THE REVELATION OF ABSOLUTELY

” By Pastor Mike Shreve Triumphant Living Ministry Center

Recently God impressed me with the importance of NOTHING! Yes, I mean what I’m saying. The concept of NOTHING and the word NOTHING both speak SOMETHING of great importance in the Bible—a powerful revelation that is transformational. Though there are many relevant passages, just consider the following four concerning this important though overlooked Biblical word:

1. THE CREATION PRINCIPLE—In the beginning, “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep” (Gen. 1:2). Nothing existed except the vacuum of absolute emptiness. Then God spoke. Out of nothing (ex nihilo) He created a universe so vast it defies measurement and so beautiful it defies description.

Application: In like manner, at a certain time our lives and our souls were “without form and void,” then God spoke into the nothingness of our lives and created an inheritance so immeasurable and a destiny so beautiful that both defy description (“eye has not seen, nor ear heard”). Amazingly, though, we must recognize our nothingness in Adam before we can receive this amazing transfer. Galatians 6:3 reveals that without Christ we are nothing and John 15:5 states that without Him we can do nothing (of any eternal value). But once God speaks into our lives and we receive His Word, our potential is awakened and awe-inspiring possibilities are manifested, even to the point of sharing the reigns of the universe in the New Creation to come (paupers becoming kings).

2. THE PRAYER PRINCIPLE—King Asa was faced with a dilemma. The million-man Ethiopian army was marching on Jerusalem and the king of Judah only had 300,000 men to resist the invasion. The odds were over 3 to 1 in favor of Ethiopia winning. But then God’s anointed and righteous king turned his gaze toward heaven. As he prayed, he did not magnify the bigness of the problem (a mistake we make all too often). Instead, he magnified the greatness of God with the power-filled statement, “Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power…” (2 Chr. 14:11) He got his answer. God struck down the opposition and the enemy fled.

Application: If we want a miracle of this proportion, maybe we should pray the same way. Dare to say, “God, it is nothing for You to help me; it is nothing for You to heal me. It is nothing for You to deliver and prosper me. It requires no strain on Your part, Lord. You can effortlessly stretch forth Your hand and perform the miracle.” If you consistently make confessions like this, get ready for your breakthrough!

6

September 2013

3. THE SUSPENSION PRINCIPLE—Even in his great trial Job dared to say of God, “Sheol is naked before Him and Destruction has no covering. He stretches out the north over empty space: He hangs the earth on noth-

ing.” (Job 26:6-7) Think of that! God “hangs the earth on nothing.” Yet the earth weighs 6.6 sextillion pounds (that’s 6,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 pounds—6.6 times a thousand, times a million, times a million, times a million pounds). Yet there are no supporting wires or invisible pillars. This huge ball of matter is just suspended in space. What could be keeping it in its place? Hebrews 1:3 answers that question indicating that God upholds “all things by the Word of His power.”

Application: In like manner when we feel weak, when we feel vulnerable, when we feel incapable, when there’s nothing visible or tangible effectively upholding us (our friends, our finances, our circumstances, etc.) we can still hang our past, present and future on the promises of God’s Word. Though this supernatural ‘support system’ is invisible to the natural eye, it still hold us up, for “underneath are the everlasting arms.” (Dt. 33:27)

4. THE MIRACLE PRINCIPLE—After announcing the miraculous conception of the Son of God, the angel Gabriel told Mary, “Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age: and this now the sixth month for her who was called barren. FOR WITH GOD NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE!” (Lk. 1:36-37) Nothing is too difficult for the Creator of heaven and earth to accomplish. We have to grip that with a conscious awareness! But another scripture lifts us to an even higher level of faith. In Matthew 17:20 Jesus challenges His disciples, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move and NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU!” The first scripture is all about having faith in God’s Word (which is easy for most believers); the second scripture is all about having faith in our own words, when they are in harmony with God’s Word (a prayer practice which is more challenging for some believers to implement).

Application: If we dare to speak the word of faith in times of opposition and tribulation, if we dare to defy our circumstances and our own negative emotions and logic driven-mind, we can move the immovable and change the unchangeable. Purge your conversation of negatives and instead speak positive confessions and declarations of faith. Don’t tell God how big your mountains are; tell your mountains how big your God is. Try it consistently for a season and see the difference! Expect the windows of heaven to open.

It’s OK to Be Afraid John 20: 19-23 Billy, Scott, & Adam were walking home from a football game. They where tired, and they wanted to go home and have something to eat. “I know a short cut,” said Scott. “ Let’s go this way.” He jumped across a ditch and ran toward a tall fence. “There’s a big fence that way,” said Billy. “We’ve got to go around it.” “I know where there’s a hole under the fence,” said Scott. “ We can crawl through it.”

“Well, my dad tells me not to be scared,” said Scott. “I think it’s dumb not to be scared of some things,” said Adam. “You’re a sissy,” said Scott. “I’m not scared of anything.” “Well, I’m scared to run out on the street when there are lots of cars,” said Adam. “And I’m scared of big dogs that bite. And I’m scared of strangers who ask me to ride in their cars.” “I’m scared of those things too,” said Billy. “Do you think I’m a sissy?”

“Look at the sign,” said Adam. “No,” said Scott. “Sissies are scared of everything.”

“it says: ‘KEEP OUT - HIGH VOLTAGE.’”

“I’m not scared of everything,” said Adam. “I know Jesus is with me, so I’m not afraid of the dark, and I’m now scared to be alone. And I’m not scared to go on roller coasters.”

“What’s voltage?” asked Billy. “That’s electricity,” said Adam “Come on!” said Scott. “the hole is over here.”

HIGH VOLTAGE

“I’m hungry,” said Billy. “Let’s go home one way or the other.”

“I’m not going that way,” said Adam. “You’re chicken!” said Scott. “Only sissies get scared.” “Yeah, I’m scared of electricity,” said Adam. “And my dad says there’s nothing wrong with being scared.”

Some Questions 1. What are some things you should be scared of? 2. What are some things you should not be scared of?

8

September 2013

3. Should you do something dangerous just to prove you are not afraid?

“OK, we’ll go your way,” said Scott. “But I’m not scared to jump that ditch.” The three boys jumped back over the ditch and ran home.

A Prayer Thank you, God, for protecting us from danger. Guide us so we will not do dangerous things. In Jesus name. Amen.

G ò0 dNews on Money Matters

Dorian Gray Syndrome By Andrew Lee scar Wilde’s novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, published in 1890, is a delightfully creepy book about a young man who is granted his wish to always remain youthful and attractive. Meanwhile, all of his sins and transgressions are transferred instead onto a painted portrait of the young man himself—a portrait that he keeps hidden away in a locked room of his house. The portrait ages and grows more hideous with each passing year, while Dorian retains his handsome features and robust physical health many years later. (I won’t tell you how the novel ends, in case you decide to read it for yourself; I recommend it highly). Since I’m an English professor, I suppose it’s inevitable that I would turn to literary analogies in discussing financial matters. At first glance, Wilde’s novel might appear to have little to do with the topic of personal finance. But I’d like to examine what I call the “Dorian Gray Syndrome” of investing. This occurs when we deny (or refuse to admit) our own aging process and continue to make investment decisions based on our life circumstances when we were 20-something or in our 30’s, though in reality we might be much older than that, and our life circumstances might have changed considerably. But we refuse to admit this to ourselves, and instead we make unwise decisions due to our refusal to face our own aging and our own mortality. One concrete example of the “Dorian Gray Syndrome” is this stark fact: 70% of all married couples do not have a Last Will and Testament in place. They haven’t even taken the time to think about their Will, much less actually write it out and September 2013

O

10

have it legally notarized and deposited in a safe deposit box or with an attorney. This is especially important if a couple has children under the age of eighteen, as guardians need to be appointed for the children in the event of both parents’ deaths. Many studies have shown that the number one reason people don’t make a Will isn’t because they are simply procrastinators or careless, but most often it is because we’re all uncomfortable admitting the simple fact that we are closer to death with every passing moment. We fool ourselves into thinking that if just don’t prepare for death by making a Will, we are somehow postponing our mortality indefinitely. This is a huge mistake. If you don’t have a legal Will in place yet, do it TODAY. Many websites offer valid, legal Will forms online for download, and it’s very inexpensive. Another example of the “Dorian Gray Syndrome” concerns our investment risks. When we’re in our 20’s and 30’s, even 40’s, it’s perfectly acceptable (even wise, in my opinion) to put the majority of our retirement funds into stocks and stock index funds. But as we move into our 50’s, it’s probably prudent to shift some of our retirement funds into less risky investments, such as bonds, bond funds, Treasury bills, etc. If we refuse to acknowledge our aging process, we might find out, years later, that we never adjusted our investment strategy as we aged, and thus we took on risk that was disproportionate to our life circumstances. I’m reminded of the quip by comedian and filmmaker Woody Allen: “I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it by not dying.” That’s funny, but not when it comes to our money decisions.

“We sure do know how to have fun!” By David Gray

I

t was another brilliantly crafted moment of sarcasm from one of the Gray boys that will be recounted anytime hiking lore is told. Moments earlier the only thing that could be heard was the whipping wind, the constant patter of rain, and the chattering of teeth as the four of us huddled in a two-man tent. The tent had been thrown together as quickly as possible on about a 25 degree incline that caused two inches of ice cold water to pool on one side of the tent – right where my sleeping bag lay. We had taken a beautiful two-day hike into the wilderness and one day to recuperate and fish a crystal clear mountain lake. However, my dad, my two older brothers and I crawled out of our tents the next morning to discover a deceitful fog had settled into the valley and a cold drizzle through the night had soaked the landscape - and all of our gear. The overcast sky broadcast its intentions for the day. We had a choice to make at this point. We could hike back the same way we came in or stick with our original plan to hike up and over Flat Top Mountain. Someone proclaimed, “I think we can hike ABOVE the weather.” Not one of our best ideas. So, up we went. Lizard head Trail across Flat Top Mountain in the Wind River Range ascends to about 11,200 feet. This particular mountain got its name because the top of it is … flat. It’s flat for so long that when you hike it you can forget you are on top of a mountain. The temperatures quickly dropped to the low thirties. The gusts of wind had no obstacles to hinder them from cutting into our faces because we were above the tree line. Freezing cold rain and sleet were our faithful companions the entire day. The four of us exchanged our usual chatter for silence as we trudged along the trail. Seven hours later - I don’t know if I was in a determined zone or a hypothermic daze. My head was pointed downward to avoid the sting of the sleet as I watched my feet slosh through the water covered trail. I was feeling extremely sleepy, forcing my eyes to stay open as I marched along. Suddenly I felt someone tug on my jacket, pulling me off the trail. The others had decided we had gone far enough. We quickly set up a tent behind a huge boulder to shield us from the neverending storm. My hands were so cold that they felt like nubs at the ends of my arms. No matter how hard I tried I could not move my fingers and I couldn’t pull off my gear. My oldest brother saw my predicament and stepped over to help, though he was on the verge of hypothermia himself. He had to peel my jacket off for me as I stood there a little like a frozen mannequin. My own spontaneous, uncontrollable tears surprised me. Prior to that moment I didn’t realize how bad our situation was. For the next sixteen hours we huddled together in that small tent attempting to get warm and escape the mountain’s antics. It was then that my brother uttered those now famous words, “We sure do know how to have fun!”

It was also in this moment that I realized the power of these words: “It’s better to have a partner than go it alone. If one falls down, the other helps. Two in a bed warm each other. Alone, you shiver all night. September By yourself you’re unprotected.

12 2013

With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped” (Eccl. 4:9-12 ) I would have continued on that path headed for disaster if my brother had not stopped me. I was in a zone, determined to keep marching. I didn’t realize how much trouble I was in. The problem with a man who doesn’t think he needs anyone else is he usually doesn’t know when he’s headed for trouble. God never intended for us to go through this life alone. He never intended for us to face the hardships, difficulties and circumstances of life by ourselves. For the first time in the history of the universe, God declared something was “not good” – when He saw Adam alone. God knows that without the companionship, strength, and encouragement of others we will be defeated. My Dad said, “Looking back I'm glad we had that experience together. It makes you a stronger person.” The challenge is that men idolize independence. Men want to project an image of strength. We want others to think we have everything under control; that we are always cool, calm and collected. Asking for help, or even advice, is perceived as an admission of weakness - and that is the last thing we want to project. But, this is exactly the position God wants to bring us to. Only when we recognize and admit our weaknesses can we understand our desperate dependence on God. Our deficiencies prove our need for the body of Christ. The good news, men, is that God already knows you don’t have it all together. He is not surprised. Instead, He declares, “My strength is made perfect in your weakness!” When you recognize this truth, there can only be one conclusion: “So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me” (2 Cor 12:9 NLT).

I am a Mom-ster by Kristi Schalk “Your kids don’t remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.” -Jim Henson

I

n preparation for my new teaching position at a local elementary school, I was recently reading a professional education book. In it, I stumbled across a behavior management strategy that discussed the importance of smiling and using “please” & “thank you” so students don’t feel threatened by correction. The book argued that the use of such kindness would help me obtain the desired response in students’ behavior. To be honest, I was QUITE skeptical. I am a mom. Why would I approach a misbehaving child with a smile? Nonetheless, I thought I would test this theory on my own children at bedtime. My eight year old son, Jake, is fast. He can ask questions faster than I can answer, disappear out of the house to play with friends in the blink of an eye, and change his clothes at the speed of light. But at bedtime the child is slow as molasses. (Don’t tell anyone I said this, but he gets it from his father’s side of the family. ) My six year old daughter, Abby, who is very sly and quick-witted, likes to engage us in a never-ending story at bedtime that we never see coming. My other six year old daughter, Alli, (yep, twins!) is the funniest person on earth. She especially thinks this is true. I think you see our bedtime dilemmas. So, I walked into the at room at bedtime with a warm smile on my face. While the approach was quite effective, I was met with extreme confusion by my children. Looks of bewilderment filled their faces. Then the questions started… Why are you so happy? Why do you keep smiling? Do you have a secret? September Seriously, Mommy, why are you so happy?

18 2013

Did you just have a really good day? You are NEVER this happy at the end of the day! You are being so super nice to us! At first, I found this to be kind of funny, as did my husband. But as I began to reflect, I realized how awful I must seem to my children. I saw myself through their eyes, and I saw a “Momster!” I didn’t like her at all. Then my own questions began… Why am I not happy at the end of the day? (I get to sleep in a loving home with a wonderful family. I am truly blessed!) Why am I so much kinder to strangers than I am to my kids? Why do I try everything in the world to make students in my classroom feel safe and loved, but don’t always show that same respect to my own children? I didn’t have answers to any of these questions. I went to bed in tears feeling like the worst mother in the world. I spoke to many of my mom friends about this and most of them said the same thing: ”We’re moms. We get tired and frustrated.” Okay, so we all sometimes treat our children as second class citizens, but does that make it okay? Not to me. Right then I made a vow to myself. I would kill my Momster—or at least keep it at bay. I would work to keep my voice level down, to make sure my children saw a smile on my face more often than a frown, and to ensure they know that this is a safe, loving home where they can feel secure. I think many of us strive to be that Proverbs 31 woman at church, at work, in public, and with our husbands (well, maybe with our husbands). But somehow, over the course of this thing we call “motherhood” we easily forget verse 28 of that Proverbs chapter: “Her children rise and call her blessed.” Would your children make special effort to arise and speak fondly of you? Last week, I am not sure that mine would have. It is my prayer that now, and forevermore, they will.

The many faces of hospice care Maybe when you think of hospice care, you think of elderly patients. You may not realize that Hospice of Chattanooga also provides end-of-life care to people of all ages, right here in our community. Like a young mother with an aggressive form of breast cancer, a teen who has had a devastating traffic accident, or a premature baby clinging to life.

These are also the faces of hospice care. Hospice of Chattanooga provides medical, emotional and spiritual support to these patients and their families, helping them make the most of the time they have together. Please be a part of our mission. Your donation will ensure that no one who needs our care is ever turned away. Please mail your check to The Hospice of Chattanooga Foundation at the address to the right, or make a donation online at www.hospiceofchattanooga.org.

G ò0 dNews for Parents Raising Entrepreneurs By Craig Thompson

ecently I had the opportunity to take my three oldest children to a home business conference a few hours away. It was similar to other conferences I've been to. There were motivational speakers. There were speakers who've made millions using the market power of the Internet. There were people who have been working a home business for just a couple of years and who have begun to see success. And there were the speakers who have tried numerous business ventures and seen many of them blossom. "Why take a sixteen year old to an event like that?" you may wonder. Better yet, why take a nine year old to such an event? It cost money to attend, and the gas, food and hotel weren't included in the price. Why, indeed? It's part of a vision that I have for my children, and that is for them to be thinking about what type of business each of them would like to own as they get older. Did you catch that not so subtle shift? What type of business they WOULD LIKE TO OWN. If you went through public school like I did, you generally had the idea drilled in you that you were learning the three Rs and a bucket load of facts so that you might be able to -- go to college. And if you were successful in college, you were hoping to "get a good job." How many of us went through twelve years of compulsory education followed by four, six or eight years of higher education only to find out that "getting a good job" was a bit like a crapshoot. The real world demanded that we have real skills -- or be willing to take much less pay in order to be trained on the job. In retrospect, the skills I learned which proved helpful to me in

various jobs were typing (high school), photography the ability ph (self ( lf ttaught), ht) th bilit to write (self taught with extra hammering by Judy Ragon), and computer skills (also self taught). Sorry to all the teachers who invested their time in me, but physics hasn't paid off for me. Neither has most of my higher math. I'm sure that Shakespeare is handy in a pinch if you're trying out for Romeo and Juliet, but it hasn't paid off in the real world, either. Without going through my entire academic career or yours, I suspect that many of us could look at the sum total of our educational experience and shake the bag real hard only to find that just a handful of courses and teachers actually prepared us for the job market. And then I turned out to be a business owner. That's too long of a story for here, but the short version is that I was terrified of the idea any time I thought of it. And, I'd have to say that God snookered me into it without me realizing it at first. Now, after having owned a small business for over a decade, I see the positive side of it. I don't want my children to grow up thinking, "I have to get a job working for someone else." I want them to find what they love to do and are gifted to do and develop that into a business which helps others and meets their own financial needs. How about you? What kind of worker are you raising? If you're in the rat race, do you love it so much that you want your children to duplicate your work history? If not, here are some ideas for changing course. * Look at your child's interests and try to determine which of them might be a marketable skill. When you determine what one or two of these skills might be, LOOK FOR SPECIALIZED TRAINING for your child. People spend over $100,000 on a college degree which may not get them anything. If your child likes dancing, pay for training. They might leverage that to teach dancing or own their own studio one day. If your child is gifted in design, pay for an art course and invest the money for good graphic arts software. * Don't discourage your child from sports, but be realistic. Help your child to face the facts early on. Less than 1% of high school athletes ever make it to the pros. In fact, for football and basketball, it's more like .08% and .03% who turn pro! So unless your child happens to be the 1 in 11,000, he's more likely to be looking for work than signing autographs in the future. * Seek mentors for your child. There may be someone in your town who does what your child loves to do. There may be someone an hour or two away. Ask if that person will spend time teaching your child a trade. Does anyone else here remember reading about how apprenticeships were a way of life a couple hundred years ago? * Get a copy of The Underground History of American Education by John Taylor Gatto and read it. This book will astound you with stories of America's early leaders and how young they were when they began owning serious businesses. You can search on the Internet for that title plus the letters "pdf " to find numerous sites with a free download of the book or read it online at his site.

In an economic climate where businesses are cutting hours to stave off insurance requirements, do you really want your child to have to compete for a slot working for the man? Or do you want your child to run her own business and have more of a buffer against the tides? Act according to your goal for your children.

Back Pain Gone!

Decompression machine helps patients with chronic back pain

leveland- Relief may be in sight for those suffering from back pain or neck pain due to herniated or degenerative discs, joint problems, arthritis and sciatica. Dr.Bodkin is using a new machine, the DRX-9000, a breakthrough in the treatment of back pain. They are one of the first doctors in Tennessee to use this state-of-the art technology. The DRX-9000 enables the discs in the spine to be gently decompressed, relieving pressure on pain producing nerves in the low

back. Each patient’s treatment program is specific for his or her condition. Removing the pressure not only allows the discs to reposition themselves, but also to regain fluid and become healthy and pain free again. The treatment for the patient is extremely comfortable and most patients fall asleep during the session. In most cases, pain in the back, neck, and/or leg and arm pain resolves after the first few minutes of being on the machine.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies By Deana Thompson

S

chool has started once again. Bright yellow school buses. Backpacks and school supplies. Packed lunches. Sometimes packed lunches can be hard to vary—5 days a week, 36 weeks a year, one little lunch box that gets stuffed in an unrefrigerated locker. It can be so much easier to grab prepackaged food and quickly toss it in a lunch box, but easier is not always better. 1 Corinthians 6:19 asks the question, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” What goes in your body—whether from food, media or entertainment—will affect how your temple will be for the Holy Spirit. If you eat junk, your body will break down long before its time, and you will not be able to do all that God would want you to do for His Kingdom. If you watch junk or listen to junk, your mind and heart will not be clean and prepared to hear God’s still small voice and obey anything He commands you to do. Sweets is one of the things that all kids like in their lunch boxes, and it is also one of the areas that tends to get prepackaged for lunches—just reach for a snack cake and put it in the box. However, putting all that refined sugar, white flour, and hydrogenated oils (contained in most prepackaged sweets) in your children’s bodies is not going to help them and make them healthier but rather is going to harm them in many ways. Here is a way to satisfy their sweet tooth and yet be healthy at the same time: no refined sugar, whole wheat flour, butter (instead of hydrogenated margarine), rolled oats and juicy raisins. You can make a batch and freeze them, taking them out of the freezer day by day as needed. Still “premade” and convenient, yet so much better than “prepackaged.” Treat your body as the temple of the Spirit that it is!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies Yield: 40 cookies ¾ c. unsalted butter, softened 1¾ c. all-purpose flour 1 c. honey 1 egg 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. pure vanilla ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. baking soda 2 c. old-fashioned rolled oats 1 c. raisins

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. 2. In a medium bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium-high speed for 20 seconds. 3. Add half of the flour, and then the honey, egg, cinnamon, baking powder, vanilla, salt, and baking soda. Beat until thoroughly combined. 4. Beat in the remaining flour. Stir in the oats and raisins. 5. Drop by a rounded teaspoon 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet. 6 Bake for 12 minutes, or until the edges are golden. Cool cookies on a wire rack.

Variations Chocolate Nutty

With the oats, stir in 1 c. chocolate chips. With the oats, stir in ½ c. chopped walnuts or pecans.

The Gilberts on

COLLISION CENTER

FAITH, FAMILIY & BUSINESS By Bethany Ruckman

G

oodNews Christian Magazine recently l caught h up with ih the owners of Gilberts Collision Center, Jason & Laura Gilbert, to talk faith, family and business…

GCM: How many years have you been married? J&L: 18 Years GCM: How did you meet? J&L: At a restaurant in Chattanooga. Laura was the waitress Jason was the customer. GCM: Marriages tend to be about balance, usually there is a spender and a saver, maybe an OCD type and a laid back type, a squeeze the toothpaste from the bottom type and a squeeze the tooth paste from the middle type, a talker and a listener…you see where I’m going with this? How would you describe yourselves and how you balance each other out? J&L: We are similar in a lot of ways. We are both first-borns with strong wills and extrovert personalities. We were young in years and in our faith when we married and had a lot of conflict in the beginning years for certain! The Lord led us to a Christian marriage counselor, and through him, the Holy Spirit taught us how and why to respect one another. Are we always successful in that goal? No! But, the Holy Spirit is the ultimate Coach if you will listen and obey His words of wisdom. We firmly believe God is the glue in middle holding our family together!

GCM: How many children do you have and how old? What are their involvements? J&L: Jessica, seven-TEEN, is a Senior at Silverdale Baptist Academy where she is a leader in FCA. She also leads a Bible study for Freshman girls at school. She has played soccer every year she has attended SBA and is currently serving as co-captain of this year's team. She works & volunteers at East Cleveland Boys & Girls Club. She hopes to be a kindergarten teacher and is looking forward going on her first international missions trip to Central America after graduation next summer. J&L: Jacob, thir-TEEN, is in 7th grade at SBA where he plays football. He serves in the Children's ministry at our church and went on his first missions trip to YWAM this summer in Orlando,FL. Jacob LOVES Duck Dynasty but his motto would have to be "Faith, Family & Four-Wheelers". He feels called to serve and minister to victims of social injustice after college.

GCM: How is raising teenagers? Do you have any advise for those also raising teenagers or for those who will eventually have teens? J&L: Pray - for them and for you as their parent. Teach your kids to know the Word for themselves. It is their best weapon in the war waging for their eternal soul. Trust the Holy Spirit. He knows and loves your teenager more than you do. He will convict them when needed and get you involved when necessary. Don't have "the talk" once and think that's enough. It needs to be an open, honest, ongoing dialogue. Practice what you preach. Love them to pieces, show them mercy, always be available to listen & remember that their walk with Christ will look a whole lot like yours does! GCM: What family traditions are a must in your house? J&L: Dinner together. Does it happen every night? No, we live in reality. But it does happen most nights of the week, even if it's 9pm. Last year, while mentoring in a local high school, I was shocked to learn that only 1 out of the 20 students in our LifeGroup consistently sits down around a table with their family for dinner. The majority said they only have dinner with their immediate family

members once a year at Thanksgiving. You're missing out people! I wouldn't trade those no-cell-phone moments for anything :)

GCM: You have expressed your desire to reach out to teens, tell me a bit about the program you are involved with? LAURA: "Sin always makes you stay longer than you plan to stay & pay more than you want to pay." Consequences to sin are real, a definite, and can follow you through life even after you've been forgiven. I (Laura) was a troubled teen, to put it mildly. Rebellion doesn't even begin to sum up who I was B.C. I made every wrong choice in the book. As a 38-year-old adult, I now have the privilege of volunteering for a mentor program with On Point.Through LifeGroups, I encourage teens not to make the same wrong choices I did. LifeGroups meet during club time at Walker Valley, Bradley Central, Lake Forest and Ocoee Middle. LifeGroups are open to any student who wants to join. We help students realize that risky behaviors tend to cluster. We encourage them to identify and build on the positive assets in their lives, such as being a part of a sports team or youth program. We teach them how to sharpen their critical thinking skills by keeping their future in mind when making their choices today. We accomplish these goals throughout the school year through creative and fun games that teach lessons. On Thursday, September 26th, On Point will host our first banquet in Cleveland to raise support and awareness so these groups can continue. We will have several Bradley County students testify about the impact LifeGroups have had on them. Jimmy Wayne, a famous country singer, will also be present to share an amazing testimony of his own! Please contact Shannon at On Point for tickets. 899-9188 x 108.

ing Christian. A woman at my church spent so much of her time teaching me through the Word and her example of what a godly wife looked like. She always had the discerning gift of calling at "just the right time". Her example and her friendship were a constant encouragement not to give up on my walk or my marriage when things were difficult. The ladies at New Hope Crisis Pregnancy Center have also had an enormous impact on me as I have served along side of them for the past 12 years.. Surely they mimic Heaven by completely erasing denominational differences. They serve Christ with such a pure & holy love for Him - you can't help but being refreshed when you spend time at the center on Mouse Creek Rd. Their example of selfless love & mercy for the broken has impacted me for eternity. They are the arms of Christ to many in Bradley County and rarely receive recognition of their service.

Jason: My dad, Steve Gilbert, who is also my Pastor at Heritage Fellowship in McDonald. He has always exemplified selfless love by putting others first. One of the most admirable qualities that my dad consistently shows is his humility and his desire to please God over man. I am so grateful that in a society where dads are often absent, my dad taught me how to be a godly man, husband & father.

Arthur Gilbert & Steve Gilbert

Gilbert’s COLLISION CENTER

GCM: I’ve heard nothing but good things and about Gilbert Collision Center. How long have you been in business and how did Gilbert Collision Center get started? Jason: I learned what a work ethic looked like from an early age. Several of my relatives have owned small businesses in Cleveland, with the most influential being his grandfather, Arthur Gilbert at the Village Bake Shop. By watching Mr. Gilbert, I realized how, as a business owner, you could positively affect your community by the way you treat your customers and employees. I worked at two local dealerships before I felt led to open my own business. I believed a body shop could function as a team with the right direction and leadership. We opened up shop at our first location on Georgetown Rd in 2000 before God prompted us to grow and move in 2005 to our current location at 910 Star Vue Drive, behind Bradley Equipment Rentals. God has taught us so much about faith & humility & trusting in His promises. We give Him the thanks, the glory and the praise! We are nothing without Him.

GCM: I know your relationship with God is at the top of your list of priorities, who would you say has had the biggest spiritual impact/influence on you? Why? Both Jason and Laura. Laura: Mentors - people that took the time to teach a grow-

GCM: Tell us more about your home homee cchurch ho hurrcch an hu and nd what whatt are wh are re your yo involvements there? J&L: We both began a relationship with Jesus at Heritage Fellowship Church of God in McDonald 16 years ago, shortly after our daughter was born. God used parenthood to humble us and draw us to Him. How do parents try to do it without Him? Jason led a men's Bible study out of the body shop for 7 years and saw many men either find salvation, deliverance or a renewed relationship with Christ. At the same time, Laura led a women's Bible study in their home and also led the Missionettes (girls aged 8-12) at Heritage for those seven years. But recently, God has given us the opportunity to minister together for the first time. We are currently serving as the Young Adult Ministry Leaders (ages 18-29) at Heritage Fellowship. Our favorite event is taking young people to the Passion Conference, directed by Louie Giglio & Chris Tomlin, in Atlanta each January.

GCM: Do you have a particular verse or passage that you refer to often ? Laura: Romans 8:28 sums up my story. He truly turned my mess into His message & I am thrilled to glorify Him through it! Jason: Romans 12:1 How could I ever repay the Lord? I offer up all that I am to serve His purposes.

Does God care about what we eat? By Michele Reneau

I

think this is a question that many Christians overlook when making food choices. The Bible has plenty to say on the matter and I think gives clear direction through principles and precepts. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." There are a lot of ways we can honor God with our body but it can be difficult to do when we are sick, stressed, overweight or debilitated by our health. Many have chosen to spend a large portion of our free time in the doctor’s office rather than looking inward and seeking answers as to why their health has become compromised. For me, this scripture provides a clear precept. We should be honoring our body through our food choices, not seeking quick fixes; which in reality only mask the symptoms that are still there. While we are not bound morally to follow food rules of the Bible, it would be safe to say that the junk that is prevalent in the standard American diet (SAD) is contrary to God’s design for our bodies. The majority of American health issues are caused by poor nutrition, stress, lack of sleep and exercise. You can walk down the street and see that 1 in 3 Americans are obese. Further more statistics show heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer are rising at epidemic rates compared to other countries. None of the other top 10 industrialized countries are currently facing these same issues at such an alarming rate. We should be concerned for our health and the future of health of our children. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The cascade of major health issues facing Americans makes it dif-

ficult to claim this verse. You can take back your health by using the Creator’s design and His tools via the right foods so that you can live the abundant life in health and be ready and available for service. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people perish because of lack of knowledge.” Since food industrialization, we have traded the traditions and wisdom of our ancestors for the convenience of fast, cheap and easy food, whether it be in a drive-thru, packaged, boxed or canned food. And it’s killing us! We have moved away from God’s wisdom in this matter. We have accepted man’s cheap substitute and we are paying the price with our health, our lives and the lives of our children. The body is wonderfully and fearfully made. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself, therefore, can operate a long time on non-food junk. But at some point, the body reacts appropriately--the way it was designed by the Creator and the system begins to fail. The body tries to tell you that non-food doesn’t agree with you by a various onslaught of symptoms that we ignore. Headaches, migraines, bloating, gas, Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS), as well as antihistamine reactions like itchy eyes, running nose, sneezing and other digestive discomforts often warning signs where the body is trying to tell you something. We pass these off and take an over-the-counter product to suppress them instead of listening and responding to them appropriately by avoiding or removing them. There is a lot of confusing health information on what is “right” or healthy. I pray you will consult God’s Word and ask the Lord for guidance on discerning this information and for what is right for your body.

Trey McMahan

By David Thompson tereotypes are funny. When we think of a nurse, for example, we picture a white cap on their head. When a teacher is brought to mind, we immediately imagine an apple on their desk. Describe someone as having black, horn-rimmed glasses, their hair slicked off to the side, and a couple of pens in their shirt pocket, and a computer geek would be the first thing we would think of. And when a lineman in football is mentioned, we think of a mean, dirty football player spewing cuss words and trash talk, and itching for a fight. However, just as the other pictures are completely off, the stereotype of Trey McMahan, offensive lineman for Cleveland High School, is almost as far from the truth as it gets. At 6 feet 4 and 280 lb, Trey is one big dude. However, he ran a forty-yard time of 5.2, and it’s pretty obvious that this kid is something special. Before playing football, he actually took karate, and earned the title of 1st Degree Black Belt. Around the age of 12, he started playing rec-league football, and fell in love with the

28

sport. The reason he liked it was because “If I were angry from school, or if a relative got sick, I could take it out on the field. I would just hit hard, and I could cool down.” When Trey got to middle school, the football coaches at Cleveland loved him: and who wouldn’t? In seventh grade, Trey stood six feet tall, and weighed 230. That same year, he started playing with the 8th grade team. When he moved up to Cleveland High, he was battling on the line with seniors as a freshman, and holding his own against them. However, the biggest problem the coaches had with him was his attitude. “They would tell me I needed to get mean,” Trey said. “I told them, this is how I play football.” Trey is proud of his ability to keep his cool, both on and off the field. There have been numerous times where players have cussed him out, played dirty, and basically asked to get beaten up, but he just keeps his mouth shut and lets his playing do the talking, living out his faith on the

gridiron. This is something that Trey is familiar with; he grew up in a Christian environment, and learned those high values from his grandmother. Known as Trey-mac, or Big Mac, Trey acts like a big brother to all the other linemen, making sure to keep them in line and lead by example. He knows that he is a leader, and he enjoys being in that position and being able to influence the other players. According to Trey, the most important things about football are to respect your coaches and teammates, and to play the game because you love it and not for any other reasons. Despite his lofty perch on the field, though, Trey makes sure he stays as humble as possible. In fact, one of the main things that struck me during our interview together was his plain speaking and his humble, down-to-earth attitude. So where does Trey go from here? He wants to go to college-even if he doesn’t get a football scholarship-because he would be one of the first in his family to do so. If he gets the

opportunity, he wants to go to the NFL, simply because of how proud it would make his family and because he loves the game so much. He knows that God is watching over him and keeping him safe, and he knows that God put him on this earth to help his family and to have a Christ-like attitude, both in football and in regular life. When he gets old, Trey wants people to remember him, and he wants his family to be proud of the work he did. And when he dies, he wants to be able to go to Heaven and see the family members that have gone there before him. Trey McMahan may become a hall of fame lineman, he may not. And to tell you the truth, that isn’t really on his mind right now. The only things on his mind are being like Christ, leading on the field, obeying and loving his parents, and knocking the defensive player opposite of him on his back. And that’s one lineman stereotype that Trey is consistent with.

Bird! By Rev. Rusty Asble

Taking Faith To The Field

I

f you ever heard that word on an opening day of Dove Season, you know what I am talking about. The thrill and challenge of another year of hunting beginning right before you. The elusive gray feathered ghost as it darts and maneuvers ever so eloquently as a fighter pilot avoiding enemy territory. You hear shots ring out from across the field and watch this small speck work its way across to you… Every year, Opening Day of dove season, usually around the first of September, begins an incredible legacy and heritage for outdoorsmen across our great nation. The Mourning Dove is the most hunted and the most harvested migratory game bird in North America. There are approximately 450 million birds in the continental population. The overall harvest in the U.S. is 45 million birds. In Tennessee, some 100,000 dove hunters harvest and estimated 2 million or more doves annually. Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency offers many great public hunts throughout the State. Our region – Region Three offers 8 great public locations that include, for many, the entire season. This can be located at www.tn.gov/twra/dovemain.html . They have done a great job to bring this opportunity to many. Also, be sure to look for the youth hunts to be able to introduce the next generation to this shooting sport in a specialized situation. Two things to consider about finding a place to dove hunt. One, it is a federal migratory bird. It does not mater if you are on public or private land all regulations are the same. Be sure to check the extensive guidelines for safety and ethical hunting. Secondly, if hunting on public land steel shot is required. Do not take lead shotshells on federal/public land it is against the law. As for safety, a few key points to follow. Always keep your gun unloaded to and from the field. Always keep the barrel pointed in a safe location when loaded or unloaded. Do not shoot at and call out low birds. Be aware of other hunters locations and your surroundings. Be a sportsmen that has great ethics, accountability and responsibility. …as the bird nears our location we pull up and success. The tumbling feathery feast collapses to the ground for a soon to come tasty meal. It is the start to another great season. Enjoy and remember to always take Faith To The Field.

EFFICIENT couponing By Kasey Knight Trenum

W

e’ve all heard the stories and seen the pictures. You know, the ones of overflowing stockpile shelves. toilet paper stuffed under the bed, and a gazillion coupons. This is the result of hours and hours spent planning and organizing for one trip to the grocery store. It can be more than a little intimidating! In fact, after seeing such shenanigans people often tell me they think couponing is like a full to job. And while they’d love to learn how to save their family money, it just isn’t worth it if it takes tons of time. This could not be more true. But here’s the thing: Couponing does not have to become your life. You don’t have to spend days planning for a single trip to the store. My hope is that you learn to coupon effectively in a way that not only saves you money, but one you will be able to maintain. You might be surprised to hear that I DON’T LOVE COUPONS. It’s true! I don’t wake up every morning excited to cut up coupons or jump on every deal that I can find. Simply put, couponing brought hope to my family’s finances. I didn’t start couponing because I thought it would be fun. Instead, couponing happened to be the tool that God used to bring hope to my family’s finances during a very difficult financial season. Personally, I quit my job to stay at home when my second child was born almost seven years ago. To supplement our income, my husband and I started building spec homes on the side. The first house sold before we finished it, so we decided to build two the next time. Then, the housing market crashed and we were stuck with those two houses, plus the house we lived in for two years. During that time, my father was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer, and the day after his funeral my husband lost his day job in medical sales due to a company merger that eliminated his division. I tried many different ways to save money, but at the end of the month nothing was making a dent in our three mortgages. After much research and trial and error, I started couponing. Each week, I noticed that I began saving more and more money. Before I knew it I had made a considerable dent in our weekly grocery budget, therefore freeing up money to help pay our mortgages! As a result, we’ve saved thousands of dollars at the grocery store over the past couple of years. Most importantly, it has afforded us the incredible opportunity to give into the lives of others in ways we never imagined. Yes, during the most difficult financial season of our life, we were able to give more groceries away. So what is the bottom line? Couponing needs to fit into your life….not become your life. September The truth is that the most important roles in our lives

34 2013

lie far beyond the grocery cart. I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and most importantly a child of God. Like anything in life, it’s important to approach couponing with a balanced, realistic mindset. So where exactly is the balance? Simple. It is in you. It is in finding a system that works and one that allows you to achieve your savings goals without giving up time with those you love. With that in mind here are three quick balance tips to help you keep things in perspective:

1. Limit Your Stores It can often feel that if we want to make the most of our savings, then we are going to have to hit every store, every week. This is far more than any one person can sanely take on! So choose one or two stores with the best deals of the week and stick with them.

2. Find Your System There are tons of different couponing and organizational systems out there and they all have their strengths. It doesn’t so much matter which system you choose, only that you pick one that works for you and stick with it. This will save you time each week not only as you plan but also once you get to the store.

3. Enjoy Your Savings Too often I hear people getting caught up in how much other people were able to save. Honey, this is not a competition! It’s about making a difference in your family’s budget. So enjoy the savings you snag and don’t worry about what others are doing. Remember, don’t pressure yourself to invest hours and hours clipping coupons to save 90 percent off your grocery bill every time. If you save 40 percent or less, fabulous! You are still saving your family money. If couponing starts cutting into the time you could be spending with your family, working, doing something you love, or taking care of yourself, it’s too much. I’m not willing to accept being secluded in a room couponing for twelve hours just for a lower grocery bill. And I’m pretty sure you aren’t, either. You don’t have to be in love with coupons. You don’t have to compute math in your head. And you don’t have to set aside hours each week just to work on your coupons. I can’t stress enough—balance is the key to making couponing work for you. There’s no doubt that couponing effectively can change your life and finances for the better. And there’s no doubt that the savings are real, the opportunities to give are amazing, and it doesn’t have to take hours a week that you don’t have. It’s not just about getting a deal.........it’s about making a difference.

Benefits of Christian Counseling By Don Smith My wife and I are not seeing eye to eye; how do I get her to see things the way I do? Why won’t my children do as their directed to? Why do I have to become a monster for them to move? These and many more questions are not abnormal; as a matter of fact they are more the norm than you may think. But how do average people meet this challenge and come out better because of it? We are living in a broken society. Sin and selfishness are all around us. Seeing things from another’s perspective is not an easy task. It used to be I could talk with my Dad, or Mom; they’ve been married forever – they handled all 6 of us kids when I was growing up. But sadly Mom and Dad are not close by, or they may not be here at all. So what’s a person supposed to do? Do I talk to my coworkers? Do I talk to the neighbor? Do I stop the postman? Can I call an 800 number and get advice? Well those may not be the most reliable sources of help. And sometimes they most assuredly are not Godly sources of help. If I can’t talk with others, how can I get answers? At the risk of sounding trite; there is a Godly way to do this. The Scriptures tell us that Jesus is our Great Counselor; that Holy Spirit is our Comforter. So how do I get Jesus to counsel me, or Holy Spirit to comfort me? God gives talents and gifts to many people, varied gifts and talents. He has compassionate people who have exposed themselves to training, Biblical teaching and study, ready to help in the time of need. People who have tools to help cope, and lessons to learn when September it comes to dealing with people (and yes, your chil-

36 2013

dren are people). There are issues and a mindset that blocks people from getting this help. Why can’t I talk with a friend? I wish I could just ask… I don’t want my pastor to know we’re having trouble; I don’t have the money to see a “professional”. Why do I have to see a “professional” anyway? If I had real friends I wouldn’t have to pay for someone to listen to me. I don’t want to tell a stranger all my “stuff.” Sometimes we think that we must not be very spiritual if I have to call on a counselor. If I could only study more, blog, pray, or whatever else you could name. The fact remains we are a broken people, living in a broken world, and we want our brokenness to be “fixed.” To be frank the only and best way to do that is to open up and see someone who is trained, empathetic, and called and equipped to help. That someone is a Counselor. But what if my friends find out? What if my boss finds out? What if the nosey busy body down the street figures out I’m going to see a Counselor? What am I going to do then? One thing is for sure … the busy body will find something to gossip about, your friends will probably find you to be a better friend, and your boss will most likely see that you are a better employee. The bottom line is it’s your life, your emotions, and your peace that is paramount, not the musings of others who don’t live with you, or are not intimately in relationship with you. Just saying … what business is it of theirs? In the end, you’re going to make a decision to see a Counselor or not. You’re going to manage the pain of your life by yourself, or you are going to reach out and find Godly counsel. The Bible says for us [God and you] to come and reason together. Why not invite a Godly Counselor into the mix and help you find the answers, and peace we all seek.

Staying Connected

ecent surveys have shown that older adults (60+) have an optimistic view of their future. Contrary to what some may believe, this new found optimism has less to do with their financial future, but more to do with staying connected to friends and family. As life expectancy increases, older adults find themselves looking forward to watching their grandchildren grow up. The change in our economy has forced many young parents to find employment, thus creating a two-income family. Parents also find it necessary to allow their children to pursue such rigorous schedules, that more and more grandparents find themselves retiring and assisting with their grandchildren on a consistent basis. Just the other day, I was talking to a good friend while he was watching his twin grandsons because they were sick. I chuckled as he was trying to administer medications and juggle their antics while waiting to be relieved by their grandmother. In our own lives, we have found ourselves relying on grandparents to assist with our children’s after school sport calendar. In the past, the occasional grandparent visit was comSeptember mon; now as people 2013

age, finding joy in these types of relationships has changed the outlook of many growing seniors. Retirement living facilities, “granny pods”, and so many other alternative facilities seem to be growing popular as people age. In the past, increased care needs had been one of the major reasons people considered the senior living sector. Now, people choose these facilities to stay connected with their peers. The former term “activities” seems to be dying, and now senior living “gurus” create rigorous recreational calendars to entice and retain their clients. Whereas, some people still enjoy the occasional game of Bingo, most are looking for recreation that allows them to meet

new people, date socially, and create meaningful relationships. Most senior living facilities are forced to consider overnight trips, dating socials, college core classes, Skype and other options. And throughout communities, neighborhoods, church groups, social clubs, etc. older adults are finding a way to connect with others. It is therefore no surprise that the life expectancy of older adults will continue to rise. Meaningful relationships and connectedness have a great deal to do with why older adults will continue their optimistic outlook, and our society will be enriched as a result. So long “couch potato”, the new generation of baby booming seniors is already changing their future!

Stroller, Bike or Motorcycle By Pastor Larry Cockerham Living Word Church

There are lots of ways to get through life and lots of vehicles to carry you places, but the vehicle you choose makes a big difference in where you go and how fast you get there. I want to share with you about 3 vehicles that probably all of us have used -- the stroller, the bike and the motorcycle. (If you’ve never been on a motorcycle, I’m sorry. You missed out on something.) I am sharing about these three vehicles because they are related to your destination and velocity of getting there. (1) Stroller - All of us began our life being carried in an infant carrier or a stroller. At that stage, somebody else was totally responsible for your movement. Some of us still live that way. We go where we’re carried. Some days we’re up, because the people around us pick us up. Other days we’re down because, nobody picks us up. We can always blame it on somebody else. Somebody else is responsible for our happiness. You won’t go very far in life in a stroller, always depending on others to make you happy. As you grow up in God, you begin to realize that you are responsible for your own happiness.

(3) Motorcycle - Now a motorcycle is different because it has power. A motorcycle is a powerful vehicle that can take you places faster. With a motorcycle, you can control your direction and speed. It has power because it has an engine that converts power into motion. It won’t do you any good to have a powerful engine if you don’t keep it fueled, turn it on and release its power.

What is the power I’m talking about? Some might be surprised at my answer, but the Bible says “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” It’s the power and strength to keep your engine running. In fact you can’t run very long without it. Joy charges your battery and fuels your (2) Bicycle - Anybody remember engine. That’s what keeps your engine running. There are when you learned to ride a bicycle? things that fill up your joy tank, charge your joy battery When I got a bicycle and learned and there are things that drain you dry. to ride it, I was liberated. I could go all over the neighborhood. I could Today I want to ask you to check your “joy-ogo over to our little sandlot base- meter”. It’s a gauge that indicates the joy level in your life. ball field, or to my friend’s house, It can also tell you what we’ve been hooking up to. We all or to the store. I wasn’t dependent on someone else to have joy drainers in our lives, things that drain our batcarry me everywhere I went. I became responsible for teries and leave us feeling discouraged, weak and defeatmy own movement. It’s an important step ed. Some people are joy drainers. They see the dark cloud in growing up, but it’s nothing like riding a in every silver lining. They see the glass is always at least motorcycle. half empty. They are always expecting something bad to September 2013

happen, and it usually does. When someone starts a parade, they bring the rain. When someone gets a little fire going, they bring the wet blanket. When something good happens, they go around knocking on wood, expecting some disaster to fall on them right away. Many of them are religious. They act like they were baptized in pickle juice. In fact, they would rather suck on a dill pickle than to eat chocolate cake. It suits their personality better. If you’re not careful, they’ll turn off your “joy-o-meter” and turn on your “grouch-o-meter”. They’re joy drainers. Do you know anybody like that? To keep the joy of the Lord, we have to balance the amount of time we spend with joy drainers with time spent with joy builders. But you can’t avoid joy draining people altogether. After all, some of you live with one. Most of you work with one. And all of us encounter at least one joy drainer every day. The main thing is don’t BE a joy drainer. The great thing is that you can choose to recharge your joy battery every day, You can choose to rejoice in the Lord and live in the joy of the Lord no matter who you’re around and no matter what happens throughout the day. Some of you might say, “If you lived where I live, with the people I live with, you would be a sourpuss

too, and if you worked where I work, you wouldn’t have any joy either.” Let me tell you, you can believe that, but you’ll have to deny the Word of God that says, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.” After all, it’s not your joy. It’s the JOY OF THE LORD that is your strength. You can choose to rejoice every day, no matter what happens.

It’s time for us to get out of the stroller, leave behind our little bicycle and get on the motorcycle of the joy of the Lord. The joy of the Lord is your strength.

Pick up only.

Seven critical mistakes a buyer makes when purchasing a home! By Markietta Munck Be aware and protect yourself from these costly mistakes!

Mistake 1: Choosing a real estate agent who is not committed to forming a strong business relationship with you and working with or around your schedule. As a real estate agent we need to be ready to show a property at 8am or 8pm, whichever time meets the clients’ needs. So be sure up front that the agent you choose is willing to make that a priority.

Mistake 2: Making an offer on a home before you have been preapproved. First, because you want to be able to present a strong offer to the seller when making an offer on their home. Having your preapproval letter with your offer will help you achieve that.

Mistake 3: Not knowing the total cost involved. Down payment, closing cost, and monthly payments are important to consider. There are several loan options available. Some loans offer zero money down. A popular loan available is the FHA loan and requires 3.5% of the purchase price down. There are many avenues that you can take so call your lender for preapproval!

Mistake 4: Limiting you search to the internet and open houses only. Both ways are okay but the information on the internet may not be the most accurate. Your best route for getting the most up to date information is to call a Real estate agent. We have so many additional resourced that will ensure you have the latest and most accurate information available when searching for your dream home.

Mistake 5: Thinking you’ll never find the perfect home for you. We have a large inventory available and new homes hit the market daily. So working with an agent and staying on top of the current inventory there is no reason you can’t find that perfect home!

Mistake 6: Not having a home inspection. Home inspectors inspect the home to make you aware of any structural issues as well as any handyman repairs that might be needed.

44

September 2013

Mistake 7: Not going to God! Last but certainly not least, you need to have the blessing from GOD. I always pray and ask God to close the doors that he doesn’t want me to go through. So if you have GOD’S blessing and feel it is the perfect house you will know that it’s the one You will have peace in knowing that it isn’t just a house… it’s a home!
