give you the three C’s of discipline: Connection — You’ve heard that saying before, right? People don’t care what you know unless they know you care. There must be no doubt in that person’s mind that you are looking out for their best interest. You’ve got to connect with them heart-to-heart and not head-to-head. We are looking for transformation and not just information. Communication — A large percentage of the world’s problems is a lack of communication. Usually, it’s not because there’s a conflict that is irreconcilable; it’s because there is no desire for either party to meet. When it comes to conflict or no conflict, communication is a must. Look at the issue from their perspective. Communication isn’t all about how you see things; it’s about seeing things from both sides. Correction — There’s a difference between correction and criticism. Criticism demeans the person while correction edifies the person. Criticism seems to identify the person with their failures and mistakes. Correction identifies the person with what Jesus did. A person will tend to stand corrected if we connect and communicate in a relationship

It leads to maturity — God’s goal of maturing us is conforming us to the character of Jesus Christ. When we embrace correction, we are embracing the inner work of sanctification by the Holy Spirit. It leads to responsibility — The moment we stop blaming and complaining is the moment we take responsibility for our lives. You’ll never be able to have the freedom you want without a high respect for your responsibility to God and others. It leads to blessing — The Scriptures are God-breathed and they are profitable for correction so that you may be equipped to do good works (2 Timothy 3:16). Jesus says we aren’t to judge one another in a hypocritical way (Matthew 7:1), but He also says that righteous correction has its place (John 7:24). Let’s speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

with that person. It’s possible to lovingly correct someone and be rejected. Jesus discipled twelve men and one of them betrayed Him. Jesus connected with the disciples but He also corrected them. This is not a cookie-cutter formula but an effective way to disciple like Jesus did. Ultimately, people are responsible for their choices. There are many people who need a miracle in their life on a constant basis because they reject Godly correction and instruction

Our Daily Journey with Life

E

by Samuel Bain

ach day we face what we consider to be life’s difficulties. Our daily journey leads us down the path of right or wrong. What we do with our life is our decision; we can hurt other kids’ feelings at school or we can give another person some of our lunch if they don’t have any. The word goodness is a great example of how we are supposed to live our lives. Being kids we often find ourselves wanting to watch TV or maybe just playing outside, but what we don’t usually do is give other kids compliments about how they look, how athletic they are, or how smart they are. The reason the word goodness is such a valuable word to live our lives by is because it was mentioned in the Bible as a fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Another fruit of the spirit is kindness, but the difference between the two is that goodness is what we show when we stick up for someone who is being bullied, kindness is what we show when we sit with someone at lunch because they don’t have any friends. They are both very important when we are talking about furthering God’s kingdom. However, being good is what we can do every day as kids because we can tell others about Jesus and we can help others in class. Another thing we can do as kids is to have courage in our everyday journey in life. Jesus said he would never leave us but he never said our life would be easy or perfect. We are going to face difficulties but we can choose to have courage and push through with our journey and overcome our problems. Don’t ever think you are too small, you are too young , or you aren’t good enough because Jesus said that we

8 // January 2018

are created in his image and that we are made exactly how he wants us to be; so, we can never be too small or too young and we are always good enough because the same God who created the universe created us. We are always able to do what God tells us and make right decisions and even when we mess up, God still forgives us because he loves us so much that he sent his only child to die on the cross for our sins. He loves us so much that he will forgive us of all our sins because his only son Jesus died for you and me. Making the right decision is more than doing what you think is right; it is doing what God thinks is right. When you don’t know what to do, then think about what Jesus would do because he never sinned. He is the only person who has ever or will ever live and be perfect. We can strive to be like him, although we never will be, because he is the perfect example. In the end, we are all going to make bad decisions but we can give glory to God, ask for forgiveness and we can learn from our mistakes and do exactly what God has called us to do and we can be who God wants us to be. God wants us all to have eternal life in heaven with streets of gold but the only way that we can achieve this is by confessing our sins and believing in our hearts that his son Jesus died for our sins. This is the only way to have eternal life in heaven. So during your daily journey with life make sure that you show goodness. Samuel Bain resides in Cleveland, TN. I

I Am

by Charles Laws

n the book of Exodus, God had just spoken to Moses through the burning bush about leading the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt. In Exodus 3:13 God instructed Moses to tell the people that the God of their Fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob— had sent him. Moses asked God what should he tell them if they asked “What is His name?” God replied in verse 14, “This is what you are to say to the Israelites ‘I Am has sent me to you.’” Here it is implied that God has always been, God is now and God will always be. Moses was still concerned about the people not believing him. In Exodus 4:3 God instructed Moses to take the staff he held in his hand and throw it on the ground. When he did so, it became a snake and Moses ran from it. Then God instructed Moses to put his hand inside his cloak. When he did so and took it out it was white with a skin disease. When he put it back in his cloak and took it out again it was cleansed and had no skin disease. Finally, God told Moses to take some water from the Nile and pour it on the ground. The water became blood. Surely they would believe now. If they did not, there was nothing else that He could do to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. These miracles, particularly the blood, settled it! Moses knew that he had to be a spokesperson and leader of the people of Israel.

12 // January 2018

In the book of John we read seven verses that are very powerful and give us a connection to the passages from Exodus: ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

John 6:35 — I Am the bread of life John 8:12 — I Am the light of the world John 10:9 — I Am the gate John 10:11 — I Am the good shepherd John 11:25 — I Am the resurrection and the life John 14:6 — I Am the way, and the truth and the life John 15:1 — I Am the true vine and the Father is the gardener

In these amazing verses Jesus gives seven “I Am“ statements. The comparison to Exodus 3:14 together with these scriptures is astonishing: Jesus is claiming to be the great “I Am”; He is claiming to be God! For this reason He was accused of blasphemy. Blasphemy was punishable by death and He was eventually crucified because of this charge. God is a holy and just God. In the Old Testament, man had to make a blood sacrifice for his sin. God became man and came to earth and died on the cross to make a blood sacrifice once and forever. In John 19:30 Jesus said “It is finished.” Jesus shed His blood for the remission of man’s sin. There is nothing more powerful that He could do for the salvation of mankind. Charles Laws, retired Associate Professor Of Mathematics at CLSCC. Holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of TN. Enjoys chess, writing, walking, and music.

L

There is a Hope by Julie Giordano

ooking through the eyes of a child that dreams of all God created without limitation and boundaries is a gift, a true gift from heaven. Dreaming is a freedom that comes from within to see with your mind. So many young girls and women have been wounded and their minds have been tormented by fear, insecurity,

redeemed me and bought me back before I was ever born. He loved me and paid the ultimate price for me with His life. That love is unfathomable. That love is supernatural. The love of Jesus Christ is real, tangible and discoverable. I pray in this New Year that you will allow Jesus to become real in your life. I encourage you to seek a real tangible presence of God and He is so faithful to love your pain away. In His presence, everything is made new. The lyrics are so powerful in the gospel song, “Clean.” They say,

“” I see shattered You see whole I see broken But You see beautiful And You’re helping me to believe You’re restoring me piece by piece There’s nothing too dirty That You can’t make worthy You wash me in mercy I am clean

and hopelessness. The seeds of doubt that were planted many years ago still reap a destructive harvest today. But there is a HOPE for you to walk in freedom once again in your mind, and with new vision for your life. Some things in life will never make sense, and you could search a lifetime and still look into empty hands and a broken heart with no answers. I learned that why wasn’t where I found hope, but I found hope in Jesus. I found hope in forgiving. I found hope in surrendering my life and releasing expectations to my Savior, my comforter, and my healer. I couldn’t change the past, but I could embrace hope for my present and future. I first of all want to tell you how sorry I am for all of your pain, your loss, your emptiness, and the feeling your life didn’t matter. I am so sorry for who hurt you, who abandoned you, and your wounded heart that still bleeds today when certain words are spoken or circumstances that seem all too familiar. No drug can numb it and no counseling session can make it better. Religion can’t heal the deep-rooted pain and shattered dreams. I am so thankful that I know a Savior that knew my name before the foundation of this world and his name is Jesus. He is the Savior that made a way for me. He

14 // January 2018

It’s time to move past all the limitations and breaking the stronghold of all the lies that have held you bound. No longer living in the present with a past mentality. It may have been what you went through, but it is not who you are. I speak life and healing over you and your mind. I declare that you are free from every destructive word that was spoken over you. Free from every physical, sexual, mental and emotional abusive memory that haunts you to this day. It is time for you to believe you are free and stop letting the past and every bad circumstance that has happened since dictate your decisions today. You can go to church, read the Word of God and still be bound in your mind. You have the authority to control what you think. Your mind is like a wild mustang, and you have to harness it and tell it what you will think. Many times we allow our mind to think whatever it wants and then our actions follow our thoughts. Our mind has to be trained to align with the Word of God. This is a daily lifestyle. In this New Year, choose to let go of fear - fear of the past and fear of the future. Let go of all the “what if’s.” Create an atmosphere for faith to grow and hope to rise. Jesus loves you and wants you to trust Him and He will lead you well. This is the time for you to dream again and see things from a new perspective. Your life is worth it.

Parents Manual Not Included

W

by Bonnie A Wilson

hen I found out I was pregnant, I remember thinking “Should I read a parenting book or not?” My answer: “Nope, I hate reading! I can do this!” My husband, Rodney, and I have two children: Jacob is twenty-four and Rebekah is fifteen. There are eight and a half years between them; that is a significant gap, but God knew what He was doing. As a young mother, I will never forget hearing a message from Luke 2:39-52 about a certain virgin mother and her husband losing their son for several days. I thought to myself: they were chosen by God to raise His son and they lost him. I haven’t messed up that bad. I felt some measure of confidence after that message. But failure and inadequacy soon replaced it. Then the Holy Spirit would whisper to my soul my “life” verse: “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). He was reminding me of the incredible ability available to me through God’s Son. Early in our parenting, we definitely made many mistakes. We were too stern or demanding on our son, but by the time our daughter was born, we began to realize that God wanted us to be softer and more understanding. We knew He wanted us to reflect His love and compassion more. We based our parenting on our opinions and thoughts (doing things differently than our parents). My parents were “sold out” to Jesus. They taught and lived the Word. My dad was a minister and very strict. My mom was my avenue to some measure of freedom. They never mistreated me. I was spanked (not beaten). I chose not to rebel because I feared God and my parents. (Actually I was afraid it would be displayed across my forehead and my parents would know it). But, I knew they loved me. There is only one perfect parent: God the Father. He does not expect parents to be perfect. He wants us to seek His guidance and will. We are to simply follow His Word. I wish I could say I searched the scriptures for guidance, but I didn’t. I know there are many books available to help

20 // January 2018

in parenting. But you will never go wrong by searching the Scriptures and seeking God’s council. “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). “Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go” (Isaiah 48:17 KJV). Another word for “profit” in this verse is “benefit”. We benefit through the wisdom of His Word. Satan continually works to discourage and detour us from God’s path, and he is really good at what he does. But remember, we have authority through Jesus to reject the enemy. God is ready to help any time we need help. He will never impose himself on us. He is a perfect

gentleman. God has showed so much mercy to us. I had a manual all the time! Our poor children made it through our trial and error parenting. They turned out to be great kids that love and serve Jesus. Also, Jacob blessed us with a precious daughter-in-love, Elizabeth. Parents are not given a manual. Well, not as most people think. Seek God. Bonnie A Wilson lives in Benton, TN with her husband, Rodney and daughter, Rebekah. She works as a clerk for the Register of Deeds in Bradley County, Tennessee. Her prayer is all come to know Christ and serve God wholeheartedly. She loves to sing, encourage & serve others, and spend time with her family & friends. She is an active member at Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Cleveland, TN.

New Year’s Resolutions

W

by Patty Lauren Seger

hat a blessing we have been given for a new year to create new memories, pursue new dreams, and enjoy life! For many of us, coming out of the holidays can feel a little bit like coming out of a fog. Our normal routine has probably been shaken up a bit and we have been faced with three dreaded words — New Year’s Resolutions. As a society, we have been conditioned to believe the holidays are a time to let loose with our health because just as quickly as they came and went, we will be presented with a time to redeem ourselves. We share our resolutions with each other partly in hopes to have accountability, but most of us do have good intentions to follow through with our resolutions and often times, health and fitness are at the top of the list. So, where do we go wrong? While the idea of resolutions is good, the chance we will fully commit to a resolution we almost feel pressured by society into making is not likely. We have all seen it - the gym packed full of the “resolutioners” and the fitness classes teeming with new faces and big goals only to see the crowd thin out before the onset of spring. We get discouraged with lack of results or we make resolutions we know we cannot keep long term. Sometimes we simply quit because, let’s face it, it’s not easy to change our old habits and create new ones, especially if they involve moments of unpleasantness. Hebrews 12:11-12 tells us, “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees...” Coming from a background of being overweight and unhealthy, I fell into the resolution trap year after year.

24 // January 2018

It wasn’t until I decide to stop setting resolutions that were so far out of my reach that I finally made lifestyle changes I was able to stick to. Instead of having goals of “I want to lose 15 pounds”, “I need to have abs to be happy”, or “I’m going to only eat green, leafy vegetables”... I set attainable goals that I knew I would commit to and could easily build upon once they were reached. Let’s say one of your New Year’s resolutions was to “go to the gym at 5am every day” — that is an awesome goal, but are you an early riser? If so, then making yourself get up a little earlier to hit the gym is a great idea; however if you hit the snooze button 5 times before your feet hit the floor, it might be time to try another approach. What about utilizing your lunch break for your health hour? Or, going to the gym for an hour after work? Set goals that you can incorporate into your current schedule - this will help create a better long term habit and will enable you to adhere to your plan! Instead of completely ditching that 2-3 soda a day addiction, drop your serving to 1 and gradually remove it completely from your life. Or, allow yourself 1 a week as you work to remove the sugary drink from your dietary intake for good. You will have a better chance of adhering to these small changes over time and therefore enabling you to feel successful in changing your habits. As you begin to see and feel the changes you are making you can be more motivated to increase your goals as you work them into your lifestyle. Your health should be a priority, not an afterthought. Whatever you set your heart and mind to you can achieve! Our bodies are incredibly crafted by our Creator — if you have the gift of an able body, I encourage you to look past just a resolution and transform your lifestyle. Discovering Lies and Uncovering Truth

H

by Taylor Jewitt

ave you ever been called gullible? To this day, people tell me how gullible I am. I will believe the silliest and most unrealistic things. I could be wearing sandals, and someone can say “your shoes are untied” and I will stop and kneel to tie my shoes just to find that I was believing the lie they told me. I normally give a fake laugh and think to myself “how did I fall for that?” Everyone around me will laugh and laugh because I fell for the lamest joke there is, yet again. It is funny, but because of who I am I can tend to become insecure and overthink every little thing. The more I thought about this little lie I believed, I realized that there were other lies that I believe. Some of them included the following: “You are not enough”, “You are not loved”, “You are not cared about”, “You don’t have a purpose”, “None of the promises God has made you will come true”, “God doesn’t hear you or care about you”, and “You are not important.” I had a hard time believing that they were lies because I was so attached to them and had accepted them as a part of my identity. One night I was praying and read Romans 1:25 which says, “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshipped created things rather than the creator.” After reading it, I began to pray, and I heard God whisper, “You’re believing lies about yourself and who I made you to be.” Suddenly, I felt this overwhelming heartache. I had fallen for the lies of the enemy and accepted them as truths about

26 // January 2018

myself and God. I decided to write out every lie I believed about myself, others, and God and then look through scriptures to find the truth to replace those lies with. The reason I am sharing all of this because it is the most important lesson I have learned in this last year: stop believing the lies that hinder you and the person God has called you to be. You are not a victim, so do not walk through life with a victim mentality. You are a child of God, more than a conqueror. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives on the inside of you. You don’t have time to doubt who you are and what God has called you to be. We waste so much time being consumed with the opinions of man that we are hindering the power of God. Unless we stop and address the lies, we will never abide in the promises as children of God. We will never see miracles, signs, wonders, Heaven on Earth, or salvations until we are able to walk in true freedom from self-doubt and condemnation. Have the courage to face the lies within. Have the courage to seek truth, even when it hurts, because healing will come. There is freedom when you know who God says you are and actually believe it. Don’t waste any more time believing the lies that consume you and stifle your identity and purpose. Choose truth. Choose healing. Choose freedom. She is also the director of the English Language Center for Kids at Lee University. In her free time she enjoys making jewelry, spending time with family, and writing.

On a more personal note, Dr. White, his wife Casi and two sons Cole and Carson are members of Silverdale Baptist Church of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Since 1998, they have called Cleveland, Tennessee their home. As evidenced by his commitment to continued post-graduate education, Dr. White has completed advanced cosmetic training with the leading world experts in cosmetic surgery. He prides himself with an eye for detail and uses the most current technology and equipment. Surgeons are doing more than just checkups in their offices these days. Advances in medical technology have made it possible for physicians to perform more advanced and complex surgical procedures safely in their offices. Whether it is vein surgery, skin cancer excisions, tummytuck, breast augmentation, facelift or a complex biopsy, these procedures can be completed safely in our office-based surgery suites. Since most patients want to avoid an overnight hospital stay after surgery, ambulatory surgical procedures have become very popular. That’s why almost one-half of all surgeries are now being done in an outpatient facility, either connected to a hospital or in a separate surgical center. More recently though, there has been a growing trend for surgery to be done right in a doctor’s office because charges associated with ambulatory surgery completed in an office setting are substantially lower.

The same anesthetic techniques used in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers are used in office-based surgery. They include: • Local anesthesia, which provides numbness to a small area of the body, such as a dermatologist might use to numb the skin around a mole before removing it. • Monitored anesthesia (sedation/analgesia), during which a patient receives medications that relieve pain and make the patient drowsy. During surgery, the patient’s vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen level, will be watched closely in order to avoid sudden changes or complications. • Regional anesthesia, which can include spinal blocks, epidural blocks or extremity blocks. Spinal and epidural blocks involve interrupting sensation from the legs or abdomen by injecting local anesthetic medication in or near the spinal canal. Other blocks can be performed for surgery on extremities, or limbs, blocking sensations from the arm or leg. • General anesthesia, which involves the total loss of consciousness, pain sensation, and protective airway responses. From the simple removal of a mole to breast augmentation/reduction, liposuction, hernia repairs, or advanced surgical excision of skin cancers can be completed in our surgical suites. In addition to venous diseases, Advanced Surgical Concepts offers cosmetic procedures designed to lift and tighten skin, reverse sun damage and aging, decrease fine lines and wrinkles, as well as total facial-body skin rejuvenations. The friendly Christian staff at Advanced Surgical Concepts believes that patients have both physical and spiritual needs. Their goal is to ensure that both needs are met. Dr. White states, “We are available to see patients in consultation, in most cases without referral. We offer complementary varicose vein screening examinations and cosmetic consultations. Please call 473-2900 or 648-4011 or log on to our website advsurgical.com to make your confidential private appointment.”

Look for Your Purpose

R

by Kelly Wells

emember, it is the hard times in life that build character. The easy things do not require us to fully lean on God, so it is actually when we are in our hardest times we become who Christ intended us to be. Just as unwanted and excess material must be removed from gold or silver by fire heating it up before it acquires its value, we must go through fires of purification in our own lives to bring out our value, beauty, and potential. When hard times come, don’t fight against them, accept them, hold your head high, and slowly walk through them with God by your side. Don’t ask God why! Ask God “What is it you are wanting to teach me?” and learn through it! You will be surprised at the new things the Father will produce in you on the other side. God never wastes a struggle. He changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls, and coal into diamonds. He uses time and pressure to make something beautiful and He is working on you too!

Psalm 40 (NLT) 1

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.

2

He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.

3

He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord. A Bed of Roses

I

by Don Smith

came across this scripture; I’ve seen it reading previously, but this time it was a great deal different. It’s Proverbs 14:4, “Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.” It can be applied to many things in life. My basic take on it is that if you’re looking for neat and clean, there’s probably nothing going on. If you’ve got an Ox the manger is going to be messy. If you’ve got an abundance of crops the barn is going to be busy, or messy. If you and your significant other are together, there’s probably going to be differences of opinions, different history, and different family cultures. There is no such thing as a perfect relationship. There will always be give and take, compromise, even developing a new culture together. I’ve never seen a perfectly clean kitchen produce a wonderful meal. There’s always a mess. I’ve never seen a perfectly clean job site; if you’re building something, you’ve got a mess. Now, that doesn’t mean you don’t clean up after yourself; it means things are not going to be a bed of daisies, probably more like a bed of roses. Remember, those beautiful pedals are atop a stem of thorns, and you had better be careful how you handle them.

32 // January 2018

If you’re looking for 7 easy steps to a great relationship, think again. A great relationship is when two people come together, make promises, exchange vows, commit to a set of ideals, and work at accomplishing them. They’ll do it when the sun is shining, they’ll do it when the storm clouds are swirling, they’ll do it when the rain floods, the wind howls and the snow covers them over. There is no product (a healthy relationship) without a mess manger. My challenge for you is to check out your manger; is it nice and neat? What does that mean to you? Are you wondering if this is real or just stale left overs? Is there a mess surrounding your manger? Maybe it would be a good idea to evaluate the product. Is it possible that you like the product? If so, is the mess a good thing? If there’s a mess, that doesn’t necessarily mean a bad thing, but it would be a good idea to clean up after every production. Just some thoughts (cud) for you to chew on while you’re examining your manger.

Independent Living Making the Choice to Move

hy should I leave my beautiful home?” This is a fair and valid question, often asked by older adults when they are considering relocating to an independent living community—also known as a retirement community. Their families also wonder why their parents should move—and professionals who serve older adults and their families may also hear their clients ask them this question, seeking their opinion. In particular, executive directors of independent living communities are often asked to make home visits to answer prospective residents’ and their families’ questions, and to explain the benefits and implications of relocating to an

independent community, along with providing tours of their facilities. These executive directors often become important facilitators of change in the lives of older adults and their families. Moving is commonly recognized as one of life’s major transitions and sources of stress. To answer “why should I leave my beautiful home?”—or at least explore the idea of moving—it helps to know the difference between independent and assisted living, and what some of the benefits of independent community living are, as well as guidelines for making a successful transition into the community. Independent

34 // January 2018

living communities may not be a fit for every older adult because of a variety of factors, but many retirees today owe it to themselves to consider whether living among their age peers would best serve their needs. Independent living communities have multi-faceted potential benefits, and it is important for older adults and their families to educate themselves about this type of community before making a decision. It is helpful first to understand the main distinction between independent living communities and assisted living. That key difference is that independent living communities do not provide its residents assistance with the activities of daily living (ADLs), whereas assisted living communities do provide this help, and may also have a living area set aside especially for residents with dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, who require special care. Social interaction and sense of community: As people age, apart from the weekly Sunday church service or occasional lunch bunch gatherings, older adults tend to spend more time on their own. Self-isolation in many ways becomes selfpreservation. Less social interaction may mean less criticism from others, but it also means less support, less encouragement, and fewer opportunities to share with and confide in others. Independent living communities, on the other hand, encourage social interaction with peers. As with any major life transition, it is essential to gather information and comparison shop before making a decision. One should solicit opinions from family and friends, and search the countless consumer resources available on the internet to get a comprehensive picture of any independent living community under consideration. The results of this research provide a much better position from which to make a decision—whether to age at home or move into a different, but potentially equally compatible and fulfilling living experience. ear Lord in heaven I want to say thank you Thank you for your love and grace. Life hasn’t always been kind or easy. Many times I’ve misunderstood. It’s taken me years Lord to realize that it’s all good. Without the bad, I would find it difficult to thank you for all the good. You’ve given me so much. Through loss I found appreciation and through sickness, I found salvation. All the trials have taught me lessons and for this Lord, I am grateful. This road has been long and hard. There’ve been bumps, curves, and forks along

the way, but you, Lord have helped me every step of the way. You’ve never left my side and when I doubted you; you were there calming my fears, giving me a sense of peacefulness when I was so very scared. Sick as I am, I know that I am blessed. Without you Lord, I would be so much less. You carry me on my darkest of days and when I think I can’t go on, you shine your light and show me the way. Thank you, Lord for all your love and your many blessings from above. Ginger Smith is married to her husband Gary and they have two children, Josh and Tabitha. Agin is Harder for Women According to a New Poll

A

by Dr. James White

poll of an estimated 2,000 individuals concluded that men are perceived as “old” five years later than women. Even more, men are considered attractive at an older age. This comes as no surprise to us as recent data confirms a suspicion we have had all along. According to a national poll released by Allure, the aging process is, well, sexist to say the least. Essentially, the visual effects of aging take a greater toll on females than males. For example, the poll found 30 years of age to be the prime aesthetic age for females, whereas 34 years was determined to be the aesthetic prime age for males. While poll participants found gray hair an attractive feature on males—making them appear more “distinguished”—the participants found gray hair on females unflattering and more “extinguished”. “People overwhelmingly said they were concerned about the effects of aging. They were concerned about how it would affect their attractiveness to the opposite sex and particularly with women, how aging would affect their career,” explained the poll director, Kristin Perrotta (nydailynews.com). With the help of advances in cosmetic surgery, women no longer have to feel helplessly imprisoned by their age. Gray hair is easily changed by hair coloration. No matter what the concern, droopy eyes, jowls, or fine lines, there is an effective treatment with new technologies. Even better, cosmetic procedures have

38 // January 2018

become more affordable. With the availability of more non-surgical (more affordable) alternatives like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, laser resurfacing, and dermal injectable fillers, and financing programs specifically for cosmetic procedures, cosmetic surgery is no longer reserved for the rich and famous. In fact, 42 percent of the female poll participants admitted they would consider cosmetic surgery. The taboo is fading. On a more hopeful note, Perrotta expressed, “People did overwhelmingly have a much more positive view towards aging and toward themselves and their look as they grew older” (nydailynews.com). The take home message? Embrace aging-gracefully. Not! Fight it every step of the way. If not for the original sin and fall of Adam, we would have perfect bodies. Aging is part of our fall from grace. It is no wonder that we want to fight the aging process. We want to be in the image of God without aging. A Lost Mind, Forever?

ave you ever lost something and you really feel the effects of your loss? Oh, we find ourselves looking for the car keys, a tool, or a credit card, which are items pertaining to our everyday lives in which we don’t think too much about. We just mumble “I think I’m losing my mind,” or “I thought I put it here,” or “I saw it here last.” “What’s wrong with me?” We generally dismiss these thoughts as shallow mumblings and go on with our day because we eventually find that we thought was lost. But I don’t want to focus on these losses. There are losses we feel deeply and find ourselves struggling with coping to deal with their effects. Our mumblings become serious in that our expressions become “I am really lost without it,” “I’m in a situation in my life with no idea how I am going to weather the storm,” or “I do not see a ray of hope in my situation.” These feelings are real and occur most frequently in January and February, following all the demands and excitement of the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. We’ve over spent our budget, over taxed ourselves physically and mentally, and now we need to face reality. We have lost focus of the hope-giver in all situations; in the midst of all of our hustle and bustle, excitement and hype, and the parties from the holiday season, did it become all about us? It’s really all about Christ, born to bring glad tidings, great joy, good cheer, and hope to all who will believe and focus on him. He truly is our hope. We have lost everything if we have lost the hope God gives. God gives us:

H O

by Carl Corser

ope — Hope for all situations. A positive attitude “I can make it through this.” I can do all things which Christ strengthens me to accomplish. pportunity — Opportunity to live in the abundance of God’s love and blessing. Without hope, there isn’t an opportunity for God to walk with us through the trial in the valley. urpose — Purpose of fulfillment in life as the hopegiver has created for us to accomplish in our life. Purpose in life is a wonderful force, enabling us to live, blooming where we’ve been planted, and being fruitful in every circumstance of our lives. ternal — Eternal favor from the hope-giver beginning today and through eternity upon the realization of the fact that we have lost hope and have requested his help to change. Hope does not have to be lost forever.

We lose so much more in life than just losing hope. We forfeit so many blessings every day the longer we allow hopelessness to continue to dominate our lives. Christ, the hope-giver, adds so much to our lives if we would place aside our thoughts and wisdom and turn our complete trust and confidence toward his thoughts and wisdom. Have we not temporarily lost our way because we ceased to focus on Christ, the hope-giver, for all of life’s circumstances. He is our hope. In him we live and have new opportunities. He is our purpose for living. From him comes our eternal life. Hope deferred makes our heart sick: but when hope comes, it is a tree of life — Proverbs 13:12 KJV, paraphrased Carl Corser is an Ordained Bishop, serves as president of the Gideons Cleveland North Camp, board of directors and Chaplain of the Peach state Antique Tractor Club, owner of Corser Enterprises (roll-off dumpsters, sheet metal and welding shop, and home renovation)

Giving Blood to Save Lives is Easier Than Ever

A

by Lisa Coleman

s health professionals, we all understand the importance of giving blood. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S.—and many times right here at Starr Regional Medical Center—needs blood. However, obstacles like busy holiday schedules, inclement weather and seasonal illnesses can hamper efforts to keep the blood supply at the levels needed for our patients. That’s why, since 1970, January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month—a month dedicated to shining a spotlight on the generosity of those who give their blood to save the lives of others, while also raising awareness of the continued need for donations. “Donating blood is one of the easiest and most effective ways that we can all have a direct and personal impact on the overall health and well-being of our community,” said Lisa Coleman, M.T. and Laboratory Director at Starr Regional. “What many people don’t realize is that a one-time donation can save the lives of up to three people.” Donating is a quick and easy four-step process that includes registration, medical history and a mini-physical, the actual donation of blood, and a post-donation refreshment. Throughout January, many opportunities will be available to donate blood and save lives. Visit medicblood.org for upcoming blood drives in our area. People who donate one pint of blood per year to MEDIC Regional Blood Center receive MEDIC‘s blood coverage benefit. This benefit exempts donors and their IRS dependents from paying blood collection fees at any hospital in the U.S. if a transfusion is needed. However, this benefit does not include pre-existing illnesses or conditions. Each donation adds another year’s coverage to protect donors and their IRS dependents.

◊ Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of red cells, plasma, and platelets. The body will replenish the elements given during a blood donation—some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks. ◊ All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and other infectious diseases before it can be released to hospitals. *Information provided by the American Red Cross

Know Before You Go

◊ Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded. ◊ Donors can give either whole blood or specific blood components (red cells, plasma or platelets).

I

Through God’s Eyes

’m so flabbergasted at God. This

by Yada Mariah Draper

morning as I was brushing my teeth and looking in the mirror with my

bare face, no makeup, messy hair, and insecurities revealed and wide open, I chose to look at myself through the eyes of Jesus instead of judging every little thing that can’t be changed about myself. As I continued getting ready, and put my make-up on for self-enjoyment (or just a cover up for insecurities), I looked at myself in the mirror again. I still saw all of my flaws, but I willingly continued to look at myself the way Jesus looks at me. No matter the flaws or insecurities, there is still immense beauty in every single person on this earth! We just have to choose to see it. There is such a freedom and a weight lifted off when one chooses to see their own beauty and is comfortable in their own skin. Once you realize who you are in Christ, you not only become more free to be yourself and more joyful, but you impact others around you greatly. Once you realize who you are in Jesus, you become even more one with Him through that act of surrender. Love yourself! Embrace your insecurities and turn that dread and hate of yourself into love and freedom for the king! You are so very beautiful and perfectly made in His image.

“It is beautiful how God has done everything at the right time. He has put a sense of eternity in people’s minds. Yet, mortals still can’t grasp what God is doing from the beginning to the end of time.” — Ecclesiastes 3:11

I am so in love and on fire for this man name Jesus Christ who first loved me. My passion and desire is to be a missionary to the world, and a bondservant to my Lord and my God, all for His glory!

Can Your New Year’s Resolution Help Others?

T

from Anytime Fitness

he New Year is a perfect time to make improvements in one’s overall health. While losing weight is important, your overall fitness is essential. Being physically fit not only allows you to look and feel better, it allows you to be of better service to others. Think of it this way, if you were on a hike with a spouse or a friend and they became immobilized, could you carry them to safety or retrieve help in a timely manner? Do you have the strength to help an elderly neighbor remove a fallen tree or carry a child away from danger? There is good news! Improving your physical fitness is not as complicated as some would believe. In fact, it’s one of the easier resolutions to take on. Depending upon your current physical condition, the following example can help you get

50 // January 2018

started. Start out on a 20 or 30-minute walk or jog and take note of the distance you covered. In the next day or two, repeat the activity again attempting to go a little farther than you did previously. Try doing this every other day for the whole month of January and you will be amazed at how much you have improved your cardiovascular fitness. Also, don’t be surprised if you are fitting into some pants that were too tight a couple of months ago! 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us that our body is a temple and that we are bought with a price, and therefore we should honor God with our bodies. Having a healthy body that is capable of helping others should be one of our utmost priorities. This year, keep yourself motivated by thinking of all the people you can help by being more physically fit yourself!

There is a Reward Waiting for You by Kelly McDonald Jr.

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” — Hebrews 11:6 KJV

S

ometimes you may feel like you are just going through the motions or as if you are stuck in the monotony of life. This happens to us all. Perhaps you have been diligently attending services at church, giving, and even volunteering as you are able. You pray and ask God for guidance as you make decisions in life. In our day-to-day routines, we can feel wearied or fatigued. You might even question the point of it all. Well, I have good news for you! Yes, we can get weary and even question our purpose in life. However, if you are a child of God you have a reward for your work! Your giving, serving, attending, seeking and praying is building an eternal reward. In Hebrews 11:6, the writer explains that God will reward us for diligently seeking Him. You might think your devotion or commitment is in vain, but this verse assures us that it is not! Every time you consider God and put Him at the center of your decisions, He is adding reward to your account in Heaven! We even store up reward in Heaven for our giving. Jesus said: “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:20-21). Also, consider that your giving brings about rewards on this side of eternity. When you give to a missions trip and see people won to Jesus, that is rewarding!

52 // January 2018

Even if you are ridiculed for your faith, you receive reward. Jesus said: “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you” (Matthew 5:11-12). Some people may stop associating with you when you decide to be a Christian. While we miss these people when they are gone, realize that God will reward you for being committed to Him. “And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life” (Matthew 19:29). With God, your service is never in vain (I Cor. 15:58). I encourage you today to serve with this fresh, renewed understanding. Take to heart these reminders about reward and allow them to inspire you as you strive to serve Him. He is adding it all to your Heavenly reward account. There is a reward waiting for you. Kelly McDonald, Jr. is an international Evangelist with Hungry Hearts Ministries and pastors a church in Cleveland. He has written a combined total of 40 books and booklets on pursuing a deeper relationship with Jesus. www.hungryheartsministry.com

Promises, Promises!

The Secret to Being a Trustworthy Person

W

by Evelyn Bathe

e’ve all heard the expression, “Your word is your bond.” Back in the day, that statement carried a lot of weight. Business deals were made with merely a handshake, and people trusted that whatever someone said, it would indeed happen. “A person who promises a gift but doesn’t give it is like clouds and wind that bring no rain.” — Proverbs 25:14 NLT “It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it.” — Ecclesiastes 5:5 NLT However, many times it seems that we are like Diogenes who wandered around ancient Greece with a lantern, looking for an honest man! So often, we find that people say a lot of things, perhaps without thinking about what it will take to follow through on their words. This is a trap that parents can so easily fall into. We say things like: ◊ “We’ll go to the park tomorrow,” but when tomorrow comes, we’re too busy to keep that promise to little Suzie. ◊ “Son, I got called in to work. We’ll go fishing next week, I promise!” Then next week, a meeting gets scheduled, and again, little Johnny gets put off. It’s a terrible thing for a child to lose faith in a parent. It can cause damaging, devastating, debilitating effects in a child’s life. Not only parents, but all of us, in all walks of life, can so easily entrap not only ourselves but also those we interact with, be it family, friends, co-workers, associates, or acquaintances. When we say we will do something, or

54 // January 2018

something will happen, others rely on our words and set their course of action accordingly. Then when we don’t follow through with action to back up our words, we leave a wake of disappointment, mistrust, sorrow, or pain in the lives of others. It’s easy to get caught up in casual conversation and say things we don’t really mean or intend to do. Or perhaps we fully intend to do what we say, but then justify, forget, or excuse ourselves when we don’t fulfill what we intended to do. Our unfulfilled and empty promises can cause those people to lose faith in us and what we say. Respect and credibility can be lost forever, sometimes never to be regained. An old Italian proverb says, “When a man deceives me once, it is his fault; when twice, it is mine.” We say it this way: “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” When we don’t keep our word, people will eventually adopt a similar attitude and categorize us as unreliable, untrustworthy, and undependable. The only way to avoid this dilemma is to “let your word be your bond.” Do what you say you will do. If you are genuinely hindered, then make amends. Apologize. Pay back the time you took from them. Repair the damage. Make restitution. Then, the words people will use to describe you will be “reliable, trustworthy, dependable, credible, a person of integrity who keeps promises!” Evelyn Bathe is the wife of Joseph, mother of Jonathan, and grandmother of Brooklyn & Jackson. She has been a speaker for youth, women, and marriage conferences and served in various Christian ministries. Evelyn & her husband retired from pastoring and presently serve the Peerless Road Church in Cleveland as pastors of the small group ministry.
