Passionate about West Wales We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. West Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Wales for the people of the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. WELCOME

Welcome to the spring edition of West Life lifestyle magazine. We’ve had such a great response to the previous autumn and winter issues. Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging feedback. Well after an icy winter where most of us experienced a significant amount of snow and ice I’m proud to present our spring issue of West Life. If you’re a visitor to the area you’ll feel the warmth of our West Wales welcome as we look forward to longer days and maybe a few hours of sunshine! I’m delighted to showcase our front cover star, Trefloyne Manor, directed by husband and wife team Tom and Sian Beynon. We would love for you all to see what a gem of venue it is - ideal for weddings and special occasions with their award-winning restaurant and accommodation offering. Trefloyne has so many amazing features to the venue, it’s almost easy to forget the fantastic eighteen hole golf course within its grounds. We are also lucky to include a unique feature on the relationship between Laugharne and Poet Dylan Thomas. I must say a massive thank you to all our advertisers, many of which are back within the magazine pages after receiving great responses from their previous features.
To all our readers in Llandeilo, Carmarthen, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, St Davids and all of

West Wales, this magazine is an ideal conduit for your business with our distribution covering the entire area. Please feel free to call me to discuss what we can do for you! And finally, to all our readers: have a beautiful spring! It is such an interesting time to live in West Wales, combined with the excitement in the air as summer approaches. I fell in love with the region many years ago and made it my home. I hope you’ll enjoy all the delights and splendour that West Wales has to offer. The story so far...

S T A Y

in the manor

Congratulations on being awarded an AA one rosette for the restaurant. What did you have to do to achieve this award? When we realised that we had been given our first rosette it was amazing not just for us but for the whole team. We have always prided ourselves on using and cooking with the best produce Pembrokeshire has to offer. We buy our fish from Wez straight from Tenby harbour, our Lamb and veg from the farms next door to us and the rest of our produce we buy from local suppliers so it doesn’t have to travel far which guarantees that it is the best. When you have a Pembrokeshire born head chef like Pip Christopher who knows how good the produce available to him is, his philosophy matches the AA requirements. Locally sourced food, cooked well and not messed around with. That’s how we achieved our first rosette What sets you apart from other places to stay? It’s like visiting family when staying at Trefloyne. We offer twelve beautifully designed rooms, each with their own character, sensitively restored from the natural layout of the manor.

DINE

in the orangery & cwtch

No details will be spared on your break at Trefloyne, to make you feel at home we have included fluffy white towels, sensual bath products and delicious homemade biscuits in each room. We endeavour to ensure you have a delightfully memorable stay. There are several activities to keep you busy during your visit; dine in our restaurant, play a round of golf, enjoy a treatment or walk in the woodland the perfect escape. You have a stunning location. Are you used as a wedding venue? Yes we do weddings at Trefloyne from 10 people to 200 people. The beauty of Trefloyne is it suits everyone whether it be a small intimate wedding in our cwtch, 110 people in our orangery restaurant or a grand marquee on the lawns you will always receive the same bespoke service from our team. The kitchen will tailor your menu to suit you. We have done everything from bangers and mash to lobster thermidor because we believe you should have what you want on your very special day. We also have a wedding license so you can have both your wedding ceremony and reception with us.

RELAX

in the Dovecote Naturally

What are your most popular dishes? The Orangery Restaurant opens onto the terrace which overlooks the gorgeous Pembrokeshire countryside. The restaurant provides seasonal dishes created from produce by locally sourced suppliers, creating a menu that changes with the seasons, weekly specials and our famous fresh fish board. Our most popular dishes are the Rack of lamb, pressed braised leg, fondant potatoes, pea and mint puree, sweet red wine and balsamic jus. Also the Monkfish tail roasted with olive tapenade, tomato, squid, chilli and butterbean stew. Kim & Joan, what led you to renovating the Old Dovecote into Treatment Rooms? We wanted to create a peaceful place for guests to unwind, so the natural step for us was to introduce a place for spa treatments. We also believe the most important thing we offer at Trefloyne is time to relax. Our holistic therapists familiarise themselves with what therapy best suits your needs. We use natural organic products which are exquisitely gentle and botanically sourced – effortlessly simple, insanely effective.

Trefloyne Manor, Trefloyne Ln, Tenb

“We had amazing food, service & loved the view from the restaurant would definitely eat here again, faultless!

There were some good reasons why the poet came here. Dylan Thomas and wife Caitlin settled in their Boathouse in the late 1940s and he drew glorious inspiration from its superlative aspect over the swelling confluence of the rivers Taf, Towy and Gwendraeth. Today, Laugharne and the tidetickled southwest of Carmarthenshire still offer natural vitality - but also a great deal more.

DYLAN THOMAS & L AUGHARNE The poetic genius of Dylan Thomas lives on in Laugharne. Indeed, the homely little township snuggled into a nook of the River Taf attracts admirers from around the world. And there’s much to see, do and cherish. Of Dylan’s former homes, the Boathouse is the most iconic. He lived there with his family from 1949 until his death in 1953, working in his writing shed on masterpieces such as Under Milk Wood. He and wife Caitlin are buried beneath a simple wooden cross in the graveyard at St Martin’s Church. Make it part of an emotional walking tour with a copy of the great man’s poems in your backpack. Pen some verse yourself, why don’t you? For further inspiration visit the quirky Corran Books, a rabbit-warren shop brimful of hardbacks, paperbacks, pamphlets, leaflets, postcards and maps.

The streets, shoreline and hills which inspired Dylan are largely unchanged so do wander and enjoy the company and knowledge of those who live here. Follow in his footsteps Visit for your birthday and follow in Thomas’ birthday footsteps - the Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk .On his 30th birthday on the 27th October, 1944, Dylan wrote ‘Poem in October.’ It’s all about his birthday walk while striding out to the shoulder of Sir John’s hill. The poem is quite simply about his love of Laugharne and getting older. The walk takes in the sweeping views of the estuary, the precarious perch of the hillside boathouse – his inspirational home and the spectacular “brown as owls” Laugharne Castle. This magnificent 13th Century fortress turned Tudor mansion became the perfect antidote to writer’s block for Dylan Thomas and author pal Richard Hughes who put pen to paper in the summerhouse here. Looking out over 8

the muscular estuary, this relic of ancient times demands you stand and stare. www.cadw.wales.gov.uk After your walk, why not treat yourself to a pint at Browns Hotel, recently refurbished, vintage chic interior, and its where Dylan Thomas hung out, he even used to give the hotels phone number as his own! They do great coffee too, and you can sit in Dylan’s spot near the window to enjoy it! The Laugharne Weekend is one of the UK’s most loved small arts festivals. It takes place in April an intimate, beautifully low-key and refreshingly different. www.thelaugharneweekend.com Come and explore all the rich history of Laugharne with its castle, church and corporation (700yrs old) in what Dylan called ‘this beguiling island of a town’. www.carmarthenshire.gov.wales

The Stone Crab is Saundersfoot Harbour’s newest restaurant. With sweeping views of the harbour and fresh dishes on the menu that showcase traditional Welsh Coastline dishes, there’s a lot to love.

THE STONE CRAB

Owners Mark and Susan Phillips opened the restaurant in May this year, they’ve tried to create a relaxed environment to sit back take in your surroundings, sight, smell and taste are all part of the bigger picture, to treat your senses to all the Welsh coast has to offer. The restaurant is predominantly fish but they do serve steak and other dishes to suit whatever your appetite! The best part about the menu is the fresh local produce, the majority is sourced from the harbour itself guaranteeing that that you get the best quality seafood. Since their opening The Stone Crab has grown tremendously in popularity - word must be getting around! The restaurant has climbed the tripadvisor

ladder to top ten within months, and it’s all down to the combined experience of great service and food full of flavour. The Posh surf and Turf really seems to be going down swimmingly (pardon the pun) every recommendation we have had is to, tuck into the steak and lobster combo! Mark was quick to tell us that they love doing what they do and can accommodate any diets or taste preferences, all will leave with a smile and a full belly! Make sure you check them out on their Facebook page, as they are so popular they can get busy very quickly, so to avoid di-solepointment (sorry couldn’t help that one) it may be worth giving a ring to book ahead. 13

Follow Caldey’s footpaths for a view that constantly changes; first Tenby’s clifftop houses, then St Margaret’s wild coves, the call of Lundy, Worm’s Head, even the distant outline of Cornwall.

CALDEY ISLAND The island’s own inlets and outlets of Red Berry Bay, Spur Island and Nanna’s Cave – to name but a few – are worn and reshaped constantly by rhythmic seas, and the ancient pattern of nature combined with the pulse of centuries of prayer lends the place a quiet, certain sanctity. One can escape here. One can find something other than self. Here pebbles line the Old Priory’s floor; smoothed first by elements, then by feet come to pray. A tower that leans, inscriptions in Latin, and lines of Ogham. Here a round watchtower offers up an age-old Bible for moments of reflection, Celtic script and silence. A walk through shaded woodland reveals a glimpse of past lives – an archaic mill, watercress beds; otherworldliness. The Monastery dominates; here men worship, here souls give up all to gain hope.

The sanctuary and safety of Caldey’s holy buildings are juxtaposed by the lighthouse; a reminder of the side of nature which one can leave behind, for a while at least, when one treads these fragrant paths to the song of the grasses and the gorse and the cry of the gulls. The air that encircles carries with it the promise that here is the truth and essence of life. Here is faith, in all its haunting nuances. 14

When the site of the old Mews Bistro became available in Tenby, Rob Faulkner and James Beaven saw an opportunity that they quickly grabbed with both hands and, in July of 2016, the Sandbar was born.

SANDBAR

For Rob and James it is hard to remember a time before the existence of their company ‘Tenby Brewing Co’, a business venture that led to the creation of Tenby’s newest dining experience. “We scraped around to get together enough funds to secure the site of the old Mews Bistro and got to work refurbishing the whole place from top to bottom.” Since the birth of this new chapter in their lives, the pair have not looked back. “Since July 2016 we have become one of the best rated eateries in the county with the countless hours of hard work from our amazing team, Kate (Manager) and Sean (head chef). We could not have done it without them. This informal dining experience allows patrons to get comfortable alongside fellow customers to enjoy the Sandbar’s extensive street food menu.

This is in addition to the huge variety of independent beers, ciders, and spirits; all of which are purchased exclusively from independent companies in Pembrokeshire and the rest of the UK, meaning that you will not find any generic, mass produced drinks here! You can also try some of the Sandbar’s very own super fresh and full-flavoured beer, brewed in their very own brewery found only a few hundred yards away; So you pint may have only been in the keg overnight before you taste it. You won’t find freshness like that elsewhere. Since the Sandbar’s inception Rob and James have always looked to the future and what it holds for them and for the Tenby Brewing Co.

“Sandbar’s very own super fresh and full-flavoured beer.” 15

They like to change their menu every season, with the launch of the Summer menu just around the corner you will be able to enjoy some exciting dishes including panko chicken katsu curry, and spiced tomohawk pork steak, plus plenty more including Vegan and Gluten-Free options. The boys are also planning some great live music events and are looking forward to their busiest season yet! Since taking the reins back in 2016, Linda ClaytonEvans and husband Mark have been carefully monitoring how customers react to what’s on offer, and those readers familiar with ‘the Tafarn’ - as it’s locally referred to - will have noticed that change is afoot at the Llanedi establishment.

TAFARN-Y-DERI

Gastropub - a word that’s thrown about to describe any inn, alehouse or bar that serves pies, burgers or fish and chips, but what does it actually mean? “For us, it’s all about the quality,” says Linda Clayton-Evans, co-owner of The Tafarn-y-Deri, “and I don’t just mean the food - everything from the crockery used to how the guest is greeted needs to be right,” she adds. “When we created our first menu here, we wanted to focus on delivering something that was out of this world. Plates that blew people’s socks off,” says Mark. “We went ‘fine dining’, but soon realised that we wanted to reach a bigger audience. We listened to the local community who told us that they loved the food but wanted a friendly and informal setting where they could enjoy great quality, modern classics.” Enter the Tafarn-y-Deri’s new spring dishes - a curated menu that celebrates the best local ingredients Carmarthenshire and South Wales has to offer.

Take the steaks as a perfect example each one aged for 28 days and sourced from local butcher, Howells. Then there’s the already popular pork and apple burger - handmade in the Tafarn’s kitchen, it comes topped with red onion and ale chutney, creamy Perl Las cheese and black pudding, all in a brioche bun with in-house slaw and twice-cooked chips, the ideal comfort food to take you from winter into the warmer seasons.

“We can’t wait for the spring season to really kick in and show both locals and visitors to the area what the new Tafarn is all about,” concludes Linda. With such a commitment to quality, as well as promoting all South Wales has to offer on the food front, we’re sure visitors and locals are going to be impressed.

“I think the new menu really sums up what we’re about now”, continues Mark, “we use the freshest ingredients and add that all important pinch of Welsh flair! We want our guests to, no matter what the weather, think Tafarn.” It’s true the menu has options that perfectly suit the changing season. As well as the aforementioned comforting dishes, there are also lighter options, including some spectacular seafood such as a pan-fried salmon fillet with smoked salmon and leek cream sauce, and a baked cod loin with tomato and mussel sauce.Perfect when accompanied with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio and enjoyed in the sunshine on the Tafarn’s expansive sun terrace. 19

Pro-Surface Cleaning are experts in all types of stone and surface cleaning. Using the latest Doff and Torc technology and experienced gained cleaning sites of historical interest, listed buildings, removing graffiti to residential rejuvenation, Pro-Surface cleaning offer a service that other standard cleaning companies cannot provide.

DOFF is a steam based stone cleaning system. It’s unlike any other steam system and can achieve temperatures of up to 150°C at the nozzle end – making it a ‘superheated water system’. The temperature and pressure can be varied, to remove many different types of paint and biological matter. Without the need for harmful chemicals, it remove moss, algae, fungi and other biological matter and will also kill off spores. Whilst the temperature in the system is high, the pressure on the surface being cleaned is very gentle and the volume of water is low. The surface is therefore not saturated and will be dry within minutes.

When the surface requires a more abrasive clean, the TORC system’s most distinctive feature is its revolutionary modulated nozzle, which creates a gentle swirling vortex utilising low volumes of water, fine inert granulate and air. When in the hands of a competent person the results that are produced are probably the most sensitive and efficient methods of cleaning masonry.

Whatever your surface cleaning requirement, either commercial or domestic, we guarantee to carry out in a professional manner, always considering the most environmentally friendly way of doing so, and always the least intrusive to our clients. We are the Pembrokeshire’s local experts in Stone Cleaning. If you’d like to enquire about freshening up your driveway or house exterior in time for Summer, please give us a call and one of our friendly team would be delighted to help. We hope to hear from you soon!

Dental implants have revolutionised the cosmetic dental field over the last few decades by providing a permanent solution to missing teeth that act like natural teeth.

IMPLANTS AT ABSOLUTE DENTAL CARE

A dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root and a highly reliable form of treatment. The general success rate for dental implants is around 95%. They can be used to replace one or more missing teeth by providing the foundation for long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures. Well maintained implants placed into adequate bone can be expected to last for many years and possibly for your lifetime. While traditional dentures can be uncomfortable and lack retention, preventing you from eating certain foods and affecting your confidence, a

well-fitting implant retained denture should sit comfortably in your mouth and allow you to eat all of the foods you enjoy. At Absolute Dental Care, Dr Rhodri Evans uses a pilot guided implant system that allows him to place implants in the most predictable and least invasive way. We also have a CBCT Scanner on site, this enables us to take a detailed 3D scan of the teeth and jaws, ensuring that implants are placed in the optimum location. Rhodri offers an initial free consultation appointment for anyone interested in dental implants. 29

If you would like more information or are interested in arranging a free consultation appointment, please contact a member of our friendly team who will be happy to help.

It’s been another incredible year for Alexander James of Swansea. As the company’s reputation has been growing, primarily, from its many happy customers. Mr and Mrs Lewis of Cowbridge are one of these and are now fully ensconced in their stunning new home. “Our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape.” “Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation.”
