The sermons and Bible teachings they heard at church did not go to waste. Your child is involved in that titanic battle for their spiritual lives –they have to discern good from evil. God is working on their character as well and refining them in the process. I encourage you to keep sowing in prayers and by example; even ask others to pray for them. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Gal. 6:7). Gò0dNews for Life Hope for the Mother Considering Abortion re you a woman who is considering abortion? Regardless of how your baby was conceived, are you weighed down with regret and fear, agonizing over what to do? Beloved, if that’s you, please hear me: the baby inside you is not an accident. Only God gives the breath of life. And, even if the circumstances surrounding your conception were less than ideal, God loves you very much— He gave you the baby in your womb. That baby is made in His image, you see. This is the Word of the Lord over that baby: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). The baby in your womb is fearfully and wonderfully made. The Lord already knows what will happen on every single day of your baby’s life; all of his or her days—and yours—are written down in His book. Father God has already called that precious child to his or her occupation and has already endowed that little heart with the capacity to love you and others fiercely and devotedly. Your baby carries the Father’s image, and even now, the hand of the Lord is multiplying your baby’s cells in your womb. He is building every fiber of your baby’s being, with all the brainpower, muscles, joints, and senses that he or she will need to live a long, beautiful life on this earth. Don’t cut it short. Please, beloved. Don’t cut your baby’s life short. Don’t rob yourself of the opportunity to feel those sweet arms wrapped around you. Don’t rob your baby of his or her opportunity to explore the days of their life that Father has ordained for them. And don’t rob the world of the voice and purpose that this precious little one will bring. You may feel like you can’t take care of your baby, and my heart goes out to you if you feel that way. However, you still have options that will preserve the life of your child. If you will find your local pro-life crisis pregnancy center, they will set you up with resources that can help provide for your needs during your pregnancy and even after the birth.

22 // July 2019

From medical care to free diapers, wipes, and car seats, there is help available for you. Also, if you are interested in letting another family love and raise your precious baby, know that open adoption is the standard these days if you want it. “Open adoption” means you get to see your baby occasionally and you receive pictures and letters about how they are doing—so

you won’t have to wonder and agonize over how your child is doing. Even if you choose another family to raise and love your baby, you can still play a part in their lives. If you have a financial need, non-profit adoption agencies can even help support you while you carry your child. Please, find your local Christian adoption agency, and they will tell you all about it. Beloved, your baby is a gift from God to you. Even if you messed up, your baby is still a gift from God. Please steward it well. And, whether you choose to raise your baby yourself or to find another couple that has been longing to hold a child in their arms, you will always be blessed by your baby’s life. Preserve it and guard it, beloved. There is abundant hope, both for you and for your little one. About The Author

Separated from the Darkness

“Y

ou are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). Last year I went through a time of huge

change. I felt isolated. I felt overlooked. I felt misplaced. I couldn't figure out where I belonged. My mom and I had talked about this several times over about a year, trying to find somewhere for me to be whether it was speech and debate or theatre or some other kind of group. I just needed somewhere for me to belong. One day, Mom had a light bulb moment, and she said “you need to change the way you pray because it is not God's will for you to be invisible. The Bible says 'you ARE the light of the world'. This is how you need to pray. Thank You God that I am the light of the world. Thank you that I am a city set on a hill. Thank you that I have friends. Thank you that I am seen.” About a year earlier I had been involved in a speech and debate club. Honestly, I didn't like it. However, I didn't know where else to go, so I was going to join anyway. But one night as I was praying, I heard the Lord say, “I have something so much better for you.” I want to point out that God didn't say “No.” He said, “I have something better.” And because of that word, I didn't join the speech and debate club. The Sunday after God told me all of that, Movement, our church's dance team, was holding auditions. Although I enjoy the limelight, I have no rhythm, so I wasn't going to go. Then God said, “You need to get up and go to auditions.” First of all, I was surprised God told me to do that because I had been adamant about not joining. My peers and youth leaders had even asked me to join, but I had repeatedly said no. Secondly, I was surprised that I listened. Thirdly, I was surprised that I actually got up and went. During the auditions, I felt like the weight had been lifted

and honest with a group of people before and that they would be so supportive and loving. The fact that God would let me minister for Him is mind blowing to me. It took me a long time to figure out that I was not misplaced. I was not overlooked. I just hadn't found God's place for me. "And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4). God has something so much better for you because HE established you as a light. He has seen you. He has called you good and He has separated you from the darkness.

There are so many things God has taught me through being on this team. I never thought that I could be so open

Summertime In Tennessee The mountain laurel sways with ease along the stream once more. A path of beauty spreads the way for Summer’s open door. Blooms of color fill the land, a carpet all around, each one unique within itself upon a welcomed ground. Fireflies roam up in the night, the twinkle shines above. A tiny hand that reaches out to grab them all with love. Friends and families gather for a picnic at the park. Crickets singing songs to hear when night becomes the dark. Children’s laughter in the air, their shouts are filled with glee. Summertime is special in the hills of Tennessee!

Hoping my mom would have an empty jelly jar to catch fireflies, I’d run into the house and let the screen door smack the back of my heels before I could make it into the kitchen. The Power of Purpose by Shannon Alvey

P

URPOSE is defined as: The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Some say the purpose of life is a

life of purpose. Others have surmised that having a sense of purpose is having a sense of self – A course to plot is a destination to hope for. Recent data from 10 separate studies show a relationship between life purpose and physical health. For example, strong life purpose was associated with reduced risk of mortality and cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or stroke. Having a purpose in life may decrease your risk of dying early. Researchers found the association to be so powerful that having a life purpose appeared

to be more important for decreasing risk of death than drinking, smoking or exercising regularly. We recognize the power of purpose. With that in mind, we have created the Purposeful Day program. The program is designed to provide a variety of activities, life enrichment programs and non-drug therapies giving all of our residents the opportunity to enjoy the highest quality of life possible while encouraging them to find and embrace their purpose. Legacy Village offers a lifestyle that promotes independence and the opportunity to live life at its fullest. We listen to residents and families so that we can tailor a customized service plan that meets the unique needs of each individual. Call me today at 423 829-8500 to learn more about how we can assist you as a friend and support in time of need – caring for and serving your loved one in this season of their life.

From Gloom To Gratitude: 8 Skills To Cultivate Joy You can be taught to have a more positive attitude. And — if you work at it — a positive outlook can lead to less anxiety and depression. 1. Take a moment to identify one positive event each day. 2. Tell someone about the positive event or share it on social media. This can help you savor the moment a little longer. 3. Start a daily gratitude journal. Aim to find little things you’re grateful for, such as a good cup of coffee, a pretty sunrise or nice weather. 4. Identify a personal strength and reflect on how you’ve used this strength today or in recent weeks. 5. Set a daily goal and track your progress. This is based on research that shows when we feel progress towards a goal, we have more positive emotions. The goal should not be too lofty. You want to be able to perceive progress. 6. Try to practice “positive reappraisal”: Identify an event or daily activity that is a hassle. Then, try to reframe the event in a more positive light. Example: If you’re stuck in traffic, try to savor the quiet time. If you practice this enough, it can start to become a habit. 7. Do something nice for someone else each day. These daily acts of kindness can be as simple as giving someone a smile or sending a card to a friend. Research shows we feel better when we’re kind to others. 8. Practice mindfulness by paying attention to the present moment. You can also try a 10-minute breathing exercise that uses a focus on breathing to calm the mind. These skills can definitely help people, no matter what type of stress they are experiencing, even if it is ‘minor’ everyday stress. Reprinted For educational purposes only. Source: Morning Edition

On one of the flights, I heard the captain say that we would be going over some “weather.” Of course, I knew exactly what he meant. I had a window seat, so I was ready to see this weather, and then it happened: we flew over the storm. For the first time in my life, I was above a storm system and could see the lightning below me. Where can we find new hope for the present, let alone our future? Where can our friends, family, and neighbors turn for hope? The Bible fully understands that hope is vital to all living people. Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick; but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life” (KJV). Hope outside of Christ is never realized. It was June 1, 2003. Fred, who was 28 at the time, was driving to the store in Richmond, California when a bullet put the brakes on his plans for his life: instantly. There was a group of thugs hanging out on the corner as usual, but this time, one of the young men stepped into the street with a gun, fired a shot, and the bullet struck Fred in the back of his head. S

ummertime is all about eating fresh, bright, and yummy dishes! My family loves salsa and chips so it’s always a staple in our house, but I decided to

change it up and make something new. I stumbled upon this recipe, and it was a hit! The kids love it as a snack with tortilla chips when hanging out by the pool all day, or I sometimes change it up a bit and add pineapple or mango and serve it over grilled chicken. It’s also fantastic mixed with some jasmine rice and served as a side dish. This is just another way to brighten up your summer days and eat healthy as well!

Ingredients Veggies

• 1 3/4 cup thawed frozen or fresh sweet corn • 40 cherry tomatoes, halved

• 1 15 oz. can of black beans, rinsed and drained • 2 avocados, diced

• 1 red onion, finely diced

• 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped (use the stems too!)

42 // July 2019

Dressing

• 2 tbsp. olive oil

• 1 lemon, juiced (or 2 limes) • 1-2 tsp. cumin

• 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

• 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper

Instructions Prep all the veggie ingredients and add them to a large serving bowl. Toss well to combine. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the dressing ingredients and pour over the veggies. Toss gently to coat evenly and let rest about 10 minutes. Store in the fridge and serve!

Let that sink in—10 national titles for a person who did not even include winning in his definition of success. Now, there’s a lot to Coach Wooden and his philosophy I can’t cover in this article (look up Wooden’s Pyramid of Success for more), but as I develop my own coaching strategy, I have a few things that I’ve decided are what we should actually be focusing on. We need some biblical backing. Have you ever been disappointed by what God has or has not done? It’s tough when life isn’t mirroring your expectations. Take poor Elijah. We meet him in 1 Kings 17, and in three chapters, he has been a part of a major prophecy, miracles, and a mental breakdown. He literally collapses under a tree and prays for death: “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life” (1 Kings 19:4). That is a major case of disappointment. And to whom does he address his disappointment? God. We know, as a fact, that God is good, perfect, and holy in all He does. “You are good, and do good” (Psalm 119:68). There are many more accounts in Scripture where we can see real people living out real disappointment. Read about Peter, John the Baptist, Abraham and Sarah, Hagar, and Joseph, to name a few.
