We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Wye Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Wye Valley for the people of the Vale of Usk and Wye Valley. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Wye Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Wye Life or on www.wyelifemag.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Subscriptions To guarantee your copy, please send a cheque for £20 (four issues) made payable to Wye Life. Visit www.wyelifemag.co.uk for special subscriber discounts and special offers. Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@wyelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Wye Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Usk, Wye Valley and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

WELCOME If you look at the spine of each issue of Wye Life you’ll see a quotation. This has been a tradition of ours since the very first magazine published by Good Life Publishing. The spring issue carries our motto: To reap, first we must sow. This mantra, I believe, applies to everything we do in life because life is always about putting in positive effort to reap rewards. Just look at the recent success of Hereford FC and reaching Wembley for the final of the FA Vase, it took great determination by local businessmen to fund the club, and an astonishing amount of faith and support by the club’s fans too. The National Eisteddfod is coming to Monmouthshire (near Abergavenny) this summer. Celebrating Welsh poetry, literature and music will, for many who take part, be the culmination of much creative angst and effort. Then our local Abergavenny cyclist, Becky James, winner of a bronze medal in the recent World Championships. Becky has fought a long journey back from a knee surgery and a cancer scare, and dreams of competing in the Rio Olympics. Missing dog Max Facebook has been filled with much loved missing dog Max. The springer spaniel has been missing since Christmas Day, but so many people simply haven’t given up hope and the search continues. Please aid the search by joining Facebook page ‘Lets get Max Home’ and make this a happy outcome.

There’s more exciting news as our front cover, Woods of Whitchurch, opened their Art Gallery Coffee Shop in April above the hugely popular general store. Plus our back cover, the very popular Glewstone Court Country House & Restaurant with Rooms, is another Herefordshire hidden gem we’ve discovered. I do hope whatever you sow this spring, you’ll reap great reward this summer. See you then. Chris Howell Client Liaison Director 07837 940639 chris@goodlifepublishing.co.uk Cover Girls! Congratuations to Lucy of Woods of Whitchurch on opening Woody’s Coffee Shop. We’re sure it will be a great success. Congratulations to all involved. See feature on pages 98 and 99.

Goldsmiths Gill and Alan Saunders have just returned fresh and inspired from their main German exhibition, Inhorgenta, which took place in Munich at the end of February. Wye Life caught up with Atelier Gilmar to find our more...

ATELIER GILMAR

This, again, was a very successful show for them. They were extremely pleased to attract the attention of new jewellery galleries in Paris and Barcelona where they will be exhibiting retrospectives of their work. This year Gill and Alan were showing two new exciting collections; the first, called Cube, is a range comprising 18ct gold, diamond, Tahitian gem pearls and fine silver. Designs in this range are extremely bold and strong, and were selected to be showcased in the main publication of the show and resulted in a new order from a prestigious jewellers in Denmark.

The two goldsmiths maintain that this is the only true way to guarantee the quality of design and craftsmanship. It also has a huge advantage when clients are commissioning an item of jewellery to be able to discuss the design directly with the jewellers who are crafting the piece. Designing for their clients in Monmouth is of great importance to them, as collaboration and discussion very often results in inspirational design.

“Gill and Alan were showing two new exciting collections.

The second new collection is called Cirrus. This work is much softer and flowing, and was inspired by the beautiful cloud formations in the Wye Valley. The beauty of this range is that it uses all colours of gold along with white and natural coloured diamonds. Both of these collections will be on show in their own studio shortly. As is always the case, all of the jewellery from the Gilmar goldsmiths is designed and handmade in their studio workshop in Monmouth. 8

Aside from their exhibition work, they also design and make unique pieces which are only available from the Monmouth Studio. The talented couple are currently working on a new collection of matching wedding and engagement rings. With the Spring Wedding Season fast approaching wedding rings are always an exciting challange as fashions change from year to year.

Designs can range from a classic plain band to an interlocking diamond set ring. Gill remarks, “ This is the most important ring of your life, so why not go for a special design? It is forever and for clients to have an input into the design, themselves, is vital - making the rings unique to them. 2016 is certainly looking to be a busy and exciting year for the goldsmiths of Monmouth.

“A South Wales local online estate agency with a growing reputation for providing excellent attentive service combined with competitive, fair pricing for our customers.” Samantha Troy

A DRE PROPERTIES

Having relocated back home to Wales to give my four wonderful children a better quality of life, I originally went to work for the family estate agency business in Chepstow. But after ten years of working from the high street it was my opinion that the future of the estate agency lies online. So I took the plunge to set up on my own, and Adre Properties Ltd was established by September 2014 as a dedicated South Wales online estate and letting agency for both residential and commercial property. I often get asked about the name Adre, it’s actually taken from the Welsh meaning home or homewards, which I thought was a lovely concept whether you are home buyer or Tenant! Adre Properties is quite literally based at the gateway of Wales at Chepstow and operates throughout Monmouthshire, the Wye Valley, Chepstow, Caldicot, Caerwent, Magor, Llanvair Discoed, Llanvaches, Penhow, Parc Seymour, Langstone, Newport, Cardiff and along the South Wales corridor.

“We’re committed to operating within best practice guidelines.”

Adre Properties is situated on Junction 2 of the M48 in the modern serviced offices at Basepoint. The team at Basepoint, headed up by Tina Colegate and her assistant Chloe Geoghegan are always on hand to really support your business and help you succeed. I chose this location as it offered an accessible, friendly and professional environment in which to do business it’s a really great community in which to work! But perhaps more importantly, we don’t have the heavy overheads of being on the high street so we can offer competitive rates with absolutely no compromise on the quality of service.

The only difference is we are still working often when some agents are in bed or long gone home. This is a great advantage, as I am finding that most people don’t really start their property search until at least 7pm at night, and particularly if you are selling your home it’s reassuring to know we are working as hard as we can for you. We’ll advertise your property on the UK’s most popular property search websites where your property will be visible to thousands of people.

Underpinning the integrity of the services offered by Adre Properties for vendors and purchasers, landlords and tenants are qualification, accreditation and ten years previous experience within a traditional estate and lettings agency and, most essentially, local knowledge. Adre Properties is fully committed to operating within best practice guidelines and is dedicated to improving conditions in both property sales and the private rented sector. We have been growing through reputation and word of mouth and we are happy to provide references from vendors and landlords. Personal service is core and yes we do viewings and offer the same services as a high street agent. 11

Lisa Haughton’s labour of love, Flaunt, is open for business. Wye Life popped over to take a peek at her fabulous new shop.

IF YOU’VE GOT IT FLAUNT IT

Lisa, a little bird tells us it’s been quite a year for you. That’s right, I got married in July, we’ve moved into our new home – and I’ve very recently launched Flaunt Home & Gifts. What led you to open this beautiful shop? With my two children having grown up and flown the nest the timing was perfect to consider this next stage in my life. A year ago I set up a business called Flaunt Jewellery which I ran from home. I loved choosing the right pieces for all age groups, and it proved very successful. So, when I was offered the opportunity to take on this shop I jumped at the chance. I also upcycle furniture so this was the perfect time to combine the two, and add gorgeous gifts and home accessories. Taking a look around us, gorgeous is the word Thank you. Once I’d decided which products to stock the rest fell into place. I’m thrilled with the pieces I’ve chosen – we offer furniture, jewellery, handbags, cards, gifts and home accessories. Some of our current brands are Village Candles, Miss Patisserie, East of India, Love the Links, Rose & co, Febland and Sass & Belle. I’m constantly updating our ranges so that each time our customers pop in there’ll be something new in store.

How did you decide on Caerleon as your location? Caerleon has very much become a destination town; as well as the Roman attractions it also has a great range of very popular Restaurants & Cafés. I saw there was a gap in the market for more retail offerings and as I live locally, and we often frequent the great restaurants in the area, there was already a pull towards the town. As well as tourists, local people are coming into the town for their shopping - Sainsbury’s, Spar, World of Kitchens, The Goldcroft, and Roberts & Co are all right on our doorstep.

We know you’ve just opened - but any plans for the future? Actually yes, the shop has an adjoining room at the rear which we’ll be converting so that I can carry on with my furniture upcycling projects in-house. We’re also planning themed evening shopping events so please follow us on Facebook so that you can keep up to date with our news and offers.

Want to look younger - without surgery? At some point it’s hard to ignore the vivid signs of ageing. With non-surgical aesthetic treatments growing in popularity we popped along to see Chantalle Coombes, Independent Nurse Prescriber, of multi award-winning Sugar Box Clinic in Newport to discuss all things bright and beautiful…

SUGAR BOX CLINIC

Chantalle, when was Sugar Box Clinic set up - and what’s the ethos behind it? Sugar Box Clinic was set up in September 2010. I started out as a mobile nurse before moving in to our current premises two and a half years ago. Originally I worked for a national chain as their Aesthetic Nurse, followed by a position as Regional Sales Manager for a filler distributor, where I was training other medical professionals. The idea of Sugar Box Clinic is to offer our clients a warm and friendly environment with the very best minimally invasive treatments possible. Can you tell us a bit about your training centre, Honey Fizz? Honey Fizz is located at the same premises as Sugar Box Clinic and was set up to improve quality of standards in the cosmetic industry.

Working as a Sales Manager for a filler distributor I was often called upon to provide assistance for practitioners who were certified to deliver treatments, yet hadn’t had any practical experience. What should our readers consider when thinking of getting non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments? We advise choosing a clinic that has medical professionals that are registered with their professional regulatory bodies. For example, I’m registered with The Nursing and Midwifery Council and the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses, and our Doctors are registered with the General Medical Council and the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors.

“We have guarantees in place for peace of mind.” 14

However, you should always investigate that one step further, and ensure that your practitioner knows how to manage complications should they arise. For our prospective clients we would book them in for a free, no obligation consultation so we can assess their suitability and explain the treatments available. And how will they know if they’ve chosen a trustworthy clinic? Check out our reviews, our clients will tell you themselves. With Facebook you can even contact the people who’ve written the reviews to find out for yourself what they really think. As well as being associated with the regulatory bodies we’ve discussed, our doctors, nurses and beauty therapists are highly qualified professionals.

And we’re proud of our awards; The Welsh Hair & Beauty Cosmetic Clinic of the Year Award 2014, Mumpreneur Gold Website Award 2015 and What Clinic Customer Service Award 2015. What treatments do you offer at the Sugar Box Clinic? We’re a very ethical company and pride ourselves on offering a warm and friendly welcome. We guarantee peace of mind and to give our clients a price plan to consider before embarking on any treatment. Hence we guarantee to be on time, as your time is precious and we respect that. We offer dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, chemical peels, semipermanent make-up, micro-needling, prescription skincare (we’re stockists for Neostrata). In the past year we’ve introduced the 3D Lipo for fat freezing

and inch reduction as well as the Silhouette Soft, which is the only product on the beauty market enabling two joint actions: a lift effect as soon as Silhouette Soft is applied, for an immediate and discreet result - and a regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results. Our clients are thrilled with it. What plans do you have for the future? We’re very excited to be opening our second clinic in Risca on July 16th. And to mark this occasion we’re currently running a ‘Refer a Friend’ opportunity for one of our clients to win a weekend trip for two to New York. Our new clinic will specialise in laser hair removal, tattoo removal, colonic irrigation and the weight loss system Hypnotic Hypnoband.

“ Ensure your practitioner knows how to manage complications.” 15

We discovered this empty shell of a property that was, at that time, in no way equipped for anything, let alone a restaurant but, thanks to my background as an interior specialist, we could easily visualise everything that was needed and, sure enough, we quickly made our dreams a reality.

No 3 is a small location and we couldn’t be happier about it. We believe that its size is ideal as it allows us to have something that a lot of restaurants have lost over time, a personal touch. We think that it is important for our customers to be able to meet us which is why we make sure that one of us is at the restaurant at all times.

We wanted to create a welcoming and relaxed environment - a place that had a buzzy atmosphere where people could come and enjoy themselves, whether it was a special occasion or simply an excuse to leave the house - which is why we created a menu that we hope reflects this idea. With light bites for the ‘snackers’, sharing platters that

We love to receive feedback as this allows us to make sure that we are providing the very best service and experience possible. If we expanded, if we made the restaurant bigger, we might run the risk of losing this integral part of the restaurant experience, so we plan on staying just as we are - small and mighty. Charlie 19

More affordable than many of us would think; made-to-measure, beautifully designed furniture which is unique to you, your home and to your specifications is becoming increasingly popular. We visited Suzanne Williams at her beautifully renovated property to find out about her recent experience with Quails Interiors, Usk.

QUAILS Suzanne, how did you hear about Quails? My future husband Richard knows Drew, the owner of Quails, through the local rugby club in Usk, and was aware of the quality that Quails offer. Also many of our friends have a Quails kitchen, so we’d seen the superior workmanship at their homes as well as at the fabulous showroom in Usk. What brought about your decision to commission a bespoke kitchen? Well, we wanted to use the whole space that we had, and make the kitchen a focal point of our home. We desired a kitchen which would be designed for our needs, using original ideas - and with us being able to participate in the designing of our kitchen. This route gave us the freedom to have exactly what we wanted.

“There was no hard sell, and at any stage. ”

What made you choose Quails for your new kitchen? We arranged a meeting with Drew, which was refreshing because he’s so calm and personable - Drew got to know us and exactly what we wanted. We were both on board completely as it was obvious that Drew knew exactly what he was doing. Only towards the end of the meeting did he show us any kitchens, and we instantly knew the kitchen we wanted. There was no hard sell, and no assumption at any stage that Quails would be awarded the business. We were under no pressure, and had the space and time to make the right decision. We were then invited to the Quails workshop in Newport where we met Drew’s wife Sian who has an outstanding flair for kitchen design, and we were able to see bespoke kitchens being produced by their highly skilled team which gave us added reassurance. 22

After visiting the workshop we made an easy decision, and the actual cost was not as much as we’d budgeted for which was a very pleasant surprise. Drew introduced us to Cardiff Aga, and even paid for a cookery demonstration for us to use an Aga before deciding to buy. All of the other appliances were sourced by Quails and we had plenty of choices to decide exactly which ones complemented the rest of the kitchen. How was the process from start to finish? The first stage was approving the plans and we were able to move and change things to our liking - including the main colour of the kitchen. Quails then went into manufacturing at their workshop and after several weeks the installation started. In total it just took two weeks to install - even though the whole house was being renovated and the Mandarin Stone floor had already been laid.

During this process there was no panic, just calmness with the whole of the Quails team. Drew kept a constant eye on the installation and kept us informed with regular updates and we actually looked forward to his visits among the madness of the rest of the house. We have to say your new kitchen looks absolutely stunning; what do you love most about it? I love the Quooker taps; it’s great not having to boil a kettle. And I love the separate cooking area, plus the island is very useful, especially for guests we can chat and enjoy a glass of wine together while I cook. How will your new kitchen affect your life and those of your family? The kitchen has become a social hub for us all. We even watch TV in the kitchen now, and whenever friends or family come around we always entertain

in the kitchen. The surround sound in the kitchen means that I can listen to my music or the radio. The kitchen has also become the main access to our rear gardens and swimming pool. Would you recommend Quails? Absolutely, we both highly recommend Quails. Drew was our oasis of calm among the chaos of the rest of the renovation. I must admit it was pure enjoyment dealing with Quails, so much so that we have just commissioned them to build our Study. We had a few national companies quote the work, but there was no freedom in changing what exactly we wanted. The plans have just been finalised and the manufacturing has just started.

“We were able to see bespoke kitchen being produced.” 23

Celtic Heritage Kitchens have many years’ experience in designing and installing bespoke kitchens in all types of homes; from regular family dwellings to a National Trust property! We caught up with owner Hugh Davies to chat about the beauty of bespoke…

IT STARTS WITH A DREAM

Hugh, when was Celtic Heritage Kitchens established? We started the business in 1999 first working from home and then expanding to where we currently custom build in our own workshops. With my background as a cabinet maker I’ve always been passionate about quality and design. One of our biggest strengths on which we pride ourselves is our quality of workmanship - working to traditional methods whilst combining the advances of modern engineering. For example, dovetail drawer lines with Blum soft close runners which carry a lifetime guarantee, these are fitted as standard. And do you make all the furniture yourself? Yes, I remain totally involved in the whole process from designing and drawing the plans, through the construction process, and right through to fitting. It’s so important to me to remain hands on from start to finish. At no point do we contract out to other companies to fit.

For us it’s all about the finished product and the attention to detail and, of course, maintaining the relationship you have built with the client. Where does your creative spark come from? Without wanting to sound corny my inspiration is my father. It’s from him I inherited the creative gene. He had great universal skills as an accomplished sign writer and an artist; his greatest passion was classic cars - he used to restore and hand paint using fine brushes. When the car was finally restored the paintwork used to gleam to perfection. It’s this attention to detail that drives me to always do my best work.

“ Building up strong customer relationships has been key to growing our business, as much of our work are referrals.” 24

How have you grown your business to where it is today? Attention to detail, and standards of workmanship, and being open to change. Customer service and ongoing after-sales service is another aspect we pride ourselves on. Building up strong customer relationships has been key to growing our business, as much of our work are referrals from delighted customers. What’s your most prestigious project to date? That would have to be the Lake District Derwent Island House which is owned and leased by the National Trust. The house featured in the Daily Mail; it’s situated on its own private Island with panoramic views over the lakes. All of the kitchen furniture had to be transported via boat crossing; very unusual but, I’m proud to say, it went like clockwork thanks to the professional team I work with. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to return next year to refurbish the former servant’s quarters. I’ll keep you posted.

Do you have your own workforce? Yes, I have a small team of highly skilled craftsmen who are very adaptable. All our work is carried out and completed in our own workshops, including the hand painting which we touch up on site. We have a team of certified tradesmen we call on for plumbing, electrical and building work. They work independently, and the client pays them directly even though the management and arrangements are made through ourselves - it’s all part of our high level of customer service. Do you provide guarantees? All work, subject to our terms and conditions, comes with a lifetime guarantee; as does our customer service which remains ongoing. Our guarantee is founded on the highest standard of workmanship and sustainable materials. For example, our carcasses, which we build ourselves, are 18mm birch plywood, lacquered for a durable and superior finish. Also we don’t use MDF; instead we use tulip wood for hand painting due to its low moisture level and durability.

And finally, what advice would you give to our readers who may be thinking of updating their kitchen? Firstly think about your wish list and what is really achievable with the budget you have. A good question to ask yourself is are you are staying in your current property? If the answer is yes, then think about longevity and the best quality kitchen you can afford. Note I did not say the most expensive, although quality does have a price tag attached. The main criteria to look out for is the quality of workmanship; how the cabinets are made and the components used including the carcass. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and make sure you get what you pay for. Chris Atwell first established Monmouthshire Conservatory Company in 2003. Having gained many years’ experience within the industry, his ethos was to create a company that would deliver superior service and product quality on a personal and local level.

A CLEAR VISION

“ Very highly recommended. Most impressed, would have no hesitation in recommending this company.” Which Trusted Traders In 2012, the company relocated to their show site at Pengethley Garden Centre, Peterstow, in Ross-on-Wye. The move centralised their location, making them more accessible to their increasing customer base throughout Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, as well as continuing their established presence within the Monmouthshire area. Since their move, the show site in Ross-on-Wye has continued to grow and flourish. They boast four fantastic conservatories, fully furnished to the highest standard to give you a feel for what might be possible in your own home. In addition to windows, doors and orangeries, the extra space has enabled them to grow this original business and they now provide quality greenhouses and garden buildings.

Also on display here are a number of beautiful pine log cabins. And we love that their superb greenhouses are not only for show - they also grow vegetables and herbs. Chris is passionate about the company’s vison. “This is an independent family business. We’re aiming to grow and nurture the company for future generations. Responsibility, long-term commitment and the pursuit of excellence are our key objectives,” he says proudly.

“ Responsibility, long-term commitment and the pursuit of excellence are our key objectives.” 30

Lara, Chris’s daughter, has been working within the business since its creation. She focuses on all elements of HR and general office management and Lara is also the voice behind our Sunshine radio adverts. Chris’s son Robyn was originally employed as a fitter and has now progressed to Project Manager - with his experience he’s well placed to ensure that all elements of your build run smoothly and that you’re 100% happy with your project from start to finish. Chris’s wife Isabel has now joined the business full time to concentrate on the continued growth of the business With many of us now wanting to improve our homes by adding extra living space instead of a costly house move, their new Skyroom/Livinroom ranges are the perfect answer.

The best of both worlds, Livingrooms and Skyrooms combine the light of a conservatory with the walls and ceiling of an extension. Truly multi-functional; light, airy and elegant, these rooms boast the practicalities of outstanding construction along with the economic benefits of insulating, high performance glass. Chris says, “These superb rooms can be designed to suit your individual specifications and size requirements, they can be truly bespoke.”

So if you’re looking to add to/ enhance your home/garden we suggest a trip to Monmouthshire Conservatory Company - which, as you can see, is so much more than conservatories.

Their build service is genuinely ‘in-house’ - they employ their own local workforce and consistently aim to provide a service to the local community that is second to none. Oh, and they offer a ten-year guarantee on all products (excluding greenhouses and cabins).

Hereford is a cathedral city, civil parish and county town of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Wye, with a population of 53,516 people, it is the largest settlement in the county. The name Hereford is said to come from the Anglo-Saxon word for “here”, an army or formation of soldiers, and the “ford”, a place for crossing a river. The Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd, meaning ‘old road’, and probably refers to the Roman road and Roman settlement nearby. An early town charter from 1189, granted by Richard I of England, describes it as “Hereford in Wales”. Hereford has been recognised as a city since time immemorial, with its city status being reconfirmed as recently as October 2000.

In their first full season, Hereford Football Club are chasing honours on all four fronts; promotion from the Midland League, in the semi-finals of Midland League Cup, in the HFA Challenge Cup final and, of course, their final match of the season in the final of the FA Vase to be played at Wembley. April and May are sure to be exciting times and nobody could have ever predicted such a thrilling season. Wye Life talks to Hereford FC’s Commercial Manager, Chris Ammonds, to find out more.

FOREVER UNITED Chris, please tell us about the history of the former club… The former club was called Hereford United and was founded in 1924. They achieved national prominence in 1972 when, as a Southern League club, they knocked top-flight Newcastle United out of the FA Cup. Hereford played at Edgar Street for their entire history. They were nicknamed ‘The Whites’ or ‘The Lilywhites’, after their predominantly white kit, or ‘The Bulls’ after the Hereford cattle breed. The club’s motto was “Our greatest glory lies not in never having fallen, but in rising when we fall”. The club was affiliated to the Herefordshire County FA.

On 19 December 2014, the club was wound up in the High Court after a petition had been brought against it by HM Revenue and Customs. This was after many fans had boycotted the club and had become disillusioned. Following the demise of United, a new ‘phoenix club’ was being set up, Hereford FC, and the new club planned to incorporate the words ‘Forever United’ into its crest design, as well as the iconic Hereford Bull. When did Hereford FC form and who invested in the club? A group of supporters and local businessmen worked together with the supporters trust in formulating a plan to secure the lease of the ground from Herefordshire Council. The negotiations took three months and, in March 2015, the new club was granted a five year lease of the ground. Four locals mark Ellis, Mike Roberts, Mark Blanford and Nigel Emonson each pledged £50,000 to give the club a sound financial foundation. In April 2015 they were granted permission into the Midland Football League, which is step nine of the FA pyramid system which is five leagues from the Football League.

The club set a target of 250 season tickets and managed to sell 1,500 which clearly showed that the people of Hereford were behind the new club. Indeed the first friendly match against FC Manchester drew a ground of 4,300 and a victory too. In August they started the league fixtures and, after three defeats out of the first five matches, the signs were not good. Then, incredibly, the team went on a 34 unbeaten run in all competitions which saw them climb to the top of the league and progress in all of the cup competitions. What do you think is the secret to this success? There really is great synergy between the club and the people of Hereford. They have come together to start something special. The club only employs three full time staff, so they are hugely dependent on volunteers and extremely grateful as without them there would be no football club. 34

Also with the fantastic appointment of manager Peter Beadle, a former United youth manager being able to attract players to drop from higher levels and introduce young players form local colleges. There certainly is no ‘us and them’ scenario and the club is together as one. You must be delighted getting to Wembley for the final of the FA Vase trophy, when is the match? Yes, we are over moon having beaten Salisbury FC in the semi-final, the first leg attracted a crowd of 4,678. The former club failed in four semi-final attempts to get to Wembley, so to achieve this in our first full season is unbelievable. The final is on Sunday May 22nd (kick-off 12.15pm against Morpeth Town), and within the first two days we sold over 6,500 tickets and we are hoping that 15,000 fans will attend to share our special day.

“ Season tickets go on sale in May.”

What are your aspirations for the future? Despite our success, our feet are firmly on the ground and the target is five promotions to reach the Football League. Each step can only be possible by keeping the club on a sustainable and financial base.

We note that Jewson sponsors the club, do you need more sponsors? We are keen to attract new sponsors. We have a variety of packages with digital advertising, perimeter advertising, player sponsorship and match day hospitality. Please feel free to call on 01432 268257 or e-mail commercial@ herefordfc.co.uk

How does the club work with the local community? We are very close to the locals as the average crown of 3,000 plus demonstrates - and to think the ground could have been lost forever. The media coverage and social media has been huge and we know that all of our fans are very proud of the club.

Are you encouraging school children and young players into the club? Yes, we are affiliated with ‘United in the Community’ who play at agrees under 10s right through to under 18s in the local Herefordshire league. We have 400 members in our junior Bulls club and five of our under 18s have played for the first team this season.

We invite a school to be the guard of honour for every home match. Our captain Joel Edwards is local lad and he visits local schools to promote us and invite the children to follow us. Plus many of our sponsors are very local to Hereford.

Do you offer season tickets? Are there incentives for this? Season tickets go on sale in May and will be competitively priced, even if do get promoted. Junior season tickets will be around £25 for the whole season which offers fabulous value. 35

In addition, season ticket holders get 10% discount on merchandise in our club shop and also get priority ticket applications for away matches. If money was no object, what would you like to do with the club? Purely from a club’s perspective, the ground has a great charm yet is very expensive to run. Therefore, I would like to redevelop the ground to improve spectator experience.

There are new kids on the block. The Beefy Boys Meat Boutique is slap bang in the middle of Hereford and, it’s fair to say, this indie restaurant is smashing it with their multi award-winning burgers. We popped along to chat with owners Murf (Anthony Murphy), Christian Williams, Daniel Mayo-Evans and Lee Symonds…

BURGER ME!

Congratulations on your success; can you tell us a bit about how you came to set up Beefy Boys? We met in our school days; four food and music loving friends from Hereford - and the concept for our restaurant originated from our summer BBQs which were very popular. In 2013 we entered the famous Grillstock ‘King of the Grill’ which is a huge two-day US style low ‘n’ slow BBQ competition with twenty-two teams from around the world battling it out over the smokey coals to be crowned ‘Grand Champion’. We came seventh that year, but the following year we won the best burger category!

“ We won the best burger category!”

Following this we were invited to the annual World Burger Championships held in Las Vegas, and we came second out of fifty teams. This led to some great publicity, including an appearance on The One Show. In 2015 we came seventh and we’ve already been invited for this year’s event in Alabama. During this time we ran a series of pop-up restaurants and provided catering for private events and festivals. The natural progression was for us to open a restaurant. What made you choose this location for your restaurant? As local boys we were determined to stay loyal to Hereford for our first restaurant, and we wanted to be in the city centre. We were approached to open on the site of the Old Market which was perfect for us. 36

“ We’re proud to source our ingredients from local producers.” And we feel very fortunate that our landlords, British Land, invited us, as an independent business, into the centre - they’ve been great, incredibly supportive. Where do you source your beef, and how important is this to you? We’re proud supporters of local businesses and source our ingredients from producers such as Neil Powell Butchers, Peter Cooks Bread and Wye Valley Brewery. Herefordshire beef is renowned for its unique flavour and marbling of the meat, so this is extremely important to us.

Aside from the Herefordshire beef, what gives your dishes the wow factor? It has to be our passion and, of course, our visits to the USA have certainly influenced our food. As well as our juicy, 100% Hereford beef burgers our customers can enjoy weekly specials and we even have veggie burgers for the non-meat eaters among us. Our aim is to keep developing our burgers for the perfect patty that you just can’t get anywhere else.

We know your restaurant is relatively new, but do you have any plans for the future? Definitely. We want to expand the business so we’re planning our second restaurant, and we’ll continue with our pop-ups and private event catering, and look out for our food truck at various festivals. For the immediate future we’ll be installing heater umbrellas at this restaurant shortly for outside dining.

We also have a bar for beers, lagers, and the usual spirits, wines and Champagne as well as our fast growing cocktail menu. Each cocktail is unique, and again we’ve worked as a team to develop cocktails that are a bit different to those usually found in most bars. And, of course, our menu wouldn’t be complete without Butty Bach from Wye Valley Brewery.

Set within a secure, gated environment, and within easy walking distance of Hereford city centre, Fryers Gate is an exclusive development of luxury apartments with stunning views over the River Wye and beyond.

LUXURY CITY LIVING

Having heard the development features a ‘living green wall’ we were keen to know more so headed to Hereford to chat with the property developer responsible for the luxury apartments, Paul Tobin of Riverside Construction Ltd. Paul, what was on the site of these apartments before you developed it? And what made you choose this site as your next project? Previously there was a restaurant, Campions, on this site, but since its closure in the mid 1990s the property had fallen into dereliction, and visitors to Hereford were greeted by a decaying building as they crossed the river bridge. It took a long time to gain permission on the site because of its sensitivity. It’s within a conservation area, and you need to consider the archaeology and ecology of the site. However, I felt it was worth persevering because of the potential and, of course, the unique location.

We understand there is a mixture of one, two and three bedroom apartments with two penthouse suites here. What features will the apartments have? That’s right, it’s a secure, gated community with a CCTV linked entry system. There are eighteen apartments in total, all of which enjoy stunning views over the River Wye and beyond. All apartments will benefit from high quality fitted kitchens with luxury granite, quartz or solid oak worktops together with SMEG appliances, Porcelanosa wall and floor tiles, shower and bathroom fittings and large south-facing balconies which have glass surrounds and are fully tiled. Luxury powder coated aluminium bi-fold doors will open from the sitting room onto the balconies ensuring maximum use of available space.

“It was worth persevering because of the potential.” 40

The whole building will be insulated to current building regulation, and fitted with powder coated aluminium double-glazed windows as standard. The latest energy-efficient Megaflow system will provide for hot water, under floor heating, and towel rails to bathroom and en-suite. Can you tell us a bit about the ‘living green wall’ and what are its benefits? Living green walls are superb eco features, more usually found in European countries and are relatively new to the UK. Essentially, as well as being more aesthetically pleasing within an urban environment, they have a lot of benefits too; by introducing greenery they reduce energy use, provide insulation and help to minimise carbon dioxide emissions. It sounds great. How many of these apartments are still available? There are currently nine apartments available and we have a fabulous

show apartment which has just been completed. This apartment is available to view by prior appointment with Hunters. To avoid disappointment if you want to reserve an apartment a deposit of £1,000 will secure it for you - and it’s a fully refundable deposit too, so no risk! When will the apartments be available to move into? We’re aiming to be finished by the end of this Summer, and once the site is 100% finished it will have a full NHBC guarantee, NHBC are the leading home warranty and standards-setter for UK house-building - hence offering peace of mind to our buyers.

And finally, what made you choose Hunters Estate Agents to market the apartments? Alison Fuller sold a property for us around fifteen years ago and we were delighted with the service she provided - she is always approachable and extremely professional. In fact, the whole team at Hunters in Hereford are excellent, and have exactly the right qualities to showcase our apartments. For more information or to arrange a viewing please contact Alison Fuller at Hunters Estate Agents in Hereford.

“There are eighteen apartments within the development, enjoying stunning views over the River Wye and Herefordshire. In addition you have Hereford city centre on your doorstep.” 41

Originally the village butchers shop and mill, the black and white timbered frame of the The Butchers Arms has stood in the village of Woolhope for hundreds of years. With a long standing reputation throughout the area as a great place to eat, locals are undoubtedly thrilled that Phil Vincent and his team are continuing that tradition.

THE BUTCHERS ARMS

Phil, what led you to take over the Butchers Arms? I am originally from Herefordshire and was looking to move back into the area when we came across The Butchers Arms. The family came to view the property and we found a Vincent (my surname) Van Gough painting on the wall, plus the view from the pub was a field of our favourite sunflowers - so it felt like fate. Practically, the kitchen was an excellent size which is important to me as a chef, and it’s location in such beautiful countryside couldn’t be beaten. We also loved the history of the pub and building; it became a pub when the butcher married a local publican’s daughter in 1867. So are we correct in thinking that you’re the Head Chef here? Yes, and I still love coming up with new recipe ideas and preparing them for our diners. I trained to be a chef straight from school and I’ve always worked in the hospitality business. I lived in Cambridge for twenty years and ran a few pubs there, winning the Village Pub of the Year in 2003.

The business is clearly a family affair, so who works with you? I’m the Head Chef and landlord, my daughter Leonie looks after front of house with her son Owen-John, and my other daughter Jemma works on our marketing and social media. Our sous chef Sophie is not strictly family, but is such an important part of the team she is as good as! What food can we enjoy here? Fish and game feature a lot, and change regularly according to the season. Popular dishes are Woolhope rabbit pie, haggis fritters, roast rump of lamb, and our green vegetable Thai curry, plus we cater for gluten free and other dietary requirements on request. Our Sunday lunch service is always popular, so much so that we have one couple who have been having roast dinner here for 45 years! We offer a very popular daily lunch menu at £8.95 per head and, of course, our evening meal is available every night apart from Sunday and Monday. 44

Do you use local produce and, if so, how important is that to you? The reputation of The Butchers Arms has been built on using quality ingredients, and we’re passionate about sourcing fresh, local produce wherever possible. We buy pork and sausages from Pork and Two Veg, plus lamb, rabbit, duck and chicken eggs from businesses right here in Woolhope. We also grow some of our own vegetables in the kitchen garden and use our own quail’s eggs. We serve fish from the sustainable fish list, which is brought to us fresh by New Wave Seafood. Behind the bar we keep local ales and ciders from Ledbury Real Ales, Wye Valley, Westons and Once Upon A Tree, all of which are very popular.

“ The reputation of The Butchers Arms has been built on using quality, local ingredients.”

Who might we bump into at the pub? Our local trade is really important to us, but we also have regulars returning from all over Herefordshire and surrounding counties. We are recommended by all the local B&B’s and campsites, and have many cyclists, walkers and their dogs dropping in! As for non-paying guests, we’re very fortunate to have woodpeckers and a variety of wildlife visiting our garden. Do you have any special events coming up? We often run themed evenings, such as our recent English Tapas Night, and feature special menus for high days and holidays. We hold summer BBQ’s on a Friday evening (weather permitting), and we also cater for parties and family celebrations. We offer exclusive hire for weddings and private functions, which can include a marquee in the garden which enables us to cater for up to 150 people. You can catch up on all that’s happening via our website, or on Facebook and Twitter.

And any plans for the future? Well, we’ve just erected a tether rail to cater for our larger four legged friends, and we are always looking for new recipe ideas to tempt customers. We’re also in the throes of expanding our vegetable garden to offer even more fresh produce grown here at the pub, and I have an idea for a duck pond! But, most of all, we are looking forward to summer, as we have plenty of outside seating for people to enjoy a drink or a meal surrounded by this glorious Herefordshire countryside. What could be better?

Peter Mace and Jemima Alexander have built their nest in Presteigne, on the Powys / Herefordshire border, creating a well-deserved reputation for delicious food in a relaxed setting.

THE DUCK’S NEST

Can you give us a bit of background info – tell us about the path that’s led you to this beautiful restaurant? My ( Jemima) background is in hospitality and Pete is a trained Chef who’s worked in France as well as the UK. We met on a hospitality training day and our shared passion for food prompted the start of our professional relationship.

Who came up with the name for the business – is there a story behind the name? The name Duck’s Nest originates from ‘The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck’ by Beatrix Potter. We loved the idea of creating a nestling, homely feel; offering comfort in the form of delicious food and togetherness in a warm and cosy environment.

We both live locally to Presteigne, and came across this building in the heart of the town’s high street, it was formerly a Greek restaurant.

What type of food do you serve here – are the ingredients locally sourced – and is that important to you? Absolutely. To shape our menu we draw inspiration from our ever changing landscape. We use seasonal, local ingredients from independent suppliers, with absolutely no brands allowed. And that stands for everything from our food to our coffee, even down to the flowers we display. Our lengthy list of suppliers has been carefully selected, we very much see our role as putting something back into the local independent market.

Within a matter of months we’d completely gutted the dining area, exposing the gorgeous original beams and wooden floorboards, and we bought the dining furniture from a local antique dealer. So from brainstorming ideas to completion, we were open for business within six months. We officially opened on April 11th of this year and haven’t looked back since.

“ A lunch to rival the best in the area, and many in London!”

Our lunch and dinner menus change every two weeks, allowing us to showcase the seasons best. Our diners can choose from a selection of seasonal meat, fish and vegetarian starters & main courses - with game, lamb, duck & salmon featuring regularly. 50

Do you have any plans for the future? We’re currently taking Christmas party bookings – and we also offer exclusive hire all year around for that special occasion. We were thrilled to be invited to take part in the Ludlow Slow Food Movement and we’re looking forward to collaborating with the luxurious Treburvurgh House in November for a Taste of Game night with a wine pairing option, along with one luxury event per month in different country venues. Moving forward, we’ll be offering outdoor catering, and next year we’ll be showcasing our restaurant at local food festivals - including the annual Presteigne Food Festival on the 18th June 2016 - the whole town is looking to work towards that one.

Well worth the travel – on the day we visited, this new restaurant was rated third out of 317 restaurants in Powys on the popular Trip Advisor site - we’re pretty sure that they’ll be number one before the year is out!

Abergavenny, in Welsh, means Mouth of the River Gavenny. Abergavenny is a market town in Monmouthshire, fifteen miles west of Monmouth on the A40 and A465 roads and is just six miles from the Welsh/ English border. Originally the site of the Roman fort, Gobannium, Abergavenny is promoted as the Gateway to Wales. Situated at the confluence of a tributary stream, the Gavenny, and the River Usk, it is almost surrounded by two mountains; the Blorenge (559m), and the Sugar Loaf (596 m), and five hills: Ysgyryd Fawr (The Skirrid), Ysgyryd Fach (Skirrid Fach), Deri, Rholben and Mynydd Llanwenarth, known locally as Llanwenarth Breast. It provides access to the nearby Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Offa’s Dyke Path is close by and the Marches Way, the Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through the town.

Wye Life caught up with Abergavenny’s local hero, Becky James, back home after winning a bronze Keirin medal at the recent World Track Cycling Championships in London. It’s been quite a whirlwind few years for Becky and finally she is back to her best and very hopeful to be selected to represent Great Britain at the Rio Olympics this summer.

BECKY JAMES GOING UP A GEAR Where did you grow up? My family has always lived in and around the Abergavenny area and I am one of six children. I grew up in Govilon and my family currently live in a converted barn on a farm in Deri Mountain. What do you love about the area in which you grew up? I love the town of Abergavenny and the surrounding countryside where I’ve spent many hours cycling. When I was younger it was great to be able to escape on my bike and cycle all over Monmouthshire, the Brecon Beacons and the Wye Valley. When did you start cycling and why? Cycling was very popular in the area. I was eleven years of age, at primary school, and decided to join after school cycling sessions with Gareth Walker. He spotted my potential and very soon after I started cycling regularly with Gareth and his son. We’re a very active family and most of my siblings cycle too.

When did you know you were good at cycling? I joined Abergavenny Road Club and started to enter mountain bike races and very quickly started winning the races; even against the boys! At thirteen, I was invited to join the Welsh Talent Team and entered their programme. This was of huge benefit to me as I was tested in all cycling disciplines such as cyclo-cross, road and track. How did you progress to such a high standard? At fifteen, I joined the Olympic development programme for track and sprint one year earlier than the normal entry. Through training camps with the British team, I was chosen to concentrate on the Sprint and Keirin events and competed in junior championships. When I was eighteen, I became a senior cyclist and was adopted into the Great Britain under 23 Academy. In 2010 I moved to Manchester where British Cycling and the GB cycling team are based, and I still live there now. 56

Describe your cycling achievements to date? At seventeen, in 2009, I won two golds and silver at the Junior European Championships. Then, the following year, I won the same medals at the Junior World Championships. In 2010 I won a silver and a bronze at The Commonwealth Games representing Wales. In 2013, I won double gold and two bronze medals at the World Championships (the only cyclist to ever win four medals in these championships), plus a silver at the Europeans. Then, in 2014, I won two bronzes at the worlds. This year (2016) I won a bronze medal competing in the Keirin at the World Championships in London. If you’re happy to, please tell us about your health problems and minor cancer scare, and how this impacted on your life… Yes of course. Well, it’s been quite a few years - in 2012 I had my appendix removed and lost my fitness, ruining any chances of competing in the London Olympics.

Then, during 2014, I was at a road camp in Majorca and cycling up the notorious Sa Calobra Mountain and, once at the top, I suffered severe pain in my knee. Over the next few months the pain continued and started to impact on my cycling. I underwent minor knee and shoulder operations and had rehab for three weeks. Unfortunately the pain reappeared in my knee and it was decided by the medics that I should have rehab rather than more surgery. I went to the national rehab centre in Bisham Abbey for intensive rehab and spent four months there, during which time I didn’t ride my bike at all. I’d also had an abnormal smear test and been told that a third of the cells in my cervix were ‘severe’. The nurse informed me about the possible threat of developing cervical cancer so, after a biopsy, I had the pre-cancerous cells removed. These past few years have been very tough, but I am pleased to say that all my problems are now behind me. It has been really hard coming back from these setbacks and,

thanks to my partner and family, I have been supported every step of the way and able to continue in the sport I love. My Bronze World Championship medal in March came as a huge surprise to me and has given me a massive boost for all of the hard work in making my comeback. The British crowd were amazing and I was very proud to bring them home a medal. With the Rio Olympics on the horizon, do you hope to feature in the GB cycling team? The selectors pick the team for Rio on June 14th and I am hoping to be selected in both the Sprint and Keirin, which would be unbelievable after this huge mental and emotional journey. I do feel that I have my spark back and I’m continuing to step up my training as, if I’m selected for Rio, I will be aiming for gold. I know I have plenty of room to improve, as I only started racing again last August and the last few months I’ve felt myself getting stronger and stronger. 57

We understand that you are George North’s partner, does it help having a boyfriend who is also in the sporting world and in the public eye? Yes, George has been a massive support and influence, having suffered a major concussion problem last year himself. Basically we have just been there for each other. George was in London to see me win my medal along with both of our families which was fantastic. The whole experience has made us both stronger and brought us confidence to be able to perform again at the highest level. We are able to spend time together in private and being in the public eye is not a problem, especially with both of us just grateful for having a second chance. Finally, what do miss about Abergavenny and would you encourage youngsters to take up your sport? I miss not being able to go out of my front door and just cycle wherever I wish in the local beautiful countryside and, of course, I miss my family too. I would highly recommend local children joining Abergavenny Road Club. When I first started, there were only thirty youngsters and now they have over 300 members. They even get to wear the same kit as me as I am still a member and, occasionally, I get the chance to come home and join in the fun. Home makeover shows have gained in popularity over the years, with the result that homeowners appreciate the benefits of a kitchen renovation. Transforming the look, as well as the value, of your home is all in a day’s work for award winning professionals Vicky and Andrew Burchell and their team.

WORLD OF K ITCHENS

Vicky, we understand that this is a family run business; can you tell us a bit more about World of Kitchens? We launched World of Kitchens back in 1996, choosing this location as we’re local to the area, and because it wasn’t part of a typical high street. Our aim then, as now, was to offer a quality independent alternative to the high street for our potential clients. As the business has grown we’ve expanded our dedicated team, we have trained our two designers Matt & Paul who have been with us 25 years between them and our son has recently joined the business.

And we hear that you’ve won quite a few awards? Yes we were thrilled to achieve Best Burbidge Showroom of the Year 2015; Burbidge has been established since 1867 and are renowned for their kitchen furniture.

How do you keep up with new ideas, products and industry advancements? We’re constantly researching trade magazines and we visit UK trade shows where we source new suppliers, particularly in lighting which can change dramatically.

Also we were the only award winning Welsh retailer in the 2009 Neff Excellence Awards, and we were runner-up in the Neff National Design Awards 2012.

And is there anything in particular that is on-trend right now? Painted kitchen doors are very popular in varying shades of grey. Having said that, not all clients want the latest

fashion; we offer everything from modern gloss kitchens to wood kitchens, all with a choice of colours. We have a good mix of modern & traditional kitchens on display and a new display is showcased every six months. What advice would you give our readers who may be planning on updating their kitchen? Word of mouth / recommendation is usually a failsafe. Choose a proven supplier with a wealth of experience, and who offers a variety of quality products backed up with excellent customer service and design, is key to the overall success of the remodel. Our whole process is project managed, from concept to completion; including electrics, plumbing, tiling and fitting.

And last but not least – do you have any plans for the future of the business? Well we’ve just launched our latest display; we have cookery demos in the pipeline, and next year will be our 20th anniversary! Look out for events and news on our Facebook page.

Many people dream of running a creative business; perhaps as an artist, designer, or sculptor even! And if you’re stuck in a hum drum job, the yearning can be very powerful. So we tip our hat to Mansel Davies who, in 1996, gave up a promising career in the financial sector to live his dream. Here Mansel shares his story…

LIFE THROUGH A LENS

I guess I decided I wanted to become a photographer back around 1996. Perhaps it was an early midlife crisis, or maybe working in financial services was enough to make me want to get out of the rat race and have a complete change. Having spent three years studying at the University of Wales, Newport I gained a first class honours in Photographic Art. So I guess this is where the story of Mansel Davies Photography really begins.

creative hub within the community. In those days I was using film cameras and was lucky to have enough space at the gallery to have a permanent darkroom where I could work the magic.

I set the business up in the Monmouthshire town of Usk, originally situated in the main street as an art gallery called ‘WhiteSpace’, and, of course, the photography business. I would run regular exhibitions at the gallery alongside the photography, and the space soon gained a reputation as a

It’s not bitterness, but more of a sense of nostalgia that I feel for the good old days. Yes, the digital world allows us to do so much more, and so much more quickly. But, sometimes, we just need to be allowed the luxury of stopping, and staring. Film photography almost imposes this on the photographer.

Since then the whole world seems to have turned upside down, with the digital age changing things beyond recognition. These days, all you need is the corner of a room to set up your computer and you can play with your digital images to your heart’s content.

66

I consider myself to be very fortunate to have such a varied lifestyle. These days my working week can include an advertising shoot in the studio or on location, or a public relations shoot for a commercial client; a presentation about my work to a school class; a portrait shoot for a budding model; or a cosy mother and child portrait; an afternoon on the computer restoring old or damaged photographs; and then, of course, finishing it off with a wedding or two on the weekend. When I get some time to myself I enjoy nothing more than a good long walk with my camera, in search of some dramatic landscape shots. When I think about my own personal photographs they often conjure up a certain solitude.

I prefer to work totally on my own in this instance, so I guess it’s inevitable the images are going to represent a reflection, almost, of the person holding the camera. I guess I feel at peace with myself and the world when I’m right there, in the moment, capturing an atmosphere or a certain light that maybe only exists for a few seconds. Creating a portrait is very similar. People think you can make a portrait with a couple of shots. Sometimes you’re lucky and get the personality straight away. However, I find it’s the people who are willing to allow you a little time with them, engage with them properly, that get the best results.

“ I’m very fortunate to have such a varied lifestyle.”

When I started my business I made sure that my immediate vicinity knew about my services. After all, it was a much smaller world then. Advertising was expensive and mainly done in hard copy in Yellow Pages, magazines etc. These days, there are many more mediums to consider. It’s all about websites, social media and, of course, word of mouth is still the best and cheapest form of spreading the word. Consequently, I am able to advertise an honest ‘distance no object’ label on my work. I really will travel anywhere - if the price is right. I realise that I can’t expect all my work to come to me so I need to be flexible and mobile. My website is of paramount importance to me, and all my advertising aims to drive people towards it. This is where most of the relevant information lies. 67

People are able to do their research before even making contact. This way, the theory is, when they get in touch, a large percentage are getting in touch to actually make a booking.

Nestling in the tranquil lower reaches of the beautiful Wye Valley, a centre for tourism since 1780, Monmouth is a very successful market town, where the strength of the retail sector is underpinned by the custom of pupils and parents of renowned educational establishments.

HIGH STREET SUCCESS

David Cummings, Chairman of Monmouth and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is passionate about the town and here, exclusively for Wye Life, David waxes lyrical about his beloved town. Good road links, and a mixture of independent and niche retailers, create an environment that produces arguably the lowest level of empty shops for any town in Wales. We attract day visitors from as far away as Cardiff, Ludlow, Bristol and Swindon, so must have the retail offering to suit all tastes! If you want Italian, Mexican, Spanish or Thai restaurants, speciality teas, wood burning stoves, homewares, housewares, haberdashery, beauticians, designer shoes, designer fashion, toys, gifts, hand-made jewellery, or even a coffee in a café in a quiet courtyard, then Monmouth is the place to visit.

Once your retail therapy is appeased, take a little while to imbibe the history of a town famous for its connections to Henry V, Geoffrey of Monmouth, the Chartists and Charles Rolls. Spare time to visit the Museum, the Castle, old Monnow Bridge and our iconic Shire Hall. In more recent times, it has been the place where the creative talents of Queen, Coldplay, Oasis, Simple Minds, Stone Roses and many more have been recorded. In 2012 Monmouth became the first Wikipedia town in the world and QR codes on the thousand plaques, seemingly around every corner, explain its history and background. If the weather is fine, rest awhile overlooking the gatehouse on old Monnow Bridge or watch the rowing boats, canoes, swans and the occasional kingfisher on the banks of the Wye. 75

Whatever your palate, retail taste or way you like to relax, I believe that Monmouth is the place to satisfy all.

Emma Cull, lives in North Cornelly near the beautiful Kenfig Hill Nature Reserve and, in our opinion, has a real talent for interior design, so when she wanted some new furniture, only bespoke would do, and that meant a call to Jack & Rose.

INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED A ND LOVINGLY CREATED

How did you hear about Jack and Rose? I was introduced to Dave from Jack & Rose through Julie Hughes of Interiors, Bridgend who has supplied our handmade curtains.

Jack and Rose made me exactly what I required, and to the size I required, to fit into my home. The wide choice of fabrics was also a massive positive; the only hard bit was to actually choose as there is so much choice.

What made you want to work with them? What I loved about the service Jack and Rose provided was to have the bespoke touch of the furniture, which I just couldn’t get in any of the other furniture shops. Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service. If I was unsure of something, Dave would bring the piece of furniture to our home allowing us to see how it would look before he went to the next stage of upholstering, which always gave us great reassurance.

What work did Jack and Rose carry out for you? My first purchase from Jack & Rose was a two seater settee to fit in our kitchen living area. From seeing the high quality of that piece of furniture, we ordered two Chesterfield style settees as part of a scheme that I was working on with Julie from interiors, who works closely with Dave. Then I bought a French bed for my little girl’s bedroom which needed some work so Jack and rose stripped, painted and re upholstered it it’s beautiful. 78

They also supplied the wallpaper to match the bed for our little girl’s bedroom. We then extended our kitchen so needed a bigger settee, so asked Dave to come and advise us on what we could have. From there we purchased two armchairs and another settee, which is very comfortable, with great child proof fabric and also looks good. We have also purchased a super king size bed, dining chairs, and had more furniture re-upholstered. Did you have your own ideas or did you work with an interior designer? Yes, I did have my own ideas of what I wanted and how I wanted the furniture to look like, but I did also get some ideas from the internet and Jack and Rose’s show room was a big help.

“Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service.”

Owner, David Waters talks a little about the history of Jack and Rose... How long has Jack and Rose been established? Jack and Rose was started by the Rowe company in 1995, supplying House of Fraser, the Rowe company had been manufacturing carpets since 1934. Jack and Rose was set up to complement this side of the business. Who are the owners of the business? We have been making the Jack and Rose furniture for the Rowe Company since 2011 and, in 2014, I acquired the brand and specialised in bespoke furniture, supplying interior designers and private clients. I am third generation in the upholstery business.

Where you happy with the end product? Definitely! We’ve been very happy with every purchase from Jack & Rose; the furniture standards are set very high and have been everything I imagined and more.

furniture from Jack and Rose after seeing and sitting on the furniture they have made for us. Dave is friendly, professional and very helpful - Jack and Rose have met all our expectations.

How long did the process take? I do take a long time to make my mind up, but as soon as I decided on what I wanted, the furniture making was around six to eight weeks.

What services do you offer? We offer a fully tailored service for both individual private clients and interior designers; any size, any shape, any material; if it involves upholstery, we can create it. For sofas, chairs and beds, we can take a drawing or a photo and create almost anything. Who would you like to work for? We would love to expand our commercial profile. We enjoy collaborating with designers when they are creating a hotel scheme or working with individual boutique hotels in creating a one-off statement piece to set a style.

Jack & Rose Banthorpe House, Crosby Yard Bridgend CF31 1JZ 01656 768844

Would you be happy to recommend Jack and Rose to friends and colleagues? Yes we’d highly recommend Jack and Rose to friends, and anyone else looking for that something special. My sister and brother have since purchased

TESTIMONIAL

Caroline Hodges shares her experience Until I was invited to review the brand new, tailor-made DECLÉOR Aromatherapy Escape Face Back and Scalp Treatment at The St David’s Hotel & Spa, my experience of spas was fairly limited to saunas and steam rooms. At age 23, I’d never had a ‘proper’ spa treatment so, of course, I jumped at the opportunity to experience one of the new treatments. It wasn’t just the chance to have a facial at a five star hotel that attracted me. Although a spa treatment novice, as a skin care fanatic I’d heard fantastic things about DECLÉOR and their unique, pioneering aromatherapy treatments.

As soon as I arrived I was greeted by my therapist, who asked me some questions about my skin to determine which of the balms and treatments my skin type needed. The treatment began with a shoulder to foot massage, with a concentration on my back to help relieve stress. Of the three available balms, Slim, Sculpt and Relax, I chose the Relax balm, which had a sweet vanilla scent. My therapist began the facial by cleansing my face of make-up and impurities. She then worked through the facial routine, which has been designed exclusively for The St David’s Hotel, which included exfoliation, Neroli aromessence balm and aroma pressures massage to help push the products into the dermis. 81

She then applied a hydrating mask to help replenish my skin while she continued the treatment with a relaxing scalp massage. To finish the treatment, she applied a moisturiser and eye cream. After the treatment, my therapist talked me through the various products she had used and why, and recommended other products that she felt my skin needed. All in all, top marks for relaxation, I will definitely be working DECLÉOR into my skincare routine. Sourcing an adequate replacement window solution for a property that sits within a conservation area can create a real headache. But if the existing windows are no longer doing their job properly, or no longer look the part, then immediate action needs to be taken. This is where Future Ideal Homes could help. We chat to Craig Harewood, Managing Director, to find out more…

W INDOWS THE WAY THEY’RE MEANT TO BE

Firstly, how long has Future Ideal Homes Ltd been established? We have over 30 years’ experience in the industry and are proud to be a family run business, which for the last ten has been run by myself and my wife Dina. Six months ago, we were introduced to Jeff Barcello, who has been in the industry for over 30 years. On chatting, we found that we had the same ambitions and ideas for the industry, Jeff liked where we were going with our business, and came on board as a Technical Advisor.

What does Future Ideal Homes offer? We supply and install aluminium windows, doors, sliding and bi-fold doors along with conservatories and orangeries. We also offer windows, doors, conservatories and garden rooms in PVC-u. Our Solidor and composite doors are very popular as are our tiled roof systems. We recently introduced our latest offering, the Residence 9 we’re very excited about that.

The twist is a modern composite material which lends itself to the sometimes frantic pace of modern living by being virtually maintenance free; no painting or staining required. As well as a stunning range of windows, our Residence 9 range can be incorporated into fabulous French, residential and composite doors, along with our range of orangeries, garden rooms and conservatories.

Tell us more about Residence 9... Residence 9 windows and doors is a clever blend of old and new. It fuses classic aesthetics with a twist of modern materials. They replicate the 19th Century flush sash timber window. Their traditional elegant flush exterior and stylish decorative interior create that classic aesthetic.

When do these especially come into their own? Residence 9 windows and doors can be used in modern homes but they truly come into their own for properties that are Listed or in a conservation area. As these properties are the most important buildings in the town and are protected nationally with specific control over alterations, it is generally more difficult to replace windows in the buildings and approval must be obtained via English Heritage.

“ We are proud to be a family run business.” 82

Many of the windows advertised as like-for-like replacements for traditional timber windows have little chance of satisfying planners. Residence 9 windows and doors have been made to recreate a modern design that imitates the 19th Century timber window, inside and out. The likeness and authenticity is uncanny. They are also far more energy efficient, secure and stylish than their equivalent counterparts.

This sounds expensive! That’s the real beauty. Wooden windows are expensive and will often cost more than Residence 9. And if you add in the regular maintenance costs over the years for wooden windows, this upkeep is both time consuming and costly. Residence 9 windows and doors need only occasional cleaning with soapy water. No painting or special maintenance is required.

Do they come in a variety of colours? A range of colours and shades to suit different architectural periods and design along with individual choices are available. 17th Century windows were oak and left unpainted, whilst 19th Century windows were always painted. Whilst Grained White is the most popular colour, we can offer other traditional colours as well as contemporary greys and pastel greens. You can also mix the outsides and the insides. It’s a real bespoke offering.

When choosing the right flooring for your home, how do you know which company to choose? We’ve made your life easier by introducing you to a carpet and flooring company which has been covering the floors of many a Cardiff home since 1979. We met with Victoria Stedman of Leeway Carpets and Flooring Co to find out more.

LEEWAY CARPETS

A ND FLOORING

Who are the owners of the business Victoria? The directors of the company are John G W Davies, Lynne Davies and Luke Stoneman. Leeway Carpets was formed in 1979 and incorporated in 1999. What does Leeway offer? We offer a comprehensive service of all aspects of flooring in the commercial and home owner sector. This includes carpets, luxury vinyl tiles, commercial vinyl flooring and wood floors. We also specialise in bespoke products which are unusual in colour and design; to make a special floor for someone who is looking for something unique and individual.

What type of customers does Leeway attract? We see customers who are mostly looking for great personal service, and peace of mind that the work will be carried out on time and with the least disruption. We also offer a service for rental home owners and landlord clients who are working to a budget. Please describe your product range… On the domestic side, we carry s amples from patterned traditional Axminsters and Wiltons through to twist pile, loop pile, stripes and variations of tufted carpets. 86

From solid wood floors to engineered wood floors, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) in wood effect and ceramic tile effect. Bespoke rugs and anti-skid rug underlay. There’s almost nothing we can’t source or supply. What trends to you see emerging? We’re getting lots of requests for luxury vinyl tiles and, by way of carpets, we’re seeing lots of stripes, plains and plaids. The retro trend is strong too, so we’re seeing some 60s and 70s designs making a comeback.

“ There’s almost nothing we can’t source or supply.”

“We offer a comprehen- sive service of all aspects of flooring in the commercial and home owner sector.”

How do you keep on track with styles and trends? The carpet and tile industry is a lot like the fashion industry. We’re always looking to offer something that little bit different from the rest and keep abreast of industry fashion and trend news. What kind of contract work to you do? There is a strong market for contract work and we’re lucky to be working with Asda Superstores, Brains Pubs, Punch Taverns, catering for all aspects of their demands. We welcome the opportunity to work with more interior designers. We do do enjoy it.

JANET We offer clients a holistic approach which includes business development advice, business coaching, tax planning, inheritance tax, trusts and wealth management. We help them at every stage from starting a business to their exit strategy, ensuring they maximise results and protect and retain as much of their income as possible throughout. Alongside this we provide routine compliance services such as Accounts, Tax, VAT and Payroll. NEIL At this time of year many people are panicking because their tax affairs aren’t in order, the 31st January deadline is looming and they are facing potential hefty tax bills or late filing penalties. Our advice to anyone worrying about this, whether you’ve been too busy or you’ve forgotten, is there’s still time to organise things, but you do need to act quickly.

Find yourself an accountant who will not only help you now, but won’t let you fall behind again. You must know your tax liabilities and how your business is doing in real-time to capitalise on opportunities or nip any problems in the bud. If all your accountant is concerned about is meeting the tax deadline and avoiding fines, how will you ever know how you are really doing? What type of clients do you work with? JANET We work with small or medium expanding businesses, giving them business and tax advice, growth strategies and structures that allow them to enjoy the success their hard work deserves without sacrificing the life they want. We act for a full range of professions; from surveyors to electricians and restaurants to hairdressers, high net worth individuals and several celebrities (sorry no names)! We find that whatever sector they operate in, business owners often face the same issues running their business and that’s where we can help. Do you have expertise in a particular sector? NEIL Our dental and healthcare clients make up about 40% of our businesses. This specialist knowledge has been developed over thirty years and is embedded in our systems. Through our reputation as healthcare specialists we also have strong links with healthcare specialist bank managers, solicitors, IFAs (independent financial advisors) and many other professionals, which means we have the contacts to help our clients succeed, whatever they need.

What do you think sets Lewis Ballard apart from other accountants? JANET Our approach for our clients differs from many other accountants. For a start, we don’t just give them the numbers; we explain what they mean and how to improve them. Our main focus though is adding value to their business and balance to their lives, by asking them what they want and finding ways to help them achieve it. NEIL If business is great, but they want more family time, we help them to build a business that allows them to do so. If, on the other hand, they are happy with their social time and want to concentrate on building a healthy bank balance, we help them to maximise their profits and if, like many people, it’s a bit of both, we help with that too! JANET We look at six areas of balance; Business Balance - to provide up to date figures, Tax Balance - strategies to minimise tax, Saleable Balance - to build a profitable business to sell, Life Balance - to ensure clients enjoy their success, Personal Financial Balance - to reduce personal debt and build personal wealth and Retirement Balance - to provide enough for a comfortable retirement. We are very conscious that we deal with real people and life changes, so we are flexible and offer what they want and need now and look at what they’ll want and need in 10 or 20 years too. People need different things at different stages, so we tailor our services to fit their needs, however we find the sooner they think about the whole picture the more successful they are across their life.

88

Why are you based in Pentwyn? NEIL We moved to Pentwyn in 2004 when we outgrew our Llandaff offices. It’s ideal for us as it’s so close to the M4 and A48 or all our clients, both local and throughout the UK. and we have onsite parking for our clients and team. We originally had one third of the building but, by 2012, we were bursting at the seams again so we took the plunge and bought the whole unit.

Since taking over fully in November 2009, we have been very focussed on the welfare and training of our team and recently achieved the Investor in People Gold accreditation and ACCA platinum trainer status. We already have a very technical team of qualified Chartered Certified accountants, two Chartered Tax advisors, a Certified Payroll manager, AAT and five part-qualified ACCA accountants to provide expert advice.

We now have lovely new offices, training rooms and meeting rooms for hire and five rental offices too. It has really increased the range of services we can offer, with regular seminars and training to help them grow their business, and wealth and property talks to help them create secure, successful futures.

However we also ensure they are trained as business advisors too, as although it’s important to ensure accuracy in the figures, it’s just as important to know what they mean and where improvements can be made. We aim to have a minimum of ten trained business advisors who will have a huge impact on the local economy by ensuring businesses succeed and prosper. We also aim to train local people and not outsource like many of our competitors as we believe employers have an obligation to put back into their communities.

Where do you see the company in the future? JANET We see our team growing by at least another 50% within the next three years as our clients’ expand and need more support and, also, as we take on new clients looking to dramatically improve their results. We are continually looking to develop the range of services we offer and intend to further expand this. Our team are trained in Kashflow, Xero and Openbooks cloud accounting systems, as we see cloud accounting as the best way to help clients stay up to date and ahead of their competitors and we see more and more clients going this way. Online technology is one of the exciting ways our industry is developing.

Please tell us about your awards… NEIL We are really delighted to have our hard work recognised. We recently submitted several case studies to a national competition organised by AVN and sponsored by Xero, showing the impact we have on our clients lives and, as a result, we are now officially ‘The UK’s Most Inspiring Accountants’ and we also came back from the national accountancy conference as the ‘AVN firm of the year’.

“ We work with clients right across the UK and have many in Monmouthshire and Herefordshire.” 89

JANET After raising nearly £80,000 for Velindre Cancer hospital in the last 5 years Neil and I are proud to be Velindre Ambassadors and we aim to reach our £100,000 target in 2016, by holding another charity dinner on 5th March 2016 and completing (hopefully) the five day Ride the Rockies cycle challenge in September 2016. NEIL In 2012 we also became the first Welsh business to join B1G1, a global organisation of businesses that support over 600 charities worldwide. We link a different charity to each service we give and every time a client buys we give. It’s great to have such recognition, but what really makes us tick is seeing our clients succeed and our team develop. So many business owners work ridiculous hours with no holidays, just to survive, so when we help them build a business that really works and gives them the life style they deserve, we know we are making a real difference. Successful businesses create jobs and impact on the economy- it’s a win-win that we are proud to be part of and our door is always open to anybody struggling in business and looking to change things - just give us a call and that change can start today.

One of the joys of working on Wye Life is meeting new and interesting people with a story to tell. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson welcome us into their beautiful home.

OPEN HOUSE

We were shown around their home but the stand-out room for us was the gorgeous kitchen, incorporating a beautiful super-wide set of aluminium bi/fold doors by Alexander James Bi-fold. How did you hear about Alexander James Bi-folds? I heard about AAI through a fitter that my brother and I were using on another project we are currently working on. Having gone to great lengths to source two sets of bi-folds for that particular project, I was fairly confident that I was already getting the best deal and service around. However, one telephone conversation followed by an emailed quotation from Andrew proved me wrong.

“We are absolutely delighted with the completed extension, the design is flawless.

AAI were then contracted by me to supply a five metre set of aluminium bi-folding doors in charcoal grey which would ultimately become the predominant feature of a full-width single-storey extension to the rear of my own property in Penarth. What made you want to work with AAI? As partners who have rather fallen into building and property development, my brother and I pride ourselves on the high standard of the tradesmen, subcontractors and suppliers that we have built up over the last ten or so years. Quality, and reliability are essential, that and a very tightly controlled budget.

How did the project go? This being my own property, and what with a young family in residence throughout the build, scheduling was also of paramount importance, [especially given the fact that the project spanned the winter months!]. For this reason, and in conjunction with AAI, we elected to install the doors prior to knocking the original back wall of the house down. The compromise was that great care had to be taken to protect them throughout the job. This was easily offset by the benefit of the natural light it afforded, the insulation and also the facility to fold away the opening in order to disperse vast quantities of dust!

Generally speaking any project which includes a set of bi-folds implies a finish of a highly considered nature. The design is absolutely key. For this we are extremely fortunate to have the expert services of my sister-in-law Abigail Grummitt, whose website speaks for itself.

Were you pleased with the overall effect? We are absolutely delighted with the completed extension, the design is flawless. It is a dream open-plan space which also includes a separate utility room in which to shut away

boots, shoes, coats and all the other paraphernalia of modern day life, as well as providing an all-important second back door. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? Having exposed the chimney breast and installed a multi-fuel stove, this winter has been the cosiest on record; you cannot beat a real fire! Come the summer we are looking forward to entertaining on the patio our new doors neatly folded away. Furthermore, my wife has developed considerable flair when it comes to interior design, even though she will hate me for writing it! Would you be happy to recommend them to friends and colleagues? Moving forward Andrew and his team at AAI have become a much appreciated asset to our extensive team and future collaborations both on our own work and that of private clients is certain.

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

Chamber choir and Jeweller strike a chord

A fine example of collaboration between small businesses and promotion of the arts on a local level in Hereford can be found in the mutually beneficial partnership of Hereford Chamber Choir and Henryka. Henryka Amber & Silver Jewellery is a British brand specialising in designing and creating amber and silver jewellery pieces, which are inspired by Britain’s wildlife. The apple, synonymous with this part of the world and the new logo of HCC caught the attention of Henryka’s owner who saw a design opportunity. Anna commented “It was a pleasure to be asked by the Chamber Choir to

design and create a piece of jewellery to resemble their logo of an apple; a piece that will fit in amongst our ‘inspired by nature’ collection very well. We look forward to growing our partnership with the choir.” A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of this piece will be donated to the Chamber Choir. www.herefordchamberchoir.org.uk www.henryka.co.uk

Due to the huge success of Woods of Whitchurch, the famous pit stop in the gorgeous Herefordshire countryside, owner Lucy Gardner has just opened her second venture: Woody’s Coffee Shop. Featuring an art gallery, this indie café will be conveniently located above Lucy’s current venue, Woods.

DARE TO DREAM

It’s lovely to see you again Lucy, what led you to launch Woody’s Coffee Shop? It’s mainly down to the huge success of Woods of Whitchurch. When I originally bought the premises, I always dreamed that one day we would open a hub for local people to meet in a relaxing setting. In fact, my mother Valerie sparked the idea, and saw the potential - even naming it Woody’s. Sadly she passed away in 2013, and I made a promise to her that one day, in the future, we would open Woody’s and so she’s been my inspiration throughout. We’re very much looking forward to welcoming customers, old and new, to our latest venue. What food and drinks will we be able to enjoy at Woody’s? As you’d expect from us, our food will be homemade and locally sourced wherever possible. We’ll serve a variety of teas, coffees, soft drinks and, of course, our homemade cakes. During the day we’ll have light bites, a hot dish of the day, soup, a build your own sandwich bar with a choice of bread from our bread basket, a sweet and savoury tart of the day, fish and chips every Friday afternoon, a raclette every Sunday, and breakfasts on weekends and during school holidays.

Tell us about the arts and crafts at Woody’s? We have a resident artist, Amanda Hamilton, her quirky watercolours are showcased here; the large mural featuring Woody the squirrel is painted by local artist Nette Ingram, and we’ll feature a guest artist each quarter. In addition we’re holding various evening classes such as wood carving, jewellery, cribbage, pottery and painting. We’ll host children’s story time for the toddlers and fun bingo for the older children - parents can relax and have a coffee.

Plus we’re waiting for our license application to be approved. Watch this space. Please contact Lucy on 01600 891021 for class bookings and to enquire for private hire.

“ As you’d expect from us, our food will be home made and locally sourced wherever possible.”

It sounds great. We understand that Woody’s is available for private hire, can you tell us a little about that? Yes we can cater for up to thirty people during the evenings, and we’ve already taken bookings for May. We can offer catering, and help with planning any celebration/private event. Do you have any plans for the future? So Woody’s is definitely expanding… Yes. Woody’s will be expanding, with French windows and a balcony to overlook a new planned landscape garden. THANK YOU Thanks for taking the time to read this edition of Wye Life magazine. Wye Life is the Vale Of Usk & Wye Valley’s premier lifestyle magazine. We print 10,000 copies of each edition and cut no corners on design, production and the quality of our print. Talking about printing, we source pretty much everything locally, and over 95% of Wye Life’s turnover is reinvested back into the community of South Wales. If you have a business and are interested in promoting your goods or services to an aspirational audience in the Vale Of Usk & Wye Valley then Wye Life is almost certainly right for you. P ROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS We value our advertisers. We appreciate the trust they place in us by promoting their businesses in our magazines. With our local partners, we currently publish a range of high quality quarterly titles across Wales. You can advertise your business from as little as £35 per season in this magazine. Pick-up-ability! Our magazines aren’t like other magazines. They have real pick-up appeal - in fact, they really do go like hot cakes. Quality comes first... along with the environment. We’re passionate about quality. The magazines are beautifully written and designed, and printed locally in South Wales on high quality paper (and no nasty varnishes or lamination we’re as green as green can be). Quality distribution to an affluent, aspirational audience... We distribute our magazines to over 1,000 carefully selected outlets across South Wales. We’d love to have your business on board. If you’d like to promote your business or service in our magazines, please get in touch, we’d love the opportunity to work with you.

In Business Wales’ premier magazine for people in business. This is the kind of publication people in business want to read; interesting, inspirational and aspirational.
