Broken Cisterns: Digging Spiritual Holes in Your Life
M
by Kenneth E. Ware
asada is an ancient fortified palace built by Herod the Great in the southern district of the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. Herod constructed
it as a place of refuge in the event of a revolt. Inside the breathtaking wonder are gigantic hewn cisterns. A cistern is an underground plastered hole hewn out by man to capture and retain rainwater. Stagnant and polluted with germs or bacteria, cisterns frequently developed cracks within the plastered walls, causing the water to leak out. According to the prophet Jeremiah, God used the imagery of hewn out, broken cisterns to charge faithless all of Israel with two indictments cf. Jer.2:4,13.
They had forsaken the LORD. The priests and prophets did not know God. Instead, they prophesied by Baal and walked after things that did not profit. They also changed their glory for that which did not profit cf. Jer.2:8, 11. Judah’s people had become idolatrous traitors. They traded their God for things that had no eternal value. The two evils God charged Israel with were: 1) Abandonment of the One True God and 2) Adopting false gods (cf. Jer. 2:13). I. Abandonment - Forsaking the One True God (*Jer.2:13a) The charge was against Judah, whom God calls “My people.” Several times throughout the scriptures the LORD calls the sons of Israel, “My people.” Unfortunately, Judah did not take heed. They had “forsaken” God, the fountain of living waters. The term, “forsaken” Heb. (azab), means to abandon or desert. The evil that God forewarned them of, they somehow committed (cf. Deut.8:18-20). No wonder the prophet wrote, “All who forsake You will be put to shame . . . because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the LORD” (Jer. 17:13). Today, the same principle can apply to Christians. Christians can indirectly omit and turn away from devotion to God by neglecting spiritual disciplines and personal devotional times with Christ. II. Adoption – Following After False gods (Jer.2:13b)
time. Even upon completion, imperfection is realized. Cisterns were quite common and prevalent throughout the Judean desert. Water collected in cisterns was brackish, stagnant and full of germs. Natural running spring water was thought to be healthy and drinkable. The cisterns of Judah were broken, manmade, and could hold no water. The fountain (spring) of living waters cleanses and sustains eternal life. God rebuked Judah for their acts of idolatry. They prophesied by Baal and thirsted after worthless, man-made idols instead of trusting in the One True Living God, the fountain of living waters. It was the sons of Korah who wrote, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God . . .” (Psa. 42:1-2a). On the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘from his innermost being will flow rivers of living waters’”(John 7:37-38). Only Jesus can quench the thirst of man’s empty soul. Are you trusting in a broken cistern? To trust in a broken cistern is worthless, but to trust in Jesus Christ is rewarding. After all, our LORD says, “And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost” (Rev.22:17). *All Scriptures are KJV.

Keeping Our Eyes on the Father National Aunt and Uncle Day is July 26, 2024. We are pleased to share this article about relationships with aunts and also with the Lord. Enjoy! by Jade Morgan
I
have a niece and two nephews. At the time of this writing, my niece is thirteen. My nephews are two years and nearly three months old. They are all such different kids with different personalities and temperaments. I absolutely love to spend time with them. Making them smile or laugh seriously makes my entire day. One thing I have learned, in watching my niece and nephews grow up, is that when they were (or are) babies to toddler-aged, they have this intense need for their parents. I could have spent the last five days in a row with my twoyear-old nephew and formed a tight bond, but put him in

a church service the very next day with an abundance of people and he will act like he doesn’t even know me. He won’t even start to let me hold him, play with him, or leave his parents' arms in any way. A couple of weeks ago, a similar situation occurred. I sat with my brother’s family during the service and slowly, but surely, my sweet nephew warmed up to me… again. We quietly played, and he even let me hold him for a brief moment. I noticed, however, while I was holding him, he never took his eyes off of his parents. He knew where at least one of them was at all times. This is such a precious action in babies and toddlers, even as they grow in their childhoods. I have watched this happen time and time again. It is cute and one of those processes of growing up, but sometimes, I get kind of annoyed. I begin to think, “Aw come on, I know you like me! I am not going to steal you!” How does the child know that though? Even if they have been left for any amount of time and then picked up later (like always), it still does not give the baby/toddler/child the reassurance he or she needs to completely trust that his or her parents will, in fact, return. I suppose you could say it is a fear of abandonment, but more than that it is a need or dependency. Children depend on their parents, whether there are two parents or only one. They physically have a need for safety, security, comfort, food and water, shelter, and most of all… love. As we age, these continue to be basic requirements for life. You might say you could go without comfort or love, but really? Could you? Watching my nephew cling to his parents in overwhelming or new situations, makes me think of my relationship with the Lord. I need Him without a doubt, but often that is only when I have a trying situation when I fear things may not go the way I planned, or when I need help. I quickly walk away, on my own road, and lose sight of Him, not at all like my nephew. I start getting good at this independent life thing. I am comforting myself, making myself feel safe. I am providing food, water, and shelter for myself. Sure, I most
Even the most needy and dependent babies and toddlers eventually learn to trust their parents and know, for certain, they will be back. They are just gone for a bit, but they always return. Moreover, in the parents' absence, nothing has changed. The child’s needs continue to be provided for; there is no lack of love. The same with Jesus, He is always providing for us, comforting us, keeping us safe, and loving us. He may be physically absent, but He is here, and He will return. Nothing has changed with Him, He has, and continues to be constant. He will scoop us up into His arms, just like an earthly parent would, and supply all of our needs if we would simply come to Him with total and complete surrender. Jesus is not just all we need; He is all we have. “And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 AMPC).
About The Author
definitely have love and comfort. I mean, I have friends and family. So, yeah, I have all I need. I am dependent on no one because I really do not need anyone. Right? Wrong. I can only make myself happy for so long. I can only provide for my basic resources for so long. At some point, I (or you) need more. What is that more though? How could I need anything else? What is wrong with me? I have what I need, right? No. Something is missing. It took me a long time to realize this, but I cannot make myself happy and completely fulfilled with a contentment that is lasting. Trust me, I have tried, on more than one occasion, in fact. Even after I learned this difficult lesson, I went back a few more times to this mentality, “Oh, I’ve got this. I don’t need anyone.” I need Jesus. It is really as simple as that; I just make it hard. In the overwhelming moments, I need Him. When I look around and do not see one familiar face and have lost sight of Him, He has not lost sight of me. When I have moments of doubt and questioning if I can trust Him, even when He has shown me time and time again that I can, He continues to remain steadfast. I long to be like my nephew and cling to Him, my Heavenly Father, looking to Him alone to provide for my needs both physically and mentally.

Now, isn’t that fun? As a writer, it is important to expand your vocabulary. I often search for synonyms to keep things interesting and fresh. It is boring to use the same word over, and over, and over again in your text. Synonyms give your readers a clearer understanding of what you are trying to say. God has blessed us with many

Finding God at the Beach: Lessons in Faith and Nature
W
elcome to our special Bible lesson about the beach. The beach is not just a place of fun and relaxation; it's also a place where we can learn important lessons about God and our faith. Join us as we explore the spiritual significance of the beach and discover how we can deepen our connection with God through nature. God's Magnificent Creation Prompt for Parents: Take a moment to marvel at the beauty of the beach with your child. Ask them what they notice about the sand, the waves, and the sky. Encourage them to see God's handiwork in every detail. Observe how the grains of sand are countless, yet each is uniquely crafted by God's hand. Discuss how the waves continuously crash against the shore, demonstrating God's power and consistency.
24 // July 2024
Scripture Reference: *Psalm 19:1-2 “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.” When we appreciate the wonders of creation, we are reminded of the greatness of our Creator. Every aspect of nature, from the smallest pebble to the vast ocean, reflects God's glory and creativity. Take time to thank God for His magnificent creation and for giving us the ability to enjoy and learn from it. Trusting in God's Provision Prompt for Parents: Talk to your child about how the beach is a reminder of God's provision. The waves may come and go, but God faithfully, and steadily provides for our needs. Discuss ways in which your family has experienced God's provision. Point out the seashells scattered along the shore, each one a unique gift from the ocean, just as God provides unique blessings for each of us. Reflect on times when God has met your family's needs, whether through unexpected help, timely opportunities, or answered prayers. Scripture Reference: Matthew 6:26 - “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Building a Strong Foundation Prompt for Parents: Help your child build a sandcastle and discuss the importance of having a strong foundation in our lives. Explain that while sandcastles can be washed away by the tide, a life built on Jesus' teachings stands firm against any storm. Use this activity to illustrate the difference between building on sand and building on rock. Scripture Reference: Matthew 7:24-25 - “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”
Walking in Faith, Not Fear Prompt for Parents: As you walk along the shoreline, talk to your child about facing their fears with faith. Just as Peter walked on water with Jesus, we can overcome our fears by keeping our eyes fixed on Him. Discuss how the vast ocean can be intimidating, yet when we focus on Jesus, we can walk confidently through any storm. Scripture Reference: Matthew 14:29-31 - “So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, 'Lord, save me!' And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’” Encourage your child to share any fears they have and pray together for God's help to overcome them. Remind them that Jesus is always there to reach out and help us, just as He helped Peter. Being a Light in the World Prompt for Parents: Talk to your child about how the lighthouse guides ships safely to shore, just as we are called to be a light in the world. Discuss ways in which your family can shine God's love and kindness to others. Use
the lighthouse as a metaphor for how we can guide others through dark and difficult times with the light of Christ. Scripture Reference: Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Brainstorm with your child about practical ways to be a light, such as helping a neighbor, being kind to classmates, or sharing about God's love. Encourage them to let their light shine in everyday situations and to glorify God through their actions. Wrapping Up The beach is more than just a place to have fun; it's a classroom where we can learn valuable lessons about God and our faith. As you spend time at the beach with your family, may you see God's presence all around you, and may these lessons deepen your relationship with Him. Reflect on how the vastness of the ocean represents God's boundless love, and how the rhythm of the waves mirrors His unwavering faithfulness. Let the beach inspire you to trust in God's provision, build your life on the solid foundation of Jesus' teachings, walk in faith rather than fear, and shine brightly as a beacon of God's love in the world.

Red, White, and Blue Trifle
elebrating Independence Day often brings to mind images of fireworks, parades, and of course, festive gatherings centered around delicious food. As
we gather with loved ones, it's a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the blessings of freedom and community. Scripture reminds us of the joy found in fellowship, as seen in Acts 2:46-47: “Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” Inspired by this sense of community and celebration, why not prepare a dish that embodies the spirit of togetherness? Here's a delightful recipe to light up your 4th of July table.
Ingredients • 1 pound cake or angel food cake, cubed • 2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced • 2 pints blueberries • 3 cups vanilla pudding or custard • 2 cups heavy cream • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Fresh mint leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions 1. Prepare the Whipped Cream: In a mixing bowl, add the heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip using a hand mixer or stand mixer on high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks. This homemade whipped cream will add a fresh and luxurious touch to your trifle. 2. Layer the Cake: In a large trifle dish or a clear glass bowl, create a base layer using half of the cubed cake. The cake acts as a sponge, soaking up the juices from the fruit and the richness of the pudding, providing a lovely texture contrast. 3. Add the First Fruit Layer: Take half of the sliced strawberries and layer them over the cake, then add a layer of half of the blueberries. These fruits not only contribute vibrant colors that are reminiscent of the American flag but also offer a fresh, juicy burst of flavor. 4. Spread the Pudding: Spoon half of the vanilla pudding or custard over the berries. The smooth, creamy texture of the pudding binds the layers together and adds a delightful sweetness that complements the tartness of the fruit. 5. Repeat the Layers: Repeat the layering process with the remaining cake, berries, and pudding. This will enhance the flavors and create an appealing layered look that will be visible through the sides of your trifle dish. 6. Top with Whipped Cream: Spread the freshly whipped cream over the top of the pudding layer, creating a fluffy cloud-like topping. This not only looks appealing but also adds a rich, creamy finish that pairs perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. 7.Garnish and Chill: Garnish the top with the remaining strawberries and blueberries, arranging them in a decorative pattern. If desired, add a few mint leaves for a pop of green, which not only adds color contrast but also a refreshing flavor. Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully and the cake to absorb the juices from the fruit and pudding.

The Church Bells Ring On The Farm by Charles Finney
In a county fair,
For they know it's a blessing, a sweet charm.
Where laughter abounds,
On the 4th of July, our nation's delight,
The bells at church,
The sunset paints a picture, oh so bright,
Their joyful sounds,
More beautiful than any firework's burst,
Ring in the morning,
A reminder of freedom's glory, in God we trust.
Ring in the day,
At the church, folks gather to meet,
Calling all to come and pray.
Their hearts filled with reverence, oh so sweet.
Oh, let freedom ring,
They worship in liberty, with voices raised,
Like a joyous chime,
Thanking God for freedom and for grace.
In this land we call home,
So let the bells ring with joy and cheer,
so sublime.
For this country, we love so dear.
But who are the bells tolling for, you ask?
May laughter and unity never cease,
Why, it's for every patriotic soul under our flag's grasp!
In this land of the brave, the land of peace.

Our Weakness is Our Strength by Corrie Vallance
E
ver feel that crumbling sensation when all hope is lost and you have run out of options? It feels like the world is falling apart and there’s absolutely
nothing you can do about it. What an incredibly scary moment it can be to feel so weak in a time of suffering. The good news is, this is when we are the strongest in the Lord! Our strength comes from our Heavenly Daddy, just as our faith does! It is instilled in us through Christ. It dwells within us by the Spirit of the Holy Lamb who has taken residence within us. Paul states it with so much passion as He shares to the Gentiles that God’s Grace has fallen on them as well as the chosen in Ephesians 3:14-19 NIV:
its name that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” God’s gift to man was making himself accessible to us so that we didn’t have to want or need for anything! Just as it was in the beginning, God wanted us to be wholly and joyfully dependent on Him! This is why He promises us provisions, strength, hope with faith, and joy! He gave us all these things through our salvation through Christ! The promise of Christ holds so many other promises and they are all summed up in Christ’s death and resurrection! One of those wonderful promises is strength in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB1995 “And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for

you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly,

therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” How do we know this to be true? Look at Daniel in the lion’s den. Did Daniel possess strength against these mighty lions? Do you think he was given some special large kittytaming power? Not in the least! But he did have faith in his heavenly father to keep the mouths of the lions shut. Therefore, he was not saved by anything else but by God and His power to show the king that Daniel was innocent.

A Most Significant Object: My Father’s Cane by Candyce Carden

for years.
A Most Significant Realization
I’d never paid much attention to his ancient hobby before, but his hands held a large piece of bark-stripped wood. “What are you making?” I asked. “A cane to help me hobble around,” he replied in his good-natured way. I sat down across from him to watch. I had no idea my daddy knew how to make a cane! He answered my questions as he patiently shaved strips of wood to the ground with his pocket knife. My father was many things, but this was the first time I viewed him as an artist. His medium was a reclaimed pine branch he found in the woods behind his house. Pine because it’s a soft wood with a relatively straight grain. Carving a cane is slow, painstaking work. I learned dad had already cured the wood for several weeks to make it stronger. On subsequent visits, I monitored his progress until finally, he reached the final step of treating his cane with a walnut oil-based stain. The cane is not fancy, but my dad was not a fancy man. No
A favorite assignment of my first-year composition students was to write about a significant object and what made it so. I introduced the project by telling them about my dad’s cane. My students wrote about a variety of things, but they all had one common denominator: each served as a bridge to a significant person in their lives. This realization led one student to quip, “It’s not the objects in life that matter, it’s the people.” Sometimes we wonder how significant we are to those in our lives. Do we matter? Do we make a difference? Rest assured, the answers to these questions are more than likely yes. But if ever in doubt, please know how significant you are in God’s eyes.
A Most Significant Promise “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29-31 ASV).
the cane is exquisite. It so much represents the essence of my daddy.
