I
Love Covers My Walk
by Wanda Griffith have a framed picture in my office, given to me by a friend, that has three different shoes on it—a dressy high-heeled shoe, a fancy boot, and a walking shoe. The caption reads: “I can deal with anything if I have the right shoes.” This is one of many shoe “things”—scarves, hats, pins, blouses, dresses, umbrellas, purses, and many miniature collectible shoes—given to me since my book, Sand in My Shoes, was published years ago. However, this particular picture is meaningful—especially in times of disappointments. In his book, The Windshield Is Bigger Than the Rearview Mirror, Jeff Wickwire describes the pain of dealing with disappointment: “There are some needles only God can thread on our life tapestries.” We try so hard to figure out the whys, but each time we come up with more hurt and questions. Only when we practice forgiveness do we discover a fresh ability to focus on the future. Wickwire adds: “The scene out of the rearview mirror is replaced with an expanded view through the windshield of hope and faith.” I know it takes more than the right kind of shoes to deal with whatever life throws in our paths, but God’s decree will overshadow any disappointment, any failure, wrong decision, or misstep I might take. I’m confident that with God’s Word (and maybe some comfortable shoes), I can deal with anything because when God’s Spirit covers my feet, love covers my walk! Gò0dNews on Money Matters
I
Reconsidering Risk by Andrew Lee
n my last column, I mentioned how excessive financial risk-taking can lead (and has led) to financial disasters for many foolish and speculative investors. In short, taking on too much risk by trying to be greedy and “hit a home run” with our personal investments can often lead to deep financial losses. But this month I’d like to take a moment to explore the other side of risk— namely, the risk of doing nothing by trying to be too conservative and safe with our personal investing. The old cliché for risk-free investing used to be hiding one’s money in one’s mattress or burying it in mason jars or coffee cans in the backyard. Surely there’s no risk at all by doing this, right? After all, the money is there, literally, no matter what the stock market or the housing market might be doing. My money is safe and sound and within an arm’s reach, this thinking goes. What could be safer? However, as many people are now aware, the very real risk of inflation rears its ugly head in this scenario, and the $1,000 hidden in the mattress or in the mason jar is worth only $500 (or less) when it is pulled out a few decades later. The buying power of that $1,000 has dwindled significantly, so there was, in fact, a great risk involved in this supposedly airtight and safe savings strategy. With today’s interest rates on CD’s (certificates of deposit at a bank) and bank savings accounts at historic lows, even keeping our money in a bank account these days is little better than putting it in a mattress or mason jar in terms of earning interest. For instance, $1,000 in a savings account paying a typical rate today of .20 percent would earn a whopping $2 in interest per year.
10 // July 2015
(Of course, your money in the bank would be insured by the FDIC, and I highly recommend a bank account over a mason jar in the backyard). So what are the alternatives for investors who don’t want to take on too much risk? The question, as illustrated above, is paradoxical. In other words, it’s very risky to try to avoid any risk, due to inflation stealing away the buying power of our money over time. What about bonds, which many people believe are the next safest investments after bank certificate of deposits and savings accounts? A bond, for those who don’t know, is simply an I.O.U. Someone lends money to a company or government, and that company or government agency gives that investor a bond (piece of paper) agreeing to pay back the money to the investor, with interest, over a certain period of time. But again, with interest rates at historic lows, there’s nowhere for interest rates to go at this point except up. And when that happens, the price of many bonds that are being sold today are going to plunge in value because most investors will want to buy newer bonds that pay higher interest rates. In other words, if you try to sell your bonds, you could actually lose money on the investment in this scenario. So, what to do? As many financial advisors are recommending today, most investors—even those who are retired— should be at least partly invested in the stock market in order to beat inflation and preserve the buying power of their money over the years. It turns out that trying to avoid all risk might just be the riskiest decision of all.

hat is respect? It is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by the person’s abilities, qualities, or achievements. What is disrespect? It is disregard, contempt, insolence, flippancy, impudence, discourtesy, or insulting behavior. Which word would you use to describe how you treat your husband? Ephessians 5:33 says, “So again I say each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband” My goal is to treat my husband like royalty, the VIP of my life. Therefore, I match my tone of voice and demeanor when I speak to him so I can treat him with the same respect I would treat a very important client or highly respected person in society. Example: If an angry customer came to you with his problem, would you raise your voice and call him names, or keep your cool and try to resolve the issue in a civilized manner? Do the same with your husband! If I need something from him, I ask him as a favor. I don’t give him orders. I don’t make demands. This has to do with expectations (which is a whole other issue). Do you expect your husband to take the trash out, or is it a favor? If you want him to clean out the car, do you ask him to do it as a favor, or do you bark at him? I don’t give him unsolicited advice. If I feel the urge to coach him in any area, I do it as carefully as I would do it with my supervisor. Example: If you and your boss are riding in

the car and he starts to speed, would you tell him to slow down? If you did dare to say something, would you say it once or many times? If there are two ways to get to the same place and your husband takes the longer route, can you keep quiet? It is more important to keep the peace than for him to go the “right way” aka your way. Choose your battles. We spend a couple of hours a day just enjoying our relationship without bringing up our responsibilities. Example: Before there were bills and rent/mortgage and in-laws and kids, there was just us and our love. Shouldn’t our relationship consist of more than responsibilities? Talk about your hobbies, hopes, dreams, desires, feelings, movies, the news—anything but the mundane routine calendar, bills, and family. We schedule weekly business meetings to talk about responsibilities like finances, parenthood, calendar, and so forth. We conduct ourselves with professionalism and respect. Example: If speaking with each other in a calm tone seems impossible at first, conduct your “business meeting” in a public place like Panera or Starbucks so that your attitudes and tone of voice are in check. If treating your husband with respect does not come natural to you, perhaps it would help you to treat him as you would a customer, client, manager, or person in line at the store. When it comes to respect, it sounds strange, but treat each other as strangers.

tart’em young! The majority of us start life with a clean slate. We come into this world as a blank tablet with unlimited potential, and from day one, we are led down a path by our parents or guardians. Some paths lead to success and others lead to a dead end, but in the beginning, our paths are chosen for us. Parenthood is one of the greatest privileges that can be bestowed on a person. It is a God-given position of absolute power/control over another person’s life, the power to start them down the path of your choice. This power, like all power, comes with a huge amount of responsibility. You are responsible for the provision of all basic needs, such as food, water, and shelter. As a Christian parent, you are also responsible for creating an environment that will lead them to Christ and provide them with the tools and discipline to be a warrior for Christ. One such tool is a body that will carry them through whatever life can throw at them. The wellness of your child in the early stages of life starts at the kitchen table. Feeding that child a healthy diet is a great way to help him or her grow and develop into a strong and smart young man or woman. The Center on Hunger states that inadequate nutrition is associated with increased educational failure. Making the general populace aware of the connection between learning and health would

produce higher performance on standardized testing, improve school attendance, and according to their research, reduce the number of students in the special education program. My mother (a teacher for the last twenty- plus years) pointed me to The Appleton Project, one example of this information being put to the test. The Appleton school district put a five-year plan into effect that they thought might turn this out-of-control school around, and it did just that! The plan was to replace all the junk food in the vending machines with healthy choices and do a complete makeover on the cafeteria food. They pumped nothing but healthy food into those kids for five years, and according to Dr. Thomas Scullen, the Appleton Area School District Superintendent, the results were unreal. He stated, “Grades are up, truancy is no longer a problem, arguments are rare, and the teachers can spend their time teaching for a change.” There is a lot to raising up a child in the right way, and every day is a battle. There is always hope when we keep Christ first in our lives and remind our kids to do the same. Part of the challenge comes in that those little eyes are ever watchful, and they will do as you do—not as you say—most of the time. Personally, I have three boys of my own who are fourteen, five, and four years old, so I know the joys and pains of parenthood. I have found that eating healthy every day becomes easy for them over time, and if you live an active, healthy lifestyle in front of them, they will want to do the same. Play with your kids until everyone is pouring sweat every day. Pack them full of the Word of God and good, clean food, and they will thank you for it when the time comes to let them pick their own path. Live well, friends.

To Stay or Not to Stay…That Is the Question
by Karen Brummer

f you’re a full-fledged senior citizen, does the idea of moving to a senior living community pique your interest or make you fold your arms across your chest and assume a defiant posture? Let’s compare the two arrangements objectively and see what we find. Food is a top priority for most of us, but how much do seniors who live alone cook for themselves? In most cases, the answer is very little, if at all. As a result of poor nutrition, weight loss and a decline in health frequently occur. In most senior living communities, three hot meals are prepared and ready to enjoy! No fuss/no muss. Residents merely sit down at the table and order what they want, including dessert. Then they get up and walk away from the dirty dishes. A dream come true! By their senior years, most people require at least one prescription medication per day, with many people taking multiple medications. How meticulous are seniors at managing those medications? When living alone, that is a top concern. Far too often we meet people who have serious medical conditions which have been worsened by inconsistent medication doses. Frequently, people living alone forget to take medications, or sometimes forget it has been taken and an additional dose is consumed. Either scenario is dangerous. In a senior living community such as The Terrace at Mountain Creek, a nurse delivers the correct dose at the correct time. Residents don’t have to be concerned with trying to remember what to take when. We remember

for you! Seniors living at home alone very often suffer social isolation, which not only breeds loneliness but can affect their health negatively in a number of ways. Oftentimes, this social isolation is due in part to a lack of transportation. In a senior living environment, residents will have daily conversation at mealtimes and make new friends. Beyond that, they may be as social as they choose to be. And transportation worries are a thing of the past as most communities include transportation to medical appointments, shopping, and social events in the monthly rent. No more being trapped at home! Living in one’s home can be exhausting to maintain as well. Lawns require mowing, houses need painting, appliances malfunction, and house cleaning never goes away . . . that is unless you live in a senior community! Here, the lawns are manicured without you lifting a finger. If the air conditioner breaks, the most you do is pick up your phone. And with weekly housekeeping and linen service are included in the rent, Cinderella is set free! The benefits of senior living communities are innumerable but safety and security are at the top of the list. If you’ve been considering the idea of checking it out, do it today! The only thing to lose is a lot of burdens, but you have so much to regain: friends, improved health, peace of mind, and time to relax. Come visit us and see for yourself!
Karen Brummer is the community relations liaison at The Terrace at Mountain Creek, where she can show her passion for seniors. She not only educates the public on the many aspects of senior living, but she also has a rich history of face-to-face contact with prospects, residents and their families. This experience, combined with her ‘real life’ role of daughter to parents in their 80s, gives her firsthand understanding of seniors and the challenges they face.
