The endless barrage of e-mail forwards has made us all too familiar with those ever so cute prayers that some little red cheeked, round eyed toddler prayed, or more than likely, a creative adult fabricated. Nonetheless, among my favorites is this one by Agnes, age 6: “Dear God: Please bring me a new brother. The one I got hits me all the time.” Then there’s this one from Theresa, age 8: “Dear God, I know you love me but I wish you would give me an ‘A’ on my report card so I could be sure.” Then from Jimmy, age 6: “Dear God: Who did you make smarter? Boys or girls? My sister and I want to know.” It’s fun to think of prayer in such a way; simple and innocent. But prayer is certainly far more than just childlike thinking. Prayer is the gift of God for communication with Him. As one man defined, prayer is “to ask that the laws of the universe be annulled in behalf of a single petitioner confessedly unworthy.” Consider these simple, yet more profound prayers: “Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace” appealed Francis of Assisi. “May the grace of Christ our Savior, and the Father’s boundless love, with the Holy Spirit’s favor, rest upon us from above” was the hopeful prayer of John Newton. In these prayers, there is more than simply a depth of vocabulary. There is a heartfelt expression to the Savior for Him to be glorified through the power that only God’s Holy Spirit can bring. All Christians need to have a sincere and active prayer life. While many adults might agree that the gift of prayer should be exercised daily, developing a discipline of prayer can be a great challenge. Diligent attempts are made, but failure to regularly communicate July with God can cause us to quit in discouragement.

Still, God urges us to develop a persistent exercise of prayer. Jesus taught His disciples the Lord’s Prayer as a model. He illustrated how prayer should begin by recognizing the glory and honor that God is due, and then showed how our prayers should include concern for the needs of others, as well as those of ourselves. In addition to terms that focused on the majesty of God, He used many inclusive terms, such as: “our,” “us,” “we,” and “everyone.” Still, the effort to pray regularly can be a struggle. Realizing this, Jesus told a parable about a man who interrupted a friend in the middle of the night to make an urgent request. According to Jesus, that man received his request because of his persistence, not because of his persuasion. Persistence in prayer reveals our dependence on God and our trust that He will meet our needs. As we persistently pray, we should do so with expectancy for God’s provision. The simple fact is that, accompanied by the reading of His Word, prayer is the venue that God has chosen to welcome us into daily communion with Him, and He intends to answer our requests in accordance with His will. Charles Spurgeon said about praying expectantly, “There is no need to go beating around the bush…I believe in business prayers. I mean prayers in which you take to God one of the many promises which He has given us in His Word, and expect it to be fulfilled as certainly as we look for the money to be given us when we go to the bank to cash a check.” As R.A. Torrey said, “Prayer is the hand that takes to ourselves the blessings that God has already provided in His Son.” So then, let us pray!

s soon as dinner was over, Lance ran to the telephone to call his friend Eric. He and Eric had just come back from a threeday camping trip with a group of boys from church.

"Hi!" Lance said when his friend answered the phone. "It was fun to eat at home again, right?" "Yeah," said his friend, "but I had gotten used to sand in my food. I sort of missed it." The boys laughed at the things they had done and talked about some of the other boys they had met.

"And you said you were the pitcher on our ball team," said Eric. "I've never seen you pitch." "I did at practice one time," said Lance. "I think you told a lot of lies," said Eric. "I didn't lie," said Lance. "I just stretched the truth a little." "My dad says that when you stretch the truth it breaks," said Eric. "And when you break the truth it's a lie." "I didn't hurt anyone," said Lance.

"Why did you tell all those guys that your dad was a doctor?" asked Eric.

"I like you better when you act normal," said Eric. "You kept trying to be a big shot."

"I thought he was a salesman."

"I was just having some fun," said Lance.

"But he sells things to hospitals, so it's all the same thing," said Lance.

"But it's more fun to be real," said Eric. "I know what your dad does and what kind of house you live in, and I know you aren't very good at baseball. But you're my friend; you don't have to pretend to be something special. Besides that, we are Jesus' friends, and that makes us special. We don't have to try to be something more than we really are."

"It's not the same thing to me," said Eric. "I heard you say a lot of things that weren't true." "Like what?" asked Lance. "You said you lived in a great big house with a swimming pool," said Eric. "Our house is big enough," said Lance, "and we have a wading pool that we put up every summer."

How to Put Your Assets in the Right Places

’m often asked the question, “Where should I start with investing?” and the answer (or answers) to this question are—in my opinion—pretty straightforward and usually consistent in most situations. I’ll advise the person to begin by investing for retirement. If you have a 401k plan or other retirement plan available through your employer, and especially if the employer offers a “match” where they contribute money into your account to match all or part of the money you personally contribute, then by all means take advantage of this employer match since it’s “free money” and a guaranteed return of 50% or 100% on every dollar you contribute toward your retirement plan. But of course the conversation doesn’t end there, but rather merely begins. Once someone has decided to start investing in an employer’s retirement plan, there are usually many options for doing so. For most workers under age 55, I would recommend investing all or most of one’s retirement contributions into the stock market using mutual funds. Stocks have historically provided

the best rate of return on investment, and mutual funds offer instant diversification by spreading your money around in hundreds of company stocks so that you aren’t taking too much risk in any one company’s stock. A stock index fund in the S & P 500 is usually a good choice for new investors. The S & P 500 Index is simply a collection of the 500 biggest U.S. company stocks, giving you a little slice of ownership in nearly every big company most of us have ever heard of. Best of all, a mutual fund like this meets the wise old adage of KISS investing or “Keep It Simple, Stupid.” Most of us can understand that we’re buying a little bit of Coca Cola, Microsoft, Apple, Wal-Mart, ExxonMobil, etc. What if your employer doesn’t offer a 401k or other retirement plan? Simple: create your own plan using a Roth IRA where you can invest money toward retirement and then withdraw it during retirement completely tax-free. Again, you have countless choices on how you wish to invest your money, and what you wish to invest your money in. And again, I would recommend

a simple stock market index fund like the S & P 500 index as a good choice for starting out. There are many companies online that offer these types of retirement plans for no upfront fees or commissions, and with very low-cost annual fees. Just look around online to compare first. If you’re not comfortable with the do-it-yourself method, and if you prefer a more handson approach, there are many local financial advisors who would be happy to help you set up a retirement account or other investment plan. Just remember that you’ll pay a commission or other fee for their services, as one might reasonably expect. In closing, remember Proverbs 17:16 which says, “Why does a fool have money in his hand with no intention of buying wisdom?” In other words, all of our investing success and wealth will be meaningless without godly wisdom to help us be good stewards of these blessings. Case in point, 65% of lottery prize winners are totally bankrupt within ten or twelve years. Even stranger—the larger their jackpot prize, the faster they go bankrupt!

was raised by a single mom who did a fantastic job. She played the role of mom and dad like a pro! The only problem was that she was indeed not a man and therefore lacked some fundamental attributes that were needed to teach me and my brother what it meant to be a man. I was taught how to throw a football by my best friend. Actually, most of the things I learned about sports was through my best friend Jeremy and his dad. I learned how to shave by watching razor commercials. Don't even ask about how or where or when I learned about the “birds and the bees”. Needless to say when I got married I had no real knowledge of what it meant to be a husband let alone a father. Compound my lack of knowledge about being a man with the fact that now I am working for the State Of Tennessee Department of Children's Services dealing primarily with juvenile delinquents. I would go into full on panic attacks every time my bride would even bring up the word children because I was afraid my kids would grow up to be just like the juvenile delinquents I deal with. Fast forward some years for the sake of time and I have two wonderful, healthy boys that I now have the responsibility of raising to be productive members of society and Godly men. If you were paying attention at the beginning you know that I barely know what a man is let alone how to raise one. Then God heard my cries and sent a wonderful Bible study to my church called "Men's Fraternity." In this Bible study, I learned some great things about what it means to be a real man of God. How real men accept responsibility, reject passivity, and lead courageously. The problem I had was how to teach this incredible stuff to my kids early so that they wouldn't have the struggles I did growing up. I decided that the best way I could teach my boys the true meaning of being a man was to start with small concepts and just say them over and over and over. I call them “our motto's”. The boys know that at some point between the drive from our house to their school, they must recite “our motto's” before they can get out of the car. Our first motto is “I will follow directions the first time given.” This one is not so much about being a man as it is that I want my children to not have to be told by their teachers five times to do something before it gets done. I want them to learn that no matter how high July up the corporate ladder they

soar there will always be someone telling them what to do and it is always best to do it the first time. I want those words flowing through their minds so that when they are teens I hopefully won't have to kill them in order to get them to clean their rooms. Lastly though, I want my boys to listen to their heavenly Father and be able to say “Wherever You lead, I will follow”. Our second motto is “I will accept responsibility for my own actions”. I got this one directly from Men's Fraternity but I wanted to start with a small portion of this huge concept. The way my boys understand this motto now is that if they do something wrong and they are asked about it they are to say they committed this wrong and pay the consequences for their actions. I work for the Department of Children's Services dealing mostly with juvenile delinquents. I hear all the time how the crime they committed was not their fault or that it was not their fault that they failed a drug screen. I was told once by a teen that stole a car that is was the owners fault he stole the car because they left their keys in the ignition. I want my boys to understand that being a real man means accepting responsibility for their actions good or bad. I want them to be men of integrity but I also want them to accept consequences for bad behavior. Our third motto is “I will lead by example”. I chose this one because leading courageously does not mean much to an eight and six

year old. I want them to learn that sometimes leading by example means to do what is right even when no one else is doing the right thing. My boys are learning that leading by example does not mean asking friends to play the games their way or no way but showing them that sometimes leading takes the form of service or following. Our last motto is by far their favorite. Not because it is filled with awesome scriptural power but because it is fun to say. It is “If you are early you are on time, if you are on time you are late and if you are late you are fired”. I came up with this one purely because being late is a pet peeve of mine and I want my boys to be punctual. “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it”. Proverbs 22:6. I have decided that what this verse means to me is that I am going to use these small easy motto's daily as a way to raise real men of God. I will take these and other things they need to know and make them easy and fun to learn so that when they are old or when they have children they can then teach them the ways of our family. Do my boys get it right 100% of the time or even fully understand what our mottos mean? No. But, it is a work in progress and hopefully one day they will get it and pass on those virtues to their families. “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15.

Growing Lily A

t 21 weeks pregnant, I laid in a dark ultrasound room eager to get another glimpse of my baby. My husband and I have two boys, a 4 year old and a 21 month old, and had recently learned we were expecting our first little girl. We already knew her name would be Lily. The sound of her heartbeat filled the room as they checked on her. The ultrasound technician and I chatted as we oohed and ahhed over her arms, legs and nose. As the exam moved on, the room became quiet as the technician began to concentrate on something she was seeing. She said nothing to me, but called in several colleagues to consult about what she was seeing. From the feeling in the room, I knew something was wrong. Tears began to spill over, but they could only tell me that they were looking at some abnormalities within my placenta. Fear and despair gripped my heart. I would have to wait to hear from my doctor and was ushered down to his office. I felt so alone. My husband was rushing to get there, knowing that something was wrong but not knowing what. My doctor came in and was quiet for a moment while he looked everything over. He began talking and a dark cloud seemed to move into the room. I heard words more than sentences. Blood Pooling. Hemorrhaging. Oxygen loss. Hospitalization. Shots. Strict bed rest. High risk doctors. Abruptions. I was sobbing by now, and he came over and hugged me and said he’d do everything he could. I was sent straight to the lab and my husband arrived. I could hardly explain what was happening. They think I’m hemorrhaging. Lily is at risk. I’m at risk. Our life is about to change. An hour in the lab and they took around 14 vials of blood to verify what they’d seen. On the way out the phlebotomist grabbed me and hugged me and whispered in my ear to pray—she will pray. We went to our van to head home and wait for a phone call to see what was next. My husband grabbed my hand and said—let’s pray. So he did. He prayed that Lily would be safe, that I would be safe, and that our family would remain in-tact. And then through tears he said—but if you choose not to deliver us from this, we will continue to serve You. We drove home to wait and notified those closest to us what was going on. The call came in a little after 5:00pm that indeed there was a placental abruption and that I was hemorrhaging. We would have to wait and see if the abruption would stop or cause further damage. There was nothing more they could do so early in my pregnancy. Fear took over my heart again. Thoughts of losing our baby girl, losing my life and leaving my boys. How would my husband care not only for my boys but now also for me while working full time? How could we afford fulltime daycare starting immediately? Who was going to cook, clean, get groceries? How will we manage for up to 20 weeks of this? How will the boys understand what is happening? How

will God get us through this? Almost immediately we began to get offers of help. People we knew, some we barely knew, some we didn’t know at all began bringing us meals. Every dinner for the next 37 nights was provided by someone else. We have no family in town, this was all coming from the community around us. Childcare was provided. By the next morning, someone had called and paid fulltime daycare for us for a month for both boys. Kind words, prayers, cards, and support lifted us up. A couple of weeks into our situation, I had a dream. I dreamt that at my next appointment even more complications surfaced with Lily. I dreamt that we were given little hope. We were devastated and in complete despair. In my dream, fast forward a week and we were at my next checkup to get an update. But, we weren’t at my doctor’s office this time. We were at our church. We looked out and there was a sea of people there...faces we knew (close family and friends), there were faces we barely knew, faces we didn’t know at all, the cashier I always use at the grocery store, the phlebotomist that is always so sweet to me at my doctor’s office, neighbors, faces from our hometowns, from our parents churches...it seemed like everyone possible was there. As we waited on the results, some were praying, some were singing, some were standing hopeful and watching. A woman I knew was there, physically holding me, helping me to stand. Then first very quietly, and then very loudly the faces began chanting “Grow Lily Grow! Grow Lily Grow!” The dream ended. I didn’t get to learn the results of the test everyone was waiting for. I didn’t get to see if the news was good or bad. But what I felt in the dream and even now so vividly was all the support that had surrounded us. Everyone that was praying, hopeful, and cheering for us and sweet Lily. I felt the strength of community and prayer, the support that allowed us to stand when we couldn’t on our own. A passage in Exodus 17:10-13 is brought to my mind. Moses was holding his staff in his hands above his head while the Israelites fought a battle. But as his hands grew weary and began to drop, the Israelites began to lose the battle. Aaron and Hur went to him and as his arms grew tired they pushed a stone under him for him to sit on and then one on each side of him stood and held his arms up for him when he was unable to do so on his own. This represents to us what is unfolding in our lives. Those around us, knowingly and unknowingly sent by God, have held up our arms when we have been unable to stand on our own. We have overwhelmingly felt His presence and love through those around us. As I write this I am now 26 weeks pregnant. We are still taking it week by week and there have been up and downs. We don’t know what is around the corner, but are hopeful and know that no matter what, He is faithful. Still our prayer is “Grow, Lily, Grow.”

Picnic Time By Deana Thompson

breeze gently blew from off the lake, where a boat was lazily anchored. Not a house was in sight; just God’s beautiful nature as far as the eye could see. The grass was green and inviting, as the crowd sat down—some in small groups, some in larger groups. People began talking among themselves about the weather, their families, and what the preacher had last preached. Fresh sandwich food was passed around to everyone in the group, and they ate until they could not hold anymore—and still there was food left over! Sounds like the perfect picnic, doesn’t it? Nature. Green grass. A gentle breeze. Loads of food. Actually, it is the account of Jesus feeding over five thousand people (Mark 6)—a very large picnic, to be sure. And this isn’t the only time Jesus had a picnic; the Bible records several other instances where He ate in the great outdoors (see Matthew 15:36 and John 21:12-13). Picnics are relaxing times to spend with friends and families. They are times to play ball with the kids, to wade through streams and hike over hills, to go beyond surficial chatter and discuss issues that matter most. Picnics are times to get away from technology and to return to nature, to leave the manmade and partake in the God-made. Summer is a wonderful time to have picnics, whether they are by the seashore, atop a mountain, near a forest stream, or amidst a vast meadow. Add to this special place some special people and a basket full of delicious food, and you have yourself a very memorable time. The food does not have to be gourmet, but fresher and more natural tends to be better suited for a picnic under clear blue skies. Pack some fresh bread (either homemade or deli-made) and cold cuts with all the trimmings—including a jar of baby dill pickles! Add some favorite vegetable strips and a bowl of cold, cubed watermelon. Slip in a plate of deviled eggs and a platter of fresh lemon cookies. Fill up a beverage cooler with ice water, put it all in the trunk, and drive off into the great unknown for an afternoon of fun, relaxation, and memories!

Pineapple Pecan Coleslaw

Deviled Eggs Yield: 12 servings

Yield: 8 servings

6 eggs ¼ c. mayonnaise 1 tsp. mustard ½ tsp. vinegar ¼ tsp. pepper 1/8 tsp. salt Paprika 1.Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil, and boil for 15 minutes. Cool the eggs by running cold water into the pan several times, pouring out the water after each time. 2.Peel the eggs and halve them lengthwise. Remove the yolks with a spoon and place them in a bowl. Mash the yolks with a fork or a pastry blender. 3.Add mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, pepper and salt; mix well. 4.Stuff the egg white halves with the yolk mixture, using either a decorator bag with a large star tip or a spoon. 5.Lightly sprinkle the tops of the eggs with paprika.

Fruit Salad Yield: 10 servings

1/2 head cabbage 1/2 cup pecan pieces (8 ounce) can pineapple 1/2 cup coleslaw dressing

Pinwheel Mini Sandwiches Yields: 10 servings

5 flour tortillas (10 inch) 3 Tbsp. cream cheese 6 cheese slices 6 slices favorite lunch meat 5 large lettuce leaves

1. Drain the pineapple reserving 1/4 cup juice (or more if you want the slaw sweeter) Place the juice and the slaw dressing in a large bowl and whisk until blended. 2. Cut Cabbage finely into strips 3. Stir in the remaining ingredients until evenly coated. Chill for 1hours. If it seems dry add a bit more slaw dressing. It will create more juice the longer it chills.

Lemon Cookies Yield: 24 cookies

1. SPREAD tortillas with cream cheese; top with cheese, meat and lettuce. 2. ROLL up tightly; cut each into 8 slices. Secure with toothpicks, if desired.

1 pint strawberries – sliced 1 pound seedless grapes, halved 3 kiwis, peeled and sliced 1 Gala Apple – cored and sliced 1 (21 ounce) can peach pie filling 1. In a large bowl, combine the strawberries, apple, grapes, kiwis, and bananas. Gently mix in peaches. Chill for 1 hour before serving.

½ c. unsalted butter, softened ¾ c. raw sugar 1 egg yolk Finely grated zest of 1 lemon, or 1½ tsp. 1 Tbsp. pure lemon extract ¾ c. all-purpose flour ¼ tsp. salt 1. Preheat the oven to 350F. 2. In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugar on high speed with an electric mixer until it is light and fluffy. 3. Add the egg yolk, zest and extract. Mix well. 4. Add the flour and salt. Blend with the mixer on low speed until the dry ingredients are moistened, and it forms a thick, smooth batter. 5. Drop heaping teaspoons of dough 2” apart onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 15-18 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly brown around the edges. (They tend to spread out and become rather “lacy.”) July 6. cool for 5 minutes, and then transfer them to a wire rack.

ne of the most amazing facts about the Founding Fathers is this—the one referred to as the “voice” of the revolution (John Adams) and the one referred to as the “pen” of the revolution (Thomas Jefferson) both died on the same day, July 4th, 1826, exactly 50 years from the formation of the United States of America in 1776. Some would call this a mere “coincidence”; I prefer to call it a “God-incidence,” a sign of the Creator's providential care and divine involvement in the formation of this unique and blessed nation.

It is doubly amazing to see that the number 50 actually represents “liberty” in Biblical symbolism. Why? Because every 50 years, the Jewish people were commanded to celebrate a special year called the “Year of Jubilee.” This was a year when prisoners were set free, debts were forgiven and land was restored to its original owners. Great joy reigned over all the land. Interestingly, a phrase from the section of Scripture describing that recurring event is even found on one of our most beloved national emblems, the Liberty Bell:

“Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land to all the inhabitants thereof.” (Lev. 25:10) This double-sign, in my opinion, is doubleproof that it was God, and not just man, that raised up this bastion of freedom for His purposes to be accomplished in the earth. Not only have we been the natural bread-basket of the world; we have been the spiritual bread-basket of the world as well. We cannot lose sight of this “calling” in the face of so much anti-American sentiment and even the disappointment we may feel concerning our own government. Yes, there have been abuses of both political and military power and selfish corporate agendas that have fouled the waters of our influence among the nations. But there are still many rivers of living water, flowing from multiplied thousands of ministries, out of the bedrock of this republic, who have changed the world in significant ways: financially, educationally, socially, governmentally, and most of all, spiritually. Now our freedoms are being challenged in many ways. More than ever, it is time for the church to arise, on both a local and national level, and claim our nation for the Kingdom of God. For the sake of our heritage and the ones who sacrificed to pass it on to us, we must increase our efforts. For the sake of our children, we must strive to purify our society and culture. For the sake of the Kingdom of God, we must keep preaching the good news and lifting up the Name of Jesus. The Liberty Bell was actually created in 1753, after two failed attempts. This speaks a very important truth to us: that we should never give up on an ideal. Instead may we tenaciously hold on to our vision. It is also important to understand that the Liberty Bell was first ordered as a 50-year memorial of William Penn’s extraordinary “Charter of Privileges” in Pennsylvania. On this July 4th, let us unite together in prayer that God will heal our land by sending another “Great Awakening,” not only taking us back to our roots, but taking us deeper than ever into a culture that is both God-honoring and Bible-based. That is our only hope. No political, social, or economic program will cure our ills unless we experience another great outpouring from the throne room of God. The God of heaven has done it before; He can do it again!

Running

used to hate running. I did not understand why anyone would chose to run, on purpose. My fitness level has varied over the years and even during my most active periods of my life, if an aerobics instructor asked our class to run, I would cringe and hate every second of it. But my attitude changed last year. My sister and several friends I knew were doing a "couch-to-5-k" program to train themselves to go from no exercise to being able to run a 5-k, which is 3.1 miles. My husband had also began dabbling in running a few years ago and I could see how he enjoyed it. I thought I would try to run on a treadmill one day at the Y just see if I could make it five minutes. To my surprise, I was able to run ten minutes straight before slowing down to walk. My sister said that was excellent for a newbie and that really encouraged me. I kept going to the gym and running on the treadmill a few days per week, each time trying to run just a minute or two longer than the last time. A couple weeks later, I learned my church was hosting a 5-k race for all abilities a few weeks away. I decided I was going to do the race and officially began training. I really didn't know how to train, so I sought out some advice from some runner friends at church, Jay and Michelle Chapman. They were very encouraging and helpful. I prepared myself for running hills. I set a personal goal of finishing the 5-k race without stopping to walk. I wasn't concerned with the time, as much as I was with the goal of running without stopping. My husband signed up to do the race, too. Because of our family and work schedules, we are not able to train together, but it is still nice to be able to enjoy a sport together with my spouse. When we arrived at the church the morning of the race, I was very excited and nervous. It was drizzling and I worried the race might get cancelled and all my hard work was in vain. But it never got worse than a drizzle and the race was still scheduled. I stretched and got my music ready on my iPhone as the racers huddled at the starting line. I always run to music. Also, whenever I run outside, I use an app called RunKeeper, which uses GPS to track my progress. It tells me

in my earphones every five-minute interval what my distance and pace is. It is very helpful so I can determine how far I've gone and how much I have left to finish a race. Usually the last five minutes is the hardest and I pray for strength. It took everything I had to make my goal of running without stopping during this race, especially when we had to run uphill on the giant hill on Stuart Road. I even prayed out loud for God to push me up the hill. He did! I made my goal of completing the race without stopping to walk. It felt great to cross the finish line and feel my hard work had paid off and to appreciate and thank God for giving me the ability to run the race. After the race, awards were handed out and I was most inspired by an award that went to Mr. Raymond Simpson, a dedicated member of First Baptist, who completed the race at the age of 78. There are all types and abilities of runners, but a common characteristic I've noticed is they have determination, discipline, persistence, and perseverance. I usually have a fair amount of those qualities, but when I'm in the middle of training or the middle of a race and I am worn out and feel like I can't go on, I remind myself of scripture like Isaiah 40:31, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Another favorite of mine is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." It is amazing to see God help give me strength when I need it most, not only while running, but in life as well. Since my first 5-k race in May 2012, I have completed three other 5-k races. My goal for each of those was to not only run without stopping, but to complete a 5-k in 30 minutes or less. I was disappointed when I did not meet either of those in my second race, but Michelle Chapman reminded me all courses are different, some tougher than others. I came very close to meeting my goal during my last 5-k this past spring. I ran without stopping and my time was 30:50. I hope to keep training and meet my goal later this year. Sometimes I still tell my husband I can't believe I run, on purpose.

rmed men block the road. They order everyone out of the car. The driver says, “No!” and then crumples when one of the men slams a rock against his head. The car drives off with the carjackers inside, leaving the occupants, one a small girl of ten, stranded in the middle of nowhere. Fiction? Made-up stories? Nope. The girl was Jessica Jansma, a kid living in Papua New Guinea. Jessica (or Jess, as she likes to be called), was born in the United States, the daughter of two missionaries-in-training. Jess’ family left the U.S. for Brazil a year later, and, after spending half a year in the city of Manaus so her mom could learn Portugese, moved to the jungle. Her family stayed there for four years, evangelizing and converting the indigenous people. They learned the tribe’s language, and taught them about Jesus. Some of Jess’ best memories of this time were taking canoe trips with the tribal people and learning to ride a bike in the middle of the Amazon jungle. However, when she was six, her family had to leave the tribe, and they moved across the world to Papua New Guinea. PNG, as it’s commonly known, is the eastern half of New Guinea, right above Australia. There, they stayed at a support base in the eastern highlands of the country, along with about one hundred other families. Her dad worked in the computer department, and her mom stayed at home managing the household. Jess didn’t have much of a chance to really get to know the indigenous people of the country, but when she did talk with them, they were very friendly. There are over 800 “heart languages” in PNG, but there is also one main trade language that covers the basics and allows people to carry conversations with each other; that is the language that Jess learned while she was there. It was while the Jansmas were in PNG that the hijacking happened. It all began when Jess was in a Jeep going to a friend’s house for a sleepover. Suddenly, the vehicle stopped. Seven men were in front of it, blocking the way! They told Jess and the other July people to get out, and knocked out the man driving when he 2013

resisted slightly. After they drove off in the Jeep, Jess and the rest of the occupants had to hitchhike back into town. Months afterward, Jess kept experiencing ear pains. They got so bad that someone suggested putting a tube in it to relieve the pressure, but several months after that, the pain returned. Finally, after months of increasing mental and physical problems and flying to different countries and medical centers to try to solve the problem, a clinic in Minnesota diagnosed it as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). By the grace of God, the problem stopped, and Jess finally overcame the disorder. Now, that story shines as a beacon of faith and courage in her life. The Jansmas stayed in Papua New Guinea for seven years, working to further the mission field in the country. However, God called them to move somewhere else, and when Jess was thirteen, they moved back to Brazil. Looking back on it now, she definitely believes that they were doing exactly what God wanted them to do. There was initially some bitterness over the decision on her part, because she was having to leave everyone she knew; after seeing the attitudes of the kids in Brazil, though, and experiencing a change of heart, she was glad that they moved. The people at the mission base in PNG were, as a whole, more trendy and modern than the people in Brazil, but the Brazilians were more fit and outdoorsy, using their free time to play sports and swim instead of watching movies and playing video games. After spending half a year in Manaus, they moved to a small village on the very bank of the Amazon River! The village is basically a boarding school for children whose parents were in the field doing missionary work; there were about twenty high schoolers there when Jess and her family arrived. According to Jess, “They seemed to be tight knit, they all knew each other really well, and they were really good at soccer.” However, soon after the move, she was able to make some great friends among the kids there at the school. Although it’s her parents that are officially doing the mission work, Jess is also working to spread the gospel herself. Along with some

of the other students at the school, she leads a Bible study every week for other teenage kids who live along the river, most of whom would never hear the gospel if it weren’t for Jess and her friends. Currently, they are working through a chronological study of the Bible with these kids, and they are making progress. The hardest part of spreading the gospel in Brazil is that the people aren’t open to friendships until they respect and build a relationship with you. One of the ways they break the ice is by playing soccer with peo-

ple downriver. When they aren’t in school or evangelizing, the kids at the boarding school are fishing, playing soccer on the basketball court (it gets intense sometimes), reading books, playing or listening to music, hiking into the jungle, and swimming in the Amazon River, which is so close to the village that it sometimes rises all the way up to their houses in the rainy season. Although she was born in the States and spent the majority of her life in Papua New Guinea, Jess calls this place home, and it’s right where she wants to be. Now almost sixteen years old, Jess Jansma has seen and done more things than most people ever even dream of--who else has to take a boat to buy groceries every week? Each part of her life, every move to a different continent, has taught Jess something about life in general, about God’s plan for her life, and about the love He wants her to show to others. And even though her life is just starting to unfold, she is solidly set on the straight and narrow path, spreading the Good News to every new person she meets.

espect, ethics, example and honesty are words that I have learned and actions that describe many outdoorsmen that I have had the pleasure of meeting, hunting and fishing with over my 44 years of existance. Many of these men, and women, have taught me a great deal and invested the love and desire to pursue, within the legal limits of the law, many great North American game animals. Many times however, I come in contact with people that do not share this same viewpoint. One such incident just recently happened on November 2 in South Carolina. It was a three day in-the-rut hunt that I have looked forward to all year. This was personal property that my dad and I have had since 1989. It is a small piece of approximately 27 acres that has an internal field of 15 acres. I arrived that afternoon around 2:30pm from Tennessee. I drove through gate and stopped in my normal parking spot. As I was sitting in my truck I noticed the Gum tree in front of my truck limbed up. As I walked around the briars there was a climbing stand (#1) at the base of the tree. It is amazing the emotions and feelings that surge through your body when you encounter a wrong like this. I began to walk this path and found climbing stand #2 60 yards further away. A little further than that and I found a make shift ground blind with a new camo chair in it. I am now beside myself in disbelief. Wanting to hunt that evening hunt and watch the place I went to the stand. It was an unusual evening due to that when the does stepped out, only three, they kept looking weirdly in different directions. I have never seen this behavior on this property, so I chocked it up to the rut being on. The next morning I was back in the stand hunting and watching. Again, the does came out but were skittish and did the same weird behavior as the night before. About 10:00am I got down and walked that part of the field where they were looking. I could not believe it there they were, climbing stand #3 and further down climbing stand #4 and just about another 100yds climbing stand #5. All 6 stand locations all within 250 yards of each other. UNBELIEVEABLE! After coming to my senses, I began trying to formulate a plan of action. I contacted the neighboring land owners to start discussions with them and to inquire who the heads of their leases were. I also made contact with the South Carolina DNR Wildlife Officer just for safe keeping and communication insight. It was easy to find out who they were due to three of the five stands had names on them. I won’t say much about that. Over the next 4 hours we had discussions on ethics, legal law enforcement steps and property boundaries. This involved future consequences and contact with the South Carolinas Operation Game Thief avenues. I gave all the equipment back as a handshake of respect given - and hope of future respect received. That evening my brother-in-law and good friend came up from Florida to join me. Though disappointment set in about not being able to hunt over an unspoiled area, I knew this Ju uly

little area always produced. Over the next day and a half more does began to be seen. I freshened up the existing scrapes and began to use some Tinks Scent bombs. However, still no bucks. It was Saturday. Our last morning to hunt. I got the guys in the stands an hour and a half before day light. The days before the weather had changed from cool and still, to warm, then to rainy, then to very windy and now back to windy and cool. We were to get down at 9:00am to pack up and head home. I came down from my climbing stand at 8:45am and was back at the truck. At 8:55am, I heard my brother-in-law shoot. Within in minute he was trying to contact me by phone. After 3 failed call attempts, he texted me “ Big 8 let’s find it”. I drove the truck into the edge of the field and saw he was walking towards me. He shared that he put his head down to thank Christ for a great hunt, a beautiful morning and just to have the ability to hunt. When he lifted his head and looked to the left there he stood. A quick shot and it was over. We drove to the area where the deer was last seen. There was no sign of blood and no hoof prints. They began to search the field and I noticed a lot of pine needles pushed up on the edge of the field. I walked into the edge of the woods and saw more pine needles pushed up approximately 20 yards further. Stopping at that area, I knelt down to survey the area, there he was - big, beautiful and massive. Calling for my brother-inlaw and friend they came running. There laying before us was a 190lb 10 point buck. Wow! What an emotional experience. Through all that mess of discussing trespassing, poaching and meetings, and then being given a complete opposite opportunity in success at harvesting the largest buck ever taken from the property. I realized real quickly I had put Christ in a box. I realized that I was trying to do it in my power and not His. He showed up and brought with Him Mr. Big. Christ does things like that every day and in all areas of our life. We just have to be open to Him and His way...yes, even in and through the great outdoors.

ne Sunday afternoon as I sat down to read the newspaper, I suddenly realized that my wedding band was not on my hand. Oh my, how devastated I was! After more than thirty years of marriage, I no longer had the symbol of my love and commitment for my wife. Paulette and I recalled where we had been previously to see if that might trigger a memory of where it could be. Earlier that day after Sunday school and worship service, we had a church-wide Thanksgiving dinner at Cleveland High School. I remember that I helped clean up, grabbing up disposable table cloths and other debris and stuffing them down into large trash cans. In my heart I knew that my ring lay buried beneath tons of waste, never to be seen again. It was so dramatic for me that I felt naked without my ring. It didn’t change my love for my wife, but I was despondent that I no longer had this time-honored and universally accepted token. In desperation, I took a plastic coated metal tie from a bag of bread and twisted it around my ring finger so I could feel something there. Paulette was not impressed with my feeble attempt to compensate for my lack of security in wanting to wear my wedding band. She believed in my loyalty to her whether or not I had a one on my finger. She simply said, “Take that nasty thing off and let’s go buy another ring.” In reality, the commercial value of the old ring was little. As a college student when we got married, I had little money. In fact, Paulette is the one who actually bought our wedding bands because she was the one with a job at the time. However, the emotional value to me was priceless. But we did go buy another one. Then I had something that I could feel with my thumb. Time went by and major events started taking place in our lives. The first most significant one was my retirement from the same job I had for more than 35 years. One year after our marriage, I had graduated and begun a civil engineering career with the USDA Forest Service. Friends and family came into town and joined my coworkers for a retirement meal. I continued to July feel the new wedding band with my thumb.

We began the excitement of adjusting to retirement life. But when spring arrived, I realized that I had not retired from household work as I began the normal yard activities that accompany the arrival of warmer weather. During what was probably my first time to mow the yard that season, I was pushing the mower in and around the bushes inside the fenced back yard near the corner where the driveway reaches the road. As I maneuvered the twists and turns, something shiny caught my attention. I stopped, bent over for a closer look and with breathless excitement, I picked up my long lost wedding band! Needless to say, I rushed inside with more excitement than a child on Christmas morning and shared my find with Paulette. Neither of us has been one to feel the need to “renew” our wedding vows, but that day it was almost as if I had renewed my wedding vows as I put on my old wedding band. Apparently, as I was trimming the hedges the previous fall, it had slipped off my hand, possibly the day before I became aware of its being gone. But God aimed the perfect ray of light that spring day to reflect toward my eyes and catch my attention so I would find my lost treasure. In Luke 15, Jesus so eloquently describes the parable of The Lost Coin. Although I didn’t light a lamp and diligently sweep the house searching for my lost ring like the woman did who lost her coin, I do believe that God provided a golden ray of sunlight that not only revealed my lost ring, but also reminded me of His unfailing love. He is concerned about our day-to-day well being, but more importantly He is concerned about our future status. There is something that is far more valuable than a lost ring or any other earthly treasure. And that is an everlasting, eternal soul. Let us never, ever give up hope that one day we will see all our lost children and loved ones found as the ray of His love shines on their hearts and reveals the truth to them and they accept Him. Then we will experience pure joy of seeing a real treasure that once was lost but now is found. That will be something really worth rejoicing over.

It’s Summer……..Now What? (Surviving summer break with special needs children) By Lana Payne

t makes me laugh, and truthfully, a little annoyed, when I hear parents express such excitement that school is out for summer. The kids are home, you get to relax all summer, go on vacation and just be carefree. Sounds wonderful to me! I’m joining in the cheering!! Oh wait…..I have special needs children – this changes everything. I am a mom with three boys, two of which have special needs. As much as I would love to enjoy summer like some people, it’s just not that simple, especially when autism is involved. Children with autism usually don’t do well with change or an interruption in their routine and summer can be difficult. I struggled through several summers, sinking into depression, until I changed my thinking and my focus. I have found ways to make it a little easier to get through this break and even ENJOY the summer. Yes, it is possible if you’re just creative and change your mindset. I will just share with you some things that I have found that have helped me. I don’t offer any “professional” advice, just mom advice. In order to keep somewhat of a routine, my boys attend summer programs through the school system. Some programs offer specific special education services while others do not. My boys attend both – one of them goes to a special education program and the other goes to the “typical” summer program at his school. Only you can determine your child’s level of ability and you know what is best for your child and where they would feel the most comfortable. Check with the local school systems, the YMCA, and local churches who offer week long summer camps, VBS, etc. One thing that I have learned is that even when I don’t feel like it, if I will unleash the kid in me and get out and play with my kids and join in the fun, it makes things much better because everyone is happy. The kids are having fun and I am as well and I realize I have more energy than I thought I did! That’s a VERY good thing. Somehow, when I do this, it takes my mind off the stress of not having a typical summer break and I actually begin to have as much fun as the kids, or more. Yes, I would be the one that as the kids are climbing out of the pool to go back inside, I’m saying “Hey, where are you going?!” I know that at times, things can seem overwhelming no matter WHAT you do, and those are the times I realize I need a break; a break for ME. Let me just tell you – NEVER feel guilty about that! You have to take care of yourself to be the best mom you can be and sometimes you just need to be refreshed by taking a little time for yourself. If you need permission for that, just go back

and read this article and say, “Oh yeah, there is another mom who does this, so I can take a little break and not feel guilty.” I realize that may not be easy if you are home all day with your kids, by yourself, and you can’t get away. First I would say, go into another room and plug in some headphones and listen to music. That always works for me, but music just always soothes my soul. Just take a “time out” for yourself. If you just go sit outside by yourself for 5 minutes and just BREATHE, just do that. Sometimes, I just need to step away from the current chaos around me, clear my head and breathe. As cliché as this may sound, it actually does help me if I remind myself (while I’m taking this little breather) that my kids will not be little for long and that they are getting older, maturing and improving, each and every day, even if I have to search for those little improvements. I know that can be difficult and you may say, “My child isn’t improving – they are at the same place they were last year.” Let me just assure you that if you will ask, God will open your eyes to see something that you’ve never noticed before. He allows those moments of grace when we really need it and if we just ask Him. That leads me to my last piece of advice and the most important – prayer, a relationship with God. Let me answer some of the questions you may have or doubts you may have if you’re in the middle of a summer break, and raising special needs children. Does God care about me and does He even see or know what I’m going through? “I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul.” (Ps 31:7) But I am just too tired, too weak and even sad about my life and I just can’t be thankful. “The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” (Ps 28:7) I just don’t know the best things to do for my child(ren). I don’t know what steps to take. I’m sure God doesn’t care about all the details of my life. “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.”

(Ps 37:23-24) There are times, I feel so sad and just feel like nothing will ever change. “Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Ps 30:5) I’m so concerned about my child(ren)’s future. I’m doing all I can do but I worry about it. “But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” My future is in your hands.” (Ps 31:14) The bottom line is – God knows all about your life, He cares about every detail and He loves you and your child(ren). He will be everything you need if you just ask Him. Don’t worry about tomorrow, or the future, He’s got it all under control….so, go out there and ENJOY your summer with your awesome kid(s) and put on your dancing shoes. “You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.” (Ps 30:11)

Here are some tips for helping you prevent complications from medication errors:

• All medications are taken in the correct dosage. • Medications prescribed by different doctors are safe to take at the same time. Medication problems are the leading cause of unnecessary hospitalizations in seniors.

• Fill all prescriptions given to you by your doctor. • Keep all prescriptions in the original package or bottle. • Use an organization system, such as a calendar or alarm to remind you to take your medications on time. • Keep a written list of all medications, including dosage. • Bring your medication list with you on all doctor appointments.

Some patients may benefit from home health care for help with medication teaching and medication reconciliation. Home health nurses are trained to help patients understand what medications they are taking, potential sideeffects to watch for and assistance with setting up a medication organization system. Home health may be appropriate for patients who have just been discharged from the hospital or rehabilitation facility. In addition, patients who have had two or more medication changes are at risk for medication errors and may benefit from home health care. The following example demonstrates the importance of good medication management: Mr. G has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He also has had a knee replacement and has occasionally had swelling in his ankles. Mr. G kept some of his medications in the living room where they were easily accessible. Some other medications were stored in a nearby closet and others in a box in his bedroom. When he had trouble with swelling, he would sometimes take two Lasix pills to get rid of the fluid, even though the bottle said to take only one. He sometimes feels lightheaded and has muscle cramps after taking the Lasix. He would forget to take some of his medications. There were so many, it was hard to keep track. Mr. G met with Tracie, the Safe Transitions Coach at Life Care at Home. Tracie helped Mr. G organize all of his medications in one easy to reach location. In addition, she helped him make a list of all the medications he takes each day and at what time. Mr. G now keeps a daily calendar of his medications. He re-writes his medication list every Sunday night and each time his doctor makes a change to his prescriptions. He also keeps a list of questions for his doctor. If he experiences a problem with a medication or feels that he is not responding to the medication the way the doctor predicted, he knows to call and speak with the nurse at his doctor’s office. Through this process Mr.

G learned that by taking more Lasix than his doctor prescribed, he was causing the muscle cramps and put himself at risk for other health issues. Because he now has a system for organizing and taking his medications and he knows to ask his doctor when he has questions or concerns, Mr. G is taking his medications correctly and feels better. “Working with the coach was helpful to get all of my medications in one place, easily accessible and made me think of questions I had for my doctor.” Mr. DK “It was very helpful going over my medication. Conversations with God: That Thing You Do

bout that indecision problem we talked about the other day; how do you tolerate this embarrassing trait that I have?

Because you have that Abraham thing working for you. What thing?

You know, the whole you go left, then I will go right, if you go right, then I'll go...

You're looking in the wrong place. Abraham made an agreement with me long ago. It was called a covenant or commitment that I would be with him where he went. I would bless the people that blessed him and curse the people that cursed him. His seed would be multiplied. Abraham was committed to being my son and servant wherever he went. It was a promise.

...Oh, the Abraham & Lot story.

Explain to me how this applies to the left/right discussion with Lot?

Yeah, that's it. I recall Abraham struggling all night about this. He wrestled with his indecision. Should he take his family left towards Sodom or right toward the mountains. Left, right, left, right...all night long.

When I reminded Abraham of my covenant he was set free from "indecision". He was going to be my servant wherever. Sodom, in the mountains, Egypt, wherever. My promise went with him.

Now, when I read that passage Abraham didn't make a decision. He left the decision up to Lot. In fact, it reads...

I see. So I'm free to make decisions about where I go as long as I go as your servant.

Genesis 13:9 Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left. 10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: So...the way I read it, Abraham didn't make a decision period!

Oh yes he did! I'm sorry, but I don't find it in this scripture.

No so fast. The Abraham thing is not a freedom or license to go where you please. You're on a journey to my city. To my...destiny for you. As you follow my covenant, your path will follow my lead. You lost me there. I have tried to follow your lead before and I found myself praying all night, trying to discern your will.

Exactly. You're here aren't you? Why do you think I let Abraham wrestle with this all night before I reminded him of the covenant? He found the answer to his indecision through prayer and seeking my face. That sounds good but sometimes I need names, places, hard facts. I don't trust my instincts when you're vague.

Have you ever heard of faith son? By the way, it's hard to please me without it. In case you didn't know, we walk by faith and not by sight. Faith is the way we live. I'm amazed at how my children constantly work hard to keep from exercising faith. I've noticed that. It seems we want to trust ourselves; our own provisions. I know this is offensive to you.

You have no idea! I long for my children to trust in me alone. Abraham had to sell out completely to follow me. That's why we went through that whole commitment/covenant thing. It was a promise that if he would sell out to me, I would take care of him. Ah, so that's why it says that by faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Now you're catching on son. I like what you're reading. Alright, let me see if I understand this. Its called "The Abraham thing". Commitment, Promise, and Faith.

ne of the newest faces to the Cleveland/Chattanooga music scene is a band called Drawn Out. At the core of this Christian quartet is lead singer Bobby Alexandre. His journey leading up to the creation of the group was an unlikely one- yet, completely controlled by God. He grew up in the church, and just like a lot of kids, grew out of church. When he reached his college years, he began taking the idea of a career in music more seriously. As a teen his talents opened doors that allowed him to sing on secular stages, opening up for mainstream acts such as 50 cent, 112, and Ludacris. He was on the fast track to success, going back and forth to Philly, PA recording an album entitled, “The Voice of Reason” (‘Reason’ was his stage name). On January 11th 2003, the vehicle stayed the same, but the “Reason” did not-- he gave up everything he had going for him in the secular industry and became a follower of Christ! It was this life-changing decision that set things in motion for him to eventually attend Lee University and meet the guys that would later form the band, Drawn Out.

Drawn Out, the band, first took shape in the Storms Hall dormitory at Lee University. Roommates John York (guitarist) and Rorey Storr (keyboardist) had both found common interests with Bobby as they toured together with the Evangelistic Singers, a Gospel Choir from Lee. In the fall of 2006 they began to re-write Bobby’s self titled album “Drawn Out”. After Dan York (drummer), John’s brother, joined the band in 2007 they started the long grueling journey of writing and recording a new original album without a budget or a bass player. Over the course of the next 5 years they struggled to write, record, produce and finance an album on their own. For 3 and a half years they traveled back and forth to Louisville, KY every other weekend to have band practices/writing sessions with Rorey Storr. Knowing they were called to write music together they took advantage of every chance they could get to play and minister to people. “It got really tough though” says guitarist John York, “with band members getting married and having kids it was always difficult to organize schedules to be productive”. Although very unfortunate, the events of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti sparked a bright inspiration for the band’s music. Bobby had family that was living in Haiti at the time of the earthquake. Heartbroken by the massive devastation, the band wrote the song “Bad Weather.” It’s a song of hope written for the people of

Haiti and all proceeds will go directly to a foundation set up for the hometown of Bobby’s Father, Fontamara, Haiti. However, the song was never released due to lack of promotional funding. With the help of Good News CM free promotion, Drawn Out will be releasing ‘Bad Weather’ as a single on July 27th, one week before the Good News CM Summer event on the Cleveland Greenway. After losing a keyboardist and gaining a bassist (James Nitz), In 2012 the band was asked to lead worship every Sunday at Cleveland First Baptist Church, starting a new simulcast service with an alternative style of worship. Aside from leading worship every Sunday They recorded and released their first single as a band, ‘400 Pixels’. It is currently available on iTunes. The band has an EP set to release in August 2013 with a full length album to follow. Their mission is simply to spread the Gospel of Christ through music. You can worship with Drawn Out every Sunday morning at Cleveland First Baptist Church in the 9:45 simulcast service.
