Love

ove. What reward do you have? This seems like a strange question if your topic is love. Reward and love just aren’t talked about together. It’s just not the way we think. I don’t love my wife and children for a reward. Putting the two words together reminds me of an old friend who told his daughter, “If you’re going to fall in love, you might as well make it to a rich man. If you marry a rich man or a poor man you die either way.” I actually was not the first to put these two unrelated topics together. The best I can tell, the first one to do it was Jesus. In Matthew 5:44-48 Jesus asks, “If you love those who love you. What reward do you have?” Jesus is asking us here, “Are you not better at this love thing than the world? After all they love people who love them.” Are we different than the lost when it comes to love? We should be. We have had love at the highest degree demonstrated to us. Paul said while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Here Jesus makes three points about love. First, we should love as God loves. God allows the sun and rain to come into both good and bad lives. God is not fickle when it comes to his love and goodness. He calls us to the same place. Second, Jesus tells

us to pray for our enemies. I have found that it is very difficult to hold a grudge against someone for whom you are praying. Jesus demonstrated this on the cross when he prayed for the Father to forgive those who crucified him. Lastly, Jesus tells us to greet one another as brothers. He didn’t say treat them as friends but rather brothers. We may or may not stick with a friend, but I will never leave a brother. We should treat one another as brothers. Now that I think about it, I have received great reward from the love I have had for my family. I have people there that are always on my side, even when they shouldn’t be. I wouldn’t suggest you going to my wife or one of my grown daughters and striking out at me. They will strike back. And the same goes for me protecting them. But you know where I get the greatest reward? That is when I love the unlovable. Jesus said that is when I look the most like my father. It is the fastest way to show the world we are different. If we don’t love our enemy we are no different than the world. This love thing has great rewards.

uch of who you will be when you grow up depends on who you are while you are growing up. Today’s world is very different from the world that I grew up in, but many of the same principles still apply. Each of us possesses three very important senses that act as a filter between us and the world; the sense of sight, the sense of hearing, and the ability to speak. We must be careful what we allow to enter our minds because what enters our minds enters our hearts and what is in our hearts controls our behavior. What we allow to control us now, will also control us when we grow up! Let us look at each of the following:

The sense of sight: Be careful little eyes what you see! — It has gotten to the place where technology controls

much of what we see. Television shows offer a lot of content that we shouldn’t watch. We can scarcely turn on the television without seeing shows that contain violence and other things that we shouldn’t focus on. The internet is the same way in that there is much there that can lead us astray. Even the advertisements cross the boundaries of common decency! Still, both can be used for Biblical study, devotions, wholesome movies, and other worthwhile programming.

The sense of hearing: Be careful little ears what you hear! — Much of what has been said about the sense of sight applies also to the sense of hearing. We must be careful about what we listen to, including dirty language

and off-color jokes which we should not listened to. Comedians on television today use terrible and filthy language and many people consider it funny. What should you do if you are in a group and a dirty joke is about to be told? You should let it be known that you do not desire to hear the joke and simply walk away! This should not be done in a better-than-thou attitude but with a humble spirit. We must guide our sense of hearing to God’s word. It is much better to have a clean mind than to be popular.

The ability to speak: Be careful little tongue what you say! — In James 3:8 we read, “But the tongue can no

man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” We must be careful of our words. Have you ever heard the following? “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” This is completely false and harsh words can be very hurtful to someone! In each of the above, we see that we must conform to God’s word in our sense of sight, our sense of hearing, and in control of our tongue (spoken words), as well as our thought life! In order to do this we must not only read our Bible, but we must also have God’s word hidden in our hearts. Being in the Prison of Our Mind Fighting the Spiritual Battle by Sam Blankenship

’ve been a part of a jail ministry for about eighteen years now. I have been in several county jails including Bradley, Meigs, Fannin, Rhea, and Anderson counties. I’ve seen folks who are depressed, suicidal, down, full of hatred toward themselves and to God. We, a lot of times, will blame God when we go through these types of battles. We have a tendency to blame someone or something rather than looking in the mirror. God gives us the liberty to make our own decisions. This is where we mess up a lot of times because we normally will try to do things our way instead of seeking out the guidance and direction through the Holy Ghost of God. We, as men of God, must get in the Word of God and stay on our knees asking for guidance and direction in everything we do. The problem, though, is we don’t. When we don’t do it God’s way and we quit praying and reading the Bible, satan will get in our minds and cause us to start doubting and then we start getting depressed and down and that father of lies will tell us we are not anything. Let me tell you something, he is right about one thing, we

are nothing, but through God we can do anything. It is a constant battle. The old saying says, “Give the devil an inch and he becomes the ruler.” When we go into the jails we try to encourage these folks to turn to God and give up doing things themselves and give it all to God. God is the only way you can overcome any battle you face. Let me tell you men right now, we need revival in our minds and lives and we need to fight this battle called life and we need to stand up against the attacks of the enemy and remind him we serve a God that will not back down from a fight and will defeat him any day of the week! Praise the Lord!! Cause one of these days God is going to cast satan himself into the Lake of fire and he will be defeated for good. If you want to win that spiritual battle and get let loose from those chains of depression and doubts, fall down on your knees and let Almighty God do the fighting for you and I promise you this: you will win (1 Peter 5:7)! Women Warriors by Alicia Klepper

ou may have heard the sentiment, “Two steps forward one step back, is still one step forward.” This is meant to be an encouragement; if you make progress and lose progress, as long as what you lost isn’t equal to or greater than what you gained, you still have victory. However, live this pattern long enough and you will feel like anything but the victor. This give-and-take

lifestyle is the opposite of God’s plan for your life. In fact, it is very clearly the doings of the devil: “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). It is the work of God when we take two steps forward. Jesus came to give us life, and life abundantly (John 10:10). Abundant means bountiful, generous; this is the direction of progress and gain, not one of loss and insufficiency. The Lord is the God of the great trade; He

will not take from us without supplying something of value and abundance in its place. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30). God does not provide for us two steps forward just to take one step of it back. He is constantly drawing us forward toward Him. It is time to take some ground! The ground between you and what God has purposed for you is your promised land. Every step toward Christ is anointed-ground, taking you further into the promises given to you in His word. He has established you in Christ Jesus in advance for the good works He created for you to do (Ephesians 2:10). It is time to advance onto that God-given ground. “See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore He would give to your fathers--to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-and to their descendants after them” (Deuteronomy 1:8). Take possession of what God has, in advance, declared as yours. But, what about that one step back? Backward motion does happen, often enough that we have grown accustomed to it, accepting it as the norm. The thief is so good and frequent at stealing that we no longer are appalled when he does so. Whether by the hand of your own decisions or the fact that a murderous thief manipulates this world, any already-possessed ground taken from you is indeed stolen. However, stolen ground can still be reclaimed to the glory of God! You may be facing a once blissful marriage that is now moving backward. Perhaps it is the promise of a heartbeat that just went silent. Maybe it is a once-healed diagnosis that has returned. Possibly pounds already lost are now re-found. What you thought you had forgiven has returned, pounding painfully on your heart. Oncesaved loved ones have turned their back on God. Increase has begun to decrease in some area of your life. The one step back is not the moment to retreat, it is the time to advance further, stronger, bolder into His word, time in prayer, and worship at His feet. When you find yourself in the one step back, drop to your knees and trust the God who owns it all. All of God’s promises are your land. “Instead of shame and dishonor, you will enjoy a double share of honor. You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours” (Isaiah 61:7). About The Author

few weeks ago, I had one of those moments that make parenting feel worthwhile. (I know, I know, your kids make you feel like that every day. I just don’t live in your world.) It was one of our older sons, up for a brief visit from Florida. Somehow, we got on the topic of the relationship my wife and I enjoy. My son spoke back to me words he had heard me say apparently fairly often to him or his older brother. (That can be a scary moment; I’m lucky to remember what I said yesterday at this point.) In this case, it was a good thing. “Dad, I can remember you telling me and David, ‘Before your mom was your mom, she was my wife. And no matter what disagreement you may have with your mom, you will always respect my wife.” There are many things (hopefully) that you get to teach your children over time. My wife (and to a lesser amount, I) have taught our kids how to read. They learn how to cook (Attention, future prospective spouses!), and I teach them bits of other languages as we go along. I also teach them to handle firearms safely and how to respect wildlife. I don’t know where their interests might develop during their lives, and some things I teach them may fall by the wayside and be lost. Some lessons, though, are enduring, and will impact the rest of their lives. Many of those are caught in the way that we live our daily lives. If I ensure that there is no doubt that I love my wife, that I value her as a person, as a Godgiven mate, as a perfect complement to me as a man, then I model that behavior for when my kids later say

“I Do” to someone. When I speak blessings and praise and honor to, over, and about her, I am setting a bar for them to meet. If I esteem her worthy of more attention than the attractive young lady that walks by our table in a restaurant, I send a message to my sons as to how they should respect their wives, and to my daughters as to what they should expect (demand) in any prospective suitor. In return, my wife speaks honor

and love for her husband, in words and deed, before not only our children but the world around us. Respect should be taught, and in the culture of this present day, if it does not come from us, the only version of it that the world will see is a warped sense of idol worship for athletes, entertainers, and public personalities that do not honor God with their language or their lives. n the 14th of this month, many will celebrate the loves of their life with plush teddy bears, long-stemmed roses, and oh-so-tasty treats. You know the ones with heart-shaped velvet boxes filled with unpredictable chocolates that please the tummy and warm the soul. Before Alzheimer’s disease reared its ugly head, my precious grandmother, an evangelist who ministered the Gospel for many years, remembered to check her mailbox every year around this time. Gleefully, she would find a small 8” x 8” package stocked with mixed nuts, crackers, and soft peppermint. I’d tuck in a handwritten note that read, “From my heart to yours.” As you are aware, that carefully appointed organ we call our heart carries and pumps blood through arteries (or blood vessels). Less known, is that research has found a direct link between clogged arteries and gum disease. “Much of the progression of plaque [building up in the arteries] is actually an inflammation process,” says Dr. Robert Bonow, past president of the American Heart Association. Inflammation of the gums is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. The good news is that it can usually be reversed with twice-daily brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings by a dental hygienist. In addition, here are a handful of more heart-healthy dental habits:

Skip the Ice — Well, not entirely, but chewing on ice can be pretty harmful to teeth and gums. Ice munchers often get cracked or chipped teeth, damage to tooth enamel,

Brush Smarter, Not Harder — Brushing too aggressively or using a firm toothbrush can wear down teeth and gums over time. Tip: Try an electric toothbrush that will pause when it detects hard brushing. Get Your Daily Servings of H2O — Drinking lots of water stimulates the production of saliva, which naturally helps to kill bacteria. Up the Nutrition — Among other things, poor nutrition can lead to gum inflammation. It is very important to maintain a nutritional diet that includes vitamin C and folic acid, which are active contributors to healthy gums. Get a Good Night’s Sleep — Exhaustion and stress causes the body to release cortisol, which is linked with inflammation of the gums. Not long after my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, I sought information on its prevention. Currently, there is no cure or reversal of its progression. But of course, prayer can change anything. You, too, can find victory in prayer because God wholeheartedly loves you. And remember this as you subscribe to these five heart-healthy dental habits: Love never fails!

Why is Love What It is All About? t’s February and we know that what comes with the month of February is this thought and idea of love. It seems that when a person thinks of February, people tend to immediately think about hearts, the color of red, roses, candy, and love. Why do we tend to associate the idea of love with the month of February? For me and I’m sure most other people think this way because of this “special holiday” called Valentine’s Day. Now this day is not a bad day, but often times it is used in a way that it can become overrated from what it really is. It seems like Valentine’s Day can turn into a competition of who can win that girl or who can give the best gift, etc. It seems that we have become obsessed with this idea of love, often believing that this is what love is all about. A person may look at Valentine’s Day as the greatest day to love another person and they give their very best only on that day, rather than giving their very best any other day out of the year as well. We become so focused on giving love or our very best for one day of the year, that we often miss out on giving love the entire rest of the time. Even though we often view love in a way for fulfilling our wants/desires, the fact of the matter is that true love is not about ourselves at all. True love doesn’t even have to involve finding that special someone; rather true love should be about giving your all and giving your very best. I cannot begin to describe how much I am loved and how often I tend to fail at giving back the love that I have been so freely given. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,

Christ died for us” (NIV). Christ’s demonstration of love is the greatest demonstration of love that one person could ever have or experience. Christ gave his life, He died, gave it all up, selflessly, just so you and I could have an opportunity to live freely for eternity. This kind of love that Christ gives is indescribable and is something that I tend to take for granted every single day. Not only do I take for granted the love that Christ has shown to and given to me, but I also do not show that same kind of love like I really should to those that I come into contact with every single day. You see, true love involves self-sacrifice; it involves showing kindness even when you don’t want to; it shows a helping hand and a willing heart that will give the absolute best, at all times. True love shows people who Jesus is and it allows others to see that Christ is the one who lives inside of you. Showing and giving true love is not an easy thing to do, but is an absolutely necessary thing to do. In order to be the people that God has called us to be, we must show the love of Jesus Christ to all people, at all times, no matter what. I pray that you would live a life that shows others who Jesus truly is and that you would love with everything that you have, because it is Christ who has given you the very best, so you should go and do the same. Love is not about us; rather it is all about Him, not for our glory, but for God’s. This is what love is all about. About The Author

Giants in the Land Obstacles in Our Path

any of us are familiar with the story in the book of Numbers where God instructs Moses, “Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan which I am going to give you.” Moses sent out men with instructions to see if the people are strong or weak, few or many. Is the land good or bad? Are the cities open or fortified? Is the land fat or lean? The spies returned and reported to Moses and Aaron that the land flows with milk and honey. They brought back grapes, pomegranates and figs. The spies went on to report that people in the land are strong and are giants, saying, “We are like grasshoppers in their sight.” As a result of giants in the land, and forgetting that God promised to give them the land, the sons of Israel wept that night grumbling to Moses and Aaron, “Would that we had died in Egypt! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to die by the sword?” Apart from the grumbling and complaining, the spies’ report was accurate. There were fruits and figs in the land and it was a land flowing with milk and honey. Further, their report was also accurate that there were indeed giants in the land. However, two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb looked beyond what they saw with the eyes and chose to focus on God’s promise recorded in Numbers 13:2 that He was going to give them the land. It seems that whenever God calls us to do something, there is a giant blocking our path. The giant’s challenges are usually accurate when they remind us that we are not smart enough, experienced enough, or qualified enough to carry out God’s plan. The giant currently in my path is the giant called Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2014 my wife and best friend was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s. This is truly the most difficult trial we have ever faced. The giant is correct in his taunts that I am not qualified or patient enough to care for

an Alzheimer’s patient. But like Joshua and Caleb, I must look past the giant and focus on what God has called me to do. Alzheimer’s does not release me from God’s command for me to love my wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). It does not release me from my covenant agreement to love my wife for better or worse, sickness and in health, til death do us part. As my sweet wife and I continue on our journey, we must continually remind ourselves that God was not caught off guard by her diagnosis. He will remain faithful to us even when our plans and His plans seem to be worlds apart. Our hopes, dreams, and plans for the future have vanished. There is no more “normal”. Each day is different than the last, and sometimes each hour is different than the last. The caregiving strategy that worked this morning may not work this afternoon. The Apostle Paul referred to trials of this life as “momentary light affliction”. When we consider Paul’s resume, it includes beatings, being thrown in jail, stoned and left for dead, shipwrecked, snake bit, not to mention his concern for the churches he felt responsible for. Paul goes on to explain that the momentary light of this life is producing for us an eternal weight of glory. Like the spies, what we see does not always line up with God’s promises. We must choose if we are to believe what we see and feel, or are we going to cling to God’s promises. Trouble will come our way, yet God is not caught off guard. God is not surprised. We must remember that God is always faithful and keeps His promises. May we have the faithfulness that Joshua and Caleb exhibited, standing on the promises of God, to be willing to face the giants in our path based on faith and trust rather than circumstances. Then suddenly, after a period of time and lives have become quite busy, reality makes its presence known. It is happening to me. What do I do now? I thought I would never face this in my marriage. The divorce word has entered into our vocabulary. Where did we miss the clue that things were deteriorating in our relationship? One of the most influential factors involved in the destruction of marriages is the inability of spouses willingness to give to each other freely. The Bible contains the golden rule and numerous other directives concerning a giving spirit in relationships. So many times we accept these for other relationships and don’t apply them properly within our marriages. Our marriages should be the first relationship to which we apply these giving principles. What are some of the causes for us to shy away from giving 100% in our marriage? We allow blocks of bitterness and resentment to be stacked into a wall separating us from our spouse. Selfishness controls us, denying love’s true attributes from being demonstrated in our marriage. Vengeful behavior influences our relationship, allowing things to add up on our list of pay backs. In our insecurity and/or lack of trust, we hold each other entirely too tight to the line to walk by in our relationships. Past experiences have a huge influence on how much we allow our spouse freedom from the tight rope. Enough space is not given for forgiveness to function properly in our relationships therefore allowing dissension to destroy our ability to give to each other as we should. We fail to remember that we are not and never will be perfect spouses. We forget that we are all works in progress in God’s plan. Whatever the source is for your inability to give, your willingness and freedom to give to your spouse can be changed. As some would say, “Pull in your horns and say I’m sorry and start over.” Dare to give 100% to your spouse. There should never be a marriage where one spouse has to give 100% all the time. That doesn’t constitute a marriage. Many of are so worried about how much we will have to give and how many times we may have to give that we cannot allow our relationship to be fluid. A fluid relationship will be successful for a life time of gives and takes. The key factor is that we must be willing to give

100% of ourselves to our spouse. Some circumstances will require one spouse to give 70% and the other 30%, while another circumstance will require 60% and the other 40% of their ability to give. No two circumstances in life will require the same percentages of giving by either spouse. Remember that your spouse is loved by God. His love is the super glue that holds a marriage together, filled with a giving spirit from each spouse, for life. Again, worthy of repeating, we are not perfect spouses. Whatever the variations of giving your relationship requires of you to give, Remember that circumstances will change soon and will not last forever. It’s like, “This too shall soon pass.” Tomorrow is a new day. Joy and strength come in the morning and the one who loves you more than anyone could ever love you is the provider of your joy and

strength. Dare to give 100% of yourself. Adopt positive values toward your spouse. Develop a healthy respect for yourself and your spouse. Cultivate a loving and giving spirit in your relationship so the genuine attributes of love will bloom beautifully in your marriage. There isn’t any marriage exempt from the destruction resulting from spouses unwilling to give freely to each other in their relationship. A good marriage is the result of hard work. Work diligently and your reward will be a marriage filled with happiness and joy from a giving spirit.

A Choice of the Heart

ecently, I was asked to speak to a group of executives involved in leading senior living communities. The topic I was asked to present was focused on “What makes you different?” Every year, companies are building new communities, many with amenities that upstage their competitors. Senior Living Executives are coming into the industry with MBA’s, volunteer hours and senior living experience gained while in college. The industry as a whole is transforming itself into a thriving, vibrant and highly skilled one. Maya Angelou said it best, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Amenities and skill can never compensate for making people feel like they truly matter, and that is what makes a senior living community special. In Athens, Tennessee, Enlivant Senior Living owns a community that for many years has seen the wear and tear of years of service. During the past eight months, this community has undergone a transformation. The tarnished landscaping has been replaced and redesigned, and the inside has been revitalized with tasteful, timeless and classic design. This community is truly beautiful. Every time I visit this community whether it is for a site visit, to help with projects, decorate Christmas trees or meet with staff, the feeling I get as I walk through the front door is warm and inviting. Someone always greets me with a smile, and more times than not, the front door is opened for me, and I am called by my name. The staff seldom changes. The same smiling face of Mary Hyde, Resident Care Partner that has been there for twelve years, is still there each time I visit. The maternal hug of Linda Moore, the Clinical Services Manager for eighteen years, warms my heart, and I never have to ask about anything needing fixing, because if I do Danny, the maintenance director, responds with the same slow southern drawl, “I’m on it.” And when I am leaving, I am always walked to the door, and on every visit residents hug me and then stand on the front porch and wave as my car pulls out from the parking lot.

There are many homes I have visited in my travels that offer more amenities and programs than Athens Place, but very few make me feel like that boutique community in McMinn County, Tennessee. I have been inspired by the hospitality, invigorated by the smiles and encouraged that I too can offer the same to all who grace my own home. The internet, cyber reviews, and third party contractors have simplified shopping for senior living, but still the heart will frequently rule the mind when it comes to choices. Senior Living will always be a choice of the heart. It is a business, but to those selecting senior living options, it’s always about the people. I have

been blessed to know many people in the industry that still continue to look at senior living through the eyes of the heart, and focus on distinguishing themselves by making people feel like they matter. I am also reminded of Matthew 20:28, “Christ did not come to be served, but to serve.” Even if people do not remember your heart of serving, Jesus always will. When we invest in choices of the heart, we distinguish ourselves not just here on earth, but in the Kingdom.

The Mystery of the Rainbow

y father was in the Naval Air Force. He belonged to a unique division called “The Hurricane Squadron,” a group of pilots that flew prop planes into the eyes of hurricanes to take weather measurements (yes, they had “the right stuff”). I always admired the courage it must have taken to do something that daring. Many years ago, when I was just a child, we happened to be gazing at a rainbow and my dad blurted out, “When you get high enough in the atmosphere and look down on a rainbow, it’s not a semi-circle—it’s a complete circle.” That was a “Wow!” moment for me, and I thought about it often, especially when I witnessed one of those amazing ‘bridges of hope’ stretching across the sky. At first, I didn’t catch the biblical connection; it was just an intriguing marvel of nature. Once I entered into a relationship with God, though, the symbolism of this biblical emblem impacted me more. I realized a rainbow represents God’s promises. It all started with Noah. The global flood, foretold by God, had destroyed every living thing. Only Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark survived. After the waters subsided, Noah offered burnt offerings to God. The Creator responded by saying: “Behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you... It’s been thousands of years now, and God has kept His

word. The world has never been destroyed by water since— and never will. Simply because God promised. By the way, the point I made at the beginning—about the rainbow being a full circle—that speaks a powerful message. The upper semi-circle, visible from below, represents God’s spoken Word promises (found in the Bible or communicated to us personally). The lower semicircle, visible only from above, represents their fulfillment. Standing on the surface of this planet, we only see the upper arc (the promises) and often wonder if they will come to pass. From above, God sees both the upper and the lower bands (the promises and their fulfillment) as one and the same. Because what He says, He intends to do. In the last book of the Bible, John was lifted in the Spirit and saw an amazing confirmation of this truth. In his vision, he saw a door open in heaven, then he heard a voice calling him into God’s innermost chamber: “Behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald” (Revelation 4:2-3 NKJV). Did you catch that? The rainbow was not just over God’s throne; the rainbow was around God’s throne. So, from heaven’s perspective, God’s promises and their fulfillment are one and the same. he scripture above was originally written by the Apostle Paul to admonish Believers at the Church of Corinth to be watchful concerning their walk with God. This group lived in an area of the world that was fraught with all manner of hedonistic practices, many beyond comprehension or even description. Undoubtedly, the Corinthian converts assumed their newfound relationship with Jesus Christ and commitment to Him were sufficient to maintain unbroken communion. While they had correctly assumed both conditions were necessary to obtain eternal life and fellowship, they did not understand that procurement of those spiritual blessings was only the beginning, and not the conclusion, of a lifelong journey of faith. In a similar manner, many of today’s Christians see salvation as the end of their Christian experience. They become “saved and satisfied,” never to go any further in their walk with Jesus. Moreover, some even fall back into immorality and go so far as to participate in unseemly activities. In their minds, “real Christians don’t sin,” and since they consider themselves to be real, they conclude their behavior must also be acceptable. Lack of immediate consequences from the Divine often reinforces their misconception. They forget the scriptures say God is slow to anger (see Nahum 1:3). Most of the New Testament was written to genuine Believers to warn us that anyone can fall into sin, regardless of who we are. While I personally believe the Father always brings His wayward children home, even if it is mere moments before death, the reality is any of us can stray for a time, and it is during that time we run the risk of sowing bad seeds, resulting in a bad harvest later in life. In fact, I am convinced that many of God’s children lack because their yield of sin and self-deception have come to fruition, thereby engulfing much of their potential spiritual bounty. I cannot stress enough the importance of an honest appraisal of our own lives. Regular spiritual inventories and closet cleanings are needed in the household of God to remove the junk that has accumulated and avoid the negative consequences it brings. Until we make room for God, He cannot fill us. Instead, we run the risk of destruction and despair reigning within our own lives, just as it did with the children of Israel. When Life Gives You Lemons

ebruary is heralded as the “Month of Love.” But what is love? Is it the gushy, giddy feeling inside a young man or woman as they stand to recite their marriage vows, or is there more to it? Life sometimes hands us lemons, and we don’t feel those warm, loving feelings welling up inside of us. What do we do then? We choose to love. Lemon Cookies Ingredients Paul told the Corinthians that love was 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened more important than faith or hope, and that without it, their works meant nothing. To 3/4 cup Sucanat, or other raw sugar clarify this “love” that he was talking about, he then proceeded to tell them what love was: 1 egg yolk “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not 1 large lemon, zest finely grated (or 1.5 tsp) dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1.25 cup freshly milled soft white wheat flour Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with (or 1 cup all-purpose flour) the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love 1/4 tsp salt never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8). Substitute your name for “love.” Do verses 4-8 describe you? Are they bang-on, way off the mark, or somewhere in between? Sometimes we don’t feel like being patient, but we can choose to be patient. We may not want to be kind, but we can choose to be kind. And so on down the list. The more you choose to be what love is, the easier it is to be what love is—the easier it is to love. So when life hands you lemons, choose to love in spite of your circumstances—and make some lemon cookies!.

Directions ◊ Preheat the oven to 350°F. ◊ In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugar on high speed with an electric mixer until it is light and fluffy). ◊ Add the egg yolk, zest, and extract. Mix well. ◊ Add flour and salt. Blend with the mixer on low speed until the dry ingredients are moistened, and it forms a thick, smooth batter. ◊ Drop heaping teaspoons of dough 2” apart onto an ungreased baking sheet. Yields 18 cookies.

◊ After they have cooled for 5 minutes, transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy!

A Great Shaking Is Occurring in Our Land ever before has our great nation been so divided, suffered so many frequent natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, fires), terrorist threats, and recent attacks (for example the Las Vegas shooting in October of 2017, the ISIS-related truck attack on pedestrians in Manhattan also in October, and then in November, the church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, just to name a few). Concerning the church shooting in Texas, how anyone could purposely and methodically walk up and down church aisles and shoot not only defenseless adults, but innocent little children is beyond my comprehension. Yet, the devil is a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, and unfortunately, he uses people to carry out his evil deeds. Surely, as Jesus cast out many demons in His day, it is frightening to think of how many demonpossessed people walk the earth now. All of man’s feeble attempts at preparation and protection can never completely combat against the evil in this world, because... we wrestle not against flesh and blood. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” —Ephesians 6:10-13 People are angry, frightened, and unfortunately, very divided in America. Much of this division is exacerbated by our news media, Hollywood, and self-serving politicians. Our only hope, protection, and peace comes from time well-spent on our knees, crying out to a benevolent and holy God. When we allow ourselves to enter into a daily, intimate relationship with our Lord, we come to trust and believe that He certainly does hold the whole world in His Hands. Nothing happens that He is not aware of, nothing takes Him by surprise. He continues, as time pasts, to sit

upon His Holy throne. He turns the heads of kings and princes, He raises up, and tears down kingdoms, according to His plan and purpose. As believers in Jesus, we need to be His hands, and feet, but mostly, His heart. We live in a society that has

become self-centered and self-entitled The world may live this way, but as Jesus’ disciples, we are to turn our hearts outward, away from self. We are to overcome the world, (the flesh “self”), and the devil. I truly believe our great God would move His mighty hand across our nation and bring great healing and salvation if His Church would humbly come before Him and repent. Not only would many souls be saved, but many broken Christians would be rejuvenated and restored. It needs to start somewhere, so why not individually? By family? By church? Perhaps we could overcome hatred with love. Maybe, just maybe, the love of Christ in us and through us would spread across this once great nation, and truly make America great again, not by any man nor politician, but by the loving, forgiving, Lord Jesus Christ. Persecution and perseverance are often-times very painful, but we must remember that we are never alone; He abides in us and through us! “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Watching God

n the month of February, it just seems natural to think about what it means to really love someone. As Christians, we know that our Savior is the greatest example of love that the world has ever seen or experienced. As I pondered that, I began to think about my own journey of love with my husband, of almost 34 years and decided to talk to the ladies that read this article. I want to talk about a particular part of my love journey and what the Lord has taught me. Glenn and I were married many years before he became a Christian. I became a Christian about 6 years after we were married, and I served the Lord faithfully and went to church for many years alone. When you decide that you are going to put Jesus first place in your life, you can be sure you will begin to see change take place in your home and your family!

God taught me many things during those years that my husband had not accepted Jesus as Savior yet. He taught me how to love my unsaved husband, and let him see Jesus in me, as I learned and grew in studying the Word of the Lord. Many times I would see the things that God would do in Glenn and I would just kind of laugh to myself and to the Lord. Glenn would tell me about inviting his friends to come and go to church with

his wife on Sunday, because “they need to go!” I could hardly hold the laughter inside when he told me this because, there he was witnessing for the Lord, and he didn’t even know it! God was gradually changing my husband over the years, as I just continued to love, respect, and pray for him. I never badgered or nagged Glenn about going to church with me. I never told him that he needed to change because I didn’t feel I had the right to tell him to change when I had married him just like he was. I had been the same lost sinner that he was when I married him, and now I had become a new creation in Jesus. I just needed to pray and watch God work. I remember one time I was talking and “fussing” to the Lord about how I couldn’t see as much change in Glenn as I thought I should. He was still saying ugly words, and on and on I babbled until the Lord stopped me in my tracks with scripture that I had to go home and look up. He said, “Don’t judge another man’s servant.” It is up to Him if Glenn stands or falls, and He will make him stand. He told me He was not offended by Glenn’s ugly words, that Peter had denied Him with his words, and that He knew what Peter would become! He told me my job was to pray for my husband, and He would do the rest. So, that’s what I did, after I repented of my judgmental attitude, I viewed Glenn as God’s servant, not mine, and it released me of feeling responsible for Glenn’s walk with the Lord. I could rest in what God was doing! God is the one who gave us marriage and family and He wants them to work a whole lot more than we do! Our job is to “pray, love, and never give up.” About The Author

Passing the Torch To the Next Generation by Kelly McDonald Jr.

n the Bible, we can find a pattern of the older generation passing the torch down to the younger generation. Moses guided the nation of Israel, but Joshua was being prepared to take them into the Promise Land. Elijah was the leading prophet to the nation of Israel, but Elisha was being trained to take his place. As Paul preached the gospel, he had spiritual sons such as Timothy and Titus that he groomed to continue the work of God after he passed away. As older church leaders either step down or pass away, it is important that there are others who can step up to fill these roles. I encourage everyone reading this article to pass on your understanding of the Word of God to younger believers. If possible, pass it on to individuals from multiple age groups: teens, twenties, thirties, forties, and even fifties. You may only be able to find one other person to mentor, and they may not be that much younger than you. You may already have someone in mind for this, but you can also find people in church that you may not know very well. Moreover, you may want to impart wisdom to people far away. Keep in touch with them over social media or conduct conversations via phone or Skype. You could also write down your personal life experiences with God to leave a history for the next generation. Note different ways you honored God and ways He helped you endure tough times. How did you deal with the

persecution from friends, family, and co-workers? What Bible verses, encouraging stories, or Christian literature helped you to stay strong? The goal is to prepare leaders and strengthen those that come behind us. I also encourage churches and other organizations to include younger people on their board or other decision making bodies. In Joel 2:28-32, we are told that younger men have visions and older men have dreams. Younger people are always thinking about the future. They have hopes, aspirations, and drive. Older people consider times past, but have much wisdom from their experiences. Try to bring these two sides together in a way that can generate vision, but anchor that vision with sound counsel. This will allow younger people to stay interested in the day-to-day operations of churches and businesses, but at the same time, keep them grounded. It is another way to prepare leaders for the next generation. As Elijah was taken to Heaven, he left the mantle to Elisha (2 Kings 2:1-13). However, Elisha did not leave the mantle to anyone else before he died. I encourage you today to find a way to pass the torch to the next generation. About The Author

wenty seven years ago my husband and I, along with our two young sons, took an adventure that would lead us to the “Simple Life.” After moving to our beloved city of Athens, we lived in the “city” and we loved it. The closeness of the grocery stores, drug stores, restaurants, and school made life easy. We had grown attached to taking only 5 minutes to be wherever we wanted to go. We were blessed to live in a small town we loved; it was home. One day, during the routine of our life, a big adventure landed right in our laps. We had the opportunity to move to the country! Not just the country, but the home place of my paternal grandparents. It was a small farmhouse where they had raised 9 children in this 2 bedroom house. As we began to think this option over we kept thinking “the house is so little.” The house we owned in the city had much more, I mean much more space. The country house had more land, and more quiet secluded spaces. It offered space for dogs, cats, goats and sheep. It came with the opportunity to tear down walls, add closets, and much more. We told ourselves we could give our boys the life of living where land, dirt, frogs, and bugs were plenteous. It also meant an opportunity to keep the homestead of my grandparents alive for a while longer. So we gathered our things and took the leap into the country! After being there for a while and with the help of my dad, we renovated this little house into our home. I found myself envisioning my grandmother raising her brood in this house. Times were hard but she lovingly made it a home for her family. My mind was flooded with memories of my granddaddy as he swept the floor each night. When I

would spend the night he always let me help him sweep. I can hear him saying, “I’ll sweep it first then you can sweep after me to make sure we get it clean.” I began cherishing the little things in the house like the mantle with numerous nail holes. These nails held my grandmother’s baby diapers as they dried by the fire. I also began to cherish the quietness, the land and house where my grandparents had walked and worked and carved out a life. I began to cherish the simplicity that country living brought to us. Sure it took longer to get to town or school or church, but I found that through the memories of my grandparents in this little house they still were having an impact on my life and the life of my children. God’s word reminds us of the beauty of simplicity. Psalms 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” His word also reminds us of the simplicity of childlike faith. Luke 18:16 says, “Permit the children to come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” I am so thankful for the gift God gave my family, the gift of discovering simplicity of life. I cherish this place I call home. I find great joy in taking care of what my grandparents began. I also delight in the blessing of God as He allowed my family the joy of experiencing the simple life. The legacy of my grandparents is alive and well and touches my life every day. About The Author
