uly is a month of celebrations. Many of the articles this month deal with the writer struggling to find a God-given calling, God spoke to me through his Word: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” Colossians 23:3 (NIV). “Whatever you do . . .” includes everything from homemaking to teaching, to keeping books, to writing. To confirm my calling, God spoke through a friend who phoned me late one evening and said, “There’s a scripture in the Old Testament I believe the Lord wants me to
share with you.” As I was turning in my Bible to Jeremiah, I thought, Jeremiah was the weeping prophet who spoke words of doom and gloom to God’s people. I don’t need that. What I need is hope! And the message I received was certainly one of hope: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (29:11 NIV). To accept your work as a calling is to receive a sense of purpose that brings a new passion not known before. It’s still work, but work that is more fulfilling and meaningful. Four characteristics usually accompany a divine calling. 1. A calling is distinctive—unique to each individual. So don’t wait for the blinding light to bring you to your knees. God speaks to us in different manners, but most often He speaks through His Word. 2. A calling may be difficult to fulfill. It’s frustrating if you’re work is not in your calling. We want to change, but sometimes this means leaving your “comfort zone” and moving into new territory. It’s risky. 3. A calling disturbs the devil. There is great joy in working in your calling, but there is also great grief. Satan will hinder in every way possible, sometimes using good people to confuse and complicate. This is when most people abandon their calling, assuming that it wasn’t really God who called them. 4. A calling develops into great joy! A true calling reveals its presence with enjoyment and a renewed energy—a passion that comes with doing what God called us to be. The familiar story of two brick layers points out the difference in a job and a calling. The first brick layer was asked, “What are you doing?” “I’m laying bricks,” he replied with a cynical attitude that said, “Can’t you see what I’m doing?” When the second brick layer was asked what he was doing, he replied, “I’m building a cathedral.” That’s a calling! What are you doing—just laying bricks, or building a cathedral? Disclaimer All of the content in the GoodNews Christian Magazine is for general information and/or use. Furthermore, outdoor activities can be limited to mornings and afternoons when the sun isn’t out in full force. He also says knowing the aforementioned signs and symptoms is critical. “The best way to prevent heat-related illness is to know when to stop,” said Dansby. “Often people start to feel mild symptoms but think they can just ‘push through’ the pain. It’s important for people to listen to their bodies and always pay attention to those around them, especially coaches, athletic trainers, and others who lead group activities.” To learn more about heat-related illness, visit http://www.cdc.gov/ extremeheat.

When Storms Hit Your Marriage No matter how great your marriage is, storms will always come. It might be the loss of job, the loss of a child, health issues, car troubles, or having to take care of a sick parent. If you want your marriage to survive those storms, you must have God and His Word as the foundation for your marriage.
O
by Rachel Smith
ver the past few months, my husband and I have faced many of life’s storms. Back in October we started having car troubles; then my husband lost his job, and on top of all of that, he got injured playing basketball. You’ve probably heard the saying, “When it rains it pours,” well that’s definitely what we felt was happening to us. It seemed as though we couldn’t catch a break and we kept getting more bad news week after week. Eventually, frustrations started building up, and we began to take things out on each other. One day while riding in the car together, my husband and I had a deep conversation about what we felt was really happening. We believe that the Enemy was trying to use our circumstances to turn us against one another and affect our marriage. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (see Eph. 6:12). All the problems we were facing were out of our control, but we were allowing them to steal our joy and put a wedge between us. That day in the car we pointed out the Enemy’s schemes and decided that we were not going to fall for them. We prayed together and asked God to help us have hearts of thankfulness despite all the trials. We both agreed that we would have to rely on God and each other to get through what we were experiencing.

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it” (Matt 7:24-27 ESVUK). Do you want to have a marriage that’s built upon the Rock (God), or one that’s built on sand (the world)? Only a couple that puts God at the center of their marriage and who live according to biblical principles will stand the storms. I’m so thankful that my husband and I have a strong foundation and that we know where to turn when we’re faced with various trials. I believe that no matter what comes our way, our marriage will never be destroyed because God is our rock, our fortress, and our strong tower. The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him (Nahum 1:7 ESVUK). Rachel Smith is a blogger, speaker, and mentor. She teaches a couple's class at her church Cross Connection, and hosts a marriage conference annually. She is currently in seminary school to become a certified biblical marriage counselor. The best treatment option for people in need of aortic valve replacement is open-heart surgery, but for those at high risk, opening the heart is too dangerous. Now there is hope; it’s called TAVR or transcatheter aortic valve replacement. With TAVR, a pen-hole sized incision allows a new valve to be inserted through a catheter, providing a less invasive procedure that leads to faster recovery at home. CHI Memorial is the only hospital in the region to offer TAVR. Giving high risk patients hope for a longer life.
