Passionate about West Wales We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. West Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Wales for the people of the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore West Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in West Life or on www.westifemag.com (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in West Life are strictly those of the authors. Intellectual property © Copyright West Life 2017. All rights reserved. Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £40 (four issues) made payable to West Life. Visit www.westlifemag.com for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £10 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! West Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper West Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

WELCOME

A massive thank you to everyone that were involved in my first West Life magazine, and for the many kind comments regarding its quality and the enjoyment people had from reading it. I am delighted that so many of the businesses that supported me by advertising had such positive feedback and it helped increase their sales; with customers quoting the spring issue of West Life as reason for bookings or orders placed. The more observant of you may have noticed that I actually ensured the distribution promise by personally taking time out to deliver each and every copy by hand. I’ll be perfectly honest and say how fantastic it is to see so many businesses repeating their faith by advertising in this, the all-important, summer issue. I realise that many businesses had already allocated their marketing and advertising budgets prior to West Life being in their thoughts and I do hope we can be on your radar in the future. So summer is here at last and with it the lifeblood of the area - the many visitors to our beautiful corner of Wales. A big thank you to Parkdean Resorts and the wonderful team of people working there especially Denise, Nick and Ryan who are featured on our summer cover. I hope your season is a great success. I would like to ask our readers to post their photographic images with us via our Facebook page, letting everyone enjoy the beauty and memories captured on camera.

We will share as many as possible and the most photogenic will end up on the pages of our next magazine. We will also give the very best a prize that will reflect the ‘best of the West’. In forthcoming issues we intend to include a series of local profiles highlighting some of the characters that make our individual towns and villages so special. So if you have an unsung hero that deserves a mention, let us know in time for the autumn/winter issue. Once again I wish you all a truly wonderful summer and will keep my fingers crossed that the sun shines on us all. Karl Long Client Relationship Manager 07464 426630 karl@goodlifepublishing.co.uk

As a visitor to Pendine Sands in my youth, my memories of one particular Summer in a holiday home near to the beach are enduring. I certainly have nothing but happy memories. I recently visited Pendine Sands again and was delighted to find that the park is still there, better than ever, and the opportunity to purchase a piece of the Pendine good life is a real possibility.

PARK LIFE

Pendine Sands is now owned by Parkdean Resorts, an expert and well-respected park operator known throughout the UK and beyond. These holiday homes are fantastic, far beyond the common idea of the static caravan. The build quality is extremely impressive and they are beautifully designed. We caught up with Pendine Sands’ Marketing Executive, Simon Robinson, to find out more about the lifestyle of a Caravan or Lodge Owner that’s on offer. Why do you think people buy a Parkdean Resorts home here in Pendine Sands? Location, location, location – you can’t get better than Pendine Sands for a beachside resort! We’re South Wales’ most dog friendly park, we have 7 miles of sandy beaches right on our doorstep, and we have so many Welsh cultural sites nearby.

In 1924 Malcolm Campbell set the first land speed record at Pendine Sands in a car called the Bluebird which is on display at the Museum of Speed just across the way. Just up the road you’ve got Laugharne, where Dylan Thomas and his wife are buried. Dylan Thomas’ writing shed and home on the waterfront are preserved and accessible, a short walk from Laugharne’s 12th Century castle. In the other direction you’ve got the beachside towns of Amroth, Saundersfoot, and Tenby – all of them special in their own way with so much to do! Pendine Sands works as the perfect holiday base, whether you want adventures on the ocean with local companies, horse riding in the nearby countryside, to visit all of the Welsh historical sites, or to enjoy everything else the South-West Wales coast has to offer. 4

What kind of activities are available at the park? The facilities at Pendine Sands are top quality. We have so much to do for owners on park, ensuring you won’t be left wanting! n Seven

miles of sandy beaches heated swimming pool n Sunbathing and relaxation area n Top class entertainment every weekend n Mid-week cabaret n Link-up bingo n Indoor

As an Owner at Pendine Sands you’ll make new friends and have freedom for your children. You can BBQ whenever you choose and there’s free Owners’ Events and Owners’ offers you can claim at our bar & restaurant. Our site is secure and friendly with park wardens and on-park security.

What about food and drink? There’s a lot on offer at Pendine Sands whether you’re in need of a quick snack, or a full and hearty hot cooked meal. n The

Sunbeam, our burger and pizza restaurant with ice cream parlour; n The Sands, our show-bar and restaurant; n Barnacles, our beachside deli and ice cream parlour; n The Duck Inn, our sports bar; n Fish and Chips; n Supermarkets; n Chinese and Indian locally delivered; n Local bars and restaurants nearby. Are you pet friendly? Yes, we are South West Wales’ most dog friendly holiday park – dogs are allowed all year round on Pendine’s beach, and the same is true on-park!

How long are you open? Pendine Sands is open 316 days of the year which suits the needs of everyone on-site. We close on January 9th and re-open March 1st for another brilliant year of holidaying! You can even spend your Christmas and New Year here, and over the months we’re closed you can visit the site in the day, however we prefer Owners not to stay over during those two months that we’re closed as we are not a residential park and operate as a holiday park here. Are your homes affordable? A lot of people say that they can’t afford a holiday home – we say that everyone can, it’s just a matter of which one! Our prices start at £15,995.00 and our finance plans are flexible and affordable. So, no matter your budget we’re sure we can help you start your journey into holiday home ownership and change your lifestyle overnight! 5

There’s no doubt about it, Pendine Sands is a truly fabulous location, with so much to do. If the holiday home lifestyle appeals to you then get in touch with Pendine Sands, you can enquire on 01994 453 801, and before long you’ll be enjoying the Pendine Sands good life and creating amazing memories along with all the other happy Caravan and Lodge Owners!

CRAFT BEER FROM

TENBY HARBOUR

West Life visits HARBWR Tenby Harbour Brewery for a taste-test...

One of the delights of Tenby is wandering around the quaint narrow streets to see what you can find – and perhaps nothing will surprise you more than stumbling across Tenby Harbour’s first ever brewery! Tucked away in Sergeant’s Lane, just above the harbour, a state-of-the-art 5-barrel brewery is housed in a sympathetically converted eighteenth century warehouse. A building that three years ago was a down-at-heel empty shed is now packed with character, charm and beer!

“packed with character, charm and beer!” Very much geared up for visitors, you can call into HARBWR Brewery to get an insight into the beer-making process. The sheer ‘bling’ of the shiny copper and stainless steel vessels is quite intriguing, but you can also talk to head brewers, Rich and Rob, who will explain

how these rather special craft ales are brewed – keeping the secret recipies to themselves of course! “When we opened in 2015, we perfected a range of three core ales and soon developed a fourth,” explains Rich, “a pale ale, an amber ale, an IPA and a red ale – a beer to cater for just about all tastes – but we also brew special edition beers, sometimes seasonal, so rather like a changing restaurant menu, we always have something new to offer fans of HARBWR ales.” So, having had our appetites whetted by the aromas of the hops and barley as well as Rich’s enthusiasm for the beers they clearly love brewing, onto the real reason we visited HARBWR Brewery, the taste test! The upper floor of the Brewery is a ‘tap-room’ – a delightful bar area where visitors can sample the wares. Here you can really appreciate the 6

thought and design that has gone into the conversion of the building. Beautifully crafted stonework, metalwork and woodwork mix with an eclectic collection of wrought iron pieces and fascinating curios, creating an atmosphere that is the perfect compliment to this ‘liquid delicatessen’ style of beer-drinking.

“ a liquid delicatessen style of beer drinking.” Standing at the bar and looking at the draught beer pumps, we noted the names are rather unusual for beers:  M.V. Enterprise (pale ale), North Star (amber ale), Caldey Lollipop (IPA) and RFA Sir Galahad (red ale), so where do they come from? “All part of the way we celebrate being in the iconic location of Tenby’s 800 year old harbour” says Rich as he pours our first sample, “each is the name of a much loved local boat.

“Take a look at the bottles in which we also sell the beers – the labels carry a brief history for each boat which seems to grab the attention of beer enthusiasts.” Talking of which, we spot a ‘CAMRA Good Beer Guide’ logo hanging behind the bar – an accolade of which the Brewery is justifiably proud of achieving within 18 months of their first brew. Tenby Harbour Brewery has also been accredited by the Welsh Government as a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction with a particular reference to ‘a very appealing setting and friendly and enthusiastic staff who clearly enjoy being part of this exciting and growing business’... ...we couldn’t have put it better ourselves! You can access the Brewery and Tap Room from Sergeant’s Lane, which connects St Julian Street and Crackwell Street or from the beer garden of the town’s popular Buccaneer Inn.

Can I try HARBWR craft ales anywhere else? Most definitely! The sales team of Wil Crockford (above) and Lawrence Blackhall keep a steady supply to artisan restaurants, cafés, pubs and shops across Wales. Keep a look out for the distinctive bottles or pump clips at your favourite venue – if you don’t see it you can always ask them to stock it! Locally owned Tenby restaurant The Lighthouse Kitchen has scooped the prized award of ‘Restaurant of the Year’ at the Food Awards Wales held recently at Cardiff ’s Marriott Hotel. Voted for by the public, the prestigious Food Awards Wales celebrate and reward the very best in food hospitality.

THE L IGHTHOUSE K ITCHEN

The Restaurant of the Year category recognises restaurants that provide cuisine of a truly excellent standard, as well as demonstrating innovation and ambience. This is all the more remarkable as The Lighthouse Kitchen won the award a little over a year after their launch which is a great testimony to Nick Bolwell, owner and Chef, and his dedicated team. Sourcing local fish, meat and vegetables means The Lighthouse offers an unusual and ever-changing menu taking influences from cultures across the world. They serve a lot of seafood, mainly indigenous species that are local to Pembrokeshire, and are passionate about using fresh, local, ethically sourced ingredients from close to their front door. They love working with small independent suppliers, from the beans in your coffee, the beer in your bottle and the fish on your plate, everything they serve is prepared and made with loving care and attention.

Their menus focus on simple flavours done well; as you’d expect these change seasonally and they also offer daily specials according to what fresh, seasonal produce is available. Buying local produce is key; the restaurant offers fresh fish, crab, lobster, Pembrokeshire beef, and also smoked salmon, mussels and laver bread from Swansea and the Gower. We ask Nick what are the restaurant’s most popular dishes. “We serve a great deal of fresh fish and shellfish; one of most popular lunchtime dishes is freshly grilled mackerel fillets on granary bread with caper mayonnaise, and in the evenings we often serve a Sicilian fish stew with spiced sausage, tomato and squid which goes down tremendously well.” And what sets you apart from other restaurants, besides your much coveted Restaurant of the Year award obviously? “Aside from our excellent quality food, we have a unique approach to service in as much that we are attentive but 22

informal; we like our diners to feel relaxed without being over served and intruded upon.” Now that the summer season is underway you can enjoy delicious food at The Food Award’s Wales Restaurant of the Year.

Following many years’ experience in the vehicle rental and haulage industry, Director Lewis Rees and Steve Mott set up a family run business, Pembrokeshire Self Drive Hire, and it does exactly what it says on the tin! We call in for a chat with Lewis and Steve.

PEMBROKESHIRE

SELF DRIVE HIRE & VEHICLE SALES

Can you tell us a bit about your business? Up until 2016 Pembrokeshire Self Drive hire was operated on a smaller scale alongside a separate company, Nationwide Executive Chauffeurs in New Hedges, Tenby. After the sale of the Executive Chauffeur Company we moved Pembrokeshire Self Drive Hire ltd to our current larger location on Carew Airfield, Carew, Tenby when we expanded the company. And how have you grown your business? Since moving to Carew Airfield we’ve expanded the daily hire fleet to 50 plus vehicles. We’ve also managed to establish great relationships with a number of finance companies allowing us to establish a contract hire side of the business to businesses throughout Wales. Plus we’ve entered into vehicle sales, offering a wide range cars and commercial vehicles. And we also offer 1st class finance rates though our finance company partners.

What sets you apart from other vehicle hire businesses? We offer a first class personal service, offering advice on the best vehicle to suit the customers need - we’re always available to answer any customers’ questions. And we’re proud members of the BVRLA, the trade body for the vehicle rental and leasing sector. What does your hire price include? Our daily rentals include full comprehensive insurance (subject to an excess), full roadside breakdown & recovery assistance in the unlikely event of a breakdown, and if you’re travelling abroad we can offer European breakdown cover & green card insurance. Can you tell us the benefits of leasing a vehicle over purchasing? Contract hiring or finance leasing a vehicle offers many advantages over outright purchase.

“We offer a first class personal service.” 23

100% of the rental payments can be claimed against your tax, you can have the use of a new vehicle for very low initial outlay and improved cash flow, plus all servicing can be included which makes it a very rewarding option for our clients. And finally, do you have any plans for the future of your business? We aim to establish an increased a number of working relationship with private individuals as well as companies nationwide who like to deal with a company that is large enough to cope with customers’ requirements but small enough to care. Absolute Dental Care in Tenby was established in April 2014. The owners; Rhodri and Kate Evans provide affordable, high quality dental care that is patient focused.

A BSOLUTE DENTAL CARE

Absolute Dental Care in Tenby was established in April 2014. The owners; Rhodri and Kate Evans provide affordable, high quality dental care that is patient focused. As a practice they care for all of your general dentistry needs; they want you to feel welcome from the moment that you walk through the door and to feel relaxed in the surroundings. Both of their dentists show care and understanding with anyone who has a fear of visiting the dentist and they’ve successfully helped patients who were previously dental phobic to have treatment. Looking after their patients and giving them the best care possible is obviously a priority, they were therefore delighted to win the award for Best Patient Care at the inaugural Welsh Dentistry Awards in September 2016.

Over the last 3 years the practice has gone from strength to strength, enabling them to provide more advanced treatments using the most up to date equipment which benefits their patients. An example of these treatments include ‘same day’ crowns: - in many circumstances patients are now able to have a crown made and fitted on the same day without the need to take impressions, making the procedure more comfortable and convenient. They also use an innovative implant system, making implant surgery minimally invasive and painless and they have their own CT scanner so that every part of the treatment can be carried out at the practice and be planned to precision. Absolute Dental Care are currently accepting new patients, please contact a member of their friendly team on 01834 218040 to register or to answer any questions. 25

When Nicki Meharg was renovating her gorgeous cottage in Marloes, West Wales, she had the misfortune of picking the wrong builders who set the works back many months. Given that experience, when it came to choosing a company to supply her windows and doors, understandably, she knew she had to choose wisely. Here Nicki tells us of her reasons for choosing Alexander James.

L ITTLE H ARBOUR

Tell us a little bit about yourself Nicki? I am an interior Architect when in the UK and have lived and travelled abroad extensively while working as a dive instructor. I’ve spent a lot of time in Scandinavia and Holland and lived in Greece for a few years.

This was one of the influences for the design of the exterior. Derek Jarmans house in Dungeness is another. Alexander James had just done the Amazon HQ windows in the same colour. Marloes village itself has a Swedish history as Marloes is a Swedish name.

Why have you called your cottage Limenaraki? Limenaraki means Little Harbour in Greek. When I lived in Greece, it was one of my favourite beaches. I wanted the cottage to reflect that it’s a little harbour away from the stresses of the city.

Did you contact any other companies for quotations? If so, how many? Yes, I got two other quotations for the windows but chose Alexander James as friends of mine had worked with them when they did their barn conversion. The renovations were similar to mine - a complete overhaul. They chose big sliding doors which were different to the ones I chose. They said they were really happy with the work. It’s always good to have a personal recommendation.

The influence for the exterior of the house is from Dutch and Scandanavian design. Dutch traditional homes (Not Scandi) are black houses with colourful frames.

26

What work did they carry out for you? They fitted bifold doors between my new extension into the existing cottage. They also fitted bifolding windows which open out into the dining room and outside wall where I have my external dining area. They also provided front and back doors - the front doors having a fully glazed panel next to it. They also provided a mixture of top hung and side hung windows throughout the property and another feature glazed end to my gallery bedroom, which is a full end panel of gable end to the loft room. Did you have a clear idea of what you wanted or did Andrew help there? Yes - I designed the house myself. Given my profession, this was my chance to have a clean slate with a complete renovation from scratch. I had a very clear idea on all aspects of the design.

Creating the drawing package whhich guided the process from concept stage through planning to completion. How long did the process take? Due to the incompetence of the builder, the boys had to come back and forth which I really appreciated. They did two days’ work initially, then two days to fit and one further day of snagging, which is standard. They were punctual, clean and tidy.

That was the whole idea - the windows and doors are an integral part of that. Are you happy with the final result? Job defects were minimal and amended promptly. Would you recommend AAI? I have done and they have two other jobs as a result of my recommendation.

What difference has the work AAI carried out for you made to the property? The whole reason for me having bifold doors and the windows strategically placed was to get a better flow to the cottage. I had had a lot of structural walls knocked down and now the whole house is able to close down into rooms or open up into a unified space.

Stables Restaurant can be found next to the Normandie Beer Garden, between the picturesque medieval town walls in the popular seaside resort of Tenby. Historically an old coaching inn, the vibrant restaurant’s emphasis is on delicious food, fine wines and great beers, making ‘The Stables’ a much loved haunt with both locals and visitors alike.

STABLES R ESTAURANT

Locals will know Steve and Elleen Warren from their thirty years at Penally Abbey; they are to be commended for building an enviable reputation for great, fresh food using local produce wherever possible. Their delicious meat comes from the award winning butcher, Andrew Rees, from Narberth; fresh fruit and vegetables from Hugh and Janet at Four Seasons Tenby; Catch of the day includes bass, skate, cod, hake, salmon, tuna, and sole from Pembrokeshire Fish at Milford Haven and when the boat comes in they have locally caught Pembrokeshire lobster from fisherman Neil Thomas. Milk, cream and eggs come from Tim Evan, their local milkman, and their wines are from Celtic wines. Two micro-breweries in Tenby provide bottled beers - it’s fair to say it doesn’t get much more local and fresh than this.

Popular dishes include loin of venison with a sour cherry sauce, grilled duck breast with a whisky and onion marmalade, prime fillet of beef wrapped in bacon topped with Stilton in a red wine jus, and lobster thermidor. The dessert that caught our eye was iced coffee Tia Maria walnut meringue cream slice; we recommend taking a peek at the menu on their website. They also cater for vegetarians, vegans and are family friendly, serving a healthy children’s menu. The staff obviously love working here as it shows in their attitude; they are friendly without being intrusive which gets top marks from us. Open five nights a week, food is served from 6pm with last orders at 9pm. You can book your table online via www.stablestenby.co.uk or by calling 01834 843318. You’ll be glad you did. 28

HISTORIC BEAUT Y

Caldey Island Follow Caldey’s footpaths for a view that constantly changes; first Tenby’s clifftop houses, then St Margaret’s wild coves, the call of Lundy, Worm’s Head, even the distant outline of Cornwall. The island’s own inlets and outlets of Red Berry Bay, Spur Island and Nanna’s Cave – to name but a few – are worn and reshaped constantly by rhythmic seas, and the ancient pattern of nature combined with the pulse of centuries of prayer lends the place a quiet, certain sanctity. One can escape here. One can find something other than self. Here pebbles line the Old Priory’s floor; smoothed first by elements, then by feet come to pray. A tower that leans, inscriptions in Latin, and lines of Ogham. Here a round watchtower offers up an age-old Bible for moments of reflection, Celtic script and silence. A walk through shaded woodland reveals a glimpse of past lives – an archaic mill, watercress beds; otherworldliness. The Monastery dominates; here men worship, here souls give up all to gain hope.

The sanctuary and safety of Caldey’s holy buildings are juxtaposed by the lighthouse; a reminder of the side of nature which one can leave behind, for a while at least, when one treads these fragrant paths to the song of the grasses and the gorse and the cry of the gulls. The air that encircles carries with it the promise that here is the truth and essence of life. Here is faith, in all its haunting nuances. www.caldey-island.co.uk

Lewis Ballard Accountants are certainly not your average accountants. As Neil Ballard explains, “Accounts are just one small piece of the jigsaw.” Too many business owners put all their money and all their time into their business, often risking everything, taking no holidays and still ending up with nothing to show for it when they retire. Neil tells us all about how to achieve the…

WORK LIFE BALANCE

Neil and Janet Ballard

We work hard to make sure this doesn’t happen to our clients We look at the whole picture. Focusing on them personally, as well as their business. We make sure they get the success their hard work deserves, with time to enjoy it now, and the security of a comfortable future as well. To achieve this, we work with a variety of other top professionals, such as specialist Independent Financial Advisors, Bank Managers and Solicitors. However, although we encourage clients to take more time out to recharge their batteries, we realise this is an area where we can still do more. So, we invested in our own travel franchise which we aptly call Time for Life!’

Through our parent company, Not Just Travel, we now have access to over 500 suppliers and literally thousands of holidays. So now, when clients need a break, we can actually book it for them too! In every area, we always ensure our clients get the best by selecting the best companies to work with and our travel company’s no different. So, we are delighted to issue this really exciting press release about it; Olympic Hero Pledges Support to Time for Life with Not Just Travel as they strive for gold success.

“ I am delighted that Daley Thompson has joined our team.” 34

We, at Not Just Travel and based in Cardiff, are proud to announce that Olympic Gold Medalist, Daley Thompson, is our new “brand ambassador” and public face of our company. Time for Life has been a franchisee of Not Just Travel for six months, and it’s because of their indisputable support that we have grown, strength upon strength, in our business. They have provided us with the knowledge and support to grow our travel business. Whilst we work independently, we also share in the successes and brand strength of Not Just Travel which we can now excitingly say introduces Daley Thompson to our team as the new brand ambassador.

Janet, Daley Thompson and Neil

“It is an absolute pleasure to be working with the whole team within Not Just Travel, they have such a passion for the work that they do. Talking personally with Time for Life, within the franchise I discovered the real people behind the business and how hard they work to bring the best for their clients. There is such vision, passion, dedication and inspiration.” said Daley.

I am sure he will help us strive for even more future success, with his entrepreneurial, mentoring and coaching skills there is no better person to help us deliver even better results and of course the perfect holiday options for our customers.”

Neil Ballard of Time for Life, says, “I am delighted that Daley Thompson has joined our team. He is an invaluable addition to our company and, of course, a hero of mine.
