Next, I will preach deliverance from any sin or addiction. 1 John 1:8-9 tells us that if we confess our sins, He will forgive us and cleanse us. Also, I will preach the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Being Saved By God! ave you ever been saved by God? I have. I was little—maybe four or five—and I was getting ready to ride my bike down a hill. Unfortunately, I forgot to put my helmet on that day. I went down the hill, my tire got jammed with a stick, and I went down face first. My neighbors came to my rescue and picked me up. They rushed me inside, cleaned me up,

and put an icepack on my forehead. I could’ve gotten a concussion that day or something even worse if God hadn’t been with me. That day, I was saved by God. He used my neighbors’ helping hands, and I am thankful God used them to help me that day. God saves us every 8 // June 2019

day from lots of bad things. Put your trust in Him and let Him save your day too! If you would like to put your trust in God today so He can help you through a bike wreck or something that may be scary, all you have to do is ask Jesus to come into your heart and He will save you. Romans 10:9-10: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."

Timing is (Not) Everything MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE

“I

f you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?” It’s a valid question, and one I’d like to pose to anyone who practices “day trading” of stocks or other “market timing strategies” in the belief that a wavy or zig-zag line on a stock chart can actually predict stock prices or movements in the stock markets. Serious economists, many of them winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics, have unequivocally proven that trying to time the market is a fool’s errand; in other words, it doesn’t work. One study I found reveals that over a twelve-month period, less than 2% of day traders actually earned a profit. And yet, those who tout “market timing strategies to earn millions” are still around. Just recently, I heard a radio commercial advertising a “free seminar” to learn “market timing strategies” coming to an arena in Chattanooga. Let’s apply some logic--if you really did know some secret system to predict the next upward or downward movement of global stock markets, why would you be holding seminars to teach people how to do it? These seminars typically work like this (and I know because I have acquaintances who have attended them, sadly). The first meeting is usually “free,” to get you excited about promises of making hundreds of thousands of dollars in the stock market in a very short period of time. Then, they try to sell you their “course” about how to read stock charts and predict moves in the stock market, usually for several thousand dollars. Then, they confess that if you want the “big money,” you’ll need to pay for the “deluxe course” which is about $30,000. You get the picture. Now here’s the question again—if this stock market “guru” actually knew the secrets to predicting the movements of

10 // June 2019

He and his wife Esmerelda have three children. the stock market, why in the world would he or she need to tour the country holding seminars to teach others how to do it? The guru would already have countless billions upon billions of dollars earned from this great “secret” of market timing, and the guru would know that sharing the secret would effectively destroy their whole market timing system. Indeed, the whole notion of timing the stock markets by reading movements on stock charts is absurd. Don’t buy it. Unfortunately, I know people who actually have bought this—hook, line, and sinker. They have quit their jobs with the belief they had finally found their secret to quick riches. They have told anyone who will listen that they will have millions within the next year or two using stock chart timing systems. Not surprisingly, this never happened. These folks are now disillusioned and bitter, and with good reason. But don’t take my word for it. Dr. Burton Malkiel, one of the most highly-respected economic academics and author of the best-selling book A Random Walk Down Wall Street, has this to say about market timers, also known as “chartists” or “technicians” who study zig-zagging lines of stock movements in the vain hope of seeing a pattern about the future: “On close examination, technicians are often seen with holes in their shoes and frayed shirt collars.” In other words, these so-called experts are usually flat broke, so their secret “system” has obviously failed. So when the market-timing “gurus” show off photos of their mansions and flashy cars, remember that their money comes from selling seminars and day-trading courses to gullible suckers, not from profits earned by a secret stock market strategy. Buy stock index funds instead, and stay invested for the long-term in a well-diversified portfolio. That’s a time-tested strategy for building real wealth.

I believe Christians (not just men) will always combat bullying, sexual harassment, double-mindedness, fits of rage, and the oppression of others. It is at the heart of the Gospel to stand up for those who have become victims to systems and acts of sin. This is the inherent will of Jesus when we consider how to respond to “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40). Philippians 4:9 reminds us that if we do the things we have learned, received, heard, and seen, then “the God of peace will be with you.” It sets up a condition for us to follow in order to be obedient to Christ: “Do the things I identify as ‘good,’ and I will be with you.”

people will speak things over us, and at times, we may wonder

for whatever 2019 would have in store. After prayer for what our words for the then-new year would be, I felt like God spoke the word “provision” over us, and my husband also heard God speak the word “growth.” We were thrilled. We couldn’t think of two more fitting words for where we felt God had us at this time in our lives. In July 2018, I began to have some medical problems that came suddenly and were unexpected. Over the next five months, God used this time in my life to change my entire perspective on the power of words. I gained a whole new spiritual insight into the weight of the words others spoke over me, the power contained in the things God spoke over me, and the significance of the words that I spoke over myself. His ways are higher than our own, and I am thankful for that truth. In life, we are often faced with fears, trials, worries, and uncertainties. I am thankful that, through this journey He had me on, I was able to learn valuable spiritual truths and fall more deeply in love with a God who never leaves my side. When God laid it on my and my husband’s hearts to pray for a word for 2019, God had my heart in a place where I put great value in words, especially the words that He spoke over me. Those words were my strength each day and the only way I could combat my fears with my health. Growth and provision: these words were so powerful for me that they knocked me off of my spiritual feet. We are three months into 2019 and these two words ring loud and clear in this year for us already. As far as growth is concerned,

Unfortunately, while typing her address, he mistyped one letter and his note was sent instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the computer screen and fell to the floor in a dead faint! How do we continue to make gains without breaking the bank…or losing our sanity? As a high school and college baseball player, I remember my friends playing every weekend, traveling hours upon hours to play in tournaments, and exhausting themselves and their parents. Don’t get me wrong; for some, this is the right path. Summer sports present the opportunity for development and exposure to recruiting and more. I am involved in summer sports and encourage certain athletes to play over the summer. But, for every kid who plays all summer and ends up going on to play at the collegiate level, I know two or three more who push too hard and end up burning out or hurting themselves. So, whether or not you plan to put your athlete in summer sports, here are a few simple tips to help take care of your athlete’s body and mind this summer. 1. Rest is a good thing. Kids need rest, just like adults do. Here in Tennessee, there is a “dead period” where no school sport functions can take place. I would encourage every family to consider a dead period: no sports, no camps, no working out, just rest. 2. Consider things that benefit the athlete that are not sport-specific. I’m a baseball coach. If my players can only do one thing all summer, I want them to swim. I don’t mean, “Go

3. Go to camps. Skills are not developed in-season. The regular season is when the offseason work shows. Many programs, including TCPS, run summer camps to help develop some of the fundamental skills your athlete needs, and they’re usually fun and a short commitment. 4. Take time to be with the family. Sports are fun, and for many people, including myself, they’re an important part of life. But, they’re not the most important thing. Take a vacation, spend time with the family that is unrelated to developing your athlete’s ability, and work together to develop the academic and spiritual portions of your child’s development.

America’s Quietest Health Risk: What You Need to Know by Shannon Alvey

L

Consequences of Loneliness Include: • 45 percent increase in risk of death • 59 percent greater risk of mental and physical decline • Development of brain biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s Knowing the difference between isolation and loneliness can help you tackle the source of your feelings: Signs of isolation include living alone, having no close relatives, never leaving the house, not participating in phone or digital chat or being alone for nine or more hours per day. Someone suffering from loneliness wishes for more friends, doesn’t see friends and family enough, doesn’t meet enough people, has no one to rely on and spends holidays alone. The good news is that being aware can help you focus on developing daily habits to be healthy, happy and active.

34 // May 2019

Six Steps For Fighting 1. Acknowledgment – Just like depression or any other ailment that feels terrible, you’d be surprised at the number of people who remain in denial without admitting to their feelings of loneliness. Acknowledging bouts of loneliness and understanding that it’s a feeling, not a fact, can help you move past it. 2. Make a Plan to Tackle Your Habit – After acknowledging your bouts of loneliness and understanding how susceptible you can be to isolation, you can more clearly plan and act toward improving your habits. Making an intentional plan is a huge step toward making progress. Start off simply and tackle one habit at a time until you’ve mastered it and it’s become a second-nature new habit. Then go back and take on another one. 3. Focus on Others and Be Curious – Whether new or old, your relationships with people can travel so much further if the others feel supported and heard. Rather than focus on your own feelings or insecurities, focus your attention on the other person. This will relieve pressure from focusing on your own imperfections or negative self-talk and will make them feel appreciated and more likely to open up. 4. Use Technology to Stay Connected – As you grow older, your social circle of family and friends are likely to spread or dwindle. One way to supplement your in-person contact is to maintain your long-distance relationships using technology. There are plenty of options in this digital age: online chat, online video chat, video on your phone, email, etc. While learning a new digital platform can be challenging, once you get the hang of it, advantages include convenience and accessibility. 5. Volunteer – Finding the right volunteer opportunity that works well with your personal goals and core values can be beneficial on so many levels. Not only will you have the chance to meet new people, you can benefit by feeling healthier, less stressed and happier, inspiring others to give back. 6. Sign Up for a Class – What have you always been curious about learning? Now you have another reason to prioritize signing up for a class about it. There are so many benefits to lifelong learning, including expanding your growth experiences and building up your neuroplasticity. About The Author

oneliness and social isolation are on the rise, more than one-third of Americans over the age of 45 report feeling lonely, with prevalence especially high among those over 65 years old. Over 6 million adults 65 and older have a disability that requires assistance in order to leave the home, and over half of older adults live alone. Lonely older adults may stop eating or getting dressed and become housebound, increasing the risk for frailty and injury. The evidence is abundant and decisive: social connection significantly affects health. When you believe that you have people in your life who care about you, and you interact with them regularly, you are better off. For instance, you may be less likely to catch a cold, have a stroke or heart disease, slip into early cognitive decline and develop depression. You may even be more likely to overcome socioeconomic disadvantages, recover quickly from illness and live longer. Other research suggests that loneliness is as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and worse than being obese or sedentary.

Are you being an easy target in a disagreement with your brother, or do you resist the devil so that he has to flee? What we learn in the Bible stories of siblings who got along is that they made an effort to enjoy one another’s company and help one another. Aaron helped Moses lead, and Miriam helped to save his life at a time when Hebrew baby boys were being killed. Mary and Martha were good friends to Jesus while He was on earth, and they sent for him to heal their brother Lazarus, who was also Jesus’s friend. These siblings loved and cared for one another. Kindness through Cancer quote widely attributed to the Greek philosopher Plato says, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” I’d heard this quote many times, but I didn’t really understand it until 2016 when the carefree life I had known fell apart. Although the latest research states that one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, I never thought something like that would happen to my family. Within a few weeks of each other, my aunt and my mother were both diagnosed with breast cancer. As we were reeling from this dreadful news and beginning their treatment journeys, my grandfather learned his bladder cancer had returned. Devastation does not even begin to describe the depth of our pain. Typically, when a family member is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, the rest of the family rallies together to help him or her. Our situation, however, simply overextended our ability to help one another, and here is where we learned the true meaning of kindness. Friends of our family literally came to our rescue. They mowed our yard. They brought us meals every week. They prayed with and for us. They visited us. They even moved the laundry from the washer to the dryer when my mother couldn’t. My mother tells the story of going to a restaurant after one of her medical tests. She was hurting physically and emotionally and knew that no one in that restaurant had any idea. So, how many other people in that restaurant were carefully hiding their pain, stress, and

50 // June 2019

sadness? How many people do you know who are doing the same thing? So, what should we do about this? The answer is kindness! We can’t fix or cure anyone’s pain, but kindness offered to someone who is sad or hurting feels like an unexpected gift when everything else seems to be falling apart. R.J. Palacio, the author of Wonder, stated, “If every person…made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, will try to act a little kinder than is necessary, the world really would be a better place.” It is so simple to reach out. Maybe it’s another student. Maybe it’s a friend or someone in your family. Just start talking at lunch or in the line at Chick-fil-a. Compliment something he or she is wearing. Pay for the order behind you in the drive-thru. Put a gift card in your neighbor’s mailbox. Text a friend or family member. Send a Bible verse or an encouraging song. Mail your friend a cozy blanket. What if we could provide relief and hope to 1,000 people next week through simply offering kindness? That is powerful! One of my mother’s doctors said, “Cancer will either make you bitter or better,” and as a family, we’ve chosen for the rest of our lives for it to make us better. Now today, my aunt, my mother, and my grandfather are all living and cancer free!

Our emphasis in the Body of Christ shouldn’t be on who is the best Christian but on completing our calling and finishing the race. Everyone who participates by the rules and keeps their faith alive to the end is a winner. In faith, like the Special Olympics, we don’t want to see anyone lose! There’s room for all of us in the winner’s circle in the Body of Christ. Perhaps the greatest thing to witness in the Special Olympics is how these special people will sacrifice a winning medal and
