Letter from the Editor

M

ark Twain said, “Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.” Don’t we wish writing was that easy? It is not; writing is hard work! While serving as book editor for a publishing house for many years, I learned a lot about writing by editing other writers’ articles and books. Often, beginning writers think: If I come up with a great idea, it can carry me. This is not the case because even the noblest of ideas and the most absorbing of themes can be twisted out of shape in the hands of a careless writer. First of all, I discovered that good writing is mostly rewriting. Hemingway claimed to have rewritten the final chapter of A Farewell to Arms 39 times. There is nothing praiseworthy in rewriting; it is simply a fact of life for people who care about getting things right. It’s difficult, but if you want to write, you must rewrite. Editing yourself is the most difficult because most writers are easily seduced by their own prose. The editorial act must therefore be a deliberate infliction of pain. I probably wouldn’t express the self-editing processing this way, but you must delete all the words that add nothing to the story. I call this “cutting out the clutter.” I first learned to do this

when I was commissioned to write an article and was given a maximum word count. I learned that too many descriptions and words that deviate from the story clutter up the writing. Through the years, I developed a set of editing tools to use for improving my own writing and the essays of my students enrolled in College Writing. When I worked as book editor, one of the dreaded tasks on my job description was to write rejection letters. My boss referred to these as “ugly-baby” letters. No mother believes her baby is ugly, and most writers think their writing is beautiful. Understanding this, I tried to be as affirming as possible, while pointing out why the writing did not fit our purpose or that the author must rewrite large portions of the submission. When self-editing, I have found that the following five questions will bring my manuscript under a microscope of refinement: • Is this verb the best possible one? • Is this metaphor forced? • Have I used a mixed metaphor? • Isn’t that phrase really too threadbare to use? • Does this analogy work? When does this process end? The short answer is that the process never ends; the clock merely runs out, you turn off the computer and press it into the hands of the editor.

FEATURED COVER STORY

Jefferson Wells CPA and Tax Plus, Inc.

I

Our purpose is to educate individuals and small businesses on their best service for their financial needs. by Jefferson Wells

moved to Chattanooga in 1979 after accepting a position with Borg Textile Corporation. After a series of promotions, I eventually became their chief

financial officer and left in 1993, and Borg closed in 1995. Initially I planned to accept a similar position in North Carolina in the textile industry, but the long-term prospects for the industry and the family hardships of moving caused the epiphany. For years I had considered opening my own practice but now it was time. When first out of college I worked for a CPA firm and traveled across the country preparing location audits of client businesses. The travel schedule was horrific and I believed at the time that I would never work in public accounting again. But with my own office in a town I really liked, this would be a life-changer. It has been that.

22 // September 2017

Chief Financial Officer

At first, I did not have a single client and didn’t

know where to find one. But I met people anyway I could, and the clients signed up. Because of my years of corporate financial management, I initially believed small businesses would be operated the same way. That assumption was just flat wrong. I found most small business people had no real ability to understand or manage the finances of their company. If they would let us do for them what we do best, then the business owner would have more time to devote towards making a success of their business. That realization also meant I would have an entirely different service level to the business owner that other public accounting firms have customarily have not had. We would act as their chief

state income tax returns, business taxes, quarterly reports and all of the other tax returns they never knew they would have to do. Taxes seem to be a labyrinth of confusing and complex uncertainty to clients. We explain what these items are and when they are due and that allows our clients to sleep at night. We also help our clients plan for their future. In 1996 in addition to the CPA licensing that I hold, I became insurance licensed in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama as well as securities licensed. We try to help clients find a way to make their small business fund a retirement plan for them; in other words, pay themselves as well as any employees. By doing so, business owners and individuals can use IRA’s or SEP plans that not only provide them a retirement benefit but also reduce their current income taxes as well. We can also help them

long-term care? Well, what about retirement? When can I retire and how do I make sure I have enough money to do the many things that I wish to do once I retire? How much income will I need and how do I make sure I don’t run out of money? All of these questions are addressed in PLANNING. Life is uncertain, but your retirement doesn’t have to be just as uncertain. We help people with all of these questions. We help small businesses with the best service that they ever had for all of their financial needs. Once the business is over and retirement begins, we educate individuals on the best choices from their retirement options. We strive to make our clients feel as if they are part of an extended family. That’s the final part of what makes us very different−and better for them and for us.

Advice for the Teenage Years by Wendy Pierce

A

s teenagers, you do not always think about how what you do today will impact your future. Your teenage years are some of the most emotional, exciting, and life transforming years you will experience. Here is some advice that will help you in your teenage years and for years to come. 1. First of all, one of the greatest things you can do is to respect those in authority over you. The teenage years can be emotional and you feel like your parents or no one understands you. Believe me-they do. Everyone has been a teenager at one time so we all know difficult and exciting those years can be. 2. There needs to be open communication with your parents. Discuss issues, problems, or questions you may have during this time with your parents. It is important for you to be open with your parents about situations you are afraid to discuss. 3. Choose your friends wisely. The people you hang around determines the decisions you make, the things you choose to participate in, and the kind of future you will have.

26 // September 2017

Surround yourself with Godly friends who will encourage you, those who believe in the same values you do, and those who are of good moral character. Too many good individuals have gone down the wrong path by making bad choices because they made friends with individuals who were not living a Christian lifestyle. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 4. Keep your mind and your heart pure. Many times we are so excited about the latest movie, TV series, or music and we do not really realize what we are watching or listening to. We see or hear things we do not really need to. These things are replayed in our minds and the images replay in our minds like a movie unless God removes them. Sometimes we forget things we see or hear but most of the time we remember them. What we see with our eyes and hear with our ears are all taken into our mind, spirit, and body. Our bodies are the temple of God. In 1 Corinthians 3:16 the Bible says, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” NIV. What you do in your teenage years will impact you for the rest of your life. Live a holy life. Spend time with God by reading your Bible and praying every day. This will enable you to live a life with no regrets. There were people who may not have been a bad influence on me in morals things but they were negative and held me back from my destiny with their negative attitudes.

Wendy Pierce is a native of Chattanooga. She graduated from Covenant College with a Bachelor of Science degree in organizational management and from Lee University with a MBA. Currently she is a graduate teaching assistant studying Economics.

Planning a Family Mission Trip Going on a domestic or international mission trip will help you experience God working in a different context to strengthen your relationship as a family.

T

by Danny Hesterly

his past summer, I had an amazing opportunity to lead a mission trip to Gonaives, Haiti. The team consisted of middle and high school students and adult leaders from City Church Chattanooga. This was my second mission trip to Haiti, and it was as amazing as my first trip. With most things, the more you do it, the more confident you become and the better you understand how things operate. So halfway through this past trip to Haiti, I was up on the rooftop thinking and praying and had this crazy thought . . . Maybe I should bring my wife and two kiddos with me next year? I began to think what would be the benefits of doing this mission trip as a family? After about ten minutes, I came to the conclusion that families should at least go on one domestic or international mission trip to experience God working in a different context than you’re used to seeing, while strengthening your relationship as a family. Here are some quick tips to planning a family mission trip. • Partner with a local church or trusted mission organization. • Do your research. Mission trips are supposed to stretch your comforts, but you don’t want your family to be miserable the entire time. • Save for the trip. Do your part. Because you’ll be sending your family on this trip, don’t be dependent on others to pay for it all. If you raise all your support, then the money you’ve saved can be used to help other teammates financially or meet a specific need you’ll come across while on the trip. • If you’re going to a country that speaks another language, take time to learn key words and phrases. Practice them with each other and around the house. • In months leading to the trip, have your family serve in a local outreach ministry. Get used to

30 // September 2017

serving together and recognize the strengths and weaknesses you all show. • In weeks leading to the trip, begin to share expectations of what each person thinks is going to happen. It’s okay to feel nervous or be concerned about going. Take these moments to pause, pray, and ask God to give you faith to believe and the courage to go. • Don’t over pack. Take the necessities and be sure your child brings a “comfort toy.” This will help him or her adjust to being in a different place by having something familiar. • Bring a few snacks for your children. • When in a different country, allow time for your family to adjust to the new environment. Embrace the culture shock. It’s normal. • Don’t over plan. Make time to just enjoy being together. • When in a different country, begin each day with a devotional to center your family on why they are there. At the end of the day, come back together for a time to share highlights, challenges and/or something they discovered about themselves. The main purposes for your family to go on a mission trip together is to draw closer to God and each other. Often, a change of pace and scenery can help a person no matter the age to gain a new perspective. Begin praying and asking God where He wants your family to go next summer; then get ready for a God-size adventure.

Danny Hesterly is the family ministries pastor at City Church Chattanooga. He’s been married to his lovely bride, Erin for 13 years and has two wonderful kiddos, Micah-8 and Ava-6.

Exercise increases your heart rate, which in turn pumps more oxygen throughout your body, including your brain. That extra oxygen is necessary for your body’s cells to function properly and optimally. Your brain cells also will get in on the benefits from that extra oxygen.

Gò0dNews for Everyone Age Is Just a Number

Many believe this generation of children is best equipped to make that difference everyone is seeking because they are growing up in this world today. Just because you are young doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

O

by Jacob Chapman

ne thing that many people find so interesting is how fast our generation is changing. Piece by piece and day by day, our world changes in some shape or form. In some things, the world is changing for the better. In others, the world is heading in the wrong direction. One group of people that seem to understand how the world changes the most would be the next generation because this next generation is also changing as the world changes. The next generation also has a choice to choose who they want to become. They can let the good things the world is doing shape them into becoming a world-changer, or they can let the bad things of this world ruin their lives. It is what they choose and whom they allow to shape them in that way. Now you may be asking, “How can someone so young change the world?” Do you believe anything is possible? If you have enough faith to believe in Christianity, in a God, you do not have any physical evidence of, can you believe in something as small as making a difference at a young age? For example: How about seventeen-year-old Peter Larson who for twelve years has spent nights from November 12 and December 31 sleeping in a cardboard box hoping to raise money and awareness for homeless men and women in Plymouth, Minnesota. So far, Minnesota has raised $400,000 toward Peter’s cause and can ensure fifty families that can now be housed for an entire year. Peter has inspired new and similar ideas that tie into the things he has presented to us.

36 // September 2017

The point presented here is you are never too young to make a difference! Just because someone tells you its impossible doesn’t mean anything. Anything is possible. Psalms 127:3-5 says, “Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift? The fruit of the womb his generous legacy? Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth. Oh, how blessed are you parents with your quivers full of children! Your enemies don’t stand a chance against you; you’ll sweep them right off your doorstep” (MSG). These verses are talking about how cherished children are. Children are God’s gift to this world. Many people will tell children they’re too young. That is almost the same as saying children have no purpose. Children have the same purpose adults do−to make a difference in the world for the kingdom of God. Some even feel they have a greater chance of achieving that goal because they are so in tune with the way our world works today. Children have such a good understanding of how our world works that they might be able to get closer to the people around them and lead them in the right direction. They may even find ways to raise awareness, or raise money for needs they see and make it interesting in a way that others around their age might look at it and want to do something similar. This generation understands how the world is moving and how to raise awareness and make change the best way. In order to make a difference in the world today, you have to understand how the world works.

Free radicals attack and destroy additional collagen support structures, and without that support, skin sags and forms wrinkles. Many creams claim to increase the collagen content of our skin. One problem is the penetration of the outer skin. Our skin is the barrier between us and the environment, which makes us water tight, limiting waterbased liquids from entering or exiting the body. So how do creams ‘penetrate’ the skin? Water-based moisturizers do just that; they
