How To Improve Your

Happy Meter By Pastor Larry Cockerham Living Word Church

H

ow’s your “Happy Meter” right now? Well, you might say, if it depends on ... My bank account ... My marriage. ... My family ... My weight ... My grades in school ... My job ... My income level ... My friends, etc. etc. etc. It seems like a thousand things can affect your “Happy Meter.” If you depend upon the circumstances, happiness can go up and down. But I want to tell you a way to set your “Happy Meter” that doesn’t depend upon circumstances. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7) Whoever wrote that sounds like his “happy meter” was pretty high. He must have been having a really good day. His team must have won. His wife must have made a special dessert for him. Things must have been going pretty well. No, this man was Paul. He was locked up in prison. He was on death row, facing execution any day. Yet he says, “Rejoice!” Then he tells us how to do it.

(1) Stop worrying.

The English word for “worry” comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word which means “to strangle.” This is an apt description of the emotional pain we feel when we worry. When we worry, our thinking is strangled, our mind is strangled, our peace is strangled and our faith is strangled. We need to remove the stranglehold of worry from our minds. One study that explains why we shouldn’t allow worry to rule our lives: -- 60% of our worries are totally unfounded; -- 20% are already behind us; -- 10% are so petty they don’t make any difference; -- 4-5% of the remaining 10% are real, but we can’t do anything about them. That means that less than 5% are real threats. We need to spend our energy doing something about those things rather than wasting our time worrying about everything else.

(2) Pray about everything.

Prayer opens the doors of heaven, lets us hear the voice of God and releases the supernatural power of God in our lives. Begin your day every day in the presence of God. Praying every day can actually change some things in your situation, but even if everything doesn’t improve, you’ll always find joy in the presence of God.

6

January 2014

(3)In everything, give thanks.

Developing a thankful attitude can improve your life in many ways. Focus on things you are grateful for rather than things that irk the daylights out of you. And, you can always find something to be thankful for. Listen to praise and worship music. Sing praise all you can. Fill your house with praise. Fill your car with praise. Fill your life with praise. Let me give you a another little tip for developing a thankful attitude. Spend time with grateful people, and avoid the mulligrubbers, nay-sayers and grouches. Avoid complainers and most of all, avoid complaining. Have you ever thought that complaining people might not be complaining because they have so many problems, but they have so many problems because they are constantly complaining? Can complaining make anything better? Complaining makes you miserable ... along with everyone around you. Psalm 77:3 says, “I complained and my spirit was overwhelmed.”

(4) Live in the peace of God.

Most people have locks on their doors, and many have security systems. Let me tell you about a great “security system” for your life. That same death-row man I quoted earlier said, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:7 My “security system” is the Peace of God. It stands at the entryway of my life, guarding my heart and my mind. Some times we just need to put things into perspective. Let me illustrate with a story. A young woman wrote her mother from college: "Dear Mom: Sorry I haven’t written sooner. My arm really has been broken. I broke it, and my left leg too, when I jumped from the second floor of my dormitory ... when we had the fire. We were lucky. A young service station attendant saw the blaze and called the Fire Department. They were there in minutes. I was in the hospital for a few days. Paul, the service station attendant, came to see me every day. And because it was taking so long to get our dormitory livable again, I moved in with him. He has been so nice. I must admit that I am pregnant. Paul and I plan to get married just as soon as he can get a divorce. I hope things are fine at home. I’m doing fine, and will write more when I get the chance. Love, Your daughter, Susie.” P.S. Mom, none of the above is true. But I did get a "C" in Sociology and flunked Chemistry. I just wanted you to receive this news in its "Proper Perspective!" If you depend upon the circumstances, happiness can go up and down. Depend on God. He’s always “up.” After all, He’s called “The Most High.” Stop worrying, start praying, live in the peace of God, and your “Happy Meter” will go up.

G ò0 dNews for Kids Should We Keep It? Exodus 20:1-2,15

Hey! Look!" yelled Alicia to her friend Julie as they walked home from school. Julie looked at the place where Alicia was pointing. At first she didn't see anything but leaves. Then she noticed a wallet lying on the ground. "Someone must have lost it," said Alicia as she ran over to pick it up. The two girls quickly opened it. "Look at all that money," said Alicia. "There's a lot. Let's count it," said Julie. "There's two tendollar bills. That's $20.00. And a five and three ones. That's $28.00." "Wow! That's a lot of money-and we get to keep it," said Alicia. "Not if we can find out who it belongs to," said Julie. "Yes, we can keep it," said Alicia. "I've heard people say: 'Finders keepers, losers weepers"' "No, first we have to see if we can find who it belongs to," said Julie. "I bet it has a name in it somewhere." "You don't have to look for a name," said Alicia. "Here!" said Julie. "It belongs to Ronald Smith. He lives at 9600 Flagler. And here's his phone number." "I bet if you give it back to him, he won't even say thank you for finding it," said Alicia. "I think he will," Julie said. "Besides, that doesn't make any difference. It belongs to him, and we should give it back." "But I saw it first," said Alicia. "It's really mine." "But you showed it to me, so we both found it," said Julie. "And I say we call this phone number and tell the man we found his wallet." "I'll divide the money with you," said Alicia. "But the money isn't ours," said Julie. "If you had been by yourself

Some Questions 1. If you had found the wallet, would you have phoned the owner? 2. If you lost something, would you want the person who found it to return it to you? 3. Do you have your phone number on your wal let, purse, toys, or other things you might lose?

and found it, would you have kept it for yourself?" "I don't know," said Alicia. "I might have." "That would have been stealing. And that's wrong," said Julie.

"OK," said Alicia. "Let's phone him. I hope he gives us a reward."

A Prayer Lord Jesus, help me be honest when I take care of other people's things, and help them be honest when they take care of mine. Amen.

G ò0 dNews on Money Matters

christians & wealth: a paradox by andrew lee

s

January 2014

everal years ago, I told my sons—both of whom were pre-teens at the time—that I hope I’m never so poor that I can’t give away $50 or $100 at a moment’s notice to help someone in need; but at the same time, I hope I never become so wealthy that I forget the value of that same $50 or $100. Just this week, I was reading in Proverbs when I came across this scripture from Proverbs 30:8-9: “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.” I was struck by how similar this sentiment was to my own words to my children not so long ago. Yet, the writer of Proverbs points to a much more serious and introspective issue—namely, how financial success (or the lack of it) can affect us spiritually, often to our detriment. We are all familiar with Jesus’ pronouncement about how difficult it is for the “rich” to obtain the kingdom of Heaven. Sometimes I have seen or heard of this scripture being used, strangely, as an excuse for some Christians to justify their own sloth or to excuse habits of poor personal financial management: in other words, they say that they “don’t want to be rich” because Christ says it’s nearly impossible for the rich to get to Heaven. That strikes me as bizarre theology, to say the least. I personally know more than a few “rich” Christians who are using their wealth to accomplish much for the work of Christ. These are good stewards who regard their wealth as a blessing and a sobering responsibility entrusted to them by their Creator as they endeavor to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before God.” As I’ve explained to my children, I feel that God’s Word is quite clear that we are called to work diligently and tirelessly in whatever avenue God has called us to; moreover, we are called to be good stewards and financial managers of our income by saving, investing, and avoiding debt. “And what happens then?” my boys asked me. “What happens when you become wealthy by doing those things?” With a smile, I told them, “Then you get to spend the rest of your life giving away most of your money to help bless others! That’s the fun part!” At this young age, my sons are perhaps not as enthusiastic at this last statement as I hope they will soon be one day when they reach adulthood. But here’s what God has helped me to realize—not only is it all God’s wealth anyway, loaned by Him to us for our short time on this earth—but also our “wealth” is so incredibly tenuous and fleeting. Consider our investments in our retirement savings plans or in our kids’ college funds or in other shares of company stocks, bonds, CD’s, you name it. In today’s cashless, paperless society, those “balances” in our accounts are really nothing more than blips on a computer monitor, able to be wiped out, hacked, or manipulated from anyplace anytime with no warning. No, I’m not trying to be alarmist here, and as you know if you’re a regular reader of my column, I’m a regular monthly investor with faith in the stock market as the best path toward a secure retirement future. But the fact remains—we are not in control of what happens to our investments. They are at risk every moment from innumerable factors and vicissitudes. What about real estate? At least our homes are secure investments which we can count on for future financial security, right? Anyone who’s been awake since 2006 knows how fast and how thoroughly the real estate and home mortgage market can collapse for many reasons. Our true source of security rests in Christ. Let’s remember that as we start the New Year.

G ò0 dNews on Men

Dear 19-year-old-me, By Darren Schalk Last night I played softball for the first time in several years. It wasn’t pretty. And a friend who’s only slightly older than me went down hard with a pulled hamstring. I was not so unfortunate, although my hamstrings are screaming at me today. Which reminds me, who decided to call them hamstrings? I always picture a bunch of pigs playing stringed instruments when I hear that word—like a piggy string ensemble. Today I had to take several headshots for some upcoming events. When I had the chance to review them, I was not pleased. I looked old and chubby. What happened to you, 19-year-old-me? When did these wrinkles around my eyes become so pronounced? When did my gut start poking out? When did hair start growing out of my ears and nose at a breakneck speed? When did I start grunting every time I stand up? When did YOU become ME? Last week I started performing interviews for an assistant. When did I become a professional, conducting interviews and searching for assistants? When did life creep up on me? When did I cross the line from boydom to manhood? It all apparently happened while I was sleeping, unbeknownst to me. I thought I was still you, 19-year-old-me. But I’m not you anymore. Now I’m me. And I really, really, miss you. I miss your smooth, unwrinkled face and fluid joints. I miss your ability to eat everything and not gain a pound. I miss your hairless nose and ears. Makes me wonder what else happened while I was sleeping. Have I shrunk a couple inches? Did my IQ drop? If so, HOW WOULD I EVER KNOW?!?!?!? Have my fingernails stopped growing? Do I no longer love duck-billed platypuses? (We can safely rule that one out. I still love them, so we dodged that bullet.) This whole aging thing is scary. So, how does one age gracefully? Seems like it’s an impossibility to me. An improbable equation. I will most definitely not be aging gracefully, but maybe you can. I will go down into the annals of life kicking and screaming. Of course, it probably won’t last long because I’m sure as I kick I will pull a hamstring while an ensemble of pigs plays Beethoven in the background. But I won’t be able to hear them. My hearing will be gone by then. Aging Disgracefully, 35-year-old-you

What’s In Your Book? By Melinda Nicodemus

I

Inside you are screaming "I am not great!! I am sad,I am lonely, my marriage is struggling, I need a break, I need advice, I need a friend.' We as a whole do not take the time to get to the nitty gritty of the book.....our lives. We have all been there and we have all needed that someone we can call and really talk to and know that they will not judge and they will listen. Be that someone. If you see a mom struggling with her child go over and offer your help instead of thinking " gosh that child is a brat!! The parent must be doing something wrong. Mine would never......" It is so easy to forget the struggles you once faced yourself when they are behind you. We you say "Let's do lunch!" make the effort to actual go to lunch with them. Take the time to listen and "read the pages" of their books. Pursue It usually goes like this: friendships and show that person that you care and they are important. It can mean the world to someone. It can "How are you today? change their life. Each part of us has it's own unique story, but we "I am great!" "You?" can all find common ground when we are honest and " We are doing wonderful! Great to see you! Let's get to- share our stories. Do not let your attitude rob you of one of God's greatest blessings. Friendship. gether soon!!" am a wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend and woman. Each of these come with their own emotions and responsibilities. Each with their own stories. Most of us like to talk and share these stories, but do we really tell everything? We all have heard the saying " You can't judge a book by it's cover" well this is especially true of women. We all have our cover photo that represents us; we are smiling, happy, clean, and perfect. Our back cover tells a little about ourselves; how long we have been married, how many kids, hobbies, where we attend church etc. This is what we share the people.....the exterior of our "books". Rarely do we take the time to read/listen to the pages of someone's book.

“Let the children come to me.” Matthew 19:14 By Anna Anderson

I

have the privilege of teaching the preschool children at our church. Every Sunday I begin with the story of Jesus telling His disciples that He always has time for the children. Even though the disciples thought Jesus was too busy…Jesus wasn’t. I want the children to know that Jesus is NEVER TOO BUSY for them. No matter their circumstances, if they know they can always talk to Jesus and pray to Him, then they have learned something foundational. I have taught children at our church longer than I have been a parent. For any of you who have worked with children BEFORE you had children of your own, you might can relate…having your own children is COMPLETELY different than teaching or working with everyone else’s children. There is a soothing structure in the classroom that I look forward to. Even though is it a loose structure because of the age range…it is still routine. So, when I began the journey of parenthood, I felt pretty prepared. I was ready for the late nights, dirty diapers, runny noses, etc. I had a long list of BIBLE lessons I was going to teach my children too. I was ready. But, I quickly realized everything I thought I knew went right out the window. I am sure the disciples thought they knew best. They thought they were helping Jesus. January Creating time for Jesus to keep working at 2014

20

His ministry and keep His routines. They were just trying to help Jesus. But Jesus told His disciples to let the children come to Him. I am looking at this Bible lesson differently than I ever have before. I am looking at it from a parent’s perspective…not from a teacher’s perspective. This is a newer approach for me. I am learning that Jesus is showing ME how important it is to spend time with my children. If I am to be like Jesus, then I need to spend QUALITY time with my children. I am like the disciples more often than not. I want to tell my children that I have other things I need to do…but is that what Jesus wants me to do? That is when I go to Jesus. I ask Him to help me not worry about my to-do list…but to help me spend QUALITY time with my children, just like Jesus spends QUALITY time with me. I am His child, and He says to me, “Come.” When I have spent time with Him, it is easier to refocus my day. With a new year I am making a new to-do list. At the top of the list is spending time with my children. When I feel frazzled and overwhelmed at my responsibilities, then that is a good time for me to go to Jesus and spend time with Him. Then, my perspective always changes. He was not just teaching His disciples that lesson…He was teaching me too.

RESOLUTIONS By Amber Mullins

Remember, mindset shift!

Year’s resolution is nearRomans 12:1 ly as popular as making I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by them. One reason most the mercies of God, to present your people fail to accomplish bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and their resolutions is due to unrealistic expectations of acceptable to God, which is your themselves. While thinking reasonable service. about your resolution think about one specific goal and not a vague goal. For example, a vague resolution would be “to be healthier in 2014.” Instead state a more specific goal such as: “In January I will exercise 15 times for 30 minutes”. Take small steps. ow successful were Many people quit because the goal you at sticking to your is too big. In order to be successful New Years resolution it is important to not make radilast year? The YMCA of Cleveland will offer over 70 classes starting January 6, 2014. The easiest mindset shift would be to create a new normal instead of going on a diet. As you move from January to February it’s important you celebrate your small successes along the way. If you accomplish your goal of exercising 15 times in January give yourself a reward. Maybe a new pair of shoes, a spa day, or – heaven forbid – a cookie! It’s okay to have one sweet treat in a month because your mindset has changed. It’s the daily sweet treat that gets us in trouble. As we approach 2014 it is vital you keep your goals precise, your steps small, and to celebrate every success whether it be big or small. Weight loss will be a byproduct of your new mindset as well as overall health.

G ò0 dNews for Teens

Ready: Brothers, if someone is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual should restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so you won’t be tempted also. Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone considers himself to be something when he is nothing, he is deceiving himself. But each person should examine his own work, and then he will have a reason for boasting in himself alone, and not in respect to someone else. For each person will have to carry his own load.–Galatians 6:1-5 Set: What should we do when our friends repeatedly make the same sinful mistakes? Some would say, “I cannot change them.” Others would say, “That’s just who they are,” and even, “They will never listen to me.” However, if these friends are followers of Christ, we need to hold them to the commitments they made in Christ. They need to hold us to the same standard as well. We all need accountability. When someone feels he/she does not need it, that is the beginning of great trials ahead.

28

January 2014

What does accountability look like? It should be with one other person of the same sex, meeting weekly, if possible, to ask tough questions that will help both grow closer to Christ. Our goal is to be like Christ, and having a friend hold us to that standard brings us closer to Him. Having an accountability partner is crucial. It will take our relationship with Christ to a whole other level. Go: 1. Do you have an accountability partner? If not, why not? 2. Do you feel you need accountability? 3. How can you apply accountability to your life in Christ? Workout: Extra Reading: Deuteronomy 29:29; Proverbs 17:17; Hebrews 4:13 Payer: Lord, I desire accountability in my life. Bring people into my life who can hold me to Your level of excellence and who will point out areas in which I might be compromising. Amen.

leveland- Relief may be in sight for those suffering from back pain or neck pain due to herniated or degenerative discs, joint problems, arthritis and sciatica. Dr.Bodkin is using a new machine, the DRX9000, a breakthrough in the treatment of back pain. They are one of the first doctors in Tennessee to use this state-of-the art technology. The DRX-9000 enables the discs in the spine to be gently decompressed, relieving pressure on pain producing nerves in the low back. Each pa-

tient’s treatment program is specific for his or her condition. Removing the pressure not only allows the discs to reposition themselves, but also to regain fluid and become healthy and pain free again. The treatment for the patient is extremely comfortable and most patients fall asleep during the session. In most cases, pain in the back, neck, and/or leg and arm pain resolves after the first few minutes of being on the machine.

G ò0 dNews for Everyone “DPCI LIFE CLINIC” “CHANGING LIVES ONE HEART AT A TIME” By Melanie Lewis

S

itting in a local coffee shop, sipping on a piping hot brew of my very own concoction of hazelnut, cinnamon and just the right hint of vanilla tickling my taste buds. As I watched the steam rise off the top of the mug a misty fall rain began to trickle down from the sky drenching everything in it’s path. The leaves that were beginning to turn into their brilliant hues of crimson and warm orange were being tossed about in the breeze. The expresso machine was noisily sputtering out liquid happiness to awaiting customers. Smiling faces greeted one another with heartfelt emotional embraces characterizing more intimate relationships. A comforting familiarity fell across the room encapsulating us all subtly. Amongst the fond gestures and aromatic scents wafting through the air I found my thoughts overtaken by memories of an “outreach” that I had been a part of with my church. This scenario was a far cry from the world that I had been exposed to a few weeks earlier. Dwelling Place Church International has a heart to reach out to those in need. This coming from two pastors Jamie and Judy Jacobs Tuttle of Dwelling Place Church International. Honestly they should come with a “warning label” because both there vision and passion are highly contagious (smile). The first of many planned community outreaches was put into motion and implemented this past September called “Life Clinic”. A variety of services were offered such a medical, eye exams, dental care, salon services, food, shoes, music, prayer and spiritual support. As a member of “DPCI” I was ask to Co-chair a certain area and offer a helping hand along with many other volunteers. We had several meetings/prayer time to prepare us for the upcoming event. However, nothing could have prepared me for the soul stirring that I experienced on that unforgettable morning. I parked my SUV a few blocks away from the building where the “Life Clinic” was being held to help free up the onsite parking. This was a part of town where the crime rate soared and poverty was almost unavoidable. As I began the journey to my destination my eyes and heart were drawn to dilapidated structures in great need of repair and a fresh coat of paint. Cracked and broken windows gave way to the voices inside. Yards littered with plastic toys and other discarded items. Broken down vehicles many with flat tires and mechanical difficulties lined the driveways. I wandered who the occupants were and if they were happy or sad? Did they know Christ? What fate had brought them to such a humble place in life? My heart grew heavier with each step. As I crested the hill I could see a line of people from the front entrance down the sidewalk and turning the corner. I was greeted by smiles, kind gestures and eyes filled with hope and anticipation. It was 7 am and I discovered that most had been there since 5 am. with prior knowledge that we weren’t prepared to open the doors until 10 am. I had prayed diligently for wisdom, love, empathy and compassion for weeks to prepare myself. Hop-

ing to somehow have a life changing impact on those less fortunate. As the doors were unlocked and the needy, hungry, desperate and lonely men, women and children filtered in they showered us with words of gratitude and thankfulness. No one was shoving or trying to push their way to the front. They politely and mannerly waited their turn many after standing 5hrs. on the hard concrete sidewalk without complaint. My heart melted as my eyes met theirs and I could see the self confidence that brief moment had brought to them. They gained feelings of being cared for and loved on and were given the knowledge that they mattered, even if just to a stranger. Seeing a child enjoy cotton candy for the first time in their lives or bringing peace of mind to a woman who otherwise could never afford a mammogram is something money can’t buy. All that were served in those hours walked away with something and lives were impacted that day. You see I had come prepared to make a difference in their world and what had transpired was that they had all changed my life forever. Poverty, lack, desperation, loss and circumstance had all taken a human form that chilly early Saturday morning. And if not for the “grace” of God that could have been me on the other side of those glass doors standing for hours on that unforgiving harsh sidewalk. It’s easy to live our day to day lives unaware of the needs of others because we have been so blessed. I would like to thank my church Dwelling Place Church International here in Cleveland. My pastors whom I love and respect deeply for allowing me to to be a part of something so encouraging, loving and life changing. Let us all be reminded of this verse especially during the upcoming season of giving. Open your heart and impact someone’s life. You will never be the same again ............ “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Matthew 25:35

The Season of

New Beginnings

By David Gray

J

anuary – it is the season of new beginnings. It is a season of hope. Most folks realize they cannot do anything about what they did or did not accomplish in the previous year. The failed attempts of yesteryear mean little when the ball drops and that final bell of the previous year tolls. Subconsciously we think, “I have a chance to start over. I have a chance to begin again. This is the year I’m going to make a difference!” The New Year brings with it a clean slate and new determination. In January motivation runs high. Probably the most common New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight and/or to get in shape. Gym memberships and diet aid sales skyrocket, Bible reading plans are downloaded, get-out-of-debt budgets are made, and quit-smoking techniques are employed. In many ways, January may be the most positive month of the year. People not only recognize areas that they want to improve, but they actually begin to do something about it. This is a good thing. The proverb writer declared, “Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint” (Pr. 29:18 ASV). The first step toward any accomplishment is having a vision for it, that is, being able to see or imagine where it is you want go, what it is you want to do, or who it is you want to be. In order to be successful, once you have a vision you have to make choices to reach that vision. After establishing a goal, exercising self-restraint and discipline will be necessary in order to accomplish that goal. The person who wants to lose weight will have to restrain themselves from eating certain foods and exercise self-control in picking other food options. Someone who sees no need to lose weight, or even eat healthier, will eat whatever and whenever they want. They have nothing restraining them from poor choices. Without a vision or a goal, people have no reason to exercise self-discipline. One version declares the verse like this, “Where there is no vision, the people are uncontrolled” (BBE). Imagine a race horse without the usual blinders on the sides of his eyes. He would be distracted by every motion and activity on the sidelines as well as by the other competitors. The blinders act as restraints to keep the horse’s eyes looking forward and focused on the goal, the finish line. People with vision have self-imposed restraints in order to reach their goal. People with vision are self-controlled. It has been said that “Everyone will end up somewhere. Few will end up somewhere on purpose.” The question is - where do you want to end up a year from now? The answer to that question should determine the decisions you make today. New Year’s Resolutions are a wonderful thing. I suggest that this is the year to make a New Year’s Marriage Resolution. ried without thinking about the long-term results. They just assume that everything will work itself out. They typically do not have a vision for where they are headed. The importance of having a vision or mission statement is understood when it comes to running a business or a church. Without a clear vision the organization will flounder. The same is true for marriages. Without a clear and communicated vision, many marriages struggle for meaning. This struggle often leads to disappointment, unmet expectations, and blame. Marriages without vision are many times the marriages where the restraints have been cast off. Visionless marriages lead to overly busy people who neglect their most important relationship. Individuals married to their work, overly committed at their church, who spend too much time on the computer, or who allow the children to be the central focus of their home are usually in visionless marriages. Infidelity is the result of marriages without vision. Having a vision and a plan for your marriage can be one of the most inspiring, productive and motivating ways to view your life together. If you’ve considered leaving your marriage and starting over, I implore you, start over in the marriage you have now - with a new vision of what it can be. A marriage vision is something that you both create and craft together. It helps to keep you on the same team. Having a vision will help you keep from being pulled in other directions and distracted. Everything else is put into proper perspective as it relates to that vision. A clearly communicated vision for your marriage leads to self-control. Marriages with vision are ones where tempers are less likely to flare, dates are more likely to happen, and where self-giving and mutual support are the norm. Imagine what you want your marriage to look like down the road. Does it have more tenderness? Understanding? Kindness? More quality time spent together? Does it involve doing ministry or outreach together? Is it something your children will aspire to? What do you want your marriage to look like after the kids are grown and the house is empty? These are all components for you to consider as you make your Marriage Resolution. It is really important to write down your vision for your marriage. Keep it in front of you. Post it on the wall or keep it in your wallet. If you remind yourself every day of your Marriage Resolution, of your vision for your marriage, you have a much greater chance of seeing it come to pass. It could be the best and most powerful New Year’s Resolution you’ve ever made. It’s time for New Beginnings!

The

Power of

Words By Esmerelda Lee

I

read an article in the Aging Well magazine which reviewed the manner in which people address their elders. The article addressed a phenomenon known as “elderspeak” – as Dr. Ira Rosofsky, the article’s author puts it-this is “the old age analog of baby talk” (using words like “sweetie,” “honey,” “dear” etc.) When I was growing up, my parents always stressed the importance of addressing people by “Sir” and “Mam’, if I did not know them, and if I knew them, by “Mr.” and” Mrs.” We were told that even when adults tells us to call them by their first name, out of respect we should still address them according to how we were raised. In fact, I recall several times when my mother’s fingers pinched me inconspicuously as a result of my mistakenly addressing certain adults by their first name. However, even though I have taught my own children this same lesson, my children at times slip up and call adults by their first names. My teenaged son defended his gaffe by opining that today is a “more casual era” than the one I was brought up in. In many areas of health care, and in certain cultures, people believe by calling an older person by terms of endearment, like “sweetie” or “honey”, they are being kind and caring. However, research has shown that older adults often find these terms to be condescending. Many believe that this “elderspeak” serves to belittle or to devalue them as mature adults. GenerJanuary ally, most people do not like being re-

ferred to by physical or ethnic characteristics, such as ”the overweight man down the street”, or “the Indian man across the street”, yet it is very common to hear people remark about “Gramps down the hall”, or “that sweet old lady”. Richard Currey, a Physicians’ Assistant, wrote an article in Aging Well magazine wherein he observes that such phrases, though used carelessly and rarely with malicious intent, are indicative of a deep ageism that runs through our culture. As he puts it, “these discriminatory labels, no matter how they’re ultimately intended or directed, all tend to demean or devalue.” People change; our bodies just like our personalities evolve with time. The depiction of frailty and wrinkles should never change the manner in which we are addressed or viewed by others. I also think that people sometimes forget names, and as a result they tend to fall back on sappy and insincere monikers. When people are caring for or helping the frail who are in desperate need of compassion, we automatically want to respond by saying something soothing or loving. But it is always important to stop and consider whether it is appropriate and respectful. I still believe and will always believe that respect in any given situation is always the best course of action. I hope that in saying no to “elderspeak”, together we can slowly change our culture, keeping in mind that maxim many of us were taught growing up: “respect your elders.”

Godsees your

Faith By David Preston Triune Assembly Church

40

January 2014

"And when He saw their faith, He said, man thy sins are forgiven thee." Luke 5:20

L

uke, the beloved physician writes of the time when Jesus forgives, and heals a man that had faith in God. Many people came to see The Lord from Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem, and the power of The Lord Jesus was present to heal them. And men brought in a man on a bed, and they sought means to bring him before Jesus, but because of the crowd of people they could not. They were very persistent in wanting to see Jesus and they did not give up.(Don't give up, God will not give up on you). They took their friend up on the roof top, and removed the tiling, and let him down right in the midst of Jesus. I believe God is watching and waiting for all people to come to Him in faith believing, repentant of sin, and trusting Him for all things. He is long suffering and not willing for anyone to perish.

When we make effort to seek God's power we will not be disappointed. The Lord saw their faith; that He could heal this man; Jesus said, “your sins are forgiven’. And there were doubters there too, some said, who can forgive sins but God alone? And they were in the very presence of God. Jesus Christ is The Son of God, The Savior of our life, that came to visit this world for a short time in human form, and one day He will return. When the Son of Man cometh shall He find faith on earth? (Luke 18:8). If we look to Jesus in faith, He knows it, He sees it. He forgives sin, and brings healing to us. "Behold The Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear."(Isaiah 59:1) God will reward our faith in Him. (Hebrews 11:6) "But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him". The Lord is able to meet our needs, and He cares about what concerns us. Jesus saw this mans need and healed his life. How long will you wait? Will you trust God Today?

God will answer the prayer of faith. This man Luke tells us about, went to great lengths to go to Jesus, and received his healing. Will we be diligent and make effort to seek the Lord? David said in the Psalms "I will not rest until I find a place for God" These days it is so easy to find things to do, and stay out of church. Time is filled up with so many different things, and it seems that time for God is less than ever. This world will one day pass away, and all that will be left is eternity. The most important part of life is to have faith in God. When Jesus Christ is first in your life, you have a friend, and a guide now and for the future. Knowing Him is Eternal success! Many have gone before us, and shown us the way of faithfulness to God. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice. Enoch was translated thathe did not see death. Noah prepared an ark for the saving of his house. Abraham obeyed God, and went out not knowing where he was going. And he believed God, and God accounted it to him for righteousness. Moses chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ, greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked for the great reward that God would give him. (Hebrews 11:4-26). God sees our faith. Jesus completely healed the man that Luke tells us about. Jesus said "Arise, and take up your couch, and go to your house". And immediately he rose up and took what he was laying on, and went to his house glorifying God. (Luke 5:24-25). The man was healed, and Jesus healed him in a marvelous way. Whatever God does is always better than we can ever know. The greatest healing this man received, was salvation. When the man was set there in the midst of The Lord Jesus Christ; God's only begotten Son; The King of Kings, and Lord of Lord's, The Lamb of God, The one that shed His blood on the cross, for all the sin of the whole world. Jesus Christ said, "Man your sins are forgiven". God will forgive sin. He is The forgiver. He will save. He will heal. He will forgive. If you accept The Lord Jesus, by faith, if you make the decision to live for God. He will accept you, and never reject you. Life will begin to be new. Old things will pass away. Everything will be new. We are in a new year, 2014; Let this be a year that we believe God for great things! Pray and seek God's will more than ever!

He will Bless you abundantly!

he project which became Heritage Fellowship Church of God (hfcg) began with the vision of Harold and Joy Mosingo, and came to life through their dedication to selfless hard work. They began in November of 1991 by mailing a flyer to every residence in McDonald, TN. Arrangements were made with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in McDonald to rent their building for Sunday services. On Sunday, December 1st, 1991 Brother and Sister Mosingo held their first service at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 35 people attended that first Sunday morning service. In 1993 land was purchase on South Lee Highway. In 1994 a ground breaking ceremony was held to commemorate the beginning of church construction, the building was completed later that year. In the spring of 1995 Pastor Mosingo passed away after completions due to surgery. Steve and Teresa Gilbert became the pastors soon after that where they have ministered for almost 19 years. The Gilberts were raised in Cleveland giving them a personal feel for the social and spiritual needs of the community. They realize that although the message of Jesus Christ is eternal, the methods used to deliver that message varies from generation to generation. Their children, Jason and Stephanie and their families also attend the church. January

GOD IS ABLE! By Mike Shreve

I

n Deuteronomy 16:16-17 God directed the people of the First Covenant to gather three times a year for the feasts of Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles. He also commanded that none were to appear before the Lord empty, but that, “every man shall give as he is able…” Recently God burned this passage into my spirit, but with a different twist. Notice the rich were not to give little, the poor were not to give much; but all were expected to give to the level of their ability. Here is the “hinge,” the idea on which this article turns—God would never demand of His own something that He would not do Himself. If God expects us to give to His work according to the level of our ability, then certainly we can expect Him to move for us according to the level of His divine ability! Now this insight gains intensity. There are seven main Scriptural declarations of God’s ability toward us. Certainly His abilities go far beyond these seven areas—however, He must have emphasized these seven areas for a reason; therefore, we should magnify them as well, by embracing these promises and often declaring their fulfillment: ALL GRACE—2 Corinthians 9:8 declares that “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work” (NKJV, KJV). Grace is unmerited love and divinely imparted ability. There is no limit to the amount of grace available flowing from the throne of God. Grace is just as infinitely inexhaustible as the God who gives it. God only requires that His people exhibit: (1) Faith—Eph. 2:8, (2) Humility—I Pt. 5:5, and (3) Sincere love—Eph. 6:24. If these attitudes are in us and abound, the deep river of divine grace will abound toward us. DIVINE HELP—Hebrews 2:17-18 explains concerning Jesus, “in all things it behooved Him to be made like His brothers, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, having been tempted,

46

January 2014

He is able to aid those who are being tempted” (MKJV). How comforting it is to know that in our temptations and trials, the Lord Jesus is sympathetic and ready to assist us in our journey! He is compassionate and committed. Having faced every same temptations that we face in this world, He understands our plight and stands ever ready to help us, even to the point of marshalling the host of heaven. POWER TO STAND—Two scriptures relay this excellent promise two different ways. First, Jude 24 says, “unto Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy…” (KJV). The most noticeable revelation from this verse is that it is God’s great “joy” to uphold His people and render them blameless in His sight. If that will be the case in the great day of resurrection (as this verse foretells), it is certainly the case even now. The second scripture, Romans 14:4, warns: “Who are you to judge another man's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand: for God is able to make him stand” (NKJV). The one says God is able to “keep us from falling”; the other, that God is able to “make us stand”—so one way or the other, we are going to survive with the God of heaven on our side. PRESERVATION—Paul said, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day” (2 Tim. 1:12 NKJV). Notice that God can only keep what we place under His authority. Only if we give Him all our hearts and lives can we expect such blessed security. “That day” may refer to the Day of Judgment, then again, it may refer to those days when it seems calamity and confusion knock at our door. SALVATION—Jesus is revealed in the Scripture as the Great High Priest, the Great Intercessor, who constantly searches our hearts and “ever lives” to make intercession for us “according to the will of God.” (Ro. 8:27) Because of this, Hebrews 7:25 announces, “He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through

Him” (NKJV). Nothing can withstand or thwart His prayers for those who walk in covenant with Him. When God announces His intention to “save” us, it covers every negative thing to be faced in this world: He will save us from sin, from satanic powers, from mental and emotional distress, from failures, from sickness, from death, from the grave and from eternal destruction. He is ever interceding over us and the Father never fails to answer His appeals. INCREDIBLE PROVISION—“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Eph. 3:20 NKJV). Notice this release of incredible blessing hinges on the “power” that is within us—the power of faith, the power to imagine possibilities, expect the miraculous and praise God in advance for their fulfillment. Notice, however, that God declares He is not bound just to the limits of our expectations but is able to go far beyond what we can even conceive possible. What a promise! Let it be so, Lord! FINAL GLORIFICATION—“For our citizenship is in heaven; from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall transform our lowly body, that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself ” (Ph. 3:20-21 NKJV). To be changed into the image of the firstborn Son of God—what a destiny! Shining like the sun in the kingdom of our Father—what an ultimate outcome to this journey through time. If God can subdue the dust of mortality to His will and might, releasing us from the curse of death and propelling us into the glory of everlasting life, if we can take spiritual paupers and turn them into kings, to reign with Him forever, then truly God can subdue all things to Himself. Let us praise Him in expectation! Glory to God for His awesome ability to do these things! May we learn to fight the good of faith concerning these promises—claiming their manifestation in the Name of the Lord!
