God Bless You

Y

by Mitchell Baker

es, I mean you. God bless you. Three simple words. Words we have all heard. If someone sneezes in Wal-Mart undoubtedly you will hear someone, if not several, say, “God bless you.” When someone tells a heart touching story we may respond with, “God bless you.” It is so easy for the phrase to roll off the tongue. It is so common that it can be over used, trite, and something to say because it sounds good. Sadly, the modest phrase is easily used as sarcasm.

commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it” (vs. 19-20).

When someone says, “God bless you,” do the words cause you to reflect on your life or situation you may be facing and say thank you? What is your desire when you tell someone, “God bless you?” Hopefully the words are spoken from the heart to encourage.

Our asking God to bless someone is asking God to watch over them, be merciful where mercy is needed, for grace to be extended, and needs to be met. Paul encourages the people of Colossae to, “let your speech always be gracious,” (4:6a) and to “encourage one another and build one another

Back in the early seventies many scriptures were being put into song or choruses. Not elaborate orchestrations but more like Peter, Paul, and Mary. They were easy to sing and of course a simple way to memorize scripture. One of those songs came from Numbers 23 where Balak wanted Balaam to curse Israel. “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Behold, I have received

up” (1Thes 5:11a). Jesus challenges us to go a few steps further and, “bless those who curse you” (Lk 6:28). “Please, God… anything but that.” In reality, it can bring healing and release us from that which consumes us for hours or even days. Give it a try. Deliberately pray blessings for that person and their family every day for two weeks then evaluate how you feel. There really is joy in blessing others. Now go out and give someone a heartfelt blessing. May the blessings of God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with you both now and forever more.

About The Author

“God bless you” is important to me. Allow me to share a part of my story to encourage you and hopefully you will also pass on the good news.

While meditating on the song and the words I felt God spoke to me that I had been given a commandment to bless in His name. Saying, “God bless you” took on a whole new meaning: a mandate, and an expectation that God would bless.

In His Time

y name is Hernando Ramirez ans I was born and raised in Honduras to my loving parents Hernando and Bethyna, a brother and sister. I met my lovely wife, Brittany, in 2004 on one of her mission trips to Honduras; I was one of the translators. I moved to Cleveland, TN in September of 2007, married my wife in November of 2007, and we have been blessed with eleven years of marriage and two handsome healthy boys Keaghan (9) and Kyptyn (3). I am so blessed to have the best parents (both biological and in-laws) and family ever! I am a business consultant helping business owners in the HR/Compliance/Payroll world.

Eleven years ago, my wife and I were told that we could never have children; we tried medicine and visited multiple doctors over the years who said our odds were slim to none. One day during work, Brittany and I went to the hall at work and sat at a bench and began to cry, we asked each other “Why us?”, “Why can’t we get pregnant?” and many other questions. We wrapped up our conversation with “We have been putting our trust in the wrong things.” We held hands and cried to Jesus “We want a child, but we want you more than anything. We put our full trust in you and you only”. A few weeks later we found out that we were 10 weeks pregnant with our first son Keaghan.

12 // November 2018

Four years later, we were blessed with pregnancy number 2! We were so excited we couldn’t stand it. Our 12-week checkup went great. At our 16-week Checkup, there was no longer a heartbeat. Our baby had gone to be with the Lord! The pain and confusion was unbearable, but again Brittany, myself, and now our son, Keaghan, went to the Lord and worshipped him in the middle of our storm. We knew all along that God had a perfect plan. The months went by and we got stronger. There is no way that without His grace and mercy we would’ve made it through. A Monday morning on my drive to work, I couldn’t stop crying and just having a conversation with the Lord and telling Him how much I missed my baby. This happened for a full week. Friday afternoon, I called Brittany and I told her “Don’t cook, we are going out to celebrate.” While having dinner, I said to her “I want to tell you something and I don’t want you to be sad. I’ve been missing our baby so bad and I wish that he/she was here with us.” She hugged me and said everything will be ok! She surprised me during dinner with the news that baby # 3 was on the way. I initially got scared, but the overwhelming feeling to know that God was preparing me throughout the whole week to receive the great news of a new child was incredible. Eight months later our second son Kyptyn arrived to the world! I didn’t earn any of my blessings and I surely didn’t deserve them, yet my heavenly father loves me so much that he has blessed me beyond all measure! God knows what and when is best for us. We often have plans for our lives, families, careers, dreams, and you name it, but God’s plan is always far greater than ours for our lives. Day in and day out, I am reassured that God’s plan is perfect and that He wants the very best for us.

As adults, we often think that quality time means sitting in the same room watching TV while we read a book or work around the house. We decide that quality time is a special trip out and that will make up for quantity time. We allow life to dictate how we spend time with our children and loved ones. respond to all his needs, and nurture him perfectly into adulthood. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Well, that’s not how it happens. The good news is we, as parents, can dig into God’s “how-to” book of instructions and teach, lead, and guide them in the right direction! Proverbs 22:6 says plainly, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he shall not depart from it.” I have noticed, nonetheless, some parents neglect to teach even the smallest of the healthiest habits. Last week I had breakfast with a 93 year-old resident at the local nursing home. Twice, she has been crowned the “Sweetheart” of their facility. Words fail me when I try to describe her beauty, wisdom, and grace. An unapologetic, deep-rooted Christian, she had this to say about the healthy habits we should be exercising and teaching our children: The woman with an issue of blood [Matthew 9:20-22] got down on her knees and crawled to touch the Savior. That’s humility, humbleness. We need to teach habits of humility and humbleness. Saying “excuse me or I’m sorry” goes a long way because everything tastes better with a little sugar on it. My mother also taught us

Plenty of equipment and everything is clean. I am scared when the secret gets out about this place because right now I have not observed it to be busy at all. I use this gym on the weekend and then go to another gym closer to my house during the week so I don’t see a lot of staff. The staff I have come in contact with have been really nice and helpful. Their trainers seem to be knowledgeable and they have a large variety of classes. Not that I would ever workout at 3 AM but it is nice to know I have the option so I also appreciate the 24/7 access. Waiting on God ave you ever been in a situation where you needed God to fix your problem right away? If you have, you know how it is when he tells you to wait. As frustrating as it may be, he has something better in store. A great example of this is in Genesis 37 where it talks about Joseph and his brothers. If you’re familiar with the story, you know that Joseph’s brothers weren’t ideal siblings. They did unspeakable things like throwing Joseph in a hole, selling him

into slavery, and so much more. He ends up being the second in command over all of Egypt after he interprets pharaoh’s dream! Do you see how God flipped the story just like that? He can do the exact same thing in your life. In Psalm 37:7, it says, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” Now, I’d like to talk about the last part of that verse. It’s talking about when we do what’s right and get penalized while the wicked seem to prosper. When the bad guys win, trust in God,

26 // November 2018

and be content in him. Christianity is all about faith. It’s about trusting God no matter what. Even if you get an F on that super important test, God still has your back. He is perfect which means his plans are perfect. Even though you cannot see him, you can see him move right here on Earth. Seeing God move is the most unspeakable act of joy. It’s like when you have just had the worst day, and your friend comes up to you and says, “I’m not sure what’s going on in your life, but I’m praying for you.” That’s God! Maybe your parents haven’t had the best relationship lately, or people have been being mean to you at school and you feel like you just can’t take it anymore. You hear a voice that says, “You’re so loved by God,” or the perfect song comes on the Christian radio that says that “I will trust in you.” That’s God! He moves in just the right ways in just the right time. His timing is perfect; it’s never late or running behind schedule. The thing is that God’s timing is completely different than yours. For example, one of your parents might have lost their job and they can’t find a new one. You pray to God for them to get a job, and you want them to get it right away. Well, God doesn’t need them to get it right then. During that time of waiting, he tests your faith. He sees how long you’ll stay strong and keep your faith. Then in his perfect timing, he gives them a better job than they had before. He answers prayers, just not in your time. So whoever needs this right now, stay faithful and believe that he’s God. You’re so loved.

FEATURED COVER STORY

Manderley Christian Camp and Conference Center

M

anderley Christian Camp and Conference Center is a dream come true. Many years ago God placed a desire in the heart of a lady named Jeri in Pikeville, Tennessee to use her 2,000-acre ranch to impact the lives of children. This dream lay dormant for many years as Jeri pondered how this could come to pass. In February of 2013, God providentially connected Jeri with Jeff Keaton, the Founder, CEO, and President of Renewanation. He shared the vision and mission of Renewanation with Jeri and she instantly knew that Renewanation was the right organization to partner with. Jeff Keaton felt strongly impressed in November of 2007 to launch a ministry that would give millions of children a biblical worldview and the organization was launched in November of 2008. In the Fall of 2011, it became a full-time ministry

28 // November 2018

and since then God has refined the vision, clarified how to accomplish the mission, and brought together a team of skilled leaders, staff, and financial partners. Since 2011, these partners have given over $10.8 million to Renewanation. Their generous gifts have helped thousands of children to begin developing a biblical worldview. Initially, Jeri thought she would wait until after her death to allow Renewanation to start their work on the ranch, but, after getting better acquainted with the organization’s team, she decided to give Renewanation the first 800 acres to launch the camp ministry in her lifetime. Renewanation’s mission is to inspire and equip the family, church, and school to give children a biblical worldview. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” Renewanation believes that when the family, church and

school are all teaching biblical truth, children have a very high likelihood of developing a biblical worldview. Over the last two years, cabins and lodges have been built that sleep and provide meeting areas and dining space for 182 individuals. These fresh facilities boast rooms with a private bath and shower, a queen bed and six single beds, as well as its own heating and cooling system. The main lodge is equipped with a commercial kitchen and a beautiful dining and meeting space. Fiber optic Wi-Fi, audio and video are also available in the main lodge. There are several recreational options available at Manderley. A zip line creates real excitement as well as a 9-hole disk-golf course, low ropes course, and numerous hiking opportunities. In the near future, kayaking and canoeing the Sequatchie River will be available along with a multi-zip line and high ropes course.

In the 16 months since the camp first opened, Renewanation has brought hundreds of Christian teachers and school leaders to the camp for intensive biblical worldview and leadership training. They have also hosted kids’ camps along with a number of other events. Renewanation is currently in the midst of a four year goal (2017-2020) to reach 100,000 new children and help them develop a biblical worldview. In the first two years, they have impacted over 20,000 children through their various divisions of ministry. These ministries include: • Promoting the cause of biblical worldview education through The Renewanation REVIEW

Magazine, speaking, writing and social media • Launching new Christian schools • Revitalizing existing Christian schools • Launching new children and family ministries in churches • Revitalizing existing church ministries • Providing scholarships for children and teachers to attend biblical worldview schools and training events • Providing intensive biblical worldview training at the 800 acre Manderley Christian Camp.

and conference center and becoming “The Center for Biblical Worldview Training” in the Eastern United States. One teacher, who attended a biblical worldview training at Manderley camp, wrote, “Phenomenal! This has been the greatest teacher conference I have attended in my 13 years of teaching. I am leaving here grounded in my beliefs in a way I never have been before. Y’all changed my life and my teaching forever.” As a part of their sustainability plan, Renewanation is now leasing the camp to like-minded organizations and individuals. Scheduling for 2019 is currently in progress, so contact them today for available dates and to learn more about booking your conference, camp or retreat. For more information about Manderley Camp or Renewanation, please contact Julianna Mast at info@manderleycamp.org or visit manderleycamp.org or renewanation.org.

In the years to come, Renewanation envisions the entire 2000-acre ranch developing into a world-class camp

Learning to Fight

his was to teach the future generations of the Israelites how to fight in battle, especially those who had not fought before” (Judges 3:2, HCSB). The book of Judges is the sequel to the book of Joshua. Joshua ends like a blockbuster Hollywood hit. Joshua, the leader of Israel, has led them to their promise. As his time on earth comes to a close, he challenges the people one last time to serve the miracle-working God. The scene pans from the crowd to the face of the leader as he proclaims these famous words "as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Conviction hits like rainstorm and the entire nation agrees to serve the Lord. Israel now has peace in the land and peace in their heart. Roll credits. Joshua's story ends.
The book of Judges picks up where Joshua ends with a flashback telling of the passing of Joshua. The author of Judges had no clue when he penned the book it would be set next to Joshua in the Canon. So under divine inspiration, he retells for us the death of the nation's leader. Except where there had been a happy ending in Joshua's telling, Judges tells of a tension, “After that whole generation (the generation of Joshua) had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel” (Judges 2:10). Somewhere between Jordan crossing and conquering the land, a generation forgot to hand down the most important thing to the children of God: God. A generation did not know about Egypt or the Red Sea. They did not

30 // November 2018

know about the Jordan or Jericho. In turn, did not know the Lord of those miracles.
Israel failed to give them the lessons that had led them to the promises of God. I wonder if when the children of the next generation asked "how did we get here" the parents answer was simply, “It's a long story.” I wonder if in protecting them from the stories of hurt and war, they forget to tell them about the way God triumphed.
I believe we often insulate the next generation from the stories of hurt under the idea of protecting them. But the book of Judges tells us that is not the plan of God.
These are the nations the Lord left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience). Read Judges 3:2 slow. The nations the LORD left. Meaning Joshua and his generation won a lot of battles to settle the land, but the Lord left some "giants" for the next generation to fight. Joshua won Jericho and the hill country and the valleys of Canaan, but God left some enemies for the next generation for this purpose: to learn to fight.
I want to fight all the wars for my kids and those God has given me care over. But that is not my job. Our job is to train them for the fight. Our job is to remind them that they will face darkness and principalities of the evil. Our job is to tell them how God did the miraculous in our lives and can do the same in theirs. We cannot fight their fight for them and the more we try the more likely they are to not know God who fights on their behalf.
In the fight is where you lean in and learn. Or get pummeled by the enemy of this life. It is incredibly hard to not step in when they are getting punched by the enemy, but it is not our fight to fight. God left some enemies specifically for them to face. So they can learn to trust, learn to pray, learn what faith is, learn who he is, and who he has made them to be.

and more.

What you will discover, however, is that life enrichment programs can vary greatly from one community to another. Some communities offer a wide variety of activities and wellness programs, while others offer only those required by state regulations.

As you are visiting and touring senior living communities on a loved one’s behalf, here are a few tips to help you evaluate the strength of their life enrichment programs: • Review the calendar: Ask to see copies of the community’s most recent activity calendars. Try to get calendars for at least two or three months so you can get a true picture of how many and what types of activities are offered. • Assess the activities: Does the calendar show a broad range of activities? Ideally, you will find programs and events that engage the body, mind, and spirit. Also compare the scheduled activities with your family member’s hobbies and interests. Are there things they enjoy? Or things they’ve always wanted to try? If a hobby or interest of your loved one isn’t

So, how important are life enrichment and wellness programs? Do they make a difference in how happy, healthy, and engaged a resident is? Much has been written recently about the dangers of a sedentary life, especially for seniors. It puts people at higher risk for everything, from falls to depression and obesity. Some health professionals go as far as saying a sedentary lifestyle is just as dangerous as smoking. It’s important to find a senior living community committed to a wide variety of life enrichment programs because: • It protects cognitive health: A 2010 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted how important staying socially active is for cognitive health. Participating in activities that challenge and

listed, is it possible to have it added to the schedule? • After hours and weekends: Also look at what happens during the evening hours and on weekends. Are events and activities scheduled then? You want to make sure there are meaningful activities scheduled seven days a week, not just during traditional business hours. • After you review the current activities calendar at any community you are seriously considering, choose a few programs that seem appealing to your family member. Ask the staff if you and your loved one can participate in one or two. It can provide you with good insight about what community life would be like and give you a chance to meet residents.

Five Items of Encouragement by Synthia Kissinger

Show Yourself Friendly Greet one another! It hurts my heart to see someone come into a Christian meeting of any sort and go straight to their seat without communicating with anyone. You may consider yourself to be an introvert or fear that you are not accepted in the group but do your best to push past your feelings, for the benefit of others, and talk to your brothers and sisters in Christ. Greet everyone, not just your friend group. “And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?” (Matthew 5:47). Refute Lies and Negative Self Talk The enemy tries to talk “junk” to us especially after a Bible Study or meeting. Sometimes we start to think that what we had to say was ignorant, that we were really not liked by the group, that our clothes, job, etc. is “less than,” or that

36 // November 2018

people did not respond in the way that we wanted. We must eradicate those thoughts and speak the Word of God in place of lies and harmful thoughts. “…Take every thought captive…” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Stay Connected The enemy loves for us to isolate ourselves from other Christians. We need the strength that comes from the encouragement we receive when we meet together. We are all a part of the Body of Christ and when we miss a meeting that we have committed to there is a void in that group. One will become weak when they forsake the assembling of themselves with other believers and may fall prey to the devourer. “Let us not give up meeting together…” (Hebrews 10:25). Be Productive in God’s Kingdom One reason for inactivity and fear of doing the work of the Lord is the lack of preparation and knowledge of God’s Word. Memorizing Scripture and reviewing daily gives the confidence needed when the Holy Spirit prompts us to witness. The Lord has done wonderful things in the lives of those who memorize scripture. God’s Word is alive, active, and it accomplishes the purpose for which it was sent out. May you read, obey, memorize, and put into action His Holy Word today. “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for … training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Keep a Cheerful Countenance The world sees your face before they encounter your heart. As Christians, we have great reason to be joyful, so our faces should reflect that we are children of the Most High. There are wonderful physical benefits of smiling, so make the effort to smile and bless someone else in the process. We smile when we are joyful on the inside. Do the necessary “Heart Work” to have the desire to smile at everyone. “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit” (Proverbs 15:13).

Disney Rash ne of my patients recently sent a photograph of her lower extremities. She was on fall break in Florida and developed a rash of the inner calf regions. I reviewed the photographs and immediately asked if she was on vacation at Disney World. She confirmed that she was on vacation and had been to the Magic Kingdom the day prior and at Epcot that very day. One of the most common rashes reported from Disney guests is Exercise-Induced Vasculitis (EIV) and is what most people experience when they talk about the Disney rash or the Epcot rash. EIV is also commonly called Golfer’s Vasculitis because the doctor who published an early study on the condition started investigating it as a result of patients who complained of developing a rash on their lower legs and ankles while playing golf.

Most people are not accustomed to walking 5-10 miles in a single day. The venous return system is overwhelmed and not able to transport the venous blood back to the heart. This back up of venous blood causes venous stasis. The rash appears over the inner aspect of the lower extremities from the calf to the ankle and is related to extended periods of long distance walking or standing. People with varicose veins are more prone to developing the rash. Prolonged standing causes vein blood flow stasis. Blood flow backs up and pools in the lower extremities. The legs and ankles begin to swell. Fluid leaks from the veins and capillaries into the soft tissues. The swelling inflames the small blood vessels in the cells and causes red bumps to appear on the surface of the skin directly related to the areas of maximum swelling. This particular rash can be itchy. The reason that the rash doesn’t occur below the sock line is that socks and shoes provide compression that reduces edema and prevents damage to small blood vessels. In fact, compression stocking therapy is a mainstay in the prevention of Disney Rash. This type of rash is not contagious and typically goes away in about a week.

38 // November 2018

How to Avoid Exercise-Induced Vasculitis (EIV):

• Get walking! One of best things you can do is to begin regularly walking in the months prior to your trip to Disney; this will increase your stamina and you’ll enjoy the whole vacation more. • Drink Plenty of Water - It may seem counter-intuitive but drinking water will help reduce swelling. People sometimes decrease their water consumption in the parks because of the cost of bottled water and because Florida tap water has a strong taste. You can get a free cup of filtered ice water at any Disney quick-service restaurant. • Elevate your feet – Once swelling begins, you may be able to decrease it by raising your feet above your heart. • Take Aleve or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) at the beginning of the day. In this case, you’re taking ibuprofen, which has anti-inflammatory properties, to reduce swelling, so take it in the morning, before you start walking in the parks. Consider repeating the dose throughout the day, per package instructions. • Wear Socks – Wearing taller socks or even compression socks will cover the skin and restrict swelling. • Cool the affected area – Cover affected areas with wet towels, get in the swimming pool, or even rub an ice cube over the area, if you’re still in the parks. • Alternate your activities – Look for things like shows, longer rides, and 3D movies that get you off of your feet and out of the sun in the theme parks.

What to Do If You Already Have the Rash

• Use a topical anti-itch ointment. They can give you an ointment at the first aid stands in the park or you can purchase an over-the-counter variety in a pharmacy. Some people swear by those blue, aloe “after burn” gels available in drug stores; others recommend calamine lotion. • Consult a doctor if you get worse or if the rash doesn’t begin clearing on its own in about a week, sooner if your symptoms progress or do not respond to conservative measures. • Consider formal ultrasound review to determine if you have significant venous reflux and varicose veins.

When you study a specific subject, you can always search for multiple words or phrases related to the subject that you are studying. For prayer, you would also want to search “intercession” or “thanksgiving.” These words will generate a few more verses because they are related to prayer. As you conduct these different searches write down a list of scriptures you find in a notebook. As you study in this manner, you do not have to write down every word of a verse; you can just write the actual reference itself. This is called compiling or listing. As a short example, let’s say you started to compile a list of scriptures pertaining to prayer in the New International Version (NIV). Your list would

Italian Lentil Stew alatians 5:24 says, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there” (NLT). There is a lot of talk lately about self-love in regards to taking care of oneself, getting exercise, and eating better. But if taking care of oneself was an act of self-love it wouldn’t be so difficult to put down the brownie and pick up a raw carrot would it? Making the right eating and exercise decisions has more to do with crucifying the flesh than self-love. But as it was said in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” Since we are built for communion with God, it’s imperative that we do the right things to honor this temple he has given us. In the past few years I decided to try a more plantbased diet and eat less sugar. If anyone has tried to give up sugar and meat its not easy at first. The flesh fights hard. However, after a while I didn’t crave it anymore, got sick less, and had more energy. Most of the time my husband doesn’t even realize he didn’t eat meat. This recipe for Italian Lentil Stew is one of those meals and with the leftovers I use it as a filling to make enchiladas for an extra easy meal. Just add your favorite enchilada sauce and some cheese on top and bake until its bubbly.

42 // November 2018

Italian Lentil Stew 16 oz bag of dried black lentils (2) 32 oz containers of Vegetable stock 1 tbsp ground fennel seed (or fennel powder) 3 tbsp organic soy sauce 1 tbsp Italian seasoning 1 28 oz can of organic crushed tomatoes 1 onion chopped 2 carrots chopped 3 cloves chopped garlic 2 tbsp olive oil.

In a Dutch oven or large pot over medium high heat add olive oil, onion, and the carrots. Sauté until onions begin to get translucent and then add the garlic. Add the fennel seed and Italian Seasoning and stir until you start to smell them. Cook a few more minutes and then add the dried lentils. Coat the lentils and cook for a couple of minutes before adding the vegetable stock, crushed tomatoes, and soy sauce. Stir and bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. (If you have a slow cooker this is a great time to transfer the stew and cook on low for 6 hours if you have things to do! ) On the stove cook on low (uncovered) for about 5-6 hours until it’s thick. Serve with grated parmesan or your favorite cheese and some crusty bread.

Gò0dNews Book Review

Chan’s New Church by Daniel Murch

T

his is a must-read book for church leaders and members. Francis Chan writes from his heart throughout this book. He talks about

his own failures and where he felt he went wrong as a pastor as his church was growing. This book is full of knowledgeable nuggets that will make you examine yourself as you read. This book will leave you challenged to rethink the idea of church and how we as Christians can love His bride again. I am going to discuss three quotes that stuck out to me reading this book. I highlighted a lot more, but I want to touch on a few. You will have to buy the book for yourself to get the rest of the treasure!

If we are serious about winning the lost, we must be serious about pursuing unity. I wanted to scream in agreement as I read this sentence in the book. In a world that is so divided, the church needs to be the place that the world looks to for peace. If the church cannot be a place of peace and unity then what is the purpose of the church. Here is a good question to ask yourself: Am I bringing unity to the church?

Do you show up to gatherings looking to serve? This is a hot topic among a lot of churches. The consumer-based church goer. I have been guilty of doing this in church. Some people will go from church to church looking to serve their own personal needs, but the problem is that they’ve become so focused on themselves that the church loses purpose. Church leaders cannot focus on making people happy. This eats away at the mission of the church. Church leaders need to encourage people to serve. I have noticed that once people found their place to serve in church, the consumer-based church goer is gone. It is a mindset that has to change.

It’s time for us to figure out what it means to be the Church in the wild. I leave you with this thought. I am not going to expand a lot on the quote above, but it is reality. It is a crazy time for the church! It is time to release people to be the church. The world is a wild place, and it is time for the church to get in the wild. It is time to stop being caged and going to church for ourselves. It is our time to

Education: The Key to Individuality

s an educator for the past two decades, I have had the opportunity to meet a variety of ‘individuals’. While many people would interpret individuality as an outward appearance or style of dress, individuality has many more facets than just what people see. In fact, the Bible references how God views us in 1 Samuel 16:7. It says that He sees our individual hearts, not our appearance. This scripture supports what countless generations have been told by their parents and other authority figures –not to “judge a book by its cover”. Unfortunately, that is what we do

as a result of human nature. We feel safety if we judge others by the way they look and trust a pre-conceived idea about how that person may act, but how a person looks is not his / her true individuality. So, what is ‘true individuality’? A quick Google search would identify that individuality can be defined as “the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind.” The Old Testament prophet, Jeremiah, identified how God defines the individual persona He created for us by saying, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and

50 // November 2018

not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). This verse says that God created plans for you, and if this is the case, then His plans are tailored to each individual. After all, why would God create the same plan for everyone? It would be useless for everyone to fulfill the same exact plan. The apostle Paul reiterated the unique plan that God has created for each of us, when he wrote, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Through this lens, I have come to see the term “individual’ to describe the students and adults who have discovered the unique plan that God has for them or more fully realized this plan. That is where I believe educators are called to assist in the development of individuality. I believe that the major goals of all educators should be to help students (1) explore their gifts and talents, (2) expand their knowledge base, and (3) have the opportunity to gain experience. Through these three pursuits, our students come to understand their true individuality and ultimately God’s good works and plans for their lives.

Is Forgiveness Obtainable? (Part 3)

hat is your reaction in finding something quite refreshing to you? Would you embrace it and hold on to it for dear life; especially if you're hurting? Embrace and hold on to those things that are good, virtuous, and of edifying content. Let those refreshed feelings keep you involved in the forgiveness process. Good and wholesome things are gifts from God and what an influence they have upon our lives. When an individual allows the forgiveness process to begin in their heart, there has been a seed of tenderness planted within their heart. Nurture that seed of tenderness and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the end result you'll observe in your life. Changes in life can be quite difficult, but when we see the results, we then can be proud of them. Change only comes when one has changed his or her ways to insure the end results will be different. If we always continue in the same actions, we will continue to reap the same results as in the past. Nurture good seed and you will see life changing results. In God's creation plan, he did not intend for anyone to walk through life alone. During the forgiveness process, you need to encourage yourself in the Lord and look to the hills of Zion from where your help for life is found. Also, encourage others in the Lord and you will find encouragement to continue walking the path in life that God has ordained for you. An encourager is always a blessing to others and in return a wonderfully blessed individual. The forgiveness process flourishes and blooms beautifully in an encouraging atmosphere. Sometimes we need to use severance of all ties with individuals, situations, and other possible interferences which could derail the positive progress of the forgiveness process. This action should be carefully considered as the setting of reasonable boundaries placed leaving the possibility of the relationship being restored in the future. The severance should be in place as a protective tool and not being vengeful to harm or further injure either parties involved. We need to keep in touch with the value of each individual that God has

52 // November 2018

so uniquely created in his own image and likeness. Would it be safe to consider that without sincerity embracing the whole forgiveness process, it would be, "I’m sorry I was caught doing wrong," instead of truthful repentant expressions? We need to exemplify an attitude of being serious concerning the situation and approach it with sincerity. If an individual demonstrates sincerity, it eases the process of accepting a mistake or a step backwards during the process of forgiveness. It also

keeps at bay doubt in the beginning and throughout the process concerning the individual’s motive. Sincerity strongly re-establishes trust in relationships allowing the healing process to be beautifully completed. Forgiveness is a wonderful thing as it allows restorative healing to occur in relationships of the lives it touches. No one wants to live in a condition of hurt, anger, or emotional pain for the rest of their lives. Unforgiveness binds people in the bondage of bitterness, anger, and hatred to the point of complete destruction of their lives. Let God's amazing grace touch your life so the forgiveness process can begin in your life today.

Pain to Purpose

was born into bondage. My mother was a paranoid schizophrenic and she was in and out of the metal hospital my whole life. She heard voices. She saw people and things that were not really there. My mother was extremely abusive at the beginning of my life. She locked me in the house would hit me, scream, curse,

and carry on for long hours. I never experienced what “normal” was like as a child. On top of all this, she pulled me out of my school in kindergarten and I didn’t learn how to read or do math until I was almost in the 8th grade. My father was almost totally unspoken for. I never have known any real details about him. When I got to a certain age, I realized my mother needed a

54 // November 2018

mother. I became her mother. I did not have a “normal” or “healthy” childhood by any means. I had to grow up very fast. As you can imagine, this puts a lot of pressure on a young girl. The rebellion started at 11 years old. I began to use drugs, get involved in bad relationships, and hang out with the wrong crowd. I felt so empty inside. I wanted something to fill the void inside me and bring purpose into my life. I wanted someone to love me. I wanted to know what it was like to be in a “normal and healthy” relationship. All I had known was dysfunction. I looked to men to fill the void for a long time. I always thought I had to have a man in my life to be happy. I thought if a man would love me, then maybe he would give me some of what I missed from my Father. This only led to heartbreak after heartbreak and an even greater emptiness inside me. God saved me from destroying my life. The redemption started at 15 years old when I came to New Life Bible College and Norvel Hayes Ministries in Cleveland, Tennessee. I attended summer school and it radically changed my life forever. In summer school, I learned about the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s love. I learned about who I truly was destined to become. I learned my identity and my purpose. I learned who I was in Christ. As I grew up, trials and tribulations came to shake my faith and steal my identity. As I have grown, I have managed to weather life’s storms by holding onto my purpose. God has always been the anchor that holds my soul. God has been my Father when I had no idea who my earthly father was. “Hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters into that within the veil”(Hebrews 6:19). “A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in his holy habitation” (Psalm 68:5).
