BUILD THE HOUSE by Pastor Jamie Tuttle
I
recently read in a personal devotion taken from Psalm 12:1,
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus teaches us the importance of

looks bleak.” When I read his statement, my spiritual heart skipped a beat, realizing the truth and reality that the condition of our culture is currently on a collision course. Its obvious to see that the stabilizers of our culture are crumbling; burdens are heavy, values are waning, epidemics are growing, and people are looking for any way out. I feel there is a key component that is the root of this cultural dysfunction; it’s rooted in the unstable house. In Psalm 127:1, Solomon, the great wisdom writer states, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” This scripture, along with many others, is the foundational guideline to the only way ‘life will ever work’. The successful life principle here is, if God and His statutes are not the foundation within our Nation, the Church, and Family, then true success will never come; the

We live in a fatherless society; not necessarily by choice, but rather, as a result of our own selfish decisions made in the past 50 years. Many of our values as a nation have been shelved, or even abolished by a forceful opinion that says, “We
we choose to move away from God’s order on how to build; families fail, relationships crumble, daily life hurts, and we end up breeding dysfunction. However, I have fantastic news. As Fathers, Mothers, and

we will successfully build a strong house with Him on our side.
What do we do? We can only change by changing the example we lead by. Fathers must be real fathers, and Mothers must be true mothers of the Faith; in the sense of both blood parents in the home, as well as Pastors, Youth Pastors, Mentors and etc, being responsible to those God has placed in our lives.
We can lead our families in righteous living, with pure values, being God’s Church for the assignment. When Righteous Leaders lead, people follow with great conviction and confidence. Know this, if we’re not building our families, then we’re not building anything worth keeping. BUILD THE HOUSE!

What You Can and Can’t Do
I
by Selena Vina
remember finding myself in many moments throughout my time in school thinking, “I can’t change the world”. Everyone around me had the desire to be a doctor, a business owner, an NFL player, and the list goes on. But I wanted to turn the world upside down. I just didn’t know how or if I even could!
girl in one of my classes who seemed to be the one who everyone tried to avoid. She wore all black every day and was classified as the ‘emo’ kid of our class. This never fazed me about her, though. I continued to talk to her and be her friend because in my eyes she was just as much human as I was. She just did life a little different! One day this girl came into class and something about her was off that day, I could feel it. She seemed broken beyond repair and it bothered me greatly. I wrote her a note filled with as much positivity and love as I knew how to express on a piece of paper. Letting her know that she isn’t alone and that she was loved more than she knew. I would later find out that the day that I gave her this note was the day that she had committed in her heart to go home and commit suicide that evening. She told me that had it not been for me, she would have gone through with it that day. Wow! My one act of love and kindness did that? It changed everything for this one person? It’s been seven years since this time took place in my life. Seven years later and that same girl still messages me every year to remind me that I helped change her world. She now lives a happy life with her two beautiful children!
School continued and the older we all got, the more I found myself feeling completely irrelevant and out of place until one day something changed. There was a

I chose to keep this desire to myself, believing that my dreams were too big to attain. I watched as everyone else around me began working towards their goals with absolute passion. However, here I was trying to find something different to pursue. Something a little more ‘normal’.
I learned then that my desire to change the world wasn’t so far off, after all. That I can change the world by being intentional and loving the person in front of me! I didn’t have to change my dreams just because I didn’t know how to achieve them. I was already doing it! What area in your life have you convinced yourself that you can’t do? I want to challenge that! I want to encourage you and let you know you can! Eliminate ‘can’t’ from your vocabulary and discover the endless dreams you can achieve from there!

Become a Millionaire? Connect the Dots MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.
T
hink about football teams that have won the Super bowl—how did it happen? If you asked the players, they wouldn’t simply describe that one big game. They might describe off-season workouts during spring and summer, pre-season planning and countless meetings, studying plays and video tape, months of deliberate nutritional dieting and conditioning. All of that culminated with a Super Bowl championship. To understand how the goal was reached, you must connect all of the dots along the way. It’s the same with understanding how most millionaires became millionaires. Only a tiny percentage of millionaires gained their wealth overnight through a lottery ticket or inheritance windfall. On the contrary, the vast majority of millionaires in America today reached that status through a long process of deliberate choices daily, weekly, and monthly. As I’ve stated in previous columns, a “millionaire” isn’t somebody who earns a million dollars per year. Rather, it’s someone who has a net worth of at least one million dollars once their debts (liabilities) are subtracted. They are “worth” at least one million dollars. Let me tell you about a millionaire couple I know. This couple in their 40’s considers themselves very ordinary and even “middle class.” One is a teacher; the other is a mid-level manager. When they married, this couple was nearly broke. As newlyweds, they earned a combined annual net income of less than $26,000. But they immediately committed to a few simple principles as newlyweds: faithfully tithing ten percent of their income, saving a tenth of their income into their retirement accounts (401k, IRAs), and avoiding consumer debt like car payments and credit cards. This meant that they couldn’t always join their friends at fancy dinners or fancy vacations, although they
10 // April 2018
enjoyed these activities from time to time as their incomes grew over the years. They saved up to buy cars with cash, and these were always used cars, never new. They used debit cards instead of credit cards, and they used cash whenever possible for purchases. Furthermore, they chose a 15-year fixed rate mortgage for their home, even when they moved into larger, nicer homes twice over the years. Consequently, they quickly built equity in their homes, and their current home is nearly paid off at this point. All along the way, this couple saw themselves as “middle class.” They didn’t grow up in a wealthy household, and they aren’t flashy in their clothes or vehicles. No one would ever guess that today this couple is worth over one million dollars. Their journey to millionaire status in their 40’s was, in retrospect, very boring, very quiet, and almost inevitable. Yes, that’s the good news—people who make these same choices to live on less than they make, invest at least a tenth of their income in tax-deferred retirement plans (preferably the stock market which offers the greatest potential return), avoid debt as a general rule, and faithfully tithe to the Lord—becoming a millionaire is practically inevitable! If you connect these dots, millionaire status is the destination at the end of this journey. One more point, and a quick “reality check.” Did becoming millionaires change this couple in any way? Not at all. Their million dollars is in a combination of their retirement accounts and the equity in their properties. They don’t have a million dollars cash in an accessible account. They can’t suddenly buy a yacht or cruise around the world. But they will retire comfortably and likely be able to leave their children and grandchildren a sizable financial legacy. It didn’t just happen—step by step, choice by choice, they planned it. Now it’s your turn.

I have been shaken by storms as they have come through my life. I have let the storms get me down and wash all hope away. When the weather changes as the storm approaches I have panicked and forgotten about the climate of my life. Our relationship with God creates our climate, but sometimes we create turmoil or God feels that we need some character development. As I reflect, I have realized that I did not prepare or seek God as my refuge. I have also weathered some storms and have helped others endure a storm. In these times, my spiritual development was at a peak and I was anchored in God’s word. The culmination has created my climate. Climate is the long term average temperature, average precipitation, and average weather conditions of a certain area. Sometimes the weather gets abnormal or sometimes

Authoritarian Parenting This style is demanding and punitive, exhibiting little warmth. Parents assume more of a dictatorship holding their children to difficult, high standards. Punishments do not match the crime, parents do not explain themselves or why rules are in effect, and are not concerned with being role models. Parents are rigid and so are their rules and expectations. Children who are brought up with these parents experience extreme control issues, do not develop a sense of discipline or an inner morality, are not very verbal, and are often unhappy, fearful, anxious, fail to initiate activity, and have weak communication skills. Should they need to ask for guidance during a sensitive experience, they would not feel comfortable consulting with their parents.
Authoritative Parenting These parents set high goals and they are active role models. It is a nurturing and warm style of parenting. Children who are reared with these parents are blessed and become cheerful, self-controlled and self-reliant, and achievement-oriented. They maintain friendships with
little motivation, and have external moral codes (Egeland & Farber, 1984). They are however highly social and usually have good self-esteems.
Uninvolved Parenting Parents who embody this parenting style are
peers, cooperate with adults, and cope well with stress.

They are affirmative but do not hold their child to take responsibility for their conduct. In fact, the parent excuses their child’s impulses, aggressions, and sexual conduct. This is due to their inability to say the word “no”. There are vague boundaries or guidelines set for the child

However, the parent is concerned more about their own conveniences, comfort, entertainment, and concerns. Children occupy themselves. They are demanding since they learn they must be to get their parent’s attention. They have low social skills, expect to get their way, and are aggressive, non-compliant. Listening with Your Heart and Healing with Your Smile young woman, Sarah, walks into the doctor’s office, pain on her face and fighting back the tears in her eyes. The nurse kindly smiles, touches her hand and asks her the question, “On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the worst pain ever, how would you rate your pain?” Sarah is no longer able to hold back the tears and responds, “This headache is horrible, at least an 8 or 9.”
The nurse places a gentle hand on her shoulder and says a silent prayer. Compassion, concern, and love in the nurse’s heart is evident in her touch, her expression, and her tone of voice. They finish the necessary questions and the nurse suggests that Sarah lie down and close her eyes for a few minutes while she waits for the doctor to come see her. As the doctor glances over Sarah’s chart and enters the room, the Holy Spirit quickens the doctor’s heart with the love of a father. He smiles and offers Sarah a hand to help her sit up on the exam table, asking her “Sarah, what brings you in to see me today?” She responds that she has been having bad headaches. The

doctor again asks the question, “On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the worst pain ever, how would you rate your pain now?” Sarah responds, “About 6 or 7. It feels a little better.” The doctor asks, “Sarah, can you tell me how your headache started today?” He listens attentively as she tells him briefly about the crazy morning that she was having before the headache started, with the husband, the kids, the car and the job! The doctor kindly reminds Sarah that even though she is caring for others, it is important for her to take a few minutes to relax and take care of herself, too. The doctor hands Sarah two prescriptions. The first is for a medication that will reduce the pain of the headaches and the second reads, “Take 15 minutes of relaxing quiet time twice a day as needed for Sarah“. She smiled and the nurse once again asked the question, “Sarah, on a scale of one to ten, how would you rate you pain now?” “About 2 or 3.” She’d had no pain medicine! The prescription had not yet been filled! The love of God shining through a warm touch, a caring smile, and a listening heart had eased her pain! Transformed her tears to a smile! Jesus asked those that he healed, “What would you have me do for you?” (Luke 18:41 NIV). Jesus listened with compassion. Jesus healed with touch and kind, encouraging words. Jesus stated, “These signs shall follow them that believe, In my name, they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. “ As you encounter hurting people in your life today, take time to reduce their pain by listening with your heart and healing with your smile. Great gym to get it done. And not all hype like the other 24h gyms. Has what I need and love the monthly no contract price. I don’t feel bad if I missed a few weeks. Unlike my other overpriced gym. Staff is friendly and helps me if I notice anything that needs attention. Like a family gym where your suggestions matter. — P. Shevchuk I think this place is great. Plenty of equipment and everything is clean. I am scared when the secret gets out about this place because right now I have not observed it to be busy at all. I use this gym on the weekend and then go to another gym closer to my house during the week so I don’t see a lot of staff. The staff I have come in contact with have been really nice and helpful. Their trainers seem to be knowledgeable and they have a large variety of classes. Not that I would ever workout at 3 AM but it is nice to know I have the option so I also appreciate the 24/7 access. Keep up the great work. — Matt C.

Gò0dNews for Teens
Awaken the Misfits eing a teenager is difficult. Teenagers have no filter and let it all out. They tear each other down and praise anything that has a screen. I had a hard time by making other things bigger than God. I focused on what people say. I cared about what people thought. I got so consumed in the world and what it viewed me as, and totally shut out what God said I was. As I let the world consume and then mold me. I would listen to what other people called me. I tried to fit in to stop of the negativity that was being shot at me, but it just made it worse. I would go home and tear myself down. I forgot the promise and the word of the Lord. It felt like years of torment. I felt alone. I had no father figure in my life and felt abandoned. I knew the Lord was with me, but I just picked up my chains and kept moving. I would try to fill the void that was missing inside of me. "That’s what's missing from me that is making me different!" I said to myself. On a quest I tried to find new friends and even tried finding a boyfriend to fill my empty soul. It felt like I tried everything but nothing worked. I gained friends, but then lost them because there was still something about me that was "odd". Then almost went through with a relationship with a guy but got turned down because I was so different. I became angry with God and asked him why he made me so different. Why me out of a million other people! Why did you curse me with such a strong dislike from the world? Why am I so different from every man on this Earth? Every man looked at me with disrespect it felt like. Struggling with all this confusion I went to a conference called “Men's Ramp.” I went with a small group of guys. While we were there I felt out of place, like I wasn’t meant to be there. I compared myself to

every man in there and titled myself. I knew I could never be "manly" out of all those guys after God. Then one moment later a man came over to me and spoke over me what God was telling him. He told me that
God was describing me to the man. He told me "Stop comparing yourself to all these men. I have called you to stand out among every man here. No matter what you think. You are the manliest man here. You will reach other people that these men cannot! You will lead a Movement of Misfits." If you’re reading this and you think you stick out too much to be called by God, stop there. You are unique. Don’t let anyone or yourself tell you that you are not. The Lord has called you to do so much! Maybe he also called you to awaken a generation of misfits! About The Author

FEATURED COVER STORY
Annual Fundraising Banquet to Help Raise Camp Scholarships for FCA “Inspiration and Perspiration.”
T
here’s nothing like the forge of friendship that brings individuals into a unified commonality in Christ, and there’s nothing better than when this happens during a week of FCA Camp. FCA Camp breaks down barriers of self and builds unity when individuals experience challenges beyond their own bearing to fortify as one. What makes FCA Camp so desirable? There is plenty of “inspiration and perspiration,” but beyond that, there’s a sense of belonging, of being grafted to something greater than oneself. It is a collaborative journey that enriches the soul far deeper than just a day or two of individual training—a journey where individuals unite as one to compete together and give glory to God as a unified body of Christ. There are six types of camps—Sports Camp, Leadership Camp, Coaches Camp, Power Camp, Team Camp, and Partnership Camp. This past summer’s camp theme ONE encouraged coaches and athletes to develop athletic/coaching skills, create lasting and influential relationships, and to fulfill the the prayer of Jesus offered in John 17 “…to become ONE!” The Ocoee Region FCA sent an unprecedented number of student athletes from around the region to attend the FCA

ONE Camp. There were scores of student athletes growing in their faith and making decisions for Jesus. Here’s a brief victory story of the 2017 camps:
FCA High School Football Camp
They just kept coming; one after the other responded to the altar invitation and they filled the hallway upstairs as scores of athletes surrendered their lives to Jesus. The McMinn County Cherokee Coaches were praying that the lives of their players would be dramatically impacted, and they were not disappointed with scores of their players placing their trust in Jesus. McMinn's very own, Martin Pierce, rose above the crowd and was crowned as the best lineman at camp. To say the least, McMinn County High School's first FCA camp was a success on the field and inside their hearts.
Middle School Football Camp
Lake Forrest Middle School went to a one day FCA Middle School Football camp and came runner up on the "7 on 7" Middle School Passing Camp. They also heard a transforming message from former NFL player, Shane
Bonham. Bonham spoke on the topic, "Don't Let Football Be a Trap". He then went on to speak about how when we become the focus, football turns into idolatry. Bonham concluded the message by stating that we can escape the trap of idolatry by playing only for His glory.
Cheer Camp
The Bradley Central High School Cheerleading squad was able to be a part of the FCA Cheer Camp in Knoxville this year. The cheerleaders were able to grow in their faith as well as learn many new skills in tumbling, stunting, dance, and cheer. Coach Breanna Geren said, "The camp was fantastic like always. The girls, always go in with goals for the team that have to do with cheer and their spiritual growth.” Freshman, Savannah Randolph stated, "This was my first time attending an FCA camp. I had a lot of fun and my team got so much closer. I personally had sort of a weak relationship with the Lord, and this camp definitely opened my eyes to having a true relationship with God. I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to go to this camp and grow stronger in my relationship with God."
middle and high school students nestled right here in the Ocoee Region at Ocoee Ridge Camp. It will be filled with all kinds of adventure including: whitewater rafting, mountain biking, hiking, high and low ropes course, wave pools, fly fishing, skeet shooting, and much more. It is a challenge by choice camp and they get to choose their activities. There are Early Bird prices and camp scholarships available, so sign up now at ocoeefca.org. The summer of 2018 theme is Strong (fcacamps.org). The camp will focus on 2 Timothy 4:7 which says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.” Athletes are conditioned to be strong both physically and mentally. The measure of great athletes shows how much faster, stronger, and smarter they are than the opponent. But as Christian competitors, we have the gamechanging advantage of being spiritually strong. We serve a strong God, and we are called to be like Him in every area of our lives. God calls us to be solid in our faith, to fight the good fight with perseverance, and surround ourselves with a firm support system in order to finish strong. With Jesus Christ and His Word transforming us daily, we can be strong 24/7!
Help Us Send Kids to Camp
Competitor's Camp
FCA Competitor's Camp 2017 was truly one to remember; the student athletes learned what it meant to have One Passion, One Pain, One Power, and One Purpose. UTC Coach Heath Eslinger brought a powerful message every night at Evening Encounter leading hundreds of student athletes to salvation. During the day time, the students were involved in huddles, breakout groups, Ijams Navitat, competitions, and more.

Living Single
wonder at times why singles often try to hide that fact that they are single, saved, and satisfied in God while being about their Father’s business. When we speak the truth about who we are in God, and who he is in our lives, we give our singleness a voice that says God is mine and I am his, therefore I’m never alone in him. I know we, as single ladies and men, have often asked ourselves, “What if I don’t think I have the “gift” of singleness?” We know Paul spoke of singleness as a gift in 1 Corinthians 7: 8-9. When we are reading Paul’s words, we must see that he isn’t speaking of some people being contentedly single; he’s speaking of the state of being single. Paul is saying, “Look, if you are single consider it a gift from God, just as marriage will be a gift from God when your time comes.” We should receive our situation in life, whether it is singleness or marriage, as a gift of God’s grace to us. The Bible says “An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is
36 // April 2018
concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife—and his interests are divided” (1 Cor. 7:32-34). I think people feel that if you’re single you can’t be happy and if you’re happy you can’t be single, but don’t get sucked into that madness of what people believe. They don’t define anything about your life, so just keep living. God called you by name; he didn’t call you because of singleness. Look beyond the skin you’re in, and focused on what matters within you: your heart, mind, body and soul. Today there’s so many people letting go of who they are. Relationships are important, but we should never let go of who and what we are, due to singleness and feeling alone. Live your life and know God has not forgotten you; he knows, he sees, and he hears. I love relationships, desire and enjoy them as much as the next person, but not at the cost of my hopes, dreams, and life. Love is an action word, we often attach to relationships, forgetting that 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love, and the greatest relationship we can have. While we embrace the love that God has given us, we also can learn how to embrace and love ourselves. It’s not a crime to fall in love with you, it’s not a crime to put you first, it’s not a crime to embrace singleness, nor is it a crime to enjoy your single life. Learning to love yourself unconditionally can be hard but it’s worth it. When we find out who we are in God, we will begin to walk in his purpose for our lives. Finding God means you find yourself. When you love God, you can begin to love yourself. Your focus and thoughts begin to shift to things that are good; you realize that although you may be single now, God is preparing his best for you. Single is just a word, it’s not a person and it’s not you. You’re more than who you think you are, and more than what others may see.

To prevent the formation of SVT and DVT, there are certain
precautions patients can take. If you have varicose veins, it is crucial to consult with a physician who specializes in vein disease for review and options. Other proactive measures include wearing medical-grade compression stockings, staying physically active, and maintaining adequate hydration. The use of compression stockings and low grade blood thinners during surgical procedures has proven beneficial to decreasing SVT and DVT in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia.
Risk Factors
Certain factors can contribute to the risk of developing
SVT and DVT, such as varicose veins, surgery [especially orthopedic surgery of the lower extremities], prolonged bed rest, malignancy, and injury can all increase the likelihood of SVT cause pain and discomfort, but are usually not life threatening. DVT can be life threatening. DVTs are blood clots occurring in the deep veins, most common in the pelvis and lower extremities. Due to the location and size of the thrombus, a DVT clot can potentially break loose and travel to the lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism (PE). SVTs can be treated to decrease associated pain and progression of thrombus into the deeper veins. Suspicion of DVT requires immediate medical attention. In fact, each year, an estimated 200,000 people die from PE as a result of the detached

Don't let untreated varicose veins progress into a lifethreatening condition. With today's advancing technology, patients with vein disease have many options. Minimally invasive vein treatments like Radiofrequency vein closure (VNUS) and endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), Clarivein, and Vennaseal have almost eliminated the need for more invasive procedures such as painful vein striping surgery. fter a fast last year that consisted of vegetables I started to go into the direction of a plant based diet. After research I found that plants give humans enzymes to digest themselves but also to digest meat your body actually has to divert pancreatic cells from fighting cancer to digest the meat. I was fascinated by this information because humans were basically created to be vegetarians at one time. The more plant based my diet became the better I felt. While my husband is not a vegetarian, I created this recipe and it has become one of his favorites. In any case, a mostly plant based diet is important for everyone; so here is my recipe. It could used as a “Meatless Monday” idea or as a jumping off point for a new foray into a plant based diet.
Ingredients 1 small Butternut Squash (1 - 2 lbs) (peeled, cored and diced) 1 medium onion sliced thinly 1 can black beans 1 jar tomatillo salsa 1 container of chive cream cheese or (almond milk Kite hill chive cheese) 1 package wheat tortillas (8 tortillas) 2 cloves garlic (chopped or put thru a garlic press) 4 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil On a sheet pan combine the diced Butternut squash and sliced onion. Drizzle Olive Oil over it and mix up so the Olive Oil is coating all the ingredients. Add a pinch of salt and pepper all over and roast in

a 400 degree oven for 25 minutes until the onions are slightly caramelized and the butternut squash is cooked through. While the butternut squash is cooking, drain and rinse the black beans. Then coat the bottom of a saucepan with olive oil and two to three (I love garlic) garlic cloves and cook on medium for a couple of minutes. Add the beans and cook them until the get soft and start to break down. Then, with a potato masher, mash the beans until they are creamy and smooth. If they seem a little dry add a little splash of broth, but you want them to be the consistency of refried beans (paste consistency). Once the butternut squash is done, it’s time to assemble. In a 9x12 baking dish assemble the enchiladas. First smear about a tablespoon of the cream cheese or almond milk Kite Hill cheese (both are delicious). Then spread a portion of the black beans and the butternut squash and onion mixture. Roll and place seam side down in the baking dish. Top the dish with the Tomatillo Salsa and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes. You are only looking to heat everything together so it’s melted and delicious. About The Author
