It’s been another incredible year for Alexander James of Swansea. As the company’s reputation has been growing, primarily, from its many happy customers. Mr and Mrs Lewis of Cowbridge are one of these and are now fully ensconced in their stunning new home. “Our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape.” “Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation.”

The High Street, with its many varied and interesting independent businesses, attracts visitors from near and far and it’s these customers, and the local traders of course, that keeps The Grind House busy.
THE GRIND HOUSE
Came here for ladies’ day afternoon tea with my mum. We loved it – amazing service, atmosphere and the sandwiches and cakes were delicious. Will definitely be recommending. Helen Rozel Molitika 5* Step through the doors of this gorgeous eatery and you immediately feel relaxed. Maybe it’s the décor, the smell of freshly brewed coffee or the welcoming smile? Or maybe it’s the thought of the scrumptious cooked breakfast (you must try the “Grind House Grinder”) that will set you up perfectly for a morning’s shopping? When lunchtime comes, there’s no better choice than The Grind House.
You could choose from freshly made paninis, jackets, salads, open sandwiches and baguettes or, for something a bit more substantial, why not try one of their homecooked lasagnes or a corned beef pie? The home-made cakes must be seen (and enjoyed), to be believed. Also proving popular is the café’s delicious Afternoon Tea – a perfect way to spend an afternoon. Whether it’s breakfast, a light lunch, afternoon tea or just a slice of cake and a coffee – make The Grind House your destination.
Amazing place. Excellent food and drink. Staff are lovely, cannot do enough for you. Highly recommend and definitely my new favourite place x Rachel Hills 5*

Gender Surprise baby balloon reveals are really popular at the moment, and we get such a thrill knowing the happiness our balloons bring to families. DAZ ENGLISH
THE JOURNEY OF A MUSICIAN Shortly before appearing at our very own Premier Club event, Gower Life spoke to Daz English about the journey that led to his career. “My love for music goes back as far as I can recall. My dad had always played in bands and, as I was growing up, I remember always watching him play. Then, when I was about 9, he began teaching me how to play the guitar. At the age of 10 I owned my first acoustic guitar, an instrument I never stopped playing. During school I would experiment with other musicians and, at home, I would play cassette albums of classic guitarists and play over the track, finding this easier than reading straight from the music sheet.
I was in a band until I was 16 where I joined the army. For the six years I was there my guitar came everywhere with me, even to Iraq in 2004 to help keep moral up in my squad. Returning home from the army led me to a job I disliked that took me away from my passion for music. So after leaving my job I began busking and playing Open Mic’s across Cardiff. Within a year I had played some wonderful gigs, and a good few festivals. From there my passion now keeps me busy every day. In addition to personal gigs, I also play at weddings, private parties, pubs, clubs and restaurants. I am also in the process of creating original songs ready for the release of my first EP.” 11

When Stephanie (Steph) Fitzpatrick and Jonathan (Jon) Fitzpatrick decided to get married in Italy, the dress and the suits had to had to be especially beautiful - the Welsh equivalent of Italian style.
BELLISSIMA! Where do you currently live? We live in Pontcanna. We really love it here.
Jon ushered me around the site trying to get away from the smell and unbeknown to me, to find a more romantic spot. As we were taking some photos, he took out the ring and asked me to marry him. It was amazing as a harpist that was nearby started playing the theme tune from Titanic! He admits he didn’t plan that, it was complete serendipity, but it made it even more memorable and so romantic. Needless to say, I accepted!
How and where did you both meet? We met at work. We were colleagues in a law firm in Cardiff. We were just friends for a few years as we were both in relationships at the time - but once they both ended, we soon realised that what we felt for each other was much more than friendship, and we have been together ever since!
Where did your engagement ring come from? We bought it from David Edwards, Royal Arcade in Cardiff. I spotted it in the window as I was looking for a vintage style ring and it had a gorgeous baguette cut diamond. We went in and, to my surprise, it fitted perfectly and we walked out with it that day.
How did Jon propose? He proposed in Paris in the springtime! It was a complete surprise. He booked the trip to Paris for my birthday in April 2016, and I didn’t know where we were going until we arrived at Cardiff Airport. The following day he suggested visiting the Sacre Coeur in the morning. When we arrived, there were lots of tourists and a very strange smell of manure!
Where and when did you marry? We were married in San Galgano Abbey, Chuisdino (near Siena) in Tuscany on 17th June 2016. We had visited the Abbey and had stayed in the nearby hotel, Borgo Santo Pietro, previously. We had looked at a few hotels in the area where we could host the wedding party, but we fell in love with the Borgo as it is the most magical and romantic hotel imaginable.
Steph is currently studying for her Masters Degree in Management and Leadership, and Jon is a retired solicitor who is currently a co-owner (together with his son Alex and his friend Stuart) of a successful craft beer and bottle shop called Ghost Whale, based in Brixton, London.
12
It was the perfect venue to celebrate our wedding day with all our loved ones. The Abbey itself, where the actual ceremony took place, is a roofless 13th Century Gothic building similar to our own Tintern Abbey but a lot hotter! We had the exclusive use of the hotel for the weekend, and our party of thirty-four consisted of family and friends. We wish we could have invited more guests, but we filled the hotel as it was - although those that couldn’t be with us in Italy did join the celebrations at a wonderful party held at St David’s hotel in Cardiff Bay a week later.
I had two Maids of Honour - my sisterin-law (Michelle) and Jon’s daughter (Caitie). Jon had three Best Men(!) - his son (Alex), his brother (Jim) and one of his best mates (Charlie Stephanakis). Caitie’s boyfriend (Jordan) was the Usher. I was given away by her father (Neil) and her brother (Jamie). What made you choose Hawkes? Jon has been a customer of Hawkes for so long that he can’t remember when he first went to the shop! He feels more of a friend of Russ and the team rather than just a customer.
He gets virtually all his clothes there, as he really appreciates the unique style and quality of the range of clothes and footwear on offer, as well as the awesome professionalism and service of Russell and his colleagues. They will never sell you something just to get a sale, but will ensure that anything that you do buy will make you look and feel your best - and will tailor anything off-the-peg to ensure just that. It’s amazing the confidence boost you can get from wearing the right clothes for the right occasion. Hawkes know that implicitly and take great pride in working with their customers (many of whom have become friends) to achieve that outcome. Hawkes is the beacon of style, often with a witty twist, in Cardiff as far as menswear is concerned. What did Hawkes provide for you? Because of the longstanding nature of our relationship, as customer and friend, Russell made the incredibly generous gesture of supplying Jon with a bespoke tailored suit as a wedding gift. Russell’s gesture was totally unexpected but very typical of him, and very gratefully received. The suit was a beautiful, lightweight blue affair - perfect for Tuscany in June. Hawkes also provided the rest of Jon’s outfit from top to tail.
Hawkes also supplied suits, shirts, ties, belts, socks and shoes for the three Best Men, Usher, Father of the Bride, and brother of the Bride. The groomsmen’ suits were a slightly darker shade of blue compared to Jon’s suit, but they complemented it perfectly. The only item of clothes that we had to supply was our underpants! Even if we say so ourselves, they looked pretty awesome! Even though we were getting married in Italy, the home of fashion, we made a statement - Welshmen do it in style!
“ He proposed in Paris in the springtime!” Who designed your dress? My dress was designed by Laure de Sagazan, Paris. I wanted a relaxed fit as it can be so hot in Italy in June and the setting deserved something simple but beautiful. The dress was a silk crepe empire line gown with a French Lace bodice and was bought from The Mews Bridal Shop in Clifton. My shoes were Charlotte Olympia which I bought from theOutnet.com and my headpiece was a beautiful pearl and copper vine from Modiste Accessories. Caitie wore a beautiful blush tulle dress from Debenhams and Michelle a lace top and blush tulle skirt from BHLDN. 13
Was the process of working with Russell at Hawkes a pleasurable one? It always is! It was a real collaborative affair - Jon and I working together with Russell to design Jon’s suit. We decided on the style, cut and weight of the suit, colour of the cloth, linings, buttons, pockets - everything. We then went on to consider the best shirt (Eton cutaway collar), tie and shoes to complement the outfit. Jon loves the Jeffrey West shoe brand that Hawkes supplies, so it had to be a pair of Jeffrey’s for the day. We then proceeded to choose the groomsmen’ suits and accessories with Russell, aided and abetted by Ross and Huw and the team. The boys were all shod in Jeffrey West shoes too! Did you think of going anywhere else for your suits? Absolutely not! It never crossed Jon’s mind to go anywhere but Hawkes for such a special day. How long did the process take? Given that Jon’s suit was bespoke, the process took seven weeks from the initial consultation to the final fitting. All the groomsmen had to visit the shop to have their suits tailored too and to be kitted out. However, it was an enjoyable process from first to last.
Describe your wedding day. Our wedding day was everything we had hoped it would be - romantic, magical and intimate; a day for everyone we love to share memories and joy. We had booked the exclusive use of the hotel for the weekend, so all our guests arrived by the Friday. The Lions were playing on the Saturday morning of the wedding, so our wedding planner had arranged for a large screen to be put up in the hotel bar for us - and both sets of family and friends gathered round the screen to watch the game to kick off the big day. After that our guests were able to relax around the pool or at the spa as the ceremony took place at 3.30pm at the nearby Abbey. Guests were transported to the Abbey, where we had an open air civil ceremony hosted by the local Mayor, I was serenaded by two classical guitarists down the aisle in the abbey. My dad and my brother walked me down the aisle to meet Jon, with Michelle and Caitie walking in front of us. After the ceremony, we went back to the Borgo for cocktails in the water gardens and then onto the wedding breakfast on the lawn. Everyone sat at one long communal table, Italian style, with the nearby trees strung with fairy lights. It was such a beautiful setting.
The five-course menu was designed in collaboration with Chef Andrea Mattea, a Michelin starred chef based at the hotel, and it was absolutely delicious. We drank local wines and after Jon and the three Best Men had given their speeches (aka abused Jon royally!), and Steph’s dad had performed a surprise serenade of “Stephanie” on his ukulele during his speech; Jon and I led the guests to the hotel lake as dusk fell. There we cut the cake and gave a toast. Then the sky exploded as the guests were treated to stunning and unexpected fireworks display. After that the dancing started. We had an open-air dancefloor covered in fairy lights set up in the bistro area of the hotel, near the pool, where we danced and partied until the early hours. It was a wonderful day in a truly wonderful setting. Where did you go for your honeymoon? We did arrive at the Borgo Santo Pietro on the Monday before the Saturday wedding, and were joined by our close family a couple of days later; so, we had a bit of a communal pre-honeymoon break with our nearest and dearest in Tuscany before we wed. 14
As we were away for our wedding day, we wanted to be able to share our happy day with those of our extended family and friends who’d been unable to join us in Italy, so we held a party at St David’s Hotel back in Cardiff the following Saturday evening. We had a slideshow playing in the party suite with our photographs of the day in Italy. We cut another cake and had our first dance in front of over 150 friends and family. We left for Southern Ireland later that week and hired a secluded, coastal cottage in Ballydehob in West Cork, where we could spend time relaxing, walking and enjoying the beautiful southern Irish countryside. A few days after returning we left again for a five-day break in Wissant, near Calais, France with my mum and dad and my brother and his family (as they live in Los Angeles) to celebrate my parents’ 70th birthdays. Where can you spend it? There are more than 50 shops, cafés, restaurants and experiences signed up. WOODEN TOPS
FURNITURE
Ann Lerway of Bridgend was a big fan of her beautiful hand-made kitchen but, as it was over 12 years old, it was in need of a bit of a makeover.
Ann had visited Wooden Tops of Bridgend some months previously so knew immediately who she needed to talk to to bring her existing kitchen back to life. We chatted to Ann over a cup of coffee to find out more. How did you know about Wooden Tops? I first visited Wooden Tops around 9 months ago with my daughter and son -in-law. They had been told about the company by one of their friends. I loved the concept immediately. Did you ask anyone else for quotes? I didn’t look around for any other quotes because, to be quite honest, I wasn’t aware of anyone else locally who was offering this service.
What work did Wooden Tops carry out for you? They carried out a complete redecoration of my existing wooden kitchen units. Why did you choose a refurbishment rather than a new kitchen? I chose to have the kitchen refurbished because my kitchen was hand-made and was excellent quality. The kitchen was installed over 12 years ago and was hand painted once the installation was completed. The whole idea of having the units made in wood (and hand painted) was that I could change the look of the kitchen at a brush stroke!
“They carried out a complete redecoration.” 20
Did you know what you wanted or did Wooden Tops come up with ideas? I knew exactly what I wanted and didn’t want but I had sound advice and what type of final finish would be the most hard wearing in a kitchen. My work surfaces are granite, so I didn’t want too much of a sheen on the wooden units. After a discussion with Mathew, we agreed that the best way forward was to coat the sprayed/ painted units with the mid sheen (which would make the units water proof) and then finish with a matt sealant. This has resulted in the units having a finish that is very subtle. We also agreed that the wooden door knobs (which were originally wood) would be painted in the mid sheen rather than matt.
This was a good decision as the knobs now catch the light and have added another dimension to the finished units.
“ Professional and hard-working” How did you find working with the company? Mathew and Sophia were very professional and did everything possible to make the process easy - as we all know, having work done in a kitchen can be a nightmare! Mathew cleaned up after every visit, but he wasn’t a messy worker anyway. Everything he did was organised and, more importantly, I was encouraged to contact him if there were any issues that needed resolving.
What difference has the work done made to the way you now view and use your kitchen? I have always liked my kitchen - it isn’t a particularly large space but was designed well so I didn’t feel that the layout needed to be changed in anyway. The original colours were a light duck egg blue and cream but now the dresser is “scotch mist” and the other units are “ivory” - a gorgeous combination! Would you be happy to recommend Wooden Tops and Matthew and Sophia to others? I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Wooden Tops. Mathew and Sophia are a lovely, professional and hard-working young couple and I wish them good luck in this new area of their offering. 21

Financial Planning can be a minefield. With so many companies offering their services, who do you choose? Welsh Life spoke with Annie Grove-White to find out why she chose to work with Magenta Financial Planning.
M AGENTA DIVINE
Julie Lord and Gretchen Betts
Who are you and what do you do? My name is Annie Grove-White and I’m 65. I live in Cardiff and until about five years ago I was a Principal lecturer at Cardiff School of Art & Design. How did you hear about Magenta Financial Planning? A friend of mine told me about Julie Lord and the kind of work she did. At the time, I was on a monthly salary and it worked to have that come in regularly, and I didn’t have any debts or anything. But I really wasn’t very clear about many things, particularly the future. Why did you first seek financial planning advice and what made you choose Magenta? Both my parents had passed away and I was left some money and I remember some bits of paper coming through the post talking about twenty shares in Next and thirty shares somewhere else and I thought “What is all this about? I’ve got no idea!”, so I contacted Julie for a first appointment. Were you concerned about costs and did you compare with others? Not really, I just wanted to find out what to do with these things that came through the post every now and again! I was interested in the questions she asked me - not just about sorting out my current situation but also about my life, my dreams, what I loved doing and wanted to do.
Julie went through the incomplete paperwork I had brought and saw that I’d been mis-sold a pension scheme and advised me what to do (which I did immediately) and had a refund of £10,000 which was invested back in the scheme (I couldn’t take the cash). And I left that meeting thinking ‘This is someone I trust - who wants me to live a life I love’, and that is why, if anyone asks me about financial things or something they are dealing with such as divorce, retirement or redundancy, I recommend Magenta, and they follow up if they want to. Who do you work with there? I worked with Julie for the first few years and more recently with Gretchen. Both are great, as is Mandy and the rest of the team. Before taking voluntary redundancy, I set up additional meetings to go through different scenarios and I appreciated the straightness and creativity that they brought, along with reality. What services do they provide to you? I usually have an annual meeting where we review what I want to accomplish and do each year, as well as in the future. We then formally agree a set of actions (based on the ‘willingness to take risk assessment’ which I do annually). They then implement the actions on my behalf - and I’m clear that I can call on them any time, should I need to, as I did a few years ago. 22
Are you happy with the service? Absolutely! It’s friendly, straight, committed, reliable and lively! What difference has this made to your life? It’s made a massive difference! I am confident that I can live a full life now and in the future and that my money works for me and my family. So, I have peace of mind and can get on with the things I love to do and be! And the icing on the cake is that they are all amazing, fun people and I really look forward to spending time with them! Would you be happy to recommend Magenta to others? I do - all the time! Many friends have consulted Magenta.

Technology is changing fast in the medical world, especially in the MRI scanning sector.
EUROPEAN
The European Scanning Centre looks more like a boutique hotel than a medical centre. We met with manager Melanie to find out more.
He has a large clinical practice which has given him considerable insight into the needs of referring clinicians ensuring the ESC delivers a first class imaging service.
Please tell us about the facility... The facility in Cardiff comprises of a new Open and Upright MRI Scanner, the only one of its type in Wales. n The scanner is completely open above and to the front and rear, thereby avoiding claustrophobia. n Patients can be scanned in their position of pain whether it is sitting, standing, bending or lying down. n Extra wide space ensures larger patients feel comfortable and relaxed during the scan.
Please tell us about the ESC team... Melanie is Centre Manager along with two Radiographers (Carol-Ann and Ria). The Reception staff are Lisa and Nicola.
How long has the European Scanning Centre been in operation? Since 2003. The ESC has developed a reputation for providing a high quality and professional imaging service. Dr Paul Jenkins MA MD FRCP is the Medical Director of European Scanning Centre and also a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist. He graduated from Cambridge University and The Royal London Hospital before undertaking specialist training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
The Radiographers have many years experience of working in MRI scanners across South Wales - both in the NHS and private sector. Melanie previously worked in the Open MRI scanner, which was in the same premises as European Scanning Centre, for over fifteen years. Tell us about the ambience and interior décor of the centre... The Centre has been carefully designed with patient comfort at the forefront with a warm and welcoming reception area and staff who have been specially chosen for their ability to put patients at ease. We have invested in a five star environment where the emphasis is on patient comfort & relaxation. Whilst being scanned, patients are able to watch television, listen to the radio or are welcome to bring in their music of choice. 26
Two way audio facilities allow our radiographers to communicate and reassure patients during their scan and the viewing window ensures that both the patient and the radiographer are always in the line of vision.
How does the scanner work? The scanner is a large super conducting magnet - it is the only superconductive MRI scanner that enables fully open and upright imaging of the spine and joints, allowing patients to be scanned in a non claustrophobic and full weight bearing position. Imaging in the sitting or standing position can provide a more accurate diagnosis thus improving overall patient outcome. It is a more patient friendly scanner than the usual tunnel scanners - so more suited to patients who are anxious, claustrophobic or are unable to lie down. How much does the scanner cost? The refurbishment of the centre and new scanner has cost almost £2m. It’s a considerable investment but worth every penny as the benefits to patients’ wellbeing are well worth it.
SCANNING CENTRE Why do patients choose the scanner? The scanner is U shaped so is open above the patient unlike closed MRI scanners thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.
How long does the scan take? Each part we scan takes approx thirty minutes but we allow more time for the appointment so that patients can get comfortable in the scan room.
Do I need a doctor’s referral? Ideally it is better to be referred for a scan by your GP, a consultant, physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath. However we do accept self referrals for certain scans.
Where do your patients come from? The majority of our patients come from all over Wales and the West Country as there are very few of these scanners in operation. But we have also scanned patients from overseas including Ireland and the Middle East.
How quickly are results generated? We aim to get the results back to the referrer within forty-eight hours. How many patients can you see? It depends on the part of the body and how many areas we need to examine. We tailor appointments to suit the needs of the patient as some patients have specific mobility issues or other needs that need extra time. We don’t want to rush our patients as many need more time for the examination than the standard closed MRI scanner due to claustrophobia or mobility issues.
How do your fees compare? The ESC is recognised by all the major insurers. We aim to be as competitive as possible in our pricing and do not seek to charge a premium for the specialist services we offer. The self pay cost depends on the number of areas being scanned - however our prices are competitive to other open MRI scanners. We don’t profess to be a provider of “conveyor belt scanning” as we tailor our service to provide the extra time and support for patients to be able complete their scan.
“The scanner is U shaped so is open above... thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.” 27

THE SAUSAGE REVOLUTION
A revolution has arrived - and it’s sausage shaped! The brains behind Hot Diggidy Dog, Simon Llewellyn, has opened a brand-new sausage restaurant and takeaway, offering quality, Welshgrown hotdogs at fast food prices and speed.
Dragons Den contestant Simon came up with the idea for The Sausage Revolution after realising that the high street was crowded with chicken, burgers and pizzas - but no sausages! Customers start by choosing their preferred sausage style - from plain through to Italian, to then selecting their meat type - chicken, beef or lamb, before picking a side dish. Children will also be catered for with chuggets - small chicken sausages, which are essentially Simon’s sausage version of chicken nuggets.

After discovering that he was soon to become a father, the Cardiff born chef-tobe dedicated himself to self-learning how to cook. Although his pitch to the Den was rejected nine years ago, ironically, he now supplies Peter Jones with his meat infusion sauces. So, what are Simon’s plans for the future? They include evening openings with a bar, a drive-through service in Barry and a restaurant opening in Cardiff before taking over the rest of the UK.
Vegetarians and gluten intolerant diners are also well catered for with several tasty options on offer. Prices range from £2.99 to £3.99 for a hot dog, and visitors can choose whether to sit in or take their food away. There’s even a breakfast hot dog for early birds? They say from little acorns mighty oaks grow and that certainly can be said for Aspirations UK. We chatted to husband and wife team Debbie and Glyn, owners of the business to find out about their journey.
ASPIRATIONS UK
How did it all start? It all started in November 2014 at a flea market in Cardiff with one stall, but within six months, we had three stalls as we outgrew the space and needed somewhere bigger. We found a shop in Vere Street, Barry but unfortunately, this wasn’t big enough for us, so we re-located to High Street, Barry. Debbie started painting furniture 20 years ago for personal use and would often pick a brush up to transform a piece of furniture. Having worked in offices and had her own business, painting furniture is where she was happiest. Since becoming a Frenchic Stockist in February 2015, a paint brush never left her hand.
Glyn worked in Cardiff for many years and could never understand her love of painting until he had a go at Frenchic himself and became hooked. Due to the hours that you have to put in to run a business, they made the decision that Glyn would have to give up his job so that they could work full-time together. Why did you set up Aspirations UK? My house was full of furniture to paint so hence the reason to take a stall on and see how things went. We were very lucky that items were selling and couldn’t keep up with the demand. We’ve been extremely lucky that our customers have followed us from the market to high street and they come from all over south Wales and beyond. 32
We have new retro/industrial furniture which is selling extremely well. We are excited with this new supplier as there isn’t anything like it in Barry. As a business, we do try to be as exclusive as we can and customers seem to love that - that’s why they keep coming back. What do you offer your customers? We stock Frenchic chalk and mineral paint, painted and unpainted furniture and home accessories. We also offer commission work where we will paint your furniture. This is extremely popular and we are always booked up. Our customers have come from all over south Wales to transform their furniture and the feedback is always outstanding.
We offer painting classes which are popular and we are the only company in Barry and surrounding areas that offer these. It’s a really nice way to spend a few hours with friends and for them to go home with a piece of furniture completely transformed. We will show you the different techniques to painting, decoupage, stencilling and crackle glazing. We have also been booked to do children’s parties as Frenchic is non-toxic which is safe to use around children and pets. What makes Aspirations UK special? The reason Aspirations is special is because we are honest and enthusiastic about what we do and this shows in our work and feedback from customers.
We’ve been known to put the kettle on for our customers as they often come in for advice and a chat. We will go the extra mile to help anyone and I’m often answering messages late into the evening because someone needed advice on what they are painting. If we can help in anyway, we will. Any news to report? Frenchic brought out a brand new washable matt wall paint which is available in 10 colours with trim paint to match woodwork and radiators.
“ We have new retro/ industrial furniture.” 33
We also now offer a Home Design Service where we will have a team of painters and decorators to transform your home and, if customers would like us to commission us to paint their furniture to complement their new walls, then we can accommodate that. This is another venture for us and we are looking forward to it. Aspirations 104 High Street, Barry CF62 7DZ 01446 732778 / 07742 325 440 www.aspirationsuk.co.uk
Boasting one of the largest showrooms in South Wales, Enterprise2000 is an independent outlet specialising in kitchens, appliances and most recently, fitted bedrooms. With the company having gone from strength to strength over the last few years, we recently met up with their on-hand Kitchen Designer, Emma Reed to find out more.
ENTERPRISE 2000 LOCAL, PREMIUM & INDEPENDENT
Award winning - Emma Reed
Linear handleless units
Established over 20 years ago, Enterprise2000 was bought out by the current three partners who have been running the business for 14 years; they were the ones who saw an opportunity to invest in a fitted kitchen department to run alongside the kitchen appliance side of the business. Although discussing business, when talking to Emma, you can feel her passion for what she does and why she does it. The mantra on which they run the company is quality at affordable prices to give people the kitchen of their dreams, and this goal is almost palpable in everything that we talked about. Why choose Enterprise2000? When asked what makes them unique, Emma lit up with enthusiasm. Her answer was three-fold: premium quality products at affordable prices, a dedicated team of knowledgeable experts, and their firstclass customer service and after sales care.
“ Quality at affordable prices.”
Affordable Quality Working with other local companies, Enterprise2000 is able to obtain highquality products for their kitchen and bedroom ranges, as opposed to multi-nationals who are limited to what they can purchase. We stock and supply top brand appliances which are competitively priced and matched with online companies including AO.com, John Lewis and Currys. This allows Emma to get the best products and bargains for her customers. A Knowledgeable Team Made up of a dedicated team of experts, Enterprise2000 is regularly complimented on their knowledgeable and friendly staff. In fact, it is one of the reasons that the company gets referred so much and attracts customers in their droves. Emma says, “we believe the strength of any business is with its staff and we are so lucky with ours! Not only are they local and have been with us for years, but they also attend regular training with suppliers so they know everything about the appliances and they keep up with current trends. We couldn’t ask for more!” 34
Superb Customer Care Most multi-national companies have an online call centre with customer service teams, but with Enterprise2000, you will deal with one of the key team members directly to get your potential issue resolved. Emma prides herself on her customer care, stating that they offer above and beyond service from the initial conversation right up to after sales care. In fact, she said that customers always comment on how easy it is to work with Enterprise and how much they love that they can order appliances at home online and have it turn up when expected without being damaged or faulty. Enterprise2000: The Kitchens With one of the largest showrooms in South Wales, it’s hard to imagine that Emma was teaching herself kitchen design just eight years ago. It’s true, however, and with her partners, she has since built the business into the success it is today where the majority of her work comes from referrals. As humbling as she finds this, the sheer amount of referrals reflect just how unique and first-hand the service at Enterprise is.

Testimonials “Great Ideas” Re-designed our kitchen with the best expertise and ideas from the wonderful and patience of Emma. Great ideas with types of appliances and first-class prices. Follow up assistance and support always readily available. Roy
“ We believe the strength of any business is with its staff and we are lucky with ours.”
“First Class Service” Amazing kitchen bought by my in-laws. First class service from start to finish. No hesitation in recommending Emma and her team. Thank you. Lisa Cranbrook Platinum
While it is common in the kitchen industry for staff to work on a commission basis, pushing their kitchens at higher prices to earn a higher commission, Emma’s philosophy is completely different: “I work with whatever the client’s budget allows, offering a better quality kitchen than most other suppliers in our area to help their dream become a reality.” Offering a full range of premium quality kitchens and high-end appliances, Enterprise2000 works directly with other independent companies, such as Symphony Kitchens, the UK’s leading manufacturer, and the Cosentino Group, the design leaders in surfaces with its brands, Silestone, Dekton and Sensa. This means that they can offer the best for their clients, with each kitchen being built new using premium products and new premium-quality quartz work surfaces are available up to six months before any other showroom. Enterprise2000: The Bedrooms Emma was incredibly proud and excited about Enterprise’s recent launch of newly fitted bedroom displays in their
showroom; customers can now see the modern Symphony Urbano Range in all its glory alongside the elegant and stunning Laura Ashley Collection. As you can imagine, the news of the new Laura Ashley bedroom ranges are spreading and they are already extremely popular just a few months into their launch. Obviously, this excitement is due to the exceptional products themselves, but it may also be due to the massive social media giveaway where someone won a dressing table worth up to £1,500! Again, Enterprise works alongside other well-esteemed local companies such as The Rocking Chair that supply the beds for the displays and designer Elizabeth Styles for the fabrics. Emma prides herself on this, stating that “we love working with other independent retailers to offer the whole package to suit our clients’ needs and requirements.” From our discussion with Emma, we could see that Enterprise2000 is much more than a local company that offers high-quality kitchens, appliances and 35
bedrooms at great prices. Made up of a dedicated team of experts, Enterprise aims to work with their clients on their design journey from dream to reality, helping them to make the right decisions for them. Meeting Emma herself and talking about her exceptional customer service and intimate partnerships with other local companies, it is no surprise at all that she won Business Woman of the Year recently for growth expansion. We couldn’t think of someone who deserves it more and it is a testament to her incredible work ethic.

Spring is now officially here, so it’s with a spring in my step that I make my way to Bryl’s Boutique on Barry’s High Street. As soon as I walk through the door my senses are hit with a wash of vibrant, bright colours and immediately my spirits are lifted.
BRYL’S BOUTIQUE
Now truly a family run business, Ann and her two daughters Natasha and Lousha all greet me with a welcoming hello and a friendly smile as they talk me through their new collections. I quickly become as excited as they are and I can’t wait to look around! So what can we expect from Bryl’s this spring? As always, there’s a great mix of faithful Bryl’s Boutique brands including Ted Baker, French Connection, Great Plains, Masai, Sandwich, Joules and Fee G. With the range of brands it quickly becomes apparent that Bryl’s has it covered- from vibrant bright colours to the more traditional navy and white, from casual everyday items to occasionwear.
Even the footwear and accessories seem to have all bases covered. It seems that whatever the style, the age and the budget- there really is something for everyone. The Bryl’s are excited about their new brands As well as the trusty old faithfuls, Ann, Lousha and Natasha are evidently excited about the new brands they have for this season. Rant & Rave is the first that they rave about. They explain that it ticks the box for the customer that wants to wear “jeans and a nice top” (isn’t that all of us!). I can immediately see the appeal as the tops are different to anything on the high street and the prices range between an affordable £3555. Neon Star Fish is another newbie, which is a gorgeous high summer brand 36
from Dubai that is all about brightly coloured dresses and kaftans with pom pom and tassel trims. Perfect to wear over bikinis, jeans or with a pair of the boutique’s infamous Solillas! Last but not least, Religion is back! It was a favourite when the boutique first opened 11 years ago but now it’s back and better than ever before! What about accessories and footwear? It seems that this is another area of the business that’s grown too! Accessories are offered by Ted Baker, French Connection and a new Italian brand called Marlon Firenze. As for footwear- there’s Ugg, Fitflop and Solillas- all of which offer style and comfort.
And Jewellery? Ted Baker produces a gorgeous range of jewellery that comes in beautiful gift packaging and has an affordable price tag. The boutique has also sourced a new range, Envy, which is already a great hit with the customers. So what keeps Bryl’s at the top of their game? Ann, Lousha and Natasha always have a fantastic range of quality brands that customers rely on but also love to introduce new, exclusive, boutique only brands to keep things unique and on trend. Prices are competitive and they really enjoy getting to know their customers, what they like and what suits their body shape.
There is also the fact that customers get the quality offered by the big brands but with the personal advice and service that is not available when shopping in department stores or online. The Bryls’ love for their job and their business is definitely also a factor in the boutique’s success and with their passion for fashion - it’s no wonder that this family treasure is going from strength to strength!

There’s great news for Barry’s High Street! Miss Holmes is moving to larger premises and taken over the old Post Office building. Not only that but she’s devoting the whole of the upstairs to house a full range of gorgeous Cath Kidston products. We caught up with owner Nicola Petersen to find out more.
MISS HOLMES
Congratulation on the move! What will the new shop be offering? Miss Holmes is a boutique gift shop offering a selection of unique jewellery, branded gifts and self- indulgent lifestyle pieces. We’ve been on the High Street since 2009. For those of you who remember 2009, we were in the grip of a recession. Then we hit a double dip the following year, but we are still here and growing strong nine years on! What brands do you stock? We’ve got something here for everyone and to suit every budget. We are lucky enough to be stocking award-winning jewellery Annie Haak (which features in You & Your Wedding and Hello Magazine). We also stock Qudo, an interchangeable and stacking affordable jewellery brand, bursting with colour, made with Swarovski crystals. These items are selected for their individuality and personal combinations and can be bought from as little as £20.
Joma Jewellery truly makes a great gift from just £15. We house a large selection of rhodium plated bracelets to suit all occasions, including wedding, birthday, baby shower, anniversary and more. Also, Joma has introduced A Little Joma girls range - just like mums. They start from age three and are beautifully gift boxed. Katie Loxton Is also another lifestyle brand sourced for their gifting and fashion pieces. The latest clutches, handbags, scarves and candles all come beautifully gift wrapped, ready to gift. As well as a good selection of home fragrances from Ashleigh & Burwood and Woodwick, we also offer beautiful cards and sentiment gifts. How many people make up Miss Holmes? We are now a team of five. Myself, Joanne, or better known as Tinkerbell(!), 38
has been with us for many years and is responsible for visual merchandising. Andrea who has been with us for over a twelve month now, Andrea is front of house and manages all of our customer orders and requests. We have just recruited another two ladies in readiness for our move. Wendy, is on hand to advise and assist most Saturdays and Mica is our in-house ‘Social Media Platform Executive’, Keeping our customers up-to-date on the latest trends, deliveries and promotions. We all work closely assisting one another and run a well-oiled ship. We’re a great team. Tell us about your exciting news. We are beyond excited! Last spring, I received an email from a well-known brand asking if we would collaborate with them. If I’m honest, I thought it was a wind up as it’s not normally the way these things work!
After doing my research, I found this to be correct. An invitation to collaborate with Cath Kidston! After careful consideration, we purchased bigger premises to accommodate the growth of the business and accepted the invitation offered. We are now in the process of renovation and hope to launch in our new premises after the Easter holidays - sometime in April 2018. There’ll be updates on our Facebook page about the exact opening date.
“ We also offer beautiful cards and sentiment gifts.” What do you think will be your top sellers this spring? We expect our brand new panatone colour inspired Qudo gem toppers to be our “must have” fashion accessory they are good enough to eat!
Our new collection of Katie Loxton has exceeded our expectation with new additions for wedding and bridal purchases, baby showers and holiday essentials coming out on top. Not forgetting the collaboration with Cath Kidston; the home of modern vintage which has now widened its market, incorporating additional prints that would appeal to all. What do you think brings customers to Miss Holmes time and time again? Our customers tell us that we offer superb customer service, personal shopping advice and, of course, our gift-wrapping service. Every customer gets five-star service if they’re spending £5 or just browsing. Our stock changes regularly and, of course, our wrapping service. I am fanatical about packaging and presentation and believe it’s a huge part of giving and receiving! 39
“ We are now in the process of renovation and hope to launch in our new premises after the Easter holidays - sometime in April 2018.” And woe betide if we forget to spray your purchase with our signature fragrance! Customers love it! Going the extra mile has always been our USP from day one. Miss Holmes 18 High Street Barry 01446 732456 www.missholmes.co.uk

Jakub Wiatr, Hearing Health Specialist at Malmo Hearing, along with Patrycja Szczesniak, Office Manager, recently attended the bi-annual Hearing Expo 2018, hosted by Starkey Technologies, in Las Vegas. We caught up with Jakub to find out more.
M ALMO HEARING
Jakub and Patrycja with the owner of Starkey Hearing technologies William Austin
Who are Starkey Technologies? They are the world’s only independent hearing aid manufacturers. Formed by owner and president, Mr Bill Austin, they never stop working on new and innovative ways to improve the quality of lives for hearing impaired people. How was the event? We travelled to the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Las Vegas, in January, as two of over 4000 delegates at the Starkey Hearing Expo 2018. The exhibition was mainly to educate and inspire delegates to help them improve their service and products to help more hearing- impaired people, providing them with more choice and solutions to assist customers worldwide. The two new products are the rechargeable Muse IQ and the Custom Invisible Soundlens iQ. What else has Malmo got planned in 2018? We have just entered into a partnership with Sonja Jones, owner of Cardiff Hearing Ltd, based in Llandaff and Cathedral Road, Cardiff. Sonja will work with Malmo under license at our branches in Bridgend and Newport.
Patrycja with the new iQ rechargeable hearing systems
The partnership also means that Malmo, through Sonja, can offer existing and new clients a clinic option in Cardiff. Sonja will also bring her expertise, in particular, solutions for those suffering from tinnitus issues, as we aim to develop a tinnitus service we can offer to all our clients from April 2018. Starkey Hearing Foundation In our last issue, we highlighted Jakub’s work in Armenia with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, where Jakub attended a week-long event in Yerevan, Armenia, to help fit hearing aids on behalf of the foundation to over 2,000 people.
“ We aim to develop a tinnitus service we can offer to all our clients from April 2018.” Jakub has been invited back to follow up this mission from 2017. Jakub will be travelling out again in May. We will update all on this event in the summer edition of Vale Life and City Life, but you can find out more at www.starkeyhearingfoundation.org 41

This year, Paul Gentile the Jewellers celebrates its 40th birthday, and 40 years of successful trading. The celebration is a little bitter sweet as it will also mark the first anniversary of the untimely passing of its founder Paul.
PAUL GENTILE
THE JEWELLERS
It is still none the less a cause for celebration and an indication that ‘The Paul Gentile’ legacy lives on through his beloved Barry store, and is a true testament to his hard work and love of all things jewellery and ethos of great customer service.
Following on from the success of the Barry store and with the support of wife Maria and sons Michael and James, ‘Paul Gentile the Jewellers’ became a household name with the addition of three new stores in South Wales locations - Cardiff, Newport and Cwmbran.
Born in Cardiff in 1948, Paul Gentile left school at fifteen and trained as a goldsmith. His teacher was a Birmingham goldsmith who had moved to Cardiff, Paul benefited enormously from his sixty years’ experience.
With the success of the ‘Paul Gentile’ online shop, it was decided that the company should revisit its roots and reduce the size of the business to focus on everything good about small independent family businesses, delivering outstanding memorable customer experiences.
On 3rd July 1978, aged thirty, Paul and his wife Maria opened their first jewellers in Holton Road Barry. Eleven years later a second store was opened on Kings Square, Barry and so the story began.
In 2015 after many years of serving the community and doing what he loves best, Paul handed the reigns over to his son Michael and his wife Abigail. 44
Paul Gentile the Jewellers, Barry, continues to serve the community and beyond, (with loyal customers travelling to Barry from the communities served by the previous shops) offering traditional jewellery services, as well as state-of-the-art technology, creating, repairing and supplying fine jewellery and watches, as well as stocking some of the biggest brand names in jewellery; and all this by staff members with a twenty year average length of service record. In addition to the traditional jewellery shop services such as repairs of both jewellery and watches, Paul Gentile are aware of the ever evolving world of jewellery fashion.
To keep up with trends they also offer a bespoke jewellery making service, ensuring that they can supply the needs of all customers whether it be off the shelf or custom made for you.
“ Celebrating 40 years, creating, supplying, and repairing fine jewellery and watches.” It may be a 40 year old business but they are able to cater for all ages, with city centre brand names such as Thomas Sabo, Swarovski, Clogau, Troll beads, Hot Diamonds, Emozioni and Orli to name a few. It takes the pressure out of heading into a busy Cardiff and ensures you can always find what you want locally, whilst supporting a truly local business.
On April 7th Paul Gentile are hosting a Thomas Sabo day to launch the new Charm Generation collection, 10% off all Thomas Sabo charms and up to 25% off Thomas Sabo Jewellery just for the day. Last year’s event proved a fun day for all so well worth a visit. VA L E L I F E O F F E R Receive an additional 5% off on the day. Just mention VLPG.
Forging long term customer relationships is important to Paul Gentile Jewellers. They value customers’ feedback and would love to hear from customers old and new. 45

Did you know that here in The Vale of Glamorgan, we have a wealth of businesses that are still family-run to this day? Family-run businesses are so important to our local community, which is why we were really interested in the story behind the Masons Group - a Vale of Glamorgan family that have been trading across the Vale, throughout the UK and overseas with Masons Moving Group, since 1905.
MOVE & STORE We were delighted to have the chance to sit down with James Mason, a fourth generation Mason to join the business, about what the future holds for Masons!
Hi James, we understand that there have been some interesting and innovative changes at Masons, please tell us more… It is such an exciting time at the Masons Group in general. After ten years working at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd, which we opened in 2008, when the concept of serviced office space was still relatively unique in the Vale, I have moved across to the Masons Self Storage team to manage a massive refurbishment project. Summer 2016 saw the re-launch of Masons Self Storage’s brand new 24/7, state-of-the-art facility, and the demand for this type of quality, flexible storage has been so great that we have had to expand! That all sounds really exciting, so what’s involved in your expansion project? We’re always aiming to be at the top of our field, which is why we’re thrilled that the Masons Group were able to invest £1.2 million into Masons Self Storage! We chose to undertake the expansion project as a response to huge customer demand. This means that we will have an additional 215 units, in a greater range of sizes, plus we will be expanding our Mobile Self Storage services and introducing a new Business Zone, with complimentary WIFI. So there will be a dedicated area for customers to work and relax with access to WiFi? Absolutely! Our new Business Zone offers our customers a fantastic new space, with an even wider range of facilities than ever before including charging stations, a refreshments area
as well as space to work and relax and WiFi is free for all customers to use; a new and unique space to ‘Work, Rest and Store’ at the heart of the Vale. Mobile Storage sounds pretty cool, tell us more about this. Mobile Storage is a unique service that brings a storage vault directly to your door, saving you the hassle and cost of hiring a van or man with a van. 10% of the newly expanded facility will be specifically dedicated to our Mobile Storage offer. I forgot to mention that we also have a packaging supplies shop at the Storage Centre for all packing requirements such as moving boxes, bubble wrap and more. A delivery option is also available. What is the split between domestic and business customers? Actually, half and half, people need 46
self storage for so many different reasons; from home renovation to more personal matters such as break up of relationships. We have also seen a huge growth in business customers with demand from start ups, online traders and professional services. Our new Business Zone will make life much easier for these customers. Where do your customers usually come from? Due to our central location at the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, only 5 miles from Penarth and easily reached from the Wenvoe link road, the Storage Centre attracts customers from all over the Vale, and as far as the West of Cardiff due to it’s ease of access and free parking. Do you have sizes to suit different budgets and requirements? Yes, here at Masons Self Storage, our service is entirely tailor-made and flexible according to our customers needs.

We have a number of storage solutions to suit different budgets and situations, for example, our Mobile Self Storage options or for those looking for a more traditional self storage option, we currently have a range of storage units ranging in size from 12 sq ft up to 1,000 sq ft! When will the project be complete? It’s well underway and we are on track to complete in April 2018 and with several new customers already booking units. You obviously have your hands full over the coming months, so who will be taking care of the other businesses? John Walsh, the Self Storage Centre Manager, who has been working with us for three years, will continue to ensure that the Storage Centre runs smoothly as well as taking care of all of our customers.
Emma Mason will be stepping up to the challenging, but endlessly rewarding role of Centre Manager at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd in my place! The three main Directors Gordon, Brett and Richard Mason are still at the helm of the three businesses, and myself and Emma, with Warren and Daniel (both at Masons Moving Group), making up the fourth generations of Masons to join our family enterprise. And recently, the Directors’ sister, Sarah, has been onboard helping us with marketing and looking after the websites. It’s great to have so many different skills in one family.

Click, flick, share with flickybook! The problem with taking lots of images on our phones is that we rarely get to see them, and sharing them afterwards hardly ever happens. The digital books are a great way of presenting both words and images. You might be a poet that wants to see your words in print but without the prohibitive cost of printing. Or perhaps you’d like to create an album of childhood memories, the applications are only limited by your imagination. In business? A flickybook is a really cost-effective way of promoting your business. You can embed it in your website and share by email or social media. And no printing cost! flickybooks are great for: n Holiday memories n Childhood memories n Photo albums n Recipe books n Obituaries n CVs (now that’s different!) n Business brochures n Business testimonials

GOURMET GEMS
IN THE HEART OF GOWER “The Bishopston valley with its tranquil streams and breathtaking scenery, is home to one of Gower’s best kept secrets, Monroe’s restaurant.” “We’ve been here since the end of last year and things are going from strength to strength,” beams Linda ClaytonEvans, co-owner of The New Gower Hotel where you’ll find Monroe’s. “It took a while for the public to realise we were open for food and drink to non-guests, but now that the word is getting out there and people are coming and trying what’s on offer. We’re getting some fantastic feedback,”she continues. It’s easy to see why Monroe’s is getting such wonderful reviews. Stylishly decorated, it’s a luxurious space aiming to bring world-class service plus quality food and drink to the SA3 area. One glance at the menu and you’re drawn into a sea of temptations, all eager to tantalise your taste buds.
“What we’ve tried to do with the menu is reinvigorate some forgotten classics,” says Mark Evans, Head Chef and husband of Linda. “I find great joy in looking at what ingredients a plate consists of, analysing what’s needed, what’s too dated, and what can be added to modernise it.” The latest additions to Monroe’s offering certainly hark back to a bygone era, with some iconic dishes that you rarely see on restaurant menus anymore. Take the lobster Thermidor as a perfect example - freshly prepared tails in a creamy white wine, dill, mustard, brandy and shallot sauce with seasonal vegetables and potatoes. A creation that Mark is particularly proud of.
Monroe’s certainly lends itself to a celebration. Alongside the main restaurant and bar, you’ll find a function space ideal for large gatherings and parties such as birthdays, engagements, weddings, and with sixteen beautifully furnished rooms just upstairs, there’s a place to get your head down after a few too many glasses of Champagne. With its unique menu, friendly service, and stunning location, we predict that Gower’s best kept secret, won’t be a secret for much longer.
There’s also the Filet Monroe’s - three slices of fillet steak sandwiched with a toasted brioche croute, then layered with pan-fried duck liver, shallot, wild mushroom, parsley and served with a merlot and chive jus. “We like to think of ourselves as fine dining, but not in a pompous or noninclusive way,” Linda reassures. “We want to be seen as that place you go to when you’re celebrating or want something really special.” 51

What began with a germ of an idea for raising money for the much-loved RNLI, quickly grew into a fantastic event and fun-filled fortnight in October 2017.
PENARTH FASHION WEEK There has been much coverage in Vale Life, and its sister publication City Life Cardiff, and on our websites and social media about how successful the events were, mainly because of the support of local businesses and the public who put their hands in their pockets to ensure each event was a sell out. Thanks must also go to event sponsors Valco Scaffolding and Beverly Davies Penny, Events Room 11, and C3i. When asked why they sponsored the event, here’s what they had to say. “Having lived in Penarth all my life, spending my youth swimming in the sea, walking in the mud flats by the Dock beach, playing in the sand pools at low tide by Lavernock Point and camping on Sully Island, I count myself very lucky that I have never had to ask for help from Penarth RNLI, as I understand their importance, it was a no brainer for me to support the events.” Peter Walker, Valco Scaffolding “My husband is crew so, selfishly, I want him to have the best possible equipment should he find himself involved in a dangerous rescue situation. But the RNLI also provide an invaluable service and an important hub for our community.” Nicola Penny, Beverly Davies Penny
“Events@room 11 were happy and excited to support the Penarth RNLI Fashion Week fundraiser. We believe the RNLI provide an essential service for the people of Penarth and surrounding areas. It was an honour to be involved and support the volunteers who give up their time and risk their lives for their community. Beverley Williams, Room 11 Jason Hall, Managing Director of C3i Group, whose company provides digital support services to large scale events, was keen to support the RNLI as one of his employees volunteers as a crew member for the Charity. Jason is an ex-marine with an affinity for the sea and appreciation of rescue scenarios, so when the opportunity came up to support Penarth RNLI by transforming the Lifeboat Station into a Fashion House and Fine Dining Restaurant Jason willingly and very generously provided all the staging, lighting, sound and technicians to create the transformation and run the event. We mustn’t forget the talented teams at Blu Hair Design whose creative juices certainly wowed for both the models at the Gingers fashion show and for The Queen B models at the Lifeboat Station fashion show. 56
We were very lucky to secure the make-up skills of the talented Allison Sing, owner of Hair Or Make Up, and her colleagues Lucy Lightfoot and Jane Tyler, as their hectic schedules include Doctor Who, This Morning and more recently Star Wars. The ladies worked all day and into the evenings making sure the models looked their best.
Want to get involved in 2018? Plans are already underway for this year’s event and interest is coming in thick and fast. If you are a business in or around Penarth and would like to get involved in what promises to be an even bigger and (could it be possible?) better event, then please get in touch with Caroline Eva on 07899 717386, carolineeva@hotmail.co.uk or @CarolineEva10.
We are now working on ideas for 2018. If anyone would like to get in touch, please contact Caroline Eva. 07899 717386 carolineeva@hotmail.co.uk @CarolineEva10
A lover of fashion, 21-year-old Oxford Brookes university student and designer, Gabrielle Harding, from Sully, wanted to put together a sportsline that can be worn to the gym, for a coffee and to university. Karlski is a brand that offers a different take on sportswear. It’s on-trend, and is so comfy and easy to wear.
T
he brand offers a range of items including ones that are custom fit. There’s also a swimwear range offering pieces to fit every shape and size. To match each type of bikini, there are also a range of kimonos making Karlski a one-stopshop for gymwear and beachwear. The name Karlski came from a very personal experience. Gabby had an older brother, Karl, who was a professional water skier and, whilst training for the world championship on Lake Mead in Las Vegas, he had an accident and passed away. The brand name is to commemorate Karl.
There’s nothing worse than going somewhere and seeing the same item on as someone else,” she adds.
But there’s so much more to Karlski than just a sports and swimwear brand. “The sportswear is about being fashionable and fit. I don’t always wear my gymwear to the gym. I often wear it out because it’s not your typical sporty look. It’s a fashionable look and I love that, and I think a lot of other people do too,” says Gabby.
Gabby has ensured that the quality of all pieces is of a high standard - especially the leggings. In fact, Gabby wears everything in her range as she loves the quality and fit. When it came to the bikinis, Gabby went for a range of styles from swimsuits to little bikinis, so that every woman has an option to buy Karlski - whatever their size or shape.
“The jumpers and bombers are exclusives, so you’re not going to see other people walking down the street with the same item on as you.
“ The quality of all pieces is of a high standard.” Gabby’s favourite pieces from her collection? The bomber jacket, because there’s nothing out there like it. She loves the lining, the hood and just the way it sits. She also wears the plain black leggings all the time because they’re so comfy and such good quality. Oh and a cap for those non-washed hair days. Gabby will soon be appearing on our screens in a BBC documentary which will showcase her popular fashion blog.
Filming began in May and then throughout the summer. The show will also focus on the launch party which took place in July at Gabby’s parents’ gorgeous home in Sully. The show aired on BBC Wales at the end of February and on the 2nd, 9th and 16th March. Gabby recently met a few new suppliers, has also been working on her swimwear collection and has designed all of the new kimonos ready for summer. She’s also currently sourcing new bikinis for the new season and looking to add more pieces to the collection. If you want to stand out from the crowd in your gymwear or just want to look bang on trend, then Karlski needs to be in your favourites.

Vale Life is delighted to be the sole media sponsors for the Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival. The Festival was launched at the RNLI Lifeboat Station with dignitaries, RNLI committee members and crew, committee members for the Festival and local business owners.
P ORTHCAWL FASHION & FOOD
FESTIVAL
The guests were shown the video of the very successful Penarth Fashion Week which was held last year, and which is being held again this year. Can the businesses of Porthcawl rise to the occasion? We believe they can and look forward to working with everyone concerned. David Shillaw, Treasurer, RNLI Porthcawl said “Porthcawl RNLI is delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with Vale Life magazine in creating the first Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival. The event to take place in September of 2018 is in many respects the recreation of a most successful Fashion Week held last year in Penarth.
In Porthcawl we are expanding the project to include food and culinary businesses as well in the hope that they too can promote and celebrate their enterprise whilst at the same time raising funds for the RNLI. At Porthcawl RNLI we regard ourselves as an integral part of the town and hope that the job we do and the manner in which we do it reflect nothing other than credit on the town. In our major fundraising events, we always try to devise events of integrity that are inclusive of townspeople. We are thrilled to stage this event that will invite attention to the town at a very significant time in its development.’ 60
Jayne James of LouLou agreed “I am delighted to be involved with the Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival in aid of the RNLI. My grandfather was a local RNLI member and I am fiercely dedicated to promoting the town where I was born in any way I can. Porthcawl has many attractions and a Fashion and Food festival will allow local businesses to promote their products. As a partner at Loulou Boutique, we will be collaborating with other shops including The Closet Boutique to showcase our fashion collections, with the highlight being a Fashion Show and Dinner at the Grand Pavilion on Friday 14th September.” Jayne James Fashion Show co-ordinator

In1971 Crumbs, in Cardiff ’s beautiful Morgan Arcade, opened for business. It was the first vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Cardiff and, as it approaches its 50th year is still ‘top of the veggie pops’ in 2018.
CRUMBS!
The flared jeans and Afghans may have faded with time but this vegetarian icon just gets better with age. I have to make a confession here – I generally hate veggie food but Crumbs won me over many years ago (I just love their cheese and potato pie). These days, if I’m in the city centre, I’ll arrange to meet a friend there for breakfast. The Crumbs breakfast is served up to 11.30am, given the customer plenty of time to enjoy a healthy and wholesome fuel stop before hitting the shops. But what to choose? It all looks so good. I could go for a cereal bowl of either brans or mueslis (gluten free option available) served with fresh fruit and yoghurt, but I fancy something a bit more substantial so I could either choose the vegan porridge with mixed fruit and a drizzle of local honey, eggs Florentine, scrambled eggs on toast with spinach or the homemade American-style hash browns topped with fried eggs.
There’s an excellent selection of teas, coffees, soft drinks and choice of freshly squeezed carrot, apple and orange juice to choose from but it was the orange juice served in a cute jam jar that won the day. Crumbs has always been a firm favourite for lunch due to its plentiful, super healthy salad bowls, Mediterranean Falafels, sweet potato pakoras, seeds and olives, homemade quiches, lasagnes and pies (remember my favourite, the cheese and potato). Not forgetting the gluten free and vegan soups, vegetarian curry and chilli. For those just wanting a coffee there’s a to-die-for selection of vegan, gluten free and organic cakes to tempt should your resolve weaken. After the wallets and purses have been sufficiently depleted it’s back to Crumbs for an afternoon tea of home-made scones with clotted cream and jam and a cup of tea, traditional or speciality.
“ Crumbs has always been a firm favourite for lunch... Mediterranean falafels, sweet potato pakoras, seeds and olives, homemade quiches, lasagnes and pies.” 62
Why does the food taste so good at Crumbs? The produce is fresh and locally sourced, so all of the food is full of flavour and goodness. Also no meat is stored on the premises, which, for vegetarians or vegans, is of paramount importance. The restaurant is bigger than it looks from outside too. So if it looks busy inside, take the stairs at the rear to the first floor where you’ll find even more seating space which has a slightly different vibe to downstairs. Don’t just take my word for how good Crumbs is. A quick visit to TripAdvisor will reassure you that this shrine to veggie is a must visit. So maybe I’ll see you at Crumbs on your next shopping trip to Cardiff. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
TESTIMONIALS
What you like and love about Crumbs... “Amazing for vegans!” So maybe I’ll see you at Crumbs on your next shopping trip to Cardiff. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
My sister and I went to Crumbs for lunch after hearing good things about it. We are both vegans and were really impressed with the range of vegan options. We had the spiced chickpea and spinach pie with salad and hummus - it was amazing! There was also a large selection of vegan cakes, brownies and shortbreads. We had one piece of chocolate cake and one piece of carrot cake - both were delicious. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming. I’ll definitely be going back!
“Great for veggies, vegans and other humans too!” Had a lovely breakfast here yesterday followed by the best vegan cake I’ve ever had - Morello cherry and vanilla! Breakfast section is small but great quality. Lunch looked lovely with vegan and gluten free falafels and a very tasty looking chickpea pie also vegan and GF - also great selection of salads. Make sure you leave room for cake though all vegan and lots of choice!
“Superb curries!” I adore the Farrow & Ball interior. Taste is what sets Crumbs apart. Their curries are so packed full of flavour. I’m not vegetarian but they’re so good, I don’t notice the missing meat. Their soups are to die for too. If I’m shopping in town, Crumbs is my go-to for lunch.

April 2018 sees the launch of Spiritual Spa in the coastal town of Llantwit Major and a warm welcome extended to new, and existing clients from 54-year-old founder, Helen Wingstedt.
SPIRITUAL SPA
Because changes are the result of a reboot they last indefinitely.
What is your background? I’ve studied the physical and non-physical aspects and attributes of people since I was a child; motivated by a need to understand my intuitive abilities, make the most of myself and a love of seeing others do well.
What type of clients do you work with? I work with people and organisations who are serious about recovery, improvement and achievement be it for personal, professional or corporate reasons. It’s not an approach that modern people are aware of or used to but once they become aware of it and see what’s possible they never go back.
In 2006, conventional study and qualification formed the bedrock for twelve years training in native American wellness practice; an opportunity few are offered and even fewer complete. Providing fresh perspective on common problems it’s an approach that makes a massive difference in terms of results, permanency and the speed at which results are achieved. What services do you offer? Spiritual Spa services restore confidence because confidence is the key to health, happiness and success. Helping people understand when and why confidence has been lost triggers a mental, emotional, psychological and perceptual ‘rebooting’ process that moves them closer to who they really are. As a result of this non-physical i.e. ‘spiritual’ shift, many issues of health and difficulty fade away, behaviour alters and performance improves.
VA L E - W I D E
Promote your business in Vale Life
“ Although Spiritual Spa services are new to most people, in native American culture they are routinely practised and widely recognised as the fastest and most effective way of achieving long lasting change.”
Do you get results? Clients normally enjoy far more positive change than anticipated because native American practice is solution focused. Modern people expect short term relief, sticking plaster therapies and ‘gap’ based interventions such as coaching because they’re unaware that a long-term solution to their difficulties exists. I have a 100% improvement track record and I aim to keep it that way!

LaserWise Skin & Beauty Clinic offer a wide variety of treatments to help you with any issue you may be experiencing, whether it’s excess hair, problematic skin or an old tattoo you want removed, LaserWise have the answer.
GET L ASERWISE! The LaserWise team - Stacey, Suzanne & Lauren. Suzanne specialises in Laser treatments Lauren specialises in Individual and Russian Eyelash Extensions, and Stacey specialises in Semi-permanent Make-up and Microblading.
LaserWise have plenty of accolades to boast about. They are a multi-award winning, independent clinic that has been open since 2015. The clinic has continued to grow over these 3 years and have helped hundreds of people to look and feel good about themselves. City Life spoke to LaserWise’s leading lady, owner and level four trained technician, Suzanne Lazim. Tell us about LaserWise… We are a high-end, aesthetic laser clinic situated on Whitchurch road in Cardiff, which offers a huge range of treatments using our state-of- the-art lasers and equipment. The element of LaserWise that I love is the fact that we are a local, independent business which allows us the freedom, as a company, to give high standards of customer service, as we have complete control over our clients treatment and timescale, therefore, no one will ever feel rushed or pressured. This is something we hear about quite often with larger chains, therefore
we are determined to give our clients the best possible experience. I believe more of us should support our local businesses as this is where we usually receive the best quality and customer satisfaction. This is important to me, and I will support them as much as I can. What makes LaserWise different to other clinics? We pride ourselves on giving the best customer service, as I previously mentioned, but also first class treatments that deliver brilliant results that you will notice. We are proud to have won two prestigious awards - ‘Business of the Year Award 2016’ and ‘Beauty Industry Award Cardiff 2016’. We have invested a lot into our high quality lasers and equipment to give the best results we can possibly achieve. All of our clients are worth it and seeing the change on their face and to their confidence when they leave, makes the work we do so rewarding and worthwhile! 70
We are also registered with the Healthcare Inspectorate of Wales (HIW) who are an independent inspectorate and regulator that ensure the clinic is carrying out every policy and procedure as it should, ensuring client safety. A word of advice - always make sure the laser clinic you decide to go to are registered with them. What makes LaserWise special? We believe the work we do changes lives. Our goal is to help people with any issues they have with their skin, face and body, whether it’s a simple make-over or treating severe sun damaged/aged skin, we want to help. We have seen first-hand the difference our treatments make. The feeling of giving a client the confidence that they deserve is incomparable, it’s what motivates us every day! I also believe people are what makes a company special. Our staff are all fully qualified and highly trained in each service that they provide. We always strive for perfection to alleviate our client’s problems, even if it is

It takes a lot for a person to open up about their insecurities to a stranger, and I believe only certain people, specifically with these characteristics, should do this job. Full, thick hair isn’t something you think of in women and men over a certain age but, thanks to the creative owners of popular Penarth hair salon, Blu Hair Design, full thick hair is achievable when using the correct treatments.
NIOXIN AT BLU H AIR DESIGN
What happens to the thickness of women’s hair as they age? Some of our clients are concerned that repeated treatment with chemicals i.e. bleaches, hair straighteners, permanent dyes, make hair become stiff, dry and prone to breakage. Whilst this is true to some extent and, of course, the natural loss of hair as women age, there are treatments to combat this. What can be done? We have been using NIOXIN for some time now and our clients love it. It allows our clients to have thicker, fuller hair without ever compromising on their hair colour. It’s safe to use and provides longer-lasting colour and protects the hair from damage.
“Fuller hair without ever compromising on colour.”
It’s true that as you age, your hair loses some of its elasticity causing it to become brittle, but thickening solutions make hair colour fade faster. Through lab tests and support from dermatologists during product development, NIOXIN’s improved 3-Part Systems Kit enables women and men to have thicker, fuller hair without ever compromising on colour. It is safe to use at home to provide longer-lasting colour and protects the hair from damage in between salon visits. How can NIOXIN help? As an extension of facial skin, the scalp requires the same attention and treatment. The NIOXIN range of products are designed to strengthen, nourish and repair hair from its foundation. Because scalp health creates hair health, this provides the perfect foundation for thicker, fuller-looking hair. 73
What our clients say… “My stylist recommended NIOXIN to me along with a great cut. It really worked, my hair felt thicker.” “NIOXIN was the best thing that ever happened to me. It makes me feel more confident.” Book a free consultation with one of the stylists at Blu Hair Design and let them help you achieve the look and feel of your hair that you long for. If you ask most parents why they choose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe their child will a) receive a better standard of education b) have better chances for future careers c) be better disciplined and d) have smaller pupil-teacher ratios.
ST. CLARE’S SCHOOL
We chat to the Head of St Clare’s School, Simon Antwis to find out more. Who does the school cater for? We are a non-selective independent day school for boys and girls from 3 up to 18. Many pupils leave our sixth form after their A-levels who have been with us since nursery! How accessible is it? St. Clare’s stands in beautiful grounds in the historic village of Newton, Porthcawl. We are close to the nearby towns of Bridgend and Cowbridge, and ideally situated between Cardiff and Swansea with easy access to the M4 and A48. On a clear day, we can see the stunning Heritage Coastline from our classrooms. The school also runs three minibuses as far west as Neath and as far east as Pencoed.
What is so special about St. Clare’s? Our school has a strong sense of community and provides a first-class education to boys and girls from early years through to sixth form. Small class sizes in each year group ensure that each child’s individual talents and strengths are nurtured by the dedicated team of staff. The strong family ethos of the school is evidenced by the number of siblings, children and even grandchildren who attend St. Clare’s. St. Clare’s provides a return to traditional old-fashioned values and standards in a modern setting. Pupils throughout the school have access to iPads and an Apple Mac suite is available for pupils in the senior school. What subjects do you teach? From as young as nursery, children are taught French and Spanish by a subject specialist. From Year 1, science is taught by a specialist as is PE. 76
St. Clare’s follows the English curriculum for GCSE examinations. Although University might seem a long way off when deciding on GCSEs, choices at this stage can directly impact on options when it comes to A-levels and, in turn when applying to University. Contemporary subjects such as graphic communications and computer science are available alongside more traditional subjects such as geography, history, French and Spanish. By offering a relevant and flexible education we will continue to produce confident and mature young adults who will go on to success in their chosen careers. What about exam success? We’re proud of our 100% pass rate at A-level since 2014. We place great value on our pupils’ value-added performance.
As well as achieving consistently excellent academic results that outperform all other schools in the area, our pupils over-perform significantly with children of similar abilities in the average UK school. What about character and resilience? We never lose sight of our core purpose, which is to ensure your child’s holistic development and wellbeing. St. Clare’s educates the whole child in preparation for life, higher education and the world of work. St. Clare’s pupils become confident, balanced, critical thinkers who are well prepared for life beyond school … wherever that may be. Is St. Clare’s part of a group? Whilst retaining the ethos and character built up over 80 years, St. Clare’s benefits from the backing of Cognita a highly influential and well-resourced educational group.
We are part of a growing global family of schools, in eight countries with more than 30,000 students worldwide. Private education isn’t cheap. How do you know if it’s good value and an intelligent investment? St. Clare’s fees are surprisingly competitive and parents can pay fees monthly. According to the Social Market Foundation; UK children who are privately educated are likely to earn almost £200k more between the ages of 26 and 42 than those in state schools. A former private school pupil earns, on average, c.43% more per hour at 34, c.35% more at 38 and c.34% more at 42. This statistic only covers a 16-year section of a normal working life. Coarse extrapolation yields a much higher figure in the order of £500k! In fact, research by the Jobs website Adzuna shows a graduate will earn a similarly larger amount than a non-graduate. 77
It’s also vital to remember what’s important for you and your child and that a value-added education should never be at the expense of your child’s wellbeing, safeguarding and happiness. We value your child’s happiness. A happy child is a motivated child is an over-performing child For any parent your child’s happiness is always top of your agenda St Clare’s School Newton Porthcawl CF36 5AS 01656 782509 01656 789966 (Admissions) www.stclares-school.co.uk
EVERY MOMENT M ATTERS Talented photographer and videographer Ben Armstrong is quickly making a name for himself in the industry. Capturing the emotion of events, businesses and people, Ben believes that video is a marketing tool that every business can’t afford to ignore. Gower Life chatted to Ben to find out more about his passion for the moving image. How long have you been interested in photography and videography? I have been interested in film and photography most of my life. As a youngster, I use to watch a lot of films and wish I could one day make something that people could watch that would either make them laugh or smile. It’s all about the emotion. What do you enjoy most about your work? I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile or refresh their memory from a time in their life. That’s where my passion lies - being able to meet lots of new people on my journey is an added bonus. What do you think makes your work stand out above others? When I’m working with businesses, I aim to put them at ease so the essence of the business shines through. I think when you watch one of my videos there is a certain style or energy to my work.
It means a lot to me to capture a venue or event correctly so that it ends up either being a wonderful memory for someone, or a superb marketing tool. I like to work closely with the customer to capture their hard work in a fun and energetic way. What does a video cost? The budget starts with time taken filming - then I put the clips together. This is called the editing process. From there I add the music that sometimes needs to be licensed depending on what the client wants. Event coverage with music ranges from £395.00 - £1,500 depending on the length of the shoot, music and editing time. What about weddings? Weddings are usually a full day of filming, with lots of footage to go through. Sometimes I’ll have two people filming (one with the girls and one with the boys). Given the nature of this ‘once in a lifetime’ occasion, we tend to spend more time capturing as many precious moments as possible, so this is reflected in the price. 78
Prices start at £1,500 depending on length of film. I’ve also been asked to travel abroad to cover weddings which I’m happy to do. What type of clients do you work for? I have been very lucky in my career as a videographer to be asked to work for magazines, holiday companies, charities and corporate events such as The Brogue Trader and Maserati. I recently covered Penarth Fashion Week and really enjoyed working with the RNLI on the project.

A conservatory is a wonderful way to enhance your home. It gives the homeowner an extra room, connecting the inside with the outside and allows you to enjoy your garden to the maximum. But what generally happens is that you can’t sit in them during the hot summer months, because it’s too hot, and, in the winter months, it can be too cold. Future Ideal Homes offer a solution with their tile effect replacement roof system.
R AISING THE ROOF
Mr. Stuart Matthews of Pontypridd and his partner Karen had a conservatory which they couldn’t use. Even with blow heaters, the room was too cold to sit in and when it rained it was far too noisy due to its polycarbonate roof. After seeing a feature for Future Ideal Homes in an issue of Vale Life, Stuart gave the company a call. Stuart tells us more. Did you contact any other companies for quotes? Yes, just a few. Being in the heating and building industry for most of my working life, I have a good knowledge of how the building industry works so when I spoke with Geoff from Future, I felt confident that we were speaking the same language. Also Karen went to the same school as Geoff, so there was some history there. I believe it’s always better working with someone you know. I also researched online to find out exactly what type of roof we wanted and decided to go for an apex roof for the extra height.
What work did Future Ideal Homes do for you? They took off the existing roof, replaced it with a new light alloy system with 100ml of insulation and replaced all of the gutters and downpipes.
We’ve had quite a few parties here actually. We can’t hear any noise now when it’s raining - and we’ve had some heavy downpours recently. The heat distribution throughout the house is now a lot better too. We haven’t needed to put the heating on.
Were they clean and tidy? Yes. They were very professional and cleaned up every day.
Do you think the new roof has been worth the money? It is fairly pricey but the difference it has made to how we live has meant that it’s definitely been worth it. I couldn’t recommend the company and the system they use more highly.
How long did the job take to complete? Following a visit from Geoff to discuss the job and measure up, he then gave me a call six weeks later to say that the materials were in stock. A date was arranged and the work was completed in only three days. What difference has it made in the way you now use your home? We used to have patio doors dividing the kitchen and the old conservatory. Those have now been removed and there’s a much better flow to the house. We used to live in the lounge but now we’re always in the kitchen and conservatory. 80

PRE-NUPS & POST-NUPS Rhian Howells, Family Law Solicitor at Hopkins Law in Cowbridge talks us through pre-nups and post-nups‌ What is a prenuptial agreement? Sometimes called a pre-nup, or prenuptial contract, it is an arrangement entered into by a couple before they get married. It is designed to regulate what should happen if a marriage breaks down ending in divorce. If you’re planning on getting married and you or your partner’s family have an asset such as a business or farm that they want to pass on, a pre-nup can help protect it. They can also be important in second marriages, or where one or both parties have brought wealth to the marriage. What is a postnuptial agreement? A post-marital agreement is designed to deal with the same situation as a pre-nup. However, unlike a premarital agreement, a postnuptial agreement is entered into by the couple during their marriage. Pre-nups and post-nups are not strictly binding in England and Wales in the same way as a commercial contract would be. However, the courts have ruled that where agreements are freely entered into by each party (with full appreciation of the implications), the court will hold the parties to the prenuptial or postnuptial agreement.
Is a pre-nup agreement the best form of wealth protection? The best form of wealth protection from an unwanted divorce settlement is, unromantically not to get married at all. The law for cohabitants is radically different from the law relating to married couples. For those who do get married, premarital agreements are, increasingly, the best option. They are particularly useful for those starting a second marriage or marrying later in life. Pre-nups can assist in minimising the financial and emotional impact on the family if there is a divorce. What does a pre-nup cost in the UK? The cost of your pre-nup will depend on many factors: n How complex the agreement is likely to be n How much financial disclosure is required and whether it will require expert evidence n Whether
your partner plays a role in the negotiations or leaves everything to you n How much correspondence is sent, and the number of meetings needed to finalise the agreement 82

SEABREEZE HOMES Not many agents can boast that they rank number 1 out of 27 local agents most agreed sales and most viewed properties! Seabreeze can. Established in 1999, Seabreeze Homes reputation (and statistics) speak for themselves. Director, Nigel Reed, tells us more.
How has the newly refurbished office been received by your clients? Very well indeed! They love the new relaxed and comfortable feel of the office. However, as you know, I’m not one to rest on my laurels and have decided to redecorate again. There’s also a revamp of our logo on the way, which is at design stage as we speak. We like to keep things fresh and interesting here at Seabreeze Homes. A great business only works with a great team. Tell us about yours. Well, we are a close knit team with over 40 years experience between us in the industry. The market is continuously changing and we are always looking at ways to improve our standards. What would you say brings clients to Seabreeze Homes? I personally believe it is customer satisfaction and our personal approach to how we deal with matters. Whether you are looking to sell or rent your property, it is a big decision and we are always here to help. Look after your family and help them to look after you. That’s the message from Michael Morgan, Director of Vale Solicitors Advocates & Mediators. Here Michael gives us the lowdown on...
WILLS & POWERS OF ATTORNEY Everybody’s circumstances are different - second marriages, step children, business partnerships, difficult relatives etc. How would you answer these questions if you should become too ill to cope or if you should die? Who will make decisions for me? How do I make sure that my money and property will pass to my nearest and dearest? Who will look after the dog? Where will I live if I can no longer cope on my own? Who will decide if I am to receive life sustaining treatment? How will I pay for a Residential or Nursing Home? How can I protect the home that I have worked so hard for? Who will look after my children? Who will run my business? Can I make a gift to my favourite charity? During your lifetime, Powers of Attorney appoint someone you trust to make important decisions for you.
This covers everything from simple kindnesses like making sure that your grandchildren still get birthday presents to grim directions as to whether to refuse life sustaining treatment in hospital. After your day a Will makes sure that your estate is dealt with as you wish and not by statutory rules or family squabbles. How often do you read in the press of the horror stories of wills gone wrong and families in conflict? We often encounter problems arising from homemade wills or those made by unqualified will writers. There may also have been changes in the law since you made your will. Wills made before 2008 for example may include trust provisions rendered redundant by Statutory changes. If you have young children, you should appoint guardians and trustees If you are a business owner you should appoint someone to keep things going. 88
Whatever your age or position in life you should consider making a will and putting Powers of Attorney in place. Vale Solicitors offer free consultations on all these questions. We will discuss your circumstances in absolute confidence and advise on the best actions to safeguard your interests and those of your family. We can then prepare wills and powers of attorneys at agreed fixed fees.

Whilst ensuring our buyers feel at home within our Priory Gardens development we also prioritise working with the established community around each of our sites. A Community Viewing Point has been set up at Priory Gardens to encourage local residents to observe how the development unfolds and we have had the pleasure of spending time with local children at our school visits. Our visits have included Site Safety Talks and the Big Build Challenge which earned pupils at St Brides Major Primary School a coveted Runners Up Award in the UK wide competition!

Meet, mingle and mix was the theme at Gower Life magazine’s Premier Social at Quay 3’s sister venue, The Lounge, in January.
PREMIER SOCIAL On the 19th of January, we held Gower Life’s first Premier Social event. The event was held in Quay Three’s Lounge and ran from 5pm to 7pm.
There was a fantastic atmosphere to the evening which was accompanied by the relaxing sounds of musician, Daz English. The motto for the evening was ‘Meet, mingle and mix’. For more information on where and when the next Premier Social event will be, contact Lucy. 07860 930 399 lucy@goodlifepublishing.co.uk

PENARTH
Westbourne School hosts fabulous ball On Saturday 10th March, Westbourne School hosted a ball in honour of, and to raise funds for, Tŷ Hafan. The event took place at The Exchange Hotel, an incredible venue - where guests were treated to a sumptuous 3-course meal; a raffle with amazing prizes including a 7-night holiday to Murcia, Spain; and fantastic live music by the band ‘Soul Lotta Funk’. Attended by over 130 guests, the evening was a great success, raising a huge amount for the local charity. Lead nurse, Adrian Smith, represented the charity on the evening, giving an emotional and heart-felt speech about the fantastic work the charity does for children with life-limiting illnesses.
