What Needs To Be Destroyed?

Joshua 7:12 KJV, “Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.”

The children of Israel had won their first victory in their conquest of Canaan. It was handed to them by God. They marched around Jericho for seven days and the walls fell flat. You can imagine why they’re feeling pretty good about themselves. The next city to be conquered is Ai (pronounced like our English word “eye”). Instead of sending the whole army, they sent 3000 men. Instead of coming back victorious, they came back with 36 casualties and were defeated. Jericho’s battle was so simple and God fought for them. What happened differently that this battle ended in defeat?

Joshua and the elders begin to pray and ask God what happened that turned His favor from them. God tells Joshua that Israel has sinned. Here in verse 12, God tells Joshua He will not be with them anymore, except they destroy the accursed thing. Joshua did not know what happened that caused the favor of God to turn against them. You might be in the same position.

59. Isaiah tells them it’s not God’s fault. He says to them, “You have chosen iniquities and sin, and that has turned His face from you.” Isaiah 59:1-2 KJV says, “Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear.”

Is this the case for us today? His arm is not too short to save. His ear is not deaf that it cannot hear. If we are not experiencing God‘s divine providence, it is our fault.

My question is: If God‘s favor has turned from you, what are we doing to find out why? Joshua and the elders prayed and asked God to reveal what was wrong. Joshua had to bring the entire nation of Israel before him until God revealed who it was and what had happened. What is it today that needs to be destroyed in your life to restore the favor of God?

If you’re reading this today and realizing that you have caused the favor of God to be removed from your life, let's fix it. Israel turned her back on God again in Isaiah

Yes, there are times that we are tempted or tested. I’m not talking about those times. I’m talking about the times that God has turned away from us because of what we have done. So let me ask again. What needs to be destroyed? I want to do the thing that brings the favor of God into my life. Let’s do it together!

anuary always comes with changes, some of which we choose and some of which we have no control over. We almost always think about changes on a personal level and sometimes forget to think about these changes on a financial level. What changes are in store in 2025 that could have an impact on your savings and retirement planning future?

Let’s take a moment to look at the known changes and how they may benefit your retirement in the future. The Secure 2.0 Act went into effect in 2022 but some of the changes it mandated are to begin in 2025. Annual contribution and catch-up contribution limits to your 401k have increased.

The tax bracket rates would revert to 2017 rates, which would mean higher marginal tax rates across income levels and a top tax rate of 39%. It has been stated that it would be the intent of the new Republican Administration to make these tax cuts permanent, rather than allowing them to expire.

Another change for 2025 is that there are now eligibility requirements for long-term, part-time employees. For 401k plans effective after December 31, 2020, the act provides that the employee be eligible if they have completed 3 consecutive 12-month periods, each with at least 500 hours of service. This will also cover 403b accounts in 2025 as well. For plan years after December 31, 2024, this term is shortened to 2 consecutive 12-month periods and the employee must have obtained age 21 by the end of the second 12-month period. These are all great additions to allowing individuals to save more for retirement.

We also know what the income tax brackets and standard deductions for 2025 will be.

What we do have to keep in mind is that these rates are set to expire on December 31, 2025. If this happens, the deduction amounts would lower to $8,300 for single filers and $16,000 for joint filers.

We can see how to save more for retirement and how tax brackets will affect our income in retirement, what we can’t see or know for sure is how administration policy changes and legislation will affect the markets and the direct impact that may have on our retirement funds. We saw the markets rally after Trump won the presidential election and then level out going into December. There are many unknowns for the economy with possible tariffs, a possible newly appointed Fed Chair in 2025, and a more domestic approach to drilling, all of which would have an impact on the economy and the markets.

Potential sectors that may benefit would be Banks & Financials, Defense, Oil & Gas, Small Cap Companies, and TIPS, while sectors tied to China, Mexico, electric vehicles, healthcare, renewable energy, and long-term Treasuries may decline. Pullbacks in the market are to be expected and understanding that money managers tend to have these pullbacks factored into their current portfolio allocations can help when we see market swings, but, as humans, we most often react with our emotions before analyzing the data. This is where meeting with your financial advisor and diving into your portfolio’s asset allocation mix will be key. A properly diversified portfolio can be allocated to balance out the winners and losers of market sectors so that your portfolio doesn’t decline or rise as sharply as the markets. Retirement planning is a marathon, not a sprint and our reactions to market changes should follow that stance.

Not One, Or Two, But ALL Things

“How do you have the strength or the patience to keep going?” I am often asked this or similar questions when others find out that not only do I work from home, but I also homeschool my son. Moreover, I take care of my other little blessings (under the age of two) while also trying to maintain a clean household. I can answer the above question comfortably and boldly with thanksgiving in my heart, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13 NIV).

There are situations that sometimes occur while working that make me ask the question, “Is this job for me? Am I not good enough? Should I come back to this type of

work when I feel I am able to?” And the last question which encourages me to let me know I must be doing something wrong or right depending on how one looks at it, “Why haven't they fired me yet?” Whether it is rebuke, a warning, or more training, I am thankful that there is still mercy and grace from my place of work. Instead of receiving the rebuke, warning, and training as an insult or attack, I see it as God giving me mercy, grace, and another huge benefit: discipline. As I continue to work my job, God has exposed more dark areas in my life that I need to work on as well as the good things and talents I can do to further my career for the common good.

Furthermore, I have come to find homeschooling is not an easy task to accomplish for many reasons, but the main one is if I, or my child, don’t have patience with one

another as well as with my other children or his younger siblings, homeschooling will not work. Yes, patience with one another is vital in my household (my husband is not excluded). My Lord is patient. He is the ultimate example of who I should look up to when I am feeling anxious and impatient when there are days that my son does not want to fully engage in his lessons while his brother is throwing a tantrum, and the baby is getting fussy, in need of sleep and food. So, when I look to the Lord and call upon Him for His strength in these times, He restores me. I am reminded of how He may feel when I am being a difficult child, yet exposing the disobedience in my heart, in which I am, in turn, remembering to have patience with my children.

Lastly, after finishing work and school with my son, it seems I barely have the energy to do housework. Although I have not been diagnosed with OCD, there are things I have to do to accomplish certain tasks before moving to the next task. Moreover, when my husband lends a helping hand, I sometimes reject it because of the above sentence and so I feel overwhelmed by the mess and wonder how I will get it clean. In addition, I struggle to utilize the help given to accomplish my tasks.

But God exposes the messes in my life and encourages and reminds me, “...With men, this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26 KJV). Enter faith, trust, and hope. He cleanses me of my thoughts of selfinadequacies and places in me a renewed mind of self-worth and improvement. He reminds me to keep ripened fruit like a fresh apple available. This symbolizes patience to me when dealing with my son when he is hungry and cranky. In my son’s weakest moments, I am reminded of myself, just as the Father sent Jesus to save us from our sins when we were weak. And when filth and foulness begin to rave my home and my life, I am reminded that God wants me to give all my anxiety to Him as well as my trust and obedience. He works ALL things out for my good!

for Men Rookie Mistakes

It was a rookie mistake. I didn’t mean to do it. Honestly, I can’t believe it happened! But the proof is in the eyebrows.

Let me explain. About 10 years ago, my boys and my bride bought me my first Big Green Egg. In case you are not aware of what that is, it is a kamado style grill and smoker. They are incredible cookers. You can smoke, grill, bake, sear, broil, etc., the possibilities seem endless. You can hold temps as low as 200 or as high as 800 degrees with the use of two vents: one at the top and one at the bottom.

But be careful. It also can be dangerous, if you forget to burp it.

known as the high sea’s disaster or the sinking of the Titanic which was estimated at $7.5 million dollars in 1912. That’s about $168 million dollars in today’s economy. Plus, the loss of over 1500 souls to the frigid sea.

So how can we prevent “rookie” mistakes that will cost us money, a few burns here or there, or even the loss of life or relationships? Here are three steps that require we ACT.

Acknowledge your propensity to make mistakes. No, this does not mean you are accepting a reality that you will fail or mess up. This just means that you are aware that you are not perfect and can fall short of the goal at times. Part of being able to prevent the failure is realizing that you can fail. Then, putting into place the necessary tools to prevent the mistake or the failure.

Once the Big Green Egg is lit, one must burp or vent the dome, by cracking it slowly multiple times to avoid a flashback. I know this process having used the grill hundreds and hundreds of times. But on Saturday, June 29th I forgot to burp it. As a result, the hair on my left wrist and both eyebrows were singed because of my rookie mistake.

According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, a rookie mistake is “a basic mistake, like one that a person with no experience of an activity would make.” The problem is not just in the mistake but also the result which can sometimes be costly. One of the costliest mistakes is

Correct the action you did not like. That you wish you had never repeated. It could be behavior, a skill set, a choice, etc. If you make the decision to correct the areas of your life that cause you to make repeated mistakes, then you will establish a corrective culture and minimize repeated mistakes.

Think. Much of what happens in our lives is attributed to how we think. Think smart. Think wise. Think pure. Think right. Then…be smart, be wise, be pure, and be right.

Rookie mistakes can also be attributed to a person’s level of maturity. One of my least favorite demographics of people are the childish adults. You know the type. They are not just jovial or fun people, but they act with childish behavior that one should know better than to repeat.

The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13:11 NLT, “When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things…” What childish behavior do you need to put away today? What activity do you need to quit repeating?

Hope

When I was a child, and I wanted that one special gift at Christmas, I would make my Christmas wish and hope that I would get it by being “good.” After all, Santa was watching! Like most children, I couldn’t wait for my birthday to come around because I knew I would get a birthday cake made especially for me by my mom. When it came time to blow out the candles, my family would always shout, “Make a wish first!” I would close my eyes tightly, wishing for one unattainable thing after another every year, always hoping that it would come true. Webster defines “hope” as a desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment.

The hope that God gives is different. “Hope” is the part of faith that looks beyond the present and focuses on the future. Faith and hope walk hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other if you are a Christian. Hebrews 11:1 ESV says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” A lot of people who are new Christians have the impression that once they are saved, they won’t have troubles. But Matthew 5:45 NKJV clearly says that, “He makes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust.” So, when trials come and you feel like you just got tossed in the spin cycle of life, what do you do? You cling to hope like a drowning man at sea clings to a piece of wood. You stay afloat by treading the churning waters of despair and bewilderment. You keep paddling as you look out ahead of you, beyond the present moment, looking through eyes of faith and hope in God!

If we don’t build our lives on the firm foundation of God and His word, we won’t be able to stay afloat and brave the storms of life. Not one of us (especially me) likes to be patient when we are going through tribulation but Romans 12:12 ESV says to “rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and be constant in prayer.”

Life is a series of shifting sand moments, where your feet get knocked out from under you. We’ve all heard the kids’ song based on Matthew 7:24-27 NIV. The foolish man built his house upon the sand. The rains came down and

Hope is the steady hum reverberating in my soul because that’s where the Holy Spirit resides. Without hope in God, there is no true hope at all. So, my prayer for all who read this is, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope!” (Romans 15:13 NIV).

for Marriage Marriage Illusions

What comes to your mind when the subject of marriage is brought up? How glamorous are your thoughts concerning marriage? What is the height of your emotions as the marriage plans begin to occur?

Wow! There’s so much excitement and anticipation when love has born fruit. The wedding plans are now being made. It’s the coming together of two of God’s beautiful creations, a man and a woman, into a relationship. This relationship is completely ordained and blessed by God. It’s even to the point that the two should become as one, knowing what each other's

thoughts are in a given circumstance. Are the glamorous parts of marriage all that marriage is about?

Many, many books have been written on the subject of marriage and the love relationship that is conceived with it. There are so many fantasies about marriage printed on paper that the true concepts of marriage have become an illusion to many.

Marriage is so much more than glamor, fantasies, the lovebug-biting fluff, high emotions, and the enjoyment of all the beautiful wedding plans.

It’s the beginning of a life-long commitment to each other. It's a relationship of growing into being one, together, in the blessings of God.

So, why is it that when so many couples tie the knot and hit the first bump in the road in their marriage, everything seems to begin falling apart?

Maybe it’s because the illusions concerning marriage were not properly considered before the big decision was made.

Many think it’s all about the beautiful bride and groom. It’s about the big plans of the wedding, nice home, the honor and beauty of having children, the priviledge of driving nice cars, dreaming of career success and riches. It’s the setting of the couple, sitting on the front porch, dreaming about the possibilities. But, is that all that marriage is about? Isn’t there more? We’ve

discussed the good parts of the marriage vows, the ones that we are most fond of, but what about the other side? There’s the better, the richer, blessed in health, living in love, and being cherished, but isn’t there more? Some say, ”We'll take the first four and let someone else have the other four.”

The marriage illusion is that there will never be the other four circumstances in our marriage. When the worst happens, the poorer empties the wallet, the sickness includes hospital stays, and even death arrives to sever the cherished vows, the marriage illusion quickly becomes present reality.

Marriage is all inclusive. A man and a woman must be aware of the truth of what constitutes a successful marriage before entering its commitment. The most common marriage vows are very clear in the description of the reality of what marriage truly involves.

If a marriage commitment is entered into without the consideration of everything involved, it will not be successful or it will be full of disappointments, to say the least.

It is Satan’s top pleasure to cause illusions and rock a new marriage from its conception.

Let’s not allow him the pleasure of doing so in the beginning of our marriage plans nor at any point in the time of our marriage as it grows, even to the end, facing death. Marriage is truly a wonderful thing! Marriage is also hard work in making it successful. May we become wise and consider all aspects of marriage before we enter into such of a big, life-changing commitment.

God loves marriage and blesses when two of His beautiful creations connect for a successful, lifelong commitment in the institution of marriage.

Please be aware of all of the circumstances that contribute to a beautiful, happy, and healthy marriage. Our lives will be blessed and likewise, those around us.

for Everyone Blinded by Fear

Have you ever been in a situation in which it feels like all the forces of life are against you? As I write this article on the day after Hurricane Helene devastated much of the Southeast, I wonder how many people who were in Helene’s path might feel like that. Living in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana for several years, we ran from many hurricanes. I understand what it is like to hurriedly evacuate and not know what you will have to come back to. We rode out a few lesser hurricanes, but nothing that packed the devastation of Helene. My heart goes out to those who feel helpless in the face of nature’s power.

Once, when I was staying at a hotel in Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, a strong storm appeared. Bursting through the narrow confines of a mountain pass, it surged into the bowl-like area of the Sea of Galilee with great force. I was amazed at the size and force of the waves it generated. This experience gave me a clearer picture of the disciples’ situation in John 6:18-20 ESV,

18 “The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

The disciples knew their lives were at risk, and they were afraid. Notice that John tells us that after they see Jesus, they are still afraid. It might be Jesus coming to them, but they had other things to worry about. They were focused on the storm and trying to save themselves. Jesus literally says to them, “I am. Do not be afraid.” It is the same phrase that He will use seven more times in John—“I am the bread of life;” “I am the living water;” “I am the resurrection and the life.” And each time Jesus makes that statement, He is pointing His hearers back to that moment on the mountain when Moses asked God His name, and the LORD replied, “I AM, THAT I AM.” However, the disciples didn’t expect to be rescued from the storm, even when the creator OF the storm was present.

The disciples were so overcome by fear in the face of a situation they were totally helpless to control, that even the sight of Jesus did not give them hope. When we experience that same kind of fear, and we cry out to God in desperation, and we feverishly search through the Scriptures hoping we will find some answer, we can be like the drowning man who struggles against his rescuer because all he can see is that he is drowning.

In those moments, Jesus calls out to us, “I am; do not be afraid.” As “I am,” not only does He have power to save us from the storm, but as creator, He has power over the storm. The disciples’ problem is that they were not willing to let go of their fear—that’s why even Jesus’ walking on the water did not phase them. But when we can release our fears and grasp hold of Jesus as the I am, note what happens next: 21 “Then they were glad to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.” (John 6:21 ESV).

The Highchair and Church Service

Parents, this is an object lesson with something you might not have thought of that was even spiritually significant. As we go about our daily lives in the presence of our Almighty God, let us reflect on the simple yet profound imagery of a highchair and what it can teach us about our relationship with our children, the church, and our Heavenly Father. Even a highchair, often used for feeding infants, can reveal deep spiritual truths. Let us delve into the Scriptures to uncover these truths and understand how we, as parents, and as the church, can grow in grace and truth.

1. The Highchair: A Symbol of Growth and Nourishment

The highchair is a place where infants are fed, nourished, and cared for. In the same manner, the church is a place where we come to be spiritually nourished and fed by the Word of God. As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the Word, let us also come to church with a hunger and thirst for righteousness.

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2 KJV).

The church service is a banquet prepared for our souls, where we partake of the bread of life and drink from the living waters. Let us not forsake the assembling of ourselves together but come eagerly to receive the spiritual food that sustains us.

2. The Highchair: A Place of Learning and Training

A highchair is also a place where children learn essential life skills, such as eating and communicating. Similarly, the church is a place where we learn and grow in our faith. It is where we are taught the ways of the Lord and trained in righteousness.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16 KJV).

The church service is a classroom where the Holy Spirit teaches us and guides us into all truth. As we gather together, let us open our hearts and minds to the instruction of the Lord, allowing His Word to shape our thoughts and actions. Let us be doers of the Word, not hearers only, deceiving ourselves.

3. The Highchair: A Place of Community and Fellowship

In a highchair, a child is often surrounded by family, engaging in the communal act of sharing a meal. The church is likewise a place of fellowship, where we come together as the family of God, united in love and purpose.

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42 KJV).

In the church service, we find encouragement, support, and strength from one another. We bear one another’s burdens, rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

4. The Highchair: A Place of Dependence and Trust

A child in a highchair is dependent on their caregiver for sustenance and safety. Similarly, as we come to church, we acknowledge our dependence on God for all things.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV).

As we gather in church, after gathering individually as family units in our homes each week, let us surrender our

fears, anxieties, and burdens to the Lord, trusting that He will guide us and provide for our every need. Let us rest in His promises, knowing that He is faithful and true.

Let us reflect on how a simple highchair can remind us of our time at church. Church is a place where we are nourished, taught, and embraced by the family of God. Let us come with hearts open to receive, learn, and grow.

As parents seeing highchairs each day, may we carry with us the lessons learned from the highchair, applying them in our daily lives and each week as we gather as the church. Let us strive to grow in faith, love, and unity, reflecting the light of Christ to the world around us.

Why I Love These Lyrics

Here are a few reasons why I love this hymn. He walks with me and He talks with me. There are many times I forget that the Lord is right here with me, especially in the overwhelming times or when I'm trying to figure things out all on my own. There are also times I'm celebrating something that no one else could fully understand the excitement of why. The need for someone to “get it” is still there. When I bring it up to the Lord, I know He shares the excitement with me and I feel that it's been acknowledged completely.

He tells me I am His own. I've struggled with being accepted most of my life. In His Word, He tells us we are chosen and that promise addresses my struggle. 1 Peter 2:9 KJV specifically says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

The enemy is good at what he does and tells us the opposite of God’s Word. When God’s Word is in a song, the message tends to linger. It sticks better when melody and lyric paired with the Word. His kindness and His love are tangible with these lyrics. These lyrics paint a beautiful picture of each of us walking and talking with the Lord through this journey of life. It also reminds me of when man fell short of the glory of God and sinned in the garden. God was so gracious and sovereign. God already knew what man would do and had already made a way for him. He made a way for us all through His son Jesus Christ on the cross. He sent His comforter and guide, the Holy Spirit, to walk with us and talk with us. What a comfort and confidence builder: We are never alone!

As we approach the New Year, you have probably made some “New Year’s resolutions.” These are plans we make for the new year at its start, goals we say we will work to achieve, or negative habits we want to break. However, if you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution, chances are you have also not kept it. A resolution is a decision to act on or change something. Far too often, however, we instead resolve not to follow through on our plans, to forsake the goals we set, and to continue

Yes, we can achieve things in life on our own. We can build a career or start a family without following Jesus. But it's only with Jesus that we can use our lives to do things with real, lasting, eternal value. Only by abiding in Him can we bear fruit and do anything that impacts God’s Kingdom. Everything else, according to Jesus, is ultimately futile.

This truth has always been evident. The author of Ecclesiastes said, “I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind” (1:14 ESV). Everything that is done on earth is fleeting. The years and the centuries pass, and along with them, everything men and women work for. This is why Jesus used the illustration of building your house on a rock (recorded in Matthew 7:24-27). This means it is wise to abide in Jesus and live our lives for Him. If we build our lives on Christ, they will stand firm through the storms. But for those who do not heed Jesus’ words, their house—or life—will fall when difficulties come.

The reality is that apart from Him, we can do nothing. It is sad to think that all those who strive for things “under the sun” are ultimately not accomplishing anything. But when we recognize that we can do nothing apart from Jesus, we learn that He is everything. By knowing and abiding in Christ, He will work through us for His purposes.

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 large onion, diced

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

Winter Boosters

With winter upon us, I wonder: do you ever get the winter blues or blahs? Me too! For my discouraged, depressed, or down and out friends this winter season, I’ve been there. And wrote the book, literally. (It will be published soon). But that’s not what I’m talking about. Not taking it lightly or assuming there’s a quick fix, here are a few helpers to keep us all moving along to those “brighter days.” Like the apostle Paul said, “I think myself happy…” These are a few things that move your brain in a higher, happier direction.

You may see it differently but here’s a thought: Laughter really is medicine. It’s scientifically proven that laughing, even if you have to start out faking it (it usually becomes real after a few seconds) releases important chemicals in your brain for emotional health and it also vibrates your organs for physical health benefits. So I have had times when I begged my friends to make me laugh. I would send out texts or post a request for friends to send me funny memes or videos or jokes. My kids would start rolling in with hilarious TikToks, or friends would comment with a string of memes. Sometimes I would just go on YouTube myself and search “funny animal videos” or stream a movie guaranteed to make me laugh. My number one picks are Nacho Libre and Pure Luck. Both of those literally make me laugh out loud.

This is also something that is scientifically proven to release endorphins in your brain: exercise. Go to the gym, drag a friend along, play basketball, or go roller skating with some kids or kidsat-heart. A double endorphin blessing is to exercise while looking at beautiful scenery, like going for a walk or a jog at a nice park or nature trail. I hike because it’s my therapy! The beauty of nature and the struggle to gain altitude gives me a rush!

One more thing that gets the happy chemicals flowing is accomplishment. The feeling of having conquered something or learning something new floods our brains with boosters. A strenuous hike up to an awesome overlook, or waterfall, gets my muscles screaming while my heart is pounding and my mind is declaring “But look what I did!” Try these on for size:

• Tackle a home improvement project, even if it’s cleaning out the closets!

• Find some YouTube videos that teach you how to make something or cook an exotic new recipe.

• Download an app to learn a new language.

Lastly, my favorite is worshipping the Lord. If I can put on some awesome worship music (or even better, if I can go to a worship gathering someplace where they’re really going to take time to go deep), there’s just something about lifting up the Lord that lifts me up also!

You have friends and family who love you but they get busy and might not be thinking of you at exactly the moment you need them. It’s okay to reach out to them and ask for attention. Snap your selfie in the gym or on a mountain top and send it to them to show off what you did. They will be happy along with you! Send them another reminder: “Make me laugh!” They will be happy to do that. But, here’s the best reminder: don’t forget the love of the Lord. Do a search of all those “Jesus Loves Me” scriptures and read them, write them, and say them out loud. Keep yourself reminded that He is with you, cheering you on, and celebrating you!

From our first conversation in the parking lot of the hospital where I work, I knew there was something special and unique about Garrett. I felt as if I had known him for years. There was something familiarly settling about him; he had an old soul. There was a depth about him that was intriguing. He was mature beyond his years, and he spoke with such grace and wisdom that I had to remind myself that I did not know this newly found brother-friend.

It’s amazing that shortly after our parking lot conversation, he joined our Senior Care team! Every morning, we would have “chats” about a variety of things such as family, friends, and God! We would get so excited that it felt like church. We were both laughing, smiling, and saying “Amen!”

With enthusiastic intentionality, I saw Garrett engaging with staff at a new empathic level. He listened intently to needs and concerns so much so, that if anyone needed anything, I would hear staff say, “just ask Garrett, he’ll get it done!” I smiled as I saw him making small, but significant differences in the work atmosphere. He wanted better for us and in his distinctly “SouthernNanna” accent, would say with a smile, “Terrie, it’s time to level up, love you, mean it!” Whether it was decorating the staff lounge, ordering needed items in a

timely fashion, cleaning spaces that needed to be cleaned, improving office spaces, ordering gifts for staff, recognizing and celebrating staff accomplishments and professional days, making sure that we had appropriate equipment, as well as rearranging chairs and furniture in work spaces that were ergonomically beneficial to our wellbeing, Garrett, “read the room” and didn’t miss anything. He even noticed that my phone charger needed to be replaced and yes, he gave me a new one! Garrett’s actions lovingly shouted to us all, “Level up!” Be more. Do more. Expect more. Get more. Give more.

As I have reflected on Garrett’s challenge to us all, I think of the loving challenge God has given us in His word. He tells in John 10:10, that amid stealing, killing and destruction, we are called to more, to rise above the chaotic noise. We are called to life, not death and we are called abundance, not lack! I thank God for my brother-friend Garrett who values us all enough to challenge, yes even to stretch us to higher heights. I’m thankful that God’s desire for us all is to embrace goodness, hope, joy, possibilities, and abundance. God wants us to “Level up” to the abundance He has in store for us.

I challenge us all to embrace it. Grab it. Take God up on His offer of abundance! We should look up, speak up, live up! I honestly believe God smiles when He hears His son remind His children to “Level up!” How can you embrace John 10:10 and begin to live a life of abundance and “Level up?”

The Good News, You Are More Than

After all the Christmas decorations are packed and returned to the attic, and the children head back to school, things are slowly settling back to normal. A long January ushers in new beginnings, fresh challenges, and opportunities to start the year on the right foot.

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? I used to make resolutions every year, but I stopped because I was tired of falling short and disappointing myself. Did you know sources indicate the average New Year’s resolution is broken before January 31?

A few years ago, at AdventHealth, we did an advertising campaign centered around the concept of ditching traditional resolutions and instead focusing on living with resolve. The headline was “Fewer Resolutions, More Resolve,” and I loved it.

As we start 2025, I’m not going to ask you to make resolutions, but I would like to encourage you to have resolve. Take some time to think about the things in your life that you can adjust—even slightly—and get closer to becoming the person God intended you to be.

For whatever it’s worth, here’s my list of 10 qualities I’m resolving to work on in 2025:

I resolve to be loving.

I resolve to be forgiving.

I resolve to be positive and optimistic.

I resolve to be peaceful.

I resolve to be content.

I resolve to be proactive.

I resolve to be intentional.

I resolve to be consistent.

I resolve to be more present.

I resolve to assume positive intent.

There’s no magic to coming up with ten, just come up with whatever feels right for you. The truth is, I’m addicted to these types of things, and ten is overkill—kinda makes it hard to focus. (Maybe I should add “I resolve to be focused” to my list, but that would be crazy because no one has enough resolve to focus on eleven items!)

Perhaps a more realistic strategy would be to identify a single word for 2025—a word that you can own and make yours throughout 2025. This word would be one you can carry with you as your north star, your bullseye, and your personal battle cry for the year.

So, think about it. What’s your word for 2025? Skip the resolutions and resolve to focus on one word. My friend’s word for the year is intentional. His goal is to be intentional with his family, with his work, with his relationships, with his faith, with his time, and with his finances. I really like this because his word—intentional—will impact several areas of his life, resulting in significant positive gains for the year.

At the heart of resolutions is the desire we all have—at least I hope you have!—of becoming a better version of yourself.

I recently came across the following quote that really resonated with me: “Who you are is God’s gift to you. And who you become is your gift to Him.”

Think about that for a minute. Go ahead re-read it.

What does God want for you? And what does He want FROM you?

Aesop, in his classic fable “The Tortoise and the Hare,” teaches us that slow and steady wins the race. And current author, James Clear, in his wildly popular book, Atomic Habits, reminds us that small, incremental adjustments every day add up to significant improvements over time.

Aesop and Clear remind me of the fact that God has given me the tools I need and the foundation to do something remarkable for Him. And maybe that’s the best New Year’s resolution of all.

Don’t Quit

Have you ever felt like throwing in the towel and calling it quits? I have on multiple occasions! I never could bring myself to do it. Maybe it's that little spiteful attitude I've had since childhood, "I'm going to show you I can do it." That attitude may have gotten me in trouble quite a few times. However, it's the same attitude that has kept me persevering. My parents said I came into this world fighting with complications during birth. Then at two years of age, I was fighting for my life with my first severe asthma attack. At eight years of age, I learned I had a learning disability, which made learning very difficult, especially in math and language arts. I read my first book by myself at age ten on a kindergarten reading level. I was told by many people, even the ones close to me, that I would never amount to anything.

However in 2013, after graduating high school with a special needs diploma, I graduated with my Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. I thank God for His grace and for carrying me through my studies. In May 2021, I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Christian Ministry, finally pursuing my calling. And currently, I am pursuing my Master's Degree in Pastoral Counseling.

In October 2021, I earned my Exhorter license, the first level of minister in the Church of God. In January 2022, I earned credentials for Community Service Volunteer Chaplain. In June 2024, I began MIP (Ministerial Internship Program) in the Church of God.

Trust me, I had plenty of nay-sayers during this whole process. I didn't let that stop me this time. One of my first challenges was that I knew there was a possibility that I would have to go to another church during the internship. That frightened me more than anything! I'm not big on change, including trying new churches. Dealing with childhood trauma from churches threatened to hinder me. At least this time, I had a wonderful man of God by my side, my husband.

Last July, my husband and I were in Florida visiting our dads. After dinner with my best friend one evening, I received a phone call. I sensed something was wrong. (It didn't help that I was also dealing with food poisoning at the time as well.) My daughter had been in a severe car accident resulting in injuries. It was a hard recovery journey. Today, praise God, she is stronger than ever.

In August 2024, right before MIP was starting, I received a call that my father was killed in an accident. That crushed me! The following Sunday, I had to go to a church where I knew no one and, to top it off, grieve with people who were strangers. Talk about change! Oh, but God always had a plan.

That Sunday morning, I walked into the doors of the Ocoee Church of God and was greeted with nothing but love and met my supervising pastors, the Whitmires.

On May 18th, 2024, I was commissioned for MIP. I felt a pang of sadness that my father wasn't there in the front

row, as he had promised. Not only was there an empty seat, there was an empty spot in my heart. However, I imagined him standing beside Jesus cheering me on. My supervising pastors went above and beyond for me; I was touched when they all wore mint green so we could match. It's the small gestures in life that hold such

significance. They have become my spiritual parents, and I am eternally grateful.

God knew what I needed and made a way, as He always does. He called me for this moment, and I will continue to strive towards the goal, for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14 NKJV).

So what does all this mean to you? It means that you can also hold on, keep trying, and never give up. You, too, can heal from trauma and reach your goals. You, too, can rely on God for perseverance, healing, and seeing your dreams become reality. God is our strength and our song. We can accomplish all things through Him. When the world says you can't, God says you can. When the world says you are nothing, God says you are chosen; you are His.

Flying Jewels

One hot summer day, Jewell, the caterpillar, crept along complaining as she crawled.

“If I had been a duck, I’d have been the ugly duckling.” Never mind that she and her fellow caterpillars looked alike. She couldn’t see passed her worm-like appearance.

“Mom, why did you give someone creepy like me an elegant name? I wish I looked like you.”

“Wings like my mother has?” came her heartfelt hope.

At the right time, Jewell emerged with bright yellow/ orange wings edged in black. Transformed into a delicate, graceful butterfly, she finally fit her name…Flying Jewell.

soon find out, her Creator had fashioned her uniquely. Jewell awoke to find her unattractive body becoming wrapped in a cocoon. She didn’t understand, yet it seemed the most natural occurrence and she easily gave into the process.

Joining the many other “flying jewels," she brought the beauty of new birth to the world: from a creepy, complaining caterpillar to a gentle, graceful, breath-taking, exquisite butterfly.

Exploring Truth Through God’s Creation

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away; behold all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5: 17 NKJV).

The Butterfly and You

Discontentment and lack of patience cause us to be unhappy and unable to learn the truth about our sinful nature. When at last we receive Jesus Christ into our hearts, He enables us to work out the beauty He has put in us. Be content (accepting) in your circumstances and show joy! In Christ, you have been transformed from your old self into a new, ‘uniquely His’ creation. You can be a “flying jewel” for His kingdom!

The Illusion of Control

We plan; we schedule; we dream; and we make arrangements. I am somewhat skillful at sending my blueprints to God while praying. My finite mind often has every detail reckoned. As long as God follows my plans, life is good. I’m sure it will all work out perfectly.

An old German adage says, “Mann tracht un Gott lacht,” meaning “Man plans and God laughs.” Our security in all of the planning and arranging is simply an illusion. We have nothing in our control. It only takes an unexpected illness to teach that. It can come on suddenly. It can be prolonged or short-lived. Without warning, schedules alter to include numerous doctor appointments and hospital stays. The illusion shatters, just like a mirror crashing on the floor. What we once had arranged in neatly packaged hours, days, weeks, and months are now scattered and overwhelm a tiring body, mind, and spirit.

I have found that the breaking of the illusion is as devastating as the illness. It is challenging to come to grips with my lack of control, which has brought to the forefront of my mind my lack of trust in the Creator, who is sovereign over all. I have never had the control I perceived, but He has never for a moment lost control. Not once has He been surprised at a doctor’s words of prognosis. Our loving Father has never turned a blind eye to any of His children. He has not ever taken His hands off of our situations. He constantly moves, directs, changes, leads, grows, and loves us throughout the journey. My plans fail, but He never fails. My heart breaks, but He never turns away. The questions may overwhelm me, yet He remains faithful and unchanging. My hope cannot be in my failing, aging body. It cannot be in medical teams. It cannot be in my family, even though family is one of my most cherished blessings. My hope is only secure when it is in God. And that is not an illusion.

1 Peter 1:13 ESV says, “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Here is where our hope can be firm and secure: Philippians 1:6 ESV, “And I am sure that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Romans 15:13 ESV says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

I can securely place my hope on the God of hope. May I be found faithful with a secure hope in the One whose love never fails, Jesus Christ, Loving Father, Awesome Creator, Eternal God.

May I live out Romans 12:12 ESV daily, moment by moment: “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
