The Balance of Fear

hat is fear and what does the Bible tell us about it? If you turn on your favorite Christian radio station, you have a pretty decent chance of hearing one of the many songs recently released about fear. It may be a song reminding us that fear is a liar or another breaking up with fear. It’s like everyone is finally realizing what the enemy has known all along. Fear is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, obstacle to the church. So, back to the question. The dictionary defines fear as “To be afraid of someone or something likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.” Now this can be the case for many people. Fear is often portrayed as evil or something bad. However, in biblical terms there are two different types of fear. The first of these two types is Godly fear, this type of fear should not be our “torment” but should be valued beyond all measure. This fear is what keeps us in spiritual grace with the Lord. The Bible tells us in Psalms 128:14, “How blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy and it will be well with you. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house, your children like olive

8 // October 2018

plants around your table. Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.” In the beginning of the verse it says “How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord.” God is clearly letting us know that the only fear we should have is the fear of God and his almighty power. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:4 “The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life.” We are told in this verse that we will be rewarded for fearing the Lord. This first kind of fear is a gift. It is an understanding of our relationship to our Lord and Savior. The second type of biblical fear is evil. It is the evil that paralyzes us. In the movies, it is monsters or boogie men. In reality it is whatever cripples us from doing what pleases God. It robs us of our potential and leaves us living lesser lives. The fear of evil can take on many forms. It can be as simple as being afraid of the dark or it can be fear of something more real like loss. Regardless, fear can replace God at the center of our thoughts. It is the same fear that caused the disciples to fear the storm with Jesus in the boat. John 4:18 tells us, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” When we keep God at the center of our thoughts, His authority overshadows anything the enemy could bring against us. Through putting him first we show Satan that he has no power over us. The chains of fear are broken at even the thought of God and his merciful ways. Matthew 10:28 tells us, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” This verse sums up everything I have been sharing. We have no reason to fear anything in this world because we fear the only power that should be feared, Our Creator, Savior, and God. In closing, Paul puts it perfectly in 2 Timothy 1:7 when he writes, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” This is my favorite verse to read when I am under attack by the enemy. It reminds me that the battle between these two kinds of fear is not a battle at all. Jesus has already won.

DOW 100,000? DOW 1,000,000? MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE

Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

I

’m writing this article for the October issue, and October has traditionally been one of the “scariest” months for the stock market (it’s Halloween, after all). In fact, October often shows a decline in at least some of the stock market indexes, with the worst example being the “Black Monday” crash of October 19, 1987 when the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA or simply “The Dow”) plummeted by over 22% in one day. So I thought, ironically, that October would be a good time to share some optimistic news about the stock market. Here it is: the Dow, which stands at around 26,000 points as of this writing, will reach 100,000 points in fifteen years if it averages 10% annually (including dividends) starting now, which is its historical average since 1926. Moreover, in approximately 38 years, the Dow would hit 1,000,000 (yes, one million) if it continued that 10 percent annual return. For the naysayers who point to 7.75% annually as the historical return of the Dow since 1926 (which excludes dividends reinvested), it would still hit the 100,000-point milestone in eighteen years instead of fifteen. I realize the Dow is a list of merely 30 stocks, and that it doesn’t really represent the entire stock market. But nevertheless, the Dow is a useful measure of the larger markets, for as the Dow rises, so too typically do stock indexes like the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and the Wilshire 5000 since these most often (but not always) correlate over long periods of time. Certainly, there will be years when the market has a negative return, and perhaps even loses 30 percent or more in a single year. But over longer time periods, the

10 // October 2018

market tends to revert to its historical annual average return (hence the term “historical average”). So when is the “best” time to invest in the stock market? For those who have been eagerly hoping for the answer to this burning question, write this down quickly! Here are the top three times to invest in the stock market, ranked in order: (1) many years ago (2) yesterday (3) today. You get my point—the time is “now.” Trying to time the market and “sit on the sidelines” until the “big drop in stock prices” happens is a mistake. Think of the many people who pulled their investments out of the market during the 2008-09 “crash” and sat on the sidelines for the past decade waiting for the right moment to “jump back in” the market. They have missed a chance to more than triple their money over the past ten years (ouch). And here’s another fact: the stock markets overall go “up” about 75% of the time. By this, I don’t mean to imply that markets will be “up” three out of every four days. In any given year or period of years, anything is possible and unpredictable. But historically, the markets rise much more than they fall. So the odds are, your investments in the overall market will grow over time, especially over longer periods of ten years or more. I sell neither stocks nor mutual funds; as the saying goes, “I have no dog in this hunt.” But if you have money set aside for a long-term goal—such as retirement or kids college—and you kept it in a bank account or under a mattress for the next ten, twenty, or thirty years, you may regret that decision when the Dow hits 100,000. Proverbs 12:5a—“The plans of the righteous are just . . .”

Mortality?

I

by Charles Laws

n the past several months I have witnessed the passing of two old friends and two acquaintances. This, along with the passing of my beloved wife in 2015, has caused me to be more aware of my own mortality. When we are young we hardly ever think of the fact that we are mortal, but the older we get the more we know that it is a reality. In the search for an answer we consider several questions that are not pleasant but must be answered. They are: Are we perfect? What should we do? And what do the scriptures say about it?

more to the poor and needy. It is quiet disappointing to find that if I do all of the above I will still not be perfect. However it is comforting to know that I will be a much stronger Christian if I actually accomplish the above. In reading the Bible and praying more I find peace in handling the reality of my mortality. In John 3:36 we read, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” All of us are imperfect and have sinned. God is a holy God and has wrath on the one who has sinned. In His death on the cross, Jesus took the wrath of God for all of mankind! If we accept Him, God’s wrath has been imputed to Him. If we reject Him, God’s wrath remains on us. Have you ever seen a stream that was polluted with mud? As it flows rapidly over beds of rocks it becomes clean and as it peaks it appears to have a white color about it! This is what we refer to as “whitewater.” The flowing of the water rapidly over the rocks has a cleansing affect! To spiritualize the above, consider the old hymn There is a Fountain Filled with Blood: “There is a fountain filled with blood

12 // October 2018

And sinners plunged beneath that flood

Loose all their guilty stains.” In 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, Paul writes concerning the resurrection of Christ from the dead and in verses 12-57 he writes concerning the resurrection of the dead. He concludes in verse 55, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, Is your sting?” Through what Christ has done, mortality is changed to immortality!

About The Author

The first question now becomes “Am I perfect?” The honest answer is “No.” I am a flawed human being. Despite the fact that I have been a Christian for many years, I still have places where I fall short of perfection. Certainly, I will pray about the areas where I am not perfect and ask the Lord to forgive me and help me in those areas. Despite this, I find myself saying in all honesty “I am doing the best that I can do, and still I am not perfect.” The second question becomes “What should I do?” Here, the answers are somewhat obvious: read the Bible more, memorize scripture more, pray more, and give

That wound was stitched up in the spirit realm by the Heavenly Father and it did not happen quickly. I first had to make a choice to forgive. Forgiveness is a choice. Secondly, because I made that choice when I did not feel like it, I had to make a decision to speak it out loud even when I did not feel it. By speaking it out loud, eventually my flesh caught up with my spirit and one day while speaking it, I realized the hurt was not painful and eventually one day while speaking it I became excited that not only was it not as painful but I meant it. Heads Up!

I

by Alicia Klepper

played softball throughout my childhood. From tee ball to coach-pitch to fast-pitch, one mantra always rang out through each season, “Heads up!” As a five-year-old picking flowers in the outfield grass, the constant reminder to look up seemed unnecessary; the ball rarely made it that far. However, when pitchers began slinging the ball from their windmill arms, it was quite likely that a pop fly could drop anytime. But, if I did not have the habit of looking up when it didn’t seem quite imperative, I wouldn’t haven been in the habit of looking up when much was at stake.

until we go looking for him. To the contrary, our enemy is out looking for us; he’s roaming around searching for whom he can destroy, and our children are common targets. Genesis 3:1 tells us he is shrewd, cunning, crafty, clever, and subtle. He is intent on our demise, and sees when we’re not watching. However, we don’t have to just engage from the defense: always blocking the attack that’s already upon us, waging in a battle that’s already on our turf, and fighting just to not lose ground. We can benefit from a life lived on the offense side: looking around for what may come, approaching impending traps and snares that threaten our children, and moving forward in taking our God-given ground of victory. “Keep your head up, your eyes straight ahead, and your focus fixed on what is in front of you”(Proverbs 4:25). “I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-20).

20 // October 2018

“The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in His Temple. For He will conceal me there when troubles come; He will hide me in His sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me” (Psalm 27:4-6).

About The Author

Parenting is pressuring. We adopt the motto, “Put your head down and work hard.” Work hard to keep up. Work hard to afford what you’re keeping up with. However, long enough in the position of looking downward and plowing forward, we tend to get stuck there, and this has dire consequences when we have been set as watchmen over our children. On the field, casting my gaze downward left me quite vulnerable. However, as a parent, casting my gaze to the ground leaves my children very exposed. “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Our enemy is no respecter of persons. He won’t pass us by because our intentions are good or because we go to church and take our children. He doesn’t wait

f you were given the choice between a gravel and a diamond, which would you choose? Would you need to sleep on it? Would you need to phone your five closet friends? Would you need to spend countless hours doing research on which of the two would be the wiser? I'm sure that by the time you got finished reading my opening paragraph, then you knew exactly what you would do. You were probably wondering how in the world anyone would come up with such a crazy choice. It's really a no-brainer. You didn't even have to think about this for five seconds without knowing just which of the two you would choose. A gravel has little value or worth, but a diamond has great value and worth. A gravel is meant to use for outside purposes, but a diamond is meant to be treasured, protected, and cared for. No one wants to buy gravel jewelry, but everyone wants to buy diamond jewelry. A gravel can be bought for a dime a dozen, but diamonds are priceless. When was the last time that you saw a crown made out of gravels? It just ain't happening! Did you know that you are making this exact same choice every day? You are choosing between gravels and diamonds every day that you live. Now you aren't choosing between a literal gravel and a literal diamond, but you are deciding between the two with the choices that you make each and every day. We don't think about our choices in this light, but this is exactly what we're doing.

22 // October 2018

So many times we trade a beautiful diamond for a worthless gravel with the choices that we make. We may look at the gravel and see potential there, but no matter how much we look at that gravel, it's always going to be a worthless stone, unlike the diamond which has great worth. So you're going to choose something that's only good for throwing outside on the ground over something that's meant to be guarded and handled with the utmost care? How did that even become a choice? I'm not sure how, but we trade the gravel for the diamond every day without ever giving it a second thought. That's so sad! I want to encourage you to think about every decision that you make with great wisdom. Don't throw away things that are valuable and of great worth all because it's the easiest choice to make. Think it through so that you end up with the diamond and not a measly gravel that no one even wants or cares about. Our flesh wants the gravel, but our spirit desires the diamond. Choose the diamond every time! So today, which will you choose, the gravel or the diamond? The choice is up to you, but you know what you need to do. Don't waste another minute on that worthless gravel. Go for the priceless diamond every time! You'll be so glad you did! About The Author

Plenty of equipment and everything is clean. I am scared when the secret gets out about this place because right now I have not observed it to be busy at all. I use this gym on the weekend and then go to another gym closer to my house during the week so I don’t see a lot of staff. The staff I have come in contact with have been really nice and helpful. Their trainers seem to be knowledgeable and they have a large variety of classes. Not that I would ever workout at 3 AM but it is nice to know I have the option so I also appreciate the 24/7 access. In 1987, we built a new apple house complete with a bakery. In 1996, a new strain of the Gala apple was discovered in our orchard. We named this new strain the “Caitlin Gala after my daughter. being able to help serve our community through this. The community has come to know and love our apples and they are a part of people’s fall experience. Our children, Caitlin and Charlie have always been around the apple orchard. They have grown up through many seasons, seeing each step it takes to grow and care for the orchard. Since finishing school, our children are planning to become more active in the day to day operation of the business. They are looking forward to being part of the team that cares for the orchards they grew up around. At Apple Valley Orchard we have a wonderful staff who helps us create a family friendly atmosphere at the store. It is because of them that those who visit us control, and better support for the trees. The trellis system is a good investment into the property and life of the trees. One of our favorite fall activities are the schools that come to visit. We host school trips daily from early September through late October. The school groups cycle through four stations. They go on the trailer ride, they learn how we take care of our trees, they hear the Johnny Appleseed story, and they visit our packing house and cider room. At the end of the tour, we

feel welcome and want to return each season. Our season runs from July through October and each month has a different set of apples to harvest. The list of all of our apples and when they normally ripen is on our website (applevalleyorchard.com), but I recommend giving us a call ahead of time to see what we have in stock. The apples are harvested as they ripen, so depending on what time you come in August, the Caitlin Galas might still be ripening or may have already been harvested.

We also offer wagon rides on the weekends at 2:00PM and again at 4:00PM throughout September and October (except the third weekend in October due to the Apple Festival). Our wagon rides are twenty minute trailer rides through the orchard. Tickets are only $1.50 at the front desk and kids under three are free. We participate in the Cleveland Apple Festival each year during the third weekend in October. This year the Cleveland Apple Festival is October 20 - 21, 2018 and it held in historic downtown Cleveland. The Cleveland Apple Festival is a 501(c)(3) public charity that donates all net proceeds to other non-profit organizations in the Cleveland, Tennessee, area. During the holidays, we help several local churches by donating apples for their food baskets. They always appreciate the fresh and local produce and we love

Deserts to Create Leaders uring my trip out west last summer, it was my first time seeing the desert. I was struck by the beauty of the desert, but I also couldn’t help but think of the heat and barrenness of it. I was looking at life and death, both forming a beautiful scene. I started thinking about the process of becoming a leader. If leaders are to become great, they must go through the desert. Becoming a leader that leaves a legacy takes time, sacrifice, determination, endurance, courage, and character. These are all things the “desert” can teach us. As you begin to pursue God’s calling on your life, you will find out that resources are scarce. There will be few who will be willing to walk that hard path with you. In the desert, you find out who your real friends are. The desert also refines our vision. In the desert, no one can hear us. It is just us and the Father. No one is there to give us attention but Him. We are unable to hide from Him. What is in our hearts is brought to light. We are then forced to wrestle with questions and past hurts that have long been buried beneath the surface. In the dryness of the desert, we learn to survive on only what is necessary. As we answer those tough questions, the things of this life that don’t matter as much fade away. This is the “death” that is experienced in the desert. The little boy/girl dies; from the ashes rises the man/woman. In the end, we gain character and thick skin. The past five years of my life were like the “desert.” To stick to His calling, I had to give up relationships and experience many betrayals. I have had many nights with no sleep and many tears, but God was with me. He took me into the desert as a boy and sent me out as a man. We often forget that the Spirit was the one who lead Jesus into the wilderness to be tested (Matthew 4:1). In the desert, I realized whose opinions mattered and whose did not. I lost myself, but found myself. I better understood what Christ meant when He said, “Whoever

30 // October 2018

seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it” (Luke 17:33). Looking out in the desert, I was beholding the beauty of what God was doing in me through life and death. The boy had to die for the man to come out. If you are reading this and find yourself in a desert, take heart. He sees you, He knows you, and He is birthing something in you greater than you or I could ever imagine.

To sum up, God uses the desert to give us: • Dependence on Him • Identity • Endurance • Strength • Character • Vision • Purpose • Genuine Friendships • Courage About The Author

y wife and I wanted to introduce ourselves and Biblestudycompany.com to you. Ask yourself this question: “Am I a disciple of Jesus Christ?” If you answer; “Well of course Ric, I have known the Lord for several years and or I grew up in a Christian home.” Sorry, but that doesn’t make you a disciple of the word of God. We were on the “hamster wheel” of Christianity, attending church, buying the latest book, or chasing the next “move of God”. We drifted away from our Savior and each other. Why? Because we weren’t studying

the word of God ourselves, but instead we expected to be “fed” by someone. Scripture is poignant about our personal study of God’s word. 1 John 2:26-27 says, “These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him” (NASB). As a couple, my wife and I started studying scripture together and separately. We call ourselves “pew-sitters”. Who were the disciples? People like us. Our mission is to go from pew-sitter to disciple.

32 // October 2018

As Christians with many ups and downs over the years, we almost lost our marriage. Today our marriage is healthy, strong, and we are walking in “one flesh”. Yes, this is a real thing. But what changed for us? Our approach to the Bible changed. We no longer study Scripture for knowledge ‘about’ God, but with asking “How do we respond to You?” The truth that God is our creator and that He made each of us for a purpose grew. As we became serious about handling His Word correctly, He gave us more “mind openers” (Luke 24:44-46). Our goal now is to live a praiseworthy life to God, His agenda not ours. This is being a disciple of Jesus Christ (Matthew 12:47-50). We started in Exodus. When the children of Israel were attacked, we were strangely attacked! We asked God tough questions that we had trouble grasping. He answered! Our “flesh” resisted studying (Gal 5:15). We both felt awkward. Praying at the table? No problem! Studying Scripture? Hard! But God gave us the grace to push forward. The disciples had an excellent teacher and we do, too. He is called the word of God! The presence of the Lord and scripture invade our lives! Our prayers were aligning with His will and they started to get answered! God brought people into our lives that needed Him. What an adventure! Nothing in our prior Christian walk has matched this depth of joy. We even started a podcast to discuss these items. We are looking to fellowship with people who want to live a praiseworthy life to God. If you are one of those, give us a shout.

Next, let's have a look at physical signs that may indicate your

taken care of as they grow older. But how can you tell

senior loved one might need extra help.

when a senior you love needs extra help if they don’t ask for it? This generation of elders is known for being fiercely

independent. So it’s important to remember they might be reluctant to admit they need a little extra help. Like many of us, seniors want to remain as independent as they can for as long as possible. That’s why you probably shouldn’t wait for an older loved one to ask for help, especially if they think it might require moving from the home they’ve lived in for years.

● A persistently disheveled appearance might suggest a senior is experiencing physical or emotional difficulties ● Frequent, unexplained bruises or scrapes on your senior loved one's body can be a strong indicator of physical struggles, especially falls ● Unintended weight loss or weight gain might be a sign of nutrition problems, physical illness, or depression Cognitive and Emotional Signs Then there are warning signs that the problems might stem from a decline in cognition or emotional wellness, such as: ● Persistent forgetfulness can be a sign of dementia, especially if the senior has trouble remembering important appointments, names, and social activities. ● Confusion and/or difficulty keeping track of time are both warning signs of cognitive decline. ● Consistent agitation and frequent mood changes are often symptoms of deteriorating mental or emotional health. ● Be especially wary if the agitation or mood swings seem to worsen as it grows later in the day. This may be evidence of something called Sundowner’s Syndrome. Sundowners is common among people with Alzheimer's disease. ● Marked or sudden changes in their daily routine,

There are almost always telltale signs that a senior is in need of help. Here are a few warning signs to be on the lookout for if you’re wondering how well your senior loved one is managing. Environmental Signs a Senior Needs Support We'll start with a few signs to watch for in your senior loved one's environment that might indicate they are struggling. Begin by taking a good, honest look around their house and yard when you visit. If you notice some of the following, it might be time to consider a little assistance. ● A messy house, including dirty dishes, clutter, overflowing trash and an overall inattention to cleanliness ● Frequent, unpleasant odors in the home – these can be a sign of emotional, physical, or cognitive decline ● The exterior of the house and/or the yard seem to be in a state of disrepair ● Scratches or holes in the walls, which can indicate mobility problems

including sleep problems or withdrawing from favorite hobbies and social groups can all be signals that something is awry. What to Do if Your Senior Loved One Needs Help We know you're devoted to your senior loved ones and want to do what's best for them. You wouldn't be here seeking this type of information if you didn't. The best approach is to remain calm but begin to take action. Use a calendar to document your concerns and the dates on which they occurred. It will help you begin to spot trends. This is also good information to share with your senior loved one’s physician when you call to schedule an appointment for your family member. And, yes, scheduling a wellness visit with their primary care physician is important if you suspect a problem with an older loved one. About The Author

Chicken Potpie

“T

by Deana Thompson

o everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Whether it is the trees, the animals, your family, your job, or your spiritual life, everything goes through seasons. Solomon, however, does not tell us to compare the different seasons—which one is better. He is merely stating a fact of life; there is a time for everything. Sometimes we get caught up in comparing the seasons. Fall is better than spring, or our family life was better when the children were little, or God used me so much more 20 years ago. Your life right now may seem like a potpie: a boiling mixture of everything insulated (or isolated) under a blanket of crust. Seasons will come and go at their appointed time; you cannot rush them or change them. Whatever season you are in spiritually or relationally, know that it will change. It may not change through your force or when you want it to, but it will change according to God’s timetable—just as autumn faithfully follows summer around the same time every year.

Ingredients

• ½ c. chopped onion • ½ c. chopped fresh mushrooms • ¼ c. unsalted butter • ½ c. freshly-milled soft white wheat flour, or 1/3 c. all-purpose flour • 2 c. chicken broth • ¾ c. milk • ½ tsp. salt • ½ tsp. sage • 1/8 tsp. pepper • 15-oz. can mixed vegetables, drained • 3 c. diced cooked chicken • ¼ c. snipped fresh parsley, or 2 Tbsp. dried parsley • 2-oz. jar chopped pimiento • 2 ¼ c. freshly-milled soft white wheat flour, or 2 c. all-purpose flour • 4 Tbsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. cream of tartar • ¼ tsp. salt • 1/8 tsp. baking soda • ½ c. unsalted butter, softened • 2/3 c. buttermilk

Directions

42 // October 2018

1. In a large saucepan, cook onion and mushrooms in the ¼ c. butter over medium heat until tender. Stir in the ½ c. flour. 2. Whisk in the chicken broth and milk until smooth. Add the ½ tsp. salt, sage, and pepper. Cook over medium heat until thickened and bubbly, stirring often. 3. Stir in the mixed vegetables, chicken, parsley, and pimiento. Heat until bubbly. 4. While the chicken mixture is heating up, make the biscuit topping: a. In a medium bowl, combine the 2¼ c. flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, the ¼ tsp. salt, and baking soda. b. Using a pastry blender, cut in the ½ c. softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. c. Add the buttermilk. Stir until the dough is wet but not sticky. (Add more flour if it is too wet; add more buttermilk if it is too dry and the flour is not sticking together). 5. Pour the chicken mixture into an 8x12 baking dish. 6. Roll out, or pat out, the biscuit dough ½”- ¾” thick and into an 8x12 rectangle. Place the dough over the chicken mixture. (Or you can cut the dough into round biscuits and place them over the chicken mixture.) 7. Bake in a 450°F oven for 12-15 minutes, or until biscuits are golden brown.

Single Elegance

y beloved spake, and said…Rise up, my love…and come away” (Song of Solomon 2:10). I didn’t want to be single again, but I am, just me again. How do you walk in a phase of your life you weren’t prepared to re-enter? How do you honor God in a consequence that feels so unfair, so painful so undeserved? But here I am, years later, still single; yet in spite of the losses, disappointments, readjustments, and sense of failure, I am experiencing God’s joy, peace,

hope, ability to forgive and accept His ministry of reconciliation. The empty spaces are filled with Him and I feel free and complete and continue to be amazed at how He is transforming my life and using me in ways that He never could had I not become single again. God revealed to me just how He was using me and my painful journey back to singleness, in a recent conversation with my former pastor, as he confessed to me that he and his wife had been talking about me. I was immediately curious about the details and content of the words spoken between them. He explained how amazed he and his wife were at the courage, grace, and strength I have shown in dealing with my intense trial. He and his wife called me the epitome of Christian elegance and I was overwhelmed by their words and humbled to say the least. All I know is that God has allowed certain things

46 // October 2018

to happen in my life because He trusted me to steward well this particular trial. He wanted to work out His purpose in my life through this painful process and grow me so that He would be glorified in how I responded. I understand that what I experience here on earth is just a small sample of the ultimate spiritual warfare being played out over my life in a realm I cannot see. I feel privileged to be trusted by God to represent Him and stand as His ambassador. What is moving me forward is the knowledge that I am loved. Let me shout it out: I am loved! Everything that I have experienced is not wasted and is working together for my good and has been allowed by my beloved. He loves me too much to be solely concerned with my comfort so He has divinely ordained an alteration. He has told me that my latter will be greater than my beginning and he has told me that I will rise to new heights in Him. He has also told me to come away, and as I have spent more time with Him I have gained a new perspective which has altered my mind and responses. The definition of elegance is: style, good taste, gracefulness, refinement, class, taste, chic and sophistication. Initially I looked at this definition and could not see any aspects of myself in the description but I realize that all of us who have chosen to become new creatures in Christ will display Christian graces which in essence are the Fruits of the Spirit! I am standing on the strength of Jesus Christ and by his power I am able to stand in silent strength and confidence; I can stand equipped with grace under pressure, I can let go and forgive without a thought of revenge and I can look at all that is reality as temporary, knowing that what I can’t see is eternal. I am smiling as I write because I am now content in this phase of my journey. My hope and expectation is in God. I want what He wants for me! He is my companion and takes great care of me! May we all strive to be what God intended us to be! About The Author

Faith

ow should we then live when we do not hear or see God? The story of Job raises many questions for us. Job himself asked many questions, even questioning God. He says in 42:4-5a, “I will question you [God], and you will make it known to me. [For] I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear . . .” Job waited until 38:1 for the Lord to speak; 38 chapters of silence. He must wait 4 more chapters, however, to see God. Job 42:5b says, “But now my eye sees you.” Following the destruction of all Job had, God remained

silent and invisible, but Job called out to the invisible God and pierced the deafening silence by falling to the ground and crying out praises: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). How should we then live when we do not hear or see God? While in captivity in Babylon the people of Israel’s predicament resembled Job’s. God, who was supposed to be so near, didn’t seem close at all. Although the

50 // October 2018

voice of God was heard through the prophet Jeremiah, God did not seem present. How could God be present in such tragedy? Yet, in the seeming absence of God, the Lord speaks these words: “Sing aloud with gladness . . . I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame . . . with pleas of mercy I will lead them . . . for I am a father to Israel” (Jer 31:7-9). In the middle of the suffering, pain, and longing to see the Lord do something, God calls the Israelites to offer praise. How should we then live when we do not hear or see God? Job and Israel’s lack of sight brings to mind a story from the Gospel of Mark chapter 10. Here we have another character who cannot see God, in fact, he cannot see anything, for he is a blind beggar name Bartimaeus. Although this man cannot see, he has found himself ever so close to Jesus, God made flesh! If only he could see! Bartimaeus does the only thing he can do, he pleads: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mk 10:47). To the crowd’s surprise, Jesus calls the blind man over to him. Take heart, the naysayers now say, for the Lord made flesh is calling you. Casting off his spirit of heaviness to receive a garment of praise, Bartimaeus rushes over to Jesus. I can see him blindly reaching out into the darkness and running—not knowing nor caring what might stand between himself and Jesus. He runs with hands outstretched, believing yet without seeing that his savior, his healer, his Lord awaits him. It is his faith that restores his sight. How should we then live when we do not hear or see God?

F - Forgive and forget O - Obedience R - Reasonable and respectful G - Guiltless I - Involvement V - Vent E - Embrace N - Nurture E - Encourage S - Severance S - Sincerity All of the above elements play an important role in the forgiveness process. Please do yourself and everyone around you a paramount favor by forgiving early. Do not allow any issue to be harbored or begin to fester within you. We allow so much pain and suffering to be inflicted upon our lives and those around us by harboring hurt feelings within. First, we need to forgive and forget the issue. Life is too precious to lose by not forgiving the offender or forgiving yourself for allowing it to happen. It's even more difficult to forgive yourself if you have blame to bear. Harboring unforgiveness is being disobedient to the word of God. Obedience is so much better than sacrificing your peace and contentment in life. If we cannot forgive, how then can our heavenly father forgive us for our transgressions? So many times when we've been injured in a relationship, we fail to be reasonable in solving the situation. God has created each of us with feelings and opinions and each one is just as important as our neighbors. Be reasonable and respectful to yourself and your offender. Oh my, the common house fly will confirm the fact that honey draws many times more flies than vinegar. Now to the art of passing the buck which is our favorite reaction when we are not able to accept our responsibility in the situation, admit that we are guilty. I'm guilty and embarrassed of my choice of reactive behavior. Do not hesitate to get rid of this terrible thing called guilt and

become guiltless; cleansed by the washing of the blood sacrifice of God's wonderful gift, his only begotten son. Guilt will completely derail the successful process of an offender or yourself. The forgiveness process will require us to purpose changes in our lives and evaluate our involvement in activities and relationships with others. It's of worth to mention, keeping positive in our relationships is important. Positive attitudes will build up and edify you. Who needs to be torn down when it's enough of a challenge to stay positive in the midst of hard times? Forgiving others is

certainly difficult enough so why add insult to injury with negative feelings? Involve yourself in positive activities with positive people with positive attitudes toward life. Harboring thoughts and feelings of hurt is like a powder cage ready to explode at an unexpected moment. Vent your thoughts to a trustworthy friend. Your perspective of the situation will certainly change for the better. If there is no one to vent your feelings to, God's ear is always open to our every hearts cry being one of his creation. He has promised to listen to you and give you a sensible answer. If you have not vented your feelings and a temptation comes to your life's door, how much easier would it be to completely blow it than if you were at peace with yourself?
