very popular curry sauce and the very hot, very spicy Naga chilli. We haven’t had any women takers yet so I’m laying down the gauntlet here! What do customers request the most? Number one – definitely our fish and chips. Number two would be our Irish curry sauce and three would be our fresh bean coffee (our beans are from Castell Howell). You wouldn’t think we’d be strong on our coffee but customers love it. So you’re expecting big numbers this autumn/winter? Yes, it’s generally when the locals come. Half term is always very busy and bonfire night attracts a strong crowd as well. Of course the beach is dog friendly and we're a dog friendly cafe with 32 seats/covers outside. We stay open continuously throughout the winter with New Year's Day being very popular with a big charity swim. Barry Island has a lot to offer, not only superb fish and chips from O’Shea's but a beautiful setting for a winter's stroll, an alternative dog walk and a great place to wear the children out before treating them to some yummy fish and chips!

It was a sad loss to the town of Cowbridge when popular boutique Lois closed its doors but exciting times are ahead with the opening of a new boutique style shop. Retail General Manager for Tyˆ Hafan, Matt Williams tells us more.

EMPORIUM What is your role at Tyˆ Hafan? I manage the retail team and have responsibility for everything relating to the shops. We currently have 23 shops across South Wales, and a warehouse in Barry. The money that we raise from our shops is a key part of the income that must be generated for Tyˆ Hafan to provide care, comfort and support to life limited children and their families in Wales. We employ over 60 people in South Wales and offer volunteering opportunities to over 450 people through our shops.

What exciting news do you have to tell? I’m delighted to tell you that we are opening a new shop at 29 High Street, Cowbridge. This brand new shop will be known as the Tyˆ Hafan Emporium and will sell high quality branded goods. It will be Tyˆ Hafan’s first boutiquestyle shop and we are very pleased to be launching our new store in an area where we have supported a number of children and their families. We receive wonderful support from Cowbridge and the surrounding areas, we hope that this will continue and encourage people to visit our new shop once opened, have a browse and if possible donate their once loved item. Matt Williams and Sue Marshall, previous owner of Lois, at the hospice.

How will this differ from other shops of this kind? Emporium will sell a different mix of products, and have more of a boutique-style throughout (in the way it looks and in what we sell). We have some fantastic goods that will be on sale from the opening weekend onwards; including high-end branded clothing, shoes, bags, accessories and some elegant formalwear. The shop will also sell some great items for the home. Emporium will have a very different look and feel to our other 23 stores but the focus will be the same – to raise more funds to help support an increasing number of life-limited children and their families. How did Tyˆ Hafan come up with this concept? The concept has been in the planning stage for a little while but we have been looking for the right location to allow us to roll it out, I see Cowbridge as an ideal spot and expect the new Emporium shop to fit in well with the local community and with the current mix of shops on the High Street. 58 110

COWBRIDGE

Sue Marshall's poignant journey My son, Max, was born six weeks early and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. He was also registered deaf and blind. He died six years ago when he was eight years old. Tyˆ Hafan was a lifeline for our family. It became a second home and Max loved staying there. All the staff adored him and he was spoilt rotten by everyone at the hospice. Nothing compares to the feeling of losing your child, but having the support from such a caring team provided a much-needed source of strength at an incredibly difficult time. Tyˆ Hafan was there for me in so many ways, from helping with funeral arrangements to being on the other end of the phone whenever I needed someone to talk to. It is a fantastic charity and I can’t thank them enough for the help they gave to Max, Kurtis (my other son) and me. It’s unfortunate that we had to close Lois but I can’t think of a better organisation to take over the store. When I told my mum she burst out crying! I will always have a connection with Tyˆ Hafan and I was delighted to be asked to help with the opening of the new shop. Max and I used to spend a lot of time together at the shop and to see the new Tyˆ Hafan store will be a lovely tribute to remember him by. It was an incredible coincidence that Sue previously owned the shop and we are thrilled that she is so supportive of our new venture. Will Emporium be staffed by local people? Yes, we are in the final stages of recruiting the management team for the shop, and we are looking for local volunteers to help support us within the shop. We cannot survive without volunteers and there are plenty of opportunities for people to get involved, whether you can spare one hour or 30 hours per week - there are many different tasks available in the shop. If you are interested please pop in when the shop is open and have a chat about how you can get involved. We are also keen to develop our links with the local business community and other shop owners, and work together as we do in the communities of our other shops. We always look to support local events and have worked with many schools and other organisations across all of our other shops, Cowbridge has a great community spirit which we look forward to being involved with.

When will Emporium be opening its doors? The opening date is still to be confirmed but we are expecting it to be open towards the end of October, we have some work to do before we can open it but hope that it will be ready soon. Do you have a celebrity to cut the red ribbon? Yes, but it’s top secret! We will be communicating the plans for our opening weekend shortly to local businesses and Tyˆ Hafan supporters, you can also keep up to date with the plans on our Twitter (www.twitter.com/ tyhafan) and Facebook pages.

“Tyˆ Hafan was a lifeline for our family. It became a second home and Max loved staying there. All the staff adored him and he was spoilt rotten” 59 111

Everyone should support Tyˆ Hafan as it will make a difference to children and their families who rely on the service. I really don’t know what I would have done without Tyˆ Hafan and I really hope people will show their support by visiting the shop. People can also help by donating their goods or by volunteering. My family will be supporting the shop and I hope other people do too.

Ella, our newest recruit has toured Grande Britannia with top celebrity stylists like Lee Stafford, entering and winning top industry competitions throughout her career, but it’s not all about winning competitions and mixing with the stars for Ella. One of her passions is being involved in the Teen Body Confidence Workshops held throughout the summer, inspiring young girls and giving them the knowledge and confidence on how to take care of their hair and themselves.

What else have you introduced? We have recently launched an amazing new REDKEN Shape Control System that smoothes out unmanageable hair and straightens curls permanently. It does all this while improving the condition of the hair and giving a beautiful shine. We are also really pleased to tell you that we have a fully qualified nail technician in salon, offering manicures and Shellac nails. We have also recently introduced a brand new spray tanning system called Naturasun. It develops in less than four hours, so you can have it done in the morning, then wash it off in the afternoon for a beautiful and natural looking tan.

What’s been happening since we last caught up? I have become a "Redken Colour Genius" and have recently recruited one of the best stylists in the country, Ella. Ella and I have been chosen to create a signature look for 19 models at the catwalk show at Cardiff Fashion Week on 19th October. We will then lead other stylists from around Cardiff how to recreate our look. I have also been on a two day Redken course at the L'Oreal Studios in London, strengthening relationships with Redken and further enhancing my knowledge to pass on to Ella, Kirsty and Rachel.

We will also be having ladies coffee mornings where we will be teaching clients the tricks of the trade to do their own hair at home.

How have your customers responded to Ella? Our Clients love Ella. She has a natural talent for understanding what looks good on them. Its great seeing all the amazing feedback she gets from our customer on our facebook page.

What are her specialisms? Haircutting and styling, vintage hair up, total looks, weddings and party hair.

Introbiz Business Show 2013 kicks off in style If there was one event to go to this year, it was the Introbiz Business Show, held at Cardiff City Stadium. Over two floors, the event drew in huge crowds with guest speakers Hilary Devey CBE, Kevin Green and Daniel Priestley playing a big part in drawing the crowds. A glittering champagne reception and five course dinner was then held at the impressive Vale Hotel, with all monies from auction going to the Stroke Association. Next year’s event plans to be bigger and better so we hear. www.introbiz.co.uk

There aren’t many times we get to interview a designer that has celebrities on their books but Jo Buckerfield of Your Space Living, Llantwit Major can count a few as clients. We chat to Jo to find out about her passion for creating kitchens and living spaces that have the extra WOW factor.

the l ast Word Tell us a bit about what you do? I offer an interior design service, specialising in supplying and installing high quality kitchens, bedrooms, studies and living room furniture to homes in South Wales and other surrounding areas, with the added value of a full project management service. Where do you live and who is at home with you? I live in the beautiful, historic village of Llantwit Major, just a small walk from the design studio. I share my home with my husband, our daughter Eva May and son Joseph, along with our cat Bonnie. Describe your home? I love it. We completed our own kitchen project four years ago and still to this day the units look as good as the day they were installed. We removed two walls giving us our open plan family room that we dreamt of, where we can cook, dine and spend quality time together. I particularly love my Schuller kitchen and often show it to clients wanting a similar look. What makes Your Space Living different to others in your field? Four main things (1) clients receive “proper” professional design advice from a qualified furniture designer (2)value for money (3) a hands-on project design manager (me) who is on hand during the whole process and (4) an installation team with the same philosophy as myself – that of looking after the client.

Do your clients have their own ideas or do they leave things to you? I take on board how they live, how they cook and how they want things to evolve. Some have a scrapbook of ideas. My job is to turn those ideas into their dream space. What do you think a female beings to what is predominantly a male profession? I can redress the testosterone imbalance with a softer approach! Given my design flair and knowledge, I enjoy getting involved with the interior design process, from tiles to fabrics. Where do you shop? I love House Envy in Llantwit Major and The Shop in Cowbridge. I also like to call into Scallywags in Cowbridge to spoil the kids. What makes you happy? My family are my number one priority and my biggest supporters. What drives you mad? False sales – companies who over inflate their prices to make it look like they have a sale.

What is your background? I’ve always had a passion for creative arts, having studied various art courses, from A-levels to Diplomas to completing a Bachelor of Honours degree in furniture design in 2000. I was chosen to study for a while in Finland on a student exchange. Owning my own business was a natural progression. Where do your clients come from? All over South Wales and also Cheltenham, Oxford and London. They visit me here or I go to them. 90 120

Sum yourself up in three words Very hard working. You may not know this but... I designed kitchens for BBC’s popular presenter Lucy Owen from Cowbridge and the singing sensation, Connie Fisher from Barry.
