T
he month of June is filled with lifelong promises, hopes, and dreams! In the ’70s there was a trendy statement plastered on bumper stickers and lapel pins: “Try Jesus.” Even though the intention was good, the phrase sounded too commercial and noncommittal. I admit that there are biblical grounds for this statement in Psalm 34 where David says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.” This could be interpreted as saying “try God . . . see that He is trustworthy.” But the trust David speaks about in Psalm 37 is not a “try-me-in-hard-times trust.” It is the kind of trust that has commitment woven into every fiber—like the yarn in a hand-knitted sweater. I have found that this kind of trust comes when we commit the full weight of our future—our very lives—into His hands. One day a friend and I happened to meet my husband, Bob, in his Jeep, on our way to lunch. We waved and continued our conversation. Then my friend said, “Wonder where he was going?” “I don’t know,” I said. “Probably to the auto parts store down the street.” “It doesn’t worry you that you don’t know?” she asked. “No! Why should it? I trust him.” In his Gospel, John describes a time in the ministry of Jesus when many walked away from Him . . . and a few vowed to stay with Him no matter what. “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’ But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. And we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God’” (John 6:66-69, NKJV). With all his faults and failures, Peter passed the course in trust. He never questioned the Lord’s command. He didn’t have “Plan B.” When Jesus came walking on the water, Peter said, “Lord, if it’s you . . . tell me to come to you on the water” (Matt. 14:28, NIV) and he stepped out of the boat! That’s trust. When you really trust, you hold on to God’s promises as though your life depends on them. And it does.

Persecution Proceeds Promotion God is telling you not to give up in the middle of your trial. He will turn what Satan meant for evil for your good.
P
by Andrew Towe
ersecution is not fun or something we enjoy. The dictionary defines persecution as “hostility or illtreatment, persistent annoyance or harassment.” However, it is not always meant for your destruction. There are times when God allows the Enemy to bring persecution or a time of testing to push us into our destiny, and God uses it to bless us. There are many examples in the Bible of those who were faced with opposition, which brought them into a season of great blessing. What would have become of Joseph’s dream if his brothers had not sold him into slavery? What if Daniel had not faced the Lion’s den? Where would David have been without the fight against Goliath. These are just a few examples of God allowing the testing of persecution or what some would call crisis to bring forth greatness. Psalms 105:19 says, speaking of Joseph . . . “Until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him” (KJV). Whenever God deposits the seed of His Word into your life, you always go through testing. I believe that you are reading this today because God is telling you not to give up in the middle of your crisis. God is turning what Satan meant for evil for your good. In the Book of Daniel, chapter 3 tells the familiar story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were commanded by King Nebuchadnezzar to bow and worship the golden image he had set up. Whoever would not bow would be thrown into a fiery furnace.
6 // June 2017
The three Hebrew boys refused to compromise and would not bow to worship any other god. The king, full of fury, commanded for the furnace to be heated seven times hotter. He used his most mighty men to bind them up. Verse 22 says “the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men . . . ” The fire meant to kill them, but instead killed the king’s mighty men. The heated attack of the Enemy meant to destroy you is going to burn up your enemy. I declare a divine reversal in Jesus’ name! Not only were they not hurt by the flames; they didn't even smell like smoke. After they were delivered out of the fire, verse 30 says, “Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon” (KJV). They had to face fiery persecution, but afterward the very king that ordered their destruction then called for their promotion. God will cause even those who are against you to bless you. My prayer for you today is that you will stand strong in the testing season because there is coming promotion!
Andrew Towe and his wife, Brooke, together pastor Ramp Church Chattanooga. They have one daughter, Giuliana, and are currently expecting a son this fall. Even as Ezekiel was carried out by the spirit to the valley of dry bones, Pastor Andrew has been called to speak the prophetic message of awakening to the Tennessee Valley, raising up an army of believers from the dry scattered bones and equipping them to advance the kingdom of God.

he heat of warm days, the crack of baseball bats, and the sweet smell of waffle cones all point to one thing−summer! My 10 weeks! As a kid, that felt like a lifetime of unending fun and relaxation. No more tests. No more homework. No more late-night projects. One summer, while I was daydreaming about riding bikes with my friends and afternoon movies, God had different plans. God asked me to use my 10 for something much bigger than what I had imagined. He wanted me to tell other kids about Jesus. Me, God?! I really think You’ve got the wrong person, I thought to myself. I surrendered my life to Jesus a few years before, but I was just a kid. I’m still learning, I thought to myself. I can’t drive. I don’t have any money. I

by Kayla Stevens am way too young for God to use me right now. I need to grow up a bit. God can use me when I am older. Nope! God had exactly the right person. He knew how old I was and that I couldn’t drive yet. He knew I was scared to talk about Jesus with my friends and that I really wanted Him to use someone else, but He had different plans, better plans. God taught me that summer that I didn’t have a junior-sized Holy Spirit living inside of me. I had the real thing, and all of it! God could use me. More than that, He wanted to use me. I prayed for God to show me what to do. I talked to my parents and friends, and I said yes to God. I got a few of my friends together, and we walked around in the
neighborhood every morning, inviting kids to our club where we talked about Jesus, played games, and ate as many popsicles as we could buy! God didn’t want me to be older. He didn’t want my money. He didn’t even want me to drive. He just wanted me to say yes and to believe He could use me in a much bigger plan. How does God want you to use your 10 this summer? Could you make a new friend, invite someone to church, or maybe raise money for a charity or local mission project? God wants to use you this summer to make an impact in your community for King Jesus. The same Holy Spirit that lives inside every adult Christian you know, lives inside you too. No junior sizes allowed. Pray about how God wants to use your 10 this summer. Say yes to what He asks you to do. Join Him in the greatest adventure of all and eat as many popsicles as you can along the way!

Bridge Financial Planning
Bridge Financial Planning provides fee-only financial planning and investments for today’s professionals—as a fiduciary. by Jennifer B. Harper, MBA, CFP®
Work YOUR Plan.
Financial stress is consistently near the top of surveys that ask what keeps people up at night. It’s also one of the top reasons cited for divorce. While it’s typically a taboo topic, it seems personal finance may be a topic worth paying more attention to. What do you think of when someone says, “financial planning”? Do you immediately think of a sales pitch on investments and insurance? If so, that’s a shame. Yes, it includes investments and insurance, but if you stop there, you’re leaving a lot on the table. There is so much more to consider! It should include all the following (as applicable): • Personal Financial Statements • Estate Planning • Tax Planning • Cash Flow Management • Investment Management • Retirement Planning • Insurance Planning • Education Funding • Employee Benefits Management Financial Planning should be an ongoing conversation and action plan centered on your goals and values. Consider your biggest goals and closest held values. Does your current financial plan address them? One of the biggest issues I see when teaching financial literacy to students is the idea that money is the end goal− but too often, that philosophy follows us into adulthood. Money is never really the end goal. Money is simply a tool we use and exchange for the experiences we place value on. When values and goals inform spending and investing decisions, stress is reduced and progress toward the goals

are achieved without compromising your values. Did you know there are investments focused on avoiding certain industries like gambling, adult entertainment, or alcohol/ tobacco stocks? There are also funds available that focus on investing in companies that are sustainability driven. As last month’s Money Matters article states, the first place to start is with an emergency fund. I recommend that this account be held separately from others to discourage easy access. This is the account to use when things happen that can’t be planned for−job loss, extended illness, major repair, and so forth. It’s the account that becomes the buffer between unexpected expenses and high interest rate credit cards, loans, or selling an asset at the wrong time. Beyond that, it’s a very individualized process. • Some people struggle with the decision between paying off debt and saving for retirement, or between education funding and retirement savings, or how much to contribute to a 401K. • Business owners often have lots of planning needs but may have assets tied up in the business rather than in a traditional investment account. • Others may be wondering how to share their values with the next generation and how to communicate their wishes through estate planning and beneficiary designations. They may also wonder about efficient ways to donate to their church or favorite non-profit. Everyone will bring their own questions to the process – that’s the way it should be. While there are time-tested principles that don’t change, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to planning your best financial future. Time and effort to align your plan with your vision is time well spent! Jennifer B. Harper, MBA, CFP®, Founder & Director – Bridge Financial Planning, LLC. She is also an adjunct finance instructor at UTC and the founder of the non-profit organization, Common Cents Financial Literacy, Inc.

decades of life, I have found that some of the best memories are made around the dinner table. I remember Sunday dinners at my grandparents’ house, with uncles, aunts, and cousins all gathered around a small table. Everyone is in each other’s way, but none of us would have changed a thing. Now that several of those family members have gone on, I treasure those memories. As my husband and I started a family eighteen years ago, I knew that I wanted to make those same memories. I know it is not the norm, but my busy family of four manages to make it to the dinner table together several times a week. About 6:15 every night my house begins to bulge with activity. My husband and son arrive home famished after a strenuous workout at Crossfit Anistemi; my daughter finishes off her shift at a local afterschool program, and I complete my trek from a wonderful but stressful job with an Employee Benefits firm in downtown Chattanooga. I am always looking for an easy but filling meal to get on the table quickly without ruining the boys’ workout. Now that the temperatures have begun to rise, I love recipes that do not require me to turn my oven on. My husband loves to grill, and grilled chicken has become a staple in our house. We try to think constantly of new marinades and side dishes to keep it interesting. One of our favorites is my Greek pasta salad. After eating a Greek salad at one of our favorite local restaurants, I was inspired to turn it

Chambliss Center for Children
Celebrating 145 years this year, this agency is one of the oldest Chattanooga-area nonprofit organizations with a long history of doing great work in the community. This is due in large part to President and CEO Phil Acord, who has been with the agency for more than 45 years. Chambliss Center for Children continuously propels its mission of preserving family unity and helping to prevent the dependency, neglect, abuse, and delinquency of children by responding to the community’s child care needs.

Association, from five downtown Chattanooga churches, started a clothing and food pantry for orphaned girls. In 1877, during the Yellow Fever epidemic, the need to house orphaned children became apparent, and so this group of entrepreneurial women drafted a formal charter and began what came to be known as the Vine Street Orphan’s Home. Following the Great Depression, the number of orphaned children grew dramatically again, and in 1939, they

The “orphanage” concept was all but eliminated
in the 1960s as the foster-care system came about. Due to the changing needs of the community, the Board of Directors proposed something that had never been done before−Care Around the Clock, 24-houra-day childcare. This program continues today as the agency’s Extended Childcare Program, and provides quality early childhood education to low-income, atrisk children. Most of these children, ages six weeks to
twelve years old, live in single-parent households. The agency charges on a sliding fee scale with the average fee being about $70 a week. With a ThreeStar rating, the highest awarded by the state, the program serves approximately 350 children on the main campus, and graduates nearly seventy children each year to public Kindergarten classrooms. Based on assessments, 100 percent of those children leave Chambliss Center for Children with the skills they need to be successful in school. The agency provides school-age children before and after school services and holiday care during the school year and a camp for summer when school is out. Operating twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, this program allows parents to work or attend school at any time needed in order to provide for their families.

additional children from six weeks to Kindergarten and use the same sliding fee scale. The agency also provides early childhood education and care programs for the children of teachers in eleven Hamilton County public schools. This program has helped reduce turnover rates for new teachers from 49 percent to under 10 percent in the schools where the classrooms are located.
As an extension of the main program, Chambliss
Center for Children also manages five off-site Early Childhood Education programs located throughout the Chattanooga community. Before becoming part of the agency, these entities struggled to serve their neighborhoods’ low-income, at-risk children and could not charge a large enough fee to sustain their operation. Chambliss Center worked with the Boards of Directors of these agencies and established a management agreement to operate the programs. The Center’s administrative staff do all the back-office work, and the program staff manage the day-to-day operations of these five centers. This collaboration

Gò0dNews for Parents The Power of a Kid’s Prayer over a Papa’s Selfish Preference Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. —Ephesians 3:20 NKJV
A
by Bill McGinnis
s parents, my wife and I try to help our kids see the power of God revealed through prayer. When the kids were young, we said prayers with them and tried to make a big deal of how and when God answered. At times we even wrote our family prayer requests on a large sheet of paper stuck to the refrigerator. When God answered we would write down the way He answered, we put the date He answered, and we would all celebrate and thank Him for His goodness. We want our four kids to see His power and love displayed in answered prayer. This plan to teach our kids to pray was going great when my young son decided he wanted a dog. He prayed faithfully and fervently with my wife for weeks at bedtime prayers for a dog. I, however, had just become the senior pastor of a church that had recently survived an ugly split, and with four young children, my plate was pretty full. In my selfishness, I justified not getting a dog because I didn’t have a lot more time or energy to add “pet care” to my todo list. So, thinking that I would eliminate the possibility of adding a new canine family member, I said. “The only way we are getting a dog is if God puts one in our backyard.” I felt extra assured this would not happen because the church had just built a four-foot-high chain link fence around the parsonage backyard. My son, however, was not shaken. He knew that God answers prayer, so he redoubled his prayer efforts. One morning I looked out the back door and right in the middle of the backyard, inside the fence, was a medium-sized black dog that looked like a small wolf. Of course, I did a double take and said to myself, I don’t see a dog in my backyard, thinking maybe that if I denied

seeing said dog it would disappear. So I hoped that maybe the dog would just go away. But my son looked out the door and said, “That is my dog I’ve been praying for. God sent my dog!” I reluctantly put some water out for the poor mutt that obviously had been on the streets for a while. My animal-loving wife could do nothing but laugh at God’s sense of humor and her pastor husband’s lack of faith in the power of his son’s prayer. My son instantly named the mutt “Scottie” before we actually knew the dog was a female. From then on, she was affectionately known as “Scottie, the girl dog.” But God was not through answering the prayers of that little boy and humbling his daddy. After a few weeks I asked my wife, “How much are you feeding that dog? She’s getting fat.” She said, “I’m not feeding that dog any extra.” We looked at each other and said, “She’s pregnant!” So my God, “who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think,” gave that little boy and his sisters six more mutt puppies, much to their glee. They did recognize that seven dogs were probably too many to keep for ourselves, so we all agreed to share the joy of puppies with other people. Fortunately, it was the holiday season and we were able to advertise Christmas puppies and give them all away. But my whole family knew that God answered fervent prayers of a little boy. Even now, when all my kids are grown, they call home and share their prayer requests with us believing God for answers, and we thank Him for His response. The answers aren’t always exactly what we asked, but we still recognize that God answers even if He says, “No” or “Not yet.” Bill McGinnis is the minister of education and families at Ridgedale Baptist Church. He has served churches in Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee. His wife Anita is a mom and a Christian Speaker and Teacher. He is grateful to have his 4 children at colleges in Tennessee. He enjoys teaching Bible studies, riding a bicycle, making jerky, and grilling meat.
