WELCOME
Welcome to the wonderful winter edition of Wye Life. With Christmas not far away, this issue is all about celebration.
www.wyelifemag.co.uk 0845 130 6452
As some of our many thousands of readers will know, Chepstow is set for a predicted boom in footfall as both Severn crossings tolls will cease on Monday 17th December. Hence no cost to get into Wales (even though it’s definitely worth paying for!).
Passionate about the Vale of Usk and Wye Valley We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Wye Life magazine is written, designed and printed locally for the people of the Vale of Usk and Wye Valley.
To celebrate we’ve got some of the best independents showcasing their talents and wares in our Chepstow ‘Toll Free’ feature.

Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Wye Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £10 including postage and packing.
Also, this issue, we’re featuring our first Teme Valley town of Tenbury Wells and close Herefordshire neighbour, Bromyard (my home town). With their Christmas light switch-ons looming, both of these brilliant towns look quaint under the festive lights. Packed with independents and the Regal Theatre a fabulous gem in the heart of Tenbury.
Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Wye Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Usk, Wye Valley and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

BLANK CANVAS A NTIQUES One of Ross-onWye’s most iconic buildings, having been an antiques shop five decades or more, is now home to an Aladdin’s Cave of fine quality, unique British country house antiques. An antiques business of 30 years’ standing, Blank Canvas Antiques offers an array of carefully selected, unadulterated, genuine antique items, eg. mirrors, sofas, armchairs, lamp tables, dining tables, bookcases, beds, lighting, and lots more - all of which are beautiful, original and selected with an eye for the aesthetic. Whether it is a single item you are looking for, or a complete house project, they offer unparalleled quality and service. The showroom is run by Marylene Bourasseau, who has plenty of experience in the antiques trade and can answer most enquiries. Marylene is passionate about the showroom, and has a great eye for interiors, which she uses to ensure it maintains its ‘look’, which is about showing off the beauty of the items, whilst retaining some informality, thus enabling people to feel comfortable having a leisurely browse. 10
Andy Gibbs, who sources the antiques, has a fantastic knowledge and an eye for rare, unusual and beautiful items, which sets Blank Canvas Antiques apart from the crowd.
Originating from the Tudor period, this wonderful timber-framed building is a former merchant’s house, and is the perfect space to showcase Blank Canvas Antiques’ large and diverse stock.
They are popular with private buyers, interior designers and the antiques trade alike – this is because their approach to sourcing and selling the best, most unusual items has meant that they have built up a reputation as dealers of great quality. They supplied The Landmark Trust with a 17th Century refectory table for their Llwyn Celyn project, as recently mentioned in The Sunday Times Homes section. In fact, they have been recommended as dealers to buy from in two separate Sunday Times supplements this year.
The showrooms in Ross-on-Wye are a one-stop shop for discerning clients – after all, few of us have the time to waste searching and scouring the British Isles for these hidden gems.
Their new showroom, at 23-24 Brookend Street, Ross-on-Wye is one of Ross’ most iconic and recognisable buildings.
Mirrors are a speciality, with a wide range of shapes and sizes available. Most are in original country house condition and left for the client to restore, if required.
Among some of the items in stock are a large pair of 19th Century Gothic Revival oak bookcases removed from Salisbury Cathedral library, where they had been housed for the past 140 years, and have now been restored to their former glory. Not all their items are 15ft long! A large selection of superb quality table lamps and lanterns are also available, along with some excellent quality glass and gilt brass chandeliers, all rewired, PAT tested and ready for their special home. 11

Expect a warm welcome, a great selection of local ales and ciders, and an interesting and eclectic wine list, as well as stunning locally-sourced food. The menu changes daily and focusses on what’s in season, but the reviews since re-opening earlier in 2018 have been stunning.
THE STOCKTON CROSS
If you haven’t visited The Stockton Cross in the lovely village of Kimbolton for a while, then you’re in for a treat! After an extensive but sensitive refurbishment, this lovely old half-timbered inn has kept its traditional interior, but added a hint of style and quirkiness. Just 5 minutes from Leominster and less than 15 minutes from Ludlow, the Stockton Cross is already attracting visitors from the surrounding areas.
For Christmas, the Stockton Cross is offering an amazing menu with items such as celeriac, hazelnut & truffle soup and venison wellington, as well as the more traditional offerings of turkey and homemade Christmas pudding. “Yet again a smashing evening at the Stockton. Gorgeous food, the belly pork is to die for, as is the confit duck. Everyone is so charming and friendly. Service is great. Thanks for giving us our pub back.”
It’s unusual these days to find a pub which manages to combine amazing quality food with its role as a local pub. The Stockton Cross manages this with ease – you’ll find locals drinking at the bar as well as diners who have heard the good news about the food and who pack the dining area most evenings (booking is definitely advisable).

THE BAITING HOUSE Since re-opening in 2016, The Baiting House has gone from strength to strength, winning awards along the way. It’s everything the modern country pub should be – warm, welcoming and stylish.
Much of the acclaim has been for the 2 AA Rosette food cooked by head chef Charles Bradley and his team, who have gained The Baiting House a rare inclusion in the Good Food Guide. There is also an amazing selection of well-kept local ales and ciders (gaining an entry in this year’s Good Pub Guide to prove it), as well as a well-chosen and sensibly priced wine list.
The Baiting House also offers stunning accommodation: six lovely bedrooms, as well as five luxury lodges with hot tubs, set in a 2-acre field in the pub’s extensive grounds. These lodges have been virtually fully booked from the day they opened and have attracted lots of repeat visitors. They were awarded the 2017 Visit Herefordshire Award in the self-catering category.

THE ADMIRAL RODNEY This lovely old hillside inn has been transformed by an imaginative and sensitive refurbishment, which has turned it into a comfortable yet luxurious countryside hideaway.
The Admiral Rodney Inn in Berrow Green, near the pretty village of Martley, just north of Worcester, had been closed for several years when it was bought by local couple Andrew Cornthwaite and Kate Lane. Having transformed The Baiting House at Upper Sapey, Kate and Andrew knew that the Admiral Rodney had the makings of a stunning country inn.
They set about refurbishment, and the result has to be seen to be believed. The Admiral Rodney is now a smart country hideaway serving a varied menu of freshly-cooked local dishes. The outside space is really special. The gardens to the front sit underneath a beautiful old cherry tree. The space at the rear is in a courtyard setting, but just as spectacular. 13
There is also a large function room which can seat up to 60 and is proving very popular for private parties, weddings, etc. The Admiral Rodney Berrow Green, Martley, Worcestershire WR6 6PL 01905 886181 www.admiral-rodney.co.uk

The Christmas season is almost upon us, and here at Blandfords we are busy looking for the perfect books for Christmas. With many to choose from, here are a few suggestions.
BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS Four-legged Therapy A perfect book for the animal lover, discover the joys of unconditional love and how the best lessons can come from a pet. From Hensioners who look after ex battery hens to the collie who knows how to make people smile. The healthy habits we can learn from our Furry, fluffy, scaly and sometimes stinky companions who are just waiting to sit in our lap.
Here’s one I made earlier Classic Blue Peter Makes The Almanac “A seasonal guide to 2019” by Lia Leendertz
This is great for Young and Old, it will awaken the inner child in you with an affectionate celebration of favourite makes from Blue Peter over the last 60 Years.
A follow up to last years it reinvents the tradition of a rural almanac for a new audience, has the weight and feel of a traditional almanac with practical information that gives you access to the outdoors and the seasons. I’ve only had my copy a month and already its wellthumbed.
Who can forget the iconic Advent Crown, made from coat hangers, candles and flame-retardant tinsel. Or the luxury Cat basket made from a washing up bowl. Plus, of cause the instructions for Blue Peters very own Tracy Island and I’m still trying to get the double sided sticky tape off the kitchen table.
Snow in the garden by Shirley Hughes We loved this from the moment we saw it, beautiful anthology for little ones excited for the Magic of Christmas. Spend wintery days making Gingerbread snowmen, red robin decorations and reading these stories and poems to snuggled up by the fire. A perfect introduction to this very special time of year and the must-have gift for Christmas.
Be a Sloth by Sarah Ford We can’t wait for January when we can escape the Christmas madness, live life in the slow lane, binge on box sets and take long naps between reciting inspirational sloth mantras.
A merry Christmas from us all at Blandfords in Ledbury, Hereford and Broadway, look forward to seeing you and remember all books are available from us and all good independent bookshops. Blandfords of Broadway, Hereford, Ledbury 01531 631567 16

Resident artist at Trumpet Corner Tearoom and Gallery (where she has a studio, and from where you can see her working on both a large and small scale), Caroline Green responds to varied subject matter with a loose and expressive style. Whether landscape, animals or still life, Caroline uses a variety of mediums for her artworks, which tend to have a great vibrancy of colour.
CAROLINE H. GREEN
In 2013, Caroline returned to her old stomping ground in Cheltenham (where she had studied for a B.A. in Fine Art in the seventies), and studied for an M.A. in Fine Art. Her new work, as a result, tends to be more abstract, though she will also work in a more traditional style. Since her move to Ledbury, she has embraced this beautiful area and is inspired to paint its black and white buildings and the surrounding Malvern Hills. This year has also been particularly busy for her. As a wild card, she took part in Sky Landscape Artist of the Year and was also featured on Countryfile, painting Blenheim Palace with Winston Churchill and his dog in the foreground! Both were wonderful experiences which will stay with Caroline for a long time. Her other love is writing and illustrating children’s books about her dog Oscar and his adventures. Self-published, she has written six stories about her mischievous mutt and enjoys sharing them with young and old alike.

This stylish, independent coffee house, with a sister premises in Bromyard, is outdoing the chains by offering an unparalleled, relaxed café experience, with artisan coffees and teas, homemade cakes and light lunches.
THE SNUGG - LEDBURY
Owned by Lorna, who has injected a great deal of passion and an ethical ethos into her businesses, this new coffee shop is going from strength to strength. The focus here is on a truly dynamic coffee experience, with a heavy emphasis on local sourcing from independent suppliers, and environmentally sustainable practices and packaging. All the ingredients at The Snugg are sourced locally, and none of the coffees, artisan teas or syrups (sourced from a supplier in Worcestershire) can be found on supermarket shelves. Even the milk they use is local! The freshly ground coffee has mellow caramel undertones, making for a delicious, smooth drink, made even more special by the addition of their traditional, nonhomogenised milk. The lunches at The Snugg are also delicious. You will find a menu featuring fresh, home-made cake, paninis, toasties and soups. The glutenand dairy-free soups are a speciality, with traditional flavours such as lentil and bacon available alongside the likes of curried vegetable, or cheesy cauliflower and pasta – all warming, hearty and yummy. In fact, at The Snugg, you will find anything up to 15 flavours of home-made soup available at any one time.
All drinks and food on the menu are also available to take away, in environmentally friendly/compostable packaging. The café space at The Snugg is an eclectic mix of tables and comfy chairs, arranged in a smart yet informal way, to make for a truly relaxed environment. 21

In a world where photographs are two-a-penny and the Smart Phone is king, it’s good to know that the traditional benefits of art are still in demand. Since establishing a studio in Ledbury in 2015, Old Ash Art has gone from strength to strength, capturing some of the most beautiful images of animal life to be found in the area.
OLD ASH A RT
The Art of Capturing Souls… Rachel Drury, proprietor and inspiration behind the project, has an innate ability to capture that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’, an ability that has propelled her to the front of her profession. Art can be a work of delicate perfection, yet devoid of the life force required when capturing a subject – particularly someone’s pet - whereas Rachel unconsciously connects with the subject and produces works of intimate vivacity, capturing the soul of the subject and laying it bare in her inimitable style. The run-up to Christmas is a busy time at Old Ash Art but commissions are always welcomed - why not request a quotation and a ‘Promise of Portrait’ for the New Year - an ideal gift and something to look forward to in the gloomy, post-Christmas months. Rachel Drury is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Artist in Residence at The Malthouse Café and Gallery and currently taking a Fine Art degree at Hereford College of Arts. She has worldwide acclaim, with works currently hanging in London, Milan, France, Germany and Tasmania.

The popular Oak Inn is nestled in the heart of the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, not far from the glorious Malvern Hills, and offers delicious food and a friendly atmosphere. This traditional free house also boasts four luxury en-suite B&B rooms.
THE OAK INN AT STAPLOW
A country inn dating back to the 1600’s, the Oak Inn can be found a mere two miles north of Ledbury. There are two cosy bar and dining areas with log fires, flagstone floors and glorious old oak beams decorated traditionally with local hops. The informal restaurant offers a varied menu seven days a week. The Oak Inn prides itself on its focus on the freshest locally-sourced ingredients from the highest quality food producers and sustainable fisheries. Three real ales and a guest beer are always available, and they have been in The Good Beer Guide since 2009. The Oak Inn also hosts great live music events (see their website for details). With special Christmas party menus, and Christmas Eve carol singing, this is the perfect meeting place for the festive season, too. All these factors make the atmosphere of the Oak Inn that of a quintessential country inn, where you can dine, relax with a real ale, and, if you wish, settle down for the night in one of their luxurious guest rooms.

One of the new independent gems of Ledbury High Street, Shelagh and Katie’s clothing, accessories and homewares business, TUSK Collection, is going from strength to strength. Showcasing a wide range of effortlessly stylish products, there truly is something for everyone here.
TUSK COLLECTION
TUSK collection is a family run concept store on bustling Ledbury High Street, promoting relaxed living. Opened in November 2017, mother and daughter duo, Shelagh and Katie, designed the shop to feel calm and inviting, with a selection of products fit for any room in your home. Having graduated with a textiles degree from university in Edinburgh, Katie developed the TUSK collection clothing brand, with comfort and style at the forefront, and soon grew the collection to include accessories. This naturally led on to a wider selection of exclusive styles of clothing and jewellery.
Now with the shop front as a base in Ledbury, TUSK Collection has sourced and expanded the range to include pieces both Shelagh and Katie love, including a mix of French rustic inspired and Scandinavian homeware, silver and gold jewellery, and letter-pressed stationery, all with a relaxed feel. Visit the shop to discover the everevolving collection, including work from local designers and pieces from talents afar. You can also buy their products online via their stylish website. For him, for her, for home. 25

SACK & SUGAR DESIGNS Founded in 2013 by Nathan Tong, a highly-skilled carpenter from the beautiful village of Pembridge, Herefordshire, Sack and Sugar Designs specialises in designing and building unique hand-crafted kitchens. Nathan offers individual advice and expertise on a wide variety of kitchen styles and finishes, with focus always being firmly centred on the client’s specifications and needs.
Nathan studied at Art College, where his vision of becoming a furniture maker first began to evolve. He joined a world-recognised oak framing business when he was 19, and this is where he learnt his craft and where his natural talent as a carpenter emerged. Fast-forward to the present day, and Nathan has developed his own style which centres on making the highest standard of quality kitchens, using the best materials available, whilst always keeping the client’s vision and needs at the forefront.
Whether it’s modern, shaker, traditional or classic, Sack and Sugar Designs are able to offer you a kitchen that is planned, designed, built and fitted using the finest materials, the most detailed craftsmanship and the utmost care. The cabinet carcasses are all built with oak-faced birch ply, meaning the interior of the cupboards are just as much a part 28
of the kitchen as the exterior, and it is this unique characteristic that sets their kitchens apart from any others.
the client desires, Nathan will deliver, making this exclusivity a distinctive selling point.
The kitchens themselves are built using accoya wood as standard. Accoya is the highest quality of wood available on the market. It absorbs no moisture, which means no shrinkage and no warping, making the furniture long-lasting and of exceptional quality.
Whilst kitchens are the primary focus of the business, Nathan also designs and makes individual handcrafted furniture and structures, once again ensuring the customer’s needs are met exactly.
Meticulous attention to detail ensures that the client receives the highest level of service, coupled with Nathan’s mastery of design and carpentry. He works very closely with each individual customer and, together, they perfect the design, bringing the vision to life using 3D elevations. Using modern materials in a traditional manner, what sets Sack and Sugar Designs apart from other companies is Nathan’s vision and his unique approach. With a real passion for design innovation and individuality, whatever

THE OLD BOOT
AT WELLINGTON
At the heart of Herefordshire, just a stone’s throw off the A49, a village pub is bucking the trend, creating an innovative, community hub where the great coffee competes with wine, beer and spirits and the food attracts people from miles around.
As The Old Boot at Wellington is approaching its 1st birthday, its regular events and vibrant atmosphere provide a great backdrop for visitors to the village to relax and enjoy the food and drink throughout the day, and members of the local community can enjoy each other’s company. With a menu that spans great British pub food and gourmet choices, a wide choice of the best local and national ales and ciders alongside tantalising gins, vodkas and whiskeys, this gem is an enticing destination. The Old Boot is now building on the successes of its first year with a new chef, Mickey Osedo, joining the team at the beginning of November. Historically, the village of Wellington had six pubs, but, in the Spring 2017, the last of them, the Wellington Inn as it was, called time for the final time. 30
The restaurant had been a real success in the past and when it closed the village felt the loss. Andy Churcher and Chris Tipping who live in the village and now own The Old Boot at Wellington saw an opportunity and had faith that such business could once again be successful.
Chris reflects, “It was very sad for the village when the Wellington Inn closed. It’s easy to take things for granted until they’re no longer there, and many village pubs are suffering the same fate. Wellington has such a vibrant and active community life, and the building itself holds such a prominent spot in the middle of the village street, we firmly believed that as long as the pub has the needs of the local community at its heart, it could be a thriving success”. Andy and Chris set about investing in the pub to turn it into a community hub.
“We had a lot of support from people in the village who shared their expertise with us and who kept us motivated when this seemed too hard or too crazy an idea to pull off. We called in favours, leant heavily on our families and friends, and worked long hours to get everything done.” Andy continued, “It was on opening night when we actually realised the significance of what we had done; the Old Boot was heaving with members of the community, and the number of times we heard the words ‘we haven’t seen you for ages’ showed just how important this village pub is.”
“The Old Boot is now building on the successes of its first year with a new chef, Mickey Osedo.”

Nestled in the heart of Monmouthshire, in the quiet village of Shirenewton, you will find The Tredegar Arms, a lovely country inn and restaurant, with two newly-decorated en-suite B&B rooms.
TREDEGAR A RMS Julie Godwin, the landlady and chef at The Tredegar Arms, was eager to tell me what’s been happening at her fabulous bar and restaurant…
So, Julie, what’s new at The Tredegar Arms? Rather excitingly, we have just refurbished our two en-suite boutique B&B rooms. They’re individually decorated in a clean, relaxed style, and they offer amazing views across to the River Severn. We also allow small dogs in one of our B&B rooms. And how is Christmas taking shape? We are now taking bookings for Christmas. We have two dining areas – one by the bar, and, on the other side of the building, a restaurant, which is a bigger space where we can accommodate larger groups. 36
SHIRENEWTON What culinary delights do you have to offer diners over the festive period? We have an exciting new Christmas menu, available from 30th November, which includes (alongside the traditional Christmas roast) such delights as smoked salmon and dill mousse with tiger prawns, pea shoots and a Bloody Mary sauce; and rolled pork loin stuffed with mushroom and redcurrant, served with dauphinoise potatoes, chantenay carrots and apple cider sauce. Desserts include Christmas pud with brandy sauce, mulled fruit sundae, and salted caramel cheesecake.
Sounds delicious. And you have a new autumn menu too, I understand? Yes, we have a great new autumn menu. I’ve been the chef at The Tredegar Arms for the past seven years, and I love to be creative with the menus.
Our autumn menu offers something for everyone, from more traditional (yet delicious) dishes such as soup of the day, or beef short rib, to an exciting game tagine or yummy moules marinières. Our food is all seasonal, cooked fresh, and sourced locally where possible – we call it hearty, yet refined! This all sounds perfect. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us? We have a homely atmosphere, with an open fire, and a traditional country pub feel. However, we try to do things with a twist, and it is this that sets us apart, and is why people come to us from afar, and return to us again and again. We are also exceptionally dogfriendly. We have a regularly-rotated selection of Cask Mark-accredited real ales, and are part of Timothy Taylor’s Championship Club. 37
“I love to be creative with the menus.”
We also stock a wide selection of gins. We are situated on Cycle Route 4, and there are amazing walks through the local countryside and woodlands, so we’re really popular with cyclists and walkers, and having the B&B rooms is a great bonus. As ever, we look forward to greeting customers old and new! Please call or email for our Christmas menu. Booking is recommended, and essential on Sundays, when we serve our legendary roasts between 12.00 and 6.00pm.

THE FOUNTAIN INN
Just outside Tenbury Wells town centre, in a stunning semi-rural setting, this very quaint and picturesque black & white inn has a bar, a popular restaurant, a function room and B&B rooms. The Fountain Inn can be found on the Worcestershire/Shropshire border, just over a mile outside of Tenbury Wells. There are 10 bedrooms available for B&B, and, whatever your reason for visiting, this is quality accommodation at reasonable rates. Corporate rates are also available upon request. For that special occasion, they have a luxury/ bridal suite with a four-poster bed and en-suite jacuzzi bath. The Fountain Inn is only 10 miles from Ludlow, making this an ideal place to stay during the Ludlow Festival in June and July, or the Ludlow Food Festival in September.
They also have a function room, so can provide the ideal venue for your event. With a built-in wooden dancefloor, this room can seat up to 70 people for a sit-down meal from The Fountain’s function menu. Alternatively, up to 150 people can be accommodated for a buffet. They can offer you a function package to cater to your needs, whatever your event might be. For larger events, such as wedding receptions, it is possible to have a marquee added to the function room. The Fountain Inn is a family-friendly pub, and, for the warmer months, it has an enclosed beer garden and play area. Open Monday to Friday serving lunch 12.00-2.00pm, and evening meals 6.30-9.00pm and open all day for food on Saturday and Sunday from 2.00-9.00pm. 53

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.
STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.
VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W
One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.
The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.
THE LIGHT
FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.
Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.
What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.
“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”
Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.
What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

Kaely Backland of Usk welcomed us into her beautiful home and told us why she chose to work with Alexander James Bifold. How did you hear about Alexander James? I wanted some beautiful bifold doors. I researched online and found the Alexander James Bifolds website. I liked the look of it. It looked very professional and gave me the confidence to give the company a call. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? They came across very professional, both on the phone and when their representative, Andrew, initially came out to talk about their products and service before and after installation. What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They installed a set of bi-folding doors with four doors which open on to the garden. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? I already had PVC bi folding doors which were a substandard product and not fit for purpose. After talking with Andrew from Alexander James, and going with his advice to choose their aluminium product, I couldn’t be happier. The doors are not only a better quality product but, aesthetically, they are more pleasing - especially since I could almost choose any colour I wanted and, finally, the big plus - they actually work! Before I hardly bothered opening the PVC doors but now I use them all the time. I was so pleased with the work from this company that I have been back to fit all new windows throughout the property as well!

You know that feeling? You notice your sleeves are just a little too short, and your cartoon rabbit socks are clearly on show below your trouser legs? It’s probably a sign you’ve outgrown your current outfit. A sign that it’s time to change.
LEWIS BALLARD
At Lewis Ballard Accountants these signs were clear to see. We kept growing. Yet we were still determined to give the exceptional customer service we’re so proud of. It was a challenge not to spread ourselves too thin.
Under Lewis Ballard, Harris and Co are evolving, ditching paper in favour of, not only the digital practices of modern accountancy, but the cloud accounting and forecasting skills of the future. We’ve shown them Xero and 4sight and it’s love at first sight.
We needed a change and when we had an opportunity we grabbed it with both hands! Fortunately, they grabbed back.
Harris and Co are bringing so much to the table. A small team of 7 with the combined experience of over a hundred years, they have a lot to show us.
Lewis Ballard and Harris and Co Consulting have come together to build a brilliant business, bringing years of experience and youthful digital expertise together. Giving clients a new level of business support and tax advice to really drive their businesses forward.
“We’re long established locally and nationally.”
“We all see this as a great move for everyone at Lewis Ballard, Harris and Co and both sets of clients.” explains Neil Ballard MD. “We’re long established locally and nationally, as innovative and proactive accountants, with a young, dynamic team. By bringing the more mature Harris and Co team on board we are 62
creating a perfect balance between youth and experience to benefit everyone involved. We welcomed Mervyn and Kath Harris and their team to Celtic House on the 1st September 2018 and are certain everyone will soon benefit from the greater strength in depth on offer.” Tax specialist Kathryn Harris MD agrees “This move creates a sensational opportunity to provide added strength in depth to both businesses from which our current and future clients will benefit enormously.” Mervyn Harris Strategic Director adds “From the outset we have endeavoured to create a client focussed business and to ensure we’re fully up to date with technology as well as best accounting and tax practices for the benefit of all of our combined clients.
This exciting opportunity creates a 25+ strong practice providing a first-class service at exceptional value.” “The Harris and Co team will continue to work with their existing clients, who will now benefit from the digital wizardry of our amazing team. And our team and clients will benefit from the kind of guidance and expertise that only years of experience can bring. It really is a win win all round!” Jan Ballard HR Director confirms, adding with a smile “Not to dress it up too much - We saw the signs, changed the outfit and now we’re a perfect fit for all your accountancy and tax needs!”

Looking for the perfect place to celebrate Christmas? With a warm welcome, traditional festive cuisine, and a fabulous range of drinks. Then The Kings Arms ticks all the boxes.
THE K INGS A RMS
The homely atmosphere of The Kings Arms is thanks to, in part, its wonderful history and current status as a Grade II listed building. With roots dating as far back as the 16th century, the pub is the very definition of a traditional pub. The rest is thanks to new owner Angela who, with the help of sister Rachel and her good friend Linda, took over the pub in November of 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. During the festive season, The Kings are offering a traditional 5 course Christmas Dinner for just £17.99. Served Monday to Friday lunchtime & evenings from November 30th til December 22nd Pre-Book ONLY by popping in or calling Ang 07487 279596.
Wednesday pensioners Christmas lunch only at £7.00 during the month of December. Normal food menu on Saturday & Sunday throughout December. In the meantime if you are in the mood for some traditional favourites then make sure to visit between 12pm and 2pm Monday to Saturday where a full menu of pub classics is available with OAP meals from as little as £5 on Wednesdays - or arrive between 12pm and 3pm on Sundays to take part in their fantastic Sunday roast. For the rest of the week The Kings Arms offers a range of drinks for every taste and preference; including Stowford press, Stella Artois, Butty Bachs, Tetleys, Carling, Guiness, and more. 74
