Angels Watching Over You
salm 33:6 explains that the host of heaven were created with the “breath” of God’s mouth. Imagine millions of radiant, angelic beings flashing into existence as God breathes His life-essence into the vastness of His celestial universe. What a powerful image! In the Bible, angels fill seven primary roles: worshipers, warriors, watchers, messengers, ministers, protectors, and administrators of God’s affairs in heaven and in earth. They are described as “ministering spirits”—because evidently, their sole purpose is to “minister” to God and His people (Heb. 1:13-14). Angels even “ministered” to the Son of God when He was “tempted by Satan” (Mk. 1:13). We are not told exactly how they helped Him, but if He who was perfect benefited from their ministry, we who are imperfect certainly need their intervention too. We can expect it, for God has given “His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways” (Ps. 91:11) Angels are under God’s authority alone. There is no record of believers commanding angels to do their bidding or attempting to initiate a communication with these heavenly emissaries. Though traditionally depicted with wings, only the highest orders (seraphim and cherubim) are described this way in Scripture (Is. 6:1-2, Ezk. 1:6; 10:1-5). When they manifest in this world, sometimes they appear as celestial beings (like Gabriel when he visited the virgin Mary). At other times, they assume human form (as happened when they rescued Lot and his family from Sodom). In the latter example, they were described as both “angels” and “men” (Gen. 19:15-16). No wonder the Bible urges, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unknowingly” (Heb. 13:2). My wife, Elizabeth, experienced an angelic visitation during one of the most challenging times of her life. During a routine checkup, a tumor was discovered in one of her breasts. The implied prognosis was not good. Returning home, overwhelmed emotionally, she stepped into what she thought was an empty elevator at Memorial Hospital
6 // August 2019
in Chattanooga, Tennessee. When the doors closed, she was quite startled to hear a voice behind her saying, “Honey, you look like you need a hug.” Elizabeth turned to see an older lady with gray hair stacked on her head in the traditional, old-timey church style. She was nicely dressed, with a long red skirt below the knees, a white blouse framed with ruffles at the wrists and neckline, and adorned with a red, shoestring bow. She
stepped over, hugged Elizabeth, and spoke with assurance, “You’re not alone in this and everything’s going to be OK.” A deep peace come over her. The elevator doors opened, she stepped out, then stopped suddenly, thinking, I need to thank her. Much to her surprise, when she turned around, the elevator was empty, as well as the halls on either side. There was nowhere the woman could have gone. That lovely, stately lady simply vanished. We’re convinced it was an angel—and by the way, it been eight years now and Elizabeth is still cancer-free. God has been with her and everything really did turn out “OK.” May God watch over you with His angels in a similar way every day! About The Author

Moving ast summer, I moved from Minnesota to Tennessee. I was overjoyed that I was moving to Tennessee to be closer to family. Nothing could prepare me for how hard moving was going to be, though. When I’m in bed and supposed to be sleeping, I still cry. Remembering every memory, happy and sad, they bring back so many emotions. I miss my friends (even though I have made many great friends here in Tennessee). I also miss everything around me being familiar, like my house and school. I get to keep the best memory with me wherever I go, and it is the memories of my family. At least, that’s what I think. I also have some sad memories of back home, like the time my grandpa passed away and the time my babysitter passed away as well. When life gets hard for me, I always come back to one Bible verse, though. Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This Bible verse hit me a few months ago and has made my move to Tennessee so much better. Who helped me get through these things? That is

easy: God. I also realized that my family is always there too. My family and God make a great team; they help me get through tough things. My move was so much easier knowing I had these two things on my side: God and family!

I haven’t forgotten how tiring it was to be responsible for another human life; all the days of feeding, bathing, clothing, teaching, feeding again, swinging, playing with, singing to, and, yes, feeding yet again; doing anything and everything to fill up the time; and the early mornings and late evenings. I remember those times. I still remember my house never being clean, my mom uniform of t-shirts and blue jeans (yoga pants weren’t around in those days), and my go-to hairstyle being a ponytail. I remember. Time has a way of changing one’s perspective. Some of those early days seemed to last forever, but now, the time with Jonah goes so very fast. This past Saturday, we went to spend the

hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.”
1. Pray about everything—yourself, your family, your church, community, government, and everything else you can think of. You should even pray for the things you need. Sometimes people say, “I don’t feel comfortable praying for things. I only feel like I should pray for other people, or for my relationship with God.” Those things are wonderful; but, you know what, my friend? The Bible says that you must pray for things too! The Word of God is our final authority, and God’s Word says that God is very concerned about everything that matters to you. If He is concerned about birds, flowers, and even knows the very hairs on your head, surely He is concerned about anything that is on your mind today. The Psalmist says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). If you will pray about every part of your life, He will give you the very desires of your heart! God loves you just that much. 2. In the passage above, Jesus clearly said, “Whatsoever

is evident. Here are some stories Rachel shared from staff members who have experienced that very thing over the years at White Wing. “The most memorable moment for me is when a woman came into our store in a wheelchair and we prayed together. She was in a terrible car accident and was told she might never walk again. A few months later, she came back to the store walking on her own with no assistance. Praise the Lord!” –Sherry Renfro

Most of our customers come in happy or they come in to get happy or to help make someone else happy. We offer a service of imprinting Bibles with a name on them. Customers get so excited when they learn we can do that, and upon seeing their Bible, you can see in their face how much more they are going to treasure that Bible. Over and over, we have customers open a devotional book to the specific day it is and then say, ‘This is exactly what I am going through today; this is meant for me.’ We try our best to make sure that everyone who comes in the store leaves with a smile on their face. Lifelong friendships are made in this store between customers and
“It is a joy working at White Wing Bookstore because every day is an adventure as to who God will bring through the door! There are times when someone will walk in and share what they are struggling with, which opens the opportunity to pray with them! At other times, a customer will come in and pray over us! Working at White Wing is more than a job; it is a place to develop friendships with those in our community.” –Vickie Smith “It is rewarding engraving products for people. It brings tears to customers’ eyes when they see something we engrave, such as a baby’s footprints or something in a loved one’s handwriting.” –Sabrina Shriver “I'm thankful to work in a place where I can share my faith and people can openly share theirs as well. I am grateful for Rachel as a manager who cares for the customer
employees, and I am thankful that I get to be a part of it.” – Bookstore Manager Rachel Cartwright White Wing wants to say thank you to the community for 50 years of support. Even though the ways in which we buy products may have changed over the years with the rise of Online marketplaces like Amazon, the Cleveland community has affirmed that there is still place for stores that offer more than just products. When you deal with real live people, what seems to be a simple business transaction can sometimes turn into an answered prayer. White Wing hopes it can serve Cleveland in this way for another 50 years.

Embracing and Appreciating the Seasons of Your Life
od intentionally created us to grow, change, and learn over time, through different seasons—not all at once. Just as the earth experiences spring, then summer, then fall, and finally winter — your own life has its seasons. Embracing and appreciating what each change in season has to offer us is the challenge. Recognizing fall and winter are as contributive to our growth as spring and summer — death and life are inseparable; they support each other. Maybe you’re in A TIME FOR EVERYTHING... a season of transition, grief, conflict, illness, For everything there is a season, unanswered prayers, new and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time challenges, or just trying to die; a time to plant, and a time to get by. Maybe you to pluck up what is planted. can’t imagine how this —ECCLESIASTES 3:1-2 particular season could be a blessing in disguise. Your past mistakes, your heartache, your circumstances, and the tension you feel right now in your season—every bit of it is part of your growing ground. Ask yourself, “Which season am I in?” Whatever season you find yourself in, there’s only one way to do it well: embrace and appreciate the unique gifts it has to offer. Now, embracing your season doesn’t mean you have to love it; it simply means letting it be. Open your heart and your hands to what God has for you. Your season may turn into a time of growth and give your faith deeper roots, if you are willing to dig in right where God has you. When you’re in a hard season, you rely on the Lord more. This leads you to a deeper peace and faith as you seek Him in prayer and in His word. Your faith gets rooted. Your season might surprise you! Fighting your season and grumbling in your heart might make you miss the good things God is trying to get you to see; perhaps new opportunities, new relationships, new paths, or new dreams that are far better than anything you could imagine. Your season may teach you an essential life skill: how to grow what matters. This takes doing something that is counterintuitive to how we usually operate: embracing

Sometimes God is showing us His love more through what feels hard than through what feels easy. Your season may help you come alive! The truth is, We are fearfully, imperfectly, “At the end of life, what really matters is and wonderfully made. not what we bought but what we built; not There have been many what we got but what we shared; not our times of transformation competence but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Like layers of petals that come undone over time to reveal a fruitful center, we are all in a continual state of coming undone. It turns out that coming undone is part of coming alive. finding a new church. When I moved to Cleveland to attend Lee University, finding a church was high on my priority list. I did a quick Google search of local churches, grabbed my Bible and my freshman roommate, and embarked on my church-shopping journey. Boy, was that rough.
1. Don’t expect a replica of your previous church. During my church hunt, I found myself comparing Cleveland churches to my hometown church. We tend to cling to the familiar, but this has pitfalls. When you look for a church mirroring the one you left, you’re robbing yourself of new opportunities. Instead, experiment with different congregation sizes and worship styles. Give the Holy Spirit permission to move you in unexpected ways. 2. Look into the church’s core values. Like the parable of the house built on sand, a church not built on fundamental truth will crumble during hard times. A simple look into the church’s statement of beliefs can verify if the church is rooted in Scripture and aligns with your faith. Remember that every church pew is filled with people who have differing beliefs, but it’s the love of Christ that unifies the body.
My Baptist background didn’t prepare me for the spiritfilled enthusiasm of the many Church of God churches that encompass Cleveland. I walked into Sunday services ready to check the boxes of my “must-haves,” only to be disappointed when they didn’t match up. I became fixated on denominational differences and put churches into my pre-conceived boxes. I floated between churches for two years, offering minimal commitment and never feeling like a true member. Now, going into my senior year, I’ve found a church I feel like I can connect, invest, and grow in. It took
3. Get involved. This simple yet crucial step can make all the difference. Until you buckle down, volunteer, and get involved, nowhere will feel like home. That’s because the church is designed for action. God calls us to gather in prayer, feed the hungry, and help the widows and orphans. To really get the feel of a church, volunteer your time or join a small group. Church shopping is far more complex than getting a new car or house. But, the decision becomes simple when you realize you can’t go wrong. Every facet of the body of Christ is serving one purpose: to glorify God. The “perfect” church may not exist, but our perfect God sure does.
other believers. It’s easy to get caught up in the petty details of service times, commute, and the quality of their coffee.

When we realize we can’t see Him, we go searching for Him.” We were reminded of how much we want the pleasures of life and the freedom to chase our dreams but often have to learn the hard way that it’s more liberating if our Protector is truly the one in control. Since we often try to run ahead, He patiently guides us as we learn dependency, trust, and communication. Our sweet dog was once a stray, and to say she was undisciplined is an understatement. But, many chewed-up loafers and toilet paper parties later, she has learned that she is loved, well-fed, and protected. The physical tether has also become a relational tether. Beautifully Broken
hen you think of beauty, you don‘t usually think of brokenness, but beneath the surface of all brokenness is undiscovered beauty. How do we know? We were once broken—until God uncovered our beauty. We were both misguided teenagers. Misguided by anger, hurt, and confusion created within the walls of what we called home. We both suffered from low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, and we were plagued with many insecurities. As a result of that, we looked for love, affection, and attention in all the wrong places and for that reason, we got all the wrong results.
Making decisions from a place of brokenness caused us to not only involve ourselves in toxic relationships but also—If you want to know the truth—become toxic. With no godly guidance, we were a danger to those around us, but mostly to ourselves. One of us grew up in a home where conversations about God were nonexistent, while the other grew up in a home where God was just a word, church was just a place, and a true relationship with God was nonexistent. It’s no wonder we ended up in the situations we found ourselves in; it’s no wonder we had become who we once were. No one had ever shown us the love of Christ or introduced us to Him. We would later both find paths to Christ by different means, but the result was the same. We became believers,

washed by the blood of Jesus Christ and made new. Our lives were forever changed. People look at us today and think that we’ve always been this way, but the truth is we don’t look like what we’ve been through. We were once both broken people, just like some of you: broken by situations and circumstances that were beyond our control, let down by the people in our lives who were supposed to nurture us, care for us, and point us in the right direction. What people see now is only the afterglow of an amazing encounter with God. That is why we can both say with confidence that God is truly more powerful than anything you may encounter or go through. We can say with confidence that God has a purpose for each and every one of you and a plan for your life no matter what it looks like now. Our purpose and God’s plan were birthed from our brokenness: a mentoring program for girls just like us, from all walks of life and all types of backgrounds, but with one thing in common—brokenness. Brokenness can be the result of many things, including a loved one passing, divorce, bullying, or abuse. No one is exempt from it as we will all experience it in one way or another throughout our lives. But, just as we all are subject to pain, we all have access to victory through Christ. We have both often wondered, what if someone had told us about Jesus earlier? What a difference it would have made in our lives. So, we set out to do just that: tell the youth about Jesus and how He became everything in our lives that was missing. We want you to know that Christ is a mother to the motherless and a father to the fatherless. He is a faithful friend and companion. He is everything you’ve searched for and were not able to find around you. He is a bright light in the darkness we sometimes find ourselves in. If you have ever been broken by anything, Christ is the only one who can bind up your wounds as His Word says: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). Life has called us broken, but God calls us beautiful: beautifully broken. About The Author

Jesus Was Sinless esus was sinless. The Bible does not record that Jesus was ever sick, although He became tired from his long hours of ministry to the multitudes and 24/7 pastoring of His disciples. How did Jesus remain sinless and perfectly healthy? The answer is that Jesus had nothing in Him that belonged to the enemy (Satan). Jesus explained to His disciples that the enemy was coming, but he (Satan) had nothing in Him (John 14:30). Jesus prayed to the Father on behalf of His disciples and believers. Jesus was interceding for His friends and asking
God to protect and strengthen them from the temptations of the enemy. Jesus toiled in the Garden of Gethsemane until His sweat was like great drops of blood (Luke 22:44). He wanted His friends to pray and intercede with Him and for Him. Jesus knew the cruel death on the cross was just ahead. He asked Father God to “let this cup pass” from Him (not once, but twice) if it were possible but surrendered His will to the will of His Father (Matthew 26:39, 42). The disciples were tired from many long days of ministry and could not stay awake. They could not, would not, or simply did not pray. Jesus was left alone, shouldering the past, present, and future burdens of the world. Was Jesus praying for the strength to keep any alliance with the enemy’s temptation out of Him? If Jesus sinned at this crucial moment, He would no longer be qualified as the sinless Savior of the world. Instead, Jesus prayed more

earnestly for the strength to defeat Satan’s temptations. What would have allowed Satan to get something in Jesus? If Jesus had spoken words of pity, condemnation, blamed someone else, criticized, got jealous, gossiped, accused God, or cursed God—just once—He would not have been the perfect sacrifice. Let’s look at ourselves. We are not perfect. We allow Satan to have things in us through what we think, what we say, what we see, and the way we act. How do we get what is in us out of us? The answer is forgiveness (of others and ourselves), repentance, and turning away from our sinful ways. Consider the power of our words. They have the power to destroy or build up. Proverbs 18:21 says that the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. In other words, if we speak the wrong words, we will suffer the consequences. What consequences? Jesus said, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37). “Justified” and “condemned” sound like court case legal terms. Could it be that Satan goes to and fro, up and down (Job 1:7, 2:2), listening for us to speak words that He can use against us in the courts of Heaven? Surely Satan does not have access to God in Heaven. He did in the days of Job, and he does now! Satan is continually accusing the brethren before the throne of God (Revelation 12:10). If we acknowledge our participation with our sins (“Agree with your adversary quickly,” Matthew 5:25) and bring the sins of our forefathers to God in repentance (Deuteronomy 5:9), then Satan loses! The generational sicknesses (what “runs” in the family) and curses brought about by not honoring God are stopped! Jesus is our Advocate and our Attorney in the courtroom. Father God is our judge who proclaims, “Not guilty! My repentant child is covered by the blood of Jesus!” The books are blotted out and the new record is recorded. About The Author
