On the First Day of the Week e associate Easter with springtime. The sun’s journey appears to take longer across the sky. We can step in its path and feel just a bit more warmth. Birds—returning after a long winter’s hiatus—now take up residence on the deck around the bird feeder. We know it’s spring, so we know it’s Easter. That’s why we associate so many bunny rabbits and eggs with the holiday. We may be forgiven for thinking that spring is the season of
resurrection. Yes, we may be forgiven. But it is forgiveness that we would need. Easter, you see, isn’t a season in nature’s cycle. Resurrection is not a stage in the circle of life. The Kingdom of God is not a hidden potential in this world. There is no power within us that will bring about the new creation. Easter isn’t an awakening or a rejuvenation or a resuscitation, or even a miraculous reversal of death. Resurrection is something else altogether, something wholly other, something from beyond, something purely unnatural. Resurrection is God. “All things are of God,” Paul declares (2 Corinthians 5:18). If Good Friday is about Jesus’ life being brutally interrupted, captured, and destroyed by the powers of sin

and death, Easter is about Jesus’ death being even more brutally interrupted, captured, and destroyed by God. Resurrection is the unimaginable power of God’s very own eternal life coming upon the lifeless, empty body of Jesus. Life swallows death. Resurrection is Jesus’ death swallowed up in divine victory. Easter is God. And that’s why Paul speaks of a new creation. Jesus Christ lives because God has called forth a new reality from the nothingness of death. The new creation and the resurrection life of God can never be acquired by winning the competition over the scarce resources of life, nor even more gently: by trying harder, planning strategically, employing best practices, gaining more control, moving the agenda forward, or being purposedriven. There is no way from here to the new creation. There is no way from here to the kingdom of resurrection. The kingdom can only come. The new creation can only be given. The new creation is given by God. “All things are of God,” declares Paul. And it is all from God through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It comes to us from God only because God has made all of us, the whole of humanity, sharers in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Christ, we have already died. When Christ died, we died with him. “If One died for all, then all died,” says Paul (2 Corinthians 5:14). Early on the first day of the week, God does something absolutely new. All of creation in its bondage to death and all of humanity in its bondage to sin is gathered up into this one human body. Early on the first day of the week, creation begins again, humanity begins again, and life begins again. “All things are of God.” About The Author

Know Your Risk (Tolerance) MONEY MATTERS

o, let’s pretend you’re a regular reader of my columns for the past few years. You’ve educated yourself about the necessary steps to prepare to invest in order to grow your money for future needs or wants—maybe retirement, maybe funding your kids’ college education, maybe taking care of an aging relative or enjoying that “dream vacation” or other “bucket list” item. In order to realize these dreams, you must first start with one simple task—learn to live on less money than you earn. It’s very simple, but not necessarily easy—there’s a difference! The concept is very simple indeed—however much money you or your household earn every month, be sure you have some money left over after paying bills every month so you can save and invest. That may mean cutting out unnecessary expenses in order to have money left over each month, or it may mean taking on extra jobs to earn more income, or a combination of both. Ok, now what? How do you decide where to invest your money so it can grow over time to meet your goals and plans? Your employer’s retirement plan like a 401(k) or 403(b) is a great place to start since the money comes directly out of your paycheck before taxes are deducted, saving you from a higher tax bill year after year. Those without a retirement plan at work should open a Roth IRA account for themselves. But this still doesn’t address the issue of where or how to invest your money. Both the retirement plan at your job as well as the Roth IRA offer numerous choices for investing your money—stock mutual funds? Bond mutual funds? Money market accounts? Real estate investment trusts? Large or small stocks? U.S. or foreign stocks and bonds?

Before making these decisions, it’s important to be honest with yourself about your own “risk tolerance”— how much risk can you tolerate personally with your investments? Are you a Nervous Nelly who would probably sell your investments in a panic anytime the stock market takes a nosedive? Or could you remain calm for several years and “let it ride” even if the market kept moving lower? The answers to these questions should help you determine how much of your investments should be in stocks or stock mutual funds, how much in bonds, how much in money markets or bank certificates of deposit, etc. Here’s my recommendation: go to this website www. talkingrealmoney.com and you’ll see a box which says “Take Our Free RisQuiz.” Click it and take the “risk quiz.” Be honest as you answer the questions, and you’ll get a clearer picture of your own personal tolerance for taking risks with your money when investing. Those who score extremely “low” on the Risk Quiz will realize they are unable to tolerate much risk or fluctuations in the stock market as it might zip wildly up and down. They might need to stick to more conservative investments like bonds and CD’s in order to avoid selling in a panic when the stock market is down. On the other hand, a high score (with 100 being the highest possible score) might indicate that one is comfortable with investing in stock mutual funds and will not sell in a panic when the market drops. By knowing yourself and your risk tolerance, you’ll be able to make wiser financial decisions. As one of the lines in Shakespeare’s Hamlet reminds us, “To thine own self be true . . .”

Strength in Adversity aving strength is the state of being physically strong. However, physical strength is not the only kind of strength we need as women each day. We need emotional and spiritual strength on a daily basis. That alone can be a challenge as we daily face situations in life. So, the question I have for you is, “Where do you find your strength?” I want to share with you the one and only place you will find your true strength that will not only help you in day-to-day life but will both prepare and equip you for the unforseen adversity that, if it has not yet come your way, will.
That strength is found in Jesus Christ. Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Our true strength comes from the Lord. I want to share a time in my life that I felt God strengthen me through the power of His Word and the power of the Holy Spirit. When I was a teenager, I dreamed of growing up, getting married, and having kids. Kids were always in my future in my heart and mind. So, when I became pregnant at the age of 23, I was super excited; but, after a few short months, I had a miscarriage. I was beyond heartbroken. There are no words to describe the heartache I went through. Years later, I begin to pray for a child. I prayed earnestly the prayer of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:11, and God spoke to my spirit and said that He would give me a male child and to name him Samuel, which means “heard by God.”

I stayed faithful to the Lord and my church. In October of 2002, I became pregnant and miscarried for a second time. This time was different; I did not allow discouragement and depression to enter my mind and life. I remembered what God had said and His promise to give me “Samuel.” I prayed and I believed His words. I surrounded myself with family and godly friends. When I was too weak to stay in God’s Word, I would play CDs. I was allowing God to fill me up with His Spirit, increasing my faith and strengthening me for His journey. My doctor suspected I had lupus, a terrible disease that could be causing the miscarriages. I decided to take God at His word and declare my healing and that I would have a child. One Sunday morning at church, our pastor prayed and anointed me with oil as believers entered into the power of agreement that I would be made whole. I awaited my next doctor’s visit. I was going for some extensive testing. God had a different plan and, to the doctor’s amazement, I was pregnant. It had only been a few weeks since the miscarriage. God had healed me and given me a pregnancy “at the same time.” Luke 18:27: “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” God gave us a miracle. Today, my miracle is getting ready to turn 16 years old, and I have a second miracle who is eight. As Christians, we can find our answer to every problem in the Word of God. Find a promise in the Bible that pertains to your situation and pray it, declare it out loud, believe it, and trust God. He will give you the strength as you trust in Him. He loves you and knows everything about you. The Word says that He will give you the desires of your heart. My prayer is that you will begin to spend time in His Word, listening to worship music, in prayer, and declaring His Word over your life so that you will begin to hear from Him. Once you get a word from God, you will know your answer is coming. Your life will be changed. You can overcome adversity through His strength.

ow many times has your physician or dentist written you a prescription for an opioid painkiller like Percocet or hydrocodone that you did not finish taking? What did you do with the remainder of the pills? I know; you put them in your medicine cabinet just in case you needed them again. You are obviously not alone. But did you know they pose a potential risk to children, teens, and adults? According to Steve Crump, District Attorney for the 10th Judicial District of Tennessee, the cause of 53% of deaths by overdose is traced back to someone’s medicine cabinet. Do you ever let individuals outside your household use your bathroom? Maybe a friend, child, relative, pastor, realtor, exterminator, police officer, or neighbor? You get the picture. We offer this form of hospitality without forethought; however, literally thousands of people either get their start on their journey toward addiction or sustain their addiction by helping themselves to someone else’s medicine cabinet. As stated above, statistics bear this out, and stories told by many local people confirm this reality. If you are currently taking opioids for pain, keep track of how many you have, so that you will know if any are missing, and keep them locked up. Medication lock boxes are available for purchase, but a money safe or gun safe work just as well. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) provides a safe process for disposing of unused medications to protect families and communities. Two times per year, ATS The Bridge collaborates with the DEA to make our region a safer place by holding drug take back events. Their purpose is to reduce the number of homes that have on hand opioid painkillers, as well as other medicines that should not be kept around due to the risk of abuse.

Disposing of unwanted and/or expired medications through participating in a drug take back not only protects our citizens but also protects our environment. Will it Leave a Scar? car formation is the telltale sign of a skin wound healing from either a traumatic injury or from surgery. For most patients, scars are not a badge of courage. Rather, patients equate the aesthetic appearance of a scar as the most important measurement criteria to judge the surgical outcome of a procedure. Scar revision does not erase a scar but helps to make it less noticeable and more acceptable. So what makes a beautiful scar? The cause of the traumatic injury directs the pathway of healing and has a big influence on the final appearance of a healed scar. Traumatic crush injuries cause tearing rather than cutting of the skin, with some areas of skin loss. If the tissues are approximated or brought together with sutures, then the healing of the wound is improved. Infections, bleeding, poor nutrition, poor blood flow, and genetic collagen malformations can have negative impacts on wound healing, leading to “ugly” scars. A “scarless” operative procedure is not possible. Entering or traumatizing the skin is going to leave a mark. However, a skillful surgeon has many techniques to improve the chances of a wound healing excellently, with minimal scarring. Choice of incision placement, tissue respect, decrease in blood loss, wound care, suture choice, suture techniques, and post-operative management are just a few variables that can be addressed for best scar healing. What can you do if a scar heals poorly? First, ongoing assessment must be completed by the surgeon during the healing process. Scar modulation can be completed in early phases of healing. In other words, a poorly-healing scar can be redirected to better healing by modulation techniques. The various factors which should be considered before doing scar revision are: 1. Patients with unrealistic expectations. It is important to explain to the patient that scar revision will improve, but not erase, the scar and it may require multiple surgical procedures along with adjunct treatments in order to obtain an optimal result over a period of many months or years. 2. Time of scar revision. Due to continuous collagen remodeling, it takes around 12-18 months for the scar to mature and gain the tensile strength of 70-80% of uninjured skin. 3. Nutritional status and medical history. A well-balanced diet is essential for good protein synthesis. Vitamins A, C, and E and zinc help in wound healing. Medical conditions like

diabetes mellitus and immunosuppression negatively affect wound healing. 4. Tobacco. Tobacco use causes low tissue oxygen with vessel constriction and delays wound healing. It is preferable for patients to stop smoking four weeks before to four weeks after scar revision. Non–surgical techniques: 1. Camouflage. Makeup, hair, accessories like scarves, and tattooing can help to camouflage the scar. 2. Topical therapy. Hyperpigmented scars can be lightened by using acids and steroids. Use of topical silicone gel or silicone sheets improves the texture and the color of the scar. 3. Injection agents. Scar injection of corticosteroids reduces scar formation by inhibition of inflammatory mediators. Injection Botox has shown improvement of facial scars. It acts by causing temporary muscular paralysis, which decreases the tension vectors on the wound edges and helps in wound healing. 4. Cryotherapy. Cryotherapy, or freezing of scars, either alone or in combination with intralesional corticosteroids or surgical excision, is used in the management of hypertrophic scars and keloids. 5. Laser resurfacing. Vbeam lasers, pulsed carbon dioxide, and pulsed erbium:YAG laser resurfacing cause superficial scar remodeling with texture changes and color changes to improve scarring. 6. Soft tissue fillers. Collagen, fat, hyaluronic acid, and other synthetic fillers can be used to elevate depressed and pitted scars. Surgical techniques: Many times, poor surgical scar healing must be ultimately addressed with a surgical procedure. A planned secondary surgical approach can tip the healing scale in favor of a cosmetically pleasing scar. The timing of scar revision is dependent on many factors. said “no” to God. In fact, I told Him “no” several times. I am grateful He refused to give up and encouraged me to create my first piece of prophetic art. I remember
how He brought the image up to me over and over again. I remember how He connected me to the image. I remember I felt like I would be consumed if I didn’t create the art that God the Father laid on my heart. It became as “fire shut up in my bones” (Jeremiah 20:9). I also remember my complete surprise and delight at how God used that creation to speak His love at just the right moment to its receivers. He used my art to speak to them and, by speaking to them, He ultimately spoke to me. I am an artist. I have an inner drive to create art. When I see sunlight dancing through the leaves of a tree or a deep shadow that makes the color of the petals of a flower “pop,” it delights my eyes. What about that wistful look in a dog’s eyes or the way a curl of hair gently frames a child’s face? It is fascinating. Humor, love, vastness, intricacy, light, shadow, movement, friendship, and so much more wind their way into my heart, and my desire is to capture that moment on canvas and share it with the world. My artist statement, “From my heart to the canvas,” developed when the Holy Spirit revealed this connection to me: not only with the image but also with the story. There is a story to be told that words cannot express, a story that can only be told with color and imagery, a story that not only has the desire to be told, but that needs to be seen repeatedly. By

aster and eggs. Over the centuries, these two entities have had more in common than just the initial letter E. Children dye eggs, hunt for eggs, and eat chocolate eggs at Easter.
Yet, there is a deeper similarity between the egg and Resurrection Sunday, as some prefer to call Easter. An egg represents the hope of a new life. The shell is encasing a life—exactly what it will look like we may not know—and, given enough incubation time, that life will break through the shell and truly begin living. It was alive before, with a beating heart and moving limbs, but when it breaks through the shell, life will happen on a whole new level. Jesus lived on this earth as a human, experiencing the joy, the sorrow, and the pain. But when He broke through the barrier of death, defeating it (1 Corinthians 15:54), He experienced life in a whole new dimension. And because He lives, we also can live (John 14:19). That is our hope. That is the hope for the sinner who, going through the motions of life, one day finds Jesus and breaks through the shell of sin to truly begin living as God designed him or her to live. That is the hope for the Christian who, prayerfully living life and seeking to keep step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), still yearns for the day “this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:53)—when we will break through the physical barrier and truly live with the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:17). So this Easter, when eggs in all
different sizes, colors, and consistencies are being sold all around you, remember that they stand for hope: hope for you, hope for me, and hope for all humanity.

Oven Omelet • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter • 9 eggs • ½ c. sour cream • ½ c. milk • 1 tsp. salt • ¼ tsp. dried basil leaves • 1 c. shredded cheddar cheese • 2 green onions (with tops), thinly sliced (or 2 Tbsp. finely diced onion) • ½ of a green, orange, or yellow bell pepper, diced • 1 - 2oz. jar diced pimientos, drained 1. Place the butter in an 8x8 baking dish. Slide the dish in the oven, and set the temperature for 325°F. 2. In a large bowl, beat with an electric mixer the eggs until light and frothy. Add the sour cream, milk, salt, and basil and beat until blended. 3. Stir in the cheese, onions, bell pepper, and pimiento. 4. Using oven mitts, remove the dish from the oven, tilting it to coat the bottom and sides with the melted butter. Pour the egg mixture into the baking dish. 5. Cook uncovered for 40-45 minutes, or until the omelet is set but still moist. 6. Cut into serving portions. Do Ahead Tip: After pouring the egg mixture into the baking dish, cover the dish and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Cook uncovered for 50-55 minutes.

Don’t…Just Don’t t’s amazing how you can read the Bible and never realize what you are reading. From Jesus washing feet to predicting Peter’s betrayal to saying He is going to prepare a place for us, I’ve heard it many times. This leads us to John 14:1: “Let not your heart be troubled [afraid, cowardly]; you believe [confidently] in God [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, and keep going], believe also in Me.” I want to zero in on that first statement: “Let not your heart be troubled.” Jesus was referencing the feelings his disciples were experiencing in relation to His crucifixion, but He said something crucial: do not LET your heart be troubled, meaning we can control when our heart is troubled. You may not be able to control what circumstances may come—for instance, if your leader is about to be crucified—but you can control if your heart is troubled. Today’s culture tells us to explore our feelings, to not be afraid to feel our feelings, and to follow the path they are leading us down, claiming them as our identity, no matter the ethical or spiritual conclusion. But here, Jesus tells us the opposite: that we can let our hearts NOT be troubled. The word “troubled” means just what you think. It can mean to trouble, agitate, take away calmness of mind, make restless, to strike one’s spirit with fear and dread, to render anxious or distressed, or to perplex one’s mind by suggesting scruples or doubts. Strong’s Concordance says it means to stir or agitate (roil water). The word “roil” means to muddy the water by agitating the sediment, and it provides a clear picture of this verse. Most of us have witnessed what happens when sediment gets stirred up in water. The once-clear water becomes muddy. This muddiness is what can happen within our hearts. Strong’s, once again, gives a clear picture that our hearts can figuratively mean our thoughts, feelings, and mind. Our hearts can be serene and clear; then, something is said or thought that begins to muddy the waters. What things can trouble our hearts? Fear, anger, being upset, worry, sadness, and stress. Those types of emotions and feelings are common among us all. In any given day, we can experience them all. However, let’s not jump to our medicine cabinet, our television, or phones in an attempt to

escape before we take our troubled, muddled thoughts and hearts to the One who created us. Let’s get practical. How do we not let our hearts take control and spin us into a deep spiral of despair? It comes from knowing God’s Word and from prayer. We have totally underestimated the power of praying the Word of God. Here is how it works in my life. In 2017, after returning from a missions trip, my husband and I hydroplaned and totaled our car. Anytime I have to drive in the rain, my default setting is to be nervous. There have been times where I was on the verge of a panic attack.
What did I do? I started to declare the promises of God out loud while driving. I started praying, “God, I thank You that You are with me (Hebrews 13:5, Matthew 28:20, Isaiah 41:10). I thank You that You haven’t left me or forsaken me. I thank You that You are my front guard and my rear guard (Isaiah 52:12). I know You have not given me a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7) and You tell me to not let my heart be troubled (John 14:1), so I take authority over this fear and say it has to go in the name of Jesus. God, I praise and thank You for watching over us and keeping us safe, both now and forevermore (Psalm 121). Amen.” There is no better way to clear the muddy heart than to introduce truth.

Life Is a Candle

andles. Store aisles are dedicated to the sale of many types and fragrances. Most of us are fascinated as we watch one burn. No two candles burn down at the same
speed or pattern. As I’m watching a glitter-filled candle burn, I think to myself
that his setting is filled with beauty, a sense of calm, and peace. The small candle flame lights up most of the room with flickers of light as the flame dances atop the candle. Soon, a clear puddle
What would the appearance of the wax look like? Would my candle still be glowing? Wax doesn’t burn; neither does the glitter. They just melt down, continuously exposing the wick so it will burn. Can you imagine a pile of wax filled with shiny glitter uniquely formed where the candle was sitting? Do you remember the song, This Little Light of Mine? “Hide it under a bushel? NO! I’m gonna to let it shine.” We all sang this little chorus with gusto! I’m going to let my life’s candle shine unobstructed, lighting up the world in which I live. What happened to some of us? What was able to snuff out our flame? A single flame burns the wick down and melts the wax away, leaving a uniquely solidified pile of wax at its base. As I live my life, my candle burns down shorter and shorter. When my fire has successfully consumed all of the wick, my life is finished. As I look back upon my life and view the melted wax at life’s end, did I reflect the light of the world as I should? Did those around me see the uniqueness of God’s creation in me? Does anyone remember the shiny glitter? It's satan’s business to continually try to snuff out the flame of God instilled in us at our creation. All babies are cute and innocent at birth, but they all grow up. As
