How to Win Friends & Influence People
D
ale Carnegie’s book, How to Win Friends & Influence People, was written in 1938 and sold millions of copies. His advice will teach you how
to . . . • Make friends quickly and easily • Increase your popularity • Win people to your way of thinking • Win new customers • Arouse enthusiasm among your colleagues. I know of another book that has likewise stood the test of time. Its subject matter is still helpful and relevant. It's the Bible, the Holy Book—the Word of God. It informs you how to handle your finances, raise a family, be healthy, live forever, have self-confidence, and how to have joy and express it. Everyone wants joy. They may call it happiness, a close relative of joy, but joy goes much deeper and stays much longer. It's not based on the weather, the stock market, personal finances, or even health. It comes from the presence of a Holy God, living in a holy temple in the person of the Holy Spirit. Joy may be one of the most appealing promises of a right relationship with God. Why? Because it's now! The truth of Christ’s return may confuse the nonbeliever; the fact of future judgment may scare them, but the promise of a real, lasting joy attracts them because it's now! People today live for the moment. What's in it for me? Yes, that’s a selfish attitude, but that promise attracts them and the pursuit of joy will change them as they realize it can only be experienced in Christ. Then Christ's return and their future judgment takes on a new perspective. In Luke 10, Jesus chose seventytwo disciples to go to neighboring towns to prepare them for His visit and teaching. He told them not to worry about their needs. Today, you may be rich and famous or broke and 6

unknown, but when people see your commitment and sacrifice, you'll have people following you home. He told them to preach the Gospel, heal the sick, but back that up with joy and rejoicing! Some other scriptures that talk about joy include: • Jeremiah 31:25: “I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing” (NLT). • Psalm 1:1 says you'll have joy if you refuse to follow the advice of the wicked. • John 20:20: The resurrected Jesus entered the room where some of the disciples were, and "They were filled with joy when they saw their Lord!" (NLT). Do you want to win friends and influence people? Rejoice! Let joy motivate you to express it. Why do we want to reach the unsaved? Jesus is coming? Yes, judgment is sure? Yes, but the overriding motivating factor should be our joy in Jesus and our desire to share it with everyone we come in contact with! Do you have joy? Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that it's a product of the fruit of the Spirit! People can tell if we have joy because we can lose happiness, but joy is permanent. First Thessalonians 5:16 says, “Be joyful always,” and Psalm 100:1 admonishes us to “Shout for joy to the Lord” (NIV).

Start Early, Keep the Faith

T
hough I am an English professor, I sometimes have the opportunity to teach my students lessons that aren’t always related to writing or literature. One example I like to illustrate for my classes concerns the ponderous question of “What if . . .?” In this case, the what-if question concerns long-term investing. “What if, in 1970, you had purchased a single share of a new company called Walmart at $16.50 per share? How much money could you have today?” I then proceed to show them that Walmart stock has split 11 times since 1970, so that every one share became two shares during each of those 1-stock splits. Today you would have 2,048 shares of Walmart stock that recently sold for $77 per share, meaning your one share of Walmart stock costing you $16.50 in 1970 (plus broker’s commission, of course) would now be worth a total of $157,696. By the way, I’ve not even taken the time to calculate how Walmart’s dividends would have added to your total wealth during all of these years, but the dividend reinvestment would make this total significantly higher. And all you had to do was “buy and hold” for the long term. Imagine if you’d spent $165 back in 1970 to purchase 10 shares instead of just one? There are two key principles here in this example, as I am quick to explain to my class. First, you had to get in early, in this case in 1970, when the company first sold shares to the public. Secondly, you had to 10

hang on even in times of trouble. You had to resist the temptation to sell your share(s) when the stock market plunged, during the gas crisis of the 1970s, during the stock market crash of 1987, during the Gulf Wars, and during 9/11 and the Great Recession that followed the collapse of the housing market just a few years ago. You had to “keep the faith” during all those trials and tribulations in order to reap the maximum rewards. A spiritual application is not difficult to see. The Bible tells us to “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” (Ecc. 12:1 NIV). By committing our lives and our talents (including our wealth and resources) to God early in our lives, we will reap a greater reward and be able to serve His kingdom that much more. Secondly, as Christians, we have to hang on during times of trouble and never lose our hope and our faith in Christ. Jesus told us clearly that hard times would come: “In this world, you will have much trouble; but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 KJV). So often, we think and act in the short term, focused only on instant gratification and what we want now. By looking long term, both in our financial decisions and in our walk with Christ, we will reap more abundantly in every regard. Dr. Andrew Lee is associate professor of English at Lee University. What foundations are you building for them? Is the foundation one that will bless your future generation, or will it curse them? Your choices today will have an impact on their lives, and you must really look into your heart to see if you are laying the right foundation for blessings! Let’s work on breaking up that hardened heart and allow God to guide us in the rebuilding of our life. He will bring men into your construction zone to help with the different “spiritual trades” during the remodeling. Remember, it is a process that can take years, so don’t get weary in your well doing! (see Gal. 6:9).

A Divine Calling & Purpose
I
n Luke 2 we find the beautiful story of the birth of Christ, and one of the most unique visitations between God and woman that history records. The Holy Spirit wrapped Himself around the humanity of a woman, and deity was conceived for divine purpose. It is a perfect model for any woman bearing the call of God within her spirit. Opportunity begins in the secret place and is always unexpected. Those who pursue the call very rarely find it. Those who pursue ministry as their goal already reflect a misappropriation of priorities. Mary was faithfully doing the mundane tasks of daily life when she was divinely interrupted by the call and destiny of God. God is always looking for the unassuming and the undetected, and 2 Chronicles 16:9 lets us know He searches for those who have a pure heart to show Himself strong on their behalf. I pray for a generation of women who would not seek title, position, or ambition, but would faithfully seek God in a daily walk of intimacy. Intimacy leads to conception, and only then will we see the prophetic fruitfulness prophesied in Joel 2. Once one’s destiny is unveiled and the anointing is imparted, the real test begins. Mary had no tangible evidence of her encounter, only her story. Most rejected her, and even her own fiancé sought to put her away. Mary could have defended herself, become bitter, launched an initiative against men, and campaigned for women’s rights. Mary, however, allowed the Lord to speak for her. When God puts His mark and anointing on your life, you don’t have to defend it because God himself will plead your case. You don’t have to push and shove to make room for yourself. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:16 that your gifts will make room for you. Mary surrendered to the plan of God and He, in turn, sent an angel to Joseph. Mary carried the precious promise while Joseph faithfully guarded the anointed of God. I pray for more “Josephs” in this hour—men who are not afraid to risk their own reputation or agenda to guard the anointing on their wives and daughters. 14 October 2014
It wasn’t long before no one could deny the fruit of Mary’s womb. Her body began to stretch and grow to accommodate the Seed inside her. I believe as women in ministry in this hour, we need to allow the anointing to show what’s inside. Don’t be concerned with your critics. There comes a time in your season of destiny that what’s been going on in private will show openly to all. I pray this over the Church: • That we begin to talk less about what we are going to do and just do it. • That we would talk less about healing and just operate in demonstration of it. • That we would talk less about evangelizing and just reach out to our community around us. • That we would talk less about a move of God and pray until heaven invades earth. I pray over every called woman of God that you would surrender to the purpose of the Almighty. I pray that fear and anxiety of rejection would leave you and God himself would speak for you. I pray Josephs would be placed in your life and ministry to guard what has been placed inside you. I pray that His call would consume you and stretch you to the place that it undeniably shows. As exhausted parents worrying over our children, their diets, their habits, their schedule, their education, their eternity, we will find rest for our souls when we hand over the heaviness that such an important task of child-rearing brings upon our shoulders. I encourage you today to love God and teach your children to love God. When the odors of fear, self-doubt, and thoughts of inadequacy waft over you, rejoice in the sweet fragrance of God’s perfect and eternal love for you and your children.

“I
hate people!” Those words actually came out of my mouth this morning as I drove my daughter to school. By 8 a.m. I had already been subjected to the chaos of morning traffic: people driving too fast, too slow, recklessly or just in my way. Plus, I had received a call from my youngest daughter’s school informing me that her jacket and purse had gone missing, and she had only been at school for half an hour. What is wrong with people? I thought. When I heard myself say out loud, in front of my daughter, that I hated people, the breath went right out of me. I asked myself, What is wrong with me? Doesn’t Matthew 15:18 say, “But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart. . . .” Is that how I really feel? Is that the message I want to convey to my children? I can hear them now, “Mom said it’s okay to hate people when they aren’t acting the way you want them to.” Really? Of course not. I love people, right? But I had a plan for the day, and these folks were getting in my way. Some of them were even making mistakes and bad decisions. My harsh reaction was justified, wasn’t it? Of course not, not if I’m to live my life in a way that conforms to the image of Christ. I’m so glad Jesus didn’t feel the way I sometimes do. As He walked along the road, how often was He interrupted by someone who had a need—someone who wasn’t doing what they should do, or who had rejected His 22

plan for their lives. The story of the rich young ruler is a poignant reminder of Jesus’ love for those around Him. You probably know the story well. “As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’” (Mark 10:17 NIV). “Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth” (vv. 21-22). There’s a lot packed into those verses, but it’s the words, “Jesus looked at him and loved him” that impact me most today. Jesus knew this young man had selfish motives. He knew that his response would not be one of joy, of worship, of love, or even gratitude. No, this young man went away downcast. He had been offered the treasures of heaven but denied them for earthly pleasures. Yet, Jesus looked at him and loved him. Thankfully, He does the same for us today. People make mistakes every day. For some, it seems that bad decisions are a way of life. Sometimes it can be hard to deal with those mistakes and those people gracefully. holesterol isn’t a dirty word. There are many misconceptions about cholesterol. Cholesterol is a necessary part of a healthy body. The problem arises when there is too much cholesterol. First, let’s look at what cholesterol is. Cholesterol is made up of two types of lipids, triglycerides, and Lp(a), which is a variation of LDL. These four things together make up your total cholesterol count. Of the two different kinds of lipids, one is good (HDL) and the other is bad (LDL). HDL stands for High-Density Lipoproteins, the good type of cholesterol. They should make up one-fourth to one-third of your total cholesterol. This type of cholesterol actually seems to help protect your heart against heart disease. If your HDL is low, your risk of heart disease increases. Science is still learning about it, but HDL seems to carry the LDL away from the heart to the liver so it can be passed from the body. Some experts believe that this process can slow down

the build-up of plaque in the arteries by removing excess cholesterol. LDL stands for Low-Density Lipoproteins, the bad type of cholesterol. Too much of LDL can build up in the arteries and form plaque when it combines with other substances. Plaque clogs the arteries and causes them to be less flexible, which may lead to heart disease. Most people think that only people who are overweight need to be concerned about high cholesterol, but that can be a deadly mistake. Cholesterol can be a problem with anyone, regardless of age or weight. High cholesterol may be the result of your genetic heritage or because of your lifestyle. You can’t do anything about your genes, but you can change your lifestyle. Let’s look at some lifestyle changes that you can make, whether you already have high cholesterol or you are at risk. These tips can be used for anyone who has high cholesterol because of their genes or lifestyle choices. Always have your cholesterol monitored by a doctor to help evaluate

your progress. One of the first things you need to do is become active. Twenty to thirty minutes of physical activity a day can make a huge difference. Physical activity helps raise your HDL, which decreases the risk of heart disease and strengthens the heart, lowers blood pressure, and helps manage weight. A strong heart, lower blood pressure, and weight loss will help an individual live a longer and healthier life. Making dietary changes will help even more. First, you have to lower your saturated fat intake and avoid trans fat in your diet. This doesn’t mean you eliminate fat from your diet, because it is still needed—especially in healthy forms like olive oil. You also need to eat healthy fiber such as whole grains, legumes, fruit, and vegetables. Your diet should also include lean proteins such as fish and poultry, and some low-fat dairy products. A healthy diet, together with an active lifestyle, can lower high cholesterol and the risk of heart disease without medication. Discuss any changes and evaluate your progress with a doctor to decide if you need medication as well as lifestyle changes. Your health is in your hands. Identity In Christ:
I
The Formative Power of the Cross
dentity is the unique blueprint of identifying factors that make up who we are as individuals. It is a complex blend of our personalities, our surroundings, our relationships, and beyond that create each of us—factors about us that cause others to know who we are. In the same way, identity in Christ is the factors about us that cause others to also know whose we are. So then, do we truly understand that who we are is distinct from what we do? Your identity is not cashier at Taco Bell, or high school student. Those are things you do; your identity is what makes you who you are! • Are you loving? • Are you generous? • Are you humble? These characteristics are part of your identity. Learning, for example, that you have a heart of compassion, a skill, and a desire to teach others gives you a starting point. This is where a lot of confusion surfaces. Many Christians begin this process. After discovering their gifts, they seek to put them into practice immediately, and these gifts become their identity. This is an injustice to the fullness of God’s plan! When a potter is making something from clay, he begins with a shapeless mass. He has an idea of what he wants to shape and begins. After forming, the clay has to be dried in the fire to strengthen it for its tasks. To jump headfirst into the gifts and passions you have without following Christ’s example for the next step would be akin to the pottery half-shaped and far from the strengthening heat of the fire, jumping from the potter’s wheel and attempting to be of use. We need the fullness of God’s process! So what is the next step? Our next step is to accept the invitation to the cross. 26

It is not an invitation to come and admire Christ’s sacrifice but an invitation to join Christ in being sacrificial. “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20, NLT). Jesus extends an invitation to us into His identity, an identity we can only gain by means of the cross—not just from Christ’s willingness to lay down His life but an identity in Christ that develops when we lay our own life down at the cross. The apostle Paul goes on to explain the identity exchange that happens at the cross: “For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3, NLT). A proper understanding of “hidden” here is not the idea of our identity simply hiding in God, but more accurately that our identity dies, and who we are becomes absorbed, even overcome by God who replaces it with the fullness of His identity for us. Our anger, selfishness, and sinfulness are replaced completely by God’s amazing love, compassion, and humility! Joel Rogers is a loving husband, father, and minister. “FAIR TRADE”

F
air Trade is a global ministry that has been fighting world poverty for more than 65 years. Despite being very successful, we are still relatively unknown. “Shop the World Gifts” joined this fight eight years ago by opening what is now the largest Fair Trade store in East Tennessee in Englewood. People often ask, “Why Englewood?” That’s where God planted us, and He has blessed us with a wonderful customer base from Knoxville to Chattanooga. Once people understand the ministry and power of Fair Trade, they will make an extra effort to shop with us. We help some of the poorest people in the world—third-world artisans who are certainly among those Jesus referred to as “the least of these.” These artisans have been blessed by God with tremendous artistic ability, but they have no 28

market for their products. The benefits and objectives in Fair Trade are many. 1. Fair Trade provides the artisans with an ongoing income that will allow them to feed their family, have a home, healthcare, education, and a good standard of living. The artisans are paid fairly six months to a year before the merchandise is available for retail sale. According to Fair Trade Resource Network, the artisans receive 20 to 40 percent of the retail price. In conventional trade, the producer receives about one percent. 2. There can be no forced or child labor involved with Fair Trade merchandise. In the Ivory Coast alone, there are 19,000 nine to twelve year olds sold into forced labor every year. When we buy Fair Trade, we can be confident there is no forced or child labor involved. 3. All Fair Trade items must be
produced in a manner that is safe and environmentally friendly. Fair Trade items are made mostly from natural, recycled, or repurposed materials.
Fair Trade Organizations
The merchandise from “Shop the World Gifts” comes from twenty-five Fair Trade organizations and several missionaries who shop for us when on mission trips. The Fair Trade organizations (Serrv and Ten Thousand Villages are the largest) have an ongoing presence in different countries. In many cases, they are working with third- or fourth-generation artisans as many of the skills are passed down from generation to generation. We have merchandise from more than forty-five thirdworld countries. The Fair Trade organizations help the artisans with product design, quality control, financial management, and life skills.
“Shop the World Gifts” customers can choose from handmade jewelry, scarves, shawls, skirts, nativities, baskets, pottery, wood items, musical instruments, soapstone carvings, and much more. There is something for everyone and for every budget. Prices range from $4 to $400, and each item is unique. “Shop the World” is proud to offer a wide selection of highquality merchandise. For example, we have over a hundred nativities, each made through eyes of artisans that represent their view of the birth of Jesus.
“The Least of These”
Not only do the artisans benefit from Fair Trade, but customers get a fair price also. In conventional retail, as many as eight middle people are required to get the product to market. These costs are added to the retail price. Many of these functions in the Fair Trade chain are accomplished by volunteer labor. Joan and Bill do not take any salary, income, or profit from the sales, which is true of many who are involved in Fair Trade; it’s all about “the least of these.” The artisans in the various countries have formed co-ops that collect and ship the merchandise. The co-ops use their profits to build schools, hospitals, churches, and communities. In 2008 a co-op in Kenya, Africa, used its profits to start an elementary school for seventy-five students and in 2010,
the number increased it to 150 students. This education is free in a country where traditionally the parents must pay, or the child receives no education. Good things happen with every penny of Fair Trade purchases. Sixty Five to Seventy percent of all Fair Trade purchases are by women, many widowed by war and disease. Recently, a co-op asked a group what they needed and the answer was washing machines. Later, one of the ladies
said, “I used to spend all day every Sunday in the river washing clothes. Now we go to church, have dinner, and visit family and friends.” This was possible because of customers who shop Fair Trade.

We have been to many churches throughout East Tennessee as well as several other states. In addition to the largest selection of Fair Trade merchandise in East Tennessee, we also have a few local, regional, and traditional items—as well as a great selection of gourmet foods. An exciting aspect of Fair Trade is that it is not charity. It does not rob the artisans of their dignity but simply offers a helping hand so they can use what God has so richly blessed them with to support themselves and their families Every Fair Trade purchase
Fighting Poverty
The co-ops and Fair Trade organizations are directly involved with fighting poverty and all its causes and effects: alcohol; and drug abuse, sex trafficking, forced labor, preventable child deaths (18,000 per year), disease injustice, and much more. A Notre Dame University study revealed that seven and a half-million artisans and their families live economically stable lives through Fair Trade. The greatest aspect is that all proceeds from the festival are donated to charity. “It’s going to be better than ever this year,” said Event Coordinator Sandi Martin. “This is Cleveland Apple Festival’s thirteenth year, and it’s gotten better every year. We’re looking forward to favorable weather, tasty food, and great fun.” On Saturday morning, the Cleveland Apple Festival will hold its dessert contest, with winners announced and prizes awarded at 2 p.m. The Little Miss Apple Blossom contest will be held Sunday, October 19 at 5 p.m. “Just seeing those little girls dressed up in their best country girl outfits will be worth coming for,” said Contest Coordinator Christa Swartz. The Kids’ Zone, sponsored by Trailhead Bicycle Company, offers free bounce houses, petting zoo, contests, and pony rides. Trailhead will also give away two bicycles. any times I have been asked, “What is the real secret to a long-lasting, happy marriage?” Usually I give some pithy, poorly attempted humorous response like, “For us, I think it has been that we were just too stupid to quit.” There might be some serious truth in there somewhere; however, I have discovered that regardless of a couple’s particular situation, applying biblical principles to the relationship always leads to improvement (can everyone say a big collective “duh!”), regardless of whether they are believers or not. I realize this may seem elementary to some. However, sometimes even the most devout Christians can forget their Christian graces as soon as they walk into their homes with their most important relationships—their spouses and their children. Men are often patient, understanding, and forgiving with business partners or employees. But those same men can be inconsiderate, unforgiving, and outright rude, many times not even taking the time to listen to their wives or children. The

same women who are caring and compassionate with their friends can become demanding and insensitive at home. There are hundreds of passages of Scripture to draw relationship principles from, but I would like to focus on just two verses that contain nine simple but profound words that, if applied, could heal broken marriages, put struggling marriages on a firm foundation, revitalize stagnant marriages, and give happy marriages a deeper intimacy. In fact, applying these nine words could revolutionize homes and families! It may seem like a tall order, but I am convinced it is true. Follow along with me. The apostle Paul said, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol” (Gal. 5:22-23 NIV). Read that again and let those few words sink in for a minute . . . then pause. Try putting your name at the beginning of that verse and read it again: “David is loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, full of goodness, always
faithful, gentle, and operates in selfcontrol.” These nine words all address behaviors and attitudes. This is not an opportunity to start pointing the finger of blame at your spouse. Taking responsibility for how we act, regardless of what our spouse does, can radically impact our home for the better. I believe that when we pursue and practice these nine aspects of the Spirit by addressing our attitudes and behaviors, the Holy Spirit will come alongside and help us along the way. • Spirit-led people do not throw fits of rage; they practice self-control. • Spirit-led people are concerned for the good of others. • Spirit-led people are patient, kind, and forgiving. When we begin to act in a way that is consistent with what we say we believe, I promise you the Lord will bless it. Imagine what would happen in your home and marriage if you applied and practiced these nine aspects of the fruit of the Spirit. D
o not believe the sales pitch: The Christian life can be challenging at times? One of the hardest aspects of being a believer is discerning the voice and direction of God. It is sometimes hard to tell if that still small voice comes from us, from heaven, or from the bad pizza we had for dinner. Paul wrote in Philippians: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whosoever things are of good report; if there be any praise, think on these things” (4:8 KJV). Unlike some believers, I do not think this verse means we cannot own televisions or go to the movies. I want to be a Christian, but I also want to keep up with culture and know what is in the news. The difference comes in the final four words. I am going to be aware of the

selfishness and vanity of our culture, as well as the terrible conflict going on the Middle East, but I am going to choose to think on the “things” that are godly— namely, that God is still sovereign and in charge, in spite of what the news anchor tells me. It can be hard to delve into God’s plan with culture blaring so loudly in our ears. This concept of culture includes entertainment and news, but it may also include our Christian micro-culture. Sometimes we are guilty of sending the wrong messages. For instance, I do not believe that it is always God’s plan that we choose the most difficult and unlikely path in order to prove God’s faithfulness. I know pastors who seem to make their decisions based on this precept, and sometimes I wonder if God is really calling them to their series of trials, or if they simply choose to stumble into the “lion’s den” and then wait for God to show up. On the other hand, I do not believe that God’s plan for us on earth is simply to prosper, multiply, and be selfish. As the great writer Dietrich Bonhoeffer pointed out, God’s plan often costs us something. If our faith is centered around moving up in our business and buying a larger vehicle, then we have settled for the brand of treasures that are eventually eaten by moths and rust. While God may want to bless us, often there is a deeper meaning of what is to be blessed. This materialistic and shallow flavor of Christianity sounds strikingly just like the dominant voice of culture, which says, “You deserve everything; get the new version; eat or be eaten.” Perhaps the truth is that God’s voice is the one telling us to take the path that includes the best use of our talents and involves an element of selflessness. If the road is unclear, it may be that prayer is needed . . . or just a little more time.

decided to spend time with one of the quieter patients this afternoon. As I approached her, I could see resistance on her countenance. She had a wall of protection up, and as I walked toward her, I simply smiled, introduced myself, extended my hand, and asked her name. She proudly told me her name, and I sat down beside her and began the delicate task of engaging conversation and building rapport. When I asked her to share her story, she did so with brevity. I then decided to face the true issue at hand—her depression. As I did, she began to interview me! She asked several questions about depression, coping skills, and family relationships. I was amazed and felt honored that she trusted me enough to gradually bring down a portion of her emotional “wall” and talk. We smiled at each other, and I assured her that she was not alone, and that she would feel better. As the interview ended, I thanked her for allowing 40

me to hear her story. Then she asked me a powerful question: “You’re a Christian, aren’t you?” I told her that I was and asked how she could tell. “I can tell by the way you act,” she said. Wow! She could tell by the way I act. What a motivation that has given me to remember that someone is always looking at my actions. My gestures, tone, and behavior are all representations of my beliefs and Christian declaration. Because I have a heavenly view, my lifestyle, my reactions, and my treatment of others are different from the worldview. Because I desire a better country, I have determined to live in such a way that my character will be
acceptable in God’s sight! Every day I am learning to consecrate my life to God, pray for His direction and protection, and intentionally showcase Him to the world. Today and every day, it is my desire to be more like my heavenly Father and to desire my purposed home—the home I was created to dwell in for eternity. Today I want others to see where my loyalties lie and to know without confusion that I am a heaven-bound, daughter of the Most High God by the way I act. What do your actions say about you? one of my favorite things
to make because it's so easy
and so versatile with many different toppings.
If you don't like beans in your chili, you can
just leave them out of this recipe, but I like the beans because they give it more thickness and flavor. If you don't like the chili really spicy, you can replace the tomatoes and green chili peppers with diced tomatoes. You can adjust the spices to your taste.
Recipe
• 1 pound ground beef • 2 small cans tomato sauce • 2 cans diced tomatoes with green chili peppers (including the liquid) • 1-2 cans chili beans •1 medium sized onion, diced • Chili seasoning (cumin, chili powder, and garlic powder) • Salt and Pepper to taste

rown the ground beef in a large pot with the diced onion; then drain the grease. Add the chili seasoning and 1/4 cup of water and stir to combine the seasonings. Add the other ingredients ,along with about 2 cups of water (this depends on how thin or thick you like your chili). You
can add more water if you like it thinner. Bring all the ingredients to a simmer, cover the pot, and simmer on medium low for about 20 minutes. * Yields about 6 servings

SHOULD CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE THE FEASTS OF THE LORD? by Mike Shreve
A
ccording to Leviticus 23, there are seven primary FEASTS OF THE LORD, spiritual celebrations mandated by God himself: 1. PASSOVER 2. UNLEAVENED BREAD 3. FIRSTFRUITS 4. PENTECOST 5. TRUMPETS 6. THE DAY OF ATONEMENT 7. TABERNACLES Whether we like to admit it or not, modern Christianity has been corrupted with non-biblical celebrations like Easter and Christmas (a shocking statement I know, but please, don’t stop reading). For instance, the word Easter is found only once in the Bible (Acts 12:4 KJV) and is incorrectly translated from the word pascha, always rendered “Passover.” It stems from the worship of a false deity named Eastre, the goddess of spring. What do eggs and rabbits have to do with the Resurrection? Absolutely nothing. They are symbols of fertility, part of the heathen Spring Festival. Similarly, Christmas (December 25) is all about the Winter Solstice and filled with non-biblical, pagan symbolism (yule logs, mistletoe, decorated evergreen trees, Santa Claus). Furthermore, it would have been highly unlikely for Jesus to be born at that time, since shepherds would have long before brought their

sheep in from the fields.
ALL MAJOR NEW COVENANT EVENTS COINCIDED WITH A FEAST. Every important event of the New Covenant perfectly coincided with the celebration of a biblical feast, (an amazing correlation caused by the genius and sovereignty of God). • The Crucifixion took place during Passover. • The Resurrection took place during Firstfruits. • The outpouring of the Holy Spirit took place during Pentecost. Following this pattern, it is logical to believe that the Messiah probably was born around the beginning of fall, when shepherds were still in the fields and the Feast of Tabernacles was being celebrated (a memorial of how God “tabernacled” among the Israelites during their wilderness journey). How fitting it would have been for the Messiah to actually “tabernacle” among us in the form of a baby, during the very feast that prophetically foretold such a grand event!
WHAT SHOULD CHRISTIANS DO? Every church should celebrate the feasts. However, if it ever becomes required ritual (necessary for righteousness), religious legalism has entered and the Crucified One is robbed of His glory. We should honor
the feasts because they are replete with symbolism about God’s plan of Redemption, but not to the point where we give more importance to mere symbols than the glorious events they symbolized. • It is far more powerful to be washed in Jesus’ blood (the true Passover Lamb) than to eat a Passover meal. • It is far more powerful to experience Pentecost (being filled with the Spirit) than to learn how the firstfruits of the wheat harvest were offered on that day. • It is far more powerful to have the Messiah “tabernacle” in your heart than to build a sukkah in your backyard (the traditional, small, threewalled, branch-covered structure Jews erect to remind them of the wilderness journey). The real issue is not whether or not we celebrate the biblical feasts, but the glorious truth that the Son of God came and fulfilled them all. Let’s celebrate that every day of our lives!

I
t is not unusual for me to be contacted by a suicidal young person about once a week. This week was a doubleheader. Two young people I care very much about were reaching out for a reason to live. They do not know each other and live a thousand miles apart, but they have so much in common. You may ask, “What has devastated their lives to the point of such hopelessness?” Extreme abuse, incest, violence, and hatred are all they knew the first few years of their lives. A hug, a gentle touch, a kind word were as rare as fine gold. Pain, fear, anger, sorrow, and the resulting rebellion were familiar. It’s probably safe to assume that an addiction to prescription or illegal drugs and alcohol were involved. These two people, like millions around the world, grew up trying to reconcile in their minds why they were mistreated. Many assume that they caused the abuse and neglect because they were told, “You are bad,” and “You made me do this to you!” Many fight to be accepted 50

as “abnormal” in order to fit in somewhere. This somewhere may encourage emotional withdrawal from family, mandate many hours of violent music and games daily, promote self-worthlessness, teach mutilation, and lie by saying that evil is good and good is evil. As Christians and adults, how do we stop this cycle? We must do what Jesus commanded His disciples to do just before ascending into heaven (see Matt. 28:19) and Ephesians 6:19: “Boldly make known the . . . gospel.” The Bible is filled with instances when God turns His back on individuals and even nations for choosing darkness (idolatry, witchcraft, magic, and sorcery) over His light. Idolatry is putting anything before our relationship with God. Witchcraft, magic, and sorcery use ungodly powers to wreck a life instead of relying on God and His Word. These things are strictly prohibited by God in the Bible. Don’t take my word for it. Search God’s Word. It’s fast and easy with the many online Bible Web sites.
Matthew 28:19 says, “Go ye therefore and teach. . . .” Teach what? Teach to forgive even though the criminal is guilty. Jesus forgives although we are guilty and we do not deserve forgiveness. Jesus paid the price for our eternal life. We need to know Jesus and make Jesus known (see Rom. 10:9). That same resurrection power that saved Jesus from death provides us with eternal life if we accept, believe, repent, confess, and allow God to change us to look and act more like Himself. Hurting people hurt people. Together, let’s break the cycle through prayer and repentance and bring hope to hurting people (see Acts 8:22). A closing prayer: I’m sorry, Father God, for believing the lies of the devil. I know You are good and that I can trust You. Thank You for loving me! I have hope in Jesus!

t age 10, I received my first archery bow for Christmas. It was a Bear Fiberglass Recurve Bow with three wooden arrows
and a thin imitation leather quiver. That bow captured my heart for adventure, excitement, and dreams.
This past fall on my day off, I was archery
hunting in McMinn County. It was a beautiful morning. As I watched the sun rise, memories of that Christmas morning and that very first bow came back to me. Though it was thirty-six years later, I was living the adventure, the excitement, and the dreams of a 10 year old that very morning. For some reason, I was compelled to write. Not having a pen or paper, I took out my phone and began typing in the memo app. Please understand, I am not a poet. Keep the heckling and grading to a minimum. I just wrote what came to my mind and heart:
The Yellow Orange Blaze The yellow orange blaze of a mornings woods lights up the forest floor. Deer soon will walk this eastern guide as they have of days gone by. A coolness in the air and thumb gone numb tells me the season is here. The snap or crunch or grunt you hear knowing they are near. A mysterious gray ghost appears and stands ever quietly trying to disappear. I will raise my bow with nocked arrow true as my hearts pounds the silence in this chill. A release, a smack, and a crimson glimpse tells me I passed through. Thank you, Lord, for the morning woods where yellow orange blazes dance; a blessing to see as another season gives a chance. It’s that time again. Take the opportunity to experience your own adventure. You have to begin somewhere. Why not here and now? There is an adventure to behold. Take hold of it and see what Christ does in and through you.

ometimes we get into trouble in our churches and ministries because we do not communicate clearly what we believe God is asking us to do. We just push ahead and do it without informing others of the mission and take them with us. Here are a few things you can do to inform others of what you are doing and invite them to come along with you. 1. Pray. Nothing should ever be started unless it has been bathed in prayer. Spend quality time in prayer. 2. Communicate. Sometimes we fail to tell others what God is doing and wants to do in our ministries. Telling others will allow them to ask questions and then they will be er understand what we are about. Talk to them. Write to them. Make posters for them to read. The means is not important. Just do it! 3. Spend time with leadership. The leaders around you in other ministries can help you communicate your vision, but you must spend time with them explaining it to them so they will understand it enough to explain to others. Church members who do not understand what you are doing will seldom come to you and ask questions, but they will go to one of the other leaders in your church and ask them. If the other leaders know and can explain it to the members, then the members 54

will understand and all will be well. 4. Find between one and four people to invest in personally. These are people who can take over parts of the vision as it grows and you need help. Never do anything alone if you can get someone else to do it with you. This not only mentors them, but it will prepare them to one day be a leader. 5. Schedule events and get started. Many times we have good ideas and spend lots of time planning, but we fail to get started. Pu ing events on the calendar will discipline you to get going in order to meet those deadlines. 6. Set weekly meetings with key people. This will give you someone to bounce ideas o of and give you opportunity to hear what others are doing and thinking. Having meetings and reporting on the status of the implementation of your vision disciplines you to plan and implement those plans because you know you will be accountable to those folks in the meeting. Looking at all of these at once can cause you to shake in fear and never get started. However, get started. Start slow and keep going. Do something every day to keep things moving forward.
