Your Gift Counts Most of us, including our friends and family members, will ultimately face a life-limiting illness or a loss. End-of-life care is a special kind of care. Hospice of Chattanooga is there for physical, emotional and spiritual support at that most precious time. As a community-based, nonprofit hospice, we are also there for those who cannot afford hospice care, thanks to the generosity of people like you. This is why every dollar we receive from individuals, foundations, corporations, organizations, churches and special events is appreciated and valued.

Your gift, no matter how large or small, makes a difference: not only to our organization, but to the people who receive our care and support. Investing in Hospice of Chattanooga is an investment in our community and shows your support for all those who live here.

Every gift is appreciated. Please consider giving a financial or memorial gift through The Hospice of Chattanooga Foundation. Call us at 423-892-4289 or donate online at www.hospiceofchattanooga.org

The best treatment option for people in need of aortic valve replacement is open-heart surgery, but for those at high risk, opening the heart is too dangerous. Now there is hope; it’s called TAVR or transcatheter aortic valve replacement. With TAVR, a pen-hole sized incision allows a new valve to be inserted through a catheter, providing a less invasive procedure that leads to faster recovery at home. CHI Memorial is the only hospital in the region to offer TAVR. Giving high risk patients hope for a longer life.

M

ost everyone has experienced at least one incident that could be classified as a divine appointment. When I was the book editor at Pathway Press, every time I was introduced at a public gathering, I heard comments like, “Oh, this must be a divine appointment. I have written a book; could I send it to you?” Because divine appointment are never scheduled, I never knew when this might be what I called a divine interruption. For a person who scurries from point to point with a smart phone in one hand and a “to-do list” stored on an iPad, the thought of a divine interruption may be unacceptable. These individuals prefer to have their days stay on schedule with no interruptions. That way, they can stay in control with no surprises. Rather than planned events, most of the miracles of Jesus began as interruptions. Reading the Book of Mark, I am surprised by the number of times the ministry of Jesus was interrupted . . . beginning with the a leper who stopped Him on the road (1:40-45) and ending with the woman of disrepute who interrupted the feast in the home of Simon the Leper to anoint Jesus (14:1-11). No one can doubt that interruptions not only defined the ministry of Jesus; they were His ministry! The Message, a contemporary rendering of the Bible by Eugene H. Peterson, paraphrases the words of Solomon appropriately: “Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word. Put God in charge of your work, then what you’ve planned will take place” (Pro. 16:3). If you long to show God’s compassion to hurting people you meet this year, allow Him to carve out time in your life according to the possibilities He sees—not just the ones you see. Inconveniences of every description, from a toothache to a long line at the grocery counter, can represent a divine interruption. Living with this perspective will shake up your schedule and at the same time firm up your faith. Have a great and interrupted 2016! Darnell Scafe, audiologist for Southern Medical Hearing Centers, has the knowhow and ability to treat any hearing loss. Her desire was to pursue a career that involved working with people and providing a service that would change lives. “I grew up on a farm and one of our field hands was totally deaf and could not speak,” commented Scafe. “We communicated with finger spelling and writing notes. I began my career as a speech pathologist but seemed to be more interested and intrigued with the hearing aspect of communication, so I went back to school and obtained a masters degree in audiology.” After working and being on her own for four years, returning to school was a "leap of faith" for Scafe. Her greatest desire was to attend U.T. Knoxville, which was a top-rated audiology program. However, there was an obstacle. “It required out-of-state tuition, which I really couldn't afford,” stated Scafe. “After exhausting all

A Roadmap to Victory

This year be intentional about your goals and include a plan and support system for each.

M

by Delaney Walker

y unofficial motto for each new year is, “Resolutions are meant to be broken.” I say unofficial because as a rule stickler, Goody Two-Shoes, and former teacher’s pet, I tend to stay inside the line on most activities. However, with more than twenty-five years on this earth, my resolutionbreaking ways cannot be denied any longer. I, Delaney Walker, am a cotton-headed ninny muggins when it comes to following my own pledges. As long as we are being honest, I might as well tell you I believe I am in pretty good company. Our society blows the New Year’s traditions out of proportion. People treat their resolutions like they are the answers to all of life’s problems. • Self-esteem issues? Resolve to eat only vegetables and exercise two times a day at the local gym. • Lovelorn? Set up profiles on Christian Mingle, eHarmony, Tinder, Match, and a specialty-dating site for people with similar hobbies! • Spiritually corrupt? Read the entire Bible in three months by knocking out ten or more chapters every day. • Intellectually lacking? Enroll into a couple online courses you found on Groupon and read one nonfiction book every week in addition to the local, state, and national newspapers. Take notes as needed. While these are slightly extreme resolutions, I guarantee you know someone who has set similar unrealistic goals. Personally, I have made some outrageous pledges— usually around thirty minutes

20 // January 2016

before midnight. (Last year’s resolves were scrawled across the back of an Applebee’s receipt, which was later accidentally tossed out with other receipts.) There is something about the oncoming year that fills a person with a mutual sense of hope and desperation. We think the clean slate is our opportunity to leave bad habits, painful memories, and all the negativity life has thrown at us in the past. And, to an extent it is, but only when we give ourselves a fighting chance. For example, getting in shape and reading the Bible more are on my 2016 New Year’s resolutions list. Both of these goals have been reoccurring favorites on the list for the past several years, but this year I might reach them. Instead of going into the new year with only hope, desperation, and adrenaline as my sidekicks, I made a plan. I like to call this plan a “Roadmap to Victory.” (You can call it whatever you will, but know you are missing out on a great name.) I am going to be intentional about my three goals. Each of these three has an accompanying plan and support system (i.e. accountability partners, the Couch to 5K plan, or a yearlong reading schedule). My normal approach is to jump into the new year with a whole slew of good intentions without any build-up. If I wanted to run a 10K, my best option would not be to go from low daily activity to running in the race. My best plan would be to prepare my body and mind over the course of several months. This approach requires more thought on my part, but I believe it will be worth it when I’m looking back on the year next December. Gò0dNews for Parents

Maintaining Standards Consistency has power behind it regardless of tantrum, crying, or any other behavior a child might display.

I

by Mark Aitkenhead

have been told that parenting isn’t for cowards. How true! Our kids can become demanding, throwing tantrums when they don’t get their own way. As parents, we tend to throw our hands up in exasperation and give in. Many times this giving

last to finish the delicious dinner we had prepared. Eventually, we all left the table. Shaylee and I began a battle to see who would win. I sat patiently while she slowly picked at a morsel . . . refusing to eat. After an hour

Parenting can be hard with strong-willed kids. Our response as parents can have amazing benefits or a disastrous effect. Shaylee has never thrown her food away again! One of the things I have learned is that patience in maintaining standards

in perpetuates a growing problem in our culture and society. It is far easier to let it go just to keep the peace. The problem is that it teaches the child that the tantrum gets her what she wants. Not giving in at first is the most powerful tool my pastor taught me at the birth of my first child. It reminds me of a time when my beautiful daughter, Shaylee, at about four years old. We are a family of five and enjoy eating together to discuss, pray, and enjoy. Shaylee has never been a quick eater, and that night was no exception. As usual, she was

of perseverance, I told her that she would have to stay there until all her food was finished even if it took the whole night. I left the table and stomped upstairs. Silently, without her knowing, I crept back and peered down at Shaylee. I could literally see the idea come across her face. She looked around, got up from the table, and slowly walked toward the trash can. I watched her with a smile on my face. As she lifted the lid, I shouted, “Hey!” She got such a fright that her food leapt off the plate and landed right in the trash can. She looked up with tears in her eyes and said, “Look what you made me do; you made me throw my food away.” I literally screamed in laughter while she stood there crying.

is vital. It seems we say the same things over and over. Other times, an effectual event like the HEY! (in the example above) is enough to change a behavior. While we still don’t have all the answers, a major lesson we learned is that consistency in our behavior can have a far-reaching effect in raising our children. When my no is no, my kids understand that nothing is going to change my mind. They learned that my consistency has power behind it regardless of their tantrum, crying, or any other behavior they might display. They, on the other hand, have learned that the way they approach me is paramount in getting a favorable answer. Rise up parents, you’re not cowards. You are the heroes of our society who are raising the next generation of parents. Take courage and don’t fail!

The fruits and vegetables group (especially vegetables)

is the greatest topic for diet book authors to write on because it has no “avoid” lists. It only has what author and M.D. Rex Russell calls “all you can eat and more than you ever thought of eating” lists! You may find a diet book telling you to cut down on the saturated fats, or the sugar and grains, or just carbs in general, but not vegetables.

Two Types of Carbohydrates

Foods rich in carbohydrate usually come from plants.

You may have heard the saying, “carbohydrates grow in the ground and don’t move around.” Nevertheless, even most low-carbohydrate eating plans approve of a liberal use of vegetables and some fruits. Why? The reason gets to the core of what makes fruits and

are usually absorbed quicker and have more calories by weight than the same volume of food with the fiber. Since fiber contributes no caloric value and can even slow the absorption of other carbs (sugars), it can actually be subtracted from the carb grams listed on the label of any food you eat. So if you are eating a serving of broccoli, for example, with 5 grams of carbohydrate in it, since 3 of those grams are fiber, actually there are only 2 grams of useable sugar per serving of broccoli. Quite low carb!

Pump Up the Volume

Satiety expert Barbara Rolls and her colleagues at

Pennsylvania State University have discovered another key principle that argues well for more fruits and vegetables for weight loss. And that is simply this: People eat about the same amount—or weight—of food each day to feel satisfied. So what they have been able to do is drop the caloric value of a day’s worth of food by more than 400 calories without changing people’s portion sizes or sense of satiety. Simply by making sure all her subject’s meals were full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, she was able to bulk up the servings while reducing the caloric value. The bottom line is: To lose weight, the majority of carbohydrates in your diet need to come from vegetables and some fruits. By cutting down on the grain portion of your meals and increasing the vegetable and fruit portion, you can keep your plate full and your nutrition high while significantly dropping pounds! “Filling up but not filling out!”

A Mighty Warrior

Training your mind and body to follow God’s commands will result in a victorious end, overcoming the obstacles that used to defeat you. by David Thompson

H

ave you ever been amazed at the resiliency of certain movie heroes? For some reason it seems that there are stars on the big screen that cannot die. Take Jason Bourne, for example. The most indestructible of investigators, the most amazing of agents, nobody can take down J.B. Here’s another one: Aragorn from “The Lord of the Rings.” The man falls off a cliff, fights a couple thousand orcs, stares down the king of the dead, and even attacks a group of ringwraiths, but you know who’s alive at the end of the movie? Hint: it’s not the orcs or the ringwraiths. No matter what happens during the movie, you know these guys are coming out on top in the end. Of course, in real life with the modern dangers of nukes, WMDs, and bad traffic, epic warriors aren’t as highly touted as the movie theater might claim, but they do give you a big advantage whenever you happen to have the smaller army. To understand this, just look at the Bible. In 2 Samuel 23 one of David’s mighty men, Jashobeam, took out 300 enemies with nothing but a spear (like a boss). And then there was Eleazar, son of Dodo. He struck down Philistines until his hand was so tired it stuck to his sword. First Chronicles 12 talks about some men that joined David’s army: “These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred, and the greatest for a thousand” (NIV). If you want hardcore; that’s hardcore!

26 // January 2016

So the super soldiers that wade through enemies like a toddler through a backyard puddle aren’t figments of a writer’s imagination. They really did exist, and they were just as deadly as anything a director today could think up. But here’s the question: How do these stories apply to you and me? Well, there is a battle going on. It is an invisible battle— one of principalities and not of flesh and blood, but the combatants and victims of the battle are very real. The Bible says that Satan, our enemy, is “like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (NKJV). Satan, like a lion, enjoys preying on the young and the weak. In other words, the Hobbits. You know who Satan doesn’t want to tangle with? Katniss Everdeen, Gandalf, Yoda—mighty warriors who don’t go down without a fight. How does one become a mighty warrior? It involves lots and lots of training. The same principle applies in your spiritual life. Train your mind and body to follow your commands and not the commands (or temptations) of the Enemy. Get to know your weapon—the Bible. Learn to hear and obey your commander—God. With time and effort, you’ll be living victoriously and easily overcoming the obstacles that used to defeat you. Now this doesn’t mean that you will never sin or that your life will be super easy. But God saves his strongest warriors for the toughest battles. Isn’t His love worth even the worst trial or persecution? Get ready for battle. Start sharpening your sword.

Next month we will be the third and final part of our study on love. We will talk about marital love and what God’s Word has to say about this type of love. Until then may God continue to open our understanding as we study His Word together.

A Challenge for the New Year!

The steps of the godly are directed by the Lord. He delights in every detail of their lives. —Psalm 37:23 (NLT)

by Shibu Joseph

f you blinked, you may have missed 2015. It was a year full of stuff—good, bad, and ugly— with failures, victories, births, and deaths. What do we do with all of it? Its all blurry to me now, but most often I have the hardest time letting go of the failures. How

them, or worse, characterize ourselves because of them. It’s a new year and with it, I’m giving you a call to action. Go ahead and think about that time you______________ or didn’t _______________. Did the consequences hurt? Did it cost you

will not be the same when you do. In fact, all through His word, God is telling you and me to: “Forget about what’s happened! Don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. He’s about to do something brand new. It’s bursting out!" (Isaiah 43:18-19a MSG).

about you? It’s easy recalling and rejoicing in the victories and successes. Reminiscing and memorializing with our loved ones makes the good memories last a lifetime. They’re encouraging and uplifting. We always want more of those. But life is full of twists, which are usually caused by our poor choices. It’s difficult to truly let go of the trials, troubles, and failures . . . isn’t it? God doesn’t want us to forget our past because it helps reinforce the lessons and groundwork for growth. Yet, I don’t believe He wants us to dwell on them, idolize

something? Did you learn a lesson? Now, regardless of what you filled in, if you’re reading this, I hope and pray you’re still alive and kicking. So here’s my challenge. It’s not easy, so don’t feel bad if you have to repeat this step a few times like I’ve had to do. But being mindful, go ahead, take off that yoke that’s choking you and lay that heavy burden down at the foot of the cross where grace and suffering meet. Jesus is reaching out to you with a much easier yoke for your shoulders with a lighter burden to carry. Do you trust Him? Make the trade. I promise you, life

Remember that the adversity you may have faced in 2015 isn’t the end-all, be-all in your circumstances. Instead, see it as a slight detour. God still orders your steps and a better outcome is around the corner. Instead of living in the past, find a new laser-guided focus on learning, loving, growing, and serving. Truly believe in the purpose of your very existence and the Creator who has called you to something great. In doing so, you’ll start expecting good things to come out of every challenging experience. Be at peace; God’s got this!
