we are finding wonderful contentment in the season God has us in.

This first part, “Search me, O God, and know my heart…” is a constant prayer of mine. I know there are things in my spiritual life that need daily attention, but it’s easy for my days to get busy, and I lose focus on those spiritual matters. So what happens is they get neglected, and things that are neglected often are forgotten… …until I ask the Lord to reveal those things that are unpleasing to Him, those offenses that lay in the shadows. God is amazing; He gently reveals these old, dusty boxes that haven’t been opened in a while and asks me to take a look and see what needs to be thrown out. Here’s the wonderful part of it: even though it never feels great in the moment—realizing that there are sins, character issues, or behaviors that sadden God—He never grows tired of helping me clean out the clutter to create more

Fear Is A Liar! ave you ever been so afraid of something that when you go to bed at night, you just have to cry yourself to sleep? I struggle with this at night. I always get so afraid of what might happen while I’m asleep. If you do struggle with this, you just need to call on God to help you, but I’m just saying that it is not going to get better instantly; it is going to take a while. There are many solutions to this problem, such as going to sleep with a Bible verse, reciting all the Scripture that you know by heart, or just simply turning the radio on and starting to listen to Christian music (93.1 is my personal favorite). There are so many ways to conquer your fear, whether it is not being able to go to sleep at night, what will happen to your family members who aren’t saved, snakes, spiders, or any other fear that you can possibly have. I want you to know that you can talk to your parents about it, or even your friends. God is always with you, and He will never leave your side. My favorite verse is one that my GranJan showed me, and it is Philippians 4:8, which says, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and

admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” There are many other verses in the Bible that talk about fear, such as 2 Timothy 1:7, 2 Corinthians 10:4, and James 4:7. There is also a song that my mom showed me that says, “You’re my courage when I worry in the dead of night. You’re my strength ’cause I’m not strong enough to win this fight. You are greater than the battle

raging in my mind. I will trust you more, and I will fear no more.” So when you lie awake, just wondering what the future will hold, call upon God and He will help you win this battle. Just remember, Satan isn’t in control of you—God is. Have a wonderful month!

Don’t Waste a Crisis MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

A

s of this writing, we in southeast Tennessee have just entered week nine of the coronavirus crisis. In many of our communities, restaurants and retail businesses are slowly re-opening, often with restrictions on the number of patrons allowed at one time. By now, many of us are accustomed to wearing a mask when out in public, and most of us are hypervigilant about hand washing. So, in numerous ways, many of us have lots in common during this crisis in terms of choices we are making to help keep everyone safe and to end this pandemic as quickly as possible. On the other hand, I’ve noticed a marked difference between how people are using their time during this crisis. First, the good news. From what I’ve witnessed on social media posts and heard from talking to various friends, this crisis has brought many families much closer together. With everybody at home all day and night, families are playing board games, actually talking to each other face to face, and growing emotionally closer. Furthermore, many people are getting a chance to tackle long overdue chores, home improvement projects, yardwork, etc. However, this is not the case for everybody. Many people are binge-watching Netflix all day and night, while many others are constantly complaining on social media about how “bored” they are. My wife and I read these complaints with utter amazement and incredulity. Bored? Are you kidding me? With so many books and articles to read, so many writing projects, so much to learn—and all of it just a mouse click away—how could anyone be bored right now? So, here’s my financial advice for this month—don’t waste this crisis! If you do have more free time on your hands due to coronavirus, use it wisely! Here are some

10 // June 2020

practical suggestions, financially speaking, in no particular order. Review your monthly budget and see where and how to make cuts to unnecessary expenses. If you’re married, be sure to include your spouse in this and get his or her input about the monthly budget. If you have teenagers or adult children living at home, they should also be included in this activity (teachable moment). If you don’t have a monthly written budget, cheer up: with all your extra time sitting at home during this crisis, now is the perfect opportunity to make a written budget! READ read read! Check your local library website and read books and articles online about saving, money management, investing, paying off debt, etc. Quit watching mindless TV shows on Netflix and instead find YouTube videos on personal finance, making budgets, etc. Join Audible.com and start downloading books on personal finance, money management, retirement investing, etc. I read countless audio books while doing yardwork, walking the dog, and cycling around the neighborhood. On that same note, search Apple podcasts and iHeartRadio for podcasts on money and financial matters and subscribe to all the ones that pique your interest. Also, during all your free time during coronavirus, why not log onto your company’s 401(k) website and review your retirement accounts to see how much you’ve accumulated at this point? Then use a free retirement planning calculator and see how much you’ll need to retire with the lifestyle you want, and see if you’re on track to meet your goals. Not started a Roth IRA yet? Good news—if you are feeling “bored” during this crisis, now’s your chance to open an account online and start contributing to your Roth IRA. Whatever you do, don’t sit around griping that you’re bored right now. You have way too much to do right now to change your future!

ith praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord: ‘He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.’ And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy” (Ezra 3:11-12). In November of 2016, I was a grown man crying on the floor of his living room. I had witnessed the impossible. My beloved Chicago Cubs, after 108 years of futility and falling short, had finally achieved the impossible: winning the World Series. My eyes leaked tears of joy. On that same night, at the same moment, somewhere near the beaches of South Florida, my father shed his own tears: tears of disbelief colliding with childhood joy that had been put on reserve throughout his entire life. Same moment. Two hearts. Same reaction. That is what befuddles me about the passage in Ezra. The event is the laying of the foundation of the temple in Jerusalem that had been destroyed. The reactions are of joy, shouting, and thanksgiving. Yet, at the very same moment, at the very same event, there was another set of people compiled of priests, Levites, and an older generation who had seen the previous temple, weeping aloud. Same moment. Two hearts. Different reactions. What one generation saw as a brand-new start to a renewed relationship with Yahweh, another generation saw as a fragment of what had been. What a younger generation saw as a reconciliation between God and His chosen people, another generation saw as something short of the former glory of what had been on display in Solomon’s temple. Without much realization, one generation passes forward passion and belief. I am a Cubs fan because my dad took me to a game at 4 years old and I saw his passion. What was this generation passing forward to the next? Were they saying, “It would never be like it was”? Were they handing

12 // June 2020

down disappointment in what God’s house had been compared to what it was becoming? Despite the 2500 years’ difference between Ezra and the present day, I wonder if we face a similar conflict: one generation rejoicing, another generation weeping. One generation thankful for the house the Lord has built: another generation disappointed that it is not like it was. The prophet Haggai, a contemporary of Ezra, handed down these words from the throne of Heaven:

“Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing? ‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty’” (Haggai 2:3, 9). Honestly, I feel like this is a word for the Church today. Quit looking back at the former house remembering how good it once was. On that cold November night, two men in two different spaces, from two different generations, cried over the same moment. There is a generation that needs you to cry with them, rejoice with them, celebrate with them, and sing with them. God’s glory did not leave with one generation; it is still in the house.

They decided to see how common these “abnormalities” are in the general population, meaning people like you and me. To take it one step further they only tested people who had NO low back pain. Essentially, they went around and asked people…do you have back pain? If the person said, “no, my back feels fine,” an MRI was performed. You remember the two diagnoses I mentioned earlier, degenerative disc disease and disc bulge? Guess what? If you’re over the age of 50 and have NO LOW BACK PAIN, there is an 80% chance that you will have a degenerative disc, and a 60% chance that you’ll have a disc bulge. So what does this mean? medication mismanagement, or poor nutrition. If you are an adult child concerned about the welfare of your aging parent and you are considering senior living, learning how to spot the warning signs is essential. Is It Time to Encourage a Parent to Move to Senior Living? Is your parent’s home putting them at risk for a fall? Seniors often live in the same house for decades. While the familiarity of home may be important to them, most older houses weren’t designed with the unique needs of seniors in mind. An abundance of stairs, poor lighting, and a lack of handrails or walk-in showers may increase the risk for a serious fall. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults. An estimated 2.5 million seniors experience a fall every year. Experts believe this number members that they suffered a fall. Moving to an environment designed with an older adult’s safety in mind, such as an assisted living community, might be a better option than remaining at home. Is your parent becoming isolated due to their health or a lack of transportation? Isolation is a serious health risk for older adults. It contributes to everything from obesity and depression to heart disease and diabetes. When a senior has a mobility impairment, it can make it tough for them to stay involved in their community. The same holds true for an older adult who has given up driving. Finding affordable, safe transportation solutions may be difficult. The senior might be reluctant to ask friends or family members for a ride out of fear they will be a burden. Isolation and loneliness can be the result of both issues. By moving to a more accessible environment, a senior can make friends more easily, take advantage of transportation services, and participate in both on-site activities and local events. Is your parent suffering from poor nutrition? When menu planning, grocery shopping, and meal preparation become more difficult, it’s easy to rely on convenience and fast foods. For some seniors, especially those struggling with

34 // June 2020

Is your parent mismanaging their medication? Older adults often require a variety of prescription and overthe-counter medications. Staying organized and on track with each one, as well as remembering to order refills in a timely manner, can be a challenge. Medication mistakes pose a problem that can land seniors in a hospital emergency room on a regular basis. From forgetting to take one medicine to taking too much of another, these errors can be dangerous. Assisted living communities have medication management programs in place that are designed to reduce the risk of mistakes. In fact, it’s one of the most popular services in many communities. Is your health suffering? Finally, are the demands of caregiving putting your own health at risk? Providing care to a loved one can be physically and emotionally exhausting for family members. Caregivers experience more headaches, back injuries, sleep problems, and stomach problems than their non-caregiving peers. If your health is declining, it might be time to explore assisted living communities for your parent. About The Author

Many of us have a pair of brown suede shoes hiding somewhere in the closets of our hearts. Our brown suede shoes are represented by things like old habits, judgmental attitudes, unforgiveness, ecclesiastical traditions, promiscuous thoughts, and other tawdry transgressions that we have become so comfortable living with that we are unwilling to give them up to the garbage collector. These spiritual brown suede shoes, if worn long enough, become an integral part of our personalities and fit us so well that we convince ourselves that we cannot part with them. Rocky Road Brownie Recipe by Pam Wattenbarger

T

his easy Rocky Road Brownie recipe is the perfect dessert for those lazy summer days. Because it begins with a boxed mix, there’s hardly any preparation time. Kids can help make the dessert by sprinkling the marshmallows, pecans, and chocolate chips over the brownies. If you need a gluten-free version of the recipe, simply substitute a gluten-free brownie mix.

Ingredients • 1 box (18.25 ounces) brownie mix • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup vegetable oil • 1/4 cup water • 3 cups miniature marshmallows • 1 cup toasted pecans, chopped • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. In a large bowl, mix together brownie mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water until blended. 3. Spray a 9-by-9-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Pour brownie mix into the dish. 4. Bake brownies for 18-22 minutes. Remove from oven. 5. Immediately sprinkle marshmallows onto brownies. Top with pecans and chocolate chips.

About The Author

6. Allow to cool completely and cut the brownies into squares.

Displacement oxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head” (Luke 9:58). The word community generally expresses a certain supportive and nurturing way of living and working together. When someone says, “I miss a sense of community here; something should be done to build a better community,” she or he is probably suffering from alienation, loneliness, or lack of mutual support and cooperation. The desire for community is most often a desire for a sense of unity, a feeling of being accepted, and an experience of at-homeness. It is therefore not strange that for quite a few critical observers of the contemporary scene, the word community has become associated with sentimentalism, romanticism, and even melancholy. If we want to reflect on community in the context of compassion, we must go far beyond these spontaneous associations. Community can never be the place where God’s obedient servanthood reveals itself if community is understood principally as something warm, soft, homey, comfortable, or protective. When we form community primarily to heal personal wounds, it cannot become the place where we effectively realize solidarity with other people’s pains. The paradox of the Christian community is that people are gathered together in voluntary displacement. The togetherness of those who form a Christian community is a being-gathered-in-displacement. According to “Webster’s Dictionary,” displacement means, “to move or shift from the ordinary or proper place.” This becomes a telling definition when we realize the extent to which we are preoccupied with adapting ourselves to the prevalent norms and values of our milieu. We want to be ordinary and proper people who live ordinary and proper lives. There is enormous pressure on us to do what is ordinary and proper—even the attempt to excel is ordinary and proper—and thus find the satisfaction of general acceptance. This is quite understandable since the ordinary and proper behavior

44 // June 2020

that gives shape to an ordinary and proper life offers us the comforting illusion that things are under control and that everything extraordinary and non-proper can be kept outside the walls of our self-created fortress. The call to community as we hear it from our Lord is a call to move away from the ordinary and proper place, to leave your father and mother. Let the dead bury the dead, keep your hand to the plow and do not look back to what you own, and give the money to the poor and come follow me (Luke 14:26; 9:60, 62; 18:22). The Gospels confront us

with this persistent voice inviting us to move from where we are comfortable, from where we want to stay, from where we feel at home. Why is this so central? It is central because in voluntary displacement, we cast off the illusion of having “our act together” and thus begin to experience our true condition, which is like everyone else. We are pilgrims on the way, in need of God’s grace. Jesus Christ is our displaced Lord to whom complete compassion becomes flesh. In Him, we see the life of the displaced lived to it’s fullest. It is in the following of our displaced Lord that the Christian community is formed. About The Author

Gò0dNews for the Future

The Cross Road ll of us at one time or another will find ourselves at a crossroad; when we do, which way will we go? One of my favorite movies is “Castaway,” starring Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt. There are a couple of scenes in the movie that make me choke up every time: the scene when Wilson floats away, and then the very last scene where Hanks is standing at the crossroad. In the movie, Tom Hanks’s character, Chuck Noland, is a time-obsessed FedEx systems analyst who travels the world, taking care of productivity problems. His plane crashes on an island, and he realizes he’s the only survivor; then FedEx packages start washing ashore. He decides to leave one unopened, and it’s almost as if you can read his mind, that he plans to deliver this package to the owner as soon as he gets off of the island. I see this unopened package representing hope for him. As we put ourselves in his position, wondering what we would do in his situation, we know we would do the same thing and leave. With his makeshift raft, the unopened package, and Wilson in tow, he finally finds himself out in the endless expanse of the deep blue sea, not knowing if he will survive at this point, but knowing he has no choice but to leave. Then the harrowing scene with Wilson’s floating away gets me choked up and in tears every time. When at last he’s finally rescued, he finds himself surrounded by those who

46 // June 2020

thought he was dead. He finds so much has changed, and he can’t go back to the way it was before. We don’t know how many days have taken place, from the time he comes back to his previous life, until he finds himself at a crossroad with the unopened package, trying to find the owner. This particular scene in the movie really gets to me every time. It tugs at my heart, knowing that he must find the owner of the unopened package. It’s what he clung to for those four years on the island, his hope, and now, he doesn’t know which way to go. It makes me think of crossroads that we may have in our own lives at one time or another. Maybe we don’t know what to do in a certain situation. Maybe it’s a major decision, or even a minor one perhaps. If we don’t have the answer, we might not know who to turn to. “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). When we find ourselves at a crossroad, ask the one who is our hope: His name is Jesus, and He can point you in the right direction. Listen to the one who represents your hope because He can lead you through any crossroad that you may face.
