100,000,000,000. This number is 100 billion. That is a very, very large number. Think of it this way, if you could spend $100,000 every day for the next 2,740 years, not only would you be the oldest person to have ever lived, but that’s how long it would take to spend 100 billion dollars. Wow. If your mind isn’t blown away yet… get ready!

We live in the Milky Way Galaxy. When you look up into the night sky, you’re actually staring straight into the Milky Way. Isn’t it beautiful? Our galaxy is the home of

approximately 100 billion stars. Some of these stars are similar in size to our sun, while others are bigger and some much smaller. Astronomers (a fancy name for those who study all kinds of things in space) suggest that there are 200 billion galaxies in the entire universe. Let’s say each galaxy has the same number of stars found in the Milky Way…well that’s more stars than we can count on our fingers and you’re going to need a huge calculator to see how big that number is. Crazy! It’s amazing! All those stars floating in the velvet night sky. It just goes on forever. 8 // February 2022

It doesn’t stop there. In Psalm 33:6, a shepherd boy named David wrote this, “The heavens were made by the Word of the Lord. All the stars were made by the breath of His mouth.” David spent a lot of time outdoors in the pasture tending his father’s sheep. He had a lot of time to look up and count the stars. Did you read what he said, “…all the stars were made by the breath of His mouth.” David is talking about God and how God breathes out stars from His mouth. It’s a bit weird to think about, but it shows how mighty, creative, and awesome the God we serve is. All those stars, created by God and given the sole purpose of reflecting the goodness of God. But it doesn’t stop there! Here it is. Are you ready for it? This is the big moment I’ve been waiting for this whole time. In Genesis 2:7 it says, “Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.” Here we have it. God makes humans. How did He do it? Read that passage in Genesis again. Amazing, isn’t it?!

God’s breath not only makes stars in the universe, but that same breath gives us life. Every time you look up in the night sky, think about who put those stars there. Every time you breathe in and out, think about who put that breath there. God is full of life. God is full of creativity and wonder. He is amazing!
