lang, clang, CLANG! My friend doesn’t like loud noises! She cringes at the noise. Her hands cover her ears. Her face says it all. Sometimes she goes all the way into another room. CLANG! Is that the way the world looks at us, when we are noisy and not showing love? God says love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Does God only hear my noise or does He see me loving others like He does? God’s word says, if I don’t have love, I have nothing. Nothing! Even if I speak like an angel and I give all I have away to the poor for Jesus’s sake, I still have nothing without love. Our world seems to be really noisy right now! People saying, “Look at me”, “Look what I did”. Clang, clang, CLANG! This is not how Jesus walked on this earth. He loved, and he loved us all! He was not noisy; He came quietly into our world and turned it upside down with His love on the cross. He took our sins upon Him. He did not say, “Look at me.” He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” He

healed the sick, talked to, and touched people that no one wanted to be near. Who does Jesus want me to love? Who does He want me to sit next to at lunch? Who does He want me to be nice to, even if they are not nice to me? I was challenged in college to pray for who I need to sit by. By doing this, I became friends with people I might never have met. Who does God have planned for me to talk to today? Who needs a smile? It just might change a life. I have another friend that can’t hear well. If he is missing my noisy cymbals, can he see God’s love in me? Does he see that God will always protect him by my example of love? Does he see that God always loves? Am I showing him that Jesus died just for him? I must show love so that others can see Jesus! During this season of love, I don’t want to be noisy. I want to be quiet and show love! I don’t want to be a gong or a cymbal, I want to whisper, “Hey you, God loves you so much He died for you! He is so patient with you. He is so kind. He always protects us. You can always find hope in God!”

The Big Why MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

hen we say we “need money,” that’s not exactly true. Money is just paper, or coin, or digits on our computer screen, and that doesn’t really do us any good. It’s only what we can do with the money that matters. That’s what we really want—to pay bills, make purchases, or donate to a worthy cause. Many of us recently made New Year’s resolutions, and these are typically vague notions such as “save more money,” “get out of debt,” “give more this year.” We’re much more likely to stick to our “resolutions” if they are specific, timeoriented, and measurable. So instead of “save more money,” try something like “have $100 per month automatically deducted from my paycheck and deposited into my savings account by the 15th of every month.” This goal is easy to track to see if you’re really sticking to it. Instead of, “get out of debt,” try something like “pay off my Visa credit card in full by the last day of March, and then start making double car payments each month from April through the end of November.” Instead of “give more money to worthy causes,” try something like “start tithing ten percent to my local church starting on the first of next month” or “donate at least two hundred dollars to these two charities in 2019.” In order to actually follow through on these resolutions—and to make meaningful progress with your finances, it’s crucial to know the “Big Why”—why do you want financial security? What does that really mean for you? What does it look like and how will you know if you’ve achieved financial security? These questions are the absolute starting point for financial management because if you don’t know where you’re going or why you

want to get there, you never will. For married couples, knowing “our Big Why” is imperative. Couples should sit down together and brainstorm (yes, actually write down your ideas) what their “ideal future” looks like: is it to travel to other countries regularly? Send the kids to private schools? Establish scholarships at your alma mater? Provide clean water for needy villages? Buy a ski boat? Build a rustic lodge in the mountains? Pay for home health care for an aging parent? Couples should share their honest answers to this question: “If I/we had enough money to do anything, what would we want our life to look like?” Couples need to discuss this early and often, to stay motivated on the journey to financial security. This is especially true of the “reluctant spouse” who resists the idea of a “budget” and thinks buying consumer goods every month is “more fun” than seeing growing balances in savings and investment accounts. Once everyone agrees on the “Big Why,” it’s now clear what the end goal is. Next, you can implement a plan for how much money it will take to achieve those goals, and then map out the steps to make these goals a reality. For single folks, you don’t get off the hook. You also need to write down the answers to these questions in order to know your “Big Why.” Discuss your plans with a trusted friend, relative or mentor, and start to map out what you’ll need to do financially in order to achieve your goals. Too often, our New Year’s resolutions put the proverbial “cart before the horse.” Before listing action steps, take time to know why you’re wanting to take these actions in the first place. Once you know this, you’ll have motivation to take action.

The Best Things

ecently, two men whom I knew since my childhood passed away each within a short amount of time. Both men were military veterans who were buried with military honors. They were well known, highly thought of, and very active in the community. They were blessed with large families and well deserved good names. They will be missed because there are many who have been affected in a very positive way by these two men. How I knew them is that I grew up in a small church that both of these men attended weekly for many

years. Even with our mutual attendance, I never knew that both men served in the military, that one or the other were in civic clubs, once served the community as locally elected officials, had college degrees, or even founded civic organizations. I only learned these things about them after reading their obituaries, not that I was surprised that they had achieved or did so much. And I am sure that if they or someone else had told these things about them to me as a child or youth, I would have long since forgotten these facts since I felt that their achievements or activities were not the most remarkable thing about them. The most remarkable thing about these men is that they genuinely cared about people, and everyone knew it.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that sometimes you cannot fully appreciate some of the ways that these men genuinely cared until you have experienced the bad things in life. Sometimes a handshake does not feel as welcoming nor does a smile seem as friendly as when given to you after experiencing a week full of loneliness or rejection. Sometimes home cooked beans eaten in the break room of a funeral home are not as filling as when they are eaten while suffering the loss of a loved one. Sometimes a laugh or a chuckle given at the sight of a clown in a parade does not seem as cathartic until you have been sad about your circumstances. Sometimes, strength of character is difficult to define, until you witness someone exercise restraint after the wrongful loss of a child. Dignity is a quality that can be difficult to define until you have seen someone face insurmountable odds with dignity in a battle with cancer. All of these qualities are what I remember about these two men. As any dad would, I want my children to have the best things possible in life. Sometimes it is easy to confuse what the “best things” actually are. Things such as toys, education, and technology are good things, but we must never confuse them with what actually are the best things. I believe that some of the best things in life are the qualities these men demonstrated because of their effect on others. I also believe that these men looked to their Lord and Savior as the best example. As parents, we can too, and we can strive and pray for an ever increasing amount of the qualities found in Luke 2:52 in ourselves and our kids. Luke 2:52 says, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people” (HCSB). May God bless our children, as well as ourselves, in this way. About The Author

ou're a teenager, so I'm guessing at some point you've played a video game. Console, pc, mobile, it really doesn't matter because they all have something in common that gamers get frustrated with at some point and time and that's the game over. The game over says that you failed to accomplish a task and have no more lives. Perhaps it was that Mario couldn't save Peach, Link couldn't save Zelda, Spider-Man couldn't save MJ. Whatever it is, a game over can make any sane person turn beat red and want to throw their control through a window sometimes. What if we were to look at the game over from a different perspective though? Is it possible for a game over to be a good thing? How about a spiritual game over? Let me explain: In today's society there is so much stuff out there that consumes our time. Games, TV, social media, social life, extracurricular activities, and so on. If we don't keep our priorities straight, any number of those things can take away from the thing where we need to spend the most time and that is our relationship with God. I'll be the 1st to tell you that there have been times in my life when I've let some of those things take up more of my time than spending time with God. Jesus told us in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. That means we put God above all else in our lives. This is where we apply the game over. In this case it doesn't mean we failed or ran out of lives it means we decide to take time to put down our phones and tablets, we close our laptops, we turn the TV off, and we spend that

time with God. We pray, praise and worship Him, and simply give Him what He wants and that's us, all of us. I'm reminded of a song lyric from one of my favorite Christian artists growing up that said wimpy saints won't survive in spiritual warfare. This is so true. We choose to play games in life and before we know it satan has sucked the life right out of our of our spirits. We give into temptation more easily and for some it can lead to that road that Jesus talked about in Matthew 7:13. He said it is broad and leads to destruction. He even said there are many who find this road. In verse 14 he talks about a different road, a narrow road that leads to life and few there are that find it. Many find the broad road and why not? It's easy. You can be lazy and it takes 0 effort. The narrow road though takes hard work. You have to constantly crucify your flesh and keep it under submission. I don't know about you, but I would much rather choose the road that is narrow but leads to life than the one that is wide and leads to destruction. Will it be easy all the time? I'm afraid not. There is no scripture that tells us that but there are plenty that say He will always be with us. He'll never leave you or forsake you. He will hold you in His right hand! So will you join me young man or young lady? Will you join me as we continue through this new year and say game over? Will you join me in putting God 1st like never before and see where He takes us? You're not on this journey alone! God's got you! It's time to tell satan, game over! About The Author

Togetherness – Becoming One

ust when you fellas begin to relax (in the aftermath of Christmas), lean back in your recliners, and immerse yourselves in the football season and playoffs, Valentine’s Day peeks its head just above the horizon and the possibility of more Hallmark Movies becomes a reality! You know she’ll want you to watch them with her, so you sacrifice your own desires and spend that time with her, together. Karen Carpenter made famous the beautiful song, “It’s Only Begun,” with these words: Sharing horizons that are new to us; Watching the signs along the way; Talkin' it over, just the two of us; Workin' together day to day; Together. And when the evening comes, we smile. So much of life ahead, We’ve only just begun. A friend and I were talking recently about “calling,” that unction, nudge, strong urge a person feels from God to pursue a certain path in life. We talked about how important it is for a husband and wife to be together in those decisions; otherwise, it would be very difficult for one to pursue a vocation, ministry, or life’s work alone, without the support of the spouse. When my husband and I were traveling in evangelistic ministry, we were at a church where a dedicated pastor was leading what had been a thriving congregation. The pastor’s wife was not supportive of her husband’s ministry and did not even attend the church services. The effects of

that “un-togetherness” in their marriage could be felt and seen in the congregation. It was sad to experience as a visitor, and no doubt even sadder to be continually in the presence of the disharmony. In a marriage, I firmly believe that if God gives one a dream, a passion, a calling; He will also work with the spouse to be supportive, engaging, and helpful in fulfilling it. Togetherness is far more than romance. It is sharing each other’s hopes and dreams. It’s sticking together when circumstances would try to pull us apart. The prophet Amos asked this question: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). During the summer of my junior year, my parents dropped me off at our church youth camp a few hours earlier than registration. A young man from over 200 miles away also had to be dropped off at camp early. The camp director put the two of us to work helping her prepare for the opening banquet night. The decorations were built around an Indian theme, so Joseph Bathe and I gathered sticks from around the campground and made Indian teepees for the table centerpieces. Little did I know as a teenager in youth camp that the handsome, sensitive, sweet, shy, and quiet boy that I met there would one day become the man of my dreams. I could not know then that God would call him into ministry and would entwine his heart and mine together as partners in His harvest. We have traveled this journey together with its ups and downs, its successes and failures, its stresses and its joys. I am proud to be his life-long companion and to have served side by side with him in ministry through the bad times and glad times, through all the trials, miles, and smiles. But we could not have done it if we hadn’t been in it together. One day, this joint journey we’ve made on earth will end and we will be together in heaven. Someone once said, “If there is no marriage in heaven, my spouse is sure going to be my best buddy!” My friends, the important thing is to be best buddies in your marriage here and now! And when life’s sun sets, you’ll be together once again.

It has been said that “Music is what feelings sound like.” Hans Christian Anderson said “Where words fail, music speaks.” Longfellow said “Music is the universal language of mankind.” I was given the gift of piano lessons by my parents, had the opportunity for some music training in college, and had godly ministers of music in my life through my church; all these opened the door to music for me. Today music is an indispensable part of my life. I feel the presence of God through music as it gives words to my feelings and emotions. It enters into my worship and praise for my Savior. Music relieves the stresses of life and helps express love and admiration for those dear to me. As I sing the HymnsCompositions written directly to God, the songs of the Psalms, and the spiritual songs about the Christian life, I am once again reminded of all God has blessed me with. One of my favorite ways of enjoying music is with children, especially preschoolers. They express music with their whole being! They are honest and uninhibited in their joy and expression of music. A preschooler who senses the wonder of their surroundings, of God’s creation, and expresses their feelings about God through music is worshipping! A recent experience that drew me into worship of my Savior took place in my own family room. My three preschool grandsons were visiting and were playing with Legos when out of the blue Brody begin to sing the chorus of “Lord, I need You” and his twin brothers fell into step singing along. As I listened to those little voices singing “Lord, I need You, Oh I need You, Every

hour I need You, My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, How I need You,” I felt the presence of God as He tugged at my heart for me to take a moment to express that very thought back to Him. That sweet refrain from little voices fostered a moment of worship in my heart that crescendoed throughout the day. My soul was calmed and I was reminded of the power of music to speak to the soul all while engaging in the simplest tasks of the day.

As you go through your day embrace music, let God speak to you, let your voice give Him praise and thanksgiving for all He has done and is doing for you. 1 Chronicles 16:9 says, “Sing to Him, sing praise to Him, tell of all His wonderful acts.” Johann Sebastian Bach said it best, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” Let music express the thoughts of your heart today!

Spicy Thai Chicken and Noodles by Deanna Key

Ingredients

Instructions

• 1 - 2 boneless chicken breasts

1. Chop garnish items and set aside

• 1 lb linguine pasta (or fettuccine, spaghetti, etc.)

2. Cut chicken into strips and cook in the skillet with a little bit of oil until done and set aside.

• ½ - 1½ Tbsp. red pepper flakes (amount depends on how spicy you want it)

3. Boil pasta and drain.

• 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil • 1/3 - 1/2 cup sesame oil • 1½ Tsp. chili paste • 6 Tbsp. soy sauce

4. While the pasta is boiling heat the oils in a large skillet and add the red pepper flakes. 5. Once the oil is hot strain the red pepper flakes and reserve the oil in a bowl. Add the reserved oil back into the skillet and add the chili paste. Whisk in your soy sauce and honey.

• 6 Tbsp. honey

6. Toss your pasta and chicken in the sauce and coat well.

• Scallions, peanuts, cilantro and sesame seeds for garnish

7. Can be served hot, room temperature, or even cold. Top with your garnishes and enjoy!

It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way f we don’t open up a way to process our disappointments, we’ll be tempted to let Satan rewrite God’s love story as a negative narrative, leaving us more than slightly suspicious of our Creator. I really enjoyed reading this paragraph because my mind went to those people that have disappointed me, and I remember that I harbored those disappointments for so long. I would call them silent attacks because when we bury negative thoughts those words sink deep in our souls. Then we start to believe the lies and not the promises of God. We start to question God in the process instead of trusting His narrative.

To wrestle well means acknowledging my feelings but moving forward, letting my faith lead the way. This is probably really hard to understand. When I read this sentence in the book I was reminded that we wrestle with God not against God. When we wrestle with God He shows us his faithfulness in the process. When we wrestle against God, we tend to question the process of our life and become stuck and not able to move forward. Wrestle with God from faith to faith. I know I must walk through God’s process before I see His fulfilled promise. This is the hardest thing to do! If you find this easy then I question if you are truly suffering for Christ. Going through the process is painful because God’s promises are not easy and they take work. I think of the process of the cross. Jesus knew that he would die and be raised again in three days but did that make the process any easier. Absolutely not! So, endure the painful process, embrace the setbacks, wrestle with God through the process, but never give up on His promises. Lysa has an incredible story and this book is written from the heart. She shares about her journey and it is encouraging but also painful. This book will take you through the process of what to do when life is full of disappointments. This book was a great reminder of how God is always at work but we have to be willing to work through the process. Read or listen to Lysa’s story if you have not read or heard it before.

Leave! n Matthew chapter 9, Jesus demonstrates divine authority over humanity with the story of first healing a societal outcast and second, healing the young daughter of a prominent leader. In this same chapter the reader is reminded that Jesus heals, calls us to be disciples, teaches, restores, and commands believers and non-believers to come into alignment with His Kingdom purposes. This alignment of humanity with a divine Kingdom requires that humanity submits to divine authority. An interesting point in this parable is that while on his way to heal the apparently deceased daughter, Jesus was interrupted by a desperate woman. This woman (who was considered unclean) pushed through the crowd to get close to Jesus. Finally, she was able to touch his outer robe resulting in Jesus responding to her by immediately healing her. She had a personal encounter with Jesus. Perhaps, this delay caused Jesus to arrive at the leader’s house later than anticipated. Evident by the mourners and flute players already in position to lament. When Jesus arrived, He looked in the face of death and said to the crowd “leave.” The crowd’s immediate response was laughter and mockery. But according to Matthew 9:25, the crowd was put outside and Jesus took the young girl by the hand and she got up. She had a personal encounter with Jesus. Recently, I read through Matthew 9 with the intent to see what the crowd did not see. I wanted to know

what this passage teaches about faith and action. Here are a few thoughts on these two separate but lifealtering encounters with the Messiah. Personal Faith Being an outcast has to be a difficult experience. Leftovers become your portion. Rejection becomes the norm. Crowds push you out. Hope is a reality but seems it’s only for others. Life is usually lived down in the gutter always looking up but unable to walk upright. But, for the desperate, all it takes is the willingness to push past the norms to the promise. Faith for Others I know as a father and grandfather that the worst pain is the pain that your children and grandchildren experience—that you can’t fix. This must have been the case for the father of this young girl. This dad, a community leader, demonstrated humility and desperation when he asked Jesus to come to his house to heal his daughter. It seems to me that everyone fits in one of these two categories at some point. Either you are desperate or you need someone else to be desperate for you. In either case, the one-word command of the Messiah in Matthew 9:24 “Leave” is a good proclamation for everyone to say to the enemy of our souls. Humanity and spirits of darkness both have to submit to divine authority when we act on our faith. About The Author

he iPhone was introduced 12 years ago in January. It’s tough to think of any device that has revolutionized so many areas of our lives in such a short period of time. So much of our time revolves around these machines. For some of us, it’s hard to break away; it’s hard to keep it out of our hand or pocket. Next time you’re in a meeting, look at how many phones are sitting on the table. Think you and your family aren’t guilty? Ask yourself these questions: is your phone the last thing you look at before bed? Or the first thing you look at when you wake up? Do your kids have to ask you questions 2-3-4 times because you’re on your phone? Do your kids miss things you’re saying because they’re on their phones? If so, how do we “Fight the Phone?” I’ve found a few ways to swing the pendulum back, to achieve some balance in my technology consumption. 1. Make a phone basket when you’re with people. I do this in my high school classroom. When class starts everyone puts their phone in a basket, which I keep until the end of class. It’s not about being a grouchy teacher, it’s about being present so you can learn. Same goes at the dinner table, or during family time, if it’s not in your reach, you will be more focused on people. 2. Charge your phone outside your bedroom. I particularly encourage this one if you, like me, have a hard time disconnecting from work. When my phone is on my bedside table, I read it every time it buzzes. Every email, text, Slack message, GroupMe message, and the list goes on, gets the wheels turning, sometimes at 11pm or 6am when I should be resting or spending time with my family. I started charging my phone out of sight and ear-shot and it has been helpful. 3. Reconsider your social media accounts. A few months ago I was using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Admittedly I don’t like social media all that much, but it is nice to keep up with a few friends and family. I decided that Facebook in particular provided very little positive impact in my life. I deactivated my account, and have really enjoyed the break.

4. Rearrange the apps on your phone. One of my college students recommended this last semester and I love the idea. Find yourself mindlessly looking at your phone too often? Rearrange the apps on your phone. Move social media apps to a different page, create different folders. Then when you inevitably click on the wrong place, you get a reminder that you’re going back to the habit instead of doing something more productive. 5. Increase your security measures. Phone safety and security are an entirely different conversation, but it’s worth mentioning. If temptation is an issue

for you or your family, put safeguards in place. Use a monitoring software, there are several good ones, my family uses Covenant Eyes and it has been a great tool. Also, frequently change the WiFi password in your house, forcing your kids to come to you for Internet access. This builds in a natural opportunity to challenge the amount of time they’re spending online and what they’re looking at. Ultimately, this requires intentionality! If we are going to fight the urge to be on our phones constantly, we have to purposefully put safeguards into place to prevent us from going back. love holidays! I think it's good to have them. I believe they are necessary. As we approach a new month, in our minds, we start to think, what is happening in our lives for that time. The first thing that triggers in our thoughts is the holidays. We mentally go through the monthly calendar and try to recollect what holiday is coming up, which leads us to scheduling our time with plans, activities, and events around these days. When we ponder about the month of February, immediately what comes to mind is Valentine's Day. Valentine’s Day and February go hand in hand. We start to make a mental list of ideas of gifts to buy and things to do for people we love. Valentine's Day is a day to remind us to love. I have heard some people go on to say that Valentine's Day is just a Hallmark Day, to make money. That could be very well true, but I also think it's a day that needs to keep us in the flow of love. Life can move quickly and people can get so consumed with the cares of the world. It's very easy to get negligent and passive in showing our love. Valentine's Day is a great way to helping people stay focused on what really matters in life. Some may have a difficult time expressing their love or affection for others and this holiday is a tool used to learn what and how others display their love. However, love doesn't start in February; it’s just a continuation and a transition from one holiday in December called Christmas to another holiday in February. Christmas also emphasizes love. As we

remember all the activities and events from two months ago, we are reminded of what the original theme of that holiday is: God's love. “For God so loved the world, He gave his only gotten son” (John 3:16). From Christmas to February, we are reminded of the wide range of love, starting with Gods love for us and continuing with our love for others. Holidays are good prompters to help us to follow the word of God. Somewhere in our mind, we transition our thought process from receiving God's love to responding with God’s love to others. Let's just think, for a minute, what it would be like if we didn’t have any holidays to celebrate? That could be a scary thought. Yes, we could save a lot of money, but how would it be for your well-being as a person? That, to me, would be a very selfish and boring life and could lead to some serious consequences to our society. So, take the opportunity this February to celebrate a holiday that encourages love, to share your love, but not just for the easy people in your life. I challenge you to also use this holiday to love those that are unloving, the hardest kind of love. John 13:34-35 says, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
