o you have a friend who can draw really well? Or maybe one who makes straight A’s on their report card? How about that friend who is always picked first in gym class because they are so naturally athletic? Maybe you’ve wished that you could do something as well as your friend. But did you know that there is something that your friends wish they could do as well as you? Maybe it’s singing. Maybe you are funny! Maybe you are naturally helpful or you get along with people much younger or older than you. Or maybe you are a computer whiz and adults ask you to help out with technical difficulties. There is something that you excel at! If you’re not really sure what it is, ask someone who knows you well! They can tell you several things that you do really well or that just seem to come naturally to you! And that’s because it is natural to you. When GOD created you, He made you for a purpose! Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” You can be sure that God gave you that ability or talent that makes you special and unique. But did you know that God put those gifts in you before you were even born?! Psalms 139:13-16 says,
“For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.” You don’t need to feel bad or be jealous because someone can do something better than you, because you were given your unique gifts to fulfill God’s exact purpose for you! Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’.” There may be things you would like to learn or improve on in life, and that’s great! But those things that do come easily to you and you know you are pretty good at are gifts from God Himself to you, to be used for His glory. Remember that the next time you wish you could be more like somebody else or you wonder why you aren’t good at something. Ask God today to help you see the unique gifts He gave you and to use them to be all that He created, fashioned, and planned for you to be!

Gò0dNews for Men
On Christian Men Living in Community
ome months ago, a couple, who are friends with my wife and I, approached us. They were having trouble in their marriage. Specifically, the trouble stemmed from his use of pornography. In one study from 2007 that focused exclusively on Christian college men, compulsive and addictive sexual behavior marked one of the major behavioral traits. Why? Men just weren’t getting enough information from church leaders on how to think as a Christian about sexuality. There’s no one who doubts that integrity is important. In a world where the social fabric seems to be coming undone, integrity quickly becomes the first casualty. Relationships, as I shared with our friends that day, are built upon trust. Trust relies on honesty. And integrity is the foundation out of which honesty grows and matures. Among other definitions, Webster describes integrity as “soundness of moral character”. Integrity is the basic element of Christian character. It is the first characteristic of those welcomed into God’s presence (Psalm 15.2). It’s also the first characteristic of a Christian leader. It’s not set by reputation
or circumstances, and it certainly isn’t based on credentials. But here’s the thing, that spiritually healthy level of integrity is not accomplished alone, and certainly not in competition with others. I think this is why Christian integrity is so difficult for men in our culture. It grinds against everything we have been taught about masculinity. Learning the consistency that creates Christian integrity happens in the context of the church, in the context of Christian accountability and mutual interdependence. The good news is you don’t have to go it alone! In fact, I think it’s the sin of pride to give it a try. The New Testament describes Christian community as interdependent. Interdependence involves mutual
12 // March 2018
encouragement and intimacy. Interdependent Christian community also includes a commitment to holiness. Though our culture affirms some of the positive benefits of community, it often balks at the uniquely Christian commitment to holiness in community. It’s no surprise, then, that many churches seem to endorse a very private pursuit of holiness. Yet the New Testament presents a community in which the members have a mutual responsibility to one another in their pursuit of holiness. The members of local churches, especially the men, need to help each other grow in godliness. In most cases, I think it comes down to such a poor spiritual diet. Most men live on a spiritual diet of Doritos and Mountain Dew, maybe four dozen sermons a year, sprinkled with a few Sunday School lessons and maybe Wednesday night Bible study. It’s enough to fill you, but it certainly isn’t nutritious. We understand that many Christian activities must occur in a corporate, or group, setting. So why do we seldom understand our growth toward Christlikeness, our sanctification, as a communal endeavor? Men then often mistakenly assume that growing in holiness is simply a matter of either exerting personal willpower or passively expecting God to act. But even those who understand the need for both exerting one’s will and developing dependence on Christ still need the encouraging support of a community of other Christians. Paul consistently described a corporate dynamic of growth (Romans 15.14; 2 Corinthians 1.4; 1 Thessalonians 4.18; 5.11,14; 2 Thessalonians 3.11-15; Titus 1.9; 2.4,15). Paul never imagined sanctification of isolated individuals but always of individuals within the context of an intimate community. For a powerful example of the kind of community believers ought to experience, consider one of Jesus’s final prayers on earth. In John 17.20-23, Jesus says he desires believers to have the same intimacy with one another as he and the Father share. One significant reason for that level of intimacy is the encouragement it provides for growth. In that kind of supporting, and at times correcting, community, believers help each other so that their active living is saturated with the principles of Christian integrity. So, guys, don’t try to go it alone. Otherwise, you’ll end where our friend ended, struggling against forces that intend to shape your integrity in negative ways. And it will have disastrous effects, starting with your own spirituality, but certainly not ending there. About The Author

Gò0dNews for Women
by Amy Mercer
still remember the first time I dribbled a basketball. That event marked the beginning of my quest to prove that anything boys could do, I could do better— or at least as well. As a young girl, I prided myself on the fact that I carried as many scrapes and scars from bicycle and skateboard crashes as most of the boys in my neighborhood. But eventually, time would demonstrate that I didn’t always have the strength, stamina, or skill to be the invincible woman I dreamed of becoming. I believe my quest for action and adventure is inherent in my God-given makeup. It’s the way I’m wired. However, I have also come to realize that this part of my personality can easily take on a destructive need to prove that I am strong enough and tough enough to take on life’s challenges without anyone else’s help. Many times, this mentality has caused me to crash and burn. As a follower of Christ, I have come to understand my need to rely on a loving heavenly Father, as well as my need to rely on those He places in my life for guidance and encouragement. Walking in my own strength alone is a setup for inevitable failure and frustration. You may not have been a tomboy like I was, but there are probably times you’ve felt the need to prove your strength and abilities, to buckle down and demonstrate that you have what it takes for the task ahead. And perhaps you have also experienced those moments when your own strength and abilities failed you. So what are we to do in those cases? Do we concede defeat? Do we admit our weaknesses and stop there? Certainly not. Throughout the Bible, there are countless scriptures commanding followers of Christ to be strong. For instance, Ephesians 6:10 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” But His kind of strength is not one we accomplish on our own.
14 // March 2018
I have always found it interesting that God’s word doesn’t tell us to pray for strength; rather, it commands us to be strong. Why? For one, God never demands anything He hasn’t already provided. He tells us to be strong because He has placed His strength in us. Or, as the above scripture states, He has placed “His mighty power” within us. This is great news, especially on those days when I am feeling especially weak and vulnerable. Yes, I will continue to strengthen myself with exercise and I will continue to develop in knowledge
and skill. But this kind of strengthening and training is secondary to my relationship with God. When I am weak and vulnerable, I can trust Him to be a good Father. And that’s when I know it’s okay that my earthly strength is fleeting. 1 Timothy 4:8 sums it up like this: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” About The Author

Parenting Hack by Rachel Lowe
ife hacks are really popular right now. You can find articles, listicles, and videos on hacks to save money or to become more efficient. These “hacks” (short for “hackings”) are supposed to make life easier. But there are also some parenting strategies, my hacks, that have helped me through the years so I don’t feel so much like a hack at parenting. My sweet friend just delivered baby number three. He was an unexpected blessing for their family and with all of his perfect fingers and toes, it was still an adjustment. He was the first boy. His sisters were older. My friend asked me with a curious concern in her voice, “How do you do it? You’ve got four kids and I am having a hard time managing three.” I had been asked this same curious question on many occasions and often pondered upon how I was able to manage four kids with a full time job, a husband who runs multiple businesses, all the while being involved in local community programs all year long. These thoughts led me to deeper thoughts of whether I was actually managing my four kids well enough. Outside appearances showed that my kids were happy, but I had my doubts. My friend’s question that day gave way to a beautiful revelation. I honestly answered her with the simplest words I could find. “I celebrate the wins.” These words gave way to a beautiful explanation of how this mom survives every single day. God’s word tells us to think on “…whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Phil. 4:8).
20 // March 2018
There are many things in parenting that are not lovely. My kids and I make mistakes and our actions are not always virtuous. Our attitudes are not always praiseworthy and our thoughts are not always pure. Do we meditate on these things? Do we dwell on our mistakes and wallow in our own unrighteousness? Absolutely not. In our house, we celebrate the wins. As our youngest is being potty trained and, for once, chooses to tell me she has to go to the potty—WIN! As our teenage son speaks kindly to his (annoying) little brother – WIN! I spy my daughter hugging on her sister to comfort her after she falls—WIN! The dirty clothes finally made their way to the hamper without me having to remind my child 1,000 times—WIN! To be honest, I would have to give some credit for this winning mentality to my training in counseling. Research is abundant on the topic of positive thoughts producing positive actions. Have you ever heard the saying, “Change your thoughts, and you can change your world” (Norman Vincent Peale)? I often use this strategy in counseling adolescents. Perception is everything and if you can change your perception of things from negative thoughts to positive ones, you have won the battle. Dear friend, look around you and find what is noble, just, pure, and lovely. Set your thoughts on these things. This life is not meant to simply be endured. Find God’s blessings in your daily wins and trust that God can redeem and refine the difficult areas of our lives.

Seasons of Life
e are only a few weeks from spring and I enjoy a little of what each season brings. Fall is my favorite season because of the beautiful leaves that fall through the air to cover the yard and also the crisp air. The evenings around the fire roasting marshmallows are memories that forever play out in my mind. Although winter is my least favorite, there is always some excitement when the meteorologist begins to predict snow. We head to the grocery store to stock up on all our favorite snacks. We make sure the snow tubes are ready and then it begins, the wait. The kids looking out the windows, and praying it really comes. The coldness it brings is no enjoyment for me. So when spring comes, and the flowers begin to come up I am all ready to enjoy those amazing spring days. We spend lots of time outside, riding bikes, taking walks, playing games, and fishing. Then, there is summer. Summer is filled with swimming, ice cream, and catching lighting bugs. The seasons all bring a little something to enjoy. Life is the same way. We have different seasons in our lives and although we may not enjoy all that each season brings, if we look close enough we can find something valuable. I have lived in many different seasons of life. Some seasons have been full of laughter and joy. Other seasons have brought pain. For example, in life I have experienced many trials, which include two miscarriages. During that time, it brought grief. I also have felt grief in a very deep way, after losing my dad unexpectedly many years ago. Then there has been divorce,
22 // March 2018
heartache, and sickness. I actually experienced loss of my body, after having a double mastectomy due to breast cancer. Loss happens, and in each loss, I experienced grief in some way. I am happy to say there have been lots of happy seasons, such as marriage to my husband Jacen and the birthing of each of my two amazing sons. These are seasons of joy and experiencing life to the fullest. God has been so very good to me and my family. In each of the seasons of life that have been hard and made us weary and tired, I can still glean something from each experience. God has taken everything and brought purpose. No matter how difficult each season has been, and I have lost something of me in those seasons, God replaced those places with something of greater value. John 16:33 says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world.” Jesus has overcome the world. Yes, in life we will still experience trials, but in each of those seasons God will instill in you something of greater value, and your future in life can be bigger, better, and brighter. Don’t get stuck in those hard places. Put on your grownup pants and fight through it with faith. Open your heart and receive the more valuable things. He has given me love, hope, joy, peace, and so much more. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the thought and plans I have for you’, says the Lord, ‘thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.’” See? God has plans for your welfare, so the enemy attacks you with warfare. I encourage you to read Ephesians 6:10-18 and put on the armor of God. If you have ask Jesus into your heart, then in this Life you have enlisted in the army of God, and that means you are a warrior. You must put on your armor to not only endure the fight, but to win. We fight to win. And the Bible says we win. When life throws you a curve ball, pick it up and throw it into the enemy’s face by taking what you have been through and allowing God to use it for his glory. I encourage you today, to get up! Find yourself, the real you, the victorious you. God has seasons of miracles to bring you for this year. Don’t miss them!

Self-Care is Sanity by Patty Lauren Seger
s a fitness professional, most of my days are filled with a myriad of clients wanting to improve their lives. Improvement can take on many forms depending on the individual, but one thing is largely the same—the concentration is on the physical improvement. As a personal trainer, I would not expect a new client to come to me with goals focused only on their mental health. Are we missing a key component in our health success by not focusing more of our intention on our mental well being? Over the last couple of years, the term “self-care” has become increasingly prevalent. Often, we see selfcare equated with luxurious parts of our day—long bubble baths, hair and nail treatments, massages, etc. However, self-care is more than just taking time to pamper ourselves. If we fail to understand the importance behind self-care and what it is truly about, we may disregard it as optional instead of necessary. In a recent yoga class I attended, the instructor said, “Selfcare is not selfish, it is sanity.” Like the varying goals each of my personal training clients have, self-care is just as unique! We structure our days to maximize our time, fill our availabilities with appointments, and push ourselves to our limits. We often ignore the warning signs our bodies give us to slow down and this can result in fatigue, stress, and illness. Instead of looking at self-care as frivolous, try looking at it as a small part of every day to stay grounded and refreshed which enables us to live our daily lives with a renewed sense of capability and purpose. Think of it the same way as rest days for your body—your mental and emotional being needs rest periods and moments of detox. Think about how self-care relates to your individual life and needs. For some of us, that means the massage
24 // March 2018
or bubble bath and for others, it means an hour of quiet, devotional time or an intense fitness class a few times a week. When you begin to personalize the benefits of self-care, you will begin to see the invaluable effects it has on our daily lives. Start this very moment by taking a deep inhale—as deep as you can. Hold it for 3 seconds. Keep holding! Now, release all of the air from your lungs—squeeze it all out! Try that exercise 3 more times. Do you feel a little more relaxed? A little more focused? If you said yes, congratulations—you have just practiced a moment of self-care. Taking care of yourself doesn’t need to take hours or a whole day— it can be a few moments or an hour every morning or evening before bed. My greatest wish for those of you reading this is that your whole being is enriched with the benefits of a healthy lifestyle—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually! When we start treating our body as the whole temple God has given us is when we can truly reap the benefits of the simple things life has to offer us.

Unlocking the Mystery of Forgiveness by Gabriel Thomas
here are four steps to unlocking the freedom of forgiveness. 1. You must realize that it is not the flesh, but the spirit that inhabits the flesh — Ephesians 2. Pray for the release of bitterness — It says in Acts 8:21-23, “You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.” Bitterness leads to depression, anger, vengeance, and other sins which are too heavy to bear; that’s why Jesus paid the price by dying on the cross so that we would not have to bear the weight of our sins and our burdens. You cannot move forward with forgiveness if you are dragging a heavy load of bitterness toward the person who has wronged you. 3. Ask them to forgive you. What?! — Yes, asking them to forgive you is one of the most key components of total forgiveness. It will also be one of the most
26 // March 2018
difficult things that you have ever done in your life. However, once this is done, you will have a freedom like no other in your life. 4. Love your enemies — Jesus said in Matthew 5:4344 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,’” and in Matthew 22:37-40, “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’” You have now unlocked the mystery of forgiveness only to find out that there’s really no mystery at all. FEATURED COVER STORY
Downtown Shopping at its Finest by Lesley MacDonald
lement is a designer boutique located in historic downtown Cleveland. Featuring a variety of unique statement pieces and a carefully curated selection of premium brands, Element delivers a beyond-ordinary shopping experience in every way, right in our very own local neighborhood. Jodi, owner of Element, and her husband Steven, have been residents of Cleveland since 2003. With a background in fashion marketing and merchandising, Jodi had a long-sought dream of creating a special place to shop where she could realize her training and passion for great style. After all, how we dress is a way to make a statement without saying a word. Noticing a need for an in-town location where residents don’t have to travel to other cities to acquire well-made, chic designs, she and her husband saw an opportunity to invest in the community and make that dream into a reality. In November of 2016, Jodi and Steven saw a ‘for rent’ sign downtown in a historic building and seized the opportunity,

investing over 5 months of renovation work into their location, a true labor of love celebrating their appreciation for the heritage, history and aesthetic of downtown Cleveland. May 11, 2017 marked their grand opening, and they have been blessed with steadily growing visibility and local customers who enjoy supporting a locally-owned business. Element offers an extensive and eclectic collection of clothing and accessories, featuring over 20 brands including lines we know and love like Free People, Articles of Society, French Connection, BCBGeneration and HOBO, as well as introducing new-to-you brands like Kerisma, J.O.A., Moon River, ADA belts, and Molly Bracken. Styles offer a variety of looks, from boho chic to retro-inspired to cool to classic to fashion-forward. Many designs go perfectly from the office to an evening out. Element also features local artisan gifts like The Rustic House, a soy-based candle line out of Chattanooga, as well as hand-crafted jewelry lines like Caroline Banks (Chattanooga), Lorraine Frances (Nashville), and Jill Massey (Atlanta), that add a special touch to any outfit.
Element’s style offerings have got you covered from casual to special occasion, with a variety of sizes available including curvy, as well as a wide range of price points to choose from. Brands like FashionABLE are also fair-trade and responsibly made; designs from brands like Promesa and Stateside are made in the USA. Jodi’s selections for Element provide a ‘whole package’ approach, as all styles compliment each other wonderfully; you can build one great and distinctive outfit, add a great collection of unique treasures to enhance your own wardrobe, you can even build an entire wardrobe from the ground up at Element. Many customers are also thrilled with the inter-generational appeal in styles. There truly is something special for everyone at Element.
The location and atmosphere of Element are also special and unique. Walking through the front door, you’re greeted with the ambience of exposed brick walls in the 100+ year old building that Jodi and Steven worked to uncover during the renovation process. Hardware and shelving offer an industrial vibe, with farmhouse-style doors that accent the fitting rooms, finished with the treasure of dark-stained, original hardwood flooring. A contemporary blend of music plays, while select artwork and decor celebrate natural textures, with a focal point of an Alphonso Mucha print. A handmade counter from repurposed wooden treasures brings the store’s look together. Another way Element goes beyond the ordinary is the level of service you receive as their customer. Jodi takes great interest in listening to her clients, developing a relationship, understanding their wants and needs, and responding with an ever-evolving selection that gets better all the time. Her staff is always happy to see you, offering a perfect balance of assistance and advice as you enjoy perusing the aisles. Element also features mobile-style shopping with active accounts on Facebook and Instagram, listing new arrivals, special events and sales, responding to online interest, going above the mark to make special orders for requested sizes, even offering shipping opportunities for guests from out of town. Gift certificates are
always available in a variety of amounts. Element also offers personal wish lists for clients whose loved ones and friends enjoy purchasing for surprises and special occasions including holidays, graduations, birthdays and anniversaries. Element also offers private shopping events for customers who’d like to enjoy a special experience with their friends and loved ones. As historic downtown Cleveland continues to revitalize, Element is grateful for your support as we boost our town’s economy through supporting small, locally-owned businesses. Element is excited to grow with our community as they soon celebrate their one year anniversary, and strive to continue offering an amazing product, as well as achieving upcoming goals including an introductory selection of footwear (now available), eventual expansion of business hours and more. For downtown shopping and service at its finest, a short drive will have you arriving in style in your Element. Element is located at 60 N Ocoee St, Cleveland, TN, 37311. Business hours are Tuesday through Friday 12pm-6pm, and Saturday 11am-4pm. Private shopping appointments available upon request. here are times in life when challenges make us second guess moving forward. Sometimes it’s seems easier to do an about face and run from problems. Problems at work, issues within the family, finances, or health can all bring our walk of faith to a screeching halt. God never intended for us to quit. He created us to be overcomers and more than conquerors through the blood of Jesus. Knowing who we are and whose we are enables us to brush ourselves off and continue our faith walk. The fight is fixed, the prize is guaranteed. “The race is not given to the swift nor the strong but he who endures until the end” (Ecclesiastes 9:11). God does not require us to run a fast race knocking others down to get ahead, but instead He is looking for people who will endure hardness as good soldiers. Even Jesus endured the cross. What would life be like if Jesus had given up mid cross, jumped down, and said, “This is too much”? He endured the cross despite the shame.

God’s word tells us we reap not if we faith not. With God’s supernatural ability flowing in our lives, we are able to push past obstacles in life. One way this is achieved is by planting good seeds in everyday life. There is a seed time and a harvest time. Plant good seeds while there is still time so that you can reap a bountiful harvest. Walk worthy of the calling on your life; walk by faith and not by sight. Don’t let the obstacles that Satan or circumstances put before you cause you to give up; instead, trust the creator of heaven and earth. God has given us His precious Holy Spirit to lead and guide us into all truth. “God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.” The best is ahead of you. You can only obtain the best when you determine within yourself to press on. About The Author

xpectations, we all have them when we enter marriage. Even the vows you spoke to each other on that glorious day speak of the expectations each of you has of the other: “...to have and to hold, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish....” What were your expectations when you married? Was it financial security, companionship, love, raising a family, someone who understood you? In the Broadway play, My Fair Lady, Eliza Doolittle’s expectations were minimal, yet important to her: “All I want is a room somewhere, far away from the cold night’s air, with one enormous chair... Someone’s head resting on my knee, warm and tender as he can be, who takes good care of me, O wouldn’t it be loverly?” Expectations are personal beliefs that are developed in a person’s mind, based on what he feels should take place in a relationship. They can be fueled by defective concepts formed due to past experience, observing others, or cultural thought. They can be reasonable or unreasonable, flawed or sound, biased or impartial. They are the culprits that steal marital joy and contentment.
32 // March 2018
So what happens when expectations in the marital relationship aren’t met? What happens when those Hallmark movies aren’t reflected in our own lives? What happens when the winds of trouble, heartache, and disappointment begin to howl, and those unrealistic expectations you had suddenly begin to reveal how terribly inadequate that mate you have chosen is to fulfill them? That’s when discontentment can begin to point fingers, and blame is given rather than forgiveness. When unforgiveness combusts, the fires of bitterness soon flare up, threatening to destroy the relationship. Smoldering embers of bitterness and cynicism become the norm, destroying a loving relationship which could otherwise nurture each other, bring honor and glory to God, and give hope and life to others. Instead, it is a union which gives no pleasure or joy or benefit to each other or to others around them, but rather, causes others to stumble. When we foster and promote bitterness in our lives, we affect so many more people than just ourselves and are more likely to hurt others. Bitterness is not a private thing. It will always affect everything and everyone in its wake, causing collateral damage in the process. Believing that your happiness, fulfillment, and contentment hinge on your partner will only bring disappointment and disillusionment. A mere human can never meet another human’s needs because God designed us so that we would look to Him for our every need! Don’t look to your spouse as the one who can meet all your needs. That position belongs only to Jesus! Psalm 62:5 says, “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.” William Paul Young said, “When you learn to live without expectations, there are always surprises right around the corner.” Colossians 3:12-17 gives some wonderful substitutions for expectations: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. With these virtues, it will be much easier to bear with one another and forgive one another. Love is the binding force that meshes it all together. The outcome will be that God’s peace will rule and be reflected in your decisions and actions. And what wonderful surprises you will receive as you and your spouse allow God to meet your great expectations!

How the Stigma of “Politics” Alienates Moral Leaders
I
40 // March 2018
About The Author
n Matthew 23, Christ outlines a list of woes to those in church and political leadership who are found hypocritical. It is a brutal scolding, warning self-centered and abusive leaders of the repercussions of their faulty ways. But what is often obscured by the aggressive tone of the previous passages is verse 34 where Christ says, “Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets and wise men, and scribes, and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city.” Not much has changed in two thousand years. Even today, we debate and scrutinize every action of political leadership in our communities. We devour those who would dare to present themselves as candidate for public office. At best, we judge them next to an ever-evolving and politically ambiguous measuring stick of partisan platforms and uninformed positions. At worst, we completely retreat from all things political. We seem to be very good at hearing Christ say “woe” to hypocritical leaders, but we are not so good at hearing the “woe’ he issues to us. In verse 34, Jesus turns his finger to the people and clearly states he will be sending wise men and it won’t matter. It won’t matter because they will be crucified and scorned. He is just as right today as he was then. In 2014, Pew Research conducted a study to see who was willing to seek political office. The study found that only 2% of people would consider running for office and of those who were willing, 43% were retirement age. A similar study noted that successful businesspeople, educators, and service workers would not seek office for fear that it would destroy their reputation. Those who were willing to run for office were those who felt they didn’t have much to lose. Could it be that we are alienating, perhaps crucifying the wisest among us? Could it be that we have been left with candidates who have nothing to lose? Wouldn’t we be better led by those who would feel the repercussions of bad leadership? We should want the wise men. We should want our leaders to fear losing. As the political season approaches, consider those you may crucify, scold, and persecute politically. Consider that you may be pushing away the wisest among us which may make you responsible for the disaster of limiting the choices at the Dr. Adam Lowe is a published researcher, business man, and ballot box. radio host of Man UP America. Chicken and Mozzarella Penne Pasta recook your pasta and reserve about half a cup of the pasta water for later. In a large pan with 2 tbsp oil, sautÊ the minced garlic for about a minute and be careful not to burn it. Sprinkle the chicken tenders with salt and paprika and add them to the pan. Cook for about 1-2 min per side. Dice the sun-dried tomatoes and add them to the chicken. Pour in the half and half and add in the mozzarella cheese and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer till a creamy sauce forms. Add cooked pasta to the sauce and season with basil, salt, and crushed red pepper flakes. The sauce may seem a little too thick since adding in the pasta so this is where the pasta water comes in. Stir it in little by little and not all at once. It may not require using it all. Stir it in until it reaches the desired creaminess and then it’s ready to serve. This is an easy and hearty pasta dish that pairs wonderfully with a side salad and garlic bread.

The bonds between good food and good health are strong, and it’s crucial to fuel our body with the proper nutrients to stay healthy. While a deficit of the right foods in our daily diet can lead to increased health complications and poor disease management, making sure we’re including the right foods in a balanced diet can help us take some control and ownership in our overall health. Furthermore, a well-balanced diet plays an important role in the healing and recovery process when we do find ourselves
When it comes to food, natural color often signifies specific nutrients that can help your body stay healthy and ward off disease. Beta-carotene-rich orange foods like carrots and squash provide vitamin A. Green veggies like spinach, broccoli, and kale are storehouses of fiber, vitamins A, E, and C, and potassium. Some red and blue foods like cherries, cranberries, and blueberries are packed with antioxidants that can improve your health. The Welcoming Parent A Look at Luke 15:11-31
ood stories draw us in because we relate to the characters. Great stories take a step further and call us to action. Luke 15:11-31 does both. In his book Return of the Prodigal Son, Henri Nouwen relates his spiritual journey to the characters of this story. Nouwen describes how, like the prodigal, we experience times of wandering from the household of God. Other times, like the elder son, we reside in the home but allow our contribution to define us. While I easily relate to both, the call of this story is to become like the father. Let’s look at the father in Luke 15 and discuss what we must do to be like him. First, he risks love. He spends years caring for his sons, building them a home and an inheritance. When we love, we make ourselves vulnerable. Similarly, God opened Himself to pain and sorrow when he initiated a relationship with humanity. The cross is the perfect symbol of God’s love demonstrating the pain God would risk to have a relationship with us. No one has suffered more than God, because no one loves more than God. Second, the father goes to his children. When the father sees the prodigal returning, he runs to meet him (Luke 15:20). When the older son was upset, the father went to meet him in the field (Luke 15:28). Similarly, God meets us where we are. Theologians commonly refer to the life of Jesus as the incarnation, God meeting us on our turf to make a relationship with God possible. Like the father, God
46 // March 2018
initiates reconciliation with his children. He watches and waits in anticipation for his kids to come home. Third, the father affirms the status of his sons. Both sons raise the question of their worth. The younger son thought that his wandering would mean he was no longer a son (Luke 15:22). The elder defined himself by his work and could only see himself as a slave (Luke 15:29). In both cases, the father reminds his sons that he values them because they are his sons (Luke 15:22-24, 31). Similarly, neither our wandering nor our work defines our worth in God’s eyes. Regardless of how far we go or how much we do, we will never be any more or any less children of God, but that is all we need (Romans 8:15-17). For those of us who have come home to God’s love, we must extend that to others. We can take comfort in the welcoming and affirmation of these sons, but we must do more. We, like our heavenly Father, must risk love, go to the lost and insecure, and affirm the status of all of God’s children. In these ways, we continue the mission of God to reconcile the world to Himself. May we all become spiritual mothers and fathers, standing ready to throw our arms around fellow children of God, to welcome them home, and to remind them who they are. About The Author

The Power of Agreement by Kelly McDonald Jr.
very person has their own unique worship and prayer expressions towards God. Some people raise their hands in worship while others may not. In prayer, some people quietly tell God how much they love Him, while others may be more exuberant and even exclaim “Hallelujah!” We are created by God to have these individual differences. While it is important for us to express our unique personalities, it is also important for us to come together in unison or agreement. In Matthew 18:19, Jesus said that if any two of us would agree on earth that it shall be granted by our Father in Heaven. The Greek word translated as “agree” in this verse is sumphoneo. It is where we derive the English word symphony. It simply means to have an agreement, to make a bargain, or form a compact. It has two root words: sun, which means “together with”, and phono, which means sound. We see the word phono in words that pertain to sound such as a microphone or xylophone. Literally, sumphoneo means to come together with one sound. In Matthew 18:19, Jesus said that if we would come together with the same sound then our request would be granted. When we encounter difficulties in life, people can be quick to give advice. While there is nothing wrong with this, sometimes we just need that special friend who will

pray with us in agreement, that someone who will join us with one sound. This could be your spouse, another family member, or just a trustworthy friend. This special person will understand the petition of your heart towards God and pray with you. David, one of the great men of the Bible, was pursued by Saul. He was constantly on the run, and he needed that special someone to agree with him. He found that in Jonathan. They agreed to protect and help each other in times of need. Even the Apostle Paul asked believers in certain churches to agree with him in prayer about a specific need: “Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you” (1 Thessalonians 3:1). When we join together, it can make the fight easier on everyone involved. “And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight” (Lev 26:8a). As often as we may need advice in life, sometimes we just need someone to agree with us in prayer. I also encourage you to look for others that just need someone to stand with them. Let’s learn to agree and watch God meet the need! About The Author

My Strength in My Weakness by Kelly Wells
e are usually more likely to look at what we are good at to determine our future. If we actually look into God’s word and start looking at some of our weakest areas we just might stumble across our purpose. I look at my life for example; one of my weakest areas was school. I was a quiet, shy, and insecure student. I felt that I wasn’t as smart as the other kids so that insecurity made school even harder for me. I always felt defeated before I could even get started. That weakness I turned into my purpose. Every day I get to help students who may struggle in a certain area. I get to look at them as if they were me and empathize with them. I get to encourage them and see their faces light up when they learn something new. I get to see God use my weakness to help others! Another weakness I have had to struggle through was depression. I lost several years of my life in that dark pit, but God didn’t waste that weakness either. One day as I was drowning in my depression, I felt God pick me up, take off my dark grey gloomy cloak, and place in my heart a new gift. That is when I began to write about my pain and suffering through depression. To my surprise my writing

was helping me and helping others along the way, too! Did I mention God uses our weaknesses? There is one last thing I would like to boast about. Earlier I stated that I was quiet, shy, and insecure. Well, God is using that too! I have had several opportunities to speak at different churches and give my testimony of how God has taken my weaknesses and used them for His Glory. Yep that’s right; He has taken this quiet, shy, and insecure little girl and shaped and molded her into a mighty woman of God that is just dying to tell others about what He has done for her. Please don’t ever think for one moment God can’t do the same for you, too! In closing, stop looking at all the great things you can do and look at your weaknesses; you just might find your purpose hidden in disguise of a weakness. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways’, saith the Lord.” — Isaiah 55:8 KJV About The Author

Just Beyond the Gates by Shelia Bird
ou won’t believe this, but I recently got a glimpse of the Garden of Eden while visiting our local burger joint. School was closed due to bad weather so I decided to take the little ones in my life to McDonalds. They devoured their Happy Meals and headed off to what I must say is one of the noisiest places on planet earth. To them it is a children’s utopia. While waiting patiently for them to wear down, I watched a toddler continuously wander off the playground to the locked maintenance gate behind the main area. He pulled and tugged on the gate and refused to return to the slides and tunnels on the playground that delighted the rest of the children. The entire playground was his to enjoy to the fullest, but for some reason he thought there was more fun to be had if he could just manage to slip through the parameters of safety and into the unknown. If he had somehow achieved the desire of his wandering heart, he would have discovered almost immediately that something was terribly wrong. For one thing the gate would slam shut and lock behind him. There would be no turning back until he was rescued by the careful, watchful eye of his caregiver. This reminded me of the story of Adam and Even in the book of Genesis. They were God’s children, created and brought to life by God’s own breath and placed in the Garden of Eden. The garden was awesome. It had everything a man and woman could ever want for. It was perfect in every way. There was just one little problem. God established a boundary to protect them. He told them not to eat the fruit that grew on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

One day Eve wandered off and had an enticing conversation with the devil, the very enemy of God, who took on the form of a serpent. He convinced her that God had lied and that eating from the tree would not bring about death. For some senseless reason she believed the serpent and she did the unthinkable. An unspoiled oasis, fully stocked with delectable delights was suddenly not enough and she ate the forbidden fruit. Then she went a step further and persuaded Adam to do the same. If you know your Bible at all, you know what happened next. The sin of disobedience broke the heart of God. The consequence was to be cast out of the garden forever. The gates of Eden were locked behind them and guarded by God’s angels. Their new home would prove to be riddled with hardship and sorrow, equivalent to sin and death. Even though God’s children lost sight of Him, He never lost His great love for them. He had a redemption plan in place for us before the foundation of the world. The Bible says in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (NIV). Because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our sins can be forgiven. Jesus is our hope and our salvation. Because of Him, one glorious day the gates of heaven will swing open wide and we shall behold the splendor of heaven. We will share eternal celebratory praise with the angels of glory and all those who have gone before us. Praise be to God for His unfathomable love for us. About The Author
