CREATED FOR RELATIONSHIP
A
round 1830 to 1840 the first communication across a long distance was developed. It was called the telegraph. Although it was credited to Samuel F. B. Morse, it had been worked on by many different individuals. Morse had created the first practical telegraph to be used. In 1840, Morse patented his first device and on May 24, 1844 the first telegraph was sent between Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland. It said, "What hath God wrought?" Some 30 years later Alexander Graham Bell invented the first telephone. For the first time, this would give individuals the opportunity to hear and speak to others by utilizing their very own voices. The era of communication had been taken to another level. It wouldn't be long before every home would have a telephone. From that point on society began to move quickly to other forms of communication including car phones, pagers and portable phones. With the invention of the computer came the internet, and with the internet came e-mail, giving another opportunity for quick and instant dialogue between individuals. Over time cell phones im-
By: James Sears Assoc. Pastor, Mt. Olive Ministries proved and became more readily available giving people the ability to find and talk to someone any time and any place. Now we even have internet and e-mail capability on cell phones including access to social media such as Facebook and Twitter. So what does all of that mean? It means that there is a strong desire for man to build and have relationship with others. The reason for that is simple; man was created for relationship, or communication if you will, first with God. Genesis 1:27 says "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created." We are connected to God in a very unique way. We are the only beings which He created in His own image. No other creature was created this way. This allowed man to relate to God and have relationship with Him. But God recognized the need for Adam to have relationship with others as well. In Genesis 2:18 God then says, "It is not good for man to be alone." So God created another being to share in the joys and woes of life, another person that man could relate to and share life with. But it is important for us to
understand that in order for us to have healthy relationships with other people, our relationship with God must be first in our lives. It has to become a priority. If this relationship is right, then all others will follow - our relationships with our spouses, our kids, friends, co-workers, and yes, even our relationships with our enemies. When asked what commandment was of the utmost importance Jesus replied in Mark 12:30-31, "You should love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all your soul, and with all of your mind, and with all of your strength. And the second is this, you shall love your neighbor as yourself; there is not commandment greater than these." So how does all of this relate to us. First we need to understand that we were created for fellowship with God and should make this relationship priority. Second we must realize that God created others in His image as well and that we are to love them as ourselves. And lastly, all of the inventions that have been created were made to strengthen relationships, not tear them down. Use technology to bring glory to God and to love others.

very Spring and Summer young people who desire to step-up their game join ball teams in the off season to keep improving their skills. Some do so in an attempt to better themselves for their school teams, some to stay in shape, and others simply for the love and passion of the game. Whatever their motivation, they all reap great rewards when they get involved and work hard in a team environment. Being a part of a team or group no matter what kind is very healthy for young people. The comradery and teamwork developed in a young person’s life pays off huge dividends not only immediately, but as they develop into young adulthood.

Kids learn necessary life skills like communication, dedication, determination and other quality disciplines as they band together as a group working towards shared vision and goals. A team I wish to feature in this article specifically is the Under Armor Fire. The UA Fire is a girl’s 6th grade basketball team sponsored by Under Armor, an American sports clothing and accessories company, and coached by Larry Eaton of McMinn County, Tennessee. These girls come from different geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds and play for various schools. Although they line up on opposite sides of the ball during the school season, they lay all differences aside to be united by a common goal to excel at the game they all love and work towards being the best team they can be. Last year, under coach Larry, the Under Armor Fire girl’s basketball team won the YBOA (Youth Basketball of America) state tournament and was runner up in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) state tournament. They did not enter the national tournaments. This year they are setting high goals to show the nation that a bunch of young girls from the southeast can compete on a national level. Such goals do not come without a great cost. In the midst of intense practices during the weekday evenings after a long day of school and traveling to several local tournaments on weekends, the UA Fire girls are determined to raise the finances to ensure that the opportunity is affordable for every girl and her family to make it to the national tournaments to compete with the best in the nation. One of the ways they are raising money is by hosting their own tournaments. One of the big tournaments they are hosting will be the first ever AAU sanctioned tournament to hit Cleveland, Tennessee. It will bring to town several great boy and girl ball teams ranging from 3rd to 11th grade on the weekend of March 15th-17th. To find out more information about the tournament you can call coach Larry Eaton at (423) 506-1991 or send him an email at larryeaton@emecinc.com. They would appreciate support from their own local community as they work hard as a team to reach their fund raising goals. Most of us realize the importance of teamwork. Teamwork is vital to success in all areas of life. It’s something we strive for, something we celebrate and something we all need in life. As the slogan says, “Teamwork makes the dream work”. Many young people in our communities have dreams and continued support from family and faith and community organizations help make their dreams a reality. Let us, as a community, do all we can to inspire teamwork in them and future generations.

MONEY TALK$ $
I
$By: Andrew Lee
Loaning Money to Family and Friends
n Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, a father (Polonius) tells his son (Laertes), “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.” But obviously, that’s easier said than done for many people. Imagine this scenario: you’re at work, and a co-worker asks you to lend him or her five or ten or twenty dollars for lunch. Maybe it’s just a few bucks. No big deal, right? If you have the money to lend at the time, you might agree without hesitation, especially if the requested loan is a small one. Perhaps you don’t even expect to be repaid, and in any case, you wouldn’t begrudge your co-worker or friend such an insignificant amount of money, even if he or she never paid you back. But what if this coworker or friend is notorious for always being “short” and always asking for a “loan” that is never repaid or, if it is, it’s repaid after lengthy delays and countless excuses and sad stories about life’s misfortunes. Would you be eager to lend money to this type of person? I think the answer is obvious, and we all know someone who is “this type,” whether it’s a co-worker or relative or neighbor or friend. The Bible has much to say on this subject, and some scriptures may seem a bit contradictory at first glance. For instance, we are told in Deuteronomy 23:19 that if we do lend money, we are not to charge interest on the loan. Luke 6:34 goes even further and tells us not to expect repayment when we lend—in other words, “give” to those in need if you choose to, rather than “lend” with expectation of repayment. Deuteronomy 15:8 and Matthew 5:42 make this point clear as well. Why might the Bible recommend
March 2013
that we “give” to those in need rather than make a “loan”? Think about the psychological and emotional dynamics involved in being in debt to a co-worker, family member, neighbor, or friend. Trouble often arises in such a scenario. The borrower becomes a “slave” to the lender, as Proverbs tells us, not literally but metaphorically. No matter how good the lender’s intentions are, the person who owes the money suddenly makes himself scarce, afraid that the lender will ask when repayment is to be expected. The old joke says that if you really want to get rid of someone you don’t like, just lend that person some money—you’ll never see
him again! But how true that is in real life. So that formerly healthy relationship is now marred with this financial obligation from one person to another. I’m not saying that you should never make a loan to anyone at any time. Rather I’m saying that if you do make such a loan, first, do so without charging interest and secondly, do so with the full expectation that you very well never may be repaid—and be okay with that. If someone does actually pay back the loan, feel free to accept repayment. But the Bible says to lend without expectation of repayment. The simplest solution to this entire conundrum is simply to “give” the money to those in need, as the Bible instructs, and don’t even call it a “loan” in the first place. If you don’t have the money to give, just be
honest and tell them so. What about co-signing a loan for someone who asks you? Proverbs 17:18 states, “A man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbor” (NIV). That seems pretty clear to me. Don’t do it, or be prepared for trouble. Think about it: the borrower needs a co-signer only because the bankers think this person is not likely to repay the money, whether due to poor credit rating or not enough credit history. If the bankers think this person is unlikely to repay, should you be co-signing the loan so that the bank can legally come after you if the borrower fails to pay on time? That doesn’t seem like the smartest move. I’ve never co-signed a loan for anyone, though I’ve been asked many times. On the other hand, for the sake of full disclosure, I’ll admit that I have, once upon a time, asked my own parents to co-sign a car loan when I was a teenager, and they obliged. Thankfully, I was responsible and repaid the loan in a timely manner, but there was no guarantee that would happen. Many are the horror stories about well-intentioned, kind people who agreed to co-sign a loan for a friend or family member, only to regret that decision later. My suggestion when asked to co-sign is to use that opportunity to have an open and honest discussion with the other person about finances, and try to suggest making a written budget and seeking financial counseling (such as Financial Peace University) in order to help. In the long run, that will reap greater rewards, for both of you.

Re-Communicating to Avoid Mis-Communicating By: Jason Browning Assoc. Pastor, Westmore Church of God
H
ere’s an interesting story from dailytelegraph.com Sana Klaric and Adnan met online. His screen name was Prince of Joy and she was Sweetie. He entered the online chat room from work. She worked at an Internet cafe in Bosnia. They were both married to other people, but their marriage was in trouble and they shared their concerns with their newfound, online soul mate. They eventually decided to meet up - but there was no happy ending when they realized what happened. Turns out, Sweetie was already married to Prince of Joy. Sana and Adnan were married to each other, and having an affair with each other. A few months later, they were filing for divorce - each accusing the other of being unfaithful. Sana said: “I thought I had found the love of my life. The way this Prince of Joy spoke to me, the things he wrote, the tenderness in every expression was something I had never had in my marriage. It was amazing, we seemed to be stuck in the same kind of miserable marriages - and how right that turned out to be. We arranged to meet outside a shop and both of us would be carrying a single rose so we would know the other. When I saw my husband there with the rose and it dawned on me what had happened I was shattered. I felt so betrayed. I was so angry.” Adnan said: “I was so happy to have found a woman who finally understood me. Then it turned out that I hadn’t found anyone new at all. To be honest I still find it hard to believe that the person, Sweetie, who wrote such wonderful things to me on the Internet, is actually the same woman I married and who has not said a nice word to me for years.” It’s amazing how many times what we want is right in front of us. One of the
March 2013
most common myths about marriage for young men is that everything will be perfect when they get married. In most of my encounters with young engaged couples, men want to get married because they don’t want things to change. They have found the “perfect one” in their new spouse.
But things do change, and sometimes very quickly. Things that were cute become annoying. Habits that weren’t noticed become glaring obstacles. In an environment like this it’s easy for 2 people to grow apart. But how do we stop this? How do we recognize when we enter troubled areas? How can we keep relationships solid?
Well, there’s no one ultimate solution, but here are an idea about communication that I’ve found helpful in my marriage. We must commit to re-communicate information that is vital to our relationship. Say it once, and then say it often. Notice how in the story above, the couple identified the online persona of their spouse to be so wonderful. Adnan wrote it was hard to believe the person he was married to would write such nice things. Sana commented on how understanding this new Prince of Joy was for her. One marriage myth about communication is that it need not be repeated. Some men think, “ If I told her I love her then she should remember it. I shouldn’t have to tell her over and over.” In marriage, it’s not always about communicating new information but re-communicating information in a way that builds confidence in your spouse. You telling your wife that you love her isn’t new information, but it helps reinforce for her your feelings and commitment to her. When things are going great, it’s a good time to remind your spouse why you love him or her. Tell them in a note or a card. (Remember when you were dating?) Let them know that things are great by sending a text during the day for no reason. And when things are difficult, do the same. Imagine if when you were in an argument with your spouse and you reached an impasse, you both stopped and just communicated why you love each other. What would that do in a relationship? Re-communicating information helps remind our spouse and remind us of why we are together in the first place. Tell her you love her. Again. Tell him you think he’s great. Again. It’s this type of repetition that builds confidence in our relationships and helps us assume the best from each other.

"PRESSURE TO BE A PERFECT MOTHER IN AN IMPERFECT WORLD" By:Melanie Lewis
The doorbell is chiming on the other side an unfamiliar stranger lurks...the phone is ringing... the spaghetti on the stove is bubbling over and splattering volcanic bursts of red onto the white tile kitchen floor...you have to be at a soccer game in 30 min. and your in charge of the snacks!!!! To top it all off suddenly you hear “hey mom I need 25 cupcakes for the school party tomorrow”. Sound all to familiar?....Unfortunately it is even highly possible that this is minimal compared to some of your lives. The times in which we live have become so chaotic and hectic that it’s hard to enjoy anything especially if we let them become the focus. Forget stopping to smell the roses’ we don’t even have the time to plant them!!!....This kind of stressful existence is difficult for any woman married or single. Sometimes you just want to throw in the preverbal towel. By the time bedtime routines roll around you find yourself exhausted, tired from the pressures of the day and facing the painful fact that tomorrow is a repeat. With every ounce of energy that you can muster (and it takes all of it) you manage to drag your lifeless body into bed. As you lie there body willing to give in and call it a night but the mind still racing. Contemplating the way that you snapped at Jr. because he didn’t have every piece of his uniform together before you left for the game etc ..etc..feeling guilty......Eventually you pull your fluffy covers up around you and the familiarity and comfort of your own bed reduces you to a semi-comatose state and you reluctantly give in to the night. This is state of mind I found myself
victim to as a mother years ago. The pressure to become everything for everybody and then what time and energy that was left over, if any I could utilize for myself...(insert chuckle here)... This kind of existence is exasperating for any woman even “Super Woman” would have a hard time keeping up the pace. Nowadays most families have two parents working outside the home to get ahead or just to make ends meet. With the staggering divorce statistics women are left single and some are to go it completely alone by abandonment. Feeling the burden of carrying what feels like the weight of the world on their shoulders at times. Where ever your find yourself in the two scenarios I described I’m sure that you can relate on some level. As woman for one reason or another we have bought into the lie that we have to be perfect and if we aren’t then here comes the “false guilt” rushing over us like a tidal wave. Forcefully knocking us down time and time again fed by our own insecurities and self doubt. I blame this partly on secular media which gives us unrealistic examples to live up to like that of June Cleaver. The dress wearing pearl clad mother of the 50’s with perfect hair, immaculate house, a gourmet dinner on the table every night and so on. This is unachievable especially in this day and time even for June Cleaver. We have taken ownership of something that no one wants to own!!!.....Why do we do this? Is it because we love our families and want what is best for them or feeling the pressure to measure up to what everyone else thinks that we ought to be? Or a combination of
both? What ever the reason the fact of the matter is that we must somehow figure out a way to get out of this vicious cycle and negative way of thinking. Ultimately making us a better person, wife, mother, sister, friend etc. etc...How do we do this you ask? The first bit of advice that I can give to you is “breathe just breathe” ...Sounds simple doesn’t it? Well, your right it is. Take a few minutes light some candles, turn on some soothing music, pour in some lavender bath oil and take that highly anticipated long hot soak in the tub you’ve dreamed about. Oh yes, I almost forgot lock the door!!!...(smile). No excuses, everybody has 20 minutes to spend on themselves. You’ll be amazed what this does for the mind, body, spirit and soul. I’m a personal trainer by trade and when signing a new client I hear every kind of excuse for not exercising under the sun, moon and stars. The truth is that there are 24 hrs. in a day and this means there are also 1,440 minutes in which to find 20 of them to exercise leaving your with 1,420 to do with what you please. Even the skeptics must admit this sobering reality is hard to argue with. It’s about habits, priorities and schedules. At one time I bought into to everything too “hook, line and sinker”. Until one day God took the blinders off my eyes. He showed me through scripture that we are not expected to be perfect...Wow!...this resonated with me deeply. I ask myself the question then why have I been so incredibly hard and judgmental on myself? I prayed for freedom from my imprisoned thinking and for God to renew my mind as in Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Miraculously God began to peel away at those layers of insecurities and self doubt. I found myself not worrying so much if the cupcakes were lopsided or if I purchased them pre-made from a local bakery. After all if there were imperfections then I wasn’t to blame it was the bakeries fault right? This freed my mind from worry and gave me extra quality time with my children that was lacking in our lives before. Excepting and loving myself for who God created me to be imperfect, wounded and in need of a savior full of grace and mercy. It was like that weight of the world I had been carrying around all these years was lifted off my shoulders and I was able to breathe and enjoy my life again. Just as God intended. I pray as you read and relate to my article today that you find the same freedom in your life and begin to live again with purpose, joy, love, peace and acceptance. Hmmmmm is that your bath water I hear running and soothing music in the background?....I truly hope so....Peace/Blessings....

The Victory of Easter By: Larry Cockerham Senior Pastor Living Word Church
Luke 24:1-7 New International Version (NIV)
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”
A
ll that some people know of Easter is baby chicks, Easter eggs, and the Easter bunny. Christians know that Easter is about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is about the resurrection victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over sin, death, hell and the grave. When Jesus rose up out of the tomb before daybreak that first Easter Sunday, he literally conquered and trampled the enemies of God and humanity. Easter is about victory. When Jesus rose from the dead, he conquered every power that sought to silence and destroy Him. The mighty Roman Empire thought it had him safely locked up in the tomb, but the soldiers shook with terror and fainted with fear when Jesus rose from the dead. The stone with the Roman governor’s seal was rolled away, and the world could see that Jesus had risen. The angel at the tomb proclaimed, “He is not here, He is risen. Just as He said!” Philosophers have tried to stamp out the message of the resurrection of Christ. The famous skeptic Voltaire fought the message of Jesus Christ with every argument he could muster. On his deathbed in 1778, he said, “In twenty years Christianity will be no more. My single hand shall destroy the edifice it took twelve apostles to rear.” Some years later, Voltaire’s house was used by the Geneva Bible Society to print the Word of God containing the message of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Governments down through the ages have tried to silence the influence of Jesus Christ and grind His church under their feet. In the spring of 1989, then Soviet Premier Gorbachev was in the reviewing stand, overseeing a parade of Soviet military power. Suddenly, out of the crowd a Russian Orthodox priest and a group of men and women ran up to Gorbachev’s elevated platform. The priest lifted up a cross and shouted, “Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, Jesus Christ is risen!” The parade crowd was stunned and silent for a moment, and then they thundered back, “HE IS RISEN INDEED!” Now Gorbachev is gone from power, and the statues of Lenin, the founder of the atheistic Soviet Union are in the ash heaps of history. But the church, and the Lord Jesus Christ continue to live in victory. Jesus Christ is the victor over death. At the heart of this victory is the reality that since humanity’s fall in the Garden of Eden, God’s beautiful creation has been distorted and taken captive. In the garden of
Eden, humanity struggled with temptation and lost its first battle. Through Adam and Eve’s first sin, mankind was taken prisoner to sin and death. From that moment, sin and death reigned over all mankind. We were created for fellowship and relationship with God. But when the first man and woman were tempted to disobey God, they rebelled against God and that relationship was severed. We were separated from God. The very reason for our existence was lost and ruined, but God did not abandon us. God sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, into this broken world. Jesus went behind enemy lines when He came in the flesh. He came to destroy those powers that kept us separated from God. The Bible says, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” (1 John 3:8) Jesus came to declare war on the enemy, to overcome him and to destroy him forever. Jesus resurrection is the victory God won over the power of death. Death is not just the physical cessation of respiration and metabolism. That’s only the symptom of death. Ultimately death is separation from relationship with God. God had warned Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that if they ate from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they would surely die. When Adam and Eve broke God’s command, they didn’t immediately die physically. What happen was that their relationship with God was broken. Life cannot be sustained apart from the Giver of life. Just as a branch cut off from its source must eventually wither, so we die when we are cut off from God. One man’s sin separated the entire human race from God. The complete obedience of the man Christ Jesus restored us. His sacrificial death on the cross became our bridge back to the relationship with the God we were created for. Jesus’ rising from the dead overturned and reversed the power of sin and death. Now when we receive the risen Savior, that love relationship with God is restored, and we live in the power of His resurrection victory. This is what Easter is all about. It’s not about bunnies; it’s about Jesus. It’s not about Easter eggs; it’s about the resurrection of Jesus. Through His death and resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ defeated forever all of our enemies. Through His death and resurrection He defeated sin, death, hell and the grave. Hallelujah! He is risen!

Easter Island Lessons: Why Wise Parents Rock By: Craig Thompson
E
aster Island is a remote island in the Pacific. Located almost 2200 miles to the west of Chile, it is one of the most isolated islands which is inhabited. Inhabited by very few peopled, nonetheless the island is famous worldwide for its huge-headed statues which line the coast. As a child I read about Easter Island, saw pictures of the statues and used to wonder who made them. Why were they on the coast? What did they represent? How did their builders manage to move such large carvings without heavy equipment? Children have that natural curiosity. It seems that one of the first games that children know without the benefit of being taught is the game of twenty questions -- or forty. "Why is the sky blue?" "How far is K-mart?" "Why does the sun come up in the East?" "Why does the preacher shake his head back and forth when he preaches?" "Why is that man running down the road without a shirt on?" You know the drill. Question after question after question. Truthfully, it's easy to run out of patience before we actually run out of answers. Rather than continuing to answer questions, we flash an exasperated look and say, "Stop asking so many questions!" This usually is good for about a ten minute reprieve. But Easter Island is one of those places that just naturally evokes a bit of wonder and questions -- even from adults. Sometime in the distant past, groups of laborers each worked for about a year to carve one of those statues (there are over 800 of them). Then they carted them on sleds or some other clever device all the way from the quarries to the coast. Finally, they had to erect the statues in the proper place. Why? Who would do this? What is the purpose? Don't you wish you had a chance to sit and listen to some of the stories that surround these monoliths? Rocks and stones. Men especially seem to have a fascination with rocks. What boy hasn't left his Mom a present of a pocketful of rocks to fish out before she does laundry? In Bible times, Joshua seized this natural inclination and used it to drive home some very important points. Several times in the book of Joshua beginning with the entry into the land of Canaan and during the conquest of the territory, we read of Joshua either setting up piles of stones or writing things on stones. After God parted the waters of the Jordan River and Israel crossed on dry ground, Joshua commanded the handpicked men of the twelve tribes to each carry a stone out of the midst of the Jordan while they were passing through the riverbed. When they reached
March 2013
the other side, Joshua built a pillar of the twelve stones as a memorial to the miracle God had worked in their behalf. Why did he do this? Was it for the benefit of the people who had walked through the Jordan? No. They didn't need a photograph or a video of something they had personally experienced. Listen to what Joshua said: "In the future, when your children ask you, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them that Israel crossed over on dry ground‌ God did this so that all the Earth would know that He is powerful and that we might fear Him always." Hmm. An inexplicable pile of rocks. Questions from the mouth of a child. A good story to listen to. It sounds like the recipe for something memorable. What about you? What is your Easter Island statue? Your pile of twelve stones? Your large boulder under a tree (Joshua 24:26-27)? A wise parent knows that children WILL ask questions. A wise parent will erect some monuments, some memorials, some visible memories of the work of God in order to provide a focal point for his child's natural curiosity. And a wise parent will make time to say, "I'm glad you asked me that. Let me tell you a story‌" In telling the stories of the time God provided money to pay the bills, the time God saved us from certain harm or death, the time that God spoke a clear word to give guidance when all of life was confusion, the time that God set us free from a life-controlling sin, the time that God took away a load of guilt and shame and replaced it with freedom, purpose and love -- in telling THOSE stories, we are letting our children know that God is not some fairy tale like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. He is real. He is powerful. He still heals people from deadly sickness. He still sets the addict free. He still provides food and shelter. And He is intimately involved in the lives of His children. In telling THOSE stories, we introduce the living God to our children, and we ourselves are reminded of just some of the reasons that we both fear and love Him, why He deserves our best, our fullest, our very lives. Maybe it's a photograph you need to pull out and hang on your wall. Maybe it's a significant date you need to print in nice script and place on a mirror. Maybe it's a series of colors to describe a simple progression of events which led you from darkness to light. Put them in front of your children. Wait for the questions. Tell the stories.

An Active Adventurer's Story of Success By:Lindsay Paris
O
llie Lee, an active 74-year-old member of the Cleveland community, recently underwent double knee replacement surgery and has spent his inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation therapy at Life Care Center of Cleveland. “After 74 years of good use, my knee was worn out," said Ollie, previously a professor at Lee University for 45 years. He loves staying active— whether it’s tennis, hiking or racquetball he is ready to
play. So, being out of commission for several weeks did not sound pleasing. Ollie began his journey back to an active lifestyle at LCC of Cleveland following his double knee replacement surgery in late November 2012. “Everyone was so helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to make my stay comfortable. I was very impressed with all the staff including the housekeeping and dietary,” said Ollie. He understands that some-
times certain members of a team effort can get overlooked and he was very thankful for all those who played a part in his time at the facility. He was shocked at the tasteful food and the consistency of the culinary flavors, collaborated and served each day. After two weeks of inpatient stay and several weeks of outpatient therapy, Ollie was impressed with the size of the staff and the dedication of each therapist or nurse that worked with him. “All of the therapists, both occupational and physical, were very knowledgeable and effective in their approach to get me back to an active lifestyle." He is grateful for the conscientious service he received throughout his time at the facility. “I had no idea they had that big of an operation running,” Ollie explained when describing the rehab department. Ollie, being an avid hiker and adventurer, is ready to hit the trails and hopes his hiking partner is just as prepared. Ollie’s hiking partner is a buddy from college who has seen many trails with him. Ollie has hiked in Colorado, Kentucky, Utah, Arizona, of course the surrounding states and even in Europe. An active member of the community is an understatement for Mr. Ollie Lee. “I hope to get back on the trail very soon.” Thanks to the staff at Life Care Center of Cleveland, Ollie is happy, active and ready for more adventures.

Buttermilk Pancakes E
By: Deana Thompson
aster is a time to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the most important event in Christian history. Some people begin this day with a sunrise service, remembering that Jesus rose at dawn. Others have a large dinner with family and friends to celebrate the day. This Easter, why not turn your home into a house of pancakes for the special occasion? Pancakes are so easy to make, and there are so many varieties to choose from, that you are sure to please everyone in your household. Buttermilk Pancakes Yields 18 pancakes • 3 c. freshly-milled soft white wheat flour, or 2½ c. all-purpose flour • 1 Tbsp. baking powder • 1½ tsp. baking soda • 1 tsp. salt • 3 eggs • 3 c. buttermilk • 1/3 c. oil
1. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Make a well in the center of the mixture. 2. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs until they are well beaten. Add the buttermilk and oil, and whisk until combined. 3. Add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture in the well. Stir until blended but still slightly lumpy, adding more buttermilk to thin if necessary. 4. Pour ¼ c. of the batter onto a hot, lightly buttered griddle. Cook over medium heat until the pancake is golden brown on the bottom, slightly dry at the edges and has a bubbly surface. Flip and cook the other side until it is lightly browned.
Variations Blueberry - Stir in 2 c. blueberries with the flour mixture, and add 1½ tsp. pure lemon extract (or the zest of 1 lemon) to the liquid mixture. Pecan - Add 1 c. coarsely chopped pecans to the flour mixture. Regular - Omit baking soda, increase baking powder to 2 Tbsp., and substitute milk for the buttermilk. Peach - Add 1½ tsp. cinnamon and 1 tsp. nutmeg to the flour mixture. Add 1 can (15 oz.) peaches, diced into small pieces, to the liquid mixture. Cranberry - Add ¾ c. chopped pecans to the flour mixture. Add 1½ c. chopped cranberries and ½ tsp. pure peppermint extract to the liquid mixture. Gingerbread - Add 1 Tbsp. ground ginger and 1½ tsp. cinnamon to the flour mixture. Add 2 Tbsp. molasses to the liquid mixture.

A Boy And His Beagle By: Rev. Rusty Asble Taking Faith To The Field First Baptist Cleveland
I
t was a long time ago but I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the winter of 1978, I had the chance to visit my dad in South Carolina and spend some time with him in the woods over Christmas break. I was 12 years old and a new hunter. Dad had just acquired a new hunting dog and I had the privilege to name him Wheelie. Wheelie was a tri-color short legged beagle with a great nose and fun disposition. He loved to hunt rabbits. That next Saturday, Dad got me up early. We went to go load the dogs in the truck and to meet his friends who were going to hunt with us that day. We were heading to what they called the ‘ole home place’. I think that was a nicer way of saying ‘the old run down house and broken barn at the edge of an oak thicket/swamp and cut corn field’. As we arrived at the cutover corn field the dogs could sense where we at and what was about to happen. Each hunter greeted each other, swapped stories and gave each other a hard time about the last time they hunted this place. As a boy, I remember it was great to see a group of men treat each other with respect, poke fun at each other and consider it a privilege to be March 2013
able to hunt again. I liked that. I like seeing my dad a part of that. As the bigger dogs were let out of the dog boxes I looked for Wheelie. Being the smallest, he was the last one out. His short legs were running all out to keep up with the bigger and faster dogs. Within a few minutes there was a strike on a rabbit; it was Dads good dogs Rex and Big Boy. They picked up the first scent and all others were in tow with Wheelie bringing up the rear. Dad leaned down to me to make sure I was warm and ready. He told me to stay where the dogs jumped the rabbit because the rabbit would almost always come back to that general area. So I did. Off went the other hunters following the barking dogs through the oaks, past the huge briar thicket, down into the swamp to where I almost could not hear them. There I stood in the field waiting and waiting. No shots, no one else, no dogs, no rabbits…but I loved it I was hunting. Within about 20 minutes, I heard a bark from the swamp. Then more barks coming in my direction. I heard Dad yell out ‘Here they come’ and then I saw it. The rabbit was sneaking across the corn field into a small briar thicket about 30 yards from me. I froze. Here
came the dogs. One by one they came into the field sniffing and barking. Rex struck up a rabbit again and all the dogs took off in the opposite direction back into the swamp. They had missed the rabbit in the briar patch in front of me. About two minutes behind them all, here came Wheelie. His nose was to the ground and tail wagging in the air. He looked up at me, barked once and headed to the briar thicket where the rabbit went. Out pop the rabbit on the other side heading right towards me. I brought my 410 gauge shotgun to my shoulder cocked the hammer and Boom! Cottontail rabbit down! Wheelie popped out of the briars and joined me holding and celebrating our first ever rabbit together. That memory is still fresh in my mind. I go back sometimes to the same place in South Carolina where the ‘ole home place’ use to be. Not much is there anymore. It is all planted in pines and the field still rotated in soybeans, cotton and corn fields. But, what I like about it most while I am there is that I get to remember…remember Dad, remember those men, remember the feeling of my first rabbit hunt and most of all, remember a boy and his beagle. 28

b o c a J n a m Cole By: David Thompson
ribble, shoot, swish. Jab-step, fadeaway, swish. Post up, ball fake, swish. Welcome to the life of Jacob Coleman. A basketball player since the fourth grade, Jacob has devoted his time and energy to basketball with dedication that is rarely seen in other athletes. Now a Junior in high school, his shooting and ballhandling skills are unparalleled by anyone else on his team. Jacob started out playing soccer, but he made the switch to basketball when he realized that in this sport, his height actually gave him an advantage. For the past three years, he has tried to practice or play around two hours each day, and his hard work is paying off. According to his coach, Charlie Cogdill, “He is a student of the game. His shot looks the same every time he shoots, and he is going to play somewhere in college because of that.” However, Jacob knows how to keep his priorities straight. Raised in a Christian household, he committed his life to Christ at age seven. He also believes that his commitment to put God first has been rewarded because of all of the doors that have opened up to him. When he plays basketball, he feels like he honors God back because he is doing something to the best of his ability and keeping good character. During our talk, Jacob shared a few of his goals. He usually sets day-to-day goals during practice, but long-term, he wants to play for a college, preferably the University of Tennessee, and he would like to be able to dunk consistently in the near future. At 6’ 2’’ and only seventeen years old, he is most likely going to get his wish. The NBA is also in his sights, but he is taking it one level at a time. Right now, that level includes being the star of his team at Tennessee Christian Preparatory School in Cleveland. Jacob told me that he likes having teammates that respect and look up to him, because it gives him confidence, and it raises the bar for him as well. But he also feels the responsibility of being the one who is expected to make plays when it matters. Now, Jacob does have other interests: he plays piano very well, and he also enjoys Frisbee. He feels like he has not had to sacrifice any other interests for basketball, though, because he loves the game so much. In fact, he told me that if he isn’t able to practice or form shoot every day, it feels weird. His family supports him in his efforts, and even though they don’t have the same drive that he has, it is not uncommon to find him with his family watching a game together. The one aspect of Jacob that stands out to me more than anything else, though, is his humility and Christ-like attitude. He is undoubtedly the best player on his team, and quite possibly the best in the entire league. But I have never heard him blow his own horn, or brag about how good he is. Even his mindset is different from other players; “I play to have fun, and winning is secondary.” When he scores, he doesn’t just want to bulldoze through people, he wants to make it pretty; that’s what makes the game so fun and exciting. Jacob also feels like he turns basketball into a form of worship while on the court, because when he keeps God first, and uses the talents God gave him, he glorifies his Creator. With his God-given talent, hard work, and passion for the game, Jacob Coleman truly shines like a star in the heavens, a perfect example of how God will bless a person when they put their focus on Him and Him only. With his humble attitude, but the skills of a star, there is no telling how far Jacob will go in basketball. But one thing is sure; his love of the Lord and of the game will never diminish.
