G ò0 dNews from the Pastor’s Desk
By Pastor Larry Cockerham assion is defined as “a powerful emotion” or “boundless enthusiasm.” The German philosopher and inventor, Hagel said, “Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.” Steve Jobs, cofounder of Apple, Inc, said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, and don’t settle.” What has God called you to do? What’s keeping you from fulfilling the passionate vision of God in your life? Are you held back by feelings of insecurity, inadequacy and fear of failure. Have you got negative words and pictures stuck in your mind? Or are you just complacent with living a passionless life? The Bible tells us to “Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you.” (2 Tim 1:6) Let me suggest three ways to restart the fire in your life. 1. Renounce complacency. Remove the lies of the devil. Break the power of negative words and self image. We will never do anything great if we just settle for whatever comes. 2. Remember the passion. Stir up the dreams God has already put in your life. Remember your calling. Find some motivating verses in the Bible and think about what God has said about you. 3. Reignite the Fire. Hang out with God in worship, the Word and waiting in His presence. God is the source of motivation and passion. The Holy Spirit will ignite the fire of passion within you. Another way to reignite the fire in your life is to hang out with passionate, Godloving people. Get rid of the wet-blanket people from your life. Spend time with on-fire people. When you hang out with people who are burning with passion for God, you’re likely to catch fire yourself. Don’t let anything steal the passionate life God has planned for you. Don’t let temporary failure stop you from eventual success. When Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, failed in his 5000th attempt, his response was: “I am not a failure. Rather I have successfully identified and eliminated 5000 ways that do not work, which brings me 5000 steps closer to discovering the one way that will work.” I believe God wants to blow on the coals of vision in your heart and restore your passion. You can have a renewed vision, a restored passion and a fire burning in your chest. LIfe isn’t always easy, but when you have passion and purpose, you can be successful no matter what comes your way. God is passionate about you. He burns with passion for you. He wants to set your heart ablaze in a passionate relationship with Him. John Wesley, the great Anglican cleric and Christian theologian said, “Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.”

You Had a CHOICE Luke 9:57-62

ark and his father had been to a carnival. They had had lots of fun together.
"My balloon broke! " Mark said. "Can I go back and buy the flag?"
"Here's some money," Mark's father said as they were ready to leave. "Go and buy something from the souvenir stand that will help you remember the fun we had today."
"No," said his father. "You had a choice, and you chose the balloon. Balloons are fun, but they don't last long."
Mark took the money and ran to look at all the souvenirs. First he checked the prices to see which ones he could afford. "I want either this flag or a balloon. Which do you think I should take?" he asked his father.
"But now I'd rather have the flag," said Mark. "I want something for my room." "Let's talk about what happened," his father said. "I didn't pick out a gift for you. I wanted you to learn how to make a choice. I want you to know how to make a decision and stick with it." "But I picked the wrong thing," said Mark.
"You pick whichever one you want," said his father. "I'll take the balloon," said Mark, and he paid the person who ran the souvenir stand. Mark held the balloon in one hand and his father's hand with the other as they walked back to their car. He was very happy. But as he got into the car he pulled the door shut on the balloon. He heard a big bang-and the balloon was gone. All he had was a string and a few little pieces of rubber.
"No, you didn't!" said his father. "A balloon is more fun to play with than a flag. But a flag lasts longer. You were able to choose which one you wanted." "But now I don't have anything," Mark said, "because the balloon broke." "But if you had picked the flag, you might have torn it or lost it," his father said. "Don't feel bad! You had the balloon for a while. You also learned something about making a choice. You'll have to make a lot of choices in your life. I think you'll learn how to make good choices." "OK," said Mark. "Now I choose that we go home fast. I'm hungry!"
Some Questions 1. What decisions do you get to make for yourself? 2. Whom can you ask to help you make a decision? 3. Do you think anyone always makes the right choice?

G ò0 dNews on Money Matters
Basic Financial Principles
T
here’s an old joke about a Christian couple who prayed daily that God would help them win the Mega Millions lottery jackpot, but weeks and months passed, and their big payday never came. Finally, God spoke from Heaven and told them, “If you want My help, the least you can do is buy a lottery ticket!” I’m not suggesting that you play the lottery as the answer to your financial problems—quite the contrary. The point of the joke is clear— we need to be “doing” our part even as we trust God and seek His guidance and aid. I would like to suggest several key principles, simple and concise, that work together to create a solid financial foundation. All of these are biblically based.
Work Hard Seems simple, doesn’t it? Yet so many people seem to have missed the connection between work and prosperity. Good old-fashioned hard work and diligence is indeed a sure-fire, money-making scheme. Look at what God says about this principle: Proverbs 13:4: “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” Proverbs 14:23: “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” Proverbs 12:24: “The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.” Proverbs 6:10: “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber.“ There are many more verses like these, but you get the picture. Ben Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack (1759) was modeled to a great extent on Proverbs, albeit with Ben’s characteristic wit where he made such pronouncements as “God helps those who help themselves” and “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” In other words, the harder August we work, the “luckier” and
10 2013
wealthier we usually become.
TITHE Tithe a tenth of your income to God (usually through your local church where you fellowship and are spiritually nourished). I’ve already discussed tithing in detail in an earlier column, so I won’t say much more about it here. Just remember, if you can’t live on 90% of your income by giving to God the tenth that He so richly deserves and asks of us, then you’re probably in financial turmoil already with no written budget and no idea where your money is going. Malachi 3:8 puts this matter quite pointedly: “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and offerings.” This is God speaking directly to us. If you regularly give to God the tithe (10%), you will be blessed—count on it.
BE A GOOD STEWARD OF YOUR FINANCES. This essentially covers all of the other financial advice I’ve given in earlier columns—live on less than you make; save money for emergencies (rainy day fund); get out of debt as quickly as possible; save up cash for purchases and don’t keep charging credit cards or taking out loans; invest for long-term goals like retirement and kids’ college funds. Remember the Parable of the Talents from the Gospels? The servant who had only one talent (interpret this either literally as a bag of gold or else figuratively as a gift or talent that God blesses you with to use in your career) chose to hide this talent and do nothing with it. So God took it away and gave it to the servant with ten talents who had put his talents to good use in order to prosper. The parable ends with this scripture which, ironically, we rarely hear
By Andrew Lee quoted in church and certainly not in the media because it seems to refute the dominant cultural “entitlement” mentality of sloth and irresponsibility. But here it is for your consideration—in the words of Jesus Himself, Matthew 25:29: “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” These three basic financial principles, when practiced all together as a lifestyle, will ensure prosperity and financial success. But it’s important to do all of them, not just one or two. I know Christians who tithe regularly and give offerings to the poor and to missions, yet they continue to plunge into debt and live without a written budget. Certainly, God rewards them for their giving and faithfulness, but they aren’t realizing the full potential of the blessings and success they could have if they practiced sound financial management (as directed in Proverbs). Then there are those Christians who insist they are “waiting on the Lord” to bless them financially, so they aren’t out looking for a job or taking steps (education, for instance) to improve their career opportunities. These people likewise will never reach their full financial potential because they aren’t following the biblical mandates about work which I summarized above. Finally, there are those who work diligently, save money, and avoid debt, but they are neither tithers nor givers to the poor and needy. This group also will never receive the full benefits God intends for them to have until they do all three of these principles in unison. I encourage you to put my theory to the test by practicing all three of these principles as a lifestyle. If you’re “poor” and you do all three of these, you won’t be poor for long. And if you’re successful but you stop doing all three of these, I would suspect you won’t be successful forever. Try it and see what God has in store for you!

5
foolproof steps to making new friends By Darren Schalk "Stuff I Hate About God: why He doesn't do things my way" will be available nationwide Oct. 1
I like friends. When I was a kid, we moved a few times. My biggest concern when trekking into a new town was always making friends. Making new friends can be scary and even awkward. Follow these 5 steps to avoid making a fool of yourself the next time you try to initiate a nice, new friendship. 1) Find a Candidate Within the “Friendship Square” As a kid I was lazy, so friendship candidates needed to be physically close, usually neighbors or fellow church attenders. I couldn’t drive, and didn’t care to pedal for more than a few hundred yards, so that automatically ruled out everyone outside the Friendship Square. It’s the same as an adult. I’m still lazy nowadays, just in different ways. The Friendship Square was physical then; now it’s more of a social square. We have to cross paths naturally during any given week or you’re out of the Square, and thus, not a potential friend candidate.
2) Initiate the Friend Probe
Once said candidate has been identified, friend probing begins. This is the stage where you probe each other’s personalities searching for likes and dislikes, walking on eggshells trying not to offend, and throwing out feeler-jokes to get a sense of their humor, or lack thereof. During this phase, questions should be asked carefully and thoughtfully. For instance, an appropriate question might be “Where did you get that beautiful vase in your foyer?” An inappropriate question might be “Why do you have pills for syphilis in your medicine cabinet?” For obvious reasons, this stage is both dangerous and awkward.
3) Discuss Others and Play a Game If at some point the awkwardness ends, the friendship can continue to move forward. This is when you start talking about other people who think they’re your friends but really aren’t. When this occurs, the friendship has officially been forged. At some point soon you’ll find yourselves watching movies together and playing either a card or board game while discussing these other “friends.” In this phase, interaction should occur no more than once a week. Any more than that and you may suffocate your newfound friend and inadvertently end the friendship prematurely.
4) Share a Secret
If you do in fact survive the gameplay of phase 3 without a temper tantrum that causes overturned boards and projectile game pieces, you can move on to sharing secrets. This is when you reveal that you secretly like NKOTB and Snow (the rapper, not the weather phenomenon), you never miss an episode of Ice and Coco, and your freezer is filled with little blue smurfs. If your new friend reciprocates with a secret of their own like, “I don’t really have a job, I just dress up and walk around the block from 8-5 everyday,” the friendAugust
12 2013
ship can continue to progress. If, however, your new friend does not reciprocate secret-sharing, said friendship has reached its highest potential and should not be prodded any further. A simple board game every now and then will suffice, and you may feel free talk about this friend in stage 3 of your next friendship.
5) Raid the Fridge
The final phase of friendship is the fridge raiding phase. At this point, all bets are off. You may now show up at your friend’s house unexpected at any time. Middle of the night texts are acceptable and expected. All belongings may be borrowed without notice. And food in the fridge is free game. Mockery and practical jokes that sometimes end in anger are expected and required. Tears can be shed over nothing at all, and if you find yourself offended, an angry, ranting argument can spontaneously occur but must (and will) always end with hugs. The friend is also now free to leave the Friendship Square without threat of ending said friendship. Once this point is reached, new friendships can be forged without offending or threatening your old friend, and said friend may never again be spoken of in phase 3 with future friendship candidates.
A Warning If at any point you attempt to bypass a phase, the friendship will immediately be terminated. For instance, if you blurt out “I love Ice and Coco!” in the Friend Probe phase, you will be shunned. Or, if you try to prematurely interject mockery into the friendship during a card game by yelling “Did your alcoholic mother teach you how to play UNO?” you will also be shunned. While such mockery is acceptable by phase 5, it is completely unacceptable in phase 3. Be sure to keep the phases in their proper order to assure your friendship will achieve its highest potential level.
Conclusion Follow these 5 steps and you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends as the most popular person in your Friendship Square. Your options will be limitless. If played properly, you’ll soon be able to raid every fridge in the neighborhood without question. And isn’t that the whole point of making friends anyway? It is for me. Happy friend hunting.

It’s a New School Year…….Soar to NEW Heights! By Lana Payne
H
ave you ever seen th the commercial i l off th the d dad d jjoyfully f ll strolling the aisle of the office supply store, cheerfully tossing school supplies into his shopping cart while the song plays in the background “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”? I have always related so well with that father and his joy in “back to school” season (after a long summer break!). However, I find that the older my kids get, the less excited I am about back to school time. At the beginning of a new school year, backpacks are full of NEW things – new pencils, new paper, new notebooks, etc. This is a new school year full of new friends, new teachers, new classes and perhaps even new schools. This coming school year is full of “news” for me, as all three of my boys will be entering new schools this year! My oldest will begin high school, my middle son will begin middle school, and my youngest will be starting third grade in a brand new school (prayers appreciated…..and fasting, if you’re so inclined!). As frightening as it is to have my three boys starting new schools this year, the most frightening of all is having my middle son (who is autistic) move from a private school that specializes in working with children on the autism spectrum, to public school AND middle school! This has been the most difficult transition for me to accept. New things can be scary; it’s the fear of the unknown. Such is true in life at times. Whether it’s a new job, a new baby, a new marriage – it can be scary because it involves change. For us women, even something as simple as a new haircut can be scary. I mean that’s a HUGE decision after all! Some people don’t like change at all, even fear it, and others may thrive on change. I tend to lean toward the latter, but there is still a little uneasiness with change because I’m just not sure what to expect. As frightening as a new thing can be, it can also be exciting. Whether you’re a mother, a wife, or a single woman, we can all relate to change. I believe God delights in doing NEW things because we know we will be given a new name (Rev. 2:17) and that He will make a new Heaven and a new earth (Rev. 21:1). So yes, I believe God delights in doing new things. I encourage you this month to

b h t thi G d sends d your way. embrace whatever new things God Think about this – the butterfly. God created and designed this beautiful creature to start out one way, then go through an incredible change to become something brand new! During the changing process, this caterpillar may feel trapped while the change is taking place within the cocoon. Before this, the caterpillar was free to crawl on the ground, coming and going as he pleased. Then when he begins the changing process, his freedom is limited and he may feel trapped in his surroundings. If caterpillars think about such things, he may think, “I was better off on the ground. I may have moved slowly but I had more freedom.” I’m not sure if God allows the caterpillar to instinctively know that soon, he will become a new creature – a brand new creature unlike before because soon he will have wings where he can fly above the ground. He doesn’t have to stay on the ground, but now that he’s a new creature, he can fly! Not only that, but he’s more beautiful than before. When God is doing a new work in us, He sees the final outcome even when we can’t. He tells us, “But forget all that (the mighty things I’ve done in the past) – it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something NEW. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19). We just need to trust that God knows what’s best for us and “those who trust in the Lord will find NEW strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31). As difficult as it is to watch my children grow up and begin new things this fall, God is just growing their wings. He wants them to fly. He wants them to soar. He wants the same for you. Trust Him with the NEW things – you may just wake up one day and realize you have wings!

We Have All Had Those Moments By Lindsey C. Wagner
W
e have all had those moments. The moments where we are so close to losing our sanity that we feel close to the edge. For me, nothing brings those moments out more than when I take my tired and cranky 4 year old out to run errands. While most of the time, he is pretty happy go lucky kid, when these moods hit, though, boy do they ever hit. For example, even grocery shopping for a few small items becomes a chore. In the span of 2 minutes, I get, “I want to push the buggy. Mommy, I want to ride in the buggy. Mommy, but I want to push the buggy”. While sometimes these conversations are fairly easy to redirect, this time wasn’t as easy. The deli cookie was no longer a diversion. He didn’t want a chocolate chip cookie, he wanted a cupcake cookie. To sum it up, he was so tired that he didn’t know what he wanted. All he knew was that whatever it was, he wasn’t getting it. We have all had these moments. I will be the first to admit that I have them. And I would even venture to say that if you find someone who says that they don’t, well, obviously they aren’t being too honest. As humans, we all want things to go our way. When they do, we are happy. But when they don’t, the kicking and screaming wants to come out. Finding the balance between the two can be hard, but it is a word we are all familiar with- compromise. And sometimes even the simplest of compromises can make a world of difference. Sometimes it is hard to put my son’s mood into perspective- he gets a nap and he doesn’t have to deal with the pressures that we do in the “adult” world. But then I remember that, like me and everyone else, he gets tired too. He may not have the same stresses that I do, or even the same worries, but he still has them. And, I try to remind myself that sometimes he can sense the things that I am feeling, as well. 1 Thessalonians 4:1618 states, “Be joyful always; pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Sometimes, taking a step back in every situation offers a moment of clarity. And sometimes, a conversation with God- long or short- is the best answer to any scenario. After a grocery trip that would have normally taken maybe ten minutes, a very tough decision in the soup isle, and my best attempt to make a fussy toddler laugh, I had to stop and ask myself, “Is it really worth getting frustrated, or should I make the best of it and keep my cool?” I stopped, took a deep breath, and decided to pick and choose my battles with my child. I am here to provide love, reassurance, and guidance, among other things, and I want this to be a stage in his life that he looks back and remembers fondly. There are enough things going on in both of our lives that cause stress, and a grocery trip should not be one of them.

G ò0 dNews for your Taste Buds By Deana Thompson
P
aul wrote to the Corinthians that all Christians, no matter their nationality or social status, make up the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). He went on to say that just as our physical bodies are made up of many different parts, so the Body of Christ is made up of many different gifts. We need every part that God has strategically put into our bodies; likewise, we need every gift that God has strategically placed in the Body of Christ. We all look, sound and act differently; but we are all needed to accomplish what God wants done in His kingdom. This Garden Stir-Fry is a little like the Body of Christ. Different colors, shapes, and textures combine with various tastes and smells to make up this dish. Yellow circles contrast with green parallelograms. Bright orange ovals balance out the pale white wedges. The crunch of the carrots differs greatly from the smoothness of the onions or the softness of the squash. And yet all of the vegetables are needed to make this dish very pleasing not only to the eyes but also to the taste. If the yellow summer squash were missing, where would be the splash of yellow? If the zucchini were missing, where would be the triangles? If you were missing from the Body of Christ, where would be the gift that God has given to you to share among His people? You are needed in the Church, just as the ear is needed in the body and the sauce is needed in the stir-fry. Each person contributes something to make the whole exactly what it is supposed to be. Be all that God intended you to be, and do all that God intended you to do. Add your shape, color and texture to His Kingdom!
Garden Stir-Fry 4 servings 1½ tsp. cornstarch 2 Tbsp. cold water 2 Tbsp. soy sauce 1 Tbsp. orange juice 2 tsp. honey Dash pepper 1 c. green beans, 1” bias-sliced 1 Tbsp. cooking oil 1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges ½ c. carrots, thinly bias-sliced 1 c. zucchini, quartered then cut into ¼” slices 1 c. yellow summer squash, cut into ¼” circles Tomato wedges (optional) Note: Other vegetables can also be added to this stir-fry, such as cauliflower or broccoli florets, which would give a new taste, color, texture and shape to the dish. However, you may have to boil them a minute or two first before adding them to the stirfry. Garden Stir-Fry
Definition: To bias-cut vegetables is to take your knife and instead of cutting the vegetable straight down (or perpendicular to it), you cut it at about a 45-degree angle. To add a different texture, you can also use a waffle cutter to cut ridges into your carrots.
1. In a small bowl, stir together the cornstarch and cold water until the cornstarch is dissolved. Stir in the soy sauce, orange juice, honey and pepper. Set aside. 2. In a medium saucepan, cook the green beans, covered in boiling salted water, for 3 minutes. 3. Preheat a wok or a large skillet over high heat; add the cooking oil. Stir-fry the onion and carrots in the hot oil for 2 minutes. Remove from the wok. 4. Add the beans, zucchini and squash to the wok and stir-fry 3-4 minutes or until the vegetables are crisptender. Push the vegetables from the center of the wok. 5. Stir the sauce once more and then pour it into the center of the wok. Cook and stir until thick and bubbly. Return all the vegetables to the wok and stir them into the sauce. Cook and stir 1 minute more. If desired, garnish with tomato wedges.

Jimmy Needham Free Concert Aug. 25th @ 6pm
I
t’s not only artists and pundits who occupy platforms. There’s a performer in everyone. Pining for affirmation, striving to save face, yearning for contentment, covering a blemish. Man’s effort to craft and present his version of the best life will rarely leave him satisfied. Or anyone else impressed. The clutter of his clumsy work produces little more than an inevitable mess and limited space for an intervention that can truly save this performance. The solution? Clear everything from the stage. And get out of the way. – Matt Ingle Reality hit Jimmy Needham pretty hard as he started work on his fifth studio project Clear The Stage. This record could potentially turn out a disaster. Even with iconic producer/songwriter Ed Cash stepping on board to lend his award-winning expertise behind the soundboard, Jimmy’s task at hand was overwhelming at best. “I felt so inadequate going into the studio to make this album,” Jimmy reflects. “Not all of the songs were written yet, I was working with a new producer, and on top of all that, I had just become a father. Nothing has proven to demonstrate my inadequacy like fatherhood and leading a family. I remember praying, ‘If I ever needed grace, God, it’s now.’” That initial prayer resulted in the vulnerable, anthemic lead single to Jimmy’s most personal record to date. “The fact that ‘If I Ever Needed Grace’ came at the eleventh hour, when it seemed like I had nothing—and resulted in one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever written—is such a testament of God’s grace,” Jimmy says. “It was awesome to take steps of faith and lean on God throughout this record, and to see Him come through in big ways over and over again.” Never one to shy away from pouring his heart into lyrics, as past radio hit singles like “Dearly Loved,” “Hurricane,” and “Forgiven & Loved” can attest, Jimmy’s declaration that Clear The Stage is his most personal and honest effort of his seven-year career to date is bold, remarkable, and at least, intriguing. “There’s a nuance I try to capture in every record, but this one was a lot more eclectic, thematically,” Jimmy says. “If there’s a common thread, it’s how all of the facets of my personal life keep leading me to an expanding view of Christ; marriage to my wife Kelly, our daughter’s birth, and the miscarriages we experienced before our daughter’s birth. In all of these things, and in every way I attempt to navigate life, my only satisfaction—the only true answers—will be found in Christ. I’ve come to understand obedience
as more than simply not doing bad things, but running to God to drink deeply in Him so that I don’t want to run to any other source.” Jimmy best encapsulates this revelation on “The Only One,” perhaps the most personal song on the record. In light of coming to grips with God as the ultimate satisfier, he confesses, “All of my lovers are found in my billfold. They rest on my mantel. I can’t get a handle on what satisfies me.” Not unlike most singer-songwriters accustomed to recording their own material, and only their material, Jimmy’s exercise of getting out of the way and opening himself up to song pitches from other writers for the record was a painstaking challenge. Though it did prove to be the right idea. “My ego takes a hit when something’s added to my record that I didn’t contribute to,” Jimmy says. “But when the idea came into my head to include a song written by my buddy Ross King called, ‘Clear The Stage,’ it became so obvious that this song should be included. It needs to be shared with the world. It’s the cornerstone of the record. “The first time I heard this song as a high school student, it shipwrecked me. I don’t think anyone can be the same person after hearing this song. I’ll never forget hearing those words and immediately getting on my face before God. As the final track on the record, it’s a heavy way to close, but my hope is that by the end, every listener will say ‘I want more of Jesus and less of everything else.’” Contrary to most artists, Jimmy’s idea of “stepping out” on this record stylistically meant taking deliberate strides toward a more down-the-middle, mainstream approach, both musically and lyrically. Writing songs with simpler chord structures and accessible lyrical content, while staying true to the integrity of the blue-eyed soulfulness that’s brought him critical acclaim over his career spanning seven years. The finished product amounts to a batch of intently crafted, accessible pop songs, dabbled in a variety of genres from Stevie Wonder-inspired R&B, to Americana, to shades of reggae. “The content musically is as diverse as the content lyrically,” Jimmy adds. “It was important not to alienate my fanbase by going a completely different direction artistically, but I wanted to write in a way that made my music more accessible and easier to embrace, which was a pretty risky decision for me.” Another first for Jimmy while recording Clear The Stage was foregoing session musicians and opting to use his touring band live in the studio. “I wanted to use my own guys and they came in and killed it,” Jimmy exclaims. “We recorded the funkiest, most soulful song I’ve ever put on a record called, ‘I Will Find You’ (featuring rapper Lecrae), and they knocked it out of the park.” Other particularly memorable points on the record include, “My Victory,” a somewhat stylistic departure in the way of a corporate worship song co-written with Cash and Matt Armstrong; “Daddy’s Baby Girl,” a playful tune written for Jimmy’s daughter Lively; and “In the Middle,” a ballad for his wife as encouragement in the wake of a heartbreaking series of miscarriages. “I hope that I’ve changed since the last record, but I know I have,” Jimmy concludes. “I’m more aware of my desperate need for Jesus in everything that I do. In every circumstance that’s thrown my way. The most important takeaway that anyone can get from this record is to see Jesus as so satisfying, that every other pursuit or effort to make our lives better seems dull compared to life in His presence.”

Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
By Melinda Nicodemus o you have decided today is the day!! You are going to lose weight and get healthy! You already have a membership to your local gym that has been going to waste for months or maybe even years like mine had. First week goes by and you are doing awesome! No ice cream after dinner and the water intake has doubled. Weigh in day comes and you are envisioning big weight loss numbers!! You step on to see how much your hard work has paid off and the numbers are the EXACT SAME as day one!! Ok Ok no worries you think to yourself I got this and you start week 2. At the end of your second week you step on the scale again only to see the same stinking number as day one. Week’s 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are the same. No weight loss. Frustrating right? You want to quit and eat cake right? Well this is exactly what happened to me. I have been overweight for 14 years since the birth of my first son and I have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight several times. I have always failed, and that my friend can be hard on the self esteem. In June 2012 I changed my goals so instead of being obsessed with losing weight I wanted to be able to run a 5k with my oldest son. If I lost weight great, but if I didn’t that would be ok because I knew every day I was off the couch was a step in the right direction. As I mentioned previously I went 7 weeks with no weight loss. I worked out at a minimum of 3 days a week and drastically changed my eating habits ( good bye taco bell drive thru- moment of silence for that.....) and I expected the 40 lbs I needed to lose to get to my goal weight would basically slide right off my body. I had been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that damaged my thyroid so I knew it would be harder for me to lose weight than your average gal, but now that I was putting the effort in surely it would work! In those 7 weeks that scale did not move, but I could tell I was getting stronger and that my endurance was increasing. I could also tell that I was in fact getting smaller. June 18, 2013 was my one year anniversary of day 1 of couch to 5 k and my scale is only 16 lbs lighter. If I were on a weight loss show I would have been kicked off a long time ago for that tiny number! August Those shows are great for motivation and tips, but
26 2013
when we compare ourselves to their drastic numbers it can be very discouraging. Many times I have literally cried to God asking him “why can’t I lose this weight!? Why do I have to be the fat twin ( a position no one wants)? Why do I have to work so hard when others are already at their goals in half the time!?? Why is that scale not moving!? “ I know that God does not desire to see us unhappy, or unhealthy, or overweight just as we parents do not desire to see our children hurting. I know he has plans for me and maybe that is to help motivate those who are struggling to lose the weight and it is not falling off of them, or maybe it is for me to take this entire year to really make sure I have my act together and I won’t fall off the “bandwagon” when things get tough. I know the numbers on my scale do not define me. I know I have to earn my body and take it one day at a time. I know I am stronger, healthier, more confident, more able to keep up with my children, adding years to my life, setting good examples for my kids, encouraging others, down 2 pants sizes and 10 inches off my waist and I know that I worked so hard for those 16 lbs!! It did not take a day, week, or probably even a year for your body to get in the shape it is in so it will take some time to get it in the shape you want. If you fail today and give into that cake that is ok just start fresh tomorrow. Don’t beat yourself up on the times you fail. Each day is a new day and just as God forgives us each time we fail we have to forgive ourselves each time as well. If you are deciding to start today then I am already so proud of you and your decision! Be proud of yourself!! You are taking that first step which is always the hardest! Be sure to take measurements and do not weigh yourself everyday! Find friends to help keep you on the right track and ones that will not bring you the cake I mentioned. I read a thing once that said “six months from now will you regret not starting today?” Make today the start of your journey and keep pushing forward. James 1:12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Keys to Living With
this School Year
By Jared Waldrop
L
ife... where are you going with all of this? Some of the best advice I can give you is get with God and get some Godly vision for your life. In the swirl of life, its really easy for school, friends, activities, money making and relationships to cloud our direction... let God give you some corrective lenses through his Word, prayer, and the right people in your life. Get some Godly vision. Vision: The act or power of sensing with the eyes; sight. The act or power of anticipating that which will or may come to be; an experience in which a personage, thing, or event appears vividly or credibly to the mind; a vivid, imaginative conception or anticipation I like this definition from Andy Stanley: Vision: A mental picture of what could be, fueled by a passion that it should be. Key Thought: As you seek to read, pray, journal, and worship throughout this year, God is going to move on your heart and give you vision. Vision gives purpose. Vision is what makes life vibrant. Vision brings focus. Vision is what God gives to believers who set the stage for him to do incredible things through them. Key Scripture: Proverbs 29:18 (NIV) Where there is no revelation (vision), people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction. Vision can (and should) do 2 things in your life: 1. Vision should propel your life FORWARD Make this year a year of moving forward spiritually. Do you have vision in your life? Something that has captivated you, something moving you forward? When you pursue God, you will get Godly vision – it will change everything about your life – how you look at life, how you act, what you say, what you get out of bed for – at the beginning of this new school year, set the stage for what God wants to do in your life with getting in the word, prayer, journaling, worship… and watch vision begin to FLOOD your life! 2. Vision should hold your life BACK When you have Godly vision in your life, it will move your forward the RIGHT way, and it will hold your life back from the WRONG way. Vision will hold you back from these and more… • The wrong friends • The wrong boyfriend • The wrong girlfriend • The wrong entertainment • The wrong way to spend your weekend • The wrong way to spend your money • The wrong choice when its just you by yourself

August 2013
We all need Godly vision to propel our lives forward AND hold our lives back. Here are 5 Keys to Chasing Vision 1. Get Up, Get After It. Psalm 63 – “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You: my soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is…” Mornings are the gateway to your day! Set the tone for it physically and spiritually by getting up, getting your head in the game through prayer, praise and focusing on what’s ahead! 2. Guard Your Heart. Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Why guard you heart? In Jeremiah 17:9 it says “the heart is deceitful beyond all things and with out cure. Who can understand it?” How many times have we said to ourselves “why did I do that?” I don’t understand why I did that, what was I thinking? Our hearts can be deceitful and misleading. Don’t follow your heart. Trust the Lord with your heart. Make Him the Lord of your heart. Let Him hold your heart. Proverbs 3:5-6 says this: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” 3. Fuel Your Vision. Be involved with activities and people that FEED your vision! Iron sharpens iron… Focus on being with the right people, hanging out in the right places, doing the right things... And have FUN. Do what you LOVE. Its so easy to get caught up in the grind of life - take time to do the things that you are passionate about! 4. Flee Vision Killers. • There are people you shouldn’t be with. • There are places you shouldn’t go. • There are situations you shouldn’t get into. • There are choices you need to weigh the consequences before making… Vison-killers are out there. Be heads up! Like is says in 1 Peter 1:13 – Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober… be heads up & be aware. 5. Get to the Root of Issues that Hold You Back. Read about Elijah’s showdown on Mt. Carmel (read 1 Kings 18:1640. Notice at the end of the passage, he kills the prophets devoted to Baal. He gets to the root of the issue. We can have plenty of mountain top experiences, and still be stuck in a cycle of destructive habits, attitudes, sin, etc… Get to the root of any issues in your life – now! Your vision and destiny depend on it.

s we stepped to edge of the South Dakota bottom land field there was an awe and silence among our hunting group. My dear and faithful friend Paul Gable was with me, along with new found friends, Kelly Samson, Morris Anderson and our guide Travis Bowles. We stood overlooking the adventure soon to come before us. I asked before we began if we could pray? Everyone huddled together, hats came off and we bowed our heads,,

As the sun began to rise in the east, I could feel its warmth on the back on myy neck. Gl Glimpse into an Extremely Important Moment in the Life of Jacob Recently Re God penetrated my spirit with a remarkable “flash of revelation” out of a often-read Genesis story. It concerns one isolated yet highly important event in the life of the patriarch Jacob. After many years of thinking that his son, Joseph, was dead, much to his surprise, Jacob und out that his longlost offspring was actually the prime minister of Egypt under Pharaoh. At Joseph’s bidding, Jacob then moved his entire family down to Egypt to settle in the land of Goshen. Soon after that, Joseph took Jacob, his father, to meet Pharaoh—the man who surely wielded the greatest governmental authority and social influence in the world at that time. Jacob at that time was God’s main representative in the world, heaven’s primary “ambassador.” Whether he realized it or not, it was his responsibility to declare the true revelation of God to all those he came in contact with. When he entered Pharaoh’s throne room, that notable ruler asked a simple question: “How old are you?” Jacob’s response is surprising, intriguing and troubling. He said, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” What a missed opportunity! Though Jacob had an open door to share truth with the most notable ruler in the world, as far as we know, he never even mentioned anything about God or his own personal experiences with the Creator of the universe. Instead, he focused completely on the negative—“few and evil have been the days of the years of my life,” he said. “Wait just a minute Jacob! Your days have not been “evil”; quite the contrary, your days have been “exceptionally blessed”—more blessed than anyone else in the world. You are so blessed that you have actually seen the face of God and that same God even changed your name to Israel! He then foretold very powerful things about the future of your seed! Why did you lapse into such negativity?” There are three primary answers to that question: · Failure to overcome disappointments—Maybe Jacob suffered deep depression for many years because of all the failure and loss in his life. He was probably guilt-ridden over lying to his dying father. On top of that, he lost 20 years of relationship with his brother over the same issue and the relationship rift was probably never completely healed. He father-in-law lied to him and he lost seven years of his life working for a wife he never really wanted. Later on, he was
convinced that his favorite son Joseph was killed by a wild beast and probably felt personally responsible since he sent him on the journey to see his brothers. His favorite wife died in childbirth. Quite possibly, those things had become Jacob’s focus instead of the good things God had done in his life. He lived the negativity over and over in his mind until it dominated him. · Failure to see the importance of his life—Apparently Jacob was not really aware of the bigness of his part in the plan of God. He could only see the immediate results of the blessing of God, not the long term results. He could only see twelve sons, and ten of them a disappointment to him (haters of the one he loved) not a multitude like the stars of the sky, as God had promised. Neither was he aware that one day, billions of people would closely inspect his life and his revelation from God to build their own faith. He was just a desert dweller. How could he have world impact like that? Surely he believed, but maybe it was just too far off to seem really relevant. · Failure by comparing himself with those more blessed— Jacob complained to Pharaoh that his days, a mere 130 years on the earth, had been “few.” The problem here was his perspective; he was looking back at those who lived quite hundred years more than him, instead of being able to look forward into our day when it would be a rare blessing to make it to just 100. Because he focused on those who seemed to be better off than him, his own blessings may have appeared less significant. What does this speak to us? It speaks four primary things to us. We need to: (1) Stay focused on the blessings of life and realize that disappointments are always used of God to grow us into purpose—yes, disappointments become divine appointments; (2) Confess often that our lives are not insignificant; we are extremely important to the plan and purpose of God. Even small things done for the Kingdom can have great impact. (3) We should never compare ourselves with those who appear more blessed than us; (4) We should always seize the moment—whenever we are given an opportunity to represent God, do it as if it the most important, heaven-authored event happening on the earth. Then hopefully, we will not “miss our moment” when it passes by.

Developing a Desire for God’s Desires in Our Children By Stacey Wielfaert
“Dear Lord Jesus, Please direct my steps; make the desires of your heart form the desires of my heart.”
F
rom the young age of four, I distinctly remember asking for a bat and ball for my fifth birthday. The day of my fifth birthday party arrived, and the first present I opened was a yellow plastic bat and white plastic ball. My cousins, all boys, and I proceeded to play an intense game of backyard baseball. Of course, Daddy was the pitcher, and I was the star batter. I would like to say that from this seed grew an athletic career in which Daddy was my coach and cheerleader and that I excelled as a runner of bases and catcher of fly balls, and as a result of grueling practice and triumphant success, was propelled into achieving a spot of pride for Dad. Sadly, this did not occur. Soon after attempting to catch REAL baseballs, which are extremely hard when they make contact with even the softest cheek, and watching butterflies and birds instead of waiting patiently for the dense object to knock out my two front teeth in far left field, my baseball/ softball/yard ball endeavors ended. I wasn’t sad about my inability to escape from the game unmarred. I wasn’t even remotely distressed about not having to stand out in the sweltering, hot, humid, and hazy Lower Alabama sun in order to possibly catch a fly ball with my face. I was sad because I thought that Daddy wanted me to play baseball. I was sad because I wasn’t achieving the goals that my hero obviously wanted to develop in my life. However, what I didn’t understand was that this wasn’t my father’s goal for me at all. He had just seen that I expressed an interest, and he allowed me to pursue that interest until my face just couldn’t take another hit. With that in mind, I decided I might be better at something else, something different: I discovered ballet. Ballet was not my mother or daddy’s forte. Kids from our family played sports. We played in trees and mud. We were tough kids who rode bicycles all day long and explored the creek and picked thorny blackberries for snacks. We might in our most artistic moments sing a song or draw a picture, August but we never danced, much less
36 2013
thought about ballet! However, we were not a family with the means for two and three lessons a week, which was where my imagination was headed. We just didn’t have the money or time to dedicate to such a commitment. Because I truly had this unexplainable desire to twirl and sweep and stretch, ballet and creative expression found me. The story did not end with unfulfilled dreams and frustration. Just because my parents could not afford the lessons did not mean that they pushed me to other activi-
ties in the sports arena in order to distract me or get me to choose something more cost efficient. They just allowed me to dance. I checked books out from the library about ballet positions and movement. I danced in the backyard, the front yard, my friends’ houses, my bedroom, and finally, as part of an actual group in high school. The color guard at my high school only danced to classical music, and I was in my element. These were my first official lessons as a dancer, but my dancing did not end in high school. After I was married for three years and
while living in Toronto, I had the amazing opportunity to attend classes at the National Ballet of Canada. One night a week, I was a ballerina. I finally stood at the barre and learned the positions, language, and movement of ballet. When we returned to Cleveland, I had the opportunity to dance in several Christmas productions at church. Now, my girls have expressed serious interest in dance, and we have enrolled them in classes. Due to the increased awareness of the arts, ballet and other artistic outlets are more affordable than when I was a child. We do not do this to push them to a goal or desire that was not fulfilled in my own life. We are following the example of our parents who allowed us to develop interests that come from asking the Lord to develop in us the desire for what He wants. When His desires are our desires, we are fulfilled. When His goals are our goals, we are at peace. These ideas of submitting our will and plans to the Lord is highlighted in Proverbs 16: 1-9. A man may make plans in his heart, but God gives the allowance or refusal to those plans. A man sees his motives as pure, but God knows the parts of our mind that we cannot even begin to understand. Acknowledging these spiritual truths in our own lives and teaching them to our children will develop in them an attitude of humility and excitement as to successes that the Lord brings to them. Looking back over my thirty-seven years, there didn’t have to be a definite plan and schedule on my part in order for God to achieve His purpose in my life. My desire to dance did not come from my parents’ desire for me to be a dancer. They didn’t want me to be anything, really, except whatever and whoever the Lord wanted me to be. Learning to dance was God’s design for me as an expression of loveliness and grace toward Him. This was His purpose. As a parent, we pray God’s blessing on our children, not because we want them to be great baseball players or ballerinas, but we pray because we know that without God, His perfect plan cannot be achieved in their lives.

ach one of us has to engage with people on a daily basis. In business, this dynamic exchange is sometimes called customer service. I am amazed how this simple yet extremely meaningful mode of communicating with the customer has changed (some might say “devolved”). Gone are the days of waiting for the store door bell to ring as the customer enters, and then taking time to learn every customer’s name, their childrens’ names and personal taste. Our “now” culture has become professional at shopping on the internet, and purchasing items from stores that will remember your name only through persistent and often annoying emails. I sometimes find myself buying items directly from China. Please don’t be offended that I am not only buying American; you may not know it, but you aren’t either. Today, you can shop for practically anything online, including senior living. Many people spend countless hours looking at surveys, pictures, and reviews, and think themselves educated customers by the time they take the final step to visit their prized senior living community. While there are many benefits to this internet expedition, I have found that the best experiences in shopping for anything, always begin and end with real people. Recently, a lady visited our community during a weekend, and while the sales associate was busy with another tour, a front line associate in activities proceeded to show this potential resident and her daughter our community. While giving this tour, this associate began to tell her story of how August she felt so loved in this community by its residents
38 2013
and the staff; she told how, though her own parents weren’t around, through her job she has gained an entire group of loved ones. At one point during this tour, a current resident stopped the associate to give her a hug, and when she learned that this visitor could be a potential resident, she began to tell her of the love she felt living at her new home, and she actually began to cry with joy and gratitude. These stories continued to unravel as the tour visited a resident’s apartment, dining room, and the building’s main lobby. Finally, the potential client sat down in the main lobby, and her daughter looked at the associate as her own eyes began to fill with tears. “We have found the right place for our mother,”she exclaimed. “You are all like family, and I know mom will be loved.” The daughter wrote to me the very next day recounting her “customer service“ experience. People love convenience, and they love inexpensive, but I have learned that when it comes to major purchases such as the college my children will attend, the car my family will drive, and the senior living experience I might one day have, I, like many others, still go back to old-fashioned personal interaction. Some call it customer service, others call it hospitality, but call it what you may, people still desire it. The store bell may not ring, but the experience that we have has to “ring a bell” in our hearts. We desire this experience to be intoxicating and moving. And when we are moved, so are our pocket books!
The right choice for carefree senior living

SET FREE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP FULFILLING THE MINISTRY OF JESUS
Rev. James & Leona Kent Luke 3:21-23 - “Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, (22) -- And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice cane from heaven, which said, “Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. (23) -- And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph”. Luke records Jesus was about thirty years of age, To anyone knowing the law; the priest that ministered in the temple began their service at thirty years of age.. So Jesus being in the fulfillment of the great High Priest knew this was the precise time to enter His earthly ministry. He had one more test to go through before he could begin His ministry. Luke 4:1 - “And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, (2) - Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.” Immediately following His conformation as the Son of God, He was led by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. After His successful 40 days of fasting and prayer in the wilderness and victory over the temptations of the devil; his next appearance was at Nazareth. Going to the synagogue on the Sabbath day was a normal routine for Jesus. However; this time it was different. This was the first time Jesus was proclaiming who he was. When the rulers of the synagogue delivered to Jesus the scroll of Isaiah, Jesus deliberately found and read Isaiah 31:1 - “The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tiding unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, August

and the opening of the prison to them that are bound”. (2) -- To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort them that mourn; (3) -- To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called the trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.” Luke 4:21 -- And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” This is the first message Jesus preached. He was saying to all that would hear, “I have come to set mankind free from their bondage and prisons of Spirit, Mind , and Soul”. This is still the ministry of Jesus after two thousands years. This should also be the ministry of the Church. The Church is to continue the ministry of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. St. John 14:12 --”Verily, verily ,I say unto you, He that believeth on me the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works that these shall he do; because I go onto my Father”. This is the reason we have chosen this name for our new outreach in Cleveland, TN. It is our desire to bring hope to those who have been bound by sin in whatever form it may be. Jesus told people in John 8:32 “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free: In verse 36: Jesus said “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”. VISION: TO REACH THE UNREACHED. TO PROCLAIM FREEDON FOR SPIRIT, SOUL AND MIND. MOTTO: BINDING UP THE BROKENHEARTED -- SETTING THE CAPTIVES FREE.

How’s the Real Estate Market? By Markietta Munck
T
he three questions I get asked the most are, “How’s the real estate market? Are Homes selling right now? Can you still get a loan with no money down?” 1. Our local real estate sales are very good. Here are a few facts. We are selling homes in an average of 148 days on the market, the average sale price is $140,000. (This information was gathered from the River Counties Association of Realtors). 2. Are homes selling? Yes!! The market is quickly turning into a seller’s market with inventory running low. Next month I am going to give you tips on what buyers are looking for and how you can help your real estate agent get your home sold in the least amount of days on the market. 3. Can you still get a loan with no money down? Yes!! Banks still have a variety of loans available for buyers with no money down. The most popular loan in our area this year is the Rural Development loan (USDA), followed by the THDA (Tennessee Housing Development Agency) and then the VA (Veteran’s Administration)

loan. If the seller will pay your closing cost these particular loans will allow you to be a home owner with no money out of pocket. Ask your local lender or real estate agent for more information. In my opinion there has never been a better time to buy as now. The interest rates and prices all still at a historical low and sellers are now beginning to price homes at
a fair market value. My opinion is the same for sellers. The loans that are available to buyers are available with no money down or as little as 3.5%. The FHA (Federal Housing Authority) loan is enabling buyers to offer you the fair market price for your home and currently we are experiencing a low inventory of homes to sell. My prayer today is these facts take away your anxiety and fears about the real estate market. “For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear” 2 Timothy 1:7
